This is Doug Gotti from All Ball with Doug Gottlieb. Listen, I'm gonna get serious for a minute. The hate in our country is getting out of control. In fact, it's sadly at an all time high. But it's gonna take all of us to stop it. I mean, we're all on the same team in this country. So let's take a break from our hate so our team can regroup. We need to take a timeout against hate. Visit stand upto all hate.org to help and join me in calling for timeout against hate by following OTs upwithhate or posting the Blue square emoji.

All right, from the Athletic, let's go live. Diana Rossini is joining us and we got a, we got a bunch of stuff to talk about. I already talked jets last hour, so I want to go, I want to come from a different direction. So yesterday I wasn't privy to it, but apparently like NFL insiders were squabbling and bows and arrows yesterday on the Pete Carroll stuff. Now my takeaway is if players can play into their 40s, coaches can coach in their 70s. Pete Carroll details Culture Builder Relentless energy I guess people on the Internet were fighting over it. I buy it. I'm not saying best candidate. I think Vrabel is a stronger candidate probably. But the Pete thing doesn't feel like it's just made up out of thin air to me. What do you hear, Diana?
Greg Cosell
Yeah, it's definitely not made up. We most the insiders are aware that Pete Carroll has wanted to get back into the coaching game this entire time. This wasn't news specifically to the Chicago Bears or at least being connected to that makes a lot of sense, right? He's going to take an opportunity wherever he can get it. He's not just only looking at the Chicago Bears. He's going to be looking at every single opening and we'll see if whether teams will take this seriously. You know, I know the Internet, as you said, those Internet clowns at times are all arguing, oh, Pete's too old. Pete can't do this. I look at it this way. If you're the New York jets, for example, and you know that you got to clean up some things there, are you willing to take a risk on a first year head coach who's never done it, who doesn't know the paths, who doesn't know the challenges, the adversities, the big media market and just hope he can figure it out on the job. Or maybe you want to tap into a guy that's been there before, that's done it, that's been through some controversies over his life and has also found ways to win, build up a franchise and he's won at the highest level. So I don't think the Pete Carroll report right now is just to get some steam under him. I think it's a reality that Pete Carroll wants to be a head coach of an NFL team. We'll just see what team is going to be interested in Pete Carroll at this point.
Diana Rossini
So. An hour ago, Diana Rossini, the Athletics senior insider, an hour ago, Greg Cosell, who breaks down film for us on Thursday, said the Cowboys are offensively really well coached and Mike's got Cooper Rush playing at a DAC level. And we know they don't have much of a run game. We know they're rebuilding the O line. I don't know. But Jerry's always been, for all this maverick talk, he's always been a little more loyal to coaches than people give him credit for. My gut this morning is McCarthy is returning. I think he's a good coach. I don't like him as much as McVay. But what are you hearing?
Greg Cosell
Before you make a move at the head coaching position, you first take a look at who's available, right? So when you take a look around the league and you try to figure out who would Jerry Jones want to work with, is there a coach out there that makes a lot of sense for the Dallas Cowboys? And then I think that's where you get your answer. So your gut is that he sticks with McCarthy. And I can tell you people in the Dallas building that work under Jerry Jones claim they have no idea what they want to do there. And I just saw Stephen Jones recently and I asked him directly, what's the plan? And he said, we got to take a look at the entire body of work here. My response to that was, haven't you seen enough? But they really want to see how this thing finishes out. And every single week, I hear more and more coming out of Jerry's mouth. That tells you that he believes that Mike McCarthy can get this thing right. I can just tell you, though, what people around the league are saying. They think Mike McCarthy is going to be safe. We'll see what happens when this thing wraps up. But considering, what? A month and a half ago I was on the show talking to you about this. I assumed that this would be it. I thought that this was it for Mike McCarthy. They weren't winning. They seems lost. And now they're surging. And as Greg Cosell pointed out, their offense is clicking. So why are you going to move on to a guy who's won this many games for you? Perhaps maybe not in the big dance, but he's got all the right things. And I can tell you, if Mike McCarthy were to get dismissed, we'll call it, there will be teams interested in bringing Mike McCarthy in for an interview. I can tell you that I've had some conversations with teams around the league.
Diana Rossini
A couple years ago, Aaron Rodgers got visited by Sala and Woody Johnson. It was Kumbaya on his beautiful Malibu place. Yet this week Aaron says, I don't know if I'm coming back. Ask Woody. Which tells me it's a frostier relationship. I think Vrabel's the leading candidate in the room. I'd hire Dimitrov, Thomas Dimitrov as gm. I would trade Garrett Wilson. I'd keep Aaron. I would. I think he's played great the last eight weeks. I mean, I don't know where to start on this. First of all, gut feeling. Lot of bad stories on Woody and his kids. Is Aaron back next year? Let's start with that because the coaching thing we can talk about. But Aaron and Jets, I would bring him back. What say you?
Greg Cosell
Yeah, I think you're saying that just based on the last few weeks where you've seen him.
