Now let's get this you're Listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Colin Cowherd
Well, he was the first person. It was on Monday night during the game that Jordan Schultz broke the story that Jerry had contacted Deion Sanders. Ed Werder advanced the story today that Dion would take the job. So let's, let's get down to the skinny here. Werder knows what he's doing. Did Jerry get a hold of Dion on your Monday report? Okay, so that's how it initiated.
Adnan Virk
Yeah. So what happened was during that week long process in limbo with Mike McCarthy, Jerry's now thinking I might need to think about a viable candidate moving forward. And the name Deion Sanders gets brought up and Jerry gets excited. We know Jerry loves his flash.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Adnan Virk
If any, especially during, you know, the playoffs. This is his opportunity. We're on in the playoffs, but we could still have some fun. We can be relevant. So he calls Dion and Dion and him have a really good positive conversation. It wasn't even a formal interview. But it's the relationship over the last three decades. It's the fact that Dion, maybe more so than anyone else, understands the gravitas, the cachet, the prestige of the Dallas Cowboys. Colin. And the fact that Dion in many ways has run his program in Colorado. I know you've talked about this much like an NFL team, much like the Cowboys, they have become the focus of college football. It didn't matter that they weren't in the College Football Playoff, but I think Jerry really respected the fact that they go from four wins to nine wins. And the fact that in many ways Deion Sanders is like the type of person that can come to Dallas even without any head coaching experience and get it from day one and maybe more importantly, be able to relate to Jerry on a personal level. And that matters a lot.
Colin Cowherd
Now, Jerry doesn't historically do buyouts.
Adnan Virk
Correct.
Colin Cowherd
But he would have to do one here.
Adnan Virk
He would have to do it. It would be substantial. I don't know the exact number. I would imagine it would approach somewhere around $10 million. It'd be a big number. He would have to do it here. But they backed themselves into a corner. I talked about this. It was a self inflicted wound. If you're a Jerry Jones. I don't understand what. Over that final week with Mike McCarthy. Colin, do you not know from five years with the guy? And because they didn't fire or extend Mike McCarthy, they do not have the opportunity this week to interview an Aaron Glenn, to interview a Ben Johnson. If they are going to get those slips permitted, it will have to wait till next week. So as a result of waiting with McCarthy. The Cowboys are behind the eight ball.
Colin Cowherd
So was it McCarthy and Jerry Jones? I don't, it probably wasn't feisty. I'll tell you, I theorized.
Adnan Virk
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
McCarthy's using Don Yi as an agent.
Adnan Virk
Correct.
Colin Cowherd
And once Tom Brady's, once Vrabel signed with New England, Don Yee said, you're the number one candidate. Ask for five guaranteed years. Jerry won't give it to you.
Adnan Virk
No way. Never.
Colin Cowherd
That's right. Jerry won't give you five.
Adnan Virk
No.
Colin Cowherd
But it will allow you to interview for jobs.
Adnan Virk
Correct.
Colin Cowherd
So I, my guess was right.
Adnan Virk
I think there's, I think there's, there's something to that. He also has, Mike McCarthy does a real relationship with Mickey Loomis in New Orleans. And I think it's been made clear to me that for all intents and purposes the Chicago job, and I haven't said this publicly, but it is a two horse race between Mike McCarthy and Ben Johnson now.
Colin Cowherd
It is. It is.
Adnan Virk
I think if Brian Flores goes in and wows him, then he is still in that mix. But right Now I think McCarthy and I think Ben Johnson are the two leading candidates for Chicago and it will be really interesting to see what Chicago, what type of direction they want to go because in many ways the franchise is Caleb Williams, ideally for the next decade plus.
Colin Cowherd
So they're going to get Caleb said yesterday or the day before on Amaron St. Brown's podcast. I'd prefer an offensive coach. I can grow, totally get it. So they're going to give him that.
Adnan Virk
They're going to give him an offensive coach, I believe. But he's not going to have a say in the hiring. He's. Yes, he's the number one pick. Yes, he's the franchise, he's the cornerstone, but he's still a second year player. It's not like he's going to Kevin Warren and Ryan Poole saying give me Ben Johnson. That's he's not going to influence the decision in that capacity. But they also recognize the Bears do that. They have now had Mike Matty, Luke Gyles, Shane Waldron, all of these coaches that have not connected to their players, especially this year with Caleb and Waldron. So they're desperately in need, in my opinion, of an offensive coach, an innovator that will help get Caleb from point A to point B. And if you look at Mike McCarthy, he's not a perfect coach, but one thing he has done very well is help develop an Aaron Rodgers, help develop a Dak Prescott. Yeah, I think in theory he could do the same thing with Caleb. Although if I'm the Bears, my number one choice should be Ben Johnson because of how he's resurrected Jared Goff in the trail.
