You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Albert Brer, senior NFL reporter Monday morning quarterback, is joining us. Let's get right to it. So there's a story out there that the Cowboys were caught a little off guard with a Mike McCarthy departure. And I and I theorized this a couple days ago, Albert that I think once he got Don Yee as an agent and Mike Vrabel went to the Patriots, that McCarthy viewed himself as Did Don Yi as the best candidate, and I think he may be, and I think they had a little leverage. And he looked at Dax contract, he looked at the running back room and went, he went and asked. He went and asked for five years guaranteed. And Jerry's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Jerry from Landman said, no, I'm a wildcatter. I'm not giving you that. And then Mike. I think Mike McCarthy knew that. With Dax contract and that running back room and whiffing on the last two first round picks a little bit, Albert, Dallas may be a tough place to win. Is that possible?
Albert Breer
Yeah, I hear you on that. I think this is actually a little bit more deep seated and I, and I do wonder if. If Jerry Jones has been whistling by the graveyard on this for a while. I, I go back to the summer and I got the sense back then that Mike was really kind of, you know, I'd say not happy with the fact that he had to go through the situation that he was being put through where it's very unusual to be in a contract year as a head coach. But not only that, like all of his assistant coaches were also in contract years. So everyone in the building, effectively, or at least on his side of the building, is, you know, going through the season with this hanging over their heads. And that was certainly reflected in the way the days after the season were handled. There was no negotiation. It never really got to that point. And, you know, I think what Mike McCarthy was looking at was like, how do I want to live out the rest of my days as a coach? And, you know, I don't think he was interested in going back into a situation after he just went through that year where he was going to be year to year again. So if they were going to do a two or a three year deal, I don't think that was interesting. I don't think that was of interest to Mike. You know, I think, you know, he wanted to be in a place where, you know, he would be able to build going forward. So, you know, I think the opportunity out there in Chicago, the opportunity out there in New Orleans, where he knows Mickey Loomis, by the way. Like, those two work together for five years when McCarthy was Jim Hazlett's offensive coordinator from 2000 to 2004, you know, I think you look at the landscape a little bit and you say to yourself, like, there's a better opportunity to build somewhere else. Like, why don't I do that? And I think part of it too, Colin, is just Maybe the Cowboys having a little bit of an inflated view of themselves and their job. You know, it's. Well, who wouldn't want to coach America's team? Well, if you're not willing to make the long term commitment, Mike McCarthy wouldn't want to do.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, J. Mac, J. Mack and Ryan kind of feel that maybe they got a little over their skis. And I've said this before, it's a bad running back room. They have one weapon. I, I would move off Micah, get another first round pick in a weak draft. I think you could get that and go get, go get like two offensive weapons. I just don't think in a world of Philly and Detroit and the Rams and Green Bay and Washington, I don't think they have enough firepower. And we don't know what Dax gonna look like off a second injury now I'm gonna throw something like I think's really interesting.
Albert Breer
Just really quick. The Micah thing is definitely worth monitoring. He's gonna be looking for, I mean I think he's be looking for $40 million. So how they handle that I think is going to be one of the key subplots their off season. No matter who's the coach.
Colin Cowherd
That was a, that would be a little bit of a gut punch. You think they're top heavy now? Okay, I'm going to throw this at you. Ohio State's got 14 five star guys. Notre Dame's got one that's fewer than Kentucky football. I said this when you know this well, Sean McVeigh, 30 years old, goes in interviews in LA and Stan Kroenke's like, we're not letting him out of the building. This kid is magic. And he did. He took 4 and 12 to 11 wins, 32nd ranked offense. The number one Goff was 07. Golf all of a sudden was a playoff quarterback. If Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame win or put on a classic 24, 23. Ohio State clearly has a huge advantage in talent and skill. What about the bears going okay. McCarthy, Ben Johnson, leader in the clubhouse. Are we looking at in Marcus Freeman? They should not be in this game. Penn State's got more good players. Texas does. Georgia does. Oregon does. Does Freeman have a shot in Chicago?
