I had a feeling. Whoa. Sometimes I get a good feeling. I had a feeling that the Rams had extra to play for and they would play big. The Vikings had lost a little bit of confidence, but I did think that they would show up. More than that.

And it's not all Darnold's fault. I want to make that.

Listen, I'm going to defend Sam Darnold, but we are going to talk what the heck you do with this guy moving forward. But, oh, when he said this, I thought it was a beautiful Sentiment. So don't get it twisted. We live in la. A lot of destruction, a lot of sadness. But this is what Matthew Stafford said after the game we were playing for today. You know, it was. It was go get this win.

[Rich Davis]

But, man, it was really.

[Steve Covino]

People in Los Angeles struggling right now. It's been unbelievable to watch the whole community, you know, the state, the country kind of get behind them.

[Rich Davis]

It's a tough time to be back.

Came out and played like this tonight to get, you know, something to be happy about.

How do you think that what's happening back at home maybe somehow inspired you guys?

[Steve Covino]

Yeah, I mean, you know, we were living it every day. And, you know, it was.

[Rich Davis]

It was a.

[Steve Covino]

It was a tough week for us. A bunch of moving parts, organization did a hell of a job of taking care of us, getting us over here to practice, setting it up with families. I mean, it's been a whirlwind. And to come out here, play like we did and really, all phases. I'm really proud of this group. Did you add that emotional music?

[Rich Davis]

I did, just to prove my point. Okay.

[Danny G]

I thought he was going to start singing.

[Rich Davis]

Everything's better with emotional music in the background.

[Steve Covino]

But listen, you said it yesterday. Cavino goes, they're going to play for la.

[Rich Davis]

And I look in a game of inches, right? Every little advantage helps. And if they have something serious to play for, they all want to win. I do believe that. But they have that little extra on their mind, like, we got to do it for the city of la. We have to. You saw Puka Nakua cheering about it. He was all smiles, almost tears, like, we did it for la. Stafford did it for la. I call it the ol. Do it for Johnny. Let's do it for Johnny, man. We'll do it for Johnny. Now here's what Rich thinks. Rich doesn't believe in the old do it for Johnny. And I'm like, no. And there's too many examples where it comes into play. People play with that extra passion, that extra motivation that they need to push them over the hump. You saw the Rams playing big last night. The Vikings offensive line couldn't even stop them. They had nine sacks last night.

[Steve Covino]

It was an offensive line.

[Rich Davis]

It was an offensive line. My question, just to get it going, Fox Sports Radio Nation. Do you believe in the old do for Johnny? Do you believe in that Dojani? Because, Rich, you think what?

[Steve Covino]

I think that everyone's trying to do it for Johnny. Everyone's Got a different Johnny. Look at it this way. There are Vikings players that probably reside in Southern California, but they don't represent Southern California. Let me give you a dumb analogy. You know when you buy a car and you may have never seen that car on the road, and then you get that car and you're like, oh, my God, there's another Rivian, there's another Jeep, there's another, you know, BMW, whatever. Another one, another one. And you don't notice it until you have it. I think we notice these things when they happen because they're beautiful stories. But so many times there's someone playing for someone or something, and when it doesn't work out, you just move past it.

[Rich Davis]

What Rich is trying to say, and he said it many times, he thinks that there's no such thing as wanting it more. And I completely disagree. He's like, they all want it the same, and here's why. You could see it in the fight game. Everybody's fighting for a championship. Everyone's fighting for the bag or the heavyweight belt. Right. Some guys are fighting to survive, fighting to put food on the table, fighting to get their family out of poverty, fighting to change to family stars. And then there's other people fighting because it's the sport. You're going to tell me the guy fighting to get out of the barrio isn't fighting harder and stronger, wants him more than the guy who. Who was born with a silver spoon. They're just fighting because he likes to box.

[Steve Covino]

Did you just give me the storyline of Rocky 3? When Rocky got a little too complacent and he lost the eye of the tiger?

[Rich Davis]

Doesn't that prove the point? Rich is saying there's no such thing as wanting it more. They all want it. And I'm like, baloney.

[Steve Covino]

They're pro athletes. They all want it. Not Listen. Every team. If you wanted to dig for a sentimental storyline, you could find one. It's just the Los Angeles one is near and dear to us. We live here. We know people. We've seen things. It's been a terrible week and a half in Los Angeles. There's no doubt about that.

