Mac Jones who? Mac Jones 2A13308004. You had to hit Mike Mac Jones up on the low because again, M. Jones is about to blow. Welcome back to the Richard Sherman podcast. And as you can see, I'm still on the road, but I had to react to that Niners win last night in Levi's south. Bang, bang. Mac 10 got it done again.
Matt Jones
Three.
Richard Sherman
And oh, now in his starts, what more can you say? I can say a ton. No George Kittle. No Brock Purdy. No Brandon Aiyuk. I mean, the list goes on. Nicholas John Bosa, injured for the season. What do we do? We get it done. I sit in the meetings. I sat in the meetings with, with the team and the defense the night before because we just happened to stay at the same hotel, which was really cool. And it was an incredible message Kyle gave to the team about resilience, accountability, and just finishing, having energy, winning energy and winning. Focus to the last play. They had every intention of winning this game. This wasn't a game where they felt like, oh, man, you know, oh, the Rams are up here and we don't have a chance and we, we can't get this done. He thought we had enough guys to get it done. He said, we have enough to get this done. He knew the task and the team knew the task. The young defense knew the task and they were up to the task. Fred Warner, another great game by him. Dee Winters, you know, the guys played great. I think in the secondary. Renardo Green played a really, really solid game. Upton Stout went out with the injury, but I thought he was good. D' Amador made a huge PBU late in the game against Puka Nakua. That really, really could have, could have been disastrous. That could have been a game ender right there. There were so many plays where the momentum could have shifted and, and, and put the San Francisco 49ers away, but they would not stop fighting. And I remember there was a narrative around these young draft picks, like, oh, man, they're, they're not doing great enough in, in, in training camp. They're too high. You know, I'm not seeing the things I need to see in a preseason game. Well, you now, you are seeing them right now before your eyes. In real life, this is multiple weeks where a rookie, a rookie player impacted the winning in a huge way. It was Upton Stout with a PBU with a late PBU against the Arizona Cardinals. And this week it's Alfred Collins with a game saving force fumble at the goal line. I mean, Robert Sala is from the Pete Carroll tree. From the tree. And they say, hey, if you give us an inch, we will protect it. So if you, no matter what, if there's space between the End zone and the ball. We must protect it. And that's exactly what he did. He protected the end zone, took the ball away. I was talking to Fred Warner and Fred thought the crowd was cheering because. Because they scored, because Kyron Williams had scored, not because of a fumble, but he should have known it was because of a fumble, because San Francisco 49ers fans were the loudest in the building. They were loud the entire game, and it was incredible to see. But let's turn around to the offensive side of the ball because Mac Jones. Who? Mack Jones. Who? Mac Jones. 2813-308-8004. You had to hit Mike Mac Jones up on the low because again, Mac Jones is about to blow. He got a little banged up in the game. He continued to fight, continued to show toughness, incredible talent, poise, football iq. I mean, he played an incredible game. And I think Kyle Shanahan called a masterful game. You could see he was deep in his bag in this game. You saw double reverse passes. You saw a fake double screen seam pass. You saw he put out all the stops. I had never seen Kyle Shanahan goal line and then expand, expand and throw a pass. That was New England Patriots with Tom Brady and Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez when they used to come goal line, get the defense and the personnel they wanted them in, and then expand and go attack the mismatch. That was masterful. I hope we see more of that. And then we got to talk about KB and these receivers. We, of course, got to talk about Christian McCaffrey and the incredible plays he made, but that's expected. He had a lot of touches. He had 100 touches coming into this game, and he's done a lot with him. This team would not be in a position they are without Christian McCaffrey and everything he is. But he's a former offensive player of the year, and that's the expectation for him. He looks healthy, he looks good. They're going to have to give Brian Robinson a few more carries just to give Christian McCarry, Christian McCaffrey a little bit of rest. Seems he is human being. He needs a. You know, he can't carry that the entire season, but he's done a phenomenal job. But there was a lot of conversation and I was critical of KB and his drop. He was critical. Kyle