Doug Gottlieb
This is Doug Gottlieb from All Ball with Doug Gottlieb. Listen, I'm gonna get serious for a minute and talk about something personal. The hate in our country is getting out of control. In fact, it's at an all time high and people are facing just too much hate. A lot of people don't think it's a problem. I can tell you I've experienced it firsthand, you know, living outside of the country in Russia when my teammates found out I was Jewish. And at the time, granted this is 25 years ago, I couldn't get into the country of Dubai. They just treated me differently. I knew what they were saying in Russian because I could speak it, but they didn't know I understood that they were talking behind my back. Look, there's lots of examples of it, but it's going to take all of us to stop this sort of hate because we're all on the same team in this country. So let's take a break from our hate so our team can regroup and regain our momentum. We need to take a timeout against hate. Visit Stand up to all hate.org to help and join me in calling for timeout against hate by following the at what's up with Hate? Or posting the blue square emoji. Stand up to all hate.org that's the place to go if you want to help.

39 years coaching college or pro football. 6 with the Bears, 5 with the Dolphins. Last Dolphin coach to win a playoff game? He's my buddy, Dave Wonstadt. He's joining us live from Chicago right now. Well, I gotta imagine that town is unhappy. I mean, it's, it's not losing, it's the way they lost. I don't even know, is it a good, I mean, is it a job you'd even consider taking? Is it that bad? What are the positives there?
Dave Wannstedt
Well, the positive are that you're going to have a full house every week. And this is a football town. I mean, even in tough times, you know, when the Bulls were having their heyday and obviously the Blackhawks and on and on. I mean, it's a Bears town, it always will be. And they have a quarterback that's got some talent. So yes, it's a, it's a darn good job. But no, you're right, the tond is just turned upside down right now. All that I do is radio and TV for them. And I was walking up the other morning at 7:00 to do a show. I didn't even have a cup of coffee yet and the guy stopped me on the street and wanted to start cussing me out. You and those damn Bears wants that. I said, buffy, relax, relax. I mean, he's got. How'd you like to work next to him all day?
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, wow. Yeah. So here's my take. Would you go with a young offensive coordinator like a Ben Johnson and just get Caleb right. Would you go with a guy that's more of a tough physical culture builder like Vrabel? Is there a, is there a perfect choice?
Dave Wannstedt
Well, I think here, and obviously I'm a defensive guy, so I, you people would say I'm going to side with the defense. But, but in this particular case, you know, I, and I was at coach at the University of Pittsburgh when Mike Tomlin got hired at the Steelers and he had Bruce Arings and he had Dick LeBeau and he had Ben Roethlisberger who had won a Super Bowl. Mike can come in, be the head coach over everything and play that role with a young quarterback. You know, there's nine, there's what, five rookies starting this year? Yeah, five second year or four second. Three or four second year quarterbacks. So my point is the offensive guy, you want somebody, I think at the Bears that's an offensive minded coach that can grow with Caleb. Now when you look at these offensive coaches, I wouldn't look at a one year wonder offensive coordinator or six game wonder offensive coordinator. Look at these guys that have some history to them. Colin, two or three years. Because let me tell you what happened to me when I was at the Bears, Mike. There we go to play us, win a playoff game here. The next year, my offensive coordinator leaves me, Ron Turner, he goes to University of Illinois, I get another offensive coordinator. I'm at the Dolphins. Two years into it, playoffs, 12 wins, 11 wins. Chan Dailey leaves me, goes to Georgia Tech. I hired North. Turner comes on two years with north, winning 10 games a year. North takes the Raiders job. So going on my fifth year at the Dolphins, I was on my third offensive coordinator and they all say this is the catch. They all say, oh no, no, we'll make the terminology and we'll keep the system the same for the quarterback. They don't, they all believe in things that they've been successful and that's what you get into. That's why an offensive guy that has experience I think really would benefit the quarterback.
Colin Cowherd
You know, it's, it's interesting. Interesting. As we look at the emergence of run games. Baltimore, Detroit, the Rams with Kyron Williams. You start looking at the NFL right now. Saquon Barkley, Eagles, the run game is back. And do you have a belief why? I mean there was a two year period, nobody wanted to pay him. I'm looking around the league now. Washington, Atlanta leads their division all the teams now, Buffalo with James Cook. The run game is back. Why, in your opinion?
