Jason McIntyre
You're listening to FOX Sports Radio. Welcome back to the herd. Jason McIntyre in for Colin Cowherd. He's under the weather. He will be back Thursday from New Orleans. Can't wait. Super bowl is nearly upon us. And to celebrate, let's bring in one of Colin's favorite guests, Greg Cosell, NFL Films. The guy's a legend. Breaking down videos. Wait till you see the Saquon Barkley stuff he's got cooked up. Greg, it is a pleasure to finally talk to you. I'm so excited. You know, first of all, great, great to officially talk to you. Your excitement level for the super bowl begins and ends with.
Greg Cosell
My excitement for the super bowl is always high because, you know, it's funny you say that because people always ask me, you know, what's going to be the deciding factor, what's. And I, I always feel I can't answer that because to me, from watching tape, I think there's, you know, 10, 12 variables that could play out in these games that we just don't know. There's always a few tweaks that coaches make. You know, the obvious stuff is, is the Saquon Barkley stuff. The obvious stuff is is Mahomes. That's the obvious stuff that everybody can talk about. But I just love getting into the weeds and the details of these games, and that's what really fascinates me.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. So you mentioned Mahomes. Obviously, his legs have been huge in the last two games, scrambling. Do you think we'll see that same success against the Eagles?
Greg Cosell
Well, you know, it's funny you say that. I actually went back and we did in our matchup room here at NFL Films and we looked at some of the games when he was the head coach at Denver because he played Mahomes six times and they did not spy Mahomes when, when Vic Fangio was the coach at the head coach at Denver. So I'm very curious to see how the Eagles decide to deal in those kinds of situations. You know, third and seven, second and eight, how they decide to deal with Mahomes because he clearly, as you so rightly pointed out, he uses his legs much more in the playoffs because it's such a big factor in breaking down the discipline of defenses. So I'm curious to see what Vic Fangio does with his rush. The Eagles are not a heavy blitz team. When they do pressure, it's more often what we call sim pressure, meaning they still rush four. Just one of the four tends to be a linebacker and they drop out a defensive lineman. So, you know, my sense it'll be much more of a controlled rush, trying to keep him in the pocket. But again, he obviously throws the ball really well, so that in and of itself doesn't mean that you stop him.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, that's a great nugget. On looking at Fangio's history, not spying Mahomes, I'm sure gamblers are interested in that, but I'm going to take it next level. So do you think that's because of the personnel he had with those teams? And maybe he has different personnel that are able to spy Mahomes this time he's got to change tendency, right?
Greg Cosell
Yeah. And that's, you know, that's a great point because there's going to be some tendency breakers. There always are in a Super bowl, because teams have two weeks to prepare. So obviously they don't reinvent the wheel as far as their entire concepts of what they've done all season, but they always add some things that are just a little bit different than what they've done. So maybe they will spy. Look, they've got a really long, athletic linebacker in orin Burks. He's 6'three230,235. In college, he played a lot of safety. It's very possible that they could use him as a spy. Even Zach Bond is a very athletic player. Now, Zach Bond has other really strong traits where I'm not sure they'd want to use him as a spy. But again, I'm not Vic Fangio. I don't know.
Gerald McCoy
But.
Greg Cosell
But Orin Burks, seems to me if they do want to spy, that would be the likely candidate to do that because of his length and athleticism.
Jason McIntyre
I like that name. That's good stuff. How does KC's running game. Kareem Hunt looks invigorated these last couple weeks. I guess the bye week really helped him. How do they match up against the Eagles? Because nobody really runs on Philly.
