So somebody in the world of football already feeling the heat. Already feeling the heat. We'll explain who that is coming up here in just a couple of moments from now. Jonas Knox in for Colin Cowherd here on the Herd on Fox Sports Radio. You can always find this show on the iHeartRadio app. You can always find us on hundreds of affiliates all across the country and wherever you are making us a part of your Labor Day Monday, we appreciate you doing so as we take you all the way up until 3 o' clock Eastern Time, noon Pacific. By the way, I do a show during the week. If you're not familiar with LaVar Arrington and Brady Quinn called two pros and a Cup of Joe, which you can hear on these Fox sports radio affiliates. 6 to 9am Eastern Time, 3 to 6am Pacific Time. You can also catch me on Saturdays here on fox Sports Radio, 2 to 4pm Eastern Time, 11am to 1pm Pacific Time. And, and I bring up Saturday because this past Saturday, you know, doing a show, the Ohio State Texas game is going on and I'm watching the reaction to Arch Manning struggles and then just kind of seeing maybe the overreaction to some things throughout college football. I was making this point earlier, I said, look, I mean, I like the fact that the College Football Playoff gives teams an opportunity to suffer a loss, to struggle a little bit early on. I like that because it allows you to go through those difficulties and still not be punished so much that you can't play for something bigger. Right? This isn't like boxing where you would be punished if you Lost your perfect record. All right, they're more like the ufc where like, hey, you got a couple of losses, whatever. If you're next in line for a title shot, you're getting a title shot. Like, look, I mean, whoever's next in line, you got to do the work. But whoever's next in line, you're going to get your opportunity. The college football playoffs allow teams to do that. So you could lose early on in the season. You could be a Clemson and lose and everything's going to be fine. You could be a Notre Dame and lose to Miami and everything's going to be fine. Christ. Notre Dame lost last year to Northern Illinois and still figured out a way to get in. Like you can be in Ohio State and lose to Michigan and you're still gonna have an opportunity. And then there's Alabama and then there's Kaylin Debor and taking over for Dick Saban. And eh, you open up this year, you take on Florida State who won two games a year ago, and you just get annihilated at the line of scrimmage, which just didn't happen when Nick Saban was the coach at Alabama. Right. It just looked a little bit different. And so they go into Tallahassee and get stomped out and all of a sudden Kaylin DeBoer is feeling the heat. And he spoke about the performance of Alabama following the loss to Florida State.
Kaylin DeBoer
I choose to believe we got a good football team, but, you know, we can't play on our heels. Like we're not going to be what we think we can be what we want to be if that's the case. And so again, that falls on everyone. Don't just put, point the finger at the players. You know, give, give the. I know the both sides of the ball. I mean, you kind of know what you're going to see. But going into the game, but you know, with new coordinators, but we got to, you know, we talked in the locker room. There's, there's no excuse about what happened. We step on the football field, they step on the football field and we got to play ball. We got to play our style of ball. And you know, last year isn't this year and it's going to be an uphill climb for us, but you can't think of it in the big scope of things. You got to focus on the moment and the next moment is, is what happens tomorrow.
Jonas Knox
That's Caitlin DeBoer, the Alabama head coach following the loss to Florida State. All of that makes sense and all of that is the probably the right outlook to have, especially after losing that. And as I mentioned earlier, look, these are difficult games, especially if you go on the road. If you go on the road in a difficult environment early on, it's what makes the LSU win so impressive. But if you go on the road early on, I don't care what Florida State was last year, they're not a two win team. Like, I don't see Florida State winning one more game the rest of the year. That's a difficult place. Everybody's fired up. Fans have been licking the lid in the parking lot for hours at that point. Probably stayed up from the night before. But that's a, that's a fiery environment. So I look at that, I go, look, man. Yeah, it's a difficult loss, I get it. But you can bounce back, much like Texas, you can bounce back, but it's Alabama. And that's the problem. And that's the issue. And that's why there are differences here. It's what makes college football great. To where I'm not condoning poisoning a tree that's been there for 200 years, okay? But that happened and it happens in college football. Did anybody see the Alabama fan who went viral? Somebody zoomed in on an Alabama fan as they were getting stomped out by Florida State and the guy just literally threw up a middle finger. He knew he was on camera, he knew it was in the stadium. He was, he was your typical Alabama fan. Polo shirt, a slouch hat with the, with the bill curved so much that you could barely see his eyes. Camera pops up on him and he just throws him the bird. Couldn't even care less. That's Alabama. That's, that's the way they operate. As somebody who worked and spent time in SEC country doing radio back in the day, somebody who's been to Alabama, that fan base has a certain