Hey, thanks for listening to the Best of Cavino and Rich podcast. Be sure to catch us live every day from 5 to 7pm Eastern, 2 to 4 Pacific, on Fox Sports Radio.
Covino
Find your local station for Cavino and rich@foxsportsradio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching FSR.
Dan Byer
On this day. Seste Maya, which we've always called it, right?
Covino
Always.
Dan Byer
That's if you're on delay. So two phrases. Tell me what has happened on this day, 1937. All the humanity.
Iowa Sam
We actually have a drop of that. Oh, that's the Hindenburg.
Dan Byer
The Hindenburg.
Iowa Sam
Let me see if we have the. Yeah, here it is.
Covino
Oh, I thought that was when Devin Williams blew the lead again.
Dan Byer
Stop it.
Iowa Sam
Maybe he shouldn't have been allowed to grow a beard.
Dan Byer
I was gonna say it's not. It's not too soon. It was 1937, but do you know that happened in New Jersey? I think a lot of people don't realize that happened in Jersey. All the humanity. I think a lot of people think that happened, like in a foreign country.
Iowa Sam
I think people think it happened in, like, Germany or Austria.
Dan Byer
Yes, that's what I mean.
Danny G
Hungary.
Dan Byer
Or when you realize that, oh, it's in Jersey. Yeah, that happened in Jersey.
Covino
That's like that weird fun fact about the Titanic. Like, it's not that far away. We think it's somewhere in Alaska.
Dan Byer
Titanic. I don't think it's in Alaska.
Iowa Sam
People think it's Newfoundland area.
Covino
People think it's like really far. It's not that far in England to the grand scheme of New York right now.
Dan Byer
The other one, I was Sam.
Austin
Yes.
Dan Byer
Did she get off the plane? I got off the plane 21 years ago today.
Covino
21 years ago today, I was dragged to a stupid party that I wish I never went to.
Dan Byer
52 million people watched it.
Covino
I was one.
Iowa Sam
Get off the plane. I got off the plane.
Dan Byer
She got off the plane.
Iowa Sam
I don't know this what you're alluding to.
Dan Byer
Danny G. Friends. Friends finale.
Iowa Sam
Oh, Yeah.
Dan Byer
I wasn't 52 million people watching Friends guy. And the reason is.
Covino
Yeah, the reason. That's all I remember who was thank had that big song at the time and it was part of the finale.
Dan Byer
Well, I have a theory that if you. If you have clear memories of the finale of Friends, you're probably due for a colonoscopy because that means you're at least 40 something. Because that was 21 years ago. Back in.
Covino
I was dragged to a friend's party with a bunch of people who were big fans. I'm like, this is the big finale you're all hyped about. I had no reference point, so it wasn't that much fun for me.
Dan Byer
You act like that's shocking. You're in your 20s and friends was a big show and you were dating a hot chick. You don't think she watched Friends?
Covino
Yeah, she took me to her cousin's house for a big Friends party. I'm like, this sucks. I feel like Beavis and Butthead. You know this sucks.
Dan Byer
You know, you're like the Mexican roster. Yeah.
Covino
Like, what am I doing here? This is the worst show I've ever seen.
Danny G
You don't have to be old, rich. Our 14 year old a few weeks ago told her mom I found this show streaming. It's called Friends. Really great show.
Covino
I mean, listen, thanks for letting us know about it.
Dan Byer
Not my favorite of all time, but to deny the popularity of that show. And you know what? They were the first to do something pretty cool, which was they were all in it together.
Covino
Right?
Dan Byer
Like they all said, we're going to make the same amount of money, which takes away the drama it does.
Covino
And props to them. I can't believe it's been that long. To be honest. That's a major timestamp. I just didn't watch it growing up. But yeah, of course I acknowledged the popularity. So that was 21 years ago today.
Dan Byer
It's crazy. Yeah, times are flying.
Iowa Sam
Do you know who wrote the theme song?
Dan Byer
The Rembrandts.
Iowa Sam
Was it them?
Covino
Yeah, his name was Hank Rembrandt.
Iowa Sam
Why was I thinking of some group named the Refreshments?
Covino
No, that's another thing. It must be a local band in Iowa.
Dan Byer
You grew up with the look that damn fire gave when you said the refreshments.
Covino
Sam saw them at a carnival in Iowa. The refreshments.
Danny G
This is also the 20 strikeout day game for Kerry Wood.
Austin
Okay, A lot has just happened in this 30 seconds. We announced on the Doug Gottlieb show, I think five days ago that it was the Kerry Wood day. So we've. Yeah, no, you may be right, Danny. I don't know.
Danny G
But it says May 6, 1998.
Austin
I'm just saying. But the funny thing with Iowa Sam is Iowa Sam loves these little tidbits that he throws in. And you weren't sure about Refreshments on this one, but I so wish he would have said, and of course that song played by the Refreshments.
Shaquille O'Neal
No, I wasn't.
Covino
Good.
Iowa Sam
But not my typical smug delivery.
Covino
I know.
Iowa Sam
And I know Rembrandts reflect.
Austin
Sam is the guy you love to hate.
Iowa Sam
Try not to be that guy.
Dan Byer
I love you, Sammy. All right, now listen. Let's get into it. Last night, the NBA talk about two games that look like they were headed in a direction. And both games last night ended up going the other way. If you had turned on that Nick Celtics game midway through the third quarter, you were thinking, all right, this is a clear Celtics game one at home victory. You know, Knicks coming off an emotional series where, you know, they went to game seven and you're like, oh, no, not. Not at all. Boston missed. I believe it was. Danny, check my number. Was it 287? Three pointers? They missed.
Danny G
Yes.
Dan Byer
40 something though, right?
Covino
NBA record, live by the sword, die by the sword sort of thing. They just threw up three pointers and kept missing. That's really it.
Danny G
And they made 16 out of 200 attempts.
Dan Byer
Geez.
Covino
The Knicks capitalized on that.
Dan Byer
And then Jalen Brunson at the end of regulation, he probably thought, oh, I had it and blew it. But he didn't. Went to overtime, Knicks came out on top. And then last night, I had left, I had. I had a late softball game.
Danny G
Oh, really quick though. You got to mention Mikel Bridges because of course, on both sides of the floor ended that game.
Dan Byer
No doubt. Now I'm at the ball field last night, late night game. I hate those 9 o'clock games, you're like, tired and you're like, oh, I got to go have a game now. All the guys are watching on their phone and you're like, oh, you know, this game's out of reach. Look at this game. One OKC one seed, better record than everyone all year round. They're going to win this one. And then slowly but surely, Denver's chipping away, goes on a little bit of a run. And talk about mismanaging the free throw game at the end.
Danny G
Oh, 13.9 seconds left. And they decided, you know what? We'll play the free throw game, the foul game. And it did not work out in their favor as Homegren clank those two. And then of course, the shot over the top of them by Gordon.
Covino
But let's not forget to blow it.
Dan Byer
You blew it.
Covino
Let's not forget too, though. Both teams, Knicks and the Nuggies, stole one away. Stole one away. So those are heartbreakers, hard to recover from.
Dan Byer
Now you got to ask yourself the.
Covino
Question, who blew it?
Dan Byer
Who blew it More, by the way.
Covino
Are you quoting Billy Madison or Robert De Niro in Copland?
Dan Byer
See, I go Madison, I know you go De Niro.
Covino
De Niro says, I gave you a chance to be a real cop, and you blew it. And Stallone is like, yo. Like, absolutely. Why are you yelling at me like, yo, Bobby. Bobby D. Absolutely.
Dan Byer
No, see, I go Billy Madison when Ernie's on the phone with, you know, those are two. Veronica, Veronica Vaughn, you blew it.
Covino
But people forget the cop land line. It's very similar.
Dan Byer
So, I mean, I have my answer, and I'll let you know and you tell me if you agree or not.
Covino
You blew it.
Dan Byer
You blew it. I'm going Sandler. Oh, Billy Nelson, you blew it.
Covino
That's Sandler.
Dan Byer
I think Boston could very well recover. I think the Knicks are a great team. I'm rooting for the Knicks. I think everyone is except Dave Portnoy. Like, unless you're a Celtics fan and you're Die Hard, I think everyone's like, Celtics won last year. They have a dynasty. Over the years, I felt the same.
