now let's get this party started you're listening to fox sports radio it's tuesday here on the herd jason mcintyre back in for colin cowherd who's on a vacation and boy is he missing a lot the lakers win again kevin durant is horrific we got the world baseball classic title game tonight and oh my gosh an nfl trade just went down shaking up the afc even more rachel nichols we got a great show today oh my don't you love it when a trade happens like right before the
Rachel Nichols
show this is just a great week on the calendar right i mean the sports calendar everything's happening right now everything is happening and even the nfl not in season chimes in yes with this
Jason McIntyre
deal we got we got mock drafts dropping that i don't like at all but it's not about the the mock draft er it's about the players we'll get to that later in the show but we got to start with the nfl trade they're calling this a blockbuster i don't know that i would go there the broncos and dolphins make a a seismic trade you got jalen waddle going from miami to denver waddle and a fourth in exchange in exchange for a first third and fourth there it is on the screen so the miami dolphins will now have the thirtieth pick in the first round thirtieth overall and a third and a fourth miami pretty clearly signaling what they're doing so a long time ago somebody smart told me jay don't believe people when they say something believe people when they do something somebody comes out and says oh i want to start a business and they're playing video games around the clock right somebody says i want to write a screenplay and they're out boozing it up three nights a week at bars okay believe their actions for the last month and change the miami dolphins have been said we're not tanking no we're not tanking that's not a thing we do we just got rid of tyreek hill and bradley chubb so we could clean up our cap and then the miami dolphins went out and said we're going to go get malik willis see that's not what tanking teams do we've got maybe our franchise quarterback and then now five minutes later here come the dolphins trading one of their three good players guys i'm not even exaggerating the miami dolphins roster is horrible did i say horrible horrific it's terrible it's right down there with the jets and it's very clear the signal is out miami is tanking i know you don't want to hear it takings for the nba no the miami dolphins have a clear vision we need to clear up our cap clean it all out let's get rid of the old players from the old regime and let's target the twenty twenty seven draft they are loading up i saw they have four third round picks or fourth round picks for next year's draft everybody knows next year's draft is the one with quarterbacks okay arch banning would be the big prize everybody would love him my jets would love him they are also in full on tank mode i mean geno smith really seriously and if you don't want to arch manning fine car at notre dame's very good or you can just get the guy who comes out of nowhere and becomes the number one pick like joe burrow who was absolutely not the number one pick after his first year at lsu or cam ward or fernando mendoza none of those guys a year out were considered the number one pick someone always emerges and it's clear the miami dolphins are tanking and looking to the future malik willis i'm sure he has some buyer's remorse on accepting that contract obviously the millions of dollars will be great but it's going to be a rough season ahead for miami now the other side of the coin is the denver broncos and you've got to love this trade if you're a broncos fan they're doing cartwheels in altitude right now i mean sean payton gets a great weapon in jalen waddle who fits in that offense perfectly i know he hasn't been an all pro i don't even think he has a pro bowl on his resume and his numbers have actually declined a bit the last couple years he had a great first two seasons in the league i think thirteen hundred yards in year two and he fits seamlessly alongside cortland sutton who's the big body contested guy waddle you see is great over the middle got the speed they got young pat bryant who looks like a player they drafted him last year third round pick he showed well you maybe move off of marvin mims see what you can get for him i like the tight end in evan ingram denver the arrow is clearly pointing up you've got the quarterback on the rookie deal and the move is fortify the roster broncos fans were a little upset that they didn't do more yet in the off season kind of resigning their guys no big splashes this qualifies as a splash i do wonder listen the trade just broke thirty minutes ago so we don't know the details but is it possible that the broncos looked at the draft analyzed guys from the combine said listen i don't think we can get anybody plug and play that's at the jalen waddle level this is a seasoned pro he comes in listen sean payton's going to unlock some of his best stuff the same way mike mcdaniel did i think this is a great trade for the broncos and i will add folks you look around the afc there's a lot of uncertainty i mean hell the bills and ravens two contenders with superstar quarterbacks they just dumped their coaches what's that reboot going to be like patrick mahomes is coming off a major injury and i know they're saying all the right things oh mahomes yeah he'll be ready for the opener okay well you could say that but again what are your actions they just went and traded for justin fields who i probably would guess starts week one i know the league wouldn't love that they love mahomes back in the saddle but there's