Paul Pierce
Find your local station for the herd@foxsportsradio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. Thanks for listening to the Herd podcast all Right. One of my favorite guys. We don't get it much. The hall of Fame, Paul Pierce. He's busy. He's on speak after us. 19 years in the NBA. All right, let's. I don't mean to create controversy, but Joe Mazzulla, when Tatum and I, the whole thing about a flagrant foul. Give me a break. I don't know, but he fell on his wrist and he was in pain and miss. Look, called off the trainer.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Paul Pierce
What do you make of that, man?
Rich Davis
Let me tell you something about Joe. He, He's a no nonsense type of coach, you know, like every time I go to Boston, he's like, paul, let's go. Let's go do some MMA training. Like, he likes to. He's a fighter. Last year, before the season, you know, all you. He, he brought in a motivational speakers, you know, maybe a former player, a coach or something like that. He brought, you know, he brought in, he brought in a Navy seal.
Paul Pierce
He did.
Rich Davis
I was there. I was there. And he was doing activities with the Navy seal, like, and it was just like, that's who Joe is. That's who Joe is. So when I saw it, he was like, get up. Like, that's the type of mentality he's installed in this team.
Paul Pierce
You got play hurt in the playoffs.
Rich Davis
Let's go. You got to like, let's go. And then when I looked at it, the fall wasn't that bad. So, you know, it wasn't. It didn't look that bad when he fell. It looked like a normal type of fall. Thank God it was only his wrist.
Paul Pierce
Yeah.
Rich Davis
And he'll be fine. But I love Joe. I love the mentality he installs in this ball club. And you can just see it. So I'm like, man, you don't need to run over there for all of that.
Paul Pierce
That's how he, his culture is toughness. Toughness because they got enough guys that can shoot threes. He wants to create toughness.
Rich Davis
And his off time, he don't go to the golf course. He, he goes, mma. That's him.
Paul Pierce
So listen, I, I sometimes I wish Westbrook could play, could shift down something into a second or a third gear, but that's not how Russell Westbrook plays. Did you ever play? Because I thought Russell was so valuable to Denver. He just gives him great energy and he's a great rebounder for a size. You ever play with a guy like that, that kind of has one gear, but it's contagious the way he plays.
Rich Davis
Well, yeah. Kevin Garnett Yeah, one gear. I mean, he plays at the playoff intensity during the 82 game regular season. That's what Russ is. And so that's what was lacking from in the Denver in their squad because I feel like the Denver team lacks some leadership that they lost when they lost KCP and you know, Jeff Green and all the other veterans they had during their careers. And their coach. And their coach. Exactly. But like Russ, I can say this. I bet you Russ probably led the locker room meeting after coach got fired and probably like, look, guys, our goal stays the same. He's that type of person, like, we're here. I came here to help y'all win another championship. Whereas I don't know, you know, what's Joker's mentality or who else is in that locker room. But I know for sure that Russ said something in that locker room and it shows on the court, his leadership.
Paul Pierce
Yeah, the. You know, it's funny watching Houston. The warriors clearly said, don't give them any transition points. Make them beat us in the half court. And again, amen. Thompson, Jalen Green are talented.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Paul Pierce
But Jalen's kind of one of those guys. It's like, well, he's not a point guard. He's not a great jump shooter. He's a great athlete. I honestly picked the Rockets in seven in this series. Six or seven. And after that game, I was like, I don't know if the Rockets are good enough in the half court.
Rich Davis
No, that's their, that's their Achilles heel right there. They can't really score. They're built on defense.
Paul Pierce
Yeah.
Rich Davis
You know, that's what E. Maze, his team when he was in Boston, top tier defense, that's what got them the number two seed in the West. And so. And they're young, you know what I'm saying? They built on their young stars. They have some veterans around them, but their stars are young. And so if you notice that around these playoffs, you got these young stars with these veteran players to where it's like they're playing against these veteran teams that know how to win. And so late in the game, it just seems like everybody's crumbling. These young teams.
Paul Pierce
Well, I mean, the warriors, every time down offensively, it ran through Butler, Curry and everybody on the floor in the organization knew it. I felt like Houston was kind of like Sengun or cross your fingers. They almost got panicked.
Rich Davis
Well, they know who they are. Golden State.
