Mark Sanchez
Now let's get this party started.
Doug Gottlieb
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. We were talking earlier about quarterbacks that kind of fake like they're going to slide. And so like defenders get very frustrated. They can't hit anybody. They don't make what they used to relative to what offensive guys make. We have that Kenny Pickett video at college at Pittsburgh. We've shown you the, you know, the Mahomes video where you know, Kenny Pickett looks like he's going to slide. So these defensive players are very frustrated. The rules are against them. The money's not going in their direction. You got quarterbacks faking like they're going to slide. And Tom Brady, again, I understand it's a late hit, but a three game suspension feels very punitive to me. And here was Tom Brady earlier on the Trevor Lawrence play.
Mark Sanchez
Defensive players have to be aggressive. That's their nature.
Doug Gottlieb
I was trying to be aggressive on offense.
Mark Sanchez
We tried to block aggressively and at the same time the defense tries to tackle aggressively. So I don't know. There's, there's an aspect to me that I think the quarterbacks and the certainly the quarterbacks need to take better care of themselves. The aspect again for a play caller.
Doug Gottlieb
There's more design runs for quarterbacks ever.
Mark Sanchez
Now than in the history of the NFL.
Doug Gottlieb
So are we really trying to protect quarterbacks?
Mark Sanchez
Because if you are trying to do.
Doug Gottlieb
It through the rules, then why are.
Mark Sanchez
The offensive coordinators not protecting their quarterbacks by keeping them in the pocket?
Doug Gottlieb
And maybe they fine or penalize a.
Mark Sanchez
Quarterback for sliding late, you know, and.
Doug Gottlieb
Say look, we, if we don't want.
Mark Sanchez
These hits to take place, we've got to penalize the offense and the defense. Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
I mean what do we complain about as fans think about this in the last two, three years if there's one or two plays we complain about it is defensive players being penalized for marginal late hits or their bodies on the quarterback. So if we're complaining about it, what do you Think the defensive players are thinking about it. And again, I have no problem with a one game suspension, but a fifth of the season feels like too much to me. J. Mac with the news. No, no, no, turn on the news. This is the Herdline news.
J. Mac
We talked a little bit about it earlier. The Lions just walking wounded right now. They are 111 tied with the Chiefs for the best record in the league. But man, the injuries are mounting. Colin, they have now seven players on ir. Six of them are defenders. Aiden Hutchinson obviously the biggest one. Dan Campbell spoke about Detroit's injury issues.
Doug Gottlieb
Some of these have just kind of been one of those like, chalk it up to, you know, that was a, that's a freak deal. You know, that's a, that's kind of an odd thing that happened and how it happened and you know, there's no rhyme or reason and this happens. I mean, it just does. As long as I've been in this league as a player, as a coach, and some, some years are great. It works out great. Some years it's just, it's like this, you know, and you know, you overcome it. Well, the good news is, yeah, I mean it's all, it's all. I mean their linebacking crew has been totally decimated.
J. Mac
It's front seven too.
Doug Gottlieb
Colin, here's the news. The good news though, if you're going to have a side that's decimated, you want it to be that side. Because the further you go, statistically, more defensive players get hurt than offensive players. And so as long as your tackles are healthy, your quarterback, your weapons are healthy, you have a chance to win the Super Bowl. Kansas City last couple years been kind of rare where their defenses bail them out a lot. But the Niners, great defenses don't have any rings to show for it. Baltimore's defenses before this year, no, no, no rings to show for. If you're going to have injuries, I'd rather have them on the defensive side. Give me my firepower going into the playoffs.
J. Mac
We have the note. Jamal Adams has been signed to the Lions practice squad.
Doug Gottlieb
Well, he's almost a safety slash line.
J. Mac
They're going to have to put him in linebacker. But listen, every coach, smart coach in the league knows he can't guard anybody. So he's going to be a massive liability in coverage. He's Seahawks and Jets, remember? No, he would make some splash plays in the box, but like he, he's just.
