Mark Sanchez
Now let's get this party started.
Colin Cowherd
You're Listen to Fox Sports Radio. Want to thank Tom Brady stopping by earlier. Danny Parkins 2 Mark Sanchez joins us in 10 minutes, but first it's J. Mack, the cynical jets head coach, leaning J. Mack with the news.
Mark Sanchez
No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Herdline news.
Joy Taylor
Boy, it's tough being a fan on this show, man. I, I, you know, I root for the jets and you blast me and then I am negative and you're like.
Colin Cowherd
Hey, come on, turn it around. Well, fans go too high or too low. And although I think Vrabel is going to make the Patriots better, your roster is, I think, notably better than New England today and not that far away from Buffalo. So if you hit and you know what this league is, we've seen this before. A team hits on four draft picks and you look up and go, oh, they're really good. It doesn't take long in this league that that you get the new coaching staff. You hit on your first four picks and you're pretty good.
Joy Taylor
Quickly, positive cowherd. Love it. Let's see if you're positive here. Brian Schottenheimer has become the betting favorite for the Cowboys job after his interview on Tuesday. Per Ian Rapaport of the NFL Network, the Cowboys are said they're going to meet with Scheimer a second time regarding the Dallas head coaching opening. You know, I'm not going to, I'm not going to be as negative as I am on the jets, but this would be an uninspiring hire going from Deion Sanders to Brian Schottenheimer.
Colin Cowherd
Well, his last two jobs have been quick and he was showing the door. Never been a head coach.
Joy Taylor
He's essentially a Nepo baby, isn't he? His dad a legendary.
Colin Cowherd
I think he's shown some capability.
Joy Taylor
What did he show with the jets as OC Trust and actually Mark Sanchez knows that. Maybe Sanchez will defend him, but I'm not the biggest.
Colin Cowherd
Mark's like what you say, all right, get caught in this thing.
Joy Taylor
Well, at least we can talk about it later. All right, next up is the Detroit Lions. Yes. Obviously they lost another coordinator. That's two in the span of what.
Colin Cowherd
48 hours and both excellent. Yeah, I told you. I said when the Lions lost, I said it my podcast. I said it Monday on this network. I said keep your eye on Detroit. They'll be good. Their O line run game and golf guarantees good. They're going to pull back.
Joy Taylor
They're going to pull back.
Colin Cowherd
Now.
Joy Taylor
How much will the jets pull up with Glenn? This is the fifth head coach out of the last six they've hired with a defensive background. Before he left Detroit, Glenn addressed the concerns over his experience.
Mark Sanchez
I'm a coach. I just happen to be on defense. I understand the offense just as well as a number of people. So if you want to hire me.
Joy Taylor
You'Re going to hire a coach.
Mark Sanchez
You're not going to hire a defensive coach. I'm going to talk to the offense just as much. I'm going to talk to the defense.
Colin Cowherd
So Nick Kay is the Rams passing game coordinator. Keep your eye on Nick Kayle.
Joy Taylor
To the jets or Detroit?
Colin Cowherd
The Jets. That's Connor Hughes.
Martin Luther King III
Oh, okay.
Colin Cowherd
He was in new New York. Writer, I think, isn't it?
Joy Taylor
Yeah, he is. He covers New York football.
Colin Cowherd
He says Nick Kaylee, the Rams passing game coordinator. I don't know much about Nick so I will.
Joy Taylor
He's part of the McVeigh tree. Just trust that he knew.
Colin Cowherd
Just hire McVeigh guys.
Joy Taylor
Now just what's his name at the Bengals had a cup of coffee with McVeigh and next thing you know Zach Taylor's in the Super bowl like two years later. So any, anybody from the McVeigh Tree works. Final story. Colin, is Ben Johnson settling in nicely to Chicago? He's got the, you see on the screen there the nice tie that reflect.
Colin Cowherd
Handsome guy.
Joy Taylor
He won the press conference today. You love guys who win the press conference and he made sure to address one of the most important people in the room.