Paul Pierce
Right.
Rich Davis
We don't know who the Rockets are. They're still learning who they are, like, because there's regular season there's playoffs. You got to know when you get into the playoffs, we can depend on this. You know what I'm saying? And they're still learning one another that they like. We know sanguine is good, but who can we trust?
Paul Pierce
Who? I don't trust anybody else.
Rich Davis
That's what I'm saying. And that's where you learn in the playoffs who you can trust. Because in the regular season, you can get away with all of that, whatever you're doing. But the playoffs is a different monster.
Paul Pierce
Well, depth and athleticism.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Paul Pierce
When in youth wins a lot of games in the regular season, a lot. You play hard, you win.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Paul Pierce
Are you more impressed with Minnesota or more disappointed in the Lakers?
Rich Davis
I think I'm more impressed with Minnesota and I'll tell you why. Colin. Ant Man. Ant Man's game has matured so much.
Paul Pierce
It's incredible. You can see the work.
Rich Davis
Like, yes. I mean, he's like. People are like, why are you selling it for threes? But he's knocking them down at a high rate now. He's making his teammates better. And that's even more scary because now if he's gonna be out here understanding what to give the game, that's dangerous. Because when I was as a player, me, when I came into a game, it got to the point where I learned like, what does the game need today?
Paul Pierce
Oh, okay.
Rich Davis
And you fill it out and be like, oh. And that's what I saw from Ant Man. You know what? I maybe don't have to go for 30 today. Let me make them better.
Paul Pierce
So your first year, you didn't get it?
Rich Davis
It took me a while to get it. It took me a while to get it because, you know, I was a scorer deluxe. And so it was just like, you know, what do I have to do to make like today they need my defensive rebounding in my playmaking. And then if I'm there down the stretch, I can make some big shots, but I don't have to have a mentality of going like, I have to get 30 for us to win. He understands that now at a young age. And it looks so beautiful to watch. And the scary part about it is, like, how do you make this adjustment now? Do you stay home on the shooters? Oh, well, he's good enough to go out there and get you 40 if you open up those lanes now and win that way. So I don't know. This is going. It's going to be interesting to see what the adjustments are for the Lakers.
Paul Pierce
Listen, I thought Chris Finch and the T Wolves had a better plan.
Rich Davis
Yes.
Paul Pierce
I mean, nothing against jj but it was his first playoff coach. Right. I didn't know what the Lakers offensive plan was.
Rich Davis
No, it was just get the ball to Luka Braun and look, only had.
Paul Pierce
One assist, so he won't get it anybody else.
Rich Davis
And so that's right. They was like, hey, he's going to have to go for 40. But we're not going to let these other guys have big games. Our role players, Jackson, Vincent, all these other guys, you know, even Austin Reeves, we're going to limit those guys because when they play well, the Lakers usually win.
Paul Pierce
Right. So, you know, it's funny, I watched the Knicks, it was such a playoff game. Detroit plays great, and then all of a sudden New York's like, All right, bro, 21 nothing run.
Rich Davis
Yeah, that was crazy.
Paul Pierce
What do you make? I know what every Knicks player is and I think I know what Carl Anthony Town is. I've seen him play live three or four times. He is so talented off offensively.
Rich Davis
Right.
Paul Pierce
They may have to move off him. How do players view Carl Anthony Towns?
Rich Davis
I think they view him as an offensive talent, you know, definitely an all star in this league. And you know, those are hard to come by, you know, so, still learning. But I saw some growth in this game yesterday. Was it yesterday or the other day? Like, because he's just known as just a head down shooter. Score.
Paul Pierce
Right.
Rich Davis
You know, doesn't see the double teams, doesn't have a high iq, you know, but I saw, I was like, man, he looked like he's learning a little bit more. He's making extra plays, these extra passes that I saw that I didn't see him make over the years and that can be scary. Yeah, that could be. He can see it now. He can see it now. I mean he was just a one dimensional player. But if he's going to whale around his game and give the effort on the defensive end and give them some grit inside, they gonna be tough.
