We are part of the Voluum podcast network. This is the show. It makes the square sharper. It makes the wise guys pay attention. I am Chad Millman. I am joined as always by my co host, my bff, my companion, my compadre professional better Simon Hunter. Hello, Simon.
E
Chad. How we doing?
A
Dude, we got so much to catch up on even from the past 48 hours in the NFL. We're going to get into it very quickly. We are going to dive into the NBA finals between the Knicks and the Spurs. Jason Timf, who was supposed to be on with us today to preview from the beginning of the finals is dreadfully sick. If you've watched his show Hoops tonight, you know he is fighting through it because he just keep plays. But we can't make him come on the show and have to do his show as well. So hopefully we'll be seeing him on Thursday show when he's better. The Stanley cup finals do begin tonight in Raleigh, North Carolina. Carolina Hurricanes facing the Vegas Golden Knights VGK in a battle for Lord Stanley's Cup. I was in Vegas last week when they clinched. It was exciting. We'll be diving into best bets in the series with the help of an old friend, our hockey expert from the New York Post, former action network College Mike, Mike Leboff. But first, Simon. The two big NFL trades went down yesterday. We were immediately discussing how the odds were moving on Super Bowls. One was the foregone illusion that has been discussed by everybody. The best tea in Philadelphia being dished. AJ Brown finally getting traded to the Patriots. The other one, Miles Garrett to the Rams. Before we get into Miles Garrett, let's talk about A.J. brown. The Patriots get a 2027 first. They get a 2028 fifth. They were planning for this, how he was doing his thing. AJ's off to New England. As a better, as a fan, let's approach this from both angles.
E
Yeah, really interesting. Is it better Patriots now? I think 16 to 1 super bodies, Eagles dropped down to 19 to 1. So not ton of movement but still enough, right? That's how important AJ is. And I think that's, you know, a huge move to New England. Even if, even if AJ has a bad knee, whatever they're trying to pitch, the reason he, you know, is damaged goods. I just don't buy it. I just see a guy that's just the highest level talent and it's going to be the best weapon Drake May's ever had. So from Patriots side, you got to be really happy. From the Eagles side, you know, never great when your team's getting a little worse. But from their, from their standpoint, I think they traded a first round pick and a third round pick form and they got four years out of them. Two super bowl appearances, you know, obviously won a Super Bowl. I think he had the most receiving yards in Eagles history in that four year span. Like just set all these different type of records and you know, nothing but, nothing but love on the Eagle side sending AJ out. But I think from their perspective this upcoming season, it's not ideal. Right. You're losing such an incredible talent, but you Know I look like Howie playing for this, right? Drafting Lemon, kind of shifting the offense to be less reliant on the X receiver and trying to put the ball more inside the field rather than playing the ball totally outside and just playing one on one matchup. So, yeah, I, I love the move for both teams, honestly. I think New England, it's, it's great for them for right now and for the Eagles, it's. It's great for right now because it just seemed like it ran its course. Right. I think he did an interview that got released this morning. AJ just stuck to. It's like him and Hertz at the end of the day, that's. It seems like that's what it was at the end of the day. Right. Whatever happened below, their relationship just wasn't the same these last two, three years. And you know, AJ grew up a Patriots fan, so yeah, it sounds like it worked out for both parties. And I saw you from the get go, I thought he's gonna handle like professional, right? He never went to the media. He's a team captain. You know, his whole antics of reading stuff on the sideline, that was when things were good. People act like that was when it was bad. No, that was when we were winning. He just was a guy that had to bite his tongue a lot. Right. He was someone that was clearly unhappy in this offense and I hope he finds what he's looking for.
A
Right.
E
It's New England, Joshua McDaniels, that should be a high flying offense there for him. So, yeah, nothing but the best rage. I'm just happy he's out of the NFC as well.
A
Look, it could end up being Howie as always managed this brilliantly. Right. It was clear that the end was here for this team. You mentioned some of the sort of the stats that he had in those four years. He ended up becoming a top 15 all time receiver in just four years. For the Eagles that obviously have a storied franchise. The fact they went to two Super Bowls, he won the title in those four years. You got as much out of this guy as you could get. And not everything in the NFL was forever. And we're seeing that with the Myles Garrett trade too. I think the Eagles played this perfectly. Feels like a little bit more of a risk for the Patriots. You know, they're getting a guy who could just be. It could just be one or two years. It could be what they need to get them to maintain their positioning. And what I think is going to be a much more competitive for them, afc, the Chiefs will be improved. I think the Bills will still be a big challenge for them. Their schedule is going to be harder. We saw what would happen for Drake May when he was in the playoffs. He wasn't perfect in the playoffs, even with the shoulder injury. So I don't know that this is the fix. It's interesting to me that the Eagles dropped in their Super bowl odds to 19 to one of the Patriots improved to 16 to one. I would see a lot more value in the Eagles all of a sudden personally, like they're revamping their entire offense so they don't have to be building around A.J. brown. I got a lot of faith in that organization.
