You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Peter Schrager was on earlier and all this stuff is very fluid. You know, the Ben Johnson is a really attractive name because offensive coaches, we can all see, they're clever defensive coaches. Let's be honest, you don't see the innovations. Sometimes the broadcaster will talk about it, but when Ben Johnson's doing a hook and lateral or he's doing a trick play, you can see it. Everybody's like that guy. That guy's got a different playbook. He whoa. Aaron Glenn, to me is doing more with less as the Lions defensive coordinator. He's had an amazing year. But defensive coaches, and I'm guilty of this, are not in favor. But I'm not Opposed to Aaron Glenn, you know, getting the jets job, to me, I'd be okay with it. But. But Schrager mentioned that Ben Johnson. Because of the Caleb Williams growth concern. Ben Johnson and the Bears. Keep your eye on it.
Jason McIntyre
Ben Johnson, from my sources, is interested in the job. That's all I would need to hear. If I'm the. If I'm the Chicago Bears, go get Caleb Williams, the hottest offensive coordinator in football the last three years. And if Ben Johnson's interesting, I'll tell you, Ben Johnson is not interested in every job. Ben Johnson's not taking an interview with the Jets. Caleb Williams is very attractive to Ben Johnson. Go get that interview and don't have you interview him. This is the rare guy where you go in there and you say, Ben Johnson, let us interview you, but let us pitch ourselves to you. And why, after you didn't entertain Carolina two years ago when that job most likely was his and you didn't entertain Washington last year, let us tell you why you should take this job. Because I think there's an arrogance with some of these franchises, I'm not saying the Bears are one of them, where they think that these coaches need to spill over and tell them why they need to be the next head coach.
Drew Brees
This is a rare instance.
Jason McIntyre
Ben Johnson's that dude.
Colin Cowherd
Go and tell him that you are.
Jason McIntyre
Going to be that guy. You're going to be that team and you're going to support him.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Now it. It should be duly noted that what he's working with in Detroit. Ben Johnson's got guys like Panay Sew, Goff, Amaron St. Brown, two great backs, an elite center. He's got like seven guys that feel like they could get hall of Fame votes. Okay, you're not getting that in Chicago. Although I like DJ Moore a lot. Roma Dunze, you don't have the same level of personnel. I like Cole Comet, but it is when you have elite personnel. I mean, I've said this with Kyle Shanahan losing record in San Francisco without Christian McCaffrey, it's a players league. Belichick, not the same coach without Brady. Andy Reed's one of the few has been getting to Super Bowls and getting the conference championships with middling quarterbacks and a variety of talent levels. Here's JMAC with the news.
Drew Brees
No, no, no.
Colin Cowherd
Turn on the news.
Drew Brees
This is the Herdline news.
Jason McIntyre
All right, let's open with the first playoff game Saturday and the Chargers, the vibes, they've been great since Jim Harbaugh took over for the Chargers. They are back in the playoffs. Justin Herbert knows things have been different for him, and he gave an interesting answer when asked about the moment he knew Harbaugh was different.
Drew Brees
I think when he talked about remembering.
Colin Cowherd
The day that he was born was probably the first day that he kind of told us the whole story and how he remembered looking out the window. And I think it was a cold, snowy day. And I really hope he does remember that.
Drew Brees
That'd be pretty cool.
Colin Cowherd
I think my earliest memory is five years old. So Harbaugh's. He's working on a different plane than the rest of us. God, I like the Chargers. I really do.
Jason McIntyre
Well, this has come off the three, so some money on Houston. You expected that. Home dogs historically in the playoff. I don't know. Listen, you and I don't. Well, I don't bet trends, but there's a lot of wild card trends. Home underdogs historically have done well in this spot.
Colin Cowherd
I'm staying away from this game. I'm staying away from both LA teams.
Jason McIntyre
Why?
Colin Cowherd
I don't have this certainty that you have that the Vikings are in big trouble against the Rams. And even though I think the Chargers are going to win, I don't want to be nervous watching this game. I, I, I, I, I am. I just want to watch the game and enjoy. I don't want to ruin my weekend.
