Dion Dawkins
Now let's get this party started.
Matt Mosley
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. Hour three, 15 minutes. Dion Dawkins from the Buffalo Bills will be joining us. End of the show. Matt Mosley on the Cowboys and the situation in Dallas. We've talked a lot about Chicago or New Orleans with Mike McCarthy. We haven't talked about the Cowboys and what they're going to do. I don't buy Belich. I don't think it's a good enough job for Belichick. I thought if Buffalo or Philadelphia lost in the first round, I thought, oh, there's a chance Bill would take that job. But I don't, I don't think Dallas is the play here. I really don't. I mean it's, they just don't have enough personnel and the division. You watch Jaden Daniels last night and you know Philadelphia's roster, you're battling for third. The Dallas Cowboys are for the next year or two. So let's just give you an update. J. Mac, everybody. So it happened seven minutes into our show is that Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys could not agree in a deal. Now, Mike McCarthy changed agents to a guy named Don Yee, who I kind of know. I've done an event with him or two before. Smart, capable, knows the market. Tom Brady's agent. My take is McCarthy wanted five years or a long guaranteed deal. If he was going to rebuild this cowboy team. It is the worst running back room in the league. They have one elite offensive playmaker. If CD Lamb pulled a hammy, they got nothing to work with the offensive lines in a rebuild and was not good by the end of the year. I like Micah Parsons. I've suggested they should trade Micah Parsons and get a second first round pick. It's a weaker draft at the top. You could get a first round pick for Micah. You'd have Dak. CD Lamps gotta pay Dak all that money. Nobody wants that contract except Jerry Jones. You gotta make Dak work, get a second first pick. I would go get that receiver from Arizona if he was available. I would do something. Move up if you have to, but you got to get another weapon for this offense. And I think Mike McCarthy, I think he would. I think he works almost anywhere. I think he would be the best person arguably to fix the Steelers. And I do think he is the best person to fix the Bears. I think Chicago should not take a risk. Even though I like Aaron Glenn, Ben Johnson, Liam Cohen, I think it's too big of a lift. I want a guy that's had a meddling owner in Jerry Jones or a guy that's had a difficult quarterback to deal with. Aaron Rodgers. So we don't know Caleb Williams, a pretty emotional guy. Some say he can be difficult. I don't know if that's true. I don't think it is. But he's dealt with difficult. Old Brett Favre was difficult. Young Aaron Rodgers can be prickly. He's dealt with some ego. He's dealt with some rigidity. Also Jerry Jones. Mike McCarthy's dealt with an owner who calls himself the general manager. So Chicago, I mean, Mike comes in with a wealth of experience. He's dealt with legendary quarterbacks who are old, ascending star quarterbacks who, you know, get in their fields. He's dealt with an overpaid quarterback who is regressing. He's dealt with a meddling owner in the Jones family. Mike's dealt with a lot. I'm not taking a coordinator in Chicago.
Colin Cowherd
Ooh.
Matt Mosley
I'm good on the chalkboard, the whiteboard. Okay, great. Are you good with an old owner? Are you good with a meddling president? Are you good? That's what the Chicago Bear job is. Mike McCarthy is uniquely qualified based on his life football resume. He is qualified to work with a dysfunctional organization. These young, These young coaches are just trying to get. Build a culture, get the respect in the locker room. Mike's had to go upstairs, deal with Jerry, placate Jerry, play the game, deal with the big market media. Mike's qualified now. He may want the New Orleans job, which I don't think is a bad job. I think the Bears, Chicago is different. So I thought the best job was the Patriots. It was taken. And I think once the Patriot job was taken by Mike Vrabel, I think don yee, Mike McCarthy's new agent, said, we got all the leverage in the world here, and they do. So Mike McCarthy's not young and hip. He's not old in an alpha. He's just a good football coach. He's a B plus, A minus football coach and he's an offensive coach. Jay Mack and I argued about this. Number one thing you got to do. You not only got to get Caleb Williams right, you got to get the O line right. And I don't trust defensive coaches and O lines. It took McDermott forever in Buffalo. Pete Carroll struggled with this in Seattle. Tomlin has struggled for years in Pittsburgh. If you look at many of the O lines, look at Sean Payton in Denver. By the end of his first year, it was a top 10o line. He took it over. It was a mess this year. It was very good. Andy Reid rebuilt that puppy two or three times. Sean McVeighs rebuilt his offensive line a couple different times. You start looking at these offensive lines. It's a lot of offensive coaches who have a feel and a sensibility for it. Tomlin's own lines in Pittsburgh, they're as bad now as they've been in five years. He can't figure it out. So the Bears personnel is much better than Dallas offensive personnel. It's not close. They have two tight ends I like. They have three receivers I like Roma, Dunzale, Pop. Next year. My guest, DJ Moore, Keenan Allen. I like their back. Swift. I, I think. I think they have good personnel and I think their old line in Chicago is better than how they performed. But they had a defensive coach, Matt Eberfluss. I think he's the Bears higher. And Mike doesn't have a ton of ego. You're not getting a lot of ego. And again, that he has dealt with quarterbacks who have maintenance far of an Aaron, different guys, but there's some maintenance there. Not really with Dak at all, but. Well, if Caleb is got a little maintenance, I don't know that to be true. He's dealt with it. Here's Matt Hasselbeck earlier on. Mike McCarthy moving to the Cowboys.
