Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast, and it's Week seven. Mitchell Chaos in the NFL. Who's a contender? Who's a pretender? You really don't know. But what I do know is New York. The Giants might have found him one.
Mitchell
I think the Giants did find them one in Jackson. Dart, man. Holy cow, what a game for the New York Giants. Unfortunately for them. Talk about Blunders Richard, they give up 33 points in the fourth quarter and I know you as a defensive back. Let's, before we get to this game, let's talk about a specific play because it comes down to the wire. The Giants are trailing and they throw a deep ball up on the right side. Riley Moss gets flagged at the one yard line with PI on, on a back shoulder fade. I guess if you want to call it that, a ball that was thrown underneath the receiver and the refs bail them out. I know you did not like that call. And ultimately, I think karma, you know, awarded the Broncos with a big time victory. Richard, your thoughts on that play and your thoughts on this game?
Richard Sherman
Yeah, it was an incredible game. I, I mean early on you thought, hey, the Giants, it looks like their day, you know, it couldn't go better for them. Jackson dart had some, some real, real great passes, got, got some things, didn't use his legs a ton, got a little banged up. Theo Johnson catch, catches a tip pass from Wandell Robinson and you think, oh my God, this is the Giants day. Then Denver wakes up in the fourth quarter, 33 points in the fourth, ROAR all the way back and win this game. But the play you're talking about was the penultimate drive of the game. And Riley Moss, I don't, you know, I hate to be cliche, but I don't think he could have played that any better. You're playing through the receiver. Look, look back for the ball. Swipe through the receiver and it's incomplete. It looks like a no play. Like, hey, I've seen, I've seen worse things happen and then not be called, but these under thrown PIs are, are the death of me. Like they're going to be the death of this game because it's, it, it's detrimental to the game because you only, you're rewarding the offense for bad play. You're rewarding offense. It's hard enough play to make. I, I want to, I, I challenge anybody to go outside and have somebody run a route and then have somebody under throw it. And I want to see you either stop them from catching it or defend it without, without PI. And then you'll finally understand how hard it is to play defensive back in this league and for Riley Moss to look back through in that critical situation and for them to throw the flag. I, oh, I don't think it's good for the game, man. I don't think it's good for the game. But you know what? Football has a way of evening itself out. And figuring it out. And the Broncos came back. Bo Nicks played a really good game in the second half, especially the fourth quarter, I would say. Yep, he threw two TDS. He threw the ball 50 times. 279, two touchdowns. They, they started to hand the ball to J.K. dobbins a little bit more. He ended up with 14 carries for 81 yards. And the defense showed up. They got a critical interception in that fourth quarter. Big time interception deep in Giants territory, which, which ended up being incredibly helpful to, to their comeback effort. They had four sacks in the game, obviously coming in with the lead sack getter, Nick Bonito, one of the best corners in the National Football League, if not the best corner. Reigning defensive player of the year, Patrick Certain. And even with all that they, they had, it had to come down to the wire, but they were ever able to make enough plays down the stretch to win this game. That's, that's, that's championship grit. That's a playoff team. That's good coaching, that's good execution and, and that's a great learning for this team. You know, I know this defense is probably going to be kicking themselves looking at missed opportunities, giving up 32 points in a game, but you'll take learning lessons in a win, no question about it.
Mitchell
There's no doubt about it. And especially with the Kansas, Kansas City Chiefs looking like their old self at 4 and 3. Now, these buccaneers need, or, I'm sorry, these Broncos need to keep up with them 5 and 2. Now this is a huge win and this was a win they should have had looking at the schedule. But I tell you what, Richard, the New York Giants, there's something brewing in New York right now. I mean, albeit with a loss, what they have with Jackson Dart and, and Cam Scatterboo, I mean, as a New York Giant fan, you got to be looking at this team and saying, hey, I don't know if we're going to make the playoffs anyways, so maybe it's not the worst thing that we take a loss today. Maybe it helps us in the long run. But you got to look at this team and say, wow, okay, maybe they are onto something.
Richard Sherman
Yeah, you definitely do. And, and, and in the grand scheme of things, this was a lost season for the Giants anyway. You're not expected to win the world. You're not expected. But I think one thing is, is it is true, is is Day bowl shouldn't be going anywhere this year. I think they continued, they're going to continue to draft, they're going to have A high draft pick. Unfortunately, I don't think they have the team to necessarily compete, but to compete with a playoff team from last year, a team that, that is well coached, a team that's expected to be contenders this year, not only for the AFC west, but for potentially the super bowl, especially with that defense, for them to come out and play the way they did to, to hang in there, to, to really dominate for a majority of this game. Jackson Dart seems to be the answer in New York. Obviously he struggled a little bit late when he got banged up, but he still had three touchdown passes. He ran one in. That's four touchdowns in the game. Scatter Boo. Sixteen carries for 60 yards. Tyrone Tracy came back, made an impact, had a 31 yard touchdown in this game and the defense had a couple of sacks, but Brian Burns got banged up. Obviously there's some, some, some issues late in the game, but again, this is without Malik Neighbors. This is without Slayton. This is without your go to guy. So you have to take, take, take some, take some solace and, and knowing that you did this with Daniel Bellinger, Theo Johnson, Wandell Robinson and no, no, you know, disrespect to those guys, but those aren't your guys. Those aren't your, your premier players. You expect Malik Neighbors to come back and be a big time guy. I expect them to draft likely an offensive lineman in this draft high up, but I expect him to draft more playmakers and then defensively you would expect more pressure, but you give, give Denver Broncos a lot of credit. They, they played well. The Giants next game they got the Eagles again, who they just beat on Thursday night. We had him, the Giant. The Eagles coming off a really good win where their offense looked really special. They're wide receivers. Both of them had over 100 yards in the game. Jalen Hurts threw for over 300 in the game and he looked really proficient, especially late in that game. So I'm looking forward to that. Can they, can they match the energy they had against them a couple weeks ago? We'll see. The Broncos have the Cowboys who look like an entirely different team. They do than they have in the past. Against the Washington Commanders. They, they played well defensively, had a pick six. Duron Bland is back in the lineup, had a pick six. They talked about playing more man coverage and they were able to do it. Obviously the Washington Commanders were without their top three pass catchers, but still they, and, and obviously Jaden Daniels got banged up in this game, but Dak Prescott looks really, really good.