Dave Wannstedt
Well, number one, I think that it helps the young quarterbacks immensely. Yeah, if you've got a young quarterback and you can run the football, boy, does that help him. As far as being in manageable third downs, that's the opposite of what the Bears are doing. Bears are in shotgun. I had a great conversation with Troy Aikman the other day. He was on my radio show and Troy was talking about how the Kyle Shanahan tree, the McVeighs, the guy at Minnesota, obviously McVeigh, all these guys that come under that tree, LaFleur, they all were under center a lot of the time. And it's all timing steps and get the ball out quick, he said. And Troy made the point. He says that's where obviously your best play action passes come. Who's going to fall for a play action pass when they got in a shotgun? So I think that the guys that are running it, and I looked this morning, it's funny you bring that up. Six of the top 10 running backs in the NFL right now are all the top teams you mentioned. Obviously, you know, most of them right there. So my point is, I think that it helps the young quarterbacks. It gives your quarterback a chance to convert third downs and obviously you're going to move the change, you're going to score points and it rests your defense. You know, I mean, these. All these teams now all of a sudden are getting better with defense as the year goes on. Why is that? Because they're rested. They're not playing as many snaps as if they're throwing at every dime.
Colin Cowherd
Philadelphia's coach Nick Ceriani. I have multiple instances of a hand gesture at a Super bowl, arguing with a position coach. Feisty last week with Zach Ertz yelling at fans. It's not the way you would have done it. I mean, Philly's an emotional town. He's an emotional guy. So it's working. But what do you make of it when you see this stuff?
Dave Wannstedt
Yeah, that. That turns me off. I mean, I don't believe in that stuff. I wouldn't do that stuff. But I will say this. I think the last few weeks Nick's kind of gotten a little bit quieter and he's. And they're one of the few teams, they're in the top 10 in offense and defense and two other things that tells me that he's got control of his team. You know, they have the second fewest penalties in the National Football League. They're plus six in turnover margin in the NFL right now. So all the things that win game for you sometimes that people don't want to talk about, boy, they are doing a very good job. And they went out and they hired Vic Fangio, you know, and they got the top defense right now in the NFL. So I think, you know, I had a problem with some of the things that he did, but I think overall he's doing a very good job. He's got good people, he's letting them work. Kellen Moore is doing a great job with the offense and that's, that's a key to being a head coach.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, so I gotta ask you. Packers are going to Minnesota to play the Vikings. So you got J.J. mcCarthy and if you let Sam Darnold go, you got a rookie contract for five years. You can go buy any weakness. Daniel Jones can be a backup or you can keep Darnold, who's red hot. What do you, if you ran the team, you're the GM of this team. Even if you're the coach, what do you do with Darnold? Now you can argue, hey, everybody's going to succeed with Jordan Addison and everybody's going to succeed with Justin Jefferson and T.J. hawkinson. Is it the parts, is it Sam? What do you do with Darnold in that situation?
Dave Wannstedt
Well, just, just look at Chicago. I mean look at our receivers, right? Dunes a DJ Moore, Kellen, right Alan. They've got his commit at tight end. They've got as good a skill people as anybody and it doesn't mean anything. I would keep Sam Darnold, you know, and I think you could probably get him. What did Baker sign for call in three years? Around 100 million. Yeah, I think that he would, he would be. Because you don't know J.J. mcCarthy. I mean look how many of these first round quarterbacks that miss. You know, I think J.J. is going to be a great player, but we don't know that where we see what Sam does. And I don't know, I think the Vikings are going to come out of this thing and end up winning a division. I really do.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, host the packers this weekend. Finally. You do a lot of college football. You were obviously a coach at Pitt. You're a great recruiter. You were tied with Jimmie Johnson for years at the college level. Ohio State, Oregon. Listen, the first round of the playoff, the road teams were awful. I think we go to neutral fields, the games will be much more competitive. I really worry about Texas. I always feel Texas leaves too many points on the sideline. I watched Ohio State and I think they're so dynamic. Ryan Day gets a lot of crap. You do big ten network stuff. So you've seen Ohio State every week. Have they lost to Michigan and Oregon? But if you felt like all year long did you feel like Ohio State was the best team? Did you feel Oregon was. What do you make of that matchup?
Dave Wannstedt
No, I thought Oregon was, to be honest with you, up until about two weeks ago, three weeks ago, I think Ohio State, everyone, they have the most talent. When they played Oregon the first time, it's very difficult. Yes, it was out of Oregon, we know that. But it's very difficult to practice the type of speed early in the year that Oregon has on their football team. At running back, at quarterback, at receiver. Defensively they are fast football team. And you know, I remember we were at Miami and we would play the Oklahoma's in the world. I mean it took us time. We could. You couldn't simulate that in practice.