Matt Hasselbeck
It feels like Mike McCarthy is just kind of betting on himself. You Know, he looks out there, he realizes what he is as a coach and what his resume is. And then also I think probably most importantly, his resume working with quarterbacks. His first ever quarterback coaching job in the NFL was with the Kansas City Chiefs coaching Joe Montana. And it started with Joe Montana, and it runs right through. Look it up. It's pretty impressive. Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers. And so, like, I think if you think about the jobs that are out there and the quarterback help that needs to happen, Mike McCarthy's the perfect guy. And I think when it comes to these negotiations as well, he's not just thinking about himself. He's thinking about the job security of his entire staff. And that's probably where he kind of bowed up for his staff and said, hey, you know, we want more. We want more commit than you're offering for the rest of the guys here.
Matt Mosley
And I also, I think you have to look at this one thing that's always been true in the NFL. General managers have no leverage, and coaches almost never do. Great coaches get fired all the time. Belichick, Andy Reid, I mean, Marty Schottenheimer. I mean, great coaches get let go. It is so the only time you have leverage as a coach is when you're out of work the minute you're hired. The owner controls it. Mike McCarthy is the rare coach that has a good job and has total leverage over his owner. That, and you know, owners, when they have leverage, they squeeze the coach and the gm. So when you get leverage as a coach, use it. Mike Frable used it. Got more money in New England. Harbaugh used it. Got more money with the Chargers. Use it. You get it very infrequently. And so Mike McCarthy, I guarantee you, once Vrabel got that job, McCarthy said, think about this. So Vrabel gets the job. Was it yesterday? Early morning, he gets the job. So McCarthy sees that, and then he watches Jaden Daniels last night. Do you think it's a coincidence that on the morning that Vrabel gets the New England job and at night, Jaden Daniels is magical? Mike McCarthy's like timeout. He calls Don Yee, his agent, and says, we're not in the same stratosphere as Philadelphia as a roster. And Jaden Daniels may be better than Lamar Jackson. He may be Mahomes 2.0. I got Dak on a $60 million a year deal. And Donny goes, I'm guessing, ask for everything. And Mike goes, I want five years, six, a coaching option, knowing he's not going to get it because he Looks up and goes, oh, Caleb Williams. I don't have to pay him for four years. Chicago today has got its dysfunction. It's a better roster and arguably a better job than Dallas. Now I don't know what Dallas is going to do. I would look at Mike Tomlin. I think their personnel is better on the defensive side. And Tomlin and McCarthy both have a ring. Tomlin's more beloved, got more alpha, more people kind of think he's the guy. But McCarthy's an offensive coach and this also needs to be considered. Mike McCarthy had no bad offensive lines in Green Bay. He did a good job. He didn't know it was develop a great running game, but they had good old lines and they protected their quarterback. It's not just helping Caleb Williams. You got to get that old line right. They've been drafting online for three years in Chicago that it was bad. You got to get that thing right. And I trust McCarthy more than I would the other coordinators. So Dion Dawkins of the Bills around the corner. More on that. The Dallas Cowboys are looking for a coach. Let me read this from Jordan Schultz. This is hot off the press because the Cowboys waited a week to move on from McCarthy. Jerry Jones also missed the window to request interviews with candidates on a buy, like Ben Johnson, like Aaron Glenn. If Dallas wants to talk to them, they'll now have to wait until. Until Detroit season ends. A self inflicted setback by GM Jerry Jones because they waited a week because they didn't make a move. Just like they waited on the DAC contract and had to pay him more than he's worth. And now because they waited on Mike McCarthy, if they. The two best coordinator candidates out there are both in Detroit. You don't get to interview either one until the season's over. And by the way, I don't know if Philadelphia can go to Detroit and win. I know Washington's gonna struggle. I don't think Philadelphia, the way Jalen Hurts is playing right now. I don't know.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, you might as well just.
Matt Mosley
Get out of the Aaron Glenn, Ben Johnson business. You're not getting them. You're not getting them.
Colin Cowherd
So.
J. Mac
That'S absolutely brutal.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, he just.
J. Mac
Jerry misplayed it so badly, just like he did with Dak's contract. Remember, he should have signed it way earlier and ends up paying more because he waited. And now he thought he had Mike McCarthy in the bag and fumbled it. And now he's looking around and you can't interview. Oh my gosh, that is embarrassing.
Matt Mosley
So now Will Jerry Jones, who's never loved paying his coaches top dollar, doesn't feel like he does. Will Jerry Jones overreach and go say Belichick, save me?
J. Mac
Not happening. No way is Belichick leaving North Carolina for Dallas. No shot. Maybe he's got to overpay like Deion Sanders or Sark.
Matt Mosley
We don't know if Sark's not taking that job and I would.
J. Mac
Who's taking this job? Liam Cohen, maybe.
Matt Mosley
I'm telling you, if I'm a candidate, I got one receiver. I need to rebuild my own line and I have an owner who calls himself gm. I'm in a division what looks like the next great superstar quarterback Jaden Daniels and the best GM and arguably one of the top three owners in Jeffrey Lurie in Philadelphia. I'm telling you, I would take the. You think I'm crazy on this? I would take Kraft and Drake May. In a heartbeat. In a heartbeat.
J. Mac
I just don't know who goes to Dallas, who wants his job. My big thing is the owner coming out after like what, three days a week doing radio interviews, meeting the media. That can't help. I think that's a turn off to a lot of coaches.
Matt Mosley
I don't think he's going to hire Liam Cohen. I think Jerry's going to overreach. Now, I. Keep your eye on Mike Tomlinson.
