Joe Rogan
The volume. I gotta tell you, man, this cooking with Volk, it's fun.
Alexander Volkanovski
We still need to tee it up, man.
Joe Rogan
We need to tee it up. But I'm talking about some of the stuff that I have seen you cook. You were cooking some the other day. What were you making? Was it you shot some or you fished and you shot something?
Alexander Volkanovski
Okay, yeah, yeah. So we did won the farm. So we end up getting, getting a fish that was caught and then I end up filleting that. And then my dad wanted. My dad seen a deer and he wanted to make sausages. So he's. Because the week before he tried to shoot one and he missed. So he's like, he's like, I want you to shoot it. I'm like, all right, one sec. So I was in front of the camera, so I'm like, oh, my dad just told me about a deer. I'm gonna go over there, shoot that because we're gonna need it for some sausages and some meat. And I'll be back. So literally through the episode, we did that, but then with that deer, we made sausages. 110kg of sausages.
Joe Rogan
All sausages?
Alexander Volkanovski
Yeah, all sausages with it. But obviously you end up having a pork meat and pork fat in it as well.
Joe Rogan
So what do you do, what do you do with all that meat? Do you just store it?
Alexander Volkanovski
Well, we, we had our cousins, had some of my cousins, Elaine, Christopher, who did the sausages with us, and then we just sort of shared them. That's crazy between the lot of us. There.
Joe Rogan
That's crazy. Are you. Are you enjoying doing that? Like, what was. Where did the idea for that comes from? Because there are a lot of times where fighters. Guys, quiet. There are a lot of times where fighters want to start doing these other things to kind of show their personality. But when I watch you in that setting, it seems like you're really enjoying that. Where'd that love for cooking and all that come from?
Alexander Volkanovski
I was just around the family, like in all the family barbecues, and they used to get the lamb and pigs on the rotisseries and all that and just do big barbecues, big family barbecues. And I would always help. I'd make them marinade and I would help, and they just try and take over the barbecue here and there. And that's sort of where it all found a love for it. And then during camp camps and that through my career, like, I had to cook for myself a lot of the time, especially when I was traveling. Then I started recording it, and then people just absolutely loved it. It was crazy because even at the. The start when I just do my own dodgy little videos, yeah, it was some of my most viewed videos at the time. They were getting millions of views just for me doing, like, packets of chips. Well, you just call them crisps. What do you call them?
Joe Rogan
Potato chips.
Alexander Volkanovski
Potato chips, yeah. So packing, crushing that, putting it on chicken wings and stuff. It would get millions of views, you know, very early in my career. And I'm just like, wow, this is cool. So people obviously love it. It just started off your stories, getting interaction. Then I end up making my own posts, and now it's its own identity and, you know, it's gone nuts.
Joe Rogan
But you've got a million followers on Cooking with Volk. That's crazy for a person to get over a million people subscribing to what they're doing on their personal stuff for the fighting that's not as out there because you're a world champion, but for people to watch you cooking, having over a million people following that channel, it' crazy for me. And I. I can't imagine you thought it would be that successful.
Alexander Volkanovski
No, no, not really. I mean, there was even a question where we sort of like, I was talking to the team and we're saying, you know, we want to have it to have its own identity and separate, like, you know what I mean? And. And I'm like, oh, I don't know. Like, you know what I mean? Like, I was thinking, will it work? And I guess I didn't. Back. Back It. But then we were like, all right, we'll do it.
Joe Rogan
But.
Alexander Volkanovski
And what I was worried about is the time is going to. You need to be so consistent. How am I going to have the time? But lucky, I've got a great team behind me that help a lot with that. So I was like, I can't think of recipes every day. I can't get all the groceries and all that and do this all the time. But no, no, we'll take care of that. We'll make sure we get all the, you know, so I can keep training because I'm still a fighter. Yeah, you are. Maybe later I can help with that. But, yeah, just got a great team around me, and we're like, oh, we'll do it. I'm like, all right, if that's the case, let's go.
Joe Rogan
How. Okay, you're right. You are a fighter, and you're still the world champion. Talk to me about winning that world championship back and the feeling that you went through after. Right. Because it was a rough stretch right before you ultimately became the world champion again. How did you handle it? And what. What did that. What was that feeling of relief after you not only won again, but became the world champ again?
