Two trials are running in America right now. One is in a Fourth District courtroom in Provo, Utah, where prosecutors have spent months building the case against Tyler Robinson the hard way — eyewitness testimony, hours of security footage, forensic reports, DNA, handwriting on a shell casing, a .30-06 rifle. Slow, methodical, adversarial, and bound by rules. The accused is presumed innocent. The evidence has to survive cross-examination. The other trial is happening behind a podcast microphone. It has no judge, no jury, no burden of proof, and no standard for what counts as evidence. In that trial, the verdict is set by likes and shares, insight arrives as gossip and hearsay, and the culprit changes week to week. Millions of people are watching it and believing it. In this monologue, Jeremy Boreing argues that the distance between those two rooms is the distance between Western civilization and everything that came before it — and that we are walking backwards across it faster than most people realize. Jeremy starts with a viral video out of Dearborn, Michigan, and Allie Beth Stuckey's response to it, then widens the lens: the physical walls at the border are not the only ones crumbling. The walls in our minds are cracking too. Cross-cultural researchers describe the West as a guilt/innocence culture — an objective moral code, applied to everyone, where justice is blind and the claim outranks the man. Most of the world runs on honor and shame instead, where your worth is issued by the people watching and can be revoked by them, where an unanswered insult is a kind of social death, and where the sneer isn't a failure to make an argument — the sneer is the argument. That framework, drawn from the work of psychologists Angela K.-Y. Leung and Dov Cohen, explains an enormous amount about the American public square in 2026: why ad hominem now reads as authority, why the Republican primary debates of 2016 went the way they did, why Candace Owens told Andrew Wilson that objective debate standards are for the soft, and why the mob's verdict has quietly replaced the evidence. From there, Jeremy makes the case for how strange the West actually is — starting with the price tag. A fixed price is not natural. Corruption is natural. The haggle is natural. What the West built instead was impersonal exchange: contracts a court would enforce, property a king couldn't seize, honest weights and measures commanded by the God of Israel and enforced for centuries by a Church that treated cheating a stranger as a matter for your soul. Nobel-winning economist Douglass North traced the explosion of Western prosperity to that structure. Harvard anthropologist Joseph Henrich traced it back further — to the medieval Church banning cousin marriage, dissolving the clan, and creating something genuinely new in human history: the individual. And it explains John Adams, who defended the British soldiers after the Boston Massacre because he believed the truth was owed even to the enemy of his own people — and lost half his law practice for it. It explains a mother and father in southern Utah who looked at a surveillance image, recognized their own son, and drove him to the sheriff's office themselves. Set that against Tucker Carlson's 2015 rule that he would never criticize his brother in public, under any circumstances, even for mass murder. That's the tribe placed above the truth. Blood over justice. Half the world would hear it and nod. Jeremy's argument: the Left says the transaction was always theft, so take yours back. The post-liberal Right, borrowing from Carl Schmitt, says the tribe was always the point, so reward friends and punish enemies. Different roads, same destination — and neither is offering anything new. They are offering what everybody had before Christianity showed up. None of it was inevitable, and none of it is irreversible. We built the fixed price. We built the jury. We built the father who turns in his own son. Those were choices, and choices can be made differently tomorrow.