J. Mac
Pittsburgh would have to run off.
Matt Mosley
No, no. Pittsburgh could have the street.
J. Mac
Were they going to trade Mike Tomlin?
Matt Mosley
Well, I mean, it's happened. Didn't Gruden get traded as a coach?
J. Mac
Well, Gruden's an interesting one because he had a good run in Vegas, I believe, and then they traded him to Tampa and then he won the Super Bowl.
Unknown Speaker
Right.
J. Mac
The next year. Yeah, I. I don't. I don't see that happening.
Matt Mosley
Oh, this is.
J. Mac
This is delicious. It's gonna be a fun week. Colin. I don't. I just don't think it's a great job.
Matt Mosley
I don't either.
J. Mac
Marcus Freeman, could they go after him?
Matt Mosley
Oh, I. Hey, Chicago may go after Marcus Freeman.
J. Mac
Well, there's a report over the weekend that they are interested in retalking to him.
Matt Mosley
Oh, Marcus Freeman right now?
J. Mac
No, he's preparing.
Matt Mosley
Notre Dame has no business being in the natty.
J. Mac
He's not going to be interview. I can't imagine preparing for now, but.
Matt Mosley
After the game, I mean, Marcus Freeman's in the national championship with one five star player and a rigid academic umbrella. Yeah, I mean that. That is the coach of the year.
J. Mac
A lot of money came in on Notre Dame in the last 24 hours. I don't know what to make of that. I haven't. I don't have any money on this game.
Matt Mosley
All the pressure in the world is on Ohio State. Marcus Freeman is playing with no pressure. And if you watch the Bills this weekend, Notre Dame's quarterback looks a little like Buffalo's quarterback. His name is Riley Leonard. Got a little Josh Allen feel to him. I told you, I'm betting. I'm betting Notre Dame.
J. Mac
Really?
Matt Mosley
Well, all the pressure's on. Oh, you know, so did Texas unlock.
J. Mac
Something and how to slow down this offense? Because Ohio State's offense didn't do much. Okay, that was 2114 with, you know what, two minutes left. And they got one minute left in the game.
Matt Mosley
Let me just throw a name out there. Lincoln Riley. What?
J. Mac
Isn't the buyout like $70 million from USC?
Matt Mosley
No, I mean, they'll, they'll, they'll figure something out. If Jerry pay. Jerry Jones, he bought a yacht worth $400 million. I'm sure he can afford a USC football coach.
J. Mac
Lincoln Riley.
Matt Mosley
I mean, Jerry's doing. Jerry's doing cameos on Landman. He's got extra cash. DM Dawkins next to her.

He'll join us in from Dallas. There's a lot of interest in that. We Talked about Mike McCarthy, Bears. Who should Dallas hire? I think you have to talk to Mike Tomlin. That would be somebody I'm interested in. I'm not joking. Lincoln Riley is from that area and the truth is he doesn't like recruiting much as far as I can tell. But he knows how to coach, I think. Listen, you're out on Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson, the two best coordinators. You can't interview him until the Lions lose. You're out on Vrabel and you're losing McCarthy. So you're not going to get the best coordinator or the best coach. Belichick, you could take a swing. I don't think the job's good enough for Belichick. Tomlin could go to tv. If I was Mike Tomlin, I think I would probably go to tv. If he leaves Pittsburgh, there's no guarantee he would. In fact, 50, 50, I'd say Mike Tomlin stays in Pittsburgh because the Rooney family is pretty conservative with free Agents, I mean, they brag in, you know, in Pittsburgh, it's a big deal. You know, hey, we've only had three coaches in 55 years, which always feels like you're saying, I've only had three cars in 55 years. Get to a dealership. They've got GPS now and power steering. You know, keys aren't even keys anymore. Like, I. I kind of feel like the Tomlin thing, everybody sees it, it's played out. And he'll be a rock star on television, but, you know, Pittsburgh's probably not making a move on Mike. Let's go to Dion Dawkins. He is the all pro left tackle, anchors an offensive line with a run game, and he is joining us now. Okay, let's. Let's start. First of all, tell me as. As much as you can, what do you feel like 36 hours after a football game? What do you feel like right now?
Dion Dawkins
Sore. I feel sore. Tired. Body's tired. But we feel good. I feel good. You know, mentally I'm happy because we got a playoff win, but body is sore. Body is definitely sore after a battle like yesterday and after a playoff game.
Matt Mosley
So when you face Baltimore coming up, listen, there's an argument you're the two best teams right now in the afc. Is it. Is it different preparing for Baltimore because you do not want to give Derrick Henry and Lamar the football? You want drives. There's almost an argument it's better to score slowly than quickly. Are they difficult or different to prepare for?
Dion Dawkins
I would say yes. Like, I could lie and say, no, it's no different. Da da da da da. But you have to prepare different for every opponent because every opponent is different. We understand what Lamar has. We understand what Derrick Henry brings. We understand that Marlon is having a great season. We understand that their D line is continually getting after the quarterback. So, yes, there's definitely plans. There will definitely be plays to keep the ball in our hands because we want the ball. Who doesn't want the ball in their MVP's hand? I want the ball in Josh Allen's hand. If I have to stay on the football field for 60 minutes, hey, it is in what it is. But yes, you definitely have to prepare in different notes in different ways to keep the ball with us instead of it with them. To MVP and caliber players like, you have to be smart with what you're doing.