Alexander Volkanovski
Yeah, I mean, the biggest. It wasn't just being champion. I think it was just. Again, I just love, you know, when there's challenges come your way and just. Just accomplishing the challenge, getting over the hurdle and getting. Being rewarded for. For that. Right. Like, so you go through camp and it's going to be hard coming off the KO losses, the big break, you know, there's some adversities through there. Your head's going to go places and all that. And I wanted to, you know, not only show my kids, but show the world that, like, anything can be done. For me to be able to accomplish that, that's means so much to me. Me just winning the belt back. I. But me being able to jump those massive hurdles and, you know, and, you know, and just accomplish those challenges or, you know, you know, getting. Getting on top of that, it just meant so much to me.
Joe Rogan
When we were sitting in Miami, you and I spoke about there was a stat at the time, 37 and never win. And you're like, I promise you I'm gonna do this, and then it won't be such a big deal when a guy that's a little bit older wins in a world championship fight. You did that. Now, we've seen guys since do it also, obviously, Justin Gaethje just last weekend. But when you go into that fight. And so many people, Volk are talking about what the expectation is, what the outcome would seem to be leaning towards. Does that motivate you?
Alexander Volkanovski
Yeah, man, it always has. I've always. A lot of people doubted me. I've always. I've always had that underdog mentality that I always talk about.
Joe Rogan
Right.
Alexander Volkanovski
Like, I've always. Even when I played rugby league, I was tiny. I was playing the front row position, which is where the biggest people play.
Joe Rogan
Yeah.
Alexander Volkanovski
And I was tiny, so you would have people laughing at me. And I've always had to hold my own. And so it's always just been who I am. And I've always felt like I've had to prove myself and I've started to realize I do my best work when it's like that. So I love it.
Joe Rogan
But how do you keep that whenever you were as dominant a champion as you were? Because now it's almost like, how do you find a way. Michael Jordan in the last dance, right. He went to Seattle and when he walked into a restaurant, the coach just didn't say hi and he was like, that's all I needed to make it personal. Right. How do. How do you create that? Whenever you are dominating in the way.
Alexander Volkanovski
That you did, it's funny. Like, you're going to have challenges in front of you. I'm always going to respect those challenges as well, so that helps. But even when I feel like I am the favorite and, you know, a lot of people, like, oh, I almost put my opponents on a pedestal. I will only focus on what they're great at and like, you know, their best performance, they can give me troubles here and you can find your way around it. And that's just how it is now. It's. So as I'm saying, right. I'm talking to you through that title, Reynolds. I had to sort of find way and sort of almost fake it.
Joe Rogan
Like, you know, creation that's not there.
Alexander Volkanovski
Yeah, almost. Yeah.
Joe Rogan
But now you don't have to. You don't have to fake anything.
Alexander Volkanovski
I don't. I really don't. And it's easy for me because now it's like I am the old guy. I am like in my last fight, I was coming off 2k losses. Yeah. A massive break. I am older. This is the new generation, you know, and stuff like that. So I was like, sweet, like, you know what I mean? Like, yeah, like, I'm asking these questions too. So I don't need to try and find motivation, you know, to, you know, to fire myself up and doubt myself. Like, yeah, the doubt is there and it should be, but I believe that I'm going to get through and I'll show you, so. And then Even now, I'm 37 years old, you know what I mean? And the last fight, obviously I won, but he still had it moments and, you know, you know, is he going to make the right adjustments? Can he land those shots? Can I take those shots? You know, am I going to slow down? I know I haven't, but people are going to think that. And again, I'm 37 years old, so I don't really need to look for it. I am. There is some challenges that are going to be there, but I'm good at getting through them.
Joe Rogan
Was there something. Was there anything surprising in that first Diego Lopez fight? I thought personally, and I'm pretty sure you've seen it back, I. If I can recall correctly, we were all very surprised at how he wasn't trying to go and do more. Were you surprised by how measured he was in his approach, being that he was so reckless before, but then when you go back and watch it again, the reason he couldn't get going is because of the things you were doing. You did a lot of great things in there to really, like, stop him from being as reckless as he was. Was that. Was that surprising to you or was that the expectation, knowing that you were going to fight the way that you fought?
Alexander Volkanovski
Well, that was sort of the expectation. Like, you know, again, this is. This is what's fun. Like, is he going to make the right adjustments now? I was able to do that. Like, a lot of people are going to be like, oh, he's got to let his hands go at first. You know, as you said, you watch back and you realize. But, yeah, like, if he did a little bit better of a job of cutting off and getting himself in front of me, rather than, like, you know, following and all that sort of stuff, maybe he could have put himself more in that position. But, I mean, I'm. Even when he. I did get caught in front of him, we drilled a lot of certain combos and things that we'll do, knowing what would probably come back. And I was quite successful like that. So he did have his moments. But that's what's exciting about this one. A lot of people. How do you take the rematch? Most like, all right, well, I'm. I'm gonna. I'm expecting him to. I don't know if he can in that short amount of time. I don't know if he's capable.
