In fact, if you missed Mike Tyson on the show yesterday, the real Mike Tyson not broke Mike Tyson. The real Mike Tyson. Check our clips at Fox Sports Radio. At Covino and Rich. We're going to be posting more clips and of course check the podcast. But yeah, let's go. Let's get into this, Rich. We got last one standing today. We got prizes to give away, games to play. We got to talk about Mark Gaston. Why you say? Well, because he's all over social media today because there's a new 3030 about him, 30 for 30 coming out. And we got to talk about forgiving.
Dan Beyer
And forgetting there might be someone in your life that is holding something against you that you did years ago and you might not even know it.
Steve Covino
Right? Plus, should players be fined if they suck? Lots to get to today if we have time. But first and first, mostly got to talk about your boy with the weak ass haircut.
Dan Beyer
He didn't have a weak haircut last year, huh?
Steve Covino
Yeah, but everything about him is weak now. I don't know why. Talking about Juan Soto. Juan Soto, the New York Met got to talk about this guy because we speculated for the past few days, why in the world would he choose the Mets? And I said, because he's a bag chaser. It was all about the money.
Dan Beyer
It's not related.
Steve Covino
But you knew we were going to hear more and more stories as to why he made his decision, Right? A lot of speculation you brought up, like maybe he just likes the Latin vibe of the New York Mets. Maybe he likes playing with Lindor and these other guys. Maybe he likes those dudes. Maybe there was something more than met the eye today.
Dan Beyer
There are more reasons we always talk about this. It's never just pick this team. Here's where you're going to play. There's so much involved, the coaches, the players, the training staff, how the team treats you, the organization itself. Like there are, there are more layers now, of course, most chase the bag. That's a layer of it. But that's not. I just knew that wasn't the whole story.
Steve Covino
Well, today, according to the New York Post and other news organizations, according to us, Cavino and Rich on Fox Sports has to do with the City Field suite. Apparently when he was negotiating with the Steinbrenners with the Yankees, he said, I could be he, I want sweet for my family. And the Steinbrenner is like, no, we're not budgeting on that. Cashman was like, no, we don't do that. He said, I want a sweet for my family. Now, based on my research, Rich Sweets are about, could be about 25,000 a game, 20 million in perks over the 16 year offer they gave him, which was $760 million for 16 years. So they're not cheap. A suite for his family is not cheap.
Dan Beyer
But let it be known, when you say they're expensive, that's you're using the marked up prices that they charge like the average Joe. It doesn't cost them that much money to operate a suite. I mean, a suite's just a room with five chairs and some buffet tables. When you talk about what is a.
Steve Covino
Suite worth, designated value, though, what do you mean? They're not just chairs in a room. There are chairs in a room that have a lot of value because people pay a lot of money for them to watch the game.
Dan Beyer
Someone buys them. That's if all the suites fill up.
Steve Covino
If every game it's the Yankees, it's not the Athletics. So he went to the Mets and the Mets didn't even blink about it. And apparently that was part. I'm not going to say the reason. The reason is by Hoobastank. The reason to me is all about money still. But this is part of the story as of today. Now I got to make this clear, though. So people are like, well, what about guys like Jeter, guys like Aaron Judge youe know, former captains and current captains of the team, even they get a suite at discounted prices. So the Yankees, according to the story, it's not like they weren't willing to give him a suite, but they weren't going to give it to him for nothing. They were going to give it to him at a discounted rate.
Dan Beyer
That's the wackest.
Steve Covino
The same way they would do to Aaron Judge or Derek Jeter. You can tell me this guy's above them.
Dan Beyer
That's the wackest. And you know what?
Steve Covino
Good riddance reason. Good riddance, Green Day style. Take him. This guy's a diva. And he's going to be a nightmare thorn in your side when he doesn't produce. Because when you're paying someone this much and you're rolling out the red carpet and you're stroking this guy like your Clarence Carter, you expect him to produce when he doesn't enjoy that.
Dan Beyer
You are such a bitter biach.
Steve Covino
Well, I'm telling you, that's the story.
Dan Beyer
Yankee fans can't accept this. They can't accept it. It's wild. It's like the hot chick that has never been rejected and she can't fathom. Oh, my God. How can he not want to take me to the prom? No, how does he not want to marry me?
Steve Covino
Part of the morning process today is like, good, have him.
Dan Beyer
Do you sound ridiculous.
Steve Covino
Deal with him when he's 41 years old, limping around like a fat Pablo Sandoval.
Dan Beyer
Do you realize how you sound? Insane.
Steve Covino
Okay, I'm telling you, you love them. Updated the story. How am I gonna update the story without giving you my opinion?
Dan Beyer
You loved him and wanted him yesterday and now he's a fat Dominican guy that's gonna be limping around when he's 40.
Steve Covino
Yeah, I don't want anybody that wants me if someone doesn't want me in life. Do you still love them and want them the same way? You don't want me, I don't want you back. Exactly. You hate me. I hate you back.
Dan Beyer
Let me tell you this from the beginning, I said one of the few advantages the Mets have because the Yankees do have the legacy of the pinstripes and all that. However we have agreed that somehow that doesn't mean as much to the younger players as it used to. The world's smaller. It's. It's not. It doesn't have the lore it once had in the George Steinbrenner days. And the Mets are known for what? What is the big thing the Mets are known for?
Steve Covino
Sucking. What?
Dan Beyer
Sucking what?
Rich Davis
I don't know.
Steve Covino
You tell me. Why are you making it a guessing game? That's why.
Dan Beyer
Yeah.
Steve Covino
Bobby Bonilla contracts.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Dan Beyer
Bobby Valentine's mustache.
Steve Covino
Oh, oh, move on. Contracts. No.
Dan Beyer
What the Mets are recently known for is how family friendly they are. That's what brought Verlander and Scherzer. That's what got DeGrom to want to stay in the beginning. That's what's luring these people. Steve Cohen is about making sure the players, wives and kids and everyone is accommodating.
Steve Covino
He's about kissing ass. That's all he's doing right here. Cause he wants to prove that his bank account is deeper than the Yankees. That there's a new big head honcho in town. And that's fine.
Dan Beyer
You can't accept it.
Steve Covino
That's what it's all about. Doesn't mean you're going to win.
Dan Beyer
You can't accept the fact.
Steve Covino
No. And I will give you this. Citi Field, way more welcoming than Yankee Stadium. There's no question about that. I will never debate that. I love Citi Field as a place. I think they did a great job with that. There's no question that it's more of a family friendly ballpark.
Dan Beyer
Does it hurt Yankee fans feelings that knowing that it's not totally about the.
Steve Covino
Bag, it is that they didn't offer this to anybody.
Dan Beyer
That someone would prefer. I just don't want to play for the Yankees. Is that just.
Steve Covino
You're giving someone 760, offering 760 million to play baseball and they're offering a discounted rate at the suites and he can't afford it.
Dan Beyer
No.
Steve Covino
If he wanted to play for the Yankees, he would have. It was about the money.
Dan Beyer
I see. I disagree. I think Yankee fans who have acquired more big name players with money than any team in Major League Baseball history, now all of a sudden they're like chasing the money. You guys did that and still have been doing that for the last 60 years. Well, that's from Reggie Jackson till now. The Yankees have been buying stars. So now the guy doesn't want to go to you and all of a sudden now the Mets are.
Steve Covino
We debated this yesterday prior to Mike Tyson Stopping by. I'm giving you the update today. The update today is oh now it's about the suites, the family suites and accommodating his family. I also heard rumblings, a side story because again you don't know what to believe yet. This is a story from New York Post but I heard other rumblings about security during security security during the postseason. Given his family a hard time and he didn't appreciate that. How would you like it if someone gets. You can't hold that against the organization. Cause some Jabroni was unclear on who his family was. That's just a mistake that they would have to correct in the future. Would you let that determine where you're going to play? I don't know. But that's another side story.
Dan Beyer
I think you're just upset that this is the Yankees worst nightmare.
Steve Covino
No.
Dan Beyer
A star player.
Steve Covino
I'm starting to accept it.
Dan Beyer
A star player less a top three player in the league in their prime is not choosing you.
