Welcome in episode 457 of what's Ripen the Crate. As always, this episode is brought to you by our friends at Boost Mobile. It is a bonus Monday episode to make up for the fact that Thursday we were not able to deliver you guys an episode that was a combination of health and tech and everything doesn't matter. We weren't able to be here Thursday, so we are here today. We will also be live tomorrow as scheduled, reacting to Game one of the Western Conference finals which comes at you tonight. And we do have a conference final set. And so to get this bonus episode or tomorrow's episode. As always, subscribe to the pod, YouTube, iTunes, Spotify, all of that. So I kind of want to start big picture in this regard as we have Spurs, Thunder and Cavs Nicks in the conference finals. Now did I predict this? No. Am I on a historically bad run when it comes to my pre playoffs predictions and then my adjusted. Well my this team got knocked out so let me go with that team individual series predictions? Absolutely. Is it even more embarrassing when you consider the fact that in the Western Conference it's just one versus two? The two best teams in the conference and maybe the league all year and in the Eastern Conference it's the two preseason favorites? Those are the teams left standing? Does it make it more embarrassing? Sure, a little bit. However, my own shame aside, even if it's not what I was rooting for, even if it's clearly not what I predicted, this is the perfect Final Four. And if you're an NBA fan or a basketball fan or just a fan of high intensity drama, this is the correct Final Four. In the West. It's obvious why the spurs and the Thunder have been on a collision course all season long. The reasons to think the Thunder weren't going to get back to at least the conference finals were really as simple as well, the last seven champions have lost. Lost in round two or earlier. That was the entirety of the analysis, especially once you saw what the bracket was as to why the Thunder would not be here. It wasn't deep. It was not really all that thoughtful. It was just weird shits happened the last decade or so in the NBA playoffs for the defending champ in round two. Ask Min. Ask Milwaukee who was up 32 on Boston. Ask Denver who was up 32 on Minnesota. Ask the Celtics who got shockingly upset last year before Tatum got hurt falling down three one to the Knicks. But there was no real way from a X's and O standpoint to explain when the bracket came out how the Thunder were not going to win round one. They obviously did easily. And then in round two they were staring at either a dysfunctional Rockets team or a Lakers team that was likely going to be without its best player. So they were seemingly on a very smooth ride to the conference finals. That smooth ride has been eight. No, the spurs. The reason not to believe in them was a little more thoughtful. They might have to go through Joker, who I thought would beat them. When they didn't have to go through Joker, it looked like they were going to have to go through this playoff juggernaut Minnesota team who Again, I thought would beat them. And the fact that going into these playoffs when it was crunch time, they were going to have one player with any playoff experience whatsoever, and it was de' Aaron Fox and his playoff experience was seven first round games and that's it. Those were real reasons in my eyes to be concerned about the Spurs. None of it mattered. They lost game one of round two. It didn't matter. They didn't have Wimby for three quarters of one of the games in the series. It mattered temporarily, but they got him back for game five and it once again didn't matter. And the question of how will their young guys rise to the occasion? The answer was resoundingly excellent. Where in those conference finals you had Dylan Harper take a miniature leap, I think it's fair to say giving you 15 a game on 57% shooting and just some clutch minutes and clutch moments where you felt like, oh, wow, is he. Rather than Castle, who will get to him in a second, was out of his mind. In this series, is he going to be the number two for Wimby long term? Jumping Castle in that hierarchy at 20 years old, 20 years old in his first playoff run, you can kind of see it. And then Castle, who in game six couldn't miss but for the series was a tidy 55, 48 shooting splits, leading the team in points per game, aided of course by Wimy's ejection in game two, leading the team in assists per game and giving you six rebounds a game. Castle was unbelievable to the extent of if we did a semifinal mvp, it might have been him. It probably would be Wimby based on the strength of the four blocks a game to go along with 20 and 12. But Castle would have had a case for it. So the age didn't show up with San Antonio. And now we have the Western Conference finals. We wanted all year the defending juggernaut champ against the only team that gave them any trouble. And then out