Welcome to the Herd. It's me, Jason McIntyre, in for Colin Cowherd. He is enjoying the last days of summer before football begins. It is a beautiful Monday and I'm joined by Rachel Nichols. Everybody knows and loves Rachel Nichols, longtime veteran, journalist, host, analyst. I mean, she's done everything. Rachel, how was your weekend?
Rachel Nichols
You know, I was in Orlando for the Big three championship game working with cbs. So it was was kind of crazy to see how much that league has grown. Yeah, right when it started it was sort of like a random off thing to do in the summer. And like it's legit, man. They had a full packed arena and you know names, you know, like Michael Beasley, Lance Stevenson, Mario Chalmers winning the title.
Jason McIntyre
So you know that Orlando, very sunny in August. A little heat there, huh?
Rachel Nichols
It's, it wasn't my favorite location to be in in August, but you know, you go where the basketball is.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. Speaking of heat, my week off, I popped over to Vegas, made some bets for the season, the upcoming football season, and I saw Dave Matthews in concert. Excellent show as always. We have an excellent show ahead. We'll do some gambling, a lot of NFL as the week. We are now 10 days away from the beginning of the NFL season. Oh boy, I am very excited. However, before I left for vacation, there were a couple big NFL stories. Caleb Williams, is he going to mesh with Ben Johnson? I return and it's still a problem. The Dallas Cowboys, Micah Parsons, what's going on with him and Jerry, it's still a problem. But bigger than both of those, perhaps combined, is the Shedeur Sanders developing situation in Cleveland. Folks, there's no way around this. He is the most hyped 5th round draft pick in the history of football. And Shedeur took the field in the second half for the Browns. And as you can see here on FS1, it was a bit of a poop show in the final preseason game for Shedeur Sanders. He was an unmitigated disaster in the second half. He was 3 for 6 for 14 yards. And it gets worse. He was sacked, as you can see, running for his life five times for -41 yards. So if you're keeping track at home, Rachel and I had more net passing yards than Shadour Sanders did on Saturday night. Folks, this was bad. But a funny thing happened as the critiques unfolded Sunday morning. And listen, I'm telling you right now, every single podcast, TV show, radio show, anybody writing about the NFL today is leading with Shador Sanders because it's, it's just so wacky what's going on in Cleveland. So you guys know in Hollywood, out here in L. A, there's a thing called a Nepo baby, right? Your mom or dad were famous, so they were in music or entertainment. And they get handed something, whether it's an album, a TV role, directing, and usually they're panned. Oh, come on, Nepo baby. They were handed it. They've got to prove it before they get the accolades. The opposite seems to be happening with Shador Sanders, his legion of fans. He's now a celebrity quarterback. They're just expecting him to make the roster. I don't know that it's a 100% lock. I think he's going to make it. We'll know by Tuesday at 4:00'. Clock. But everybody's just expecting him to be given everything. And folks, that's just not how it works in the NFL. And if you listen to Shador talk, I mean, after this performance against the Rams, it was, it was bad. And there's some more bad news coming after it. But here's Shador talking about, oh my gosh, how upset he was that he was pulled before getting a chance to redeem himself in the two minute drill.
Shedeur Sanders
If I could go back and do anything, I mean, it's always everything in life, if you had that chance. But we don't have the luxury to travel back in time as a kid. I want to go back and do things differently. So overall, of course, you know, you wish you can, but in the battle of the moment, in the heat of the battle, you know, you want to be that alpha, you want to be that dog, you want to be out there in that final two minute drive. So, you know, of course, of course small things, of course frustrate, but that's what happens, you know, when you want a player to be able to change the fr.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. Smiling on the outside, maybe crying on the inside. Listen, it was very clear he was not happy to be pulled by Stefanski. So they put in Snoop Huntley, veteran quarterback, 27 years old, second tour of duty with the Browns. He leads him right down the field for the game winning field goal. Okay. And all these fans of Shador. I'm trying to understand why they love him so much. And he, like, he's a guy, I get it. His dad is Deion Sanders and he's kind of swagged out, but he was terrible. Can we be real? Pro Football Focus had a number that was staggering. Shedeurs average time to throw was 5.13 seconds Saturday night. That's an eternity for a quarterback. And he was still sacked five times in playing backyard football and running around, so yet this weird thing happens. Well, wait a minute, hold on. Did you see that? The Browns cut four of the five linemen who were blocking for Shador. They cut them on, on, on Sunday, so they weren't giving Shador a fair chance. Hello, guys. Two of those linemen who were cut were also playing for Dylan Gabriel in the first half. And Dylan Gabriel absolutely cooked. Move the team up and down the field, nine for 11, had a touchdown. And oh, by the way, two of those linemen were also blocking for Stoop Huntley on that final two minute drive. And side note, Dylan Gabriel was not sacked. Snoop Huntley was not sacked. So Kevin Stefanski naturally is getting asked, yo, were you trying to sabotage your quarterback? Which is mind blowing nonsense. Here's Stefanski.