[Rich Davis]

Dude, if you don't believe in extra added motivation, then what? Rally cries don't help. Motivational speeches don't help. When they're getting in the huddle and getting people hyped up, that doesn't help.

[Danny G]

Yeah. You believed in that OMG song.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah.

[Steve Covino]

If that were the case, the Mets would have won the World Series.

[Rich Davis]

But that brought the team together, man.

[Danny G]

Yeah. And you, Rich, You've struck out on this argument before 2. October's agony go back in the CNR time machine here on Fox Sports Radio. You argued with us the day Dick Butkus died. And Covino said, do it for Dick.

[Steve Covino]

That's been his slogan since college.

[Rich Davis]

And Rich, I was just reading Rich's tattoo.

[Danny G]

Yeah, Rich, you said, nah, Chicago's not going to come out with extra effort for that. I don't know if these young players even know who Butkus really is. Remember?

[Rich Davis]

Yes.

[Danny G]

And then what? They. They scored 40 that night, won the game. Post game, the players were saying, that was for Butkus. And you came in the next day and you're like, okay, Danny, your Dodgers.

[Steve Covino]

Didn'T win the World Series for Fernando Valenzuela. They just happen to be a great team. And you know what? The fact that a legend passed away, it adds to the. The story.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah, but it's added motivation.

[Danny G]

And Chicago was not a great team in 2023.

[Rich Davis]

I'm not saying this is a. A foolproof plan that's undefeated. Of course it's not always going to work. Some teams are just better. But I think it could bring teams closer together, something to rally around. You're doing it for the fans. That dip. That Dick Butka story, that was a good one because Rich did make a point. These young players didn't even know who he was. But after the game, they're like, we did it for him. We know how much he meant to the organization, to the fans. Didn't they say. They showed us a bunch of his highlights before the game, so it got them inspired and motivated. I do think those little things work. They matter. You know, the Rams may have just beat him anyway, but the fact that they were playing for LA in a time of need, I think added to it. It adds to the story, no doubt. But I do believe in the do it for Johnny. And as I said yesterday, and I'll say it one more time, Rich, to me, one of the greatest examples was Brett Favre playing his biggest, best game the day his father died. Just more to play for. It was an escape for him to be in between the lines playing for his dad and put up crazy numbers on a magical night.

[Steve Covino]

Listen, do it for Johnny. I don't want to be the Joe Montana here. And by that I mean I don't want to ruin the Rudy story. You know, Joe Montana is one of my heroes.

[Rich Davis]

It's okay. But this is what you really believe. But if you believe it's coincidence. No, and that's fine.

[Steve Covino]

I Want to. I never want to be the buzzkill of fun. In fact, I'm the guy that wants to have too much fun.

[Rich Davis]

But I'm sorry, Charlie Murphy, I was having too much fun.

[Steve Covino]

I am. Sometimes I don't know how to not, you know, I don't know how to be serious. So the reality is, it's odd for me to have this stance on it because I don't want to be the Joe Montana that says, well, you know, guys, the team really didn't throw their jerseys on the desk for Rudy. You know, Rudy. It wasn't the movie was really inaccurate. I don't want to be Joe Montana and ruin the story. But for every Brett Favre who lost a family member and had the game of his life, we just don't talk about the guy who lost a family member and then had a crap game. You know what? Brandon Nimmo on the Mets, remember, his grandmother passed away. He found out right before a playoff game and ended up having what, like, couple hits, game winning hit. That's a great story, but If Nimmo went 0 for 4, we just would never have really heard the narrative again. It's like the, oh, wow, I got these new Jordans. I thought no one else had them. Then you see, like two other people have them.

[Rich Davis]

Let's leave it to the people. Fox Sports Radio Nation, we're calling on you. You make the call. Like the old school NFL tapes. You make the call. Do you believe in the old? Do it for Johnny. The fact that the Elliot Ra Rams pulled off a 279 victory over the Vikings.

[Steve Covino]

Wait, so Harbaugh and the Chargers don't care about la? They love.

[Rich Davis]

They were doing it for LA and you heard Stafford talking about it. Then there's always that magical story of D. Gordon. I know that's one of your favorite stories. How do you not factor that story into it? D. Gordon wasn't a home run hitter, but guess what? He was when he let off the game right after Jose Fernandez died. That was magical. That was brought a tear to everybody in the stadium.