Greg Cosell
Well, you know, it's funny too, because you get to the playoffs and it always seems as if the Chiefs add a little more to their run game. I mean, we've seen that when you go through the playoffs, even in the last number of years, you can even think back two years ago to the super bowl against the Eagles when they really came out and ran the ball and even in the AFC Championship game this year against Buffalo, Hunt was a pretty big factor. He may not run for 130 yards, but the run game is a little bit of a factor. I guess the larger point for me is the Chiefs have kind of evolved over these last two years, J. Mac, into a team that plays a lot out of multiple tight ends. Two and three tight ends, close to 50% of their offensive snaps often come out of multiple tight end personnel. The Eagles want to play nickel with five defensive bats. They do not want to take Cooper DeJean off the field. So the question is, will they do that against two and maybe three tight ends or will they take DeJean off the field? Now, DeJean is a big physical guy for a slot corner, but I think that's one of sort of the games within the game of this Super Bowl.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, that's great stuff. And DeJean, for those who remember, he's the one who really jacked up. Derrick Henry in the regular season was like, whoa, this is a tough rookie. Let me ask about the tight ends. The middle of the field has really hurt. Philly Erts, I think, had 11 catches in the conference championship game. They have been suspect defending tight ends. Enter Travis Kelce, maybe Noah Gray. What do you see happening for Kelce there? A lot of people betting him to win the mvp.
Greg Cosell
Yeah, for the most part though, in all honesty, the Eagles have done well versus tight ends. I think Ertz. I don't want to say they wanted Ertz to catch that many balls, but I think they'll play this totally differently. You know, Kelce's a fascinating player in the super bowl because the last two years his numbers have really gone way down in terms of yards per catch, in terms of catches that went for first downs, you know, so it's hard to say he won't be a factor because it's Travis Kelce. He's going to be a first ballot hall of Famer, but he has not really been as big a factor in their past game as in previous seasons. You know, going back three, four years. And the Chiefs pass game, J. Mac, it's really become very scheme based, more so than individual based. So again, these are the kinds of things that are so hard to predict and speculate because, hey, no one would be surprised if Kelsey goes 9 for 125. But that really hasn't happened very much this year. So it's hard to say that that's going to be the case.

That's a good point. So where do you attack this Eagles defense? I know they have the two rookies in the secondary. Maybe that's it on the outside with running backs out of the backfield. I don't know. This is a really, really strong defense that Fangio has.
Greg Cosell
Yeah, I think it, as I mentioned, it's the. The past game has been very scheme based for the Chiefs. I think that's how they're going to do it. I think they'll do it with formations, personnel, motions. They'll do stacks, they'll do bunches. They'll try to create just the slightest bit of hesitation and confusion and coverage concepts because the way you play bunches and stacks, you have to communicate. I think they'll try to do that. I think they'll try to make the linebackers be beat slow due to eye discipline, motions, things of that nature. You know what's really been interesting is the Chiefs have not really been a vertical passing team this year, which when you think about Mahomes and how well he throws, it is really crazy. In fact, he's not been very good throwing the ball 20 plus yards in the air from the line of scrimmage. He's had the worst completion percentage in the NFL at 26%, which is very surprising. That's not the way they played offense this year. It's been very much situation, scheme based. We saw that against Buffalo, third down, the expected. Man, they ran mesh, they ran pick plays. That's what their offense has been. So I think, look, every game is situation based, but the Chiefs have really become that kind of team on offense.
Jason McIntyre
Wow, that's a crazy stat on Mahomes. Let's go to Jalen Hurts, his counterpart. He had a rough start to the season. They decided to reign him in. He ended up making a joke about being unleashed late in the season. I don't know. Where do you think he stands heading into this matchup? What does a tape stand in the postseason for? Hurts.
Greg Cosell
Yeah, I mean, I think when you watch the tape of Jalen Hurts, I think that they understand what his strengths are and what, you know, his limitations are. And by the way, most quarterbacks have that. That's not a knock on Jalen Hurts. You could say that we could go through some of the top quarterbacks in the league and you could say the same thing. He doesn't throw the ball great in the middle of the field. He's not comfortable. I mean, in the NFC Championship game, he did not make one throw between the numbers, not one attempt. That's not his strength. I think what they do really well is their offense is so layered with different options on every play. You've got the Barkley element, you've got the zone read element, you've got different screen elements. So you've got a pass game that works off all of that. And say what you want about Jalen Hurts, this cannot be overstated. J. Mac, he does not turn the ball over. And with the defense that they have, that's critical. I know many fans probably get upset when he runs out of the pocket to his right and throws the ball away. And you know what? That's better than trying to force a ball and throwing interception. If they punt, the other team has to go 75, 80, 85, 90 yards. That is really hard to do against the Eagles defense. So to me, Jalen Hurts has a tremendous understanding of the overall team concept and what he is within that. And he plays the game really smart. And the other thing, I think you'll see a lot of no huddle. The Eagles are a big no huddle offense and that in their mind hopefully will calm down the Steve Spagnolo situational pressures.
