So wanted to make sure that I thanked you guys and let you know why we're here. Now being in New York this week has been interesting because of course, this is the week of the UN General assembly, which I'm going to talk about in a minute. But this is also a very seminal week in news history. James Comey, who is the former FBI director under Donald Trump, was actually carried over from the Barack Obama administration, has been indicted. Donald Trump has wanted to indict who he sees as his enemies, basically anyone who made him mad or anyone who was involved in the things that bother him, like emotionally, right? This is the guy who wanted every comedian that makes fun of him fired. And in order to appease him, Paramount ended the show that Stephen Colbert took over, the Late show, which has existed for 30 years. They're like, we're just going to end that show because it'll make Trump happy if we do that so that we can get our mergers and acquisitions. You saw abc, Disney temporarily sidelined Jimmy Kimmel, who's back in a huge, huge, huge way. But still the next star. And Sinclair stations in about 60 different markets still won't let people watch Jimmy Kimmel even though he's back 15 million some odd views on YouTube. Biggest ratings that he's had in something like 20 years on the show. And he actually thanked Trump in a hilarious bit last night and showed how other people are like, f you, Trump, they get ratings too, but you couldn't watch it in New York or D.C. weirdly enough, because those are the two places that Trump might be. And so appeasing Trump is like the order of the day. And no one is a bigger appeaser to than Pamela Joe over at what used to be the Department of Justice, which is now basically Donald Trump's revenge factory. She he has wanted to, as we have talked about, try to indict the Attorney General of New York, Leticia James. They've got no case to do that, but he's still pushing to do it. He wants Adam Schiff to be indicted. He's named lots of people. Remember, Lock her up. He'd love to indict Hillary Clinton. Well, he's finally got Pamela Joe to serve him up somewhat after the previous U.S. attorney refused to do it because there is no case against James Comey. Donald Trump found a new flunky at the Department of Injustice who was willing to indict him. They're claiming that he lied to Congress. And what is this about Russia, Russia, Russia. As you will recall, the former FBI director James Comey in the Obama administration, when he was working in the FBI as FBI director at that time, investigated two things, Hillary Clinton and whether or not she took classified information out. Remember her emails investigated that actually upended the election. Right before the 2016 election announced that, hey, we're relooking at her laptops to see if she has classified data and material. Remember that her emails. The other thing that James Comey did was also allow the investigation to proceed against whether Donald Trump was getting undue assistance from Russia. We know that during that campaign, Trump's campaign was sharing data, polling data and information with the Russians. That's weird. He said the Russia, if you're listening, basically calling on them to hack Hillary Clinton's emails and find the 30,000 emails. Then they end. They ended up actually doing that. There was a legitimate investigation into his very strange ties that you read in the Mueller report to the Russians to try to help him get elected president of the United States. Fast forward to today. Donald Trump is Still mad about getting investigated. He still cries Russia, Russia, Russia, every time that he turns around. And now he has gotten Pamela, Joe and company to indict James Comey. It is really insane that this is happening in America. It makes the United States a lot more like Russia than it was yesterday. So that is the other huge news that you're hearing all over the news. That is the thing that's happening. And if I was anyone else on Donald Trump and Cash Patel's list, you know, they do have an enemies list. And even though Cash Patel claims he doesn't, he didn't. And in the case of Pam Bondi, she seems to have lied in her confirmation hearings about whether or not she was going to use the Department of Justice to, to get revenge on Trump's behalf. Let me play one clip. This is Donald Trump's actual former attorney. He actually represented Donald Trump in the past. He's now was. He was asked on CNN what Donald Trump was up to. And here is what he said.
Legal Expert/Commentator
Perfect by any means. But what we have here is a clear, vindictive prosecution, a clear, selective prosecution. We have a president, for the first time in history, ordering his Attorney General to indict his enemies. And the Attorney General, instead of being the independent force that she's supposed to be saying, yes, sir, how fast can I get that done for you? I think if she's concerned about justice for people who have misled the country, reflection on her confirmation proceedings is probably in order because she talked about even handed justice. And this is not that. I think that the case is subject to motions to dismiss for vindictive prosecution and selective prosecution. I think likewise, it's a very weak case, at least based on what we publicly know. And we publicly know an unusual amount about this case because of the Justice Department internal Inspector General's investigation, where he found the person that Comey allegedly authorized to leak the information not credible and found that Comey was credible. So I think this is a very problematic case for the government to bring, but I think the way in which they brought it is problematic for the entire country. And this is either the end of the rule of law in America or it's a tipping point against the authoritarian activity that we've seen from this president and his Attorney General.
Joy Reid
And that's where we are. So that is that one big piece of news. But on this other side of what I start, where I started with, which was the United Nations General assembly, the appeasement of Donald Trump is not really going so well. The elevator did not appease the escalator, I should say, did not appease him. When he and Melania tried to go up the escalator, it said, no, you're not going up me. You better walk the prompter. The teleprompter wasn't working and he. And now his administration is literally saying they want to investigate the United nations for supposedly sabotaging the escalator and the teleprompter. Seriously, it's old. It's an old building. Get over it. But he's mad about that. He appears to have had, like, a weird argument with Melania on the plane. There's this weird video of them seeming to, like, point at each other and, like, looking, like, really angry and looking. Lots of speculation about what was going on there. So it doesn't appear that Melania had a great time. One of the other reasons Melania might not have had the best time is that the president of the country she came from, Natasia Piersk Musar, who is the president of Slovenia, the female president of Slovenia gave one of the epic speeches at the un really tearing apart the entire world's failures to combat the huge issues of our day. Here's Natasia Pierced Mossad.
