Yeah, definitely is. But, you know, with this league come injuries for sure.

Yeah.

We can sit back and harp on, you know, we lost this Game because we didn't have this person. We lost this game. We didn't have this person. Like, I've. I've sat back and watched this team win, win games with, you know. Yeah, a lot of the stars that we have on our team hurt, so, I mean, we can't sit back and blame that, but it definitely play a part in it. But overall, you know, definitely anxious to get back. Definitely anxious to get back to work with all the guys, for sure. Just, you know, we got this chip on our show. Like, this is, like, my real first year not making the playoffs since I've been a Niner, and it just feels so weird just to sit back and just sit back every Sunday and be like, yo, yeah, this team is playing with. Normally, you know, we all teams that's.

[AJ Stephens]

Always knocking at these teams, thinking if we were full strength, we'd whoop all these teams.

[Debo Samuel]

I mean, there's a lot of ifs, but we wasn't there. So we just. We just. We just get ready for this year.

[AJ Stephens]

We're talking to your dude, Fred Warner, the other day.

[Debo Samuel]

Yeah.

[AJ Stephens]

And I said as a fan and as a guy on the team, we were feeling the same thing every week. It was like, all right, next week is when things turn around.

[Debo Samuel]

Yeah.

[AJ Stephens]

It just never. It never happened. But next year, with everyone healthy and.

It'S at Levi's, next year, it's going.

[AJ Stephens]

To be a homecoming. You're going to do it. Yasi, is it. Is it fun to work with Devo on this campaign?

[Seal]

I've been a fan of this guy since he was at Carolina, so, yeah, you know, he's. It's great to be standing next to someone I've admired. I'm a frustrated athlete myself, and just to be, you know, to finally meet Debo and tell him about all of the great moments that I've enjoyed watching him create. It's been special. And to do it with Mountain Dew is amazing.

[AJ Stephens]

What we find awesome is the mutual respect. We talk to a lot of, you know, superstars in the music world. They admire athletes, and athletes admire people in the music world. It's like a mutual respect.

[Seal]

Is an allegory for life. I think that's why people connect with it so much. You can see a lot of the daily trials and tribulations and challenges that we go through in life. You can see them being played out on the football field, you know, or whether it's on a tennis court. You're watching life unfold. And to see an athlete transcend something that has been holding Them back. You know, it's. It's a reflection on life. And so that's my connection with sport.

[Kavino]

Well, cl. I could tell you you're probably a great athlete. You're a big dude.

[Debo Samuel]

No, no, no, no.

[Seal]

I'm a frustrated athlete.

[Kavino]

Frustrated athlete.

[Seal]

Like, I'm not a great athlete. I mean, but I try, you know, and that's. That's the important thing.

[Kavino]

But, Deebo, is there an artist inside? Man? Can you sing? Are you any good at any instruments or.

[Seal]

Done after seven?

[Kavino]

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[Debo Samuel]

I mean, I gotta. I got a little voice on me. I got a little. Little something.

[Kavino]

But was there a part of you growing up that you're like, man, I kind of want to know always. Athlete from day one. When did you realize that? At a very young age.

[AJ Stephens]

Yeah.

[Debo Samuel]

So I kind of started playing tackle when I was like, 4 years old.

[Kavino]

Oh, so that was it.

[Debo Samuel]

Yeah, that was it. My dad was my coach for a long, long, long time. And, you know, I always played with the. With the kids that was older than me for. It's like my brother and. And all that stuff.

[Kavino]

Same question for you, Seal. Like, did you know, like, I'm gonna be a singer at an early age?

[Debo Samuel]

And he thought he was going to be a tennis player.

[AJ Stephens]

I heard you say tennis before. Yeah.

[Kavino]

So at first it was tennis.