Diana Rossini
Yeah.
Greg Cosell
Run the offense pretty well. But there are more problems bond the scenes than you realize for. For the offense in general. Every day there's a new door opening here in terms of what the next steps are going to be. Three weeks ago I talked to people who are close to Rogers who said that, yeah, he probably wants this chapter of his time in New York to be over. There are others that say that Woody Johnson has been done with Aaron Rodgers for a while. And then we hear Rogers say he wants to be with the jets. And then the next day he says, maybe I'll be on the beach. Right. It's almost as if there's a lot of different versions of this right now because nobody really knows what they want to do next. And the jets really can't move forward with this until they get the GM and head coach in place and allow them to make the decision on what they want to do with Aaron Rodgers. At this point, I still don't think that this is going to be a marriage that sticks. Yeah. Just based on what I know on what's been going on behind the scenes over the last few months. You know, you point to the fact that you've heard a lot of stories coming out about what's going on. They're not stories. It's reporting that we did about really what the dysfunction has been behind the scenes. And Woody Johnson does have two sons, a 19 year old and a 17 year old who influenced their dad and have made suggestions over the last season or so. And Woody listens and Aaron Rodgers, when you hear him talk about some of the leaks, right, you hear him constantly complaining about It. And I think everyone listens to him and goes, you know what? He's right. Why are there so many leaks? Whereas I look at it as stop worrying about the leaks and worry about what that is that's coming out. Those problems that he's talking about, the problems that we're reporting on are things that have been hidden and that really need to get fixed. Which is why I know you say Dimitrov and Mike Vrabel are your top candidates. Why would those guys take this job? There's so much that has to get fixed. And if they really want a guy like Mike Vrabel, who's going to be the most sought after head coach right here in this free agent space once he becomes available, why would you not just find a way to find. Why wouldn't you just find out what Mike Vrabel wants at this point and go, who do you want your GM to be? How do you want to run this? Because the jets need answers and he will probably be able to provide you some. I just don't know if they're going to make it to a point and get them to even interview him by the time this thing goes. Because I know so many teams are trying to get interviews with Rabel once they're allowed to legally.
Diana Rossini
All right, finally, I want to talk about the Gerard Mayo situation. So I, when they hired him, my take was okay. It feels like it's too Belichickian. Break free from that stuff. Go offense. You're getting Drake May. I mean, I follow a lot of Patriot fans and you know, you'd think this is the worst coach in the league. Then I watched him last week against Buffalo and they go toe to toe with the Bills when they don't have close to the roster. So listen, if they, if they lose out, they're currently 3 12. It's ugly. But listen, the last few years with Bill were ugly. They have another great draft pick. I think I'd bring him back. But again, the heart of Boston, they've been so spoiled by it. You know, everybody's got everything must go liquidation sale. What's the latest with the crafts and Mayo? I know.
Greg Cosell
I wish some of those fans would live in Jacksonville for a year and see how they feel, right? They're so spoiled, but they're spoiled. But they hold their team accountable, which is why you have to love the fan base like this. They can never get enough. They forget so quickly. And you're right when you've got the quarterback because they've got the guy. That is what Everyone has been saying around the league, Drake may is the future. Right? They nailed that. And when you think about Robert Kraft and you think about how they are very comfortable with keeping things New England, they don't want to change things. They don't want to go in a different direction. Because if you're them, why would you. It's worked in the past the way. The way they want to do it has worked, which is why the Jerod Mayo thing, based on his experience, yeah, you're taking a big gamble here, but it makes sense because he speaks their language. He is New England. And the thought process was that Bill Belichick would sort of bring him into it and teach him. And he got to watch how Belichick did it. And I don't necessarily think what we're seeing on the field is very Belichick like. And I think that's the problem Boston fans have. It's great that he was a New England Patriot at one point, but they're not seeing those New England patriot ways in some of the performance on the field. Some of the things in the press conference. And I can tell you that the Kraft family, they were ready for the bumps and bruises here. They knew that a first time head coach is going to go through it. They are learning on the job in a really tough market. But you have to wonder if this has been good enough. And I can tell you the tone in that building went from, yeah, we're going to probably be safe, whereas I can tell you, people in the building do not feel that strongly about it anymore. It's really, I believe, going to come down to the last games here with Kraft really making a decision. Do you pull the band aid and just own it and say, you know what, we believed in him, we thought maybe had the pieces of what a great coach would be, but it's not going to be able to work. We don't have the time, we don't have the patience for it. We don't want to waste the years of a great young quarterback and then find someone that can come in. Or do you say, all right, maybe we just give them one more year. Yeah, but as we know, Colin, how many times do we see owners do this? Usually, usually if you're playing with it, if you're toying with it, if you're thinking about it, you should make the move because you always come back the next year and you'll end up firing the guy anyway. So most of those owners that have those doubts, they usually come through. And if Robert Kraft is having doubts, then this could be another opening we see available.