Colin Cowherd
Right.
Dave Wannstedt
But I think it's. The year's gone on. I think Ohio State has found its roots rhythm. I think they've recommitted to the running game where they're a lot more balanced right now. And I like Ohio State right now where they're at. Early on they were just so caught up in this wide receiver talent and we're going to open it up and on and on. I mean that's why they lost to Oregon the first game. I think they had seven runs the whole second half, you know, so they know, seriously, they've recommitted to the run game. They've got two outstanding backs and all those kids. There was about seven guys that would have been top two three round draft picks at Ohio State. They all came back for one reason, to win that championship. And boy, I think, I think last week beating Tennessee, that, that was a lot of pressure. I mean, all right, talking about this is sec, scc, Tennessee, you know, everybody should be in playoffs from the sec. I'll tell you what, it wasn't even a game that did a lot for Ohio State's confidence.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I agree. Dave Wanstadt, one of the good guys. Bears, Dolphins, Big Ten network. Great seeing you as always, coach.
Dave Wannstedt
All right, Colin, be safe, buddy.
Colin Cowherd
All right. In Chicago in his condo overlooks the city. He has so much information and so many stories and I don't know, I was very much Vrabel in Chicago. That Ben Johnson thing after last night, I don't know. I'm watching Bryce Young resurgence, Sam resurgence. Baker resurgence. All about a coordinator or an offensive coach. I mean, it's just Herbert with Harbaugh. Herbert's always been good. Jared Goff with Dan Campbell, Jared Goff's always been good. That's different. But when a quarterback has lost, how do you resurrect the franchise? How do you resurrect the quarterback? Not the franchise, the kid. It's generally offensive coach, certain sensibility the defensive guys don't have. Hey, you all know the Aflac commercials, right? With the famous duck and the coaches. Great commercials. But did you know that AFLAC is a leader in supplemental insurance? That's what the duck is quacking about, helping cover gaps. So, like, this is how I think of Aflac. Let's say you have an all pro linebacker. Anytime there's a gap in the defensive line, you know he's gonna fill it, no problem because he's an all pro. Aflac does the same thing. If there's a gap in your health insurance, Aflac wants to better protect you by helping close the gap. You're sick, you're injured. Aflac can pay cash to help fill the gaps your health insurance can leave behind. You can use the cash, put it towards whatever you need. Rent, mortgage payments, medical bills. It's completely up to you. Look, life can be tough. Fortunately, Aflac is tougher. I mean, we're talking middle linebacker, tough. To learn more about how Aflac can help fill the gaps health insurance can leave behind, visit aflac.com jmac with the news.
Dave Wannstedt
No, no, turn on the news.
Colin Cowherd
This is the Herdline news.
J. Mac
All right, let's get started. Started with the Detroit Lions. That Ben Johnson, their offensive coordinator, and Dan Campbell, do they play their guys Monday night? If the Vikings lose on Sunday to the packers, you know, and. And the Lions have the number one seed. That's interesting. And that's why, you know, week 1718 betting is so difficult.
Colin Cowherd
Yes.
J. Mac
I'm not touching Lions ners. So if the Vikings win on Sunday against Green bay, the Week 18 game between Minnesota and Detroit becomes a winner take all contest for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Which means that the Lions game against the Niners Monday could have no impact on the race at all. Dan Campbell. I don't want to hear about it.
Dave Wannstedt
It's easy for everybody. That way all the critics can jump out and start attacking, but that way you don't have to debate them anymore. We're bringing everything we got to this game and we are playing. I don't care what it looks like and where it's at, or who's this, who's that. We're going out to play and win this game out on the west coast. So there you go.
J. Mac
Don't love it. Sounds like a guy who's inside the. They just scored a touchdown. It's a two point conversion time. We're going penalty backs you up. We're still going. Remember that against the Cowboys. Yeah. I don't like this new information. What do you say? New Information, New opinion, New opinion. So Dan Campbell should be like, oh, we'll see, we'll see what's going on. We'll see what happens this weekend. I don't know what.
Colin Cowherd
Well I think he, you know how like as a parent it's much easier to go from tough parent to softer parent. You can't go from ice cream for breakfast dad to disciplinarian. The kids don't buy it. So I think it's easier to be hyper aggressive Dan Campbell and be a little less aggressive than be guy that never takes a gamble into wild wild west coach who's rolling the dice. And so I think he is whole holding on to sort of the hyper aggressive model. And I think there will come a time in one of these games over the next month that he can pull back a little and just say it made sense. But I do think it's always better to be tough dad and move back to a little more empathetic dad than it is softy and to your kids aren't going to buy it. Your team's not going to buy, hey, I mean business. If you've been like the nice coach and the soft coach and the ice cream for breakfast dad, it's tough to pivot to that.