Mitchell
Mitchell, no question about it you want to know who else looks really, really, really good is the Indianapolis Colts. I mean, this team, to me, if you wanted somebody to have to go on the road and prove it, prove that they're worth this championship contender category, it was the Annapolis Colts and now they're 6 and 1. They go on the road to the LA Chargers and they take care of business. I mean, they dominated this game. Richard, your boy Indiana Jones, Daniel Jones putting on another clinic and then his running mate, Mr. Taylor, I mean Jonathan Taylor with three touchdowns. Holy cow. He's got to be firmly in that MVP combo. I would assume that's so tough to break as a running back. But Richard, the Indianapolis Colts win by 14 points, 38 to 24 against the LA Chargers, who are trying to keep up in this division race with the Broncos and with the Chiefs. What are your thoughts on the Indianapolis Colts right now?
Richard Sherman
I think they may be the best team in the afc and I know I'm going to get some flack for that because of the Buffalo Bills. But the Buffalo Bills have shown some chinks in the armor, no question about it. I haven't seen those same chinks from the Indianapolis Colts. Yes, they've lost the game, but even in the game they lost, I thought they could have won that game. If Adonai Mitchell doesn't drop the ball over the goal line, if he doesn't have that hold and call on Jonathan Taylor's 50 yard run, they easily win that game against the, the, the LA Rams.
Mitchell
So LA Rams.
Richard Sherman
So again, Indiana Jones, a guy just in an entirely different player from the guy that was in New York. Shane Steichen has injected belief in this guy confidence and, and, and they just look like a great team. They're complete. They can do it. On, on the ground. Jonathan Taylor looks like an MVP candidate. Ten rushing touchdowns on the season, one receiving touchdown, 11 total touchdowns, 16 carries for 94 yards. In this game he looked dominant and a lot of the T TD runs looked identical. You look at him, you're like, is that the first one or the second one or the third one? I'm not sure. But Daniel Jones could be an MVP candidate. They're not going to give MVP to a running back, unfortunately. Y' all can argue with somebody else. If they weren't gonna, if they didn't give it to Saquon last year and they're not going to give it to CMC the year before, they're not giving it to running backs. I think they should change the award and give the quarterbacks their own award so that they can give the MVP fairly and stop saying it's just a quarterback award because that's what they're making it right down. No matter what a running back does. They're not giving them the award no matter how valuable they are to their team. But defensively they played a great game. Even without Charvarius Ward in the lineup. Who, who went to IR with the concussion in the pregame from the game before, they looked incredible. They. They had three sacks in a game, two interceptions. They got Kenny Moore back in the lineup. They, they were giving Justin Herbert issues all over the place. Obviously they had three sacks. The Chargers offensive line has been absolutely decimated with injuries. Losing Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater. Not many teams can can overcome the loss of those two kind of caliber tackles. No matter what. Even if it was just your starting right and left tackle, that's a tough loss. But to have your starting right, right and left tackle be premier players and to lose them for the season the way they did, it's a tough pill to swallow. But Keenan Allen had a good game. 11 catches for 119 yards. He continues to be a safety blanket for Justin Herbert. Justin Herbert threw the ball 55 times today. That's what you're going to expect without Omarion Hampton in the lineup anymore. He's banged up there there without so many of their star players. You got it. Somebody else is going to have to step up. Quentin Johnson didn't have the, the, the game. He usually has, but Gadson steps up in his place. Seven catches for 164. Herbert throws for three touchdowns, 420 yards. But he had the two interceptions and, and that was a difference in the ball game. Again, the Colts look like the most complete team in the AFC and maybe the NFL. Both sides of the football. A top five defense, an offense that's incredibly balanced. And one thing that was notable in this game is when they had to get a first down to, to seal this game. They did what they ran one with Jonathan Taylor and they had to get another first down. Mitchell. And guess who they leaned on? Indiana Jones. They leaned on Indiana Jones to close this game out. And that just shows you the drastic change in the belief that they have in this young man. He's looking like an incredible player right now. He's looking like the first rounder that was drafted. And I look forward to seeing what they're going to do all season. I hope I'm right about this team. But it feels right because they're so balanced and they're so freaking good on defense. I, I love this for Lou Anarumo. I love this for him because he was, he was suffering in, in Cincinnati where they're spending all their money on the offense and nothing on the defense. And he's coming to a team that has more balance. He has more say so in the roster and it's, it's turning out really good.
Mitchell
And fortunately for the Indianapolis Colts, they get the unofficial bye week next week playing the Teddy Tennessee Titans. So, you know, it's very, very feasible. We could be looking at a seven to one team after eight weeks. But Richard, I want to dive a little bit more into Indiana Jones. Daniel Jones, I know we talked about it in podcast past, but Richard, the Indiana Jones, the New York Jones we saw last year in Daniel Jones, I mean, call me crazy, there's no way anyone could have seen this coming. How does this happen? I know it's coaching, I know it's structure, I know it's his system. But like Richard, you played in this league number of years. How in the world does this happen with Daniel Jones like that?