[Steve Covino]

That was against the Mets. And I remember even the Mets players were in tears after.

[Rich Davis]

But Rich is saying coincidence, so I'm saying magic.

[Steve Covino]

So answer me this.

[Rich Davis]

I'm saying moments. I'm saying added incentive and motivation to get together and really come together for one cause, dude, aside from winning, everyone's there to win. They have that little extra.

[Steve Covino]

I don't want to be. I don't want to be Debbie Downer. What's the male version of that again?

[Rich Davis]

Negative, Norberto.

[Steve Covino]

Just saying. I don't want to be negative.

[Rich Davis]

Norberto, why you gotta be so negative?

But to me, if your theory is correct, and Stafford and Puking, the KUA and Kyron Williams and these guys really were playing for all the people out here in LA that were struggling playing for a city. I get it, dude. I'm not insensitive. I live in la. I've seen what's happened.

[Rich Davis]

I don't think you're being insensitive. I think you're just taking a realistic approach to it.

[Steve Covino]

But by that thinking, by that thinking, the Charger should have whooped the Texans on Saturday. And my parlay was dead after that game. You know, Jim Harbaugh.

[Rich Davis]

Wait, are you saying Matt Stafford's a liar? I'm pretty sure. What was the first thing he said? Sam, can you play that one? Just right off the bat.

[Steve Covino]

We were playing for today, you know, it was.

[Rich Davis]

It was go get this win.

But, man, I saw the people in Los Angeles. There it is.

I guess you're saying he's lying then.

Now, Rich, the Charger situation was slightly different because they went to Houston as scheduled. They didn't have the bid. Well, jet airliners picking them up and that stadium bending over backwards to help the la.

Cause I still think of them as the San Diego Chargers. Anyway.

[Steve Covino]

Okay, so it's. Yeah, it's a little different, I'll give you that. You know why this theory was put to sleep for me 24 years ago? The year was 2001 1.

[Rich Davis]

But, dude, miracles don't always happen.

[Steve Covino]

That is true. I do not like, and I think I speak on behalf of everyone in this room except Covino.

[Rich Davis]

Green eggs and ham or the Yankees?

[Steve Covino]

I do not like green eggs and ham or the New York Yankees. The one time in my life, I'm a. I'm a. I'm a man. I'm 40. I'm a man in my 40s. One time as a grown man, have I rooted for the New York Yankees? It was when I was living in New York City after 9 11. And that's the one year they couldn't get it done.

[Rich Davis]

The one year they lose to the Diamond Match, Mo Rivera lets up a bloop single to Gonzo, and they win. That was a nightmare.

[Steve Covino]

I have a question, as a Yankees fan, would you have given up two of the other World Series for that one?

[Rich Davis]

No. I mean, things happen as they may, it was a heartbreaker. Everybody was pulling for the Yankees except for Arizona fans at the time. Yeah, but you can't Expect it to always happen, Rich. But there's so many moments and so many times where it does. You're not changing.

[Steve Covino]

You're not changing my mind. I'm just saying. I get it there.

[Rich Davis]

Are you saying Matt Damon was lying? Not Matt Damon.

[Steve Covino]

I'm gonna let you figure this one out. I don't know where you're going.

They outplayed the Vikings because they're. They're. You got a little heavy heart because of all the sadness here in la. I think they're just.

All right, let me ask you this. When they were in the locker room trying to hype each other up, smashing helmets, hitting each other in the pants.

[Steve Covino]

What are you doing in the locker room?

[Rich Davis]

Right? Getting each other fired up for the game, what do you think they were saying to each other? I, George Foreman, guarantee. I, George Foreman, guarantee. What are you doing this for the city of la?

[Steve Covino]

Are you selling mufflers?

[Rich Davis]

Dude, so many people are. Are watching this game tonight. We got to give them something to cheer about. Let's do it for la. We're the LA Rams. We got to do for. I guarantee you that's what they were saying.

You know what? If it was helpful motivation, I can't argue that.

So anyway, your thoughts?

[Danny G]

You know what, Kavina, really quick. I wish the Lakers could have taken your sentiment last night. They lost by what, 20 to. To WEMBY and the spurs on Cooper induction night. And J.J. redick is a person who lost his home unfortunately in the fire.

