Dustin Poirier
All right, so UFC 318 just ended and Max Holloway just beat Dustin Poirier in his retirement fight in New Orleans. It was a bittersweet fight. It was one of those fights that you, you wanted to see both guys win. Unfortunately, that's not how fighting or really any sports work. But Holloway wins. Two judges had it 49, 46. I thought that Was the right score. Dustin Poirier, obviously a little upset. Did not think so, but I thought Max did enough to get it done. A good back and forth start to the fight, but eventually Max Holloway at 155 looks like a different animal. And Dustin Poirier still has dog left in him, but I think it's the right time for him to walk away. Let's talk about it and what it means for the future of Max Holloway at this weight class. The breakdown. Let's go. So, like I said, this was a tough fight. Back and forth. Max Holloway, coming up to 55, this is his new weight class. Had success, obviously, in the Justin Gaiche fight. Really kind of outclassed Justin Gaethje the entirety of UFC 300. Then the big right hand, the, you know, historic viral knockout right there at the end as he pointed to the ground. He gets the BMF belt. And that moment was kind of the christening of this one. Because Dustin Poirier looking for someone to match up with in his retirement bout. Why not do it for the BMF belt? Why not do it in New Orleans at 155 pounds? So the date was set. Now Poirier coming into this, two wins over Max Holloway, one in 2012, which is crazy. That was before some of you were born. And the second one in 2019 in the interim title fight at 155, Dustin's actual only title win. Whether you want to call him a champion or not, I think interim titles can be a good thing for the sport. And honestly, I look at Dustin as a champion, even if he never held undisputed. And so the fight started, and Max Holloway, you know, coming into it, the. The keys, I thought, for the fight kind of played out in the way you thought the keys of this fight would. As the first round, he jumped on Dustin. Poirier got very busy with his hands, started with the body kicks as well. Was having that stomp to the knee implemented into Max's game. He's doing that more and more now, but it was a body kicks were just so cle lean from Max, just over and over working the body with that back leg kick. And then he was going variety. He was going hook, right hand. He was going jab to the body, right hand to the body. He was jab upstairs, hook upstairs. And then eventually, in the midst of all that variety in the body kicks and Dustin not really answering punches with punches or answering attack with attack, right? Looking for counters, Dustin just kept evading. And that would become a theme where Max Would attack and Dustin, instead of staying in the pocket, head movement or slipping off center line, looking to counter, would evade pressure, reset, then get back to the fray. I think that was one of the biggest differences in this fight, and one of the biggest reasons the fight ended up going Max's way completely was that Dustin was never willing to meet an exchange. It was only, let's reset my turn, your turn. I'm getting out of here. Reset my turn. I didn't like that for Dustin, but it was very effective for Max because he had no resistance on some of these combination punches. And in the first round, he stunned and shocked Dustin Poirier. Poirier hit him with a nasty hook right hand. It was one of his best go to's with the punches, Corral you with the hook, right hand down the pipe, drops Dustin and really had him hurt badly. And you wondered about the psychological effect of this whole thing. For Dustin Poirier, you know, it's his last fight. Lil Wayne was supposed to perform, doesn't able to, but he's walking him out. You know, he said this is the best cut he's ever made. He's got letters fans are sending him, they're making him read it before the fight, talking about, thank you for all you've done for me and your career. He's all emotional, no excuses. My point is, all of it comes to a point in this first round where I go, oh, my God, we may not even get out of the first three minutes of this fight. And that's how this is going to end. I thought Max was going to finish him in the first round. He. He almost did. But Dustin, you know, he's a veteran, he's savvy, he got back to his feet, he's tough as nails. Backed Max off a little bit and survived the round. But going into the second, that was a huge round for Max Holloway. And again, it showed you very quickly that Max was here to do what he said he was going to do, spoil the party, look to potentially get his name into the top three or four at lightweight. I think he's number four right now. And use this momentum to build toward a potentially a rematch with Ilya Toporia. All things going his way, and then the second round start. And in the second round, Max is having a ton of success again and again. It's all off that same unspoken agreement that they both have made now where Max is going to throw volume and Dustin is looking for one big shot. Honestly, it did look a lot like the first fight for Dustin Poirier. Because he looked to hit that switch that he hit on Max multiple times in the first fight where he would throw at a southpaw his backhand as a lead punch. Because Dustin, I don't know if you guys know, but it's pretty clear is not a natural southpaw. He is a right handed person fighting southpaw to have advantages and power in his lead hand. Look at a lot of the shots that Dustin hits people with that knocks them out. Benoit Saint Deny, Connor McGregor, the list goes on. It's his right hand and it's out of the southpaw position sometimes or it's out of that switch lead. Back hand, step forward, backhand now becomes the right hand. His powerful hand. Crack them with the backhand there. That's what usually he's able to put guys away with. And he was looking for that shot all throughout this fight because he hurt Max multiple times in their second fight with. And in the second round, sure as shit, Dustin Poirier found it. And he found it after Max Holloway had done well and gotten a huge lead in the second round because Dustin was so hesitant or because he would try to hit that switch coming into range and didn't really follow with anything. So Max was like cool. Double jab, right hand, kick to the body, left hook, push off and get back to where he was comfortable. And Dustin didn't have anything for him until Dustin got hit again, got tagged again, got wobbled a bit again in that second round, and knew potentially the only way to survive that round and get back into this fight was to bite down on that mouthpiece and bring the fight to Max Holloway. And he did that in that exchange. In the second round, he did that. And there was very few exchanges where he did that going forward. He had success in this fight. No doubt about it. Dustin had moments, he had success. He would land his backhand, he would land a nice powerful jab, his hook backhand. But he didn't have continued success like he did in this moment because he was unwilling to continue combination punching forward. He was unwilling to get back into that fray, into that firefight, into that trade. And I think I know why, and we'll talk about it at the latter part of this fight. But in that second round, they get into an exchange and Dustin hits him with a nasty right hand behind the ear and Max hits the floor. I was losing my mind, folks. This right here was potentially the moment where Dustin Poirier was going to win it in his hometown or close to it in New Orleans. He's from Lafayette. But he was going to do it. And instead of following up, and it wouldn't be Dustin Poirier if he didn't do this. But instead of following up, he jumps a guillotine. Don't be silly. Jump the gilly. He did it again. It was ill advised. He shouldn't have done it. He could have potentially finished Max there. But he only had a couple seconds left, jumped the gilly, Max popped his head out, Dustin tried to hit him with some more ground and pound. But that's the end of the round. I gave that round to Dustin Poirier slightly because Max did so much good work to begin. But that, that end of the round I thought was enough for him to come back and win that. But coming into the third round, you built some momentum there. If you're Dustin Poirier, you know what works. You just hurt Max by fighting him in close, by throwing a little caution to the wind and doing a little bit of dirty boxing inside close quarters combat. But the third round, Max got back to doing what he does best, Zach at his kick range. Anytime Dustin wanted to blitz, boom, kick to the body. Anytime Dustin came in without a jab. And he did this a lot out of the southpaw stance, he wanted to lead with his back hand, which would mean he would lean and lunge forward toward Max. And once you throw your back hand even out of orthodox or southpaw, you throw that backhand and you lean over that lead leg, you don't have another follow up unless you go with the lead hand behind it. Even then you don't have a follow up after that. The way Max throws, the proper orthodox stance, he's like cool, throw that one shot. Here's a double jab, right hand behind it. I can reset now. My hook right hand comes behind that body kick behind that. And it was just so repetitive that Dustin was getting caught off balance, overthrowing non committal on offense and Max would counter him. Whereas on the other side, when Max went first and he wanted to throw his combinations and he wanted to throw his 1, 2 or his hook right hand and Dustin could be there to potentially throw that backhand or hell, just answer with his own lead hook backhand, Dustin wouldn't stand, slide away, try to reset the action and get started again. I thought that was the biggest misstep that Dustin had in this fight was not committing fully to his offense. And then when Max committed fully to his Dustin, allowing him to do so without being punished for it, Max was punishing Dustin for being Non committal. Max was even punishing dusting for commit, but Dustin wasn't willing to do the same or just didn't have the ability to do the same or timing or just whatever. But that was the big difference in the fight to me that Max, when he wanted to be on offense, when he wanted to go first, was committed to it, knew what he wanted to do, knew what he wanted to get to, knew where his advantages were, how he was going to be successful, and did it. Dustin a little unsure. So I thought Max won the third round, I thought he won the fourth round. And I talked to you guys earlier in the video about why potentially Dustin didn't want to be where he could be most successful, which was in the pocket with Max Holloway in round five. We kind of get the reason for that. Listen, Dustin at this point, in my opinion, is down three rounds to one. He kind of needs the fifth round and really he needs a knockout to win this fight. And he had good moments. Again, singular shots, right? The backhand at moments, the low kick.
Dan Hardy
He.
Dustin Poirier
He completely abandoned the low kick, which I thought was so silly. You want to slow Max down, you want it. You want to cut down on his movement, you want to keep him in front of you, attack that low leg. But then again, there's always a counter for it. Max was doing a great job with his straight punches, so maybe doesn't want to get caught off balance. But that fifth round, you know, Max is doing his thing once again. He's winning the round. They get to that last 10 seconds and it's kind of rinse and repeat, but Max points right straight down to the ground right there. And Dustin obliges kind of, but only for a second. And this is when I started to realize now, again, it's. It's an unspoken. They spoke about it. They were like, you want to do it? It's Max's thing. Point to the ground. We're gonna have a swing off till the end. Although he didn't do that with Iliad Toporia. Granted, it was at the beginning of the fight, but Max gave him the old matador. I was like Ilya, a bit different. But Max points to the ground and Dustin obliges. But when they start throwing, you could see the hesitation from Dustin Poirier. He even looked to get double unders on Max at the end there. He didn't want any part of that because Max showed a superior hand. Spe. His volume is insane. He doesn't get tired and he's stronger now at 55. He hurt Dustin multiple times in this fight. That kind of answered the question for me when I said, why won't Dustin commit to his offense in the pocket? He clearly did not think he had the hand speed to keep up with Max there. He didn't want to stay there because the longer he stayed there, Max, eventually, with his short punches in close or if he was able to get back to his range and set up the hook, right hand, was going to catch Dustin. And that's fair. What it showed me was that tonight, and maybe since their last fight, Max has grown into the correct weight class, and he's added some things to his game that made it very difficult for Dustin Poirier.