Albert Breer
I know they've kicked it around. Would they actually do it? I don't think so. I'm not sure that they feel like that's what they need right now. And I think mainly because they really would be looking for somebody who if it's not an offensive coach, it's somebody with a coherent plan. For the quarterback, somebody who's going to bring in somebody experienced to work with the quarterback, and somebody who's going to have a plan beyond just who the first coach might be. So, you know, like, if you're going to lose your offensive coordinator, say, after two or three years, because Caleb really kills it. Okay, like, how deep's your well of NFL contacts where you'll be able to replace him? That's what I'm saying. So, yeah, I mean, I think they started. The Bears started with the leader of men thing, which Marcus Freeman 100% fits. But as they went through the last five, six weeks of the season with Thomas Brown as the interim coach, and they watched how Caleb's play and development suffered over the last month of the season because, you know, they had a head coach who was also the offensive coordinator stretched a little thin. You know, I think they kind of came to the realization, okay, like, we still want a leader of men. We still some want somebody who can coach all 53 and who can affect all 53 and who can change the culture in our building, but we also need to have a really solid plan for the quarterback as a part of that. So, you know, in a perfect world, they killed two birds with one stone and they wind up getting somebody who is. Was that guy who can be both. You know, I just. I look at Marcus Freeman as somebody who really intrigued them at the beginning, but maybe as they've gone through this process, you look at it and you need a very defined plan for the quarterback. And I don't know, in fairness to Marcus Freeman, after, you know, the experience that he's had, that he'd be able to do that at the NFL level yet. I think he's a bright coaching prospect for the NFL to look at over the next few years. I just don't know that Chicago is a spot.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. You know, Raiders are funny. It. It does appear they don't have a GM and a coach or a staff that Brady's got influence. How much Tom has, I don't know, but he's got some. Which would lead me to believe he would like an offensive guy. That would be my guess. My guess is my guess. I don't know Tom well enough to have a big, strong opinion, but Ben Johnson would probably my guest be now that Vrabel's off the board.
Albert Breer
Yep.
Colin Cowherd
Would be his number one choice. That's how I think Brady would see the world because he and Josh McDaniels were so close. Right. You buy that?
Albert Breer
I agree. I agree. You know, and they had to convince him to come in. You know, I, I think I said this to you, to you, back in November, December, where Ben was going to approach this coaching cycle differently than he has the last couple, where he wasn't going to take any interview where he didn't think, like, I eventually would accept that job. And so, like, there were teams involved where, you know, like he said, like, you know, like his camp would say to the team, like, hey, look, like, don't even put in a request. We don't want to have to turn you down. We don't want to embarrass you. And the Raiders initially were one of those teams. And over time, the, you know, like, the Raiders, you know, wound up deciding, okay, like, we're going to put a request. And they put a request in Ben's camp. Asked why Tom Brady makes a phone call. And, you know, all of a sudden, I think, you know, Ben Johnson is looking at that Raider job differently now. Why? Well, one, you know, one of the messages that's kind of come across is that Tom Brady's not going to put his name on something that's embarrassing or a clown show. And so, like, that is one thing that you say, okay, like, Tom Brady is going to have some level of influence here. There's also, Tom Brady is kind of the front man for some of the other partners. Egan Durbin is the CEO of Silver Lake. He bought seven and a half percent of the team that was approved back in December. You know, they. Tom Wagner is Tom Brady's partner. They're going to be more resources there. And so, like, that's part of it as well. Now, is Brady going to be there day to day? No, he, you know, he lives in Florida. His kids are there. He's obviously got other commitments, but certainly he's going to have an influence. And, yeah, I think that the message that's sort of been imparted on Ben and all the other candidates is this is a different version of the Raiders that you're going to be walking into. And you don't have to worry about some of the things that past Raider coaches and GMs have had to worry about, which I think is why Ben is interested in this job and why Ben did a 180 on this job. And, you know, I think they're definitely in play right there with the Jaguars and the Bears. I don't know that Ben's made any decision on which one he likes more than the next. Hasn't met with any of these people in person yet, obviously, but the Raiders have put something intriguing in front of him and a lot of other people that looks a lot different than, you know, what you would have thought of the Raiders over the last 15 or 20 years.

Well, I could ask you one or two questions, but I'm not going to ask you about the Steelers quarterback because they don't, they don't know what they're doing. And I think they want to be patient. That's their history. So I'm going to ask you about the Jets. You know, they're, they're selling on the market. They're selling, we gave Salah five years, Joe Douglas six years or whatever it is. We are patient. We're not the Raiders, we're not the Bears, whatever. Yeah, I do think there's the Aaron Rodgers issue, but I don't think that's as big an issue because Aaron's arguably in his last year and has clearly lost the power that he had. In fact, I think Aaron's camp has come out and said if it's not the right coach and gm, I'm not staying a will anybody hire a coach that I don't know why? I think it's going to be the Saints or the jets this weekend. Will anybody make a move this weekend because of the playoff games? The league would prefer you wait until next week. And your thoughts on are the jets going to make a move quickly?