level of expectation. And that certain level of expectation is because of Nick Saban. He's the greatest ever do it. And Kaylin DeBoer has taken over a near impossible job because to be the guy after Nick Saban is a real pain in the. It just is like that. That's a difficult task to have to take over that job. And that's why when Caleb took the job was like, I get it, he's getting pa. But that's a lot to ask. Just to give you an idea the level of success that Nick Saban had at Alabama. Just to give you an idea, Kaylin DeBoer, already in his time at Alabama has four losses. Verse unranked teams. Nick Saban had four losses versus unranked teams in 17 years. Like, we got a problem. It's a problem. Okay? There's already people calling for Kaylin divorce job. All right? There's already the, the fans are already out. They, they're already out in full force. There's gotta be some changes here. The things have got it would, you know, we gotta, somebody's gotta do something. This is unacceptable. And Alabama is probably going to turn out to be a pretty good team. And look, because of the expanded college Football playoff, maybe Alabama is going to bounce back. Maybe they'll go on a run in the sec. Maybe everything's going to be fine. Or Alabama fans are finally realizing, yeah, that's not Nick Saban. And it doesn't mean that Caleb is not a good coach. He did great things at Washington. It doesn't mean he's not a good coach. He is. But that job at that school with that program and those expectations is a different level. It just is. I was born and raised in Southern California, right Now, some people call it the hate. Oh, five. Right. But I was born and raised in Thousand Oaks, California. I liked college football growing up. I was, I was a fan of college football, obviously. You know, the great Miami teams back in the day. I like college football, of course, the traditions, all that stuff, but I didn't get college football. I liked it, but I didn't totally get it until I started doing radio in the south and I realized, oh God, it's just different here. It really is. And that's not to diminish what USC did with Matt Leinert and Reggie Bush and those guys and Pete Carroll, that's not to diminish them. But even then, at the height of USC and the dominant program that they had, even then, some of the great players and greatest teams we've ever seen, it's not even close to what it is in the south during college football season. It isn't even, not even a fraction. And we're talking about like mid tier SEC teams like South Carolina when I was there and Steve Spurrier was the coach, they were okay. They weren't competing for a national championship. That wasn't happening, but they were okay. Fan base is nuts. What do you think Alabama's like? Alabama then? And that was before Nick Saban put it, put together this legendary run in Tuscaloosa. That was even then. That fan base was crazy. Like they, they live and breathe and die. College football, that's all they care about. So while Kalyn DeBoer is a very good coach who can withstand a lot of the heat and other places in Tuscaloosa. That's a tall task. That's a really tall task. Nebraska, great program, right? They couldn't wait to get rid of Bo Pelini. And Bo Pelini was winning nine games a year constantly. Not good enough. Not good enough. See ya. Okay, how's that going? I mean, Matt Rule, maybe he has him back to prominence, maybe he can get him there, but that wasn't good enough. And whatever Kaylin DeBoer does, short of Nick Saban is not going to be good enough. He took on an impossible task. He's expected to take over and replace the greatest ever do it. And on top of that, in a place that, that is obsessed with that program. Obsessed. They care about football in the south more than you care about your kids. They are obsessed. And so whatever Kaylin DeBoer says after the game and maybe they'll bounce back and maybe they'll respond and maybe they'll go on a heater, there's still going to be majority of Alabama fans that are like, yeah, but he's not Sabin. And I got news for you, he's never gonna be Saban. He's going to feel the heat because he took on the impossible task of replacing the greatest ever do it. And more often than not, that never ends well. At the Jonas Knox on X onas Knox show on Instagram is where you can follow along as we are in for the herd here on Fox Sports Radio. It's a herd here on Fox Sports Radio. Jonas Knox in for Colin, by the way, Coming up here a little over 10 minutes from now in the Herdline news, we've got a proof that there is one fan base and one venue in the NFL that goes harder than the others. We'll get into that for you again, coming up here a little over 10 minutes from now. So Calvin Ridley of the Tennessee Titans, he spoke recently. He was talking with espn and I don't know if you remember Calvin Ridley. I called him the people's wide receiver because while he was away from playing football, the guy was out there doing like seven, seven leg parlays and all sorts of fun stuff like that. I'm like, you know what, man? He's one of us. Look at that guy's just like us. That guy's just like us. It's like when Christian Bale was seen driving like a Tacoma. That's like something like, like a 2005 Tacoma feel like, oh, my, look at that. He's a celebrity. He drives a pickup truck. Yeah, it's just like us. Calvin Ridley out there doing seven leg parlays just like us. But Calvin Ridley spoke with ESPN and talked about the suspension. Quote, the suspension gave me time to rest, get physically better and mentally stronger. After that year, I was ready