Jason McIntyre
Two for the money with Matthew McConaughey, the gambling movie. He's just on such a heater and then he just comes in on like a Monday and picks every game on the board and they're like, you're picking on Mondays. That's weirdly how I felt about this week. I feel that I don't see what you're seeing in Vikings and I don't see it in the Houston Texans.
Colin Cowherd
I just, no, I think the Chargers are going to win and I think the Vikings are going to win.
Jason McIntyre
So what are you afraid of? You got Jim Harbaugh and Herbert. Better quarterback, better coach. Isn't that how you bet? Mostly right.
Colin Cowherd
It's a road game.
Drew Brees
Nervous.
Jason McIntyre
It is, yeah.
Colin Cowherd
That's.
Jason McIntyre
Houston's such a tough place to play Saturday afternoon. Next up, Seattle Seahawks. Colin, they missed the playoffs. They, you know, they led the division briefly there this season. Head coach Mike McDonald's first year, mild success, but he's evaluating things and he knows there is one player he wants back. Take a listen.
Colin Cowherd
I want Gino to be here. I think he's a heck of a player. He. I'm gonna do like, what's the first thing always comes Back for, like, for what's best for the team. I feel like Geno's the best for the team right now, and so I'll be involved with it. Ultimately, it's not my decision. It's a Seahawks decision, so. But Gino knows how we feel about him, and we love him as our starting quarterback, for sure. All right.
Jason McIntyre
Love McDonald. This feels like his first misstep, right? Could have been naming the OC who he fired.
Colin Cowherd
Well, I don't know. I guess he fire the OC one year, fired him.
Jason McIntyre
But it's weird that they're like, hey, Gino, that's our guy. The OC didn't work out.
Colin Cowherd
Don't love it. But, you know, what do I know? I mean, listen, he's in the building every day and he likes him.
Jason McIntyre
You're a Pacific Northwest guy.
Colin Cowherd
I know. Believe me. I get texts every Sunday from my friends.
Jason McIntyre
And where are they on Gino?
Colin Cowherd
They are hoping they make moves at quarterback. Kind of. Fielders are ceiling.
Jason McIntyre
It's just a rough market for QBs. There's not a lot in the draft.
Colin Cowherd
Not a great year. That's why I keep saying, you guys are all bailing on Aaron Rodgers. Be careful. He may end up being the second best option out there.
Jason McIntyre
Give me the four wins again without Aaron Rodgers.
Colin Cowherd
Our final story.
Jason McIntyre
Colin, you've said several times now you think Brian Flores would be a good option for teams that need a head coach. Well, one of the guys who played for him thinks he may have a rough time finding references for his next job.
Colin Cowherd
Flores has been a really hot name, and I think the further removed we get from his tenure in Miami, the more people kind of forget about how that ended and the better his name becomes. I think in the interviews, he'll be likable, he'll be relatable. But when people say, okay, give me somebody from Miami that coached under you as a reference so we can talk to them, I think he burned a lot of bridges there. I think he alienated himself from the entire staff. I think by the end of his time there, he became a dictator. He ruined a lot of those relationships that he built up through the NFL. And his ego grew so big that there wasn't any room for anyone else. That's pretty rough. That's not good.
Jason McIntyre
Now, a lot of these guys who call games, they don't have takes, right? You know, you're meeting with these teams, players and coaches. That's a strong take.
Colin Cowherd
That's a great take. When you have access as a player, that's What I'm looking for, just be honest.
Jason McIntyre
Called him a dictator.
Colin Cowherd
Well, he, he rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. I mean, Tua is a nice kid. Tua came out, was highly critical of him. And two is a wonderful kid by all accounts. He's a nice kid. He's not real harsh. He came out and was very harsh against Brian Flores, which makes you wonder if Ryan Fitzpatrick is not nailing it.
Jason McIntyre
So more likely to return to Minnesota next year, Brian Flores or Sam Darnold?
Colin Cowherd
If Sam plays well Monday, they'll franchise tag him. If he beats the Rams, gonna be hard to let him go. I don't care. It'd be hard to let a guy walk out the door off an MVP level season. To me.
Jason McIntyre
Remember Daniel Jones, went into Minnesota, won a playoff game and they gave him 40 million a year.
Colin Cowherd
Well, we didn't feel the same way. Sam's been somebody athletic, a little reckless, but athletic, coachable playmaker. I feel different about Sam than Dan.