Diana Rossini
Yeah. And it's usually about seven new coaches a year. We're currently at three. So I think in the next week to two weeks you're going to see moves. There's a couple of big candidates, and you and I both think the Pete Carroll thing feels like it's got a pulse. Diana Rossini, hope you and your great family had a wonderful time. It's great seeing you. You know, you're just crushing in your job. Your podcast with Chase Daniels is outstanding and way to go. Congrats.

I hey, this is lavar Arrington here from up on Game and listen, I want to talk to you about something very serious for a minute, all right? Something personal to me and right now something that should be personal to you as well. In our country, the hate is at an all time high and it's like we're going backward. The hate is winning. We can't allow that, all right? It's out of control. So many different people, so many different groups are facing too much hate and it's enough. It's time for it to stop. We need to stop, regroup, change the momentum as a team, because that's what we are. Everyone in this country is on the same team, so let's act like it. And when a team can't get it together, what do you do? You call a timeout. And that's what we need to do. Call a timeout against hate. Let's think about what we say and do. And when we see hate, when we see someone doing or saying those things we know are wrong and hateful, we need to call it out. Imma call it out. You need to do the same thing. Visit Stand up to all hate.org to help and join me in calling for a timeout against hate by following at what's up with Hate? Or posting the blue square emoji.

Congratulations to CBS Sports and Sony Electronics for their first place wins for innovation in industry at this year's Unconventional Awards by T Mobile for Business In a collaboration that was clearly built on breaking new ground, CBS and Sony created a first of its kind broadcast for the PGA Championship. Using a custom built T Mobile private 5G network to power the live production, they deployed a 5G wireless camera system throughout the event. The network speed combined with Sony's innovative ultra low latency video codec allowed for seamless, high quality footage without disruption. With that innovative approach, CBS gave broadcasters the tools they need to do what they do best take their coverage to entirely new places. These innovations will shape the way live sports are covered moving forward, and for that, T Mobile congratulates Sony and CBS for their unconventional thinking.

We got to go back to Lamar Jackson. Man, he was on fire. He's having a great season. It's weird. He won the MVP last year, but he's played better this year. Lamar's 55 yards away from 4, 000 passing yards and 150 yards away from a thousand rushing yards. Yeah, he's got the second best passer rating in NFL history and also leads the league in total yards, total touchdowns, TD interception ratio. You know, these island games can swing some things. Remember last year, Lamar against Brock Purdy? Head to head, Ravens smashed the Niners. Remember that game? And then Lamar was the mvp. Yeah, I don't know if Lamar did enough yesterday to kind of get his name on equal footing as Josh Allen. I still think it's Josh Allen as mvp. But has Lamar swayed you at all with these? Like.
Diana Rossini
No. I mean, I think it's a coin flip. I think, you know, most valuable player. I don't think either team's winning seven games without the starting quarterback. So I, I, I'm, I'm, I'M comfortable with both. I put Saquon Barkley probably third, but I don't have a strong opinion. I think they're both spectacular. I thought yesterday he only went 10 for 15. So Derrick Henry was really the bellwether performer.
Colin Cowherd
Allen's minus 240. So you got about $240 to win 100. Lamar plus 180. Then Saquon a distant third and Jared Goff and four. Where's, where's Patrick Mahomes on the list? I don't see him. Oh, okay.
Diana Rossini
Yeah, that, that team has greater goals than MVPs. Yeah, they're not really into pennants and awards. They're into this big trophy named after Vince Lombardi.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Yeah, something like that. All right, next story. This is weird. I haven't heard a peep about this, but according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, after the Eagles lost to the commanders on the field, Nick Sirianni got into it with former Eagle slash current commander tight end Zach Ertz. They had to be separated in post game. Now, I haven't seen video yet, but Big Dom, remember that guy from the sideline last year? He separated Ertz and Sirianni and Sirianni has since apologized to Ertz on a zoom call.
Diana Rossini
Jesus, he's got a girl out.
Colin Cowherd
I'm just telling. I know people want to say they great record.
Diana Rossini
He's kind of coming across as a meathead.
Colin Cowherd
Kind of goofy stuff every week. It's something. Now he met with the media today and also said that Jalen Hurts is still in concussion protocol and it's starting to sound like he will not start. They called up Ian Book from the practice squad and oh, by the way, Kenny Pickett hurt his ribs against Washington. So the Eagles suddenly walking wounded. I mean, I'm sorry, cratering. This was nine and a half. It's down to six and a half.
Diana Rossini
Yeah, this Sirianni stuff, I, I go back to this. The fact that a coach on the staff stepped in front of the head coach on a 10 game, nine game winning streak to not let him get the Jalen Carter. That tells you amongst the staff, there's a lot of eye rolling with Nick Ceriani. I'm telling you, if they get bounced in the first round, he's out.
Colin Cowherd
I don't. If they get smashed in the second round, I would not be shocked if.
Diana Rossini
He gets, I mean, what does it tell you that a not even a coordinator, a position coach on the team stepped in front of him, said go back to the sideline a position coach.