Jason McIntyre
That's a great point on the Hertz turnover. So I'm looking at his game log. He had four picks in the first three weeks. He's had one the entire rest of the season. Let me ask specifically on Hertz versus man, we know AJ Brown's a matchup nightmare. He will eat against McDuffie. I don't care if it's McDuffie, anybody. And then if it's against his own. Devonta Smith is just great at finding the spots. What do you, what's your best guess is the Chiefs, what will they do defensively? Heavy blitz zone, man. All of it.
Greg Cosell
Yeah, their blitzing is very situational because they're so good at it. People probably think Spags is just a heavy percentage blitzer. He's not. It's very situational. But they will play. Man, you know these two teams played week 11 last year. This was after the super bowl. Obviously I'm talking about the 2023 season. They had a Legarius Snead at corner. He matched up to Brown in that game last year and he actually ate Brown up. I think they're going to. I don't know they'll do this, but it wouldn't surprise me if they match Trent McDuffie on Brown. They do play a lot of man. Maybe they'll say, hey, let's stop the run, do the best we can and see if they can beat us throwing the ball. You know, all this we're just speculating, but I don't think Spags is going to do anything dramatically different overall. I think situational, you'll see a few different things that he hopes the Eagles haven't quite seen and maybe prepared for. But in terms of overall concept of how he plays defense, I don't think that'll change.
Jason McIntyre
That's a good. I forgot about that game. So the Chiefs were up 177 at the half and the Eagles dominated the second half. It was a big, DeAndre Swift game. And what a memory. You have, A.J. brown in that game. You must have looked at it. A.J. brown, one catch for eight yards. Oh, my gosh.
Greg Cosell
Well, that's what we do, J. Mac. That's what we do here. We look at all these games on tape.
Jason McIntyre
Wow, that's good stuff. All right, we can wrap up with this. Your big play of the week, Saquon Barkley's incredible touchdown run against Washington.
Greg Cosell
Yeah, I wanted to show this play and we can go to it because it takes a little while before we get to the actual breakdown. I wanted to show this play, obviously it was the first offensive play in the NFC Championship Game, but one of the reasons I wanted to show this play is, is because most people think of motion as being a big factor in the pass game. That's the way people see the game. They see motion. Is it a zone man indicator? But it's really important in the run game as well, and it's so important here. So this was the first place. So what you're going to see is tight bunch to the wide side of the field and Saquon Barkley is the eye back. You don't see this very often with Jalen Hurts under center, but Barkley is the I back and it's going to be a toss to the wide side of the field. And the concept is a basic one that everybody runs. It's what we call pin pull. AJ Brown is going to block down as the pin blocker on the defensive end and they're going to pull Dallas Goddard and Jordan Mailata. As I said, it's a pin pull concept, very basic concept. They're going to run it to the wide side of the field where there's a lot of room. Now watch what they do. They take Devonta Smith. They're going to motion him across the formation. Why? That removes a defender from run support to that side of the field. Because Marshawn Lattimore is going to run with him across the field. Now, there's one less defender, and the two defenders that are there that can defend this play are defensive backs. So look what you get. You get Goddard and Mailata blocking two defensive backs. And by the way, they outweigh them by a few pounds, as you can see right here. In fact, the Eagles O line weighs over 1700 pounds. It's the biggest O line in all of football. So now you get Goddard and Mailata blocking two defensive backs. Barkley's clean off the edge. We know J. Mac, no safety can tackle Barkley in the open field. So this is a great example of motion in the run game, which is such a critical aspect of what the Eagles do. And you're definitely going to see that in this super bowl and see how the Chiefs react to it.
Jason McIntyre
Damn, that's good stuff. Now, I don't know historically if you make a pick or not. Greg, do you want to make a pick or I don't want to put you on the spot. You know, I, no, it's okay.
