Find your local station for the herd@foxsportsradio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. Now let's get this party started. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go, our number two hour one flew by. It's the hurt. So before we get to Joel Clatton, about five or six minutes I I came in this morning and in the current playoff picture, the Detroit Lions, the Ravens and the Chiefs are not in. So this is what I'm about to do is hypothetical but if the Colts don't win, if the Colts beat the Chiefs this weekend, I don't think Kansas is making the playoff and Detroit right now is in a fight because right now, this morning they got their head coach taking over play calling duties and I don't love where Detroit's at, although I love their roster. So I said it's most of the teams that are in the playoffs I think are going to stick. I think we're pretty close. So let's take the teams. If the playoffs started today, this would be the playoff matchups. Denver gets a buy as a number one seed. I think that will be the case. I would take in the wild card round Buffalo to beat Pittsburgh even though it's at Pittsburgh because they won their division. Pittsburgh's lost six straight playoff games and in five of six they've been gashed. And if you have a good run game, you could give Buffalo trouble here. But I get a major, major quarterback advantage, major offense advantage and Pittsburgh can't run the ball and they have not ended seasons well since about 2016. Buffalo. I would take the Colts at home over the Chargers. A dependable run game and O line again if, if maybe if it's on the road, it's different. But folks, the better roster right now due to injuries is the Colts. And I I've said this in the playoffs in baseball, I'll say it in the NFL playoffs, good old lines endure and last and keep the ball away from star coaches and star quarterbacks. Take the Colts and then I would take the Patriots at home to beat the Jags in the wild card round. You trust Jacksonville in cold weather. Really? You trust Trevor Lawrence cold weather up north? I don't. So I would have Denver buy Buffalo. Colts Patriots advancing now we go to the divisional round. I would take Denver over Buffalo. Denver at home off a by Sean Payton offensive coach off a buy. First of all, the Bills can't stop the run. Between Bo Nicks Bonix's legs and the run game, I think it'd be death by a thousand cuts. Colts, Patriots Daniel Jones regression, cold weather. I'm gonna take New England. I don't trust Daniel Jones in this spot. I think New England pressures the quarterback. I've watched Daniel Jones with a little pressure. I. I know what I get now. Patriots, Broncos. I'm taking Denver. More playmakers on both side of the ball. More elite players in their prime. If you look at recent history, offensive coach against defensive coach in divisional round and conference championships has favored the offensive coach Denver to the super bowl as of today. Now Baltimore and Kansas City today are not in the AFC playoffs. Maybe that changes things. But the matchups, that's where I would go. Nfc, let's go wild card. Seattle, Tampa with the Eagles getting the buy, I take Seattle. Why? Better overall roster. If you look at Baker Mayfield when facing pressure this year and Seattle applies a lot of pressure. Baker facing pressure. 46 passer rating. Seattle is also bizarrely the best road team in the NFL the last two years. Green Bay. Chicago is a coin flip. If it's at Chicago. I take Chicago. I would. I'd take Caleb Williams making a play Chicago in bad Weather and that'll be bad weather, is a consistently better run team. Chicago runs the ball a lot and runs it well. Green Bay runs it a lot and doesn't run it well. I would take the Bears in an ugly, windy, cold, low scoring game. Niners at the Rams. McVeighs had Shanahan's number recently. I think it's a. Rams have a better overall roster. I trust their health. I trust their offensive and defensive consistency. No question, the Rams are the much better defense than the Niners this year. And that's not particularly close. Now we go to the NFC divisional round. I would take the Eagles off a bye, beating Seattle. Why? Philly in the playoffs creates turnovers. Seattle leads the NFL in giveaways. Sam in this spot, cold, windy, on the road. What Philadelphia does well defensively and Seattle can struggle with offensively. Take Philly, Bears, Rams again. If you go look at The Rams under McVeigh, home playoff games, they win and they win convincingly. I think the more well rounded team, the veteran quarterback, the veteran coach take the Rams to win convincingly. Rams Philly game of the year in the playoffs. I would take the Rams. Listen, right now, the Rams defense, everybody's good. The Rams offense more consistent. The Rams run the ball better, they throw it better. I get McVeigh. Stafford over, hurt Sirianni in a big spot. As long as it's not blowing sideways. Even if it is, Rams running game is better. I'll take the Rams. We get to the Super Bowl. Rams over Denver again. I get the veteran quarterback, two great defenses. The Rams are the least penalized team in the league. The Broncos are the most penalized team in the league. In close games, that stuff matters. Stafford, McVeigh win their second Super bowl together. As of now, Baltimore Chiefs could make the playoffs. I would take Denver. J. Mac's beside himself. He didn't know what to do with that.
Fox Sports Analyst
I'm flabbergasted. That Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl.
Joel Klatt
What?