Mark Sanchez
Caleb, I'm, I'm excited to work with you but it's going to take more than just you and there are a lot of pieces already in place and I can't wait to get to work with the rest of you guys. Quarterback success is a higher predictor of winning and losing than turnover ratio which it's been for 20 plus years. Okay, that's changed. So there's no doubt Caleb played a large component into my decision. He is a phenomenal talent that had as many quarterbacks do an up and down rookie year.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I think that's fair. I mean you saw moments. I think I have no problem with the hire. I said McCarthy could maybe deal with the politics but Ben Johnson is by and large Ben Johnson is seen as a home run higher. And this should be noted, Detroit is weaker today not only with Aaron Glenn, not only with Ben Johnson, but Ben Johnson's going to take their O line coach. So you could argue Detroit has lost their three best coaches, their three best assistants all leaving. And Dan Campbell is not a scheme guy. That's not what he is. And that's okay. He's, he's more of a walk around culture builder guy. McVeigh is a scheme guy. He loses scheme guys, they're fine. Same with Andy Re. But so this is, this is really interesting. So Nick Ceriani's had success. He's a walk around guy. He's not scheming it up. He's not calling plays. He lost two great coordinators and they were a mess. Very quickly around that division.
Joy Taylor
Colin, Minnesota could lose Brian Flores. They did. They're going to lose Sam Darnold. He's going.
Colin Cowherd
But the offense is Safe with Kevin O'Connell.
Joy Taylor
Yeah, but a lot of change in those two now. I know Washington has kind of killed the change.
Colin Cowherd
Now here's what I worry about with Detroit. We're just going to hire within. I don't love hiring within. Sometimes your best candidate. Think about this. When you're a big company, there is a chance that the best employee for a huge job is in house. But don't you want to go hire a search firm? Are you going to tell me the three best coaches in the NFL or college football to replace your three best assistants are all in the building? Yeah, that's not. You've got to go look outside.
Joy Taylor
So a lot of these radio hosts, they just are radio guys. You and I have both run companies, have hired people.
Martin Luther King III
We have.
Joy Taylor
It's not as simple as, oh, give me that guy.
Martin Luther King III
You got to do a lot of.
Joy Taylor
Homework on the people. And I think this Ben Johnson move.
Colin Cowherd
There is no Aaron Glenn in the building in Detroit. You got to go pay seven figures and go get. There's no more Aaron Glenn's in that building. And my guess is there's no Ben Johnson in the building.
Joy Taylor
I would agree with that guess. I think there's a world where the Bears, you know, they get the right, they have a good draft. Why can't they win that division next year?
Colin Cowherd
I think they can compete for it. Absolutely. This is, this is a better situation than Washington. Montez sweats better than anybody Washington had on the D line. Jalen Johnson's a better corner than anybody Washington had. And though they had Terry McLaurin, you get D.J. moore, Keenan Allen, Roma Dunze, you get two tight ends. I like this team's better than Washington a year ago.
Joy Taylor
They've got some pieces.
Colin Cowherd
They've got some. Yeah. And in this division, by the way, unlike the Washington division where Philadelphia is stacked defensively and the Giants are decent defensively, this is a soft defensive division that Ben Johnson and Caleb are facing. In fact, I would argue the best defense at times was the Bears. So you'll see a practice defense that may be better than most of the division. That's how I see it.
Mark Sanchez
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Agree J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news.
Mark Sanchez
And thanks for stopping by the Herd lie news.
Colin Cowherd
Let's bring in Mark Sanchez, Fox Sports NFL analyst. The last time the jets were viable.
Mark Sanchez
Baby, you okay? You hanging in?
Colin Cowherd
Good to see you, buddy. I have. I. I said I. I kind of like Aaron Glenn. I thought what he did with like six starters. You watched Detroit at the end of the year, from Thanksgiving on, they were missing six starters.
Mark Sanchez
Yeah, that's a. That was a tough deal. And, and it's. He's one of those guys who subscribes to, like, hey, they pay me to coach. Like, not just the superstars. I got to coach the whole roster. He mentioned that in his press conference. So I think, I think regardless of it being a tough market, he's, you know, we see a lot of these coordinators and coaches. Whether this guarantees that it translates to a bunch of Super Bowls and a bunch of playoff runs and wins, I can't guarantee that. But I'll tell you what, I sit down with a lot of coaches in those production meetings before games, and he's been one of the most impressive from the last four years of calling games. Wow. So once again, does that mean they go 100 to start the season next year? I don't know. J. Mac obviously thinks no, he's under on that.