Richard Sherman
I, I, I can't totally explain it and say that I know all the answers because it's, I don't think it's that simple and clear. But I think it's something to be said about all these quarterbacks that are going to new places to these quarterback whispers and having success. I think they, they said Daniel Jones had a little bit of time with Kevin o' Connell and he said that was some of the most valuable time that he's had as a quarterback. He learned more in that time than I think he learned in all of his years in New York. And that's no shot at day ball and their staff because obviously they're doing a solid job with Jackson Dart right now. But sometimes when you lose your confidence early and, and fans get down on you, everybody gets down on you. Especially on, in a big market like New York. You saw it with Sam Darnold. It's hard to recover because once you're labeled, once you get labeled certain thing, it's hard to lose and shake that label. And I think it took him going somewhere else them really, really building an offense that, that, that emphasizes his skill set and what he does well. Supported by an incredible run game, a good running back, a good scheme, a good defense. You surround a quarterback with a good running game and a good defense he'll have a chance with. And then you speak confidence into him, put him in positions for him to be successful within his skill set, not, not ask him to do things that other quarterbacks did or somebody you worked with in the past, but design it specifically for him. And I think that's what the Indianapolis Colts and Shane Steichen have done, and that's why he's thriving.
Mitchell
It's unbelievably impressive. Richard, let's talk about the Kansas City Chiefs. They took care of their division rival, the Raiders, in dominating fashion. Everyone was worried about the Chiefs. I, I thought they were done. I mean, you, I don't know if you thought they were done or not, but they certainly do not look like they are done. They look dominant. Richard, 31 to nothing. Rasheed Rice is back in the fold. And he got involved very early, very often, what was it, four or five catches in the first quarter. He ends up with seven catches for 42 yards and two touchdowns. How important is Rasheed Rice to this offense?
Richard Sherman
I mean, the way they look today, he seems like the linchpin. He seems like the pivotal piece, at least for Patrick Mahomes to have success, because everything opened up with him. Back in offense, you see Travis Kelsey getting, getting his longest gain in four to five years, Rashi Rice having two touchdowns. Pacheco getting a little bit, a little bit more breathing room in there. But it's Patrick Mahomes that looked the best today. And I think that should be scary for the rest of the league because, no, I didn't, I didn't think they were done. And I told you this, I said, I'm not counting the Kansas City Chiefs out anymore. Not ever. I don't care. Unless they're, unless they're shown to be statistically disqualified from the playoffs and they're, they're eliminated. I believe they go, they're gonna have a chance at the end because that's what they've done. If they get in a tournament, they're probably going to make it to the end. And nobody wants to see him. Nobody wants to see the Kansas City Chiefs on their schedule in January. No, you don't. You don't. You could say you do. The Buffalo Bills, you don't. Indianapolis Colts would love to avoid them. Like, there's nobody that's like, hey, yeah, let's get the Kansas City chief. Jacksonville Jaguars. I know you guys felt good about that win. You would hate to see them coming to Jacksonville in January because guess what? Go ahead and book your vacations because it's over with. And that's the way they've been. They've been in the super bowl five of the last six years. So we'd be foolish. We'd be foolish to think anything else because that's what they've proven. You got to get. Sometimes you got to give people respect of the respect of their past. Mitchell. Hey, this is what they've done. This is what they've shown. This is their reputation. Their reputation, champions, their reputation. They're going to make the show. So look, until they don't live up to their reputation, I. I'll think they'll be in it regardless of what's going on. We've seen seasons where Patrick Mahomes has struggled early. They've gone to the Super Bowl. We've seen years where he looked like the MVP candidate. They've gone to the Super Bowl. We've seen play years where they're a defensive team. They've gone to the super bowl, you know, where they're. They're really, really driven by their run game. They've gone to the Super Bowl. So they've shown. Andy Reid has shown. Spags has shown they can do it a lot of different ways. Whatever way that it needs to get done, they can. They can adapt and get it done. So I've had a lot of belief in them and I continue to do that. The way the defense played today against the Raiders, I don't think I've seen anything like that. I think they said The Raiders had 30 offensive plays, the least amount of plays since like 20, since 2002, I think it was. They had 75 yards passing, 25 yards rushing. I mean, abysmal. That's abysmal offense in the National Football League. And I feel awful for Pete Carroll and his staff because that, you know, I. You're not sure they're going to have a job. I don't think the Raiders are going to fire anybody in season. They've done that enough. It doesn't work, but hopefully they give them another year. But that's a rough game, especially a division rival to come back like that to. To come back from. Obviously, Geno Smith is struggling a lot this year. I think he's leading the league and interceptions and they just don't look like a confident team. Obviously, being without Brock Bowers, Jacoby Myers was out. Everybody's calling to trade for your best pass rusher and Max Crosby. It may maybe time to look at that. You know, it may be time to look at some of those things and allow these guys to see what life's like somewhere else. Put Max Crosby. Could you imagine Mike Crosby on the Indianapolis Colts or the Seattle Seahawks or the San Francisco, you know, just somewhere else where he could be immediately impactful, have a chance to have a winning season. If you put him on the Colts. Sheesh. Sheesh, Mitchell, that changes that dynamic immediately.
Mitchell
I couldn't even imagine, Richard. I mean, fortunately for you, you played on a lot of winning teams. I mean, could you imagine being in Max Crosby situation right now, in the prime of your care and a proverbial dumpster fire in Las Vegas?