to come back. He talked about the gambling he took part in, said, I downloaded the app, sitting there not knowing that I was breaking a rule or anything. And he bet on two NFL games. There were two NFL games. None on his team, I don't believe. But he bet on two games. He said, oh, yeah, those are the only two that I bet on. It's like, okay, you know, maybe instead of, like, making Calvin Ridley explain himself, maybe instead of making Calvin Ridley sit here and be criticized and judged, maybe instead of being a wise ass and looking at Calvin Ridley and saying, you know what, man? How could you urinate away potentially your NFL career? You talk about loving football as a kid and blah, blah, blah, you know, maybe instead of taking that approach, we could give Calvin Ridley a round of applause and say, you know what? Guy was ahead of his time. That guy was ahead of his time. No, keep it going, man. I'm serious. And that's enough. This is a judgment free zone here on Fox Sports Radio. On this show when I'm hosting. Tell you why. According to an estimate released by the American Gaming Association, NFL betters are expected to wager approximately $30 billion on the league this season. With legal sports books in the U.S. by the way, it's not even legal in every state. There's like 12 states that are still holding out. California is, too. What a shock. Wait, what a stun California camp. Okay. What a. What a stunner. $30 billion. That's an 8.5% increased from last year. Okay? That's what we're talking about. Calvin really was just ahead of his time. You know, he saw what was happening, just like a lot of people saw what was happening. And when you think about how much people are going to. And look, there's a. And I get it. There are some people who do have issues, all right? Shohei Ohtani's interpreter. That guy had some problems, right? Got some problems. You know, he's betting on, like, you know, Indian Premier League cricket and, you know, horse races overseas where the horses run backwards. Like, it just like. Like. I get it, okay? I understand. Some people have a problem. And I've heard some people say that this is concerning if we're opening this up, you know, people could get into financial trouble. People get it, okay? All that's true. But I'm not going to walk by a liquor store and say, you got to shut down, sir or ma', am, because so and so has a drinking problem. No, I'll walk by and say, hey, so and so's got a drinking problem, but if they got cash, I mean, I don't know what to tell you. Like, somebody's gotta scratch the itch. It's not my job to tell the NFL or anybody else or anybody that wants to partake in gambling, hey, you shouldn't do that. And here are the pitfalls. Not everybody falls into the open sewer that somebody took the cap off of. Not everybody falls. Some people are aware, yeah, this could be a problem. Got to keep my eyes open, head on a swivel. And you look at those numbers. $30 billion and it's not even legal in every state. I talked about it earlier. You saw the numbers of the preseason. You see, you saw the preseason numbers, like, the viewership, 2.2 million, like, up 17% on last year, et cetera, et Cetera, like you don't think that there were some people gambling on the preseason? There were. Want to know how I know? Because I'm one of them. I don't think people understand. And, and, and look, they've welcomed gambling in and I get it. There's going to be some athletes. I think the Cleveland Guardians, you know, they used to be called something else. But listen, we're not going to go down that road, right? You can watch major league if you want to see that. Right. It's a damn shame. But the Cleveland Guardians have got two pitchers who are on leave and they're investigating like really good pitchers. And they're investigating them because they're like, man, we really saw a spike in betting. Yeah. What was it? You know, people betting whether or not the next pitch was going to be a ball or a hit by pitch. And then lo and behold, the very next pitch was way outside, like a lot further outside than normal. Okay, yeah, that might be an issue, that might be a problem. But that doesn't mean you just stop. That doesn't mean you just say, no, no, no, nobody can partake, nobody can be evolved. And I think that the NFL and I think that people are slowly pulling back on the restrictions. You've seen how they've adjusted the punishments to athletes who get popped. You've seen how it used to be all everybody's gone for a full season or everybody's gone for six games. Then it's like kind of, kind of work with you on this. It wasn't that long ago that Tony Romo, before he was golfing and part time broadcasting. It wasn't that long ago that Tony Romo wanted to set up a fantasy football convention in Las Vegas. And the NFL said, no, no, you can't. Like, we don't like that. We don't like the, the idea of gambling getting involved here. Ten years later, 30 billion, 30 billion is going to be gambled on the NFL. And I think the NFL realized there's an opportunity to make money, but I think they've also realized, yeah, there's going to be the potential that guys are going to go sideways. Like there is the potential of that. You've seen it happen in the NBA. Was it John Tay Porter, like you've seen, Listen, like, yeah, that there's the potential of that, but it doesn't mean that you just get rid of it for everybody. Like Calvin Ridley served as punishment, he learned his lesson, quote unquote. Other guys have, you know, gotten popped for it and they've been Punished for it. But the fact that you see