Max Holloway
Right?
Dustin Poirier
His setups, his variety, not just with his punches, but his kicks to the body upstairs, showing different looks, the feints, the taunts, again, making you miss, making you pay, not trying to reset the action, but countering on top of you throwing and being fully committed to what he's doing. Max showed the best version of himself tonight, maybe that I've seen since his, you know, prime reign at 145. What he's been doing recently at the end of that Last run at 45, now moving to 55, this is like a second new wave for Max Holloway. He's been in the UFC for so long now. Same with Dustin. And I know this is a Dustin Poirier retirement thing, and we'll get to that, but Max deserves his credit. Here he is, revamped and revitalized his career to put himself in position now. I mean, he's right there with Justin Gaethje, a guy he just knocked out for cold not too long ago, and Armin Tsurukian in the number one two. And then you have Patty Pimlet in potentially that third spot, four spot, whatever. Those four guys are next up for Ilya. You can take your pick of the litter there. Sure. You know, you could say Armin Tsarukian probably deserves it. Justin Gaethje is right there as well. But personally, me, if you're asking, I mean, the Patty Pimblett fight I love, because there's. There's real animosity there, and there hasn't already been a definitive winner between the two of them. I mean, Ilya knocked out Max, so you can't just go, max's next. I would love to see Ilia, Patty. That's probably not going to happen, but if it did, and you made Max Justin, too, or, I don't know, maybe you do. Armen and Patty and Max and Justin. And then the winner of the. I don't know, but Max, the point is he's in a good position now to be amongst that next. Maybe not directly next for Ilya, but right after that next. Who's going to get Ilya after that? Max has put himself in a position there to be talked about and this is just a great win for him. Obviously there's no animosity there for Max and Dustin. And even after the fight they read the scorecards. 48, 47 and 49, 46. Dustin seemed to be upset with the scorecards, but when you look at the stats here, it isn't. You know, it's not a crazy thing to think. This is 49, 46 and you, I mean, shoot, the stats could even say that Max won every round. But you know, given, given Dustin that second round on the knockdown, Max clearly was the more active, the more accurate, the more just willing to deal damage. Fighter here, I mean, you look at the significant strike percentage and the total head, body, he had it all legs, he attacked everything. This was a Max Holloway bordering on dominant performance. You know, he got dropped in the second round, which is why you can't say that. But outside of that, this was, this was Max Holloway doing what he wanted to do to a T in this fight. And Dustin had moments. He was successful, very much so when he committed. But at the end of the day, it was Max's fight. But Max got on the microphone and gave his flowers to Dustin Poirier. You know, talking about how he is a legend in this sport and he is, he never was a champion, but he was right on the cusp of it. And again, he was an interim champion, one of the most, probably the best non champion in UFC history. I mean there's there's probably people that are going to pop up in, in your mind in the comments and let me know, but Dustin is right up there with them. You know, you talk about like the Donald Cerrone's or Alexander Gustafsons or people like that. I feel like Dustin had far more success than, than those guys did, you know, and again, I mean he was an interim champ. Could have been undisputed had had the belts gone differently and you know, the UFC had taken the belt that Habib had voluntarily already given up and said, all right, somebody else fight for it back in 2020. So Dustin got on the mic and thanked Louisiana. You know, he dropped his gloves, great tribute, they showed him a video and overall it was a touching moment for the diamond. He's done and I think he's gonna he, he said something about being a commentator or an analyst for espn, and if they allow him to do that, I think he's gonna do a great job. I. I really do. I sport well. He can talk well. I've seen him before on the panel desk stuff. But great career for Dustin Poirier, I'm glad to say. I. I got to watch a lot of it from when I started watching MMA in 2010, 2011. I got to see pretty much all of Dustin Poirier's run in the ufc. So that was pretty cool to see, man. So, yeah, great night of fights in the ufc, but the main takeaway is Max Holloway is revitalized at lightweight, and if he gets another shot at Iliad Seporia, I'll just remind people he. I watched that fight again the other day. He was looking damn good, was knocked out. Now, again, that doesn't mean that it wouldn't go the same way, because I think Ilia Toporia is the best boxer maybe I've ever seen in mma. And for him to be so reliant on it and so confident in it, and even being down two rounds, in my opinion, to Max Holloway in their first fight, he just has an it factor. Obviously he's a great grappler, but he has that confidence and that it factor in his boxing that he can shut your lights off and he has the skill to get there, even at a reach and height disadvantage. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to see it again. I think it's going to be some time and Max can potentially look for some, some top three matchups at 55. What do they do with him next? What happens with Dustin Poirier's retirement? Does he still stick around and do analyst work? And what does the UFC do moving forward? Because there's some interesting storylines going on. Saw Dana talking about the White House card. We're gonna make some videos on that this week. The point is, all these things I don't have an answer for, for all I know is that Max Holloway is revitalized second part of his career, potentially can, I won't say, be as good as his first, but can potentially lead to a Hall of Fame level potential, one of the greatest of all time levels, if he can grab another belt type careers. But Max looks super impressive and I'm just can't wait to see what he does next. So, great night of fights in the ufc. Max Holloway ruins the party for Dustin Poirier in New Orleans. But what happens next? I guess we'll find out. All right, so we are back on the way. Concept presented by the Ring. It's midnight and it's been a long day. I've been in Los Angeles, according with the MMA Casuals. I just announced that I will be on Misfits boxing on August 30 doing commentary for the the good folks over at Misfits. And today, the story that has just boggled my mind, it's been going on for the last couple of days, is the entire Daniel Dubois situation. And the story is rightfully, for the most part, been about Alexander Usyk, once again becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Second time he's done that. Third time he's become undisputed between cruiser and heavyweight, one of the greatest of all time, certainly the greatest heavyweight of this generation. That should be the story. Point blank period. Alexander Usyk wins and retains and becomes once again undisputed. Well, as in most sports, that usually is the lead story, but then there's the speculation and the rumor and the theory and then conspiracy and maybe in some cases, truth to the underlying story, which is what I'm going to talk about today. Daniel Dubois and the situation surrounding his fight day and his fight night. What do I mean? The breakdown. Let's go. All right, so for those that don't know, or maybe you do, I did a lot of research on Daniel Dubois today and I found out he's one of 11 children, that he was mostly homeschooled as a child, and that his father, Stanley, or I guess otherwise known as Dave, I think Dave is his real name, goes by Stanley, not really sure, was pretty much the reason that Daniel Dubois became a boxer. According to some stuff I've read, it goes all the way back to before Daniel was born and that his father had a vision that Daniel was going to be a world champion boxer and trained him to be that from the age of like four or five. These training sessions, even when he was four or five years old, would be pretty strenuous, to the point where Daniel Dubois had to do workouts that included him finishing the workout before food was even made, served at some point. And I'm only presenting this to you because Daniel Dubois, who is 27 years old now, again, is a grown man. We'll get to that in a second. But I'm giving you this information to show you that Daniel Dubois father is a massive part of his life, you could argue the biggest part of his life, even to this day, outside and inside a box. So it may not come as A surprise when I tell you that Daniel Dubois father, who does have a massive influence on him, made some very odd decisions that potentially affected Daniel Dubois ability to fight on Saturday night. And again, before I even start talking about this, I'm going to let you know, I don't think that anything we're going to say was going to effectively change the outcome of Saturday's fight between Daniel Dubois and Alexander Usyk. I think Usyk was going to beat Daniel Dubois no matter what shape or form or outside of the ring. Stuff happened to him and he showed up in. If Natal Dubois got in the ring with Usyk 100 times, I think Usyk would probably beat him 99 to 100 times. That's how good I believe Oleksandr Usyk is. Now that I've given my respectable Daniel and Alexander Usyk, I just want to talk about how stupid people that are around boxers can be. And I mean that 100% stupidity, selfishness and ego find their ways into famous athletes camps all the time. But Saturday was a particular level of stupid from the man that, like I said a second ago, influences Daniel Dubois the most. His own father. Let's take a look. This is by Daily Mail, and it is an article that entails a couple different things happening. Daniel Dubois had to, quote, walk into Wembley after chaotic journey involving dad's party and accreditation Nightmare before brutal KO by Alexander Usyk. Before we get into the walking part, which is just insanity, let's start with the part that was the topical news story as we came into fight day. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Daniel Dubois mere hours before he is about to fight Alexander Usyk. And you can tell because he's wearing the same shirt he entered the building in on Saturday night, the night he fought Usyk. Let's take a look at this video. See Daniel, look, he's smiling. Looks like he's having a good time. And, and, and listen, we'll get to Daniel's responsibility in this thing in a little bit. But like I said, smiling, having a good time, right? Ton of people around him. I think maybe he's entering the building somewhere. I don't know why there is a DMX cosplayer a part of the venue here. I don't know who this man is and why his teeth look like a saloon door opening up. But listen, no one's paying you to play DMX at their birthday party, buddy. Bounce again, you see here. And we're probably gonna get demonetized if I let keep letting it play. But look at all these people, guys Wearing a Los Angeles Angels hat in the middle of London. Guess it fits the fake Ralph Lauren. But as you can see, there are a ton of people gathered at Daniel Dubois house. Again, we talked about Daniel Dubois and how he was raised. Daniel Dubois still lives at his parents house. At 27 years of age, Daniel Dubois was homeschooled. If you've watched Daniel speak in public, there's a clear delineation from social interactions and the way that he approaches conversations and how he responds to questions. I'm not going to make accusations on a man's personal life, but from what I can see, Daniel Dubois does seem to struggle with a lot of social interaction. So knowing that and the fact that he has not been formally schooled, that he's schooled by his father, protected by his father, raised by his father, why on God's green earth would his father or anybody on their team think that this is a good idea to have? Well, as again, you'll see here dozens upon dozens of people just around Daniel at his house with music blaring, people having drinks. It's a party. It is a party. And I know what Don Charles got on talksport yesterday and said it was a gathering, not a party. Bullshit. A bunch of people that had no business being at that house, by the way, a bunch of that Daniel Dubois didn't even seem to know as according to actually the. The report was done by the Times. I apologize as I'm gonna read an excerpt here from this, this article. It states a few hours earlier, in the opposing locker room, the contrast could hardly have been starker. Daniel Dubois had not arrived to Wembley until 8.20pm on Saturday, less than 90 minutes before he was due to make his ring walk again. We'll get to the party, but. But just the interlude to that. You have an hour and a half before you're about to make your walk. And I'm not saying you have to be at the venue all day, but every sports event I've ever been at, I'm not there an hour and a half before the game starts. Because that's usually when we're about to let the fans in. You know, the people that are going to sit there and watch you do your thing, not the people that are going to actually go and fight each other. The warmup, the acclimation process, being there, grounded with your team, the warm up, everything needs to be planned out. And it's not usually planned out for you to get there, try to warm up and then make your walk all in the matter of 90 minutes. Before you're about to do it. That point of consternation gave way to a madcap fight day when Stanley hosted a party for dozens of his friends. Notice Stanley Dua's dad hosted a party for dozens of his friends at the family mansion in Essex, where Daniel still lives in the afternoon. Source claims dubois, a reclusive character despite the spotlight of the profession his father guided him toward, did not know all of the guests well and left at one stage for a drive. So let me get this straight. The father that put so much importance into teaching discipline to his son, so much importance into keeping him away from the public eye, so much important into controlling every aspect of his life, I mean, from what everything I've been reading here, seems decides to put his son, who is clearly not great, again, in social interactions around the father's friends, not even the son's friends, to the point where Daniel himself gets so uncomfortable on the day of his fight with so many people around that he has to get in the car and drive around just to get away from that and keep himself locked in or keep his mind at ease. We thought that was a winning strategy. And before the people start in the comments section or wherever telling me they did this for the AJ fight, Wade, I heard that. I heard that story when this started coming out, that this is what they did for the AJ fight. And you don't rock the boat if it's working. I'm sorry, exceptions do not make the rule just because here chaos happens and Daniel is such a good boxer and rose to the occasion when the AJ fight happened. And despite all of these things, these. These weirdo distractions that no one in his position should be subjected to, especially with his demeanor and his personality. Despite all of that, he's able to succeed. Doesn't mean that's a formula for success. It means that Daniel Dubois on that night against AJ was great in spite of all the bullshit that happened to him either the week of or day. Because I heard that clip from Don Charles on Talksport Today talking about, well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, or that's the same formula we've been using it. Not saying it's for everybody, but it works for us, clearly. Yeah, clearly works because he won the AJ fight. Absolutely moronic to think that's the formula for success. I'm just. I'm fired up because it frustrates me. Clearly, Daniel's dad has an important role in this entire thing because he's put himself in control of everything and decides to. I Don't know, do whatever this is. On the day of his son's fight, knowing it's the biggest fight of his life. It's just mind boggling to me that this can happen. Daniel Dubois, any professional. But we're not done yet. Let's keep going. The source claims their departure was delayed after Stanley requested extra people carriers to bring his entourage to the venue. He then drove Daniel to the venue himself, which caused another administrative issue as only the designated vehicles had been accredited. They then walked to the stadium entrance on foot from the car park. But a video clip shows Stanley calling Daniel towards the door after security attempted to prevent some of his friends from entering. The source alleges Stanley essentially told them Daniel would not proceed without them. Again, this is just a one side source claiming this, but it doesn't seem like there'd be a need to to lie about something like this. And there's pretty excruciating detail for someone to lie about. But not only does Daniel's dad stage a party hours before, not like in the morning. Hey everybody, thanks for coming up. Hours before the fight is meant to be scheduled in an environment Daniel is so unfamiliar with and he's clearly not comfortable in. To the point where Daniel himself asks his father to leave and drive around for a bit. Then they come back. They're further delayed because Stanley needs his entire entourage. Again, not Daniel's entourage, not the the actual world champions entourage. The dad of the world champion needs his entourage to be escorted to the venue by the service vehicles that are supposed to escort Daniel Dubois to the venue. The father, all controlling, takes Daniel Dubois to the venue, just him and Daniel. A park like where the peep the fans park and walk to the front door of the stadium. And then Daniel is going to get finally in his dressing room and is called back to the front by his D. So that his dad can essentially tell the the people working the gate that if they don't let this entourage of Daniel's dad in, that Daniel Dubois himself will not be fighting on the night. Excuse me. What an absolute load of shit. I don't have any words for how nonsensical, selfish and ego driven Staniel Dubois. Staniel. That's what I called him because it's midnight here. Stanley Dubois is in this situation making it all about him. When his son, all the things he taught his son, all the things they sacrificed, all the things Daniel sacrificed and listened to his father for throughout his life. To get to that point, trusting his father and his father, putting him in the worst position possible on the day he's supposed to go and fight. And yes, I'm making a big deal about this. And again, I don't think that it ultimately would have changed what Usyk was going to do to Daniel Dubois on Saturday night. Because Usyk is an all time great. Just like I said in my video a couple of days ago, Daniel Dubois started the fight, okay, did what I think he was supposed to do, to try to at least mix this fight up a little bit and have some modicum of success. The problem is it didn't matter. It didn't matter what Daniel Dubois did on that night. Usyk is just better in every aspect of fighting. It's Usyk, he beats everyone. But it's not even about that. It's about the preparation. It's about the mindset of the people around Daniel Dubois that allow this kind of stuff to happen, to not put him in the best position possible. His mindset and just the scheduling and all these external things happening that he either has to deal with or he's part of or he's trying to get away from again. I hate doing this because I've only, I don't, I'm not a world champion fighter. I never will be, haven't experienced it on that level and I don't understand any of to that degree. But even me, one little fight that I've had and it was on misfits, my coach, BJ Flores, my best friend Sensei and my cut man, Jacob Chavez. Even my girlfriend and my mother would not allow me when I was in Manchester, be put in an environment that I was not familiar with, wasn't comfortable in, was going to put more stress on me before I even fought. Anything that happened to me during fight week was handled by my team and it wasn't even brought to me. All it was for me to do is to be there for my training sessions, be there for my weight cut and be there ready to go in the positions I need to. I definitely wasn't driven to the venue by my coach. We were taken in the vans and the places and the things that were provided from misfits from the Zone to make sure things ran in an orderly fashion. And guess what? I could focus on my fight. And that's at the influencer boxing level, not the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world. That's utterly ridiculous. Where Daniel Dubois is currently, to me is a struggle between whether he wants to box for him, whether he wants to be world champion for him, whether he still enjoys and loves this sport, or whether he's doing what his father is telling him to do because that is what has always been. And his goal has been his father's goal for him, because that was what's always been. And I think Tony Bellew said it best. And we're going to play his excerpt here from Talksport when he talked about Daniel Dubois and what happened after the second USYK knockdown. Listen, he took two big time shots back to back in that same round, and it didn't look good for Daniel Dubois. I mean, I don't know how many times that, that, you know, people that are saying he quit, how many times it would take for them to feel like the fight was over because he was getting battered, the mouthpiece came out, he got tagged with the left hand, so. And yeah, and most of them are pro boxer saying this, so. So I'll take their word for it. But the point I'm trying to make is, regardless whether you think he quit or had more in the tank and just didn't want to get up, the question I want to ask is why and what's next? Here's Tony Bellew.
Tony Bellew
I feel so sorry for Daniel because I just think he's a lad who's so regimented in his ways. He gets into fantastic shape. He's a proper machine, guys, and he's had a really good career. But I just think the question needs to be asked, why are you. What. Who are you boxing for? Why are you doing this? And is it to impress someone? Is it to get on the. Keep on the good side? I don't know what it is, because he ain't fighting for money, guys. The boy's financially secure. He was financially secured a long time ago, to be totally honest, and I know that for a fact. So you'd have to ask the question of why is it because when he gets into these really hard moments in fights, that's when the real Daniel comes out and the real Daniel doesn't want to fight.