Shanahan was critical of him in the. In the meeting, saying, hey, you can't have it. You can't have it. We need better. And I know you're better than that. I know who you are. I know you won't do it again. I know you won't make that mistake again. And he had the game of his life, 10 catches for 142 yards and made play after play after play when they needed to have it. Sure, you had the third down drop on third and five, and he's going to be hard on himself about that play. But they're not in this game and winning this game without Kendrick Bourne playing the way he did. And I think he played like the best receiver on the field. He was the most productive receiver on the field for either team in this game. And I think he deserves praise the same way we. We, you know, push criticism on players and say, man, you. You freaking suck and you're the worst and do all this. You got to give them praise, man. The man looked at himself in the mirror, said, hey, you got to be better on a short week, came back and rectified it. Rectified it in a big way. And you love to freaking see it now. Four and one, top of the NFC west, three and oh, in the division. Half the division games are already played and done, and you've won them without a lot of your star players, without George Kittle. When he comes back, it's going to be. It's going to take it to another level. You got to think this Rams team just took the super bowl champs to the wire. It took a block field goal for them to win that game, for the Eagles to beat the Rams, they. They just beat a 4, 0 Indianapolis team. Like, this is a really good Texans defense. They played against and won that game. They found ways to win, and they're really talented. They got two of the best receivers in the National Football League. So this isn't just a. Oh, man, like a divisional win and you'd be happy about it. This is a coach of the year signature performance for Kyle Shanahan, and you got to treat it that way.

Hello, puzzlers. Let's start with a quick puzzle. The answer is Ken Jennings appearance on the puzzler with A.J. jacobs. The question is, what is the most entertaining listening experience in podcast land? Jeopardy. Truthers who say that you were given all the answers believe in.
Richard Sherman
I guess they would be conspiracy theorists.
AJ Jacobs
That's right. Are there Jeopardy. Truthers? Are there people who say that it. It was rigged?
Richard Sherman
Yeah. Ever since I was first on, people are like, they gave you the answers. Right. And then there's the other ones which are like they gave you the answers and you still blew it.

We're just here to try to give you an NFL perspective a little bit different. Did you see the Colts pretzel? That was my other big takeaway from that game.
Richard Sherman
What was that?
Matt Jones

Ty
Yes.

Not that Shane Steichen of the Indianapolis Colts doesn't deserve consideration. No question about it. Mike McDonald in Seattle, no question about it, coaching his butt off. But for Kyle Shanahan to come in here with the receivers he started with, he's, he, he. I think they said this is the most yards for players not on the roster on the initial 53 man roster in the history of the national football league or 20 years or something. It's been a long time since a team has relied so heavily on guys that they did not have on the initial 53 man roster. And Kyle Shanahan does not make excuses for anything. He does not say, hey man, we're too injured and man, that's, that's why we shouldn't be winning. He just finds a way to win. And I know there's been some criticism of him and these injuries. I don't know what the answer is. I really don't. I wish I could tell you, hey, I know the answer. They should do A, B and C. And I know everybody has their opinion, but it's not anywhere near as simple as, hey, let's replace the training staff. I'm not sure that's the answer because they've done that. Let's replace the strength and conditioning staff. Not sure that's the answer because they've done that. Let's change the grass, let's change the field, let's bring some more people in to study this. They've done that. I promise you. There's new people, they have new positions, they have a new medical staff, they have a new person in charge of studying the injuries and the rehabs and everything. It's just the most unfortunate luck in the history of the National Football League. But again, it gets to a point that you, you see how depleted this team is, but you get to understand and appreciate Kyle Shanahan's brilliance and his play calling, his coaching, because I think sometimes you lose sight of that and you don't, you don't appreciate what he's been able to do over these nine years in San Francisco. But games like this, where it looks like there's no chance this team, there's no way in hell