Paul Pierce
I want to, I want you to talk about, take some time, go back to your first playoff game. So, and I've said this before, most human beings aren't built to be 611. So to ask a 611 guy carrying 245, 255, hey, play hard. 82 games. I mean, I'm exhausted. If I fly from Chicago to LA the next day, I'm exhausted. Yeah, you guys are burning 7,200 calories. You're getting, you're banging around, your bodies are just, you're just big guys. NFL's got one game a week. Baseball guys sit in a for five days when they play basketball. Hockey guys, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go. And at least in hockey, the ice helps you move. So I always said, NBA guys, you're not getting NFL effort every Tuesday in Orlando. Go to your first playoff game as a pro. Were you shocked by the intensity of it?
Rich Davis
I wasn't shocked because you don't know what it's about until you're in it, you know. You know what prepared me for this type of intensity? Because I played high level in college, you know, in Kansas. Big games, big games every night. So I kind of knew. But you don't really know until you. There, but there. But I had a sense of urgency once I played my first playoff game and I understood that, like, look, these. You can't waste possessions no more. That's. That's the name of the playoffs. You can't have wasted possessions.
Paul Pierce
That's what Houston had.
Rich Davis
Too many wasted possessions. Same thing with the Clippers. Too many wasted. And you have to play with a sense of urgency. So I knew that coming in. And you know, we had a fiery coach at the time, Patino, Brian, at the time, who kind of like. And Antoine, you know, so we were like mentally prepared. But you never really prepared until you get out there after like the first couple minutes, you know, you know that you're gonna have to raise your intensity and you gotta have awareness and you gotta play with a sense of urgency. Like, this is the last possession. Every single play.
Paul Pierce
Do you know your first playoff game? Do you remember it? It was against the six.
Rich Davis
I think I had about 30. 30 and 10, something like that.
Paul Pierce
At 31, 11 rebounds, three assists, four steals. Who are you guarding, man?
Rich Davis
I was guarding everybody. McKee, Snow. I was guarding Snow a lot.
Paul Pierce
The finals team?
Rich Davis
Yes. The next year.
Paul Pierce
Iverson, Snow, McKee.
Rich Davis
Yes.
Paul Pierce
Maybe the worst finals team ever.
Rich Davis
Tekembe Mutombo.
Paul Pierce
Yes.
Rich Davis
Yes. Yeah, we played them the next year after they went to the finals. So we made it. My fourth year, we made it to the playoffs. We went straight to the Eastern Conference finals, too. I thought we were going. I thought we were going to play the Lakers that year. We went up two. One against Jersey. And then J Kid happened.
Paul Pierce
Yeah, he happened a lot.
Rich Davis
He happened a lot.
Paul Pierce
Paul Pierce. So as we look at everything you've seen, I think we all look at Oklahoma City and we all know they have a good GM and a good coach. And we know SGA is good. A Lot of people, myself included, are like, are they going to win road games? They're really young to beat a team by. What do they mean by 50? When you see OKC, what do you see?
Rich Davis
I see a team that look like they thought they should have won the title last year. They look like they want to send a message to the rest of the league because, you know, they were the number one seed last year. They're the number one seed, but they don't get no respect. They're not on national television every day. They don't get the bright lights and all of that. So they a bunch of young dudes who are looking to earn their respect.
Paul Pierce
They're a feisty team.
Rich Davis
Yeah, they're very feisty. And they know that nobody, because we go on these shows and be like, who's coming out of West? Well, Oklahoma City won the west by 14, 15 games, and nobody's still picking them. You know, everybody's like, well, the Lakers go to State and they like yesterday they was like, y'all better start saying our name or we're gonna make y'all say it. That's.
Paul Pierce
I mean, the thing about in Boston did this last year where Boston had a lot of nights last year they won the title where they blew people out.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Paul Pierce
And oftentimes the Celtics on the road would go on the road, face a playoff team, blow them out.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Paul Pierce
Oklahoma city won by 16. A lot.
Rich Davis
Yeah, a lot, a lot.
Paul Pierce

Rich Davis
No, no, no, turn on the news.
Paul Pierce
This is the herd line news.
Jalen Hurts
Great having truth in studio. Speaking of buckets, Giannis had a big performance in game one, putting up 36:12. Yeah, but calling it wasn't enough as the Pacers took down the Bucks 117.98 to take the series lead. Pascal Siakam led the way for Indy with 25. 7.
Paul Pierce
He's a great player. He doesn't get any love. Siakam's a great player.