Dustin Poirier
That's when the real Daniel comes out and the real Daniel doesn't want to fight. I don't know how much Tony Bellew, who is close with Daniel, I'm not sure. And he has had some really tough moments. The, the Dubois first fight, the Joe Joyce fight, this fight. But then he's also had tough moments. He's come through, right? He's come through some tough moments in his career, notably the. The AJ fight. Even though he was winning that fight, he had a moment there where AJ could have turned the tide and Daniel said no, I guess that leads me back to the point of this entire video, is that Daniel Dubois, in this situation, has to make a decision. And honestly, Daniel Dubois right now needs to be an adult. He is 27 years old. And I understand the dynamic is not a normal one with him and his father and his career and his upbringing and everything, but he needs to decide what it is he wants, right? Because Daniel Dubois has some physical gifts, and he's 27 years old, and he still, you know, hasn't maybe even hit his prime as a heavyweight boxer, still can take this loss. And I've been a big proponent of the O doesn't meet as much as you guys think can be a very, very good heavyweight boxer. There's still so many good fights out there for him, but he has to want to do it. And honestly, you know, from the outsider perspective, this is easy for me to say, but he has to grow up a little bit, because I do fully blame his father for the decisions his father made on Fight Day. The party, getting to the venue, the driving there, the. The trying to threaten security with my son's not going to fight tonight. The. The trying to coach over Don Charles in the corner. Just a pure chaos, an ego trip of. Of whatever this has been for how long it's been going on. I say it's the AJ fight, maybe it's even before that, but this clearly doesn't work. And why would it? It's absolute nonsense to think that that kind of chaos on Fight Day, let alone what's going on before Fight Day. This is just the. The day of that doesn't work. Daniel Dubois, he needs to in this moment, and he probably should have then put his foot down as a grown man and say, dad, this is. This is not your career, it's mine. Because it's pretty clear to me that Stanley Dubois, living vicariously through his son, having parties on behalf of his son before the son even goes and accomplishes the goal. Because look. Look what I created. He's right there. Look what I did. I made this. No, no. Daniel Dubois made him what he is. Daniel Dubois put that work in. And I'm not trying to take anything away personally from Daniel's dad and the situation and again, the love they have and the relationship and all of that. I'm sure Daniel's dad is a fantastic dad and raised him to be a great man and all of that. There comes a time where you have to separate family from business, when the family is intruding, is hampering, is potentially ruining what you can do. In your professional life and may bleed into your personal life. We've seen it in boxing so many times. It just doesn't work. The father son thing, it just doesn't because eventually it becomes more about me, me, me. And look what I created. You, then you, you, this is your time. So I guess that's where I'm going to end this video. Daniel Dubois got to grow up. He's 27 years old. There's nothing wrong with still living at home with your parents if that's your family dynamic. There's nothing wrong with having your dad be a part of your business. But even with all of that, there has to be a level of understanding For Daniel. That means standing up and saying, this is my operation. If you want to be a part of it, you're going to do things my way, my career, my livelihood, my decision. That means a decision time. So what will Daniel do next? I don't have those answers. Just had to rant on the entire Daniel Dubois situation because it's sad because Daniel doesn't need to be dealing with any of this. Really Just lost the biggest fight of his life. He needs to be able to regroup and get his mind back together and get back to. To whatever it is he wants to do. If he wants to be a top level heavyweight, then get back to that. Who knows what could happen down the line. I assume Usyk's gonna beat Joseph Parker. Cava Joseph Parker fight. Kabiel sits there. Hell, Moses Atama is going to make his way up to the top parts of heavyweight soon. Daniel will be there. Hopefully if he makes the right decisions, grows up a little bit and treats his career like it's his and not his daddy. That's what I got to say. Appreciate you guys for watching what happens next with Daniel Dubois. I don't have those answers, but guess we'll find out. All right, so we are back on the way. Concept presented by the ring. I'm so excited for this video today. I don't even want to waste time. Misfits 22 press conference and first kind of meeting between all of the big names on this card went down today. If you guys didn't know. I'm also back on Misfits. I'll be commentating this card on August 30th. This feels like Misfits is back, and I know we say that a lot, but this one really feels that way. I'm coming back to commentate. We have Darren Till, Luke Rockhold. In the main event, we have Tony Ferguson. It's Tony Time versus Saul Poppy. In the co main, we have Dylan Danis, probably the most hated man in combat sports on this card. This one feels special. And this press conference did not disappoint. No more wasted time. Let's get into it. What just happened? Misfits 22 presser was probably one of the more entertaining ones I've seen in a long time. What do I mean? The breakdown. Let's go.
Max Holloway
Welcome everybody to London to Glazers Hall. This is a really, really interesting.
Dustin Poirier
Oh, we got Dan Hardy leading the presser again. Great move from Misfits. You know what they're doing, they're doing and I don't. It's not a comparison, but this is a good thing. They are garnering the eyes of the MMA scene. Look at three of the four guys in the main and co main event of this card. Darren Till, Luke Rockhold and Tony Ferguson. MMA legends or at least big names in mmaland. Not at this press conference. We'll be on this card.
Max Holloway
Welcome Numero.
Dustin Poirier
Numero. Let's go.
Max Holloway
And we have Numero's opponent. I can't believe I'm saying this. Joey Essex in the house. Looking in incredible shape already.
Dustin Poirier
See, Joe, this is the thing. Joey Essex does have a pretty big fan base in the uk. Listen, I don't understand Love Island. I've never watched the show. My girlfriend loves it. Apparently the UK loves it. Hell, even the US now loves this show. And the people that are on it have massive followings. I mean, the only thing I can compare it to is like reality TV in the early 2000s here in the US with like Jersey Shore and, and, you know, whatever else, the real world. But this guy has got a big following. This is what you do. This is what influencer crossover boxing should be. You have MMA fighters grabbing that fan base. You have Numero, who's a big time Portuguese influencer, and then you have maybe not on the YouTube influencer side, but the reality TV show all on one card. Brilliant.
Max Holloway
Next up, we've got Salt Papi. Awesome. Really looking forward to this fight.
Dustin Poirier
Yeah, man. Salt Papa.
Max Holloway
And UFC royalty, Interim light lightweight champion of the world, El Kakuy. Tony Ferguson in the house.
Dustin Poirier
It's a man right there. You know, Dan Hardy is so pumped to see Tony. Listen, there's two ways that this thing's gonna go. Like, there is a real opportunity for Salt Poppy to bury Tony Ferguson here and make a name off of him. But again, as bad as Tony has looked in the ufc, we really don't Know what it looks like to him when he comes to bo. I don't think it's going to be much different. Maybe it is. And maybe I'm the one being a hater. I'm not trying to say I don't believe in Tony. It's just when you see something, reality has to set in. And your eyes aren't lying to you when you watch Tony fight. But if Tony is able to turn back the clock, then good for him. And this is an opportunity for him to create a second life in his combat sports career. Right? I mean, he is now. I think he's 40 or 41. But you've seen people leave the UFC and have good careers after it, right? You see that with Mike Perry, you see it with Darren Till, you see it with Ben Rothwell, you see it with some of these other guys that have flourished outside of the ufc, mostly in bare knuckle. But we'll see if Tony can do it in boxing.
Max Holloway
The main event, Luke Rockhold, Darren Till. Welcome to both. Up onto the stage. Luke Rockhold first.
Dustin Poirier
Luke Rockhold. Oh, my God, he's got the blonde hair. I know. Darren Till is about to let off shots at this man.
Max Holloway
Who do I start with? Who do I start with? Tony Ferguson. That's what I'm starting with. Tony, talk to me about this process of getting offered a fight, a boxing match, accepting it, and then finding out who the opponent is.
H
I've always wanted to box, wasn't allowed to box. Pop said, you're gonna find a sport and he's gonna take you into college because I'm not paying for that shit. So all jokes aside, I've been hitting speed bags since I was 15 and wanted to box for a very long time. I grew up wrestling, wearing wrestling shoes, and now I fought for a long time MMA without wrestling shoes. And everybody wanted me to take, take me down. I've always been a multi sport athlete and this is another way for me to be able to go out there and test my athleticism against another person who's game to be able to sign on the dotted line. So much appreciate on that one for me to be able to go out and earn this victory.
Max Holloway
And so Papi, of course, KSI is hyped.
Dustin Poirier
They suck in love here in Tony Talk. Dude, sometimes the story gets convoluted and it goes to different places, but you could tell he's so dead serious and locked in when it comes to fighting. And it is a good point. Like he hasn't fought in shoes for forever. He'll be able to, you know, hide in shoes now in boxing, but. But let's see how the actual skills translate. We've seen Tony for years, you know, practicing winchon and. And yeah, even some boxing by itself and wrestling on the side. But let's see how specifically boxing. Because listen, as much as Salt Poppy's a tiktoker, an influencer, dangerous, and he's been training specifically boxing for at least the last six to seven years. Some rumor before that maybe, but still, he's a dangerous dude. I don't care what you've seen on TikTok or whatever, is a real dangerous fight for Tony and a massive opportunity for Salt Pop.
Max Holloway
It must be a bit surreal for you. Must have sat and watched Tony Ferguson spinning elbows, taking people's heads off. What's it feel like to now be lined up to fight him?
Dustin Poirier
I mean, the first thing I want to thank God, I want to thank the media, everyone that came to support. I want to thank Misfit Boxing KSI for giving me this opportunity and also Tony for accepting the fight. This a very opportunity for me to showcase my skills and yeah, it's gonna be a hell of a fight. August 30th.
H
Tune in.
Dustin Poirier
Tuning. Yeah, tune in.
Max Holloway
August 30th. All right, next up, numerous.
Dustin Poirier
We weren't. You didn't think that we were gonna get a back and forth between Tony and Salt Poppy. I. I didn't expect that out of this press conference. It's more so just Tony being there. That's the surreal kind of like, holy shit factor of this. So that's about what I thought we'd get, is some respectful Salt Poppy and Tony just. Just outlining what it is he's there to do.
Dan Hardy
Yeah. First of all, I want to thank everyone for being here and I want to show huge respect for everyone that's going to step in the ring. I'm excited to fight Joey. I heard he's in. Is he has family in the.
Dustin Poirier
In the.
Dan Hardy
In boxing. And I think you should take your glasses off and let us see your eyes. I'll take him off when I want to take him off, mate. Okay. Can you do it now? Because if you're gonna. If you're gonna wear glasses for a couple of bruises, you might need a. Like a welding garment after the fight.
Dustin Poirier
Okay. First off, numero speaking English. We applaud that for the English fans, for the people that are watching Misfits. And obviously he's got his massive Portuguese fan base, but one of the things that was always tough about, like, you know, Winterson Nunes, for example, is he didn't speak English, so you couldn't get a lot of back and forth out of him. Numero speaks English. And he's telling, joey, take those stupid ass glasses off. Because if you're scared of a little bruises, that's why you're wearing the glasses now. Now, you might need a welding helmet after I'm done with you.