Steve Covino
Showing me where his priorities are. And I know you could spin it and say oh his priorities are his family. No, this guy's a diva with crazy demands. The Yankees already offered him $760 million. That wasn't enough. So beat it. Like the more and more I'm starting to hear about the real character of this man. You know the guy who was BFF with Aaron Judge and then totally slapped him in the face by choosing the Mets. The more and more I'm seeing the character and stories develop, the more I'm like I don't want this guy on my team anyway. You question his character now? Yeah, that's a big part of building a team in chemistry. He seems like a very selfish player. Again, all about him. Players had a team player.
Dan Beyer
Has that been a reputation fact. We're going to Soto.
Steve Covino
We're going to talk about selfish players when we talk about Mark Astino. And that's what I'm getting out of Juan Soto. Baseball is a team sport. So we'll see how much he brings that, that, that team together when he gets all this specialty treatment and the other teammates don't.
Dan Beyer
So I saw Rich Eisen sharing the same sentiment. Who I love watching his clips on social media. If the Yankees had acquired Soto, what would the what would the conversation Danny.
Steve Covino
G. Be that makes sense. He made the World Series with them. They treated him well. Let's run it back. It was that not make sense.
Dan Beyer
A one year trade rental and they assumed he would have stayed because it's the Yankees.
Steve Covino
Rich Eisen probably hates the Yankees. I don't care what he says about the Yankees. I'm telling you what I'm. What I feel.
Dan Beyer
I'm telling you that he shares the same sentiment as me and a lot of people, which is if Juan Soto had stayed with the Yankees, the narrative that you and all Yankees fans would have had was, well, there, you know, it's the right move. Staying with the pinstripes. Yankees he chose, he goes somewhere else. He's a traitor. You just question his character.
Steve Covino
How do I know that?
Dan Beyer
He's bag chasing. He's this, he's that. What about every other guy that's on the big contract with the Yankees in the industry?
Steve Covino
You mean like Aaron Judge who said, yeah, thanks for the money. I'll pay for my suite at a discounted price. He's better than Aaron Judge. No, he's not.
Rich Davis
Plus, would he be fat and old at the end of his contract if he was on the Yankees?
Steve Covino
Yeah, because I wouldn't have wanted him for 16 years.
Rich Davis
I mean, that's what they weren't.
Steve Covino
They offered. Yeah, that's what they were offering, but it was crazy. This became a bidding war. It's not even about how good he is. He's great. He's not that good, dude. Let's be real about that. He's a young guy now. How's he going to develop? We don't know. I know he's entering his prime, but is he going to stay healthy?
Dan Beyer
Who cares?
Steve Covino
What do you mean, who cares?
Dan Beyer
You should care if he gets on your team, if you get. All right. Ohtani. Ohtani. $700 million contract in my mind, has already paid off because they won a World Series. That's why you got Ohtani. They won a World Series. That's invaluable.
Steve Covino
Well, let's not lose focus at the story. The story today is family. The spin is going to be. It's a PR spin to be hon honest. There's. There's the truth and then there's the spin. The spin is going to be Soto's a guy that always puts family first and he wanted to make sure his family got a free suite at Citi Field. No, he wanted more money from the Mets, period. That's it. He wants you to kiss his feet.
Dan Beyer
You don't know any of this.
Steve Covino
Yes, he wanted to be a star on the Mets as opposed to just another star in the Yankees. And I'm not saying that's wrong. I'm just saying that's the truth. He wants to be his own man. That's Fine. He didn't want to play in Judge's shadow. You know why Judge's shadow? Because Judge is bigger and better. That's why. And I'm happy with that. And I'm starting to accept it, to be honest. But the update today is they wanted to give him a free suite at Citi Field and not at Yankee Stadium. It wouldn't budge.
Dan Beyer
To quote A Christmas Story, one of your favorites, cry baby, cry. You sound like such. You really do. And it's not just you. So I'll point the finger in the face of all Yankees fans that, hey, listen, you win some, you lose some. When the Mets lost the grom and he went to the Texas Rangers, I was bummed out. When your team loses a guy. Yeah, it's frustrating. It's like, oh, man, look, he went somewhere else.
Steve Covino
Why would I.
Dan Beyer
You just can't accept it.
Steve Covino
What is it about accepting? Why am I supposed to be happy for your Mets, you bozo? What reaction do you want? I'm telling you the update about the suite. Am I supposed to be like. And when you think about it, I understand. He should get accommodations greater than Derek Jeter and Aaron Judge.
Dan Beyer
That's.
Steve Covino
You think that would be appropriate feedback? On what planet?
Dan Beyer
I expect you not to love this, but I expect you to not be a jaded buffoon, okay?
Steve Covino
And by the way, you quoted Scut Farkas. Do you guys know that Scott Farkas little sidekick in A Christmas Story was none other than a young Brian Johnson from AC DC with that little goopolina? That's not true. It is true. I saw it in a meme, so it has to be true. Yes. Lead singer of acdc, Dan Byer, gave a smile.
Dan Beyer
Dan, you've. You've heard this? You've heard this rumor?
Steve Covino
You've seen the memes? Yes.
Dan Beyer
Yes, Dan. I mean, baby. Again, voice of reason, Dan Beyer with his Seahawks sweatshirt on today.
Steve Covino
I know how it sounds, Rich. What do you want my reaction to be? You know what? You know, I get it, man. He chose the team that. That he believes in most. The Mets.
Rich Davis
Get out of here.
Steve Covino
What do you want me to say?
Dan Beyer
I want you to just not be so foolish. Poop. I want you to not be so full of it and being like, it's chasing. He has no character. He's chasing money, maybe.
Steve Covino
Exactly what it is. I seen it with Robbie Canoe, and I wish the same thing for Juan Soto moving forward.
Dan Beyer
Yeah, right. Going to Seattle.
Steve Covino
Chasing the bag never wins. Chasing the bag never wins. Trust me on that. And that's exactly what happened. Never going to work. Never. Because it's all about him. And all these guys that are excited about playing with him, they're going to be real excited when he's taking private jets. He has his own luxury suites. He's doing his own thing. The Mets do everything together. He seems to me to be above the Mets.
Dan Beyer
You.
Steve Covino
That's what made the team magical last year. They did everything together.
Dan Beyer
You're not.
Steve Covino
You're.
Dan Beyer
You're not talking about the same guy that you were sweating for the last six months, Right? Seems like a different guy.
Steve Covino
I mean, I didn't have a full calendar year with him. The more I get to know him, the more he's. He's exposing himself as a diva who expects the red carpet rolled out for him. We'll see what happens.
Dan Beyer
How often in your life are you given the opportunity to call the shots? Maybe once in your life. Twice.
Steve Covino
You know why this show is great? Team player, man. You know why other shows stink. They think they're above the room. It's just how it goes.
Rich Davis
What's up, DB if you wanted. That's my fault. Sorry, Mary Mac. That's my bad. If you wanted me to be the voice of reason, I think Cavino's got a lot of good. Yeah. And good points on his side. But the problem is history's not on your side. Like, nobody looks at the Yankees is the.
Dan Beyer
Oh, what was them.
Rich Davis
Yeah, yeah. Like, I get it. The chemistry stuff. The whole, like, I understand the number. The 765, whatever. Yeah, it doesn't look good, but it's just really difficult to hear it come from a Yankees fan.
Dan Beyer
You know what it is? The Yankee fans will get no sympathy the same way. Imagine you're walking through Vegas, right? You get done eating dinner, and you pass, like, the hot club, and you see a hot girl outside getting all mad that she wasn't allowed in, and you're like, oh, yeah.
Steve Covino
Oh.
Dan Beyer
Like, oh, wait. Oh, you. You have to wait in line. Like, everyone.
Steve Covino
I'll give you. I'll give you a better.
Dan Beyer
I should be vip. I don't wait in line. Oh, I'm so sorry, sweetheart. That is you.
Steve Covino
Juan Soto had the perfect woman. The perfect woman, right? And she was tickling every part of his crevices and doing everything right. Right. Juan Soto was in a perfect relationship with a perfect woman. Seems stale, but she was a little older. Juan Soto found the same exact woman a few years younger, and that's what he chose. It's a character flaw.
Rich Davis
Who lives.
Steve Covino
He already had he had a beautiful thing going on.