Greg Cosell
I, I, I've had to do that already, so it's out there. You know, I'm on record. J. Mack, you know, I, I picked the Eagles. I, you know, I think it's going to be a really close, intense game. I just, there's a part of me that can't get beyond the fact that this Eagles O line is so, so good. No knock on the Chiefs D line. It's obviously very good, but this O line has been such a dominant, dominant group all season long. And you know, Barkley has the most yards before contact. Think about that. As great as Barkley is and he's great, but he has the most yards before contact, far and away, of any back in the league.
Gerald McCoy
Yeah.
Jason McIntyre
Greg Cosell, NFL Films. Great stuff. You heard the pick. He's on the Eagles. I'm on the Eagles. I don't know where cowherd's at, but probably the Chiefs. Thanks a lot, Greg. Enjoy the game. Great stuff this year.
Greg Cosell
Thanks am I really appreciate it.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, that was fun. Greg Cosell, Just an outstanding breakdown of everything. I mean, he's, he's good and he picked the Eagles, so I'm geeks right now. I know, I know. Chiefs fans, you're fine. But he's right. Eagles are better in the trenches, offense and defense. They're better at wide receiver. They have a better running back. The only place that the Chiefs are better as head coach and quarterback. And I know that kind of sort of matters just, just a little bit. A little bit. All right, coming up next. Hey, Greg. Iheart Women's Sports back here on the Herd. Great stuff from Greg Cosell, a former NFL quarterback was listening and texted during the show about the Chiefs offensive line, why they're not throwing the ball down the field. I gotta say, the audience for the Herd is formidable. You guys have good stuff and very much forward looking to the game. And let's bring in Gerald McCoy, former NFL defensive tackle. He is live from Radio Row in New Orleans. Gerald, how you doing, my man?
Gerald McCoy
I'm incredible, man. I mean, I'm taking in knowledge and all that's. That's what you call it when you hear I'm taking in knowledge. I've been here plenty of times in my playing days. Obviously we played the Saints here every year, but it's different when you're not getting ready for a game or prepping for a game or at least a game you're playing again.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, nice.
Gerald McCoy
It hasn't gotten too crazy out here yet, but it's Tuesday. Tomorrow everything starts to kick off even more.
Jason McIntyre
It'll start to get fun there very shortly. Obviously you spent a long time with the Bucks. They played at the Saints. I want to ask you about this Eagles defensive line. Man, they are dominant. I have a feeling they're going to bully the Chiefs in the trenches. What do you, what do you make of this matchup? Eagles defensive line versus the Chiefs makeshift offensive line.
Gerald McCoy
The saving grace of the offensive line is Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. They have the great equalizers. They know how to manipulate defenses and that's what they do best. But at some point in a key moment in the game, this offensive line is going to have to hold up. And that sort of what the Chiefs have done offensively all years, be real methodical, moving down. They Deacon and nickel and dime you down the field to control the clock. They're great on third down. And we seen at the end of the game in the AFC Championship, it wasn't what Patrick Mahomes did, it was how Andy Reid drew it up. And we seen last year on that final drive versus 49ers Andy Reed's ability to draw things up in the clutch. He's just the best at that. So as this game goes on, if we don't see this Eagles defensive line start to get after Patrick Mahomes, it won't happen when the clutch time comes up because at that point, Andy Reid got you figured out. So if they want to get on this team with, with Patrick Mahomes, who's been hit and sacked More than he's been his. His entire career this season. They need to do it early and often, because if they don't do it early and often, you had Andy Reeves. Mercy.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, that's a great point. And the Eagles actually led, I believe it was 2414 in the last super bowl meeting with the Chiefs. And ended up blowing it, of course, because Patrick Mahomes, that's what he does. But this time, they have Saquon Barkley, and he has been unbelievable this season. Tremendous talent. And I just wonder, Chiefs run defense has been leaky. Gerald, how do you stop this guy if you're Kansas City?