Fox Sports Analyst
How do you not have the Bills winning in the first round? I mean, there's too much there to chew on. I know we got a guest. Let's revisit later in the show, okay?
Colin Cowherd
Okay. And Joel Klatt now joining us live. The College Football Playoff. Miami is all upset. Boy, Miami is all upset. And I said there are nine. Fans in America are furious. I think head to head matters less than it used to. It still matters. Absolutely. But it doesn't matter like it did. It's like the NFL. The Raiders beat the Patriots in Week 1. Nobody cares as college football has created a playoff and has extended their season more games, it just doesn't have the impact. And right now those two ugly losses for Miami, I would put Notre Dame narrowly ahead of Miami. Would you?
Joel Klatt
So I think it matters if you're comparing them directly. And right now they're not being compared directly. And I think that's where it's at. And I do think that the playoff committee has maybe artificially, but they have created a buffer between Miami and Notre Dame so that they're not compared, you know, and you could maybe say that's intentionally, I'm not sure. But for instance, the resume for Alabama is much better than Notre Dame. So it doesn't really make sense for them to fall behind Notre Dame. Unless you're going to go just based on eye test. And remember, there are coaches on this committee. Mark Dantonio, the former Michigan State coach, he's obviously going to favor a run oriented team that's consistent. Well, that's Notre Dame versus Alabama. Mike Riley is on the staff, you know, which can't run the football. So I think that the eye test has won out in a lot of these arguments for this version of the committee. And right now there's a buffer. You've got Utah and BYU sitting in there. You've got Alabama. So you don't have to directly compare Notre Dame and Miami. Now if they for whatever reason get closer to one another and it becomes a discussion about Miami or Notre Dame for inclusion into the playoff, then you have to go head to head. This is where I would disagree with you. If it comes down to those two, you have to honor the on field result. But until they're compared directly, at this point the committee is not really taking that into consideration.
Colin Cowherd
So Georgia beats Texas again with physicality. All three games have looked the same to me. I didn't think Arch played bad. I didn't think he was the story. What are we to make? I've said this. USC and Texas, even when they're good, are kind of pretty. Georgia's never been pretty. I think Georgia is just an awful matchup for Texas. I actually think, I actually think, and I was wrong on this. I think Oklahoma is actually built like an SEC team. They good quarterback?
Joel Klatt
Well, they proved that at Bama. You know, they went in there and played great defense.
Colin Cowherd
That's right. And I. What do we think of the Texas Longhorns today? What do we think of them?
Joel Klatt
I think they're out. You know, there was this conversation like, well, maybe at 9 and 3 Texas because one of those losses is at Ohio State. Maybe they could back their way into the playoff. No, no, no. I'm done with that. Not after the way that they lost to Georgia. Not after their even. By the way, a couple of their close wins are awful. I mean, Mississippi State and Kentucky are not good football teams. They had to take overtime to do that. In fact, they remind me a lot of last year's Bama team that was left out of the playoff. Remember, last year's Bama team was, was 9 and 3. Last year's Bama team had a win over Georgia. This year. You know, Texas has a big win over Oklahoma. So you've got two big wins. They each had really difficult road losses this year. Texas at Ohio State last year, Bama at Tennessee. And then they each had bad, brutal late season beats on the road. Last year's Bama team got drilled by Oklahoma late and Texas this year got drilled by Georgia late. To me, it's not a resume that you can get back into the playoffs. So to me, Texas is done. And any conversation that suggests otherwise is nefarious in my estimation. If you look at their resume, if you watch them on tape, neither of those things can put Texas into that college football playoff. And Georgia, by the way, I just think Georgia is the best SEC team that we, that we're seeing right now, whether they get to the SEC championship game or not. Colin, that's the best team in the SEC because you got to play against great players who believe in their coach and their coach believes in them. Think about that sequence where they go for it on fourth down, fourth and one from their own 35 yard line up 14:10. And all of a sudden Arch goes from throwing a touchdown pass with 5 1/2 minutes left. He doesn't see the ball again until eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Down 28:10. What a sequence in there with the onside kick. The fourth downs. Kirby was amazing.
Colin Cowherd
What if Texas hammers Texas A and M?
Joel Klatt
I don't care.
Colin Cowherd
Like hammers 31 to 7.
Joel Klatt
Do you really think they're. I mean, I don't think.
Colin Cowherd
I don't buy Texas A and M, so I don't. I watched the entire game last week. I don't care. You can't get down 30 to 3 at home to South Carolina. I think Texas is going to beat Texas and M soundly and then they're going to say, well, okay, we lost to Georgia. Well, they're the best team and we narrowly lost.