Richard Sherman
No, I couldn't. I couldn't because I would ask for out. I, I, I'm sorry. I'm not built to, to keep losing like that, especially, you know, the way he's showing up to work, going full speed, going as hard as he can every week. He's not giving up at any point in the game. He plays four quarters all the way to the clock, strikes zero. You want to have a chance to actually be playing for something. And he's given this organization everything he could and they had. You know, unfortunately, it hasn't worked out like it should for him. Same thing is true for Miles Garrett. You hope those guys get a chance to play in the postseason, to make impactful plays in January, to see what it feels like to play in championship games and Super Bowls on the biggest stage in the brightest lights. But if they stay where they are, it doesn't look like they'll get that chance and it's just unfair to the game. So hopefully, you know, something positive happens. Obviously, it's not the Raiders season this year. The Chiefs have the commanders next playing, you know, and it doesn't look like Jaden Daniels will be back, so they'll likely be facing Marcus Mariota and that's a game they could win as well. So you talk about getting back on the right track. They're four and three now. They could be looking at five and three. And like you said, the, the Denver Broncos need to create some distance between them and the Kansas City Chiefs because again, they'll, they'll sneak up on you and, and be coming for the one or two seed at the end of the year.
Mitchell
No question. I mean, shoot, I became a believer again in the Chiefs last week when they took care of my Detroit Lions. But this week with Rasheed Rice back, man, I, I think they put the national media and landscape of the NFL on notice that they have never left. They are firmly back in that championship caliber conversation. Hey, what's up? It's Mario Lopez.

Talk about the Philadelphia Eagles. They go on the road. They take care of the Minnesota Vikings 28 to 22. Jalen Hurts has a solid game. I mean his best game of the season. No question about a 1923, 326 yard, three touchdowns. He found his buddy always open A.J. brown four receptions for 121 and two touchdowns. I know you gotta love to see that. The first, I guess quarter of the season, this Philly offense just had no identity and now they still can't run the football, but they finally figured out how to throw it and they take care of the Minnesota Vikings. I'm not going to leave this game and think, hey Philly is is dominant. I don't think they are. I mean Carson Wentz gifted him an interception. He did not look good at all. But Richard, what are your thoughts on this Philadelphia Eagles team? They escaped Minnesota with a win.
Richard Sherman
I think this was really good for the locker room. Obviously there was a ton of frustration going on both with the pass game. Both receivers were frustrated, Saquon Barkley's frustrated and overall Jalen Hurts played one of the best games of his of the season. He was very efficient. 19 of 23 for 326 and three touchdowns. Again, like you said, the running game still can't find his ground and some of it is schematic, some of it. You don't have Makai Becton at a right guard. You don't have a a embarrassment of riches like they did before. Still kind of banged up on that offensive line. They're not healthy and that hurts everything. But yeah, A.J. brown having four receptions for 121 and two touchdowns in a critical catch late in the game that sealed the game on the double move. Those are the things you need to give yourself a chance late in the season and to keep these guys happy. Devonte Smith has been having good games and great games. This is one of his best games. I think this is a career high 183 and a touchdown. But you need to have These guys healthy if you're going to have any chance late in the season. Jalen Carter being back obviously helped this defense a ton. They look like they might have lost a Dory Jackson for, for a bit of time, but they still made big plays. They had a pick six in this game and that ended up being the difference in this ball game against the Vikings team that's obviously playing Carson Wentz and, and you know, had some struggles with their offensive line, but I don't know, I still don't know what to make of this team. I'm not necessarily ready to, to put them back in the top five and say, man, the, the Eagles are back because it just doesn't feel that way right now. It still feels like there's some hiccups there, some, some struggles that are unnecessary. There's not enough balance. Is this sustainable. Can Jalen Hurts played this efficiently, this effectively every single game? Can the defense create a pick six and in another turnover every game? I'm not sure. I think they can win the next one. They play the Giants so they, they could come back and, and end up splitting this season with the Giants. But I think there's something to be said that about, you know, their offensive struggles at least running the football. Jalen Hurts played a phenomenal game and it still came down to the wire. He played one of his best games of the season and still came down to a, a really incredible throwing catch for him against, against the Minnesota Vikings against their zero blitz pressure. And so I hope they figured it out. But it's to be seen. You know, this, this is an ever evolving league and an ever evolving situation with the Philadelphia.
Mitchell
They're just different in the standpoint that, you know, not only offensively do they look different, but defensively. You talked about it last week with the absence of Milton Williams and Josh Sweat, they let those guys walk in free agency. You know, they reset. They signed Zadarius Smith from my Detroit Lions, unfortunately. But that experiment didn't last very long. He just announced his retirement. Now we're hearing that Brandon Graham might be coming back potentially. He's mulling coming out of retirement. Do you think that's a good idea for both sides?
Richard Sherman
Yeah, I mean it always makes sense. Pass rushers, it's a very specialty position and, and it's one of those things either you have it or you don't have it. And Brandon Graham obviously has it obviously fits into this scheme and it would. He. He means so much. That locker room. He would come in and fit in right away with Their, with their depth, you know, being depleted, you know, Nolan Smith being on ir, he'd be a welcome addition. So I, I think it, it could work out, but I'm not sure that's going to actually happen or, or if he'll wait till later in the season, you know, maybe make that playoff run, which would be, which would be a really cool story, no question about it. And the Vikings on the other side got some decisions to make. We got them this Thursday night in LA against the Chargers, and they got to figure out if they're going to play J.J. mcCarthy or they're going to stick with Carson Wentz. And like you said, Carson Wentz had some really, really bad interceptions today. The pick six where he was under duress and he just put the ball in harm's way and they rented in for a touchdown. Are plays you can't have. Without that play, you know, they, they may find a way to win this game, but with that play makes it incredible, incredibly different, difficult to beat the defending champions. And it's going to be incredibly difficult to beat the Chargers and Justin Herbert. If you make those kind of mistakes, they're going to make you pay for it. So I don't, I'm not sure the old line is good enough for them to put J.J. mcCarthy behind it again. You know, I'm not sure he's, he's processing as fast as Carson Wentz is and, and going to be able to execute the offense as well. Just in, in youth, you know, I know people are like, oh man, he's a, he's the number one. He's number 10 pick and he, I hear you, but he's a rookie and, and Carson Wentz is still a veteran who's processing. It's the same thing when you, when you have a guy like Flacco come into to Cincinnati and they're like, man, Jake Browning was doing all this. Flaco's a veteran. He's played for 18 years. He's seen a lot of football. He understands it. He sees it in the way the coaches see it. He'll be able to recognize when the safety is dropping, when they're splitting, when the rush is coming. It's not going to be necessarily perfect, but when you don't have a great offensive line, you give yourself the best chance with a veteran quarterback who could at least presumably get you to the, to the right play and get you to the right situation and make the right decision in most situations. Obviously he didn't today. He threw for 300 yards, zero touchdowns, two interceptions. So what? Didn't work out like they wanted it to today. But I think, I think they're going to stick with Carson Wentz because you just don't want to put him, put a rookie behind this offensive line and have this pass rush get to him.