Rich Davis
Same cul de sac in the gated community.
Steve Covino
She's just a little younger. She's just a little younger. And what's that say about that guy? What's that say about that guy? He threw away his family in a perfect situation for, you know, another good woman, just a little younger.
Dan Beyer
What about did the character. I know he got a character flaw. I know we have to break, but what about instead of a character flaw, what about the sentiment that Juan Soto says, I want to leave my mark. I want it. He won a World Series for the Nationals.
Steve Covino
Dude, if you want to leave your mark, put your name besides the greats, not besides Benny Agbayani.
Dan Beyer
How dare you first of all make fun of the first ever Samoan American superstar, Benny Agbayani. No, but you could become.
Rich Davis
That's gotta be racist.
Dan Beyer
Look, look at, look at the 80s, right? You're the first one to make fun of it. The Mets. We still sweat Keith Hernandez's mustache and Ron Darling and Daryl Strawberry.
Steve Covino
I'm not a Mets hater. But guess what? When you start throwing your money around the way you guys are, you become a target and people start to hate you. I actually like the Mets, but now they're, they want to be that team. They want to be that team that people hate you. Like Juan Soto made a, a hateable decision. He made a Hollywood Hogan decision. I'm giving you the reaction. That's, that's, that's necessary.
Dan Beyer
You like the Mets when they weren't a threat to you.
Steve Covino
Now, speaking of family, Rich, before we get into Last One Standing, giving away prizes here on the show, special Tuesday edition of Last One Standing because Iron Mike was on the show yesterday.
Dan Beyer
For real.
Steve Covino
Catch the podcast. If you missed it, catch our clips at Covino and Rich, Fox Sports Radio. Mark Gastineau. And I say speaking of family, because remember we had the Gastineau girls on our show years ago.
Dan Beyer
How 2000's reality.
Steve Covino
Yeah, it was a big show in the early 2000s. His hot ex wife and his beautiful daughter, the Gastineau Girls.
Dan Beyer
Yeah, there was a time where Cavino was going to be a Gaston O boy.
Steve Covino
Oh yeah. The thing is, I was torn between the daughter and the mom. Just kidding. That's a joke.
Dan Beyer
Not a good one. Gaston O Girls. Let's see here. Yeah, good one, bro.
Steve Covino
But they were both hot. I remember the daughter's the mom.
Dan Beyer
So the mom looks like the late Suzanne Summers a little bit.
Steve Covino
Yeah, they were both on our show years ago. I remember they were both good Looking. And they were famous for being Mark Astino's daughter and wife. Yeah. Mark Gastineau, a famous New York jet. So growing up on the east coast, you remember any kid with a mullet and a feathered pompadou had a Mark Gastineau haircut, negative sideburns, good looking stud of a player. Back in the day, he was very much an 80s stud. Mark Gastineau. Now he's the star. Star of the New York Sack Exchange, a new 30 for 30 that premieres December 13th on ESPN, our old stomping grounds. Now, the premise of the story is that Mark Astono is sad and depressed and disappointed because he just can't let go of the fact that he's no longer the all time season sack leader. And as a result, he's not in the hall of Fame. And he's like, I've seen so many of my contemporaries and teammates end up in the hall of Fame, and I was better than all of them. I was the all time sack leader. Until that no talent ass clown, Brett Favre took a dive for Michael Strahan.
Dan Beyer
Yeah. Now he was the all time seasoned sack leader.
Steve Covino
I said season sack leader, so. Which was 22 sacks, I believe. Now, if you guys remember the highlight, you remember the clip. You could visualize the clip. Michael Strahan's going for the record and Brett Favre sort of just falls back and Strahan falls on top of him and then sort of goes to his knees taking in the moment, sort of crying that he's the new single season sack leader. Mark Astonos at that game. And you know, when you're at the game, you really don't know what happened. Everything happens fast. And I think that's his side of the story. Like, hey, I didn't know. I was just being a gracious guy and I gave Strahan a hug and I went on with my day. But years later, looking back, they stole that record from me because Brett Favre gave it up to Strahan and he's now on this quest, according to the documentary of I want my record back, I want that sack back. That's not fair. And it affected my life. And it poses the question, like, hey, man, do you just move on? Because, like, even Mike, who runs this place, said, nobody even remembers that.
Rich Davis
Who?
Steve Covino
And then I'm like, yeah, but isn't that the point? Yeah, no one remembers that Castano had the record. No, I want to be remembered.
Dan Beyer
By the way, I've rewatched while you were just setting the story up yeah, I've rewatched a Strahan Brett Favre sack multiple times and it's not a illegitimate sack. It sounds funny. It. It really is. Strahan catch him. Catches him around the corner and instead of getting, you know, blasted Favre just sort of falls down a little, right? This is. Please watch this and tell me.
Steve Covino
I've seen it a million times.
Dan Beyer
Yeah, I know, but it's not like.
Steve Covino
That'S the record breaking Strahan sack.
Dan Beyer
Right? I misremembered and I thought, wow, did. Did far really take a fall? But look when you, when you watch it here again. Yeah, I got it.
Steve Covino
Mark Astono taking it in. There's Strahan.
Dan Beyer
There's Strahan.
Steve Covino
Lining up, lining up.
Dan Beyer
Fake handoff. Oh, he rolls the wrong way. And he would have ran right into Strahan.
Steve Covino
If anything, I think Brett Farre took away from the moment because Strahan would have got him anyway. Either way, Gastonau has sour grapes about the whole situation.
Dan Beyer
Sounds like a baby. And here's the Thinging is our 1 theme today. Babies.
Steve Covino
Well, here's the thing. Because his former teammates, there's two cool parts to this story because again, there's a new docu series coming out about it. A 30 for 30.
Dan Beyer
What's Joe Cleco got to say?
Steve Covino
People are saying, look, he's not. Not in the hall of Fame because he doesn't have the single season sack record anymore. It's because he was a selfish player. Former teammates, colleagues, they're all saying, a lot of people, Marty Lyons is on record saying, I tell everybody he's the greatest athlete I ever played with, but he was selfish. There's other players that say all he cared about was sacks, meaning he wasn't going out of his way to tackle a running back and put himself in jeopardy to pop somebody running the ball. He was so focused on his stats and sacks and just getting the quarterback. That's all he cared about. That's why he's not in the hall of Fame. This dude's legacy has now taken a hit as a result of all this. So he's speaking out in this new docu series. And then, Rich, he's at some sort of convention, some sort of NFL thing. And the viral footage today is he has a face to face with Brett Favre.
Dan Beyer
And you know what? You know what was on the menu for lunch, by the way, at this convention? Awkward burgers. Awkward burgers. Because when you hear, when you hear this weird interaction between Gastonau and Brett Favre, you're going to feel, you know, that awkward, cringy, douchey feeling where you're like, that's how you're going to feel. And we'll play it for you after DB's update. What's going on?
Rich Davis
You know, Rich is maybe pulling me over to the Davis side of things in that Soto conversation. But then when you said that this sack is legitimate, I'm right back over to Covino. Sorry. Sliding right over, I think. I don't know if it was Bubba Franks or whoever it was, was the tight end. I mean, just. I mean, it was.
Dan Beyer
No, no. Block.
Rich Davis
Yeah, let's move the velvet rope. Just slide on in and let's. Let's do this. That's. Yeah. Just by the way, in looking at that game, because you were seeing like the close up of it. Packers were up 34 to 25 with 245 left to go in that game. So really, it's like, what would be the reason, even for passing, if. If you're in a two score game.
Dan Beyer
Oh.
Rich Davis
And you're trying to bleed the clock down, why would you be in a passing situation?
Dan Beyer
No, you're right. No one is usually dropping back to pass when you're up by a silly. A little more than a score.
Steve Covino
And Gastineau wasn't a likable guy. And everybody loved Michael Strahan. That's all part of it, too.
Rich Davis
Yeah. Just. Yeah. Dun, dun, dun.

Very few companies who go viral are like, totally prepared for what that means.
Steve Covino
And Zoe Tillman, senior legal reporter, Courts.
Rich Davis

By the way, a lot of people say Mariah Carey's Christmas song is the best. I'm here to say no, it's not. It's this one. Alvin and the Chipmunks for Life. Chipmunk Punk. My first album and my favorite after.