Joel Klatt
They also needed a. They also needed a Punt return and overtime to beat Mississippi State. They also needed overtime to beat Kentucky. You know, like, I, I don't, I don't see it, I don't see it with Texas. Now if you were going to set a precedent for a 9 and 3 team to make the playoffs, let's make them good. You know, this Texas team hasn't even played well for 60 minutes, not one time this entire season. So that would, I mean, I would call into question that they're all of a sudden going to drill Texas A and M. I mean, A and M, yes, you ride the roller coaster. You got the terrible first half, but they had a great second half. You know, I think, I just don't think that at 9 and 3 Texas has, has any business sniffing around this playoff.
Colin Cowherd
No, I just say if they blow out A and m, there'll be three and two against.
Joel Klatt
Yeah, but you could have an 11 and two BYU, you could have a 10 and two Utah, you could have a 10 and 2 USC. I mean, there are a lot of teams that you could have a 10 and 3 Alabama. You know, what do you do with the 10 and 3 Alabama that goes to the SEC championship game maybe and loses? I mean, what, what do you do with them? They would be over Texas. So I think Texas has too much to overcome.
Robert Smith
All right.
Colin Cowherd
The usc, Oregon, I don't think, I don't know if they can block Oregon. I do not know if USC can block Oregon's 2 first round defensive lineman up front.
Joel Klatt
I'm not as concerned with if they can block them, whether they can tackle them.
Colin Cowherd
I think Oregon is going to win by about 10 to 13 points. Do you?
Joel Klatt
I think it's a bad matchup for usc. And I said the same thing about, about the Iowa game last last week. And Iowa did cover, but USC showed me a lot when in that game, in those conditions the way that they did being down 217 and coming back and winning that football game, that was really, really good. And in particular their defense holding Iowa to nothing, really 100 yards and no points in the second half. That was huge. But, but Oregon's a different animal. And that location where they're playing, different animal. We know that USC struggles a little bit on the road, even though they've gotten some road victories here this season. If I told you that Oregon was the second best rushing team in the country, yards per carry, you you'd be like, oh, I didn realize that. Well, they are, they're ahead of teams like Notre Dame. Notre Dame shredded this USC defense running the Football and Oregon will line up with a stable of backs. They've got three or four different backs that they can hand the football to, and they will run the rock with physicality. They did it against Iowa. They've been doing it against everybody. So the fact that they're banged up at the wide receiver position and the skill positions with who is it Gary Bryant has been out to, Corian Moore has been out, that doesn't bother me as much because they can lean on the run game specifically against this US USC team. By the way, they couple that with the number one pass defense in America. So again, it's like the matchup does not favor usc. If they win this, they will be firmly in the playoff in my estimation, because it's not a matchup that favors them and it's a tough location to play.
Colin Cowherd
You know, it really comes down to USC and have they. Had they beaten Illinois, which, by the way, they scored the go ahead touchdown. I was there with a minute to go, and I remember I got a text from a friend. He goes, boy, they pulled it out. And I said, no, no, Illinois's got a great kicker. USC not stopping them. Their defense been on the field.
Joel Klatt
They scored too fast. I said it on the broadcast. Yeah, they scored with too much time left.
Colin Cowherd
And that defense for in the second half, Illinois was doing whatever they wanted to. They scored too fast. They won that game. You could lose close to Oregon, you lose to Notre Dame, you can get into the playoff. But I don't. I don't think they match up well. So let me throw this out, is that I read these stories. I don't know if I believe them. There's an ultimatum. Ole Miss has given Lane Kiffin an ultimatum. Now, my take is, couldn't it be.
Joel Klatt
Somewhere in the middle, right? I mean, couldn't they be like, hey, we need an answer. But it's not a full ultimatum. So you can, you can say like, no, that's totally false. There's no ultimatum. But behind the scenes they're probably like, hey, like, we need an answer.
Colin Cowherd
So I think he should stay at Ole Miss or go probably. I don't want him bounce into LSU or Florida either. Stay at Ole Miss. They've got nil money. I made a call on that two days ago. They've got nil money. That's not an issue. He'll be. I think the SEC jobs outside of maybe Georgia are all kind of the same. They're all dysfunctional, a bit delusional. Georgia between Georgia high school football and Florida and just the revenue. Georgia, to me is like, is good. It's a top five job in the country. Maybe Bama, but Bama doesn't have Georgia's high school football talent within 100ft of the campus. So I. To me, if you have an SEC job and you're winning, stay in that job. Or you disagree?
Joel Klatt
I don't disagree. And my take is not necessarily on the level or quality of the job. I would just say if he was going to stay at Ole Miss, I think he would have already done it. And I know I've bounced around on this. I have been kind of all over the map. And part of that is because Lane is all over the map. Yeah. And, you know, like. Like it or not, Lane loves this. He loves to be the center of attention on social media in the college football world. He loves this. I mean, he. Two weeks ago, he ran out into the middle of the field so that he could photobomb a couple that was getting engaged on the field at Ole Miss.