[Steve Covino]

Reddick lost his home and they lost by 20. So again, it doesn't work all the time.

[Rich Davis]

Lost all. I heard his stories. Kids lost all their collectibles and jerseys.

[Steve Covino]

So sad Cove, answer me this.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah.

[Steve Covino]

Do you think this goes under the same category as bulletin board material? Because another layer of the Rams story was that. Did you hear how it. It got out then after the Vikings Lions game two weeks ago, when during the postgame little handshake, there was the sentiment of a see in two weeks. Oh, yeah. And that was a insult to the Rams. Like, what are they with the Lions? Just the Lions. And everyone thinks that, oh, they'll just match up two weeks from now against.

[Rich Davis]

I also think it's a matter of the Rams seem to be clicking at the right time. Right.

[Danny G]

I was going to say momentum in season adjustments made by Sean McVeigh. Yeah, he's always good at that. And the Rams always seem to click towards the end of the year when it matters.

[Rich Davis]

They seem to be clicking. They seem to be pumped. They made the Vikings look flat.

[Danny G]

Yeah, they're d. Had momentum going into this.

[Rich Davis]

We can't forget the fact that they got a total momentum call with that forward pass. My. I got to be PG here. My goodness, that was a ridiculous call. So again, they had calls in their grounding.

[Danny G]

Come on.

At least intentional grounding.

[Steve Covino]

And don't forget, we got to remember how teams finish an NFL record. I'm not saying means nothing, but if a team has a slow start, do you think how they played in September really reflects how this team goes into the playoffs? The Rams, while their record only says 10 and 7, they finished, I'm pretty sure, like 7 and 1 in the last eight games.

[Rich Davis]

And they had that. The Vikings were coming off of a knockout.

[Steve Covino]

They had a throwaway Game Week 18 against the Seahawks where they didn't play their starters. So the Rams have played as good as anyone for the second half of the year. So that's something to think about.

Didn't JJ McCarthy tweet something cryptic, too? Am I wrong about that. Did I fall for some bait online? Like, he just. Nothing negative.

Just like, if they got J.J. mcCarthy, they're not going to overpay for a guy who came up short when they needed it. You know, he had a good season but didn't win and didn't really show up when it mattered most. Is it all on him, though? That's the thing. It's not all on him. The Vikings played like ass.

[Danny G]

He got sacked nine times.

[Rich Davis]

Some of those he could not have gotten away from.

Yeah, dude, that was ridiculous. And again, the Rams did get some calls. They got some calls that.

That was a straight up intentional grounding call that they reviewed and still got it wrong. So moving forward, all quarterbacks on their way down should just flick their wrist forward because he was not passing it to anybody.

He did have the fumble that led to it.

This is not a time to send cryptic messages at all.

Amor fat. That's his way of saying amor fati is not that he wants more fat booties. It's his way of saying fate. Fate will have it that Sam Darnold showed everyone that he's Sam Darnold. And the plan is back. I'm your guy. J.J. mcCarthy. McCarthy for quarterback.

Ridiculous. You know what? We're gonna take your feedb.

Everybody's coming down on Darnold, and, yeah, he stunk it up that line. It really was the offensive line. It really was nine sacks.

And listen, you could argue there are three or four times where I'm like, get rid of the ball. Like. Like, he does hang onto the ball a little longer than I'd like at times. But Stafford was under constant pressure. But as many people are discussing today on tv, radio, podcasts, what does this do to the future of Sam Darnold as a Viking, as a member of another team. Like the last two weeks, two bad performances in a row at the most inopportune time when you're fighting for the one seed. And then not only that, you don't even get past the wild card round when if you beat the Lions last week, you're sitting pretty. Think about that. The Lions win last week, right? They haven't even touched the football field. Again, the Vikings are out out. The significance of that week 18 Sunday night game and of course Sam Darnold lackluster on Sunday night and then over the weekend, lackluster again. Did that take Sam Darnold from multi year contract with Minnesota to hey, we're moving forward with J.J. mcCarthy. Did that happen in two weeks?

It seems that way. And that's the feeling we have a day later. But you know a bad game where he got sacked nine times and it wasn't completely his fault. That erases the great season he had. Man, how fickle we are as fans.

I said to you during the break, I go, they still were 14 and 3.

Yeah, exactly. So how quickly we changed our mind on Sam Darnold if that's the case.