Rachel Nichols
Can you address this sort of persistent narrative that, that you're trying to sabotage Shador Sanders, especially after, you know, after.
Jason McIntyre
Yesterday and not putting him in for the two minute.
Matt Mosley
Yeah, obviously I don't, I don't concern myself with outside type of things, but, you know, I'm committed to his development, just like all of our rookies. So we'll continue to focus on getting our guys better, and that's what we'll stay committed to. And that's what's important to me.
Jason McIntyre
Things are not good for Stefanski. Remember, this is a guy who had to deal with the Baker Mayfield nonsense. Baker Mayfield, of course, was trying to play through an injury, to grit it out, disaster. Then he had desean Watson.
Matt Mosley
Awful.
Jason McIntyre
Let's not just speak of it, folks. This is reminiscent of Bronny James from two summers ago. Okay? Remember, it was like, who's the first pick in the Bronnie draft? I don't know. Bronnie went to the Lakers. It's all anybody cares about. Did you know Cam Ward got in a preseason fight? Good luck fighting that online, you know, how's Travis Hunter doing? Trying to be a generational two way process. Oh, well, we don't know. It's all about the fifth rounder, Shador. Folks, I have a solution. I'm one of these guys. I like to be solution oriented. You know, apparently you know, when the wife is upset with something, you're supposed to really listen and take it in. And. And I'm instantly like, let's just fast forward to the solution. I cannot deal with this negativity. So I want to deal with the solution for Shador. And I got shouted down in the morning meeting when I said, I got it. Guys, did you see the Raiders? They lost Aiden o' Connell out six to eight weeks fractured. And if I'm the Browns, get Shador out of here, please. I can't deal with this anymore. Let's just. Let's just ship him to the Raiders. Jay, nobody's trading for Shador. Well, wait a sec, wait a sec. Pete Carroll did meet with Shedeur at the combine. Shedeur loves Vegas. Go look at his Instagram from January, February. Big fan of Vegas. Called Vegas legendary. It's not really legendary anymore, but I understand. Why wouldn't the Raiders say, hey, let's bring him in to be the backup. He can learn from Geno Smith, who, by the way, struggled big time when he was with the jets right out of college. Go ask Mark Sanchez about that. Sorry, Mark. Listen, I think shed your can learn a lot. Nobody's going to ask for him to start in Vegas. Why don't you ship him out of town? Hey, man, we'll take what we can get. Let's cut our losses. We don't need these headaches. And guess who else is following him out the door. The entire media. Nobody will care about Cleveland anymore. Browns, you got to fix this. Now. From one problem to another, let's go to Dallas and Jerry Jones versus Micah Parsons. I think this is like round nine, I think. Is that where we are, folks? I'm sure you saw the video from the weekend the Dallas Cowboys played a preseason game. Micah Parsons, the only Cowboy on the sideline not in a Jersey. Micah Parsons also laying down on a table while the football was being played. And of course, the media is freaking out. Who cares what happened on the field? Because it's Micah Parsons Now. Micah's got a bad back, but Brian Schottenheimer spoke to the media and was like, hey, it came back pretty clean. You can see where this is headed. It's about to get ugly in Dallas. You know, I already think the Cowboys are going to be a bit of a dumpster fire. But let's hear Jerry Jones talking about the situation with his star defender, Micah Parsons. We wanted to send the details to the agent.
Matt Mosley
The agents told us to stick it up.
Jason McIntyre
We had our agreements on term amount guarantees. Everything.
Matt Mosley
We were going to send it over.
Jason McIntyre
To the agent, and the agent said.
Matt Mosley
Don'T bother because we've got all that to negotiate.
Jason McIntyre
Well, I'd already negotiated. I'd already moved off my mark on several areas.
Matt Mosley
It's the Mama Daddy deal.
Jason McIntyre
You go into mama and she won't do it.
Matt Mosley
And she's the boss, so she won't do it.
