Hey, what's up guys? It's Levar Arrington here from up on Game. Wanted to talk to you about a serious issue. Hate. You know, something personal that I have experienced and witnessed and watched is how the hate in our country is getting so out of control. It's at an all time high and people are facing way too much hate. A lot of people don't think it's a problem, but I do. I can recall growing up being in high school. One of my high school teammates, good dude too, just happened to wear a shirt that was a derogatory shirt towards my racial group. It depicted Malcolm X moments after he was assassinated and it just made me feel really, really sad. It made me feel upset and so many other emotions. And it's really because we're supposed to be a team, but it's going to take all of us to stop that sort of hate. As I mentioned, we are a team in this country. So let's take a break from hate so our team can regroup and regain our momentum. We need to take a time out Against Hate. Visit standuptoallhate.org to help and join me in calling for a time out against hate by following at what's up with Hate? Or posting the blue square emoji with AMEX Platinum.

All right, man, go ahead. Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast brought to you by our friends and partners over at Breitling. Today is the day I get my Seattle Seahawks Breitling. And before that, I have an incredible guest defensive end for the Seattle Seahawks, Uchina Nu. He's been incredible in his career and I cannot wait to see him back on the field in full force this Sunday night. It's going to be incredible. I appreciate you joining me, brother. I'm so happy to see you back on the field. How you feeling?
Uchina Nwosu
What's going on, Ms. Sharon? I'm good, I'm good. Just happy to be back out there.
Richard Sherman
So good, man. And we were just talking about this before we started, but it's a grown man game on that D line, O line like it's a whole different game than we play on the edges. And so you got it. You got to take your time coming back. You said you feel good. How you feel with your second week of able to, you know what I mean, getting contact and ramping it up.
Uchina Nwosu
Yeah, definitely taking a step up this week, you know, when that first game back after however many weeks I've been out, you know, any athlete knows it's tough, you know, trying to get back into rhythm, just trusting yourself again, having confidence, you know. So I used that last week was kind of that confidence builder and I feel more and more confident as I'm going to this next week against the Packers.
Richard Sherman
Look, I talk to people about this all the time because I've been in competition committee meetings and you know, as a vice president of nflpa and it's really frustrating because they talk about all this health and safety stuff. They talk about it all the time. And when I sit there and say, all right, health and safety, right? No blindside blocks. No. You know what I mean? Hitting the offense up high. No hitting them down low. So then why are y'all letting our D lineman get chipped? Like, they're engaging, they're hand on hand, and y'all letting them get rib checked by a guy they're not looking at?
Uchina Nwosu
Yeah, it's ridiculous.
Richard Sherman
It's ridiculous, and they won't change it. And they're like, well, you know, that's. That's to protect the quarterback. I said, so are we protecting everybody or just some people?
Uchina Nwosu
Nah, I say the same thing, man. They're making the game really hard for defensive players now, really, with the new. With all the rule changes and the way we got to tackle and the way we can get hit, deliver the hit, you know, it's always the revolving door, but, you know, we got to adjust and got to keep playing, man.
Richard Sherman
It's been so much nonsense, even. I just saw something couple minutes ago about Kirby Joseph, and, you know, some. I don't know what fan. It was a Green Bay packers fan, I guess, sitting there calling Kirby Joseph dirty because he's hitting tight ends low. He hitting them at their knees because he's a small safety, and they 265, and they're like, oh, he should be hitting them at the waist. I said, y'all. Y'all didn't lost your damn minds. Y'all have gone outside y'all minds. Y'all now. Y'all want us to aim for a box this small while dude is moving up and down and in and out and left and right and so. But.
Uchina Nwosu
But.
Richard Sherman
Sorry, I'm going on a rant because. Because the way you got hurt was another one of them plays. And I. You know, I. I don't even want to hear. You know what I mean, make you say anything about it, because you've already spoke your piece on it, but I get to speak my piece now. Like, that was some bull. That was some total bull. Like, and if it happened on the other side, they'd be so quick to call us dirty and so quick to say, oh, man, we deserve to be suspended. But when that play happens, they're just like, it's part of the game. Yeah, what you mean? What you. What you mean is part of the game? I'm out for however many games, and he gets to keep playing over a weak preseason play. Right, Right. I agree. Sorry. That was just Frustrating. Sorry, I went on my rant, but how you feeling about this week? Big, big game coming up, obviously. Again, another game. Y'all gotta have two game lead and division. It just seems like this defense and his team overall has started to figure it out.