Dan Hardy
Let's see. I'm very excited to fight Joey, and I'm here to represent my country, Portugal. Seem like you're shitting yourself, mate. What? Yeah, bro. It's not my main language, you know. Just relax, boy. Yeah, I think you should relax because this is not Love Island. This is boxing. I got my glasses. I'm chilling, bro.
Dustin Poirier
Like, what? Oh, hold on a second. Oh, hold on a second. Now, granted, people wear sunglasses inside all the time in combat sports, but it looks like it's pretty clear that Joey Essex has got some. Some bruising going on. But I like the back and forth. I like it.
Dan Hardy
That's okay. That's okay, bro. Yeah.
Max Holloway
Hey, Joey, I was watching you backstage before you got changed.
Dustin Poirier
Okay, There you go. Let's see.
Max Holloway
Feeling lively right now, man.
Dan Hardy
Come on. Boom.
Max Holloway
What's the feeling ahead of this? You said you feel like you've got inside his head already. You feel like you're going to be able to have his number.
I
Do you know what?
Dan Hardy
I didn't realize it would take this quick for him to crack.
Dustin Poirier
Oh, my God. He's gotten tuned up a little now, again, you can look at this a couple different ways. He's committed, he's locked in, and, you know, he's going through the rounds. He's doing the hard sparring. He's getting himself prepared. But, yeah, those look fresh. I mean, that could be stuff from today, to be honest with you, because it's not. It's not like, black and blue yet, but it's definitely. His eyes are puffed out, so take it how you want to receive it. Pause. But Joey Essex is doing some hard sparring. You could tell I'm excited.
Dan Hardy
And, yeah, this is. We'll see what happens. But, yeah, just let him keep talking what he wants to say in it.
Max Holloway
Getting fired already. All right, let's go to the main event. So, Luke into boxing against Darren Till, someone that you're very familiar of as a mixed martial artist. Did you watch his foray into boxing? Were you impressed with his hands?
Dan Hardy
I paid attention to the kid.
Dustin Poirier
He's.
Dan Hardy
He's done all right.
Dustin Poirier
Yes, dude. Okay, Luke is already coming with that like, like, little bro attitude toward Darren Till. And Luke is known for kind of doing this, especially in his MMA days. He would ego a lot of guys, like, hey, listen, this kid is not on my level. Da, da, da. That's kind of how he approached fights until the second Bisping fight where things kind of changed. And he did that to Bisping too. But I, I can just see it, the way he's like, smirking and stuff. This is Luke's game. I love it.
Dan Hardy
He's always got his mouth open and his chin in there.
I
But you haven't, you haven't.
Dan Hardy
Shut your ass up and wait your turn, mate.
Dustin Poirier
Oh, my God. Even added the mate on the. Okay. Luke been taking some trash talking, you know, I'm saying, some trash talking lessons.
I
Patty little, Patty little boom Patty.
Dan Hardy
Darren stepped away, he ran away from the game and, and he.
I
You got fat and now you've come to my game to get paid. You fought, I know, fought a couple.
Dan Hardy
Bums and you got a little confidence. But I'm gonna, I'm gonna bring you back down to earth, mate.
I
No, you need to come back down to the air. The biggest ego in the room.
Dustin Poirier
See what I'm saying? This is what I'm talking about again. Darren came through MMA like right after. Luke had been a champion at 85 and had, you know, at one point, looked unstoppable as a champion. People forget, man. Luke Crockold at one point was a monster at 185 pounds and really no one had the answer for him. Freaking one arm guillotine Bisping at a certain point. And then, you know, after that, that short notice fight versus Bisping, where he was just, you know, I'm king shit. This guy don't even deserve to be in the Octagon. And Bisping knocked him out, things changed a little bit. But yes, this is what I was talking about. Luke's got a bit of a, you know, he's. He's cocky, he's brash. There nothing wrong with it. You know what I'm saying? He used to be able to back it up. Even still, you know, he. That Paulo Costa fight, he was in there swinging. He goes and does bare knuckle against Mike Perry, which Dare Till's calling a boom. But that's. That's a good read from Darren. This is like kind of how Luke operates.
I
What are you on about me? We've just had this out of stairs. You can't chat to me because Petty's a bum and you backed out like to with him. Are you even trying to me right now? And you're talking. You're talking fat this that. You're just a vein. You're just all about the muscles, mate. Luke, you know that. You're too prideful.
Dan Hardy
I can find out every time.
I
You're already doubting yourself with me. You're already down. I know you don't.
Dan Hardy
You're studying every move I make.
I
Well, obviously everything.
Dan Hardy
Everything.
I
You should be studying everything.
Dan Hardy
You've been asking everyone questions.
I
Are you messing.
Dan Hardy
I know who you are. I can see who you are.
I
You don't. We won't even leave FC at the same time. Are you on? Are you. Are you all right? Mate, you gotta put.
Dustin Poirier
Did you hear what Darren said to him? He said I've already psychologically destroyed you. You're already doubting yourself. Very interesting. The mind games have already started between these two.
I
Have you seen that? And shoot the boulder head. You going keeps it up with that. With your chin, mate. Your chinny. Three things that are going to lose you this fight.
Dan Hardy
70 pounders.
Dustin Poirier
Luke's making a decent point about Darren getting knocked out by Jorge Masvidal. Although Darren should not have been at 70 when he was doing that. It was. It looked like a brutal weight cut. But Darren says, I'm going to take three things from you. Your pride, your ego and your chin after this fight. This is. This is nice back and forth. But Darren calling Luke Rockhold chinny. I mean he got dropped by Bisping, got dropped by Jan Blachowicz, obviously the Mike Perry bare knuckle. I really look at that bare knuckle thing as it's completely different. There's no padding on those hands. I think anybody can get hurt and clipped and rocked in bare knuckles knuckle. Which is what makes Mike Perry the king of the bare knuckle. Right? He was not technically stylistically a good boxer. Stand up fighter at the highest level of mma. And obviously when he came over to boxing, Jake Paul messed him up as well. But in bare knuckle, you can even the playing field by being a little tougher and just having a chin. And that's kind of how he beat Luke. Luke hit him with some big time stuff in that fight and he just walked through it all.
I
Have you? Petty was a 155 and Harry didn't do nothing. And bear in mind, Petty's a bu. Pet's just a crap. We're talking about bar box and P. What's the difference, mate?
Dan Hardy
That's a big difference.
Dustin Poirier
He's TR made again, Lou, mate, what difference.
Dan Hardy
You've been offered many times when he.
I
Was putting it on you.
Dan Hardy
Hey, you've been offered many times put it on you.
I
You yourself, you backed out and you've got a knack of doing that. You back out of fights and it's.
Dan Hardy
I'll tell you what. I'll tell you what.
I
I know you're proud and how much you love yourself. If you would have b a chocolate. You eat yourself, mate. I you. Are you joking?
Dan Hardy
Hey, Like Oscar de Hoya wearing tights.
I
In the box in California. You're up to all that crap. I've got nothing else to do with Train and you about me.
Dan Hardy
You seem to believe I'm not. I'm not working for this man.
I
No, I know you're working.
Dan Hardy
I'm putting the work in and you will understand.
I
45 like you're working, but your body's shutting down. I'm 32.
Dan Hardy
You're 32 going on 36.
I
How. How what? Cuz I've got a bit of belly on me. You should. What the lifestyle. That's a lifestyle.
Dan Hardy
Lifestyle.
I
Get your lifestyle. You're worried about how you.
Dustin Poirier
Darren is so wound up. Holy. He is wound. The up. He either two things are happening. Darren is just fired up to beat Luke and he feels like again, this is his moment. He is coming into his own in misfits or, you know, this is. I mean, he was. He was fired up about the. The Tommy Fury fight and he kind of acted the same way. But the other side of it is, you know, I don't know, maybe there is some apprehension about fighting Luke. I'm not sure. I. I tend to look at it and think Darren just fired the. The up to go and beat up Luke Rocco. I don't think it'll be that easy, especially from what I'm hearing. Listen, Luke is training out here in Orange County. I'm actually going try to get a training session with him in a couple of days. You guys might see that video next week. I'm gonna see firsthand how good Luke looks right now. And I already know what I get from there until I got to see it firsthand when I was on his card and I got to see it the next time out. Like Darren is transitioned to boxing very well. Luke never a great boxer, so there's going to be a lot of ground to make up. But his back and forth, he said, you're 32 going on 56. There's like, what? Well, because I got a little fat on me. That's a terrible scouser, but I'm trying.
I
And you're proud, and it's gonna get you hit, and it has got you hit.
Dan Hardy
I'm ready to fight, man.
I
I know you might be ready to fight, but you're. You're over here, like, giving me all kinds of that. I can't fight. I prompt. Look, listen to what I'm saying. I am gonna obliterate you on the tated, and you know it upstairs. I've seen it. But, yeah, you were confident when I walked in, and when I walked out, you were calling people from back home. Like, I need my. I need to make.
Dan Hardy
Calling people you. Yeah, I'm calling you, calling everybody, trying to figure out everything you can to build your confidence.
I
What you do.
Dan Hardy
I'm gonna put you down.
I
You don't live this lifestyle. You skateboarding in California about how you lost the ladies. But then again, with the ladies, you're not even that good, are you? Look what he's done to them. Leave Arthur, like, she's off it. Do you know what I mean?
