All right. What's right with Nick Wright? Episode470 as always, these episodes brought to you by our friends at Boost Mobile. This is going to be a quick little Friday or weekend snack sized episode. Talking some World cup this. You guys will be hearing this, you know, probably after Team USA's game against Australia in Thursday's episode we discussed that pot that game, but we are recording this before that game as we recorded Thursdays obviously before the game. So we are just focused on what they call Match day one of the World Cup. Every team as of this recording has played what their first of three group Stage games and almost all of the biggest stars shined brightly. Almost all. Well, I shouldn't say almost all. Most of the biggest favorites looked deserved with a few exceptions. So we will get into that for a tournament that so, so much of the World cup and your, at least for me, ability to really lock in has to do with the time zone of it. Like the fact that these games are all on during the day has made it to where I can watch more of this than any World cup since the one in Brazil in 20. When would that have been? 2014 was in Brazil? Because Brazil also, you're in basically same time zones. And so I really do feel like I have a feel for how the tournament's going, even if you guys don't look to me as the foremost international soccer expert. I think you guys know, I think I, I care about it and follow it more than I think a lot of the people who do what I do because I this, it's. I don't know, I gamble on sports and I enjoy it and I actually, you know, feel like I like this more than, I don't know, I watch more EPL than probably than regular season baseball. I certainly watch more international soccer than I do hockey. And so coming into the tournament I felt like I had a good grasp on it after the first week or so. I feel really, you know, really good about where, where I'm at with this tournament, so to speak, and demand. I think it is drawing in and the more the better Team USA does, the more it will draw in the casual fans. But I think the fact that Messi and Harry Kane and Mbappe and all the stars with, you know, the Cristiano Ronaldo exception that we'll get to have been shining so brightly, have brought in the casual fans. So let's get right to it as far as talking a little week one of the World Cup.
Podcast Co-host
Some big time teams that have met expectations in Argentina, France, Germany and England and your guys, even your guys in Norway, they had some solid dubs in their first match.
Nick Wright
Yes.
Podcast Co-host
Which team and player has impressed you the most in this first round?
Nick Wright
All right, so I thought England on Wednesday was stunning. How good they were in the second half. They were great offensively the whole game. But England in their game against Croatia, you could argue given who they were playing, it was as impressive of a performance as anybody has had. France's second half overall against Senegal is neck and neck with it. Those are the two teams and by the way, they are two of the biggest favorites going into the tournament that Looked like they deserved to be.
Colin Coward
And.
Nick Wright
So much of evaluating these teams in the group stages, who they're playing and Senegal's a top 20 team in the in the world. Croatia, while no longer a top 20 team, they have made back to back World cup semifinals, including the final eight years ago. They hadn't lost a game at the World cup in their last two tournaments prior to this one.
Jeff T
And
Nick Wright
England and France really playing in very different ways. Pretty mediocre first halves. France's first half was mediocre because their offense, the Mbappe, was just kicking the ball around the field. They didn't get anything going really. England's first half was mediocre because their defense was allowing Croatia to do whatever it wanted to do. For both of those teams to then go out and win their second halves by plus two margins was just spectacular. And Mbappe to me has the goal of the tournament. So those are the two teams that were favorites going in and played to the part in the first week of the group stage. The player, of course that is going to jump out at you is Messi. And this is the crazy thing about Messi. There was a time where the only. Yeah, but on Messi's resume was World cup performances. It's not only that the team hadn't won, but that he had not been as prolific of a goal scorer that that there was. He had been criticized a lot domestically, including by Diego Maradona, the previous greatest Argentinian player ever, for caring more about Barcelona, his club team, than he did about Argentina. There was a World Cup, I think in 2014. He won the Golden Ball, which is MVP of the tournament, and still got criticized for his performance. And then. Sports are funny, man. He Argentina, I mean, he was criticized so heavily demand after the World cup in. I don't know if it was 14. I think it was 14. So four or three World Cups ago that he briefly retired from international soccer. He's like, I'm not going to play for the Argentina anymore. I can't do it.
Podcast Co-host
Yeah.
