Now, let's get this party started.
Colin Cowherd
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. It's our number two on a Thursday. Patriots, jets tonight that feels like batting practice. We'll see how that works out. By the way, I'm reading another story this morning. Aaron Rodgers under fire for Steelers downfall. Why you blaming Aaron? Pittsburgh's off defense has been unwatchable for like, seven years. He just stepped into their quicksand.
J. Mac
Yeah, but he's a Hall of Famer, Colin. He's supposed to solve the problems. I've seen this movie before. It was with the jets, and that's what we wanted Rogers to do, bail us out. And he couldn't do it. And that's why they got off him. So he's now your problem. Pittsburgh.
Colin Cowherd
Through nine games, he is tied. He has the most Steeler touchdown passes since Big Ben's last season. Through nine games, that tells you not about Aaron Rodgers. That tells you about the dysfunction of Pittsburgh. And Mike Tomlin does not seem to think it's a pressing issue here. Was Mike Tomlin this week talking about the clunker last week?
Greg Cosell
I'm not going to, you know, chalk it up to an off night, but there are no long term concerns. I'm just not going to allow your words to be my words. That's all you describe. Sunday night was what it was, but I have no long term reservations about his ability to play the position and play the position at a high level for us.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I just think in a wi fi world, they feel like a dial up. In a digital world, they feel analog. Remember, remember years and years ago, Apple discontinued 70% of its line because it wanted to concentrate like on the iPad and the iPhone. And they just discontinued 70% of their product. Projects, prospects, products, whatever. I feel like that's Pittsburgh. They should just get rid of about 70% of their defensive contracts and pivot to digital and their version of the iPhone. Like, I just think they've got expensive contracts. They're old on defense. I think they just have to make a complete cultural pivot to offense. Miami Dolphins did this a few years ago, from Brian Flores to Mike McDaniel. And it worked for about a year and a half, two years. But I don't think it's an Aaron Rodgers issue. I really don't. I think their offense is quicksand and he stepped in it and he's getting pulled down. That's how I see it. And with that, Greg Cosell, 46 years, NFL Films, is joining us. Well, you know, when, when you have the Chicago Bears history, you can't worry about what it looks like if you're winning. You just got to be really. You got to be really happy about it. So I thought last week, I thought it was. You saw some stuff with Caleb. Now, I've always defended him. He doesn't throw picks and he's really durable. And we're watching Jackson dart get hurt and Jane Daniels get hurt and panic, panics. Caleb doesn't get hurt. High school, college pro. And he does not throw picks. Now he holds the ball too long. But I'm going to guess that when you looked at the film of this week, there, there were probably some things that looked like growth because it felt like it on television. I felt like I was seeing growth. Did the film say that?
Greg Cosell
Well, he's uneven every week to a certain extent. There's always plays where I know that when Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams get together the next day and go over the film that Ben Johnson's going to point out a lot of things, but he makes three to five plays every game that are truly wow plays. And he makes some incredible throws. You know, now it's really funny in this game because that winning touchdown that he ran for a touchdown, which I believe we're looking at right now, was really a really poor decision that ended up with a great result because the ball should have been thrown to Cole Komet. That was the design of the play and he was wide open. And why Caleb didn't throw it, I can't answer that. But the point is, the result turned out to be a touchdown. But he made a throw earlier in the fourth quarter to Burden on the outside. That was a wow throw. He makes a couple of those every game. We've seen the throws he makes on the run. Boy, does he throw the ball well on the run. But then there's also a lot of plays where it's just too random, where he just doesn't really have a feel for the pocket versus the route concept. So he's very, very talented, which I think we all knew. I don't think that's a bold, controversial statement that he's really talented. I'm not giving you a scoop, Colin, but I think he's uneven in every game. It's just last week they came back and won in the fourth quarter. Then they were down, what, 14 with five and a half, six minutes to go. So that had a very dramatic feel to it. But every game is a little uneven.
Colin Cowherd
I want to talk about Buffalo. I mean, every. Even great. Even great teams have awful weeks. Some Buffalo players said it was 90 degrees in Miami. It was a lot. We don't practice in it. We don't plan it. I think I worry more about the offense. I thought they should have made a move at the trade deadline to get a perimeter guy. Do you see going ahead? Are you worried about Buffalo's offense?