Covino
Way Danny G felt. He hit us immediately with the text. You know, we're watching the game, but he hit us with, man, they're showing signs of life where it looks like they really could win. They might have that chance to win. And we haven't said that in a long time about the Knicks.
Dan Byer
There's. There's Celtics fans that are still saying, oh, gentleman sweep, where you give the other team One game I and it very well could happen. The Celtics are your defending champions, but our parents grew up with the Celtics dominating. We grew up at a time of Larry Bird, we saw Kevin Garnett. We've seen this team win throughout different stages. The Knicks in our lifetime have never won the Starks and Ewing days. Then you could say Sprewell era. Spreewell error. It just they can never put it together.
Danny G
Then the Carmelo playoff run.
Covino
Oh yeah, that's right, the Carmelo era. Yeah, they had some good squads and he had some fun players to watch. So they gave you some reason to root because they had fun players and you believed in them. But they never amounted really to much.
Dan Byer
So I think that that series is going to go six or seven regardless. I could be totally wrong. I love they, they match up well. I think it's fun to watch. The Knicks are for real. But the Celtics, again defending champions, I think they may look back and that's where the series went wrong. But I think OKC for as dominant as they were, and I know regular season at this point means nothing, but we got to remember they were roughly 20 games better than anyone else. Like it wasn't even close. Like their one seed status. I bet you if you look back over the last 10, 20, 30 years of the NBA, the difference between the one seed and two seed, very rarely is it that steep. Like OKC was they pretty much clinched the one seed like a month ago, two months ago.
Covino
The point too though, we're super pumped about this because there's nothing really like playoff basketball. Like the regular season is just for the most part. And then when you see, see how intense it gets in the playoffs, you're like damn, why don't they play this way throughout the entire season? It's next level excitement. And the analogy goes, if your woman is capable of freaky deaky things in the bedroom, but she reserves it for holidays and your birthday and things like that, special occasions. It makes you think, well if you're capable of this, why not all the.
Dan Byer
Time, what do you do? They're naked, hanging from the chandelier. And man, the stuff you do on.
Covino
Vacation, honey, that's how the NBA playoffs makes you feel. It's like if the NBA is capable of this, and I understand they have to tiptoe around and not get hurt throughout the regular season.
Dan Byer
Oh, is load management, your kids getting in the way.
Covino
That's just such a major contrast from playoffs to regular season. So of course you're pulled in and excited about it. It's the time to tune in, guys. These games are insanely intense.
Dan Byer
I've always said that the NBA playoffs are like hotel sex. I've said it my whole life, but it really is, like, amped up to a new level.
Covino
That's it, really. NBA playoffs are like hotel sex. You nailed it.
Dan Byer
And you wonder, why can't it be like this all the time?
Covino
Yeah. Like vacation sex.
Dan Byer
Geez. Now. Now I'm thinking dirty thoughts and how much I love the NBA playoffs.
Covino
Because don't tell me you don't think. Why can't every day be like that?
Dan Byer
Oh, look at you. Prime to go.
Covino
No, I'm just saying that's how you feel. You're sitting there because don't tell me you're not watching these games. Like, if the games were this exciting all throughout the season, you'd be a hell of a bigger NBA fan. We'd be talking about it every day. And that's how it's been pretty much our whole life. Let's say it's nothing like NBA playoffs.
Dan Byer
The playoffs, like I said. Why is hotel sex like the NBA playoffs? Because there's preparation that goes into it. What happens? You're going to Hawaii for a week. Your wife's at the spa getting a waxing. You're gearing up for it. I think the teams have geared up for this moment, and here we are. They're going all out, holding back nothing.
Covino
But it's so evident, man. So evident.
Dan Byer
They're. They're doing whatever it takes.
Covino
Yeah.
Dan Byer
Now I think OKC back to them. 20 games better than everyone else. It was a joke how good they were in the regular season, but seems like an easy argument to make, so.
Covino
But again, a young team. They're playing a team with. With playoff swag and experience.
Dan Byer
Yeah, you took the words out of my mouth. I think it's. It's easy. It's an easy argument to say best team, but young team. So when you lose Game 1 to the team that won the NBA title two years ago with your possible.
Covino
You know what I call that?
Dan Byer
Mvp? Jokic. Now, Jokic, SGA are arguably your two best players.
Covino
I call that a molaram. You know why?
Shaquille O'Neal
Oh, why?
Covino
Because the Nuggets took their heart out. Kalima.
Shaquille O'Neal
Kalima.
Covino
They took the heart out of this young team yesterday. That's how I feel about it. Could they turn it around? Be fun to see, but to me, that's a heart ripper.
Danny G
It was the mismanagement of the clock. Right, Rich? That. I mean, has the Thunder winning this bad Competition.
Dan Byer
When you, when you blow a game one and you can think of many series in the past where one team had game one sort of not in the bag but under, you know, under control. And then they let it slip away, and that could really change the series. I remember there was one NBA Finals where LeBron and the Cavs had Game 1 when LeBron was with the Cavs, they had Game 1 under control and they let it slip away to Golden State. One of the many years they lost to the warriors in the playoffs, in the finals. But game one on the road, picking up a W against okc, that's got to give Jokic and his, you know, team and of course, confidence in their coaches.
Covino
How about that look with Westbrook hitting Gordon with the Open 3. And you take that every time, as he said at the end of the game, like when you got that open shot, you take it and he made it coming in clutch. You got to give props to that. Again, that all comes with the composure and excitement experience of being there before. And the Thunder again have their back against the wall saying, home num Shabbat humdum shabbat Shabbat. And you got Aaron Gordon and Jokic being like, got him. So it was heartbreaking. Heart ripped out yesterday, but, man, we reaped all the benefits because that was fun to watch. As again, a fan with no horse in the race. That's just great basketball.
Dan Byer
Yeah. So, hey, your thoughts said 87799 on Fox, if you had to say who blew it?
Covino
Which goes to show you with all the criticism, NBA still got it. You know, we spent a lot of the year like, man, what's going on at the NBA? We've been. We always do that.
Dan Byer
Yeah.
Covino
But when it comes playoff time, so exciting.
Dan Byer
Yeah.
Covino
And I know, Rich, you were making that case, you know, on our patreon about hockey as well, but, man, some great, great games yesterday.
Dan Byer
Then again, we'll take your feedback.
Covino
So is your question who blew it more, the Celtics or the Thunder? Man, that's a good one. I'd have to say the Thunder because more on. On the line and at stake for them to come back. When the Celtics have that experience and have that confidence and inner belief of we've been there before and we got this and we're the champs. I think more for them, more props to them. I think the Thunder in a tougher spot.
Dan Byer
It's almost like, like a mulligan. Like Celtics have been there. Like, we'll start over fresh now.
Covino
So I'm going to say My answer to Thunder blew it more.
Dan Byer
And the Thunder haven't been this confident and you know, projected to be this good.
Austin
The Thunder also were in position to win. Like the Knicks had a chance at the regulate at the end of regulation with a shot to win that Brunson's just didn't go down. Granted the Celtics missed a shot prior but Knicks could have got the ball back. But it seemed the Thunder in prime spot and let the Nuggets hang around a little bit more than they should. Made some bad decisions in the final seconds and it come back, comes back to bite him.
Dan Byer
You know, for, you know, for SiriusXM. Cavino and I do some music stuff over there. He's on the rock channels, I'm on the pop channels. And not to break the glass once in a while I record stuff early, you know, for the next day if I, if I'm busy. And I had to go back and change things because when that game before I left for softball last night, late night, I'm like a 10 point lead.
Covino
Second half, you took a chance.
Dan Byer
I did the old hey and congrats last night.
Covino
Counting chickens, you know, congrats to the.
Dan Byer
Knicks and congrats to the, the Thunder. And then I had to go back and be like, oh, let me change that. Wow, I think we've all done that in broadcast.
Covino
I think you also have to give props to not only, you know, Aaron Gordon and Murray and the usual suspects, Jokic, but Russell Westbrook's energy throughout this run has been really contagious too. I think he's playing with a lot of contagious energy, keeping the team hype, making great decisions. We saw that last night. It just again, it's just something I'm noticing playing with a next level intensity.
Austin
I also do want to say Danny G. Is right, that it happened the Kerry Wood game. It did happen. How many years ago?
Danny G
1998.
Austin
19. 27 years ago today. J stuff qualified it as saying that when he brought it up last week he was saying this was the week that the Kerry Wood game happened anniversary. So do you guys don't have an eight years ago today?
