And we got another incredible guest receiver for The San Francisco 49ers. Kendrick born my boy, KB.
Kendrick Bourne
What's up, Sharon?
Richard Sherman
What up, baby?
Kendrick Bourne
Having me, man.
Richard Sherman
Man, you had a fun year. You had. You got. You got your bonus. You hit that final look, got your chippers. What does the future hold for young kb? You coming back?
Kendrick Bourne
I'm trying to come back, talk to Kyle, man. You know, Kyle got a good relationship with him, man. We had a good exit meeting, man. So, you know, I'm trying to make it happen, man. That's always the goal. San Francisco is home, man. And so coming back, having a good year, like you said, was powerful. So I'm trying to run it back. Money talk, but that's just definitely home. So that's holding a special place in my heart.
Richard Sherman
Yes, money definitely talks, but it was just. It just was so real when you came back and how everybody received you. You put that 84 on and it just looked right.
Kendrick Bourne
It just was right back to how it felt. So, man, I appreciate Kyle John, and I love how I left on a good note. Left with a good relationship. That's powerful, man. And any players out there, don't leave and go on Twitter down your last team. Never know when you might need to come back. So kind of left on that note, and it was good for me.
Richard Sherman
Right. Right. Don't speed past the facility. All right. VR all right. About that. But talk to me about this substation thing because they making such a big deal about this. And I'm like, bro, nobody, how has this been around this long? And nobody ever said anything. And that was the biggest.
Kendrick Bourne
So I'm running off with a story. You've been on that grass, you know when it turned brown.
Richard Sherman
It does.
Kendrick Bourne
It turned brown at the end of the year.
Richard Sherman
It does.
Kendrick Bourne
But the soccer field over there, the little girl soccer field, it stayed green all year, low key. I just started driving past noticing, so I don't know, Jay, I just trolling, but it be brown. I'm like, it do be brown. Why the grass brown? It's not too rainy in San Fran. It ain't too hot. It should really be green, right?
Richard Sherman
You not a gardener, but I'm telling you.
Kendrick Bourne
So I'm a conspiracy theorist, bruh. But it's just crazy, man. It's too many injuries, so it.
Richard Sherman
What's crazy?
Kendrick Bourne
John said he gonna look into it.
Richard Sherman
What's crazy is the team has been trying to acquire that field for the longest, and then they're acting like they can't give the team that field because of the soccer. And that's a story for a different.
Kendrick Bourne
I didn't know that.
Richard Sherman
Oh, they've been trying to get it. It was a huge fight. They've been trying to acquire that land, and maybe things would be different if they were over there, but, you know, so the city of Santa Clara, you know, they could have EAS Remedied this.
Kendrick Bourne
We got that cheese.
Richard Sherman
Look, we can build a whole nother soccer field. I promise you. I promise you. We can build another soccer field for him that's not right next to an NFL stadium. But tell me about this matchup. You obviously played against the Seattle Seahawks and you played for the New England Patriots. What Mike Vrabel has done for this team has been incredible. What Mike McDonald has done for this team has been incredible. How do you see this matchup going?
Kendrick Bourne
I think it's going to be a defensive game, man. Shout out to my guys in New England, man. You know, them is all my guys went to war with those guys, so I'm happy that they get to experience it. Just telling them to soak it all in, man. Enjoy it. And then I got my guy Cooper cup over there, so I'm kind of rooting for both sides. But both defenses, man, are phenomenal, man. Like me, experience and going against New England and practice and stuff. They know what they're doing. Braves got the mindset, the mentality, right? McDonald got them right from me playing against them. Them boys was jumping routes, bro. Tariq, Woolen and Witherspoon, I'm like, hey, I'm taking six steps. How you know you count my step? I'm like, nah, bro. Nah, bro. And so they just on that. That they in sync right now with the D line. They're confident. You know, some DBs gonna just sit there like, all right, let them break and then go, nah. Tariq and them, they antsy and so. And New England got those player makers, too. Marcus Jones, gonzo. So it's going to be a defensive matchup, and both offenses going to be locked in, but I think whoever makes the most plays on defense comes on top.
Richard Sherman
It's been crazy to watch the run that New England's on and the defenses they've had to play against. I mean, they've played against Houston.
Jacob Goldstein or Robert Smith
Who.
Richard Sherman
And now, now, now Greg Maiden got taken a beating. I'm telling you, boy, they won these games. They got it done. And then they played against Denver, took a beating, but they got it done.
Kendrick Bourne
And it's just one of those years, you know, you never know the ball tipping your way. More injuries and they having a good year. Everything is kind of falling their way not to. Not to take credit from them, but a lot of people doubting them with like they schedule. But then when you say they get to the playoffs, Houston ain't no punk. We struggled against them in San Fran.