Colin Cowherd
And he loves being the center of.
Joel Klatt
Attention, and he is right now.
Colin Cowherd
And Colin here.
Joel Klatt
But here's the thing. If he wanted to stay, he would stay, and we would have already known it. Look at all the other coaches around the country that have said they're staying or signed extensions. And Ole Miss I know, has told him money is not a factor here. Whatever you get offered, we will match it. So it's not that he's going to make more somewhere else, which is starting to lead me to believe. And again, I. I will fully own. I have been all over the map on. On this and Lane, But Lane is a unique cat. Now. I don't know if he can come back to Ole Miss. You can't lead him on for this long. And then now there's going to start to be animus, like, why aren't you signing an extension? What's the problem? And I think he's going to Florida. I really do. I think he's going to Florida, and I think he's going to be the next coach of the Gators. And I think that we're going to have one of the biggest messes and in college football history go down before the playoff. When Lane Kiffin steps away from a college football playoff team and goes to coach another team, you know what he.
Colin Cowherd
Should say right before the egg bowl. That's where they want the answer. And say, well, I'm going to make you fire. I'm not going to give you an answer. Fire me. And Ole Miss will back off and they can't just say fire me if you're going to fire me or hire another coach and see how it plays to your booster group.
Joel Klatt
That would be the leverage he could play because he's certainly in the driver's seat here.
Sophie Cunningham
But.
Joel Klatt
But my point being, regardless of, of what they're trying to do in this quote unquote ultimatum, if he wanted to be there, Colin, he would have already been there. He would have already signed. That's. That's where I'm starting to sit. Sit here. And I think he's going to Florida.
Colin Cowherd
Well, I don't think there's anything wrong with taking phone calls unless you're married. Other than that. Phone calls. Not with marriage. Everything else, take phone calls. Right. Every job.
Joel Klatt
Good caveat. That was a nice. That was a really nice save there. That was a great caveat.
Colin Cowherd
Okay. Ohio State host Rutgers. All the years you've been covering college football, those Alabama defenses were unbelievable with Nick, but he didn't have the nil or transfer portal. If he had a weakness, he had a weakness. Now you can just go solve it. Not only can you solve it, you can go get the best player in the country and put them in the spot you need at corner like Caleb Downs or safety. Yeah. So the transfer portal is. It's free agency. And so it's not just, you know, if even Nick Saban would be like, we're probably one pass rusher away. Well, you go to a junior college, but you can't really solve it now you can go buy the best player in the country at that position. Does this Ohio State defense, does it rank with the Saban defenses or the best you've ever seen in college? Oh, yeah.
Joel Klatt
They've given up eight total touchdowns in 10 games. They're giving up seven and a half points per game. I mean, yeah, absolutely. This is one of the best defenses I've ever seen and ever covered. They're good on every single level. I think their schematics are as good as I've ever seen in college. And here's the thing. They're running the New England Patriots defense, the Patriots defense that gave professional play callers and quarterbacks and NFL guys problems for years. They're running that. And the reason that they can is that their players are so intelligent. Caleb Downs is one of the most intelligent players that I've ever been around covering this sport. Sonny Styles is the same way. Arvell Reese has stepped in. And by the way, I think Arvell Reese is playing himself into a top three pick in college in the NFL draft because people are going to start to view Arval Reese like Micah Parsons or an Abdul Carter, a guy that can play off the ball, but also on the ball and present and create pressure. So Reese's stock is through the roof. So they've got a top three pick in the NFL draft sitting on their defense. And he might not even be the best player on their defense because Downs is still behind him, who's probably a top tick, a Tom top tick, top 10, excuse me, pick in the NFL draft. So, yeah, this is. This is as good as it gets. And it's the marriage between Matt Patricia and what he's doing schematically. The players, their intellect, their physicality, their ability to run, their length, all of it. This is the best defense that I've seen. And. And there's been some good ones. Yeah, Nick had some good ones at Bama. There were some really good ones at Georgia. This one is right up there with those.
Colin Cowherd
Hey, by the way, talking yesterday, the day before actually was in the last 72 hours, I have talked to an NFL head coach, okay. And this NFL coach text me and said Mendoza at Indiana, he said he's one of the easier quarterbacks to evaluate. That he remembers in college. He goes, because Indiana uses some NFL stuff.
Joel Klatt
Yep.
Colin Cowherd
He says Indiana does a really good job. Kurt Signetti to run some pro Sunday stuff. He said Mendoza's. You know, he goes, the biggest problem he texted me is a lot of times these college programs are doing stuff for years and years. Even with Mahomes, you're like, well, it doesn't look close to the NFL.