Albert Breer
So I would say I would be on watch for the Titans to name a GM would probably be the next shoe to drop. Far as coaches go. I think teams are going to wait to do the in person stuff next week, which you can start to do the in person stuff on Monday. I believe it is as soon as the divisional round is over. Look, I, you know, I think what the jets have sort of offered guys is like, look like whoever we pick, whether it's A GM or a coach. We're going to give you the opportunity to build this in your own image. So they've left it open. They haven't said we're hiring one before the other, and they're going to decide, okay, like, here's the person we want as the leader of our organization, then that person is going to help pick his partner, and then those two are going to go to work. And so, you know, for some of the guys in the running, like, I think Aaron Glenn's got a really good shot at that job. And I think Aaron Glenn's going to be a head coach somewhere. So, you know, Aaron Glenn, if he comes in, who does he bring with him? Is it somebody like a Ray Agnew from Detroit, Like a Lance Newmark from, From. From. From Washington, who was in Detroit with him? One of the guys in New Orleans? Like, I think that's certainly a possibility. Somebody who's more experienced, like an Arthur Smith? Like, who would Arthur Smith bring with him as a gm? Or do they go the GM route? If Tennessee doesn't hire Mike Borgonzi from Kansas City, does Mike Borgonzi come in as the general manager? Does Matt Nagy come with him as the coach? I think, you know, like, I think whatever they do, it's going to be based on what? Based on one person. They'll bring in one person, whether it's a coach or gm, and then build around that person. And I think that that's the appeal of the job. You look at it, take the quarterback out of it. We know Aaron's on, you know, on 17 or 18 right now when it comes to his career. Right. Not just in the back nine. So you look at it and you say, okay, Garrett Wilson, Sauce Gardner, Quinn Williams, Quincy Williams, Olu Fashanu, Breece Hall. Like, they've got the core of a pretty good team. Jermaine Johnson, a pretty good young team there, if you can get some of the key positions filled out. So they do have something to sell there. Now, what you have to wrap your head around is ownership. But, you know, I. I do think next week at some point, they will pick either a head coach or general manager and build out from there. It wouldn't surprise me if that guy was Aaron Glenn.
Colin Cowherd
Albert Breyer, as always, Monday morning quarterback. Good luck to you and the Buckeyes, my friend. I see that helmet back there. That's not. That's not a Notre Dame helmet. That's.
Albert Breer
Get it for you. You see all the. See all the Buckeye leaves on?
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I See that? Good seeing you, my man.
Albert Breer
Good to see you, Colin.
Colin Cowherd
All right, J. Mac with the news.
Jason McIntyre
No, no, no, turn on the news.
Colin Cowherd
This is the Herd line news.
Jason McIntyre
We're looks so relaxed. He's not nervous about the Ohio State game at all.
Colin Cowherd
Well, they're eight and a half point favorite.
Jason McIntyre
They are. We'll talk about them here shortly. All right, let's get started with the Texans. Colin, this kind of came out of nowhere, so they're already walking wounded. No Tank Dell, no Stefon Diggs. And now Joe Mixon missed practice yesterday with an ankle injury and all of a sudden he's questionable. That is kind of a. A game changer. Not great news. I. I did see some Houston fans trying to spin this as. Hey, now, slow. It can't just run. Mixing into the line of scrimmage on 1st and 10 like he does all the time. Maybe they'll get creative and go more passing heavy. I don't know. Texans were 2 in 1 without mixing the season. Did beat the Bills 23 20. That was a wacky game. Allen was kind of concussed, but wasn't, you know, one of those deals. All right, what do you make of this mixing injury?
Colin Cowherd
Oh, I think it's a death knell. I think. I think Chiefs are going to win without those two rece receivers and mix in. They'll get blown out. Everything tells me Kansas City wins. Comfortable.
Jason McIntyre
You just load up on Nico Collins and say like, all right, who else is?
Colin Cowherd
And they have a number one corner, so this will just load up on him. And CJ good luck in 21 degree weather.
Jason McIntyre
I know we have a Houston Texans fan on staff. Maybe Dalton Schultz. Pops has a big game. Pops, is that possible?
Colin Cowherd
Five catches better.
Jason McIntyre
You better really pop negative real quick. Oh, my goodness. All right, let's move on to the Vikings. Now, you were hot for this Sam Darnold could stay in Minnesota story, but, well, not anymore. Yeah, that was before the. The end of the season for Sammy D. Did not go well. J.J. mcCarthy waiting in the wings. And Minnesota has a decision to make. Their GM believes if they do turn to JJ McCarthy, they'll do so confidently.
Albert Breer
He looks great. He's excited. You know, you talk about a kid who's just obsessed with football and loves being around the game. So we're excited about what we have in him. We're excited for this off season for him. It's a big off season and then, you know, we'll continue from there. I can't sit here and tell you I know anything for Certain, I know that I'm willing to believe in the person that we have. That position is about talent and preparation and he's got those things in spades. And so if that's the course of action, we decide we'll go there confidently.