Richard Sherman
They.
Kendrick Bourne
They kept us off the field. So just them holding it down against Denver too. Like you said, it shows that they're in the right position. But Josh McDaniels, Drake Vrabel, the culture they're building, they kind of bringing it back. Patriots kind of back. People mad.
Richard Sherman
Yeah, they super mad. But it's. It's the things that, that people don't appreciate about Rabel and the Patriots that they've done well for so many years. They rarely make mistakes in terms of in game decision making. Like when it, when it's time to take the points, the points is taken. When it's a third down and they should go for a fourth down, they should go for it. It's gone for it. You rarely go into those games and you're like second guessing what they did later on. You're like, they probably. They probably played it exactly how it should have played.
Kendrick Bourne
Nothing unorthodox.
Richard Sherman
Right?
Kendrick Bourne
You know, bro. And so. And what they. And they take the risk at the right time. What you say, like the fourth and two, fourth and one, it, like, it makes sense. So. I love Josh, man. You know, I was with Josh, so just seeing him get back to who he is and in the same place he was his. I think it's his third tenor. And so, man, I like people asking me today, like, do you wish he was in it? Heck, yeah, I wish I was. Of course I'd be lying if I wasn't. But it's just situations happen. God put me on a different path, but I'm happy for those guys, man. And it, it's just dope to see from a distance. And I know that I played in the Super Bowl. We've experienced together, man, which was dope. And so just the experience in itself is special for those guys.
Richard Sherman
Yeah, it's it was fantastic. And. And even then for Josh, I mean, he's still getting paid from the Raiders, so, I mean, he. He ain't doing bad at all. The Raiders paying him to coach of the Super Bowl.
Kendrick Bourne
Right now I'm gonna get a head coaching job again. Fired on purpose.
Richard Sherman
No jiffy that day, all this. But talk to me about your clothing, man. We got your T shirt up here. What we got going with.
Kendrick Bourne
We got born blessed, man. Hey, Born blessed. Talks about, man, your purpose, man, you here for a reason. Everybody born for a reason. Everybody got a purpose in life, but you ain't gonna just find it. God going to show you. And when you make it there, you figure out why you living. You born blessed, man.
Richard Sherman
Boy, well, I'll tell you what. This IC seems like you're born blessed. I tell you what.
Kendrick Bourne
Amazon Jewelers.
Richard Sherman
Amazon Jewelers. Bring the diamond checkup over here now.
Kendrick Bourne
Don't bring it over.
Richard Sherman
Don't bring it. They say.
Kendrick Bourne
They say bring it.
Richard Sherman
Don't bring it. Don't bring it. Don't bring it. Oh, man, it's so great to see the growth and maturity that you've shown at this point in your career. Obviously, I saw you as a younger man, young boy, and I heard a lot about you from Junior Adams, who coached at Easter. You know, Junebug in Dallas now. Yes.
Kendrick Bourne
Yeah, he went Pickens and them Rice.
Richard Sherman
He and boy balling, getting them right. And he said his experiences with you and Cub helped him get them right because dealing with y' all was a lot different. Different. Different energies.
Kendrick Bourne
Nah, that's fire. That's fire.
Richard Sherman
Oh, go ahead, go ahead. How does it feel coming from Eastern and everything you experienced there to this point in your career, that journey that you've been through and the growth that you've shown?
Kendrick Bourne
Yeah, man, like, I was talking about Coop, man, that's my guy, man. Us being connected for so long. I always talk about, you know, God put him in my path for a reason. He was grinding when he was there, doing the right things. And I didn't understand it at first. I was just like, man, he getting more passes than me. Man, he. He ballin more than me. But as I gotten older, now, being around him, in the league, in our careers, it's like God was showing me a long time ago how to carry myself, how to train, how to think, how to operate. And that's special. But it all led to me and my career, you know, and understanding once I got to the league. And when you say I was young, I got to the league. I was blowing cheese and having fun. And you mature. As you get older, you start to realize, man, I don't need everything. I don't need every. I got a lot of chains, don't get me wrong. But I've gotten to a point where I can do a little bit now, you know, you buy certain things, you invest, right? You do good with your finances. You can move different. So I've grown in so many spaces through football. That's why I love the game, man, because it gives you so many ventures in life that if you do it right, you know what I'm saying? You can do this for a long time in life, no question.
Richard Sherman
And you're uso talk about that and what that means to you and just being able to inspire that community.