uncertainty in kansas city they don't have a secondary i mean they just lost their top two quarterbacks so we're looking at chiefs down ravens down bills i mean the broncos just beat them in the playoffs in a hell of a game but then you even look at the steelers what's their quarterback situation uncertainty that reigns there too jacksonville are they going to duplicate you know double digit wins houston has some major questions at quarterback after cj stroud's terrible playoff game so the afc is kind of sort of wide open and the broncos just watched the new england patriots go from the seller to the penthouse with drake may and adding stefan diggs so i think this is a home run for the denver broncos just an outstanding move sean payton and company in denver have done a phenomenal job pivoting from russell wilson's disaster to quickly number one seed in the afc afc championship game and my guess i haven't seen an update in the odds i think denver probably is your favorite in the afc heading into next season so great trade for the broncos miami dolphins fans as they like to say on social media enjoy the projects it's going to be a rough year for the miami dolphins all right let's pivot to last night's huge game in the nba and yes i'm talking about the lakers i had an option here folks do we start positive with the lakers or do i go after my guy kevin durant for not a great game and some bad troubling signs in houston we're going to elect to go positive with the lakers because jj redick is really unlocking some incredible stuff with this lakers team they're one of the hottest teams in the league okay nine wins in their last ten games six in a row nice comeback in the second half against houston last night and guess who was doing it all lebron james hey lebron i need you to pull back a little bit on offense pick your spots what does lebron do pulls back picks his spots lebron any more defense lebron was great defensively last night lebron more passing lebron's doing it all jj redick has been magnificent he's not going to win coach of the year because there's too many other great candidates joe missoula's up there you got detroit's coach obviously okc san antonio so many good head coaches out there but after the game redick talked about lebron's new role with the lakers listen to this lebron in particular you know it's one of the
Joe Davis
things we talked about last week is
Jason McIntyre
just continue to be the best transition player in the nba and it's such a dynamic force for our offense yeah dynamic is the perfect word so the offense struggled with that luka to start the fourth the fourth quarter was ugly last night i think the lakers went like seven minutes without a field goal rockets could not do anything and this is where reddick comes in and i know people were like ah this guy's a podcaster listen if you listen to any of reddick's podcasts you know a couple things about him number one the sun rises and sets with the numbers he is very analytically based and he watched durant light up the lakers in the first half the midi isos against austin reaves marcus smart durant was killing him in the half court and they were making the right passes so what does redick do late in the game he starts blitzing and doubling kevin durant as he comes over half court and folks i do love kevin durant and we'll go after him here in a minute for what's going on in houston but durant wilted folks i've never seen a superstar top fifteen player in nba history have an eight second violation bringing the ball up the court because he was nervous about the double team and another one like a few possessions later he had an over and back because he stepped on the line kevin durant was so uncertain as you see these highlights it started to melt down when austin reaves in the third quarter got like was up in his jersey and kd just lowered the shoulder and banged him and got a flagrant and there he is stepping i mean durant was totally rattled by everything redick did it was a masterful performance and i know j mack why are you glazing the lakers again come on man stop they're not contenders folks listen i don't know what you want me to do you said the lakers couldn't beat the good teams last four games against good teams they beat the knicks they beat the wolves they beat the nuggets and now they beat the rockets those are all top six teams in their respective conferences and i mean listen the marcus smart move i don't know how many of you guys are watching this game last night lakers pull away in the final like ninety seconds they go up ten marcus smart is diving to steal an inbounds pass there's something about jj redick unlocking the best version of austin reaves of lebron marcus smart i mean hell last night deandre ayton looked so bad in the first quarter you could see the stars looking at the bench being like can we get him out of here just watch the body language lebron and luka when he drops a pass they're like and it's understandable because ayton you know calls himself the dominator you know he thinks he's worth all the money and then he plays awful and they pull him out for long stretches but they were getting killed on the glass in the fourth quarter and redick i watched the postgame he's he's like we were in the huddle and i'm like i trust deandre ayton puts him in gets a couple boards had six offensive rebounds couple late buckets guys i know jj redick he's only a podcaster but my brother and i used to watch this tv show in the eighties i'm dating myself here a little bit called the a team most people remember mister t you know great show i could hum the theme song for you