J. Mac
Yeah, I, I, I do think Detroit could really use that buy. I mean everybody could. But this team is so walking wounded right now. Defensively, offensive, like I think they really need to buy. Next up, Colin is the Chicago Bears. Last night ghastly performance, interim head coach Thomas Brown. It's been a rough go, shall we say 10 game losing streak. And then last night in the fourth quarter, I mean this is, this is like laughable stuff. Colin. Chicago was down three with all three timeouts. Fourth and one from its own 39 with 214 left in the game. Fourth and one became fourth and sixth. False start. Brown sent out the punting unit only to call a timeout. Colin, it was just an embarrassing stuff from the Bears. They ended up converting the fourth down but stalled and didn't even get to kick a field goal.
Colin Cowherd
I mean they had a great touchdown throw and it got called back.
J. Mac
That Caleb pass was incredible.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, I mean he does that once, twice a game. You can see all, you can see the sizzle. There's no question he's got the talent.
J. Mac
Thomas Brown not, not a good stretcher for the head.
Colin Cowherd
Well, I, he's been asked to go from quarterback coach to play caller in a very short stretch. I think it's an unwinnable situation. I don't blame the coach, it's. The coaching's not good. Just like when you fired Robert Sala, you fire Matt Eberfluous, you're firing the best coach on the staff. Sala was the best jets coach. Eberfluss was probably the best coach. That's why it was a head coach. So when you do that, you are. I don't think it's ever a good thing to let the best player, the best coach out of the building. That's a tough call, especially mid season.
J. Mac
Tough. One final story is Albert Brear reported last night that the Seahawks quote love Geno Smith as a player and a person. Breer also said that Geno would be looking for commitment from the org this offseason. Gino is due 25 million cash next season and there are now nine quarterbacks making more than 50 mil a year. Gino is 34 years old, probably his last chance at a big payday. I mean, does Gino have any, does he have a leg to stand on? If he wants to play hardball, say, hey, everybody else is getting 50 mil, you got to bump me up. I don't know that he does.
Colin Cowherd
His passer rating has gone backwards three years in a row as they've added better weapons. So again, nice guy, nice story. You're in a division with Stafford, McVeigh, Shanahan and by the way, it's okay, you can say, well, I mean, I just think if you look at the NFC now, there was about a two year window and one of those was Geno's first year in Seattle. There's about a two year window where Russell left Seattle and Aaron left the Jets. And it feels like, you know, there was a, there was a little packers for this. Yeah, there was just a little bit of a window for the Seahawks, you know, and they, they. Geno was a Pro Bowler and Goff was getting settled in in Detroit and Detroit wasn't Detroit yet. And now Goff's humming.
J. Mac
You're right.
Colin Cowherd
And Stafford's humming and Jordan Love's great and Sam Darnold's great. And you start looking around and going, gino doesn't add up. He's like the seventh to eighth best quarterback now. Jaden D. Daniels is humming, Caleb Williams is going to get a legit coach. You're going to look up and you're going to have yourself the eighth to ninth best quarterback. And Jalen Hurts is better.
J. Mac
That was that Seattle year with Gino. I'm getting triggered because that was the year I had to shave the thing in the side of my head. Yeah. Remember when I was like, oh, Seahawk, that was 500.
Colin Cowherd
One of my favorite days in the history of the show.
J. Mac
I mean, we should bring that back. Gino has cratered since and the window is closed.
Colin Cowherd
I don't know if he's cratered or the NFC got better fast, but his numbers are down.
J. Mac
And like you said, they've, they've got awesome wide receivers, really good running back.
Colin Cowherd
Smith and Jacob can play Metcalf. Lockett can still play, Noah Fant, Charbonnet Walker when he's healthy, cross the left tackle. They got players. It's not a lack of players.
J. Mac
And I'm sure Gino will be like, hey, it was a, it was a new head offensive coordinator. He came from college, blah, blah, blah. But like, I don't know.
Colin Cowherd
Jaden Daniels has a new head coach and coordinator. He's pretty good. Can't use that. I mean, that's not a legit excuse. Michael Penix got thrown into a game. I don't know. He looked really good.
J. Mac
Ye. So Sam Darnold, does that, does that do anything for you in Seattle?
Colin Cowherd
I.