Greg Cosell
I am. And for this reason I've been worried about it for quite a while. And I've talked about it with my guys, you know, at the office here. I think that their pass game, in terms of concepts, combinations is very limited. And I think that what starts to happen and you're dealing with a quarterback that by his very nature at times will leave throws on the field because he moves so well and can make so many plays off movement. So right now he's not really trusting the process the way quarterbacks need to. Now maybe he's not comfortable with the process. Maybe he's not comfortable with his receivers. But, you know, everybody talks about the fact, Colin, that they don't have a big time number one. And that's true. But on a certain level, there's a bit of a cop out element to that, because when you don't have that guy that then it's incumbent upon the offensive coordinator to create schematically ways for the quarterback to have throws that are defined. You can do that against man, you can do that against zone. You can do that. And they don't really do much of that at all. I mean, I see almost every team in the league, so I see all these other teams and what they do. And when you combine that with the fact that Josh Allen at times is going to leave the pocket prematurely and leave some throws on the field, you can have times where it just doesn't look very good.
Colin Cowherd
All right, Detroit is at Philly this weekend, and what I really want to talk about isn't the struggling Philly offense. It's about Jay. It's about Jalen Phillips.
Greg Cosell
Right.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, I thought. I mean, in that game where you had a mic and a Jalen Phillips, I thought he was so instrumental. Immediately tell me your thoughts on Jalen Phillips and what he adds to that defense because he just jumped through the tv.
Greg Cosell
Yeah, well, it's funny, I went back and looked at my evaluation of him coming out of the University of Miami in 2021, and I thought he was the best defensive end coming out in that draft. I thought he checked every single box. I mean, he's six five, he's 265. He can do everything. And I think in a Vic Fangio defense, because Vic Fangio predominantly wants to rush four, he does not want to blitz a lot. That's not the way he wants to play. Now, every coordinator will blitz if they can't get any pressure on. On the quarterback, because you have to speed up the quarterback one way or the other. But I think when you're dealing with Jalen Phillips, you're dealing with a guy now that gives them a true edge. Defensive end, you can even bring him inside at times if you choose to. And he is a dominant force. And you saw that in the game against the Packers. But, you know, I think we just need to say one thing about this Philly offense. I'm sure you watched the game. I watched it on tape, obviously in detail. And I was very, very surprised and kind of befuddled a little bit because I felt when I finished watching the tape, I felt like they played that game to minimize the impact that Jalen Hurts was going to have on the game. And I thought there was one play that really stood out to me. It was late in the third quarter in a scoreless game. Collin, it was third and 12 on the plus 26 yard line going in and they handed the ball off to Will Shipley. They're giving up. That's a give up play to get a field goal in a scoreless game when Jalen Hurts is your quarterback. I just felt that that game and I don't know the reason why, but they played that game to minimize Hertz's impact on the game. And that really surprised me.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. After the buy last year, you remember they started taking throws away from Jalen Hurts. Nobody knows, nobody knows a quarterback more than the team that drafted a quarterback and they're telling you what they think.
Greg Cosell
Yeah, I mean that, that's. It'll be interesting to see because my guess is Sunday night against the Lions, we're not going to be looking at a 10, 7 game. That would be my guess.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. All right. Seahawks, Rams. One of the things that. One of the things that's fascinating about McVeigh is if Devonte Adams is banged up and he's supposed to play, he'll go to three tight ends. He's always done that. He. He reinvents himself. It feels like any week. What do you make of what you've seen from the Rams offense, which is so efficient, no penalties. Stafford's an mvp. What do you make of it on film?
Greg Cosell
I don't think enough is being talked about regarding what they've done. I mean, three weeks ago they went to three tight ends really as the foundation of what they do. They've had 40% basically, or more three tight ends in the last three games. And keep in mind, in the first five games of this season, they didn't have one snap with three tight ends last year. In 2024, they had three snaps with three tight ends all year. So to dramatically make this kind of shift, Colin, in the middle of a season is truly remarkable. You don't see that kind of dramatic change hardly ever in the National Football League, particularly in an offense. And it's been really effective in the last three games. Okay. Just the last three games where they've done this. Stafford has thrown eight touchdown passes. When there have been three tight ends on the field in the last three games. That's truly remarkable.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, it's Seattle's a handful. Both these rosters are loaded. Do you think the Rams match up with Seattle's aggressive defense.