Dan Byer
Eight years would be 2017.
Austin
Yeah.
Covino
On this day, sports or pop culture related?
Austin
Like neither. Iowa. Sam, do you know eight?
Iowa Sam
No.
Austin
Yeah. Well, it's my anniversary, I got married.
Covino
Eight years ago today anniversary.
Dan Byer
Happy anniversary. I heard you. Your wedding band, the refreshments.
Covino
They were delicious.
Dan Byer
They're great. They're great.
Austin
Thanks for getting. Thanks for forgetting Sam.
Iowa Sam
That was one thing. Dan just told me this like within the hour I said, oh, how many years are you celebrating? Eight years. And I flopped on that. I looked up the refreshments. They wrote this song called Yahoos and Triangles, which is the theme song to King of the Hill. So it was two. It was two bands that started with re two 90s shows. And I just got him confused.
Dan Byer
But let's not overlook what Dan Byer just said. Not about. Not about the Thunder, not about the Celtics. We wouldn't know it was DB's anniversary, but that was just to prove that I was. Sam didn't care or listen to something he said within the last.
Austin
I asked 100%.
Iowa Sam
Dan, how many. How many years? You said eight, and then I just forgot. It just went out one ear in one year, out the other.
Austin
Did not care.
Iowa Sam
I did care.
Covino
Happy anniversary, though, dude.
Austin
Thank you very much.
Covino
That is pretty cool, man. Eight years ago today. Any big plans? Some hibachi tonight or leftover tacos?
Austin
I said, I go. We're going to get. We're going to go to a hibachi or we're going to watch a Rocky marathon.
Dan Byer
Yeah. That's the two things he's ever done.
Covino
I love it.
Dan Byer
I love that. Db. Enjoy your anniversary.
Austin
Thank you, guys.
Dan Byer
It's like the NBA playoffs. We like your anniversary. Have fun.
Covino
You know what that means. Dan's having some fun tonight.
Dan Byer
I know. Have fun, DB.
Covino
Respectfully, DB.
Dan Byer
I know you're a big Caitlyn Clark fan. Iowa. Sam.
Iowa Sam
You betcha.
Dan Byer
Today's Angel. Reese's 23rd birthday.
Iowa Sam
Congrats.
Dan Byer
So, her nemesis.
Covino
What'd you get her?
Dan Byer
Reese's puffs. Do you see her on the cereal in the supermarket? That's a pretty cool endorsement.
Covino
I'm a peanut butter crunch guy. Sorry.
Dan Byer
I wanted to bring something up before we get to your phone calls on who blew it. You blew it.
Covino
I gave you a chance to beat the Nuggets, and you blew it again.
Dan Byer
I'm going sandler.
Covino
That's my De Niro. You like that?
Dan Byer
Celtics or okc? We'll take your feedback, but I want to say there's a viral clip going around today. And.
Covino
Oh, the crabs in the air fryer.
Dan Byer
No, but that's weird. I did see that.
Covino
Crabs in the air. Live crabs in the air fryer. Sweep in the nation.
Dan Byer
People think they're crying, but they're not. They don't have vocal cords. But it looks like these crabs are like.
Covino
Oh, it still seems extra cruel for whatever reason.
Dan Byer
I mean, throw.
Covino
Oh, I know. Is it. How many don zimmers can. 100 don zimmers beat one Pedro Martinez?
Iowa Sam
I do love that.
Dan Byer
That's my favorite new hypothetical. How many? Yeah, could 100 zimmers versus one Pedro?
Covino
I got it broken down for you. Can 100 don zimmers beat one Pedro Martinez? Because don Zimmer was 72 at the time, which put it in perspective. That's like our dad's age now.
Dan Byer
He looked way old, right?
Covino
And Pedro was 31 in 2003. So could one 72 year old Don Zimmers beat one 31 healthy Jheri curl. Having Pedro Martinez in his prime, I'm.
Dan Byer
Going to say I'm taking the Zimmers.
Covino
Especially if he's wearing those army helmets. Remember Don Zimmer with the army helmet in the dugout?
Danny G
He's kind of like a rhino.
Dan Byer
I think it would take 15 zimmers to beat up a Pedro.
Covino
Me too. Yeah.
Danny G
Okay, I have a new one for you guys. I came up with this one. Could 100 Robin Venturas beat one Nolan Ryan?
Dan Byer
Oh, no.
Covino
Yeah, yeah.
Dan Byer
I think you need like three of them. Three of them? No. I was going to say a viral video today, and it's the ultimate in, as they say, f around and find out.
Covino
Oh, boy.
Dan Byer
At the Pirates game. And again, all this is a legend and what we're just seeing from a YouTube clip. So what do we know? The real story. But apparently some fan was, you know, annoying some female fans. The usher steps in and they take it to the concourse, and this fan, bearded dude spits in this guy's face.
Covino
Ooh, ultimate insult.
Dan Byer
Keeps spitting.
Covino
Wow.
Dan Byer
This dude working at the stadium has the look on his face like, yo, I've had enough.
Covino
Yeah. I mean, that's. I mean, what's more insulting than that?
Dan Byer
Not only does he go to punch this guy and punch him, stands up, you know, he's in his, takes his belt out and he's like, yeah, mother. It starts whipping the guy. This guy's been suspended from PNC and the Pirates. But I'll tell you what, man. If you're working at a stadium, probably not making the greatest wage, and someone thinks they could spit at you, I think that's worthy. I think it's worthy to lose your cool.
Covino
I'd say he was pretty kind busting out the belt. And I think that's kind of funny, actually.
Dan Byer
Guy whooped his ass with the fan.
Iowa Sam
Needed specifically, who got PNC suspended the employee.
Dan Byer
But you know what, Sam? A lot of times people think because someone works somewhere, they could do whatever they want. Let me tell you a quick story. I was working in New York City and behind the counter was some, like, young hustling Latino kid.
Covino
And was this when you worked at the sex shop? Sex shop where? In New York City?
Dan Byer
This is in midtown. This had a little deli, a little.
Covino
Place you weren't working, you're just there?
Dan Byer
Yeah, I'm going to get a little muffin and a coffee. And the guy behind the counter, young kid on his hustle, some douchey corporate banker guy, is like, my muffin and coffee, please. And he starts mouthing off to this kid. And this kid eventually was like, yo, man, you can't talk to me like that. He hops over the counter, rips off his little pastry shirt. He had. He had a tank top on and he was all tatted up. He's like, yo, man, let's go.
Covino
Respectfully, my guy, let's go.
Dan Byer
And I remember thinking like, yeah, just because someone's on the other side of the counter, people are so bold and.
Covino
They think, especially when they don't care about their jobs part time nonsense.
Dan Byer
Yo, this guy's like, yo, you think I care about this job?
Covino
And I got to let you disrespect my mama for a part time job?
Dan Byer
And all I kept thinking was like, I got a front row seat. I just watched.
Covino
Dude, I used to sit at a broadcast booth at every live show. Broadcast.
Dan Byer
Did you remember I told you the payoff to that story, though?
Covino
The.
Dan Byer
The douchey corporate guy backed down and he's like, well, you're lucky. I got to go. I have a very important meeting. And he ran away, and he ran.
Covino
Away with very important people.
Dan Byer
I have an important meeting with very important people.
Covino
So, yeah, he straightened up real quick.
Dan Byer
But yo, we forget sometimes they did.
Covino
The beat it dance when they weren't really fighting, they were just like sort of dancing around.
Dan Byer
Danny, you've noticed that, right? Like, sometimes people talk to an employee as if, like, so little respect.
Danny G
We've all seen the viral clips of McDonald's. Some McDonald's employees jumping over to the other side of the counter.
Covino
Yeah, people don't care. They think because you're behind a counter that they could say what they want. As if you can't reach over and punch them in the nose. Again, you're risking your job. But again, I'd be at a live broadcast. I don't know, I'd be at corn at Madison Square Garden, and there would be fans coming up to like, you guys suck.
Dan Byer
Your radio station sucks.
Covino
And they would take all their anger out on me. I'M just sitting there, like at a broadcast. You don't know how many times I just wanted to step over and karate kick them. But my job was too important. I looked at it like a career.
Dan Byer
I know there's rules of what we could say and can say on Fox Sports Radio.