dun dun dun a great great show and hannibal the leader usually at the end of the show they would solve the mystery and win you know defeat the bad guys he would pop a cigar in his mouth and say i love it when a plan comes together and i'm just telling you right now watching these lakers the last couple weeks jj redick's plans they're coming together they're coalescing and the lakers they look like one of the best teams in the league fine they're not the thunder yet fine they're not the spurs you're telling me they're not the third best team in the west because they're beating everybody else that matters all right we have a great show today you can tell i'm fired up nfl trade lakers another win we got world baseball classic tonight the guest lineup is off the hook today rachel's fired up about this trade like we got a lot of stuff going on and saint patrick's day unfortunately
Rachel Nichols
i know we fell down on the
Jason McIntyre
job there this is not i'm not gonna you know blame anybody i got dressed in the dark waking up to get to the morning meeting but rachel any early thoughts on the trade i know we'll hit it again later in
Rachel Nichols
the show but just the diversity it's gonna bring to the broncos offense right and the fact that he just gives them the explosive play capability they didn't really have also if bo nix is really your guy you want to give him as many weapons as possible so i think this is a great move for the broncos i think it's worth investing what they invested i thought it was interesting that they tried to make this deal before the trade deadline and that they said in the end the dolphins price was too high they wanted a first round pick plus well the dolphins got a first round pick plus so i'm not sure what changed over that time it might have been the third fourth round swap and all those or whatever but clearly they saw i think i think they saw how far they got in the playoffs this past year and they were like okay we're ready to go for it now yeah
Jason McIntyre
so we agree broncos good dolphins less so all right coming up next here on the herd kevin durant melted down last night had one basket in the second half he's getting hammered online and we haven't even got to the burner accounts and how players are playing on his team since that emerged at the all star break that's next here on the herd be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon eastern nine am pacific on fox sports radio fs one and the iheartradio app hey this is jason mcintyre join me every weekday morning on my podcast straight fire with jason mcintyre this isn't your typical sports pod pushing the same tired narratives down your throat every day straight fire gives you honest opinions on all the biggest sports headlines accurate stats to help you win big at the sportsbook and all the best guests do yourself a favor and listen to straight fire with jason mcentire on the iheartradio app apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts

all right two truths and a lie here we go i went to college with college football coach jim mcelwain i began my broadcasting career doing play by play for the las vegas stars and i've been a verizon customer for fifteen years okay i lied all three are true verizon isn't as expensive as you think in fact if you bring in your at and t or t mobile bill to a verizon store they'll give you a better deal that's right a better deal on the best network with the most ways to save on plans streaming and phone deals so take that at and t or t mobile bill to your local verizon store today get a better deal and start saving based on root metrics best overall mobile network performance us second half twenty twenty five all rights reserve must provide recent consumer mobile bill in the name of the person redeeming the deal additional terms conditions and restrictions apply support for the show comes from public so it kind of feels like there's two types of investing platforms you got the old school brokerages that look like they were designed in like nineteen ninety five then you have those other platforms the ones that feel less like investing and more like a casino public is neither it's the investing platform for people who actually take this stuff seriously you know people who are serious about building their wealth because on public you can build a portfolio of stocks and options and bonds and crypto without all the bugs or the confetti retirement accounts yep high yield cash of course they even have direct indexing honestly this is what investing platform should look like modern design simple to use and customer support that actually cares go to public dot com cowherd and earn an uncapped one percent bonus when you transfer your portfolio that's public dot com calhurt

Rachel Nichols
about those how many teams in your
Jason McIntyre
league there's six teams in the league
Rachel Nichols
congratulations on making it through that thick dense forest of teams to the final
Jason McIntyre