E
Yeah. And we're gonna get obviously into sprouds more with the Rams coming up. But it's. This is just public perception in my opinion. Right. That's why it's like. Yeah, I totally agree with. You're saying it's. It shouldn't, it shouldn't have moved the way it did. But my view is like, if you're, you know, a believer of this Patriots team, this is the best move. I don't know even if it is just two years, he's 29. You're seeing Devonte Adams play well, pretty well, until it's 33, 34 years old. Now I know they're different type of players, but I do think AJ the way he takes care of his body, that could be a great trade for them. And it's also Drake May, if he is what all these people perceive him to be like. You see these people putting out their quarterback list now. They already got Drake May as a top 10 quarterback. If these things are true, this is the next step. You go get that number one true, number one quarterback, which, you know Jalen hurts. You just look at the stats, how much he got better, improved. Adding A.J. brown to his, to his team. And the same should be for Drake May. It's like, okay, me and you both agree, we think he'll take a step back because the schedule will be harder, but this could be the equalizer. Like this is just such an absolute game changer having that one on one receiver at all times on the outside. And yeah, it's, you know, the super bowl odds the way people bet. It's all about the shiny new toy, Chad. You know that. So yeah, I am total agreements. But I think a ton of value shifted. This Eagles team, they're kind of being not a little bit left for dead, but the fact of their odds dropped was just interesting to me.
A
Yeah, that's Shocking to me shows a complete lack of faith and understanding in how the Eagles build that the roster, the talent on the roster. What I would expect to be a much better year after the Eagles had such a down year, like we've seen it with them multiple times they go to the super bowl, they have a down year because their staff gets rated the next year after the two years after the super bowl, they are a significantly better team because Howie is now at a chance to rebuild into a second year.
E
And I just want to say a down year though, this is how good this Eagles actually, I know it was after a Super bowl and if they just would have played their starters in the final week of the season, they would have been the two seeds. That's what I mean, that, that's. But I'm just saying the general public, when you hear them talk, they're like, well, they're coming off on this year from hell. And you know Hertz had a horrible year and you know Saquon had a horrible year and it's like the expectations, we just put it so high because you know the town level is that high in this Eagles team. So I think we're both in agreement. It's like people just have this, this bad taste in their mouth. This Eagles team, right value, they should probably be 10 to 1 and you're getting 19 to 1.
A
So yeah, this is a, a, a no brainer super bowl value bet to me. I have. People are excited about the Cowboys and they should be and I'm excited about the Cowboys. I actually was really impressed with Brian Schottenheimer and how we manage that team. The defense can only get better without IBRA floose and with players coming back from injury.
E
But Caleb Downs, my guy, you can get him nine to one right now for rookie, defensive rookie of the year.
A
And look, that's probably great.
E
Yeah, he's going to be great.
A
I want to get to Miles Garrett, but you just said something really interesting to me about and you and I always have big debates about our top 10 quarterback lists and you mentioned Drake, may people have him at his, you know, in their top 10 list. Caleb Williams, by the way, is going to be the COVID of Madden. It's already sent us into a deep, deep spiral here because we know we've been cursed. We've been cursed with a challenge schedule, we've been cursed with high expectations. We're cursed because the Bears might move to Northern Indiana and now we got the COVID of Madden. When we get to the top 10 quarterbacks, Simon just Preview it for me right now. Well, Caleb Williams or Drake may be on your list.
E
One of them will be.
A
One of them will be interesting. No, it's time you don't just say more. Let's tease it. We got, we got three months before we have to say it.
E
Like you're saying though it's, it's a really interesting year coming off last year where Lamar had a down season. Right. Mahomes had a down season and these year two guys both got to the two seed and Bo Nick's got a one seed. So I mean last year was really upside down with these new quarterbacks coming and taking what's theirs and yeah, I can't wait to go through our list. It's always fun exercise, breaking down our list.
A
I think it's going to be more changes than ever potentially. Ty Simpson could be top 10. Miles Garrett traded from the Browns to the Rams. The Rams doing what they do, they're. They're Eagles. Ask in their ability to manage their roster and turn it over and continue to be a really good team. So Myles Garrett, two time defensive player of the year highest paid defensive player, sack record Last year the Browns get Jared Verse defensive rookie of the year 27 first rounder 28 second rounder, 29 third rounder. Look, if you're the Rams, great. The Browns are one of those teams that I think you and I were getting super excited about. Just like a fun little taste. We thought they've done an incredible job rebuilding their roster. So much talent. They have developed a tight end at running back along the defensive front. You know the defensive line and the backfield and linebacking core with their rookies the past couple years. Really good drafts. Quarterback is obviously the big question. I'm not buying desean Watson hype when he's throwing against rookies in sweatpants but man, this, this takes a little bit of the enthusiasm out of the Browns for me. Jared Verse, as good as he is, he's not Myles Garrett and Miles Garrett was a game changer for that team. He made people game plan differently for that defense.