this team wins this game and they do. Then you get a respect and appreciation for him. Robert Sala, this young draft class, they have to depend so heavily on young guys, but they're well coached and they're getting it done week in and week out. They got a tough schedule coming up. They got the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's weird because it seems like one week the Seattle Seahawks have an opponent that The San Francisco 49ers are going to play and then vice versa. Obviously they're in the same division, so they're going to see similar opponents, but it's happening really close in this schedule. It's really, in my, in my opinion, unique, but man, so excited for this team. When they get healthy, they're going to be a Super bowl contender. If you wondering, Faithful, whether they're going to be in my top five, they are. They will be in my top five next week. I'm not sure exactly the number they're going to be, but when you can come in with a backup quarterback, backup receivers who are, who are third and sometimes fourth string backup tight ends, backups on the defensive side, missing your star former defensive player of the year and come out and win a tough divisional game against a contender, a true contender with a veteran quarterback. And Matthew Stafford, who had one of the most absurd throws going opposite, throwing across to two, two at. Well, that I've seen in a very long time, just showed silly arm talent and silly ridiculous talent from him. Just. I mean, I know we always talk about these young guys, Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen and what they've done, but Matthew Stafford has been doing it for a long time and is still doing it at a high level. And we, we just got to acknowledge that. We got to acknowledge that Matthew Stafford is still doing it big. But congrats to Mac Jones, congrats to the San Francisco 49ers. That's a huge game, a huge win. Faithful, you should feel really good about this team. These young, these young D linemen, these young players on defense will only get better, they'll only get healthier. I think there's a chance John lynch makes a move for another veteran pass rusher. I'm not sure it'll be as big of a splash as, as people are projecting or people are hoping for because they don't want to get more salary cap issues. I mean, they have enough of them right now with the amount of dead money that they have from the players they've had to let go. But they'll get healthier, they'll get better. And of course Brock Purdy is still the number one quarterback. He's still number. Mac Jones understands that. Kyle Shanahan obviously understands that. John lynch understands that. And the outside world needs to understand that. There's going to be no QB controversy. There's going to be. I don't think there's a chance that Brock Purdy's healthy and he's not the number one quarterback. I think that'd be absurd. But do I think that this gives The San Francisco 49ers peace of mind to let Brock Purdy heal in totality and not rush him back like they did, like they had to do for the Jacksonville Jaguars game? No question about it. I think he sits for at least three or four more weeks just because of how irritated he got after that, that game. You don't want to have those issues lingering through the playoffs or through, through late in the season and have these conversations. Obviously they feel better and better about Mac Jones as, as he plays. He's making himself a ton of money. But I don't think there's any kind of QB controversy. I think there's going to be QB controversies other places when he becomes a free agent because he looks like a first round pick. There were speculation that Kyle Shanahan preferred Mac Jones in the draft and he was going to draft him. And I thought a lot of people didn't like that move. They didn't like that suggestion, especially at three and he didn't pick him. To his credit, he picked Trey Lance. It didn't work out. Trey Lance looks pretty good out there in LA backing up Justin Herbert. But now you're getting a chance to see what Mac Jones would look like in a Kyle Shanahan system. And he looks like a great quarterback. He looks like a great quarterback. He looks like he can get the job done for a long time to come. And I expect him to find a job next year and be another one of those career revitalizations in the same breath as Sam Darnold and, and, and Indiana Jones out there in Indianapolis and who I'm missing because there's been the Baker Mayfield in Tampa. It's been a lot of guys that, that have kind of been, been given up on and been called bus and then turned around and got great coaching, whether it's Kevin O', Connell, Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan and then really, really had a career resurgence and that's been cool to see.