you get the number one seed you know you win the semifinal oh my lord you know who's not going to a final kevin durant he's not getting anywhere near a finals and listen i will say i have a checkered history with kd obviously i loved the move to golden state back in the day defended it i was taking arrows from all sides it made sense he was a two time finals mvp it was not a weak move to leave the thunder playing with russell westbrook the other stuff that's going on now in houston i can't defend it now i know let me preface this by saying fred van vliet's injury in the off season was a killer it was huge he's your point guard he's a veteran leader he can run the show he could get him in offense you know who can't do that stuff kevin durant reed shepherd amen thompson none of them could do that so part of this issue with houston is on the front office they did not find a replacement for van vliet or even you know could they have gotten chris paul i don't know maybe nobody wants to play with chris paul because he's chris paul it's just interesting watching durant last night folks he was great in the first half in the second half he had one basket and six six turnovers and a flagrant foul now yesterday i walked into the building and i was like i need some stats on shen and jabari smith the guys that kd took shots at from his burner accounts when those got exposed all star break how are they doing in the second half jabari smith's actually shooting it well shenun is having a rough time he didn't play last night injured and i guess the key word here i'm looking at is leadership you're in a fourth quarter close game late in the season this game was big last night for both teams and wednesday's rematch i would assume kd will bounce back with a thirty five piece or something but i saw zero leadership from kevin durant last night now he did go to the podium afterward and listen guys are going after him and you know he looked a little confused about running the offense remember this is a guy who always had a good point guard alongside him whether it was russell westbrook steph curry kyrie irving he he he thrives when he doesn't have to do much let me just show up make some jumpers play some defense that's my style i don't want to be a leader in the locker room he's made that clear and that's fine i think that kind of sort of puts a ceiling on what you can be all time but here's kd at least taking some accountability after the loss i lost the game force tonight that simple i mean my teammates could
Joe Davis
i mean of course we probably could
Jason McIntyre
make more three but it's all on it's all unique i mean to be
Joe Davis
honest i'm the offense and the opposing
Jason McIntyre
team is going use all their resources
Joe Davis
now let me get comfortable it's just
Jason McIntyre
so weird we are going to look back at kevin durant's career as just one of the wildest i can remember remember most of these all time greats stay where they start larry bird magic johnson you know kobe bryant most those guys all stayed where they were michael jordan obviously ended with the wizards but like we don't really count that of course because if jordan didn't win the championship it didn't happen right that's that's what the jordan stands like to say when he was you know with the wizards at the tail end and in this era it's the player empowerment era everybody has their thing right curry with the threes lebron player empowerment everywhere lebron goes he wins championships what's kevin's durant's thing i would be the best one on one player in like an all time bracket in nba history okay what's that worth this is not a one on one sport this is a team sport you want to be a one on one star go go play badminton or tennis you know or bowling this basketball is a team sport and i've seen zero leadership out of kd it's disappointing because he is an all time great when he gets cooking there's few players i like to watch more than kevin durant but he looks so confused last night here he is talking about the double teams and the turnovers we're talking about like a thirty seven year old veteran here this is not some young guy cooper flag being rattled by defenses listen to what he said you just got to convert maybe i got to just get out the way get
Joe Davis
in the corner space the floor out
Jason McIntyre
for other guys i think just that when i get the ball against certain
Joe Davis
teams they just going to sell out
Jason McIntyre
and start to figure out i think i just need to get out the way and let other guys dribble the ball now somebody smart on our team was like well j mack is this is he referencing he sounds like he might be talking about lebron james because lebron hasn't come out and said this but him and reddick clearly had some kind of meeting where lebron i need you off the ball i need you to play defense i'm not asking you to spot up in the corner but we we don't want you on the ball as much and is that is that what kd's alluded to i don't know i mean it's possible but for kd to not have any answers i know jay hey that's the coach's job guys he's an all time great and by the way udoka is a good coach i mean he just got put in a body bag by jj redick last night reddick totally coach circles around him but for kd to look that confused what are we sixty eight seventy games into the season that that's troubling let's go to rachel nichols with the
Joe Davis
news no no no turn on the
Jason McIntyre
news this is the herd line news
Rachel Nichols
kd not making your rec league team apparently let's talk about steve kerr had his six hundredth win last night as the warriors beat the wizards kerr is the fourth fastest j mac to get as a coach to behind phil jackson pat riley and gregg popovich pretty good list kerr said after the game quote you can't win in this league without great players and i was blessed from the day i took this job with incredible talent which is true and definitely a very steve kerr thing to say he's incredibly humble and just you know a good guy and quick to share credit but also managing that talent is a skill that all of these coaches have had if you ask me where where do you put occur in the all time rankings oh that's a good
Jason McIntyre
question so he i mean what are we playing titles here because i think pop riley phil off the top of my head are they equal do they