J. Mac
Cousins.
Colin Cowherd
How about Russell Wilson again? I would say Kirk Cousins for a year. One year, Kirk Cousins.
J. Mac
And you have to draft a quarterback.
Colin Cowherd
Yes. I don't. Riley Leonard, third round, Seattle's roster set outside of quarterback. I mean, I'm dead serious on this. I would make the argument if you're Seattle and you love Cam Ward, would you give up three first and DK Metcalf? I'm just throwing it out there.
J. Mac
The history, like the history of trading up for the number one pick. Okay, the Bryce Young deal. I know he's played better. It still looks like historically. That's all right.
Colin Cowherd
J. Mac with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by the herd line. He was 60 last week. Will he come back down to earth? Will he regress to the mean JMAX picks? Next, be sure to catch live editions of the Herd.

Anytime there's a gap in the defensive line, you know he's going to fill it, no problem because he's an all pro. To learn more about how Aflac can help fill the gaps health insurance can leave behind, visit aflac.com go to the.

Fox Sports app to make your picks. One of the questions is which QB will have the most passing yards? Colin, we got Baker Mayfield vs. The Panthers, Jordan Love vs. The Vikings, Darnold vs. The packers or Cooper Rush in Philadelphia.
Colin Cowherd
Baker Mayfield against the Panthers.
J. Mac
I like that call. Though he has struggled in. I think the defensive coordinator got there. He struggled in three or four games against them, including earlier this year. But given those options, I. I don't hate your pick. I think you're warming up just for the stretch run there, buddy.
Colin Cowherd
A couple of five and O's will change America's opinion.
J. Mac
All anybody cares about is playoffs. Nail those pick against the Chiefs. There you go.
Colin Cowherd
Rough regular season. All right, here we go. The former newspaper guy made headlines for a living. Then he wanted to make some real money and moved into digital and tv. Tomorrow's headlines today, Chargers, Patriots. I stayed away in Foxborough. I stayed away from this one. What. What do you make of it?
J. Mac
Listen, I don't love the card this week. I'll be up front. I don't love it. I mean, I bet these five bowl games today, like total garbage games, just threw money, pizza money for fun.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
J. Mac
But let's start. Chargers, Patriots, Patriots. I like this Chargers team. I like the vibes. Patriots look good. Last week ended up losing. The headline will be McConkey C. McConky. Do bolts go bananas. I will take the Chargers in New England. This line's at four and a half. It's creeping up a little bit. There's some interesting stuff here. So, hey, Christmas week, who wants to travel east east to play a game in the cold weather? However, chargers have had four 1pm starts this year. They have dominated the first half of all those games. They've led at halftime of all four. Now, they're not playing great teams. One was Pittsburgh, but what does that say? Colin? That's a Jim Harbaugh thing. This dude is always prepared. And I do. Look at this Patriots team. They were. They gave everything max effort last week in Buffalo, right? Hey, we want to play spoiler division rival. I think they let their guard down a little bit this week. I don't like some of the vibes in New England. Some of the chatter from the head coach, Mayo, is he coming back? Are we certain? Do you think he's definitely back next year? Because I.
Colin Cowherd
Yes.
J. Mac
Okay. You think Craft is going on the cheap? All right, so I'll go with Chargers. Drake May has had a pretty good, you know, run this year. I think he's shown well, but this Chargers defense has played excellent. I'll take the Chargers 2713.
Colin Cowherd
Tomorrow's headlines. Today, Broncos at the Bengals. I love Denver in this spot.
J. Mac
You know, listen, we love talking Broncos on this show. You have made them like, what, Maybe like the. The. The. Like the show favorite. You love this team because you're all over them. However, the headline will be mall walking Bengals Keep Broncos out of Step. Look at that little mall walking. My mom likes to go to the mall and walk around in Florida because it's too hot. I cannot get enough of Patrick Certain versus Jamar Chase. So I've been digging into this matchup. Patrick certain this season, one touchdown allowed. He has allowed one catch over 20 yards. He's been locked down, but he's going up against Chase, who leads the NFL in receptions, yards, touchdowns. He's on. On fire. They met in 2021. You want to guess who had the better of that matchup? Jamar Chase. One catch for three yards against certain. Now it's 2021. A lot has changed, but this is interesting. If T. Higgins cannot go, I will not feel good about my Bengals pick. But ultimately, I think Cincinnati gets it. I think they're on a mission. I would not be surprised if we hear after the fact, Joe Burrow made an impassioned plea in the locker room. I want to get in the playoffs. You're seeing a different Burrow. He's been fired up on the bench. Talking back a little bit to the coach.