Colin Cowherd
And why Are you taking shots at Zach Ertz like he was beloved in Philly? And a coach separated from someone's tight end on the opposing team, that's really bad. It's just not a good look for the franchise. I don't know, I kind of. With you, I, I don't know that Sirianni is coaching there next year. And I do believe because of this situation, guys like Vrabel and Ben Johnson.
Diana Rossini
They'Re going to hold off.
Colin Cowherd
You don't want to go take like the Saints or the Jets. Not with the. The Eagles job potentially lurking out there. Right. This one's easily the best job on the market. Way better than the Bears. No, easily.
Diana Rossini
This is the one I think Belichick would go for.
Colin Cowherd
Well, would. But he's now at North Carolina.
Diana Rossini
Well, he can leave though. Remember, he is allowed to leave with a tiny buyout this July. He's allowed that. That was the crazy little addendum in the contract. And I, And I'm arguing that anybody that has that addendum fought for it with his attorneys. I'm sorry, but if the Philadelphia Eagles job came open or North Carolina. By the way, his son is already there as the defensive coordinator. Huh.
Colin Cowherd
So Eagles lose the NFC championship to the.
Diana Rossini
That's different.
Colin Cowherd
So you're keeping them NFC champions.
Diana Rossini
Yeah, I would. If you lose to Detroit in overtime, I can live with that. If you got, if you got upset in the first two rounds. I think he's in trouble. I just go back to that sideline encounter. That is not something doesn't smell right. Position. Coach. Get back to the headset. Coach. What?
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, it's not good. Final story is let's do the Pittsburgh Steelers again because listen, their fan base was really thumping their chest for the first three quarters of the season, yet they've hit a bit of a tough stretch here. The Steelers have clinched a playoff spot, but they do not need lead the AFC north anymore.
Diana Rossini
They've lost three in a row.
Colin Cowherd
Mike Tomlin not happy about the situation. You can look at it from a lot of angles. The bottom line is this is junior.
Greg Cosell
Varsity is not good enough.
Colin Cowherd
We got to own that. But we also got to look at what it is we need to do different.
Diana Rossini
Yeah, I think structurally they're too solid, they're too well run foundationally to ever be awful. But this is about a 10 year run where we don't really take them seriously as a Super bowl team. I mean, Buffalo, Kansas City and Baltimore have leapfrogged. Congrats on beating Baltimore. A lot. Those teams have leapfrogged them. I think Harbaughn Herbert have now officially this year leapfrog them. Peyton, Bo Nix are not going backwards. So I mean to me, if you told me next year, five best teams in the afc, Kansas City, Baltimore, Buffalo, boom. I think once Harbaugh and Herbert can get more offensive weapons, therefore, and again, I think Bo Nick's year to Sean Payton, I think they're ahead of him.
Colin Cowherd
Interesting.
Diana Rossini
And I think, I'll tell you this. If Indianapolis goes hard and land Sam Darnold, I'd put them because I like the Colts roster.
Colin Cowherd
Oh yeah.
Diana Rossini
I would put them ahead of the Steelers.
Colin Cowherd
So it's, it's weird. The Steelers, I think have invested more in their cap space in defense than any other team in the league or they're certainly top five. But Colin, if you look at these results, the Eagles hammered them. Okay. It was not, that was not a close game. Then they play Baltimore, Baltimore hangs 34 on them. Then they play Kansas City and the Steelers get housed. I'm looking. You step up in class and face the top teams and you, you're not competitive. They've lost all these games by 14 or more. So what are we doing here? Is there upside with this team? What do you do? Do you rethink Russell Wilson now in the off season again? Russell Wilson. Hey, hey.
Diana Rossini
Wonderful.
Colin Cowherd
You, you crushed Cleveland and you did well against the Giants and the jets and the Raiders. If you can't.
Diana Rossini
Let me ask you this, let me ask you this. You don't think Sam Darnold's tasty to the Steelers?
Colin Cowherd
That's a tough division for him outdoors, cold weather.
Diana Rossini
Oh, yeah.
Colin Cowherd
California guy, we saw him flopping New York outdoors.
Diana Rossini
Yeah. Maybe that was the jets and not Darnold. I don't think rain and wind is going to be a deterrent. I'm not sure if I Sam Darnold, I could choose Stichen and Indy or Tomlin in Pittsburgh. I'm taking the offensive coach. I'm a free agent. I can go where I want.
Colin Cowherd
I would take and that division with Indy.
Diana Rossini
No, I think Indy. I think if he doesn't stay in Minnesota, I think Indy is super attractive indoors. Capable gm, excellent offensive coach, number one wide receiver you played with in college. And Michael Pittman, star running back. That's a good roster.
Colin Cowherd
That's a good team. I just, you know, listen, on a selfish note, I took a lot of heat for my off season commentary on the Steelers when I said trade TJ Watt and just start flex. But I wasn't Wrong. I was just early. Right. I mean, I look wrong for nine, 10 weeks. All of a sudden. What are you doing off season for Pittsburgh? Colin, do you bring. We're talking about him as a $40 million a guy last year, last week, weren't we. I don't think you could pay him 40 million. Can you? What do you. Russell, Russell.