[Seal]

I wanted to be a tennis player. I didn't think I was going to be a tennis player. You know, I had. I had a teacher at school, Mr. Ren, and I idolized him. He was the cool teacher, wore the cool clothes. Like, everyone to. Everyone wanted to be like him. He was different from all the other teachers. And he sang, you know, he was a singer. But then, you know, he got a real job as a teacher. And I kind of started singing because I guess I wanted to be like him. And he put me on stage when I was 11 at the parents and Teachers association evening to sing a Johnny Nash song called I Can See clearly now. You guys are probably too young to remember that. And I remember going to the stage, it was the scariest thing that ever happened. He called my name, and it was acapella. So they were. You know, I had back in. He called my name. He said, we got this young seal is going to sing a song for you right now. And I walked to the stage and I saw my parents in the audience and all of these. All of the parents of the other kids and everyone there. And literally, I wanted the stage to just open up and swallow me. I was frozen, but I closed my eyes and I sang this song and it was kind of like that scene in a movie. You could hear a pin drop. I sang this song and at the end of it, I still had my eyes closed and everyone clapped and I saw my parents going, wow. Because they'd never heard of Zimbabwe.

[Kavino]

Mouth dropped. Wow.

[Seal]

And so that place that turned into the scariest place, place on earth, it immediately felt like home. And so I always knew I would return there. So I guess the reason that the real takeaway from that story is that we all need people to see us. We need, you know, for you, it was your dad who saw you and saw something great in. When you were four years old, you know, and you were playing tackle at that age, you know, he saw it in you. For me, it was Mr. Wren. He saw me and, you know, whereas other teachers thought I was going to be a waste of time, you know, because I have adhd, so I never paid attention in school and they thought I was going to be a waste of time, but he saw me and he brought out something special.

[Kavino]

It's an amazing story, man.

[AJ Stephens]

This is perfect because when I'm here, I'm missing career day at my kids school. Cool. I'm gonna send them this clip. How cool is that? Ms. Wagner's class is gonna see Seal and Debo. I start coincidentally coaching my son, who's four this weekend, so I gotta keep that eye out. Yeah, maybe my son will be the next Debo. Samuel, I gotta ask, people talking about you rolling up in an Eagles jersey this week. Is that you just supporting your boy? Are people making a big deal about this for no reason?

[Debo Samuel]

Just. That's definitely me supporting my brother for sure. Been locked in for a long time now. We're going on about 88 years of, you know, being my guy. You know, just showing support. You know, I always say, like, if I'm not in it, I want one of my peers to win it. Of course.

[Kavino]

Am I feeling a little Eagle biased here? Because you're supporting your boy and he wants to fly like an eagle to the sea.

[Seal]

I'm not gonna let you do that. No, no. That song is that song that you just singing there, right? Is literally the only association I have with the Eagles. It begins and ends there.

[Kavino]

Really? Okay.

[AJ Stephens]

But. But I can only imagine 0 and 2 against the Chiefs. You can't be loving this team.

[Debo Samuel]

No, no, no. Not at all.

[AJ Stephens]

Not at all. Not at all. Robert Salek, is that a big deal for you, even though you're on the offense? He seems like such a vibe guy now.

[Debo Samuel]

Hey, man, this man energy is. Is through the roof. I seen that happen. I was like, bro, we got one of our core guys back. Because when I got drafted there, he was there.

[AJ Stephens]

Yeah.

[Debo Samuel]

So, like, you know, he was. He was the high energy guy. The. To get everybody going when. When things ain't going right. He always there to bring it back together. Like, he. He's the guy for sure.

[AJ Stephens]

Know what I always wonder, Kavino? Is there. Is there a 49ers group chat and you. Are you guys talking about this while we're learning about it? No.

Everybody be cool and just. Because at the end of the day, there's nothing that we can control. It's just, you know.

So I'm just like, all right. But he got some. After, you know, listening to that and listening to songs, he got some bangers.

Let me ask you this. Talking to other 49ers, everyone seems sold on Brock. I like Brock as a fan. Is Brock your guy? No matter what, he's.

Mr. Irrelevant, how is that lucky? No, but I'm saying the fact that.

