Now let's get this party started.
Jason McIntyre
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Well, Joel Klatt, he's the voice of college football here and we have a crazy weekend. Indiana. Notre Dame starts on Friday. Marcus Freeman just signed an extension, which doesn't surprise me because he's really good. There was rumors about the Bears job. I want to go to Texas though. So the last three weeks I've watched them and I'd make an argument Arch Manning is a better fit at quarterback. I don't like going into a playoff and not loving your quarterback. It feels like they've gotten conservative to me when I watch him and I see all that five star talent, I see it on defense, I don't see it on offense. Is there any chance if Texas struggled in the first half and Clemson's got a real defense, they just go with Arch and they just say it's been bad for a month. I mean, do you think Stark would do that?
Joel Klatt
He did it against Georgia in that first matchup.
Jason McIntyre
Right.
Joel Klatt
Colin. You know, so like, I think that there are certainly elements of Texas's offense that I believe in more. If Arch is on the field, he's much more mobile than when you.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, that's easy.
Joel Klatt
And right now he changes the pace of. Of his throws to a different degree. One of the things, and I know this is a small thing, but with, with yours in there, they have certainly regressed offensively. In fact, you know, for their last seven games, they've scored 20 points or less.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah.
Joel Klatt
And that's not what you would expect from a Steve Sarkeesian offense. And one of the things that has happened is that as. As yours became more immobile with that banged up ankle, then the. The level of stress on just the passing game and his ability to throw guys open went way up. And he doesn't really do that. He doesn't change the pace on his throws all that much. He's a float thrower. He throws with touch almost all the time. He doesn't necessarily drive into tight windows and really throw guys open. So because of that, there's a ton of stress on Steve Sarkeesian to scheme guys open for him.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah.
Joel Klatt
And when he faces good defenses, that's, that's tough. So I do think that there's a little bit of an element. Remember the two of Jalen hurts Alabama team.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah.
Joel Klatt
Remember Nick Saban? He was toying around with, hey, are we going to be better with two to throw the football rather than Jalen in there? And then when he had to have it against Georgia in the national championship game, he pulled the trigger. I just wonder to myself, like, if they were struggling, how short is that leash on Quinn yours? I think it would be pretty short.
Jason McIntyre
Okay. So Urban Meyer came on yesterday and he said basically Ohio State is going to have to throw their offensive lines. Not going to create openings against the SEC line. It's not. And all of a sudden, I look at the weather, it's 13 degrees. They lost confidence of Will Howard in the game against Michigan. I think Tennessee's got a better defense than Michigan, but they both have great D lines. I don't know. J. Mac thinks that they're going to roll. I think this is a. I think this puppy's got 2320 written all over it. I mean, what do you think it's going to look like? What's this game going to look like? Buckeyes. Vols.
Joel Klatt
So history would suggest that when. When Ryan Day has. Has a Poor showing that he fixes it pretty quickly. And I go back to this, like in 2019, remember they lost the Clemson in that game against Trevor Lawrence and then the next year he got another shot at Clemson. They dropped, what was it like 49 on them in that game. In 2020, in the playoff with Justin Field, they lose to Michigan, they go to the Rose bowl, face Utah, they dropped 48 on Utah, that was 2021. In 2022, they lose to Michigan, still get into the playoff, they go face Georgia, they put 41 on that Georgia team, albeit in a loss. And so like to me, when, when Ryan gets put into a corner and his offenses get put into a corner and they don't play as well as they should, he's got a little bit of a time to evaluate that. He usually comes out swinging. And there is no doubt they have been even self. Admittedly, their game plan against Michigan was totally wrong. Chip Kelly talked about it. So I fully expect Ohio State to come out and play a game in space in the passing game and try to utilize their weapons. I really do. I don't know if they have to throw the ball down the field as much as they need to play the game in space. If they do that, they're going to score some points, there's no doubt because they're too talented not to. The game plan against Michigan was, was wildly conservative. I think that that game and opponent is more inside of their heads than anything else. So I'm actually going to go opposite of you. I think Ohio State comes out and plays really well offensively, loose offensively and aggressive offensively. And I think that they're going to score quite a few points because of it.
Jason McIntyre
So is Indiana a fraud like against Ohio State and beat up on the Rutgers of the world or can they play with Notre Dame?
