Matt Hasselbeck is around the corner. Dion Dawkins today. Tonight's Bears Vikings. We're going to get into that last hour. I like Minnesota tonight. Without further ado, we do it every week at this time. Colin right? Colin wrong.
Dion Dawkins
Where Colin was right.
Colin Cowherd
Well, the Kansas City Chiefs regression is clear. I had said last week I'd, I'd probably take the Chargers. The O line issues the run game. Where is it? The wide receiver core was thin going into the game. They couldn't get out of their own way. Literally. They're the only winless team in their division. I thought Mahomes was amazing but when you watch the Ravens or the packers or the Eagles roster, it's thin. And I said you can't keep winning every one score game even if you have Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert against Steve Spagnola did whatever he wanted to with kind of a meh mid receiving core.
Dion Dawkins
Where Colin was wrong.
Colin Cowherd
Listen, he's a statue at this point and got sacked four times. But I thought Aaron Rodgers was really strong in the opener. To his credit he has said I am here for leadership and distribution and elevating others. So he knows what he is. 7 of 9 in the fourth quarter with a couple of touchdowns and he took shots. He took a shot. Joe Burrow and him took shots this weekend. Seven of nine, two touchdowns. And again, I don't love Pittsburgh's offensive line. They don't, they don't run the ball consistently. So I thought Aaron on the road against Aaron Glenn's defense.
Dion Dawkins
I thought it was impressive where Colin was right.
Colin Cowherd
I said it after the hall of Fame game. Detroit does not look right. You can't replace two elite coordinators with in house guys and think it'll just be the same. It's not the same 2.1 yards per carry. They're rebuilding the interior O line. Ben Johnson was the sharpest coordinator in the game for a couple of years. You can't just go well we got a guy in house that can replace him. You can't do that. Their passing game coordinator left of the jets and Justin Fields looked pretty good. So I, I, I, I think you can take some things even in the preseason the Lions will not be as.
Dion Dawkins
Well coached a football team where Colin was wrong.
Colin Cowherd
The Dallas Cowboys lost, but I thought Brian Schottenheimer had them buttoned up. I thought they were good situationally into the first Half clock management. They had very few penalties. I thought they played even keel football with good emotion. Not wild emotion, Dak. Terrific. They found run lanes. They were a drop pass by CD Lamb from winning this football game in Philadelphia. The clock management was strong. They didn't have penalties. I had my issues with Brian Schottenheimer. There's no way you could come out of that game whether you love the Cowboys or hate them and no, not be impressed.
Dion Dawkins
I was wrong where Colin was right.
Colin Cowherd
Well, college football's bumpy for Bill Belichick. He won't let the Patriots scout on scouts on the Carolina campus, which doesn't make sense. You're only hurting the players. He just keeps alienating himself from the NFL. Bill, Bill's old school. He's very provincial. It's about loyalty to Bill. And you know, if you're not loyal to me, you're a bad guy. You're against us. That must be exhausting to have that personality. But I, but I said coming into college, he's not a great drafter of college kids. Why is he going to be a great recruiter of high school kids? He watches even less of that. So I was surprised they lost the way they did. But I'm not surprised he's having struggles.
Dion Dawkins
Where Colin was wrong.
Colin Cowherd
What a dud by New England. Geno Smith was spinning it the my Mike Frable's offense and Josh McDaniels. It was cautious, it was slow, it was deliberate. Now I will say with all the free agents and all the rookies playing, they've got a whole new cast on this roster. So they got so many new pieces and starters don't play a lot in the preseason. I do think this will be about as bad as they play. But Drake may cautious, not a lot of juice. I was surprised how bad, how poor.
Dion Dawkins
How slow that looked where Colin was right.
Colin Cowherd
Well, Miami Dolphins are cooked. I said two years ago, Mike McDaniel's clever. He can be funny. I think he's a great offensive mind. But is he a leader of men now? The Colts are better than people think. Colts have a good roster, but that, that you can't have that you can't have Daniel Jones going 7, 4, 7 on drives that defense did not come to play. After the game, there were some concerning quotes from defensive players. Head coach is a CEO. It's not just a play caller. I don't doubt Mike McDaniel is a great play caller and will get a great OC job, but I also don't love the roster. When you watch Those two teams play Colts had way more good players and it wasn't particularly close.
Dion Dawkins
Where Colin was right.