No, I not lucky. But, Mr. Irrelevant, you saw, people were saying when. The minute he joined your team in practice, everyone's like, like, this guy, bro. This guy.

The first preseason game I watched him play, we played Houston, and he showed glimpse of like, yo, like, this kid is talented. And I'm just like, he just get out the pocket. He'll be moving. I'm just like, yo, like, who is this guy? Like, you know, he always one of the guys that practiced, that stood at the Back like, he used to just throw. Like, he told me a story. He's like, hey, Debo, man, I used to just. I just think he was just so mean and just.

[AJ Stephens]

This is funny.

[Debo Samuel]

He's like, I just throw you the ball and just turn around before you even catch it so you don't come back and talk to me.

[Seal]

I love. I love what. I love what you said. Your response to these guys saying lucky. You know, I heard this great quote by my brother, Tiger woods, one day when somebody accused him of being lucky. And he said, yep, how do I practice the luckier I get, right? And I think that's the case with. I once heard. I think it was. I think it was my brother Steve Young, talking about the quality, the intangibles of a quarterback that not a lot of pick up on. And he said that, like, what he learned from Montana was that. That if the game's on the line and you know, you got to put form the value in going into the huddle with your guy, with your leader, and you see that he's cool and he's not panicking and he's. He's calm.

[Debo Samuel]

He'd never.

[Seal]

And he's confident. So I wanted to ask you, what is it like in those moments when you go into the huddle and you see your guy Brock, who's calm?

[Debo Samuel]

Sometimes it be crazy because sometimes Kyle get to play in late, and you know, them quarterbacks get frustrated. He like, I can't hear nothing. He was like, all right, bro, let's get him. I'm about to. All right, ready?

[AJ Stephens]

Break.

[Debo Samuel]

So he's like, all right, you have no choice but to get in this car with this dude, no matter where he going, and just sit back and ride with him.

[Kavino]

That is so cool to hear.

Is he that calm in the huddle?

[Debo Samuel]

He's the, like, when I say like, I mean, it's like the moment is never too big for him. Like, see, the only time he get kind of frustrated is when Kim and Kyle is going back and forth on the headset. And the time getting lower. Cal saying one word, but want to change the play. He changed about four, five times. Brock is like, bro, like, what? Give me the play. Like, give me something.

[AJ Stephens]

By the way, for the record, seal Debo. I did not say Brock was lucky. I was saying the ners lucky was there.

No, I want you to chow down on these wings, and then when you get messy and you're like, man, what do I do to clean this up? I got your Bounty fix right here.

This is what we clean up. Because you can't have football without wings. You can't have wings without bounty.

Well, let me start before we talk football. And also all the fun stuff. Blue cheese or ranch? This is like the debate that never goes away.

[Nate Thompson]

So I think if you were asking, like, an OG Buffalo wing dude, which Rob Gronkowski.

[Seal]

Gronk.

[Nate Thompson]

And he's the bounty man. He asked me to be his wingman in this is. I think he would say blue cheese.

[AJ Stephens]

I'm a blue cheese guy myself. I feel you.

[Nate Thompson]

Yeah, but I'm. I'm dairy free, so I stay away.

[AJ Stephens]

From the way when you say Gronky, I mean, you had some great tight ends. Jimmy Graham in his prime and everything, but. Oh, yeah, I mean, would have been fun to play with Gronk.

[Nate Thompson]

Oh, Gronk's a monster. I don't think you realize how big that dude is.

[AJ Stephens]

Yeah, he's hilarious, too. He's. He's everywhere.

[Nate Thompson]

Yeah, yeah, like. Like, I get it. You know, he's. He's like his person. Here's the thing. Like, he's so much fun to be around. Like. Like, you know those dudes that just. They're just having more fun than everybody else.

[AJ Stephens]

That's cronk, right?

[Nate Thompson]

Like, just, like, can we inject that? Like, is that injectable?