Matt Mosley
You know, it's interesting. You guys now have two really good tight ends and a big time running game. Dion. They always say offensive linemen would rather push than backpedal. When you guys go on these drives, this is the first time you guys. The last two years, Dion, have had a big time top five running back. Tell me the psychology of that. Going into a game knowing I don't have to backpedal as much.
Dion Dawkins
Man, I'm gonna tell you the truth. You never know. Like, we. We backpedal just as much. But with a guy like James Cook and Johnson and Ray, going forward is always easier than going backwards for an offensive lineman. But in the sense like this, when it's playoff like football, I'm going to just tell you the honest truth. If I got a backpedal 25, 35, 45, 50 plays a game, I'm for it. We're all for it. We understand what is at stake, and whatever is meant to be, we shall do it. But it's always good to go forward. It's easier to throw your weight forward than throw your weight back, you know? Yeah, it's a. It's a good deal. But, yeah, you know, driving that train is definitely easier than, you know, sliding that sled.
Matt Mosley
When you look at the way you've been playing, in fact, about the only time, the only times this year I question you, The Rams game, L.A. basically played a perfect football game, and you guys had to fly 3,000 miles, and they literally were perfect. It was a. It was one of those games we said on the air the next day, I'm like, I don't think the Rams can play better. Outside of that, you guys have had a streak. When you've played really well, go to your entire Buffalo career. Is this the best you've ever felt about your team at this point in the season?
Dion Dawkins
Yes, this is the best that, that I felt. This is the best that the team has felt. This is the best that I've seen. Josh, this is the best that I've seen. McDermott. This is the best that I've seen. My coordinator and with having a quarterback with his head calm and his head on, you know, just calm, cool and collect all day, every day, that takes a big toll on the team. He comes into work every day positive. Everybody is just in a positive streak. I would call it, you know, controlled excitement, controlled or consistent execution. Like, everybody is just at a consistent pace. And this is definitely the best that I've seen, the best that I felt. This is the best that I've seen this Buffalo Bills football team be prepared and honestly ring that bell. When that bell is rang and when it's called for to ring, it's been going in the Right direction because everybody has been flying on a consistent altitude, and I'm happy for it. You know, James is upbeat, Josh is upbeat. McDermott, the O line, the D line. Everybody is doing what they're supposed to do. So, yes, this is the best Buffalo Bills team I have ever been a part of in my eight seasons that I've been here.
Matt Mosley
By the way, Brady, the offensive coordinator, may leave. May. You know, may. Whatever do you tell me from the play calling, how is he different, your offensive coordinator, than previous coordinators? Is there a different tempo with him? What are his tempo tendencies compared to other coordinators in Buffalo?
Dion Dawkins
Well, see, Brady's not going nowhere. He's not going nowhere. He's staying with the boys. I'm calling it right now. He's staying with the boys. But why? What makes him different is he's just on our level. We're close in age. He's. He's. He's like, he just understands. Like, he just understands like he's a Florida boy. So he has that hip to him and he has that upbeat, and he's just a consistent flow. He understands that he's not perfect. He comes into meetings, he tells on himself. He says, look, this is not just on you guys. This one was on me. And for a group of men that's trying to execute at every level and at every moment of a football game, he takes ownership when it's his time to take ownership. And because he does, we respect it. And because we respect it, we want to play for him in a way that we not to have never played for another coordinator. But he makes it easy to play for him as well as the O line coach. And like, everybody does what they're supposed to do. It's not just, oh, it's the player's fault. Oh, it's you guys fault. Oh, like, you know, it could have been this, but you guys ain't do that. No, he understands that. I could have did this better or I did this better, and this is why. And we won. This is why, and we lost. Let's come together and let's pray about it and let's keep it pushing. That's what we respect the most from Joe, and he consistently does it. And we just tip our hat to it, like, you know what? We rock with you, Joe. And that's literally what it is. But I'm gonna call it right now. He's staying with the boys. He loves Buffalo, he loves the Wings, and he loves being Joe Brady for Josh Allen. I'm calling it right now.
Matt Mosley
Yeah, he also loves Dion Dawkins, James Cook Kincaid, Josh Allen. A lot of things to like with that Buffalo offense.
Colin Cowherd
My man.
Matt Mosley
Get rest, be ready for next weekend. We love having you on. Thanks, Dion.
Dion Dawkins
My dog. Appreciate you, brother.
Matt Mosley
Oh, as always, he is a great one. And yeah, I mean, if there's an offensive course like Ben Johnson and Brady, be careful what job you take. You're going to get one Lions offensive line in your career. Ben Johnson can go anywhere. He'll never have a better O line and run game than in Detroit. And there are no other Josh Allens on the market. You got to sit there. You can have a great pension and a great career in Buffalo. Asking Josh Allen to put the cape on every Sunday, that. That is a job. Be very used with discretion. Leaving Buffalo. And they do have good wings. I told you, my wife years ago had to travel Minneapolis and Buffalo and Rochester. She always said, nicest people in the world in Buffalo.
J. Mac
I don't know if I told you this. My wife was in sales before we had kids and she would have to go to Buffalo. And she came back twice and was like, I could see us living in Buffalo. It's amazing there. It's beautiful. Now, she didn't go there in the death of winter.
Matt Mosley
You know, we got to get over.
J. Mac
Winter that pretty quickly. I was like, that's. That's not happening, babe. No, we're not doing that.
Matt Mosley
You can't just live your whole life in places where you get to wear a tank top in April.
J. Mac
But I look good in tank tops, so I rocked them.
Matt Mosley
Not as good as you think, maybe.