E
Yeah. Oddly enough though they went from 201 to 201. They're super. Did not move. So I agree with you. It's, it's, it's not ideal but on the grand spectrum of things it's, it's slam dunk. You just traded for a kid with a ton of upside. Who. You know as an Eagles fan I saw him bull rush mulatta. He was like one of the biggest freak athletes I'VE ever seen fall backwards and versus nowhere near the sides of this man. That's the strength, the center of gravity this kid has. So this Browns organization, you know, the whole AJ Thing I know Patriots got upset about, but how he was shopping them like it wasn't just the Patriots because the Patriots thought they were the only ones at the dance because the Rams kind of pulled out of it in February and apparently they were like, hey, we'll give you a second. We're not giving up a first. And that's how he said, find that. I'm going to shop them around again. The Browns were a real thing like the Browns for a Janner first for Miles. How I was trying to get it done. But the Browns, I think they held firm in the sense that if we're going to get rid of our all time, all great, the end, we needed the end in return and I love that move for them. And you know, going forward, like we keep talking about the. This organization is doing the right moves. Right. The only thing missing is that quarterback. And who knows if it is Watson, if he has a one hit wonder year here and he gets another contract somehow. But I think we're both agree, we really don't believe in Watson. We think that's. That ship has sailed. So it's going to be a defensive team. I think as much as it hurts to lose Miles Garrett, I'm excited to see what they're going to be like now with having. Having a guy like him step in in person. You know, I just, I still think, you know, the line didn't move. I think it was seven and a half week one. We talked about it. I think it's still the same. So most people did think he was gonna be traded, right? He hasn't been to OTAs. Miles Garrett, there was just a lot of drama.
A
Hasn't met with the new coach.
E
Yeah. Had him met with a new coach. So I think the books have already known this was coming. It was just gonna be ready to go. And I, I won't lie, I was shocked the Rams made this move. So I'm excited to talk about the ramp side of it because I don't know about you, but I right away I thought, okay, they are going to get so much hype now on the next 24 hour cycle of talk shows because it's big, it's sexy and they've just gone for it, right? McDuffie, what more can you ask when you go get Miles Garrett that defense? My God, Chad, that's. That's Pretty terrifying.
A
Well, look, this Miles Garrett is better than Von Miller, but it has that sort of Von Miller, Jalen Ramsey vibe when they also had Stafford. So now they still have Stafford, who's coming off an MVP year. Now they're getting Miles Garrett. They've bulked up in the secondary where they needed it with McDuffie, like you just said, which is why you sent a tweet yesterday. And the super bowl odds for the Rams dropped from. From plus 800 to plus 600. So 8 to 1 to 6 to
E
1, down to plus 550.
A
Which is absurd.
E
Yes.
A
So you sent out a tweet. I mean, that's truly absurd. Plus 550. You sent out a tweet yesterday that raised a ruckus, betting the Rams not to make the playoffs. And I could totally get why nobody would want to bet on the Rams to win the Super Bowl. Now there's just no value. It's moved too much. But not to make the playoffs. Explain yourself.