east, it's a slightly more circuitous path. But at the beginning of the season, this was the conference finals, everyone thought we were going to get. Boston, we had written off because of Tatum's injury. Indiana, obviously we had written off because of Halliburton's injury. Turns out we maybe wrote off Boston a little too early, but not really. In Indiana, we were correct. You didn't see Philly staying healthy. Miami seems to be on the back back end. It was two teams in Cleveland and New York who had been building to this moment, who had gone all in on their starting fives who had made coaching changes in the last few years because they felt like they were underachieving in the postseason, who were set up as well as possible to win the conference for the Knicks for the first time this century and for the Cavs for the first time ever without LeBron James on the team. And at a bunch of points throughout this year, it looked like we were not going to get that. The knicks had the 2 and 9 stretch right after New Year's. It at no point during this regular season did they look dramatically better or at some points just better at all than last year's Knicks team. That wasn't good enough. And the Cavs were so frustrated with where they were at that they made, in my opinion, quite the panic trade moving on from Darius Garland and bringing in all time playoff dropper James Harden. And it just felt like. And meanwhile Detroit is just humming along all year and then we get to the postseason and the Knicks after. Call it what I really think the Knicks have had one bad stretch of basketball this whole postseason. By stretch of basketball I just mean like 30 minutes. The the fourth quarter of game two of round one, the Knicks played as poorly as you could and not even the fourth quarter really the final five minutes and gave that game away. I think game three was a great game. Nip and tuck. They end up losing in the last seconds. That happens. And from that moment forward, the Knicks are just an unstoppable juggernaut. And the Cavs path very, very different. Round one, they struggle way more than they should with an over achieving Raptors team. Winning every home game, losing every road game. Round two, they once again follow the home road back and forth going into game five where they're down nine with three minutes left. And it's like, okay, this is how it's going to end. They're going to lose this game. They're going to be down three, two, they're going to make major changes. And Donovan Mitchell will continue to be one of the greatest players in NBA history to never forget win a championship, forget make a finals. One of the greatest players to never make a conference finals. And then Evan Mobley hits that top of the key three with about a minute left. Detroit spits up on itself a bit. They maybe get away with a foul, they win in overtime. And there Cavs, that's the moment they've arrived. Until they have one of the worst performances of any team all Postseason in Game 6 at home to go to the conference finals. And again you can't believe in them. And you're staring at a Game seven James Harden, which gave us by the way, exactly what you would have expected from a game 7 James Harden 2 for 10 from the field, 9 points. Detroit was on the brink against Orlando 13 in a row was on the brink against Cleveland. Blew them out in Game 6 and it felt like they were going to follow that same pattern and instead the Cavs absolutely annihilate them in a 30 point road game seven win. And that gives us honestly our ideal conference finals. The two juggernauts that people think are going to be competing for the title of dynasty of this era, Oklahoma City and San Antonio against the two teams that understandably felt like if not this year, then when are we going to make a finals in Cleveland and the Knicks? And so these next two weeks of one game every single night I think should be exceptional. I not that anybody wants me, you know, nobody wants me to pick their team right now. That's pretty obvious. With that said, I lean very strongly Nicks in the east and while I will be rooting for the spurs in the West, I think Oklahoma City has a little too much despite San Antonio's regular season dominance. And so I think we're going to get the Knicks Thunder in the finals, but we'll spend more on that throughout the week. And honestly my picks have been so bad that I don't even really feel tied to him anymore. I'm going to do the old Kevin Wilds be like let me watch a couple games. Not really. To me, Spurs Thunder is a coin flip. I would be very surprised if the Cavs beat the Knicks. I think the Knicks are the better team and I want to spend a few minutes on how we got here from the Cavs perspective in the east and the spurs perspective in the west and then talk about what the teams who lost, what they do. But I do think there is something to be said for the way Jared Allen in game seven of round one answered the bell