Jason McIntyre
I like Flores back in Minnesota and I think they're going to be really, I don't want to say super bowl contenders, but remember, if they go off Darnold and McCarthy's your quarterback. He ain't expensive. No, I, I like Minnesota going forward. If they keep Flores, he's very good.
Colin Cowherd
Good stuff. J. Mac with the news.
Drew Brees
Well, that's the news.
Jason McIntyre
And thanks for stopping by the Herd line.
Colin Cowherd
He is eligible for the hall of fame in 2026 and it just turned 2025, so he won't have much, much of a weight. 13 time Pro Bowler, one of the top 10 quarterbacks I've ever seen. Drew Brees joining us live like Bo Nix and Sean Payton. I think we both thought this is going to work if you got to land somewhere. If you're Bo Nix, this is it. So here they are going into a playoff game. So I want you to go back to your first year with Sean. So Sean's intense. I can't even imagine what playoff Sean is like. Is it different? Is playoff week with Sean Drew and you had a lot of them. Is he a little different?
Drew Brees
You know, I wouldn't say that he's different, but he's definitely going to have something up his sleeve, you know. And I would say, look, he's still relatively new in his tenure there. Obviously, you know, only a second year in Denver, but really I would say this year based on new quarterback and kind of like the first year in the system where everybody's really kind of, you know, starting to embrace it now and moving forward. Like, he. He's going to look at this as, like there's going to be something special this week or something unique this week that he kind of throws into the preparation that. That makes the guys feel like this is a little something different.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Drew Brees
And the fact that, look, you're going on the road and playing, you know, arguably one of the favorites, you know, and. And a guy in Josh Allen and an environment like, you know, Bill's mafia, where, like, he's going to build that up a little bit, like playing in that atmosphere in that stadium with the weather conditions, you know, like, all that stuff he's going to have. He's going to be talking about, you know, yeah, it's on turf, but it's slick, you know, make sure you got the right cleats. And, you know, he's going to. He's going to have something about, like, man, we're going to, like, be throwing snowballs, you know, into the stands at the fan. Like, he's going to build it up to where it's. Yes, it's. It's. It's different, but, man, it's going to be fun. Right. There's going to be the keys to victory. There's going to be the lot, you know, locked in and focused, but at the same time, like, there's going to be something different and fun about this week.
Colin Cowherd
So Jaden Daniels, on the road, first playoff game. And I think I've talked to you for. Through the years. Playoffs are different. Peyton told me this. I think you've told me this. They're different. There's like preseason speed, regular season speed, division rival speed, playoff speed. So, Jaden Daniels, first playoff game on the road. Vidavia. You tell me. Take me to your first playoff game. Just the nerves you dealt with, the anxiety, the prep.
Drew Brees
Yeah. You know, it's. I would equate it to, like, similar to when you watch the super bowl, like, it always feels in the beginning of the super bowl, like everybody's on eggshells.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Drew Brees
Like, the game is just slower. Everyone's trying to feel it out, you know, and then all of a sudden, second quarter, third quarter, it feels like all of a sudden now there's this explosion. Everyone starts playing a little bit more loose, a bit more confident. Obviously, the more experienced teams, you know, maybe it doesn't affect them as much. Like, it's easy to sit here and say, hey, these young quarterbacks, man, it's the playoffs and everybody's going to build it up and, you know, more pressure and this and that. In some cases. Young guys step into these things and it's like they don't know any better, right? Like, this is the game that they've played their whole life. And like, a guy like Jaden Daniels, to me, comes across as somebody especially just watching the way that he's progressed and especially played down the stretch, like, this dude plays loose. This guy looks like he's having fun. Like, he's just playing ball in the backyard. I don't think he really knows any better. And he's just. He's just having fun. And it looks like the team is feeding off of that as well. And look, I've always loved Dan Quinn, and Dan Quinn has a tremendous track record. And these guys, man, he has them prepared and playing hard, playing loose, like, playing confident. So, like, I see a commander's team of any team that is going to just come into this thing like, hey, man, we got nothing to lose. Like, let's turn it loose. Right? Like, we're a wild card, man. Nobody expects us to do anything. We've flown under the radar the whole season, you know. Yeah, we've got this young quarterback that now all of a sudden starting to get some notoriety. But it's like, man, we. This doesn't phase us. This is not too big for us.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. So Buffalo, Baltimore and Philadelphia are considered pretty heavy favorites. And they're at home. They're at home. Go back to your career. You were a home favorite in the playoffs, and a couple of times a big favorite. Is there sort of a weird pressure knowing we got the. Probably got the better coach? You're a real great player. We're at home. We should win this game. But in the back of your head, are you thinking, okay, it's the playoffs. Crazy stuff happens. What is it like to be a big playoff favorite? Because there's usually about one a weekend in the NFL.