Uchina Nwosu
Yeah, yeah, we are starting to figure out, you know, we're trusting this game a lot more. Everybody's playing together, communicating out there, flying around, having fun. So, you know, we're treating every week like it's a playoff game at this point, which it pretty much is if we want to secure the division title, which we haven't done here since, you know, 2020, I believe. So everybody's on a mission right now. We see the bigger picture. Everybody's hungry. We all believe in and trusting. So we just got to keep doing what we're doing. Fundamentally. Sound technique, sound, you know, just homing on the basics and, you know, we can go far.
Richard Sherman
There was a lot of concern when, when, when, you know, they, they traded Jerome Baker or they, you know, they traded him, they cut Tyrell Dotson, and then they brought in Ernest Jones and, and elevated Therese Knight. And now it just seems like since they made those changes, that's when the defense is really taking off. Ernest Jones just looks like a revelation. I mean, for a guy to come in during a bye week and, and fit in in the way he has, I'm surprised they ain't stamped the C on his jersey yet because he just seems to be making that kind of impact week in and week out. He had to turn over and it just seems like he's making the right fits, he's flying around, he's playing fast. The young rook is playing fast as well. Talk about their impact.
Uchina Nwosu
Yeah, EJ's been doing a great job. Happily got him. You know, he's. He brings that sense of level, like, level headedness and calmness to the defense. I feel like we were missing, especially in the middle linebacker position, you know, and he just knows how to communicate. He knows how to talk to guys, you know, how to, you know, get guys going and, you know, to have like that confidence building right in the middle of the defense is very important. And he compliments Tyrese the rookie really well. You know, he gives him the confidence to keep playing. We always knew he had the talent. And, you know, all those early reps he got in camp, he was running with the ones a lot. You know, running with the twos. Almost every rep didn't come out in training camp. You know, those are paying dividends now. You know, he's Got the taste he's seen, he's had a lot of preseason action and his confidence is just, you know, building. He always knew, you know, some guy always got to stay ready. And that's just the type of guy he is. He stayed in the playbook, you know, stayed in the recovery room to keep his body on tight, and now he's producing at a high level.
Richard Sherman
It's going to be, it's going to be your first game, I guess, in a long time playing with the big cat. And he seems to have found his legs about him, been making a lot of plays, forcing a lot of double teams, which is going to make your job a whole lot easier. And how exciting is that, you know, to play with a guy like that who's going to. Going to free you up to get the one on ones and really flourish like you deserve?
Uchina Nwosu
Yeah, I mean, I haven't played with him since college. You know, when they traded for him last year, I was unfortunately hurt, man, so I couldn't play with him last year. And so, you know, now being able to play with a guy like that is just so dominant in the middle, such a force in the middle. Like you said, it makes the edge guys, jobs a lot easier in the running game and in the pass game. All the attention is going to him and it allows us up to, you know, do a lot of different things and, you know, he covers up a lot of different mistakes that people make and, you know, he's just like the eraser up there and we're so happy to have him and we're going to need to continue playing like he is going down the stretch.
Richard Sherman
You've been here for Kobe Bryant's like, resurgence, you know what I mean? His adjustment, his draft and then his change to safety now, and he's starting to really turn it up a notch. You know, a big, huge interception against Arizona last week. He had one in Atlanta game as well. He just seems to be playing with a lot more confidence. And then every time you look up, Devin Witherspoon is somewhere, somewhere causing havoc. What do you think you were about to bring to this defense? Because you've obviously been the most consistent pass, the best defensive playmaker before you got hurt coming back in. How excited are you to just get back out there and immediately make an impact in a huge game?
Uchina Nwosu
Yeah, I'm hungry. You know, what, what bigger stage should do with this Sunday Night Football when the world's watching, you know, so, you know, ready to go out there and bring my playmaking skills that I Know, I can bring out there and continue to help this defense win. You know, we're. We're deep on the D line, and just adding the extra value like myself back in that rotation is going to be able to cause havoc for offensive lines and, you know, offensive coaches and, you know, quarterbacks. So I'm just ready to go out there and contribute.
Richard Sherman
It's right on time. It's right on time. Now I'm going to take you back because you just brought up SC and, you know, our whole PAC 12 is gone now. You know, I mean, that's. That's a whole story for a different day. But what's wrong with sc? Because it's disappointing, man, that's some LA kids. Like, I don't, you know. Yeah, yeah, y'all let me down. You know, I know Stanford, we gonna struggle. You know, we have a hard enough time when it was directly ncaa. Now they paying kids. We can't keep nobody but y'all. Y'all supposed to be holding it down.
Uchina Nwosu
Yeah, I'm just as confused as you and the rest of the world, man. I don't know what's going on. They had, I think, cables first year. I think they went like 11 and 3 or something like that. But still was disappointing because, you know, this standards. When you get, you know, guy like that, coach like that, quarterback like that, the college playoffs, you know, at least, you know, and not to see that happen, you know, these last, what, three seasons now, is very disappointing. And I don't know. I don't know. I don't know what's going on over there. Hopefully they can see, you know, get some more players next year in the portal and, you know, try to build from there, but we'll see.