Mitchell
I, I don't think I like either option, Honestly, Richard. Either Carson Wentz or J.J. mcCarthy. I really don't. I can't believe I'm saying this, but do you think the Minnesota Vikings are kicking themselves for not re signing Daniel Indiana Jones this off season?
Richard Sherman
Yeah. Yes, I do. I think they're kicking themselves, but I don't think they could have afforded it. I mean, you look at it now and they had Sam Darnold and Indiana Jones in the fold. You're like, literally, wow, wow, look how that worked out. And you ended up with Carson Wentz and J.J. mcCarthy. And if it doesn't get better again, it. Hindsight is 20 20. We can always sit back here as Monday morning quarterbacks and be like, man, they should have done this. They should have done this. But clearly their, you know, scouting department and research and what, what Sam Darnold was asking for, they felt like this was the best decision they can make at the time and give themselves a chance to win. Obviously, it looks like Sam Darnold is, is thriving in Seattle. One of the most efficient quarterbacks in the league. His connection with Jackson, Smith and Jigba is one of the best in the league. And then you got Daniel Jones, who's doing incredibly with the Indianapolis Colts. But I think there's something to be said about, about sitting and waiting and being healthy and learning from the quarterback in front of you. But we'll see. Because you don't want to have another situation where J.J. mcCarthy gets out there, he gets banged up, his confidence is shot, the fans stop believing in him. The fans start believing that he's not the answer. And then you lose things going forward. You lose the confidence. Right now, there's still that mystery. There's still that air of a mystery. Maybe he's the answer. Maybe he just haven't figured it out yet. But you put him out there three, four games and it doesn't go well, and they're gonna, you're gonna lose that mystery, Mitchell. People are gonna say, hey, he's a bust. Because. Because we're in a microwave age. Everybody's either the best or a bust every week. You know, that's just the age we're in. You can complain about it all you want. That's reality.
Mitchell
No question. About it. Before we leave this game, we saw a very unique, I guess, strategy against the Tush Push. We've seen teams try to approach defending the Tush Push in a number of different ways. This is a first, a guy was lined up, I guess sideways to the line and all fours. Richard, if you. First off to our viewers, if you guys have not seen this, just take a look at it. YouTube, Google it, do whatever. But Minnesota Vikings use a very unique strategy. Lining a guy up on all fours in front of the, in front of the, the center. Richard, what do you make of this approach?
Richard Sherman
It's just teams trying to figure out an answer for it. You know, something that can change it up, something different. And maybe somebody uses that and, and builds on it and figures out a different way to put him or a different place to put him. But it's gonna, this is the National Football League. It's not gonna just be stagnant and guys just continue and let them run a play and have a hundred percent success. They're gonna do things and they're not going to just concede that it's just the first down when they line up. An affirmation. They're going to try different things to try to find an answer for it. And that was just a. The, the Minnesota Vikings and, and Brian Flores trying something new.
Mitchell
Let's talk about the New England Patriots. They continue their winning ways like the Patriots of old. I mean, they take care of the, the lowly Tennessee Titans on the road. But Drake May, I mean, Richard, you want to talk about efficiency, this guy looks like a stud. 21 of 23, 222 yards, two touchdowns. He's given the New England Patriots life. You gotta love the job that Mike Frable's done his first year on the job. It just seems like so, so much of a hand in glove fit for New England. Do you think New England's back? I mean, their schedule is so weak going forward. They play the Browns next week, then they got a decent challenge against the Atlanta Falcons and then a true test against Tampa Bay. But assuming they beat Cleveland next week, they are six and two. I mean, this team after last year and the year before that and the year before that, ever since Tom Brady left, has been struggling to find their new identity. Do you think they found it in Drake May?
Richard Sherman
Yeah, I definitely think they found it. And I, I think they've also found what I talked about earlier, the balance where mondre Stevenson had 18 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown. They're running the ball well. Booty had an incredible catch for a touchdown. Drake Ma put pushing the ball down the field and as accurate as anybody in the National Football League on deep passes this year. And it was obviously apparent today. He threw for 222 and two touchdowns, 21 and 23. And the defense had four sacks. You have to play good defense. You have to have a run game because the run game helps your defense, gives them some rest, be effective on third down, be efficient in the red zone. And that's what they've done. Drake May has grown this year and, and again, they're doing everything they can. Mike Bravel is putting them in positions to be successful. They. You knew he would want to win this game versus the Tennessee Titans. They let him go and literally just fired his replacement last week because I guess they didn't want to send his replacement in there for him to look that man in the eye and try to. Yeah, I think they would have ran the score up even more if Callahan was still a coach. But yeah, I agree with you. They have multiple games against the Miami Dolphins. I think they got another game against the jets this game because they're in AFC east, it's a favorable schedule, and they've already went into Buffalo and got a win. So you look at that and you're like, hey, you got to feel confident that you're going to win those games. Miami's kind of imploding right now. You're not sure if Mike McDaniel is going to be there by the time they play the New England Patriots again late in the season. New York hasn't won a game yet, and you beat Buffalo, you could beat the Browns. Obviously, Quentin Judic is, is running the ball really well now, so the Browns look a little bit better, but they're, they're going to roll out a rookie quarterback and I'm sure Mike Vrabel will have a plan for him to confuse him, to make, to give him dynamic looks. They'll have to deal with Miles Garrett in that defense and, and Tyson Campbell, who had a pick six in the game this week. So the, the Browns aren't just. Just laying down for anybody. They're. They're trying to be competitive and they're going to compete in that game. So it's not necessarily an easy win, but I like their chances in it. I think the Patriots, I don't know about Patriots of old, you know, they were a dynasty that won six Super Bowls and went to 10. So let's not get ahead of ourselves, but they're definitely a competitive team right now.