Dan Beyer
All those holiday cookies. You're a little Theodore ish lately.
Steve Covino
And you're always Simon. Always and forever.
Dan Beyer
Oh, you think you're Alvin?
Steve Covino
I am Alvin.
Dan Beyer
Senor Theodore.
Steve Covino
Covino and Rich. It's holiday season. Mary on the ones and twos. Danny G. Spotty, db.
Dan Beyer
Let's go to DB for the breaking news.
Rich Davis
Guys, we talked about it a little bit ago. Max Freed, the left handed free agent has decided to sign an eight year, $218 million contract with the New York Yankees. According to ESPN, it's the largest guarantee in baseball history for a left handed pitcher. Max Freed, eight years, $218 million deal. Jeff Passen with that, he is going to the Bronx is Max Freed.
Dan Beyer
Wow, what a traitor. What a man of zero character.
Steve Covino
Just chasing the bag. Chasing the bag, chasing the legacy.
Dan Beyer
Think about all the all the bro handshakes he had with his fellow Braves players.
Steve Covino
I'm just saying what you said about the legacy, bro. But he was 11 and 10 in 2024, 3.25 ERA.
Dan Beyer
He's a stud. He had an off year. Statistically, Max. Max Freed is one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball. But I mean, chasing the bag going to the Yankees. What a man.
Steve Covino
Oh, this just in. Breaking news from Steve Covino. Juan Soto also chose the Mets because Steve Cohen promised him personal tootsie rubs after every game. Personal foot rubs from the owner himself.
Dan Beyer
I'll rub Soto's feet if he took that there. Come on. Thank you, Dan Beyer. And you know what a big pickup for you gu. Guys.
Steve Covino
I'm happy 30 years old. By the way.
Dan Beyer
I am so happy to have Max Freed out of the National League. Could have went to a team with more integrity. But hey, he's a Yankee now. Max Freed.
Steve Covino
Can't wait. Welcome to the Bronx. Max Freed.
Dan Beyer
You know Garrett Cole. Max Freed.
Steve Covino
And if his Freed from the Braves.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Dan Beyer
Then if his heads on straight Orodon, you have a pretty good one, two, three in the playoffs.
Steve Covino
You need good pitching. Your best pitchers on the Athletics now.
Dan Beyer
Nah, Sevy wasn't the Mets best pitch. I would say Kodai single will be back. Mania. You know, they got. They got a few, but the Mets have some pitching.
Steve Covino
Hey, on a positive. On a positive. When did we ever interrupt NFL talk during the season for baseball updates? Baseball's big, right golden at bat, Juan Soto drama. Max Freed to the Yankees. Baseball making some noise in the off season.
Dan Beyer
I'll tell you what, the fact that you and I are fighting about baseball, it's a good thing.
Steve Covino
It is. It's good for baseball. And we could agree on that. So Mark Gastineau is in the news today. Again, former New York Jet legend, defensive legend. He was the all time seasoned Sack leader with 22 until Brett Favre took a fall for Strahan.
Dan Beyer
Or did he? Right. So if you want to hear this cringy audio when you're thinking it's going to be two veterans, two, you know, Pro bowl type of guys chopping it up about football. And he goes confrontation like, I want my shack back. Take a listen. If you missed this, you tell me.
Rich Davis
A long time ago. At least I saw you, right?
Steve Covino
How you doing when you fell down for him? I'm gonna get my sack back. I wanna get my sack back.
Rich Davis
Dude, you probably would hurt me.
Steve Covino
Well, I don't care.
Dan Beyer
You hurt me. You hurt me. You hear me?
Rich Davis
Yeah, I hear you.
Steve Covino
You really hurt me.
Rich Davis
You hurt me. Brett, we gotta get back to this. Brett, I'm sorry.
Steve Covino
I'm not trying to justify Mark Astono here. I'm not.
Dan Beyer
By the way, you see how quick that wrangler tried to get Brett out of there?
Rich Davis
He sounds like a stalker.
Steve Covino
Yeah, but I'M trying to say or what we have to make clear is regular jeans. This single season sack record that he had clearly meant he had 22 sacks. Strahan ended up with 22 and a half. Clearly meant a lot to the guy. And look, when you think, when you're Brett Favre and you're Michael Strahan, like, you've won Super Bowls, you have all these other accolades, this is all. The dude had probably dealt with a lot of loss. He's like, and I lost my record on that weak ass play. It's a weird clip, and it's weird to confront somebody in that way because I was saying to Rich, again, just putting it in perspective. Football's all the guy knew. That was his whole career. That was his legacy. We've all been hurt by somebody indirectly. Someone that stole our job, stole our girlfriend. Can you imagine confronting that guy? And he's like, you know, you hurt me. That's what makes it weird, right? Like, you hurt me. He's like, what? You took my job? Like, no, I didn't. I just. Like, no, I didn't. It's just a weird interaction, a weird thing that most normal people wouldn't go out of their way to do because you move on.
Dan Beyer
The thing is, with your life, he's a weirdo. What does he want Brett Favre to say? Like, you're. I'm sorry, man.
Rich Davis
How do you think. How fast do things happen on the football field, do you think? If Favre was really trying to give him that sack? Like, how about he was just couldn't even react in time and he looked like he just kind of fell down.
Steve Covino
Like, do you think he was really.
Rich Davis
Trying to gift him that sack? Well, it sure looked that way if.
Steve Covino
You want to hear it.
Rich Davis
But you said he would have gotten him anyway.
Steve Covino
Well, again, but it didn't even look.
Rich Davis
Like Fava attempted to move out of the way or split spin out of the way so fast that you turn around, wants to jump in.
Steve Covino
But it's all coming to light today because these clips are going viral. It's from the new 30 for 30 that debuts on the 13th is called the New York sack exchange, and Mark Astono was the single season leader until Brett Favre took a dive for strahan.
Rich Davis
Again, it's 34, 25. Green Bay with the ball near midfield. Under three minutes to go, and you're going to run a pass play. By the way, I think it was Bubba Frank's blocking. And for all of us football fans know, Bubba Franks was a tight End what play? If your Green Bay going into the week, do you say, we got to get Bubba Franks solo blocking Michael Strahan, like, does not happen like that is, you would think, like, we got to get Bubba Franks and three other people over there to block Michael Strahan, keep him off Favre's back. But lo and behold, with three minutes left in the game, in the final game of the regular season, that's what the Green Bay packers run.
Steve Covino
And, and, and I'm just giving you the flip side. I could see where Gastineau comes across odd. He is gracious in the moment. He's there to congratulate Strahan. It's just after realizing, you know, once he saw the play and years later of dealing with this and losing that record and not being in the hall of Fame, it starts to sink in. Like, man, they took that from me. You can't see it. You get older, you start speculating. Like, he did handle it crazy at the time.
Dan Beyer
If Brett Favre did take a fall and Bubba Franks was a tight end blocking on a, as Dan Byer said, an irrelevant past play in the fourth quarter of a game, I don't think the intention was, we're going to get the best of Mark Castano.
Steve Covino
Right?
Rich Davis
You want a running back blocking Strahan.
Steve Covino
Okay, so you don't have any sour grapes, dude. Well, since then we worked with people that busted your chops. You don't have any sour grapes because they made your experience just a little, little awkward.
Rich Davis
Let me turn the tables on you for a second, Rich. Say you set an all time Fox Sports radio or just radio in general record for doing 2,569 shows in a row. And then some guy beat you by one show. But he didn't even show up for that show. He phoned in for half a segment on his cell phone.
Steve Covino
Yeah, that was your record.
Rich Davis
And they counted it. Yeah, and they counted it as the record, dude.
Steve Covino
That's why I'm saying. And you were retired, Rich.
Rich Davis
You couldn't go back. You couldn't do anything about it.
Steve Covino
I would be mad, dude.
Dan Beyer
I really would be just to play step boy. Since then, TJ Watt also shares the lead now with 22 and a half with Strahan tying Gaston O with 22. Sex. Jared Allen, Justin Houston. I mean, it's. It's not this record that Gaston would still even have today.
Rich Davis
Of course not. And are records meant to be what? Meant to be broken?