Richard Sherman
It's such a different landscape in college right now, man. Could you imagine playing in that and you getting paid and you get to tell coach, hey, hey. Boys is telling coaches, hey, y'all, didn't. My check didn't clear this week. I ain't practicing today. Y'all let me know when my check clear and I'll be out there. Like, it's just silly.
Uchina Nwosu
Yeah, silly. I totally agree. You know, when we played, it was for the love of the game. You know, we wanted to be able to play on Sundays. You know, we wanted to go out there and make a name for ourselves. But now, you know, kids are. Who's paying me the most money, you know, I'll transfer here because they'll pay me some more money. You know, I'll stay. I'm not going to go to leagues and I'm gonna try to make some more money here, which is fine. I understand that. But at the end of the day, the goal was always to play on Sunday nights.
Richard Sherman
The D lineman from sc, Bear Alexander. Bear Alexander, like it transferred again. They said the boy didn't been to four different high schools in high school, and now he's going on his third different college. I'm like, at some point, like, you gonna have a hard time getting drafted because the team that drafts you gonna be like, you can't. You can't leave. You didn't stay nowhere more than a year. Like, they trust you, can't trust you don't care how talented you are.

Congratulations on your Walter Payton man of the Year nomination. Thank you. You obviously had your. You've had a tremendous impact. Tell me how much, you know, we're giving back to the community and being able to help those that are less fortunate than yourself means to you.
Uchina Nwosu
It means a lot. You know, growing up, I didn't, I didn't really have, you know, those resources or, you know, guys come back and talk to me and give back and do things in the community for me. So I always knew if I was in a position to be able to give back, that's one thing I would do. Whether that's to the local community, whether that's to my high school, whether that's here in Seattle. You know, I've always tried to make it a point to wherever I am, try to help somebody in need, especially the youth. I feel like the next generation is, you know, going to be able to shape this world. So why not start there and just work my way up so anyway, I can give back to the kids, give back to the youth any way possible. That's what I'm about.
Richard Sherman
That's good, man. It's always the best feeling, be able to give back. You know, as a kid, I grew up in a tough neighborhood, and you just, you, you really understand the impact that one person telling you that you matter means, you know, just telling you you matter. Just telling you, like, you got a chance that you're special. And, you know, I had a number of high school coaches that I would attribute that to, that that really, I feel like unlocked my potential. They were the ones that told me, like, man, I see something Special in you, and then you feel like you got to do everything in your power to make them right. So just know that your impact is reaching kids, you know, even the kids you probably have never seen. You know, it's having a tremendous positive impact. Right. So what's the. What's the next thing? I always want to. Want to ask you this. Why 10? I don't know.
Uchina Nwosu
I just want some change, you know, coming from my old team, you know, I was like, you know, let me get a fresh start, you know, new team, new environment. Let me just try something different. I was like, I always wanted. I wanted number seven, but Gino had it. That was my number in high school. So I was like, you know what? 10. 10 sounds pretty cool. I'll take that.
Richard Sherman
Right, right, right, right. Because you're a 10 sack guy. Yeah. Plus, you know, 10 sec. Plus. I don't want to disrespect nobody. That's cool. I thought it was going to be some crazy story. Like, people always ask me, why. Why you pick number 25? And, like, I had some crazy cool story to it, and I was just like, well, when I got drafted, they had 120 number open, and I wasn't wearing 30. I was not about to wear no 30. They gave me 30 to begin with, and then they drafted mark Legree like, two picks later, and they gave him 25. I called Ek so quick, I said, hey, I got drafted higher, right? Yes. Yeah. I said, yeah, give me 25. Give him 30. Walking out there with 30, getting cooked. Nah, no, no offense to everybody that we're at 30, but it's. It's tough out there wearing 30. Just, y'all know, y'all get a few extra targets every game because y'all got 30 on. So what's your expectations for yourself? You know, obviously, we're at a later part of the season, but you coming in with fresher legs, you know, fresh legs. What expectations do you have for yourself at this point of the season? The team. I know, playoff aspirations, you know, winning the division gives you a home game in front of the twelves, and you've come a long way since playing in. What were they calling that stadium now because it was sub hub.
Uchina Nwosu
I think it's still StubHub. Right.
Richard Sherman
Well, nobody playing it no more, so we ain't paying attention. But you go from playing in that stadium to playing in one of the loudest stadiums in sports. How different is that for you? Yeah.