E
Explain you why it's a good bet to bet a team at +350 to not make the playoffs with a quarterback who has a bad back who's what, 37, 36 years old? A lot of miles on him. I would say it's a smart bet. And anyone's out there, it's not fun to do this, but this is my job. I'm looking for value. No value on the Super Bowl. You're literally. It's only plus 200 difference between them missing the playoffs and them to win the Super Bowl. Like, think of everything has to go right to win a Super Bowl. We only need one or two things to go wrong to them not to make the playoffs. And that, that starts with Stafford and, you know, can they deal with a backup quarterback? Who knows if Jimmy Garoppa is coming back? Who knows if this rookie and Ty Simpson can step in after he's only played 12 or 13 college games. Like, there's just a lot there to be scared of. Fear the Rams because of that division. Right? Like that. That division is so tough. Seattle 49ers, both are going to be just as good as they were last year. If not in the 49ers case, possibly better. Right? They just had so much injury. I just can't get over these odds. I really can't. And the fact that, you know, they play the Bills, they play Denver, they play the Chiefs, they have all. They play the Eagles. Like they, The Rams have a brutal out of, out of division schedule on top of, you know, everything else. I've talked about, which is those seven prime time games. It's, it's not going to be easy. They're going to have a long year and it's not going to be a letdown week, right? No. They get Arizona, they get the Raiders. Sure. That's a mini bye week, you could say, but still it is the NFL. They catch you sleep and they're going to catch you. So I couldn't believe it when I saw Those odds, Chad. Plus 350. You just, you don't really see that unless it's what this is, which is a super team. This is truly a super team. So, you know, I get why the general public is so in love with it, but I think that's why I loved how many people loved my bet on them to miss the playoffs is just so many sickos out there that agree with me, which is like, dude, you're one bad hit away. Like we saw with Mahomes last year from the whole season just being over like this. You lose a quarterback, even if they lose Stafford for five, six weeks and he comes back in that division and how tough the NFC is, We're not even talking about the NFC north potentially having three teams making the playoffs. Talking about the Cowboys as well. There's just a lot of teams that could sneak in that 6, 7 seed that could bump this Rams team out. So you know, I rather, I don't want people betting on the Super Bowl. That was my whole point of this was like don't be betting on them at plus 550 or plus 600. If anything, take them but a small bet on them and miss the playoffs because that's where the value is. And you know, if it's week 17, week 16, week 18 even and they're plus 100 or plus 120 to make or miss the playoffs, you get an easy hedge. And that's all I'm trying to do at the end of the day. So yeah, that, that move really got me fired up because right away I knew, oh my God, the talk shows. First take our guy cowherd. They're going to be having a field day here with this Rams team. And just talking about the shiny new toy which is the best defensive player in football going to this team. So MVP defense, player of the year, Chad. It's, it's pretty incredible.
A
Rams have the shortest odds to win the super bowl right now ahead of the Ravens, Bill, Seahawks and Chiefs. So that's everything you need to know is the team that did not get to the super bowl last year. Normally, it's always going to be, you know, the super bowl champion. Not surprising it's not the Seahawks, but the fact that it's now the Rams and then the Ravens. That tells you everything you need to know about public perception for everything that's happening in the NFL right now. Super exciting. Let's do a quick word from our friends at Zbiotics on the other side of the break. We're going to talk some Stanley cup bedding action with Mike Leboff. Matt, summer's almost here. You know what that means. Beautiful weather, long days, cocktails on the patio. Also, we both know that after a few stiff drinks, we don't bounce back like we used to. Sometimes we've had to choose between a great night or a great next day. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers.
C
And guess what?
A
We have some big news. What's the news?
C
Huge news.
A
We created our own podcast called hey Jonas.
C
We invented a podcast.
A
Well, we didn't invent it.
C
We.
A
We just contributed to first people to do podcasts. Pretty. Yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts, but this one's extra special.
C
So how did we.
A
How do we actually come up with the name hey Jonas? Guys, I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call
C
about what we should call it and.
A
Well, we were thinking. I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers was. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes, I have a very different memory of this.
C
We were talking about a thing a
A
bit for the podcast. People could call in and say, hey Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, hey Jonas. And offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys.
C
Listen to hey Jonas on the iHeartRadio

app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it.

Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it getting a new one put up in its place.
A
As long as there's a politics of race in America, there's going to be a politics of remembering the Civil War.

To get to school, I had to go down Robert E. Lee Boulevard, get

I had to go down Jefferson Davis Parkway. If you're a historian and you leave out half of what the history is, you're not doing your job.

We contain essence, we contain spirit.

How do you represent that? They are just fueling a fire that is really catching.

Mainstream media is full of crude depictions of the unhoused. Stories that shame and blame and paint the unhoused as a Monolith. We the Unhoused is the podcast that's changing that. I'm Theo Henderson, creator and host, and for years I've created a space where the unhoused and their advocates can tell their own stories. In the last few months alone, I've interviewed unhoused parents, immigrants, mutual aid organizers, veterans, the LGBQTIA community, and the policymakers who make the laws that impact the unhoused existence. We Unhouse is a two time Webby and Signal award winning show with many exciting guests on the horizon. Tune in this week for my interview with Dr. Gio Witcherick, a street doctor turned influencer whose work with the unhoused community has made a huge impact online and in her community. Listen to we the unhoused on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
A
Alrighty, here we go. Let's talk some Stanley cup finals. Carolina Hurricanes in the cup for the first time in 20 years. Last time they were in the cup, they were led by Rod Brindemore as a player. Now they are led by Rod Brindemore as a coach. They are playing the Vegas Golden Knights. What a miraculous freaking franchise. Third Stanley cup finals in nine years of existence. Unreal. That's got to be some kind of record for an expansion franchise. One win, one loss. Let's see what they can do. They took out the best team in the NHL in the Colorado Avalanche. Joining us to talk all things betting on hockey's biggest stage, our longtime friend, crown prince of Long island, ran for mayor of his town. Season ticket holder to the New York Islanders. Loves the Islanders so much, he named his first daughter after the team. Former Action Network colleagues, always good friend. Now at the New York Post, betting expert Michael Leboff.