[AJ Stephens]

You know, some people are so subdued, and he is the complete opposite.

[Nate Thompson]

No, no.

[Kavino]

Yeah, that's how I feel, like, in social media. Like, why is everybody living such a great life? Everyone's having so much fun. That's Gronk, right? Why Is he having so much fun? What is it?

[Nate Thompson]

That is. Although he was asked today because we were doing a bunch of stuff together, they were like, you know, when's the Gronk beach bash? That happens at every Super Bowl. He's like, you know, I've outgrown that.

[AJ Stephens]

I've outgrown that.

[Nate Thompson]

I've turned the page to a newer. A newer Gronk.

[AJ Stephens]

A mature Gronk. He only crushes three beats beer Kansanite on his head.

[Nate Thompson]

But then he goes, no, we, we. We've actually moved it to April 20th at WrestleMania. All we've done is just postpone it.

[AJ Stephens]

Hey, Drew Brees, hanging with Kavino and Rich. I think Super Bowls. I happen to be at the one that you won. And I remember it was the first Super Bowl I attended. And, you know, you with your son and the headphones, is it a lasting image? And now I think back, I had to look at it before you got here. Your son's like a grown man.

[Nate Thompson]

He's 16 years old, man.

[AJ Stephens]

He's. He's a grown boy.

[Nate Thompson]

Dude trying to get his driver's license.

[AJ Stephens]

Is that wild to you? Looking back, like, that might be the coolest father son picture. I gotta figure out how to do that with my kid one day. Yeah, can't replicate that.

[Nate Thompson]

You know, it was. It's crazy because obviously as a kid, you know, I was a sports junkie. You know, I wanted to be a professional athlete, actually want to be a professional baseball player. Football wasn't really on the radar, but once I was kind of on this football path and I just envisioned like, you know, what's the. What's the ultimate goal here? What's the ultimate prize? Win the super bowl and, yeah, the Lombardi Trophy. But like, honestly, I just had this image in my mind of if I ever get a chance to be up there, like, I hope that I have a son that I'm able to share that moment with.

[AJ Stephens]

You envision that?

[Nate Thompson]

Sure enough, all of a sudden it's like Simba manifestation of just, you know, here it is, you know. And so honestly, it was like time stood still. It was just. It was the most amazing moment.

[Kavino]

Two questions as he grows up and by the way, such an awesome moment. But he's 16. Do you get in the car with him? He must have his permit. Are you frightened by this? And do you get him his first car?

[Nate Thompson]

Yeah, look, he's. I think every 16 year old boy definitely had like the connections quite. Aren't quite all there, you know what I'm saying? Like it's still, you know, like they still do and say stuff where you're.

[Kavino]

Like, what does he have, the broccoli head haircut?

[Nate Thompson]

Oh, for sure.

[AJ Stephens]

Yeah.

[Kavino]

He's the kind of kid I'm keeping my 15 year old daughter away from. Stay away from the broccoli.

[Nate Thompson]

There's no question. I got a 10 year old daughter and I'm just like, oh, gosh. But yeah, you know, he's, he's actually been pretty good. Like, not too bad. You know, we learn how to park, you know, in between cars and actually drive next to cars and have awareness with changing lanes.

[Kavino]

So scary, man.

[Nate Thompson]

Dude, it is. Yeah, it's really scary. I'm not, I'm not really excited about the whole driving thing other than the fact that like, finally it's. You don't have to drive them everywhere, you know, Hey, I want to go here. Great. Drive yourself. Yeah.

[Kavino]

Because you're his child.

[Nate Thompson]

Yeah, exactly, right?

[AJ Stephens]

I feel like this guy every day, I'm like, where are you? He's like, I'm driving my daughter and it's always just somewhere, like not close.

[Kavino]

And their friends and everything else.

[Nate Thompson]

Yeah.

[Kavino]

Now you're talking about Gronk before and his personality type. You were a great leader, man. Tell us about that. When you're dealing with all these different age groups and personalities, what was your approach to leadership?