and then in game seven of round two after at various times this postseason looking really out of sorts. Jared Allen was a monster when they avoided total catastrophe in round one against I might have said Orlando there for a moment. I hope I didn't against Toronto and was in my opinion their best player alongside Evan Mobley, I guess you could argue is Mobley last night in game seven seemingly with an easy path to the basket every time you touch the ball and that does give you a little we'll get more into Jalen Duran in a bit, but Jared Allen in his first playoff runs looked like he was just not going to have it in the postseason. And then is having this moment gives you maybe a little hope for a young Jalen Duran that he can follow a similar path. And then Evan Mobley who has been, I think it's fair to say for Mobley pretty disappointing over the last few years. The lack of improvement he comes into the league and is getting instantly getting Kevin Garnett comps. He's an untouchable in every potential trade and basically from year two to now, year three to now is probably a fairer way to put it. Kind of leveled off 16 to 18 points per game, nine rebounds a game. A very, very good defensive player, no doubt about it. But hasn't you thought he was going to steadily improve his three point shot this year? That fell off a cliff and you just. He looked like a really good player rather than franchise cornerstone. And maybe that shot in game five, the biggest shot of his career was helped him turn a corner. He, he is only 24 years old. He was. I probably was a little too when saying Jared Allen might have been the best player on the court last night. Mobley was sensational from a passing, rebounding, defense and scoring perspective. And now Evan Mobley is going to be tasked with doing what he did in game seven almost every night. If they're going to upset the Knicks and Paul, you can put in the dock for me what the odds are, but I've got to imagine The Knicks are minus 200. I'm curious what this. I haven't looked. I'm curious what the series odds for both of these series are. I can put the Paul's putting it in right now, but it would be an upset. I know the Knicks are favored. They're not only home, they've been playing much better. But I've got to imagine The Thunder like minus 300 and the Knicks minus 200. Those are my guesses. Paul can let me know but Mobley is going to have to keep this up. And then there's Donovan Mitchell who because of Embiid, nobody is. You know, Embiid's the greatest player in oh Nick's all Nick's at minus 260. That's. That's a slightly big. And OKC also minus 260. So OKC slightly smaller favorite than I thought and the Knicks a slightly larger favorite than I thought. Both teams obviously been resting and chilling for a week now getting to watch all of this happen. In fact, before I get to Donovan Mitchell, since we just talked to you about the lines of the Conference Finals thanks to Hard Rock. What I was saying about Donovan Mitchell is it's a very unique postseason career because he started off such a man on fire in Utah where his first year in the playoffs they win a round one series, he has moments of brilliance. His third year in the playoffs, they lose a classic. 7 gamer I think. I think that was to Denver where he averages 36 a game for his career. In the playoffs he's 27.8 a game. It's I had this list the other day, but it's certainly top 10 all time. And I'm just going to pull it up real quick because I was looking at this the other day because we're going to make a graphic for the TV show. All time points per game in the postseason. The list goes like this. Michael Jordan 1. Luca 2. Iverson 3. Durant 4. Jerry West 5. LeBron James 6. Donovan Mitchell 7. 27.8 points per game in his playoff career. So he'd always been a consistent postseason scorer. However, and when they lost in Utah. We mostly blamed Rudy, but it goes without saying his playoff runs in Cleveland prior to this year had been wildly underwhelming. And even this year there were a bunch of moments where you felt like the hell's going on with Donovan Mitchell. Those two road games in Toronto, when they went for after he started the postseason, great, I think it was back to back 30 point games. Those two road games in Toronto. He's brutal and all of a sudden it's 2, 2 in this series. Game one of this series, he had a rough game. Game five, which they stole. He scored those five straight points in over. I think it was. Was that. Yeah, that was in overtime and prior to that when it looked like they were going to lose, it was. He was going to own most of it. And game six, just a couple days ago, one of the worst playoff games of his career. Now despite that, he has a 39 point half this postseason tying Sleepy Floyd. He has five 30 plus point games this postseason. So it's been obviously a bit of a roller coaster for him. But he's got to be their best guy by a lot if they're going to be able to