C
Hello, guys. Yeah, nice to see you. Yeah. My first daughter named her after the Islanders. Her name's Isla. And then my second daughter, I named after my favorite Islanders general manager ever, Lou Lamarello. Her name is Emmy Lou. So. And we're having another kid. I'm breaking news to you.
A
No way.
C
Yeah. So in December. So I'm. I'm pushing for the name Wade to name boy or girl to name after my favorite Islander ever, Wade. Wade Dublowitz.
E
So.
A
Wow, that's amazing. Congrats. You guys are going for it. Three kids. Like, it's gonna be like three kids, what, under five?
C
Yeah. I don't. Has anyone ever had three kids before in human history?
A
Don't listen, don't be that way.
C
I mean, I'm one of five. I would I would. I want, you know, my Chris. Thanksgivings and Christmases are chaos, and I'd like more of that in my life, so who knows. Who knows how many?
A
I will say that my wife and I have a tinge, a little tinge of regret that we didn't have more kids. We have it, like, around the holidays, you know, when it's us and our two boys and her mom and my parents, and it's not as loud as we would like it to be, then we get to go away because we're done raising kids and we don't have to think about it, and it's just glorious. And so then we get over it.
C
Yeah. Yeah, I know. I could. I can see it. But, yeah, I'm excited. I mean, I. I need people around me, so I'm happy to. To keep expanding the family, but I'm not here to talk about that. So let's talk some hockey.
A
I was in Vegas last week, and I was in Vegas when the Golden Knights clinched against the avs in Vegas. It was amazing. And the fact that Vegas has become such a fantastic hockey town and it's had such success as a hockey fan, and we want to get to the game. You know, the game's tonight, and I want you to give some people ideas on what to bet. But as a hockey fan, can you put in context at all what this run has been like for the Golden Knights? To be in the third Stanley cup finals, to really never be a bad team, despite being an expansion team.
C
Yeah. 30. 33. 33 of their seasons have ended in them in the Stanley cup finals.
A
Absurd.
C
I've never seen the Islanders make a Stanley cup final. I'm 36, and I've never. The Islanders have never won a division. They haven't in my lifetime. Last time they wanted division was 1988. And this is across all sports. Like, teams just accidentally win the divisions. You know, like, sometimes the division just stinks and the team will, like, finish. I don't know, the NFL. There's 17 games now for some reason, So a team will be like, 8, 9, and win a division, and that's. It just happens. And the Islanders haven't even just been able to accidentally stumble into a division, so. Yeah, but I don't. What I like about Vegas is they do something really revolutionary, which is they go and get good players, which to me, sounds like a really good idea that maybe other teams should try.
A
That's it.
E
He's being nice. We, as NHL fans, I hate Vegas with a passion. I. I hate all like the fact that the Panthers. But we're winning it. Vegas is now always in it. The Carolina Hurricanes give me a Northeast team. I know it's biased, but my God, these or Canadian team at least. I can't get over these warm states getting the best of the best hockey experience. It sickens me. I hate it so much and I mean I, I can't even get into it because it's going to upset me too much. I don't want to dive too much. But the fact that Hart is the goalie for Vegas as a Flyers fan, Chad. Not that it doesn't keep me up at night, but it does. There's some nights I'll roll in bed. I go, my God, my golden child is now in the Stanley cup final on Vegas. So I'm bitter across the board. I'm gonna watch it because I love hockey, but my God, am I gonna hate watch. I'm just, I'm rooting for her. I'm rooting for the Hurricanes. I just can't have Vegas when I hate this expansion team. Team like he said, 33 of their existence. So my, like I like he even, even an Islander fan. I can't even understand how suffering his life is, but the fact that he's never seen his team win a division and this team here is in the Stanley Cups three times in nine years, John. It's sickens, man.