Drew Brees
You know, I'll be honest, I never paid attention or was aware of the line in a playoff game except for one time, and that was when we played the super bowl against the Colts. To start that week, we were a seven and a half point dog. And I remember Sean Payton made the point early in the week of preparation. Like, you're a seven and a half point dog. But very few times do I go into a game or a scenario where I truly feel like, like, with that line, we are the better team.
Colin Cowherd
Wow.
Drew Brees
Watch how this line changes from Monday to Sunday. Watch how this line changed from Monday to game. And sure enough, like, every day, he would put it up there and we dropped a six and a half. We dropped a five and a half. We dropped a four and a half. I don't even know what it was by the time game rolled around. But bottom line, it was the world feels like you are the better bet. Right?
Colin Cowherd
Right.
Drew Brees
They are betting on you. And so this line is beginning to change. Right? So it was supposed it was meant to be a confidence builder for us as a team, but like, that was the only time I ever paid attention to it otherwise, man. Like, I was locked in, focused on my job. Like, I don't care who we're playing. It's a faceless opponent. Like, I'm studying the opponent. We're going to go kick their butt. I'm trying to score 40 points. I'm trying to complete every pass. I'm trying to score on every drive. I'm trying like, like it didn't matter, you know, the intent was still the same regardless of what the line was.
Colin Cowherd
Sometimes I will watch sporting events and I'll get nervous for a player. I know the player. I like the player. Sam Darnold's one of those. If he'd have played great against Detroit, I wouldn't feel this way. And I didn't think it was a very winnable game. Biggest game in Detroit in 50 years. I'm like, this is a tough game for Minnesota. So he goes there. He didn't play well. Now I'm thinking, okay, Sammy, you're going to a playoff game. It's your first playoff game. I'm really hoping he plays well. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd, weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the iHeartRadio app. Whether you're ordering wings for the game, whipping up a seven layer dip, or ordering pizza, there's something about football that makes me want to eat. Colin Cowherd
You didn't have many bad games, but was there ever a moment for you, Drew, that you didn't love your performance one week and the next week was a playoff game or a big game. How do you forget it? And again, you didn't have many of those. But how do you forget a performance you're not happy with six, seven days earlier?
Drew Brees
I'll be honest, those were typically the games where I played my best, was coming off of maybe a one or two game stretch where I just felt like I hadn't played my best or, you know, there was a lot more to be had, you know, out of the, out of the game, you know. So just the way that I then approached that next week of preparation, I would really lock in on the process because if you focus on the process, the result will take care of itself. So it became just this laser focus on each day, my routine, my habits, getting my work done and knowing that that will equate to a great performance on Sunday, regardless of what happened the weeks before. Like, just focusing on the process and knowing the result will take care of itself. And so, like, call it a little bit, just like a heightened level of urgency and of focus, not pressure, just urgency and maybe getting back to just some of the basics, you know. So, like, look, I think this is a pivotal game for Sam Donald. He's played a phenomenal regular season. Phenomenal. Especially all that he's, you know, gone through to get to this point and then the opportunity that he had this season to making the most of it. But, you know, you're remembered for what you do in the playoffs and it's all, all that regular season did was get you to this moment so that you would have this opportunity. Look, I was, I actually went to the game, I took my sons to the to the Detroit game. We were sitting literally front row. I watched. I watched every step. They had tons of opportunities. They were down inside the 10 yard line four times. They could have been up 14, 17 points at halftime. They were terrible in the red zone. A lot of things I saw, I would have done differently. But you take that performance and you turn that into one of two things. Either you let that drag you down moving forward, or that has created a heightened level of urgency and focus and intensity to attention to the process this week so that you go out and play lights out.