Joe Rogan
Yeah.
Alexander Volkanovski
Of making massive adjustments, but I'm preparing for a Diego that's made the right adjustments, and I'm preparing for the same Diego as well, because I don't know if he's capable. Even if he does. Oh, I'm going to do a better job at this. It isn't just as simple as cutting off. You do it wrong, you could put yourself in serious danger. You make things even easier for me. So, you know, that's why we'll see what happens.
Joe Rogan
The fight IQ is what gets these guys.
Alexander Volkanovski
Yeah.
Joe Rogan
Your brain in the octagon really can give guys problems. Were you surprised that it's Diego Lopez again? Were you surprised, especially after Larn Murphy did what he did to Aaron Pico? You publicly went on and said, okay, Laron, it seems like you would be the guy. Lord knows what's going on with movs are Vloev. I mean, this dude, there's one guy getting done worse than freaking Armand Tsarukian, and it's a Vloev. Like, he hasn't even gotten any type of traction towards going towards a championship fight. Were you surprised, though, that it was Diego Lopez again?
Alexander Volkanovski
Yeah. So, like, I was a bit not surprised if Diego's. I eased into that. Right. It wasn't like, all of a sudden, what's Diego? I eased into it. So I. I wanted Mobza straight after my fight. I called for that, and I was like, yeah, it's got to be him. But then they were like, nah, nah, we want him to fight again. And that's when he was going to fight Jean Silva. I'm like, oh, okay. And then that fight didn't happen. Then it was the LaRone. And then I even put a tweet out straight after I go see you in December.
Joe Rogan
Exactly. To lerone Murphy, because he finally got a finish. Because that would have seemed to have been the thing that was actually stopping him from getting the title fight, because he could be a tad bit boring.
Alexander Volkanovski
Yeah.
Joe Rogan
At times.
Alexander Volkanovski
And, you know, how active is he? And, you know, are you selective with your. Who you want to fight and all that? Because these things can, you know, we know it matters. You know, the UFC are going to remember those things. If you're saying no to opponents, you're not active. You know what I mean? That's stuff that they're going to be like, can I rely you as a champion? But him doing that, I thought he took a fight on short notice. He's probably trying to finish right those wrongs and then gets a big knockout. I'm like, all right. He did pretty much what they wanted him to do. So I thought it could be him. But then when I found out, I'm like, oh, so it's a Diego. We want to watch Jean Silva and Diego. So now I'm like, oh, maybe it's one of these.
Joe Rogan
Maybe it's one of these.
Alexander Volkanovski
Maybe they're waiting for John Silva. So I'm like, okay, so that's not guaranteed for. For LaRue Murphy. So then, you know, because I was sort of training for him, then when they said that, I'm like, all right, could be Silva. Let's start having a look at this. And then he ended up winning. Lopez ended up winning. And then. So is that going to be Laron? We're like, oh, we don't know yet. I'm like, they might be thinking Lopez. So that was maybe a bit of a surprise then, but then by the time it was announced, it's like I was already, you know, preparing for him because I was thinking it could be Laron or. Or Lopez.
Joe Rogan

When you, a guy who has that great fight iq, have spent time inside the Octon with someone, it's proven you get better. My son was at the third Max Holloway fight because, you know, Max and I are good friends. And, you know, he was. He was almost crying because you just were. So you had separated so much from him. First off, I don't know how you did that to Max because he's so good. But also, you just did better in fight two. After the first part of the fight, you readjusted and you went and fought a beautiful fight. Fight three, you just won almost the entirety of the fight. How does this fight look compared to last fight with Diego Lopez, which, by the way, in my opinion, that wasn't necessarily a close fight. Right. He might have had his moments, and he fought better down the stretch than the fourth or fifth round, but you won pretty convincingly early through the fight. What does this fight this weekend look like with Diego?
Alexander Volkanovski
For me, yeah, I think I just want to be even more dominant. You know, he did have his moments. I don't want him to have his moments. This one, you know, there was damage. He did. He still applied some damage on me, which I'm not happy with. I want to. And I had to take a bigger break because of that. You know what I mean? I wanted a quick turnaround. I couldn't. Why so. Well, just a couple of things, like, I. Oh, my eye. And that. Because I lost vision in the fourth, and there was a few things that we had to take care of. But. Yeah, so, you know, so that. That postponed. Well, not postponed. That delayed my. My comeback. And then. Yeah, so it was a. I want to go out there and take minimal damage. Go out there and really set a statement and show people that I'm still that guy. You know what I mean? Yeah. This new era is coming, but I've still got these guys. And then I want to quick, reasonably quick turnaround to fight Laro Murphy or Movza.