Greg Cosell
Yeah, you're dealing with the two defenses that stunt the most of any team in the league. They don't necessarily blitz a high percentage, but they're very aggressive with their multiple stunt concepts. And they've got a lot of defensive linemen up front who are very good at that, whether they're penetrating traders where they're loopers and that's how they generate pressure and they're very aggressive. And I think an overlooked player is the rookie for Seattle, Nick Immanwari, who's being used by Mike McDonald kind of the way he used Kyle Hamilton in Baltimore. 6.3.5, 642 20. Eminwari can pretty much do anything. They're using him as a second level defender who basically can play the slot, he can play in the box, he can be an overhang defender, he can match up to tight ends. So it's been a really interesting sort of transition now that Emin Warrior is healthy. But this Seattle defense has been really, really good. And they play nickel because of Edmond Warri more than any team in the league.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, so Denver hosts Kansas City. Is Denver's defense, which if they didn't have it, they wouldn't be winning these games. Is it personnel, is it scheme? What jumps off the tape?
Greg Cosell
It's both because Vance Joseph is very good with his blitz concepts, but because of the personnel on their front, they can do what we call gap you out, meaning that they can create one on ones with their defensive front and they can win one on ones. Not, you know, people think of Benito, they think of Cooper on the edge, but Zach Allen, Franklin Myers inside, they can win one on one. So very often they line up in five or six man fronts. They which dictates what we call 5o protection, meaning that the offensive line matches up one on one because they have someone in front of them. It's five or six, you know, players on the first level. So they gap you out, they make you block them one on one and they can win those one on one matchups. And again for the second year in a row, they're leading the NFL in sacks. And this year they're leading by a wide, wide margin.
Colin Cowherd
Does Kansas City match up with Denver? Does Kansas City's offense match up man on man blocking them?
Greg Cosell
It'll be interesting because we know Joanne Taylor at right tackle has struggled pretty much for the last number of years. He'll face mostly Jonathan Cooper. I don't know if Josh Simmons is back this week or not playing left tackle, but either way, Nick Benito is a handful so at some point, this might have to be one of those Mahomes games where he moves around and makes plays, which of course he's very capable of doing. But they're very quick, they're very strong, the Broncos, with their front, they. And they'll cause. They pretty much cause problems for everybody.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, so in the game in Berlin that first half, I thought the Colts and Daniel Jones dominated, but Daniel Jones, the last two weeks has started looking like old Daniel Jones with ball security issues. So what? He's obviously the best he's ever been. Are you worried a little bit on the fumble stuff? What's the film say?
Greg Cosell
Yeah, the fumbling is something he has to clean up. The other stuff I'm not really worried about. It's the fumbling that you cannot do. But you know, keep in mind, and I'm not sure a lot of people are aware of this, we think of Jonathan Taylor and he's obviously a great back. But the Colts have the most first down pass attempts of any team in the league. So this is not just let's hand the ball to Jonathan Taylor. Now he has a lot of first down rushes as well. He might be at the top of the league in that, but they throw the ball a lot on first down and that is absolutely the best down to throw. So I'm not worried about Jones throwing the ball as a passer, but the, the fumbles have to be cleaned up. You just, I mean, I'm not saying anything a coach wouldn't say, but you just can't do that. But you know, I think he's seeing the field well. Even in the Pittsburgh game two weeks ago where they lost, he made some big time throws. And you know, when I talk about seeing the field, we can basically go to the, to the play from last week because I think this is a really good example of how they sort of match up and how he makes throws. So let's go to the touchdown he threw to Pierce from last week's game overseas. And we can see exactly what I'm talking about. So this, this is the touchdown he threw to Pierce, which was, I believe, their second touchdown of the game. And it's, it's a really interesting play because it's almost the kind of play that makes you think they knew what they were going to get. Defensively here you see Jones, he's basically in an empty formation. There's no one in the backfield with him. And what you're going to get here is three receivers to the wide side of the field. Now Notice they're kind of in a bunch. Look, okay, Warren is the point man in the bunch and Pierce is outside. And they're tight to the formation. They're reduced. So they get what we call cover four quarters, okay? And I said, I think they almost anticipated this. And you can see what quarters is, is you get the corner responsible for his deep quarter and the safety responsible on that side of the field for his quarter. So what they're going to do is they're going to attack that and they're going to take Warren, who I said is the point man, and he's going to run vertically before he bends inside so that safety has to match him, because what quarters essentially is, is man to man with rules. And then Pierce is going to run the deep post and you're going to get the. The corner now matching him. But because of the reduced split, the corner is playing with width and depth. And that's really important in quarters because that's going to impact why this works. So what you're going to see here is the safety has eyes on Warren as he has to, because that becomes his man responsibility on a vertical stem. And you see he's going to bend it, but he's releasing vertically right at the safety. Then you're going to get the corner. Now you, he's on Pierce, but he's outside of him and he's playing with width and depth, as I said, because of the reduced split. So now what you're going to get is you're going to see that the safety, once he realizes that the ball is going to not go to Warren, he's going to try to turn in, he's turned inside. So he's not really a factor on this throw. Even though it looks that way, by the end of the play, he's not really a factor. So what you're going to get now is you're going to get. And you see the body position there of the safety, he's not going to be a factor at all. And Jones knows that because this is really what we call a quarters beater route concept. And then you're going to get Pierce to the post with the corner playing outside of him, and he's not going to be able to play this. It's very hard to play the post from an outside leverage position. So Jones throws to absolutely the right guy here. Pierce goes up and get it and gets it. A lot of people might look at this and think, oh, he threw into double coverage. He did not throw into double coverage. This is exactly what you want, when you have quarters coverage, you want an outside post and the inside attacking the safety. So this was really well designed. Again, made me think they were anticipating the coverage. But Jones, Colin, is still playing at a really high level.