J. Mac
Oh, coward.
Matt Mosley
J. Mac with the news. No, no, no, no.
Dion Dawkins
Turn on the news.
Matt Mosley
This is the Herd line news.
J. Mac
That jab must have been because you're up so upset. We're about to talk about Bo Nix's failure.
Matt Mosley
Little turbulent, little bumpy.
J. Mac
Listen, they took a 7 nothing lead early. Oh, boy, here we go. And then they did nothing the rest of the way. It wasn't quite the Mac Jones at Buffalo game I predicted, but it was in the same ballpark. Nevertheless, afterward, Bo Nix was optimistic about Denver's future going forward.
Matt Mosley
It's a lot to grow from, a lot to build from. I'm excited where we are. Like I said, I'm excited to be here at this time because there's, you know, our trajectory is going up and I'm excited for it. A lot of things, you know, we have out in front of us. A lot to look forward to, which, you know, I'm pumped about. He'll be Fine. That was not a winnable game, J. Mac. Not a winnable game.
J. Mac
Not to pick nits here or go after people. But Patrick Certain had a rough one, huh? Blatant holding of Kincaid in the end zone. Referee standing a foot away. Magically doesn't see it. Certain got cooked by Curtis Samuel on that long touchdown.
Matt Mosley
Curtis did have a quite a day.
J. Mac
Josh Allen was picking on the safety, number six, who's one of the worst safeties in the league.
Matt Mosley
You know, we all knew Denver.
J. Mac
Yeah. They overachieved.
Matt Mosley
No. And by the way, so did the Chargers. They're going to be fine.
J. Mac
Well, you know, every year three or four teams don't make the playoffs again. Chargers identified.
Matt Mosley
The Chargers need another five players. They'll get them in the draft. Harbaugh out of college. How about Harbaugh's draft this year? Everybody was good. They got two corners in the fifth round. They're good.
J. Mac
Well, some Chargers fans are upset about not taking neighbors and taking Joe Alton said whatever.
Matt Mosley
Joe Alt had a bad game. He's a very good player. He's a rookie tackle.
J. Mac
If I ask you now, January, lot to happen. Draft, free agency, coaches we already identified. Steelers are not going back to the playoffs next year. Do you think Denver is?
Matt Mosley
It's hard to take three teams from the same division. It'll be a struggle.
J. Mac
Knicks was good. We saw C.J. stroud have a great freshman year, rookie year, and then regress big time. I don't. We'll see what happens with Knicks.
Matt Mosley
I trust the Chargers more. I think. I think. I think Herbert Harbaugh.
J. Mac
Yeah. Now listen, we like Sean Payton. I'm sure we'll see him at the Super Bowl. Not his best game.
Matt Mosley
I think it's hard when you go on the road and you know you have the second best team and you got to take chances. You got to fake punts. Fake.
J. Mac
The fake punt was great.
Matt Mosley
I love it. You got it. I mean, you're not going to go in there and just go toe to toe. You're going to take big swings. That's just the reality of Green Bay going into Philly. Missing Christian Watson and Jordan Loves banged up. Jordan loves trying to make plays. You fumble the opening kickoff, so you're behind the eight ball, so you just. I mean, I'm going to defend Jordan. Love Herbert Bonix. You're on the road against a better team. I mean, you just got to go out and take swings.
J. Mac
Now there is the alternative. Dallas got smashed in the playoffs last year and they follow that up with an awful year so somebody who made the playoffs this year could. Absolutely.
Matt Mosley
I think it's Pittsburgh. I think Pittsburgh's going backwards.
J. Mac
Don't disagree. Next up, let's go back to Commander's Bucks, which was surprisingly best game of the weekend. Tampa was up four with 12 minutes left. And then this Baker happened like a jet sweep. He tried to hand it off to McMillan.
Matt Mosley
I don't.
J. Mac
I can't really tell. Who's that on. McMillan is super fast. They credited Baker with the fumble. It gave Washington great field position, and of course they end up with a go ahead touchdown. Here's Baker on that fumble.
Matt Mosley
Yeah, I mean, it just. It comes back to me just timing it up correctly. First one all year that happened on. So obviously timing of it not great, being backed up. Defense had just done a hell of a job getting us the ball. Another fourth down stop and, yeah, unfortunate, but that falls on me.
J. Mac
We talk a lot about Will Levis gives the football away. And sometimes you get Rogers League of giveaways, right?
Matt Mosley
Who?
J. Mac
Baker Mayfield.
Matt Mosley
Yeah, Baker's always. I mean, Baker gives the ball away.
J. Mac
That's tied for last in total or I guess first in interception.
Matt Mosley
No, no, Baker. There's. This is the limitation. Baker tends to play on emotion. He can be reckless. He.
Colin Cowherd
He's a gunslinger.
Matt Mosley
I mean, he's like a less talented Brett Favre. That's who he is. And that's fine. That's what Tampa needed. I think he fits Tampa, but he.
J. Mac
Didn'T have a bad game. Let's be clear.
Matt Mosley
Sometimes. Sometimes you lose because somebody else is magical. It's not on Baker. I mean, the bottom line is it not every loss there's a big somebody to blame. Jaden Daniels is otherworldly. Baker was fine.
J. Mac
And again, you don't want to get into the play by play, but Tampa fans are unhappy. There was a. A play call on third down where they tried to have Baker run it stuffed and then they went to. It just. It was like, what do we do? Bucky Irving is cooking. That's a tough one for Tampa. Washington is going to Denver eight and I'm sorry, Detroit, eight and a half point underdog.