Joel Klatt
Didn't translate schematically.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. What is that Big 12 stuff? NFL. This coach said really easy comp. He's one of the easier evals. Arm size NFL. You look at their offense, you'll be able to watch him watch the film and figure out, okay, that's what we would do on Sunday. He's either good at it or average at it. Just throw that out there. That, that he's going to be. He's.
Joel Klatt
He's also got the experience, which I love. You know that. You know, I always talk about reps and number of starts. This is what hurts a guy like Ty Simpson who hasn't started a huge number of games in college football. Yeah, that. Listen, Mendoza is going to be easily a top three pick, maybe the top pick in the entire NFL draft. And here's the thing. We haven't even gotten to the interview process. I think that's going to be his best trait, is his interview Process. When I sit with him, it's like I'm sitting across the table from Kirk Cousins. And I mean that in a compliment way. He understands what he's about. He knows who he is. He knows the offense. He's. He's comfortable in his own skin. He's. He's a football nerd in the best ways possible. And so Mendoza is going to be evaluated just based on the film is possibly a number one pick. Then when he walks into the room and they meet him, they're going to be like, yep, he's a face of the franchise type of guy. You know, at this point with, with the size of Ty Simpson and the fact that he hasn't played a ton of football. And I would suggest to him that he go back. Dante Moore, go back, play more football in the college game. I think Mendoza is, is, is on the trajectory to be the number one pick in the draft.
Colin Cowherd
For the record, when you played minor league baseball, what position did you play?
Joel Klatt
I was a third baseman and played a little first base as well.
Colin Cowherd
Reportedly, you were Mike Schmidt without any power or range.
Joel Klatt
Yeah, that's right. You know what I lacked in power, I made up for in a lack of speed.
Colin Cowherd
Here's.
Joel Klatt
Oh, you've got the swings. Oh, no, look at this.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, well, you have warning track power. Let's see. Here's another one.
Joel Klatt
I was bitterly disappointed I couldn't get one of those out. Bitterly disappointed.
Colin Cowherd
Who was pitching?
Joel Klatt
It was a machine and it just wasn't like fast enough. Try to generate that pop. That was like center field. Gross. Gosh dang it.
Colin Cowherd
You look like a pitcher trying to hit kind of. Now that's. Now hold on a second.
Joel Klatt
I tell you, my ribs were sore the next day, Colin. I was swinging hard, man.
Covino
You know what?
Colin Cowherd
That's kind of. I actually got impressed. Look at that. I mean, I appreciate that. How old are you? Right?
Joel Klatt
I'm 43 now.
Colin Cowherd
All right, all right.
Joel Klatt
Almost.
Colin Cowherd
That's not bad. It's a good looking swing.
Pharmaceutical Ad Voice
Almost.
Joel Klatt
Almost.
Colin Cowherd
All right, buddy. Great seeing you.
Joel Klatt
Great to see you as well. Good to be in Chicago to see you in person and yeah, we'll see you next week, brother.
Colin Cowherd
All right. That was fun.
Robert Smith
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Michigan, Northwestern turned out to be a really, really interesting game. And Wrigley Field was Murphy's. If you're ever in Wrigley Field, Murphy's a good place to go. Gets a little sideways at Murphy's. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd, weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio.

Covino
Hey, we're Covino and Rich, Fox Sports radio every day 5 to 7pm Eastern. But here's the thing. We never have enough time to get to everything we want to get to.
Joel Klatt
And that's why we have a brand new podcast called Over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun in our two hour show. We never get to everything honestly, because this guy is over promising things we never have time for.
Fox Sports Analyst
Yeah, you blubber lips blaming me.
Covino
Well, you know what? It's called Over Promise. You should be good at it because.
Colin Cowherd
You'Ve been over promising women for years.
Joel Klatt
Well, it's a Covino and Rich after show and we want you to be a part of it. We're going to be talking sports of of course, but we're also gonna talk life and relationships.
Colin Cowherd
And if Rich and I are arguing.
Joel Klatt
About something or we didn't have enough.
Colin Cowherd
Time, it will continue on our after.
Joel Klatt
Show called Over Promised.
Covino

Robert Smith
I'm Robert Smith. This is Jacob Goldstein. And we used to host a show called Planet Money. And now we're back making this new podcast called business history about the best ideas and people and businesses in history and some of the worst people, horrible ideas and destructive companies in the history of business. Having a genius idea without a need for it is nothing. It's like not having it at all. It's a very simple, elegant lesson. Make something people want. First episode, how Southwest airlines use cheap seats and free whiskey to fight its way into the airline business. The most Texas story ever. There's a lot of mavericks in that story. We're gonna have mavericks on the show. We're gonna have plenty of robber barons. So many robber barons. And you know what? They're not all bad. And we'll talk about some of the classic great moments of famous business geniuses, along with some of the darker moments that often get overlooked, like Thomas Edison.