Steve Covino
So forgive and forget, move on with your life? Yeah, you could say all that. But you could also say, hey, football is all this guy really had and all he really knew, what he was known for, what he dedicated.
Rich Davis
What does anybody have who plays football? They have football, right?
Steve Covino
Again. So my point is, it's easy for us to say, get over it. That's this dude's life and legacy. Now hear more from Mark Gastineau again. You'll see it again on what's today, the 10th. You'll see it in three days on ESPN. 30 for 30. But here's what else he had to say about the whole thing.
Rich Davis
Anybody will tell you Brett Favre took.
Steve Covino
A dive, and you know what? She knows and he knows and everybody knows. I didn't know what had happened. The NFL should have stopped that and said, listen, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Rich Davis
That's not a sack.
Steve Covino
He took my record away from me and his legacy and his. And again, like I said, Mike didn't even mean anything when he said it. He goes, nobody even remembers that. But that's sort of the point. People would have remembered Mark Astono. Maybe he would have been in the NFL hall of Fame if he had that record. Up until T.J. white, you said, just tied it.
Rich Davis
What were you guys calling him earlier? You said he was a selfish player. Yeah, that sounds like the comics of a selfish player.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Dan Beyer
Who only cares about a record.
Steve Covino
Roger that.
Rich Davis
That's a Packers fan. Iowa. Sam.
Steve Covino
Well, I actually do agree with you, Sam. I really do. But I'm giving you the flip side to the story just to make it more of a balanced and fair conversation, because I do see his side as well.
Rich Davis
I get it. He really held onto that. But if he had, let's say, reacted poorly in the moment when the record was set, and then later on was like, you know what? I overreacted that. But it's the reverse. It was. He was gracious in the moment, and then he festered on this for 20 years. What's he supposed to do?
Dan Beyer
You know, during the steroid era in baseball, there were those that felt very sad for a guy like Roger Maris, who really wasn't the elite guy like a Mickey Mantle was, but he had that record, 61 home runs. And there are people that remember for a while, they're like, oh, that's the record. I acknowledge none of those. Bonds and Maguire and Sosa and. And you gotta say, there was probably part of the Marist legacy that was like, how do you know that's the real record?
Steve Covino
Family was there, remember to. To cheer it on. I guess.
Dan Beyer
Like Sam said, records are Made to be broken. I get it sometimes.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Steve Covino
But you don't want it to be handed over.
Rich Davis
The other thing with Maris, too, was his chase of Ruth. 60 wasn't an easy one. Like, he really stressed out about those. Part of the. Because the. That record was Babe Ruth's. And so it, you know, in a way, it was a bit of a gift and a curse for it, but I think it was by. In large part embraced by it. What does. I mean, Michael Strahan is now on every TV screen you can possibly find.
Dan Beyer
Should have been guessing.
Steve Covino
Yeah. Yo, but hold on. You're laughing, right? You don't think that's what he thinks it is what he thinks.
Rich Davis
I don't think he thinks that. I think that he says Michael Strahan is everything else. This was the one thing that I wanted. This is the one thing that I had.
Steve Covino
Yeah, I like that. I like that, too.
Rich Davis
And that the NFL wanted Michael Strahan because Michael Strahan was going to be destined for these bigger and better things that they wanted. Like, it was better for them. Like, maybe it was better for Major League Baseball for Hank Aaron to have the home run record than Barry Bonds. Like the NFL is saying for us, it's better that Michael Strahan has the record for Mark Gastineau. And that's what Gastineau feels. So at the time, we knew that Michael Strahan in 2001 was destined to become a media personality. I think he was well liked.
Steve Covino
Dabbling was always beloved in New York.
Dan Beyer
Think about it. Live with Kelly and Mark Consuelos. No, Gastono.
Steve Covino
He's an old guy now. I feel bad for him, man. I do. I sympathize because he's an old guy who's so hung up on this. That's sad to me.
Dan Beyer
Let's sell this once and for all.
Steve Covino
Hold on. Whether he Good Morning America.
Dan Beyer
Strahan put a guess it on the Today show.
Steve Covino
Whether he's right or wrong is still sad to see. It is. But by the time.
Rich Davis
By the time that he confronted Favre, what was that? 2017, 2020. What was it? The record had been broken and eclipsed several times over. So it's like he'd already been buried in the record book. By the way, the other portion of it is because sacks weren't tallied, that Deacon Jones probably would have broken all of these records. And looking back on it as well. So it's not like we looked at the whole entire NFL where we do that in baseball. We have the entire stat sheet from Baseball back to the 1800s. The NFL only started to count sacks after a certain year. So there are edge rushers and pass rushers who never would have been able to break that record because stats weren't counted at that time.
Steve Covino
By the way, you got to see Brett Favre's reaction in that clip. Man, that must have been so weird from his perspective. To go up to Mark Astono, like, hey, and then be shot down like that in the moment. That's so awkward.
Dan Beyer
It's awkward. We've said this before. I don't know if everyone's been there at least once where you bump into someone from your past and they're mad about something and you had no clue they were.
Steve Covino
There's something about it that's very relatable and I can't really pinpoint how it applies to me in my life, but I feel like I've been the recipient. I've been something weird. It's not healthy.
Dan Beyer
I've been a few. I've been in a few moments where I've had weird encounters where someone thought I may have got with like a girl they were with. There was an old coworker Cavino and I, that has a story about how they were a waiter at a restaurant and they were convinced that like, I big time them and stiffed them on something and it clearly would never have happened because I know how I operate. Like, I would never have, you know, like.
Steve Covino
And he held all this resentment.
Dan Beyer
It was like 15 years later.
Rich Davis
Benefit the doubt.
Dan Beyer
It was one of those, like, yeah, dude, why you give me. Why you bust my, you know, why bust my huevos all the time? Well, you know, when I worked at Houlahan's and. And he told me this whole story and I'm like, I don't know what you want me to do. So I jokingly bought the guy like a gift card for dinner and I'm like, are we cool now? Like, people hold weird things, dude. They really do.
Steve Covino
And Brett Favre, two hula hands.
Rich Davis
I mean, just for the flip side of it, though, people hold grudges for perfectly good reasons, too.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
It doesn't just have to be a phony reason to have a grudge.
Steve Covino
That's true, man. So, hey, Fox Sports Radio Nation. And I'm now intrigued, very, very intrigued to see this. 30 for 30. Your thoughts on the Brett Favre taking the dive for Strahan. Mark Gastineau living with that. With that storyline and the sadness for all those years, he wants his sack back. Your thoughts? 87799 on Fox.
Rich Davis
One more question. Just on that portion of it or something you said there, Covino. This is what worries me about this documentary now, which I would have loved to have watched. It's like when you see a movie trailer and all the funny parts are in the trailer.
Dan Beyer
Yeah.
Steve Covino
You saw it all.
Rich Davis
So you watch the movie and it's a complete downer like this. Like, what tops this in the documentary? Like, this would have. I wish this would have been almost withheld. And then it airs and we're talking about it on Friday, you know, afterwards.
Dan Beyer
Because it's relevant to today.
Steve Covino
Because it's like, it's something that the.
Rich Davis
Sack exchange happened back then. This is something that's still like, present relevant.
Dan Beyer
No, Dan saying. Dan saying. Instead of putting this as part of the trailer, they should have just let this air episode during the documentary.
Rich Davis
Right. It's definitely a deeper, heavier part of the document.
Steve Covino
This air is Friday, right. I think we're gonna come back on Monday and we're all gonna be like, yo, man, Gaston is a whack a doodle.
Dan Beyer
Or you might be like, I feel bad for this dude.
Steve Covino
I don't know. It's gonna be one of those. It's kind of like, remember that Brat Pack documentary that came out with Andrew McCartney McCarthy? And he's like, I hated being labeled the Brat Pack. And everyone's like, hey, dude, you sound like a big crybaby. That was the sentiment after watching the whole thing. I think that's what we're going to be talking about on Monday, but we'll see.
Dan Beyer
You know, my dad loves to talk about all the time. When we. When I was growing up on Long island, my next door neighbor, looking back, she was an attractive woman that worked for the jets in her 20s.
Steve Covino
Oh.