Colin Cowherd
I said, keep your eye on Tampa. Rookie receiver Emeka Ebuka, two touchdowns, great route runner. He has a chance to be the rookie of the year. Every scout, every executive in the league I talked to, if I said, who will surprise people in the first round, it was the Ohio State receiver. He got overshadowed because Ohio State is wide receiver, university and they have so many amazing stars. This kid, you are looking at a guy if he stays healthy. I mean, he's a pro. Route running, hands, discipline, personality, Emeka Buka. I mean, Baker Mayfield has himself today as a rookie. Game one a star. Where Colin was right. Where Colin was wrong. Well, he engineered six playoff appearances with the Seahawks. Matt Hasselbeck, 18 years, is now joining us live.
Matt Hasselbeck
Yeah, you could add, my favorite part of this show is where Colin was right. Where Colin was wrong. I love it. I love, I love when you double down when you were right. And I kind of like when you admit when you were wrong. It's. It's fun. I enjoy it.
Colin Cowherd
Well, thank you. And I was wrong plenty. I'm going to get. Let's just get to last night. And I said before, when Baltimore wins, if I didn't see the game, I would suspect Lamar played great. But when Buffalo wins a wild game, I would suspect Josh Allen had to be otherworldly because I think the Ravens have a better roster and more routes to win. I think they're so dependent on Josh Allen. But as somebody who got a team to a Super bowl, when you watch him doing what he does, how do you explain Josh Allen if I'd never seen him play.
Matt Hasselbeck
Awesome. I mean, that game was incredible. Listen, I was watching it last night. I'm like, I met. Wow, this is an impressive win by Baltimore. It's amazing. But then in the back of my head, I'm like, this means that Josh Allen can just go, cut it loose, put a cape on and just play Superman. And that's really what he did. I. I mean, like, it was just. It was absolutely incredible. And, you know, it's so boring to say, like, oh, turnovers, third down, fourth down, conversion. But, like, that was the story of the game. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if we see another epic matchup against these two teams. And this is what I would say. Like, you know, a lot of people were talking about the fact that, well, this, this might come down to a home field advantage thing in the playoffs at some point. I think there's Some guys that are just built different. Josh Allen's built different. Lamar Jackson's built different. I could. I could honestly see someone like Lamar Jackson being like, nah, nah, I'd rather go beat them at their place. I'd rather go back to Buffalo and do it. And he's just got that mindset. I didn't have that mindset. I want to play playoff games at home. But Lamar, I could just.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
He's.
Matt Hasselbeck
There's something special about both these two guys, and that's why it was such a great game to watch.
Colin Cowherd
It was. I said this and this was not a knock on Aaron, but I didn't think the story of the game was Aaron. I thought the story of the game was the jets have been looking for their next quarterback star for years, and I know it's week one. That was easily the best. I've seen Justin Fields play. And Matt, this is something you've taught me and others, is that it wasn't first read stuff. You'd watch his head. He would look left, he would look middle, he would look right. Let it rip. It'd be a dart like, that was quarterback play. Also, you're going up against Tomlin, T.J. watt, like, Pittsburgh plays defense. It was kind of jaw dropping. Like, I. I was like, oh, is he going to be Baker and Geno and Sam? Like, I don't know if you're the Jets. You wake up this morning, you got to feel pretty good about that loss, don't you?
Matt Hasselbeck
I mean, you got to be encouraged. I mean, until the night game, that was the game of the week. That was an incredible game. You know, I said I sort of felt like it was like a high school reunion. You're trying to impress your old flame kind of a game. Like the. Both quarterbacks were like, man, I got to be my best. I got to show out my best for, you know, I'm the one that got away like that. That's what it looked like for both quarterbacks. And I think people rallied around those both. Both quarterbacks. And I just thought the identity of what both teams is trying to be this year showed up. I thought Justin Fields was. I think he was good. Not great, but, like, I think he can be great. I really do. And, you know, obviously he's a great runner, but it's not about that. It's about. It's about being a passer first and then being a threat as a runner. On the flip side, Aaron Rodgers once was great with his feet and moving around the pocket. That's no longer his Game, unless you design it that way. So a drop back pass and then I go scrimmage. Campbell, no bueno. Okay. But a play action pass and a designed rollout move the pocket. Aaron Rodgers is as good as there's ever been with his eyes, his arm and his. And his head. I thought that was really good for Pittsburgh.
Colin Cowherd
I know it's a Monday, it's week one, but I watched Detroit's offense and people, coordinators matter, they matter. I mean, you, I remember Philadelphia lost two great coordinators, hired two new guys and like by week 10, you're like, they're bad. I watched the Lions. I'm sorry, but Ben Johnson was miss, was he not?