Colin Cowherd
Ben Johnson apparently is the Raiders primary target right now. Can you validate it? Have you heard it? Can we just have a Raider update?
Adnan Virk
I'm not willing to go so far as to say that Ben Johnson's the favorite with the Raiders. I know the Raiders really like him. I know that he has multiple options, including Jacksonville, which is a really good job, and the Bears. And we know he interviewed with the Patriots and the reason he did that was so that he could have a trial run knowing that it was most likely going to be Mike Vrabel. And that's exactly what happened. So he interviewed on purpose with New England first. But the Raiders are in the mix and we've talked about this. Tom Brady's a big factor there, as he should be. But if you're Ben Johnson and you have your pick of the litter, you're going to take a long look at where you can win and where you can develop. And the Raiders, although a lot to be said about that franchise historically, do not have a quarterback and they do not have the roster, quite frankly, as a Chicago or a Jacksonville.

Colin Cowherd
What is the key to the jets job? Yeah, it last year it was if you had hired a guy last year it would get along with Aaron. I don't think that's the key anymore.
Adnan Virk
Yeah, so I I have to be careful here because our I know our.
Colin Cowherd
Friend here, old jmat gets a little sensitive.
Adnan Virk
This is still a marquee job, the marquee franchise and an owner and Woody Johnson who will give you time. He gave Joe Douglas six years, Colin six years without a single playoff appearance. That's almost unheard of. So executive GM candidates are looking at the jets like if I go there, not only can I build, but I'll have the time, I'll have the Runway. And there's a lot to be said about that. But I think, I believe the jets will have a. I believe the jets will name a GM within the next week, maybe a little sooner. And then you'll have the head coach and then you can have the Aaron Rodgers discussion. But that's a fluid situation in the sense that if the new GM comes in and believes that Aaron is a viable bridge quarterback, there's a possibility that Aaron comes back next year. Most people around the league believe that Aaron is done. They do, most people. But I'm not willing to say that necessarily because if the GM comes in and says, I think Aaron with this roster can win us 10, 11 games if we keep him upright, that's possible that he comes back. I think it's also possible. And you know, there's, there are a lot of scenarios, a lot of teams that are desperate for a quarterback. I know we want to talk about Sam Darnold. I know we want to talk about where's. What direction does Pittsburgh go? Not reporting this, but hypothetically, what if someone like Aaron becomes available? Does Pittsburgh look at him. It's not just the Jets. He played well enough down the, down the stretch of the season to have another option.
Colin Cowherd
Let's, let's, let's talk about the Steelers. They're in the same predicament they were in 2022. They need a quarterback and it's a bad quarterback class. I would take a swing. I, I, My take is T.J. watt, George Pickens, two first round picks. Can you get up to Shador Sanders territory if you could? I'd think about it.
Adnan Virk
Wow, that's a colossal trade. I don't think I'm giving up T.J. watt.
Colin Cowherd
Okay.
Adnan Virk
And as good. Pickens is great, but we know that he has had issues there and that they have had to discipline him. They really believe in his talent. And you wonder whether or not they would move him. I'm not willing to go there. But to your point about your door Sanders or Cam Ward, it's considered a two quarterback draft. I wonder if someone were to slip, could Pittsburgh then move up?
Colin Cowherd
That's what I'm saying.
Adnan Virk
But I'm also thinking if I'm the Steelers, we're 4 and 2 with Justin Fields 2 and oh against playoff teams. Do we give him another look? Russell Wilson, six weeks ago they thought he could be the quarterback for the next two or three years. Willing to move off that completely.
Colin Cowherd
But I think what happened is when Russell struggled against better teams yeah. Justin Fields. You're not going to have to pay him as much, I would guess, as Russell Wilson. So why not? If we don't know if Justin's the future, let's give Justin the job next year and then next year we make our big run.
Adnan Virk
I like that.
Colin Cowherd
Because next year's quarterback draft class, I'm told, much better.