[Nate Thompson]

Well, it was, it was interesting later in my career because, you know, here I am, call it 37 to 42 years old, right? And just about everybody walking in the locker room is 22, 23, 24 years old, right? So huge generational gap. Like, there were moments where I'm in the weight room, like a song comes on the radio or something. I'm like, ah, dude, this was my jam. Like eighth grade middle school. Like, like you're envisioning like a middle school dance or something, you know, you're like, ah, this is like, you see one of the young bucks and you're like, hey, man, you remember this song? They're like, it's like, I wasn't born diapers. No, no, no. Totally. Exactly. You know, now my kids call me an unk. Like when I say stuff like that, like, dad, you're such an un. So anyway, but like at the end of the day, like showing these guys that you care about them and showing these guys, man, I like, I want to help you be successful. Like every, at the start of every offseason, I would ask these young guys, I want you to write down three goals for me. Like, I want a Professional goal. I want a personal goal. I want a family goal, and I want us to go through those things together. And I want you to know that I'm there to help support you.

[Kavino]

You would actually do that?

[Nate Thompson]

Absolutely, I would do. I would write them down for myself, and then I would. It was kind of a vulnerable thing. I'd show you guys, hey, guys, this is what I'm trying to accomplish, man. Y'all hold me accountable, and then they share it to me and, like, okay, I'm gonna hold you accountable. But the end of the day, like, look, every. Every guy who comes in the league has these visions of, man, I'm getting to this. This big con, this second contract. Like, I've got these personal goals that I'm trying to achieve, and I always wanted those guys to know, man, I'm right there with you. Like, take your role. Accept your role. It may not be the role that you want right now. This is where you want to be. Here's what you have to do to get there, and I'm gonna help you get there every step of the way.

[AJ Stephens]

That's amazing leadership right there.

[Kavino]

Yeah. And he did it for 20 years, so he had to have a knack of leading all different types of men. And who do you see that leadership in today? Like, who do you admire? Like, that guy. He does it right.

[Nate Thompson]

You know, it's hard not to admire these young QBs that are coming up right now. In fact, it's. It's. It's. I feel like it's fairly unprecedented where. Where literally, like, let's kind of start with Mahomes's class. Hard. Hardly. He's like the elder statesman at year, you know, seven as a starter, you know. Yeah, but. But, like, you just kind of go down the list of guys like Lamar and Josh, right? And then kind of that burrow class, right? And then these six dudes who came out last year, right? And the year Jaden Daniels had and Bo Nicks and, like, now Caleb. Will Williams is getting, you know, Ben Johnson, right? And so, like, you look at this. These. These guys, and just going, man, like, the future is so bright for the NFL with all these young QBs. But, like, there's something about Jaden Daniels, obviously. Solomon. LSU actually spent a little time with him at LSU right when he transferred there. Was really impressed with, like, his poise and composure and just felt like there was, like, a focus and intentionality and. And he kind of, man, from his junior year to his senior year, man, like, there was this. This flip. And as I Watched him this year. I watched. If you want to know about a guy, just watch the way guys react towards him, you know, like, watch the way the O line reacts when the dude gets knocked down, you know, and if they're running over to, like, lift him up, they're like, okay, they love his guy. Or, like, after the game, a touchdown pass or something, man, everybody. So, like, I see these guys and, you know, whatever their style is, just make sure it's authentic. I don't think there's a lot of rah rah guys, but, like, man, sometimes you're fiery. A lot of times you're poisoned, composed. But at the end of the day, like, the more that you care about your guys, man, the more that they're going to want to take care of you.

[AJ Stephens]

Drew Brees, hanging with Kavino and Rich. I just picture the last game you played in. When you looked back out on the field, you took that pause by the tunnel, turned around and looked. Was that. Was that one of the more emotional moments of your life that didn't involve maybe your kids or wife?