Joel Klatt
Well, I mean, look at it this way. Notre Dame and Indiana are actually fairly similar in that they both played very weak schedules and they beat up on those weak schedules. Now it just so happened that Indiana played one great team. They lost to that one great team on the road. Notre Dame lost in Northern Illinois at home. And. And so I think when you look at this game, I think Indiana's got a great shot. Of all the games, this is the one that, that we could see an upset. I actually think I even picked an upset. I think Indiana could absolutely win this game. And the one reason is, is because they're strong right where you have to be strong in order to beat Notre Dame. And that's specifically the run defense Their run defense is very unique. First of all, from a schematic standpoint, they don't just force their defensive linemen to take one gap and stay in that area. They let them kind of play. And then the linebackers fit opposite. And it's because they have all these guys from JMU that played for their coordinator at JMU that they know this defense. It's a unique style of defense and they're the number one rushing defense in the country. Well, if you can force the game onto the shoulder of Riley Leonard and the passing game, then I like your chances if you're Indiana, because here's the thing. Curtis Rourke is a better quarterback than Riley Leonard. If you get into a situation where you just have to trust the quarterbacks and the offenses, I would trust Indiana specifically because of that issue with the run defense against Notre Dame's run offense. The one thing that I will say, though, is that I don't think Indiana has seen a run game like Notre Dame's at all. At all. So it won't surprise me at all if they struggle actually stopping the run. But this is the one game that I would say that the underdog has a good chance to win.
Jason McIntyre
Okay, two. Two things here we have to address. Everybody now is selling their stock on Lincoln Riley and I said this because it's a high profile program. People go, oh, they lost all these five star guys. None of them were as good as people thought. Actually, their best receivers.
Joel Klatt
I totally disagree. Zachariah Branch was. He's fast, an electric player.
Jason McIntyre
Fast, electric player. Electric. And my take is, then why couldn't they get him the ball? I mean, it was. Lemon was the better receiver.
Joel Klatt
You have to ask your coach about that. Colin, do you think they're done responsibility?
Jason McIntyre
Well, I mean, if. If I think he's over, I think he's a classic, great YouTube highlighter. And you get him in the program and it's like he's a. He's a return man. I don't know. I mean, I watch their other four star guys and they are all lighting it up and I'm like, the five star guy is not that good. I mean, I don't know.
Joel Klatt
When you lose Deuce and you lose Kyron Hudson, like they've got a major problem. You can explain it away all you want. No, no, no. They've. They've got a major problem on their hands. The fact is, is that if you were to sit here three and four years ago, five years ago, before nil really became a thing and you were to Say, like, hey, at some point in college football's future, you're going to have unlimited free agency, unlimited nil. And so players can choose where to go. They can choose what brands they want to play for, in what markets they want to play in them. You would have thought to yourself, oh, my gosh, that is heaven for usc. And here we are. And USC right now is spiraling. And that's. That is a dangerous place to be because when you lose momentum, it's almost impossible to get it back. One of the few examples that I've ever seen in college football history where a coach and a program lost total momentum and got it back to the point where they could go win the national championship was Michigan. Just a couple of years ago in the COVID year, they wanted to fire Jim Harbaugh, and all of a sudden it was this miraculous turnaround into the point where they ended up winning a national championship. Can it happen? Yes. But I got to tell you, like, I'm worried for USC right now.
Jason McIntyre
Wow. Well, I've always been a little more optimistic. Very optimistic personality.
Joel Klatt
Well, but here's the problem. Their roster is going to be less talented next year than it was this year. And Colin, they lost to Maryland and to Minnesota.
Jason McIntyre
That's true.
Joel Klatt
So if you're telling me their roster is going to be worse from a talent perspective, how can you expect their team to be better from a record perspective?
Jason McIntyre
Well, I don't think the guys they're losing are as good as you think. That star system, I don't know. I'm not big into that. I'm into. I'm in a G. That is.
Joel Klatt
That is a wild take of yours. I gotta tell you, man. That is.
Jason McIntyre
That is okay.
Joel Klatt
That is some optimism right there. You are an optimist.
Jason McIntyre
I really am. So Urban meyer said yesterday, 10 years ago, Belichick would have struggled in college, but now it's all negotiating. You don't have to go knock on doors.
Joel Klatt
Right.
Jason McIntyre
It's just all negotiating. He'll do fine. What do you make of Belichick at Carolina?