Diana Rossini
I'm not paying him 40, 30, 32, 30. I mean he'll again if, if it was a great quarterback class. I think differently. I think Aaron Rodgers could be on the market. Kirk Cousins could be on the market. Sam Darnold could be on the market. I'd go Darnold, Rodgers, Cousins.
Colin Cowherd
And you're. You're a distant third and quarterback in the division with Burrow and Lamar as two of the best in the league. I don't know what's going on with the Browns. I. Yeah, I know. All of a sudden Steelers got a lot of questions in Pittsburgh, shall we say another fun offseason team to deal with.
Diana Rossini
Yeah, but I mean, let's be clear. It's been a decade, eight to 10 years. We don't consider them. I mean, couldn't I argue this was the year for the getting to be good. Harbaugh's first year on a Chargers team in a rebuild. Bo Nick's rookie quarterback. I mean, this was the year. This was the getting good year. Burrows defense is atrocious. Burrow, they're going to make some moves.
Colin Cowherd
And the Broncos are basically paying Russell Wilson's salary this year.
Diana Rossini
So now Denver's going to get some money to play with. Herbert's going to have actual weapons. Like this was the year here to do some damage.
Colin Cowherd
They had a good run, you know, 10 wins. Nothing to scoff at. Eclipse the season win total.
Diana Rossini
You know what? Maybe Pirates will take over the city. Maybe it's no longer a Steeler type.
Colin Cowherd
There's a pirate city.
Diana Rossini
The Penguins. J. Mac with the news. Well, that's the news and thanks for stopping by the herd lie news. No, it's. It's. It's funny about you make predictions and you know, I always say this about kids. The days are long, but the years fly by. That's an old saying with kids in the NFL. The weeks are crazy, but the season's predictable every week. Oh my God. Who did I have in the AFC winning division? Buffalo, Kansas City, Houston Chiefs. Who did I have as what did I have? Harbaugh doing playoffs first year. Who was my surprise team? Denver and Peyton. That was my AFC's prediction. NFC. I had Philadelphia Atlanta Rams and I had both. I had Green Bay beating Detroit, both playoff teams. It's not that hard week to week. The NFL is crazy. Over the course of 17 weeks, you kind of know what you're getting. And with Pittsburgh, eventually we all looked at the end of the remember the schedule. You can put the schedule up if you want. With the Steelers, we did this before the season. We're like, yeah, they play a bunch of dogs, they play a bunch of also rans and they're probably going to win some games. And then they got hot and we're like, wow, they're better. But we all looked at the end of their schedule in the last six, seven games that were like Burrow and Mahomes and Lamar Jackson and Philadelphia and we're all like, that's the season. The final seven games. Well, it's a, it's an F3 good teams can't compete with any of them. That's what's happened live in Los Angeles. The Herd. Is Lavar Arrington here from up on Game and listen, I want to talk to you about something very serious for a minute, all right? Something personal to me and right now, something that should be personal to you as well. I'ma call it out. You need to do the same thing. So it's interesting. There's a rumor out there and the Miami Heat have squashed it this morning. Now when people deny, once a rumor gets out, it gets out from a reason. So Jimmy Butler's going to want to be traded was the story yesterday. Miami Heat Pat Riley came out and said, hey, we don't talk about, we don't talk about rumors, but we're not going to trade him. That doesn't mean anything. You know, people just want to stop, they want to stop the momentum. The Miami Heat want to seize control of this. I imagine Jimmy Butler and his agent probably leaked it and Miami is like putting a foot down because they don't want to lose control of the situation. I think it's a loss for the NBA that he stays in Miami. They're a non title threatening team with a great coach. They're you know, six in the East. The middle and bottom of the east is not very good. I think you'd much rather see him go to the warriors and give them a shot to win a championship. Or the Lakers, you know, Lakers could use him but I think Golden State's the better fit. Lakers have a lot of issues. They don't have any depth, the warriors do. They don't have enough shooters, the warriors do. Butler's not a classic three point shooter. He's a playmaker and a great number two scoring option. I think he's a great fit with the Warriors. You probably have to give up Wiggins and Kaminga, which I'd be willing to do. Kaminga. I keep waiting for the explosion. It's not happening. And you know Wiggins is a good player but he needs to be your four. If you're a championship team. You're not beating Boston with Andrew Wiggins being your Second scoring option, maybe your third, but mostly your fourth, Jimmy Butler. You can get to the finals with Jimmy Butler as your number two scoring option. With Draymond and with Steph and with Pods and with Buddy Heald and Steve Curry your coach, they got a nice bench. Jackson, that works for me. I think staying in Miami doesn't do the league any favors, but you know, Pat Riley doesn't care about that. I thought the NBA had a very good day yesterday. It's funny, J. Mac during the break said, what would you make of LeBron playing with Steph? And I. The reason I don't love it is because guys like Kevin Durant can fit anywhere. You can put Kevin Durant on every team in the league and he