Kendrick Bourne
Bro, my culture. Culture is amazing. Look, I got Samoa on my chain. I'm promoting my guys. But the love my Samoan culture gives and how we love people is powerful, man. And I always. I keep that in my heart. Show love, you know what I'm saying? Be caring, help people. My family is a different. Look, I gotta. I can't hinder them. I was hindering them. How helping. But it's a culture that I'm connected to and I love, and it's part of my brand, too. So I got a polycross on my thing, and it's just about keeping what's connected real.
Richard Sherman
Well, I appreciate you joining me, kb. As always, man. It's always love, brother.
Kendrick Bourne
Thanks, Sharon. Appreciate you, man.
Richard Sherman
Thanks for having me, bro.

On June 11, 1998, a deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department went missing. It's an all out manhunt for John Ajay. Every search and rescue team in LA county has been called in to help. Within days, tips started flooding into the Sheriff's department. The rumor around the drug scene was that a deputy was taken care of. Is this the story of a man who just got lost in the desert? Or of a cover up inside the nation's largest sheriff's department?
Stugatz
A homicide captain saying, detective, do not find out if this guy's guilty or innocent.
Richard Sherman
Who does that?
Narrator/Podcast Host
Valley of Shadows, a new series from Pushkin Industries about crime and corruption in California's high desert. Do you have any advice for us while looking into this disappearance?
Kendrick Bourne
I wouldn't do it alone.

Jacob Goldstein or Robert Smith
The Volkswagen Beetle started out as Hitler's dream car. It wound up as a beloved hippie icon and the best selling car of all time. How did that happen. I'm Jacob Goldstein. And I'm Robert Smith. On business history, we tell the surprising stories behind the inventions and entrepreneurs that shaped our economy. And the story of the Beatle is truly surprising. It has so much in it. It has Nazis. It has the German economic miracle. And it features one of the most famous ads of all time, an ad that really redefined what advertising was in the United States. The calculation was that there was some number of Americans who were ready for something different, who were ready for something that was counter to the culture, if you will. Perfect timing in this decade of the 1960s. Listen to Business History on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts and watch episodes on YouTube.
Richard Sherman
Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast, and we have an incredible guest today, one of the best corners in the National Football League, Denzel Ward. Appreciate you joining me, brother.
Denzel Ward
Appreciate you, man. Appreciate you having me.
Richard Sherman
How are you feeling about this Super Bowl? This looks like a great matchup. The Patriots have gone through some of the best defenses in the league to get here, and obviously the Seahawks have one of the best defenses in the league. What do you think the issues are going to be for both teams going in?
Denzel Ward
Yeah, I think, like you said, it's going to be a great matchup. You know, I got a lot of respect for Coach Vrabel and his team and what he's been able to do in his first year being in New England. But for me personally, if I had to pick, I think I got Seattle. I'm not just saying that, you know, because you on your show right now. But, no, I think I got Seattle taking it. I know they got that Buckeye. Jackson, Jackson. And, man, them boys been balling and doing their thing, so I see them taking it.
Richard Sherman
Boy, y'.
Kendrick Bourne
All.
Richard Sherman
Y' all Buckeyes put the receivers in the league now, don't y'?
Denzel Ward
All? We do.
Richard Sherman
Yeah. Y' all put some receivers in the league. Y' all didn't put some great corners in the league. Talk about being a corner in this league. You. You've been one of the top corners. We talked about that for a long time. And do you ever find yourself watching other corners? Stingley, Certain, Gonzalez, you know these guys? Because obviously, when I was playing, it was Revis, it was Pat P. It was myself, Slay was. It was in the league playing well, Gilly. But you don't. You know, it's a friendly rivalry. It's. Hey, I watch, I see what you're doing, and I go try to strap and Put up some numbers as well.
Denzel Ward
Yeah, no, it's definitely like that. Like I'm friends with all those guys. But during the season, like you said, it's a competition. Like I'm looking like, okay, what they do this week? You know, they got Jamar Chase, they got whatever. See what they, what was they stat line against them, how many PBUS interceptions and what type of game did they have? I'm like, I got. Okay, I got to go out and do my thing this next week and top that, you know, just trying to stay a step ahead and just competing like from a distance, you know. So I'm definitely keeping eyes on everybody and checking out they game, what they good at and try to apply it to my game a little bit. But yeah, it's just a friendly competition.
