Steve Covino
Now, let's get this party started.
Dallas Goddard
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Steve Covino
Yeah, shout outs to our dude Colin, who it was fun to hang him. Hang with him in New Orleans at his volume party.
Rich Davis
Great to see him. Actually, I posted a picture from that event in our IG story at Covino and Rich. If you want to play along at home.
Steve Covino
You mean the one that John Middlekop took with the worst lighting ever?
Dallas Goddard
You guys look so good in that pic.
Rich Davis
Middle Cough is a great dude. It was great talking to him. He's a great host, but he's a terrible photographer.
Steve Covino
True.
Rich Davis
Then again, we were boozing and schmoozing at the Super Bowl. But again, everything at Covino and Rich on social media, CNR on FSR. And for Colin on the herd, the number 8, 7, 7 for the herd. We're live from Jersey. And again, shout out to Everybody on the iHeartRadio app. Checking out our podcast search Covino and Rich, wherever you stream your podcast. We're on 5 to 7 on the east normally, but always a pleasure to be here. Also, shout out to Ross who drove us home from our Philly event with Dallas Goddard yesterday. Yeah, from iheart. Ross drove us from Philly all the way to Jersey, which is great. So shout out to him. He's listening. And everybody hanging out with us today, we appreciate you.
Steve Covino
This guy Ross was the nicest guy. Danny G. We got to tell you the story, Danny, because we hang with you every day. We're doing the event with Dallas Goddard all day. A lot of fun.
Dallas Goddard
Yeah, nice outfit you had on in your Instagram story yesterday.
Steve Covino
We had to wear the most ridiculous tracksuits. It was a sales event with Dallas and Ross, who works for Iheart, is like, yeah, where you guys headed? We were going to take an Amtrak or an Uber or something from Philly back to Jersey and he said, well, I'm headed in that direction. And we took him up on it.
Rich Davis
Well, God bless him too, because he had to listen to Rich for three hours on the way home.
Steve Covino
So we got stuck behind an Accident. This poor dude signed up for driving Covino and Rich back to New Jersey.
Rich Davis
Got Rich his whole life story. So he deserves a shout out.
Steve Covino
Shout out to Ross who works on the marketing team at iHeart in New York. He's a good dude.
Rich Davis
Again, I'm Steve Covino. That is Rich Davis. Danny G is back at the LA Studios at 8774-The Hertz Super Produce and getting ready for quote me our new game giving away prizes. So stick around for that. And of course, big sexy Ryan on the ones and twos. But I want to continue talking about what made the four nations tournament so great, so intriguing. Pulled us all in yesterday. We have to make it very clear that we rarely watch hockey. And man, we were tuned in. We felt the excitement. We realized it felt big. We realized that pride was on the line and we saw some really great sportsmanship, some really great gameplay. And I don't think anyone said it better than PK Sub on last night. Rich.
Steve Covino
Yeah, take a listen to this guy giving it to Stephen A. I'm sick and tired of making athletes greats, all time greats that aren't the best examples. Stephen A. You want athletes to be educated on this and understand this. They gotta understand the importance of showing up to the all Star game and being on the court. Because you're making 100, 200, 300 million, you should be out there banged up. You should be. That's why we pay you, is to max out. I don't care if you play 50 years, I want your best 10. I want you on the court dominating. I want you to go all out. I want Michael Jordan, I want Kobe. That's what I want in every sport. That's the guy that I follow. You're a different version than that. You don't get my respect.
Rich Davis
I think that's why it resonated so hard last night though, Rich. Because it's the casual fans, right? The casual fans are easily turned off by that type of attitude, whether it's warranted or not. That's the vibe we get from a lot of pampered athletes. You didn't get that vibe last night from these hockey players. They were putting it all out there for the fans, for their teammates, for their country, for the pride. And that hit us. And we're watching. You could see we have eyes like, yo, man, this is cool to watch.
Steve Covino
Yeah. Even Stephen A. Was like, I can't argue that.
Rich Davis
I can't debate that.
Steve Covino
I wrote down three reasons why I think last night resonated. And you just touched on one of them, anytime you involve country pride, that's what the Olympics are based on. Right. So you talk about country pride. You see it in the world baseball class.
Rich Davis
It's almost an unfair comparison to compare that to the NBA All Star Game then. But you got to give hockey credit for saying, well, this is what we're going to do. Right. That it was a great move.
Steve Covino
Well, the NBA has toyed with, like I said, the one on $1 million tournament. They have also toyed with, like the US superstars versus the international superstars. Maybe there's something there. So country pride always is going to bring out another layer.
Rich Davis
Right.
Steve Covino
I'll be honest. Polarizing or not, the fact that Donald Trump was involved in. I'm going to motivate Team usa.
Rich Davis
It created a buzz for sure. It just brought more attention to what was going on because that became a story in itself.
Steve Covino
And you can't say that the fighting layer doesn't appeal to us, that we knew that the previous matchup a week ago, there were three fights in the first, like nine seconds. So when you know that, ooh, this bad blood.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Steve Covino
And which is. Yeah, which is that you know what it is? It's a fighter's responsibility. If you watch UFC or boxing, it's a fighter and a promoter's responsibility to get you hyped up about the fight. And the easiest way to do that is to create animosity and bad blood.
Rich Davis
So hold up.
Steve Covino
Hey.