Joe Rogan
I was wondering about that. At 37, if you feel like, man, I got to be turning the page. I can't stay away from April to January, February. That's 10 months. Right. For a guy like you who's starting to get a little older, if you want to. Because as we age, right. You start to feel happens more. It's more apparent that certain things are moving. Not at 37, though. At 37, I swear to God, I still felt like I was as good as I ever was. That's why. I don't know they make such a big deal about you guys being 37. Maybe it's because you're smaller and fighting is harder down in those weight classes, but at 37, I fought Jon Jones. You know, when I fought Jon Jones the first time, I was 34. Then I fought him at 36, it's like I never felt like I wasn't in my athletic prime. So 37, you shouldn't start to feel those ways. Unless fighting is just way different down at the lower weight classes.
Alexander Volkanovski
I mean, I guess that just depends. Well, they do say that, right?
Joe Rogan
Like, you guys are better fighters. Yeah, you guys are better fighters. The smaller guys are better all around. If you had all of your skill and I take the best heavyweight with all of his skill and put you guys bowed at like £180, you'd wipe him out. Because that. You guys are just better in terms of overall skills.
Alexander Volkanovski
Well, I mean, because I guess this is what I always say, like a think of when it comes to heavyweights and all that being big, you've got a lot of options.
Joe Rogan
Yes.
Alexander Volkanovski
For sports.
Joe Rogan
Yes.
Alexander Volkanovski
Yeah. So, like, you know, especially in America, you go there, the NFL scouting you.
Joe Rogan
Yeah.
Alexander Volkanovski
Your basketball and all that sort of stuff. For us small guys, we're either we're a jockey or we're a fighter. You know what I mean? So we don't have many options. So.
Joe Rogan
All the.
Alexander Volkanovski
All the best. This is the only sport where we get to do. But they even say, like, right. The prime for. As the heavier weights. Your prime is later in your.
Joe Rogan
Yeah, it is. It is.
Alexander Volkanovski
Yeah. They say that. Right. Like, maybe because it's. You don't need to worry so much about the explosiveness and pace. And because you get older and you slow down that little bit now, these Fast guys, you know what I mean? And, you know, I think that's where they. They get that from. And the numbers have shown that right, as well. So there is something to it. But. But for me, you know, I still feel fine. I'm getting through, like, yeah, can I do the exact same cancer I was doing five years ago? No. Like, I can't. Like, I've got to be careful with that.
Joe Rogan
But you don't need to.
Alexander Volkanovski
Exactly right. So I'm. My intensity is still there, so I'm still trying just as hard, but maybe the volume comes down and. But now I can rely on again, I'm going to rely on the experience fight iq, like I've always done. So that's always been a big part of my game anyway, so I don't need to change too much.
Joe Rogan
You know, what I've been noticing in a lot of the build is people talk about who's not going to be the champion this year, right? And a lot of people say Volkanovski. And people talk about maybe Volkanovsky will retire this year. Like, why is that conversation even a thing? When I don't think that that's a part of your reality right now, like retirement and being done with fighting, is it?
Alexander Volkanovski
No, no, exactly. Right. So, like, I told you, I want to go out this fight, not take damage and have a quick turnaround. Like, a reasonably quick turnaround. So that's my plans. I don't know where they exactly came from. Obviously, you're talking about, you know, you can tell everyone knows I'm 37 and fighting here in Sydney. I think people are just throwing that out there. But. But yeah, and, like, people are gonna. I do talk because I'm. I'm real. I'm a realist as well. So I, like, talk. I don't sit there and just pretend, oh, yeah, I've got another 10 years in me. Like, I'll talk when people go, like, yeah, I'm at the back end of my career. I am the old guy. I'm doing funny skits about it, right? Yeah, we'll see how, man. Like, if people are asking, like, you know, if. If things go horrendously wrong, all right, how many fights do I want to do with that? Right? Like, yeah, yeah, for sure. Exactly. So I'm gonna have them conversations because that's real. But I plan on winning and continuing that on. You know what I mean? So that's why. Because I have them conversations, you know, people are going to always be, oh, he's already thinking about this. You know, I was thinking about before the last time.
Joe Rogan
It's just a thing that most people will tap into.
Alexander Volkanovski
Yeah, exactly.
Joe Rogan
When you put it in the headline, that's what they latch on to.
Alexander Volkanovski
Well, I was having the same conversations before the last fight.
Joe Rogan
Yeah.