Dustin Poirier
Oh, my God. Darren Till is going crazy. Darren Till is soul reading Luke Rockhold right now. He said, listen, you say, I don't live this lifestyle. You're out there skateboarding in California, which I don't know that he's doing that, but he. He's trying to hit some, like, actual personal points. He's like, yeah, all you care about is how you look. You're calling people back home worried. And then Luke tells him, like, oh, yeah, well, you're trying to find out what I'm doing. He's like, damn right I am. And I wouldn't doubt. Now, I don't know anything, but I wouldn't doubt that Darren Till would have some people he's close to that are training around or alongside Luke Rockhold. Because Khamzat Chimaev is out here in Orange county training in the same gym as Luke Rockhold is right now. Not to say that Khamzat would be, like, telling or whatever, but him and Darren have a great relationship, and they always have. Since Darren went out and trained with Khamzat, he cornered Hamzat in one of his fights. Just saying Darren knows people and knows what's going on. Probably because he's good friends with all the people that are training with Luke. Very interesting. And then, by the way, the most under the radar shot that was just thrown there, he was like, yeah, you're doing it for the ladies. Yeah, you're doing it for the ladies. And then he says, he says, well, maybe you don't have as great a success with the ladies because we seen what you did to Demi Lovato her right up. Luke, fight back.
Max Holloway
Luke.
I
Hey, what. Hey, you run, you pick your ladies, man. Look where you.
Dan Hardy
Hey, how's your lady in Brazil?
I
My lady's fantastic, mate. Say hello. There she is.
Dustin Poirier
That was a good one from Luke. There you go. He said, how's your lady in Brazil, Darren? Till I, I don't know if they were ever like married, whatever. Had a girlfriend in Brazil, had a daughter I think with this girl and had her tattooed on his arm for the longest time. Oh, this is so good. And then a couple of years ago, he got it tattooed over with a gorilla look, he got a gorilla face tattooed over the, the girlfriend in Brazil and he just showed it to Luke and said, there she is, say hi to her.
I
This is my press conference. Hey, KSI was my daddy for the Tommy press conference where you can say now I'm no daddy. Three main events. Yeah, look at KSI because we're, we're in partnership. Me, KSI, moms, what WhatsApp group. Let's get this soft Luke over. Come on.
Dustin Poirier
Well, Colin, KSI, your daddy's crazy. I know. He's talking about like, hey, KSI was, was the man when I first came in. Now KSI and I are in partnership. You know, I'm getting to that level. To come out and be like KSI was my daddy, it's crazy. Darren's on a heater though, man. He's talking his.
I
We'll give him 150 grand. Dollars. Bear in mind, you know, he needs the dollars back home and he'll be happy with it, Dave. That's it, that's all I'll be happy with.
Dan Hardy
Putting you face down and taking that. What's next?
Max Holloway
Did you ask for this fight or.
Dan Hardy
Was this fight I want to box? Boxing is things the one of I want to do and, and obviously they offered me this, this bare knuckle boxing match. It's not what I wanted to do, not what I was interested in, but it was a nice, nice paycheck and it was a learning process and you know, this is, this is what I want to do. I realized it was a dumb thing, but boxing is something I've done boxing that I've, I've trained, I'm comfortable with. I've been in there a million times with some of the best guys in the world and Darren's about to find out I can box.
I
I had not, you Know you, you were a ghost fight force. I was a young boy watching it. 6 UFC sick. Like you're over here giving me all kinds of that. I can't fight. I'm one of the best strikers in the world. Yeah, look who I fought in the ufc. Like, you're a great striker, but look what I've fought like. Look at the strikers. I've had a feeling because even though he tapped me out, he. He's just. He's a bum on the feet. He's a bum just like Perry. So you're over here disrupted, but I respect you as a fighter, Strike Force. And I was a fan of your seat, but you're coming in with this cocky confidence that I'm some kind of home. Well, because I've got belly on me, mate. What? I can fight. And that's all it is to it.
Dustin Poirier
Darren is fired the up, man. This is like. I think this is Darren wanting not only to prove to Luke that he is on the same level or better as a striker, as he says, but I think this is Darren wanting to prove to Darren that he can take down. Like, he doesn't look at this as a boxing match versus Luke Rockhold. He looks at this as a fight versus a former UFC champion. Because I think Darren, in his mind, still looks at himself as an MMA fighter, even though he's boxing right now. And anytime he gets to challenge himself versus a guy that held gold in a promotion that he didn't, this is a step up to him, right? Darren Stewart was not a step up. Anthony Taylor, not a step up. This, to him, is a step up because of Luke's accolades in the shared sport they had. This is why I think he's so fired up. Just like when Tommy and him were going to fight, it was a step up, right? It was, you know, Manchester versus Liverpool. It was a bit of a rivalry. It was a name. It was those things. You see. Darren fired up so much more here because he looks at Luke as a step up and someone to. To legitimize what he truly is. Where he couldn't grab gold in the ufc, he still thought of himself as one of the best in the world. Here's an opportunity, at least in his mind, to prove it.
I
So there you go. Yeah. Silence. Thank you. I've said my piece.
Dustin Poirier
Right.
Max Holloway
I'm coming back to the main event. Joey, what's the pressure going to be like on August 30th when you're walking out? First time, walking out into an arena with the gloves laced up? Can you picture it.
Dan Hardy
Yeah, of course, man. I can't wait. The big lights to be on, just me to walk up to the ramp to, like, the ring and just round one, it's just. It's just going to be game on. He's, you know, he's calling on like it's a war, but it's like. I would like to say it's going to be an easy night for him because he's obviously had a fight before, but he was useless. But I hope you are training hard and I hope you are, because I would. If I do knock you down, please get back up because I want to fight. I saw a video of you sparring corner van. I thought you were trying to look bad on purpose. It was. But then after a few more videos, I saw that it was real economy. Yeah, yeah, obviously my Conor Benny is a professional. Yeah, yeah, but you were raising your leg up like. Like a little, bro. That's no way to spar, right? At least face your opponent. And he was playing with you. It wasn't. It was just playing with you. And you were like this, of course, bro. He's my black, very good friend. Yeah, I know. Good to you. What are you trying to say then? No, I was trying to say that you're not prepared for this. When I look at you, all I think of is just like a baked bean. You're just a proper beanie now, bro. You look, bro. You're just like one big baked bean. Look at you, bro. You're sitting out here saying that you always wanted to fight your 35 mate. You know, he looks like a baby.
Dustin Poirier
Hey, I'm sorry. Numero's cooking. Maybe I'm. I don't know. But he. He's cooking him like, okay, Joey's calling him a baked bean. I don't know what that means, but he's just sticking it on him. Like, you said you. You wanted to fight. You're 35. If you wanted to fight, you would have fought. And Joey's like, yo, you better get up if I knock you down. Where I was like, bro, you ain't even fought yet. I hope you're preparing, because when I saw you spar, I didn't look like you wanted any part of a fight. Kind of sticking it on him.
Max Holloway
Darren, you liking the fact there's some other beef on the stage?
I
It's not just you. What the are we doing here? Luke's not saying now. Might have to start on beef with other people.
Max Holloway
You were calling people out like you were on social Media you were asking for people naming them. No one was taking it right before. When did Luke become an option?
I
Well, they nice Nathan, he has that plum over there. Decided to ask me to fight. It was an Ibita cross eyed on the aisle and I just come back home. I was like, yeah. And then he just said he doesn't want to fight because he's an absolute stuffing head. And then obviously Luke took.
Dustin Poirier
Luke talk, dude, just the entire sentence. Darren Till just said I want to see if I understood him correctly. He said Nate Diaz wanted to fight me. I was out in Ibiza, I guess that's Ibiza. And he said I was cross side off the ale. Just the phrases are insane. And that's when he wanted to fight me because he's a complete stuff head or stuffing head. I don't know what the hell these expressions are, where they come from in the uk but some of them, especially Darren, he's not using the typical like sausage melt muppet. Like he's using some different ones. Man, this is awesome.
I
The fight. Well now Luke's question himself if he should have took it. Because I'm on smoke with you, mate.
Dustin Poirier
Whatever you want.
Dan Hardy
You could go back to Ibiza.
I
Don't forget, don't forget we shut upstairs because I've got something for you. Vada, we need that involved. KSI, please.
Dan Hardy
Anytime you want me.
I
No, but you said to me before, I don't take any more and I've never took any. What is it you said? Yeah, upstairs. I don't take it anymore. Then you said, I've never took it. Tell me what you're on. Okay, we got a few.
Dan Hardy
Have you taken BPC 157? No, I haven't. I think everybody in this room has taken.
I
Well, I'm the only stupid.
Dustin Poirier
Oh, Luke. Oh my God. He got caught. All right, so let me just break this down really quick. Darren Till is telling us that Luke essentially admitted to taking steroids when they were in some holding room before the press conference. And he kind of fumbled over it by being like, well, I don't take it anymore. Well, no, no, I never took it. And then Luke responded by saying, I took BPC157. BPC157 is not a steroid by the classical term of what a steroid and anabolic is. But BPC157, I'll show you guys here is a banned substance and on the prohibited list or WADA and usada. And I would assume that means also for vada. Now what BPC157 is. Is an experimental peptide, so it's not necessarily a steroid. But peptides are all the rage in recovery and BBC 157 used to help and aid in recovery of tendon muscle damage, like, things like that. I mean, you've probably heard it on Joe Rogan's podcast. You probably heard a ton of people talk about it. And I'm gonna be honest, Luke is probably not the only guy that's ever taken BPC157. But that doesn't mean that he's currently on it. He just did a really bad job of explaining when he was put on the spot here by Darren till what it was he was talking about and why he even brought that up to Darren in the first place. I don't understand. Because now, regardless of what Luke says, he's going to be looked at, especially by Darren, as a cheater, a PED user.
I
The fat ones, obviously he's not taking it, so maybe I should. Lee, get me some juice. Steroids.
Dan Hardy
It's not juicy dumb.
I
I don't know what it is, but you're on it today.
Dan Hardy
I look this way my whole life, mate.
I
No, you haven't.
Dustin Poirier
Yes. He keeps doing the mate thing. The funniest thing is like, Luke is just saying it as if it's like the only way Darren will understand the sentence before he speaks. Like, Luke thinks that Darren probably can only understand him in his mind if he says mate after his sentence. That's what kills me. No accent. He's like, dude, I've looked like this my whole life, mate. He just keeps doing it.