Colin Cowherd
By the way. Let me just throw this out there. We were talking about this earlier is that we've watched Darnold and Baker be reborn and take team friendly deals. I've been watching Mac Jones without Pearsall and without Iuk, doesn't have his top two guys. And I'm not disputing how valuable Kittle, Christian McCaffrey and Shanahan are. But what is when you look at Mac Jones, my take is I think he's the next Donald and Baker that you could get a very team friendly deal. I think he throws a good ball. I don't think he's nearly as athletic as Darnold. Does the film say he's an NFL starter?
Greg Cosell
Cause his numbers say that in a specific system. I mean, I think he's in the perfect system. It has to be choreographed. I don't think he works for everybody. Keep one thing in mind. Now granted, they don't have a vertical dimension in their offense. There's no question about that. But he's not necessarily a vertical guy. He's a timing and rhythm player. I think if you sign him and I think he can start in the league. Colin. But I think the system, it has to be a very good marriage between system and quarterback. He's nowhere near as talented as Darnold. He's not as talented a passer as Baker. So he has to be the correct fit. He will not work for everybody.
Colin Cowherd
J. Mack loves hearing that. He's a Brock Purdy guy.
Greg Cosell
Well, Purdy's more. Purdy's more talented. Purdy's more talented.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, look at the J. Mac. Oh my God. Perks up. Greg Cosell. I appreciate it. Okay, so he said Brock Purdy's more talented. J. Mac. But it should be noted, availability does matter. So it'd be nice if I get, you know, Purdy would be available.
J. Mac
But you know, I'm glad that when I say Purdy's more talented, you scoff. But Mr. NFL Films says Purdy's more talented. Oh, wait a minute. Do J. Yeah, listen, we know this. Okay? Can we get Kyle Shanahan on the show? Colin, can we try? Can we talk to Dave and make that happen? Like I think Shanahan would tell you Brock Purdy is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league.
Colin Cowherd
He's not going to tell you that.
J. Mac
On air processing wise, I mean Brock Purdy is lights out his story. How can you not love his story? You're practically an underdog from the sticks in in in in the northwest and becoming a radio juggernaut. I mean that's Brock Purdy story. Dead last pick in the draft.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I don't. I. Stories are not what wins games.
J. Mac
He was within seconds of winning a Super bowl of his defense could get a stop. He led Mahomes in overtime in the Super Bowl. The defense can't get a stop. What do you want from the guy?
Colin Cowherd
Well, so was Rex Grossman. You know that. A lot of people get the Bears quarterback.
J. Mac
Stop it.
Colin Cowherd
A lot of people get close to that ring. Jimmy Garoppolo was a play away from that ring.
Greg Cosell
No, no.
J. Mac
In overtime Brock Purdy drove them down the field for a field goal to take the lead against the Chiefs.

Iowa. Iowa. I'm gonna take USC like 28, 27. Yeah. If I could Include a college pick in my blazing five. I would take Iowa plus the points in wet, soggy L A. USC wins though.
J. Mac
They will win the game.
Colin Cowherd
I think they will as well.
J. Mac
I think they're gonna give Oregon more of a game than people think. I'm just gonna put that on record.
Colin Cowherd
I think it depends on Oregon's health. Oregon has been beat up. All their skill players beat up. If they are, they've got a shot because Oregon's a big play offense and USC is very susceptible to giving up the big play. Whereas USC can be a big play offense. But Oregon doesn't give up big play. So when you go on the. When you go on the road and you're susceptible to big plays, Oregon usually lands a few of those punches. That's what would worry me.
J. Mac
A Texas, Georgia pick.
Colin Cowherd
By the way, I like Georgia. I like Bama to beat Oklahoma.