A
Look, the Vegas fans got spoiled very, very quickly. I was, I was in Vegas for a conference. The International Gaming Institute, which has run out of unlv, has a conference every three years. And they had asked me to come and be on one of the panels. So I was out there and the night before dinner, the organizers of the conference, there were a bunch of us at dinner and they're all huge Golden Knight fans. And the next day when I was introduced, when our panel was introduced, the organizer was wearing her Golden Knights jersey because everyone in Vegas is so enamored with that team. Here's. You guys want to hear a great betting story? So, you know, I'm working on this book the number that's going to come out next year. And one of the guys I write about in the book is a professional better who had been in Vegas for a long time and went to the Golden Knights first home game in 2017 and was so thrilled with the performance. The Knights were two. And oh, at the time they won that game, they went up early in the first period and the whole town is getting behind this team. And the experience was so electric for him that he Just started scrolling around in his app looking for, you know, fun Stanley cup sweats to make. And the Golden Knights were 300 to 1 at some sportsbook, I forget which one. And he put down 400 bucks, which was the max he could get down. And then all of a sudden the Golden Knights go on this run. And so now he's got a chance to win 120 grand on a bet when he made, when he was half in the bag and was just rooting for the Golden Knights in their home opener as a franchise. And then everyone in Vegas started offering not to win the title bets. So he started hedging. And while he was hedging, the Caps went down to nothing in the first round of the playoffs. And they were one of the best teams in the NHL, so their odds to win the Stanley cup then became 40 to 1. So we put a grand down on the caps to win 40 to 1 at 40 to 1 because he thought they lost in double overtime in the first two games at home. Like they're the better team. They've got a shot here. So all of a sudden the Caps meet the Golden Knights in the finals and he's got the caps at 40 to 1. He's got a fight for 40 grand. He's got 100, you know, 400 to win 120 on the Golden Knights. And he's got some big bets at, you know, bad numbers on the Golden Knights to win, to not win. He ended up winning 90 grand because he had every base covered. Talk about sort of your professional betters hedge and playing the field off of a crazy. I'm just going to enjoy the moment because I love the Golden Knights bet. What do you think of that, Simon?
E
True sicko.
A
Leave off. Las Vegas plus 130. Carolina minus 150. This is game one in Raleigh tonight, 8:00pm Eastern. The total is five and a half. You know, give us some initial opening thoughts on the game right now.
C
Yeah, these, these two teams have very different pass to the final, but they're similar teams. Carolina relentless, like pressured, but they're defense forward, right? They, they want to stop you from scoring before anything else. And Vegas is the same way with, with John Tortorella, who, I mean, he would throw his own kids in front of a puck to stop it from, from reaching the goalie. So it's going to be a game, a series where the works will be gummed up quite a bit and I don't know think scoring is. We won't see very high totals even if you know Tonight just ends up being a weird game where it's like 7 5. I think tomorrow you'll or for game two you'll still see these low totals and to get used to that. And so I like the, I like the 00 after the first period today because I just think both these teams first of all Carolina's had a very easy path and they haven't seen a team like this. So I think they'll be you know, toe in the water kind of stuff. Try to make sure that they like the temperature before they start taking any risks and Vegas will sit back and enjoy that too. So I could see this one starting pretty slowly. Both goalies have been in good form too coming in. I think both goalies have big picture question marks. Just haven't been all that good for the season but turned it on in the playoffs so we could see the goaltending kind of just decide who ends up winning the series because I think the two teams are pretty equal. But yeah like that. If you, you want like a first goal scorer bet. I think William Carrier on Carolina would be an interesting one. He's a former Vegas Golden Knight, a guy who just gets around the front of the net and I think both teams are going to do basically everything to shut down the other's top two lines. John Tortorella is a master at taking away his opponent's biggest strength. So I think that those bottom six for each team though that's we're gonna see some, some guys from, from the bottom of the lineup step up. So Carrie to me, interesting storyline with him being a Vegas Golden Knight who won a Stanley cup with them. He'll be a big number to get on the board first as well. So yeah it'll be interesting series. I'm pulling for the Knights. I think there's there they'd be the team I'd want to bet it's not the most exciting number but you know Simon talked about a hate watch before still embroiled in a. In a decade long hate hate watch of John Tavares and the Toronto Maple Leafs. But as fate would have it they got Tavares by Mitch Marner who plays for Vegas and he. But the difference is he got run out of town by his the fans and media. Whereas we kind of got on our hands and knees to keep Tavares around and the big thing was he just could never perform for Toronto in the playoffs and now he's a consmite favorite. So I would love nothing more to see than see Marner win the Stanley cup in his first year in Vegas, win the Con Smythe and then bring the cup to his hometown of Toronto for his day with the Cup. It would be beautiful for me.
A
So wait, but what, you just gave us a first goal bet? Yes, but I don't know if you gave us a different bet on either the sides or on the total, which is five and a half.
C
I would like I said I like the first period to be 00.
A
Oh, okay, I missed that.
C
And then the first goal would be William Carrier because like I said, I think that these, there's gonna be like a fencing match in the, in the beginning. Like they're just gonna be poking and prodding and I think unless, you know, like I said, it could go gangbusters. But I think that first period 00 bet will be one to play the entire series because they just, these two teams both just love stopping pucks more than they like scoring on.