Rich Davis
But again, what we criticize sometimes the NBA for is rivalry. It's rivalry. What you're really getting at the heart of it here is rivalry. Right. We, we really bought into the rivalry here. Like, ooh, they don't like each other. That gets you tuned in. Would you rather watch a boxing match of, of two people that respected each other and liked each other or people that hated each other or, you know, it could, it could get nasty. That, that builds intrigue. And when we see what, what happens.
Steve Covino
In the NBA, you can see that's.
Rich Davis
Great sportsmanship or whatever. And not just the NBA. There's. I'm not, I don't want to be like, I'm hating on the NBA. But a lot of sports today is when players are too buddy. Chummy with the opposing team. It takes away that rivalry that we as fans want to see sometimes.
Steve Covino
Yeah. So if you add all those things up, country pride fighting and President Trump and they were boos and cheers and jeers for the, the US Anthem. Oh, Canada. So there was a lot of layers and I think a big night for Hockey. So you got to give credit where credit's due. I'm not saying I'm going to start watching a random Avalanche game on a Tuesday, you know, or like, it's not like I'm getting the NHL package when I get home, but still.
Rich Davis
Also, though, on a big stage, when the stars step up, you know, and you see Connor McDavid come through, like, they're like, oh, that's why he's a big name. That's cool to see, right? Like, you want to see those stars deliver when you tune in again, we rarely watch hockey, but I think they won me over last night. I think, you know, they won a lot of people over. That's the sentiment here.
Steve Covino
And you know what it you could tie it into. Like I said before, what gave the WNBA buzz in the last year and a half?
Rich Davis
Rivalry.
Steve Covino
A great young star and rivalry.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Steve Covino
And maybe that rivalry, like, you know, what made the NBA take off to new Heights in the 80s? Magic vs. Birds. Celtics, Lakers, the owners, the organization, the stars.
Rich Davis
So the stars playing with fire.
Steve Covino
You know, I mean, think about baseball in the 90s. Yankees, Red Sox. There's a reason why sports have their peaks and valleys. Peyton Manning versus Tom Brady. That battle in the AFC for a good decade, you need competition, you need rivalries, you need this stuff. And I think right now the NBA has some great aging superstars. Steph, LeBron, Kyrie, Draymond. These are. These are all guys that. They're sort of all pals. They played with you, with each other.
Rich Davis
They haven't.
Steve Covino
Can you tell me one rivalry? Danny, you watch the NBA more than all of us. Can you tell me right now, one heated rivalry in the NBA where it's like, ooh, they're playing the Tuesday night on tnt. I got to watch.
Dallas Goddard
Yeah, I wouldn't say heated comes to mind for any of the rivalries right now in the NBA. But what I'll say about all the criticism for their all star weekend, there was defense played finally. That's been the rub for a long time. Now, those high scores, what were the final scores? Like 210 to. To 2. Yeah. To 202.
Steve Covino
The over under on those games were like 450.
Dallas Goddard
Yeah, exactly. And now this format was more competitive. The big complaint and from a lot of the players, including Trey Young, if you remember, was that those 20 minute breaks were what kind of threw this out of sync. So I think they're on the right track in the NBA, but there's still some tweaking that needs to be done.
Rich Davis
Okay, so Again, the question that we posed to everybody, hanging out and just chilling 8, 7, 7, 4, the herd is, did hockey win last night? Did it win you over? And if you're already a fan, what was it that made it feel so big to you? And how did you feel about everything you saw last night? And congrats again to Canada, man, that was awesome.
Steve Covino
Not to hammer home the same point because we'll move on, but the competition, the competitive, you know, countries, rivalries. What was the first thing everyone was saying when the Luca Anthony Davis trade went down? Oh, you know, it would be awesome in the playoffs if Dallas and the Lakers got matched up. Because that's our initial instinct, is we want to see the drama, the rivalries, the.
Rich Davis
Yeah, but as PK Subhan said, yeah, we want to see that, but it's also on there and to deliver. Yeah, that sort of competitiveness, it's. It's on them to say, I'm playing hurt. No doubt, giving you my 100%. That's why they're getting paid that much money.
Steve Covino
But no doubt if the Lakers and Mavericks somehow lined up to play the Western Conference semis or even the finals, you know, depending on how the bracket works out, that would by far, mark my words, it would be by far the biggest ratings. If AD Is healthy, Luke is healthy.
Rich Davis
I'm going to Mark Messi. I hear words now.
Steve Covino
You're a hockey guy. I'm a hockey guy.
Dallas Goddard
Rich, also with that line of thinking we're paying attention to whenever Jimmy Butler and the warriors play against his former Heat teammates.
Steve Covino
It's. It's why every time a guy goes back to a team that did him dirty or traded him or he left, what do they do? It's always a homecoming of fans want to watch because it's a nice thing or like, oh, that a hole's back.
Rich Davis
Boo.
Steve Covino
Like, why we. We can't forget why we love these things. Right?
Rich Davis
Your thoughts, Fox Sports Radio Nation. Do we all agree on this? Have to 8, 7, 7 for the herd. I thought, you know, for a random Thursday night, I'm like, what am I watching? This feels like two worlds collide, rival nations. It felt like an Olympic type of atmosphere last night. And that's sort of what we got on a random Thursday. Props again to hockey. They did it right. They innovated, it worked out. Props again to the Four nations tournament. And the Four nations title in overtime goes to Canada.
Steve Covino
By the way, oddly enough, until last night, Cavino's favorite hockey player, Happy Gilmore.
Dallas Goddard
Yeah, Cavino and Rich are Canadians Now, I was watching NBA last night.
Rich Davis
Seriously, Danny, did you not tune in?