upset the Knicks. And we are going to get Donovan vs. Jalen. The Knicks wanted Donovan. He go that he gets traded to Cleveland. The Knicks settle for Jalen. Jalen, since he's been a Knick, has been better than Donovan as a cavalry. It is a really fascinating arc for him. And what I was saying about the best players to never make conference finals, the top of that list for, you know, my childhood forever was Dominique Wilkins. Joel Embiid now clears everyone because he's a league MVP who's never made a conference finals. But after Embiid, Donovan was right there alongside Dominique with that very ignominious distinction. It's gone now. And there are also really big LeBron implications of this series. I think Cavs and Knicks are probably the two most likely non California, whether it be LA or Golden State LeBron destinations. But if the Cavs make the Finals, maybe the same with the Knicks. They might feel like we're just running it back with the one big question and the one negative of the Cavs game seven win being of course James Harden's just going to be James Harden in these spots. And credit to the Cavs that it didn't matter that they were able to get away with a 2 for 10 nine point game seven James Harden performance. And listen, he makes his first conference final since he was a Rocket. He made two with the Rockets, one with the Thunder doing this off the top of my head, I'm going to check, but it's. He only made two with the Rockets, right? He obviously made one with the Thunder when they made the Finals and now one with the Cavs. So it's his fourth career. Oh, wait, no, I'm short changing him. One. So did he make two with the Thunder? Yes, he did. So Harden made two with the Thunder the year before they made the finals and in the finals, two with Houston and then this one with the Cavs. But it's his first conference finals since leaving Houston back in 2020. And no one is going to care, nor will they remember this particular Game seven since they won. And they especially won't care, nor will they remember if Harden somehow find something, rallies and they make the NBA Finals. I'm skeptical of it. And he had overall, In its entirety, a really rough series. It's 38 from the floor and less than 30 from three. And the turnovers were insane. He had 31 turnovers in this, in the seven game series, but they won. So he wipes the slate clean and he sees what he can look like in msg. In. Yeah, he's, he's never played, now that I think of it, he's never played the Knicks in a playoff series because they obviously never played when he was in Brooklyn and when he was in Philly, they never came across the Knicks. So in his first playoff games ever at MSG, we'll see how he does. I'm skeptical Game 7 didn't give me more confidence. But what's more important for Cleveland really is their core guys, which are Mitchell, Mobley and Allen, all stepped up in this game seven and they're in their first conference final since LeBron was there. The Pistons, on the other hand, I'm. Maybe I shouldn't. And Cade was brutal last night. There's no way around it. And Cade's turnovers this postseason, he was going to truly threaten Jason Tatum's 100 postseason, 100 turnover postseason record had they advanced. He wasn't just going to threaten it. He was going to break the record had they advanced, but they didn't advance. I am going to give Cade Cunningham something of a pass here for his Game 7 performance, only because he was being asked to do so much for a team that offensively was essentially without its second best player for this entire postseason because Jalen Duran was an utter and complete no show start to finish this postseason. And so I'm not going to kill Cade when for all 14 games that Pistons played these playoffs, the opponent was like if we can shut off Cade's water, they've got no shot. And after through the first six games of this series and really for the entire playoffs, Cade was on a high volume three point heater, shooting more than seven a game, shooting better than 40%. He's over seven in game seven. He can get nothing going and they just get blown out. But Cade Cunningham is not anywhere close to the problem for Detroit. The problem for Detroit probably started the trade deadline when they decided to stand pat. It then expanded to their soon to be named either second or third team all NBA center Jalen Duran. I don't know if it was the I don't think it's that he's not going to be a good playoff player. I do think there's a possibility that the restricted free agency looming over him loomed a little too large and he got in his own head because he just was nothing like the player he was in the regular season. So that was. It was you didn't add more often to the deadline. Duran fell off. And then there is the issue which is also kind of a Rockets issue for his brother. Then there is the Asar Thompson question which is hey, what are you going to do over the summer to come back a fully formed