Matt Hasselbeck
Yeah, I mean, he's a great coach. I think maybe one of the best, maybe the best play caller in the game for the last couple of years. Just so creative, so confident and so that's not a knock on the new guys, but like it's going to take time to gel and there's a void there. You know, you lose maybe your best offensive coach to the Bears and then you maybe lose one of your other unsung hero offensive coaches to the Jets. That's not nothing. And that happens. You see great coaches and great assistant coaches. That happens in any organization, I think too, like someone leaves and you realize, oh, like, oh, wow, that person was a lot more valuable to who we were than we realized. But like you said, it's week one and they'll have a time to gel. But I think the story of that game was just how, I mean, how amazing the Green Bay packers looked. They, they came to play.
Colin Cowherd
You know, it's interesting. Micah only played about 40, 45% of the snaps. And take me to your experience in the NFL. There is something about adding a great.
Sponsor/Ad Voice
Player to a team.
Colin Cowherd
And it just, it felt like the packers confidence, like their chest was out and he played 40% of the snaps. But I don't know, it. It's almost like you go out drinking and you got one of the high school wrestlers behind you just in case you get a little saucy. I thought the packers played with so much confidence defensively.
Matt Hasselbeck
Yeah, it's like having a great closer in baseball. Like we, hey, we got a closer, you know, like if it's third and long, we got it. You know, we're in. We're going to have a game changing play. We're going to close the door. We're going to, we're going to do it. And I also think I told you on Friday, the unknown for an offense when you grow up, when you're going up against a great pass rusher and you don't know where he's going to line up, you don't know what down he's going to play on you. You don't know. Like our whole, you know, before you drop any pass plays, you drop your projection schemes and a lot of times you'll say, okay, we're going to slide the line to him. Well, what if he's not even on the field now? What like we're really going to slide a bunch of people to just some random dude? We don't even know who he is. So like it's a, it's. I actually as, as a quarterback, I would rather know where he's going to be and if he's going to be on the field every snap that would be easier. So I sort of like, I don't know, I feel the pain of Detroit. I mean, shoot, they were planning for this game. Michael Parsons not even on the team and then all of a sudden he's on the team and is even going to play. It was that that's not a great place to be as an offense.
Colin Cowherd
I said I have been a little underwhelmed in my career with Brock Purdy. I know he's talented, but I think he's been a tad overhyped because he's a seventh round pick. I remember in college the knock on him was he's small and his decision making, you know, he lets it rip. And I thought yesterday, Kittle, Trent Williams, Jennings out o lines. Okay. On the road, Seattle. I was kind of blown away with him. I don't care about the picks. I watched him yesterday carry a team that's the most impressed I've ever been. I'm serious. I was kind of. I think that defense for Seattle is fast. I thought Purdy was great. Your thoughts?
Matt Hasselbeck
Yeah. Hey, I can't stop smiling. Finally I'm showing you the light with brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, I mean even wasn't 100% there were a lot of questions if he was even going to play. Brock Purdy's unfazed. I'm not sure if he's ever lost in Seattle. I think he's, it's really impressive what he has done. He is, he is otherworldly to me when it comes to just like this cool, calm, collected. When the chaos is around, you know, in quarterbacks room we had this saying pretty much everywhere. I was be comfortable, get comfortable, being uncomfortable. And like that's what I see out of this guy. Listen, he looks like a high school quarterback. I get it. But he can make all the throws. He's way more mobile than people think. His teammates and coaches and general manager absolutely love him. They think he's worth every penny. When I turn on the tape, I think he's really good. I know people are looking for six, five and a half and all this other stuff and some big college, but I think he's a really, really good player.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, so listen, I do think a lot of the trouble in Miami is that is the front office. I don't like their roster. I think they went to perimeter speed, didn't pay attention to their offensive line. I think they're, they, you know, they move a lot and they're fun, but I don't. I don't. What. What's the meat in the sandwich for the Dolphins or maybe the Colts and Daniel Jones are underrated. That was embarrassing, though, for a week one performance like that, that you don't see that a lot. I'll never say quit, but there wasn't a lot of juice. Who do you credit? What do you make of the Dolphins getting completely blown out at Indy?