J. Mac
Yeah, I don't know why people like Oklahoma and that one. I'm. I think Alabama wins that one and I think they cover as well.
Colin Cowherd
J Mac with the news.
Greg Cosell
No, no, no, no.
Colin Cowherd
Turn on the news.
J. Mac
This is the Herd line news. Let's start things off with Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen. Did you know they are buddies? This will be the third time they've matched up since being selected in the 2018 draft. They got a good relationship off the field and have let the jokes fly head to head this weekend.
Colin Cowherd
I have to walkie talkie to him because he's so damn tall.
Greg Cosell
So I can't really have a face.
Colin Cowherd
To face conversation with him. But you know, in Buffalo it's cold, it's rainy. Even though he's 6 10, his hands are small, so he better wear his gloves. Baker wears two gloves golfing, so he's.
Greg Cosell
That type of guy.
Colin Cowherd
I love the guy. He's awesome. You know, kind of how his career has progressed and the adversity he's fought through and playing some really, really dang good football right now. By the way, I've never known anybody that plays golf with two gloves.
J. Mac
I've never heard that. I did hear from my golfing buddies out here in la. That Josh Allen, you know, he bought a place out here. He joined a very famous golf club. I'm not a part of it, but I hear Josh Allen's a really good golfer now. I don't know, is this two gloves thing. That's a. That's a thing in golf. Do we have any staffers who are playing?
Colin Cowherd
By the way, I am playing the day after Thanksgiving. Not in Chicago, in a cold weather Location.
Greg Cosell
Yeah. Whoa.
J. Mac
You just a busybody, huh? They just told me some information about you this weekend. You got some stuff cooking there in the, in the Windy City.
Colin Cowherd
I do.
J. Mac
I like it. I'm happy for you, big guy. All right, let's move on to the next story. And just because, you know, you like Chicago, we're going to talk more. Ben Johnson and the Bears. Caleb Williams. Colin, I know you're very excited about his development. You keep leading the show with him, much to the chagrin of the audience. However, Ben Johnson is talking about watching Caleb evade defenders. He's great with his legs.
Greg Cosell
I'm thinking I'm the best coach in America. Play call, wasn't it? No, I think that's, that's the, that's.
Colin Cowherd
The beauty behind what we have going.
Greg Cosell
Right now is, you know, as a coaching staff, we try to. We try to get that primary receiver open as much as we can. And sometimes the defense doesn't cooperate with you. And so Caleb knows that if we can't get one to two or if, you know, he's feeling the pressure, that.
Colin Cowherd
He can still make us right, and we can still have a good play.
Greg Cosell
So I think that's a cool thing.
Colin Cowherd
About where we're at right now. Think about this if you're a Bears fan. Dan Campbell just took over play calling duties with his offense and they're going to Philadelphia. Not great for Detroit. Green Bay is lost offensively and Minnesota doesn't really know a year from now who the quarterback is a year from now. Can you say Chicago Bears, NFC north champion?
J. Mac
Let's slow your roll, my friend. However, I will note you said their year, their quarterback, a year from now. J.J. mcCarthy dealing with a hand bruise. This is breaking right now. Limited at practice, took no throws during the open portion. Okay. I had to look up their backup quarterback now because Carson Wentz is cooked. It's a gentleman by the name of Max Brosmer. Highly touted rookie, but he is a rookie, so that's not great. However, let's go back to Caleb real quick. So you obviously love Caleb. One thing I noticed was he was on that final drive against the Giants. Colin, he wasn't throwing as much as he was. Just like, I'm going to tuck and run. We know that's not sustainable, but we did drill down on his numbers passing outside the pocket, and what we found is not particularly great. When he's evading pressure and running outside the pocket, it's completing 43% of his passes. Colin, that's not great. And it's all dink and dunk. Let me quickly get rid of it. Look at the passer rating. Cut in half outside the pocket. So it's again, he's a work in progress. He's certainly not polished. He's certainly not Brock Purdy. There's some encouraging signs, but. Colin, does this concern you at all that Caleb on the run not as effective?
Colin Cowherd
Well, I think. I think what Greg Cosell said is exactly what I see. And what you see about five times a game, you're like jaw dropping. Wow. But it's uneven. He's running when he should pass. It's just not quite right. But I've defended quarterbacks for years, including Bo Nix. Your first two to three years in the league that if you're an athlete, until you really figure out NFL defenses, use your feet to move the chains. I've said it with Bo Nix. I think Bo Nicks should run more when he struggles. I said it with Lamar early, dude, pick up first downs. You're going to develop in the pocket over time. So I again, these guys have played nine games together. I think it's fine. I think when you have the ability to pick up first downs running, do it. Because I don't think any of these guys, including Mahomes. Mahomes admitted year three, everything slowed down. Mahomes pretty sharp guy. Year three. Brady admits year four, year five, okay, now I've seen everything. So in that process, Jared Goff doesn't have that advantage. He had to just learn he needed great protection. So I'm going to defend guys running to move the chains, be it Jackson dart, Bo Nix or Caleb.