Jalen Hurts
Great player. Multiple time all star defense. Indiana, by the way, was up as many as 28. Giannis said after the game we didn't have enough urgency going into game two. Hopefully we could change that. One really interesting side note actually didn't even happen on the court. Damian Lillard and Tyrese Halliburton got into a little back and forth dame from the bench. Colin ends up getting teched up, which you almost never see. He was not playing. He's jawing with Haliburton, fellow all star and then he gets a T. I can't wait to see Day Mack in this series. Him and Halliburton. Regardless of who wins this series, that's going to be primetime entertainment.
Paul Pierce
Yeah, I, I just think the Pacers are by pick. The Pacers in six. I just think they're better, I think they're more athletic, I think they're a better team. And Siakam is such a good player. You know there's these guys in the NBA. Bam. Adebayou is a little bit like this that they, their games maybe aren't as memorable or you know, they're involved in a trade and they get, they, they just don't get. They're not headliners but like bam out of Bayou is a really good player. Siakam's a really, really good player.
Jalen Hurts
He is.
Paul Pierce
And I don't know who is you know, Evan Mobley got a little siakam in him maybe, but you look at him, I think I, I'm. Yeah. Jared Allen, I, I think Indiana's absolutely. With or without Dame, Indiana's the better team.
Jalen Hurts
Caitlin Clark was in attendance, by the way. He got a big ovation. Well deserved. That was pretty cool. Excited for that series regardless. Can't wait to see Dame back in the lineup. Sticking with the NBA, the Knicks hosted Detroit. Look at Jalen Brunson. Saturday. Things weren't looking good for New York, down by eight in the fourth until a 21 nothing run flip the momentum to help New York win game one. Jalen Brunson was ice cold in the first half, but he heated up in a major way in the second half, finishing with a game high 34. You see campaign hit a big triple.
Paul Pierce
It was just, it was just like, you know, Detroit had some veterans on the floor, but it was, it was like an easy 21 nothing spurt. Yeah, I mean, it was a lot of open threes, a lot of open, open looks. It was like Detroit gave you everything they had. They're just not. Next year they'll win a series. They're not ready to win a series.
Jalen Hurts
They feel to me like a year behind Orlando. They're on the way. Yeah, but they're not there. They have not won a playoff game, Detroit game since 2008.
Paul Pierce
But they got the right coach, they got the right star in Kate Cunningham. They'll be fine. But it is a baby step league.
Jalen Hurts
Yeah, Cade was a little bit cold, got into a rhythm, was decent. I think he'll be better in this series. Still feels like New York. Their experience with that duo, Brunson and Cat, too much to handle. Speaking of great young players to the NFL, where Jaden Daniels is coming off an incredible rookie season, leading the Commanders to the NFC Championship and taking home offensive rookie of the year honors. In a recent interview, Jaden talked about his approach for year two and said, quote, last year was last year. That's great, but it's a whole new year now. I still got to go out there and I've got to prove myself to my teammates, the organization, each and every day that I'm getting better. Now, the reason I bring this up, Jaden Daniels actually just had this is not hyperbole. The single greatest rookie season in NFL history, first across the board in every major statistical category. You see it there, which jumps out to me. 14 wins and then obviously the total touchdowns, 37. Colin, we talk a lot about culture. You know what Helps culture. Winning. You know what helps winning? Great quarterback play. Jaden Daniels is exactly that.
Paul Pierce
Yeah. And in a division with Philadelphia, it's pretty obvious what they have to do to get better draft O line and D line help. You are not beating Philadelphia. And this is also a cold weather conference. Philly, Washington, New York. Okay, so it's a cold weather conference. What does that mean? Vertical passing games have limitations. That's why Debo fits. Yeah, you know, Debo can do underneath stuff, jet sweep stuff. You can put him out of the backfield. Debo's are really smart. Like these northern conferences. You're not throwing the ball down the field a lot in December and January. So I think Washington just got to get more physical, bigger up front, more depth and they'll just be fine.