Colin Cowherd
They're going to get J.J. mcCarthy, they're going to let Sam go. And my guess is the tight Titans will strongly consider Sam Darnold and the.
Jason McIntyre
Colts the team with the number one pick.
Colin Cowherd
If you don't love the quarterback. Well, I think the Colts will make a run. I think Seattle will kick the tires. I think Tennessee will look at Darnold now. Now if you can get the right number now, you can say Cam Ward. But they tried Will Levis and they tried Malik Willis was second round. Well, I mean they've gone back to, you know, they've gone here in the last several years with quarterbacks. None of them worked. And this is not a great quarterback class. How about this? I'm Tennessee, I get Darnold, I move down and get six extra picks.
Jason McIntyre
I don't know if you're getting six.
Colin Cowherd
Well, you're going to get, you're going to get something. You have to consider that Sam Darnold will be better as a rookie, I would guess than the rookie quarterbacks. And by the way, if Callahan has another bad year, how many years does he get he wants to win.
Jason McIntyre
Can you imagine Callahan going from Joe Burrow in Cincinnati to Will Levis?
Colin Cowherd
Well, yeah, but then getting Sam Darnold who's somewhere in between. Yeah, Callan doesn't win next year. How do you know the Titans aren't moving off him?
Jason McIntyre
They could.
Colin Cowherd
It could certainly be Sam Darnold. If I move down, let's. And I don't have to move down a ton. Let's say the Giants come up, I move down four spots and I get a two and a three and next year a four. Well, those are starters for Tennessee.
Jason McIntyre
Okay, let me push back on Darnold. Gosh, I hate doing this because I liked him when he was drafted by the Jets.
Colin Cowherd
No, it sounds like it.
Jason McIntyre
So now you go from an indoor setting with one of the best play.
Colin Cowherd
Callers to a warm weather southern setting.
Jason McIntyre
Tennessee's warm weather. There's a lot of cold weather gains there. Have you been in Nash Vegas lately?
Colin Cowherd
Nash Vegas is great. My daughter may be moving there. She got a job and I told her you got nice spring, fall, little hot in the summer. Your winters aren't brutal. Get a little snow once in a while.
Jason McIntyre
November, December. He's Gonna be playing cold weather games, not in the finer confines of the dome.
Colin Cowherd
That's a pretty good point. Because if Darnold's quarterback, you'll be playing in February.
Jason McIntyre
Oh, goodness. All right, let's just move on from there. Let's get to the NBA. Colin. This story's been kind of percolating for a little while. Jimmy Butler was susp. Suspended by the Heat for seven games following his trade request and some just not great behavior. Butler's been very unhappy, made it clear he wants to be traded by the deadline. According to Ramona Shelburne, there is palpable dread ahead of Butler's return tonight against the Denver Nuggets. Noting that sources have told her within the locker room that people are weary of the ongoing drama. I just gotta say, we haven't talked about this much. I'm the hue. I'm one of the biggest Jimmy Butler fans out there. His story from where he came from and coming through the JUCO ranks, nobody wanted him out of high school.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, I'm not signing them to a long term contract.
Jason McIntyre
This behavior from him just sucks.
Colin Cowherd
Well, but Pat Riley is basically saying, listen, you were great. It was fun. It's over. I totally agree with Pat Riley and I like Jimmy Butler. Yeah, but Jimmy Butler in his prime, he plays so hard, so physical.
Jason McIntyre
He got into the finals not by himself, but pretty much.
Colin Cowherd
And that, that was the ceiling. But he breaks down. And so Pat Riley's right. I'm not giving him a long term deal. I can like a player but not want to give him a zillion dollars. I like Sam Darnold. I'm not giving him 50 million.
Jason McIntyre
Well, from his point of view, it's like, I've still got some great years left. I just don't want to do it here. Well, we're not winning anything. And I mean, you know these NBA stars. It's been a, it's been a couple of years since we've had one of these, like, totally disgruntled guys. Let me ask you, Steph Curry came out and said we should keep our powder dry. Let's wait for the off season. You think Curry would. I mean, can you imagine Draymond and Jimmy Butler? That's a tough as nails front line, a little undersized.
Colin Cowherd
It would make them better. It would not make them a champion. Listen there. If you watch Cleveland play, OKC play, Boston play, they feel different. And your, your Dallas Mavericks, well, those.
Jason McIntyre
Are great regular season teams that haven't won anything. So they're fired up about Games.
Colin Cowherd
The warriors basically win if Steph is great and don't win if he's not great.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
And so Butler's not a natural scorer, but he, but he is a. He's a two way player. You can get. I don't know what he averages a night, but he's a good player. And I think they want to move off that Wiggins contract is a. Wiggins in the last year of his deal.