Jason McIntyre
So you run into daddy, Daddy says do it. And then you go back in, say, mama, Daddy said it was all right. You lost me there, Jerry. Sounds like a Thanksgiving dinner story from your grandpa. Listen, I don't want to be too harsh here on Jerry Jones. He's a power player in the NFL. I get it. But I am a thousand percent siding with Micah Parsons here. A thousand? It's not even close. I got to pick up for the little man in this discussion with a billionaire. Jerry, this isn't your first rodeo. You know that's not how negotiations work. You can't just do have a side deal with the player and then it goes to the agent. You're like, ah, not going to happen. That's just not how it works. Now, Jerry's been down this road before. Deal with Dak was a disaster. Strung it out to the last moment. Deal with CD Lamb did not go well. That was ugly. But Jerry gets it on some level. We are now in an attention economy, right? That's what it's all about. Are you talking about Dallas? Yes. Is Jerry going on Michael Irvin's podcast? I didn't even know Mike had a podcast. Maybe that's new. Congratulations, Mike. And Jerry's making the rounds and he's just talk about us. We're Dallas. Please keep us in the news. And then as many people suspect a deal will get done at the last moment. Chris Jones, you guys remember with the Chiefs a couple years ago, he. Or maybe it was last year, whenever they played the Lions in week one, he missed the game and it was like, okay, we got to get the Chris Jones deal done. But what's different is Chris Jones had made a lot of money. Micah's still on his rookie deal, and Jerry said something last week about how, hey, we've got him under contract for three more years. That sounds like he's pretty dug in. If you're a Dallas fan and you love Micah Parsons, I'm going to go ahead and guess he's the best selling Jersey on the Cowboys. If it's not number one, it's two or three. It's right there at the top. You're starting to alienate your fan base a little over what a contract? Really? You were going to make him the highest paid, and now you're not because the agent's getting involved. Like, I'm just hopeful, folks, that this is the last, last we're going to hear of this and Dallas, both sides come to the table and get a deal done. However, if you want to go back to this Emmett Smith situation, which is slightly different because he was a free agent, but he was at the height of his powers. The Cowboys were a juggernaut in the mid-90s, and Emmett, remember, sat out the first two games of the season waiting for a deal, ended up getting it after they went 02. What happens if the Cowboys get smashed in week one with no Micah Parsons? Does Jerry capitulate or does he say, we've got him for three more years? Well, Micah, you know, he could bring in an independent doctor and say, oh, my back. I can't go. Hey, can't play. And this gets really ugly. Now, it could already be a lost season for Dallas, but can't we all just get along? I mean, I'm hopeful. I'm really hopeful. The Cowboys, we need stars like Michael Parsons in this league. So, Rachel, I don't know. We'll see. I'm really rooting for Micah to get it done, but this. This negotiation looks kind of ugly.
Rachel Nichols
It feels different than some of the other ones you mentioned. Right there. Feels like there's more bad blood here. And the Cowboys have an advantage. They've got two years of franchising they can do after this year, which is the last year on his contract. So Jerry has said we got three years to work this out. So Micah's not in the power position here. And if he just continues to sit out and sit out, it'll cost him money if he can't get a medical excuse. And even if he can, this is years off his prime years of his career. It's a big deal.
Jason McIntyre
And he didn't make that much in nil because it was a Covid years and stuff. I'm rooting for you, Micah, but it's an uphill climb. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd, weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the iHeartRadio app.

I heard Matt Mosley who covers the Cowboys coming up in about 20 minutes. Can't wait to ask him about Micah versus Jerry. Gosh, you know I don't love talking about this next topic, but it is utterly fascinating. You cannot look away from it. Bill Belichick over the weekend announced North Carolina is indeed going to have A Hulu docu series covering the team. They will follow them around. There's cameras everywhere. As Bill Belichick returns to football coaching, this time in college for North Carolina. Can he bring him to the playoff? It's a fun storyline. Now if you remember a few months ago, North Carolina was talking to HBO about Hard Knocks and that almost happened. It's like, oh, Belichick was once. I go into a TV show. Oh, and it fell through. And then wait, he's really hard up for a TV show. Remember, this is the same Bill Belichick who famously hated the media. Did not like the cameras except for a spygate. Haha. Just kidding. Not really. And would like show up to the podium with like holes in his sweatshirt and joke about face mash and snap face or whatever his jokes were. He hates the media, he doesn't like the cameras. And now he's hard up to get a docu series on Hulu.
Matt Mosley
Huh.
Jason McIntyre
What is a foot? Something doesn't seem right here. And my initial take was that his girlfriend is driving this, this boat and wants to be famous because you know, in the modern era you go on these reality shows, love is blind, whatever food show it is, and, and these people become famous. But somebody said something smart in the morning meeting about what if Belichick is trying to kind of have a rebrand? Okay, well it's easy to rebrand. Hey, I might be 73, but look at the 24 year old girlfriend.
Commercial Voice
Now.