Richard Sherman
Yeah, that's exactly how I felt. That's exactly, bro. It was to the point where before games sometimes I had a statue. Like he got two today. Like, oh, right, and I'm going out there hunting. Exactly. But it's a friendly competition. You know, we would trade notes sometimes. But also as a corner trying to evolve your game, you learn so much about yourself. You watch your tape, you know the things you do well, you know the things you don't do well. That's a, that's being an honest player. And the only way you can elevate is being able to see what you do well, improve your game, work on your weaknesses. But sometimes you see something in somebody else's game. I saw something in Aqib Talib's game, his off coverage. He played with like a real short stagger and he would just quick shuffle. His off was just a quick shuffle. He didn't pedal, he just quick, quick shuffle. And then if it was quick game, he's transitioning out and if it was, if it was, he would usually flip his hips and get himself into a transition. I was like, I think I could play it like that. And it helped my off so much because everybody running these condensed formations, do you ever find yourself and even practice squad dudes sometimes, if they had something in their bag that I wanted, I.
Denzel Ward
Gotta be like, hey, exactly.
Richard Sherman
I need that.
Denzel Ward
Yeah, I think that's the biggest thing. Like it don't just have to be from the top guys that you getting things that add to your game from. Like even in practice, like seeing how guys run routes or, or seeing what DBs do in practice and stuff like that. You can take stuff from they game. So it's really just staying open minded to everybody and into the game. You know?
Richard Sherman
Yeah, I agree. I agree. That's the way you keep evolving and staying at the top of your game. Talk about Todd Monkin. You guys just hired Todd Monkin. He was a coordinator for your rivals for a while. Obviously, Jim Schwartz is still under contract. But talk about the good things that you've heard about him and have you had a chance to go. Go meet him yet?
Denzel Ward
Yeah, I haven't got a chance to meet him yet. He did text me yesterday. I wanted to reach out to him. I had the Pro bowl game, though, so I kind of. I got to get back to him still. But I heard a lot of great things about him, like picked up the Baltimore's offense. I heard great things. Raising Lamar Jackson's game and Derrick Henry and just having a dynamic offense. So I'm hoping he could bring that to Cleveland. You know, we need it. Need an amazing offense. And, you know, I'm hoping they saying he the guy to do it, so we go find out.
Richard Sherman
Obviously, you're hoping to bring Jim Schwartz back. He's been such a fantastic coordinator. You guys have been a top five, top three defense for majority of your career. Talk about his scheme and what he's meant to you.
Denzel Ward
Man, I can't say enough great things about Coach Schwartz. I feel he's elevated my game like I talked about with Monken and to Lamar. I feel like that Schwartz to. To me and a lot of guys on the defense and on the team. Schwartz, like I said, elevated my game. Just his scheme is great. I feel he always calling a perfect call, putting us in the right position to make a play. So I'm hoping we could keep him on the team and, you know, he'll go nowhere else.
Richard Sherman
You got a great young middle linebacker. How have you seen him evolve throughout this season?
Denzel Ward
I think Schlesinger, he came in as a veteran, like a veteran as a rookie. So it's been exciting to see him grow. Just a great player who should win. Defensive player, rookie defensive player of the year, I believe, along with Miles Garrett winning defensive player of the year. But it's just a great player, man. We gonna need him. A good young core talent that we got. We're gonna need him for the long run.
Richard Sherman
It ain't many times you get a defensive player of the year candidate and a rookie defensive. I mean, defensive rookie of the year candidate on the same defense, and y' all not win at least, you know, but we ain't gonna go down that road. But y', all, you lost your running mate, too, and people don't understand the relationship that corn, especially the corner that plays opposite of a great corner like yourself, they get a lot of attention. They get a lot more attention than normal. You lose Newsom, but you get Tyson Campbell. How was that for you during the season?
Denzel Ward
Honestly, it was tough at first. Like Greg Newson, like, that's my brother. Like, you know, we got real close over the time that he came into the league and like I said, he getting married this all season, go, go to his wedding and everything and they trade him. So it hurt me. But you know, that's the NFL and that's what happened. But Tyson, he a great fit for the team, came in locked in, played man to man and he's just a great dude to be around. So I think it was a good trade. You know, Greg doing well for Jacksonville and Tyson doing well and me and Tyson becoming closer and closer. But I think he a great fit for the team though.
Richard Sherman
I agree, I agree with that. So what's Cleveland sometimes gets a bad rap and I want to give you a chance today to tell people something they don't know about Cleveland. Some positives, you know, you gotta give Cleveland some love today. We're gonna give Cleveland a little love, right?
Denzel Ward
You know, hey, LeBron from Cleveland. So that's all, that's all you gotta say, LeBron from Cleveland. So that's all you need to know. But the Browns, man, we about to, we about to bring it, pick it back up, pick it back up this season, hopefully make the playoffs. And yeah, we trying to win some games and bring some winning back to the city.