Matt Hasselbeck
Yeah, well, I, you know, I've heard you mention, and I think it's a great point. You know, there's something to be being a great play caller, but it's not. Doesn't necessarily mean you're a great head coach, you're a great culture setter leader, all that kind of stuff. And quite honestly, going back to last year, some of the things that I've seen on the sidelines, some of the things people say in the locker room, the Tyree Kill thing, it's. It's bad ball. Like, it's. I don't, I don't think it's a winning culture that way. I don't. Now, on the flip side, I think the Colts were playing for something bigger than themselves. Jim Ursay passing away. I played for the Colts for three years. That is a very fancy oriented kind of an organization, one heartbeat kind of thing. It started way back in the day with Tony Dungy and those guys. But even when I was an opponent, I remember when Chuck Pagano was going through cancer and as an opponent, I was looking over to the sidelines and looking at that organization, and I was saying, you know, there's something unique and special about what they got going on there top to bottom. And it made me actually want to go sign with that organization. I had respect for it. I think you still see that Miami has been more fragmented Than that, You know, I'm not. I'm not saying that's what they always were, but it's a. It's a little bit more fragmented and I do think that that shows up on the field. You either pull together or pull apart in times of adversity. That to me looked like a team that did not pull together.
Colin Cowherd
Finally, if I suggested to you that the Raiders are going to be vying for the playoffs, J. Mac and I have talked about this. Gino, with time to throw in a run game, is very effective in his career. His play action numbers are excellent. Crosby, I like Jacoby Myers, Brock Bowers, Ashton Genty. I think Colton Miller and their O lines better than average. I mean, they controlled that game. Gino was a notch above Drake May. I don't know. It's hard. Chip Kelly, Pete Carroll. I don't want to overreact, Matt, but it was impressive, was it not?
Matt Hasselbeck
It's hard not to overreact, but I mean, it was a 10, 7 game. At halftime they were losing to the Patriots and, you know, aside from 1/4 down conversion, a big play. You know, I don't know that they look that great, but sure, yeah, you play 60 minutes. I was impressed. I'm impressed with Pete Carroll, oldest head coach ever. Maybe. I don't know. He hates when I say that, so I say it more. But he's impressive. He's really good. Talked about culture and identity and how we talk in the building and what we're going to be. I love it. Chip Kelly, way underrated. Geno Smith, underrated. Max Crosby, game changer, Caused an interception with pressure. You know, we mentioned a closer before. That's why those pass rushers make that much money. I don't know if they have enough firepower offensively, but they might, you know, and knowing Pete Carroll, like they're going to go get it. This is a game that meant a lot to them. A lot of ties. Pete Carroll going back to New England, Chip Kelly's from New Hampshire, Tom Brady's kind of running football ops there. So we'll see. I think it's a long season, but this was a game that meant a lot to a lot of people in the Raiders organization. So huge win. A huge win on the road for Las Vegas.
Colin Cowherd
Great stuff. Matt Hasselbeck, what a fun weekend we had. Bears, Vikings tonight. I don't know what I'm going to get in that one. Matt.
Matt Hasselbeck
You know exactly what you're going to get tonight. You know exactly. You get a whole lot of Brian Flores and It's going to be impressive. Yep.
Colin Cowherd
We talked about that earlier. Keep your eye on Brian Flores and Caleb Williams and that, that chess match. Good talking to you, Matt, as always.
Matt Hasselbeck
Okay. See it.
Colin Cowherd
All right. So, yeah, I mean, I like Minnesota tonight. They have the better roster. I don't think home field in the NFL means more than maybe a point. There were a lot of things. I thought Michael Penix and Cam Ward looked good. Bo, Nick struggled. I've got some thoughts on that. I thought the Raiders. You know, I grew up watching the Raiders on the west coast play those four o' clock games with Stabler and Eugene Upshaw and I mean, Fred Bulitnikov and Cliff Branch. And those memories are so embedded for me as a kid. The Raiders are. Remember when the warriors before they got Steph. I said this before, it's a great brand. It's just been dormant or asleep for 30 years since Rick Barry. I mean, you watched the Raiders yesterday. They got some dudes. They got some dudes.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
They were fine. The Patriots looked inferior. You know, I'm going to ask you about one guy we haven't talked about, and that's Russell Wilson. Because, Colin, there's a lot of people talking about this New York Giants team. Hey, Daniel Jones sure looked awesome with the Colts. They scored on every drive. Russell Wilson and a team that returned 10 of 11 starters. And they couldn't do anything against Washington, which doesn't even have a great defense.
Colin Cowherd
Ask yourself this. Next week at half, Giants trail 14. Nothing gonna start losing the locker room next week.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
What about Thursday at practice? I'm wondering because Russ did not look comfortable doing it. Malik Neighbors was kind of erupting on the sideline. Listen, man, I know we like Dable, he's a sharp offensive mind. But Colin, it's starting to look like if this keeps up, he ain't lasting the season.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, no way.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
I don't think so.