Jalen Hurts
Yeah. Going back to Cliff Kingsbury, we talked about it last week. Not wanting to leave Washington because he didn't want to leave Jaden Daniels to pursue New Orleans. They got Dan Quinn, they got a good gm, Adam Peters. Washington, I think maybe you get a tight end as well. Maybe one more weapon. But to your point, offensive defensive line is the key to the ufl where the Renegades escaped a nail biter to nail brighter to improve to 3 and 1. With the battle Hawks looking to tie the game from the three yard line in the closing seconds, RJ Nay Harris picked it up and took it to the house for a touchdown to seal the win. Colin, look at 99 yards, pick six. The Renegades defeat the Battle Hawks. Like it, Colin. Good stuff.
Paul Pierce
Jordan with the news. That's the news. And thanks for stopping by the herd lie news. Yeah, this is, this is one of the more eventful weeks. So basically I made a decision. I was talking to Ann and I'm like, yeah, I'm gonna be making soup. And so I went on like four different walks yesterday in between games, I'm like, oh, I gotta get out of the house. I can't just sit on the couch all day and made myself some food. And this weekend, these back to back weekends, the first weekend of NBA playoff basketball and the first and the NFL draft in April, late April are great for me. Are great weekends. They're the, they're the first weekends. March Madness has got a feel. So you get that. You get this in March, the first weekend of March Madness. But I had so much fun sitting around, just sitting, watching great basketball. And this upcoming week, what makes the draft so much fun is, you know, it's the trade component. So like, like most NFL teams, I mean, Jimmy Johnson was the first guy to make a massive trade in the NFL. When he made that move, that Herschel Walker Vikings trade, the Giants had only made one trade as a franchise. So the teams in this or in this league, the really good teams like Philadelphia, they're risk takers.
Colin Cowherd
They.
Paul Pierce
They make moves. The teams that have what I would call more frugal and conservative ownership. Cincinnati doesn't make a lot of moves, so I'm really interested. You know, Belichick may not have done it in the first round. Belichick made a lot of moves over the course. He'd have a guy he'd target, he'd move up to get him. He would accumulate draft picks. You know, Pete Carroll was a guy that if he could, he would make moves. So what I like about the draft is you think you have it figured out. I did my mock draft, what I would do if I was a general manager. I think I did it like last Wednesday or Thursday. And I. It's funny, it's like buying a Powerball ticket. You're absolutely sure you're going to win every time. Every time I buy it, I'm like, let's go buy some jet skis and golf clubs. I'm winning this puppy. I do my mock draft and I'm like, yeah, every single one of these makes sense. But what happens if the. Now I have Shador Sanders going three. I don't know what they're going to do there. They need a quarterback. They may go Abdul Carter. But if the Giants trade down, that could change this whole board because all of a sudden teams that have different needs come up. I do think the Raiders getting a running back, they may trade down and get the kid from North Carolina or Ashton Genty that just. There are certain teams like Tennessee quarterback need Jaguars struggled stopping the run. Mason Graham. Need Raiders running back. Need jets tight end. They don't. They just don't have tight end production for several years. That is a need. Yeah. Bears along with Montana. Sweat edge rusher, need San Francisco. You got to get a tackle to replace Trent Williams within a year or two. Knee Cowboys running back need most of this stuff. Atlanta, by the way, at 15. I have them taking Shemar Stewart from Texas A and M. They just don't have a pass rush. It doesn't seem like they've had a consistent pass rush for five years. I tend to be. There's a. This is not a draft. I mean, if you look at the positions, quarterback, corner, edge, tackle, running back, tight end, receiver, linebacker, running back. There's a. There's A lot of O tackles.
Jalen Hurts
Yeah, there'll be a big run, but.
Paul Pierce
There'S a lot of teams with needs. And it just so happens they have good draft picks. And it just so double happens that there's a player in that position like Miami's got to get a better old line. If two is your quarterback, you need a good backup quarterback, which they didn't have. And you need a good left tackle.
Jalen Hurts
And Tron Armstead just retired.
Paul Pierce
Yes.
Jalen Hurts
One couple of notes here. Atlanta, I think look at Mike Green there as well. Shemar Stewart. Some people think he's a top 10 guy, some people think he's a second round pick. I think he's a really good player. But the production didn't necessarily match the traits the team to watch here. By the way, someone told me, watch out for San Francisco at 11. They don't pick this high ever. So they might be the type of team that would want to move up to, let's say six or seven.
Paul Pierce
Well, they also have 11 picks.