Colin Cowherd
If you can sit in a meeting.
Mark Sanchez
With, you know, I and I and once again, some coaches, you know, kind of put on a show. This felt genuine. You know, as a player, you obviously respect the former player aspect, understanding what the guys go through. I think immediately he has some equity with those guys.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Mark Sanchez
And, you know, the people around him that I know I was. I've been impressed with and I haven't heard Mark, I like the roster. Oh, they got plenty. I mean, you're going to have to figure out what you're doing at quarterback.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Mark Sanchez
And don't ask J. Mac, because I know he's down in the dumps about a guy who played better coming off of a achilles injury. He's 41 and had a better year than he did his last year in Green Bay. Like.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Mark Sanchez
I mean, better than top half of the league. You're telling me, like, you can't win with the court if you just sign up and erase the name and the personality. Obviously, for you, J.P. you'd say, will we take those stats to win? It's better than a lot of other guys that are playing.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Mark Sanchez
So. And you think a defensive guy like Aaron, I know he said I'm a coach, but yeah, he's got a defensive background. He won't take those stats. I don't know. I mean, that's one thing, the performance, then it's like the attitude. The are we going to be here all offseason? Are we all in? That's another issue. And then the numbers issue, because they're going to want to go get some players. They're going to have to figure out how to handle the roster financially. So those three factors are going to play into what you do at quarterback. But I think, you know, I've heard great things about him. I've had great experiences with him in one on one. So, you know, obviously as Jessica, you got to root for the guy at least. J Mac.

I'm so sick of hearing men talk about women's basketball. If only there were a professional WNBA player with her own podcast I could listen to. Colin Cowherd
Presented by Capital One, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports. Okay, let's take out the first year of Josh Allen. Rookie years mostly don't look like Jaden Daniels. Sure, he has become a much more efficient quarterback. So is that film study? Is that growing up? Is that weapons? There is no question that Today, toe to toe with Mahomes in a big spot. I. I don't think anybody's better. I trust them both. I love Josh. Four years ago, red zone. I didn't trust him. So how has he eliminated those? Is it film study or maturity? You tell me.
Mark Sanchez
I think it's a little bit of both. Maturity plays a huge factor into it. I think the reason he's been in some of those great situations this year. Let's not forget his offensive coordinator. Joe Brady's getting head coaching interview, you know, interviews for a reason and opportunities for a reason.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Mark Sanchez
Career low in interceptions. I think he's got six.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Mark Sanchez
So you eliminate the sacks. I think they're doing the best they have in his career there with eliminating sacks and least amount of sacks taken. You factor those things in and it was never a concern. Can he make the big play? We know he can do it. Does he have the arm strength? Are you kidding me? He's got all those things in spades. It was okay. How do we eliminate these negative plays? And that's where they've kind of cracked the code, I think with this particular team. And roster for roster. I don't know if this is the best roster he's played on. Right. Like, he's had some better playmakers at times than he does right now. But these guys seem to gel. Just like Mahomes. These guys seem to gel. They're gonna figure it out. Exactly. So it's like they're leaning on the run game and it's not. We have to eliminate every single negative play. You can no longer make mistakes. Well, you can't play like that. It's unrealistic. And that's not fair to put a quarterback in a situation like that. That. So what have they done? They just cut them in half. Right. Instead of throwing 12 picks, you throw six. Awesome. I can win with that because that's about three or four more touchdowns, a few more field goals, a couple more wins, and everybody's feeling a whole lot better about everything. And that's where he finds himself. Because of the coordinator, because of the run game, because of his maturity. So many factors go into that, but it's just like Lamar. Right? And it's one of the hardest things and maybe one of the most unfair things in sports. But if you don't win this one, nobody's going to care. Right. Like you got to beat the Chiefs on the road in the playoffs. The Chiefs are 3, 0 against these guys in the playoffs. Right. So that's. It all comes down to today or this weekend. Excuse me.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, so it's. I have tried to defend. I always, whenever my people hated the Lakers that weren't Laker fans, and whenever they'd complain and say it's the refs, I always ask two questions. How many free throws did you miss and how many turnovers?