Doug Gottlieb
Well, you're not bringing in desperation, you're not bringing him in for coverage, you're bringing him in to be a linebacker and chase, I mean he's, he's going to have to chase. Not receivers around. It'll be running backs and tight ends, which I think he's capable of doing.
J. Mac
I saw the show before us, they were talking about Aaron, the defensive coordinator of the Lions as a coaching candidate. Listen, if he's able to coach his team to make a run with this defense having nobody, that would be tremendous. Glenn, of course a former Jet great at cornerback. I gotta say something good about the Jets. All right, next up is the MVP award. Colin, did you know there hasn't been a non quarterback to win the NFL MVP since 2012? Adrian Peterson. But Saquon Barkley has probably the best case we've seen in a while. He's got 1766 yards from scrimmage, 13 TDs and he's got an MVP chance. Here is Saquon Barkley on his ultimate goal.
Doug Gottlieb
I appreciate the MVP chance, so you know, it's great.
Mark Sanchez
But at the end of the day.
Doug Gottlieb
The most important thing is winning football games. And I've been so locked in and so focused on my preparation and the.
Mark Sanchez
Way that I work throughout the week.
Doug Gottlieb
There's a reason why I'm getting those chance. So if I continue to take care.
Mark Sanchez
Of that, then, you know, when the season's over, we'll look up, see what happens.
Doug Gottlieb
But at the end of the day.
Mark Sanchez
It'S continuing to get wins and put ourselves in position to go deep in a running playoffs.
Doug Gottlieb
Running backs generally don't age well. Derrick Henry has. Saquon Barkley has. I would have no problem giving Saquon Barkley the mvp. I mean, they've switched their offense. Jalen Hurts now is throwing about 16 to 18 times a game. They've changed their offense and Hurt and Jalen Hurts was an MVP candidate two, three years ago and they've just reduced his role. So I, it didn't bother me at.
J. Mac
All the difference with MVP versus say Heisman in college. This is clear. Most valuable. Saquon is extremely valuable, but he's not as valuable as Josh Allen. You take Josh Allen off the Bills, Colin, they're like a five win team. Come on. It's got to be Josh Allen who's heavily favored. You saw the odds there on the screen.
Doug Gottlieb
I'm not disputing that. I do think he is. I think he's had major influence. I don't think he's the most valuable.
J. Mac
Give him offensive player of the year award or whatever it is. Could Josh Allen even lose it? He's Got the Rams this week out here at SoFi. You know, there'll be a lot of Bills fans and you need to talk to your people about the Stafford injury. That's being talked about behind the scenes. I don't know.
Doug Gottlieb
Where did you get that information on the Strand? Walking the dog last night.
J. Mac
I cannot reveal my source.
Doug Gottlieb
Why do you always have Stafford information? You live in the same.
J. Mac
Anyways, moving on. And then Josh Allen has at Detroit. That's a huge game. I don't want to say golf could catch him, but that's a big swing game for him. Then he's got jokers, the Patriots twice and Jets. I think Josh Allen Collins probably is a lock. Final story. We're talking about college football rivalries and the flag planting, which is nonsense. Well, Baker Mayfield, who seems to be one of the pioneers of flag planting, he has chimed in on this post game celebration in college football.
Doug Gottlieb
College football is meant to have rivalries.
Mark Sanchez
That's like the Big 12.
Doug Gottlieb
Banning the horns down signal.
Mark Sanchez
Just let the boys play ou. Texas does it every time they play. It's not anything special. You take your L and you move on.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, I'll leave it at that.
J. Mac
He's got no tail. Fists being thrown.
Doug Gottlieb
Baker's gotten very good at the podium. He used to be a firecracker. He was just starting stuff. Now he's the voice of reason. You notice that He's a very. He's a changed man. He is.
J. Mac
He's not liking my tweets that were negative about him like he did when he was back in the day. He would do that.
Doug Gottlieb
You see.
J. Mac
Like, Baker Mayfield liked it. I'm like, oh, is this a bot? The real Baker Mayfield, he's liking negative tweets about and using that to fuel.
Doug Gottlieb
Oh, Michael Jordan did that, too. KD does that. Nothing wrong with that. Do you do that? No, I don't. I don't go on there. You're on that thing all day.