Covino
Say what they want. I.
Dan Byer
But I will say this. Sam, get the finger on the button in case I say something, because I know there's rules about bathroom stuff. Covino has a story where some disgruntled rock fan was like, k Rock sellout. You're mainstream. The guy climbed on top of Covino's KROC van, pulled down his pants on the hood of the car.
Covino
On the car.
Shaquille O'Neal
Yeah.
Danny G
He said they were the number two station in town.
Dan Byer
Yes, the number two station. Yeah.
Covino
Because a lot of those college stations in New Jersey is wsou. They have their metal fans that looked at, like, terrestrial commercial radio as like, you guys suck.
Dan Byer
But it's wild to think that because someone's working, there's an odd feeling like you could be terribly rude to them.
Austin
I thought that guy worked at krap.
Covino
I'm not sure that's a good one.
Austin
I like.
Covino
Was that woman from Delco, actually, I don't know if you saw that.
Dan Byer
Yeah.
Covino
Damn.
Dan Byer
By. That's a good Miley.
Covino
That was really.
Dan Byer
Yeah. With that damn buyer. Let's get to your update, guys.
Austin
It's been a crazy afternoon in the Champions League semifinal between Barcelona and Inter Milan. Right now, they are in extra time and in stoppage time. In extra time. So 120 minutes have gone by. Inter Milan lead 76 on aggregate. They lead this second leg 4 3. But just two minutes of extra time. So Barcelona time running out for them. Inter Milan, oh, so close to advancing to the Champions League final.

The Knicks came all the way back against the Celtics. Mikel Bridges finished off Boston on both sides of the court. Hit it. Sam White has the ball, holds it.
Dan Byer
High, throws it to Brown. Left wing stripped by Bridges, hangs onto it, took it away, throws it down court. And the New York Knicks stun the Celtics. 108. 105. The Final the Knicks save their biggest comeback of the season for the biggest.
Covino
Win of the year. Damn.
Dan Byer
For over 40 years, Tire Rack has been helping customers find the right tires for how, what and where they drive. And by the way, that's courtesy of Knicks Radio network, your tire act play of the day.
Covino
So hope you had a New York Knicks nuggies sort of night. And thank you guys for hanging out with us on this Seiste Mayo as we get ready for Shaq Diesel trivia. Next hour, your chance to win a Swiggy, the coveted Swiggy, by answering some multiple choice questions. But any final thoughts on who blew it?
Dan Byer
Rich, who blew it?
Covino
I gave you my answer. I feel like you didn't give your answer. You posed questions.
Dan Byer
Oh, I gave the answer, dummy. I said OKC blew it because I.
Covino
Thought you were saying. Okay, see, I didn't know. I thought you kicked into old school gangster.
Dan Byer
I'm sorry if you thought I was pretending to be a gangster from the 1920s, my apologies.
Covino
That's.
Dan Byer
My answer is okay. See, it's because with SGA and that, you know, they're younger than the Nugget, so there's a part of me that thinks you're. Just because you're a superstar athlete does not mean you're immune to subconscious pressure. Yeah, we agree. You know, you might have been 20 games better than everyone in the regular season. And SGA is arguably your MVP. Him or YIC. Right.
Covino
So what do you think about what Dan Patrick was talking about today? About guys like Aaron Gordon being in the hall of Good. The hall of Very Good. Not a Hall of Famer, but like moments like he had last night put him in the hall of Very Good. He's a champion. He's had some clutch shots.
Dan Byer
You and I invented this. So as much as I love Dan Patrick, in fact he's, you know, one of the guys we look up to very much. But you and I for years have been saying every sports hall of Fame.
Covino
That'S a very Rocky Balboa statement. He's like one of the guys we look up to very much.
Dan Byer
I look up to him very much.
Covino
I look up to very much.
Dan Byer
I think for years, for years. I know we're not alone, but you and I have been saying that every hall of Fame, music, sports, anything should have a wing where it's not necessarily dedicated to the greatest, but sometimes the greatest moments. Like in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame, like there should be a one hit wonder section in the, in the world of sports, there should be a section where it's like, yo, this play meant so much like a tyree.
Covino
It's a Hall of Fame moment. Like David not a Hall of Fame player, but that moment is a Hall of Fame moment. So yeah, the hall of moments, it should be a wing. I agree. And Gordon has a few of those.
Dan Byer
Yeah, there's big game players and I, you know, since I'm the number one coach here in Fox Sports Radio, I talk to my kids about, I talk to my kids about being big game players because we started doing, you know, our playoffs for the girls softball. My daughter and I'm like, yeah, girls in baseball, in women's basketball, basketball for men. You know, there's something as a big game player where in games like this, you step it up because you see it.
Covino
I love to thrive under the bright lights in those pressure moments, the big shot Bobbies of the world. I mean, to me it just says so much about who you are to be able to step up when it counts. I mean, to perform well when it doesn't matter. Yeah, good for you. But it's a next level accomplishment when it matters.
Dan Byer
Now, I wanted to, I wanted to bring up one thing and then I know we're going to talk about times you covered for someone in a big spot. There's a couple stories, but Covino, I think I told you this once before. Is it okay to teach little kids to play angry in today's world?
Covino
I don't know these weenie parents.
Dan Byer
Today I decided my son yesterday, we're doing a little batting practice.
Covino
I say yes, but I'd say be careful.
Dan Byer
So I'm trying. I think I'll tell you what, I did pass along a little info to some of the other parents coaching. So I realized my son got really mad at my daughter. He picked up a baseball and threw it to me. With the speed and intensity. He's never thrown a baseball before.
Covino
Yeah, play mad.
Dan Byer
I go do that again. That's why I'm mad. I go throw mad. I go, pick up every ball there and throw it to me mad. Yo, dude, he threw it twice as far as he does when he's playing around in T ball. And I go, yo, show me a mad swing. He takes a bet.
Covino
He's like, ah, isn't this the teaching methods of Coach Klein from the waterboy? I think you're an original. Didn't he tell, didn't he tell the water, Bobby Boucher, the water stinks. Yeah, yeah.
Dan Byer
Like you're acting.
Iowa Sam
Water sucks.
Covino
Yeah. This guy's trying to sell Coach Klein's playbook. That's happened already.
Dan Byer
So wait.
Iowa Sam
I hate him. I hate him. I hate him.
Dan Byer
You're telling me that I'm taking a page out of our buddy Henry Winkler's playbook. Oh, there.
Covino
Sucks.
Iowa Sam
I see Iowa Hawkeyes in the field too. All Henry Winkler's head with the Iowa.
Covino
Uniforms, you know, best part of the movie. And he thinks he invented it.
Dan Byer
I thought I did. I guess not. But I'm angry. What I told my son was. And I'm gonna tell the other boys on my team, on my kids T ball team.
Covino
Does that make your son Bobby Buet?
Dan Byer
Yeah, my. So I, I told him, I go, I, I always, I go, give me a hul. I go, who's angry? He goes, the Hulk. I go, all right. Hulk throw. Incredible Hulk.
Iowa Sam
So tackling fuel.
Dan Byer
You don't realize sometimes that kids, kids are half assing it until you tell them like, come on.
Covino
I like that. Yeah. They don't understand the word hustle or intensity. They understand that.
Dan Byer
More cnr. Next. Jinx. There is one though, I want to recommend to all the sports fans out there and Dan Byer, I feel like this would be right up your alley. Danny G. You're men of history. You're men of knowledge. Maybe you too. I would say now it's the mega brands. Ooh, yeah. Mega brands. The mega brands that built America. And there's an episode all about Spalding and Wilson and dude, you don't realize how innovative some of these men were in the early part of the 20th century, the late 19th century, where, you know, people were playing baseball and every game in every league had a different ball, a different size, a different weight.
Covino
They were playing bare handed. It was a weakness. Like you were a weenie if you wore a glove.
Dan Byer
And then Spalding.
Covino
Yeah.
Dan Byer
Spalding was so respected as a Great athlete that he came out there wearing gloves, and people were like, well, if Spalding, it would be like if Ohtani came out wearing, you know, something people may say, well, if he does, it's.
Covino
Like when Ernie peed his pants. Remember that?
Dan Byer
And Billy's like, if peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis. Yeah, same thing.
Covino
It's like that because it was cool immediately once it happened. And Spalding, he was that good.