Joel Klatt
I totally agree with Urban Meyer. You know, it used to be that. That in college football, it was about relationships and development in a lot of senses. And you had to sell the ability of that player to go to your place and win championships and then go to the National Football League. That's what recruiting was. It was relationships, NFL national championships. And it was so few programs that could dominate those arenas. Okay.
Colin Cowherd
And.
Joel Klatt
And could really convince guys that, like, you have to come here if you want to Win a national championship. You have to come here, look at our lineage of players in the National Football League, okay? And now it's different. It's very different. Now you've got to evaluate talent and you've got to do it well because of the transfer portal and recruiting. Well, I would argue that Bill Belichick knows what he's doing as far as evaluating talent. Then you've got to value that talent. And that's what the difference is now as opposed to in the past, is that you've got to value that with the rev share and understand what you're going to pay these guys. And you can't overpay for guys that are not going to contribute. You just can't. And so I think his background is going to pay huge dividends in terms of that. I also believe that the top of college football is flatter than it's ever been as far as parity is going. And so in game situational, coaching is becoming much more important than it was four and five years ago. That's going to be a big feather in Bill Belichick's hat. And the last thing that I would say is that right now there are so many different paths to success in college football as opposed to seven years ago in the height of the 14 playoff call and you had to be Georgia or Alabama or Ohio State or Clemson because those are the only teams that could dominate those areas that I was talking about previous. Now look at these. Four of the 12 teams in the College Football Playoff are Indiana, with a first year head coach and transfers from JMU. Kenny Dillingham at Arizona State was picked to finish 16th in the Big 12. You've got SMU which is paying to be in the ACC and not collecting a rev share. Rhett Lashley brings in all these guys from his time at Miami and you've got Boise State. So the number of ways to get to the top end of college football and define yourself as successful is, is there's just more paths to that now. And so I fully expect Bill Belichick to work out at North Carolina one more herd.
Jason McIntyre

That's what the Duck is quacking about. Helping cover gaps. So like, this is how I think of Aflac. Let's say you have an All Pro linebacker. Anytime there's a gap in the defensive line, you know he's going to fill it, no problem because he's an all pro. Aflac does the same thing. If there's a gap in your health insurance, Aflac wants to better protect you by helping close the gap. You're sick, you're injured. Aflac can pay cash to help fill the gaps your health insurance can leave behind. You can use the cash, put it towards whatever you need. Rent, mortgage payments, medical bills. You think Notre Dame, Indiana is close, but potential blowout. So I can't wait. I'm very excited. I am. I feel I've got.
Joel Klatt
I've got a close game in Texas. Clemson.
Jason McIntyre
Oh, you.
Joel Klatt
I think I. If I was a betting man, I would take the points with Clemson because I don't think Texas is going to be able to score 30 or more. And then I'm just like the one game I think could get away from somebody would be Penn State. Smu. Smu. The two best teams they faced all year, they lost. Meanwhile, Penn State is like knocking on the door of that elite status in our sport.
Jason McIntyre
All right, good seeing you. Clap, Joel, clap.
Joel Klatt
It's great to see you. Great to see you. I need some of that optimism rubbing off. You've got some sort of, like, holiday cheer going on.
Jason McIntyre
J. Mac's been saying it all day. I just, you know what? I'm just very grateful. Just I got trees all around me and, you know, just very, very look at you.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Joel Klatt
I tell you What? I'm grateful that you have me on. I really am.
Jason McIntyre
I feel the same way.
Joel Klatt
Great to see you, my man.
Jason McIntyre
Great to see you, buddy. J. Mac, from that point, it's. I don't know if you can top it, that kind of cheer and that kind of holiday vibe. J. Mac, with the news. No, no, no.
Colin Cowherd
Turn on the news.
Jason McIntyre
This is the Herdline news.
Colin Cowherd
I thought Klatt might give me some credit for your holiday cheer. My just positivity and great vibes rubbing off on you. But I guess.
Jason McIntyre
Well, I think you've always had. You're a glass half full guy. No, I think you're kind of. You like to stir things up.
Colin Cowherd
That's fun.
Jason McIntyre
La provocateur.
Colin Cowherd
Stop it. All right, let's go to the Kansas City Chiefs. So we'll start with the good news. Patrick Mahomes was just announced moments ago. He will be starting. According to Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes starting Hollywood Brown is going to play. But there is some not great news, Colin. And that. That's Travis Kelce who's kind of struggling. He has set a career low in receiving yards per game, yards per catch and touchdowns. How are they a one loss team with Travis Kelce playing so poorly? He is 35 years old. We got a. We got a little screen of the stats of.