Alexander Volkanovski
And what happened? I went out there and what. I mean, so it's just, it's just. Yeah, I guess it does depend on the person. But like, I'm not sitting there having these conversations because of it being like, oh, I'm not going to even try. Like, I don't have that in me. I can only do 110 every time.
Joe Rogan
I was gonna say that, I was. Because for me, a guy like you, legacy matters. So you don't want to. It doesn't seem like you want to be the guy that's just hanging around this thing, fighting just to fight to make money. You want to be fighting for titles because all you've been is a world champion.
Alexander Volkanovski
Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. You know, I want to obviously just be successful. You know what I mean? You want to make that money. Money is a big part of it. But at the same time, your health is big as well.
Joe Rogan
Yeah.
Alexander Volkanovski
So if you're, you know, if you're, you know, if you're struggling, you know, I don't want to be that guy. You see people that are just taking damage after damage or like in, you know, knocked out after knocked out and at the end of their career, you know what I mean? Like, so that's where maybe a lot of people, they've seen that two back to back kos, like, ah, it's gonna.
Joe Rogan
Go, Thought it was over.
Alexander Volkanovski
Exactly. Right. So for me to bounce back, but, you know, if that was to keep rolling on, I ain't hanging around, you know what I mean? But smart, you know what I mean? I've showed that I was able to turn it around and I plan on keeping it in this direction.
Joe Rogan
It takes a special person to bounce back from that, become a world champion again. And this weekend, once again, you headline in Sydney against Diego Lopez. What can the fans expect from Alexander Volkanovski come Saturday night?
Alexander Volkanovski
Obviously, we know Lopez is going to bring it. I mean, the card is actually, we've got a lot of.
Joe Rogan
You think he's going to fight? You think he's going to take more chances this weekend?
Alexander Volkanovski
Well, he's going to, yeah, he's going to for sure. Even if he's thinking he's gonna try and use footwork and strategy and all that, that's gonna go even worse. For him. I think he know he should know that he's most dangerous when he is just trying to, you know his chances to try and knock me out. So he's gonna come and bring it. That's gonna open a lot of doors for me, but I think I can do this in better fashion.
Joe Rogan
Yeah.
Alexander Volkanovski
So expect a wild one, but one.
Joe Rogan

Expectations for the Rematch
“I’m preparing for a Diego that’s made the right adjustments, and I’m preparing for the same Diego as well…” — Volkanovski (10:50)

Surprise at Immediate Rematch
“At first I wanted [Movsar] straight after my fight… Then it was Lerone… and then Lopez ended up winning… By the time it was announced, it’s like I was already preparing for him…” — Volkanovski (11:51–13:41)
“At 37, you shouldn’t start to feel those ways. Unless fighting is just way different down at the lower weight classes.” — Joe Rogan (18:29)
“My intensity is still there, so I’m still trying just as hard, but maybe the volume comes down… now I can rely on the experience, fight IQ…” — Volkanovski (19:54)
“People talk about maybe Volkanovski will retire this year… that conversation [isn’t] a part of your reality right now, is it?” — Joe Rogan (20:10/20:32) “No, exactly right… I want to go out this fight, not take damage and have a quick turnaround… That’s my plans.” — Volkanovski (20:32)
“I’ll talk, I don’t sit there and just pretend… but I plan on winning and continuing that on.” — Volkanovski (21:28)
“If you’re struggling, you know, I don’t want to be that guy… just taking damage after damage… I ain’t hanging around, you know what I mean?” — Volkanovski (22:16/22:34)
“He did have his moments. I don’t want him to have his moments. This one… I want to go out there and take minimal damage… and really set a statement and show people that I’m still that guy.” — Volkanovski (16:51)
“[Lopez is] going to bring it… Even if he’s thinking he’s going to try and use footwork… that’s going to go even worse for him. He should know that his chances are to knock me out. That’s going to open a lot of doors for me, but I think I can do this in better fashion.” — Volkanovski (23:07)
On tough comebacks:
“It wasn’t just being champion. I love when there’s challenges… For me to be able to accomplish that, that’s means so much to me.” — Volkanovski (05:27)

On tactical evolution:
"Even when I feel like I am the favorite… I almost put my opponents on a pedestal... now it's… easy for me because... I am the old guy." — Volkanovski (08:23)
On legacy and fighting for more than money:
“You see people that are just taking damage after damage… I ain’t hanging around, you know what I mean? … Your health is big as well.” — Volkanovski (22:16/22:34)
On his plan for the fight & future:
“I want to go out there and take minimal damage, go out there and really set a statement and show people that I’m still that guy... And then I want a quick, reasonably quick turnaround to fight Laro Murphy or Movza.” — Volkanovski (16:51)