Rachel Nichols
all have more auerbach has like you've got auerbach phil and also are you talking as a coach or coach and a player because what's good about phil and what's interesting about a guy like phil jackson or steve kerr or pat riley guys who played right it's sort of like oh okay i mean obviously phil fell on the knicks we all remember that lone that lone ring jason you're still celebrating but you know people forget they're like oh he was on those jordan teams he got three rings with jordan he also got two with the spurs right oh that's right yeah he was on the david robinson teams
Jason McIntyre
oh here we go most combined he has nine i mean at some point you got to just say listen hindson case sam jones what was that like
Rachel Nichols
the sixties well okay so i mean that's my thing people people are always quick to say auerbach in any of these conversations and he obviously was just a huge personality in the nba at the time but to me it's kind of again i'm not trying to insult you it's kind of like your rec league there's a couple of teams in that there were literally eight teams in the nba for most of red ayerbrook's coaching career and then like at the very end there were nine i mean i just it makes it a little bit harder for me totally agree to count those titles in the same way i'm sorry to boston fans on saint
Jason McIntyre
patrick's day no it's fine is he in the discussion with phil jackson steve
Rachel Nichols
kerr yeah i think so i mean one of the things that i think really i said managing that talent i think that is underrated when people are like oh he had lebron oh he had shaq and kobe oh he had steph curry or whatever that's not easy you think steve kerr navigating the steph curry kevin durant draymond green situation you think phil jackson navigating shaq and kobe i mean you know i i just think that and steve has had to navigate his own things i mean steve set the culture for that team ob steph curry is steph curry nothing would happen without him but that playing with joy that sort of you know numbers you know we all have to do is all about the numbers you know it takes you know twelve of us whatever is steve that's a good discussion
Jason McIntyre
so i don't want to go my inclination most people would say well it's phil jackson i mean he coached jordan kobe and shaq what has phil done more with less because steve kerr i mean when he inherited the warriors they hadn't won anything right and steph curry was not thought of as anywhere close
Rachel Nichols
to well that's the thing i mean they upgraded quote unquote to steve kerr because mark jackson by the way got them from bad to the middle and they were like oh the middle isn't good enough with this talent so obviously steve came in and did something and you know steph obviously progressing himself but i think the way coaches manage talent is just as important as sort of how many wins do they have those egos gregg popovich is a great coach not just because he's won a lot of games and rings it's because of the culture he's set up in san antonio you had victor wembanyama before the draft lottery his year being like i really just hope i go to the spurs i mean that's crazy for a kid in france to say that but he was like i just want to be coached by gregg popovich i mean
Jason McIntyre
did maybe tony parker that that no
Rachel Nichols
of course i mean he was watching he was watching those teams more i
Jason McIntyre
guess lastly i will phil jackson so jordan didn't win anything without phil jackson he couldn't win with doug collins right couldn't get out of like the second round of the playoffs yeah so when phil shows up he wins so i got to give phil credit for that it's a tough that's a good discussion i don't know there's no right answer obviously it's subjective but yeah no so
Rachel Nichols
i don't know all right from six hundred wins to fifty victor wembanyama and the spurs they got their fiftieth win of the season jason last night beating the clippers after the game though wemby said fifty wins isn't enough take a
Joe Davis
listen first fifty wins season since sixteen
Jason McIntyre
seventy once it made me fast i
Joe Davis
didn't mean wins means growth
Jason McIntyre
but still not enough i want to get to
Joe Davis
at least sixty to balance out my
Jason McIntyre
rookie season
Rachel Nichols
i mean i you know i love this guy i think you have a crush right no i do
Jason McIntyre
not i mean he's awesome what's he's
Rachel Nichols
very likable that would be yeah inappropriate as we say but look it's not just that to me it's not just the like crazy physical gifts it's not just the talent his work ethic is actually is excellent but it's stuff like this like how refreshing is it to hear a player talk about goals for the regular season talk about oh we gotta get sixty wins oh we gotta have a competitive all star game i mean that kind of stuff i think is part of what impresses me so
Jason McIntyre
much about him too and like the end of the game i'm sure you saw the highlight where he was scrambling around the court defending everyone sixty wins so i'm guessing in their rookie year they lost sixty is that were they
Rachel Nichols
like twenty two in the yeah i mean they were they were bad i mean i thought it was interesting too the reporter brought it up you know they we think about the spurs as this organization that's handed off from david robinson to tim duncan to kwai to wemby it's been almost ten years since they reached this benchmark and the season isn't even over yet i'm still taking
Jason McIntyre