Jason McIntyre
I think they're trying. I think they're trying to give Noah Gray touches. I think they're trying to get Xavier Worthy involved. I'm the believer that they could use him more. But they're trying to get all these other young players ready because they want to have multiple dimensions to their offense and they know Kelsey's great, he'll show.
Colin Cowherd
Up in the playoffs.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. So I, I think they're just trying to get all these young guys, Gray and Worthy, they just want to get all these guys worked in. When they get to the playoffs, they're going back to their heater. They're going back to Kelsey.
Colin Cowherd
You don't have any concerns?
Jason McIntyre
I don't. I don't.
Colin Cowherd
In the tooth.
Jason McIntyre
I thought. No. Hey, you go to end a Gronk's career. He. He was still money in the big games. You go to Kelsey's career last year, playoffs. I. It's just one of those things is Travis Kelce looks at this sport. He not worry about November Will. What they got to worry about is Noah Gray. Can you trust him? When do you find that out? You don't find that out in January. You find that out in September, October, November.
Colin Cowherd
So Travis Kelce treated the regular Season like the NBA players do. I can, I can have. Have.
Jason McIntyre
Except he's available.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, you got to play like what, 50 snaps? Come on. Nothing versus a full NBA game. Yeah. What their. Coward. Look at that smirk. He's a little caught off guard. All right, let's go to the next story and. Wow, Colin, look at this. Magic Johnson was on speak yesterday. I can't believe I didn't see him. That was my favorite player growing up, man. I was a huge Magic fan. He has now chimed in on what's wrong with the NBA. And here's his take on why NBA ratings are false.
Joel Klatt
Well, I knew Larry Bird was coming for me.
Colin Cowherd
Right, Right.
Joel Klatt
You see, that's it. And if we, if we line it up now, right, you put on that green, I put on that purple.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, he ain't playing. Come on, man. Right.
Joel Klatt
And that's what it, it's got to.
Jason McIntyre
Get back to that.
Joel Klatt
And it's a reason why the, the number of viewerships are going down. And these guys better wake up and say, hey man, we got to change this. And also low management.
Jason McIntyre
The guys gotta play.
Joel Klatt
They gotta play, they gotta play. We took pride in playing. Yes, 82 games like I wanted to. Toe hurting, knee, ear, finger.
Colin Cowherd
Like I still want to be. I'm, I'm out there.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, I've been. I, I think. I, I don't understand. The NBA commissioner Adam Silver has not put his foot down on load management. I just, I don't get it.
Colin Cowherd
That's an.
Jason McIntyre
It's not baseball. It's not 162 games and it's not a sport where you have like arm injuries. Like, you understand when a guy misses a start in Major League Baseball.
Colin Cowherd
You're comparing baseball to basketball?
Jason McIntyre
No. Baseball is more interesting these days.
Colin Cowherd
Maybe, Maybe it is more interesting. I'm just saying from a, from a playing perspective, you're swinging the bat. You get three or four at bats a game and pitchers making a couple plays. Here's the other problem. And I'll go back to my inside the NBA take. These guys have made, made the rings culture. So it's everything. Rings are everything. Who cares what you do in November or December or January. It doesn't matter. So take those days off and be fresh for the playoffs. That's the rings culture that is instilled by some of these guys on inside the NBA. That's all Barkley and Shaq talk about. And Colin, I'll be honest, I, I think it's great that you know, what's it say? Sga Is playing so great. They don't have Chad Holgren. And you know what? It's not the end of the world. They lost the NBA cup because they're going to be at full strength in the playoffs. Remember, this was your pick to go to the finals, wasn't it?
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, I got. I got Boston beating OKC in the finals. Oh, why? Listen, I. I'll watch.
Colin Cowherd
And this whole rivalry thing, Magic, come on. Do you remember when the Lakers were playing the Celtics? There were like, what, five channels on television, no smartphones, no streaming. There's a totally different era. Like, oh, it's just so exhausting getting in this discussion, really, honestly. 80s NBA. Do you remember it? There was maybe one game on TV a week, Colin. Maybe.
Jason McIntyre
Well, the NFL's got games on every day but Tuesday and their ratings keep going up.
Colin Cowherd
Well, they do, but there's only 17 of them during the season. You know, once a week you say, jason, can you commit to Sundays? But it's 17.
