A biotech company called Phenonet just got FDA clearance to start a phase three trial for an inhaled version of cromolyn sodium, a drug that's been used safely for Asthma since the 1970s. What makes this one different is that it's not limited to people carrying the APOE4 gene, which is normally the gatekeeping criteria for Alzheimer's drugs. This trial includes carriers and non carriers both, and they're stratifying the data by genotype to see who actually benefits. Next up, researchers at the University of Zurich just found a group of cells they're calling regenerative astrocytes and what they do is genuinely wild. Astrocytes are the support cells that feed your neurons and keep brain tissue healthy. And the old assumption was that once you lose a bunch of them to injury or disease, the adult brain can't really replace them. Turns out that's wrong. These regenerative astrocytes gather around the edge of damaged tissue, divide, and then send the new nuclei from their daughter cells traveling across long distances through their own extensions through to repopulate the injury site and knit the whole network back together. The working assumption in neurology has been that adult brain damage is mostly permanent. You manage it, you don't reverse it. This says the brain already has a repair system built in. The researchers also mapped out the genes and signaling pathways that switch on during this process, which means there's now a target list for anyone trying to figure out how to boost this repair mechanism on purpose. And instead of waiting for the brain to do it on its own timeline, if you're dealing with any kind of brain injury or recovery, don't let anyone tell you the damage is simply permanent. Push for the most current research on regenerative therapies before you accept that as the final word. Another fun story here. The folks at King's College London took keratin, the protein extracted from sheep's wool, and turned it into a scaffold material for bone regeneration. They tested it against collagen, which has been the gold standard in bone and dental repair for decades. First on human bone cells in the lab and then in rats with skull defects large enough that they wouldn't heal naturally. Collagen still produced more total bone volume, but the bone grown with the keratin scaffold was more organized, more structurally sound, and closer to what natural, healthy bone actually looks like. This distinction is one to keep in mind. Because collagen is soft, it degrades fast, and it's never held up well for weight bearing bone, which is a real limitation if you're talking about any serious repair. Keratin held its structure during healing and integrated cleanly with the surrounding tissue, which are the two things you actually need for a scaffold to work in a real patient, not just a lab dish. A study out of Maau Polytechnic University tracked over 17,000 people from the UK Biobank and found that the standard device of 150 minutes of exercise a week only lowers cardiovascular risk by about 8 or 9%. To get real protection over 30% risk reduction, you need somewhere between 560 and 610 minutes a week. That's three to four times the official guideline. Only 12% of people in the study hit that number. This is exactly what I mean when I say public health guidelines are calibrated to be the bare minimum that keeps the average sedentary person from falling apart, not the amount that optimizes your health. Regulators built the 150 minute number as a floor, not a target. Now I know I've spoken on my show about how I normally do 15 to 20 minutes of exercise a week, but that's because I have a lot of fancy biohacking gear at my disposal. New research is finally clarifying something that's been controversial since the 1970s, when Linus Pauling claimed high dose vitamin C helped cancer patients and follow up studies using oral vitamin C found nothing. Turns out pollen had the mechanism right and the delivery method wrong. Oral vitamin C caps out around 200 micromoles per liter in your blood because your gut regulates how much gets absorbed. IV vitamin C skips that limit entirely and can push plasma levels up to 100 times higher. At those concentrations it starts generating hydrogen peroxide and that peroxide turns out to be selectively toxic to cancer cells because they carry less catalase to break it down than healthy cells do. A 2024 University of Iowa study found IV vitamin C plus chemotherapy doubled overall survival in advanced pancreatic cancer patients. This is one of the most satisfying vindications I've seen in a while. I've talked about IV vitamin C on this show many, many times and the mainstream response always dismissed Pauling ent instead of asking why oral and IV routes might behave so differently in the body, people make that same mistake with a lot of supplements, assuming a nutrient works the same way no matter how you take it. When dose and delivery change everything. This doesn't mean go find a wellness clinic and start doing 40 gram infusions on your own. But if you or someone you love is facing a cancer diagnosis, this is a conversation worth having with an integrative oncologist. If IV vitamin C comes up during cancer treatment, don't write it off as fringe or woo woo naturopathic and ask specifically whether your doctors are pairing it with chemotherapy, not swapping it in for chemotherapy. If you only remember one thing from this episode, make it the vitamin C story. It's not the flashiest data of the week, but it's proof of something I think people get wrong constantly. We spent 50 years treating Linus Pauling as a punchline because one study used the wrong delivery method and an entire avenue of cancer treatment got shelved as a result. That should bother you. Underneath the vitamin C details, this is really a story about how easily good ideas get killed by one bad experiment and a media cycle that never bothers to go back and check. Think about how often you've done the same thing in your own life. You try something once, it doesn't work and you file it away as doesn't work forever. When the actual problem was how you tried it, not whether it was worth trying. A diet that failed because you did it wrong, a supplement you wrote off because you took it at the wrong dose or the wrong time, a relationship approach, a business idea, a workout style all shelved permanently because of one flawed attempt nobody ever revisited. The lesson from Pauling isn't about vitamin C at all. It's to go back and check the things you already gave up on because you might be sitting on your own 50 year old mistake. I'll see you next time.