so many people taking part, so many, that you're looking at 30 billion up 8.5%. And I got news for 8.5% of 30 billion is a lot. That's a lot. But when you're seeing those numbers and it's still not legal in over 10 states in the country, it's only going to get bigger. That lead we mentioned earlier, the NFL has on every single sport, based on the ratings that came out for preseason games, that leads only getting bigger. There's going to be more of this. There's going to be the potential of more players coming up or popping up that are gambling on games or partaking in games. I don't think it's the worst thing in the world. I'm one of those people who takes Pete Rose's side from this standpoint, if he didn't bet against his team, I do look at that. Different than betting on your team. I'm sorry, I do. Because there's nothing wrong with supporting your team and betting on your team. Trust me. I've rooted for awful teams, awful teams growing up, and if there was an opportunity to bet on them, I was going to do it. I would never bet against him. Wanted to be loyal, but I was good. So I'm one of those people. I know it's a little crazy, but I'm one of those people. Looks at this. Well, you know, if he didn't bet, like, I can understand the punishments and all that, but if he didn't bet against his team as a manager, I think we do look at that a little bit differently than betting on your team. Calvin really getting punished and opening up about it and all that. All these other guys that have been punished, this stuff's going to continue to pop up. I got news for you. It's going to happen. When the super bowl was in Vegas a couple of years ago, I thought it was ridiculous that the NFL was like, oh, we're banning anybody on either team. Anybody on either team that is seen in a casino, they'll be banned from the ga. Like, they're talking about all these punishments. And I remember at. At the point being like, so wait a second. You mean to tell me if somebody walks up and Jake Moody's playing a penny slot at the Luxor? Like, do you mention, like, you walk by, hey, look, it's Jake Moody. He's playing penny slots. He's playing the double dolphin game at the Luxor, or Buffalo stampede at the Luxor. You mean to tell me he's not going to be allowed to play in the super bowl because he's betting at a slot machine. And I think the NFL starting to loosen some of those restrictions as far as, yeah, maybe, maybe it's not the end of the world, but it's also not the end of the gambling infusion in the NFL. If it's 30 billion this year, it's only gonna be more next year, especially when you've got 10 plus states that still don't allow it. This is only the tip of the iceberg. There's going to be more of it and there's probably going to be more paranoia that comes along with it. At the Jonas Knox on X onasnox on Instagram is where you can follow along if you'd like to. By the way, we are going to tell you, coming up here in a little over 15 minutes from now, we are going to tell you about a front office executive in the NFL who missed a pretty obvious, pretty obvious detail of his assessment on his starting quarterback. We will have that for you again here a little over 15 minutes from now. But right now it's time for the second installment of the Herdline news. No, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Herd line news. All right, Lee Dalap, what do we got? By the way, Lee, you're a degenerate flunky gambler. Are you still, you still betting on horse races at dive bars?
Lee Dalap
Oh, yeah, that's my favorite thing to do. Just, you know, minimum bet.
Jonas Knox
Hey, let me just tell you something for anybody listening across the country. I know there's, there's racetracks all around. You want to go have a damn good time during the NFL season, go to Santa Anita. Oh, yeah, that's a damn good time. Let's go live to our. I have a thought on Gambling Insider, Chris. Perfect for the latest, I think. I'm actually taking a weekend off in October to go to Del Mar for the Breeders Cup. Yeah. Look like that's, that's, yeah, it's love football on the phone. It's just Santa Anita racetrack is one of the most underrated venues that there is to go to. It's just a tremendous time, especially during football season. People out there betting their life savings on the three horse in the fourth race. There's nothing better.
Lee Dalap
My dad learned how to drive chauffeuring.
Jonas Knox
My grandfather up for carriage racing. Yeah. In, in Toledo. That's right. Like carriage racing is some real dirtbag stuff. Hey, let me tell you, let me tell you something. The late, great Frank P.A. bullock, Fox Sports radio legend here. Frank used to go to the Go Betha races all the time. That guy used to fish, eat terrible food and gamble on horses. Nothing wrong with that. What do we got, Lee? Well, what goes great with a little.
Lee Dalap
Gambling on the game? How about a little cold beer? And for NFL fans, they might be coughing up a pretty penny. Depending on what stadium you're going to during the game. Can you guess which stadium has the highest priced beer?
Jonas Knox
Oh, highest priced SOF ripoff out here.
Lee Dalap
I mean it is, it is up there. It is 14 beers, but there is a few that are a bit more. That being Levi's Stadium, which, which is actually also 14. So it's the same, but the Raymond James Stadium. 14, 25, Allegiant Stadium, 15 bucks. But the top and highest priced beer is Washington Commanders at commanders field. 1650.
Jonas Knox
16. Now are we talking domestic beers?
Lee Dalap
That is a domestic beer. Because if you're gonna go IPA.