J. Mac
I'm not. I'm just during games I'm not on there usually.
Doug Gottlieb
It's not good for you.
J. Mac
Waste of time.
Doug Gottlieb
Kind of.
J. Mac
I don't need to help the world's richest man anymore.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay, that's a take.
J. Mac
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
J. Mac with the news.
Mark Sanchez
Well, that's the news.
Doug Gottlieb

Jon Stewart
Hey, this is Levar Arrington here from up on Game and listen, I want to talk to you about something very serious for a minute, all right? Something personal to me and right now something that should be personal to you as well. In our country, the hate is at an all time high and it's like we're going backward. The hate is winning. We can't allow that, all right? It's out of control. So many different people, so many different groups are facing too much hate and it's enough. It's time for it to stop. We need to stop, regroup, change the momentum as a team, because that's what we are. Everyone in this country is on the same team. So let's act like it. And when a team can't get it together, what do you do? You call a timeout. And that's what we need to do. Call a time out against hate. Let's think about what we say and do. And when we see hate, when we see someone doing or saying those things we know are wrong and hateful, we need to call it out.
Doug Gottlieb
Out.
Jon Stewart
Imma call it out. You need to do the same thing. Visit standuptoallhate.org to help and join me and calling for a timeout against hate by following at what's up with Hate or posting the blue square emoji.

Mark Sanchez
I didn't know.
Doug Gottlieb
Got a haircut, by the way.
Mark Sanchez
I did very corporate. I had to be a villain in a role in a big time Hallmark movie coming out now.
Doug Gottlieb
So you're buttoned up.
Mark Sanchez
Tighten up, man.
Doug Gottlieb
So if you have the Eagle, so you've already started to jump into your film. And we were talking about Saquon Barkley's influence having a. I'm trying to think of your career. So you had a great left tackle, you had good receivers, you had Rex Ryan, you had an excellent defense. You're running back. Did you do. Who did you get?
Mark Sanchez
Who was Thomas Jones and then Sean Green?
Doug Gottlieb
Okay, those are good players.
Mark Sanchez
Great players.
Doug Gottlieb
Philadelphia sort of morphed and modified. Green Bay's done a little bit of this with Josh Jacobs. You look up Mark a couple years ago, we were like, running backs don't get paid. And I watched Green Bay and Philly and I'm in Baltimore, I'm like, those are running teams, no doubt. Give me your thoughts on. On how Philadelphia mid season has kind of morphed into something.
Mark Sanchez
Well, I think some of the key statistics there were weeks one through four. They're two and two and the sky's falling. Get Sirianni out of here. You know, this team's terrible. We can't win a game. They go on bye week. Week five since that bye week, they're eight now. The teams they beat at the beginning, the first five of that run on the eight game heater, Browns, Giants, Bengals, Jags, Cowboys. Yeah, they should win those games, right? The Cowboys were banged up in the game. They played personnel. Yes. The last three commanders, Rams and Ravens, the last two were on the road. Those are quality wins. Quality wins. You know, later in the year, you get into November, December, those are big time matchups and they played well. What's the real difference? And it's one Saquon Barkley limiting some of the times that Jalen hurts, has to even put the ball in the air, taking pressure off of him has been huge. Those rookie DBs, are you kidding me? Cooper DeJane is playing out of his mind.
Doug Gottlieb
Two of them.
Mark Sanchez
And that, I'm telling you, I say this all the time on the show, but that kid playing nickel in the NFL, Your rookie year is really, really hard. Like, you got to fit up in the run game. You got to understand quick, shifty slot receivers. And you Got to mirror those guys inside. You got to be physical when you fit up in the run game. There's a lot on your plate. It's different than outside corner. And outside corner is hard. This is just the next level of awareness, intelligence, football IQ and physicality. So that kid's playing lights out. I think one of the other issues was they were minus six, I want to say, in turnover differential those first four games of the season. Since then they're like plus nine.
Doug Gottlieb
Yes.