Let's talk about the Tennessee Titans very briefly here. Richard. If we had a redraft, a 2025 redraft, is it Cam Ward or is it Jackson Dark going off the board first for the Tennessee Titans?
Richard Sherman
I think it's still Cam Ward. I think they still go with Cam Ward. I think they like what they see in him. I think. I think that he obviously doesn't have enough talent around him, doesn't have enough structure around him, which is why they fired the, the head coach. I think again, when you, when you talk about these quarterbacks development, who the offensive coordinator is, what the system is, how are you playing to his strengths? What does he do well? What does he do incredibly well? Can you put him in positions to do that again and again and again and not challenge him to do things that he's uncomfortable doing or at least teach him how to be better at those things? And I think that's sometimes what, what you get in a position where you see a quarterback struggle because he's thrown into a situation where they're expecting him to be developed and him to have the answers. And you didn't put a, you didn't put a great vet or. You know what I mean? Sometimes you put a great bet around him. You like Marcus Mariota. The Washington commanders put Marcus Mariota in the quarterback room with, with Jaden Daniels so he could be kind of a mentor to him. Obviously, Jaden Daniels is a starter. He's the guy, but he can help him get ready for these games to, to. To know what to see, what to. Where to look, how to prepare, how to take care of his body. You, you. You want to have those things sometimes. And I'm not sure they have that right now for Cam Ward and, and I don't. I think next year when they go to. To get ahead coach, that's going to be at the forefront. They're going to look for somebody that can help develop him and help play to his strengths and really bring the best out of him as a player. I don't, I don't. I like Jackson Dart. I think he's in a perfect spot with D. I think that all worked out as it should. But I don't think this. That is an indictment against Cam Ward or this season is. I think this was a lost season for the Tennessee Titans because they're. They aren't a very talented team outside of Cam Ward. But I think there is somebody else that could get the most out of him.
Mitchell
I think management should also reconsider trading AJ Brown for a pick that netted him Trayvon Burks. But I guess that's neither here nor there. Richard, don't look now, but the Chicago Bears are 4 and 2. And I guess my main question is to you as a Detroit lion fan, should I be worried with them being in the NFC North?
Richard Sherman
I don't know if you should be worried. It is cool that they're. They're 4 and 2, but they've they've gotten some wins against some teams that, that aren't necessarily contenders. I don't think they're ready for the, the big time yet, but it's good for them. They've won, I think four in a row now. Ben Johnson is doing a good job getting the most out of the players, just building culture. And I think that's what they're focused on, just building winning habits, winning tendencies, making the right play, making the right decisions in these, in game situations. I don't think they're looking too far in the future or worried about the playoffs or anything like that. I think they're taking it one game at a time and trying to get, get Caleb Williams where he needs to go. He's 15 of 26 today for 172 and an interception. And they had 222 yards running the football. DeAndre Swift had 19 carries for 124. And I think that's what this offensive line is built to do. Again, like I've said for the history of football, you look at championship teams and most of them will tell you run game and get defense. And then if your quarterback is dynamic and can get the job done, that's a plus. That's going to take you over the top. You're going to win a Super Bowl. But right now they're, they're developing those habits. Their defense is making plays. They had four sacks, three interceptions in this game and that's what they're doing. That's what, how they're building their winning habits. They're consistently doing the things necessary, building their foundation, building their fundamentals, and that's what's allowing them to, to, to keep winning.
Mitchell
As you said, the running game was active today. DeAndre Swift, 19 carries for 124 and a touchdown. And then the rookie out of Rutgers, Kyle Manung Guy, 13 and 81 in a touchdown. That's, that's big for the Chicago Bears team, albeit against the New Orleans Saints. Winning is important. You're never gonna undersell a win. Winning in the NFL, as you would say, Richard, is not easy. And it's big time for Ben Johnson in this team. I, I, A lot of Detroiters have animosity towards Ben Johnson, but I'm glad to see him succeeding, especially with what we're seeing with Aaron Glennon in New York. You like to have one of your former coordinators at least finding some success. The one team I do not want to see succeed is the, the Green Bay packers. But they squ squeaked out a win in Arizona, 27 to 23. Richard, when we saw the new or the Green Bay packers dominate the Detroit Lions Week 1, I thought we were looking at a team that was going to walk away with the nfc. But over the last couple weeks, it looks like a team that's just skating on the edge of victory or defeat. And today they skated on that edge and walked away with the W. What do you make of this Green Baker packers team? Because to me, they don't look all that impressive. You know, Jordan Love only throws for 179 yards in a touchdown. Josh Jacobs, you know, carried the load two touchdowns, but only rushed for 55 yards. It was the defense and Micah Parsons with three sacks that really won them this game. What do you see in Green Bay? Do you see them as a NFC contender? They got a lot of work to do still.