I
Now then you look at the 30. Are you joking?
Dan Hardy
Because I live a life like you.
I
I've just walked in the room and seeing you with your top off, and I said to them, them I might pull out of despite. He's looking that good.
Dan Hardy
Yeah, well.
I
At 46, you're on stuff.
Dan Hardy
I'm not.
I
I'm not.
Dan Hardy
I'm not coming here. I'm not coming here to fight and just to show up to Patri. I'm coming here to put a stamp on. On what I'm doing and adding to what I'm doing. I'm like, I'm excited to box. There's been holes in my game in boxing. Now it's time to close those holes. It's time to put you down and time to put you back in line and teach you a lesson.
I
This sounds like.
Dustin Poirier
Oh, my God. It does sound like Terrence said it sounded like a line from an American movie. I'm gonna Put you down. It does. I think sometimes. Luke speaks in action movie sequences. Dude, action movie monologue. Luke, he kills me, man.
I
You're not putting me down. If it comes chin to chin, you can't stop me. I can stop you, though. You're chinny. Hey, Stewart.
Dan Hardy
Put you down.
I
Are you most. Put me down.
Dan Hardy
He was this close.
Max Holloway
Give me an assessment of his first boxing match.
Dan Hardy
I mean, Dan, he has not changed. He's. He's good.
I
Good.
Dan Hardy
If you give him space, no doubt. His chin's always up. He comes up high every. Every chance. Luke, you have no idea how no one's seen me box.
I
Well, this is the.
Dan Hardy
You've never seen me box. You can only judge me from what you see, which is not boxing.
I
I can judge you from mma. And you haven't been working on the logistics of boxing.
Dan Hardy
I'm not working on logistics.
I
You've been fanning around. I'm doing right now, and obviously that.
Dan Hardy
And you know, I'm obviously not doing nothing. Well, you need boxing every day. Every damn day.
I
Every day you're gonna see it. But the guys in the gym didn't text me. Honest to say. You're missing the track. You're only doing three laps.
Dan Hardy
See? Why are you doing so much homework?
Dustin Poirier
Oh, my God. Did you. So the guys in the gym are texting me, telling me that you're missing track days, which is a conditioning day. So again, I. I don't. I'm not gonna say it's just Hamzat or whoever is. Because Darren probably knows a ton of the guys over there. I mean, Rampage is over there, Armin's over there. I'm sure that there's mutual friends in that group, whether it's Hamzat's team, whoever that Darren knows, and he said they're texting him, telling him what Luke's doing. He's not even asking for it. That's crazy.
I
I'm fighting the former Strike Force UFC world champion. If I didn't do studying about you, I'd be a idiot. Everyone in here agrees with that. I have to study it. I need to know everything about you.
Max Holloway
Yeah. So what are you expecting from it? As a fighter, what are you expecting from me? Give me a technical breakdown.
I
MMA side of things. Things. It was a time where I was in my primary was. Luke was a Strike Force world champion, FC champion. But this is boxing. And Luke hasn't really been doing boxing. He's just been fanning around in the gym. I know he has because I've been studying him because he's you know, he's. He still lives, mate.
Max Holloway
So have you got spies in your.
Dan Hardy
Company.
I
Country club, all that zesty talk.
Max Holloway
Have you got a spy in your camp, then?
I
Luke, stop that zesty talk right now. Not into that.
Max Holloway
Who's reporting on you in your camp?
I
Luke.
Max Holloway
Who's letting him know what's going on?
Dan Hardy
He's working every angle he can. But I haven't been. I haven't been training with the boys in a while. I'm in a boxing gym. I'm in Churchill Boxing. I'm with Connor, Ben's coach, and I'm working every day diligently on my mechanics of boxing. And I'm boxing some of the best professional boxers around.
Dustin Poirier
Probably doesn't help Luke, the fact that he just said he's with Connor, Ben's coach and the whole PD thing. Listen, I love Connor, but that. It's not an indictment. But it definitely doesn't look good when you turn around and say, I'm not taking, but I did maybe at some point, and now I'm with Connor, Ben's fox. But he said, okay, he says Churchill boxing. I didn't know that Luke was at Churchill Boxing. I heard that he's at the Jackson gym, which is a different gym, a little closer to me, but Churchill's a great gym as well. And you know, Connor, Ben's coach. I'm not exactly sure which coach he's referring to, but regardless, good gym, good coach, good environment for Luke, and I'm really am excited to see what he looks like. Genuinely. I want to see how Luke looks just boxing, because he's got a good left hand. He's a freak athlete. It's just that we haven't seen him look technically sound as a boxer really ever. Right. Just in the boxing realm. He's been caught with lead hand hooks from the orthodox position. And I don't know if that'll be the same kind of downfall when he fights Darren because Darren's a southpaw. But still, overhand lefts, lead hook, stuff like that, where Luke does kind of keep his chin in the air and kind of come straight back with it. Those things have been a problem of his, which he's admitting now. So I think that's good.
I
I know big boys. I know you're not.
Dan Hardy
And I'm putting them on and I'm putting them down.
I
I know you do not. Hey, because I've been studying you. Have you just said so if I was.
Dan Hardy
No, I don't really. I don't release what I do. Right now.
I
No, Dave, no. You don't have to be releasing everything to me. And you've been missing track days.
Max Holloway
All right, let's get some questions from the media.
Dustin Poirier
Your whole team is telling on you. That's crazy. If I'm Luke, I'm. I'm cutting some people out of camp. I'm not gonna lie. They're letting not only Darren still know what I'm doing, what I'm not doing, but if they're showing him videos. Oh, nah, bro. You got it. You got to cut ties with some of these people every day.
I
I know that means I'm on pies and spider and I'm gonna kill you. That's what's happened. Guys. You're not letting me chilly. I'm chilly.
Max Holloway
All right, guys. All right, guys, let's. Let's get into the questions from the media. I believe we've got some questions down at the front. Here you go. Far away bl from this. It's fox. And what a press conference that I must say. Salt Pappy 3 years ago you were fighting halal Ham.
Dustin Poirier
Now you're stepping into the ring with Tony Ferguson.
Max Holloway
Talk to me about that journey and how you got here.
Dustin Poirier
That's wild to think that Salt papi three years ago was fighting halal ham.
Max Holloway
Darren, Luke's called you soft. He's called you fat. He's called you every expletive under the sun today down here. But would you actually think of Luke as a fighter? He's called you chinny.
I
No, this is the thing. I. I come at realness. Luke's just saying a load of mumble jumble like, you know, this is what I mean. There's what. What's getting. Luke's in a trouble. This is. I. I actually think Luke could have been a goat like Truly. But what gets Luke in trouble is his ego, his pride. Our vain is and all that stuff. And when you put them together as a collective psychologically he fails at it. Do you know what I'm saying? And he knows that's the truth. Sitting there now like what he done with Bisping. He would just smashing that night. Well to be on miss being come in and no one was taking that night but he come in Lali Da because of his pride and his ego. He felt like Bishop shouldn't have been in there with him and he got starch because of it. And that's what happens with Lucas. Ego's too much. You can't have an ego like this.
Dan Hardy
In this game, I have to admit. Darren.
Dustin Poirier
Darren. Till just Soul read that man. And he's kind of right. At least. Least if you go through Luke Rockhold's kind of downfall in mma. He's kind of directly on point with what he's saying. Like every point he just made is like true. Complete facts. If Luke is still like that and he's come into this press conference a little cocky. Listen, the kid's done well. He's okay, but he hasn't fought anybody. You know, that kind of thing, it could get him into trouble again.
Dan Hardy
He's a lot smarter than he looks sometimes, but thank you.
Dustin Poirier
Yeah.
I
This is where this is. You have to feel for everyone here.
Dan Hardy
This is where.
I
This is where.
Dan Hardy
Where you correct those wrongs. The boxing has been my weakest avenue and I've covered the whole unfortunately are going to be my point. My. My play.
I
Well, I don't think I am. You're over ashamed. Like I'm a big falcons and stuff like that.
Dustin Poirier
You're going to be my play. Like you meant to say pray, but I mean, at least Luke admits it, you know that he's like, yeah, yeah, I've had some holes and, and taken some people lightly and we're going to fix that now. Fair.
I
I mean, all my life, I swear it's not going to matter.
Dan Hardy
Hey, you guys were bitching about. Wait, what. What is this about 185? You look like you're 240 right now. And then you wouldn't go above 188. We're sitting here on 188 for two 87.5. And then we find. Then we settle at 193.
Dustin Poirier
Why are you.
Dan Hardy
Why are you bitching so hard about weight? Why are we playing this game?
I
What you mean bitching? After my last fight, I said to misfits, I'll fight all the fights now at 87.5. Cuz my last one was at 91. So if I was bitching about weight, like obviously I'm fighting at 91. Like why would I be asked about. I'm going lower.
Dan Hardy
What are these? Why can't we just settle on it on a. On a regular way? Well, you want to settle on 188? What is this 193? Why now we're 193?
I
Because my friend Wade's come from my friend. It's not the issue. But in the clown. We're in the circus. We could do whatever the we want. This is the circus, my friend. Like Luke, get to grips with this. This is a circus. You know this is the circus. When we've got Jake Paul calling Auntie Joshua out, we need to laugh. Look at how it's going. So embrace the circus, Luke. We'll do anyway.
Dustin Poirier
Facts, dude. That's the stone cold truth. Darren is dropping some truth bombs in this press conference. It is boxing influencer. Boxing, even MMA at times is a bit of the circus. And for whatever reason, there are times where we want to rise above it. Now again, there's a place in time for everything and there's going too far into the circus. Right. And I've had my complaints about that as well. But in the time we're in where Jake Paul is calling out Anthony Joshua is probably going to get that fight. Is there really anything wrong with having fights at a specific weight? No catch weight fights for stuff like misfits. This actually kind of works perfectly because you're not beheld in by a weight division. No one cares if you're fighting at 175 or 200 or 168 or 100. We don't care. Just find a weight that both of you like and just go do it. Because the fight is what we care about, your weight going into it. We could give a about Tony. You and Dylan Danis are both on this card. If you guys both win your fights is that potential fight.