Dan Byer
I don't want to give away the whole documentary, but Spalding then wore two, like, almost driving gloves that turned into one with bigger fingers. And then who decided to connect the fingers of the glove and make a pocket of a baseball glove? I don't know. These two brothers, the Rawlings brothers. So, honestly, if you're a sports fan, this is right up your alley. And Wilson's involved.
Covino
Yeah, Enrique. Enrique Wilson. Right.
Dan Byer
Oh, no, not in. Right.
Covino
Former utility infielder. He invented it.
Dan Byer
I'm sorry, Wilson.
Shaquille O'Neal
Wilson.
Dan Byer
I'm sorry, Wilson. A meat factory who was trying to figure out what to do with other parts of the animal or maybe leather sporting goods. And let's just say the NFL and the then AFL were using a rugby ball. And Wilson's like, listen, I can make you throw this thing better. I could reshape it. Trust me. I'm Wilson. And to this day, the Duke. The Wilson football is the official NFL football. I only gave a couple fun facts. I promise. It's an hour of cool documentary knowledge. And that's the, I believe, mega brands that built America.
Shaquille O'Neal
It is.
Covino
It's a great series. I love the reenactments. I love all those shows. The blank that built America. They're all great. The foods that built America. But Richard's right. The mega brands one, the one about sporting equipment.
Dan Byer
No, I watched the nacho. I watched the nacho.
Covino
The nacho libre one.
Dan Byer
No, I watched the tostito paste salsa one once, and I thought that was fascinating because you realize that, you know, a lot of white guys like me, hot sauce was not a thing. And when they made salsa, they're like, all right, we need to make it bland. And like. Yeah, but bland sounds like a negative word.
Covino
American taste buds were not ready for that. And now we're accustomed. We're used to it. So, yeah, they had a. They had to prepare the bland taste buds for what we love today.
Dan Byer
So think about that. Mild was the word they came up with because they couldn't say Americans were allergic to spicy. Well, they couldn't be like, let's make it bland for the White guys. So they're like we. Mild.
Shaquille O'Neal
Mild.
Dan Byer
There you go. So these are all great.
Covino
That's the mild Rich Davis, I would say.
Dan Byer
I mean, you got to watch these things.
Covino
I can't say basic or bland, but there he is. The mild Rich day.
Austin
I'm sorry I missed the network or streaming service. What was it?
Dan Byer
History Chat. Okay.
Austin
Okay.
Dan Byer
So if you got Hulu. I feel like I just look on Hulu like on demand.
Covino
And they're all so good. He's not lying. The blank that built America. They're all great.
Dan Byer
And it's no commercial. I mean, I watch a bunch of dumb stuff on every streaming service, but if you just want something light in the background, learn a little something.
Iowa Sam
So you're saying you're Mile Davis. Like, if you're that. If that's what's cool. Consider me Mild Davis.
Dan Byer
Mild Davis.
Covino
Mild Davis. Good one. I like that one, Sam. I like it. So we're Cavino and Rich. We're going to play some games this hour again, give away prizes. Like we said, Shaq Diesel, Trivia. Doing that to get you fired up for the NBA playoffs, but something we've been meaning to get to, and it feels like these stories keep piling up in the past few weeks, so perfect timing. Now, covering for somebody in a big moment. Do you have a story of your own? I'd love to hear about it. Did you. Wally Pip, the person. I want to hear. I want to know the story. Did you. Drew Bledsoe. The moment. Did you step up? And Tom Brady. The moment. Would it be a Tom Brady? No, it'd be. Yeah, Drew Bledsoe.
Dan Byer
Well, here's the thing. If they always called it a Wally Pip, wouldn't it be a Drew Bledsoe?
Covino
And it would be a Drew Bledsoe.
Danny G
Yeah.
Covino
So the times you had a cover for somebody in a big moment, because these are frantic situations, but could redefine who you are and could be a big moment for you, depending on the story and the moment. Right. Most recently, Dennis Scott, because of technical difficulties, had a cover for Spiro Deeds and Candace Parker. So they were having. And he's what, like a color commentator?
Danny G
Yeah, he's usually down courtside, sideline.
Covino
Dude. And they were having technical difficulties, so he had to do the play by play.
Danny G
Yeah.
Covino
And step up.
Danny G
The main booth was cut off.
Covino
And by the way, you may think, oh, he's a broadcaster and he's. He's polished enough. Former player. But I'll tell you what, these are separate skills, guys. It's like it's like asking an outfielder to play second base. You know what I mean? Like, it's just not something that you do. Rich and I are on the air every day just for fun. One time we tried to do baseball play by play and we could pretend all day and we watch baseball all day.
Dan Byer
It's not easy.
Covino
It's not easy to do that if that's not your skill. It's like us trying to do what Dan Byard does as an anchor, you know, that's not something that we do. It's a different skill set.
Danny G
Yeah, he had to start reading off the teleprompter and then he jumped into the play by play.
Covino
Dude, that's scary. Especially when you're not used to that. And we've seen so many moments. Right.
Dan Byer
If I did Dan's job, I'd start it every time by going, it's update time. I'd have a whole gimmick.
Austin
The start is the easy part. The ending is the.
Dan Byer
You got to time it out.
Danny G
I feel like at the end Rich would go, woo.
Dan Byer
I'd go, shazami.
Covino
That music would make me.
Dan Byer
Dan Byer goes, I'm Dan Byer. Dun, dun, dun, dun. Like. And that hits perfectly. That's a skill, right?
Shaquille O'Neal
It is.
Covino
It's different skill. So you may think to yourself, like, yeah, big deal. He had to do the play by play. He's a basketball guy. If that's not what you do and if you've never done it on a big stage like that, you know, that's like you again, playing a position or doing something you've never done before. Like, oh, man. So Dennis Scott stepped up for Spiral DD's. Candace Parker Tech difficulties in an NBA playoff game. Big moment. Now, just this weekend, Kentucky Derby, Mike Tirico apparently had a peanut allergy.
Danny G
Yeah. Bad reaction to it.
Covino
And I don't know, that could be severe. I don't know how bad it was. But because of that, Ahmed Farid had to step in.
Danny G
Tamiko tweeted that he was okay. He lived through it, but he said he was grateful to the broadcast team for stepping up for him.
Covino
So think about that. You know, these are great opportunities. Unfortunate for them, but opportunities are knocking for these other people. And I think everybody has a moment or could think of a sports moment maybe where, hey, that guy wasn't ready, but he had to get in there and do his thing and he had to step up. And you know what? It was a big moment for that guy. My career, I have a stupid, stupid story, but it Gave me the chops and understanding of, okay, well, I guess I could do this. Coming up in radio. I remember I was at Jones Beach, New York, Great concert venue, outdoor venue. And it was for, I don't know, like a. This big festival concert that KROC New York was broadcasting from. Right. And this sounds stupid now, but back then it was a big deal. Booker, who's an iHeartRadio host, Chris Booker, was supposed to interview Collective Soul. So this is like the late 1900s, right? But again, Collective Soul, not the biggest band in the world.
Dan Byer
But after Shine. Shine is a good song.
Danny G
Love that song.
Covino
Are you kidding me? The world I know make you cry, right?
Dan Byer
December, hit me up with some Collective Soul.
Covino
I would say in my hand, contagious as you think I am, right? So they had a bunch of hits. Heavy, let's Gel. So. But Shine is a good one. And for whatever reason, Chris Booker is stuck in traffic. And I'm like, oh, man, I was the only idiot there. First to be there, last to leave when you're coming up, right? That's just the role you played. I'm hanging up banners. The only guy there, boss, is like, yeah, this is your time. Stay. You gotta interview Collective Soul. I mean, again, looking back as Collective Soul, whatever, we've done this a million times. But when I'm a young kid and I'm buying their CDs, they're the biggest thing in the world to me. Right? It's the world I know. And I'm like, oh, man, I remember just being so nervous, but I had to do it. I had to step up and fill in for Booker. And it was just on those recording. It wasn't a live broadcast, but I had to step up with the Marantz system, as Danny G probably remembers. You remember those, like, handheld recording devices, and you had to be so careful and certain that you were recording it and the levels were right and just pray that it came out okay. And I'm recording. And I did that interview with Collective Soul, and I was just like, barely 20, man, if that. And I just remember at the time, I had to step up because he was late or didn't show up or was sick or whatever the case was. And for me at the time, it showed that I'll step up if needed and I could handle these things. I mean, I sucked, but I still did it. And it showed me that, yeah, man, maybe I can do this in the future, who knows?