Dallas Goddard
No, I saw highlights, but I was watching NBA last night.
Rich Davis
It felt like a big, big deal.
Dallas Goddard
You know, you guys are prisoners of the moment right now with hockey.
Steve Covino
I mean, it's possible. That's why. That's why I like to hear everyone's opinion, because I. I totally felt sucked in, where I'm like, oh, my God, do I like hockey? No, impossible. This just feels big.
Rich Davis
Dude, we were in Jersey, right? Eating pizza, watching hockey. Like, oh, man. Enjoying every second of it.
Dallas Goddard
Yeah, the same guys who. Last week on the Dan Patrick show, when we were filling in, you guys put competitive eating over hockey as a major sport.
Rich Davis
That's right. That's right.
Steve Covino
But it all changed that. Hold on, hold on now. We did have Joey Chestnut on the show. Do I take back what I said? I still think hot dog eating is above hockey, but that could change.
Rich Davis
Danny G. Really hit the nail on that, because the question really is, are we all not just Kavino and Rich? Are we all just prisoners of the moment because we saw something really great last night? Are we prisoners of the moment? Or did it really deliver to the point where, hey, I think I'm a fan there.
Steve Covino
What I don't want to do.
Rich Davis
I'll tune in a little more now.
Steve Covino
You know what I don't want to do, though, Kov? I don't want to be the guy I hate. And you know who that guy is? It's the guy that every four years, breaks out his vuvuzela, and he's like, yeah, soccer. And you're like, shut up. Shut up. World cup guy. Put away your horn. And I get it. You like hockey. I mean, I'm sorry. You like soccer. I don't want to be that guy.
Rich Davis
With hockey, we're not that. That guy's usually the same guy that likes the Olympics and the Olympics only, right?
Steve Covino
But I will say a great night. The mother effing end.
Rich Davis
Here we go. Win for Canada. Win for hockey.
Steve Covino
All right, now, I have an interesting question to pose based on something I read this morning. Now, I'm not saying this is likely, but there are articles on legitimate nude sources.
Rich Davis
Did you say nude sources? Because that's probably more accurate. If Rich was reading something, it's probably from a nude source.
Steve Covino
I'm sorry. Not sure what happened there. News source. I should get rid of my nude sources. I'm sorry. There are news sources saying that likely won't happen, but there are. Even ESPN is one of these places that are suggesting that the Chiefs can make a very unpopular move. But when it comes to money on the books, dead cap, space, everything, it makes a hell of a lot of sense for the Chiefs to think about moving on from Travis Kelsey after what he has done for that team. His girlfriend's the most famous person on planet Earth. What do they talk about? The hundreds of millions of dollars she's brought in revenue. The owner of the chief's daughter thanked.
Rich Davis
Her for the way. There's, like, weird value in that because any team that would want to pick him up also gets that fan base. Remember, the stats, like Chiefs fandom went up like 40%, dude, as a result of the Swifties.
Steve Covino
As Travis Kelsey said on the New Heights podcast, I'm going to take some time to figure it out. I think I owe to my teammates that if I do come back, it's going to be a wholehearted decision. And I'm not half assing it. I'm fully in it there for them now. There's no doubt.
Rich Davis
I think if you're wondering if your whole heart's in it, it is.
Steve Covino
I said that last week.
Rich Davis
I said, but there's truth to that.
Steve Covino
I said, if you have to think about whether or not you. I'm not Travis Kelce, so I'm not putting words in another grown man's mouth. But if. If you. If I said Camino, let me think about if I'm in it for the Covino and Rich show, then you should think like, yo, he's not in it.
Rich Davis
Yeah, not in it.
Steve Covino
If I asked Kavino, if you think.
Rich Davis
About it, then you and I are not on the same page.
Steve Covino
If I said, hey, Kavino, our contract's coming up soon. How do you feel about our show? And you're like, you know, let me think about if I'm in it. If you have to think about whether you're in it, it's.
Rich Davis
Yeah. How would you like it if your wife said that to you?
Steve Covino
Honey, our anniversary is coming up. Let me think about if I still am in it.
Rich Davis
I was thinking about renewing our vows. Let me think about whether or not I'm in it or not. Because if I'm not fully in it, then I don't think it would be fair to you. You would be like, well, clearly she's not that in it.
Steve Covino
In any other scenario, you would be like, beat it. Well, it might be an unpopular move, but the way Kelsey's contract is set up, what an easy way for the Chiefs to sort of Reba revamp a little bit in 20, 25. It would cost the Chiefs only $2.5 million to cut Travis Kelsey. However, it would save them $17 million in salary.
Rich Davis
Yeah, but again, there's an unwritten how much revenue they get from the Swifty fan base as a result. Those are amazing stats. Read that again. It would cost him 2.5 million to get rid of dead money in dead.
Steve Covino
Money while they would save save 17 in salary cap.
Rich Davis
But how much are they really losing to with that fan base?
Steve Covino
And then you got to say, well, what are they more interested in their cap space and winning or keeping hundreds of millions of dollars of Swifty revenue as part of their team.
Rich Davis
And by the way, if he retires a chief. Right. You got to factor in that every young girl and this sounds silly guys, but this is the truth. Every young girl who was impacted by them dating that are now considered Chiefs.
Steve Covino
Yeah, I guess I'm a Chiefs fan.
Rich Davis
For the rest of their life. If he retires a chief, if they're buying a jersey or going to a game or showing interest in any team, it's going to be the Chiefs.
Steve Covino
Do you know how much Chicago Bulls benefited?