Jason McIntyre
Jordan Hudson herself is fascinating because why would Belichick want to rebrand? Not a lot of 73 year olds are looking to rebrand themselves. It could be because Tom Brady rebranded himself in Tampa. Same guy basically, but won a Super bowl and then he kind of won the divorce or whatever you want to say. But would a 73 year old want to rebrand himself or would his 24 year old girlfriend want to rebrand him? Now she is. Again, I don't love talking about this because it's one of those tough topics where, you know, once your kids get to middle school and high school, you start meeting parents and I would say, you know, 25% of them are on their second marriage. And then you meet the wife and she's like 20 years younger. So on some level I can understand Belichick dating a younger woman. This is significant. Looks like a 48, 49 year age gap. She's going to turn 25. So former college cheerleader who went to cosmetology school and she's driving his rebrand, Ms. Main Runner up is telling him what to do with look younger on a college campus by getting a Hulu docu series. What's next? Is Belichick going to get Botox? Like how far do we take this?
Shedeur Sanders
And.
Jason McIntyre
And I just, I get worried. I spent some time last night looking for Jordan Hudson interviews and good luck finding her Speak. There's literally, it's just photos of them now. They're wacky photos like yoga on the beach. And I get it, it's, you know, young love or puppy love or whatever they want to call it. But this to me, folks, I know we're excited for Arch Manning Ohio State this weekend. As the kids like to say, low key. I can't wait for the North Carolina debut. This is either going to be awesome or it's going to be a spectacular disaster train wreck that you can't look away from. Let's go to Rachel Nichols with the news. No, no, no, no.
Shedeur Sanders
Turn on the news.
Jason McIntyre
This is the Herd line news.
Rachel Nichols
Jason, let's start with some big news out of D.C. that's right, my hometown. Terry McLaurin has reportedly agreed to a three year, 96 million dollar extension with the Commanders after a long off season of contract negotiations and drama. Now Jaden Mc, Jaden Daniels in Washington can put all that behind them. Go full steam ahead. What do you think? What do you think the outlook for the Commanders is considering they're now the ship's all there, everyone's there.
Jason McIntyre
So this, I forgot. This is your team.
Rachel Nichols
Yeah, baby.
Jason McIntyre
It's interesting. Why did this have to last so long? Why did it get dragged out? I hope this is where Micah comes to a resolution with the Cowboys. But Yeah, I love McLaurin staying with with Washington. Their offense is going to be good. Rachel, that defense has some questions.
Rachel Nichols
That's the nicest thing anyone has said about that defense. Look, let's talk about the bright spots, right?
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, yeah. Be positive. Yes, please. A lot of negativity from.
Rachel Nichols
No, no, no. But just because McLaurin just signed, right. He was Daniel's favorite receiver. Right. Caught 13 of his 25 touchdown passes, especially the deep balls. And he has been on par with other excellent receivers over the last few years. Two Pro bowl appearances in the last three years. So the idea of the comfort factor for Daniels I think is going to be a very big deal. Having him there on week one and the whole ball game right now in Washington is make Jaden Daniels comfortable and continue with his progression because there is often that second year slump.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. We saw with CJ Stroud a little bit so Jaden was unbelievable on fourth down last year. High leverage plays. He always seemed to deliver. That's going to be tough to duplicate. Do you have any concerns about them returning to the playoffs? NFC's kind of stacked.
Rachel Nichols
Yeah, I don't have a concern about them returning to the playoffs, but I don't think they're necessarily returning to the championship game. Right. So I'll doubt that.
Jason McIntyre
I'll agree.
Rachel Nichols
Right. So I mean, you know, the defense is going to continue to be an issue. We have to see if teams have figured out not just Daniels but Kingsbury's offense and things in that second year. What else do they have to show for themselves? They have beefed up a little bit on the line, which is good news. But I just, you can't get around the fact that they are right at the bottom. I mean they could be a bottom five defense this year. So there's only so far you can go with that.
Jason McIntyre
Let me ask you about Joe Washington. We don't call them Redskins, but from the Redskins era.
Rachel Nichols
Yes.
Jason McIntyre
Gary Clark was my favorite. I know a lot of people love art monk, but McLaren. Some of his numbers line up with like all time greats for Washington. People don't realize it.
Rachel Nichols
No. It's a good comp, by the way, just in terms of the way he moves on the field. Yeah, I, I think this had to get done. There was a point earlier this season where McLaren asked for a trade because it wasn't getting done. The hangup was a little bit about his age. Right. He's 30 years old. That tends to be the beginning of the downslope for a lot of receivers. But if you look at the guys who have signed contracts around the time, around the amount of money that he has signed for, they're all around his age. They're 30, 31, 32. He is the sixth best paid receiver this year. With this new deal, I would take.