Jonas Knox
Yeah, what is it, 25 bucks for an IPA? Yeah, you put that on layaway. So. So a domestic beer at a Commander's game is 1650. Yeah.
Lee Dalap
And I assume that's a tall boy. You know, tall cans, 24 ounces could be 45 if you. Depending on which brand you're going with.
Jonas Knox
Lee, would you break down, just so people understand the vernacular, could you break down just the different beer sizes based on ounce? If you could just.
Lee Dalap
Well, your regular standard beer is going to be 12. 12 ounces.
Jonas Knox
Yeah, but from there.
Lee Dalap
But who, who goes 12 ounces, especially at a, at a game.
Jonas Knox
Typically, if it's going.
Lee Dalap
Typically if it's a draft beer, they'll offer you a 16 ounce pour. Some do 20, 22 ounce. But if you're going with the can, that's a 24 ounce. But often they, oftentimes now they, they give you that extra ounce.25.
Jonas Knox
Those are tall boys.
Lee Dalap
Those are tall boys.
Jonas Knox
Yeah. And then you got your 32s and your 40s and, and all that. It's like, it's like we're talking about guns here.
Lee Dalap
Now do you know or can you guess which stadium has the cheapest beer?
Jonas Knox
Oh, that's, that's a good one. Cheapest for domestic beer because they probably, I mean, it's probably somebody who want, I'll say Jacksonville. I, I gotta think like Atlanta with their whole push to go cheap on food and stuff.
Lee Dalap
Jacksonville is middle of the pack. Atlanta is also somewhere in the middle. Well, kind of near the, near the bottom. But Jacksonville is $10, about 10.25 a beer. Atlanta 8.50. Now the cheapest is Cincinnati $6.80 for a domestic.
Jonas Knox
No wonder they drink so much. But there was a report that came out that Bengals fans drink more than anybod games. Now I get it. Six bucks for a beer, that's a steal. You can't get that anywhere nowadays for domestic beer, that works. Yeah. All right, so I mean, look, you know, at least, I mean they're not paying their players, but at least, you know, they're not, they're not shortchanging their fans on, you know, on, on their beers. Maybe they should charge a little bit.
Lee Dalap
More and then they could, you know, pay their players.
Jonas Knox
Yeah, yeah. So, so Trey Hendrickson, if you've got a gripe against the Bengals, why don't you tell them to, to double up on the prices for their domestic beers and there won't be an issue there.
Lee Dalap
Yeah, they could price and still be middle of the pack on, on price of beer.
Jonas Knox
1650 for a beer to watch the commanders. Good God. For like a Miller Light. What else we got, Lee?
Lee Dalap
Guys, this might be news for you fantasy football players out there. Jaylen Warren reached a two year extension. Details quite, aren't quite out there yet. He's going to still make 7 million this year, but does get 12 million guaranteed. This probably is the last day for a lot of fantasy football drafts.
Jonas Knox
I knew you had a spin on this. Yeah, I knew you had a spin on this.
Lee Dalap
Caleb Johnson is typically going before J. Warren.
Jonas Knox
Right.
Lee Dalap
I remember I was at my draft this weekend and somebody said, jalen Warren. I said, don't you mean Tyler Warren, the rookie tight end for, for Indianapolis? They're like, no, dude, Jalen Warren. I was like, oh yeah, I forgot about him. He's probably pretty good value still. He's probably going to be, you know, he is the starter.
Jonas Knox
So, so you've got now from. For people that are not familiar, Lee's in like, how many different fantasy leagues are you in this year?
Lee Dalap
I am in five.
Jonas Knox
All right.
Lee Dalap
And I've completed three. I got two more today.
Jonas Knox
Now we, we do know based on discussions with Lee on the morning show, two pros and a Cup of Joe with Brady Quinn and Lavar Arrington who aren't here today. We do know that in having those discussions that, that Lee still owes his league money.
Lee Dalap
No, wait.
Jonas Knox
Because you, you were the commissioner of the league. Everybody paid you and then you used the money they paid you with to spend on other things, typically for my other leagues. Okay.
Lee Dalap
So I collect dues for my one league and then I use those dues to basically pay for my dues to the four other leagues. You're doing a fantasy football pyramid scheme, basically. You know, they tried to hold my feet to the. Well, they don't know exactly what I'm doing. But what we were talking about doing is taking all the buy in money and putting it into stock. And then, you know, typically.
Jonas Knox
Oh, for Christ's. He is the Bernie Madoff of fantasy football. What is going on? You gotta stop. This is not. This is not an opt. It's not a get rich plan. Everybody gets fantasy football winning.
Lee Dalap
It's all above board.