Yeah. And I was thinking about it because a Vikings fan commented under his post and said love of fate. Are you happy that our team lost? And then I was thinking about it. I forget which talking head it was on tv. I watch a lot of sports. But he was saying that he felt like J.J. mcCarthy is better than any QB in the 2025 draft coming up. And we've heard a couple people say that and think that. Don't know if I would agree with that. But J.J. mcCarthy's a hot commodity right now. Right. If you're.

But someone was saying how we're so quick to want to assume that this year's draft class is where you need to go. Meanwhile, what if a guy got drafted mid round last year and he just happens to be better?

Well, and we've been speculating this on the network. We've heard it on TV, like I said. So you're telling me J.J. mcCarthy hasn't heard all of this and he hasn't seen how his own team has embraced Darnold? So. So maybe that's where some of this is coming from.

Any final thoughts on Sam Donald before we move on? Did he. You know, it's. I hate to see a player. It's not that he bet on himself because he was on a one year deal. It's different. Sometimes a player bets on himself and it backfires. Sometimes the player bets on himself and it works out. This was not this case. This was a case where Sam Darnold was given a shot and it looked like, oh, wow, it's like Baker Mayfield all over again. Are you going to judge Sam Darnold on 2 weeks after 16 games?

[Rich Davis]

Unfortunately, as the Crystal Method said, that's the name of the game, Rich.

[Danny G]

They were the two most important games and they could have got the number one seed. They could have had the weekend off.

[Steve Covino]

Like I said, that game had such significance that the Lions haven't even stepped back on the field yet.

[Rich Davis]

They're chilling.

Dan Campbell's, you know, having a mojito with his feet up and flip flops waiting for.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah, Washington. That was not how you wanted to go out after such a good season for the Vikings. And it's just so sad for the fans because they really had so much to cheer for this year. Only to end on that note. That was the weakest note to end.

[Steve Covino]

That's being a Vikings fan, though, if.

[Rich Davis]

You look at history. For sure. Yeah, Skull.

[Danny G]

That's why I. They probably need skull.

[Rich Davis]

And I'm.

[Danny G]

And I'm not talking to you, Scott, our boss, but Vikings Fans probably need 24, 48 hours to let things kind of calm down before they really unleash their feelings. Because online I've been seeing Vikings fans saying, let them walk. Just let them walk.

[Rich Davis]

Or as they say, you know the old saying, a two fat a. What's the saying? What is amore fat amor Fat.

[Steve Covino]

And translation is not I love fat booties. It's what JJ McCarthy put on social media, which is to trust fate, essentially, which is I love fate, baby.

[Rich Davis]

Games, though, cryptic messages Is this. Aside from teenage girls on TikTok, who else does that? JJ McCarthy. Cryptic messages after a major loss like that? That is lame, though. Dude, that kid is lame as hell. He's a kid and yeah, shows you how young they are. It really is lame, though, because you got so many moving parts, so many what ifs with the Vikings. You just lost a heartbreaker after a great season and you. You tweet something cryptic. Wayne, be sure to drink your Hobble team.

[Danny G]

In a way, Rich, they were playing with house money. We were one of the only shows I didn't hear on any other show him or her pick the Vikings to go to the playoffs.

[Dan Byer]

It's true.

[Danny G]

We did believe in some of it. Was. How would your dad say it? Covino. Yeah. Remember the day Shapiro was in here? We were previewing the preseason, which was about to start, and Rich and I were like, don't count out Darnold. And of course, Rich saw a lot of them in San Francisco, and we said, he's going to. He's going to throw a lot that might lead to the playoffs. I didn't hear that anywhere else. We saw people predicting the Vikings to maybe have four wins. They called it a rebuilding year for the Vikings.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah, they were just sort of waiting around for J.J. mcCarthy to take over. And, you know, Sam Darnold had other plans So I wonder if the Vikings will have a short term memory or a long term memory on how he performed. And do you put more stock in the two most important games? Like, is it, you know, do you say weeks one through 17 mean nothing compared to week 18 and wildcard weekend? So we shall see. But you know, it's interesting. I saw Nick Wright, who's over on the TV side of things on Fox Sports 1 FS1. He had a, he had a really interesting take on how he finds nothing embarrassing about failed predictions. And I sort of love this take because he said if you're gambling in Vegas, if you're an expert, like we're talking expert, where people pay you for your picks. Like top level, top tier guys selling their picks on social media. I'm so good at gambling, buy my picks. Those guys hit between 50 and 60%. No one in sports, radio, TV, gambling anywhere is ever gonna go more than like 60%. So of course you're gonna have terrible takes along the way. It's just a matter of like, do you try to hide them or own them?

