G
Tomino and Rich do it. Yo.
F
Week before Thanksgiving, you got some extra games. You got a Black Friday game. So hey, this is your over promised.
G
Yeah. Thankful for 70 kick ass episodes of this show. Episode 70. Thankful for this guy right here. Way to go, dunce boy. Cavino and Rich, this is our bonus pod again. We're on two to four Monday through Friday right here on Fox Sports Radio. Five to seven on the east Coast. And this is the stuff we didn't have time for. And on this very special day, Rich, we celebrate.
F
There he is.
G
48 years of Rocky Balboa. But we're also going to talk about falling short of milestones. James Harden's in the news. Plus your pick for week 12 tonight. And let's get into it, man.
F
Do you know how old Rocky is in perspective? When you really think about when we were little kids, when you were just a little boy. Back to the future. Went back to the 50s. That felt forever ago.
G
Yeah.
F
When you watched the wizard of oz, that was 1939. So if you were a kid in the 80s, that was 50 years ago. In two years. This right here, 50 years ago.
G
50 years old. But it's 48 today. Debuted today in 1976, winning the Academy Award, putting Sylvester Stallone absolutely on the map as the guy didn't have to.
F
Sell his dog buckets.
G
Yeah. To sell bookers. That means like Cuff and Link must be at least 50, 60 years old at this point. That's crazy. He still has those turtles. That's a fun fact, but it's a legendary movie. It's a love story, an underdog story. One of our favorite movies of all time. Absolutely.
F
I love this. And you know what?
G
I know it moves slower from today's perspective now, but I watched it recently with my daughter and she loved it. Still holds up. Yeah, still holds up. Stood the test of time. It's a classic. And it got us thinking with Sly in the news recently. Yo, I think the whole Tyson fight was a fix. Absolutely. He deserves an Academy Award Oscar winning performance. Iron Mike. Absolutely. He implied that he deserved an Academy Award for his performance. The Sly in the news. And the anniversary today. How do you rank the Rockies? It's a forever debate.
F
This is very telling. I think you'll learn a lot about someone based on how they rank the Rocky movies. And we all have our own order. Right. Like no one's gonna have the same exact order. It's like my theory on Tom Hanks movies. If you tell someone Give me your top four. Your Mount Rushmore of Hanks. No one's gonna have the same four. I don't think anyone's gonna have the same Rocky order because I think right out the gate, like snowflakes.
G
And they're all different women's.
F
Yeah.
G
Wow.
F
So when you look at all the Rocky movies, I'm not even going to include the Creed movies, but want to hear a fun fact?
G
Yeah.
F
The Money maker. This is. You put your glasses on to hear this.
G
Oh, yeah. Well, I'm trying to see, you know, the rankings here.
F
So total cost to make all the Rockies and the Creed movie. So that's nine overall blockbusters. $187 million. Just shy of $2 billion.
G
Wow.
F
You're like, there's a lot of money.
G
And Stallone is in a rare category of multiple franchises. Between the Expendables and Rambo and Rocky, only few have done it as big as Sylvester Stallone. So we salute you on this day, on the anniversary of its debut was over the Top of franchise.
F
Over the Top was the most ridiculous movie. When you think of the premise. Truck Driver, there was an arm wrestler.
G
A little over the top.
F
We all loved it.
G
Right. The arm wrestled to get custody of his kid. But the theory is this, guys, we all love the Rockies. We love the Rocky franchise. We all got pumped as kids watching the movies, shadow boxing in our kitchen in our socks, sliding around. We all had that punching bag. Probably with Clubber Lang on one side.
F
Yeah.
G
And Rocky on the other. Right. The Italian Stallion. Absolutely. But we all have different orders of appreciation, and mine is simple, so I'll go first.
F
You know, age before beauty.
G
There you go. To quote the old Rocky might get punched in the nose. Because some people need to learn the hard way.
F
The Italian Stallion.
G
Rest in peace, Colin Weathers. Let's go. I'm going with the OG I know that's debatable, but you can't debate the original. It's the best. It won the Academy Award.
F
If there's no Rocky, there's no Rocky. 2, 3, 4, 5. I get it.