Fox Sports Analyst
And the electric chair.
Robert Smith
Listen to business history on the iHeartRadio Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcast.
Colin Cowherd
No, no, no, no. Turn on the news.
Fox Sports Analyst
This is the headline news. By the way, I love that video of clad at Wrigley. If you and I had a contest, who could hit one further, who do you think wins that?
Colin Cowherd
Well, I'm 60. I would hope you could.
Fox Sports Analyst
I'm not good at baseball, the one sport I can't do. All right, let's go to the NFL and Dan Campbell. Colin, remember the big story. Hey, Dan Campbell's taken over play calling and they destroyed Washington. Well, Dan Campbell called plays against the Eagles and it was a disaster. Over five on fourth downs. The offense couldn't do anything. Amon ra st brown had two catches on, I believe, 11 targets. Jared Goff somehow took the blame.
Colin Cowherd
I don't think anything feels off except for this past week.
Joel Klatt
I thought I was off trying to.
Colin Cowherd
Get him the ball and he's playing well, man. I. I got to find ways to get it to him in space and be a bit more accurate in some of those instances. I have been in my career, so.
Joel Klatt
Not something I'm worried about.
Colin Cowherd
But last week was a little bit off and prior to that, I don't think there's been any issue. So ask Yourself. Why are the Lions not as good offensively this year? What would that be?
Fox Sports Analyst
So obviously the answer is Ben Johnson. But all these Lions fans got geeked after that Washington game. Remember, they're like, oh, the offense is fixed. We just needed Dan calling things. Everybody scores on Washington. Come on. Okay. The Eagles game was a wake up call this week. I don't know. I mean, what are we to make of when they put 48 on the Giants? Are we Dan Campbell a genius again? Because you know they're going to score it on at will against the Giants.
Colin Cowherd
This is one of the things I said, when you have an open. When you lose a great coordinator, be very careful about hiring within the building. I said this about Michigan football. Be very careful. When you lose an iconic legend that wins a natty giving your favorite assistant the job, is that the best guy for the jobs? What the players like, it's why interim coaches get jobs. They rarely work. And so you had Ben Johnson, who for two years was the most talked about coordinator in football on either side leaves and they're like, well, the guy in the building sort of knows what's going on. Okay, be careful. Just, just. This was my fear. They're not as good offensively. Go look at their losses and what they've scored like. They're just a mediocre offense about every third week.
Fox Sports Analyst
Well, I think there's a couple truisms in the NFL, right? Jared Goff, cold weather outdoors against a push up the middle. He's not good. Cleveland Browns defense at home, elite, right? There's just a few things that, you know, in the NFL are true. You know what? Another one. Dan Campbell, awful loss going home against a bad team. I'm telling you, they're going to destroy the Giants and Lions fans are going to get all wacky. But again, I want to know what Goff is going to do against the elite teams. And that game on Thanksgiving is. Thanksgiving has an unbelievable slate. By the way, you cannot be eating too much turkey and falling asleep early. Colin, the slate is absolute fire. Next Thursday, including the Lions. Right, let's move to George Pickens and the Dallas Cowboys. Listen, Pickens had another good game. Again, it depends who you cook. It was the Raiders.
Colin Cowherd
Come on.
Fox Sports Analyst
Anyways, Pickens is. Is very excited and cooking. And guess what? His head coach is singing his praises.
Colin Cowherd
Sign me up. I mean, I mean, what do you say? Those two guys, I just. I love their relationship, man. I love the firepower that they give us, you know, I mean, that's, you know, one of those Games where, you know, you never know which one it's going to be. Some games, it's both of them. Some games, it's one of them. And again, like I said, I just, you know, I pinch myself at times. I'm very in favor of George having a long term future with us here in Dallas. Well, their O line is young and inexpensive. Their defense, they're going to use two first round picks to shore up the defense. That now, without signing Micah is pretty inexpensive. You're paying Dak and CD Lamb a lot.
Pharmaceutical Ad Voice
Lot.
Colin Cowherd
Can you pay Pickens pretty decent money?
Fox Sports Analyst
Well, one of the problems is the defensive tackles. They traded for Quinn, so you got. I'll butcher his name, but OSA oh just signed a deal worth $80 million. Quinn and Williams is making huge money. And Kenny Clark, they have next year committed 60 million to defensive tackle Colin.
Robert Smith
Okay.
Fox Sports Analyst
Which is goofy. And now you're going to pay, essentially the T. Higgins and Jamar Chase.
Colin Cowherd
The O line is cheap. It's cheap, it's young and it's inexpensive.
Fox Sports Analyst
It was. It was okay. This year there's some injuries.