Jason McIntyre
I'm not sure but it's like. Yeah, I don't think the heater clamoring for, you know, Wiggins.
Colin Cowherd
Well, they want an expiring. If I was going to say if.
Jason McIntyre
It was an expiring, yeah, that would be more attractive. But you know, I just. The Jimmy Butler stuff is tough, man. Because I'm just telling you his story. This guy's.
Colin Cowherd
Did you see Steph Curry's quote last week? He said let's, let's not do anything that sacrifices the future of the team. That was Steph Curry saying, not interested. That's what I felt Steph was saying, not really interested in the Jimmy Butler deal giving you six picks.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. Take it out. Kaminga and your guy, pods.
Colin Cowherd
I like pods. I like coming. I like them both.
Jason McIntyre
They're also like what, 11th in the West.
Colin Cowherd
Wiggins under contract through 2026. So you'd have to. Miami, you'd have to pay him this year.
Jason McIntyre
It's not that bad.
Colin Cowherd
I don't think Steph Curry wants. I think when Steph Curry said publicly, let's not sacrifice our future, he was letting the front office know and the fans know. I'm not really in a. I'm not really into Jimmy Butler. That's what I felt.
Jason McIntyre
That's a good. That's a, that's a good take.
Colin Cowherd
Hey, this is hot, this happy hour. Listen, we're kind of. We're trying. Hot take happy hour this hour.
Jason McIntyre
No, thanks for letting me know.
Colin Cowherd
Why don't we kind of ad lib in it?
Albert Breer
Yeah, okay.
Colin Cowherd
Are we done? Because I got another take.
Jason McIntyre
Well, fire. Fire.
Colin Cowherd
Go ahead.
Jason McIntyre
I'll take Happy.
Colin Cowherd
I'm going to do Herd. Okay, that's Herd line news. We'll wrap it up. Well, that's the news.
Jason McIntyre
And thanks for stopping by the Herd line.
Colin Cowherd
Apparently when I said yesterday, if you like Shador Sanders and you're the Pittsburgh Steelers and where are they drafting, like 20th, give up TJ Watt, George Pickens, couple of first round draft picks and get Shador Sanders. I said if your scouts like him. I don't know if they do, but all these Pittsburgh fans are like, that is outrageous. Okay, you do what you're doing and bring back Justin Fields. All right, bro, Go for it. How's that working for you offensively? When was your last playoff win? Okay, Because Kansas City and Baltimore and Green Bay, they're taking big swings on quarterbacks. The idea that. It's outrageous. You really want George Pickens around T.J. watts. Great, but gets hurt. Two first round picks if Shador Sanders can play or Cam Ward. And you can only give up two first round picks, a pain in the butt and an aging star. You. Oh, my bad. You do what you're doing. How many playoff wins in eight years? I. I couldn't hear you. A zero. Okay, folks, want to stay in your hometown, never move, never take a swing. I don't have a problem with it. But don't complain when the kids that went to college left came back are doing better. Like. Like, yeah, this idea that. That was a wacky opinion. What's wacky is your offense. Once again, it's embarrassing. How do you think you're going to move from whatever you are in the draft 21? How you think you're going to get to number four? You're not going to give anything up. You're gonna have to give up a couple of first round picks. But the quarterbacks you have now, you're not beating Burrow and you're not beating Lamar consistently. And Mahomes and Harbaugh and Herbert are getting better. BO N are getting better. What if the Rams move up and get Cam Ward? I mean, in the afc. CJ Stroud. What if. What if the Colts, by the way, go get Sam Darnold? That would feel like a playoff team. So the idea that that was some hot take. How are you going to get 21 up the board if you want a quarterback? And, and again, this. All this all comes down to does your scouting department really like Shador or Cam more? But my point was you got to take a swing because what you're doing is not working. Basically, the Steelers are what they were in 20, 22, in desperate need of a quarterback. And it's a bad quarterback class. That's what they say. But if your scouts are like, we think Shador is. Is. Is a B plus, a minus quarterback. We'll take a swing. I mean, you went05 down the stretch. You want to run it back? That's a hot take. We couldn't score. Let's run it back. That's a hot take. Not my brilliant idea. J Max picks next one more herd. The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the iHeartRadio app. Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Don't miss your chance to win free cash Prizes playing Fox Super 6, sponsored by DraftKings. Go to the Fox Sports app to make your picks. One of the questions is who will have the most receiving yards? Cowherd, who you got? Puka Nakua against the Eagles, A.J. brown against the Rams, Amara St. Brown against the Commanders or Terry McLaurin against Detroit.