Max Holloway
We'll see down the line.
Dustin Poirier
Fred talks fighting. Great question. This is is the perfect setup for a Tony Dylan Danis fight if they both win.
H
Money talks, walks. So I mean, being real, I'm here to box. So this is the fight that I'm interested in. It's all Poppy. This dude said he's gonna knock me out and then now he doesn't want to say it. As soon as you get somebody in front of you, it's a little bit harder to take something. So that pissed me off. And so I know where my energy is going to go into this camp. So that goes with anybody talking against me.
Dustin Poirier
Okay, Tony getting a little spiteful there. I like it. The question was, would Tony fight Dylan Danis? And he said bullshit talks and money. I don't know what he said. But then he kind of turned the question on Salt. Papi. I didn't know that Salt was saying he was going to knock him out, but I like it. Take something from it. And listen, a lot of people, myself included, think that Tony could be in real trouble here. I'm not afraid to say that I think that it's a problem fighting Salt Poppy in your first one coming over. But maybe Tony proves us all wrong. And I know he feeds on that kind of stuff because he always has during his career. I respect it. Feed off it, use it. I hope that it gives him some. Some, you know, advantage in some way, or it brings back a bit of that fire that Tony have lost in the ufc, whatever it is, but I like that. First off, before we do the face offs, I want to say, great press conference. Way to hype this up. The guys feel energized. The moment feels like it's right, and I just think it's a great card. That's. That's point blank, period. I thought Darren Till owned that press conference. I thought Luke Rockhold had his moments, but I mean, Darren was just on fire today. I thought Tony Ferguson came across remotivated, reinvigorated. I think Salt Poppy is, is. He's never going to be a guy that talks too much, but he's confident. And then I like this little rivalry that's brewing between Numero and Joey Essex. They are influencers that get it. I think Numero is doing a little bit more of the selling. I think Joey Essex has got a little bit more, you know, to him it's like, oh, no, I'm about to come in and smash you up. So let's take a look at their face off first.
Max Holloway
The Miro returns to the ring. Joey Essex making his eagerly anticipated debut.
Dan Hardy
Yeah.
Dustin Poirier
What are you hearing.
Max Holloway
Collective? We're going to see a good fight.
Dan Hardy
You're shaking already, mate. What's up with you? You're shaking, bro. You're not built for this.
Dustin Poirier
Trust me.
Dan Hardy
I'm fight night, bro.
Dustin Poirier
We'll see.
Dan Hardy
Yeah.
I
Build, build.
Dustin Poirier
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I
Okay, okay.
Dustin Poirier
You'll see. Yeah.
I
Shut up.
Dustin Poirier
You'll see. Shut up. I like it, man. I like it. So Numero told him he was already shaking. This one right here. Keep an eye on it. Good face off. I know that Charlie is. Is. Is hosting this thing, but they gotta. They gotta lay out when they're doing the face off because the boys are talking. You can't be talking while the fighters are talking. There's too much talking.
Max Holloway
Being cool, calm and collected. He always will be. I find it mad. Charlie, this geezer was uploading to Tik Tok's doing the running man does. Now he face offs against Tony Ferguson.
Dustin Poirier
Tony said he throwing sand already. Bobby's like, nah, I do the salt. I'll leave the sand to you, legend. He boxing gloves now, so he won't be able to do it. But when he threw sand in Justin G fight, he grabbed it off the floor and threw sand. Oh my God, the memories, man.
Max Holloway
Like he said on stage, this is what dreams are made of. You know, Salt Papi is a very good boxer. I really thought he had had some amateur background or box when he was younger. He's adapted to it. Like a duck with water. Well, there we are. What a fight we have for you. So exciting to see Tony Ferguson on Misfits against Salt Papy. Now to Dan with the next face off.
Dustin Poirier
Good face off. Good face off.
Max Holloway
Luke Rold and Darren Till.
Dustin Poirier
Here we go. Main event. Face off.
Max Holloway
Well, here we go.
Dustin Poirier
Go. Luke fakes take down. Oh Jesus. They go chest to chest right away.
Max Holloway
Messing about. Straight to it, straight to it. I think kind of after the press conference there we expected that.
Dustin Poirier
Oh my God. Luke's kind of bullying him a little bit now again, I don't know if this is like any indication. Luke just straight. I mean this is just a, a, a strength test, right? They're, they're boxing, they're not going to grapple. Immediately both guys start grappling and getting collar ties but Luke just walks through him here.
Max Holloway
The main event. I was expecting that.
Dustin Poirier
Now granted, Darren does have one of the security guards pulling him back.
Max Holloway
I think kind of after the press collar tie. We expected that. Darren collar tie, headbutting Luke Rockhold there. They're trying to grapple with the necks being called. They want to give it to each other. But when all said and done is at the end of this, these two personalities look like they could gel very well.
Dustin Poirier
This is so good.
Max Holloway
And that's why we're going to see a massive fight with these two.
Dan Hardy
Cuz they both want to win that.
Max Holloway
Batt styles make fights and I think this one will be an absolute banger. Darren Till often getting in people's head. I must say Luke does look cool, calm and collected.
Dustin Poirier
Charlie.
Max Holloway
Yeah, he does. And he has looked a bit since I've laid something that others may not. And it's good to see Darren Till always getting under this.
Dustin Poirier
Good. They're both professionals, they're not going to swing on each other. There's just a bit of a, you know, I don't know what you call this, a macho off between the two of them right there. Right again, this mostly happens in grappling in mma. They, they want to get hands on each other. It's going to sound super pause worthy, but just stay with me. How are you feeling right now? You a little soft like what's going on? Let me, let me feel how strong you are. Like this type of push pull stuff happens. And like I said, they're both professionals. They're not going to fight right there. But it just gives a sense of realism, it gives a sense of energy, of fight feel, a big fight feel. This is just the beginning to the build up for August 30th. Ayo Arena. I don't think this first presser could have gone any better. Darren Till holding court. Is Tony Ferguson going to prove Everybody wrong? The 110% of people that are doubting him doing Tony math path or assault Poppy gonna take the next step in his misfits journey? Do we have numero as a brand new name in this scene coming in talking his crazy to Joey Essex? Where's Joey Essex gonna take Tony Sims's advice and lock in and take this fight seriously and build his own journey in misfits? I don't have any answers yet, but we're just a month away from the card. Coverage is coming soon. Like I said, I'm gonna try to get out and train and do some stuff with Luke Rockhold, so. So stay tuned for that. But August 30th AO arena misfits 22 Ring of Thrones is the date, is the time, is the place that all these questions will have answers. What happens then? Guess we'll find out.

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Episode: THE W.A.D.E. Concept - WEEK IN REVIEW - UFC 318 MADNESS, Daniel Dubois EXPOSED and Misfits 22 Presser BREAKDOWN...
Release Date: July 28, 2025
(02:17 – 13:35)
The episode dives deep into the aftermath of UFC 318, where Max Holloway secured a victory over Dustin Poirier in what many describe as Poirier's retirement fight in New Orleans. Host Dustin Poirier provides a comprehensive breakdown of the fight dynamics and its implications for both fighters' futures.
Fight Dynamics: Poirier describes the fight as bittersweet, highlighting the competitive spirit where fans wanted both fighters to succeed. Ultimately, Holloway emerged victorious with two judges scoring it 49-46. Poirier acknowledges Holloway's superior performance, especially at the 155-pound weight class, noting, “Max showed the best version of himself tonight” (12:01).
Technical Breakdown: Poirier emphasizes Holloway's strategic use of body kicks and variety in his striking, which outpaced Poirier’s evasive maneuvers. He remarks, “Max’s volume is insane. He doesn't get tired and he's stronger now at 55” (10:45).
Poirier’s Performance: While recognizing Poirier's resilience and toughness, he critiques his reluctance to engage fully in exchanges, stating, “Dustin was never willing to meet an exchange. It was only, let's reset my turn” (05:30).
Future Implications: Holloway's win revitalizes his career at lightweight, positioning him among the top contenders and setting the stage for potential rematches with fighters like Ilya Topuria. Poirier reflects on his own career prospects post-retirement, mentioning interest in becoming a commentator or analyst for ESPN (13:20).
(13:35 – 39:53)
The conversation shifts to the highly scrutinized fight day of heavyweight boxer Daniel Dubois against Alexander Usyk. Poirier critiques the influence of Dubois's father, Stanley Dubois, on his professional life, suggesting that Stanley's decisions may have adversely affected Daniel's performance and mental state during the fight.
Background Investigation: Poirier shares insights into Dubois's upbringing, revealing he was homeschooled and heavily influenced by his father from a young age. He states, “Daniel Dubois is one of 11 children, mostly homeschooled, and his father has been the driving force behind his boxing career” (14:10).
Fight Day Issues: Highlighting the chaotic scene before the fight, Poirier criticizes Stanley Dubois for hosting a distracting party hours before the match, which reportedly made Daniel uncomfortable. “Stanley Dubois made some very odd decisions that potentially affected Daniel Dubois’ ability to fight” (25:45).
Performance Critique: Despite Poirier’s respect for Usyk’s prowess, he argues that external distractions likely impeded Dubois's focus and preparation. He echoes sentiments from Tony Bellew, who questions Dubois's motivations and underlines the necessity for Daniel to assert control over his professional decisions: “Daniel needs to decide what it is he wants” (34:53).
Future Outlook: Poirier advises Dubois to mature and take ownership of his career, separating personal and professional spheres to prevent further distractions. He concludes, “If he makes the right decisions and grows up a little bit, there’s still a path for him in heavyweight boxing” (39:00).