Uchina Nwosu
To answer the first part of your question, man, it's been a long season you know, I've dealt with a lot of adversity over the. Really, the last year. So my main goal is just to make it through the rest of the season healthy, you know, God willing, and just do my best to get back to where I, you know, what I know I could be. And that's play making and making plays on that field, you know, so that's definitely my goal. No matter how it is in the run game, pass game, supporting the teammates, whatever it may be, that's just my number one goal. And, yeah, being able to play in front of these crowds, this crowd is insane. You know, that's really our secret weapon. You know, you've been the best of the best. So just being able to get back in that crowd behind you and then, you know, just feeding off them, to be able to go out there and have fun and make plays, you know, that's what it's all about. And I can't wait for that this Sunday night.
Richard Sherman
Yeah. Oh, it's going to be. They're going to be rocking in there Sunday night. And, you know, as a D lineman, it's always fun because they got to go silent, count everything. So you just got to watch the ball at that point. His ears back. They're gonna be great for that. They're great in playoff games. We've had many games where, you know, the stadium's rocking and shaking and all that, and people are like, you must love that as a defender. I'm like, I mean, sometimes, but you can't talk either. You can't communicate nothing. Nope. And then they'd be like, why did y'all have that bus? It's because I was trying to tell him to switch.
Uchina Nwosu
Yeah.
Richard Sherman
He couldn't hear me. And we looking at each other and they snapped the ball. Yeah. But it's more positive than negative.
Uchina Nwosu
Definitely 100.
Richard Sherman
So I'm. I. I want to know, because I don't. I don't sit in the locker room. I don't sit in the meetings. How is Mike McDonald in these meetings? How is he? Because we had y'all at Thursday night, and it just seemed like he was just so dejected after a San Francisco 49ers loss that Thursday night. And then y'all come into. I come out of the buy, and he is a totally different guy. Such a. Such a turnaround. And it seems like whatever he said to the guys, whatever he did during a buy, and he made some moves roster wise, but it just seems like schematically they're playing better offensively. They're playing better. The offensive line is playing better. You know, a few changes. Obviously, Abraham Lucas brings a different element to that offensive line than they had before. But what, what, what has changed so much?
Uchina Nwosu
Yeah, Mike's just being a great leader, honestly. You know, it's come a long way from, you know, training camp when we first met him to now, you know, we're starting to get more accustomed to him and how his style is and everybody loves it. You know, it's kind of like, it's kind of like Mark's funny, man. He tries to be funny, but it's like kind of cornyish. But we all love it though, because that's just who he is, you know, so it makes him play for him. He said he gets some great half speeches. I ain't gonna lie, man. He knows how to get those guys fired up in the locker room. And he just, it's just like so smart, you know, he just believes in everybody, constantly encourage everybody, shows us, reminds us, you know, what it looks like when we've done it before, you know, he knows how to keep guys positive and keep guys fired up. And he's so smart, coming up with different tactics, way to win. You can see he actually cares and he tries. And all the coach staff put in a lot of effort, you know, so that's all going into it and they made a big change and come in the by season on the, in the bye weekend. And the message has carried on so far.
Richard Sherman
It's, it's carried on and y'all look really good. You got a lot of young talent, a lot of guys stepping up and to get you back at this point of the season is like a whole nother big time free agent signing, you know, mid season. Like you're about to bring an incredible element to this defense. I'm excited to see it. I wonder, I wonder what's been the toughest, like offensive line matchup that you've had in your career. Like the toughest that you've had to deal with. Were you like, after the game you were like, ah, I don't want, I don't want to see this dude again.
Uchina Nwosu
I'll probably say, well, I probably see the toughest matchup I've had in my career. I'll probably say Trent Williams, man, he's, he's a dog. He's tough to beat, man. He's really, he's really smart, athletic and strong. And he just been in the league for so long that he has all those vet moves and stuff. So, you know, it's always a good matchup going up against him because, you know, I know how to get him sometimes and more times than not, he's probably going to win. But I always, you know, give him my best with him and he gives me a good challenge and makes me continue to be a better player, you know, going up against guys like that. So that's probably like my favorite matchup, you know, going on. Looking forward to the drought of the years.
Richard Sherman
Yeah. I mean, he's one of the best to ever play, so I'm not mad at that. That's, that's one of the, he's a behemoth of a man. You hear about all the accolades and to hear from you, it's, it's, it's an incredible challenge. But I've seen you beat him, so that has to feel good, too. I'm just happy you're back, man. I'm happy to see you back on that field after this injury. Happy to. That you're going to make a positive impact on this team and happy to see all the great things you're doing for the community, brother.
Uchina Nwosu
Absolutely. Thank you.
Richard Sherman
Yeah, no problem. No problem. Well, I won't hold you up. I know you got to get more rehab to do and more things to do with your off day. I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to spend time with me and have this conversation. I look forward to seeing you out on that field and we'll have another conversation before you all hit those playoffs.