Matt Mosley
I like Detroit.
J. Mac
It'll be Washington's third straight road game.
Matt Mosley
Yeah, I like Detroit. I think Detroit's going to roll.
J. Mac
Well, I did on my pod. I looked into some of the numbers. Detroit has really struggled defending running quarterbacks. Josh Allen had a day. Anthony Anthony Richardson, Baker Mayfield in the. In the win. So that could be an issue for Detroit. Remember, you know where I'm headed, right? Okay. Final story. College football. Colin, Ohio State. How about that win over Texas Friday night? Really thrilling stuff. They will face Notre Dame in the national championship a week from today. The game was sealed on this incredible Jack Sawyer strip sack of his former roommate. What a story. Quinn ewers took it 83 yards to the house for the GL game. Game clinching touchdown. That was a phenomenal play by Jack Sawyer. Gets the sack, scoops it up and races. I think he said he was going to black out around the 30 yard line. He was so exhausted. It's been quite a run since that Michigan loss for the Buckeyes.
Matt Mosley
Yeah, it's. You know, they look at it as the worst day of the year. Buckeye fans. It was actually the jet fuel that this program needed and they were very conservative in that game. And since then they're not as conservative. They're throwing the ball down the field. Look at, look at Jack saw.
J. Mac
He is just win when Jeremiah Smith has one catch for three yards. That's a loaded team and they are stacked.
Matt Mosley
Yeah, I mean they're. I think Notre Dame is going to keep it close.
J. Mac
I don't know how they move the ball offensively like that. That front.
Matt Mosley
I think the game is going to be very low scoring. Now Ohio State may pull away late, but I think in the first half bet the under bet low scoring. I think it's a. I think it's 1310 at half or like, I mean and literally 107 at half. And then I think Ohio State's too good not to eventually score so they may backdoor it. You know, they make. Well, they wouldn't backdoor it. They'll be leading. They'll. Ohio State I think will probably in the end feel like the better team somewhere in the fourth. But I think Notre Dame will hang around a while.
J. Mac
Let's not forget, if not for a Drew Aller awful decision and bad interception. We don't even know if Notre Dame wins that game.
Matt Mosley
You know what Notre Dame does? Makes quarterbacks make bad decisions. It's funny, it's coincidental every time they play a team, quarterbacks make bad decisions.
J. Mac
Interesting.
Matt Mosley
Look at that.
J. Mac
We watch that game together. I don't know, is it.
Matt Mosley
How big is that number? You know what? Notre Dame's offense isn't real splashy. So maybe it won't get a great rating.
J. Mac
But not even with Josh Allen under center.
Matt Mosley
I said there's things he does that look a little like Josh Allen. Like run through the middle being white and running.
J. Mac
He's more Daniel Jones than Josh Allen.
Matt Mosley
Okay, that hurts. J. Mac with the news. Well, that's the news.
J. Mac
And thanks for stopping by the Herd lie news.
Matt Mosley
All right, we're going to go to Dallas, check in on the Cowboys next.
Colin Cowherd

Well, he's been hosting the Doomsday podcast for years and years. Really really good Cowboys podcast. He's been A reporter since 2003 cover in Dallas and the NFL. He's Matt Mosley, he's my friend and he's joining us here at the end of the show today for 10 minutes. And this is important stuff. So first of all, are you surprised by it? You're usually have kind of your finger on the pulse when you heard the news. That it shock you?
Unknown Speaker
No, no. Either way would not have shocked me but I thought Jerry was trying to get Mike to sort of break up with him. This is where this thing was headed the whole way. And so you know the players and Dak, they were all sort of lobbying for Mike. But in the end I'm not real surprised because I looked up there at those stands and boy that's the one thing that'll get Jerry's attention. Even on Thanksgiving people were not coming to the games. It's almost never happens with the Cowboys. And so I think he wanted to make a move but he tried to like salvage something with McCarthy and offer him some real short term deal. And I think McCarthy said I've had enough. I think McCarthy was incredibly uncomfortable going into the season with on the last year of his contract and for his staff and he stated that and you know, and then all the injuries happened and everything like that. But I think both sides are fine parting ways at this point.
Matt Mosley
So listen, they're not going to get Aaron Glenn or Ben Johnson because they can't interview them because Jerry put this thing off. They can't interview him until the Lions season is over. And that could be, you know, February, early February. So you may not get the best two coordinators. Vrabel's off the market. You don't have McCarthy. Where do they go? Where do you think they lean?
Unknown Speaker
Well, always look for the retread always. And Jerry has to feel comfortable here. And I'm telling you, he loves, he loves Jon Gruden, I mean, Pete Carroll. He mentioned to me I might go after somebody that has Super Bowls. He loved that about McCarthy, that he had the one Super Bowl. So look around for coaches that have Super Bowls. Also look at Cliff Kingsbury, who also just won a playoff game. Jerry loves him. They have a relationship. But you always have to look at Jerry. Right now is on the phone with people outside the organization. That's what people don't think. They're like, who's he listening to? There's no telling who he's calling right now. It could be Barry Switzer. He loves taking advice from like his old buddies and people outside the organization. So he's calling around, he's looking. But he does have a list. And he always has told me that I've got the list, the list will be ready and we'll see where he goes. But any of those young assistants you, you talked about, none of those make sense. None of those, none of those feel like Jerry. He's not comfortable. Except one, and that is Kellen Moore because of the familiarity with him being with the Cowboys and calling plays, already having a relationship with Dak. That's the only one of these sort of youngish coordinators who has any sort of shot at this job. And I don't know if he'd want it.