Gerald McCoy
Yeah, it has been extremely leaky. But at the same token, here's what I know. Going into the Houston game, there wasn't one player where all week they said this one guy could beat our team. It was collective. They knew who Joe Mixon was, but they also knew who C.J. stroud was, and they knew they had to work through certain things. All right, you go into the Buffalo game, Josh Allen is the guy. James Cook is the X factor. He helps, but Josh Allen is the guy. And we've seen that. Even though their run defense was very leaky versus Buffalo, Buffalo stopped giving the ball to James Cook because Josh Allen is the guy. I don't know why they did that, but they did in this game. Saquon is the guy. Philly knows it. We all know it. Kansas City knows it. I played for Joe Cullen. I know what he's telling this defensive line. He's telling them they believe this. One person can beat our entire defense with one guy, and they're going to take it personal. So what do they need to do? You can't get undisciplined, but the Kansas City Chiefs are not undisciplined. Because if they were, they wouldn't have been at this point having an opportunity to three feet. You got to stay in your gaps, have gap integrity, because you're facing a guy who can go lateral and vertical 0 to 100 like that, make one mistake, and he could go to the crib. And they're teaching and coaching that. But they're going to take this personal. I'm telling you. That's what they're going to do up front. But Philly's gonna do what Philly do. Saquon will touch this ball 25 to 30 times for sure.
Jason McIntyre
Is your guess that the Chiefs offense is the key to this game? Because I don't know. I just don't. They're not exciting, they're not explosive. It could be Hollywood Brown, it could be Noah Gray. We don't even know who their weapons are going to be. I still don't know how the hell they beat the Bills, you know, but this is not like an explosive, scary Kansas City team. They're just methodical and they have the best quarterback on the planet.
Gerald McCoy
So here's the thing with being scary. Scary doesn't mean better. The. The. The. The Philadelphia Eagles are scary. They're top to bottom, the better team. I don't care how you feel as a Kansas City chief. If you're being honest with yourself, you're going to say top to bottom, talent for talent, number for number. The Philadelphia Eagles are the better team. The names and the resumes don't reflect the numbers for the Kansas City Chiefs. It reflects the record. There's no Kansas City chief with all of these top names that's up for a postseason award. You go look at the numbers. I could give you four different numbers stats, and don't put a team attached to it. The average numbers, you're not going to say that's the Kansas City Chiefs, but if I showed you records, you're going to pick the one with the best record and say, that's the Kansas City Chiefs. Because there's no substitution for experience. Tom Brady talked about it. You have to be great in the clutch. It's technique time. You gotta know how to win. You know how I know that that stands true? Because Tom Brady went to Tampa in a year of COVID and he won a Super Bowl. And since he left, the Bucs haven't missed the. Missed the playoffs because he established a culture of winning.
Jason McIntyre
You.
Gerald McCoy
There's a way to win, and Kansas City knows how to win games. It's not about the best team or who has the most speed. It's the experience. And these guys have the experience. They've been here before and they know how to win games.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. Since you play defensive tackle, we talked a lot about Jalen Carter recently. He's been utterly dominant. But people forget about Chris Jones, who's a pretty damn good defensive player. And for some reason, in crunch time, he always appears to show up and make a great play, whether it's lined up outside or inside. Tell us about Chris Jones a little bit and how he could factor in here against the best offensive line in the league.
Gerald McCoy
Chris Jones is the only player in all of football to have 25 pressures inside and outside. Chris Jones is going to the hall of Fame and it's going to say defensive tackle next to his name. The most impactful plays he's made in his career in the playoffs have been a defensive end and last game in the AFC championship. As great as he's been, I can argue that that was the best game I've ever seen him play. I'll tell you why. What he did to that offensive line was demoralized. It's not gonna show up on the stat sheet. But he's taking grown men from left tackle all the way to right tackle, tackle, guard, center, guard, tackle. And he's taking them on any given play regardless of the result and putting them three and four yards in the backfield. That's what he does. He impacts the game without having a stat. And when you're doing that, it makes the offense say, dang, we should stop giving the ball to James Cook. It makes the offense say we have to speed up our operation. It changes everything. It makes your offensive line think four. It makes your running back have to cut sooner than he wants to. It makes your quarterback start seeing ghosts. Just because this guy at any given moment is taking your defenders who's supposed to be defending your quarterback and he's taking grown men and saying, you're going to do what I say do on this play. And that's demoralizing to any offense. But that's what Chris Jones brings to a team.
Jason McIntyre
Well, I listen, I, I know you like him. You are a defensive tackle. He ain't doing that to Jordan Mylota or Lane Johnson. You know that. That's the best tackle duo in the league, right? Would you agree?