Nick Wright
And then la at the last World Cup, Argentina is one of the big favorites in a South American World Cup. It was played in Brazil, not Argent. The. No, that's not right. Last year was in South American World Cup. I picked a South American team. Last year was played in Qatar or last World cup, pardon me. They lose to Saudi Arabia in their first match. And since that moment, not only have they not lost, but in his last eight World cup games, Messi now has 10 goals and has tied Miroslav Klose for the Most goals in World cup history. A guy who World cup performance was the only. Yeah, but. On his resume last year, went on a tear after losing their opening match, including two goals in the final, winning the title over France. Despite Mbappe's hat trick in the final, and then a hat trick of his own to start this World cup to where now Messi has the record all time for most World cup appearances, most World cup games, most World cup goals, second most World cup assists. It's. And the fact that he's 38 years old and still the best player on one of the best teams is just utterly remarkable. Like, truly utterly remarkable. What he's. What he's done. And when you put that up against the way it looks like this is going to go for Ronaldo, makes the goat debate and their longtime rivalry feel a little lopsided, and it's not totally fair. Ronaldo, while it's also his sixth World cup, you know, he's three years older and historically, not this year, but historically, hasn't had as good of a team as Messi with Portugal versus Argentina. But Messi being the defending champion and starting this tournament off with a hat trick. Cristiano Ronaldo finally having a team that's one of the favorites and starting off the way he did, which we'll get to in a moment, is not ideal for the literally millions and millions and millions of Cristiano Ronaldo fans.

very similar in that it's not long. It's not longevity, it's sustained excellence. And similar in that, while not as great as they once were over the course of an entire year, still have the ability to, in any given moment, be the greatest.

Nick Wright
you know, Messi is. You know, Messi's five, eight, so he's never. He's had a speed advantage, but that has lessened over the years. So for him, it's just the refined skill on his brain. And for LeBron, it's the. He's always had a size advantage that's still there, but doesn't he. His speeds also obviously diminish, but again, it's the brain and it's the understanding, but both, you know, the two goats who are absolutely ageless. And then we get to. We'll get to Cristiano Ronaldo, who is at the forefront of one of the two biggest. What I would consider, Matt, you know, first week of World cup matches, underachieving teams, we'll do them in a second. right, Damanzi, let's get to the flip side of the teams that have impressed
Podcast Co-host
me the most for the underachieving blue bloods. Spain entered as the favorite for the tournament but could not get a goal. Offers Kate Verde your team Brazil and Portugal found themselves in a couple of draws, but let's not forget you mentioned this earlier. Argentina lost their opener in 2022 and came back to win it all. Which disappointing start are you most worried about?
Nick Wright
All right, so it's gotta be Portugal. So Brazil didn't look great. Brazil was also playing an excellent team. Brazil was playing one of the 12 best teams in the tournament in Morocco so that you can. You can deal with Spain. Spain, I think ran into the perfect storm, so to speak, of a goaltender playing the absolute game of his life plus them not taking their opponent seriously. It's concerning, but it's not sound the alarm. Portugal's in a different spot because I think Portugal's got a real problem on their hands, which is an aging, aging legend that the coach might be afraid to put to a bench roll when they finally have a roster that if. If Ronaldo were out, they would be one of the favorites. And it is surprising to me that Ronaldo has not embraced the idea of. Listen, all. If I played five minutes in this World cup, if Portugal were to win the World Cup, I would get a ton of the credit because I am the inspiration for some of these guys. I am Portuguese soccer. I am, you know, most famous Portuguese people in world history. Ranked number one, Ferdinand Magellan, number two, Vasco da Gama, number three, Cristiano Ronaldo. That's it. A couple nautical explorers who circumnavigated the globe. And this soccer player. That's the list. He is a God there. And so they were. They were a big, you know, you know, in the Columbus era, if you will, Portugal was really cutting edge on figuring out the world's not flat, you know, East India Trading Company, the whole thing. And Portuguese got their handprints, fingerprints all over.
Colin Coward
And.
Nick Wright
So he doesn't have to be this.
Boost Mobile Advertiser
The.