Dan Byer
And that's happened twice in the broadcasting world in the last week. So just in the Last week. So just coincidentally, you know, those times you covered and, you know, maybe got an opportunity. I have an example for, like, every part of life.
Covino
It happened to me in sports, too. I got more stories.
Dan Byer
I have a sports example because he's a Cy Young Award winner, a guy that we think of as one of the most dominant pitchers of our generation. Jacob deGrom got called up as a spot starter. He was a minor league shortstop who was transitioning to pitcher. Yeah. And you think about, if deGrom has a bad start, what do they do? Yeah, go back to the minors and see what happens. Jacob deGrom took that and ran with it and became a generational pitcher.
Covino
Yeah. Again, that's stepping up in the moment, you know, taking that moment. And that's what we're talking about. The times you had a cover for somebody.
Dan Byer
How about this one?
Covino
It could have been a nightmare, too. So it doesn't matter.
Dan Byer
Let's go back roughly, you know, 40 to 50 years. LA Lakers. Jack McKinney gets in a bicycle crash. We saw it on Winning Time.
Danny G
Yeah.
Dan Byer
Pat Riley was, you know, a young, hungry assistant that gave Pat Riley his way in the door and never looked back. In fact, the team was then given to him.
Covino
You have a personal story, Rich?
Dan Byer
I do, but it's a really corny one, though.
Covino
I want to hear it.
Dan Byer
That's.
Covino
I mean, you're the corniest guy I know. Sun Brand, as far as I'm concerned. Let's hear it.
Dan Byer
All right. Well, it's a really corny example, guys. For real. Like, corny. Like it makes sense because it reminded me that I don't really. I don't get scared at broadcast or anything like that.
Covino
I don't think, like, my collective soul story was the coolest.
Dan Byer
Well, compared to this story.
Covino
No, I can't wait. Let's hear it.
Dan Byer
So I was in a school play my senior year.
Danny G
Why are you laughing at the start of the story?
Covino
Because he's probably like the fill in for Little Orphan Annie. That's when Rich sang Tomorrow and everybody cried. They gave him a standing O. And the rest is history.
Dan Byer
No, the. The night of the performance for me. So it's a corny play, too. Anything Goes.
Covino
Okay.
Dan Byer
I was in the Broadway show Anything Goes.
Covino
Yeah.
Dan Byer
As a senior in high school.
Covino
Okay.
Dan Byer
And the girl that was the opposite lead of me, I was the lead guy. She was the, you know, the actress. She had like a laryngitis anxiety attack combination. Where in concert, we had a duet. And as corny as is, like, I would Sing a line. She would sing a line. I would sing a line. She would sing along. And that was like the. That was like the main song in Anything Goes. She gives me a look like my voice is gone.
Covino
So right there on the side.
Dan Byer
So instinctively I look down and, you know, like the pit conductor for the band.
Covino
Yeah.
Dan Byer
Looks up at me and just points at me. And for the rest of the song, I sang my part and her part and made it seem like it was just my song. And at that moment, I'm like, I think I could be a professional broadcaster. Wow.
Covino
And then for the following show, for the encore later on, Rich painted one side like a woman and he would just flip sides again. He won a high school acting award as well.
Dan Byer
That was. Yeah.
Covino
Wow, dude. That's a pretty cool story, though, because that happened, like, live in the moment. She's like, I can't sing.
Dan Byer
She tried to get the first line.
Covino
That is.
Dan Byer
Yeah.
Covino
That's a matter of nerves.
Dan Byer
And.
Covino
Yeah.
Dan Byer
And I was just like, all right. And I just started singing her words.
Covino
You stepped up. You know, Again, you see this in real sports all the time. In real life all the time. We have two stories in the past few weeks that we're sharing with you. Times you had to step up in those moments, and, you know, they're nerve wracking. Sometimes you deliver, sometimes you don't. But if you don't, were you really expected to anyway? Right. So it might be a little embarrassing. You know, it wasn't on you.
Dan Byer
I have a good fictional one, but it's. It's a great example of this.
Covino
I actually liked your story, by the way. It's just corny. Cause, yeah, it's high school. I got a high school one, too.
Dan Byer
We all watched. I mean, I don't know if you did. We talked about friends earlier. How I met your mother was one of my favorite shows in the 2000s. And there's an episode where Robin Chabotsky, played by Colby Smulders. Robin is a news anchor on the local, like, Channel one local news. It was a big New Year's Eve event. And that, you know, the funny guy that's like the sexual harassing boss. She had Sandy Rivers on New Year's Eve, the big ball drop broadcast. He dips away to get with some woman. And like, someone's on in five, four, three. And she grabbed the mic and that was like her big break.
Covino
Ah.
Dan Byer
So it's like, you know, a lot of times, you know, you gotta take that moment and run with it a la Tom Brady.
Covino
A la, you know, Wally, Lou Gehrig.
Dan Byer
Lou Gehrig, Allah, me and the Broadway show.
Covino
No, these are, these are all great moments in big stories.
Dan Byer
Jake deGrom. I mean, how many times do you see, dude, we're talking about him during the commercial break in the hallway. Me and big Brandon here, both Niners fans. Brock Purdy could very well be a backup quarterback. Maybe not even the league. Making 7, $800,000 as a backup, maybe a million. Jimmy G goes down before that. Trey Lance doesn't work out. Brock Purdy seized his moment more than anyone else I could even think of in the last five years. The guy's going to end up making over $50 million a year because he was given an opportunity and he was ready.
Covino
That's pretty great. Yeah, he might be like the greatest answer of that since Tom Brady. I know that sounds crazy because he hasn't accomplished that much, but. But Rich is right. He would have been just a regular quarterback. Mr. No one talked about irrelevant man. Barely getting by, forgot.
Dan Byer
He would have been a forgotten backup. We're talking about Chador Sanders in the fifth round. Everyone's like, oh my God, Brock Purdy was the last chosen in the draft. Last person chosen, like, all right, and the draft is wrapping up. Who's funny? Mr. Irrelevant. Brock Purdy. He didn't think it was that funny. He got a chance and you know what he was probably thinking? He had faith in himself and said, if I ever get a chance, man, I'm going to show them what I got. Even in. As you said, they would always talk about in practice, guys like Fred Warner and respected defenders would say, when this kid gets a chance, you see he wants it.
Covino
There was an American Leg Legion championship game I was in and it was from 13 to 16. The team I was on and the 16 year old, all state, all American, I'm not exaggerating, like all American Allstate athlete that I played with.
Dan Byer
You're probably on the 13 year old team as a 16 year old. You're like Daniel Monte.
Covino
Yeah, no, I was, I was 13, right, and the guy pitching the championship game was the guy you had all the confidence in the world in. Like, oh man, he's, he's pitching. He's no longer alive, unfortunately, you know, but shout out to him. But he's pitching the championship game and he comes out in like the second inning with like elbow flare up. It's like the. No, it was like the first inning. Second, first inning. And they're like, Cavino, I'm 13 year old kid. I'm like, I'm pitching the championship game. I had no. I was not expecting that. Dude pitched it, won it. And again, that's just one goofy little story that happens time and time again over and over and over. But again, the times you had to step up in life and deliver. Hit us up at Covino and Rich at Fox Sports Radio.
Dan Byer
And now, you know, I thought of one more. I'm sorry. Just one more quickie. Because it doesn't always work out. I just want to give you the flip side. We're talking about the people where you get an opportunity. It doesn't work out. You know who we always forget?
Covino
Who?
Dan Byer
Unfortunately, the spot starter that gives up six runs in the first inning. The backup.
Covino
Not always a good.
Dan Byer
The backup quarterback who throws three picks and is like, all right, he's never going to get another chance. The NBA, you know, player that gets a shot in the G League to be on the squad, plays 13 minutes, you know, turns the ball over and gets no points.
Covino
So I don't want to, like, bring up weird memories, but. But I heard a broadcast recently where some guy was like, you can't be broadcasting here. And an anchor that works here had to take over the broadcast, like, mid broadcast. It was pretty sweet, you know, it was a pretty sweet transition. Like almost like flawless scenes in the.
Danny G
Middle of an interview.
Covino
In the middle of an interview, too.