Rich Davis
Yeah, but there's value in that. And it can't be. It sounds absurd and silly, but it can't be downplayed.
Steve Covino
Do you know how much the Chicago Bulls benefited in the 90s until this day, based on kids, little boys, little girls, everyone. That's like I like Michael Jordan.
Rich Davis
You're creating generations of fans.
Steve Covino
You, you created.
Rich Davis
And, and it was the chief's owner's daughter that. That's that right.
Steve Covino
The Hunt story.
Rich Davis
Their fandom went up 43% as a result.
Steve Covino
You'd be lying if you didn't tell. If you're roughly 40ish like we are Danny G, Big Ryan, you tell me you don't have at least a couple friends. Like I'm a Bulls fan and they were a Bulls fan because when they're a little boy, they love Michael Jordan. And they stuck with the Bulls till this day. Through Derrick Rose, through nobody's. Till now. They are a Bulls fan. And Travis Kelsey by dating Taylor Swift have created generational fans. So we ask you. It's a two layer question.
Rich Davis
It would be.
Steve Covino
Would it be a fool's move to trade? Sorry. Or cut? Release Travis Kelsey and think about your own team. What's the trade or cut that hurt your heart as a fan, think of the teams you root for from the time you're a little boy or girl till now. What was the team cut or trade that hurt your feelings the most because there's one that's happening right now that's in the same vein as Travis Kelce. I think it has maybe 1/10 of the impact, but there is. There's a guy that does not have a home right now and I think it's BS And I'll tell you what it is. Next, Kavino and Rich in for our buddy Colin on the herd. Let's go.
Dallas Goddard
One more herd. The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the iHeartRadio app search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.

We talk sports, but we talk pop culture and music and a little bit of everything because we got lots to say. I texted you and you texted me back. Now, I don't know if you have the update, but like all the little thumbs up and heart and stuff, like it's all colored. They changed it and the heart's a little pink. It felt like I told you I loved you. I'm gonna be honest, it was a little pink.
Steve Covino
There was something sentimental when you, when you send it, you're just like, do I send the heart now?
Bobby Bones
I don't like the color edition.

It's extremely pink.

This is Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli.
Steve Covino
The five families did not shoot that picture.
Mark Seal
Leave the Gun Take the Cannoli is based on my co host Mark's best selling book of the same title. And on this show we call upon his years of research to help unpack the story behind the Godfather's birth. From start to finish.
Dallas Goddard
This is really the first interview I've done in bed.
Mark Seal
We sift through innumerable accounts.
Steve Covino
35 pages isn't very much.
Mark Seal
Many of them conflicting.
Steve Covino
That's nonsense.
Mark Seal
There were 60 pages and try to get to the truth of of what really happened.
Steve Covino
And they said we're finished. This is over. It only is not going to work. You gotta get rid of those guys. It's a disaster.
Mark Seal
Leave the Gun Take the Cannoli features new and archival interviews with Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Evans, James Caan, Talia Shire and many others.
Steve Covino
Yes, that was a real horse's head.
Mark Seal
Listen and subscribe to Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Rich Davis
All right, Kavino and Rich in for Colin on the herd. 8774 the herd at Covino and Rich. If you want to play along at home, cov I n o enrich and definitely check our podcast search Covino and Rich wherever you stream. We're live in Vegas. Danny G's on the phones back in LA with Big Sexy Ryan.
Steve Covino
And do you think he likes that nickname? We make a dad. Ryan's got to go home and be like, honey, they call me Big Sexy.
Rich Davis
How do you not like it? Right? And we're talking about, well, as Dan Beyer once put it on our show, cutting the head of the snake. Sometimes you got to cut the head of the snake. Culture of the team.
Steve Covino
They did it with Noma in Boston and then ended up winning two World Series.
Rich Davis
Dude, that is an example four year period because Theo Epstein was the young GM at the time. And people like, what are you doing? He's the only guy we love here on the Red Sox. He's the guy. He's the face of the franchise. You're gonna get rid of Noma. And that's the story. And if you really want to change the culture sometimes and you really want to move forward, those are the moves, the unpopular moves at the time that you got to make. And I believe Dan Buyer put it in that, in that perspective when we were talking about Aaron Rodgers leaving the Jets. Like, hey, are the jets going to keep Aaron Rodgers, you think? No, because if you really want to change the culture, sometimes you got to get rid of that. You got to get rid of that guy.
Steve Covino
Shout out to our buddy D.B. kavino and Rich in for the Herd. And this comes up because there's a, there's a sentiment out there that the Chiefs cutting Travis Kelsey sort of makes sense.
Rich Davis
You're not getting rid of Patrick Mahomes. That's not happening.
Steve Covino
I mean, he's your guy forever. But you know, an aging, looking, sluggish in the Super Bowl, Travis kelsey, who has $100 million podcast Life is good for him.
Rich Davis
Patrick Mahomes here, I'm here.
Steve Covino
Hey, what's up? Kavino and Rich doing a great job.
Rich Davis
And for calling on the Herd. And I just want to know, like, will I have any say in this at all? Because if it's up to me, he's my guy. He stays on the team. We've won with him before and I know we got to look forward to the future, but he's the guy.
Steve Covino
He's part of the fabric of what we do.
Rich Davis
Just saying. And I just want to say great job again, especially that Covino guy. He's my guy. Cavino, way to go. Nope, I'm out. All right, later guys.
Steve Covino
You know, things to do. There's other, there's other tight ends. You know our dude, Dallas Goddard, who we were hanging with yesterday, he's a free agent next year.