[Rich Davis]

I mean, it's also how you present them. You don't know anything, but they present them like they do.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah.

[Rich Davis]

And I take great pride in being like, this is just my opinion. I'm not clairvoyant, you know, I can't predict the future. I don't know. I'm not Madame Ruby. And that's how some of those people come across, to be honest.

[Steve Covino]

The Alamo.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah, like, you know, you don't know. I see a bicycle and then there's accountability. That's often not taken after you just told me the day before that this was, this was how it was going to be. So, and I'm not calling out Nick Wright by any means. I'm just saying that's the culture.

[Steve Covino]

I mean, some of the best. Collins, Stephen A. You know, back in the day, how many times did Max Kellerman say that Tom Brady was done and he's a great dude. So it just, it's interesting. I don't know if anyone really predicted other than, you know, maybe a few. So we'll own it, Danny. We were one of the few people that I know that we were saying.

[Danny G]

Don'T count the Vikings and I'll give Colin a shout out. That's why a lot of people love his segment where Colin was right. Where Colin was wrong. Yeah.

[Rich Davis]

Take accountability. Because the truth is nobody knows. And that's the, that's the reason we watch sports, to see the unexpected, to see cool things. Happen.

[Steve Covino]

Trust me. I was the last couple of weeks. I'm like cold as ice when it comes to picking. I last night I was like vikings minus two, two and a half. That was a couple of your college.

[Danny G]

Your last two college picks it though.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah, that is true. That was a good parlay. Thank you, Danny. All right, well, listen, Sam, Donald, we'll see what happens. I'm sure a decision will be made sooner than later. In fact, our buddy Brandon, one of the great editors here at Fox Sports Radio, is a big Niners fan and he's thinking that Brock Purdy, they're going to get that deal done in the next week or so and all the, all the pieces won't fold. It'll, it'll before you know. And then you know the other story. I'm sure Dan Byers keeping an eye on Deion Sanders, meeting with Jerry Jones, like all these things. That's why, remember we said last year, the NFL even outside the games themselves, all summer, all spring, we're going to be talking about this stuff.

[Danny G]

Who would have thought three weeks ago that Sam Darnold may get less money than Purdy?

[Steve Covino]

Wow. Yeah, I mean, a ton. Like significantly.

[Rich Davis]

Things have. Yeah, things change quickly. Now our next discussion has to do with the playoffs. Has to do with Justin Herbert, as I heard on the Odd Couple. Justin Sherbert.

[Steve Covino]

Justin Sherbert.

[Rich Davis]

Justin Sherbert. And your thoughts on how do you know when someone stinks? Rich calls this the three year stink. I take it back to fighting. I often do, because you could lose an embarrassing fight. Like, man, did that guy even show up? Happens and you could lose a fight but still come out with a moral victory. Like when Berlonga, Edgar Berlonga fought Canelo. Yeah, Canelo won. He beat him. But Berlonga showed how tough he was. So even in a loss, he got some respect and showed that he's got what it takes. So you can lose with style. I think we saw two different versions of losses over the weekend. Bo Nix lost, but I think he had the moral victory of, man, that guy's got some game, yo. Denver's found their future. Yeah, he lost, but you're like, man, they're not ready. But he's good though, huh? He could battle. And then you see guys like Baker Mayfield, like, man, came up short. But dude, that guy fights. It's losing with fight, losing with style, losing with some pride. And then there's losses like Justin Herbert. And by no means are we the show to dump on Justin Herbert, but there's a different Feeling in how he lost. It could be the expectations that are involved. But Rich is saying, no, it's the three year stink.

[Steve Covino]

I'm not going on a Dave Portnoy two minute rant about how Justin Herbert stinks. He's the worst ever, by the way.

[Rich Davis]

I'm glad you brought that up. I'm a Portnoy fan. Right. Yeah, he's a good dude. We used to be on the same channel with the guy, but guys like him can create a power, a powerful narrative when really they're just talking about the money they lost. That's why he's angry about him. Of course, he did the same thing with Darnold. He lost, I think 11,000 on Sam Darnold. So now Sam Darnold's the worst ever. And then people run with that mindset. That's also very unfair. Dude, just because you put money on this guy doesn't mean he's the worst.