Jalen Hurts
They have a ton of picks, I think second most. And as a result in the fact that they believe their roster is really good, they look at it as a fluke that they're at 11. They might be a team. Hey, we're at 11. It won't cost us a ton to move up a little bit.
Paul Pierce
Hey, I could see them taking the running back from Carolina and saying, we love Christian McCaffrey, but what if we can give him 14 carries? Not 19.
Jalen Hurts
Yeah, 20 touches, not 28.
Paul Pierce
Yeah. I could see San Francisco saying, yeah, we need offensive tackles. We can do that in the second, third and fourth round. You're not going to get Hampton in the fourth or fifth round. So San Francisco is an interesting team.
Jalen Hurts
I think that's that. And then I think you'll see a massive run of offensive linemen. And then I would also look at Tampa if you're looking for someone to move back. I think the Bucs could move back. Obviously not in the top.
Paul Pierce
I heard the Rams want to move back.
Jalen Hurts
The Rams always like picks and you want more cracks at it. Leslie and Sean McVay, really good track record. We talked about last year, hitting with verse, not to mention Braden Fisk. They've hit on so many guys. Kyron Williams, mid round picks, that's the key. If you can get one draft, look at Seattle in 2012 when they get Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner, K.J. wright, Cam Chancellor, Richard Sherman. If you can hit one draft, that's the key. But you got to have multiple picks. You got to have a lot of picks. That's why I think you mentioned the Rams can move back.
Paul Pierce
Well, the Rams were considered a rebuild team and the last two drafts they have hit on every defensive pick and you don't have to pay those guys for four and five years. So it's like suddenly the Rams rebuild, you're like they're a play from the conference championship. I mean, I think the Rams really.
Jalen Hurts
A pretty good game.
Paul Pierce
No, I mean if they're at the 15 yard line in a snowstorm, a dome team with a chance to end up in the NFC championship against Washington and I would have taken the range. So it's you hit on a couple drafts. That's what's hurt. Dallas, it feels like Dallas, his last couple of drafts, they've been pretty good in the first round, but a lot of, a lot of either misses or marginal players. Second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth round.
Jalen Hurts
Yeah. And also if you're speaking of Dallas, if you're Dallas and you, you pay the quarterback, you pay the receiver. You gotta pay Micah Colin. What's the direction of that franchise? That's another team. Running back Omarion Hampton. That would make so much sense. Get Dak some help in the backfield. He hasn't had it.

So this is interesting. Adam Schefter has a column today and I'm going to read you two paragraphs in the column. At least one team does not have a first round grade on any of the quarterbacks in the draft. Any. The general manager of another team said there are, quote, no sure fire quarterback solutions, unquote. And the top rated passer in this class, Cam Ward, would be the seventh rated passer in last year's class. I think I'd push back on that. The column continues. I don't think it's close, the general manager said. Second paragraph. Some teams and prognosticators have predicted four quarterbacks to go in round one. I think that's lunacy, but there are smart people around the league who believe there might only be one or two who go in the top 30 picks. I think Cam Ward and Shador Sanders feel like first round quarterbacks to me. Jalen Milroe, Two mechanical first round Jackson Dart too inconsistent for my taste in the first round. I. And I like, you know, I like Kyle McCord at Syracuse. He's probably a late second, mid third round guy. So the thing about Cam Ward, so he was a zero star recruit, maybe a little smaller, good arm, little smaller. I watched him at Washington State and he is small. So if he looks small in college, he's going to look even smaller in the pros. We saw that with Bryce Young. He's small, he's not ideal. I think he's got a really good arm and I think Miami's got good players. Not all world players. They don't have Georgia Bama, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame talent. They don't. They have good players. So I think he's a playmaker. I think he's got some hero ball in him. I think he would not have gone over Caleb Williams, he would not have gone over Jaden Daniels. I would not have drafted him over Drake May. I think I would have drafted him over J.J. mcCarthy of Michigan. I think he and Bo Nicks.
Jalen Hurts
I think Panics goes ahead of him.