Mark Sanchez
Sure.
Colin Cowherd
And if the number's like 16, I'm like, and you want a perfect game from the officials. Right. If you miss nine free throws and have nine turnovers, I don't want to hear about the guy in the striped shirt. So I, I generally believe, you know, I think the Texans had the worst special teams day a playoff team has ever had. You're not going to win the game. I defend the officials. I think officiating today is hard because athletes are bigger, faster, and the cameras catch every right. You can literally see the pile now. You, first super bowl, they had two cameras, now they have 50. I mean, your takeaway on the assertion Kansas City's getting breaks, can you go.
Mark Sanchez
Back and look at some of the games that they've had in pivotal moments, whether it's Super Bowls or what? Oh, that should have been a hold. But I can find a hundred games from this exact season that we just experienced. Every game I called this year, there were five or six calls where you're like, I could have gone this way, or, nah, I probably wouldn't have called that one. That's always going to happen. That one, the one at the end, you know, Patrick Mahomes, to his credit, called out his own flop. Like, I appreciated that on the sideline. This one, though, if you're gonna run around here and make moves and try and make guys miss and not get out of bounds, and then at the last second, kind of hit the deck. That one was like, we're pushing it a little too much because you're. You're expecting a lot from the defense to be able to just immediately pause, hit the pause button and stop everything, you know, so that one was a little much for me, you know, finding a way because of all the media coverage and the angles of these cameras, and you gotta help those guys out. If you're gonna expedite stuff from New York, then, you know, you gotta tell them what the frame by frame says. You gotta help them out. So it's that. That one was rough. That's a tough flop right there on this side. He called it out, so I appreciate it. And yes, there's more plays that decide the game than just the penalties. And there's always gonna be the back and forth of. He should have called that. No, he shouldn't have called that.
Colin Cowherd
So your experience, you had Rex, who was almost. I said this when you were a Jet and I was at the other place. He was almost anti offense at times. It would drive me nuts.
Mark Sanchez
Necessary evil.
Colin Cowherd
Right, but you also had various coaches. You know, Pete was a defensive guy, but you had good coordinators. What is the advantage? There's obvious stuff that a guy like me can say. Give me the advantage in your career of having an offensive head coach. If there's one thing you said, said, you know, it is a little different. They do add something.
Mark Sanchez
No, I, I think, listen, you got to be the head coach of the team no matter what, and you got to be able to reach both sides of the ball and really all three sides of the ball, including special teams. You got to be able to talk to those guys and it has to resonate with them. You know, Dan Campbell is more of an offensive guy than a defensive guy, but he's got the whole team's attention. Andy Reid, offensive guy, but he's got the whole team's attention. So whether it's an offensive or a defensive coach, you gotta be able to speak to everybody on the roster and coach all 53, 60 plus, you know, all the guys in the off season. There's gotta be that. The advantage to having somebody who's an offensive guy is just obviously seeing it the same way that you do, you know, especially when they're from your same tree or, you know, if you're a West coast offense guy. The way I grew up, being with somebody like Coach Schottenheimer, who had had good experience and affiliation with offenses like that, really helped me. So after my rookie year, when him and coach Steve Sarkeesian sit down my former college offense coordinator at usc and hey, what is Mark like? Give me. Let's talk your playbook from college. Let's, let's collaborate on some of this stuff because I need to get through to my guy and it's tailoring his thoughts and his beliefs to what I know. And I'm used to those things are very important. And the best ones, the ones that have success are able to resonate with their quarterback, get him to play a collaborative brand of football and that's it. Once you get the quarterback right. I know I sound like a broken record up here sometimes, but you get the quarterback right, a lot of things look better. Look at Josh Allen, look at all these other teams, look at Patrick Mahomes. I mean, get that position right and you'll be just fine.
Colin Cowherd
Okay. I'm going to take a break. I want to talk about Eagles commanders. You've got.