Dan Beyer
So a lot of times sports cars would zip down my block, pull up in front of the house, and my dad would get all like, oh, who's speeding down the block? Who's parked in front of my house? You know how your parents are always weird when someone parks in front of your house?
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Dan Beyer
And I remember one time Mark Gastineau and Joe Cleco get out of the car. And my dad, the whole joke. My dad's like, oh, you want to park on the front lawn? Like, these guys were beasts. They were huge in New York in the 80s. I just didn't know he held this resentment. And we'll learn more about it clearly in the documentary. Let's go to Brooklyn and talk to Bruno. What's up, dude?
Rich Davis
Gentlemen, good afternoon.
Steve Covino
Or Good evening.
Rich Davis
I think you're on the west coast, obviously.
Dan Beyer
Here's the deal.
Rich Davis
You know, we can say what we.
Dan Beyer
Want about Gastineau as a person.
Rich Davis
I think he's got that kind of unappealing Persona. But you know what, in terms of.
Dan Beyer
That record at the time, I mean, you guys look back, how good these guys were.
Rich Davis
I mean, they were phenomenal.
Dan Beyer
I mean, he was Lawrence Taylor on the green side.
Rich Davis
But here's the bigger part.
Dan Beyer
He might have been, he might have.
Rich Davis
Been left out of the hall of.
Steve Covino
Fame because of it.
Rich Davis
And you know what?
Steve Covino
That's huge.
Rich Davis
And not only that, but there's a monetary attachment to that. If you're, if you're a Hall of Famer. There could have been more money in.
Dan Beyer
It for him afterlife.
Rich Davis
But hanging on to something like your point, it's been broken several times since. But at the time, that was a big deal, and he was.
Dan Beyer
And he was a big deal in.
Rich Davis
The sense that he was one of.
Dan Beyer
The most extreme players I've ever seen, and I'm a Jets fan.
Rich Davis
But you, when you watch games and.
Dan Beyer
See how good he really was, he.
Rich Davis
Should be in the hall, number one.
Dan Beyer
Number two, he is nuts. Number three, he's the kind of guy.
Rich Davis
That can be grading on your nerves, but so is Kurt Schilling, and they're.
Dan Beyer
Keeping him out of the hall.
Rich Davis
And I'm not a Red Sox fan, so.
Steve Covino
No. That's great perspective. Great call, man. Thank you, Bruno. I appreciate that. That's really the nail on the head, though, Rich. Like people ask him, why aren't you in the hall of Fame? And he tries to figure out why. He's not going to say, because I'm a nut job. He's like, because they took my record away. That's a lot to live with.
Dan Beyer
Did you ever watch Castano Girls?
Steve Covino
Yes.
Dan Beyer
You brought it up a few times. What was the point? It was like former NFL star and his like hot wife and good looking.
Steve Covino
Daughter was with them anymore.
Dan Beyer
Oh.
Steve Covino
So again, like, I think he dealt with.
Rich Davis
Really followed the daughters.
Steve Covino
Yeah, follow the daughters. So wait, he just had the name.
Dan Beyer
He didn't even get a piece of that. The reality pie?
Steve Covino
No, I don't think so.
Dan Beyer
And he didn't get the sack record. Okay.
Rich Davis
If you still have the second or third most sacks in a season, you still have like a record of sorts, why would that keep you out of.
Steve Covino
The hall of Fame? But even if it's not true, and that's his reasoning as to why he's not in the hall of Fame, that's tough to live with. Again, this is. This is his life. That's his career. Let's go to Truckee in Connecticut. You're on the Cavino and Rich show. This Mark Gastineau stuff that's gone viral today. It's kind of interesting.
Rich Davis
Oh, Ted and Truckee.
Dan Beyer
Truckee, California. All right. What's up?
Rich Davis
What's up?
Steve Covino
Hey, buddy.
Rich Davis
I've heard about some words like wackadoodle and nut job and sad and crazy.
Dan Beyer
And, you know, that may, you know.
Rich Davis
May or may not be true.
Steve Covino
Right.
Rich Davis
But there's, you know, put it in perspective a little bit more to unpack here. You know, all pain is equal, right? Whether you're, whether you're rich and powerful.
Dan Beyer
Or poor and homeless, whatever.
Rich Davis
I mean, you could be the most powerful person in the world and, you know, be all bummed because you got orange skin and daddy issues and inferior already. Complex, right? But suffering is suffering.
Dan Beyer
So no matter reason, no matter why.
Rich Davis
With all that said, you think about all the resources and money that's put into this documentary, and now it's sports talk. Meanwhile, there's like, you know, genocide, plural in the world.
Dan Beyer
There's subway murderers allowed and so much.
Rich Davis
More that matters instead of this zero value topic polluting my white noise distraction.
Dan Beyer
Of sports talk radio while I, you.
Rich Davis
Know, while I weed to the male gossip and commercial barking while I wait for actual sports news.
Dan Beyer
You seem like a fun guy to hang with.
Steve Covino
Yeah. You know, I was on your side until the end of that conversation.
Rich Davis
That quickly took a turn.
Steve Covino
Yeah, I took like a hard left.
Dan Beyer
Did he write that down, you think?
Steve Covino
Probably that was Pat Noswell from Big.
Rich Davis
Top of the Hat. Should we talk about genocide?
Dan Beyer
Like, do we go that direction? Coming up next, genocide and world wars going on in the world.
Rich Davis
Kobe, what's better? When he was Truckee in Connecticut.
Steve Covino
Yeah. What happened? What happened to the Truckee met at the beach.
Rich Davis
The next caller is in Connecticut.
Dan Beyer
Let's go to Greg in Connecticut. Greg, you're on. What's up, buddy?
Rich Davis
Man, that's a tough call to follow.
Steve Covino
Not really. Anything you say is going to be better than that. Winging it, man. You're fine.
Rich Davis
Hey, so you guys have me thinking, like, as far as the sack record, I don't know where it ranks, but.
Dan Beyer
I am like, I'm.
Rich Davis
If DiMaggio's record were broken with someone, I don't know, laying a bunt in the third baseman, slowly going to it just so it's not an error. And. And that's how the record.
Steve Covino
I would Be livid.
Dan Beyer
You know what? It's a thank you, Greg, because there you are. Fill in the blank. Because I was trying to think of an equal scenario in another sport and that's a great example. If someone had the 56 game hitting streak and they were on, they were stuck on 56, are they going to beat DiMaggio? The guy lays a bunt down third, the third base line and the third baseman takes a real slow, lays it, you know, like, like a lazy jog up to it and infield hit. Like.
Steve Covino
Yeah, when you, when you watch it back. It was a weak way to get the record.
Dan Beyer
It really was downplaying the significance of the sacrifice along the way.
Rich Davis
What about all the work done to get up to that point?
Steve Covino
Right, right. So again, yeah, you see a guy and you're like, man, get over it. But in reality, you gotta think of the reality. I admit and acknowledge the first reaction to that is like, get over it, dude. But you're telling this guy to something that meant the world to him.
Dan Beyer
What's up, everybody?
Rich Davis
Ad Nan Burke here to tell you.
Dan Beyer
About a new podcast from iHeart podcast in the National Hockey League. It's NHL unscripted with Virk and Demers.

Very few companies who go viral are like, totally prepared for what that means.
Steve Covino
And Zoe Tillman, senior legal reporter, Courts.
Rich Davis

Steve Covino
A hot mess.
Rich Davis
So listen to Moms who Puck, a production of I Heart women's sports and Deep Blue sports and entertainment on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports. I'm Rufus Griscom, host of the Next Big Idea. Each week on the show I sit down with one of the world's leading thinkers and together we try to answer a big question. I'm talking about people like Bill Gates.
Dan Beyer
Let's not let people with mal intent.
Rich Davis
Benefit from having a better AI. Michael Lewis. I am very self consciously running towards pleasure. That's what draws me to material in the first place. Peter Attia. Exercise is the single most important drug we have. And Kim Scott. You know, I spent a lot of my early parts of my career feeling a little bit miserable. And so to me this is the interest in radical candor. How can we achieve things together and enjoy doing it and build great relationships while we do it?
Steve Covino
Listen to the next big idea on.