Colin Cowherd
Finally, I want to circle back to Sean Payton, because you have. When I think of Sean, I think of you. When I think of you, I think of Sean and like reading Mahomes or Brady and Belichick. It's just legendary legacy stuff. Not all coaches age well. Sean has aged well. He is blunt. He put it out there. There's just something. When I sat when he was here at Fox, I'd go to dinner with him and he's so intense. And if I had to guess why, he's aged well. He just loves it so much. That light has never dimmed. But why do you think that he remains so good all these years after he started?
Drew Brees
Yeah. So a couple things. Number one, Ben, you're so much of a product of your mentors and who you've had a chance to be around. And, you know, Sean would attest to this, but just from being around him and looking at his influences, like Bill Parcell's, Jon Gruden. Yeah, like there. There was so much of an influence from those guys in the way that Sean would teach, coach, communicate, and it was like the best of, like the best of those guys. You know, Sean took and kind of made his own, you know, So I feel like there's. There's always that, that he's taken the best of what people have poured into him, and now he's carrying that on to become his coaching style. Look, he's an offensive guy, right? He loves. He loves being ahead of the curve. He loves, like. He's a grinder. Dude's a grinder, man. He puts in a ton of time. Late nights, like, just trying to find those little, like, edges or advantages that he can put in the game plan. They're going to make the difference. And so many times, I can't tell you, like, we'd be getting a Saturday and it was like, you know, he'd say, I went back and watched this and I just came up with this idea and we would massage it a little Bit it would go in the game plan and sure enough, it would be one of the game changing plays in the game, right? Happened so many times. He's an outstanding communicator. Like, just his ability to order the chaos, order the chaos, like block out the noise, like get the team zeroed in on the keys to victory each and every week, despite all of the distractions and all the other stuff that people want to talk about. Like, man, fellas, if we do this, like, we put ourselves in the best, best position to win this game, right? He had a great way of bringing levity and humor to tense situations or as a way to motivate guys, right? Like, I'll never forget we had, we had a safety one time who was, was a ball hawk machine. And he would always make, he would always make the comment to him, hey, you know, defense, when so and so gets this interception, we're going to have to block everybody to get him in the end zone to get him a pick six, right? So make sure that when you, like, we get this interception, you got to go find a block because otherwise there's no way this guy's going to make like. So it was a, it was like a subtle jab, but then sure enough, like, it just, you know, created a little extra motivation for the defense. So like, little stuff like that where he would find ways to just kind of like, you know, dig into a little bit and everybody's laughing, everybody's having a good time and you kind of walk away and you're like, was he just making fun of me? You know, but at the end of the day, like, that would create a little bit of an edge and a chip on your shoulder. Like, man, you got something to prove. Like, I was always feeling like I had something to prove to Sean Payton, and maybe it was just proving him right because he believed in me when a lot of people did.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Drew Brees
But he's, that's why he's aged well, because he can identify with players, man, he makes it fun. When it's time to work, it's time to work. When it's time to play, man, we're gonna have a good time. And he's taken the best of those who have poured into him, and now he's just carrying on that legacy.
Colin Cowherd
You've been so good today. I'd be remiss if I didn't ask you this. I want you to listen to them. I love Lamar Jackson. He cares so damn much. He gets so mad when he struggles. I love guys like that. I want to Play a Lamar Jackson bite. And I have a question out of it. Let's play this real quick about why he struggled in the playoffs. Yeah, I'd just be too excited, that's all. You know, too antsy. Like I'm seeing things before happening, like, oh, I gotta calm myself down. But just being more experienced, I've. I found a way to balance it out. Okay. When he says that, I get. I get all juiced up. I never think of you because you were such an accuracy machine. I don't ever remember. I remember Anxious Brady. I definitely remember Anxious Manning. I never remember. Yeah, yeah. Drew looks a little frenetic. Don't remember it. Did you ever get nervous?