J. Mac
So the problem is a bunch of those guys keep getting hurt. Jackson dart keeps getting hurt. Okay. And quickly, Baker Mayfield, Colin, one of the craziest stats I saw. So all the beginning of the season, he was elusive in the pocket, scrambled. Remember against the Texans, killed me. Against the Niners, he had that memorable run. How's this, Colin? The last three games, Baker Mayfield has not scrambled once. Has not run once. Is it because he got injured in one of the games and he's not talking about it? There's a reference to an oblique injury. When you leave the pocket, you're susceptible to getting drilled by linebackers and safeties because they're headhunting. I would be careful. If Caleb's running six, seven times a game, I think they're probably losing or he's getting hurt. Would you agree?
Colin Cowherd
Well, they're winning this weekend. Again, this is one of these games. The Vikings are the favorite and they're desperate. I don't. Well, I.
J. Mac
Their season's over. If they lose this game, they're not getting to the playoffs.
Colin Cowherd
And J.J. mcCarthy now is not practicing. How do I not like the Bears?
J. Mac
Technically, he's at practice. He's just not throwing with the media there, which is maybe worse.
Colin Cowherd
Well, if I. If I was at Fox but wasn't talking, I wouldn't be hosting my show. At some point you've got to. If you're not practicing. I don't know. It's like sometimes you need breaks in a season. If JJ is not practicing, a young guy that needs to practice, that's a break for the Bears.
J. Mac
Yeah. Final story. Let's go to Austin Reeves. Unbelievable. Colin. He is top seven in the NBA in scoring an assist this season. Just unbelievable. He's a great talent. Here he is last night against okc. Look at him attacking Hartenstein. Yeah. Should have got the foul call there anyways. You know, I'm very pro.
Greg Cosell
Reeves.
J. Mac
How about this? There are reports out there that the Lakers have turned down, wait for it, 20 offers in the last year for Austin Reaves and that the report goes on to say Pelinka is only interested in dealing Reeves in a package for Giannis or Jokic.
Colin Cowherd
Well, it's Polinka's guy, so he's very loyal to Austin Reeves.
J. Mac
I mean, I did laugh when I first heard that. Well, no, it's like I, I said.
Colin Cowherd
Before, I would have. I. If. When you, when Dallas traded Luca. If you'd have given me AD Austin Reeves in a first round pick.
J. Mac
Lakers lose that deal.
Greg Cosell
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Then it's a really interesting deal. Austin's a good player. I think he's a three. I think he's like Derek White. You can win a championship if he's your three or your four. I don't think you're winning a championship if Austin's your one or your two.
J. Mac
Austin RE is much better than Derrick White. Please put some respect on his name.
Colin Cowherd
First of all, Derrick White's an elite defender and an elite three point shooter.
J. Mac
Derek White, when he's got a stacked deck with Tatum and Brown and company. Now what is Derrick White?
Colin Cowherd
He's a really good player.
J. Mac
Well, Austin Reeves is the number two option on a Lakers team that was eight and three before the game last night. So like, ah, let's not. You seem irrationally down on Reeves, Colin.
Colin Cowherd
I'm not. I just think he's a three. I don't think he's a one or a two. That Minnesota series they picked on him.
J. Mac
They did he. Live and learn, buddy.
Colin Cowherd
You're not picking on one and twos.
J. Mac
Well, Anthony Edwards picking on you is different. For the record, Reeves was asked about his upcoming free agency. You tell me if this sounds like a hometown discount. I want to be in L. A. I love it. Even though the extension was turned down. It doesn't mean that I'm out here trying to get a bleeping gigantic number. I want to be here. I want to win.
Colin Cowherd
I like it.
J. Mac
So Reeves, I think you can get him for not paying him the max. And then you can get another quasi star, not an Anthony Davis, because they're not doing that. But you can find a number three next year once LeBron's gone.
Colin Cowherd
Listen, I think Austin Reaves obviously has value because you just reported that 20 offers have come down the table. Denver is never trading Jokic. Milwaukee is reticent, reluctant to trade Giannis, though I would have a year ago. Yeah, so it's easy to say I'll only trade him for those two. You're not getting those two.