But in other news, we're hearing a lot of conversations about Shador Sanders and how a number three quarterback shouldn't be talking to the media and how he should shut up and he's becoming a distraction. And all this again. I think Shador Sanders is a, is an NFL quarterback. I think he could be a starter on a number of teams. Do I think he should be getting interviewed as a, as a number three quarterback? I don't. But I think as a professional, if you're in a locker room and somebody comes up to you and asks a question, it's rude for you to just walk away. It's rude for you to say, no comment, I got nothing to say. Because that'd be news, you know, that they spin that story and manipulate that to say, hey, he's a bad guy. This is why he can't be a starting quarterback, because he doesn't know how to handle the media. I think he's handled himself pretty well. I being confident is one thing and I think him saying, hey, I think I'm better than a lot of guys out there. You see in a quarterback play, I'm better than a lot of them. I think that's unnecessary because of how it's going to be perceived and how it's going to be received. Again, I think the narrative about him not going to Baltimore was crazy and I've spoken my piece on that. But then you look up and you see a situation where Lamar Jackson has a hamstring injury and and now they have to go to their backup. And that's a situation where if you, if you just don't say anything and Baltimore wants him and Baltimore picks him up, then you're in a situation where, again, you're learning from a veteran quarterback, a Super Bowl, I mean, MVP of the league multiple times, and this situation comes up, you're surrounded by a really, really good team, a good organization, a good head coach who plays situational football as good as anybody, a great running back behind you. So again, this is why you don't turn down any opportunities. If a team, in the future, if a team wants to draft you kids, just say yes. Just say yes. I know teams don't, you don't want to go to bad teams that are untalented teams, but when you don't have a choice in his third round or later, just say yes. Just say yes. Because you never know what can happen in this National Football League. And every opportunity is a good opportunity. It's an opportunity. And you never know what's going to happen. Any given Sunday, anything can happen. This game never ceases to amaze me. So in that situation, I think, you know, I think he's, he's doing the best he can. He. I don't think he needed to do the whole mime silence thing because Rex said he should just shut up and do all that. Like, I think that's a little bit extra. But I'm not really mad at him. I, I'm not, you know, I think it's a, a non story. He's doing the best he can in the situation. He's probably frustrated. He thinks he should be playing and he wants to play and, and sometimes things are, aren't in your control. But again, can he handle the situation a little better? I'm sure he could. I'm sure he's going to continue to learn from this and get better and improve with each and every day, which is, which is all he can do. Which is all anybody can do. As always, I appreciate you guys joining us. You could be anywhere in the world, but you're here with us, even when we're on the road and we're not at home in our studio. Richard Sherman Podcast - 49ers-Rams REACTION: Mac Jones SHINES in Brock Purdy role + Shanahan brilliant | Richard Sherman NFL
October 4, 2025
In this episode, Richard Sherman delivers a passionate, insightful breakdown of the San Francisco 49ers’ gritty, injury-riddled victory over the Los Angeles Rams, focusing on quarterback Mac Jones's standout performance substituting for Brock Purdy and lauding head coach Kyle Shanahan’s masterful coaching and play-calling. Sherman provides unique insider details, notable moments from both sides of the ball, and addresses broader quarterback narratives and controversies around the league.
The 49ers won despite the absence of key players: George Kittle, Brock Purdy, Brandon Aiyuk, and star defender Nick Bosa.
Sherman recounts the atmosphere from being at the team hotel and inside meetings, revealing a powerful pregame speech by Shanahan focused on "resilience, accountability, and finishing" [03:00].
"He said, 'We have enough to get this done.' He knew the task and the team knew the task... They were up to the task."
— Richard Sherman [03:22]
Young defenders — Fred Warner, Dee Winters, Renardo Green, D’Amador Lenior, and rookie Alfred Collins — stepped up.
Dramatic moment: Alfred Collins had a game-saving forced fumble at the goal line, stopping Kyren Williams and swinging momentum.
D’Amador Lenior's late-game pass breakup on Puka Nacua was pivotal.
"Alfred Collins with a game-saving force fumble at the goal line... If you give us an inch, we will protect it."