Jason McIntyre
But it's always been once a week.
Colin Cowherd
It has now. They haven't had as much Thursday night.
Jason McIntyre
And then as the NFL has expanded, their ratings keep going up. Why? Because the game has remained viable, electric and dynamic due to rule changes to help offense. The NBA has more games on TV like the NFL, and the ratings are plummeting because it's a ditto. It's carbon copy. Everybody plays the exact same style.
Colin Cowherd
So when you look at all these.
Jason McIntyre
Sports have more games.
Colin Cowherd
When you tell the wife, hey, football season, I need four months every Sunday. I got a lock in. Yeah, that's not a big deal. Do you know what four months is of the NBA season that gets you to, like, the all star break?
Jason McIntyre
But that was half the season. So just think about it. Every sport has more games on TV than 20 years ago. All of them. Why is football the only one skyrocketing up? Well, there's only one game a week. That was the case 30 years ago.
Colin Cowherd
But it was. Football wasn't on top 30 years ago, by the way. Back in, like, the 80s. It was not the rating juggernaut. It was.
Jason McIntyre
Well, it was.
Colin Cowherd
It was still good, but it wasn't like a machine like it is now.
Jason McIntyre
It was still great. It wasn't as dominant.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Jason McIntyre
So, but I mean, the argument. There's only one game a week. That's always been the case. We only had one game a week. Why? There's a lot of TV ratings going up and the NBAs are going backwards. Baseballs aren't going backwards. Football's not college football, girls, women's basketball.
Colin Cowherd
You think gambling in the last five years has helped NFL or what?
Jason McIntyre
I think it's helped all sports, NFL more than anything.
Colin Cowherd
Some of those handles are massive. Final story Colin Mike Evans, one of the most underappreciated receivers in NFL history. Can I go there? He's had 10 straight seasons over a thousand yards receiving. Missed a few games this year with a hammy. But his quarterback, Baker Mayfield says he wants Mike to get 11 straight thousand yard seasons.
Jason McIntyre
I'm thinking about it more than Mike is. He helped himself out though, put a little chunk into it. But yeah, it's all in all winning is the most important part. But he's a huge part of this offense and so he makes a huge difference in, you know, the explosive aspect of this offense. So trying to get the ball some way somehow, but not forcing it. Now they're going to be a tough out. I like them.
Colin Cowherd
Mike Evans is a Hall of Famer, right?
Jason McIntyre
Absolutely.
Colin Cowherd
Just, just making sure we're on this. It's good to see when we agree on stuff. I'm looking at his career, man. Oh, he's, I mean he's, he's had, he's only 31. He's at J Miss, at COR. Quarterback Brady Baker.
Jason McIntyre
No, he's had. And that's another reason I love him. He's had multiple quarterbacks. J. Mac with the news well, that's the news and thanks for stopping by the Herd Lie News. Fdic hey, y'all know the Aflac commercials, right? With the famous Duck and the coaches. Great commercials. But did you know that Aflac is a leader in supplemental insurance? It's completely up to you. Look, life can be tough. Fortunately, Aflac is tougher. I mean, we're talking middle linebacker tough. Today, it's a special day of football Saturday on Fox. Catch the next chapter in a bitter historical rivalry as Russell Wilson and the Steelers take on Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. It all kicks off Saturday at 4 Eastern on Fox.
Jason McIntyre
Okay, so a lot of people talk, but what do your actions lead me to believe? So JMac is a Chiefs hater. He's very critical of the Chiefs, but I thought today we would take the 14 playoff quarterbacks. If the playoffs started today. Now, some may get bumped out, not many. It's getting closer and closer. When Denver beats the Colts. You're getting closer and closer. If the Chargers beat Denver tonight, I kind of feel like the AFC is locked in. So these are the 14 quarterbacks. So a playoff game tomorrow, in order. I'll let you start. You're very critical of Mahomes. I believe the word you use is lucky.
Colin Cowherd
So generous.
Jason McIntyre
So you. You do. We gonna go in the quarterbacks available. We're doing a quarterback draft for playoff success. You go first. Who would you take out of all these great quarters?
Colin Cowherd
Well, that's so kind of you. What? You're in the holiday spirit.
Jason McIntyre
No, I'm gonna. I'm gonna put you to the test because I would take Mahomes without even blinking the guy at 1. He's 15 and 3.
Colin Cowherd
I don't care about 15. 3. I care about this year.