Jonas Knox
Board. It's not. It's not. It's not above board because people are asking for their money and you spend it on booze. It's not above board. There's nothing right about this commit.
Lee Dalap
The commission needs his fuel, man.
Jonas Knox
I'll be dragged before Congress. But you've got, you've got two other leagues you're going to be drafting in today. Yeah, two other drafts. Yeah.
Lee Dalap
And for those who know Roberto, he's got me. I told him not to do this, but he's starting my draft about a half hour into my other draft. I told him, don't do that.
Jonas Knox
It's the only time we can fool.
Lee Dalap
Yeah, exactly. That's what he said. And so, yeah, I got a. I got two basically going on at the same time, which is a problem.
Jonas Knox
Wow. All right, well, at least Jalen Warren will be available. What else we got, Lee?
Lee Dalap
Well, maybe some more news for those who are interested. Tyreek Hill is not gonna be a captain on the offense for the Dolphins. He says he still has to prove himself. So quarterback Tua, center Aaron Brewer and fullback Alec Ingold are the current captains.
Jonas Knox
Ooh, that'll teach him. You don't get to wear a C on your jersey. That'll teach him. God. By the way, I think they had a. They had an outside linebackers coach who got arrested for a domestic dispute earlier this weekend or something like that. Like there was that. That popped up with the Dolphins. Obviously, a different. That's a different level of. Of offense as opposed to, you know, Tyree Kill not getting a captain announcement next to his name. But I just get this vibe that this is going to be a rough year for the Dolphins. Like, I just. I just get this feeling that things are going to go off the rails here in Miami. They already kind of have, but, you know, the Tyree Kill stuff, they're basically raking him over the coals, trying to get him to. Oh, he's got, he's got to make nice, he's got to do this, he's got to do that. I mean, he's, he's been apologetic. But, you know, then there was a report that came out that he was talking about teammates needing to be on time and then he was late for like stretching or so it's just, it just feels like it's only a matter of time before Tyree killing the Dolphins have an issue again. You know, that seems to be the way things go there with him. Yeah.
Lee Dalap
Lots of injuries still there on the offensive side, too.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Lee Dalap
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
It's not, not an ideal spot to be in and what you know is probably going to be a runaway for the Buffalo Bills in that division. That was the Herdline news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by the Herd lie news. Jonas Knox in for Colin Coward here on Fox Sports Radio. You can get me on X at the Jonas Knox or you can follow along on Instagram at Jonas Knox. You know, there's a, there's a front office executive in the NFL. He made a statement recently, but he's missing the most obvious part of the issue with his organization. I'll tell you what it is. Next, be sure to catch live editions of the Herd, weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am Pacific. Jonas Knox, Fox Sports Radio in for the Herd here. You can also find us on the iHeartRadio app coming up top of next hour, about 15 minutes from now. There are debuts and then there's this in the world of sports. So you always have instant access to our FOX Sports radio videos on YouTube. So the NFL obviously kicks off this weekend. One of the interesting, compelling games that we're going to get to see is, you know, a couple of old friends reintroducing themselves to each other, the Steelers and the Jets. And you got two quarterbacks swapping places like they've swapped, you know, Aaron Rodgers, now Pittsburgh Steeler. Justin Fields is now a New York Jet. And so there's been this thought that, look, Aaron Rodgers started to play better down the stretch last year, which he did. And based on the production, the Steelers have added quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger retired and probably, actually, if you think about it, maybe the second year, like two years, maybe before Ben Roethlisberger retired, like before the last one, because the last one, I think everybody acknowledged that he was, you know, starting to slow down and it just wasn't the same player. But they've not had high level production at quarterback since probably the second to last year. Ben Roethlisberger was there in Pittsburgh. And so you look at the Aaron Rodgers signing for the Steelers and you go, all right, well, if they could just get that, it's a major upgrade at that position than they've gotten. And Justin Fields reportedly had a chance to go to the Pittsburgh Steel or stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers, sign an extension there, and decided he wanted to go elsewhere because the jets had reportedly offered him a little bit more money. And so now Justin Fields is the quarterback with the jets. And you're hearing these reports about him struggling at training camp and, you know, maybe it didn't. Doesn't look all that good. And there Aaron Glenn's got a players only practice that they called and everything that comes along with it, you know, a couple of weeks ago. And you've got the Jets GM Darren Mugie, who was talking recently and you know, he was asked by, you know, members of the media, like, hey, you know, you've seen sort of a revival for certain quarterbacks in the