Jason McIntyre
Him over iuk, wouldn't you? I mean IUK plus iuk's hurt. He's less of a headache than Tyreek Hill. Again, low bar, but yeah, St Brown is really good. AJ Brown's excellent. I mean I would take McLaurin over DK Metcalf. I mean, Metcalf's also getting up there in age, but huh.
Rachel Nichols
Metcalf was sort of the standard he was going for financially. Metcalf's at 33. This new deal puts him at 32. So he got right around that park.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. Hey, 32 mil.
Rachel Nichols
Yeah.
Jason McIntyre
Enjoy it.
Rachel Nichols
The Commanders have the eighth hardest schedule in the NFL this year. That should probably be a factor two that we discuss as we figure this out. But good news out of camp this morning and those of us in D.C. will take it. All right, we got to move on to your favorite quarterback. Yes. You know him, you love him. Justin Field, Aaron Rodgers. Earlier this offseason he acknowledged this might be his final NFL season. But you know, a little, little change over the weekend hasn't fully ruled out a return to 2026. In an appearance on Cam Hayward's podcast, DK Metcalf put his QB on the spot when discussing. Not this season, next season. Take a listen.
Matt Mosley
I think we're gonna do some special things this year. Looking forward to it. And you know, maybe we can run it back.
Jason McIntyre
Maybe. Did you see the delayed spark is like. Yeah, maybe.
Rachel Nichols
I mean, you know, Aaron told Pat McAfee earlier this summer that this was going to be his last ride. Do you take that more seriously? Do you take this more seriously? Aaron's got to get through this season.
Jason McIntyre
Seriously in general. I mean, I mean from the, the bashing of political folks to the darkness retreat to what like every X girlfriend said about him. Danica Patrick on. I mean, I, I just can't take him seriously. I don't. Plus he was a disappointment with my Jets.
Matt Mosley
Yeah.
Jason McIntyre
But I'm sure they'll, you know, they'll be plucky. And I, I think the jets come after him on opening week like big time, like heavy. I mean, you saw his preseason. He's not moving, not like playing in preseason, but like the snaps he's taking with the team. He's immobile. I think they come after him heavy. And no paybacks for Aaron in, in week one for my Jets.
Rachel Nichols
I mean, look, this conversation about next season might be a moot point. I mean, I don't know how far he's going to last this season.
Jason McIntyre
That's a turning point.
Rachel Nichols
42 years old and the idea, by the way, you know how many 42 year old quarterbacks have played at least 10 games in one season?
Jason McIntyre
It's got to be Tom Brady and Warren Moon.
Rachel Nichols
Maybe Tom Brady and Tom Brady. Oh, that's it. And you, sir, are no Tom Brady.
Jason McIntyre
Oh, that was ours.
Rachel Nichols
Okay, there we go. Let's talk about the Giants wrapping up their preseason. And despite great play from Jackson Dart, they will in fact start Russell Wilson under center in week one against the Commanders. Russ officially the starter. There have been questions about whether Dart lands in the depth chart, whether they leaving him the door open for him to come in in the Middle of the season, what do you think of the decision? Because, you know, there's a lot of Jackson Dart love in the New York area.
Jason McIntyre
Everybody loves shiny new things. He's brand new. You know, he's. He looks the part at the podium. One thing I noticed, Rachel, early on and. And you would go to these press conferences after me, he looks at the media member and tries to, like, say their name sometimes. He's really forming that bond. If you. And they, you know, the media, we love that when they talk about us. So I think he's playing all his cards right. And, you know, if you have to say, Jay, will he start a game before Thanksgiving? I think he will.
Rachel Nichols
Look, first of all, no one is more popular on a football team than the backup quarterback. So this is right in line. I think you have to start with Wilson because you kind of can't go backward, right. If Wilson doesn't do well enough and the Giants have the toughest strength of schedule in the NFL, so it is more likely than not that there will be sputtering from that offense. Right. Then you can pull the vet for the younger kid. But if you put the kid in first and he has all of the those problems, it is very hard to mentally get Russell Wilson back from, hey, you went away from me. I was supposed to be the starter here in my mind when I came in and. And you screwed me. So now I'm going to come in and pick up this kid's pieces. That is a much harder dynamic as a coach to deal with. So I wasn't surprised at all to see this news.
Jason McIntyre
So what, Let me ask you, though. Jameis Winston is also very popular. Seems like he's already won over the locker room. Who do you think starts as the backup? Because it might be Winston, just for being a veteran, you know, if something happens to Russ, I don't think you're ready for Jackson dart like week one or two.