fits. You can give him the ball in the three seconds to go on the shot clock. It doesn't matter. You can put him anywhere. If LeBron is on your team, he has to be the ecosystem of the offense. And the warriors have their offense. LeBron's not going to play off ball. He's not going to do that. LeBron has to control things. That's why he loves Austin Rivers. Why does LeBron like him? Because he's not a threat and he can take a break. And Austin's your playmaker. I don't think he works with Steph Curry. I think Steph's the offense. If you look at the plus minus of the warriors, they're like plus one, 16 when Steph's on the floor, minus 62 when he's not. He's the offense, he's the ecosystem. And so I don't think LeBron's a great fit. Now, Jimmy Butler doesn't need the ball in his hands. He can play off ball. He's an excellent defender. In a world where you need wing defenders, he can do that. He is tough. He's great in the playoffs, he's dependable. He's a grown up. So I think Jimmy Butler's a great fit with the Warriors. I don't think LeBron is. And I think the Lakers have a million problems. They're not deep enough. I mean, Golden State has depth, the Lakers don't. Golden State has three point shooters, the Lakers don't. Steph's four or five year, four years younger than LeBron. I think Steph can get you to the Finals. I don't think LeBron can. He's had a nice run after some time off, but I don't think he can. So that's where I am. Well, do you have any thoughts on that? Whole trade scenario. I wish he would move just because it's good for the league.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. I mean, it feels like his time is. It's run its course in Miami for Jimmy Butler. But on the LeBron Curry thing, just watching them together at the Olympics, and I know that's a totally different sport, Olympic basketball, than the NBA, just the energy and I mean, the historic greatness these guys have been battling. They've been the face of the league for at least the last 15 years. Going head to head. 10 to 15 years.
Diana Rossini
Well, that's. You would prefer that you didn't have to depend on them to get a rating on Christmas, but Hollywood would prefer that Tom Cruise wasn't the last bankable star to open theaters.
Colin Cowherd
But some of these other guys, they're not quite ready yet.
Diana Rossini
Right.
Colin Cowherd
Some of these guys aren't ready to ascend to face, or they don't want.
Diana Rossini
To be the face or they don't.
Colin Cowherd
Jokic, I don't think wants it. I don't think he'd push back on that at all. I think the NBA had a great day yesterday. That next game. Listen, man, Mikhail bridges going for 40 plus the shot making. Like, I know you like to say there too many threes, but these guys are making so many impossible shots. It is quality basketball.
J. Mac
Yeah.
Diana Rossini
I don't have a problem with male Bridges taking threes that I don't have a problem with. I have a problem with Wemby going 10 for 10 close to the basket and then like 4 for 20 away from the basket. Well, what. What's better to watch? What's. You know, again, math makes bad entertainment a prime example in baseball. Well, the analytics say that's why a lot of these big companies, like the one I work with and espn, I don't think ESPN is doing a big baseball deal. Why? Because math makes bad television. And so analytics are fine. But remember, these TV networks and streamers now are paying 30 to 35% of your bills. Attendance is paying 30 to 35% of the bills, and there's merchandising and, you know, parking, whatever. But my point is, If I'm paying 35% of the bills, I get a say. And these leagues and these companies and these big broadcast centers and streamers are saying, speed the game of baseball up. Speed it up. And they did, and it delivered. And Fox broke with. And I guarantee you, now the NBA's got NBC, Amazon, and ESPN. ESPN will be fine. They're the incumbent. But NBC's got to build a whole new basketball division. And Amazon's got to build a whole new basketball division. And you know what they're going to say? We're paying about 40% of the revenue. Make the game less homogenous.
Colin Cowherd
Listen, I know it's. You run this show for a long time. Why don't you try to get Adam Silver on and ask him? I guarantee you he will have some interesting pushback on. We don't need to move.
Diana Rossini
I think Adam Silver knows it's an issue. I think he's too smart to be dumb on this issue. I think he knows he's got an issue when Kevin Durant's admitting it, when LeBron's admitting it, when Joe Missoula. They're all admitting it. NBA had a good day. I'll still watch the playoffs. I'm just saying. I said this for baseball. I moved off baseball. I moved back into it last year. I thought it was great. I thought the playoffs were a month of unbelievable television.
Colin Cowherd
I. I do agree. You know, for some people, the threes aren't for them. But once NFL ends.
Diana Rossini
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
And it's NBA and college basketball and hockey. What are you gonna. You're not gonna watch NBA. Of course you are.
Diana Rossini
You know what I'm gonna watch? Well, Caitlin Clark in June. That'll get.
Colin Cowherd
You're gonna watch WNBA regular season. Caitlin Clark.
Diana Rossini
I did last year.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Caitlin Clark. You didn't watch the other teams?
Diana Rossini
Well, I mean, there's.
Colin Cowherd
The NBA is going to be fine.
Diana Rossini
People watch Stephen LeBron that are not watching the other teams.