Nick Wright
The star here. And I don't think he's capable of being the star. And so if he would be willing to say we put it on the TV show Thursday, they've got eight excellent attacking players. Three of them, four of them don't even start. One of them didn't even play on. On their game Wednesday. Like, hey, I can be a late game sub. Feel. Because the other thing the manager did was they. They benched. Not benched, but they subbed out a bunch of players on Wednesday, except for Ronaldo, who played the full 90. And then after the game, he was like, well, we need a goal scoring. He's one of the best goal scorers ever. I think it is. I think that you brought up LeBron earlier, Demonte. I think there is an element of him taking a different page out of LeBron's book, which is, yeah, what's best for the team is for me to take a smaller role, even if it's not what I want, 100%. But unlike LeBron, it is because the skills have diminished so much. That's what the team needs. And I do think, again, I obviously don't know this. I can't prove this. Just my gut. I do think that him seeing Messi and Mbappe do what they did put extra pressure on him. He felt it to where like, not so much. Mbappe really messy. It's like, oh, the other old guys getting a hat trick. I've got to be able to score. But in his last 10 games at major tournaments for the Portuguese national team, Ronaldo hasn't scored. And so this is not like a small sample of. He's. He's the oldest player to ever play in a World Cup.
Colin Coward
He.
Nick Wright
It's not fair to ask a ton out of him. But if you're going to be the striker for one of the favorites and you're going to play the full game, a lot is going to be asked out of you. So I would be concerned, if I were a Portuguese fan, that this is a canary in the coal mine of a bigger problem. And Colombia's a good team. Dr. Congo just got the draw with them. Now, Portugal will obviously beat Uzbekistan and maybe they'll beat Columbia. Columbia, but if they don't, they're not going to win the group. And again, I am more focused on the benefit of winning the group than I think most. But the winner of group K, obviously, which is their group, gets a third place team. And then most likely in the round of 16, you get the winner of group B, which is probably Switzerland, which is a fine team, but not a, you know, doesn't scare you. Portugal would be the big favorite of it. But the second place team in Group K, which is now something that's very possible for them in round, they get in round, in the round of 32, the second place team from Group L, which is probably going to be Ghana. And then more importantly, you get in the round of 16, most likely the winner of Group H, which can be Uruguay or it can be Spain. And all of a sudden it can get very late early. Like this is something I'm really focused on in this World cup be in a weird way because of the expanded field and what it means for the knockout rounds there is while it is easier than ever to make the knockout rounds, there is more benefit than ever to actually winning your group. And so, yeah, they have a margin of error, but it's not as big as you would think.
Boost Mobile Advertiser
And
Nick Wright
they, you know, Dr. Congo was supposed to be one of the worst teams in the field and they just drew him 1. 1. And so listen, if Spain comes out in their next game and looks flat again, then it's one of the biggest disasters in World cup history. I don't think that's going to happen. And Spain, I think, would I or
Podcast Co-host
did I would you in this upcoming game, are you ever going to Put money on Spain again.
Nick Wright
That was, that, that was uncalled for. That was, that was, you know what? That was, that was uncalled for.
Podcast Co-host
He said they're not going to lose.
Nick Wright
You know what? I am. I'm rebuilding from the Cape Verde, minus 1400 moneyline bet. And we'll, you know, lesson learned. But Spain, I think, understands, listen, we beat Saudi Arabia in our next game and then we play Uruguay to win the group and we'll be totally fine. I don't. And Brazil, I think, also understood, like, hey, we didn't play great against Morocco. We got the draw. And now here is something to watch for Brazil. And then we'll wrap the show soon because Brazil and Morocco, who are the two best teams in that group, tied each other and they both believe they can beat Scotland. This is, it's oddly bad news for Haiti because Brazil and Morocco are both going to be incentivized to try to score like six goals against Haiti because the winner of the group is if both Brazil and Morocco beat Scotland and beat Haiti, which maybe it's being a little disrespectful to Scotland, but I don't think so. The group's going to be determined on goal differential. I don't know if you can run the score up on Scotland. I'm sure both of these teams feel like they can run the score up on Haiti and so that'll be what determines that group. So I'm not worried about Brazil. It wasn't great, the team I picked when the whole thing drew in the first match. But Brazil, Morocco was one of the toughest opening, you know, group stage matches. There was one one draws. Fine. All right. Before we get to one other thing, let me remind you guys, today show is brought to you by our presenting sponsor, Hard Rock Bet. Florida's sportsbook. match day two, essentially, which is this coming week. I'm just going to tell you guys what I the best games of the day in my opinion, starting with Saturday. So Saturday we