Colin Cowherd
In LA, it's the herd.

Oh bears Vikings tonight. At the end of next hour we're gonna bring on Ty Dunn who has a three part expose on what a disaster Caleb Williams rookie year behind the scenes. Troubling if you're a Bears fan. They host the Vikings tonight. Think Minnesota is a one and a half point favorite. I like the Vikings. I think Brian Flores against young quarterbacks is a problem. Here's J. Mack with the news.
Matt Hasselbeck
No, no, no, no.
LeVar Arrington
Turn on the news.
Dion Dawkins
This is the Herd line news.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
I'll start with a game, Colin, that we totally nailed. Texans Rams. The under was a no sweat.
Colin Cowherd
My first ever under bet in the blazing five.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
So easy. Rams win 14, nine. It was tough. It was. It was a, you know, kind of unwatchable game. As we predicted, CJ Stroud did not have a good go. They settled for three field goals in the first half, 121 total net yards in the second half, two turnovers. And I didn't like this from C.J. stroud after the game. Take a listen.
CJ Stroud
You come out NFL lollygagging and you know, not going through the motions. That kind of happens. So I think we'll be all right. But I think it's a good way to call for. For me, you know, preparing. I got to do a better job. And I also got to hold my guys accountable, you know, for that one exotic. And it's the first game of the year. We got a lot of exotic looks we did not expect. They did too. They made the play. So you can come with a million excuses. We gotta just be better.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, first of all, these are excellent defenses. I mean, frisk Jared Verse. I just think I'm going to give both teams a pass. There's a reason I put an under in the blazing five. These Houston and D', Amico, Ryan's and the Rams. This game had 1714 written. I mean, listen, Houston was driving for the win.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
They were.
Colin Cowherd
And Landerman, that inside linebacker, made a great play. So I mean, this is one. It's Stafford's really good. But I. This was. You're talking about two of the top five or six defenses. I think Houston's defense is excellent.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
It is. Stafford had a Pretty damn good game. 21 of 29, 245 yards. I think he had. Pff. Turning him with the most big time throws. He had a sick no look pass. So I thought they played well. My thing about Stroud is these comments aren't great. And did you notice when he's running for his life, he runs like directly backwards. He's losing so many yards on these sacks and then blaming the offensive line. I think they lost their center. He was carted off.
Colin Cowherd
Well, they had four new starters lost their center. I mean, this game on the road before you got there, looked like trouble. This looked like a trouble. And again they were driving for the win.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Did you see explosiveness anywhere on that offense? Like I get it, you know, Nick Chubb looked.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Remember this defense for the Rams held Jalen hurts to like four 60 yards passing. All right, this. This defense gonna make a lot of good quarterbacks.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Click on the old Texan schedule. Oh, interesting. They. They host the Buccaneers next week. It looks like Monday Night football. Baker, Mayfield, C.J. stroud. Who's the best quarterback on the field in that one there cowherd, huh?
Colin Cowherd
Why do I always have to make choices? Well, it's. That's fun.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
We're talking about sports.
Colin Cowherd
It's.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Anyways. All right, let's move on to the next one. One of your favorite teams, the Broncos, they did not look good.
Colin Cowherd
Ooh. Both struggle.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Biggest spread of the week, depending on the number you got. They did not cover the eight and a half. Bo Nicks was. I mean, struggled as being generous. Look at that awful Pocket awareness. He had a fumble, two bad picks. I mean, look, look at that throat. What's he doing? And then he had a fourth down scramble. He tried his own tush push and like tripped. It was a total debacle. Bo Nicks did shout out the defense afterward, which had 6x.
Sean Payton
It's the best feeling when you got a great defense. I mean, just over and over, they just kind of took a, you know, got us out of a jam and continue to do that throughout the game. The one that really sticks out is, you know, they get the ball, you know, down one and we get two sacks and get them out of field goal range. That'll change the game in a hurry and change the, you know, environment, get guys back into the game. And it was just, it was awesome to see.