G
I know that other people are gonna be like, yeah, but the other one's better. This and that. No, this is the first. It's still great. It's the one people talk about. It's the one that goes down in the history books. All right. It led us to all these other ones. You can't beat the first one. Rocky, the OG Adrian, the Red Brain, all that stuff. Number one. Number one. My second favorite in the Rocky franchise. Rocky 4. Soundtrack Living in a Man. I mean, they all have easy way out. They all have great soundtracks, right?
F
So on fire.
G
But just the craziness of it, the. The novelty of it. James Brown and Ivan Drago. It's the goofiest one, probably, but the most entertaining. I view it as the Temple of Doom of the Rocky franchise, meaning Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom might be the dumbest one, but it's the most entertaining. So Rocky 4, for me, everything he hits, he destroys. Ivan Drago. And again, seeing that in the theater as a kid, for me, that's right there. It could be number one, but it can't be better than the original. So it's number two. I got Rocky 2 at number three because it's great. Rocky 2 is arguably as good as the first one. So I got Rocky 2 next. I got Rocky 3 after that. Now, this is tough because they're all good. Rocky 3 was good. Yeah. Yo, I got the poofy hair now. I got, like, poofy hair. I'm fighting Thunder Lips and Club Lang. Oh, he insulted my wife. Absolutely. No, the real man. Yeah. So, I mean. And Mr. T was the baddest in the land at that time. So Rocky 3 is next. Then I got Balboa, because I thought Balboa was really good.
F
Good movie.
G
It is. You know, people didn't like the sad undertones of the movie, but I thought it was great. If you slept on it or you didn't like it, I think you'd. You should watch it again.
F
I really actually enjoyed Rocky Balboa.
G
So I got this at 5, and I have Rocky 5 at number 6 on my countdown. And I say that respectfully because I know everybody says it's the worst, and it is, but it's the worst of awesome movies. If you watch it again, the only real criticism is, well, I don't like the storyline because he's down and out and poor. Well, whoop dee doo. You didn't write the story. That's the life of Rocky. Arc of Rocky, that's. And that's the arc of a lot of fighters. Right? So you don't like it.
F
Big deal.
G
But the criticism is he didn't fight in the ring, if he fought Tommy.
F
Gunn in the ring.
G
But it's still a good movie, I promise you.
F
Yeah, we'd all love it. I watched it within the last couple years, and my big takeaway was, yeah, this isn't as shitty as I remember. But at the end, when he's in the street, like, go for it. It's sort of corny, like, no bell. Like, even that part's cool. There's a scene where Mickey's giving him a motivational speech in black and white.
G
When here's the downside of it, too.
F
When he thanks George Washington Duke instead of Rocky.
G
Like, you got Tommy Morrison in it. Look. And you got to give credit to Stallone for always casting former athletes in all of his movies. Even in the Expendables, he's known for doing that. And in this movie, you had Tommy Morrison, who was a legitimate contender, heavyweight division, right. He was a legitimate heavyweight fighter. And it was a good story, man. But in this story, and I'm not. Well, I'm not saying he was punchy. He had what you call like, a relaxed brain or something. His brain was really.
F
What happened to Ruggy?
G
Yo, Santa. Remember Uncle Paulie was Santa.
F
He's like, yeah, stupidest seed ever.
G
Yeah. But so I know it gets a lot of criticism. It's still last on my list, but it's not as bad as people say.
F
My list. Not terribly different than yours, okay? You give Rocky one the top spot because it's Rocky. It's the OG Academy Award winner. I'm ranking this based on if I were flipping through the channels or if I was on Netflix or Hulu, and I'm like, what would I actually be like? You know what? I'll keep watching this because I have to. I have to tell you, Rocky 1 would not be the movie in 2024 that I'd sit down and be like, I'll keep watching. I am a firm believer that Rocky 2 might be one of the most underrated films of all time. There's extra training montages when Adrian is in the hospital. Rocky, come here. You're like, what if you don't. You don't want me to mix it up with Creed no more? We'll find another way. And what does she say? Just win. And then what does Mickey say? What are we waiting for?
G
You see, at every stadium, right?
F
Hits so hard. So I'm going, Rocky 2 is number one for.
G
Did you notice that? Like, Cobra Kai this season sort of paid homage to that scene a little bit?
F
I did notice that.