Richard Sherman
I believe that, I believe that Shador Sanders was named to the Pro bowl this year. That was, that was a little different. They said, they said y' all had two quarter Pro bowl quarterbacks in flack on Shador. So. But talk about him and the growth that you've seen from him, obviously as a corner, you see it up close and personal. We understand these quarterbacks, we understand what they're seeing and the way they, they kind of try to diagnose and dissect these defenses. Did you see the growth that you expected from him this season?
Denzel Ward
Yeah, it's been. Well, I mean, like I said, he is just a rookie. He got all the quality confidence in the world. I think you need that quarterback position and I think he's going to continue to develop and grow into a great player. And he did well. He did well. He made some mistakes, but I mean, that's expected for a rookie. But just his growth and his willingness to want to Learn and get better. I think it's going to go a long way for him.
Richard Sherman
Did you ever find yourself having conversations with him? You know, I think they're usually quarterbacks in corners. Sometimes quarterbacks, receivers, receivers in corners have those conversations. What did you see here? Especially great players like yourself. Did you. Did you find yourself going up to him and like, hey, I saw you do this. I saw you giving away this tail. Or are you trying to let him learn the hard way?
Denzel Ward
Yeah, I'm really letting him learn the hard way. You know, I definitely stay in his ear, though. But the. Most of the conversation is just trash talk. Like, you know, I'm about to pick you up all day and practice today, and, you know, it's mostly just a trash talk, but I definitely try to stay in his ear and, you know, I'm always here for him whenever he needs some advice about something or if I got a question, you know, I go ask him and see what he saw.
Richard Sherman
You've been in the league long enough to ask you this question. How. How much different is the league than you thought it was going to be when you were a kid growing up and watching it versus you playing in it and getting to be an elite player?
Denzel Ward
Yeah, that's a great question. I think when I, growing up watching it, I thought like, oh, man, like, the NFL is just like, I don't know, like a juggernaut. Like, guys is just unbeatable and, you know, you just. The guys are the top of the top. But once I actually got to the NFL and like, I'm like, okay, I could play with these guys. Like, guys are beatable. You know, it's going to be good players. Like you said, it's going to be great players. But guys could be beaten on any given day.
Richard Sherman
It still is juggernaut. You just happen to be a juggernaut.
Narrator/Podcast Host
You.
Richard Sherman
You sit there, you look at it like, oh, man, these, these guys can. Can be played with, but it's because you're one of the top athletes in the world. But that was the thing when I came in, it was so much different than I expected. It was. Once you get here and you have the confidence to. To understand you belong here and you can be dominant, you can play at a high level, then it, it. It changes the game for exactly. You know, how I approach it is I'm approaching human beings. I'm approaching schemes. I'm studying a scheme, seeing, hey, this offense coordinator likes to do it. This. In this situation, I have yet to see a receiver that calls his own plays. So from that perspective, I'm like, hey, you might run 4, 2, 4, 3. You may jump out of the gym and all that, but if he say, you running a curl, better run that curl.
Denzel Ward
Exactly. You know, that's where the ball gonna be.
Richard Sherman
That's where the ball gonna be. We, we in San Francisco a couple times we would play and we'd be in practice and a receiver would just. But he just run the wrong route. Because I've run the route for him. If it's a big, I'm already running there. If it's curl, I'm already breaking and they make up routes. And Kyle used to go off. That used to be. That's the most fun I have, watching him go off on his receiver. Like, you can't just make stuff up because I know to play.
Denzel Ward
Exactly. You can't change the router.
Richard Sherman
No, you can't. And once I knew that, it changed the way I played this game. And I think that's what helped me play at a different level. What do you think gives you the advantage that you have to play at the level you have for so long?
Denzel Ward
I think one consistency. Just staying consistent in my workouts, my routine. Like I found a great routine coming into the NFL and just really just being able to stick. I know it works for me, but it don't work for me and just sticking to that, you know, not getting complacent and any. Anything that goes on and just continue to stick to it. And yeah, I would say that's the biggest thing for me.
Richard Sherman
What, what have you changed about your off season routine as you gotten older? And I don't mean older like that, but just as you've matured in this league and really have an understanding of what you need and what you don't need. Is it spending more time with family, Is it working out more? Is it the training facility? Is it the diet? What is it?
Denzel Ward
Yeah, that's a good question. I think like, initially what I learned, like going into, like soon as the season's over with, is really taking that break. Like, you know, I don't need to be football every single day, you know, so really just kind of taking a break and, and clearing my mind and then once I do get back to it, still staying in shape, like working out and getting those lifts in and stuff like that. But just finding that routine, I think is the biggest thing for me. I got a routine that I feel worse than. Like I said, diet. Whether it's the diet workouts and then just sticking to that year in and year out, you know, I don't really change too much in it, and I feel it helps me out every year.