Colin Cowherd
I also, there is something to say here about Sean Payton challenges his quarterbacks, like really challenges them. I felt Denver, there's so much movement, so many substitutions. I felt several times like Bo Nix was getting to the line with 10 seconds left. You got to get to the line with 20 on the clock. So I feel like they're, you know, and Sean will do this. He's going to make, he's going to push you to the most you can handle. Bo Nix is in year two. And I just thought, listen, their O line's good. Cortland Sutton's excellent. Sean's a great coach. The defense is a sea of orange. I think they're going to be fine. I mean, they. How often in the NFL can you play poorly and win well when you're.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Facing a rookie quarterback at home, you, you better get that dub. But they struggled. I mean, listen, I know he's your boy and I like Sean Payton too. Some of the, some of the stuff he was calling yesterday, that fourth down decision to chuck it deep, I mean, it came Tennessee, the ball. I didn't like what I saw at all from Denver quickly on Tennessee. So Cam Ward, if you just looked at the stat line, 12 of 28, 112 yards. So you're like, oh, he's not good. Did you actually watch the game? Oh, I watched Pro Football Focus. Zero turnover worthy plays. He made good decisions. No four drops by the Titans and his average depth of target, he's throwing the ball downfield. Jared Goff was 4 yards yesterday. Everything short. No, Cam Ward was like 11. So I really like what I saw.
Colin Cowherd
I think he made a throw was early in the game. It may have been first quarter or early second. It was a jailbreak, like 12. It felt like there were 13 Broncos in his face. And without looking, he went like perpendicular. He went to his left, perfect throw out in the flat. And I'm like, I don't even know how he saw that.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
So all I know about Cam Ward is this. Some guys see the field and some don't. That dude sees the field. He was under the most pressure of any quarterback yesterday in the league. He's got nothing to work with and he is. He sees the entire field instantly.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Again, people will say, well, they lost the Browns. I'm just telling you, they play the Rams this week and the line is a touchdown and it's in Tennessee.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, I love Tennessee.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
I think you've got to bet the Jeffrey Simmons, by the way, was awesome. Besides that stupid penalty late, I think this team is going to be very frisky.
Colin Cowherd
Can you imagine you're a rookie in the NFL and you face the Broncos pass rush and then the Rams next. That's not, you could argue, two best defenses in the league.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
I'm just telling you that division is going to be open. I didn't like what I saw from the Texans. I like what I saw from the Titans in defeat. Maybe I'm going overboard. That's fine. Whatever. Final story, Colin. Oh, let's get to the Giants. I tried to force feed this a few minutes ago. This Russell Wilson thing. Oh, my God, what is he doing? Malik Neighbors was visibly angry with him on the sideline. Russ under pressure. 2 of 12 for 26 yards.
Colin Cowherd
Brutal.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
This is a veteran. Took two sacks afterward. There's a lot of questions about Jackson Dart.
Matt Hasselbeck
Here we go, Russ. Like I told you guys before, Russ was our. Our quarterback. I think what you do with your.
Colin Cowherd
Backup quarterback in your third quarterback, make.
Matt Hasselbeck
Sure you have enough packages in that.
Colin Cowherd
They go in the game. That is stuff that they feel comfortable with. So we'll see where we're at.
Matt Hasselbeck
We're going to get home, Pat. We're going to look at our game collectively. We all got to do better.
Colin Cowherd
It was just announced that Russell Wilson will start in Week 2 against the.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Cowboys to a chorus of boos from Giants fans. I don't know what to make of Cowboys, Giants this week.
Colin Cowherd
What's the line? Four and a half.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
I think it was. It went up. It was at. Hold up, hold up. It was three on the look ahead. Now it's at five.
Colin Cowherd
Cowboys favored by five.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
I don't see how the Cowboys should be favored just because they look good against the Eagles in the opener.
Colin Cowherd
Well, they get extra time. Remember, they get three extra days of practice.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
I need to see the injuries. But I, I, I, I bet the Giants last week so I'm not doing it again. But I do think that they will be for that's gonna be a good game.
Colin Cowherd
Divisional matchup Week two is an interesting betting week because you can really, you can fall in love. Like everybody now will sell their Patriot stock. New England has so many new players. I think New England will look much different and I think Denver will look much better.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
By the way, travels to Miami. So New England, Miami's good. But just to put a bow on the Giants, Washington's defense last year literally by almost every stat was like bottom eight in the league. And for the Giants to do nothing. Colin was a little troubling for Dable and Russell Wilson.
Colin Cowherd
I don't know.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
We'll see.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. J. Mack with the news well, that's the news and thanks for stopping by. The Herd lie news tied done last hour. As predicted, Oklahoma hammered Michigan, Michigan, Bryce Underwood's a really talented receiver quarterback. They don't have a very good receivers. They don't have a lot of juice to their offense. Bryce Underwood's really good. But Oklahoma found their quarterback and Oklahoma's defense is all juniors and seniors hammered. Well, I mean they control the game okay. I mean Michigan is not built to play from behind that receiving core 2413.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
No, it was, wasn't blowout city.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. I would say Oklahoma has to feel great like the jets, they found their quarterback. I mean, yeah, you have to say this about Justin Fields. Like it's a thing where like in New York, these organizations both since Eli Manning, it's like that you got, you're looking for your quarterbacks. It's hard. And my take with the Giants is play Jackson Dart because next year's quarterback draft is loaded. Figure out if he can play.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
You don't want to put it behind a line that can't protect him. Then he gets hurt or he just overwhelmed and you kill the kid's confidence. So there's no rush. Right. You need Andrew Thomas healthy. You need everybody healthy.