Mark Sanchez
So that tells me that their formula run heavy, establish own the line of scrimmage, which, you know, their offensive line knows how to do with coach Stoutland, like that's exactly what they do. Especially as the season wears on. They dominate the line of scrimmage. Now we start scoring points. We have timely completions from Jalen hurts to guys who can run after the catch. Now you add hertz in some of that run game. Teams are chasing you trying to catch your points, they're chasing your points that you've already put up. Well, here comes the pass rush, here comes the Eagles defense, and now they suffocate you. And then they just start running away from these teams because they've taken care of the football. And that's why those fourth quarter numbers for Saquon Barkley are insane. That's, you know, that might put them in the top of the MVP race.
Doug Gottlieb
So it's not that you're good in the NFL, it's often when you're good because first quarter can often be schemed.
Mark Sanchez
No doubt.
Doug Gottlieb
If you look at Bo Nick's fourth quarters since week four, markets like veteran numbers that's often trailing. Everybody's seen your best stuff.
Mark Sanchez
No doubt.
Doug Gottlieb
It's a whole different ball. You can have an offensive lineman that gets dinged up in the second quarter. You could have, you know, some of your sets are not running. You don't have the personnel is there. I mean, that to me just seems really impressive. It's not that he's good. I can see if his first 12 plays he was money. He's better in the fourth. What does that tell you?
Mark Sanchez
Well, I think they. I don't think last night is their ideal formula for winning. Right. Every once in a while you'd probably try and limit it to, you know, five or less games a year, hopefully two to three if you get in a shootout. Okay. We'll kind of adapt to that situation and we're going to have to put it up 40 times. But you look at the attempts per game for Bo Nicks and they obviously Trust them. And Sean Payton is riding that fine line. He's walking a tightrope of developing the quarterback and winning this year without letting the quarterback screw it up. Right. A rookie quarterback, which can happen. I've been there, dude. It's, it's hard. You go through, you go through a rut, you go through some bad games and you're the reason you're losing some of these games. It's frustrating for everybody. So he's, he's riding that wave and that momentum. I think he's done an excellent job of yes. Last night. They're going to have to put the ball downfield like we're seeing on a lot of these clips.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah.
Mark Sanchez
But of his 30 plus attempts per game, whatever he's at, he's right around there. I'd say 10 of those are almost no brainer kind of screens to the halfback, to the tight end, tunnel screens to the wide receiver, bubble throws out on the perimeter which are essentially an extension of the run game. And those should be high completion percentage. Momentum builders for the quarterback, confidence builders for the quarterback. So he gives him so many of those and he sat in this chair and told you I don't want my quarterback flying. The top gun mission at the end of the movie to save the world from nuclear destruction every single play because it's exhausting and you definitely don't want to do it with a rookie quarterback. So I think he's done a great job of taking that pressure off him, giving them easy completions and then relying on the defense. The defense didn't play great last night, but they got away with the win. Winning when you're not playing well or don't play to your strength or you're not totally on track formula wise, that's a huge, huge confidence builder, especially going into their bye week. So this team's going to be dangerous and I'm impressed that that Sean Payton has this much trust and gives Bo neck such a long leash.
Doug Gottlieb
So both Denver and Philadelphia Buffalo playing their best football now. Whereas Kansas City still scuffing it. Baltimore now struggling more and more. Their special teams have gone a little sideways. Take me to a season with Detroit. I said this. It's not that they peaked too soon. They lost their entire linebacking corps. Go to your best jet seasons and then seasons that maybe weren't that. Some of this is attrition. I feel like Detroit now is losing. This morning. I would take Philly over Detroit. I did not feel that five weeks ago.
Mark Sanchez
It's injuries, definitely injuries. The Injury bug. You hope it, if it does, you know, rear its ugly head. You want it to be early in the season and you want to be able to get those guys back.
Doug Gottlieb
Right.