Austin
And that guy's still at the anchor desk to this day.
Covino
And I'm looking at this guy right now. He did a great job.
Iowa Sam
Not all heroes wear capes.
Covino
I know, but again, that's like stepping up. You see, these things happen. And that's what happened twice in the past few weeks. Again, Dennis Scott and who was it again? Ahmed Farid.
Dan Byer
You know what? Backup quarterbacks in college, a lot of times someone goes down and you hope that maybe that guy has his opportunity. You see it at Alabama all the time because they have. You know, they're pretty deep. Next guy up gets a chance, whether it's young or before that, two, you know, like, it's always a guy that's getting a shot. I always think back to that one ball game, and I'm. I don't know why I'm drawing a blank. Texas quarterback who got injured on the first game of the first play of the national championship.
Austin
Colt McCoy.
Dan Byer
Colt McCoy. Now, whoever the backup was, we forget because that guy had an opportunity to be like, it's the national championship. Colt McCoy gets injured on the first series I'm in. But he wasn't. And we don't even know who it is. You know why we don't know? Because they stunk and the game was.
Iowa Sam
At, you know, Garrett Gilbert.
Dan Byer
Yeah, Gary Gilbert. No offense to him.
Iowa Sam
They actually made it competitive. And then they. And then Alabama pulled away.
Dan Byer
Yeah.
Covino
Well, it's finally so many moments. If someone gets sick, someone has 3,721. 3,721. Yeah. So again, your stories, your examples hit us up at Coveen Oenridge at Fox Sports Radio.

Dan Byer
Are we. Are we ready to play a game or what? Let's do this. It is. It's time for a little Shaq Diesel trivia. Let's go.
Danny G
Whenever we say not to name drop.
Covino
That means we're about to name drop.
Dan Byer
I'll name drop.
Covino
Oh, my goodness.
Danny G
Not only are C and R friends.
Covino
With Tyson and Mahomes, hey, man. They're also buddies with the Big Aristotle.
Shaquille O'Neal
What's up? It's big Shaq Diesel, AKA Shaq Fu, AKA Shaq Daddy, AKA the Big Aristotle. Guess what? It's time to win some C prizes.
Covino
Time for some basketball trivia.
Shaquille O'Neal
Basketball trivia.
Danny G
What he said.
Shaquille O'Neal
I used to break bad boys. Now I'm breaking records for FSL Radio.
Covino
Shaq Diesel basketball trivia.
Danny G
All right. Our FSR security walking our broke Shaq Fu into the main studio.
Shaquille O'Neal
What are you fools talking about?
Dan Byer
Oh, times when you step it up.
Shaquille O'Neal
Remember when I had to step up for the Jabberwockies? Remember how I dance with the Jabberwockies? Remember the time I had to step up and fight Sugar Shane Mosley? Remember that?
Danny G
Remember all those times you had to step up to the free throw line?
Shaquille O'Neal
Remember the time? Yeah. Remember all Those times I had to step up and miss those foul shots.
Danny G
What did you think of Holmgren missing those two big shots last night?
Shaquille O'Neal
Very reminiscent of my days. Of my days.
Danny G
You'll have to make up for it in game two.
Dan Byer
Well, I'll tell you what, Shaq, four time NBA championship, three PE with the Lakers. And then, you know, was that Miami Heat one just as nice because, you know, you got to branch away or what?
Shaquille O'Neal
Absolutely. Absolutely. This game, I got time to waste.
Danny G
Let's meet the contestants. 10 time winner, Rich Davis, right over there. Spotty's out until tomorrow. So the leader in the clubhouse to the right of me, 13 time winner, Dan Byer.
Austin
Hello.
Covino
Hey.
Shaquille O'Neal
Happy anniversary.
Austin
Thank you, Shaq.
Danny G
And even Shaq.
Shaquille O'Neal
No problem. I got you an icy hot gift basket.
Danny G
And looking to win a CNR stainless steel. We might pull something tonight on our studio lines. Let's say hi to Austin in Idaho.
Dan Byer
Austin.
Danny G
Austin. What's up, brother?
Dan Byer
What's up?
Shaquille O'Neal
Hey, what's going on, Austin?
Danny G
What do you do for a living there?
Dan Byer
I work over at Costco. Nice, man.
Danny G
All right.
Dan Byer
By the way, you know what the hot item is at Costco?
Shaquille O'Neal
Yeah, Chicken bake.
Dan Byer
No, not the chicken bake. I feel like every little kid's team and in sports has that speaker when you walk in. That like weatherproof speaker for all the announcements. 79 bucks, I think. Yeah.
Danny G
Here are the rules for Shaq Diesel Trivia. The first contestant with two correct answers is the champ. If there's a tie, we have a tiebreaker.
Shaquille O'Neal
Question five, time champ, four time champ, four times.
Danny G
Your name is your buzzer, but you do have to wait until all three possible answers are read. If there's two wrong answers in a row, we move on to the next question. Are you ready?
Dan Byer
Let's go.
Danny G
So let's get it on.
Dan Byer
All right.
Shaquille O'Neal
Let's get this big Aristotle party started. Which player was the first to win two NBA final MVP awards? Was it A, Willis Reed? Was it B, Wilt Chamberlain? Or was it C, Larry Bird? Which player was the first to win two NBA Finals MVPs?
Dan Byer
I'm giving Austin a chance to chime in.
Danny G
Austin, you're gonna nothing to lose.
Dan Byer
Austin.
Danny G
Austin.
Covino
Yeah.
Dan Byer
Let's go, B.
Danny G
B, Wilt Chamberlain. No.
Dan Byer
Ooh.
Covino
Rich.
Danny G
Rich for the steal.
Dan Byer
Willis Reed.
Shaquille O'Neal
Yes, sir, that's correct. 1970. 1973 with the Knicks.
Dan Byer
Yep.
Shaquille O'Neal
By the way, they got a shot. Knicks looking good, Rich.
Danny G
On the board so far as we go to round two.
Shaquille O'Neal
Round two. What was I once quoted saying about leadership? Hey, when I notice My teammates going through the motions. I slammed them awake with a monster dunk. B, our coach will yell until his voice is gone. I just shoot my guys a look and they know I mean business. Or C. Generals don't panic, then the troops never panic. What did I say about leadership?
Danny G
Damn buyer.
Austin
I'm gonna say B.
Dan Byer
No, Austin.
Danny G
Austin for the steal. Yeah. C, C, C. Yes, sir.
Shaquille O'Neal
Generals don't panic, then the troops never panic.
Austin
I just didn't think that Shaq or Danny G would make up that quote. I know Shaq had such a hard.
Covino
Time reading, but I'd have something in my eye.
Danny G
Dan Rich and Austin both on the board as we move to round.
Dan Byer
Hold on.
Iowa Sam
Didn't Shaq also say, go with the general and save some time?
Dan Byer
He did say that.
Danny G
Okay.
Iowa Sam
All right, just checking.
Danny G
Round three.
Shaquille O'Neal
Now, which former NBA player has the highest career free throw percentage? Is it A, Mark Price, B, Steve Nash or C, Rick Barry?
Dan Byer
Austin.
Danny G
Austin. I'm gonna go B, Steve Nash.
Dan Byer
Yes.
Covino
And the win.
Dan Byer
Let's go.
Danny G
Austin walks away with a CNR Swiggy.
Shaquille O'Neal
Steve Nash. He also gets a shout out. Shouts from who?
Dan Byer
Steve Nash gets a shot. Oh, that's a good question. Eminem.
Covino
No, Steve Nash.
Dan Byer
Oh, Fergie.
Covino
No, I forget.
Shaquille O'Neal
But she's got a big dumper. What's her name? You know, the girl, she sings.
Dan Byer
Nelly Furtado.
Shaquille O'Neal
There it is.
Covino
Nelly Furtado shouts out, Steve Nash, shot.
Shaquille O'Neal
Over 90 from the line.
Dan Byer
You know what's so funny? I was so sure of myself. And by the way, congrats, Austin. You got that Swiggy.
Covino
Congratulations with the Swaggy.
Dan Byer
When you were saying that question, Shaq, I wrote down. Before you even give the answers, I wrote down Mark Price. I was for certain. Because don't you remember when we were kids, like, that was the one thing he was known for, like free throws. That was it.