G
I mean, if you haven't seen it, I don't want to spurl it.
F
So I'm going, Rocky 2 is number one. And then by default, I have to put. Yeah, look at the scene.
G
Win, win. What are we waiting for?
F
I'll fucking fight right now.
G
Play it at every stadium in the world to get the fans fired up. Look all the montages are great.
F
That's the best montage.
G
Yeah, it's hard to rank. That's why everyone's going to have a different list here.
F
So I'm going Rocky 2 in the top spot. Just out of pure, you know, respect, I have to put Rocky 1, the original, in the number two spot. So I'll go 2, 1. And of course, the most entertaining Rocky of all four, Drago. You know, the Rolly and his robot and, you know, like, going to Russia.
G
Happy birthday, Paul.
F
You know, training in the mountains, Dragos in the gym, Drago. So Rocky 4, most entertaining maybe of the whole series.
G
But that's, by the way, that's when Stallone is the most slick and the most rich. So you love that as a kid, because in Rock, remember, I said Rocky 3 had, like, poofy hair. I was getting a little cut. You know, I was getting in shape a little bit by Rocky4. He's so roided out and ripped and rich as a kid, you're like, oh, my God, it's great.
F
You know, I think it's hard to really debate my order. 2, 1, 4. Then I'm going 3. As much as I'm a Hogan fan, he was my hero as a child. I thought the Thunder Lips thing was sort of cheesy. Clubber Lang was great, though. I loved how he lost. Mickey dies, Apollo trains, Rocky. There's a lot of good storyline in three. So hard to even say that's not a top three. But 2, 1, 4, 3, Balboa. Underrated. And even though five's not as shitty.
G
As you remember, still the worst.
F
It's still the worst of all these great movies. You know what? I'll give Michael B. Jordan and Stallone and everyone credit. I thought all three Creed movies. Fantastic.
G
Same. So if you don't have weekend plans After Week 12 of the NFL, maybe you go back and watch these, come up with your own order again. I'm Rocky. Rocky four, Rocky two, Rocky three, Balboa and five.
F
Two, one, four, three. Balboa, five.
G
That's Rich's order. What's yours? Hit us up at Covino and Rich at Fox Sports Radio. Hashtag Rocky movies.
F
Can I tell you all?
G
Hashtag over. Promise.
F
Our regular update anchor, Dan Beyer. Yeah, he hasn't seen Rocky.
G
I know. I can't believe it. I know. One day we're going to have to take him out for Hibachi because he never had Hibachi. And a Night of Rocky movie.
F
There's something. Listen. Peculiar things about people. Some of the people. I very much enjoy their company. The fact that he hasn't seen Rocky. The fact that your girlfriend hasn't seen the wizard of Oz. Like, there are movies where, like, who raised you?
G
I know. Like, come on, wolves. Wolves.
F
Come on.

F
All right, well, hey, there was records broken in the NBA. The NBA's back. I know a lot of people pumped about this.
G
Well, this was a cool story and it also was a timestamp of man. James Harden. Harden's been in the league for a minute now. He's been doing it on a. On a high level for a long time.
F
James not so Harden.
G
James soften. Yeah. Now James Harden climbed up to number two. On three point leaders this week, Steph Curry obviously being top dog right there. Over 3703 point shots.
F
Yo. Steph Curry's three point records are like Jerry Rice's receiving records. Yeah.
G
No one's catching it. Pun intended.
F
No, for real. It's like when you look at Jerry Rice compared to the other greats like Randy Moss, it's like, how What? That's how Steph Curry, like, even the closest are not even close.
G
So James Harden surpassed Ray Allen for three point shots made. Right.
F
Any surprises on there? Kyle Korver, assassin number seven. It's pretty cool.
G
Reggie Miller still playing. He's on the list. Billard's still playing. He's on the list. Reggie Miller, obviously, you know he's on the list. LeBron James, just for longevity reasons. You know, he's there, but you're like, damn, James Harden passed Ray Allen. He now has 2,975. Ray Allen had 2, 9, 73. And you're like, dang, Ray Allen came so close to 3,000. He'd be in elite company with Steph Curry.
F
Mr. 3,000. Listen, there's a lot of people that come close to records or just benchmarks. And I know that bothers the hell out of a guy like Cavino.