Mark Sanchez
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
And a couple Jaden Daniels pieces of video. It's. He's the best rookie I've ever seen. I said Andrew Luck I thought was the best rookie. But you did get some downside. He was a very aggressive thrower sometimes into coverage. Jaden, I get a lot of this. I don't get a lot of downside. So we're going to talk about that special. He is special. Live in la, it's the Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd, weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am Pacific. Hey, Steve Covino. And I'm Rich Davis. And together we're Covino and Rich on Fox Sports Radio. You can catch us weekdays from 5 to 7pm Eastern, 2 to 4 Pacific, on Fox Sports Radio. And of course, the iHeartRadio app. Why should you listen to Covino and Rich? We talk about everything, life, sports, relationships, what's going on in the world. We have a lot of fun talking about the stories behind the stories in the world of sports and pop culture. Stories that, well, other shows don't seem to have the time to discuss. And the fact that we've been friends for the last 20 years and still work together, I mean, that says something, right? So check us out. We like to get you involved, take your phone calls, chop it up, as they say. I'd say the most interactive show on Fox Sports Radio, maybe the most interactive show on planet Earth. Be sure to check out Covino and Rich live on Fox Sports radio and the iHeartradio app from 5 to 7pm Eastern, 2 to 4 Pacific. And if you miss any of the live show, just search Covino and Rich wherever you get your podcast. And of course, on social media, that's Covino and Rich.

Presented by Capital One, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports. Learn about the Eagles over the Rams. Let's just start with that kind of vague question, but, like, what did you. What did we learn?
Mark Sanchez
Well, listen, the eagles rushed for 200 yards. The weather was, was a huge factor. I think the Rams, you know, three guys that they really lean on, cup was kind of up and down. Puka was hurt fighting through it, you know, dropped a couple balls, uncharacteristic of him. And then Kyron Williams with some big, the. The big fumble, turnover, you know, a couple key sacks for Stafford. And on the road like that, you can't afford that many mistakes. You know, it's similar to what we're talking about with Josh Allen. Like, you can't beat yourself. And the Rams started to, you know, give away the ball a little bit and, and found themselves in a tough spot at the end. So it, it tells you that the Eagles are exactly who we've seen all year. That rushing attack is real. You know, that offense runs through one guy, and that's Saquon Barkley hands down. No two ways about it. That guy's going to get his almost every game. Your only hope is to try and limit him. So in the two matchups these two teams have had this year, divisional opponents, they're one on one, and both games played out in a very similar fashion, where it's a tight ball game for three quarters and one team just takes off in the fourth and runs away with it. The Eagles did it the first time, and Saquon, you know, went off in that game. I think they rushed for like 200 yards again, one of their seven games this season, including the playoffs, to rush for 200 yards. I mean, it's hard to lose a ball game. You rush for 200 yards, like controlling the clock. Control the clock, you dominate the other team. Emotionally, it's like, embarrassing for the other team. The defense is down, so that's a big factor. But then in that second matchup, Jaden Daniels in this offense couldn't do anything all game for like three quarters, and then they scored 22 in the fourth. So this offense is scary. Cliff Kingsbury has these guys dialed in certain spots, and they go off the running game explodes. Those guys out of the backfield explode. Jaden Daniels can just take off and run at will. So I'm just so impressed with him at this position, right? Like, he's on the road in the playoffs, I know exactly what that looks, feels and smells like. And this kid, they're asking him to do a whole lot more than hand the ball off like they asked me to do. Sure, we hit some big third downs, we hit some throws down the field. We threw some touchdowns. Great. But this kid, I mean he's all over the place and the ball's in his hands in critical moments. And it's like, remember that old like Staples campaign? Remember the that was easy button? Yes. Feels like that guy can press that button whenever he wants. And he's just here the entire time, so consistent, so calm. His heart rate is like a resting heart rate when everybody else is just going through the roof. I mean, they were on the road against the 1 seed in Detroit. That place is going berserk.
Colin Cowherd
We saw Sam Darnold unravel.