Colin Cowherd
Amaran St. Brown, Commander Stack the box. I like the Lions receiver to have a big day. Love that. NFL divisional round is here. Also the Natty on Monday. It Is time to bring former newspaper man Jason McIntyre. I like to call him J. Mack. That's how we roll. Here we go, our picks. We like to call this segment tomorrow's headlines. Today, te Chiefs. I got a feeling.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Where you're gonna go on this.
Jason McIntyre
Listen, like you said, favorites have rolled this season. We've kind of been at the forefront of that getting out. We saw it coming. And a big favorite to big this weekend. The headline will be lights, camera, play action. Xavier worthy of an Oscar. I do like the Kansas City Chiefs here, Colin. This round, Mahomes has been utterly dominant. 60 in the division. Around 16 touchdown, 0 picks. A lot of that has to do with, hey, we got a bye week, right? So you get time to prepare, rest up.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Jason McIntyre
And I just want to caution people who were like, hey, you know, the last Chiefs Texans game was kind of close. Colin. Chiefs were only three and a half point favorites. But people forget Mahomes got injured the week before. Remember, he had to come off the field against. I believe it was the Bucs. And people were like, oh, he might not play. The line was light. They still covered in one. I'm just telling you, everything here lines up for Kansas City. Like, I can't find one edge.
Colin Cowherd
I'm the same way that Houston has.
Jason McIntyre
Maybe you could say the defensive pressure from Will Anderson and Hunter coming off the edge. But I like the Chiefs here.
Colin Cowherd
All right, tomorrow's headlines today. I stayed away from this one. I can see two scenarios. Commanders in the Motor City against Detroit.
Jason McIntyre
You know, the audience knows when I say, like the word lucky, you don't love it. I don't like fun. Well, the Washington's lucky. The headline will be Honolulu blooper reel lions. LOL @ Daniels. Deleted scenes. Listen, Washington has been lucky, Colin. Seven wins at the buzzer or in the final second.
Colin Cowherd
That's crazy.
Jason McIntyre
That's insane. And how about this? 86% on fourth downs this season. That's unheard of. That's like one of the best we've seen this century. They have gotten lucky. I know people don't want to hear it now. I like Daniels a lot now. I just don't see how Washington stops this Detroit offense. They're a juggernaut. Yeah, they're coming off the buy. I know Ben Johnson's been interviewing, but.
Colin Cowherd
They'Ll have some tricks in the bag, you know, off a buy. By the way, he's also still flexing because he wants the best job possible.
Jason McIntyre
And the best contract.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. So Ben Johnson's going to flex now here's the interesting.
Jason McIntyre
I haven't heard anyone say this this week. Do you remember Ben Johnson was being flown on the private jet to Washington for an interview and midair he decided, this ain't for me. He could have coached Jaden Daniels this season in Washington. He could have got the job, said no. So interesting wrinkle. I wonder if Washington plays it up. Hey, Jaden, this guy didn't want to coach you. Show him what he's missing. Now again, Detroit's defense is beat up. I think Washington could score. They probably get 20, 30 points. I just don't see them stopping Detroit. They play one of the highest rates of man defense. Okay. Jared Goff is the number one quarterback against man defense in the league by multiple stats. I think the Lions could pick their score. I have them tied to almost every teaser I've got this weekend. So if Detroit goes down, if Casey goes down, I'm going to be sad. Final sack, Colin. Underdogs have eight or more on an 0:14 streak in the playoffs. There has not been a big upset in I think five or six years. So, Washington, you got your work cut out.
Colin Cowherd
Tomorrow's headlines today, Rams at the Eagles. You know I love Philly.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, I'm looking hard. You know, we like underdog dogs. We're trying to find him. The headline will be all in McVane, Eagles ruin Rams run of luck. I just keep looking at this game. You look at the matchups. The only edge I can find for The Rams is McVeigh over the head coach.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, Matt Stafford has struggled on the road in crappy weather outdoors. Yeah, he just struggles.
Jason McIntyre
The Rams offense, five outdoor games in the first half. They scored a total of 32 points. Just slow starts, inclement weather. Now we're hearing maybe snow. And you look at the Rams tendencies, are they going to come out of what they do? They like the two high shell. We're not giving up big plays. Okay? Saquon Barkley will carry 25 times for 150 yards. Like Jalen Hurts will just carry. So I, I just, I don't see a path to victory for the Rams. The one concern would be the Eagles offensive line suddenly has its worst game of the season versus wrecking things. Hurts still uncertain from the concussion. And by the way, he was not sharp against the Packers.
Colin Cowherd
Right.
Jason McIntyre
His numbers were kind of down. But I, I just, I don't see the Rams pulling the upset. I'm on the Eagles here.
Colin Cowherd
Tomorrow's headlines today, Ravens and Bills. This is the biggie everybody's talking about.