Richard Sherman
Yeah. Creatures of habit. We definitely. Creatures of habit. I think that was the biggest thing for me because when you're young and you want to. As soon as the season's over, you're like, man, I want to get back to working out and I want to get back to lifting and get back on the field. And then you get to the season and your body hurting, you sore and you having hamstring and calf issues and training camp, and you're like, you didn't give your body a big enough break after the season to heal up, to recover, and to do all the things you necessary. So it's great that you found that routine. What's your goals in the future, outside of, obviously, the team goals, super bowl and playoffs? What are your personal goals?
Denzel Ward
Personal goals? I would say defensive player of the year, definitely. Keep stacking on the Pro Bowls, super bowl. And just really like my main goal every year is just to be that guy at the corner position. Like, they need me to go out there and be a dominant number one corner, take away my side of the field, and that's my goal, to go out there, don't give them no catches, make plays, and just be that guy for the team, you know, somebody that could be counted on, you dang sure counted on right now.
Richard Sherman
And when you're that guy, your pockets get counted on. So I'm happy to see you getting what you deserve and continue to play at a high level. Let me know if you got any questions for me. I don't want to hold up your whole day.
Denzel Ward
Yeah, no, for sure. No, I definitely got questions here. With a great hall of Fame player, great talent. So I'll say, what separated you or what allowed you to play at such an elite level throughout your years in the NFL?
Richard Sherman
I think it was the mental side of it. I think understanding the coordinators, understanding situational football. When I trained, I tried to make sure I kept it mental. Even when I'm training, even when I'm fatigued, even when I'm working my body and my body's breaking down and we're running gassers. I'm letting my brain function because a lot of times you're in those situations in the game, that's when it's asked of you. It's not when you comfortable and you feeling good and you're doing all this. It's when you're dead tired, your shoulder kind of hurt because you Just made a tackle, you're a little bit dazed and you're like, it's third and five. Can I remember the concept that they run on third and five? Can I remember the concept they run it on third and eight out of a bunch? Like, hey, when the, when the receiver go in motion and come back, is it that double follow? Is it that drive? Is it drive basic? Is it spot 7? What is the route concept? And I would challenge myself when I'm super fatigued to be able to diagnose and really digest that information. And it helped in a lot of those games because when you get in those big games, it's a two minute drive. You see in Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, you seeing these dudes and you've got to process it. It can't. And that's the most uncomfortable time. And I think that's the hardest thing for guys, even when they're great in the classroom and even when they can go and walk through and diagnose it and you figured it out in practice, can you do it in that game? Yeah, when, when the lights as bright as she's tired, you hurting and be out there and go up and make the play. It's something to be able to see it. And hey, I know it's curl, I know it's dig and do this, but can you break and then when the ball coming, can I get the booking?
Denzel Ward
So that's what I want to ask you too. So what makes you comfortable in those high tense situations? So you're going against Tom Brady like two minutes on the clock, you know, tie game. Like what makes you comfortable in those high pressure situations?
Richard Sherman
It was something that Pete Carroll really preached to us through throughout our time. Everything is a championship game. Every, like if you came to our practices, it'll make a lot more sense.
Jacob Goldstein or Robert Smith
Yeah.
Richard Sherman
Because our practices were like games like we out there like trying to kill each other. We out there full speed guy attacking like. So when you get in the game, it's easier than practice because they're not matching the intensity. A lot of times every now and then they are, but for the most part, like we never turn off.
Denzel Ward
Yeah.
Richard Sherman
So that's what makes it tough in off season when it's time to turn, turn it down. They'd be like, you know, aren't they were turned down for what? Yeah, exactly. Like we, we running and hitting everything moving so just, just making sure that we took everything that serious and, and the guys around, I would say held that standard. Like you got Bobby Wagner, you got Earl Thomas, you got Cam Chancer, you got Mike Bennett, you got real.
Denzel Ward
Some boys.
Richard Sherman
We had some boys. So the standard is the standard all the time. And when you, when you have that, you consistently are getting pushed every day. Like we, if y', all don't, if y' all want the offense to move the ball, don't put them out here with us. Like, if y. It's the offseason. You want, you want us to not go after the ball, you want us to not, then don't put them out here and don't put us out here. Exactly. Like, sure, they going to find you. They're going to take your draft picks. If you put that ball up, we going for it, no doubt. And that's. You know what I mean? It's just kind of guys, we work real.
Denzel Ward
That's real. I appreciate that, man.
Richard Sherman
Yes, sir. It was great having you, man. I appreciate you. I appreciate you taking the time to be on here with me. I got a lot of respect for your game and I want to keep in contact.
Denzel Ward
Likewise, man. Appreciate it. Yes, sir.