them over the thunder now the problem is right now it would be spurs lakers second round don't really like them
Rachel Nichols
for the that's a problem for who
Jason McIntyre
that's great for the league obviously that's a problem for luka and lebron i don't like their chances in that one
Rachel Nichols
yeah well i mean it could help them clear up some issues this summer
Jason McIntyre
though perhaps talking about lebron james yeah
Rachel Nichols
i'm just saying that you know i think how the lakers do in the playoffs might influence how much the lakers want to keep lebron and we can get into this throughout the show but but you know and also how much lebron wants to stay and also hey if wemby and the spurs show that the lakers defensive issues with those three guys in the court are more glaring than they've looked in the past couple weeks then maybe that influences things too but but regardless what's interesting to me about wemby and guys like lebron is that you've had so many big huge players say i'm glad i'm glad he's not there i'm not coming into the league with him lebron actually said wemby is what's going to make me retire like i mean that's incredible yeah right jokic said something very similar like you have lebron and nikola jokic being like oh i'm glad i'm not on the same timeline as this guy he's a monster like it's pretty incredible all right let's talk a little world baseball classic team italy their run is over jason but i mean the electric we had someone yesterday right telling us they're the cinderella sweet sixteen number sixteen seed story of the wbc they fell to venezuela last night four two but after the game vinnie pasquintino said he's so grateful to be accepted with open arms by the italian players you know he's an american player obviously and he said he'd been to italy once before this tournament but vinnie pasquintino you know this guy is definitely an italian to just be able to have a guy like that talk about growing the game in italy and chances for players like this baseball fans of course know this guy he's fun he's a great quote he's a good fantasy player but the general sports fan is probably not familiar with the you know royals roster and i think the general sports fan got a taste of him in this series and i mean he's just he's so fun i
Jason McIntyre
think you predicted this last i did yeah yeah i did i had you had italy the wife is italian so you gotta rock with the team but i get it so venezuela us tonight on fox and rachel with the news yeah well that's the news and thanks for stopping by the herd lie news so coming up next to get us into that joe davis stops by venezuela usa some interesting pitching chatter regarding usa should be a good one that's next year on the herd be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon eastern nine am pacific craving bold authentic taste without kitchen chaos true

world baseball classic tonight the final game as team usa looks to take home the championship against ronald acuna junior and venezuela coverage begins at seven pm eastern four pacific on five oh yeah it's
Jason McIntyre
a big one and you know we bring out the big guns let's bring in joe davis the voice of baseball here on fox sports he called venezuela italy last night a thriller joe great to have you on the show before we get to the usa game talk about last night it sounds like watching it on tv that the vibes were just off the charts the stadium was
Joe Davis
going crazy yeah yeah i mean it was because they didn't do much because venezuela didn't do much for the first six innings of the game it was tense and there would be moments where they would come to life but then that little rally that little two out rally where they had four straight singles it was as loud as any stadium
Jason McIntyre
i've ever been in wow unbelievable so what's your guess tonight obviously usa venezuela the crowd will be slightly more venezuela but are we thinking like sixty forty maybe bigger i think it's at least
Joe Davis
seventy thirty venezuela really i don't know if it'll break down that way like if you were to actually count i don't know if it would be seventy thirty but it's probably going to feel even beyond that just the the amount of passion and noise that the venezuelan fans bring i think it's going to feel like eighty five fifteen oh my
Jason McIntyre
god yeah that's that's a little wild all right so nolan mcclain is the starter tonight got roughed up against italy i'm sure there's some casual baseball fans out there saying wait a sec team usa championship game world baseball classic we're starting nolan mcclain i guess what are your thoughts on that yeah this is
Joe Davis
the best pitching staff team usa has ever had but still you're dealing with the issue that every team in the world baseball classic deals with and that is you have two sets that you're trying to please you got your nation's team you're trying to win a championship for but then you have your big league employer and they have their own wishes as they should right they want you to be getting ready for the regular season building up appropriately so you're not going to have the top three starting pitchers the top five starting pitchers or whatever it is from each country you're going to have the top three to five guys that you can get so look they had the last two cy young winners they had scubal make one start yet skeens make two logan webb's a two time all star so it's the best pitching staff they've ever had but it's still in a situation where yeah while he's talented he's only made eight major league starts this is the best option that they're left with
Jason McIntyre