Colin Cowherd
Well, the other teams. Some of these guys got to get their act together, like your boy Anthony Edwards. And Luca's got to get healthy. Lucas missed a bunch of games down.
Diana Rossini
Hey, so I. I got to be fair here. Greg, I wanted to say Brock Purdy, Greg Cosell. I don't see it. But Greg Cosell broke down the struggles of Brock Purdy about an hour and a half ago.
J. Mac
You have to separate the money from the conversation because, look, everybody knows what Brock Purdy is. Brock Purdy is not a big guy. He doesn't have a great arm. So what. What has to happen for Brock Purdy to be a really good player? He has to have a good O line, which, by the way, has not been good this year. The depth of the pocket, which is controlled by the interior of the O line, has not been very good. So he's been squeezed a lot. And because he doesn't have a big arm, he needs space to throw the ball. Right now, Purdy does not have much around him, so his game is going to look like it lacks consistency at times on a week to week basis.
Diana Rossini
But one of the issues is that like Joe Burrow is unbelievably productive with a battle line and Justin Herbert's winning games for years and and highly productive. Let's talk about the production of Burrow and Herbert with atrocious offensive lines. Burrow leads the NFL in touchdown passes battle line. Herbert broke rookie records 32nd ranked offensive line. So my thing is I understand if you're better with a grado line but Burrow is a hot knife through butter with a battle line. Offensively you want to be paid like those guys. I, I can't see this huge drop off and, and, and again Justin Herbert, 32nd ranked offensive line, first year out of Oregon. He set the records. You want to be paid like him, you got to perform like him. Now Greg Cosell also discussed a quarterback that America bailed on. But there was a hard working Ernest sportscaster that never lost faith. Here's Greg Cosell on one Sam Darnold.
J. Mac
He's much more efficient and much more effective when he moves within the pocket. I'm not talking about running out of the pocket. I'm talking about moving within the pocket as we see on this touchdown last week that won the game to Jefferson. The other thing is sort of a corollary point to that. That's his ability to stay in the pocket and make late in the down throws when the pocket is squeezed and there's bodies around him. That was something he did not do well early in his career. He made a lot of bad reads and bad throws when he tried to do that. He's gotten so much better at that. So there are two areas of pocket play that are absolutely critical to being a higher level pocket quarterback that he's improved significantly at.
Diana Rossini
So the question is do they keep him or let him go? The Colts I believe will make a run at him. I think the Tennessee Titans would make a run at him. Minnesota may keep him. I think he has a real market. I will also say I think Aaron Rodgers has a market too. It is smaller than Sam Darnold and J. Mac will roll his eyes. I think Kirk Cousins probably has a one team market. I think Aaron may have a two team market. I think Darnold's probably got a four team market and I think Shadour Sanders and Cam Ward and Jalen Milroe also all have a couple teams that are interested. It's not a huge market. But I will say this. The idea that Aaron Rodgers has no market I don't buy last eight weeks Aaron Rodgers played word of good football. He's moving well. He was the issues. He was the issue early for the jets. In my opinion. He's not the issue now. He's moved past that. It's a coaching issue. It's an instability issue. It's Garrett Wilson complaining issue. That's what it is. J Mac, we mowed through this thing today. That was good.
Colin Cowherd
Super fast show. Are we doing this again tomorrow?
Diana Rossini
Yeah. Yeah. A blazing five tomorrow. I feel very good. Ok. Do you think. Do you think Steeler fans will reach out to both of us and apologize?
Colin Cowherd
I'm going to go with no. By the way, I didn't even need the terrible towel yesterday. There's nothing to waive it for. Steelers were totally off.
Diana Rossini
I was shocked. No. Chris Jones and the Chiefs got excellent pressure on Russell Wilson without their star lineman.
Colin Cowherd
Did it not look like late careers? Seattle for Russell Wilson?
Diana Rossini
It looked worse. It looked worse. It was worse. It was bad.
Colin Cowherd
That end zone interception to. I mean he just didn't read the safety.
Diana Rossini
Well, you're also asking Russell to play a lot of games in a short time time and that's tough. Mahomes can do it. He's in his prime. But how about the emergence of Travis Kelsey in the last couple games? Hey, come on. He's bringing it.
Colin Cowherd
Are they really going to go to the super bowl again? Colin oh, gosh. I guess I'm fine with it if Taylor Swift's there, but yeah, Detroit, Buffalo would be so much better indoors. Oh my. Detroit, Buffalo, Detroit, Buffalo, Detroit, Baltimore. Those games will be way more exciting.
Diana Rossini
Don't always get what you want.
Greg Cosell

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Hour 3 featuring Dianna Rossini
Release Date: December 26, 2024
Host/Author: iHeartPodcasts and The Volume
In Hour 3 of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, host Colin Cowherd engages in an in-depth discussion with guest Diana Rossini, a senior insider from The Athletic, and Greg Cosell, a film analyst who breaks down game strategies. The episode delves into several pressing topics within the NFL, including coaching changes, player performances, team dynamics, and emerging rumors. Below is a comprehensive summary of the key discussions, insights, and conclusions from the episode.