Rich Davis
The iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Dan Beyer
You want to play. Last one standing.
Steve Covino
Let's do it.
Dan Beyer
Let's go.
Steve Covino
The game that sweeping the nation. You have five seconds to battle for your sports trivia.
Dan Beyer
Life, man.
Rich Davis
Ah, I got. Yeah, I don't got it.
Steve Covino
Put your electronic devices down and pick your sports knowledge. It's CNR's last one standing.
Dan Beyer
Last one standing.
Rich Davis
All right, I have four categories ready to go and if needed, a tiebreaker.
Dan Beyer
No.
Rich Davis
Yeah. Because of our schedule, we haven't got to play this game in a few weeks.
Steve Covino
That's because Iron Mike was here yesterday.
Rich Davis
Each contestant is going to get five seconds to stay alive in the round. If you run out of time or you answer incorrectly, Iowa. Sam will escort you out with his big bad buzzer. We keep battling until you are the last one standing. If you win two of the rounds, you are the top dog. Here are the contestants. Three time winner, Steve Covino. Right over there.
Steve Covino
I mean, I'm always a winner. I just won this game quite a few times. Yeah.
Rich Davis
To the right of him, six time winner, Rich Davis.
Dan Beyer
Yeah. Look at that.
Rich Davis
The leader in the clubhouse, 22 time winner, Dan Byer. Hello. And let's go to the studio lines to see who's going to play for a CNR stainless steel Swiggy. All right, buyer, I'll use you for this. Would you love to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, Miami, Florida, Phoenix, Arizona or Carson City, Nevada? Wow, talk about destinations.
Dan Beyer
I know.
Rich Davis
Let's go to Carson City. Carson City, that is Scott. What up, Scotty?
Steve Covino
Hey, Scott.
Rich Davis
Hey, Scott.
Dan Beyer
Yeah. I can't deal with this.
Rich Davis
Next. Let me go to Phoenix then. Sorry.
Dan Beyer
Sorry.
Rich Davis
Scott.
Steve Covino
Man, I just wrote Scott in Carson City down.
Rich Davis
I know. Me, too. All right, Patrick in Phoenix. What's up?
Dan Beyer
What's up? Yes.
Rich Davis
There we go. Patrick, right away. Now we're talking. Quickly. What do you do for a living there in Phoenix? Oh, bro, I do.
Dan Beyer
Pretty exciting work.
Rich Davis
We were exciting, but his phone sounds almost as bad.
Dan Beyer
All right, let's go.
Rich Davis
Let's play the game. First category. All right, first category. Pig Skin Paradise. You have five seconds to name an NFL team. Who is top 12 for the most Super bowl appearances. Top 12? Most Super bowl appearances. Covino, you're up first.
Steve Covino
49Ers.
Rich Davis
Patrick.
Dan Beyer
Patrick. Dude, is everyone brain dead? What are we doing?
Rich Davis
Patrick, you gotta wait until I call your name, okay?
Dan Beyer
Patrick. All right. All right, bro.
Steve Covino
Good. We like you. Okay. All right, I'll go. I'll start off with.
Rich Davis
Ready?
Steve Covino
Covino. Go, Steelers. Steelers.
Rich Davis
Number four with eight. All right, Rich.
Dan Beyer
New England Patriots.
Rich Davis
Patriots. Number one, 11. Bayer. We're gonna do Patrick a solid cowbo. Number five with eight. All right, Patrick, now you can say it. I'll go 49ers.
Steve Covino
Number two.
Rich Davis
Nobody saw it coming. All right, Covino, back to you.
Steve Covino
Let's go with the Eagles. Eagles not on the list.
Rich Davis
No, Rich, nice try.
Dan Beyer
The Denver Broncos.
Rich Davis
Broncos.
Steve Covino
Eight appearances.
Rich Davis
Fire. Giants. Giants.
Steve Covino
Five appearances.
Rich Davis
Patrick.
Steve Covino
Arizona. Cardinals. Cardinals. So, so excited. But not on the list.
Rich Davis
Big dreaming, bro. Rich.
Dan Beyer
Washington Redskins number.
Rich Davis
Oh, yeah.
Steve Covino
Five.
Rich Davis
Five appearances.
Steve Covino
That was a good one.
Rich Davis
Yep. Buyer. Buffalo Bills. Bills not on the list.
Steve Covino
Oh.
Rich Davis
Rich wins that round.
Steve Covino
Wow.
Dan Beyer
So, DB the threshold was five or more.
Rich Davis
Yeah, that's five or more.
Dan Beyer
I had the Bills written down as my next one because I thought that was the Chiefs.
Rich Davis
Raiders were on there. Chiefs, Dolphins, Packers.
Steve Covino
Anyone say packers and Rams?
Rich Davis
All right, second category now, Saquon's Chase. You have five seconds to name an NFL running back who has had one of the greatest single seasons for rushing yards ever. We'll take the top 17. And Patrick, in Phoenix, you're up first. Go. Chris Johnson. Yes. Number seven, buyer. Eric Dickerson. Number one, Rich.
Dan Beyer
Hey, Twitter world. O.J. simpson.
Rich Davis
O.J. simpson. Number eight, Covino.
Steve Covino
Barry Sanders.
Rich Davis
In peace. Barry Sanders. Number. Yes. Number. Number four, Patrick. Franco Harris. Franco Harris. In the top 17, Beyer. Adrian Peterson. Adrian Peterson at number two. Yes, sir. Rich Little.
Dan Beyer
Mile High. Salute. Terrell Davis.
Steve Covino
Terrell Davis.
Rich Davis
Number six, Covino.
Steve Covino
Walter Payton.
Rich Davis
Walter Pay. Peyton. Number 16 back to Beyer. Derrick Henry. Derrick Henry. Number five. Rich. Three. Two.
Dan Beyer
Jamal Anderson.
Rich Davis
Jamal Anderson is on the list, number 17 right at the bottom. Cut off right at the bottom. Oh, wow, what a. What a poll.
Steve Covino
Covino, Latanian, Tomlinson, Ladin.
Rich Davis
Not on the list. Oh, just under the real lt. Yeah. That's a good guess though. Honestly. That was a good one. Fire. Is Priest Holmes on the list? He is not. That means Rich is the last one standing.
Dan Beyer
I had today. I had Emmett Smith and Alvin Kamara come to mind.
Rich Davis
No, Emmet Smith isn't there.
Dan Beyer
No Emmett Smith.
Rich Davis
Aran Foster. That's a good Earl Campbell. Okay.
Dan Beyer
Wow.
Rich Davis
Let's see. Amon Green, Ricky Williams.
Steve Covino
Ricky Williams, Sean Alexander.
Rich Davis
Yeah, Barber.
Steve Covino
Oh, by the way, Rich, you earned that one, man. You pulled some.
Rich Davis
Yeah, man. That is Rich's seventh win.
Steve Covino
Nice.
Rich Davis
And Patrick and Phoenix, we appreciate you playing the game with us.
Steve Covino
Thanks, buddy.
Dan Beyer
DB Sean Alexander, your Seahawk. Have a good one.
Steve Covino
Thank you, buddy. Play again next time. Appreciate you your energy. Remember, we usually do trivia on Tuesday, Mondays and Tuesdays here on the show. So thank you for playing along, Cavino and Rich.
Dan Beyer
All right, let's go to Dan Beyer for an update.
Steve Covino
What's up, db?
Rich Davis
What's up guys? The big news, Major League Baseball is that Max Freed has signed an eight year deal with $218 million with the new York Yankees. It's the most money ever given to a left handed pitcher. Max Freed heading to the Bronx. The Toronto Blue Jays acquired second baseman Andres Jimenez in a trade with the Cleveland Guardians. While the Nationals won the draft lottery. They'll hold the first overall pick in the 2025 Major League Baseball draft. Class of 2025. Top basketball prospect AJ Devonstas committed to playing hoops at BYU tonight. NBA cup quarterfinals take place. Bucks taking on the Magic Thunder entertaining Dallas. The Miami Heat are listening to offers for Jimmy Butler while Kawhi Leonard returned to practice today as he has yet to play in a game this season.
Dan Beyer
Talking Jokic, talking Jokic, he said after, after the Nuggets took a whooping. He said, wake up call. In my country you get paid less after a stretch like this. And the reality is you go to other places.