Rachel Nichols
No, it might be Winston because of exactly what you said, but I think Jameson Jameis is more in there as sort of a guy to bring the quarterback room together. That's very popular with his teammates. He's a real leader in that whole group, and I think they see him more in that role. It's almost like a vet at the end of an NBA bench or something where their future is obviously not Jameis Winston. So, yes, he might be number two on the depth chart, but I would say that if Russell Wilson doesn't end up finishing the season as the starter, you will see Jackson dart at some point.
Jason McIntyre
I mean, Rachel, look at that. So Kansas City's got a really good defense. Spagnolo is excellent. Chargers defense should be very, very good. You get a respite with the Saints. But Eagles, Broncos, Eagles, yeah. That could be the two best defenses in the NFL for three weeks in a row. And then the Niners with Robert Saleh who by mid season should be hitting his form. So yeah, I, I, I don't feel great about Russ. I don't feel great about the giants despite their 30 preseason. Right.
Rachel Nichols
Yeah, yeah. I mean, look, the Giants had such a dismal season last year that I think Giants fans out there are just like, please don't make me embarrassed to be alive every week of the NFL season anymore. And I think they'll improve on their win total. How could you not? Right? So the success for the Giants, fortunately the bar for them is low. And success for them could mean a five or six win season.
Jason McIntyre
Does Brian Dable survive this season?
Rachel Nichols
I think that depends on the way that they win or lose. Right. Because the strength of schedule. Everyone realizes how tough this is with this group. But I think that it sort of depends on is it heartbreaking, you know, close losses? Is it they just get completely, you know, f doubt that kind of thing. I mean, the giants are returning 10 of 11 starters on offense and this was an offense that could barely win a game last year.
Jason McIntyre
Oh, so. And the only non returner, Russ, I guess.
Rachel Nichols
Right.
Jason McIntyre
Oh, wow.
Rachel Nichols
So I, I think that if they don't do well, you got to look up a little higher.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah.
Rachel Nichols
And the first one to go know.
Jason McIntyre
How attractive a job that is. All right, Rachel with the news.
Matt Mosley
Yeah, well, that's the news and thanks.
Jason McIntyre

Back here on the herd. Matt Mosley has covered the Cowboys for decades, and I'm sure he's seen a contract squabble or two. So let's bring him in to discuss Micah vs. Jerry Matmos, host of the Doomsday podcast. Doomsday. Very apropos of this situation between Micah and Jerry. How you doing, Matt? How's it holding up covering this nonsense? Can I call it that?
Matt Mosley
It is. And. But when you. Since I came on with the parcels in 2003, so I have a great running start to this nonsense. And so this to. I think it's kind of shocking to some people, but you know that this kind of. But to me, this one really goes hand in hand with this new documentary. And I think that has, I think Jerry has loved everything that is going on with this. The only strange thing about this, I've never seen Jerry go quite as much on these, like, media tours as he's on right now, separate of the documentary. Like, this is a, this is a man trying to win the public over on a contract negotiation. And I've never really seen him stoop to that. And it's not going to work. It's not. I mean, there's no, like, nobody, no Cowboys fans are suddenly going, you know what? Mike is being extremely selfish and we don't like Micah. These fans for over 30 years now have had great practice at despising this owner and learning to be angry at him at all times. So Jerry is really wasting his time in trying to get people because first of all, people sort of understand how business works. And Jerry eliminating the agent, trying to act like, hey, we've already agreed to a deal. It's completely, it's a very, very strange process that we've watched play out. And I've watched a bunch of crazy ones. In fact, the night he cut Quincy Carter, I ended up at a bar with Jerry and he talked, we talked all into the evening. That's the great, like, it's the love hate thing with Jerry. Yes, he's wild. But the greatest thing about him is when something like this is happening, there's a chance we may run into him at a bar and he'll tell us everything. And there's almost never been an owner in the history of sports like this. So it's, it's the media. If you ever wonder, like they get tired of Jerry, the answer is no, because he constantly is helping us accessible. It's, it's, yeah, it's, it'll. We never want him to step off the main stage.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. So it's. I totally forgot that Jerry is on a bit of a media tour. He was on that show, Billy Bob Thornton, the Texas oil show. I can't remember the name of it now, but Landman. Landman, yes. Excellent show, by the way. Highly recommended. So he was on there, remember he had a little spot and then he did some media around that. Then he's got the series now on Netflix and now he's got this contract squabble. So it's almost like Jerry just wants to stay in the limelight. And it's less about the Parsons deal, but it's more about. Hey, hey, talk to me, people. I'm here, talk to me. Is that, do you get that vibe?