Gerald McCoy
I don't, I, I, I, I, I, I don't, I, I don't know that. No, I don't know that. And he get, he, Chris Jones is, is so elite of a player. We seen my, my lot of give up sacks last against the Rams, didn't we?
Jason McIntyre
So it's not like yeah, ver had a decent game.
Gerald McCoy
We're talking about Lane Johnson. We're talking, yeah, we're talking about Lane Johnson. I'm, I'm not going to say anything bad about Lane Johnson. He's a Sooner. So Lane Johnson can do whatever he wants. He's an Oklahoma Sooner, the best right tackle all of football. I love you, Lane. I would never say anything bad about you. But everybody else got to deal with Chris Jones and Chris Jones has been here over and over and over again. So if he's done this over and over and over again, I'm plans to statistics that he'll do it again.
Jason McIntyre
Well, you just gave Jordan my lotta some Bulletin board material. Hopefully some Eagles fans will clip that off. Oh, he ain't getting pushed around by Chris Jones.
Gerald McCoy
Write it down, Write it down. Stamp it. Do all of that. Man, Chris Jones is Chris Tones.
Jason McIntyre
All right, let's go to.
Gerald McCoy
And I'm a defensive guy.
Jason McIntyre
I'm going for the defense, obviously. Obviously. Let's quickly go to Miles Garrett. He requested a trade this week. Listen, he's 29. I'm sure he's still got a couple good years left, but there's a lot of tread on those tires. He's had some injuries mount. He played injured all season. The guy's a warrior. What's your best guess? Do the Browns say, hey, he wants out, we got to trade him, or do you think they're just like, we're not trading you. What's your guess?
Gerald McCoy
If I had to guess, I think they give him what he wants. And I'll tell you why. This guy has been loyal to a fault. All. All to the. I mean, when I left Tampa, when we parted ways, the first place I went to visit was the Cleveland Browns. And they asked him. At this point, they didn't have no all pro defensive tackle or nothing on the team. They had Larry Okun Joby, who was the three technique. And I love Larry. Larry's a great player. But you have an all pro that's willing to come sign with your team. And they asked him, how would you love to have Gerald McCoy partner with you and y'all be a stand up? His response was, we good with what we got. Because he's that type of person when it comes to who he's with and the team he's on. Extremely loyal. The only time you've seen Miles Garrett make it about him was this year, and it was targeted at TJ Watt. He said, I'm the guy. I just want you to know that around his parts, when we talk defense, I'm the guy. But that's still in representation of his team. With everything this team has been through, he's never made it about him. He's always been loyal to his team. So when a guy that's been doing that one Defensive player of the year, when that says defensive player of the year, which team he was on is gonna have your name. He's a finalist again this year. A guy like that, just give him what he wants, man. He's earned that right. He's a legacy guy, and he's earned the right for you to say, you know what? You gave us everything you had. We have, you know, we have no quarrels with what you got. We'll. We'll do what you want.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, I, I would hope you're right. You want to get a final pick in for the Super Bowl? Gerald, you got a pick yet?
Gerald McCoy
Yeah, I'm going right now. Without breaking everything down. Blindly picking the Kansas City Chiefs 28, Philadelphia Eagles 21.
Jason McIntyre
Okay, so not liking field 28.
Gerald McCoy
21. Kansas City Chiefs.
Jason McIntyre
Oh, boy. Three Pete says Gerald McCoy. Good stuff, Gerald. Congrats on a great career and enjoy radio row. Maybe I'll see you down there.
Gerald McCoy
All right. Thanks, brother.
Jason McIntyre
All right. Gerald McCoy, former defensive tackle, standout I see in the notes here. Six time pro bowler. He a beast. I do disagree with him on Chris Jones. Jordan my lotta. But that's fine. We can have disagreements. That's life. And I totally disagree with this pick and I will be probably betting the under on field goal. So I'm with him. Total field goals in the game under. Haven't seen the line yet but I'll dig into props while I'm on the flight tomorrow.
Gerald McCoy
All right.