Colin Cowherd
Yes, I believe that's true. The other thing, and this sounds harsh is and this is always sound harsh. But when you, you have good people in a company and you, you know, we both have stakes in little companies and you lose somebody really good, you want to ideally hire somebody within the building. Right. Because you want to elevate. It's good for morale. You move somebody up in the building. But when you watch the hall of Fame game, you lose Ben Johnson sharp as attack, Aaron Glenn, I mean William elite defensive coordinator. And they decide we're just, we're just going to hire guys in the building. So Dan Campbell is not a schematic guy. Like, very rarely is your head coach a great scheme guy. Kyle Shanahan is, Andy Reid, Sean Payton are I think demico. Ryan's defensively is but generally a GM is hiring a CEO. So when you hire Dan Campbell, he's a culture builder. He's a guy's guy. Very alpha former player, build toughness. I remember going back to like Jared Goff's first year. They weren't very good, but man, nobody played harder than this team. So he is very reliant on scheme and coordinators. Nick Sariani, we've seen him with great coordinators. We've seen him with less than great coordinators. And Philly got bad really fast. So again, generally your coach isn't your best scheme guy. Shanahan is very unique. That's why Shanahan can lose guys. It doesn't affect the offense. Andy Reid can lose offensive coordinators. It doesn't affect it. McVeigh can lose offensive coordinators. It doesn't affect it because they're excellent. That's not Dan Campbell. So they went inside the building and handed the offense to an older gentleman who may be a solid coach. Ben Johnson was best in the league, best in class. So watching Green Bay in Detroit there is that you could not look the hall of Fame game. It was obvious. It was like, yeah, this doesn't work. This doesn't work at all. So I, I, you know, you don't want to go overboard, but remember, they're doing a couple things simultaneously. They're rebuilding the interior of the O line and they're bringing in a new coordinator. So that's a big ask if you don't have an elite offensive coordinator and you don't have an elite scheme coach. But that thing yesterday was like, I didn't feel that competitive. It wasn't Miami Colts, but it didn't feel terribly competitive. Jared Goff without Ben Johnson and McVeigh, if he doesn't get protection. I said this on the blazing five picks. You know, there's the Jeff Fisher, Jared Goff, then there's the McVeigh and then he goes early without Ben Johnson, you're like, oh. Then he gets Ben Johnson. You're like, okay. It's different. You know, coordinators are valuable, but Jared Goff is the last of the reasonably young sit in the pocket. Only he's not. He needs protection. Well, they're rebuilding the interior of the O line and they couldn't run the game with Jameer Gibbs. They couldn't run the ball. The other thing that jumped out to me, in this game, Micah Parsons only played 45% of the snaps. Like 45%. He had influence, it felt like on all of them. I mean, they, Green Bay played with a ton of confidence and it is remarkable when Belichick took over doing a lot of the drafting in New England, they could not draft offensive players. Green Bay just does not miss drafting offensive guy. All those receivers can play like all of them can. So, you know, my takeaway when you go into a weekend is people say you shouldn't overreact on a Monday. No, I, I reacted at the hall of Fame game with Detroit hiring in the building and I'm reacting here. I don't care what the Vikings and Bears look like tonight and I, I've seen enough of the Lions. Green Bay's roster now is the best and they're not rebuilding anywhere. Every everybody else in the league's got concerns. Minnesota doesn't know they have a quarterback. Chicago didn't know what they have at quarterback. They're rebuilding their O line. The lines are rebuilding their interior O line. Green Bay is not rebuilding anything.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
By the way, did you see Parsons in his videos going right at Penny Sewell, like getting by him like it was nothing. Now I know he was on a pitch count. Let me quickly ask you, Detroit, how down are you? Because they will be hosting the Chicago Bears on Sunday at 1. It's on Fox. Bears on a short week. Detroit going home on the indoor fast track. Do you want to guess the line for that game?
