Rome didn't fall because it ran out of great men. It fell because it reached a point where being great simply wasn't enough anymore.

Marcus Aurelius was arguably the most competent emperor Rome ever produced. Stoic philosopher trained from childhood. Disciplined administrator. Physically brave general who spent over a decade personally commanding the Danube frontier through the winters. If you designed a system to produce the ideal leader, Marcus is what it looks like when the system works exactly right.

And during his reign (161-180 AD), all three fault lines of the Roman system opened at the same time for the first time in history. The Antonine Plague — likely smallpox — arrived in 165 and killed somewhere between 5 and 10% of the empire, hitting the army disproportionately. The Marcomannic Wars broke on the Danube in 166 and never stopped for the rest of his life. In 175, one of his own most trusted generals declared himself emperor on nothing more than a false rumor that Marcus had died.

Marcus responded exactly right at every turn. He sold imperial jewelry to pay soldiers rather than debase the currency. He held the frontier personally for a decade. He put down the Cassius revolt without civil war. He knew, from his Stoic training and his study of Roman history, exactly what was happening to him. And he still couldn't stop it.

This is Episode 111 — the transitional episode between the "Life After the Fall of Rome" series and the upcoming Roman Republic series. It's the moment where the pattern first becomes visible at the peak of the empire. And the answer to "why couldn't Marcus stop it" is: the fault lines were built into the Roman model centuries before Marcus was born.