player? Because and this applies to Amin as well. But Asar is the only guy in the league who is definitively as good of an athlete as him is his identical twin brother. He is a defensive menace. Just finished third and defensive player of the year voting. And when the other team has the ball there's not five guys in the league you'd rather have on your team. The problem is he is such an utter and complete non factor on offense. Won't shoot threes and can't shoot threes, won't shoot mid range jump shots and can't shoot mid range jump shots that when you have the ball the other team's got five guys to guard four people. And it's not an exaggeration to say for the Thompson twins if they move this summer together along with a shooting coach to rural Iowa, lock themselves in a gym and come back next year both of them with just capable corner three jumpers or corner three shots and one or two spots in the mid range that they're comfortable at that could be cumulatively for the two of them worth $1 billion. They are max players with anything resembling a jump shot. You have to respect max players, multiple max contracts. They're both 23. Obviously they're the same age. They're identical twins. They are such sick athletes. They bring so much to the table from a not intangible but from a dirty work perspective that all they have to do is become semi competent offensive threats. But if they don't do that, then you're just handcuffed with them on the court. And you saw Cleveland over the course of the series realize we're not guarding him at all. It's not that we're going to guard him a little bit, we are not guarding him at all. And the free throw shooting's bad. The three point shooting is non existent and that just undercuts so much of the off the charts defense he brings you. So those are the big questions for Detroit. I'm sure they'll go after Giannis. I don't know if that will be that attractive to Giannis. They also have to feel like man he cooled off at the end. But we're we probably are not going to be able to rely on this level of production from Tobias Harris in playoff runs moving forward. He had a stretch this postseason was seven straight 20 point games after not having back to back 20 point games all year. And Dennis Jenkins bright spot ascendant from a two way player to starter in game seven. But this is a real kick in the gut for the pistons. You win 60 games, the east seems wide open and now you're like man, we were kind of lucky to get out around one and then we just got blown off the court in a home game 7. With that said, with as many questions as Detroit has, I think the loser Friday night Minnesota might have more. We'll get to that in a moment. So what does Minnesota do from here? Julius Randle's got two years left on his deal. The second year is a player option. It's 33 million a year. And is obviously untouchable and unbelievable. And the fact that he was the best player on their team by a lot in a series most people thought he was going to miss all, or at least most of is it? And that he was able to be that effective despite having neither knee really working is a testament to him. But Julius Randle's been for 85% of his career playoff series close to unplayably bad. Now you'll get Dante back, you hope, at some point next year. But everyone's not going to be on the Tatum timeline, so we'll see when Dante's back. You found something, it looks like in Terence Shannon Jr. IO's a free agent. You of course want to bring him back. I can't imagine Julius will be on the team next year. And now they were in the Giannis sweepstakes at the deadline. It didn't happen. They were in the Kevin Durant sweepstakes at last year's deadline. It didn't happen. I don't think Durant's going to be back with Houston. Minnesota seems like the obvious next stop on his very mercurial 2000 and twenties. And Minnesota should obviously be proud of how they overcame and and Dante's injuries in beating Denver. And I thought they could win this series and maybe with a healthy aunt, it's different. But the spurs, the games The spurs won, three of them were such laughers. Game two, they win by 38. Game five, they win by 29. Game six, they win by 30. Minnesota's game one, when Wimby had one of his worst offensive games of the season and Game four, Wimby got thrown out. So how close were they really? But Minnesota can't just run it back. And my gut would be that the Minnesota Timberwolves are where Kevin Durant plays next year. I've never done this live on the show, but I, I've never tried to do a live. Create a trade, but I'm going to do it real quick to see if we can get one that works. Where? So Durant makes 43 million, Julius makes 33 million. So you. Yeah, I mean you could do Durant plus. Your first round pick from a year ago. I don't know. Baringer or from this past year. I think that just works. I'm sorry. Julius plus Baringer for Durant, that works. I. Minnesota, you could pro. You could throw in