Matt Mosley
Yeah, the. Do you think Mike McCarthy. I think Mike McCarthy fits in Chicago, you know, his personality. Do you think he'd like to go back and tangle with Green Bay? Where do you think Mike goes?
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, I think Chicago would be perfect for him. I think New Orleans is the other one because Mickey Loomis, the gm, long time relationship.
Matt Mosley
He.
Unknown Speaker
He called plays there. He, you know, he. I think he loves that organization, but I think the thought of having a young quarterback and turning him in the right direction, he's got all sorts of ability. They obviously messed it up completely this year. And I think he would, I think he would love the opportunity to do that. So I think Chicago's a good one. I think the Saints are a really good one. And you know, I, it's amazing that he has this opportunity though. You go 7 and 10, get bounced out of Dallas and suddenly he's. He's like some sort of hot name. I mean, who would have ever thought. And he ends up with leverage over Jerry. Only Jerry lets that happen. To have a coach go seven and 10 and end up in a bad bargaining. You know, Jerry gets All the credit in the world for being these like this great negotiator. But sometimes there's no evidence of it and in this case there is zero evidence of him being a good negotiator.
Matt Mosley
Listen, Jaden Daniels on a rookie contract looks spectacular. Philadelphia has got a much better roster. I don't. I predicted this would be a non playoff team that would slowly regress. I didn't know Dak would get hurt. I think they're two drafts away with Dax contract. You're not going to do it in free agency. You tell me how good is this roster?
Unknown Speaker
Well, it's just they don't want to do anything in free agency and that's the problem. They don't see. They see their only answer is hitting on draft picks and well that's just, you know, they, they've done pretty well drafting but their reluctance to do anything in free agency hurts them. Now they always believe and this is what you'll hear all, all off season we believe in Dak. They paid him this huge money. They think he's going to come back. They think he's going to be great. He does have a star receiver. They've got to get running back, right? I mean it was a joke that they didn't. They waited till like eight or nine games in the season to pick a feature back and then they actually started running with Dowdle. So they, you know, that's where the league is going this year. And so I think they. But McCarthy's gone. That will help in one respect because he's never loved committing to the run. So you have to find somebody. And plus Colin, they could lean on that defense. You know, Parsons, they got to figure out what to do with Lawrence. But those defensive linemen, if they could resign anybody actually came on this season quietly the, the D line and then Micah came back. They put together some pretty good games.
Matt Mosley
You know, finally, you know Jerry's patterns and trends. Does he want to do this quickly? I mean the Patriots took about five minutes to hire Vrabel. I mean the ink was barely dry on the press release with Gerard mail. Jerry going to do this quickly. You're going to be patient.
Unknown Speaker
No, he didn't want to do it quickly because he likes to sort of own, you know, these next week or so of the playoffs. He loves people talking about the Cowboys. I'd be really surprised if this thing happened in the next three or four days. This thing will play out all, you know, he'll think about all these candidates. He's talking to people, getting input Right now, but it'll have to be someone with head coaching experience or Kellen Moore. I mean, that's really where it's going to go. And the reason I bring up Gruden is because I think Jerry loves the idea of kind of putting it to Roger Goodell. You know, you remember with Gruden basically gets bounced out of the league for those emails and everything that came up. I think Jerry would love being the one to bring him back. And so don't discount Jerry's sort of pettiness in that area.
Matt Mosley
Wow, that is something else. Matt Mosley, Doomsday Pocket, my friend. It's great to see you. Usually your future so bright, you wear shades, but this time we get to see the whole face. And it's a quite stunning to look at you in your inner glory. And you're kicking butt. And I love seeing you, buddy. Oh, yeah. There you go. Oh, I like that. Now that's the studious academic scholastic Matt Mosley. I like that, too.
Unknown Speaker
Yes, exactly.
Matt Mosley
All right, buddy. Good seeing you.
Unknown Speaker
Good to see you.
Matt Mosley
Matt Mosley does a great job. Funny guy. If you ever look at a Cowboy press conference, he's always the guy with the dark shades. Known him for years. Well, you heard it there. Matt knows it. Matt, you know he told you he's not going to do one of these. You know, he's going to want retreads. John Gruden's fascinating. He's now doing some stuff with barstools. So he's kind of resurrecting his career. Well, I mean, it's something. He's out there, you know, I mean, it's.
J. Mac
You're as likely to get hired as a head coach of the Cowboys as Jon Gruden.
Matt Mosley
It's pretty cynical.
J. Mac
This is just some of these names I'm seeing floated.
Matt Mosley
What are you seeing floated? Throw it to me.
J. Mac
Jason Whitten. Jerry Jones. Loves him. Smart guy, longtime Cowboy.
Matt Mosley
He is smart.
J. Mac
Okay, go for it.
Colin Cowherd
I got.
J. Mac
Listen, go back.
Matt Mosley
What's another one? Give me another one.
J. Mac
Well, you just put Lincoln Riley out there in the ether.
Matt Mosley
I didn't put it out there. I just said he doesn't.
J. Mac
Losing their minds over, are they? Yeah, yeah.
Matt Mosley
What are they saying?
J. Mac
I mean, listen, Cowboys fans in general are a mess, I think.
Matt Mosley
Cowboy fans, I'll. I'll defend them. Remember this year there was a poll during the summer and they asked Cowboy fans, can you win a Super bowl in the next five years? And it was like 80% of the fans, like, no, they're not.