have two potentially awesome games. Netherlands, Sweden and Germany. Ivory Coast. Ecuador, Curacao not as good, but Netherlands, Sweden, which probably determines the winner of. Again, I don't have the groups memorized like which group is which. Netherlands Sweden is Group F probably determines the winner of Group F. And then Germany, Ivory coast almost assuredly, well, yeah, almost assuredly determines the winner of Group E. The both of those games are great. Sunday, the the one that is probably the most I mean you obviously want to see Spain bounce back against Saudi Arabia, but it would be stunning if they don't. Belgium, Iran is probably the best game of the day, but Uruguay, Cape Verde is interesting only in that you see if somehow Cape Verde can keep the momentum up from their game. Their draw against Spain, see what that goalkeeper can do. Uruguay, I thought looked awesome in their draw in in this earlier this week they had a bunch of goal scoring chances, just weren't able to really finish it off. Next Monday, the far and away the best game is Norway, Senegal. With that said, early in the afternoon you get to see Argentina, Austria, which you know, Messi against another good opponent. That game probably does determine if there's a true winner in that game, not a draw. The winner of their group Senegal desperately needs a result against Norway and Erling Holland, who we didn't mention earlier about, you know, all the guys who have been crushing so far. Tuesday there is one spectacular game, England against Ghana in the afternoon, four o'clock Eastern. That's one of the best games of the entire group stage. That game also could determine the winner of that group. Wednesday, kind of a lighter day as far as great games but Scotland Brazil jumps out to at least to me
Jeff T
as
Nick Wright
one of the as the best game of the day. But that also get Scotland Brazil is now we're into that would be Brazil's third game of the tournament. So now we're into you know, day three the final games of the group stage. But as far as for the second games of the group stage I just kind of gave you the ones to circle if you're getting into the World cup but don't really know, you know which games to look for. But starting on Wednesday we've got double headers because it's the final games of groups and it's the determines the winners of the group. So starting my goodness, this comes at you fast. Like starting on Wednesday it's six games a day over the next few days until the tournament. So until the group stage is over. Okay. I hope you guys enjoyed the little World cup show. I'm. It is such an awesome tournament and I promise you I'm not saying that because it's on fox. I also have one day demons A I should tell the story
Colin Coward
this.
Nick Wright
Let's just save this I because if I'm ever going to tell this story it should be not at the very end of a quick episode I have there's only been one like real bad fight I've been in in my life. Like bad. But I the you don't even know about this. I was 16 years old. But I mean when I say bad like like injuries like a bad fight and it was with my high school girlfriend's ex boyfriend and it was on his front lawn and his mom pulled up in the driveway and like saw it happening and that's what ended it. Oh no, that. That's what ended it.
Podcast Co-host
And.
Nick Wright
And again like whatever you imagine 16 year old Nick fighting another 16 year old from my small school. That's what it looked like. But it was. It was like when I say bad is long, you know what I mean is like the. But the only reason why am I bringing that up here that kid didn't go to my school. He did at one point, but didn't when we fought. And so I, you know, like, so I didn't see him regularly. And then I have to do the math on this. So I graduated in high school in 07. So this would have been an oath. No. I graduated high school in 07. I graduated college in 07, graduated high school in 03. So this would have happened in like 2000. So the 2002 World cup, like two years after this happens, I am somewhere. Where was the O2 World cup was in Korea. And I am for some reason out of town with my dad. And I'm in a hotel in the middle of the night and I go down to the lobby to watch the World cup because I know they're playing it like in the bar area, the World Cup. And I'm sitting there and I'm the only person there. And about round halftime of whatever game it was, I hear someone else come down and I'm like, oh, there's going to be someone to talk soccer with.3 in the morning at this hotel, wherever it was. And as you've probably figured out, it's this guy, this guy that last time I saw him, I'm on his front lawn fighting him. And it had been like two years later and it was the middle of the night and we both just wanted to watch soccer and I was like, hey, what's up, man? How's it going? And we just sat there and watched the game. It's true story. So I guess I did just. What are you gonna say? Like, what are you gonna say? Like you want it? Like, are we gonna fight again? Like, let's just watch the soccer game. Yeah, that's true story. All right, so I guess I did just tell the story at the end of the podcast. All right, talk to you. Thank you to Boost Mobile. Thank you to Hard Rock. Thank you so much to Volume and Blueduck. Talk to you guys beginning of the week. Enjoy the World Cup. Happy Father's Day, everybody. Happy Father's Day to Monze. Happy Father's Day, guys. Yeah, absolutely. Talk to you guys later. What's right?