Mark Sanchez
If you could have your preference now, you can't always do that. So you got to manage well with the teams that you're talking about, whether it's Detroit, Philly, the biggest thing there is, once again, there's going to be a couple outliers in the season of this isn't our kind of game. It's not going the way we'd like to script a game. Right. How can we adapt? Because one of those playoff games is going to be like that. Maybe two, maybe all of them. And so if you can have that contingency planning, you put a good performance on tape when it doesn't look right or you win the ugly 13 to 12 game, that gives you so much confidence because it's just in your back pocket for later on. And we've look at guys. We're down personnel. Congratulations to backup so and so who elevated and played well. You show the team that in the team meeting. Make sure everybody knows, hey, man, we got guys waiting in the wings that can play. As soon as we get our stud back, we're going to be really set, you know, so you show that kind of stuff, you build on those kind of plays and performances, but you try and get back to your formula at all costs. When you talk about the Chiefs, they're getting everybody's best shot for the last two years. I mean, it is. It's hard when you're a Final Four team, when you play some of these teams the next year. I can only imagine after two super bowl wins, you're getting everybody's best shot. Bryce Young in Carolina, I mean, took him to the wire a couple weeks ago and then last week again. So that's part of it. And bottom line to this war of attrition that you alluded to is, and this is an old, you know, Harbaugh thing, whether Jim, John or their dad. But the season's long for a reason. Seasons long to show you who's really good and who can outlast who. And that's part of the way this thing is built. So you need tough guys that love football, that are in it for the long haul, can play hurt and show up for you when you when it matters.
Doug Gottlieb
All right, well, you always bring tape. We have it on Aaron Rodgers this week. I'll also ask you about that hit on Trevor Lawrence and what I'd said is defensive players have had all the rules taken away. They no longer make the big money unless they're pass rushers. It's there and then now quarterbacks are faking going down like it's something. I want to give you a couple seconds to get that digested. We'll do that. And when a team can't get it together, what do you do? You call a timeout. And that's what we need to do. Call a time out against hate. Let's think about what we say and do. And when we see hate, when we see someone doing or saying those things we know are wrong and hateful, we need to call it out. Imma call it out. You need to do the same thing. Visit standuptoallhate.org to help and join me in calling for a timeout against hate by following at what's up with Hate? Or posting the blue square emoji.

Doug Gottlieb
All right, Mark Sanchez, who will have the Eagles hosting the Panthers. And the Panthers run defense isn't very good, so you could be talking about Saquon Barkley a lot.
Mark Sanchez
Oh, boy.
Doug Gottlieb
Like a lot. Okay. You bring tape. We love this. And I've always been a little reluctant to lean you into the jets because of your history there. But so I love the fact that you're going because that game was, by the way, a winnable game for the Jets. I mean it was. It had 28 to 7 right in front of you. So let's go to the tape. What do you got?
Mark Sanchez
Yeah, it was. It was really a wacky game and so many back and forth momentum shifts. And you were. I mentioned this in the broadcast with Adam Amin and somebody needed to just stabilize their team and kind of call everybody up. All hands on deck. Hey guys, get back to our basics, get back to our fundamentals. And the real tipping point in the game I thought was the second and seven. The first clip I'm about to show you, and this was a classic after a bye week show, a counter on offense for the jets offense. Todd Downing, he does the self scout. Hey, we run a lot of this play in the red zone. When we get specific coverages, I got the counter to beat it. So if we roll this clip on second and seven, this is where the tide really turned and let Seattle back in the game. So you have two on two up top. It's a three by one formation. They're playing a combo coverage basically at ends up. Like man to man on the backside, the corner on Adams and then the linebacker on the back breeze Hall. The two safeties are going to help out to the speed which is the three receiver side. Okay. The passing strength down here, this is a play that they run quite a bit and a lot of teams run this in the red zone. This post is number one. The one step slant by Garrett Wilson and then the little return route by number two. So now they throw the counter instead of the quick one step slant. We're going to throw one step, three steps to the slant and then back pylon.
Doug Gottlieb
That's right.