Paul Pierce
I think Panics goes ahead. I think he's more electric than Bo Nicks and I think he's a better thrower than J.J. mcCarthy. So I don't think he would be seven. But one GM, according to Adam Schefter, said it wasn't necessarily close. So it's interesting now we had, you know, a guy that I lean on a year before the draft. Greg Cosell always gives me a breakdown, does this every year. He gives me, he sends it to me, a breakdown of the quarterbacks who will go next year. So like he was telling me about Josh Allen going into Josh Allen's final year, he goes watch the kid at Wyoming. He's an insane talent, but he's wild and out of control. A player that, you know, there are some players like Jalen Milroad, Alabama. Great body, great athlete, great kid, great family. Really inconsistent and mechanical. He's not ready to play now, but if you gave him Sean McVeigh for three years, maybe it's like I like a lot about Melro, but you can see when he throws it, he looks like an athlete throwing a ball. He didn't look like a quarterback. He's not real fluid and he was very inconsistent. But he is so athletic and this happens in the NFL that he could run for first downs, a lot of them his first two years in the league. But I don't think he's ready to play in the NFL and he has not shown an ability to be a great like third down, fourth down quarterback like Jaden Daniels or a great two minute drill quarterback. He didn't show that in college. So, you know, I don't think he's ever going to be a great quarterback. Cam Ward, to me he's going to be small and he's a little bit of hero ball, but he's got a big time arm, he's a big time playmaker. And Tennessee, let's be honest, they've had a lot of Will Levis, Ryan Tannehill, they just need some pop. And again, it's not a division with Herbert, Sean Payton, Mahomes and Andy Reid, it's the AFC South. CJ Stroud's a mile better right now looks like than anybody else at quarterback.
Jalen Hurts
Yeah, the problem with Tennessee is the roster. Colin is so bare. It is so bad. I had someone tell me, someone I really trust. Basically this is the worst roster in 20 years. So they just don't have a lot. They, you look, they need a position. They, they need to upgrade almost every position. So if you're the Titans and you draft Cam Ward 1, which we all expect, you better hit on offensive line, on weaponry to surround him with the type of talent that he needs. To me, you go Cam Ward one, then you get a receiver two, maybe another one. Three, there's so much there. Whereas even someone, someone like the Giants, if they go Shador 3, they still have other weapons, they have other pieces. At least the Titans have none of that.
Paul Pierce
That's my Greg Cosell like him. I trust Greg. Greg liked him, you know, and Greg was funny. Greg didn't love Trevor Lawrence out of Clemson really? Oh, forever. He kept saying, colin, he's not as good as you think. I remember when Trevor Lawrence and Josh Allen were in and it was, it was Josh Allen early. He said this like five years ago. He goes, josh Allen's a much better quarterback than Trevor Lawrence. The difference is you watch Trevor Lawrence win a natty play at Clemson. This kid played with Wyoming players. So Cosell does not love all the hyped up quarterbacks. I was never a huge fan of Deshaun Watson out of college. I didn't think he was a natural thrower of the football at Clemson. I thought he was a great athlete, but I never thought he was a pretty thrower better than Milroe. But Milroe, it feels hard.
Jalen Hurts
Milro is one of the best athletes to come in at quarterback that we've ever seen though. So I thought your point earlier was really smart. When you said with the rams, give him two, three years of McVeigh.
Paul Pierce
Yeah, maybe a different outcome. That's a blank canvas Jackson Dart to me. If Jackson dart went to, you know, McVeigh, McVeigh gets him like with their first pick and he does not play a snap of, you know, profound football for two years and then year three. Yeah, I'm going to tell you he's going to be a pretty good player. Not great. But that's a different outcome than going to New Orleans and starting tomorrow or starting in September, that's a totally different outcome. The Titans, though, In the last 10 seasons, think about this brutal 26 in passing touchdowns. So you can see Tennessee saying, we thought we had it with Mariota. Ryan Tannehill got us a number one seed. Will Levis, you know, sec. You could see Tennessee saying also they have an offensive coach and you know, Callahan's the O line coach. You could just say them, we just want to be competent at quarterback and we think we can coach Cam Ward to be competent. Plus so I if you're going to reach reach at quarterback, sure that Tennessee has got to get that position eventually. Right? Chicago, go hire Ben Johnson. You got to get Caleb Williams. Right. I get it. All right, good stuff. Monday show flied by Nick Wright, Chris Broussard, Kevin Wilds around the corner on a Monday. A fun Monday. Lot of NBA playoff stuff to talk about, plus the NFL draft. It's the Herd.