Rich Davis
Say I looked him up. He signed like a 50 something million dollar deal. Silver goes until next year. And if I was. Hey, Mahomes, you're going to tell me you wouldn't want a solid young stud like Dallas Goddard, a sure handed guy like that in a year? Better believe it. Absolutely he would.
Steve Covino
And Danny, when. When Brock Bowers tires of being a Raider in a couple years. I'm kidding. Watch your mouth. Oh, that's right. I'm sorry. I'm dealing with two Raiders fans. I'm sorry, Ryan, but yeah, the. They're saying the sentiment is if they cut Kelsey, they lose like 2 mil. If. I'm sorry, no, if they. Yeah, if they cut him. But they also get $17 million in cap space back. And if he's at the end, it might make football sense, but doesn't make sense to the fans, to all the Swifties. And you might say that's ridiculous, but as the owner's daughter said, hundreds of millions of dollars you could tie back to the Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, Chief Kingdom Yeah.
Rich Davis
Whether you want to believe that or not.
Steve Covino
Now I said, I have an example that is maybe one tenth of this, but it really is like, I think a fail of all fails. And I get it. You want to. You want to feel the best team in any sport. You could say, look at the Lakers did for Bronnie. It was, you know, it's more of a show than legitimate. He's a good young player, but he should not be NBA ready yet.
Dallas Goddard
You know what?
Steve Covino
Sold tickets, got headlines. But my example is not Bronny. It's not Kelsey and Swift. I'm a New York Mets fan. Last year, you can't go through three seconds without seeing a fan holding up an OMG sign.
Rich Davis
Hello, it's Juan Soto. I want to say I like Betty. Betty much. If Iglesias stay on the team, I feel like I like him very, very much. And it mean a lot to me. Juan Soto, if he stay on the team.
Steve Covino
Omg.
Rich Davis
Omg. Juan Soto. And great job Cobino. I love that guy and I like him very, very much.
Steve Covino
So Jose Iglesias.
Rich Davis
No. But you don't think he adds to that Latin flavor that. Honestly, between you and me, bro, and the millions that are listening right now, I think part of that is what pulled Soto to your Mets. They had that Latino flair. They had a fun vibe. They had Francisco Lindor. They had a bunch of young Latin players that had a lot of fun. They were able to grow facial hair.
Steve Covino
So this. This omg Mets rally cry has not been signed. They. And I'm not saying. I'm not comparing Jose Glacis to Juan Soto.
Rich Davis
Soto was a big Candelita fan, bro.
Steve Covino
Pete Alonzo mania. I'm not comparing him to any of the Mets offseason signings, but when you are going to spend $765 million on Juan Soto and a guy like Jose Iglesias probably is like a $5 million utility guy. I'm not saying throw away 5 mil, but please re.
Rich Davis
Emphasize, though, you're not comparing him to Travis Kelsey.
Steve Covino
No, I'm not. I'm just.
Rich Davis
I'm talking about far as, like, he's the part of the fabric of the team, you want to keep him around. That's what you're getting. Yeah. When.
Steve Covino
When. When there's a. When there's a guy, a fan favorite, a rally cry, someone that means something to the team. And especially when it's not. When it's not big spending like Jose Iglesias isn't saying I want double digits a year. I bet you Jose Iglesias would take a one year small deal.
Rich Davis
Well, don't you think Kelsey honestly should be willing to take a pay cut for, you know, one more goodbye year and, and one more year of putting it out there and see if they, they could run it back and make some moves just to get back on track again.
Steve Covino
You're telling a grown man to take a pay cut. It sounds easier when you say it. Like, the reality is like, why should I take a pay cut? I'm a feature hall of Famer, retire as a chief. I'm just saying I think there's some.
Rich Davis
Some pride in that.
Steve Covino
Your thoughts at 877 for the herd. I want to hear the player that upset you the most when your team cut ties, whether they released them, cut them, traded him. The one that hurt the fan base where it's like, yo, for real, you got rid of Blank. When I was a kid, as a Mets fan, I'll give you one more match because it's what I could speak of, because that's my fandom. Two of them. I mentioned it before. When Montana left the Niners, I was like, really? I like Steve Young, but. Oh, really? Oh, and when the Mets said, yeah, you know what? We're going to let Gary Carter move on. The late, great Gary Carter, I know he was past his prime, but, God, it's Gary Carter like, he was the face.
Rich Davis
He won with you guys.
Steve Covino
Just, you know. Yeah, just the smiley catcher.
Rich Davis
So that as he's a leader of the team.
Steve Covino
Yeah. There was something about Gary Carter's departure when he went out west. It was like everybody loved that guy said, yeah, the soap commercials.
Rich Davis
Yeah. One of the most likable players in sports and especially in New York at the time because he won with the Mets.
Steve Covino
Now, Danny, let me ask you, being an LA guy, when Piazza came to us, I know he was in the. At the Marlins for like a cup of coffee in between, but did Piazza leaving hurt you guys or you not care?
Dallas Goddard
No, it did.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Dallas Goddard
I remember the girl I was dating at the time had like, tears welling up in her eyes.
Steve Covino
Damn.
Dallas Goddard
When she found out. You got to remember there was a mural of him on the outside of Dodger Stadium.
Rich Davis
Now, the truth is, Dan ripped. Danny ripped one. He was. He had a mean burrito that night.
Steve Covino
And she was tearing up.
Rich Davis
Yeah. It had nothing to do with Piazza.