Mark Sanchez
Okay, so we're going to counter it. We got one on one against Joe Job. Boom. They run it and Garrett Wilson just dust them. And I mean, poor Job. It was like Job in the Old Testament. My man Was getting trial and tribulation after trial and tribulation. The guy rallies late in the game and makes some plays. But you got three options to throw this football. Excuse me, Two options to throw this football back, pylon with plenty of air and let him run into it under it. Or you throw it right at him because he's wide open and just get to the end fast. Kind of throws this tweener. So you roll back the tape and see where it. Where this ball lands. And it's kind of in between both pilot, you know what I mean? Just kind of miss it. It's a excellent play call. Excellent recognition, excellent execution other than a physical mistake on the throw. And he just missed. And guys are going to miss. That happens.
Doug Gottlieb
So next.
Mark Sanchez
So then the very next play, this. And this is where, you know, it's a crushing blow for a quarterback because this is. We call this Mr. Destiny. If you hit that play, totally different story, different narrative. We might just run away with the game.
Doug Gottlieb
Different outcome.
Mark Sanchez
You don't. Well, stuff like this happens. So watch Big Leonard Williams. Now, we talked about counter punch on offense is a counter punch on defense. They're going to show five guys down on the line of scrimmage. Aaron sees the overload to the left, so he's going to make a flipper call. So you hear him on the. On the audio, he says flipper, flipper, flipper. Basically telling the offensive line, instead of sliding to the field, slide to the boundary. U3. I'll handle these next guys on the right. And if Witherspoon shows up and they bring six on five, no problem. I'll handle them with the throw. So what he's looking at is a free runner off the edge, no safety in the middle of the field. This looks, feels, and smells like cover zero, which means they got one more than I can protect. I got to ditch this ball and beat Devin Witherspoon off the slot. He's coming from depth. It's man to man across the board. Perfect. Let's roll. So Aaron Rodgers catches the ball. Bam. I got my answer. Quick throw. And before that, Devonte Adams is going to peak real quick just to make sure the quarterback's good. And here comes Leonard Williams and Jaren Reed. Normally they're rushing. They teach them in this rush to touch. So you rush to touch the guy in front of you and then disengage and haul out of there. Well, Leonard Williams, are you kidding me? With this awareness, he can stop the run, he can rush the passer, and now he's in coverage, reading routes, like understanding what route concepts are coming. This tells me McDonald and this defense are really starting to get in sync here because he hunts up that quick in route from Garrett Wilson and picks the ball off. Are you kidding me? Goes 92 yards and my man was flying. The big cat was rolling.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah.
Mark Sanchez
So it was that really turned the tide in this game. You hit the first play. Oh, yeah, done deal. You might walk away with it and send Seattle back home. That happens. And it's, oh boy, now we're reeling. And you, you factor in some of the drops, some of the, the sacks in the second half and then all the penalties on defense for the jets defense, Seattle walk the ball down the field and that's really where where you end up. But if people are going to say, you know, I know the narrative yesterday was, man, Aaron called out the other guys. Well, listen to the sound bite.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay.
Mark Sanchez
Listen to what he says after the throw. I. To me, this is taking accountability for. Let's run it for the throw. I think the two place stretch where Ms. Garrett opened to go up 28, seven throw a pick six kind of changed the momentum of the game. I tried to throw about five inside. Wind was low and consistent and maybe I should have thrown a little flatter. Cause it was wide open. But yeah, shouldn't. I mean, I gotta hit that. It doesn't matter, Wendy. I played win before, it was inconsistent, but I gotta hit that.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, that, that fight. I like that.
Mark Sanchez
Sure. And if you're gonna. I know the sound bite that everybody hung onto was, well, there's 10 other guys out there. Yeah, well, yeah. I mean, how many times did Jordan and Kobe and all these other guys. Brady. Call out other people on the team like, hey man, this is a team game. Sure, I'm gonna fall on the sword. That's my bad. I blew it on the throw. Bad throw. Wind or no win, it's my job to hit it. Yeah, I could have thrown it flatter, but it sounds pretty contrite to me. So then when he says stuff about the other players, it's, hey, man, we're all in this together. We all got to make this thing go. And if you don't have 11 out of 11 doing the right thing on every play, if you take turns one at a time messing up plays, you can't win games. And that's really where they've been. I think that is a result of, you know, they have to be. They're essentially like independent contractors. The head coach is gone. The, you know, the turmoil at gm, the turmoil with offensive coordinators, and now everybody's kind of like, looking forward. But are we supposed to be this cohesive unit or are we talking about next year? Already we've hired a search firm for our new head coach and gm. Like, there's so much going on, it's hard to just hand them the ball and say, hey, you know, lace up the cleats and go play for each other with all this noise that's, I mean, a little ridiculous and unrealistic.