Drew Brees
Did I give you. I'll give you one example. So super bowl, right? You know, you're going into. It's like, man, just any other game, it's just like any other game. And I think first play we. We hand the ball off for like 5 yard game. Next play, we throw a short pass. It's like third and four and we're gonna, we're gonna run. We. We call just like, you know, all go. We're just gonna run by the corner on third and fourth, thinking he might be sitting at the sticks and we're gonna get a big play. Robert Meacham runs by the corner. Me, he's got like 3 or 4 yard of space on him. And I launched the ball over his head. I mean, launch it over his head 10 yards and I go to the sideline and I'm just sitting there going, dude, calm down. Like my heart was racing. You know, it's the Super Bowl. It's the first drive we had all go called, and I just launched it over this guy's head and he's wide open, you know, and then that's when I was like, hey, man, it's just like any other game, okay? Right? Just. Just play the game.
Colin Cowherd
Just.
Drew Brees
Just focus on, focus on your job. But like that, that would be, you know, look, I get it. You know, I get it. Like you get in some of these moments and it's easy to get amped up, you know, and anxious and feel like, man, I got to go make a play, right? I got to go. No, just execute, man. Just execute the offense, right? And all those opportunities will come.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Now I want to go look up that piece of video. Now that you've told it to me, I'm like, oh, I don't remember drew missing by 10 yards over a receiver. What a pleasure. What a pleasure to have you, buddy. I appreciate you coming on again? Great stories today.
Drew Brees
You too, Colin.
Colin Cowherd
See you there. Drew Brees, that's just a great job. Great stories. That Super Bowl, I remember that super bowl down in Miami. That was Miami, right? That was the Colts and that was the Saints. Because one of the things that jumps out to me is Peyton called for the onside kick to start the second half, which is, as Drew pointed out, like, Sean's going to have a trick this weekend in Buffalo. There's going to be something there. And I think one of the reasons he's aged well and I think Drew pointed on this offensive coaches love the creative process. They love spending off seasons. Andy Reid has, has sent me video of plays he's dreamed up. And they just, they just love to create and be ahead of the curve. And they're like tech guys. Jason McIntyre
Sunday on Fox. After a historic season, Saquon Barkley and the Eagles begin their playoff run against Jordan Love and the packers in an NFL wildcard matchup Sunday at 4 Eastern, 1 Pacific on Fox.
Colin Cowherd
So Tom Pelissaro, a respected reporter earlier today said multiple NFL teams have inquired about whether legendary coach Bill Belichick would consider his move to college football to, you know, would he come out of college football quickly and go back to the NFL? The Raiders Tom Brady spoke recently with his old coach, according to sources. So Belichick was called by Brady. Belichick, obviously, at Carolina. Brady now minority owner of the Raiders. By the way, Diana Rossini, who comes on this show, just reported that Belichick said he has no plans to return to the NFL. She says, I'm told his focus is on recruiting. Today he's in New Jersey. So, you know, some of this, in my opinion, is Bill calling Diana and saying, I'm not going back to the NFL. Could you put it out there? I don't think it helps recruiting. I think everybody in the acc, like Dabo Sweeney and Bill Belichick fighting over a defensive end. I think If I was Dabo Sweeney, I'd say, you think he's going to be a college football coach for 10 years? Dabo Sweeney said, I'll be here in 10 years. He may not be here in 10 months. So I think. I think in college recruiting, people recruit against you as often as often they recruit for themselves. They'll make sure, you know that, yeah, I'm going to be here in 10 years. And let's be honest, if you're going to do well in the acc, you got to beat Clemson. So that's who you're recruiting against. Carolina is recruiting against players in that region that want to go to Clemson. And so I'm sure Belichick knows, you know, Dabo's saying, hey, I've been here 10 years. I'm going to be here another 10 years. They're going to bury me in this football stadium. So he's got a huge legacy advantage, college legacy advantage over Belichick. And Bill wants it out there. I mean, if Bill called me tomorrow and said, you know, Colin, I'm staying in Carolina for two years, I would report that. I am a bit skeptical that he. This is to save recruiting or elevate recruiting. I'm a little skeptical. I could be wrong. I think Bill's a. You know, I don't think he spent a lot of days watching college football. I remember when Urban Meyer went to the pros. Urban Meyer was totally upfront with me. He said, I. I didn't watch Sunday football. Sunday. I was in the film room. I was a college football guy. And when he went there, it wasn't the coaching, it was the sensibility. Urban didn't have, like, an NFL feel. He didn't have NFL contacts. He was a college coach. Bill's the opposite. He's an NFL coach. If you watch their drafting over the last seven years, Bill didn't have a great feel for it.