G
It bothers me because Ray Allen is one of the greats and he's known for his three point shot and he came so close. He came a half a season away, you know, of reaching 3,000.
F
When you think about being a professional athlete, everyone's got those numbers on their mind, like 300 wins, 500, 500 home runs, you know, so many touchdowns, passing, their legendary marks. And when you fall just shy, you might say, oh, who gives a shit? But it just looks funny.
G
As a fan and as a kid who collected baseball cards, you would see these stats like, oh, he's so close to 500. So that leads us to, based on the Ray Allen thing. And congrats to James Harden again at number two. Falling short of milestones. So who comes to mind when you start thinking of people or athletes falling short of milestones?
F
Listen, these athletes may genuinely say, who gives a shit? But as a fan, you know, as fans, we're more critical than the player sometimes. So these are some of the people that we're thinking in the back of their mind, they must say, man, I couldn't have played one more month, like two more games.
G
And by the way, you nailed it. Perfect segue. Because the first one that comes to mind for me as a Yankees fan, as a baseball Fan is Alex Rodriguez. Now, keep in mind, he didn't play in 2014. He was suspended. So season down the drain in 2016. I still don't know how and why he only played 65 games. He wasn't having his best season. He was maybe in a little hot water, right? So they just like ended his career at 65 games. He ended up with 696 home runs.
F
Four, four short home run shy of seven hundo of 700.
G
So look, that would haunt me.
F
That would haunt me.
G
Alex Rodriguez, who lives for baseball, I don't know how he sleeps with that. You know, falling this short of a 700 home run milestone. Again, being an elite company. He's so close to 700. He could have still played. He should have had well over 700. I mean, I don't know how many of those he was juiced up for, but still, he would have had 700. 696.
F
There's a couple guys, and I knew one of them, but there's this two guys that were stuck at 399 home runs. I know from baseball card collecting. Andreas Galarraga. 399. I. You know, even with that Alta altitude in Colorado, he couldn't pop out one more.
G
All those Rockies were hitting bombs at that time.
F
One more.
G
Yeah. Three ninety nine. That sucks. One more home run and you're like in a different conversation, a different category. So close to 3.99. And then a legendary ball player also finished at 3.99. Even though 500 is like the hall of Fame, of course, landmark, but still, you. You want that number, right? Al Kaline of the tigers ended at 3. 99. Legendary player for Detroit. And there's a legendary photo of him, too. Spot of him with like JFK in the background.
F
Look at that.
G
Look at all the people in this photo. Al Kaline, lbj, jfk, Jimmy Hoffa. Yeah. So that's a wild photo.
F
That's cool.
G
On a Throwback Thursday.
F
I got. I got a couple football ones.
G
Yeah.
F
This is one that satisfies your OCD.
G
Okay.
F
John Elway. Exactly. 300 career touchdowns. Like, that's. I mean, like anyone out with two Super Bowls back to back.
G
I mean, talk about the best way to end your career. This guy did it perfectly.
F
They should call this guy the finisher. I mean, three career buddies.
G
There's dudes that are labeled Mr. Almost Allah. Mike Musina, right, Who came so close to so many milestones. Then there's guy like guys like Elway who just did it so perfectly, man. It's good to be Elway in this conversation.
F
I'm bringing this guy up because I know he still got gas in the tank even though they stink. The Jets. Aaron Rodgers currently has 492 Tuddies.
G
Oh, my goodness.
F
He needs eight. I'm not wishing bad on Aaron Rodgers.
G
Eight for eight.
F
But I mean, who's to say he gets there? I mean, is he. If he plays one more year, for sure. But the jets are struggling. It's not like this guy's doing his old school. Aaron Rodgers. Three tuddies a game.
G
Like, come on. Oh, man, that's gotta eat him up. I mean, he plans on. I mean, we don't know. Not at this rate, but yeah. 492 for Rogers. And of course, I know you wanted to bring up Warren Moon.
F
Kobe, he's got 17 now, so with that said, he'll get over.500 just at this pace this year. But imagine, God forbid, he got a little banged up and he doesn't come back.
G
So again, falling short of milestones. Warren Moon.