Colin Cowherd
A little intense.
J. Mac
I like Burrow here getting the dub and the Bengals win and cover.
Colin Cowherd
You said your mom likes walking in the mall, J. Mack, Everybody's mom likes walking.
J. Mac
Yeah, That's a grandma thing. I did not know that. Okay. Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Tomorrow's headlines. Today, the game that I didn't put in the blazing fall five, but it was the last game. I like the Rams in this spot. It's a number situation. What say you?
J. Mac
I could have swore Tuesday on this show. You lied.
PayPal Representative
I did.
J. Mac
Yeah, so.
Colin Cowherd
But the number got worse.
J. Mac
Who cares? It's six and a half. The headline will be Pookaboo. I see you playing Rams ain't no fun in games. Oh, my gosh. This is the ultimate revenge spot of the week. Do you remember the Cardinals smashed them this year? 4110 Ulta, massive beatdown. Puka did not play. Cooper cup left in the first quarter and it was just an absolute beatdown. I. I like the Rams here. Big. This feels like a little payback. And if you're Arizona, man, you went into last week. Come on, we got. We were leading the division and it's.
Colin Cowherd
Starting to fall apart.
J. Mac
You're playing the Panthers. You start slow, you come back, you lose in overtime. Overtime, loss. Gotta travel back home. Wounds. Yeah, I'm seeing both tackles out. I'm seeing James Connor is questionable. Does Connor just say, hey, let me just shut it down. Nothing to play. I like the Rams here. McVeigh wouldn't be surprised if this was 37, 20. Rams really put on a show. Hey, you. You gave out the number. What, what does McVay like? Ten and one in December. He is a great late season coach and I think they, they put it.
Colin Cowherd
On Andy Reid and Belichick really good. When it gets frosty. Tomorrow's headlines today, Colts at Giants. I thought about this one too. I. I tell you, I like that Colts roster.
J. Mac
I do. And I like the Colts a lot. You see that number? It's coming down and I'll tell you why. The headlines will be just like we drew it up. Giants get closer to locking up number one pick. Look at day ball there. Listen, Drew Locke, he was bad against Atlanta, which is a bottom feeder defense. However, in the last 30 minutes here, Anthony Richardson has not practiced yet all week. They thought he was going to go today. So now they just listed him as questionable. And Joe Flacco was taking first team reps. Yeah, all week. So now it's Joe Flacco, which to me, when last we saw Flacco, it was pretty rough.
Colin Cowherd
It was pretty rough.
J. Mac
He was awful.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
J. Mac
And now I'm a little buyer's remorse. However, like. Like the headline said, this is a Giants team that wants the number one pick badly. You look at who's starting on the offensive line for them. A lot of defensive players who are. Who are these dudes? Practice squad guys. I mean, Colin, they're not a competitive team this year. I do think Flacco can do enough. Jonathan Taylor, by the way, running wild. He is having a very good season. They got a good team, man.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, I did. Seattle and the Colts, their quarterback away. I like the rosters. I like the GMs.
J. Mac
We like stichting. I think the Colts will be fine here at seven and a half. A big number to be laying on the road. But the Giants going for the winless season at home. It's bad in New York between the jets and the Giants. It is. It's a. It's a rough go for New York football.
Colin Cowherd
Two more to go. I'm interested in this one. Tomorrow's headlines. Today, your. Your optimism is.
Chase Freedom Representative
Has.
Colin Cowherd
Has pivoted to skepticism and cynicism on the Jets, Jets, Bills.
PayPal Representative
What.
Colin Cowherd
What do you like?
J. Mac
Isn't what like July and August? Come on. When Aaron Rodgers wasn't saying nonsense. Colin, this one could get ugly. The headline will be Green with envy. Wicked Wits from West melts Down Aaron Rodgers. You know, Mangini said something awesome earlier. Aaron's talking like he wants to be released.
Colin Cowherd
I know it.
J. Mac
You know I did. I thought at the time he was just taking a shot, but. From Mangini, who was the head coach to say that. And Mangini dealt with Woody.
Colin Cowherd
Well, he knows Woody.
J. Mac
You know how ticked off Woody Johnson must be. And oh, by the way, I'm looking at the jets all of a sudden. Devonte Adams, not practicing this week. Sauce Gardner not practicing.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, no, no. The jets injury reports. It's their best players.