Adnan Virk
Yeah. And listen, I think the Steelers. I'm not. It's still too early and I think they're going to take their time. They're not going to be rash. They know they have an opportunity now with a very good roster. A lot of pieces there if they were to have the right quarterback. And we thought it was Russell Wilson, but they're going to take their time. That's. I would say out of all these teams looking for a quarterback, it wouldn't be surprising to me if Pittsburgh waited till the end and waited till the draft.
Colin Cowherd
Sam Darnold. I think it's fairly clear that they're going to give J.J. mcCarthy a shot. He elevated and rebooted Darnold's career. Yeah. You picked a quarterback early. You gave up picks. Go let him play. Darnold has a market. I. I kind of feel like it's a Baker Mayfield market. Give me a team. I think the Colts is the play. I'll. I'll plant my flag on this.
Adnan Virk
I like it.
Colin Cowherd
I like Indy's roster. Quarterback. I don't think it's close. I could argue in Seattle and I love that roster. Geno for another year can win us nine games. I think it's untenable in Indy. I don't think that's an NFL starting quarterback. I thought for a year it was fun. It just doesn't work. Darnold, Colts. Will they be in the running?
Adnan Virk
You're saying Go to Shane Steichen, who did wonders for Jalen Hurts.
Colin Cowherd
And Justin Herbert is a rookie.
Adnan Virk
Right. That's true. No, Steichen is a really good quarterback guy. They drafted Anthony Richardson, the top five. I know they love his talent, but.
Colin Cowherd
He'S hurt a lot. And the accuracy stuff is so young, though. Yeah, I know, but 22 years old. Name a quarterback who was really wildly historically inaccurate.
Adnan Virk
Josh Allen was the guy coming out, but that was inaccurate.
Colin Cowherd
But by year two, he wasn't getting hurt and he was jumping over linebackers and he was putting up running and passing numbers that were redeemable.
Adnan Virk
Yeah, Indy could be in play with Darnold. There's. There's quite a few teams that could be in play. And we said last week if Darnold struggled again.
Colin Cowherd
You said it. Yeah.
Adnan Virk
That his. His Runway with the Vikings was probably up. I don't. I would say most likely he's played his final game in Minnesota because the tag is going to be right around 40. There's no reason for Kwesi to say in Koc we're going to tag you now and pay 40 when his contract's not going to come into that number. The Baker Mayfield 100 million over 3 is probably about right.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Adnan Virk
For Sam Darnold, he played so well the second half of the season. But what happened the last two games? Nine sacks, a record against the Rams. He. He's awful. Two picks was really bad against Detroit. And then you have Minnesota thinking, not only do we draft AJ McCarthy, but he was excellent in the preseason.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Adnan Virk
Someone there told me before the. As the season was getting going that we have our. Like, there's no question J.J. mcCarthy is the guy. Then he has the meniscus surgery and he has to miss the season. They really believe in him. They also brought in Daniel Jones and a very small number. So I wonder if Minnesota just decides to let Sam walk, which I think is more likely at this point. Then they have McCarthy healthy and. And Daniel Jones go out and battle it. Battle out for next year.
Colin Cowherd
So Jerry Jones, let's pivot back to Cowboys Deion Sanders. Jerry, by the way, the story breaks during a game that I'm interested in.
Adnan Virk
Dion, I just showed J. Mac.
Colin Cowherd
I got.
Adnan Virk
I got 400 unread text right now. I'll show you after the segment.
Colin Cowherd
400 from what?
Adnan Virk
Well, after that, after we dropped that Dion report, the phone went crazy because not only is it Dion in the Cowboys, but everyone wants to know how real.
Colin Cowherd
Now, what do people on your phone say?
Adnan Virk
Well, it's a lot of teams saying, is that. Is that real? It's a lot of executives. It's a lot of agents saying, is this a push to get more money? I don't think it is. He has too much respect for Rick George, the AD in Colorado. And I think also Jerry being so excited about having Deion return to the star and what that would mean for the Cowboys. So it's a lot of question marks. I can't. I'm going to show you some of these texts that you'll be like, wow, that's. That's crazy. I can't believe. But I believe should Dion. It's been made abundantly clear to me, should Dion want the Cowboys job, that he will either be at or certainly near the top of the list. And that means it's very real. But he has to want the job. And I still think we're. We're figuring that out. But because he has the relationship with Jerry, that's why he can call up Deion Sanders and not even schedule the formal interview. And I think to a degree, a much lesser extent, he has some of that with Kellen Moore. That's why they waited with Kellen Moore. He knows him. He's been in the building. But I believe that Dallas is absolutely hell bent on getting this higher, not only right, but having it have some pizzazz, some. Some panache, some splash. And if it's not Dion, Kellen Moore is another name that makes a lot of sense, but they. Robert Saleh. It needs to be someone that understands that market.