J. Mac
So, by the way, the NBA All Star Game is now like the world against the US Austin Reeves is going to be an All Star this year for sure because he's one of the, what, 15 best US players in the NBA. I would argue he's probably one of the six best American players in the in the NBA. Austin Reeves is again 28 and eight so far this season. He had a bad off night last night. Whatever.
Colin Cowherd
One of the six best American players in the NBA.
J. Mac
Do we want to do this?
Colin Cowherd
No, I don't, actually. I don't want to waste the audience's time on that. I really don't want to do it.
J. Mac
Middle America loves hillbilly Kobe, as they call him.
Colin Cowherd

One thing we have found since we started back in 2022 is the information on the suspicious deaths has become much harder to find. Live from the heart of Chicago, rumors are Colin Cowherd will make an appearance. Then it's Michigan, Northwestern, Big noon Saturday only on Fox.
Colin Cowherd
Things are humming. Cubs made the playoffs. Bears, I'm telling you right now. Minnesota struggling J.J. mcCarthy's not practicing today. Detroit offensive coordinator basically Dan Campbell stepped in and took over the play calling duties. Not good. And Green Bay's lost. So it's the Caleb Ben thing. It's, it's a work in progress. It's fascinating but I'll say this. I've defended Bo Nix on this and I'll defend Caleb. When you're a young quarterback, if you're winning, it's kind of all I care about. As long as you're not getting in the way of winning. Bo Nix has been great in fourth quarters and Caleb Williams has been really great in fourth quarters. That's. And they're both durable. You give me durability. You're great late. I worry when you're great on script and stink. Remember the first couple weeks Caleb was good on script, wasn't after that worries me. Bo Nix isn't very good on script. Caleb's fine. They're actually later in games when you got to make plays. They use their athleticism, have a sense of urgency. They're both good. Here's co sell on Caleb what he sees.
Greg Cosell
There's always plays where I know that when Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams get together the next day and go over the film that Ben Johnson's going to point out a lot of things. But he makes three to five plays every game that are truly wow plays. And he makes some incredible throws.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Put up the NFL schedule this week. It's a very, very good weekend for games and I don't think you can underscore this. Detroit's at Philly. That could be a loss if. If Chicago beats Minnesota. Boy, this, this gets really interesting because that Detroit outdoors at Philly, that feels like an L. That Philadelphia is one of my favorite picks of the weekend. So keep your eye. This is a big moment for New York and sometime for. For Chicago and sometimes you need breaks. And my feeling is if JJ McCarthy is not going to play and you don't really know what you're doing at quarterback, that may be the break. The other thing we talked about, JMAC brought this up. It's a huge weekend for the Chargers because if the Chargers beat Jacksonville and Denver topples Kansas City at home. Kansas City is not winning that division. That means they're going to have to go on the road. No arrowhead. So the Bears and the Chargers are in really good spots. They control their destiny this weekend. Any game. J Mac that jumps out to you on this board.
J. Mac
So this the big numbers guy, he comes on my podcast. Aaron Shatz, I don't know if you know him. If the Chargers beat the jags, they are 91% making the playoffs based on future schedule. If they lose, it drops to 58%, essentially a coin flip. The Jaguars, if they lose this game, only a 19% chance at the playoffs. So that opens the door for someone to sneak in a wild card spot. Could it be Pittsburgh when they get passed by the Ravens? There are some huge swing games this weekend. I actually think if you look at Minnesota schedule, I don't know if we can call that up, Colin. This is must win for them or their season is over. The Vikings schedule is just brutal down the stretch and you like to say they don't even have a quarterback. So I don't see a path to the playoffs for them. I think the Bears obviously have a much better shot, but Minnesota's schedule is just too difficult to get in the playoffs. And I saw my guy Van Grinkle's not practicing, he's hurt all season and he's a game changer off the edge.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, this is, this, this is a real moment for Harbaugh, Herbert and the Chargers, Caleb, Ben and the Bears. There's a real moment and if you're going to be a playoff team, these are the games you have to win. It's not a big ask can you beat JJ McCarthy or can you beat the Jags who really have no home field advantage? So if the playoff picture today, and I think the NFC playoff picture is mostly what it's going to look like right now, the playoff picture in the nfc, Philadelphia, Seattle, Detroit, Tampa, Rams, Bears, Green Bay, San Francisco on the way out. I that's kind of, I think that kind of looks like if the Bears win this weekend, that kind of looks like it's one of the now AFC is different. It's Colts, Denver, New England, Pittsburgh, Chargers, Buffalo, Jacksonville. I think Baltimore wins their division. Pittsburgh gets bumped out. No wild card from that division. And I think Kansas City gets in if they win this weekend. If not, all bets are off.