Matt Mosley
Only for about 40 years have I gotten that vibe. No, but he's constantly at the center of attention. And by the way, go back and watch his performance in Landman. I mean, that was. And that's why, you know, people say, well, Jerry's lost a step. Or like with these presidents that we've had recently and we're looking at the lucidity of certain people. I would always say, well, how would you ever know with Jerry, like if he truly lost a step? And when you watch this documentary, he's still such an incredible storyteller, but he, he still has the belief. And that's why he invites these people to have sit down interviews. That's why he went on with Michael Irvin the other day because, like, he really, really gets pr. Let me tell you where he didn't get pr. And that's when he started the Cowboys. That was the biggest PR blunder ever. And he'll never top that one. And that was the firing of Tom Landry. And he got really bad. And I could even remember her name. I think she's still around. Lisa Lemaster was her name. She was like a big time PR crisis management consultant. And she convinced Jerry, you should go fire Tom Landry. Yourself. The dumbest move he's ever made. He's told me that. He's admitted that to me before. And Bum Bright, the owner at the time, hated Tom Landry and would have loved to go fire Tom Landry. And Jerry thought it would be honorable to go do it himself. And it blew up in his face, and it was horrible. And so it's interesting how Jerry has gone to extremely hated to he and Jimmy being beloved in the 90s, and by the late 90s, he's hated again because he was again, Jimmy and Jerry. That was both their fault. And I think kind of both of them would admit that. But obviously, to this day, fans believe that it was Jerry mostly at fault in that divorce. And that was probably one of the worst divorces in NFL history. And it could have robbed Cowboys fans of at least two more Super Bowls if those guys could have even made it. You know, we. We see relationships j. Mac like that we know are ill fated. That was one of them. That was one of them. But if they could have made it 10 years. No, they could have had five of 10. They could have had five. They could have had five Super Bowls. They only had two, right? Because he ran them off and Switzer got the third one.
Jason McIntyre
Yes. Good memory. Let me just quickly ask about this back mri. So Schottenheimer said it came back pretty clean, which is not 100%, but it sounds like it's close. So then Micah's seen at the game laying down on the table, and then he's, oh, well, I got the back injury. I'm just wondering, do you foresee Micah? Here's the images of him lying down. Do you see him saying, hey, my independent doctor says my back's not clear. I'm not risking it. Sorry, guys. And then it gets really, really ugly. Do you think we get there?
Matt Mosley
That's interesting. I believe. And the team doctor for the Cowboys happens to be a longtime friend of mine. And he hasn't told me this, but I believe that was one of the cleanest MRIs in NFL history. And I believe some of this Diggs stuff, the Trayvon Diggs and the. And I mean, I mean, McLaurin suddenly had an injury, right? It's like he's gonna have to sit out a couple of weeks. Oh, he signed a 3 year, 96 million dollar deal. Feeling better. MRIs look good. Where things are looking clean. So Micah did something embarrassing. And I like Micah, and I think Micah is a very fun guy. He's an incredible player. I do think he's Savvy. That was beneath him, what he did the other night. And it under. Here's what he didn't mean to do. He loves this new head coach, but things like that undermine the head coach. And here's what needs to happen in a situation like that. This would have been what happened with Bill Parcells back in the day. Somebody had to go tell him, hey, Mike is sleeping over on the table. And then. And then Shoddy could have gone over and said a word and shown some toughness, but you can't have that going on back there. That whole thing was an embarrassment. I've. I've been involved in covering standoffs for years. One was Bill Parcells and Larry Allen back in the day. And Larry wasn't working out, mainly because he was kind of out of shape that time in 2003. But I'll tell you that you talk about one of the worst journalistic moments for me as a young reporter, very young at the time, in my late 20s, they call me and go, matt, we need you to go. You're the only one that Larry Allen will talk to. We need you to go over to his house. Now, that's fun. About 8 o' clock on a Monday evening in a summer when he's refusing to show up for training to knock at Larry Allen's door and to have his wife answer and say something along the lines, oh, God, they're sending reporters over here. I've never wanted out of a neighborhood as quickly as that. Can you imagine Larry Allen at £350? So anyway, that, that, that did not help our relationship. That ended. That ended like a lot of my relationships do.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. All right, we. Last question. We got two minutes left. Is Micah Parsons on the field in Week 1 against the Eagles?
Matt Mosley
Yes. Oh, yes.
Jason McIntyre
I like it.
Matt Mosley
No, there's no. And again, you're right. They could come up with some sort of injury excuse or something weird like that. But remember who Jerry is and remember how much he loves the pageantry and the circus of all of this. And the last minute, get the deal signed is kind of a fun thing for him. Yeah, Dak got one of his deals done the morning of the first game. CD and Zeke's were done four or five days. Every one of these holdouts end in the Cowboys capitulating, right? I mean, name me one that they've won. Like, well, look at the Cowboys. They, they, they won this negotiation. Zeke, Zach. I mean, every cd, they all end in the deals getting done.