Mark Sanchez
I mean this kid just was unfazed and he just operates at a different speed. It's incredible to watch. So I'm fired up. It's a familiar opponent for these guys. I think the other huge factor, interior offensive lineman Sam Cosby, the right guard, he's down and you're going against those two big guys in Philly, in Davis and Carter. I mean, I think Carter had two sacks last week. Either him or Davis had two sacks last week. Those guys are like, are you kidding me? So. So that center Biotish is going to have a lot of work there for. For the commanders and that's pressure interior immediately on your quarterback. So that's gonna be huge.
Colin Cowherd
Let's go to the film. Jaden Daniels, 6 Rookie quarterback to play. Let's see. Let me look at this up on the road. Six rookie to start in a conference championship game. You were one of them. So let's. Let's look at some films.
Mark Sanchez
Yeah, this is what I liked about their last game and what Cliff. Cliff, where Cliff I think has evolved and I think some of that, you know, Anthony Lindsay, running backs coach, I think a lot of that's a big help for him. Understanding different systems, knowing how to. In four minute offense, essentially you have the lead at the end of the game and you know, for us, for example, contrasting two different styles, we're just going to hand the ball off and normally that's what you do. Occasionally you'll take a shot and the shot is to basically knock the team out. The commanders did it last week and this was a huge play in the game. If you queue up the tape, they're going to show on a third and five with about four minutes left, they're up 14 points, right? You're thinking, run, run, run. Keep the clock running. Time is more important than points. The 11th defender, that's the safety. He's your last line of defense. He's standing at like six yards from the ball. They all think this is a run. They're putting extra guys in the box. So what does Kingsbury do? He puts in Bates instead of Hertz to show him he doesn't want to tip it off, that this is going to be a pass. He uses motion, brings the tight end back, forces communication. Here goes the linebackers clapping at each other, screaming at the D line, hey, shift the front. We got to go from an over to an under. The offense just changed the strength of their formation. We need guys on this side to stop this run. And look at how tight these guys are to the ball. They finally get their front shifted. And this is why you use shift in motion. It's not for fun. You're trying to get information and gain angles on these blocks and then show that it's going to be a run. Show low pad level run action, not just play action. And look at Anzalone. Anzalone guys to go fit up on Bates right there. He doesn't think this is a pass. Are you kidding me? And you're going to throw the ball on 3rd and 5 with 4 minutes left? Time is more important than the points. So at that point, Anzalone's toast. Poor guy. He's going to fit up the run. And then there goes Bates behind him. He's taught to slip that linebacker. And it's basically fullback sale. An old west coast play that Anthony Lynn knows and clearly Cliff Kingsbury knows. And your rookie quarterback knows how to execute that play in that situation on the road. One seed places going bananas. And this guy has the poise and maturity and accuracy to hit that ball. He might have taken the post for a touchdown next time. I'm sure Cliff coached him up on that. Okay, I would. That would have been the ultimate knockout. But this was impressive to see a quarterback operating at that level. And then the other two clips are just more fun highlights of how this guy beats you with the run.
Colin Cowherd
Let's see.
Mark Sanchez
So look at the designed run. We know what zone Reed is. That guy's in a bind. He doesn't know what's going on. That's essentially triple option. He could throw that ball once he leaves, too. It's like the old Lamar stuff we've seen before. I've broken down on the show before and Then you get free runners. Not just one, but two free runners on a quarterback.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, this was great.
Mark Sanchez
This guy goes and scrambles for a first down. I mean, Brady dropped a nugget that, that is like absolute gold on tv, but he said something about this kid. When you get free runners on him and I don't know how they calculate this stu shout out to them, but he's got like 300 plus rushing yards. When you get a free runner on a quarterback, are you kidding me? I mean it's, that's like unfair. I wish I could do that. You know what I mean? Free runners, you need an answer. You need to throw immediately. You're not thinking the quarterback's just going to rush. So now as a defensive coordinator, it's hard enough to get one free runner right there. They had two. I mean, you're staying up all night all week. You're not getting sleep this week. You're just trying to find ways to get free runners on this guy and hope he makes a mistake. This guy just runs away from you on your best defense you've drawn up all day. I mean that is a tough thing to play against and prepare for. So it's the designed runs, it's the impromptu off script runs when you're in a good position on defense that eliminate negative offensive plays and the trust they have in this kid, it's. It's incredible, man. I think their chances are higher than people think.