for the championship and then there's further concern about the pitching staff and depth with miller and bedner and their availability what's the latest on those guys i
Joe Davis
don't know if we're going to know officially until we get to the game because there are literally conversations going on right up until game time with the parent clubs can we use the guy tonight you know and and you it's hard to get mad at the teams for saying no i mean like yeah you can get emotional about it be like come on let him pitch for team usa but how could say aj preller or the padres live with himself if mason miller went out there and got hurt god forbid tonight you know like i hope he pitches and of course hope that he's healthy and closes the thing down and as spectacular as he has been but you can understand why these big league clubs have their concerns and that's just it's competing interests
Jason McIntyre
yeah ultimately do you think teams are more like hey team usa rah rah everybody's excited or are they like hey you know that that's great and all but we need him shut down we can't have him go tonight i think
Joe Davis
more and more there's buy in they're seeing what this tournament has turned into i think that you just look at the difference in pitching staff this year compared to the twenty twenty three team for team usa twenty twenty three team didn't have a single guy that had gotten a cy young vote the year before and again this year's team had both cy young winners last year a two time all star on webb a loaded bullpen so yeah i think that there is much more of an appreciation for this is about the greater good of the game but still it's not it's not completely reins off yet so
Jason McIntyre
it'll have a game seven world series feel tonight hopefully not eighty five fifteen venezuela noise wise but i guess is there do you have an edge to either team here is there something you've seen in the world baseball classic that gives one side the edge venezuela's bullpen
Joe Davis
has been awesome so you look and you see that eduardo rodriguez is starting and he's not been very good the bullpen's been awesome six plus innings scoreless against japan for venezuela seven and two thirds scoreless last night what do they have left for tonight and they're dealing with those same conversations that mark derosa is with the parent clubs for his pitchers who can they use back to back days who can they use what it now be if they were to use a guy three times in four days that's going to be up to the parent clubs if they let them so venezuela's got a serious advantage if all those guys are available in the bullpen you look at the lineups yeah team usa is stacked it's a who's who it's a murderer's row but venezuela's got six all stars they got a former mvp in acuna you got a home run champion and probably a future hall of famer in salvador perez who's coming off of the bench so there's just as much talent in that venezuel
Jason McIntyre
lineup too yeah you mentioned the difference between the pitching staff from twenty three to twenty six for usa what about the bats would you say significant upgrade or i mean this is one of the better lineups we've ever seen yeah
Joe Davis
i don't know how to call it significant upgrade i think just the the most obvious thing is that aaron judge is in there and he's as we know he can transform it he's been really good in this tournament i think you could say judge has kind of been what usa has been in this tournament he's not been bad but he's not maybe been as extraordinary as you had hoped and i think you can say the same thing about the team usa lineup part of that is judges and getting much to hit collectively for the lineup i think everybody's still sitting there waiting when is it going to explode michael young one of the coaches said it's like a volcano and they all feel it like it's going to erupt at some point you figure but this tournament is so short is it going to erupt in time to keep up with a good venezuela offense tonight
Jason McIntyre
which kind of makes the mvp discussion a little difficult because would you say there's a clear leader at this point or is it simply hey whoever plays best tonight probably takes it i think
Joe Davis
you may end up with that who is the hero of game seven may become the mvp if you had to talk about it right now if it was for team usa roman anthony two home runs he's ripping in nine he had to go ahead home run the other night gunner henderson leads the team at average but he's only started a couple games so it feels odd to make him the mvp i mean you could talk about skeens and his two starts as spectacular as he's been but i think it does come down to tonight who has the big swing to win what is going to feel like a game seven and has all the dimensions of a game seven where it all comes down to this joe you
Jason McIntyre
also called dodgers games since twenty sixteen ohtani said he was kind of disappointed in the in the result he didn't pitch any vibes on ohtani coming into this season for the dodgers coming off what i guess they would call a disappointing world baseball classic yeah anytime japan
Joe Davis
bows out that early which is the earliest they've ever left it's going to be a huge disappointment as far as ohtani talking to people around the dodgers like well how in the world can the guy do any better you know he has fifty fifty season his first year he resumes pitching last year he's won a world series both years with the team the feeling i'm getting is that people think that the way he's wired he's always going to find something even if there's nothing obvious and and i think that the most obvious thing for him to find would be a way to win a cy young that's the one thing that he does and that's that one little opening on the trophy shelf that he hasn't filled yet so he when he a couple years ago wasn't pitching he said i'm going to turn into a stolen base threat and stole fifty eight this year fully removed from tommy john surgery full buildup it's hard to like it's hard to ever doubt his ability to do anything and that's the one thing that he