— Richard Sherman [05:38]
With Purdy out, Mac Jones delivers a poised, intelligent, and tough performance, guiding the offense under adverse circumstances:
"Mac Jones who? Mac Jones got it done again... He continued to fight, continued to show toughness, incredible talent, poise, football IQ."
— Richard Sherman [06:10]
Kyle Shanahan’s play-calling is described as “masterful,” employing creative double reverses, fake screens, and goal-line personnel mismatches reminiscent of Patriots-era strategy [07:00].
"You saw double reverse passes. You saw a fake double screen seam pass. He put out all the stops. That was masterful."
— Richard Sherman [07:18]
McCaffrey is praised for continued elite production and durability but Sherman cautions against overuse, recommending more carries for Brian Robinson [08:00].
Kendrick Bourne (KB) bounces back from previous criticism and a drop, responding with a "game of his life": 10 receptions for 142 yards.
"I know who you are. I know you won’t do it again... He had the game of his life, 10 catches for 142 yards." — Richard Sherman (on KB and Shanahan’s confidence) [08:26]
Not just a divisional victory but a signature, potentially “Coach of the Year” moment for Shanahan given the circumstances.
The Rams are described as a legitimate contender; the win's value is underscored by their strong performances against other top teams [09:10].
"This is a coach of the year, signature performance for Kyle Shanahan, and you’ve got to treat it that way."
— Richard Sherman [09:39]
Sherman addresses criticisms of the 49ers’ recurring injury issues, noting the team has revamped medical and conditioning staff and facilities, chalking it up to "the most unfortunate luck in the history of the National Football League."
He stresses the brilliance of Shanahan in winning with players not even on the week-one roster [13:52].
"Kyle Shanahan does not make excuses for anything... He just finds a way to win." — Richard Sherman [13:52]
Clear affirmation: No quarterback controversy in San Francisco; Purdy remains the starter, but Jones gives the 49ers valuable peace of mind and roster flexibility.
Sherman anticipates Jones garnering starter attention elsewhere after his performance, contrasting his journey with other recent QB revivals like Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold.
"There’s going to be no QB controversy... Do I think that this gives the San Francisco 49ers peace of mind to let Brock Purdy heal in totality?... No question about it."
— Richard Sherman [17:32]
Acknowledges Stafford’s continued high-level play and skill, referencing a standout "absurd" throw.
"Matthew Stafford has been doing it for a long time and is still doing it at a high level. We just gotta acknowledge that."
— Richard Sherman [16:50]
Sherman reacts to debate over Shador Sanders' media presence as a third-string QB, cautiously supporting Sanders’ professionalism while advising humility, patience, and accepting opportunities when they arise.
"Every opportunity is a good opportunity. You never know what’s going to happen. Any given Sunday, anything can happen."
— Richard Sherman [24:44]
On 49ers’ win despite adversity:
"When you can come in with a backup quarterback, backup receivers who are third and sometimes fourth string, backup tight ends, backups on the defensive side, missing your star former Defensive Player of the Year, and come out and win a tough divisional game... that's huge."
— Richard Sherman [15:40]
On Kendrick Bourne’s redemption:
"He looked at himself in the mirror, said, 'You gotta be better.' On a short week, came back and rectified it in a big way. You love to freaking see it."
— Richard Sherman [08:46]
On Mac Jones in Kyle Shanahan’s system:
"Now you're getting a chance to see what Mac Jones would look like in a Kyle Shanahan system, and he looks like a great quarterback."
— Richard Sherman [18:55]
Coach of the Year endorsement:
“This is a coach of the year, signature performance for Kyle Shanahan, and you gotta treat it that way.”
— Richard Sherman [09:39]
Sherman is candid, energetic, and unabashedly supportive of players and coaches, balancing constructive criticism with big-picture perspective. He sprinkles playful humor (“Mac Jones who?”) with locker-room insight and clear admiration for grit, coaching ingenuity, and competitive excellence.