F
Yeah, listen, he played in the Canadian Football League, the cfl. He's a legend, hall of Famer. But he's like one game. He's two games shy of 50,000 yards. He's got 49,325 yards.
G
So, yeah, when you combine his Canadian career, his professional career, the guy's done it all. But still 49 and change and then almost 50,000 yards. So close.
F
I got one that I don't think I didn't tell you this.
G
Yeah.
F
But there are four guys that you know, okay. Lifetime average in Major League Baseball.
G
299.
F
299.
G
Oh. So why would I tell you the two now?
F
This is Active player Mike Trout has an opportunity to change that. So cross Trout off.
G
Okay.
F
Three guys that are done that wrapped it up like great MLB careers. But their stat line, 299, which is.
G
Again, 399 in today's world. Right? In today's world. That was fantastic. But still one point away from 300.
F
299.
G
Yeah.
F
Dustin Pedroia.
G
Oh, wow.
F
Because he had a couple bad seasons at the very end that pulled it down.
G
Or his big Poppy. What did Big Poppy call him? He called him something else. Remember? He like, why they call you Dustin? I could be. He. He's like, that's my name.
F
Matt Holiday. 299.
G
Oh, man.
F
And another. We talked about the Rockies before, man. The rockies. Dante Bichette. 299. Imagine that. You're like, man, like, if I dropped in Three more Bloop singles.
G
And of course the number one name that comes to mind when you think of falling short of milestones is Stan Ross, aka Bernie Mac as Mr. 3000 because he was known as Mr. 3000.
F
And then they realized, oops, there was a clerical error.
G
He ended up with 2,997 hits. Came back to the bigs at 47 only to get two more hits ending at 2,999.
F
Of all the sports movies we've watched.
G
I've never seen it.
F
Of all the major leagues and Field of Dreams and you name it, all the great movies.
G
Slapshot in America, I've never seen that movie.
F
Neither one of us. Maybe that's our weekend watching.
G
But the premise.
F
Do you go back and watch Interesting Mr. 3000.
G
Yeah. I wasn't sure if he ended up with 3000, but no, he was known as Mr. 3000. Came back and then the story is he fell in love with the game all over again as an older guy and he had a chance to get 3,000 hits and he lays down a sacrifice bun or something for the team.
F
Well, now you gave me the premise. Now I don't have to watch.
G
It's old as hel. But rest in Peace, Bernie Mac aka Stan Ross. Mr. 3000. Just one hit shy of regaining the title. Well, of Mr. 3000.
F
Before we get out of here tonight, some Thursday Night Football about to start up. So if you want a last minute wager, okay. DraftKings sportsbook code cr show I got a teaser that I'm not in love with. But then again, sometimes the ones I'm not in love with are the ones that hit easy. I know you think the Steelers, like you said earlier today on Fox, you can't see how they lose to the Browns.
G
I don't see that happening.
F
Short week, travel, everything. These Thursday night games are all. They're screwy as my dad would say.
I
Oh yeah.
F
I mean you never know what you're going to get Thursday is, you know, depends on the coaching, the travel. There's so many things involved. Divisional game the Browns are three and a half point underdogs. Make the Browns a nine and a half point underdog. They're not scoring a lot. I don't think the Steelers offense is lighting it up. It's more about their defense. So I like the Browns plus nine and a half under 42 and a half the over under in this game. Cavino is only 36 and a half so I'm even. I'm going up and picking the under. I feel like this game. You know what this game has written all over? 1610, 16, 13, 1310.
G
Like Russell Wilson's time to shine. Do you think little Thursday night game, he wants to light it up tonight?
F
Low scoring, shitty game. Low scoring, shitty game. And you're gonna be like, man, rich is right. 1610 Steelers. And then you cover your bet.
G
All right, I like it. I like it. So enjoy week 12, your Thursday Night Football and of course to Sakai Takai. Enjoy that this weekend.
F
Perfect. We'll see you then. Arrivederci baby.
G
See you in the over promised land later.

In Episode #70 of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, hosted by iHeartPodcasts and The Volume, Rich Cavino and his co-host delve into a nostalgic yet critical examination of the iconic Rocky film franchise. Celebrating 48 years since the debut of Rocky Balboa, the hosts explore the evolution of the series, ranking each installment while reflecting on personal and cultural impacts. Additionally, the episode shifts focus to notable sports milestones, particularly James Harden's recent achievement in the NBA.