J. Mac
The Penn State tackle out. Two other linemen haven't practiced. AVT has not. So this line's starting to creep up to nine and a half. One of the producers just texted me. It's hitting 10 in some spots. So I know Buffalo has nothing to technically play for, right? But this is Buffalo. Jets, Buffalo Homes.
Colin Cowherd
A tough out.
J. Mac
Yeah, I. I think this one could get ugly. And Go sideways. I'll go 31 to 7 bills with.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, I took the Buckeyes over the Ducks. Tomorrow's headlines today, that Boise State Nittany Lions games got your interest peaked.
J. Mac
So I. We loved the playoffs last week. I mean, it was, it was spectacular.
Colin Cowherd
Well, you did. I took dogs warming my heart. You took favorites. You were right.
J. Mac
Say favorites rolled at home. Now we go neutral site this week. Okay, I do like your Ohio State pick. I would add that now these games are Wednesday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
Colin Cowherd
Yes.
J. Mac
Yeah, so we got some time. We'll chew them up. But the headline for this one will be Ashton Powers running Back Shags Game Balls after Groovy performance. I'm going with an outright upset here. Double digit dog. Give me Boise State taking down Penn State. Wow. I took the points already. And the more I dig in list. I like Penn State a lot. They're great at home. We know under the whiteout scenario against smu, it was, it was a scene and SMU gave the game away. I don't think Boise is going to do that. And you. Look, I'm just telling you, if you want to have fun, go look up Ashton Genti versus Oregon this year. Oregon could not stop him under. And all of. Nobody stops this guy. And I know the competition wasn't great, but we're going to see this guy become like one of those, oh, this guy's legit. Carving up Penn State should be a good game. I'm. I'm more fired up for this, I think, than any of the games. Ohio State, Oregon's great. Texas, Arizona State a little less.
Colin Cowherd
Georgia. Notre Dame, baby.
J. Mac
Well, that's a backup quarterback for Georgia.
Colin Cowherd
It's Georgia.
J. Mac
And, and the Notre Dame stuff that's percolating behind the scenes, which we, which we alluded to yesterday. I don't know if we get to it here in headlines, but there's the College Football Playoff. I'm excited for.
Colin Cowherd
No, it's gonna be great. We do this at the end of every week. I force you to pick an upset. Let's go to the NFL schedule. Sorry, radio audience. I'm not going to read all the games. I, I like the Atlanta Falcons to upset the Washington commanders. Michael Pennix impressed me. Do you have an upset?
J. Mac
Well, what's the line on the Falcons? Four and a half. Is that really an upset? Oh, man, Colin, this is bleak. I'd rather take Arizona State against Texas than any of this poo poo platter.
Colin Cowherd
How about Carolina at Tampa?
J. Mac
Yeah, yeah, I'll go. Yeah, I guess I would Go Carolina. They've been feisty late in the season. Man, I saw Winfield ruled out another receiver.
Colin Cowherd
How about this? How about this? Are beat up today. If you could draft Bryce Young or C.J. stroud, who would you take?
J. Mac
I. I can't do it on a six game sample size. I would still take Strat. It's not.
Colin Cowherd
Bryce looks pretty good.
J. Mac
It's.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, Bryce looks pretty good.
J. Mac
He has looked. He's shown well. The Dallas game, he did not play well.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
J. Mac
A few weeks ago at home. Yeah, it's a, it's a tough NFL slate this week and the three games Saturday, so there's not a billion games Sunday. You know, this is a hang with the fam a little bit weekend or.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, yeah. Well, I'm, I'm, I'm. Saturday, I'm going to be watching football day.
J. Mac
Yeah, the Saturday games are must see. I don't know how I'm going to get out of family stuff, but you know, maybe put in a call, call me and act like there's like a big story and then I'll just tell the fam, hey, I need some time away.
Colin Cowherd
Breaking news or something.
J. Mac
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
PayPal Representative
All right.
Colin Cowherd
I can do that. There's a club we go to from time to time. Is a good time. Haven't been there in a while. You could go to the club.
J. Mac
I don't think the wife's gonna want you doing that, but.
Colin Cowherd

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Hour 3: Dave Wannstedt, Tomorrow's Headlines Today
Release Date: December 27, 2024
Introduction In the third hour of "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," host Colin Cowherd welcomes former NFL coach Dave Wannstedt to discuss the latest developments in professional football. The conversation delves into coaching challenges, quarterback development, the resurgence of the run game in the NFL, team dynamics, and upcoming game predictions. This detailed summary captures the key points, insightful analysis, and memorable quotes from the episode.