Jacob Goldstein or Robert Smith
The Volkswagen Beetle started out as Hitler's dream car. It wound up as a beloved hippie icon and the best selling car of all time. How did that happen? I'm Jacob Goldstein. And I'm Robert Smith. On business history, we tell the surprising stories behind the inventions and entrepreneurs that shaped our economy. And the story of the Beetle is truly surprising. It has so much in it. It has Nazis. It has the German economic miracle. Features one of the most famous ads of all time. An ad that really redefined what advertising was in the United States. The calculation was that there was some number of Americans who were ready for something different, who were ready for something that was counter to the culture, if you will. Perfect timing in this decade of the 1960s. Listen to Business History on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts and watch episodes on YouTube.

You can accomplish a lot in a decade. You could earn a bachelor's degree and a master's degree back to back. You could compete in two separate consecutive Olympic games. Well, we made my favorite murder. It's been 10 years of true crime, 10 years of conversation, and 100 years of swearing. Here's the thing, everyone, politeness. Go yourself as a when someone sneezes. From now on, we have something for everyone. Advice, support, and a safe space for your feelings. This is terrible. Triflers need not apply. Stay out of the forest. You're in a cult. Call your dad. Don't worry, it gets worse. Toxic masculinity ruins the party again. I said, dad, what the hell? What are we, what are we going to do? And he goes, I don't. What the hell? I don't know. We're going to sally forth. Sally. We're going to sally forth. You guys stay sexy. Don't get murdered. Elvis, do you want a cookie?
Richard Sherman
A cookie?
Narrator/Podcast Host
Listen to my favorite murder on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Goodbye.
Richard Sherman
Talk me through your journey with them. It's been an incredible deal. You know, it looks like you've had a tremendous amount of success, gotten better every year, been really dominant on the field. But tell me how you see things going.
Romeo Dobbs
I thought my growth internally was the biggest thing for me. I know because I know football, that's another world. I know that's the main thing. But I just want to say, yeah, those four years outside of football, I thought just my growth as a human also aligned with just some of my football play, you know what I mean? And yeah, man, I love the organization. I love how they, how they're structured. I love the process on how they go about things. And ultimately if you just go down the line of who's been there, like it shows that they give opportunities for the players not only to grow in the football world, but just as a person as well, man. And you know I appreciate Green Bay dearly and yeah, bro, I mean I love the organization, man.
Richard Sherman
You, you've played fantastic and, and you, you never know how other places are because you know your experience is only the team you played for and you got drafted to Green Bay. How different was that? Because from the outside looking in, I've only played there a few times. We've gone there with Thursday Night Football, but it looks like such a close knit community, such a great fan base, obviously such a historic team. But what's your been your experience as a player?
Romeo Dobbs
I thought just that's a great question, man. I think it just. I feel like everything was so on time. Just how everything played out throughout my years. Like, it wasn't like I was a guy that came in and had a blazing season, you know what I'm saying? Like, every year it was something, you know what I'm saying? Playing ball and, you know, again, just. And in the situation alone, like, especially this year specifically, it gave me an opportunity to actually, I wouldn't say I will be in a leader, you know, because again, our team was so young where there was no guy that was in year seven, year eight, that can literally show us the ropes, where in this case, we were growing as a unit. And I've emphasized that, I want to say, going into my second year being under Matt LaFleur, you know what I mean?
Richard Sherman
So y'. All. Y', all, Matt LaFleur, and I guess your entire team, your entire, at least offensive, have. Have preached this. You know, everybody eats kind of what Buffalo says. But you guys have said the same thing. Like, you guys have a really great receiver receiving group. You know, Christian Watson, you, Matthew Golden, Reed. So many guys that, you know at any given time can just go off and take the game over. But. But in some capacities, I know, you know, just being honest and then I've said this a few times, but I know how receivers are. And mentally, everybody feels they're the guy. And when. When the ball spreads around like that, there could be a little bit of frustration and divisiveness. But your group hasn't. It doesn't seem like, at least from the outside looking in, you guys haven't dealt with that. You guys have been really unselfish, really supportive of one another. And talk me through that, how that receiver room is so tight.
Romeo Dobbs
Like you said, man, just supporting one another, bro. And again, like, when, again you get in the game and, you know, Jay didn't take over, I'm taking pride in my blocking, you know what I'm saying? Like, that's just what it. That's just what it was.
Richard Sherman
You know what I mean?
Romeo Dobbs
And ultimately, I mean, just being around them, it was amazing. And like I said before, the biggest reason for it, it was just our growth, bro. And I preached that all year long, man.