Doug Gottlieb
So I want to. I want to talk about this. I am not defending the hit, but I am defending defensive players that the rules have moved away. Defensive linemen now, if they put their body weight on a quarterback, I mean, guys can get ejected. And so Trevor Lawrence slides to me, a count late.
Mark Sanchez
It's late. It's definitely a late slide.
Doug Gottlieb
Three games to me is way too punitive. What's your take on this?
Mark Sanchez
It's. I think a lot of it is based on the result. And when you slide last second in a crowd or in a play that's moving quickly and you end the play immediately, the guys around you don't totally know. Now when he gets clipped like that and you see the after the hit effects of the hit, that's where I think this became a bigger issue. And people don't want to see that. It's a lot like the TUA stuff, you know, when you see that kind of body language and body movement or lack of control physically from a player, it's scary. It's scary to people. And, you know, this is a violent game and you sign up for these hits, it's. That's a really tough one because it happened so last second. And, you know, they're. What are you gonna do? Just run up to them and tap them? Like, I don't know. As a linebacker, what. I try and put myself in both situations, right. If I'm going to slide late, it's tough for a defense to react. Well, what. What am I coaching the linebacker to do? Wait for him and then kind of react to whatever and then he runs right by you. Like. And then you get cut for not making tackle. You know, I don't know how to fix that situation. You know, way back, what I was taught is before I learn how to slide, just dive head first because people get out of your way. You know what I mean? Like, if you're running and you dive head first, people think they're going to get hit, their knees are going to get clipped, so they kind of Move. And you dictate terms by diving forward, but you also expose yourself if somebody's, you know, ready to hit you. So, you know, those things are. They're going to pop up every once in a while. I don't care what kind of rules you have, unless it's flag football, you're going to get that.
Doug Gottlieb
We got a couple of minutes left. You had a defensive coach. Brady did, too. That's happened. I do think there's an advantage to having, if you're a young quarterback, Sean Payton or Andy Reid. I do think it matters. There's this sense that Chicago has to get an offensive coach. Do you believe in that?
Mark Sanchez
I don't think it's necessarily offensive or defensive coach contingent on Caleb being successful. I don't.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay.
Mark Sanchez
I think part of the issue there is somebody who's strong enough to mitigate a lot of the media fodder and put out fires. Case in point, Dan Campbell. Now that the Lions are this really relevant team and a juggernaut in the NFL and they're a powerhouse. Well, the photo that Jameer Gibbs put out the other day. Right. I guarantee you behind the scenes, I can all but guarantee I'm not there.
Doug Gottlieb
They're not happy.
Mark Sanchez
What? I would be pissed if my player did that.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah.
Mark Sanchez
And I'd have him in the office immediately and we'd have a quick conversation. And we're not going to do that anymore. Now, publicly, I got you and we're good. Don't worry. But we need to have a conversation, and maybe the whole team needs to be in on this. And this is a, you know, this is important. Have a little come to Jesus meeting and move on. But the way he handled it publicly was perfect. And they need somebody like that in Chicago, which means they finally have to get the Holy Trinity. Right. Right. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They all have to be rowing the boat in the same direction. Okay. So Ryan polls whoever the next head coach is, and this quarterback. This head coach is going to inherit a GM and a quarterback, but they all have to get on the same page. So I think that's. That's going to be an interesting hire, but I don't think it's necessarily offensive or defensive.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay. You know, D'Amico, Ryan, to turn Houston around.