Colin Cowherd
For the record, my staff did a good job. So we were comparing Josh and Anthony Richardson. So Josh Allen came into the league, completed 53% his rookie year or in college? Rookie year, rookie year. Second year he was close to 59. Third year, he was close to 70.
Adnan Virk
That was the huge jump.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, Anthony Richardson, almost 60% as a rookie, dropped to 47%. So I could argue Josh had a lot more starts in college and grew in one direction. The more video you got on Anthony Richardson, who was hurt more than Josh, the worse he got. It's as if the league went, yeah, he's got about two things he can do. Cut those off. So whereas Josh, it was like, ooh, he's good. Oh, wow, he's really good. Oh, we can't stop him. With Anthony, it's like there's something there. How he solved the puzzle. He's limited.
Adnan Virk
How about the Rams, by the way?
Colin Cowherd
For what?
Adnan Virk
The Rams? I mean, what, what a story. Do we have two minutes Talk Rams?
Colin Cowherd
Well, have they missed the last three years on a defensive draft pick? They're all great.
Adnan Virk
How good is Jared Verse? I mean, this kid's unbelievable. How well have they drafted? Think about this. They're one in four. They have not only cup and Nakua hurt, then they have the two linemen hurt, Avila and Jackson. They have. Their defense is decimated.
Colin Cowherd
Tyler Higby, the tight end was even.
Adnan Virk
Play most of the season. It was told to me that week eight was the pivotal point. They beat Minnesota on Thursday night. Had they lost that game, I think, and I think most teams believe it wouldn't have been a fire sale calling, but it would have been. The Rams would have been open for business. That doesn't mean they were going to trade cup, but they were Going to be open for business. And realized that this season was over. They beat Minnesota, they rattle off 10 of 13, the defense over the last four games, under nine points allowed with. With all their starters in play. And when you think about Matthew Stafford, unbelievable how well he's played, finally has.
Colin Cowherd
A healthy O line.
Adnan Virk
The O line. There it is right there. And I think Matthew Stafford's hall of famer, almost 100 wins, Super bowl champ, comeback player of the year, fastest ever to 60,000 passing yards. There's so many factors with Stafford, but the connection with McVay. And then taking it a step further, a few years ago, the Rams did something that very few teams want to do, which is realize we're not a player or two away. We are multiple guys away. So they rip the band aid off, and that's when they move on from a Bobby Wagner, a Leonard Floyd, a Von Miller, Jalen Ramsey. And then they start to retool. They start to hit on the draft.
Colin Cowherd
Last year was the rebuild year, and.
Adnan Virk
They made the playoffs, and Aaron Donald retires. I didn't. We said probably about two months ago, six weeks ago, that if the Rams could somehow get healthy, that that's the team not only in the NFC west, but potentially in the nfc, that nobody wants to play. And if I know how good Philly is, we all do.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Adnan Virk
But if you're Philly and you're thinking, we really got to deal with the Rams now, this team is as hot as anyone. They have as good a coach as anyone in a quarterback playing about as well as anyone. So that. That's an. I'm. If I'm a Rams fan, I'm J. Mac.
Colin Cowherd
J. Mack said, so I picked the Rams to win the division. And old J. Mac said, cars, you can't replace Donald.
Adnan Virk
And I said, that's true. I mean, you can't.
Colin Cowherd
He's after Reggie White, the greatest defensive lineman I've ever said. But I said they've been planning it because Aaron Donald was up front with the organization. Aaron said, I got a couple of years here.
Adnan Virk
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
And so they started drafting the defensive line two and three years ago, and they've hit on all of them. And now their pass rush is equal to Donald and Von Miller, but they're not paying anybody yet.
Adnan Virk
It's unbelievable.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Yeah. And if you've watched them in the first month, they had eight sacks. They had nine against Minnesota. You're watching. It's like. It's like you're watching the Rams in the last month grow these guys, like, by next year. It'll be a top three defense in the league. They're all, they haven't missed on anybody.