Richard Sherman
But when it comes down to this time, when you finally become a free agent, it leads to that question, can you be a true number one receiver in the National Football League? And I think teams are going to want that question answered. Obviously, your play answers it, but the opportunities are limited for them to see that what do you have to say to those teams?
Romeo Dobbs
I mean, I believe I could be a number one guy. That's a no brainer. But it's just, I mean, yeah, I don't really got nothing.
Richard Sherman
No, but on the field, you have been fantastic. You're an incredible deep ball runner. You're an incredible route runner. When the ball's in the air, you're, you're, you're a great guy. You win a lot of those matchups. Talk about what you could do with the amount of opportunity some of these receivers get, because some of these receivers are getting 150 targets again. I mean, a year, it's like, you give me 150 targets is I'm going crazy.
Romeo Dobbs
Yes, yes. That's any, that's any receiver. You know what I'm saying? And I thought again, just being under this system, I did a fantastic job just making the most of my opportunity, of what I was given, being there. Because again, man, everybody in that room can go at any moment, bro.
Richard Sherman
So no question. So what, what, what would you want for the future? Obviously, you've been with Green Bay your entire career. Would you want to stay there? Have those conversations happen? Have you started to walk down the avenue or are you just letting your agent handle everything?
Romeo Dobbs
Yeah, I'm gonna let my agent handle everything because again, you know, I'm new to this. I do have, again, I have some experience under my belt, but I don't want to do too much. I'm gonna let him do his job. He's amazing at what he does. And yeah, man, I'm gonna just leave everything unknown because it's a lot in there right now.
Richard Sherman
Well, let's talk through this season because you guys came in. I thought you guys were amongst the super bowl favorites coming into the year. You got a, you got Jordan Love, and he's been incredible. He's been a. Talk about him as a teammate and how he's helped elevate your game and the guys around him in the growth that you've seen.
Romeo Dobbs
Yeah, I love this, bro. Yeah. Yeah. Because, I mean, I've been around Jordan. I mean, I was around him obviously when Aaron was there my rookie year before he took off or whatever, whatnot. But I just thought his growth just as a player and a system, as a human, I just think it's amazing to see because not only is he the same person, but just some of the traits that he's been able to add on amongst himself. I just thought it was really, I thought it was really great to see, man, I thought.
Richard Sherman
I thought in that playoff game against Chicago, that might have been his best game of the season. I thought he executed the offense really well. What do you feel like went wrong in that game? I felt like you guys were in complete, complete control. We had the game. So you guys ran the ball well with Josh Jacobs early on. You guys freaking were controlling that. It looks like he was unstoppable in that game. You guys passed the ball efficiently, and then things in the second half just kind of fell apart. What did you see?
Denzel Ward
I don't.
Romeo Dobbs
I, you know, and I still question it, but ultimately, there's a winner, there's a loser. Clearly, the winner had the better game plan. And again, I'm just being on the bright side of things. Obviously, losing in the league is not it. And, yeah, it just gives me something to learn from, to grow from, and obviously just be better moving forward.
Richard Sherman
Oh, yeah, you talk about you're talking to somebody who know heartbreak from loss. Now you're talking to somebody who know whose heart's been broken. So, believe you me, I know how much it hurts to lose in those playoffs, but you guys just played such a. Had such a great, great offensive season. You played such a great game that way. And I just. I really admire how you guys support one another, because in a league, that can be incredibly individual and selfish. You guys show an unselfishness in that room that's un. That's uncommon. Yes.
Romeo Dobbs
Yeah, man.
Richard Sherman
So talk to me about Leflore and how great of a coach he is.
Romeo Dobbs
Oh, man, I. I love. I love Leflore, man. You know, now that.
Kendrick Bourne
Man.
Romeo Dobbs
Yeah, I'm taking my time with this one, bro. Great offensive mind, and he's a huge part of, you know, I am where I am now just in terms of just my football knowledge and just understanding the game, understanding the situations. I give. I give him a ton of credit for that, bro. I just think, you know, he's very upfront, just honest and very understanding. You know what I mean?
Richard Sherman
Yeah. I mean, the system that he runs, a lot of teams run, you know, some version of that system, so it's easy to see how you could fit in other places, because so many of these teams have really tried to pattern their offensive scheme behind Kim McVeigh Shanahan, you know, which is a really cool scheme, which gives you a lot of opportunities in my mind, but, you know, we're not going to go too far down that line. I ain't going here, but I appreciate you. You got anything for me?
Romeo Dobbs
I appreciate you, man. You know. Glad to meet you in person, you know what I'm saying? Amazing ball. Thank you.
Richard Sherman
No problem at all. Well, I appreciate you joining me, brother.
Romeo Dobbs