Steve Covino
Danny, is there a Laker do not.
Dallas Goddard
Let gas in front of girlfriends?
Steve Covino
No. Danny, I remember you telling me once when Marcus Allen moved on to the, the Chiefs, you were very upset, man.
Rich Davis
I cried I was like, boo.
Dallas Goddard
I was very upset because you don't want, first of all, you don't want to see your childhood hero like Marcus Allen move to a different team, but then let alone it being the Chiefs, right? Go anywhere but Kansas City, please, if you are a Raider. And then more recently, when Jon Gruden returned to Oakland and Mark Davis got his dream to get his coach back, what's the first big move? He traded Khalil Mack. And there were Oakland Raider fans at the time who quit. They wrote memos about how their fandom was done. They. They can't believe this. Khalil Mack was the guy we all were rocking his jersey there at the Coliseum. And that, that was a big one. There's still Raider fans who have not gotten over that.
Rich Davis
What hurts the most? It usually hurts the most when you're a little kid because that's your first realization of, like, what, wow, my favorite guy is gone. How do they do, like, as a kid? It's like baffling. Like, you, you're almost. Your heart is hurting.
Steve Covino
Why, why would they do, you know, for my brother, My favorite player for my brother. That was Mookie Wilson when he got traded to the Blue Jays. Everyone has their example. Our buddy Bo back at Fox.
Rich Davis
Life lesson.
Steve Covino
Yeah, Bo said he was in fifth grade when that Piazza trade happened and he remembers crying on the way to school.
Rich Davis
Exactly what I was getting at. Thank you, Bo. Bo chiming in. That's a great example. Because as a kid you're like, wait, they could do that?
Steve Covino
Well, you know what? We're going to take all your feedback, but let's hit the Hard Line news with Danny G. Let's go.
Rich Davis
No, no, no. Turn on the news.
Dallas Goddard
This is the Herd line news. All right, you guys are honorary Canadians now, so we're going to start with Nathan McKinnon, who was named MVP last night in the nation's face off. McKinnon scored three goals in the three game round robin, starting with Canada's 43 win over Sweden.
Steve Covino
Pretty good game, eh?
Dallas Goddard
Opening game. He then added two goals in that 53 victory over Finland. And of course, that propelled his team into the final versus our U.S. team. It was a well deserved honor for McKinnon, who got Canada off to great early starts.
Rich Davis
Hey, Danny G. Do you think Canadians call Mark Messier? Mark Messiera.
Steve Covino
Oh, stop.
Rich Davis
He was.
Steve Covino
I saw him see Mark Messi.
Rich Davis
No, you know what? It's going to be a cool moment when people ask me in the future, hey, dude, are you a hockey fan? I Could always say for one day.
Steve Covino
I was for one day.
Rich Davis
Yeah, I was for one day. Because that was an amazing game, an amazing moment. We'll see how it, you know, carries on, but they had a great night.
Dallas Goddard
All right. To a league we can all agree on. The NFL. Aaron Rodgers, your boy, he's likely to play a wild card role in the NFL carousel. If the former four time NFL MVP wishes to continue his career, he's going to have to go elsewhere because the jets are going to release him. He's going to need to find a team willing to give him a shot. But what is Rogers looking for exactly? TMZ tracked them down. He was in a good mood. After workout, Rodgers talked about the factors he's taken into consideration. If they want you, he responded when asked that question. He also said he's considering the potential squad put around him and he wouldn't mind warm weather.
Steve Covino
I listen, it makes all sense for a veteran. Hey, I play in a nice place, you know, I want to play for someone that could potentially win and oh yeah, who doesn't want to be wanted? Danny, whether it's a relationship or a job, the sense of oh wow, you actually want me.
Rich Davis
Is every guy, new ladies listening? Every guy wants to feel desired.
Steve Covino
In fact, I think a lot of times when relationships fail is when the wife or husband or girlfriend or boyfriend doesn't make the other person feel desired at all.
Rich Davis
Yeah, for sure.
Steve Covino
So make Aaron Rodgers feel desired.
Rich Davis
Somebody makes it desired. Tickle his tootsies a little bit.
Dallas Goddard
All right. And we will wrap with the NBA. Sports media was really critical of LeBron just a couple days ago after he missed two threes.
Steve Covino
Cavino. Cavino, specifically Covino, always hard on LeBron.
Dallas Goddard
End of that Hornets game, try to.
Steve Covino
Get him to yell at Doug Gottlieb and you.
Rich Davis
No, no. Truthfully, I, I love LeBron. I would love to see him win one this year. I criticized him not changing for that all star team photo. I thought that was a weak moment. But he's had many, many great moments. I just thought that was one, one.
Dallas Goddard
Little step and a lot of ups and downs just this season because one game later Lakers head coach JJ Redick had something to say about 40 year old LeBron dropping to lead the Lakers to a 110, 102 win over the Blazers last night. He really justifies anything that's normal, Redick said. And not just the physical feats in the plays, it's the mentality. He's a billionaire, yet he's playing on the second night of a back to back at 40 after 22 years with every freaking record and every accolade. It's like he's just amazing to coach. He sets the standard for how you're supposed to approach this craft.
Rich Davis
He was blazing him as he said.
Steve Covino
I mean, the reality is we love to glamorize all the other people. Oh, you know, he's no MJ or no Kobe or no this guy. That LeBron is doing at his age what no one has ever done before. So it's very hard for the haters to even weigh in on this because what are you going to say? Well, yeah, he's, he's 40, doing what a 24 year old does. Come on, the guy's insane. You got to give LeBron props when he deserves it.