NFL. Know, guys like Baker Mayfield, guys like Sam Darnold who have gone elsewhere and turned into the player everybody thought they were going to be when they were drafted high. Do you see Justin Fields being one of those guys, I do believe, just going to be one of those guys? And I like, like I just mentioned, I've seen the progress during this camp and look forward to seeing the progress throughout the season as they all come together. Obviously it's his third stop in three years with three different coordinators and a lot of moving parts. So it does take time. But I like where it's at and I look forward to watching the progress. Yeah, so that was Jets GM Darren Mugi saying, look, I do feel like Justin Fields can be one of those guys. I feel like he can be like a Baker Mayfield or a Sam Darnold. The problem is Sam Darnold was a Jet. Like, that's, that's the problem. Okay? Like, that's. I feel like you've kind of identified one of the real issues, all right? And I know that look, Aaron Glenn's there, brand new Jets. Darren Mugies there, it's brand new Jets. I know because we've heard this Time and time again. All right, we heard it, you know, with all these different coach, GM combinations, et cetera, et cetera. But him talking about Justin Fields being another Sam Darnold when Sam Darnold had to become the real Sam Darnold by leaving your franchise speaks volumes about the situation that Justin Fields is in. I. With Woody Johnson there. Good luck. Good luck. Like that. Like, have fun with all that. The Baker Mayfield comp. I understand that that's. That's really the one you look at and go, all right, that. That could be something there. But again, those guys leave those organizations because those organizations are ran poorly. Baker Mayfield left Cleveland because Cleveland turned their back on Baker Mayfield because he struggled during an injury filled year. Like that doesn't get talked about. He tried to play through injuries. It didn't go well. But Baker Mayfield had actually played to a high level before that. They want a playoff game with Baker Mayfield. Like, like he. Like he did good things in Cleveland. But they thought that Deshaun Watson was going to be the upgrade and they thought Baker Mayfield was damaged goods and said, no, no, no, we're now we're. We're. It's. We're finished here. Everything's fine. And what's ironic about that is that Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold's next stops were in the same place. Carolina, who also is run poorly, which is why you got a lot of people going. Like, hey, man, if you're Bryce Young, just survive through this year and hope you get an opportunity with. With an organization that can develop you the right way. Even though I like Dave Canales, I think he's done. I just. I look at the ownership, I go, that's the problem. So Darren Moogie saying, yeah, well, we think Justin Fields could be the next. It's like, no, Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold had to do that because of the organizations they were in. And one of those organizations they were in is the organization that you work for. That's the problem. So whatever Justin Fields, what was decision? And they gave me more money and they gave me this and that, like, okay, but that's part of the issue. Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold had to get away from terrible situations. And it doesn't mean that Sam Darnold is going to go to Seattle and. And he's going to continue to light it up. Like, you know, one of the other guys who had to go somewhere else to get an opportunity, you know, one of those other guys is Geno Smith. Where Gino Smith come from? Oh, the jets too. You don't say. God. God. I feel like. Feel like there's a common denominator here that might be a little part of the problem. Feel like there's a a common thread here through this whole discussion. So best of luck to Justin Fields, but the situation he's in might dictate his outcome, just like it did Sam Darnold and just like it did Geno Smith. Jonas Knox in for the herd here on Fox Sports Radio. And there are debuts in the world of sports. And then there's this. I'll tell you what this is next.

Hour 2 – “Kalen DeBoer is Feelin’ the Heat”
Date: September 1, 2025
Host: Jonas Knox (in for Colin Cowherd)
This hour of The Herd dives into the mounting pressure on new Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer following a tough season-opening loss to Florida State, what it means to inherit a powerhouse program from a legend, and how different fan expectations are in southern college football. The show also tackles the hot-button topic of sports betting in the NFL—referencing Calvin Ridley’s suspension—and explores fan culture, fantasy football quirks, and NFL beer prices in a lively, conversational style.
Jonas Knox sets the stage, noting overreaction to early college football losses is common, but in Alabama, it’s different:
“You can bounce back, much like Texas … but it’s Alabama. And that’s the problem. And that’s why there are differences here. It’s what makes college football great.” (07:44)
Contrast between Kalen DeBoer and Nick Saban’s records:
“DeBoer, already in his time at Alabama, has four losses vs. unranked teams. Nick Saban had four in 17 years.” (08:57)
“I choose to believe we got a good football team, but ... we can’t play on our heels ... Don’t just point the finger at the players ... we gotta play our style of ball … last year isn’t this year and it’s going to be an uphill climb for us.”