Colin Cowherd
Same here. So there's six quarterbacks. Story time. And let's go back into your career. Take me to your. You're one of six quarterbacks to start. Yours was. Who was the AFC championship game again?
Mark Sanchez
The first year was the Colts.
Colin Cowherd
Okay.
Mark Sanchez
We were up at halftime.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, so let me. Let's start this. It's.
Mark Sanchez
It's.
Colin Cowherd
It's Thursday and you're starting on the road in the loudest stadium. We found out they were piping noise into. It's Peyton Manning and tell me, were you, were you nervous? What was it? Tell me, the walk into the stadium, what was it like?
Mark Sanchez
It was. I was glad we were playing indoors because it was cold and as a SoCal, you know, rainbow sandals wearing kind of guy. Those got put away around Halloween in October. So this is a different kind of deal. And played against one of the best players to ever play. The big thing you got to do is eliminate that try and not watch the offense. When they're on offense, you got to focus on you. You can't get distracted by this other stuff. And it has to be a Hyper focus and singular focus that gets you prepared for that game. I think Coach Schottenheimer, we had Kevin O'Connell at the time, and those guys were so good at getting me ready to play in those crucial moments, especially in the playoffs. I think we had some of our best performances on offense. But that first game, we're up at halftime and I'm a rookie in the NFL, like, oh, my God, we're going to the super bowl, baby. Like, let's keep this thing rolling.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Mark Sanchez
Well, we find out from Tom Moore, who was the offensive coordinator with Peyton at the time. And Tom Moore became an assistant later for the jets and, like, an advisor. So I asked him about that game just randomly, and so did Rex, and Rex was in the room talking about it, and Tom Moore said, I didn't call a single play till after halftime. It said nothing. In the second half, he goes, peyton did his own stuff.
Colin Cowherd
Really?
Mark Sanchez
So apparently Peyton just started dialing up everything, ran everything, no huddle in the second half, and went after it. And I mean, shoot, when you. When you could play like that, I don't blame him for doing it. And it was just funny to hear that after the fact. And Rex was like, I knew something was different in the second. I knew you guys did something. And he. He's. You know, we're half laughing, half like, oh, man. You know, we had a chance. And so, you know, we got conservative on offense. The difference with Jaden Daniels and the way, you know, we attacked it. Right. There's. If you trust that guy to do some stuff, he might throw the ball a little more. Whatever.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Mark Sanchez
So I thought it was. It was an interesting approach.
Colin Cowherd
And then you had a defense. His.
Mark Sanchez
Oh, my God.
Colin Cowherd
So, I mean, your. Your game plan.
Mark Sanchez
Yeah, like, the run. The run game. The run defense is, like, third worst in the league for Washington, and they're playing against the best rushing attack, you know. But they also played against a great rushing attack last week.
Colin Cowherd
Yes.
Mark Sanchez
In Detroit. But they jumped them early. When you go up 14, it's hard to just hand the. Hand the ball off. Right. You got to score some points. You're chasing the other team. So they jumped them quick, shocked them in their home stadium. Like, that was. That was big. So. And then the other one was. Was 2010 against Roethlisberger and the Steelers. But we got down 213 in the first half, and that one, like. Like, we start to climb out of the hole. But, you know, we're playing against Paul Malu. We're playing against, I mean, Paul Mallow is one of those guys you're studying during the week and it's like, okay, I know this zone drop defender, you know the safety. It's like a three buzz. He's got hooked curl, whatever. Like, okay, I know where this is going to be. He runs to the other side of the field and plays man to man on somebody. And I'm like, dude, wait, what clip is this? I'm asking. Shoddy. I'm asking. Other guys are like, dude, that's Troy. Being Troy. You can't account for that. Just have an eye on him during the game. I'm like, okay, hold on. I got to do all the stuff I normally do and then just find Troy Paul Mullet. So that was the, that was the second go round and we didn't quite pull it out.
Colin Cowherd
Well, the one thing. Well, we gotta go. That was good.
Mark Sanchez
Sorry.