Timestamp: [03:21]
Colin Cowherd opens the discussion by addressing the current state of the Chicago Bears and the complexities of coaching in a city passionate about football. He questions whether the negativity from fans in Chicago is a reflection of the team's performance or the manner in which losses occur.
Dave Wannstedt responds by highlighting the unwavering support for football in Chicago despite recent struggles. He emphasizes the dedication of the fanbase and the inherent challenges that come with managing high expectations in a football-centric city.
Wannstedt [03:51]: “The positive are that you're going to have a full house every week. It's a football town, even in tough times.”
Timestamp: [04:37]
The conversation shifts to the critical role of offensive coordinators in developing young quarterbacks. Wannstedt draws from his extensive coaching experience, sharing anecdotes about the high turnover rate of offensive coordinators and its impact on team stability.
He underscores the importance of hiring experienced offensive-minded coaches who can adapt and grow with emerging quarterbacks, citing his own challenges with maintaining a consistent offensive strategy during his tenure with the Dolphins.
Wannstedt [04:54]: “An offensive guy that has experience really would benefit the quarterback. Consistency is key for development.”
Timestamp: [06:50]
Colin and Dave explore the renewed emphasis on the running game across the NFL. Wannstedt attributes this trend to the benefits it offers young quarterbacks, such as providing manageable third-down situations and resting defenses.
He references conversations with notable figures like Troy Aikman to highlight how quick play-action passes succeed against teams that predominantly use shotgun formations.
Wannstedt [07:28]: “It helps the young quarterbacks immensely. It gives your quarterback a chance to convert third downs and move the chains.”
Timestamp: [08:57]
The discussion moves to the Philadelphia Eagles and their head coach Nick Sirianni, focusing on his emotional reactions during games. Wannstedt critiques certain aspects of Sirianni's behavior but acknowledges the team's strong performance metrics.
He points out that despite occasional public outbursts, the Eagles maintain top rankings in offense and defense, minimal penalties, and a positive turnover margin, indicating effective overall coaching.
Wannstedt [09:19]: “They’re in the top 10 in offense and defense, and they have one of the few teams with a positive turnover margin. They are doing a very good job overall.”
Timestamp: [10:16]
Colin poses a hypothetical scenario regarding the Green Bay Packers’ quarterback situation, especially concerning Sam Darnold. The discussion revolves around whether to retain Darnold or explore other options, considering the potential cost and performance factors.
Wannstedt advocates for keeping Darnold, emphasizing his current performance and the uncertainties surrounding newer quarterbacks like J.J. McCarthy. He argues that investing in an established player could be more beneficial than taking a gamble on unproven talent.
Wannstedt [10:57]: “I would keep Sam Darnold. You don’t know J.J. McCarthy. I think the Vikings are going to come out of this thing and end up winning a division.”
Timestamp: [12:31]
Shifting focus to college football, the conversation examines Ohio State's recent performance against Oregon. Wannstedt discusses Ohio State's adjustment back to a balanced run game, which has revitalized their rhythm and overall performance.
He praises Ohio State for returning key players and recommitting to a more comprehensive offensive strategy, contrasting it with their initial overreliance on wide receiver talent that led to their early-season loss to Oregon.
Wannstedt [13:13]: “The year’s gone on, and I think Ohio State has found its rhythm. They’ve recommitted to the running game, and they have two outstanding backs.”
Timestamp: [33:01] onwards
In the latter part of the episode, Colin and Wannstedt engage in a lively discussion about various NFL matchups scheduled for the week. They analyze team performances, player statistics, and potential outcomes, providing their predictions for each game.
Key Highlights:
Wannstedt [34:42]: “I’d like the Rams here. It feels like a little payback.”
Timestamp: [27:04]
A pivotal segment covers strategies to rejuvenate a struggling franchise by focusing on quarterback performance. Wannstedt argues that the offensive coaching staff plays a significant role in maximizing a quarterback's potential, comparing cases like Jared Goff in Detroit and Matt Ryan in Atlanta.
He contends that successful quarterbacks require not just talent but also a supportive and innovative coaching environment to lead the team back to prominence.
Wannstedt [27:20]: “When a quarterback has lost, how do you resurrect the kid? It’s generally offensive coach, certain sensibilities the defensive guys don’t have.”
The episode concludes with a reflection on the importance of cohesive coaching strategies, the evolving dynamics of NFL offenses, and the critical role of quarterback development in both professional and college football. Dave Wannstedt’s insights provide a seasoned perspective on navigating the complexities of coaching in high-pressure environments and the strategic decisions that can influence a team's success.