Jason McIntyre
Finally a game that could be good. Every, everything else could be a blowout. It's just tough because I like one team first half and the other team full game. The headline will be Shakir tail feather. Raven Vaughn with the wind. I know you know that. Check your tail feather. So I went Ravens first half because they're an awesome start team. But Buffalo, full game. I'm on Josh Allen. So everything McDermott has talked about, he's gonna have to change the way he does defense.
Colin Cowherd
Right.
Jason McIntyre
But how about this? Lamar Jackson's played seven playoff games. Five of them he's been under 200 yards passing. What does Lamar do? He wants to hand off and run the football.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Jason McIntyre
And now he's got Derrick Henry.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Jason McIntyre
Buffalo has like kind of a light box. They don't have huge defensive tackles. Yeah, they're going to have to commit more guys to the run. And, and is that going to work on the back end? Well, Zay Flowers is out. Are you afraid of Bateman? I'll just say Christian Benford, lock him.
Colin Cowherd
Up one on one.
Jason McIntyre
You're getting no safety help. I say, well, we like our chances and dare Lamar to beat you because if you let him and Derrick Henry beat you, they will, you know. So I, I, I do think McDermott changes tendencies. If he doesn't, I think Baltimore is going to Arrowhood next week.
Colin Cowherd
Finally, tomorrow's headlines. Today, Buckeye's a big favorite. Loaded roster against the Fighting Irish.
Jason McIntyre
Jay, we're the upsets. You gotta have an upset. Come on, somebody. Some underdog has to rise up. The headline will be the Great Flatsby Buckeyes End the Gilded Era. Ryan Day. Look at that Art. We got an awesome team in the back. They're putting up stuff. Sorry. I like Ohio State. Yeah, you know, I know they looked a little.
Colin Cowherd
How about low scoring game though? No blowout, low scoring.
Jason McIntyre
I just hope Marcus Freeman could keep it close, you know, like you want a good game. By the way, I think favorites are 5, 0 against the spread in the last five national championship games. We just see a lot of blowouts in this spot last year. I mean, Michigan ran him out of the building in the first quarter.
Colin Cowherd
Right.
Jason McIntyre
If you remember that game. And there's a world where Riley Leonard has to win this game for Notre Dame.
Colin Cowherd
You know, I love him.
Jason McIntyre
You like to call him Josh Allen. He's gonna have to put on that cape.
Colin Cowherd
You see Riley Leonard? I see Josh Allen.
Jason McIntyre
Well, I see Jack Sawyer coming off the edge. Jack Sawyer is an awesome player. I think he's a first round pick, by the way. And let's see if Jeremiah Smith bounces back.
Colin Cowherd
Hey, today's targets, Today's Jack Sawyer. Mean, mean guy. That's rush. I'm sorry.
Jason McIntyre
Oh, okay, yes, I know that song. Okay. But in all honesty, like Jeremiah Smith had three targets, one catch, three yards. He's the best receiver in college football. You think they're going to force feed him early to get him back? Hey, sorry. Sorry we couldn't feed you last game. Yeah, I know he's not a diva and complaining. Yeah, but Notre Dame has a good secondary. Notre Dame had a good, good run game. They're gonna have to really grind it out, control clock. I just don't know that you can do that. Still waiting for a Will Howard debacle, if you will. The way he played against Michigan, he's been pretty damn good in the playoff. Can Notre Dame rattle him? Can Freeman? Listen, if Market Freeman wins this game, I need to see him interviewing for multiple NFL teams next week. Colin? I don't know if he could pull it off, but if he does as a huge underdog. And by the way, you can do like a teaser. With Ohio State under a field goal, Detroit under a field goal. What's the other, what's the first game? Kansas City under. You could do college and NFL. So you can match those and have a fun teaser or moneyline parlay, whatever you want. But I'm hoping for good games. Colin?
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, it has been a very strange year betting football games. The favorites in landslides are winning a college and pro. And so I have pivoted. Now last week I'm going, I mean, I probably should be on Detroit. I just think Jaden Daniels will give Detroit's defense trouble.
Jason McIntyre
No doubt about it.
Colin Cowherd
But I, you know, now I'm thinking to myself as I say this, Ben Johnson's gonna have trick plays left and right now. Will he out think the room and get too clever? But he wants to flex the Raiders. He's their number one target. He's one or two with Chicago. Jacksonville may want him. Ben Johnson comes out with the old Statue of Liberty. I mean, he's going to bring out, he going to bring out the playbook.
Jason McIntyre
How about this? Ben Johnson scores 50 against Washington. Yesterday's price is not today's price. Sorry, Vegas.