[Steve Covino]

But there are guys that come with an expectation and then there's guys that are a surprise. It's sort of like the bedroom.

[Rich Davis]

Oh.

[Danny G]

Oh.

[Steve Covino]

Sometimes you're lucky enough to find yourself in an intimate situation with a girl that's gorgeous.

[Rich Davis]

Sam. You need to pull up some like, sexy music or something. You need to have like a saxophone solo on standby.

[Steve Covino]

Sometimes sort of a letdown. You're like, oh, I thought that'd be better. And then there's times you find yourself with a girl that you connect with but might not be the most attractive. But then that was way better than I thought. It's all about the expectations going in, pun intended. And going into every season, there's a couple quarterbacks that were. Wait, we're just waiting for that, for it to click. And I'll give you two of them. Justin Herbert and Trevor Lawrence.

[Rich Davis]

Those are the number. That's number one. And number two, is there going to.

[Steve Covino]

Come a point where we consider either one of these just maybe not what we thought?

[Rich Davis]

And if you want to stick to your own theory, three years. Trevor Lawrence is at four years. He had a few playoff games, right? But he's at that level. He's the first guy that comes to mind. Too rich. And it does come with expectations. So what do you guys think about assessing a quarterback? Right. Some people have a longer shelf life, more opportunities, more chances than others. But at what point do you just say, yeah, man, they're good, but they're, they're not living up to their expectations and they can't seem to win when it matters?

[Steve Covino]

I mean, Herbert's Numbers are great in the regular season. Right. I mean, fantastic. In fact, this year, his best statistical year, but five years now he's a young man in life. I'm thinking, can you really start assessing? Because we've talked the other day about how with a coach, it's very fair for a coach, for a radio show, TV show, any, anything in the creative space or performance space, it's fair to say three years is, is a fair amount of time to be like, all right, this show never really picked up steam. This coach never revamped the program. This show never got ratings.

[Rich Davis]

Like, especially in a world where we live in a win now culture.

[Steve Covino]

Results.

[Rich Davis]

We want results immediately. You know, three years is plenty. And it's also like, wow. It's also shocking to see how some people get the more of a chance than others. Right. Because how many people would have been out already?

But I also don't want to say that that works for everyone because Philip Rivers, Dan Marino, there have been great quarterbacks.

They also played in a different time.

We gave those guys more of a chance to develop. And I think we should give these dudes more of a chance to develop. But they seem to be the exception here.

As you said, we live in a, to quote the comedian Ronnie Chen, we live in a prime now world where you order something, it's almost not good enough sometimes when it go, it's going to be here in a day or so. Day or so prime now I want it now. I want. But wait, my, my quarterback's a rookie. There were people that were like, Caleb Williams, Chicago, we ready to win now. Slow down.

[Rich Davis]

Well, you know why was hanging at.

[Steve Covino]

USC three months ago.

[Rich Davis]

Look at Jaden Daniels, look at Bonix. You do see guys, they're like, yo, they came to ball from the get go. So it does give you this false expectation that everybody could bring it that way.

[Steve Covino]

And there's guys that didn't even get a chance at the beginning. The Aaron Rodgers of the world. And then you say how many times I know it's, it's old now. They were, this is the 90s, you know, Peyton Manning stunk his first year.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah.

[Steve Covino]

But you know What? It's not 1998 anymore.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah. Joe Burrow, you know, he's a guy that's, that's delivering on his expectations.

[Steve Covino]

So when you talk about guys like Trevor Lawrence and Justin Herbert and young dudes around the NFL, Kyler Murray, when does the point come where you could assess that, hey, you know what? Maybe they're not what we thought. Or Danny G. Do you just have to accept that sometimes you have a franchise guy, he'll be your quarterback for a decade, but you just never get there? Because Bernie Kozar, Dan Marino. I'm just naming people. Philip Rivers. There have been guys throughout our life that were good, that just never won.