Richard Sherman
Well, and I know Green Bay packers fans and I know we just, we're just never going to agree on this because they will go as Jordan Love goes, because teams will not let you beat them with Josh Jacobs. They will not. They will if that's your best and you're saying your best player. And I would agree with you, I think their best bet is when Josh Jacobs gets going, everything else opens up. They're a really good offense. But when Josh Jacobs gets stopped, when teams stack the box and find a way to stop Jacobs, can Jordan Love beat you? And if that's what teams are doing, then is Jordan Love the guy? You know what I mean? Because if they're going to say, hey, we're going to make him play quarterback and beat us like that, and we're going to say, hey, we don't think he can do it, then that brings up more questions than answers. But that's what teams are going to do. And if he can answer the bail, and obviously they need to get more healthy at receiver. I think Christian Watson is coming back. They need to get Jaden Reed back. But that's what it's going to come down to. Their defense is going to be solid. They're going to be. They've been in position to win just about every game. The Browns game, I thought they were in position to win that game. I thought their defense played well. They didn't give up a touchdown until the interception from Jordan Love. And then they were in scoring position. They scored a touchdown, ended up winning that game. But the same thing was true here. You know, I thought Jordan Love struggled a little bit and then they. Some plays were made. You know, he pushed the ball down the field a little bit, hit Matthew golden on a deep pass and then it started to open up Josh Jacobs. Once they got in the red zone, it was a critical situation. They handed it off to Josh Jacobs. He sees that end zone, he gets within the goal line. It's, he's going to find a way to get in there and that's what he did. He's a great player. Their defense had six sacks today. That was the big thing. Michael Parsons had never, never in his career had a three sack game. He did today, he did today because they had to have it. And he sacked Jacobe Brissette three times in this game. Rashan Gary had one. And that's what it took. It, that's what it took. Quaid Walker had a second a half in this game. Their defense was making plays and they were giving their team a chance. But I don't think it should be this hard versus the Arizona Cardinals. Now the Arizona Cardinals could definitely have a different, a different record. They, they lost multiple games at the wire, last second field goals, at least two of those games. This game came down to the wire. So they've been playing good football. You got to give Josh Gannon a lot of credit for the way they've been battling. They're without Kyler Murray, they're without their star running back. And I think that should be uploaded. You know, they're still figuring it out with, with Marvin Harrison Jr. He, you know, he's had up and down games and, and he's figured it out. There was some PI calls he drew today and made some cool catches, but they, but overall they went against a backup quarterback and it came down to the wire. And so I think there's something to be said in there about the quarterback position. And I know people are like, man, you're so hard on him. But that's the point. That's what you're supposed to be when you, it would be different if these quarterbacks were on rookie deals. When you're on a rookie deal, you get the benefit of the doubt. That's just how it goes. You get the benefit of doubt. You get less criticism, you get the excuses. Hey, he's a rookie. He's learning. Once you're not on that rookie deal and you're one of the highest paid players in the National Football League, you get criticism. I'm sorry, I'm not gonna, you're not gonna say, hey, man, these guys make a $55 million. They don't have to be elite. They don't have to be, be Perfect. Like give him a break. Like what then? What do we say then? What do you want us to say, man? We. They don't need Jordan Love to play better. He can just keep doing like this. It, it's up to everybody else to play better and, and to lift him up. And Josh Jacobs got to do everything. So like they need both. But if Josh Jacobs doesn't get going and you're a $55 million quarterback, then it should be okay to depend on you to win us this game. And I thought he made some plays today to help win this game, so I'll give him credit. But that's what it's going to come down to on whether this team gets to a Super bowl wins in the playoffs or if they don't, because teams are going to make them play left handed. They're not going to let him beat them with Josh Jacobs running the football. And it won't be any fault of Josh Jacobs. He'll do everything he can. But they're going to stack the box. It's going to be eight man boxes. They're going to man these receivers. And if they win and Jordan Love has a good game, the Green Bay packers will win. No question about it. I believe they will win. And they, they're talented enough to do it, especially when they're receiving core gets.
Mitchell
Healthy well on the opposite side of the field, opposite side of the ball rather. Micah Parsons flat out won them this game. Clutch moments, crucial moments late in the game, getting sacks, taking care of the Arizona Cardinals. But his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, get an impressive win at home. A dominating win. Richard, seven weeks into the season. Now how do you analyze this trade? Because the Dallas Cowboys look competitive. They gained a bunch of assets and cap space with dealing Michael Parsons. Do you view this still as the wrong move seven weeks into the season?
Richard Sherman
Yeah, I don't, I don't think you ever can view it as a great move. I think, I think the, the Dallas Cowboys are in a great position offensively. I think they to. To steal George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers the way they did and for him to blossom into the kind of receiver that everybody thought he'd be coming out of Georgia is really cool to see. And now CD Lamb is back and they look like an explosive duel today. The, the, The Cowboys scored 44 today and, and Dak Prescott, if, if they were, if they had a better record. Dak Prescott has an incredible argument to be in the MVP conversation, offensive player of the year conversation. He has played phenomenal football this season. And with or without CD Lamb in the lineup and for him to get his star receiver back and continue to grow and continue to play that way and continue to put up points. And now his defense is starting to show up and get some stops and give him more possessions, and it's starting to roll. Javonte Williams is, Is. Is continuing to. To look like his old self and run the football with, with aggressiveness and violence. I'd say both teams feel comfortable right now. Both teams feel comfortable about how it went. But The packers are 41 and 1. They're in position to, to. To continue to win and, and maybe potentially chase a 1 seed in the NFC. And I'm not sure the Cowboys are especially defensively, but I think you would want Michael Parsons on your team if you're Dallas Cowboys. And I don't think the Packers. I think the packers would be a worse team if they didn't have him. I don't think The packers would be 411 if they didn't have Michael Parsons. So again, I still feel like they won this trade. You won't know what the Cowboys got from Michael Parsons until the draft. They got draft picks. So how will those draft picks pan out? How do they affect winning in the future? We'll see. But right now Michael Parsons is making an immediate impact for the Green Bay packers and helping them win. Win real National Football League games like he did today. Had three sacks. So I think both sides are. Are content for now.