A

Mainstream media is full of cruel depictions of the unhoused, stories that shame and and blame and paint the unhoused as a monolith. We the Unhoused is the podcast that's changing that. I'm Theo Henderson, creator and host, and for years I've created a space where the unhoused and their advocates can tell their own stories. In the last few months alone, I've interviewed unhoused parents, immigrants, mutual aid organizers, veterans, the lgbtqtia community, and the policymakers who make the laws that impact the unhoused existence. Radiant House is a two time Webby and Signal award winning show with many exciting guests on the horizon. Tune in this week for my interview with Dr. Jill Wicherich, a street doctor turned influencer whose work with the unhoused community has made a huge impact online and in her community. Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is getting a new One put up in its place.

All right, so you just mentioned you might like Vegas in the series. Vegas plus 125. Carolina minus 155. Give us your take on why you like Vegas in the series.
C
Yeah, Carolina hasn't they. They play a very specific style. They're an outlier with how they play. They're, they're relentless. They man to man pressure all up and down the ice and if you can't counter punch, you're going to be in trouble. And the teams that they played so far, Simon's flyers for sure, Ottawa was just so banged up and Montreal, they're just not built to absorb that pressure. Kind of weather a storm and then spring counters the other way. Whereas Vegas, that's one of their strengths. Like with Marner, Jack, Eichel, even their, their defense is really mobile and they can, they make great breakout passes. Rasmus, Anderson, Noah, Hannifin, Shay, Theodore, like these guys will join the rush to create on man rushes. And that's how you beat Carolina. Every year we see it with Rod Brendamore teams, they get to the, to the Eastern conference final and then they run into a team that can beat them on the counter. They've done it against the Rangers, they've done it against the Panthers. And I think Vegas is built to do that. So I think that in, in a series that looks pretty much like a coin flip. The stylistic advantage to me goes to Vegas with their ability to counter punch. So yeah, I'd much rather bet Vegas and if you can, you know, maybe you wait, maybe they go down one nothing here and you bet them at an even bigger number. But I would Lean towards Vegas. And like I said, it's just not the most exciting price out there.
A
Simon, what are you hearing from inside your circles?
E
Yeah, hockey's a little different. Professional betters. Right. It's especially a matchup like this where it's so evenly matched. I think Carolina is the favorite. I think they're minus 150.
A
Yeah.
E
Series price. But you know, most guys I talk to, I feel like they're doing a Leo Buffs doing. Right. They're kind of taking a position after game one. They're kind of going to see how these two styles play against each other. And I, I am biased. I'll be like I said it from the get go. I just think this Panthers team is so talented. So I'm excited to see what Vegas is going to do here.
A
Hurricanes. Hurricanes.
E
Yes. Yes. Hurricanes.
A
You're confusing your sun belt.
E
I know, Caroline.
A
No one, no one cares about them. Teams. Exactly. Exactly.
C
That's a, that's a Chad Millman's ESPN days take. Why are we showing highlights of the Florida Panthers game on SportsCenter?
A
I've come around on the hockey. I have gotten full into the playoffs. Like, I love the sounds, I love the checking, I love the intensity. I really got into the Canadian series against the Hurricanes and then their series before that. Like I just was really enjoying watching the NHL playoffs so far. So I'm tuned in, leave off.
E
And that's what really impressed me with the, the, you know, that series, I thought mantra. I was going to steal it. They just momentum and you know, this Carolina. Say what you want about this team, man. I know they're, they're better and they're talented, but man, are they just tough as hell. Like they just beat you up. So that's why, like I can't wait to see it. Like, you know, this is gonna be fault in the middle of the ice. I can't see these two type of styles because there's going to be two teams just grinding it out the entire game. So Chad, you're saying you love playoff hockey? This is like as good as it gets. These are two teams just so physical. I can see by game two or three they're gonna absolutely just hate each other and we're gonna get plenty of good fights too. So I really can't wait for this series.
A
It's so interesting to me, you know, to get into the weeds here. Tortorella came in and you mentioned Tortorella Lyuboff and took over this team that seemed like it either was exactly what it should be. Or wasn't playing up to its potential when he came in to take it over as the season went on. And all of a sudden, clearly the answer is they weren't playing up to their potential. What, what switch did he flip Leeboth?