Colin Cowherd
That's what he's thinking.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Colin Cowherd
I mean coaches, they know what's going on. Whether you're ordering wings for the game, whipping up a seven layer dip or ordering pizza. There's something about football that makes me want to eat. And this football season, Uber Eats has the best deals for me on game day. Food no matter what I'm craving from two for one pizza to buy one, get one Wings. Uber Eats will be dropping new deals each week all season long. I'm in Uber Eats, the official on demand delivery partner of the NFL. Order now for game day. Terms and conditions apply. Colin Cowherd opens the discussion with a focus on the Dallas Cowboys’ unexpected departure of head coach Mike McCarthy. He shares his theory on the possible reasons behind McCarthy's exit, suggesting a culmination of contract disagreements and team performance issues.
Colin Cowherd: "Dallas may be a tough place to win. Is that possible?" ([03:12])
Albert Breer expands on this by highlighting McCarthy's dissatisfaction with being in a contract year alongside his assistant coaches, which may have influenced his decision to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Albert Breer: "Mike McCarthy was looking at the landscape and decided there's a better opportunity to build somewhere else." ([04:20])
Timestamp: [05:05]
The conversation shifts to the Chicago Bears, where Colin and Albert analyze the team's current struggles, particularly the weakness in the running back position and missed opportunities in the draft.
Colin Cowherd: "I just don't think in a world of Philly and Detroit and the Rams and Green Bay and Washington, I don't think they have enough firepower." ([05:35])
Albert Breer discusses the Bears' considerations in potentially promoting Marcus Freeman to a higher coaching position, though he expresses skepticism about Freeman’s readiness for an NFL head coaching role.
Albert Breer: "If you're going to lose your offensive coordinator, say, after two or three years... I don't know that Chicago is a spot." ([07:00])
Timestamp: [08:00]
Ben Johnson's interest in the Raiders' head coaching position becomes a focal point, especially with Tom Brady’s influence within the organization. Colin speculates on Johnson being the frontrunner given Brady’s endorsement.
Colin Cowherd: "I think Ben Johnson would probably be his number one choice." ([09:05])
Albert Breer reinforces this by explaining how Brady’s partnership with the Raiders has reshaped the team’s attractiveness to potential coaches, making Johnson's candidacy more appealing.
Albert Breer: "Ben Johnson is looking at that Raider job differently now because of the organizational changes." ([09:14])
Timestamp: [14:21]
The discussion moves to the New York Jets, debating whether to retain Sam Darnold or pursue J.J. McCarthy. Colin expresses doubts about Darnold’s fit in the Jets' warm-weather setting.
Colin Cowherd: "They're gonna get J.J. McCarthy, they're gonna let Sam go." ([21:11])
Albert Breer examines the Jets' strategic options, suggesting that the team prioritizes building around a coherent quarterback plan rather than making impulsive coaching hires.
Albert Breer: "They want somebody who has a coherent plan. So, yeah, I mean, I think they started with the leader of men thing, which Marcus Freeman 100% fits." ([07:45])
Timestamp: [18:20]
Transitioning to the NBA, Colin and Jason discuss Jimmy Butler’s suspension and trade request from the Miami Heat. Colin voices his support for Butler despite the ongoing drama.
Colin Cowherd: "I'm one of the biggest Jimmy Butler fans out there." ([23:08])
Jason McIntyre criticizes Butler's behavior but acknowledges his impact on the team’s performance, debating whether the Heat should secure Butler’s services long-term.
Jason McIntyre: "This behavior from him just sucks." ([23:11])
Timestamp: [38:50]
The episode delves into the upcoming Ohio State versus Notre Dame game. Colin emphasizes Ohio State's talent advantage and questions Notre Dame's defensive capabilities against a powerhouse offense.
Colin Cowherd: "Ohio State clearly has a huge advantage in talent and skill." ([05:46])
Jason McIntyre analyzes the potential strategies, highlighting Marcus Freeman’s influence and expressing skepticism about Notre Dame's ability to contain Ohio State’s offense.
Jason McIntyre: "If Marcus Freeman wins this game, I need to see him interviewing for multiple NFL teams next week." ([39:35])
Timestamp: [33:04]
In the segment titled "Tomorrow's Headlines Today," Colin and Jason make predictions for upcoming NFL games. They discuss the Kansas City Chiefs' dominance, the Texans' injury woes, and potential outcomes for teams like the Ravens and Bills.
Jason McIntyre: "Everything here lines up for Kansas City. I can't find one edge." ([34:01])
Colin Cowherd: "I think Chiefs are going to win without those two receivers and mix in. They'll get blown out." ([19:12])
Timestamp: [41:43]
As the episode wraps up, Colin reflects on the unpredictability of the current NFL season, emphasizing the importance of strategic coaching hires and the impact of star players on team dynamics.