J. Mac
So team to watch. Houston Texans. I know they've been garbage and they've killed me at the gambling window. Davis Mills in line to start this week. They're against Tennessee. Colin, maybe they're the team that bypasses the Jags because again, that defense is pretty nasty. Stingley, Will, Anderson, Hunter, they're formidable. I do wonder if they could play spoiler if Mills can get the win this weekend. And then Stroud comes back from the concussion. Perhaps with your guy, Woody Marks, really he's look sharp in the backfield. I don't know how closely you're watching the Texans, but they are a dangerous maybe they sneak in.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah no I I Texan schedule is brutal. I I you don't, you don't want to go there with the Texans. Their schedule is Bills at The Colts at the Chiefs? Forget it.
J. Mac
Well, that Chiefs game swing, I'm, I'm on island here. I still don't think the Chiefs are a lock for the playoffs. I'll kind of look like a fool, which, hey, it happens to all of us. You know, they sneak in. But yeah, I think I'm gonna take the Broncos. I'm taking the points. Colin.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, this is one of the best weekends in a while. Bears, Vikings means a ton. I think Tampa and Buffalo. Buffalo has to win that game. I think they will. Chargers, Jags, lot riding on it. Seattle, Rams game of the year. I'm going to, I'll tell you. Potential upset. Keep your eye on the Cleveland Browns hosting Baltimore Ravens. Third straight roadie. It's going to be cold. The defense by the Browns at home is not only the best in the league, it's the best by a long shot. Cleveland at home. Go look at the Cleveland Browns depth chart. Their defense has dudes everywhere. They really, they've drafted pretty well on the defensive side. They just got to find a quarterback. Kansas City, Denver's massive. Detroit, Philly massive. There are like six, six huge swing games this weekend. Hour three next.

Podcast: The Herd with Colin Cowherd
Main Guests: Greg Cosell (NFL Films), J. Mac (Jason McIntyre)
Main Theme: In-depth NFL discussion—focus on Mac Jones, Caleb Williams’ development, Seahawks-Rams preview, and broader league insights.
Hour 2 of “The Herd” dives into the performance and development of key NFL quarterbacks (Mac Jones, Caleb Williams), evaluates crucial upcoming matchups (notably Seahawks-Rams), and features Greg Cosell’s detailed film study analysis. The show maintains its signature tone—opinionated, analytical, but conversationally accessible—with quick pivots between big-picture franchise discussions and granular play-by-play breakdowns.
“In a wi-fi world, they feel like a dial-up. In a digital world, they feel analog.” (05:32)
“He makes three to five plays every game that are truly wow plays...but then there’s also a lot of plays where it’s just too random.”
“He’s very, very talented…but he’s uneven in every game.”
“Passing outside the pocket, it’s completing 43%. …It’s all dink and dunk. …Passer rating cut in half outside the pocket.”
“Their pass game…is very limited. …When you don’t have a big time number one, it’s incumbent on the offensive coordinator to create schematically.”
“You’re dealing with a guy now that gives them a true edge…a dominant force.” (11:03 – Greg Cosell)
“They played that game to minimize Hertz’s impact, and that really surprised me.” (12:38)
“Dramatic shift…to three tight ends as the foundation—you don’t see that kind of change hardly ever in the NFL.” (13:26) “Stafford has thrown eight TD passes with three tight ends on the field in the last three games.”
“Nick Emmanwori…being used the way Mike McDonald used Kyle Hamilton. …Can pretty much do anything.” (14:28)
“They can create one-on-ones and win them…Again, for the second year in a row, leading the NFL in sacks.” (15:35)
“Most first down pass attempts in the league…absolutely the best down to throw.” (17:30)
“He’s in a perfect system. …He’s nowhere near as talented as Darnold. …Not as talented a passer as Baker. …He has to be the correct fit.”
“Purdy’s more talented.” (22:48)
“Can you say Chicago Bears, NFC North champions?”
“He’s a three. I don’t think you’re winning a championship if Austin’s your one or your two.” (39:37)
“If Chicago beats Minnesota and Detroit loses at Philly, this gets really interesting.” (49:08)
“Keep your eye on the Cleveland Browns hosting Baltimore Ravens…The defense by the Browns at home is not only the best in the league, it’s the best by a long shot.” (53:17)
“In a wi-fi world, they feel like a dial-up…They have to make a complete cultural pivot to offense.”