Mitchell
Richard, we got to talk real quick before we wrap about a coach that's on the hot seat. Mike McDaniel goes on the road against Cleveland Browns, a team you think the Miami Dolphins and a coach that desperately needs a win would show up for. They did not. Did not at all. They took a drumming 31 to 6 against the Cleveland Browns. Richard, how hot is this hot seat? How much longer does this last in Miami with Mike McDaniel?
Richard Sherman
I'm. I'm not sure. I'm not sure because again, this is. And people call me the quarterback hater or whatever. I'm not a quarterback hater, but I, I'm accountability. I'm accountability. They pay. They're paying to a tongue of I lower. $53 million a year. They're not paying Josh McDaniel, I mean Mike McDaniel $53 million. They're paying tuatanga Vailoa. So Tua Tango Vailoa has had back to back three interception games. That is unacceptable. That's not acceptable in any, any respect for any position anybody. So of Course, you got to give Mike McDaniel. He's the head coach, he's the offensive guru. All you got to give him some, some criticism. But the criticism also goes to the player. And for you to go into the media and speak the way you did last week to a tango, and I know I've harped on this enough, but, and continue to play like this, Mike McDaniel goes out there in his press conference and said, if, if you're negatively affecting the football team routinely, I don't have a choice but to assess a different player. And we're going to find out who and what we're made of. And he's speaking directly to Tuatanga Vua. I'm sure he's speaking to other players, but he's speaking to the quarterback and he replaced him in the game with Quentin Ewers. And, and what do they. Could you imagine a world where they, they, they, they start Quinn Quinn. His name is giving me Quinn Ewers. Quinn Ewers, Quinn, Quinn Ewers, Quinn Urs next week. I, I, I. What does that do for Tua Tanga Valoa's career? What does that do for the league? And even if you fire Mike McDaniel, you still have Tuatanga Vailoa and, and you have an injured Tyreek Hill, who's a big cap hit you, you have, you still have issues. Devon and Chain is, is, is playing really well. 13 carries for 82 yards. He bust some big ones today, but you can't, you can't pause Paul's. He got some big ones. That's crazy. But you can't, you can't just depend on that. If you don't have a pass game, then, then you can't open up the run game. So you got Jalen Waddle, who's, who's out there is a big speed, big threat and all this stuff, but the quarterback has absolutely no confidence. He's thrown over 10 interceptions on or thrown 10 interceptions on the season. I don't know who's the problem and who's the answer, because you've seen success from both of them. But right now it's unacceptable play from the quarterback, and it's unacceptable play from the team. Overall. They're, they're struggling. The Browns ran the ball well on them. They threw the ball well on them. They're going against the rookie quarterback, Dylan Gabriel, 13 for 18 for 116. Nothing crazy, but Judkins had 25 carries for 84 yards and three touchdowns. And they just look like a better team than you. And. And obviously they have Miles Garrett. They're. They're a tough outfit on defense. I think they're a good defense. And, and obviously the record doesn't show what they really are. They're 2 and 5, but they still have talent on defense. We talked about Dyson Campbell and his pick six in this game, but they also have Ward on the other side. They have some players on defense that could get the job done and play at a high level. But this is unacceptable play from quarterback. You cannot. You cannot be above criticism making $53 million. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You.
Lenovo Advertiser
These.
Richard Sherman
There's too many quarterbacks making $50 million that guys are making excuses for. With great pay comes great responsibility and great accountability and great criticism. Is it fair? No, but is it fair you're making $53 million. We'll see. You know, you getting paid for this job and this comes with the job. So a quarterback that's thrown six interceptions in two weeks, I mean, he's part of the problem.
Mitchell
Seeing as how the Indianapolis Colts have done it, the Minnesota Vikings have done it. I'm not paying a guy that I'm unsure of 50 plus million dollars. I'm going to go and look for a guy that's hasn't had success elsewhere and pay him far less and see if I can rejuvenate his career. Because this Miami Dolphins team is going nowhere fast. And I don't know how long this deal is for Tua Tungavailoa. Richard. But Richard, it's not looking like it's going to end well in Miami for Mike McDaniel. Because of it all.
Richard Sherman
Odds and lines come from our partners at Hard Rock. Bet. We've got two Monday Night Football games tomorrow. The Seahawks versus the Titans and the Lions versus the Buccaneers.
Mitchell
The Seahawks are favored by three against Houston Texans. You got the Seahawks covering Richard?
Richard Sherman
No question about it, Mitchell. They got jsn, one of the best receivers in the National Football League. Sam Darnold playing his best football, K9. And then they got a D line full of hunters.
Mitchell
They're gonna cover my. My main question is, Richard, can they win at home?
Richard Sherman
Well, they got to deal with the noise. They got to deal with it. But Mitchell, it's no time like the present.
Mitchell
Fair enough. And how about this? I'll be in Ford Field. The Detroit Lions are favored by six points against Tampa Bay. Who do you like? You like the Lions to cover? Come on, give me some love here, Richard.
Richard Sherman
I want to give him some love. But Mitchell, that was a struggle fest against the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buccaneers are number one on in my power rankings. I can't have them being -6 in the game. Mitchell, I know they're going to make it a game. I expect them to potentially win this game. With Mike Evans healthy now back in the lineup, Ameka Buka questionable, maybe, maybe even Chris Godwin. Mitchell, it's been a while. Mike Evans is going to come back with a vengeance.
Mitchell
I love that they're number one in your power ranks because guess what? The Detroit Lions beating your number one power ranked team might earn them the shot back at being number one. I guess we'll see.
Richard Sherman
We'll see.