Adnan Virk
Yeah. And they are, I would say, arguably the best one, one of the best 12 punches at receiver. And now a healthy offensive line with a quarterback who's upright and comfortable and one of, if not the best play callers in the NFL. Pretty exciting.
Colin Cowherd

Fox Sports Radio Host
We're gonna revisit Rams Bills. So if you remember back in week four, Baltimore dismantle Buffalo 3500 just a beat down. Josh Allen got pulled late in that game. They were. It was. It was over. Josh Allen also knows things are much different this time around for both teams.
Colin Cowherd
I feel like we've grown quite a bit since that game. Obviously learned a lot from from those moments going Back and watching it obviously wasn't our, wasn't our best effort, you know, felt like we didn't play our best football. But again, that's. They got a really good team too that they're, they're playing this week for a reason. Their defense the last really eight, eight to ten weeks has been superb. Their offense is fantastic as well. They got a lot of, a lot of studs over there led by Lamar obviously. And it's a tough team to play. Regardless.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Got some numbers for you. Look at this Buffalo offense in that game, Colin. Not great, but that was rock bottom. Sometimes you got to hit rock bottom before you bounce back. And again, this is, I mean this, that team did not have a Mari Cooper. You know, this is a, that team had Keon Coleman in his fourth career game. Keon Coleman's emerged as a player. I, I don't think we're going to see that. You think there's a high scoring game, a shootout, a low scoring game.
Colin Cowherd
There's going to be points. The totals. I think the Rams Eagles is low scoring.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Washington, Detroit's gonna have points. I think that.
Colin Cowherd
By the way, this story just came down. Zay Flowers, Pro bowl receiver Zay Flowers is the only Ravens player not practicing today. He hasn't practiced since injuring his knee in the regular season finale 12 days ago. So Ravens play at the Bills. So I just, just cancel Zay Flowers out.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Well, from a prop perspective, who takes his spot? And I saw that Isaiah Likely, the.
Colin Cowherd
Tight end now, he's interesting.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Shifted him outside into the slot. You can move him around. He's a twitchy. I would be looking at props for likely and they just don't have receivers that scare you. I think Buffalo loads the box and says, hey, beat us with Rashad Bateman.
Colin Cowherd
You think Derrick Henry's gonna have that kind of game again?
Fox Sports Radio Host
I, I don't see it. I feel like this is very rarely.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, it's like the Rams after that perfect Bills performance weren't as good the next week. The Rams are not going to play that well against Philadelphia. Cold weather, much better defense, more pressure. Kyron Williams banged up.
Fox Sports Radio Host
All right, let's get to, let's get to the next story. Colin. That is Chiefs, Texans. That's also a rematch. Not getting a lot of pub. They met in week 16 which was what, like a month ago? KC did win 2719 and it locked up the number one seed. It wasn't a blowout though. It was not nip and tuck, but it was, it was within the, the spread for a While CJ Stroud says the familiarity of facing the defending champs less than a month ago is beneficial.
Colin Cowherd
You definitely got to go back and, you know, see, you know, things that work, things that didn't work, you know, and I think that definitely helps playing them so recently, but, you know, they also have that advantage as well. So, you know, we got to be able to, you know, still have a new game plan and do things that are, you know, new and. But yeah, it definitely does help to see familiar team again and, you know, they're, you know, they do a lot of great things and, you know, we didn't really see a whole bunch of it. I think of the exotic thing. So, you know, I wouldn't be surprised if that stuff started to show up. So. Yeah. But it definitely does help that we see them not too, not too long ago. All right, McVay and Reed, extra time.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Forget about it. Well, so if you remember that other game, which was also in. Casey Tank Dell caught the touchdown pass to tie it, except he got injured on the play. There was a long delay and they missed the extra point. All the momentum out the window. Casey kind of takes over from there and then tacked on a late.
Colin Cowherd
But it's a. It's different Houston and the weather's different. Houston cold weather, Rams cold weather. Do not like the Texans and Rams this weekend. It's a different ball game.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Nico Collins really the only threat. I'm telling you, without Diggs and Dell, they just don't have the horses outside.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, you can defend a team much differently when you don't have to worry. I mean, I'm. I'm surprised. Maybe this is just the state of the Steelers that without Zay Flowers, the Ravens are like, so What? We'll rush 15 straight times. You're not doing that against Buffalo.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Yeah, I don't.