Steve Covino
You know what I say to that? Don't be ridiculous.
Dan Beyer
I say if he dies, he dies. I say, listen, there is something to be said. I know it rubbed people the wrong way, but Jokic scored career high 56 and finished the game with just two assists and essentially tried to do this by himself.
Rich Davis
They lost to the worst team in the NBA was one of the rubs.
Dan Beyer
I mean they were shorthanded with injuries. It was A couple days ago. But he did afterwards say, in my country, where I'm coming from, after this kind of stretch, you're going to get a paycheck that's a little bit less than you are worth. So maybe that's the way we need to do it. Maybe a little motivation that way.
Steve Covino
Yeah. Clearly everybody like Juan Soto motivated by money. And you see a lot of these people led up in the NFL, they say career decisions, right? They let up because they're getting their money or they're trying to get their money. There's a lot of players, especially in the NBA. We talked about it recently, Rich, like why is the NBA broken? Why are the ratings down 28%? Because a lot of these guys got the bag and they're hot dogging it.
Rich Davis
That E word, remember what was the E word? Entitled.
Steve Covino
Oh yeah, entitled. The entitlement of some of these players.
Rich Davis
Could you imagine if you got paid per point, rebound, assist?
Steve Covino
Yeah, you'd be playing a lot harder for sure.
Rich Davis
You'd be diving on the floor.
Dan Beyer
When you talk about some of these incentives, I love, I was talking to one of my buddies the other day about how fantasy sports players hate the end of regular seasons because you never know. You know, that's why they do the playoffs earlier, because guys rest and the final week, I love when they come at that list of who's going to hit incentives. And all of a sudden you watch guys like, wait, this guy needs four catches for 62 yards. You damn well know that guy's going to be like, get me the ball. I love incentive based contracts. I love when a pitcher is told, you hit 200 innings, you're going to double your base salary.
Steve Covino
I think we'd see a lot more production just in life if that's the way it worked.
Dan Beyer
Now I hate Cavino. When people say, well, if all the owners decide to pay everyone less, first of all it's collusion, right? But, but if they decided that these guys, you know, wouldn't be paid so much, I think incentive based contracts would be better for everyone except the players. Right? But if the players delivered those incentives would be huge. What if, what if this max free deal with the Yankees, what if his salary swayed like a $5 million degree based on innings pitched whip era? That to me that's wildly awesome.
Steve Covino
I'd say that would be fair and it would make more sense. But it's hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube. As they say, you can't move in reverse when you're pampering the hell out of these dudes. And you're giving Juan Soto $765 million.
Dan Beyer
What is the average for Soto?
Steve Covino
You can't just all of a sudden like now change how we're paying people. That's where owners messed up. You gave them way too much. And that these players are making money for your company. We get all that. I'm just saying there should have been ways to incentivize a stronger performance. Now you're getting athletes hot dogging it and lackluster performances. And you get Jokic coming from an old school, different place where, yo, guys, you're not playing as hard as you could. We just got embarrassed by the worst team in the NBA. Hey, I don't blame him for speaking out like that because he's the only guy playing a win. He scored 56 points. Let me tell you, there's nothing more frustrating in life when you're pulling all the weight and no one else is helping out. You know, that's what he's doing.
Dan Beyer
You know who would love this more than anything? And why'd you look at Danny me and Spot when you said that?
Steve Covino
I'm just saying I think everybody can relate to that. Where it's like, hey, man, I'm the one working here. What are you guys doing? You're slacking. Yeah, whatever that.
Dan Beyer
It's whatever that is the class project when you're the kid that did all the work, right?
Steve Covino
Exactly.
Dan Beyer
Let's say Juan Soto, the average, let's just say it's around 50 million a. Again, you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube. But what if it was like, all right, Juan, Mr. Soto, you're going to make $40 million a year if you bet over 285, add five mil. If you hit 40 more home runs, add five mil. Over 100 RBI, add five mil, it could be worth more than 50.
Steve Covino
Hell yeah.
Dan Beyer
But you start at 40. Yo, Rodon, max freed all your pitchers. Hey, if your ERA is three or.
Steve Covino
Under, I mean, by the way, this is sports. This is how you motivate people, man. Not only in sports, but in real life. If we had those sort of incentives, my goodness, you don't think you'd see a better work effort here at the studio, you know, at the restaurant, at the office, the factory. You'd be seeing people really trying to push to get ahead because now they're in control of their destiny and their money. What about it's like mission based workers, you know, they're always pushing a little harder. What about other people.
Dan Beyer
What if you told linebackers? What if you told Fred Warner? What if you told Max Crosby? What if he told either Bosa? Hey, for every strip of the ball, for every turnover you cause $3 million, $2 million. Hey, every time you're a running back that fumbles the ball and it's turned over to the other team, if you don't retain possession, you lose $500,000.
Steve Covino
Dude, what about Spirit Airlines recently getting called out for $10 for every oversized bag?
Dan Beyer
Exactly. So listen, we'll touch on this maybe more tomorrow. Until then, have a great night. Arrivederci, baby.
Steve Covino
We'll see you in the promised land. Good night, guys.
Rich Davis
What's up, everybody? Adnan Burke here to tell you about a new podcast.

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – "The Best Of Covino & Rich" (Released December 11, 2024)
The Herd with Colin Cowherd presents its episode titled "The Best Of Covino & Rich," hosted by Steve Covino and Rich Davis under the umbrella of iHeartPodcasts and The Volume. This episode delves deep into current sports narratives, offering insightful discussions, spirited debates, and candid opinions on some of the most talked-about topics in the sports world.
The episode kicks off with an intense discussion about Juan Soto's surprising decision to join the New York Mets over the Yankees. Covino and Davis dissect the multifaceted reasons behind Soto's choice, emphasizing financial motivations and team dynamics.
Financial Considerations and Suite Negotiations
Covino highlights the financial negotiations that may have influenced Soto’s decision:
“He said, I want a suite for my family... based on my research, Rich, suites could be about $25,000 a game, totaling $20 million in perks over the 16-year offer they gave him.” ([06:38])
Critique of Soto’s Character and Team Chemistry
The hosts express skepticism about Soto’s character, suggesting that his high demands could disrupt team chemistry:
“He's a diva with crazy demands. When you're paying someone this much and rolling out the red carpet, you expect him to produce when he doesn't.” ([07:55])
Comparisons with Other Yankees Players
Comparing Soto to established Yankees stars like Aaron Judge, Covino argues that Soto's expectations are excessive:
“You can tell me this guy's above them.” ([07:55])
A significant portion of the episode centers on Mark Gastineau, the former New York Jets defensive legend, and his portrayal in the upcoming ESPN “30 for 30” documentary titled "The New York Sack Exchange."
Gastineau’s Sack Record Controversy
Covino and Davis debate the legitimacy of Gastineau's sack record and the infamous play involving Brett Favre and Michael Strahan:
“Gastineau has sour grapes about the whole situation. Baseball is a team sport... How much he brings to the team when he gets all this specialty treatment.” ([13:17])
Emotional and Psychological Impact
The discussion delves into Gastineau’s prolonged resentment over losing his sack record and its impact on his legacy:
“He wants the sack back. All these guys are excited about playing with him, but he seems like a very selfish player.” ([15:00])
Fan and Media Reactions
The hosts reflect on how Gastineau's actions have been received by fans and the media, questioning his motivations and character flaws:
“He's above the Mets. That's what made the team magical last year.” ([18:28])
The hosts provide a roundup of the latest MLB news, including significant player movements and contracts.
Max Freed’s Historic Contract with the Yankees
Dan Beyer announces Max Freed’s unprecedented eight-year, $218 million deal with the New York Yankees, marking the largest guarantee ever for a left-handed pitcher:
“Max Freed, eight years, $218 million deal.” ([34:07])
Trades and Draft Lottery
Updates include the Toronto Blue Jays acquiring second baseman Andres Jimenez from the Cleveland Guardians and the Nationals winning the draft lottery to secure the first overall pick in the 2025 MLB draft.
The episode transitions to NBA discussions, focusing on Nikola Jokić’s comments post a series-defining game.