Colin Cowherd
The first two picks are going to be defense. They're going to get a corner and an edge rush. So that will mitigate a lot of what you're paying Quinn and Williams. And for the record, every good GM in the league is willing to pay an all pro interior lineman, Quinn and Williams, money. That. That is not money. It's not a safety or a. So my take is if. If you hit two first rounders on defense, you're paying Dax, CD Quinn and Williams big boy money. I could pay George Pickens in that T. Higgins range.
Fox Sports Analyst
Well, they're probably going to tag him, right? That seems like everybody in Dallas seems to think, oh, you just tag him. Well, you know what? Pickens is a fickle individual. Okay. He's gonna be like, I need to be paid like a top five guy.
Joel Klatt
And.
Fox Sports Analyst
And we're. And Jerry's going to say, we're going to tag you. I'll say this about Jerry and you just articulated it. He's trying to do things differently.
Colin Cowherd
Right.
Fox Sports Analyst
He's going a little cheap on the offensive line. Cheap and inexperienced. And we're going to pay receivers, defensive tackles and hope we hit on draft picks. It's different. Will it work? Time will tell. They're not going to be better than the Eagles next year.
Colin Cowherd
Right.
Fox Sports Analyst
Let's just be clear about that.
Colin Cowherd
They're not going to what?
Fox Sports Analyst
They're not going to be better than the Eagles in the division next year. They're going to be looking up at Phillips.
Colin Cowherd
I, I would just, I, I think Dallas is closer than you think. Oh I think their second round pick now healthy this past game against the Raiders all their young guys played.
Fox Sports Analyst
I like overstone but it's the Raiders.
Sophie Cunningham
Come on.
Fox Sports Analyst
They're a joke.
Colin Cowherd
They. You it's, it's, it's going to be very hard to run on Dallas going forward.
Fox Sports Analyst
That Eagles game this week is a big one and, and I think you're picks.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I like the hook. I'll take Dallas plus three and a half.
Fox Sports Analyst
Take a nibble on the money line maybe.
Colin Cowherd
Yes.
Fox Sports Analyst
Oh I like it. Final story Con let's go back to LeBron James and the Lakers. Listen, I know you're gonna bang on the usage rate that can't, can't keep up like that. He only had 11 points but he had 12 dimes. Look at that alley oop to Deandre Ayton. I mean that's just, that's just timing. Anyway, Here we go. Deandre Ayton loves playing with LeBron.
Joel Klatt
I was just telling him a fun fact. You know he threw me alley oop. I said that's my second alley from you. The first one was when I was in eighth grade at your camp.
Colin Cowherd
No, I think, I think J.J. redick has created a very smart spacing. It's a really good easy to watch a lot of different guys who can create space hit jumpers. They are a little bit redundant that will come into play as I mean if you watch that game last night, no physicality either side. Utah's the worst defense in the league. Lakers are a bottom. I mean it was wide open jumpers, easy layups had Lakers had 16 layups. That's. That was. It was. It felt like a. An intense scrimmage is what it felt like.
Fox Sports Analyst
That being said, first of all, Jake Laravi has been a revelation.
Joel Klatt
Really.
Fox Sports Analyst
I love that guy. Hey, Deandre Ayton, are you ready for this? Colin, he's shooting 69% from the field, all two pointers. I mean he's having you could argue the best season of his career. DeAndre Ayton Portland couldn't get rid of him fast enough. Phoenix was like we'll pay him. Oh my gosh, what the hell do we do? J.J. redick I know I'm gassing up the Lakers too much but there is a lot to love about what Redick has done and they only are now incorporating LeBron. What's the ceiling for you with this Lakers team and finals Western Conference Finals.
Colin Cowherd
No no, no, they don't. Listen, we know this about the NBA. Nobody plays a lick of defense until you get to the trade deadline in the second half. And the officials, you know, they call, they can call it tight. They want their stars healthy. The NBA opposite of the wnba, which lets you more small players in the regular season. So everybody's banged up for the playoffs. The NBA is the opposite. They quick whistle regular season. They want their stars healthy and then they want them healthy for the playoffs. Then the playoffs come around and they swallow the whistles and physicality. Fans love physical, tough, spirited, passionate basketball.
Fox Sports Analyst
Not all of us.
Colin Cowherd
It's. It's. Be careful about loving offensive minded teams. Now, if you are an offensive leaning franchise, this is your time to eat. Because nobody plays defense. So the good offensive teams look unstoppable. I mean, that game last night. 141 26.
Fox Sports Analyst
Yeah, listen, Utah's not quite there. I'll just say this about the Lakers, man. They. They can beat you in a lot of ways offensively once the defense comes around. And I, I don't know how it does with, you know, Reaves and Laravia. Luka, those are not three great defenders, but maybe they just beat you with offense, Colin.