Mark Sanchez
No, and that's the other thing. Like, you get a coordinator who's strong enough to handle the quarterback development, who's been around it long enough with a head coach that doesn't necessarily, you know, infiltrate that offensive room. He'll assert his head coaching ability and you know, trump card if you will. But hey, offense, you do your thing. You know how to groom this quarterback. You guys do it, handle it. I'll handle the defense and handle everything publicly and take pressure off you guys. That's, that's really the goal.
Doug Gottlieb
Usc, we got a minute left.
Mark Sanchez
Oh, let me keep going about the Bears then.
Doug Gottlieb
I know it's painful. I went to the game this weekend. It's painful.
Mark Sanchez
Ouch. No, that was tough, man. Young kid playing early and trying to figure it out. And two pick sixes. That one hurts.
Doug Gottlieb
It does. But you know, it's a good brand.
Mark Sanchez
Oh, it's a great brand.
Doug Gottlieb
You didn't, you didn't have these role when you were there.
Mark Sanchez
It was rainbow parts of goal and a couple of times late in the career there we were like, we were bummed about the Rose bowl because we thought we should be in the national championship, you know, so it was a different reality, a different time. But that's all right. They'll be all right.
Doug Gottlieb
You wouldn't have been transfer portal though, would you? Would you have been a portal guy? You were so Cal, kid.
Mark Sanchez
You just lose, you lose a lot of those stories about players developing over time, learning from the guy in front of them and, and persevering through a little adversity. So if it's constantly, just move on to the next thing when times get tough, I don't know.
Doug Gottlieb

Doug Gottlieb initiates the conversation by addressing the growing frustration among defensive players due to quarterbacks faking slides. This tactic, Gottlieb argues, hampers defenders' ability to make impactful plays, as quarterbacks increasingly adopt behaviors that negate traditional defensive strategies.
The discussion extends to the punishment of veteran quarterbacks like Tom Brady, with Gottlieb finding a three-game suspension overly punitive.
Mark Sanchez counters by emphasizing the inherent aggressiveness of defensive players and the need for quarterbacks to better protect themselves.

The conversation shifts to the Detroit Lions, currently tied with the Kansas City Chiefs for the best record in the league but grappling with significant injuries, particularly on the defensive side.

A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to the NFL MVP race, highlighting Saquon Barkley's impressive statistics and his strong candidacy.
Mark Sanchez delves into Barkley's performance, emphasizing his impact on the Eagles' offense and his ability to alleviate pressure on quarterback Jalen Hurts.
The dialogue contrasts Barkley with Josh Allen, acknowledging Allen's significant influence on the Bills' success but debating who holds more value in the MVP contention.
Gottlieb and Sanchez discuss the criteria for MVP selection, considering both individual statistics and their contributions to their respective teams' victories.

The discussion further explores the challenges defensive players face under current NFL regulations, particularly regarding quarterback protection rules and their effects on game dynamics.
Sanchez and Gottlieb exchange views on coaching strategies, team cohesion, and the importance of adaptable game plans, especially when teams face unexpected challenges like injuries or high-pressure situations.
As the episode wraps up, Doug Gottlieb and Mark Sanchez reflect on the broader implications of the discussed topics, emphasizing the need for strategic adaptability and maintaining team integrity amidst evolving league dynamics.
Mark Sanchez: "The season's long for a reason... You need tough guys that love football, that are in it for the long haul." ([25:11])
Doug Gottlieb: "What's the real difference?... It's season’s long for a reason. Seasons long to show you who's really good and who can outlast who." ([25:11])
Both hosts underscore the importance of resilience and strategic planning as the NFL season progresses towards its climax, setting the stage for future discussions and analyses.
Doug Gottlieb: "We're all on the same team in this country. So let's take a break from our hate so our team can regroup." ([00:00]) – Although part of an advertisement, it sets the tone for unity, a theme echoed later in discussions about team dynamics.
Mark Sanchez: "Leonard Williams can stop the run, rush the passer, and now he's in coverage. This tells me McDonald and this defense are really starting to get in sync." ([33:08])
Doug Gottlieb: "Saquon Barkley... he's got an MVP chance." ([07:50])
Mark Sanchez: "If you don't have 11 out of 11 doing the right thing on every play, you can't win games." ([35:32])