[Danny G]

I think inside the building, in your facility, you know the guys who are working very, very hard during the off season to get better because possible MVP for this season, Josh Allen. He had a bad first two seasons there in Buffalo. I'm sure they're happy that they were patient with him. His third season, he broke out with 37 touchdowns. But don't forget his rookie year. He had 10 and 12 with 12 picks, 20 and nine his second year. And I remember hearing the stories that he was working so hard to improve his accuracy and get in that third season. It took for him.

[Steve Covino]

The stories about Josh Allen, you ain't kidding, that sometimes you wonder, well, I mean, how much work could you really put in to improve your accuracy? Well, guess what? Look at Josh Allen. There were times where Magic Johnson. I heard the criticism. Free throws, right? There were certain layers of a guy's game. And you. If you have the ability to work as hard as some of these elite athletes, you can improve a part of your game.

[Rich Davis]

Absolutely.

No doubt.

Another thought, like, I'm gonna add this to the list. Rich and I have a few questions that come to mind. One of them is like a painter. How does that painter know when the painting is done? How does he really know when you're saving someone's life? How do you know a few more pumps wouldn't have saved it? How do you know he was done? How do you know he's dead? For real?

How do you know? Yeah, maybe a few more hi hats wouldn't have made it better a couple more. How do you know if this quarterback stinks or not when you know he has all the potential in the world? Meaning you know, Justin Herbert doesn't stink, but he's not winning when it matters.

But then damn by. Do you remember watching Last Dance like we all did, like multiple times during COVID Do you remember until Michael Jordan won an NBA title, the narrative started to become, can Michael Jordan not win?

[Rich Davis]

Yeah. Can he not finish?

So at one point in time, at one point in our lifetime, there was a narrative floating Around. I don't know if Michael Jordan could finish.

We grew up in a time and can Duke win the big one? They would go to the final four and they would always lose. Or it felt like they would always lose, but they were there a bunch of times and fell short. And then they breakthrough in 91 and the rest is history. Yeah, there's. I would say, to answer your question, you know when you know and you know when. And that's what I think hit with Darnold last night is. You know, you had all these other questions and everything, but you just know. And I don't think we do know what Justin Herbert just yet. But you know, when you know, Dan.

You know, it's interesting. Covino and I, you could argue it's a crutch of ours, but I'm fine with it. I feel like there's so many commonalities with life and relationships because I feel like there's two things I feel like I know, and it's relationships and sports.

And then there's other times. I met my wife. I dated a plethora of women that I was unsure of. I met my wife. Yes, I say I met my wife. We were engaged within a year. She was my Josh Allen. You just knew. No, she was my.

And I think that's the tough part about last night for the Sam Darnold supporters is I felt that you're like, yeah, they lost to two teams this year. They had four total losses, twice to the Lions, twice to the Rams.

And. And by the way, I. I do want to make this clear, too. No one's, like, not rooting for Justin Herbert to be the guy he's supposed to be, you know, but you give people so many chances. It's. Look, three years is a lot in the NFL.

[Steve Covino]

But you know what? Now nowadays I made the silly analogy that if, you know right away, you know, my wife, she was my Jaden Daniels, I knew right away Danny G said, Josh Allen took a couple years to get there. How many times you met someone? They're like, my wife is my best friend. We've been together 20 years. You know, we were friends for years before we got romantic. That there's different ways to get there.

Well, Dan, you know, Danny called the, the third season the breakout year, but when he said he threw 20 and nine his second year, that tells you something. That's not 15 and 14. Yeah, like there's like, okay, maybe he's on the track, maybe things have turned around and then you end up taking off. And I don't, I don't think three years is enough. And I know Sam Donald hasn't been in the greatest of situations, but yeah, I know last night was tough. It's not entirely his fault either.

But I just, definitely not that offensive.

Line didn't help him. But the last two weeks, he looked like the Sam Darnold in New York that was seeing ghosts.

We're still talking about Gary Carter's perm and Keith Hernandez mustache. Because if your team has no recent glory, you will always talk. Jets fans are talking about Joe Namath still, you know, like, you know, when you think about your team and the glory days, you know, Minnesota Twins fans, they're talking about the late, great Kirby Puckett and, you know, Dan Gladden's mullet. We always love the nostalgia. And the Cowboys are one of those teams that we love to think, you know, America's team, you know, settle down. But they have not won since many of us were in grade school, since forever, they settle down just a little bit. They haven't been playoff relevant and super bowl relevant since the 90s. Before smartphones, before when you were, when.