J. Mac
Delusional only 80%.
Matt Mosley
Well, I mean, listen, fans are fans. I mean, but I think Cowboy fans are tired of Jerry.
J. Mac
I mean, honestly, I think the jets job is bad with Aaron Rodgers. I would probably say it's at least as good as the Cowboys.
Matt Mosley
No, the jets roster, well, is significantly better than the Cowboys, I think.
J. Mac
Remember what I asked you during the break about would you trade for this certain guy on the Jets? Don't say his name yet. There's a little more than smoke around that right now.
Matt Mosley
I'm telling you, jets are going to.
J. Mac
Blow up their roster with like a good play.
Matt Mosley
Come on, we got interesting openings. Cowboys, Bears, Jets. It's usually the Jags every 15 minutes.
J. Mac
Jags are out there too.
Matt Mosley
Oh yeah.
Colin Cowherd

Summary of "The Herd with Colin Cowherd"
Episode: Hour 3 - Who Should the Cowboys Go After?
Release Date: January 13, 2025
In this episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, hosted by iHeartPodcasts and The Volume, Colin delves into the pressing question facing the Dallas Cowboys: Who should the Cowboys go after for their next head coach? The discussion is rich with expert analysis, insights from guest Dion Dawkins of the Buffalo Bills, and contributions from Matt Mosley of the Doomsday Podcast. The episode navigates the complexities of coaching changes in the NFL, team dynamics, and strategic decisions impacting the Cowboys' future.
The episode kicks off with Matt Mosley addressing the abrupt end to negotiations between Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys. "Mike McCarthy changed agents to a guy named Don Yee... My take is McCarthy wanted five years or a long guaranteed deal," Mosley explains (07:04). The inability to secure a satisfactory contract led to both parties parting ways, leaving the Cowboys in search of a new head coach.
Mosley explores various candidates who could fill the head coach vacancy:
Mike Tomlin: "I think you have to talk to Mike Tomlin. That would be somebody I'm interested in," Mosley suggests (24:10). Tomlin's proven track record with the Pittsburgh Steelers makes him a strong contender.
Jon Gruden and John Gruden: Mosley and co-host J. Mac discuss the possibility of bringing back Jon Gruden, noting his history with the Cowboys and potential fit (55:15).
Liam Cohen: Another name floated is Liam Cohen, though skepticism remains about his fit and willingness to take on the role (54:44).
Cliff Kingsbury: Kingsbury is mentioned as a potential candidate due to his recent success and relationship with Jerry Jones (50:40).
The conversation highlights the scarcity of top-tier coaching talent available at the moment:
Limited Availability: "The two best coordinator candidates out there are both in Detroit," Mosley notes, emphasizing the difficulty in securing top coaches until the Lions' season concludes (15:05).
Jerry Jones' Dilemma: Jerry Jones is portrayed as struggling to make timely decisions, which has hindered the Cowboys from interviewing prime candidates (15:25). This delay has resulted in missing the window to engage with sought-after coaches like Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson (15:01).
Dion Dawkins provides an insider's perspective on the Buffalo Bills' performance in the playoffs. He expresses high confidence in the team's current form: "This is the best Buffalo Bills football team I have ever been a part of in my eight seasons that I've been here," Dawkins asserts (29:21). The combination of a positive team morale, effective coaching, and standout performances from key players like Josh Allen contribute to this optimism.
Dawkins discusses the improvement in the Bills' offensive line and running game, highlighting the impact of players like James Cook: "Going forward is always easier than going backwards for an offensive lineman," he explains (27:55). The enhancement of the run game has provided greater stability and versatility in the offense.
The role of offensive coordinator Joe Brady is praised for his collaborative approach and accountability: "He takes ownership when it's his time to take ownership. And because he does, we respect it," Dawkins remarks (30:57). Brady's ability to foster a positive environment and his strategic decisions have been pivotal in the Bills' success.
The episode touches on the Commanders' recent game, where strategic missteps like a fumble by Baker Mayfield had significant consequences: "Baker was fine. He had a good game," Mosley comments on the overall performance despite the setback (37:07).
Discussions extend to other teams, including the Chargers, Steelers, and their coaching strategies. The analysis covers defensive line performances, quarterback management, and offensive strategies, with a focus on how these factors influence playoff prospects.
A segment is dedicated to college football, particularly the Ohio State vs Notre Dame national championship game. Key plays, player performances, and strategic decisions are analyzed, with Mosley predicting a low-scoring, tightly contested match: "I think the game is going to be very low scoring," he forecasts (40:44).
Matt Mosley, host of the Doomsday Podcast, shares his expert opinions on the Cowboys' coaching search:
Frustration with Jerry Jones: Mosley critiques Jerry Jones for poor negotiation tactics and delayed decision-making: "Jerry gets All the credit in the world for being these like this great negotiator. But sometimes there's no evidence of it," he states (50:17).
Evaluating Candidates: Emphasizing the importance of experience and fit, Mosley reiterates the suitability of Mike Tomlin and suggests that Chicago could be an ideal destination for McCarthy (50:32).
Future Projections: Mosley speculates on the long-term implications for the Cowboys if they fail to secure a top-tier coaching candidate, warning of potential stagnation and continued struggles (51:59).
Colin Cowherd wraps up the episode by reiterating the critical nature of the coaching search for the Dallas Cowboys and the broader implications for the NFL's coaching landscape.