C
The previous coach, Bruce Cassie, won a Stanley Cup. Yeah, ninth, Right. Like. But he's notorious for having a really short, short shelf life with his players. The, the. His old team in Boston, who he went to a Stanley cup final with, basically they revolted against him, goes to Vegas, they win a Stanley Cup a couple years later, and like, they sort of revolted and made it pretty clear that, you know, they weren't going to be able to. They tuned him out and then they bring in Tortorella, who's also got a short shelf life. But yeah, it doesn't matter when you bring someone in with seven games left in regular season. And for all us faults, what Tortorella is really good at is just getting teams to be hard to break down and, and he's done it in a pretty quick time. And Cassidy's the same way, so it's not like he had too much heavy lifting to do. But yeah, he's got a. He's got a lot out of a group of players that now are starting to hit their potential marner for sure. It looks like a new player under Tortorella, Tomas Hurdle, who I like. He's 35 to 1, most goals in the series. I think that's a really good bet. He's, he was really struggling and Tortorella seemed to have. Have got him on the right, on the right path. He got William Carlson back, who Tortorella did not like in, in Columbus then. Now he's coaching Wild Bill in, in Vegas and the two of them seem really chummy and he's playing great hockey and it's kind of his return has balanced that lineup really well. So, yeah, he's just, he's done a masterful job. He's. And he still looks, you know, he's handsome as ever, weathered skin, just a guy that you love to have a, have like a nice dinner with. But yeah, he's. He's been awesome.
A
If Taylor Sheridan were doing shows about, you know, Canadian ranchman ranchers, I feel like he'd be the prototype he's after.
C
He's a, he's a. Got the thickest Massachusetts accent you've, you've ever heard. Tortorella.
A
That's true.
C
You gotta maybe Old steel mill in Fall River, Massachusetts. If Taylor Sheridan wants to get into some rust Belt.
A
I've been to Fall river, did a Chris Heron story.
C
I think that's where Aaron Hernandez is from.
A
No, Aaron Hernandez from Bristol, he's from Connecticut. Bristol, Connecticut. I remember.
C
Did he get in trouble in Fall River? Maybe he got in trouble in Fall River.
A
I don't know if he got in trouble in Fall river, but we had fucking crews out at the lake half a mile from ESPN's campus while the cops were dredging the lake for weapons.
C
I think he has some connection with Fall river, but we'll leave it at that.
A
Anyways, you just gave a little bit of a hint for one of the props. I want to talk about most goals in the series. Anyone for Conn Smythe. Anyone else for most goals? Anything for exact games, series, exact result. What are some other things you're looking at?
C
Yeah, so I, I think Tomas Hurdle, if you're going to bet a Vegas player for most goals, Carolina spreads it around so you can always just look for a long shot for them. Logan Stankhoven was 65 1. I didn't get invited on this show, but on another show I gave him out for most goals for round one and he hit that one. So someone like, like William Carrier is 250 to 1. If he scores two or three goals, he could be in the running just because of how low scoring the series will be. Conn Smythe, though is interesting because if Vegas wins, it's going to be really hard for the media not to give it to Mitch Marner because of the story. Right. Leaves Toronto. Most of the media emanates from Toronto. In hockey, it's a great storyline. So you could just bet Mitch Marner to win the Kant Smythe if you like Vegas and you'll get +170, which is a better price than the series price, obviously. And for Carolina, it's still open. Taylor Hall, Fred Anderson, they're. They're single digits. But there's a couple other guys that with big series they could kind of catch. Hall, Stankhoven, Jackson, Blake, which is seth Jarvis, is 51. Sebastian Aho, they're 50. They're both 50 to 1. They're top line players. The two most talented players on Carolina, at least at forward. So those would be my two guys in Carolina, Jarvis and Ajo. Whereas I think if you're betting a Conn Smythe winner from Vegas, it's Marner or bust. It's really hard to see someone, someone else taking it from him. And part of that is Carter Hart's very kind of complicated past. And I don't think that even if he's the best player in the series, a lot of hockey writers want to vote that story in. So I think it's marner or bust for Vegas.
A
Leeboth, you know, this is a literate betting podcast, maybe the most literate of all betting podcasts. And, you know, Theodore Dostoevsky is probably our spirit author and you're familiar with a life of struggle and pain and the incessant nature of all of that. Matt Mitchell would like to know if this will continue for the Buffalo Sabres and the people of Buffalo. That series with the Canadiens was exhilarating but also brutal for the Sabres. And I really wanted, that's why I was into it. I wanted the Sabres to win. You got any thoughts for Matt Mitchell before we go?
C
I mean, what's nice about Buffalo across all sports is like they, they deliver what they're supposed to deliver. Wouldn't have been, wouldn't have been fun if they, you know, especially the first year after the drought, they make a Stanley cup final, know there's there. They can't do that. They get the little, you know, pat on the back now. And now that expectations will be raised, that's when we can really get into the pain for the Sabers. But I do want to say if you on, on YouTube, you can watch the full 1999 Stanley Cup Final, which is the famous Brett Hole skate in the crease Stars Sabres series, you'll be shocked to know that Buffalo didn't win it. But they, that series is such compelling drama and Gary Thorne is on the call and it's just, it's sports at its best. So I would just say Matt can always just go and watch that to soothe his pain. Bill Sabers, it's so good. It's just, you know, old broadcast style, right to the point. There's no here's the celebrities at the game and you know, these weird dances that people do and it's just sports, beautiful sports.