Dallas Goddard
By the way, he said the secret because he said this for a while is sleep when he has a good game. That was hard because the Lakers, they did. Their plane didn't land until 3 in the morning, so. So after the game, the Lakers sideline reporter was like, well, you can't stay sleep this time. And LeBron, LeBron said, yeah, I can because I slept in until 11:30.
Steve Covino
Telling you we're gonna have a killer show on Monday. I'm gonna sleep all weekend. I. I am so unrested out here.
Rich Davis
It'll take an edible until your son is bouncing on your head when you get home.
Steve Covino
Yeah. All right. Thank you. Danny G with the Herd Line news.
Dallas Goddard
Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by the Herd lie news.
Steve Covino
Yo, I got one dumb question to go along with all our feedback because I want, I want to get to your phone calls. The player that left your team, that hurt you as a kid, were you like, maybe you cried on the way to school? I like that one.
Rich Davis
Because again, there's, there's rumor and speculation that the Chiefs could save a lot of money by getting rid of Travis Kelce.
Steve Covino
But I have one other dumb question for you guys. My wife and I have a relatively new car. And because I'm coaching multiple kids sports now, that new car smell.
Rich Davis
Oh, yeah.
Steve Covino
Now smells like muskie. Catcher's equipment.
Rich Davis
Muskie or musty?
Steve Covino
Both. Do you as a parent that coaches? Because I guarantee we're talking to a lot of dads and moms that coach. Do you keep the equipment in the SUV or do you load it and unload it every time? Because I don't feel like taking that crap in and out every time. But does that mean my brand new car now smells like crappy equipment? Is that the dad life.
Rich Davis
I think this is part of the dad life. I think this is, you know, great problems to have. I think it just goes to territory of being a coach in little league or softball or whatever it is you're doing. Yeah. Who wants to deal with that hassle?
Steve Covino
I know.
Rich Davis
Or you could just buy like a little tree air freshener, call it a day.
Steve Covino
Thanks for solving my problem in 30 seconds. Yeah. Your feedback, the player that hurt your feelings the most. We'll get to that next. In for the Herd, in for Colin, your buds Kavino and Rich right here on Fox Sports Radio.

Steve Covino
To shoot that picture.
Mark Seal
Leave the Gun Take the Cannoli is based on my co host Mark's best selling book of the same title. And on this show we call upon his years of research to help unpack the story behind the Godfather's birth. From start to finish, this is really.
Rich Davis
The first interview I've done in bed.
Mark Seal
We sift through innumerable accounts. 35 pages isn't very much, many of them conflicting.
Steve Covino
That's nonsense.
Mark Seal
There were 60 pages and try to get to the truth of what really happened.
Steve Covino
And they said we're finished, this is over. Not only is not going to work, you got to get rid of those guys.
Mark Seal
It's just that Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli features new and archival interviews with Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Evans, James Caan, Talia Shire and many others.

So where else are you going to find a show with that much athleticism and football insight? Based in Nashville, we're more than just your basic NFL show. We talk sports, but we talk pop culture and music and a little bit of everything because we got lots to say. I texted you and you text me back. Now I don't know if you have the update, but like all the little thumbs up and heart and stuff, like it's all colored. They changed it and the heart's a little pink. It felt like I told you I loved you. I'm going to be honest, it was a little pink.
Steve Covino
There was something sentimental when you, when you Send it. It's like, do I send the heart now?

A.
Rich Davis
Did it say Thursday?
Steve Covino
A. Stop it.
Rich Davis
What a Thursday. A night for Canada. Congratulations. We talked about the four nations title. Big win and ot.
Steve Covino
I was shocked when I watched last night. Yeah, the Canadians didn't have the floppy heads like they do in South Park.
Rich Davis
I thought they had floppy heads. I'm so confused at first. But anyway, we watched, we enjoyed great time. We talked about it. We'll talk about it again later on.
Steve Covino
Cavino's a trader. He's been eating ketchup chips and poutine all day and Tim Hortons. I'm like, dude, this guy.
Rich Davis
Yeah, no, that's me.
Steve Covino
When he go there for good.

Steve Covino
Let me ask you besides work trips, because we've done some really fun broadcasts in Canada. Vancouver, Toronto. We went to Windsor when the Super Bowls in Detroit because someone said go to the strip clubs. I mean restaurants in Windsor. Yeah, but have you ever gone there on your own? Not work related to where? Canada? Yes. For what?
Rich Davis
I don't know. I have though.
Steve Covino
I was, I went to college.
Rich Davis
A young man because the drinking age was 18.
Steve Covino
I was gonna say, hey, dope. That was why I was asking. When I went to Syracuse, people would go to Niagara Falls and go on the other side just because they were like, we could drink younger. That was like. That was the upstate New York. You know, you're in the border town.
Rich Davis
Very underrated thing to do.
Steve Covino
Yeah, that was always a thing. You go to the casino and you drink underage in Canada.
Rich Davis
Well, shout out to Our Canadian friends, we got a lot of them, but a big night. But right now, we're wrapping up our conversation about Travis Kelsey. If you just joined us, the stat was. And the story was there's just speculation that it would cost 2.5 million to release them, but they would save $17 million. So that's sort of like getting ready. Getting rid of one of your main guys just for the greater good of the future. Makes you think about.
Steve Covino
It makes fiscal sense. But when you talk about emotions with the fans and the Swifties and the money that, believe it or not, I know it sounds ridiculous, but you were saying before the money that even the owner's daughter said that being tied to Taylor Swift brings in hundreds of millions of dollars.