Jason McIntyre
Okay, go ahead.
Colin Cowherd
You picked number one pick in the quarterback draft. Jason McIntyre selects Josh Allen, quarterback of the Buffalo Bills. Who's been the best quarterback by a mile this season in the league? I mean, I've got a bunch of stats by the way, to win the MVP. He's minus 900. Okay. You betting that 900 bucks to win 100? I know the playoffs. He has not historically been awesome, but who cares? I'm talking about this year and this Buffalo offense. Colin with Cook Kincaid, Keon Coleman's back. They got so many weapons. And Josh Allen is the ultimate chess piece. He's the number one pick, hands down.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, I'm going to take the guy who's 15 and 3 and is the greatest quarterback postseason record wise, we've ever seen. So far. I'm going to take Patrick Mahomes in 18 career playoff games, 46 touchdowns, only nine turnovers. And again, that's against playing like against Belichick and Buffalo. I'm gonna go Mahomes.
Colin Cowherd
This is tough because I really like Lamar Jackson a lot. But with the second pick in the draft, I'm going with Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles. I think they're. We're headed toward a Bills Eagles Super Bowl. So I get both quarterbacks that are going to be in the super bowl this year. Now listen, Hertz has been up and down a little bit, obviously. Saquon, you know, up and down. I just looked at the Eagles injury report for this week. It ain't great, but we're talking about the playoffs. Eagles still could get the number one seed in the Buy they could overtake Detroit. Chances are slim, but it could happen. And I just love everything about Jalen. Hurts running, passing, A.J. brown healthy.
Jason McIntyre
I'm going to take Matt Stafford who's on an absolute heater. 10 touchdowns, no turnovers last five games. And the fact that the offensive line is healthy. Kyron Williams, Puka Nukua, COOPER Kopp, Sean McVeigh. I'm taking Matt Stafford. I have Patrick Mahomes and Matt Stafford. Of our last three Super Bowls, those are the three quarterbacks that have won all the Super Bowls. I'll have Mahomes and Stafford. By the way, we're taking our time on this, but that's my second. So we got four of them off the board. Who's number five?
Colin Cowherd
Boy, you're living in the past number five. This feels almost too easy.
Jason McIntyre
I gotta go.
Colin Cowherd
Lamar Jackson, who's the second best quarterback in the league this year and after Josh Allen again. I know the historic playoff issues with Lamar. I'm thinking this year, this is a this year draft. Lamar has been fantastic. Ravens are going to be live, trust me. I think I, I talked to some people. It sounds like this whole Derrick Henry struggling. They're saving Henry. Lamar hasn't really been unlocked running the ball a lot. I would not shock me if the Ravens are in the AFC championship.
Jason McIntyre
I'll take Jordan Love, who again, excellent O line, multiple weapons, one of the healthier teams in the league. 4th most passing touchdowns in the NFL the last two years with missing a month because of injuries. I think Jordan Loves got a great coach, got a power run game, has the best collection of young tight end receiver talent. I take Jordan Love, so I want.
Colin Cowherd
To, I want to steal your guy Bo Nix, but, but, but there's no way on earth I could draft him this high. I'm going to go a little bit. A little. Let's get a little crazy. Let's go with Baker Mayfield again this year. Baker lights out. Remember Godwin got hurt. Everybody sold their buck stock. Holy cow. Baker Mayfield's been tremendous with Mike Evans, that three headed running back game. Even the tight end Kate Otten showed well. Yeah, listen, I know it's not gonna be popular. You guys can laugh all you want, but the way Baker's playing right now, I think Tampa's gonna be dangerous in the nfc.
Jason McIntyre
I'm gonna take Jared Goff with that great offensive line. Listen, Goff has played a lot of playoff games. Eight. And he's 500. So he has played eight playoff games. I think that experience matters. I like Darnold he's never had a playoff start and they led the Rams not only to a Super bowl, he lost to the Patriots. I think Goff is overlooked. The fact that you take Baker over golf in a playoff game. Interesting. So we got nine guys off the board.
Colin Cowherd
Eight or nine guys, you know, who won head to head this year, right in that game. Listen, I love Justin Herbert as much as the next guy. I don't know about their chances. If they lose this weekend, they're going to be facing the Bills or Chiefs.
Jason McIntyre
In the first round.