Jason McIntyre
We could wrap up the show with this. Luka Doncic met with the media this morning out here in la. Rob Pelinka, very dapper Rob Pelinka. I, you know, I didn't get a chance to google this. I, I think he was on the Fab five. I'm pretty sure he was. Maybe one of the producers can yell at me that I'm wrong. He was on the Fab. Yeah, thank you. I remember. I'm just telling you guys, I love the Fab five. Young Jason wearing the baggy pants down beyond my knees. Yes. This was when I thought I was going to the NBA. And then you go try out for freshman year basketball and you don't even make the final cuts and you're like, oh, I'm not going to be an NBA player. So Rob Pollika was on the Fab five. He was very dapper in the Luca press conference. Here's what Rob Pelinka said about the impact on Luca joining the Lakers. Luka Doncic joining forces with the Los Angeles Lakers is a seismic event in NBA history. And the reason I say that is because we have a 24.5year old global superstar that's going to get on the stage of the most popular and influential basketball brand on the globe. And I think when those two powerful forces come together, it brings basketball joy to the world. I just had to call up the Lakers schedule. So tonight they are against the paperclips at 7 o'clock out here on the west coast and then Thursday against the Warriors. I'm gonna go ahead and guess Luca's not ready to play anytime soon. My guess would be post All Star break, let him get acclimated to la. Not gonna lie, I don't live that far from the Lakers facility. I would love it if Luca kind of moved into the neighborhood. That would be a lot of fun. As you could tell. Like, I'm going to be ordering the Luca 77 jersey. I'm a fan. What can I say? What's not to love about this guy? He likes to eat, he likes to drink, he likes to play basketball. I mean, come on, this is a guy you want to hang with. You know, I guess I got to brush up on my international foreign language, but you know, I can work on that this summer. Folks, it's been fun filling in for Colin. We are in New Orleans Thursday and Friday. He will be healthy and back on the mic. Thanks for listening.

The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Episode: Hour 3 - The Eagles Have the Edge
Release Date: February 4, 2025
In this episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, hosted by iHeartPodcasts and The Volume, the focus centers on the highly anticipated Super Bowl matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. With Colin Cowherd out due to illness, Jason McIntyre steps in to guide listeners through in-depth analyses, expert opinions, and compelling predictions from esteemed guests Greg Cosell of NFL Films and former NFL defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.
Jason McIntyre opens the discussion by highlighting the excitement surrounding the Super Bowl and introduces Greg Cosell as a special guest. Greg expresses his enthusiasm, stating:
“My excitement for the Super Bowl is always high because, you know, it's funny you say that because people always ask me, you know, what's going to be the deciding factor, what's...”
[02:57] Greg Cosell
Greg emphasizes the unpredictability of the game, noting the multitude of variables that can influence the outcome beyond just star players like Saquon Barkley and Patrick Mahomes.
The conversation delves into Patrick Mahomes’ performance, particularly his scrambling ability, and how the Eagles' defense might counter it. Greg Cosell references past strategies:
“I actually went back and we did in our matchup room here at NFL Films and we looked at some of the games when he was the head coach at Denver because he played Mahomes six times and they did not spy Mahomes...”
[04:20] Greg Cosell
Greg discusses the Eagles' defensive approach under Vic Fangio, suggesting a controlled rush to keep Mahomes in the pocket while maintaining flexibility against his movement.
He further explores the Chiefs’ offensive schemes, particularly their use of multiple tight ends:
“The Chiefs have kind of evolved over these last two years, J. Mac, into a team that plays a lot out of multiple tight ends. Two and three tight ends, close to 50% of their offensive snaps...”
[06:36] Greg Cosell
Greg explains how this strategy challenges the Eagles' secondary, especially cornerback DeVonta Smith, and speculates on potential adjustments by the Chiefs' coaching staff.
The discussion shifts to the Philadelphia Eagles' defensive prowess, particularly their offensive line and defensive tackles. Gerald McCoy provides insights on the Eagles' O-line dominance:
“The Philadelphia Eagles are the better team. I don't care how you feel as a Kansas City chief. If you're being honest with yourself, you're going to say top to bottom, talent for talent, number for number. The Philadelphia Eagles are the better team.”