Jason McIntyre
Let me ask you, Colin, who's. Where does Bill Belichick have a better chance to win this upcoming season, this fall? North Carolina and the ACC or Vegas, where they're drafting sixth and we don't know the quarterback situation. Be real about this. Where does he have a better chance to win this fall?
Colin Cowherd
Carolina.
Jason McIntyre
There you go. Why is he leaving for the Raiders? I know your guy works there, Tesco. And you know, Brady's in the ownership group. I. I don't. If they had a quarterback, okay, maybe I would consider it. I just. I don't see it. Unless they think they can land Shador Sanders somehow. Hey, we got the Package to move up and grab him or Cam Ward. But Carolina, he's got a better chance to win.
Colin Cowherd
You know, there are things that play to his advantage. A large number of recruits now come to you in college football. Yeah, right. Because of the nil. A lot of the top end guys. Now you still want to recruit high school players, but you can have young people on your staff that do a lot of that recruiting. Now Bill's probably out in Jersey today looking at a left tackle, a top. You know, he's, Bill's not going to waste his time on prospects. He's going after four and five star guys that can come in and play. But a lot of this now, I mean, even the, you know, almost every program brings in like 8 to 12 nil guys that can play. Even Texas with their great recruiting, they're bringing in nil guys. I mean, Ohio State goes, gets Caleb Downs, who's the second best player on their team. So even the powerhouses fix their roster and they get really high end transfers. So a lot of it that plays to Bill's advantages. Kids, now come to you. I can't see Bill 10 years ago, you know, shaking the bushes trying to find a, a three star running back. I just don't see that happening. So the, the timing of this and his son's on the staff. His son's done recruiting, you know, in college staffs. USC just hired a guy that's a legendary recruiter. He's a younger guy from Colorado State. He recruits la. Well, Lincoln Riley's not done a good job keeping LA talent around. So you go get a young guy who's known as a great recruiter. So I'm sure Bill could pay for that. But I, I will say this. I would like Belichick to stay. Yeah, it. Carolina. For one year. Because I've always felt there's this sense that college guys can't coach in the pros. Proven wrong with Jimmy Johnson, Pete Carroll and that NFL guys would dominate college. And I don't think they would. Bill was so smart, you know, Bill would just spend more time on the game and college limits you to 20 hours a week.
Jason McIntyre
Remember Harbaugh when he went back from the Niners to Michigan? He had what, one or two good years and then it was kind of lean there for a while and they wanted to run him out of town.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Jason McIntyre
And then he ended up winning the national championship.
Colin Cowherd
It's, it can be very problematic for a pro coach who could coach 70 hours a week. And then you're limited to a very Short. And these kids are going to class, they've got tests. You got to work around the academics and the family time. The idea that, you know, the college is so much easier. College football is a young man's game. Marcus Freeman, I mean, that guy's, that guy has the energy, you know, of a young guy. So Nick Saban, Jay Wright could have kept coaching at an elite level, but I think at one point they're like, there's too many Kirby Smarts out. I think Brian Kelly's finding this out at lsu. He's not, he doesn't have the energy. He's not putting in the time that Kirby Smart is on the recruiting trail.
Jason McIntyre
I'm curious how the collective works. Does the collective come to Bill and say, hey, we've now got a war chest of 15 million. The guys who were the big donors, they've got their eyes on these three guys.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, well, so Mike Lombardi and Bill would sit down and Lombardi would say, let's pay for a left tackle, a quarterback, one big weapon, two pass rushers in the corner. And I think that's what labardi is going to provide. He'll be the GM that Bill trusts. But I, there are arguments that today's college football is much easier for guys like Bill than it was 15 years ago. But, but college football has its own feel and these Ryan days that are great recruiters and the Kirby Smart and Marcus Freeman, James Franklin, it's an energy game. It is largely a young guy's game. Release Date: January 8, 2025
Host: Colin Cowherd
Guest: Drew Brees
In this episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, the focus shifts to a comprehensive discussion surrounding coaching strategies, playoff predictions, and insights from legendary quarterback Drew Brees. The conversation dives deep into the NFL's evolving landscape, addressing key figures and pivotal moments shaping the current season.