(Kalen DeBoer, 06:55)
Jonas reflects on the intense expectations in Tuscaloosa:
“That fan base has a certain level of expectation. And that’s because of Nick Saban. He’s the greatest to ever do it. And Kaylin DeBoer has taken over a near impossible job… The guy after Saban is a real pain in the— it just is.” (08:29)
Colorful fan anecdote:
“Did anybody see the Alabama fan who went viral ... the guy just literally threw up a middle finger … He was your typical Alabama fan. Polo shirt, a slouch hat with the bill curved so much you could barely see his eyes. Camera pops up on him— just throws him the bird. That’s Alabama. That’s the way they operate.” (08:16)
SEC football described as a near-religious experience:
“I liked college football, but I didn’t totally get it until I started doing radio in the south and I realized, oh God, it’s just different here. … They live and breathe and die college football, that’s all they care about.” (09:37)
Comparing Alabama’s expectations to other storied programs:
“Nebraska — great program, right? They couldn’t wait to get rid of Bo Pelini ... Not good enough. How’s that going?” (10:53) “Whatever Kalen DeBoer does, short of Nick Saban, is not going to be good enough.” (11:30)
Knox warns:
“He’s going to feel the heat because he took on the impossible task of replacing the greatest ever do it. And more often than not, that never ends well.” (11:54)
Jonas pivots to recent comments by Calvin Ridley of the Titans, suspended for gambling on NFL games, and uses the moment for a broader discussion about the NFL’s evolving attitude toward betting.
Ridley’s quote:
“The suspension gave me time to rest, get physically better and mentally stronger. After that year, I was ready to come back.” (17:15)
Jonas defends Ridley:
“Maybe instead of making Calvin Ridley sit here and be criticized … maybe we could just give Calvin Ridley a round of applause and say, you know what? Guy was ahead of his time.” (17:41)
Massive explosion in NFL betting:
“NFL betters are expected to wager approximately $30 billion on the league this season. ... That’s an 8.5% increase from last year.” (18:07)
The normalization of sports gambling:
“Ten years ago, Tony Romo wanted to set up a fantasy football convention in Vegas. The NFL said, ‘No, no. You can’t’ ... Now, $30 billion.” (21:50)
Candid personal admission:
“You saw the numbers of the preseason ... like, you don’t think that there were some people gambling on the preseason? There were. Want to know how I know? Because I’m one of them.” (19:23)
On personal responsibility and gambling:
“I’m not gonna walk by a liquor store and say, you gotta shut down, sir or ma’am, because so and so has a drinking problem.” (19:45)
Pete Rose and gambling on your own team:
“I’m one of those people ... if he didn’t bet against his team, I do look at that different than betting on your team. ... There’s nothing wrong with supporting your team and betting on your team.” (23:40)
(29:00 – 37:00)
NFL Beer Prices Across Stadiums:
“1650 for a beer to watch the Commanders. Good God. For like a Miller Light.” (33:08) “No wonder they drink so much. … Bengals fans drink more than anybody at games. Now I get it—six bucks for a beer, that’s a steal.” (32:28)
Fantasy Football Shenanigans:
“I collect dues for my one league and then I use those dues to basically pay for my dues to the four other leagues. ... You’re doing a fantasy football pyramid scheme, basically.” (34:03)
“He is the Bernie Madoff of fantasy football.” (34:52)
NFL Captains & Team News:
“I just get this vibe that this is going to be a rough year for the Dolphins ... it’s just, it just feels like it’s only a matter of time before Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins have an issue again.” (36:09)
(38:00 – 45:00)
Jets GM Darren Mugie compared Justin Fields’ possible turnaround to Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold:
“I do feel like Justin Fields can be one of those guys ... as they all come together. Obviously it’s his third stop in three years ... but I like where it’s at.” (39:59)
Jonas calls out the irony:
“The problem is, Sam Darnold was a Jet. ... Those guys leave those organizations because those organizations are ran poorly. ... Geno Smith—where’d Geno Smith come from? Oh, the Jets, too. You don’t say!” (41:19+)
On Saban vs. DeBoer fan reactions
“People are already calling for Kalen DeBoer's job. … Somebody’s gotta do something. This is unacceptable.” (08:57, Jonas Knox)
Alabama fan culture
“He just throws him the bird. … That’s Alabama. That’s the way they operate.” (08:16, Jonas)
SEC vs. USC Football
“At the height of USC and the dominant program that they had ... it’s not even close to what it is in the south during college football season. Not even a fraction.” (09:45, Jonas)
On Calvin Ridley & gambling
“He’s one of us ... The guy’s just like us. ... Calvin Ridley out there doing seven-leg parlays just like us.” (17:10, Jonas)
NFL betting boom
“$30 billion—up 8.5%. I got news for you, 8.5% of $30 billion is a lot. But ... it’s still not legal in over 10 states in the country. It’s only going to get bigger.” (20:27, Jonas)
Fantasy football fraud
“He is the Bernie Madoff of fantasy football. What is going on?” (34:52, Jonas)
The tone throughout is lively and irreverent, packed with relatable analogies and Southern football war stories.