Jason McIntyre
Just make sure. So, Matt, your headline on your website, when this Happens podcast. Big blaring Jerry blinks. You know, it needs to be that because like you said, they always capitulate, right?
Matt Mosley
They do. And, you know, if you would just send me more headlines, I would. I would appreciate it. That would make life easier on me. So.
Jason McIntyre
Matt Mosley, the man with the Doomsday podcast. Great stuff as always, man. Hey, man, you know, when the Cowboys are 5 and 11, you'll be. Or 5 and 12, you'll be right about shoddy getting the show in the door. Can't wait to read those headlines.
Matt Mosley
I know him. I'm a jet rooting for this.
Jason McIntyre
He was a terrible coordinator.
Matt Mosley
When Colin's not here, I just have a chance to really expound and really open up about things. So I think I. I enjoyed that. Yeah, we'll have to do this more often.
Jason McIntyre
All right, man. Have a great one. Matt Mosley, Doomsday podcast. The guy's been around the block. Yeah, Rachel, I like his stuff. He's got.
Rachel Nichols
He's great.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. No. Have you ever gone to the door of an NFL player during negotiations? I haven't door knocked anybody in a while.
Rachel Nichols
You're talking to someone who spent time on Brett Favre's lawn during packers negotiations. So, yeah, I have been there. Now, I know his wife Danna pretty well, so, you know, we got cookies and stuff, so it was a little bit different. Look, the Jerry thing, I gotta say, even if he does end up signing there, even if he does, he's gonna have lost so much money. Like, that's what doesn't make sense for the Cowboys is if they had given these guys extensions when they deserved over the years, they wouldn't be out $60 million, 50 million extra dollars.
Jason McIntyre
So always get it done early. Great point. All right, coming up, is it time to freak out about the Bears offense? You know, cowherds nervous. That's next. Here on the herd.

Hour 1 - Shedeur Sanders Sabotage?
Date: August 25, 2025
Co-hosts: Jason McIntyre, Rachel Nichols
Notable Guest: Matt Mosley (Cowboys reporter, Doomsday Podcast)
This episode is guest-hosted by Jason McIntyre with Rachel Nichols in the studio. The show takes a deep dive into several major NFL storylines as preseason winds down, but the biggest topic—“the most hyped 5th round pick in the history of football”—is Shedeur Sanders’ disastrous preseason outing for the Cleveland Browns. The hosts examine whether Sanders is unfairly criticized or actually being sabotaged, and break down the implications for the Browns and Sanders’ immediate future in the NFL. The hour also covers the escalating standoff between Cowboys ownership and star Micah Parsons, blockbuster contract news in Washington, the Russell Wilson/Jackson Dart situation, and a revealing segment on Bill Belichick’s new life at UNC.
Jason McIntyre (on Shedeur Sanders’ stat line):
“If you're keeping track at home, Rachel and I had more net passing yards than Shedeur Sanders did on Saturday night. Folks, this was bad.” (06:10)
Shedeur Sanders (postgame frustration):
“You want to be that alpha, you want to be that dog, you want to be out there in that final two minute drive.” (07:13)
Rachel Nichols (on Commanders’ outlook):
“The whole ball game right now in Washington is make Jaden Daniels comfortable and continue with his progression.” (26:51)
Jason (on Jerry’s negotiation style):
“I'm a thousand percent siding with Micah Parsons here. A thousand! It's not even close.” (13:09)
Matt Mosley (on Jerry Jones and PR):
“Cowboys fans…have had great practice at despising this owner…Jerry is really wasting his time in trying to get people [on his side].” (40:40)
Rachel (on Giants’ low expectations):
“Giants fans out there are just like, please don’t make me embarrassed to be alive every week…Success for them could mean a five or six win season.” (34:42)
Matt Mosley (on past Cowboys’ negotiations):
“Every one of these holdouts end in the Cowboys capitulating, right? I mean, name me one that they've won.” (49:16)
The show maintains a playful, often irreverent but analytical tone rooted in the personalities of Jason McIntyre and Rachel Nichols. While poking fun (sometimes harshly) at NFL sagas and media narratives, the hosts provide sharp context and analysis, especially regarding player-team power dynamics and the outsize influence of media hype (as seen with Shedeur Sanders). Guest Matt Mosley gives the Cowboys’ side both depth and humor.
For listeners:
This episode is packed with inside analysis on ongoing NFL controversies, especially Shedeur Sanders’ media storm and the dysfunctional Dallas contract saga. It blends news, humor, topical social media critique (“nepo baby” talk, media obsessions), and a bit of football wonkery, making it both entertaining and informative whether you’re following the headlines or not.