Jason McIntyre
hasn't done so you're almost making me want to go bet ohtani to win the cy young but i'm curious so did he not pitch with japan because the dodgers said hey don't pitch or was it his choice or mutual conversation
Joe Davis
where they just think that the best buildup for him is one that's a little more measured a little more controlled than putting him out there in the middle of these intense tournament games yeah
Jason McIntyre
all right joe davis voice of the dodgers calling the world baseball classic the big one tonight everybody's excited usa venezuela joe thanks a lot enjoy the game can't wait to watch it on fox
Joe Davis
okay jason thanks for having me bud
Jason McIntyre
all right joe davis boy the excitement tonight listen i know rachel's fired up we got march madness world baseball classic nba winding out nfl trade i've been
Rachel Nichols
so loving this world baseball classic i've been on the edge of my seat when he says it's a game seven that is one hundred percent what it feels like the last game for team usa was like tension with every second i've loved it this is a great
Jason McIntyre
tournament his volcano analogy i feel like it applies to like a bryce harper yeah aaron judge are they playing tight yep you know it i think they're going to be fine tonight i i obviously taking the usa to win yeah
Rachel Nichols
no of course because of all the reasons but i mean look judge what i like about what aaron's done and he said he he's not gotten a lot pitched to him that can kind of create some of these explosive moments he had one that looked like a home run and then you know guy climbed the wall to to get it yeah that he made in the last game in the semifinal to third i think they said it was like ninety something miles an hour like that was a huge play huge and you could see it affect the dominican players the rest of the night they weren't trying to steal bases in the same way someone like clocked it what the change was and so what i like is that he's able to affect i mean look at that he's able to affect the game and because he got the out there the entire rest of the night guys were not taking his big leads guys weren't trying to steal bases so even when they probably should have so i do like that aaron judge has made an impact because that's what
Jason McIntyre
he does and how about it's great even non yankee fans yeah by the way how do you divide the yankees dodgers i feel like you've told me
Rachel Nichols
that before i'm not i didn't grow up in new york your kids oh my kids yeah yeah yeah yeah my kids have gone you know my husband grew up in new york native new yorker yankee fan and i you know have really i didn't i didn't feel a big attachment because the nationals weren't there when i was a kid and that's really the city i lived you know even though i grew up in maryland you know they were terrible cal ripken was was a big deal but like going first of all memorial stadium back in the day this was pre camden yards was crap total dumb and and also it was far away i mean people think maryland everyone lives near baltimore i live nowhere near baltimore i lived like you know a couple blocks from from the dc border so for me like it was all dc teams and we didn't have much so when i moved here to la it was the first time i felt like oh man this could be my team so
Jason McIntyre
what's your nfl team's washington commanders washington
Rachel Nichols
commanders and then you know wizards capitals or as i like to still call them the bullets the bullets yes because that is the team i grew up liking but then yeah dodgers for sure
Jason McIntyre
for baseball i mean i unfortunately have stuck with a lot of bad new york teams knicks have won nothing in
Rachel Nichols
my life i think that's because of
Jason McIntyre
you actually probably probably jets have definitely won nothing in my lifetime how did
Rachel Nichols
that happen by the way i just
Jason McIntyre
picked the jets because i'm one of these like counterintuitive move to dc and everybody every kid's like washington redskins at the time i was like i don't want to root for them i'm rooting for the jets i was born in new york giants were good i like to pick a loser and ride them to the top but we haven't got there yet not yet to the top maybe arch manning will get us there all right coming up next unbelievable quotes coming out out about the lakers being better without lebron it is a little crazy we'll talk about that next this
Rachel Nichols

- [16:05] Rachel Nichols, on Denver’s trade:
“If Bo Nix is really your guy, you want to give him as many weapons as possible, so I think this is a great move for the Broncos... I thought it was interesting they tried to make this deal before the trade deadline and the Dolphins’ price was too high. Well, the Dolphins got a first round pick plus…”
- [21:51] Jason McIntyre, on KD:
“He’s not getting anywhere near a Finals—and listen, I will say, I have a checkered history with KD… It’s just interesting watching Durant last night… one basket and six turnovers and a flagrant foul.”
- [24:29] Kevin Durant, postgame:
“I lost the game for us tonight, that simple….I’m the offense and the opposing team is going to use all their resources…”