Colin Cowherd
I don't know.
Fox Sports Analyst
I think they're gonna give OKC a lot of problems. Alex Caruso can't guard five guys. Okay.
Colin Cowherd
J. Mac with a noose. Well, that's the news.
Fox Sports Analyst
And thanks for stopping by the herd line news.
Colin Cowherd
I'm just so glad that Cam Scatterboo is okay after seeing that video from WWE on Monday Night Raw. I mean, that thing could have gone sideways. I mean, thank God for that security guard who fended off five large men fighting each other. I know everybody got worked up. I think we should all be very happy that Cam Scatterboo did not get hurt in that melee, which was. That thing was barnyard musical. I mean, it was just crazy. Back in a second. So I said hypothetical, obviously, but I do think a majority of the playoffs are set. I think Baltimore is going to make their way in. Let let's see on the Lions and the Chiefs, but I said let's do a little simulation here on if the playoffs started Today these would be the matchups and I started in the AFC where Denver has a buy and they've been great the last two years. They've been 12 and two at home. So they're going to be well rested with a brilliant offensive coach, a great defense at home. No thanks for whoever has to play Denver first. I would take in the wild card round Buffalo over Pittsburgh, massive quarterback advantage. And to be honest, when's the last time Pittsburgh beat a star quarterback in the playoffs? I can't remember it. I would take the Colts, a much healthier team at home. You know, maybe Indy goes on the road to a cold weather team, but at home they would beat the Chargers. Offensive line for Los Angeles is just not solvable. I do not trust Jacksonville going up to cold weather in New England. I would take the Patriots to win. When you go to the divisional round, this is the one that J. Mac pushed back on. I would take Denver at home over Buffalo. I think Buffalo is a team that you can manipulate. I think they could run the ball death by a thousand cuts, move the chains. And Buffalo, remember Bo Nix does not get sacked and moves well. I could see Buffalo's defense having real problems in that game and I there's. There's nothing to show me that Buffalo on the road against Sean Payton and a better roster. They. They're so Josh Allen dependent. I would take the Patriots over the Colts because again Daniel Jones on the road, a little regression and Drake Mays off the chain right now. I would take Denver at home. More playmakers, both offense and defense. You forget New England's supposed to be in a rebuild. Still, Denver is not in a rebuild. They have arguably the second best roster in the league. If you go to the nfc, some of these matchups, Philadelphia at home off a buy. I would take Seattle, a team that creates pressure. Better roster against Tampa. Baker struggles facing pressure. Passer rating at 46. I do think Seattle is a great road team with a better roster. Chicago Green Bay is a coin flip. I say this. Chicago has an identity. Green Bay doesn't. Chicago second in rush attempts, second in rushing. Crappy weather in Chicago or Green Bay wherever it's played. Big edge to the better run team. I would take Chicago ram San Francisco. San Francisco's defense is a shell of itself from two years ago. Rams big edge. This rivalry starts leaning LA in the last couple of years because the Rams have drafted the defensive side so well. Then you go to the divisional round in the NFC and these are really interesting games and they're tough. I would Take the Eagles over the Seahawks. Seattle is turnover prone. The Eagles induce turnovers. I would take the Rams easily over the Bears. A very balanced team. Playoff experience. Bears season ends probably the best playoff game so far of the year. I would take Rams, Eagles. I would take slight edge Rams. I think they're a more balanced team, a better run team. I just think they're more consistent and I think they'll finally get Philadelphia's number again. Very close game and then you go to a Super Bowl. And again, this is hypothetical because right now the Ravens, the Chiefs and the Lions are not playoff teams. Denver's the most penalized team in the league. The Rams last two years least penalized. The Rams make fewer mistakes. Their offense is more balanced. It's good early, middle and late. That would be a pretty easy pick for me. And then I think we could have the argument is Stafford all time better than Aaron Rodgers? That would be the argument. If he got his second super bowl because he was better early, better in college and he's now noticeably better late, it'd be an argument.
Fox Sports Analyst
I like that. Leading the charge, however, rotisserie chicken. I've got an issue with the Broncos being the number one seed. Colin, are you aware right now the Patriots are the favorites according to every sportsbook on the planet to be the favorites to get the number one seed? The New England Patriots, schedule wise, are going to get the number one. So Denver is going to probably be the two, and they're likely going to open with Buffalo, Baltimore or Kansas City. We, I think we would agree. The Chiefs are going to fall out or the Chiefs are going to jump in. The Chargers will fall out.
Colin Cowherd
I think.
Fox Sports Analyst
I think Denver's going to be one and done, dude.
Colin Cowherd
All right, well, I think Buffalo is got holes and I've seen it about four different times this year on their defense.