the. I don't know if you have to throw anything, maybe throw in the 28th pick of the draft, but I don't know. It depends on, I guess how they feel about Barringer, who, you know, didn't really play for them this year. French kid. But I, I would think that that is the move Minnesota is ultimately going to make. But I thought they would win game six, we'd get a Game seven and we would see how the young guys on San Antonio responded to a Game 7. Instead, the young guys on San Antonio said we're not going to have to worry about a Game seven because we're going to blow your ass out from the opening tip. And then one last thing before we go in news that was, you know, embargoed for weeks and then broken hours early. Shea is a back to back mvp. And even if I spend a lot of my time when discussing Shay talking about how some of his hijinks irritate me, his effectiveness and brilliance as a player is undeniable and his arc of being a where Was he the 11th pick of the draft? Being a lottery pick, but not by no means being thought of as a sure thing to being one of the key pieces of the Paul George trade to being the leading scorer on a bad OKC team where they even amidst a tank one year shut them down to now four straight years. Four straight averaging 30 plus back to back years winning league MVP going away and this season doing it on 55% from the field, It is offensive production by a guard that puts him in absolute rarefied air. And because of that, here is where he stacks up at this moment. Historically there are only four guards that you can say without a doubt, inarguably, undeniably, there is no case to be made against it. Had better careers were better than him, Michael, Magic, Kobe, Steph. Now in my opinion, Jerry West, Oscar Robertson and Isaiah Thomas. And I'm not going to argue with folks on the Internet about Isaiah Thomas when you compare their numbers. Isaiah Thomas was not a numbers guy. He was a I played in one of the hardest years ever and I beat everybody that mattered guy and that dated from college to the pros. But West Oscar, Isaiah to me are also ahead of him and he is eye to eye now with Dwyane Wade. So he is without a doubt one of the ten greatest guards ever. In my opinion he is right now 9th. If they win the title, he'll leap weight and be eighth. But if somebody wants to sit here and make the case he's fifth, you can make that case. I think West Oscar and I Weston Oscar certainly. And also I would argue Isaiah better. But that's where he is undeniably one of the 10 greatest guards ever. You could argue the fifth greatest guard ever. I think he slots in eight or nine with it being Michael, Magic, Kobe, Steph, Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Isaiah Thomas, Dwayne Wade and then him. But if a month from now he's also a back to back champion, he jumps Wade. And. A few weeks ago I made the point on TV that when he's when he's getting the calls that he gets in the regular season, he's Michael Jordan level statistics and when he doesn't, I said he drops to peak Dwyane Wade and I think that was misconstrued as, I don't know, maybe insulting to both guys insulting Dwight I you're going to find very few people that have Dwyane Wade ranked higher historically than I do and the amount of respect I have for him as a player. My point wasn't that being peak Dwayne Wade is a bad thing. My point was that being peeped Dwayne Wade is unbelievable and about how I see SGA as a player even though they're very different in how they go about it. And so he was all year long we talked about MVP and I would be making the case for Luca or we'd be talking about Wimby. All of it was who deserved to be second on people's ballots because SGA clearly basically wire to wire deserve to be first and he's the rightful winner. And as far as the international stuff goes, SGA is the eighth consecutive is the eighth straight year in an international player is one league MVP. But it goes further than that. This is the sixth straight year international guys have gone first and second and it is the fifth straight year international guys have gone first, second, third. The last American to finish top two in MVP voting was LeBron James in 2020 and that wave is not yet crested as WIMBY appears to be ready to take it over. And if right now you had to rank who's the likeliest American to win, who's the next American to win an MVP, I think I would rank it Ant 1 Tatum 2 and then Cooper Flag 3 and the the answer might be the that I should have Cooper flag ranked higher because Wimby's about to rip off a bunch in a row. But we'll see. We've got game one tonight. Spurs Thunder. Curious if the layoff hurts the spurs at all. J Dub should be back. He's listed as available. I wonder how much they play him. And then Game one Knicks Cavs tomorrow night. We will be back right here tomorrow with another episode of what's Right. Apologies for last week, but we'll be talking to you guys throughout the week.