Shaquille O'Neal
Steve Nash highest career free throw percentage, 90%. Kind of the opposite of me, but thank you, guys. I have to work tonight. I have things to do, but it's always fun.
Dan Byer
Later, buddy.
Danny G
I want to specify, too, for former players, because obviously Steph Curry is tops on that list at 91%.
Covino
Thank you, Danny G. Good to see.
Shaquille O'Neal
Later, Sam.
Danny G
See you, Shaq.
Covino
Later, guys.
Dan Byer
Be realistic, guys. I'm not saying any of us.
Shaquille O'Neal
Shaq, baby, just.
Covino
Later, guys. Be realistic.
Dan Byer
Realistic.
Shaquille O'Neal
Later, man.
Dan Byer
None of us here play pickup basketball like we're Jason McIntyre from the Herd. None of us are. Coach Gottlieb, that are, you know, constantly on the court with their team. If I gave you 100 free throws.
Covino
Yeah, but I played double dribble.
Dan Byer
If I give you 100 free throws and you put money on the line, like money on the line, what would you guess would be your Percentage out of 100 shots? Free throw bikes.
Danny G
Do we get any practice or warmup, or is this coming off the bench? Ice cold.
Dan Byer
You can warm up if I said, danny, you can warm up right now. We start at 4:00 Pacific. You got 20 minutes to warm up. You could shoot around, dribble, get some water, whatever you need to do. But I said in 20 minutes from right now, I'm going to give you 100 free throws. You could take a couple breaks. They don't need to be all in a row. You have an hour. Take 100 free throws. How many are you hitting?
Covino
I would do it for fun, but.
Dan Byer
How many think you're getting?
Danny G
I would say we'd be lucky to get 40 out of the hundred.
Austin
Danny's correct.
Covino
I'm thinking over 60. Because once you get in a rhythm, once you find that rhythm, and the rhythm is going to get you.
Danny G
I think in our heads, we think we could get 60, but realistically, 40.
Covino
Really?
Austin
I don't remember when in the season it was, but I distinctly remember at one point in high school, I saw my stats and I was a 57% free throw shooter.
Rich Davis
Oh, really?
Austin
Yeah. And I. And I felt I was. I was good.
Covino
Wow. Yeah.
Austin
Like, no, I didn't think I was good. I was just appalled at how bad that it was. I'm like, wow, I'm. That only 57%.
Dan Byer
Yeah, I. You know, DB I was going to say I would be very impressed with myself, and I consider myself a pretty athletic, active guy. Right. And I would say I'd be impressed if I could hit 50% because.
Covino
Yeah, but Steve Nash, 90%. That is pretty sweet.
Dan Byer
I think you're. It's like one of those things where the average idiot thinks they could do more than they can athletically, which is why they have shows like, remember Pros versus Joe's. Petros was the host of that. I don't know. It's a. It's a good question. In fact, I feel like if we are bored one day, why don't we take the physical challenge, go across the street, 24 Hour Fitness, shoot some out of a hundred.
Covino
I would do it for the fun of it. Just to answer the question, let's put it to the physical. Let's take the physical challenge.
Dan Byer
Who would come in last place?
Covino
Vj Husky Spot.
Dan Byer
VJ Husky would come in last place.
Covino
He was like, ah, my muscles are hurting.
Dan Byer
I told you, I told you, I.
Covino
Told you my muscles hurt.
Iowa Sam
You would get tired.
Covino
The only reason I lost because my muscles are too big.
Iowa Sam
I think Vijay's hooping. You guys just hating Vijay's hooping way more often than we think. I think I'd probably be the one who end up in last.
Covino
Really?
Dan Byer
Yeah.
Covino
Come on, Sam, you tell let's do it one day.
Dan Byer
Speaking of preset, Fox Sports Radio, one of the other shows we're very friendly with. Great guys. Kelvin and Rob Parker. Love this odd couple. Great guys love their show. I want to settle a debate. I'm sure they may talk about this on their show at some point. Calvin put on Instagram story. Settle a debate. Do adults eat cereal with milk on a daily basis? How often? And the options were yes, all the time. Some days rare or what am I a kid?
Danny G
I saw this rarely.
Covino
Rarely for me. However, I'm a former serial killer. When I was a kid, that's all I ate. Don't tell my mom that though. She's offended.
Dan Byer
So there's a couple questions here. Number one, what are the foods that were out of your life for decades, then you have kids and it re enters because that's cereal for me. Like I probably went 20 years of my life, probably from 20 to 40 without cereal and then now your kids are in the mix.
Danny G
Dino Nuggies come back.
Dan Byer
Yeah, like Fruit roll ups are in my pantry.
Covino
You're eating gushers again.
Danny G
Yeah.
Dan Byer
So I'm gonna go. I'll rarely on occasion, maybe a late night edible or if I'm just got the munchies or something, I'll pour a bowl of cereal. If you had to give me your.
Covino
Go to cereal like my one to live on.
Dan Byer
Easy. I'm so torn because my debate, my inner debate is Fruity Pebbles or Cinnamon toast Crunch and I can't decide.
Covino
But hold on, here's my question. Is it without any repercussion, like I could just eat them for the rest of my life?
Dan Byer
Yeah, no calories. It's like when you go to a bakery.
Covino
If I had to stay healthy, I would have picked a lame ch.
Dan Byer
My wife and I are like a bakery. I always say, look in the bakery thing, if calories didn't matter, what would you house right now?
Covino
So it's the easiest question. Again, former. I'm like the Dexter of cereal. I house this. I'm a cereal killer. My answer is Cocoa Pebbles number one all day, eat it by the Box because it always came in a like slightly smaller box. I would eat them at a box a sitting. So you go cocoa because you get that chocolatey, delicious milk at the end. Cocoa Pebbles. My answer, number one on the board.
Dan Byer
I mean, I would argue that Cocoa. Cocoa and Fruity Pebbles are equally good.
Covino
See, but to me, they taste like tricks a little bit. Fruity Pebbles. I don't not like Fruity Pebbles, but Cocoa Pebbles is my answer.
Danny G
I'd say Cocoa Puffs is right up there.
Covino
You're the puff kind of guy, huh?
Dan Byer
I was Sam for Cocoa Puffs. I was Sam. What's your go to Sugary? Terrible for your cereal?
Iowa Sam
This is going to sound lame, but my favorite cereal is Rice Chex, which.
Dan Byer
Is like people make Chex Mix.
Iowa Sam
Clearly Rice chex with like 2% milk to me is just something satisfying.
Danny G
We used to put spoonfuls of sugar on top of that cereal.
Dan Byer
Dude. In my family, Cheerios or Rice Krispies, like plain cereal. Cinnamon like Honey Nut.
Danny G
Cheerios.
Iowa Sam
I like Honey Nut.
Rich Davis
Cheers.
Covino
My family, we ate Booty O's, bro.
Dan Byer
Booty O's.
Danny G
Frosted Flakes was a go to too when we were kids.
Dan Byer
But I mean, I feel like I'm the only one that even brought up Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Is this not universally loved?
Iowa Sam
Crunch is good.
Danny G
Yeah, we have that in our pantry right now.
Dan Byer
Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
Covino
It's going to be calling Danny's name late tonight.
Iowa Sam
You know what?
Danny G
I eat the healthy granola cereal now.
Iowa Sam
I'll tell you what, my favorite sugar one is a special K with the chocolate and strawberries. That's like a divorced mom's favorite cereal.
Covino
That's it. That is a good one. I like that one. But yeah, my answer, Cocoa Pebbles. What's your answer and why? Because they post this. Kelvin Post.
Danny G
Yeah, I'd say cereal for an adult like once a week.
Dan Byer
My dude. Kelvin KDub live on Instagram. Vote for yourself our good friends at the Odd Couple who are on Fox Sports Radio right after us. But I'm gonna go. Some days. I'm gonna vote some days.
Covino
Remember that variety pack? Yeah, some days. Cause you have little rugrats at home.
Danny G
And Rob Parker loves to save money. I think that he would probably get Corn flakes and put his own sug.
Dan Byer
Rob Parker, the type of guy.
Covino
Apple Jacks.
Dan Byer
Wait, is Rob the type of guy that buys the store brand like in a bag?
Covino
I like Tasty O's.
Dan Byer
Not. Not Cheerios. Tasty O. Tasty O. We'll see you guys tomorrow. Ariba Dirty Baby.
Covino
See you in the promised land. Later, guys.