Colin Cowherd
That's a loss. So I am going to go a little surprise here and go with Sam Darnold Sliggin Sammy D. Only because I think the Vikings are going to have a shot in the NFC and I think Darnold can make a run. Colin, this kid is lights out indoors. You know, we'll see what happens when he goes outdoors. But I like everything I've seen from Darn a lot. I saw some people saying, hey, fringe MVP votes. Is he going to be the most sought after quarterback in free agency? It's all because he's been awesome this year.
Jason McIntyre
I'll take Justin Herbert, who has gone 11 straight games at one point this year without an interception. I think the loss of J.K. dobbins has hurt him significantly. But you're talking about. I mean, let's be honest. We both think he's a top six quarterback in the league and we're 10 quarterbacks into this thing.
Colin Cowherd
That's a steal.
Jason McIntyre
I get Harbaugh Slater at left tackle. I tend to think lad McConkey's pretty special. By the way, Hayden Hurst activated tonight. Good tight end. I'll take the Chargers tonight to win and I'll take Justin Herbert.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, that may be a whiff by me on that one. I'll go Jaden Daniels, Washington. I like this kid. I know they kind of play with their food against the Saints, but man, this kid comes out strong start to games. Look what they've been doing first quarter recently. Jaden Daniels would be my guy there next up on the board.
Jason McIntyre
I would take CJ Stroud again, not a lot of playoff. You know, he's one and one career in the playoffs, so he's been there before. Bo Nicks hasn't. I think C.J. stroud's good. It's a hard team for me to figure out. They beat the Bills earlier this season. They're. They dominated the Dolphins. I never know quite what I'm getting. But I would take CJ Stroud, my final pick.
Colin Cowherd
I Believe we're down to. I only see two names here and I'm going to have to go with my doppelganger, Russell Wilson. Yes, Russell Wilson. Listen, once he gets Pickens back and it looks like Pickens is slaves to play, this is a dangerous Russell Wilson. Him and Arthur Smith really vibing. They just need Pickens and to invigorate the deep ball. I'll go Russell Wilson with my final take.
Jason McIntyre
I'll take Bo Nix. And something interesting about Bo Nix that doesn't get discussed. Do you know how he has the sixth most rushing attempts this year? He runs a. A lot. And he's. He's really a quick, twitchy, athletic kid, so. And, and again, Sean Payton is part of the reason I like him. So let's look at J. Mac's picks and my picks and see. See who got the better crop of quarterbacks. Obviously, I get Mahomes, so I feel pretty good about that.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I feel pretty great having Josh Allen.
Jason McIntyre
I get the Mahomes. Stafford Love Goff, Herbert Stroud, Bo Nick.
Colin Cowherd
You know what would make this interesting is one of the producers said, why don't we tally playoff victories to see at the end of the postseason how things stack up. I have a feeling I am.
Jason McIntyre
I only surprise here that you went Jalen hurts your second quarterback.
Colin Cowherd
What do you mean? Eagles. You had them, didn't you? Have them number one.
Jason McIntyre
No, no. On the hurt hierarchy, I. I like them. But if they win in the playoffs, SAQUON Barkley and A.J. brown, in my opinion, will have to be substantial.
Colin Cowherd
You know who gets in the ball, right? Jalen hurts, hands it off to them and throws it to them. He's the, he's the guy down on Jalen. Now listen, we all love staff.
Jason McIntyre
I can't believe I got Justin Herbert as the 10th quarterback taken.
Colin Cowherd
Well, and he's going to have Dobbins at that point. But by the way, on Stafford, they might not even make the playoffs. And you took him second.
Jason McIntyre
I think he's pretty good.
Colin Cowherd
If the jets beat him, this, my.
Jason McIntyre
Sources are telling me Matt Stafford is good.
Colin Cowherd

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Hour 3: Playoff QB Draft
Release Date: December 19, 2024
Introduction
In the third hour of "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," hosted by iHeartPodcasts and The Volume, Colin Cowherd, alongside co-hosts Jason McIntyre and Joel Klatt, delves deep into the intricacies of the upcoming football playoffs. The episode primarily focuses on a creative segment called the "Playoff Quarterback Draft," where the hosts select and analyze the top quarterbacks poised to make significant impacts in the postseason. Beyond the draft, the discussion weaves through various college football narratives, coaching strategies, and the evolving landscape of the sport.
College Football Analysis
The episode kicks off with a robust discussion on several college football teams and their prospects in the upcoming playoffs. Joel Klatt provides insights into Indiana's performance against Notre Dame, highlighting Indiana's strong run defense as a potential game-changer.