Colin Cowherd
Oh, let me think about that. I would say Detroit off a humiliating loss, favored by 4, 5. Yeah, I would probably, depending on what I see tonight.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Ben Johnson now going back to Detroit, he knows that defense as well as anybody. I think that's a phenomenal matchup on Fox next Sunday. Obviously Detroit's got to win and look good, but Chicago could be behind the eight ball. Short week. Ben Johnson against Detroit's going to be hyped in the media. That's a fascinating game.
Colin Cowherd
There are two instances yesterday where I do think you have to slow down on the criticism. Bonix prime example. Sean Payton puts. We had Drew Brees on this show last year 10 times. Drew Brees will tell you, Sean load you up. He is going to challenge you at practice every day. I believe Denver and I think knowing that he was facing a rookie quarterback at home, knowing that his defense would dominate, I think he put a lot on Bo Nix's plate. I thought they were getting to the line way too late. So I think Denver's offense will look better. I remember it's a 17 game schedule. Starters do not play in the preseason. They don't play much. So there are some things I'm going to take from Bo Nixon. Go, let's scale back. I think they'll be fine. The other thing is Michael Penix lost. I thought Penix had some sensational moments again. You're talking about Todd Bowles. You're talking about, you know, Tampa's probably got the better roster. But I thought Cam Ward looked really, really solid. I thought Justin Fields kind of blew me away. And I thought Michael Penix. Listen, if Michael Pennix can play and we'll find out if JJ McCarthy can play tonight, we know Jaden Daniels can play. Drake May is going to be better. Have we ever had like a 6 for 6 or a 5 for 5 first round with quarterbacks?
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
I don't know that we've ever been that. Penix was great, the defense was good. Baker just beat him with the drive and the kicker missed to go back to Denver for a sec. So they traveled to Indy this week. I don't know if Indy's going to be the surprise team of the league or what, but that to me is an interesting matchup for Denver because I didn't think Bo Nicks look great, but Indy made TUA look awful. Two, two interceptions and a fumble. If Bo Nicks looks shaky again, does that recalibrate your thoughts on the Broncos? We've seen CJ Stroud have a sophomore slump. Who was the other guy? There's a lot of concern about Jaden Daniels, a potential sophomore slump. Do you think Knicks has one or was this just a one off?
Colin Cowherd
Well, great quarterbacks don't have sophomore slumps. Burrow didn't. Mahomes didn't.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Well, I don't think. We think he's in that class. Come on.
Colin Cowherd
That's right. Good quarterback, C.J. stroud do. So I think for great quarterbacks, home field doesn't mean anything. Mahomes can win anywhere. Josh can win anywhere. Lamar can win anywhere. For good quarterbacks, home field means something. And I also think for great quarterbacks, they'll overcome a slightly above average coordinator. For good quarterbacks, they'll go backwards. So I mean, my strongest opinions of the week of this weekend are Green Bay's winning that division. Green Bay, with Micah playing less than half the snaps, played with a confidence I haven't seen a Packer defense play within years. That's my strongest takeaway. My second strongest takeaway is Josh Allen is the most talented quarterback I've ever seen in my life. Whoa, whoa.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Ever in your life?
Colin Cowherd
Ever? I've never seen a quarterback that talented. I mean, you love Lamar. You think Lamar is going to come back in a big spot from 15 down with three and a half minutes.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
So most so Patrick Mahomes, he's more talented than Patrick Mahomes?
Colin Cowherd
Yes. Bigger. Stronger. He's bigger. Stronger than Patrick. That's not even debatable.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Right?
Colin Cowherd
He's two, three inches bigger. He's about three and a half inches taller. He weighs another 30 pounds. He's got more horsepower.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
Tom Brady.
Colin Cowherd
Tom Brady's the most productive. You don't confuse production with talent. Joe Montana, again, super productive. Josh Allen has a defensive coach that half the league doesn't like. One guy had Bill Walsh had. Belichick has Andy Reid.
Sports Analyst/Co-host (possibly Jason McIntyre or similar)
I gotta process this.
Colin Cowherd
The most talented quarterback I've ever seen him ever. Ever. I remember when Mel Kuiper came out before the draft and he had the 10 greatest quarterback prospects ever. Josh Allen was nine or 10 and he had a losing record. He couldn't win. I watched Josh Allen twice at Wyoming against Oregon and Iowa. I was told by Greg Cosell the year before said, watch this kid in Wyoming, watch the kid in Wyoming. I watched him. He had an insane arm and made a throw across his body in one of the games. That doesn't make sense. But he was. He got blown out. And Seattle had Russell Wilson in his prime going to Super Bowls and John Snyder and Pete Carroll went to see him play. Hour 3 Next make your game day.