Celebrating Rocky Balboa's Legacy
The episode kicks off with Rich Cavino and his co-host reminiscing about the enduring legacy of Rocky Balboa. They highlight the cultural significance of the original film, which debuted in 1976 and catapulted Sylvester Stallone into stardom without prior prominence.
Rich Cavino ([04:02]): "Debuted today in 1976, winning the Academy Award, putting Sylvester Stallone absolutely on the map as the guy didn't have to sell his dog buckets."
Ranking the Rocky Movies
The hosts engage in a lively debate over the rankings of the Rocky movies, each presenting their perspectives on what makes each installment stand out or fall short.
Rich's Ranking:
Co-host's Ranking:
Co-host ([07:24]): "Rocky 2 might be one of the most underrated films of all time."
Rich Cavino ([12:53]): "Happy birthday, Paul."
The discussion underscores the subjective nature of rankings, with both hosts acknowledging that personal experiences and preferences heavily influence their evaluations. They also touch upon the financial and creative achievements of Sylvester Stallone, noting his success across multiple franchises like The Expendables and Rambo.
Nostalgia and Personal Reflections
Rich and his co-host share personal anecdotes about watching the Rocky films during their childhood, highlighting how scenes like shadow boxing and training montages left lasting impressions.
Co-host ([06:24]): "We all got pumped as kids watching the movies, shadow boxing in our kitchen in our socks, sliding around."
They also admire the casting choices Stallone made, particularly his decision to include real athletes like Tommy Morrison in Rocky Balboa, adding authenticity to the films.
Rich Cavino ([10:17]): "But you got Tommy Morrison in it. Look. And you got to give credit to Stallone for always casting former athletes in all of his movies."
Shifting gears, Rich and his co-host transition to discussing recent achievements in the NBA, focusing on James Harden's ascent to the second spot among all-time three-point leaders.
Harden's Achievement: James Harden has surpassed Ray Allen, moving up to the second position in career three-pointers made, trailing only behind Stephen Curry.
Rich Cavino ([17:02]): "James Harden climbed up to number two. Steph Curry obviously being top dog right there."
They draw parallels between Harden's record and legendary sports figures, emphasizing the significance of this milestone.
Rich Cavino ([17:19]): "It's like when you look at Jerry Rice compared to the other greats like Randy Moss, it's like, how? That's how Steph Curry, like, even the closest are not even close."
Impact of Falling Short of Milestones
The conversation then delves into the emotional and professional ramifications for athletes who narrowly miss significant milestones. They reference various sports figures across baseball and football who ended their careers just shy of iconic benchmarks.
Rich Cavino ([19:09]): "Alex Rodriguez ended up with 696 home runs. Four short of seven hundo of 700. That would haunt me."
Examples discussed include:
Co-host ([21:32]): "Aaron Rodgers currently has 492 Tuddies. He needs eight."
Emotional Toll on Athletes
The hosts ponder the psychological impact these near-misses have on athletes, suggesting that falling short of such milestones can be a source of ongoing regret and motivation.
Rich Cavino ([19:26]): "As a fan, you know, as fans, we're more critical than the player sometimes."
Towards the end of the episode, Rich offers insights into upcoming NFL games, specifically focusing on Thursday Night Football. He shares his picks and predictions, providing listeners with strategic advice for placing wagers.
Rich Cavino ([25:52]): "So if you want a last minute wager, okay."
He analyzes the matchup between the Steelers and the Browns, highlighting factors like short weeks, travel fatigue, and team performance.
Rich Cavino ([26:14]): "Short week, travel, everything. These Thursday night games are all. They're screwy as my dad would say."
His prediction leans towards a low-scoring game, advising listeners to consider the under bet.
Rich Cavino ([26:21]): "But I'm going up and picking the under. I feel like this game... has written all over it."
In this milestone episode, Rich Cavino and his co-host blend nostalgia with critical analysis, celebrating Rocky Balboa's enduring legacy while engaging in thoughtful discussions about sports achievements and the psychology of near-misses. Their balanced approach offers both entertainment and insight, making the episode a must-listen for sports enthusiasts and film aficionados alike.