[27:52] Gerald McCoy
Greg and Gerald analyze the Eagles' ability to control the line of scrimmage and the impact of Saquon Barkley on their ground game. Gerald highlights the importance of experience and discipline in the Chiefs' offensive line strategy.
Jalen Hurts' performance is scrutinized, particularly his decision-making and turnover rate. Greg Cosell comments on Hurts' intelligence and adaptability:
“He [Jalen Hurts] does not turn the ball over. And with the defense that they have, that's critical. I know many fans probably get upset when he runs out of the pocket to his right and throws the ball away...”
[15:12] Greg Cosell
The conversation emphasizes Hurts' ability to manage the game effectively, minimizing turnovers, and leveraging the Eagles' diverse offensive strategies, including no-huddle formations to disrupt the Chiefs' defensive timing.
As the episode progresses, Greg Cosell shares his Super Bowl prediction:
“J. Mac, you know, I picked the Eagles. I, you know, I think it's going to be a really close, intense game.”
[19:18] Greg Cosell
Gerald McCoy offers a contrasting view, predicting a close game but ultimately favoring the Chiefs:
“I'm going right now. Without breaking everything down. Blindly picking the Kansas City Chiefs 28, Philadelphia Eagles 21.”
[36:43] Gerald McCoy
Jason McIntyre aligns more with Gerald's pick, highlighting differences in analysis and the strength of both teams’ trenches.
Mahomes' Scrambling: Greg Cosell discusses how the Eagles might limit Mahomes' mobility to stifle his offensive impact.
“They [Eagles] will play more of a controlled rush, trying to keep him in the pocket.”
[04:20] Greg Cosell
Chiefs' Tight End Utilization: The Chiefs' frequent use of multiple tight ends challenges the Eagles' defensive schemes, potentially putting DeVonta Smith in complex matchups.
“All of these are the kinds of things that are so hard to predict and speculate...”
[05:45] Greg Cosell
Eagles' O-Line Dominance: The Philadelphia offensive line is highlighted as a critical factor, providing Saquon Barkley with ample blocking to exploit the Chiefs' run defense.
“This O line has been such a dominant, dominant group all season long.”
[19:55] Greg Cosell
Jalen Hurts' Intelligence: Hurts' ability to minimize turnovers and execute a layered offense is underscored as a key advantage against the Chiefs.
“J. Mac, he does not turn the ball over... he plays the game really smart.”
[15:12] Greg Cosell
Chris Jones' Impact: Gerald McCoy emphasizes the influence of Chiefs' defensive tackle Chris Jones, who consistently disrupts both the run and pass plays.
“Chris Jones is the only player in all of football to have 25 pressures inside and outside.”
[31:48] Gerald McCoy
The episode concludes with a spirited debate between Greg Cosell and Gerald McCoy on the likely outcome of the Super Bowl. While Greg supports the Eagles due to their superior offensive and defensive lines, Gerald remains confident in the Chiefs' experience and strategic prowess. Jason McIntyre synthesizes the discussions, emphasizing the strengths and strategies of both teams, leaving listeners with a comprehensive understanding of the impending showdown.
“Philly's gonna do what Philly do. Saquon will touch this ball 25 to 30 times for sure.”
[28:00] Gerald McCoy
As the Super Bowl approaches, The Herd with Colin Cowherd provides listeners with expert analyses, strategic breakdowns, and passionate predictions, making it an essential listen for fans eager to gain deeper insights into the biggest game of the NFL season.
Greg Cosell on Super Bowl Variables:
“...from watching tape, I think there's, you know, 10, 12 variables that could play out in these games that we just don't know.”
[03:34] Greg Cosell
Gerald McCoy on Eagles' Superior Team Structure:
“The Philadelphia Eagles are the better team. I don't care how you feel as a Kansas City chief... The Philadelphia Eagles are the better team.”
[27:52] Gerald McCoy
Greg Cosell on Jalen Hurts' Intelligence:
“J. Mac, he does not turn the ball over. And with the defense that they have, that's critical.”
[15:12] Greg Cosell
Gerald McCoy on Chris Jones' Dominance:
“Chris Jones is the only player in all of football to have 25 pressures inside and outside.”
[31:48] Gerald McCoy