Colin Cowherd
Because you can't. You. You're going to have to throw the ball to beat the Bills because the Bills are going to drop 28 on you.
Fox Sports Radio Host
I did drop a little bit on Texans first half plus six. Under the guise that basically the Chiefs have had three weeks off. Bye week. Week 18. It's like, I think since Christmas is the last day. Patrick Mahomes took a snap. Colin. So maybe they start slow. Houston momentum from last week. You got to figure slow. It's coming out ag. You can't come out with Joe Mixon dives into the line of scrimmage. This is an empty the playbook kind of game. Right. And I think Houston shows up in the first.
Colin Cowherd
I don't know how Houston wins this game. I can't see it. I just can't. I can't picture it all the Andy Reid by Houston in cold weather.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Patrick Mahomes.
Colin Cowherd
I just can't. I just.
Fox Sports Radio Host
I saw stat divisional round. I think you had it earlier. He's 6, 0. But then I drug a little deeper. Sixteen touchdowns in this round, zero picks. Mahomes is just. He's a different beast in in January. Chiefs fans who hate do think I hate them. I'm saying nice things. All right, final story. Colin. We will wrap up with Rams Eagles Kellen Moore getting a lot of attention as a head coaching candidate. Now, we talked about this during the commercial break earlier. Kellen Moore's doing three job interviews in the next three days.
Colin Cowherd
Don't love it.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Per league rules, the interviews must be virtual and cannot last more than three hours. He's talking to the Cowboys, Jags and Saints. Listen, best I can tell, no Rams coordinator is interviewing for anything. I haven't seen any reports. They're locked in on this game. Kellen Moore's got three job interviews. This is first year, right, with the Eagles as the offensive coordinator. It's not like he's been here like five years.
Colin Cowherd
By the way, did you notice earlier Jordan said if they don't hire Deion, Kellen Moore would be some flash. Well, I wouldn't be excited about that if I was a Cowboy fan, would I? I was trying to read about why is that exciting?
Fox Sports Radio Host
Why did they run off Kellen Moore? And it's. Some people were speculating at the time that McCarthy was a little. They like this guy too much. Let me get him out of here. Remember, they had a bad playoff loss and the play calling was.
Colin Cowherd
I don't know. Is. I. I'm asking, does Kellen Moore excite Cowboy fans? That doesn't feel big to me.
Fox Sports Radio Host
I'm not a Cowboys fan.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, if you're gonna go get a coordinator, go get. Go get Ben Johnson.
Fox Sports Radio Host
I don't think.
Colin Cowherd
I think Ben Johnson, though. We've. I mean, when you think of Ben.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Johnson missed the window because Jerry messed around with McCarthy. They missed the window to set up an interview with Ben Johnson?
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, but I can call him. I can say, ah, this is Jera. I must spend a lot of money on this. Why don't you just hold off here and come down to Texas?
Fox Sports Radio Host
Okay, here we go. Weather report in philly. High of 36, 80% chance of snow, but only one inch.
Colin Cowherd
Okay. Yeah, it's over.
Fox Sports Radio Host
It's over for the Rams.
Colin Cowherd
You're calling it 80 chance of snow.
Fox Sports Radio Host
You know Les need is watching. That's your guy.
Colin Cowherd
I love him. But 80 chances but only one inch.
Fox Sports Radio Host
That's not a lot.
Colin Cowherd
One of them's a run team. One of them needs Stafford a deal. Okay, if they win, my bad.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Who's the biggest upset chance of the big three spreads you need?
Colin Cowherd
Who's went more commanders. Rams commanders.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Oh, commanders over the super bowl favorites.
Colin Cowherd
I'm not saying it's happening. I'm saying. But if Jaden Daniels. You know the downside to being a favorite, especially off a buy. Buys don't help. We think they do.
Fox Sports Radio Host
College football. Every team that had a buy loss. Now that is college.
Colin Cowherd
But, but, but there's something to be said about. You're rusty. I. I don't think buys matter. I think buys matter for an old NBA team, an extra day off is like a big deal. Like LeBron off an extra day and a half rest is a different player. But I don't think in the NFL like. Like there are like San Francisco last year was getting old. Like that's a team that could take an extra day. By the way, Stafford's a little older. Haven Stein. The Rams Cooper Cup. The Rams are a team like on extra rest. They're good now. They're on short rest and they travel cross country. That's another thing. Like the Rams offense is old in spots.