Rich Davis
I'm not sure how much financial sense it makes. It actually does make. When you factor that in, when you factor in generations of new fans that they would keep if he retired or ended his career as a chief with all these Swifty fans, it's ridiculous, but it makes us think of those players that you lost because he is part of the heart and soul and fabric of that franchise. And this run that they've had those moments as a kid or maybe as an adult where, like, they got rid of my guy, that's just. And, you know, it's kind of hard for me. There's so many moments, but one that does come to mind, like, we have sort of, like, our standard answers. One that always comes to mind for me is Robinson Canoe, because I always thought he was going to be that dude. Like. Like, he's the guy. Homegrown guy. I thought he was going to be a Yankee forever. And when he took the bag and went to Seattle, it was like. It was heartbreaking.
Steve Covino
Everyone else laughed. You cried.
Rich Davis
No, seriously, it was like, what?
Steve Covino
You know, I'm reading our Danny, while you get the phones rolling, I'm reading our feedback on X and Instagram. Let's see. How about this one? When Neil Smith left the Chiefs to go to the Broncos. That's from Michael. He said, at that moment, I became numb.
Rich Davis
Yeah, Wes. Wes Johnson hit us up and said Garnett when he left Minnesota.
Steve Covino
I'm a grown man, and I cried as a Chargers fan when Keenan Allen said, nah, I'm gonna go become a Bear. Wilbur Marshall leaving the Bears. That was from Total Sports Podcast. Hit us up saying, that was a big one. We're getting a lot of feedback. And yeah, Kevin Garnett, again, Kevin Garnett was a big one. Oh, how about this? Jordan said, when Griffey Jr. Was traded from the Mariners. He thought that guy was a lifer.
Rich Davis
That might be a number one answer.
Steve Covino
Tracy McGrady from the Magic. That's from Sinkler, who hit us up.
Rich Davis
So, you know, the thought of Kelsey leaving the Chiefs, that. That wouldn't sit right with a lot of people.
Steve Covino
You know what Sort of felt weird and it didn't happen, but it felt inevitable. And, you know, as you saw, they pulled the 180 real quick. Didn't you get the gist that Steve Cohen was like, yeah, later, later. Pete Alonzo.
Rich Davis
Yeah, absolutely.
Steve Covino
And for a minute, I was like.
Rich Davis
That was a bad move to make. I thought he was your guy. I honestly thought you guys weren't appreciating him enough and showing him the respect he deserved as a man.
Steve Covino
And it seems like, you know, obviously it all worked out and people were projecting, oh, he's gonna have a big year with that protection. With Lindor leading off and Soto and the lineup, Viento is coming into his own. But there was a moment where it seemed like, yo, Pete's really gonna go. And you're like, pete Alonzo's a blue jay. That would have been whack because that was, like, the most likely landing spot. I remember thinking, my daughter, who's 7, and my son, who's 5, Pete's probably, like, the first met they know, because I'm like, that's polar bear Pete. So it would have been weird to be like, kids, he's gone.
Rich Davis
He's gone.
Steve Covino
What do you mean, dad?
Rich Davis

The Herd with Colin Cowherd: Hour 2 - Travis Kelce's Future
Release Date: February 21, 2025
Host/Authors: Steve Covino, Rich Davis, Dallas Goddard
Platform: iHeartPodcasts and The Volume
The primary focus of this episode revolves around the future of Kansas City Chiefs' star tight end, Travis Kelce. Hosts Steve Covino and Rich Davis delve deep into the speculation surrounding Kelce's potential departure from the team and the multifaceted implications of such a move.
Financial Implications:
Steve Covino outlines the financial aspects, highlighting that the Chiefs could save approximately $17 million in salary cap space by releasing Kelce, at a minimal cost of $2.5 million in dead cap space.
"It would cost them $2.5 million to cut Travis Kelce. However, it would save them $17 million in salary."
[18:31] — Steve Covino
Impact of Kelce’s Relationship with Taylor Swift:
A significant portion of the discussion centers on Kelce’s high-profile relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift. The hosts examine how this relationship has inadvertently boosted the Chiefs' revenue and expanded their fan base, particularly attracting "Swifties" to the team.
"Travis Kelce by dating Taylor Swift have created generational fans."
[20:15] — Steve Covino
Rich Davis adds, emphasizing the long-term benefits of retaining Kelce beyond just his on-field performance:
"If he retires a chief, you got to factor in that every young girl and this sounds silly guys, but this is the truth. Every young girl who was impacted by them dating that are now considered Chiefs."
[19:44] — Rich Davis
Fan and Revenue Considerations:
The conversation underscores the delicate balance teams must maintain between financial prudence and maintaining a strong, engaged fan base. The hosts debate whether the immediate financial savings outweigh the potential long-term revenue from Kelce’s increased visibility due to his relationship with Swift.
"What are they more interested in their cap space and winning or keeping hundreds of millions of dollars of Swifty revenue as part of their team."
[19:29] — Steve Covino
Shifting gears, the hosts commend the NHL's innovative Four Nations Tournament, which has significantly boosted hockey's popularity, even among those who rarely watch the sport.
Enhanced Competitiveness and Sportsmanship:
Rich Davis praises the tournament for its competitive spirit and the pride players showcased for their countries, likening it to an Olympic atmosphere.
"It felt like an Olympic type of atmosphere last night. And that's sort of what we got on a random Thursday."