Timestamp: [02:00 – 04:42]
The conversation kicks off with rumors surrounding legendary coach Pete Carroll potentially returning to the NFL. Colin Cowherd highlights the ongoing speculations among NFL insiders about Carroll's interest in taking up another head coaching position.
Diana Rossini notes that despite Pete Carroll not being the best candidate compared to others like Mike Vrabel, his reputation as a culture builder with relentless energy makes his return plausible.
Greg Cosell supports the notion, emphasizing Carroll's desire to re-enter coaching and his ability to build and lead a franchise effectively.
Timestamp: [04:42 – 07:35]
The discussion transitions to the Dallas Cowboys' coaching situation, focusing on Mike McCarthy's potential return despite recent team performance issues.
Greg Cosell concurs, highlighting Jerry Jones' loyalty to his coaching staff and the team's desire to see how the current season unfolds before making any changes.
Colin underscores the importance of McCarthy’s proven track record with the Cowboys, suggesting that instability might arise only if performance continues to decline.
Timestamp: [07:35 – 10:08]
A significant portion of the episode examines Aaron Rodgers' future with the New York Jets amidst rumors of strained relationships with team ownership.
Greg Cosell discusses the mixed signals from Rodgers and the Jets, indicating a possible end to their partnership if underlying issues aren't resolved.
Rossini expresses confidence in Rodgers' performance, arguing that the coaching environment rather than the player is the primary issue.
Timestamp: [10:08 – 13:22]
The episode delves into Gerard Mayo's tenure as the head coach of the New England Patriots, questioning whether his approach aligns with the franchise's winning culture.
Greg Cosell critiques Mayo’s implementation, suggesting that the team isn't reflecting the strategic prowess expected from a former Patriots assistant.
Rossini debates the fans' patience, indicating that the Patriots' management might soon reconsider Mayo's position if performance doesn't improve.
Timestamp: [13:22 – 24:40]
A heated discussion centers around the Philadelphia Eagles' recent on-field altercation between head coach Nick Sirianni and former player Zach Ertz, raising concerns about the team's internal dynamics.
Greg Cosell emphasizes that such incidents reflect deeper issues within the coaching staff, potentially jeopardizing Sirianni's future with the team.
Rossini expresses skepticism about Sirianni’s longevity, particularly if the team underperforms in the upcoming playoffs.
The panel discusses the potential for high-profile coaches like Mike Vrabel and Ben Johnson to fill any impending vacancies, pointing out that the Eagles could become a prime candidate for such hires.
Timestamp: [24:16 – 29:06]
The Steelers’ recent performance downturn is analyzed, with particular attention to the team's reliance on veteran QB Russell Wilson and defensive investments.
Greg Cosell comments on the defense's shortcomings despite substantial financial investments, questioning the viability of recent strategic decisions.
Rossini highlights the Steelers' historical stability but notes that recent losses have sparked doubts about Coach Mike Tomlin's future.
The discussion includes speculation on potential quarterback changes, including Sam Darnold's suitability for the division and the attractiveness of the Indianapolis Colts as an option.
Timestamp: [19:49 – 22:29]
The hosts debate the ongoing MVP contention between Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, analyzing their statistical performances and team contributions.
Rossini remains impartial, placing Saquon Barkley in the third position and recognizing both quarterbacks' spectacular performances without strong favoritism.
Colin provides betting odds, favoring Josh Allen slightly over Lamar Jackson, though maintaining that both are strong MVP candidates.
Timestamp: [35:42 – 42:48]
Towards the end of the episode, the conversation shifts to the NBA, focusing on rumors about Jimmy Butler potentially being traded from the Miami Heat to powerhouse teams like the Golden State Warriors.
The hosts debate the implications of such a trade, discussing Butler's fit with the Warriors compared to LeBron James' compatibility with the same team.
Colin suggests that while Butler’s trade might benefit the league by strengthening other teams, it remains speculative as the Heat management, led by Pat Riley, stands firm against the rumors.
Rossini continues to analyze the strategic advantages Butler would bring to the Warriors, emphasizing his defensive prowess and playmaking abilities.
Timestamp: [43:05 – 44:55]
The episode touches upon Brock Purdy's development as a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, analyzing his performance improvements and potential market value.
Rossini counters by highlighting Purdy’s ability to excel despite a mediocre offensive line, comparing his efficiency to other successful quarterbacks like Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert.
The hosts debate whether the Colts or Titans might pursue Purdy, noting his growing market attractiveness due to his newfound consistency.
Timestamp: [25:00 – 29:06]
The episode wraps up with broader observations about the NFL season, including team dynamics, playoff prospects, and the unpredictability of game outcomes.
Colin emphasizes the importance of timing in evaluating teams like the Steelers, pointing out that their late-season schedule against top teams has exposed their weaknesses.
Rossini concludes by reflecting on the Steelers' historical performance and the necessity for strategic changes to remain competitive in the future.