Colin Cowherd initiates the discussion by spotlighting Ben Johnson's reputation as an innovative offensive coach. He contrasts Johnson's creative play-calling with the perceived lack of innovation among defensive coaches, highlighting Johnson's unique playbook and trick plays.
Colin Cowherd [03:00]: "Ben Johnson is a really attractive name because offensive coaches, we can all see, they're clever defensive coaches. ... He's got a different playbook."
Jason McIntyre echoes this sentiment, emphasizing Johnson's selective interest in head coaching positions and his potential fit with the Chicago Bears.
Jason McIntyre [03:00]: "Ben Johnson, from my sources, is interested in the job. ... Caleb Williams is very attractive to Ben Johnson."
The conversation underscores the Bears' current roster strength compared to other teams like Detroit, with Colin noting the Bears lack certain elite personnel despite having talented players like DJ Moore.
The hosts delve into upcoming playoff games, particularly focusing on the Chargers and Vikings matchups. Colin expresses confidence in the Chargers' prospects under Jim Harbaugh and Justin Herbert, while simultaneously harboring optimism for the Vikings despite uncertainties.
Colin Cowherd [05:34]: "I think the Chargers are going to win and I think the Vikings are going to win."
Jason discusses the unpredictability of home underdog teams historically performing well, adding another layer to the playoff betting landscape.
Jason McIntyre [06:11]: "There's a lot of wild card trends. Home underdogs historically have done well in this spot."
The discussion shifts to the Seattle Seahawks, where Colin expresses his support for maintaining Gino as the starting quarterback. He acknowledges head coach Mike McDonald's first-year challenges and the team's brief division lead.
Colin Cowherd [07:02]: "I want Gino to be here. ... Gino knows how we feel about him, and we love him as our starting quarterback."
Jason questions the stability of the coaching staff, particularly after the offensive coordinator's departure, but Colin remains optimistic about McDonald's rapport with the team.
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to discussing Brian Flores, the former Miami Dolphins head coach. Colin critiques Flores' relationships within the NFL, citing reports of him being perceived as a "dictator" which may hinder his future coaching opportunities.
Colin Cowherd [08:30]: "He became a dictator. He ruined a lot of those relationships that he built up through the NFL."
Jason highlights the challenges Flores faces in securing references for new positions, questioning his prospects if he remains in Minnesota or considers other opportunities.
Drew Brees joins Colin for an in-depth conversation about his playoff experiences, the mental aspects of high-stakes games, and his admiration for coach Sean Payton. Brees shares personal anecdotes about handling pressure and maintaining focus during pivotal moments.
Brees reflects on the transition from regular season to playoffs, emphasizing the importance of process over immediate results.
Drew Brees [19:54]: "If you focus on the process, the result will take care of itself."
He recounts a memorable Super Bowl moment where nerves got the better of him, teaching him to stay grounded and execute the game plan.
Drew Brees [27:00]: "Just execute the offense, right? And all those opportunities will come."
The conversation transitions to Sean Payton, with Brees praising Payton's communication skills and ability to motivate players through humor and strategic planning.
Drew Brees [22:51]: "He's an outstanding communicator. ... He can identify with players, man, he makes it fun."
Brees credits Payton's success to his relentless work ethic and ability to innovate game strategies, ensuring his coaching remains effective over the years.
Colin and Jason explore the rumors surrounding Bill Belichick's possible transition from the NFL to college football coaching. Colin expresses skepticism about Belichick's true intentions and the feasibility of his success in the collegiate arena.
Colin Cowherd [34:59]: "Carolina, for one year. ... proven wrong with Jimmy Johnson, Pete Carroll and that NFL guys would dominate college."
Jason probes the strategic advantages Belichick might leverage in college football recruiting, but Colin remains doubtful about his long-term commitment and adaptability outside the NFL.
Colin Cowherd [35:21]: "College football has its own feel and these Ryan days that are great recruiters and the Kirby Smart and Marcus Freeman, James Franklin, it's an energy game."
The episode concludes with Colin reflecting on the dynamic nature of coaching careers and the intricate balance between NFL and college football strategies. Drew Brees' insights offer a veteran's perspective on navigating high-pressure environments and the significance of maintaining focus on foundational processes for success.