Adnan Virk
Agreed.
Colin Cowherd
J. Mac with the news. Well, that's the news and thanks for stopping by the herd lie news tomorrow is blazing fight. I think we're gonna line up on the. I think we both like Buffalo. You're. You're trying to talk yourself into the Rams. I can see it. Well, here's the thing is that this was a year in college and pro for favorites. So usually generally speaking, the wise guys slash Sharps take points. And so for years and years talking to Chad Millman and guys who do this, I would say I am an underdog. Better. I was terrible this year. You figured out very early the Rubik's Cube and you did more favorites. I had a terrible year on blazing five. I had a winning week last week and I really like my picks but I think it's easier now. The variables. I mean you kind of know what you get when you have a good quarterback. I feel like I kind of know what I'm going to get from everybody. I thought we both thought Darnold could struggle a little. By the way, both you and I said before the Rams Vikings it wouldn't be a quarterback game. It would be O line, D line. We thought the Rams D line would be punitive if, especially if the Vikings fell behind and they could pin their ears back.
Fox Sports Radio Host
So the reason I think the Eagles, just some trepidation. I'm on them. I have them in teasers, moneyline parlays, everything. The Eagles offensive unit has struggled at times this season. Okay, we know that A.J. brown starts pouting, you know, Jalen hurts limited in the pocket. If they somehow bottle up Saquon Barkley, like there's a world where that Eagles offense struggles. I don't see the Lions being stopped by Washington. I, I just don't see that happening. I don't see the Texans defense, which is good, shutting down.
Colin Cowherd
Well, you're saying which underdog has a chance? Well, I'd argue Buffalo's an underdog.
Fox Sports Radio Host
No, no, we're not doing that game. So forget that.
Colin Cowherd
Come on.
Fox Sports Radio Host
That's a, that's a toss up. That's a pickup.
Colin Cowherd
But, but I think I can see, I can see a world where the Commanders win opening snap and take a 7 nothing lead and the Lions, you know, drive down the field, cough it up or miss a field goal. Commanders now 7 nothing ball again and start kind of struggling to decipher quite how to work a defense to stop Jaden Daniels. And then you get a little tight. If let's say the Commanders go down to kick a field goal, it's 10 nothing and all of a sudden you're like, okay, timeout. Now this second drive is really important. So I don't think that's going to happen. But I could see the Commanders winning the. Like, if I'm the Commanders and I win the toss, I'm taking the ball. I am taking the ball. My shot in this game is get ahead and get into Detroit's head, which.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Can be done because Dan Campbell has a history. We're going for it.
Colin Cowherd
I'm.
Fox Sports Radio Host
I'm dead set on. I'm doing this. Nobody could talk me out of it.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, golf, golf threw five picks in a game this year. Now he's not going to do that again.
Fox Sports Radio Host
Tampa at home and scored 16 points. Like things happen. It's the NFL, you know.
Colin Cowherd
Now the Lions will probably beat him 34, 10.
Fox Sports Radio Host
I think Lions probably top.
Colin Cowherd
I just think I can see the Commanders taking a lead, being hyper aggressive. You do not want to get into a close game of the Commanders. They're great at it. Bizarrely, strangely great in close games. Lions haven't been in a lot of close games. Whether you're ordering wings for the game, whipping up a seven layer dip or ordering pizza. Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Hour 3: Teams That Are Still Looking for a Head Coach
Release Date: January 16, 2025
Host: Colin Cowherd
Guests: Adnan Virk
Introduction
In this engaging episode titled "Teams That Are Still Looking for a Head Coach," Colin Cowherd, alongside NFL insider Adnan Virk, delves deep into the current coaching landscape of the NFL. The discussion highlights several teams in search of their next head coach, providing insights into the potential candidates and the strategic moves behind these hiring decisions.
Breaking the News: The episode kicks off with the revelation that Jerry Jones, the iconic owner of the Dallas Cowboys, has been in discussions with Deion Sanders regarding the head coach position. Colin Cowherd references a report by Jordan Schultz, highlighting the initiation of this high-profile conversation.
Adnan Virk's Insights: Adnan explains the context of the Cowboys' search, emphasizing Jerry Jones's admiration for Deion Sanders's charisma and understanding of the Dallas Cowboys' legacy. He states:
"Jerry really respected the fact that they go from four wins to nine wins. And the fact that in many ways Deion Sanders is like the type of person that can come to Dallas even without any head coaching experience and get it from day one and maybe more importantly, be able to relate to Jerry on a personal level."