Joel Klatt [08:36]: "Indiana's got a great shot against Notre Dame. Their run defense is the number one rushing defense in the country, which is exactly what you need to stop Notre Dame's run-heavy offense."
Jason McIntyre expresses optimism about USC's future despite recent setbacks, comparing their situation to Michigan's miraculous turnaround in previous years.
Jason McIntyre [12:31]: "I'm worried for USC right now. Their roster is going to be less talented next year, and they've lost momentum. It's almost impossible to get it back once you lose it."
The hosts also touch upon coaching strategies, specifically discussing Lincoln Riley's adaptation to the modern game amidst the challenges posed by the transfer portal and NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) regulations.
Joel Klatt [15:51]: "Bill Belichick knows what he's doing with talent evaluation. The top of college football is flatter than ever, and coaching is becoming more situationally important."
Impact of Players and Coaches
The conversation shifts to the influence of key players and coaching decisions on team performances. Colin Cowherd highlights the resilience of coaches like Ryan Day and their ability to adapt game plans under pressure.
Joel Klatt [07:01]: "When Ryan Day is put into a corner, he evaluates and comes out swinging. Ohio State has the talent to fix any conservative game plans they've implemented."
Jason McIntyre discusses the evolving role of players in college football, emphasizing the importance of versatile quarterbacks in the playoff landscape.
Jason McIntyre [13:06]: "Urban Meyer was right about Belichick's adaptability. In college football now, it's all about negotiating talent value, and coaches like Belichick excel at this."
Playoff Quarterback Draft
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to the "Playoff Quarterback Draft," where Colin Cowherd and Jason McIntyre select quarterbacks they believe will lead their teams to playoff success. The segment is both analytical and competitive, showcasing each host's strategic thinking.
First Round Picks:
Jason McIntyre: Selects Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, praising his statistical performance and leadership.
Jason McIntyre [37:36]: "Josh Allen is the ultimate chess piece. He's the number one pick, hands down."
Colin Cowherd: Chooses Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles, highlighting his dual-threat capability and supporting cast.
Colin Cowherd [38:47]: "Hurts running and passing, combined with A.J. Brown's health, makes the Eagles a formidable team in the playoffs."
Subsequent Rounds:
Jason McIntyre: Selects Matt Stafford, Jordan Love, Bo Nix, and Justin Herbert, citing their offensive lines, experience, and potential for explosive performances.
Jason McIntyre [40:48]: "Jordan Love has the best collection of young tight end receiver talent. Bo Nix is quick and athletic, making him a versatile threat."
Colin Cowherd: Picks Sam Darnold, CJ Stroud, Russell Wilson, and Bo Nix, focusing on their adaptability and game-winning potential.
Colin Cowherd [43:08]: "Russell Wilson with Pickens back is a dangerous combination. They just need to invigorate the deep ball."
Throughout the draft, the hosts debate the merits of each quarterback, considering factors like team dynamics, coaching, and individual performance trends.
NBA and Other Sports Insights
Beyond football, the hosts briefly touch upon the state of the NBA, specifically discussing Magic Johnson's critique of the league's ratings and the issue of load management.
Jason McIntyre [26:27]: "Adam Silver hasn't put his foot down on load management. It's not baseball with 162 games; it's basketball where player management is crucial."
Colin Cowherd [26:09]: "NBA has made rings culture everything. Teams take days off to stay fresh for the playoffs, which is detrimental to regular season viewership."
Insights and Conclusions
The episode wraps up with a reflection on the dynamic nature of sports, emphasizing the importance of adaptability in both players and coaches. The "Playoff Quarterback Draft" serves as a testament to the unpredictable and strategic elements that define the postseason. Colin Cowherd and Jason McIntyre's competitive drafting not only highlights their insights into player performances but also sets the stage for potential future discussions on playoff outcomes.
The hosts conclude with an optimistic outlook on the playoffs, acknowledging the blend of veteran leadership and emerging talent that could lead to unexpected triumphs.
Notable Quotes
Jason McIntyre [37:36]: "Josh Allen is the ultimate chess piece. He's the number one pick, hands down."
Joel Klatt [08:36]: "Indiana's got a great shot against Notre Dame. Their run defense is the number one rushing defense in the country, which is exactly what you need to stop Notre Dame's run-heavy offense."