[Nate Thompson]

Yeah. I mean, look, it was obviously, it was. It was tough because, you know, it's Covid, and so there's no fans in the. In the stands, you know. Right. So didn't really feel like. Got that great feeling of closure, you know, and obviously you just lost a playoff game and, you know, you. You hope that you would have kept going further, but yeah, it was just. I kind of. I kind of knew that, you know, that was. That was probably it. And so just that one last glimpse at that Would have been home for so long.

[AJ Stephens]

You ever get the. After you retired, did you ever get the itch? Like, I know I could still do it. Like. Like when you'd see, like, Tom doing it in his 40s, like, I could probably.

[Nate Thompson]

I'll be honest with you, if my right shoulder wasn't, you know, I had that really bad injury in with. With the Chargers, and I knew I was on a fast track at that point to, like, early onset arthritis and just a bunch of wear and tear. Right. And the doctor told me that, and he's like, man, you just kind of hang on as long as you can. I used to call it prolong my prime. Like, I'm just going to prolong, prolong, prolong. But, man, the last couple years, I could just feel like, man, it was just a struggle just to kind of throw throughout the week to get to game day. Right? And you function, right, you find ways to survive. And, like, man, I couldn't throw it much past like 45 yards. Right. But I'll freaking rip you up inside of 30.

[AJ Stephens]

I was gonna say your football IQ was on the charts, but that's what.

[Nate Thompson]

I'm saying is like your, your mental, your, your knowledge, experience, wisdom is at an all time high. But the physical skills start to diminish. Like if I could throw the ball, like my body I could play. I could play right now. Right. I could process the game. I still see the game. Right. But just the right shoulder doesn't. Now maybe he's a lefty. Like if the, if the field, maybe flag football, Olympic LA20, 28.

[AJ Stephens]

There you go.

[Nate Thompson]

Left handed. I'm gonna give it a go.

[AJ Stephens]

I know you gotta run bounty. Any, anything you got to let us know about what's doing here.

[Nate Thompson]

Yeah, you know, football. Wings, Wings, Bounty. Like everybody's getting together on Super Bowl Sunday, like whipping up the chili and the dogs and the, you know, cheese dip and, you know, the blue cheese. What do you need, you know, and what do you need to clean up? You need bounty.

[Kavino]

My mom always, always yelled at me for using too much of the paper towels.

[AJ Stephens]

I wasted them.

[Kavino]

Can I use as many as I want or.

[Nate Thompson]

Yeah, you can use it. I mean, like, don't intentionally make a mess, but like, when you do, you know, we just, we just soak it up with money. Highly absorbent.

Don't bet against Mahomes. But we kept asking, well, how do you stop Barkley? Even the pros didn't have an answer to that because nobody has an answer to that. So until you tell me, you know, there's a way to stop this guy, I don't know how you do it. I think he's the difference.

[AJ Stephens]

All right, well, listen, I. I have the same pick as you, but let me explain, okay? I got the Eagles 31, 26. 31, 26 Eagles. I'm still picking under on Saquon Barkley. Under 110 and a half. I think turnovers will be the difference. The ball always bounces the way of the Kansas City Chiefs. That changes this Sunday. If Tom Brady couldn't do three in a row, Joe Montana got close. Guess what happened in Montana's third try? A fumble against the Giants in 1990, which led them to the Super Bowl. And that was the year The Niners were 14 2. So if Joe Montana, Joe Cool, couldn't do it, Tom Brady couldn't do it. Yo, pump the brakes. I Love Mahomes. Eagles 31, 26. I'm looking for a big game from jalen. Hurts hitting A.J. brown, Devonte Smith, and our dude, Dallas Goddard. I think it's. I think it's gonna be a good one.

I know this week we've heard a lot about the Chiefs defense versus Saquon, but the Key to this game is going to be the Eagles defense, keeping Mahomes on the sideline just long enough to play keep away at the end of the game. In the final minute, the refs help KC get in position for a potential tying field goal. But it bangs off the upright of the Eagles hoist the Lombardi 27 to 24.