— [03:20] Adnan Virk
Financial Implications: The discussion touches upon the financial aspects of potentially hiring Sanders, including a likely substantial buyout of around $10 million. Adnan comments on the Cowboys' predicament:
"They backed themselves into a corner... So as a result of waiting with McCarthy. The Cowboys are behind the eight ball."
— [04:24] Adnan Virk
Top Contenders: Moving to the Chicago Bears, Colin and Adnan explore the team's head coaching hunt. The primary candidates discussed are Mike McCarthy and Ben Johnson, with a mention of Brian Flores as a potential dark horse.
Adnan Virk's Analysis: Adnan highlights the Bears' strategic considerations, focusing on the development of their star quarterback, Caleb Williams. He states:
"They have now had Mike Matty, Luke Gyles, Shane Waldron, all of these coaches that have not connected to their players... they're desperately in need, in my opinion, of an offensive coach, an innovator that will help get Caleb from point A to point B."
— [05:38] Adnan Virk
Team Strategy: The emphasis is on finding a coach who can harness Caleb's potential and lead the Bears to sustained success. Adnan suggests that while Mike McCarthy has a proven track record, Ben Johnson's recent success with Jared Goff makes him a compelling choice.
General Manager Search: The conversation shifts to the New York Jets, who are in search of their next General Manager (GM). Adnan notes the expected timeline for the Jets to appoint a new GM within the next week, setting the stage for subsequent head coaching appointments.
Aaron Rodgers Speculation: There is speculation about Aaron Rodgers potentially returning to the Jets if the new GM believes he can lead the team effectively. Adnan remarks:
"If the GM comes in and says, I think Aaron with this roster can win us 10, 11 games if we keep him upright, that's possible that he comes back."
— [12:04] Adnan Virk
Quarterback Dilemma: The Steelers are highlighted as another team facing significant decisions, particularly concerning their quarterback position. The discussion revolves around Justin Fields's performance and the potential transition from Russell Wilson.
Strategic Moves: Colin suggests that the Steelers might benefit from focusing on developing Justin Fields while awaiting a stronger quarterback draft class next year. Adnan adds:
"I think the Steelers... we thought it was Russell Wilson, but they're going to take their time. That's... I would say out of all these teams looking for a quarterback, it wouldn't be surprising to me if Pittsburgh waited till the end and waited till the draft."
— [14:47] Adnan Virk
Ravens and Rams: Brief discussions touch upon teams like the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Rams, focusing on their defensive strategies and coaching decisions. Adnan praises the Rams' defensive lineup and Matthew Stafford's leadership, predicting a strong performance in the upcoming season.
Coach Kellen Moore: Kellen Moore emerges as a notable figure in the coaching hunt, with three virtual interviews lined up with teams like the Cowboys, Jaguars, and Saints. Colin expresses skepticism about his fit with the Cowboys, advocating instead for Ben Johnson.
"Go get Ben Johnson. We've... I mean, when you think of Ben."
— [34:26] Colin Cowherd
Adnan Virk on Deion Sanders and the Cowboys:
"Deion in many ways has run his program in Colorado. I know you've talked about this much like an NFL team, much like the Cowboys..."
— [03:20]
Adnan Virk on the Bears' Offensive Needs:
"They're desperately in need... of an offensive coach, an innovator that will help get Caleb from point A to point B."
— [05:38]
Colin Cowherd on the Steelers:
"I think the Steelers... if we're not going to pay him as much as Russell Wilson, why not? Let's give Justin the job next year and then make our big run."
— [14:42]
Colin Cowherd on Kellen Moore vs. Ben Johnson:
"I don't think Ben Johnson missed the window because Jerry messed around with McCarthy. They missed the window to set up an interview with Ben Johnson?"
— [34:35]
The episode provides a comprehensive overview of the current coaching searches within the NFL, highlighting the strategic decisions teams are making to position themselves for future success. The Dallas Cowboys' potential hiring of Deion Sanders signals a shift towards charisma and cultural fit, while the Chicago Bears prioritize offensive innovation to harness their quarterback's potential. The Steelers' cautious approach to their quarterback situation reflects a strategic patience, anticipating stronger draft prospects. Throughout the discussion, the importance of aligning coaching philosophy with team goals emerges as a central theme.