Various UN Speakers / Mahmoud Abbas / Sanaa Beg
If we, the leaders of this planet, can offer nothing but terror, conflict, pollution, fear, inequalities and war to 8 billion people, then we must confront the truth. We are complicit in crimes against our civilization and our planet. And not just US heads of states, but leaders of international institutions, institutions, CEOs, and every individual with the power to make a difference share this responsibility. None of us can claim ignorance of what is at stake. If we believe in human dignity for all, we must deliver more. A world that fulfills lives, not threatens them. We must say yes to inclusive multilateralism and a resounding no to multipolarism. Let us show that this General assembly can and will make a difference as it has often done before. Let us demonstrate that we reject arrogance, hatred and willful blindness to a lack of equality and justice, to wars of aggression, crimes against humanity and genocide because they tear us apart for generations.
Joy Reid
And then she closed that epic read with this very pointed message about Gaza and the world's failure to protect the people there.
Various UN Speakers / Mahmoud Abbas / Sanaa Beg
We did not stop the Holocaust. We did not stop the genocide in Rwanda. We did not stop the genocide in Srebrenica. We must stop the genocide in Gaza. There are no excuses anymore. None.
Joy Reid
Now I will note that the President of Slovenia was not the only leader at the United nations who made news when it came to Palestine. Over starting On Sunday, major Western nations broke with their decades of refusing to recognize a Palestinian state. Now, Palestinians declared their state back in 1988, and this was at the time when you started to have this breakdown between the plo, the Palestine Liberation Organization, and this new organization called Hamas, which actually was created in the late 1980s out of dissatisfaction with the PLO, which then became the Palestinian Authority. Just so that you know that history, but most of the world has recognized, immediately recognized Palestine as a state. And you can see on this map that we're going to show you, this is the way that the world really looked. The west and Europe basically standing alone in refusing to recognize a Palestinian state. And the United States being the glaring Western nation that refused. But now add Canada to the countries that recognize a Palestinian state. They made their announcement on last Sunday. You now have Australia joining the rest of the world, the global south, in recognizing a Palestinian state. You also have Great Britain making a huge announcement that they too now recognize a Palestinian state, as well as France. And in that case, the. The French president came, came to the United States and actually in New York did a conference with Saudi Arabia in which Emmanuel Macron and the Saudi leader, the guy with the Bonesaw guy, talked about how to actually bring a Palestinian state to fruition. So, big news when it comes to Palestine. At the United nations, several leaders actually also took to the podium to declare their support for a Palestinian state and their outrage over the genocide that is continuing to happen in Gaza and also the fact that the United nations has adjudicated that apartheid is taking place in the occupied West Palace Bank. So Israel not really facing a lot of, getting a lot of support, let's just put it that way. Inside of the United nations. Now, on the direct issue of Israel and Palestine and their participation in the United Nations General Assembly, I will note that Mahmoud Abbas, who is the leader of the Palestinian people, he's the leader of the Palestinian Authority, they have leadership role, the leadership role in the west, in the occupied west bank, while Hamas has the leadership role in Gaza. He wanted to come to the United Nations General assembly and address the world and address really the growing support that his nation and the embrace that they're getting around the world. But he was not able to because the United States State Department under Marco Rubio denied him a visa. They wouldn't even let him come to the United States to address the world, denied him access to this country. And so he had to address the UN via video. And here is a little bit of what he had to say.
Various UN Speakers / Mahmoud Abbas / Sanaa Beg
We say to our sons and daughters in the homeland, in the exile and in the diaspora. No matter how much our wounds bleed and no matter how long this suffering lasts, it will not break our will to live and survive. The dawn of freedom will emerge and the flag of Palestine will fly high in our skies as a symbol of dignity, steadfastness and being free from the yoke of occupation. Palestine is ours. Jerusalem is the jewel of our heart and our eternal capital. We will not leave our homeland. We will not leave our lands. Our people will remain rooted like the olive trees, firm as the rocks. We will rise from under the rubble to rebuild and to send from our blessed and holy land the messages of hope and the sound of truth and right and build the bridges of just peace for the people of our region and the entire world. May the peace and mercy and blessings of God be upon you.
Joy Reid
And amazingly enough, Mahmoud Abbas has made it very clear that he's willing to work with even this really diminished version of the United States, this autocratic, Putin like version of the United States, in order to to ensure that his people finally have the state that the UN has promised them for decades. Now onto his opponent on the other side, Benjamin Bibi Netanyahu. He was allowed to come to the United States even though he is an adjudicated war criminal, according to the International Court of Justice. He had to take a circuitous route to get to New York because had his, his airplane gone through the airspace of any country, including Slovenia, by the way, who reiterated that they would arrest Benjamin Netanyahu if he tries to ever come to Slovenia. So Melania's country said, don't, you can't come here. Britain has made it clear because they are a signatory to the International Court of Justice that he can't come there. He would get arrested. But he was able, of course, to come to the United States because Donald Trump is always at the service of whatever the Israeli government wants to do. And I hate to say it, but Biden probably would have let him come too, because he did. So it's not like that would be a huge difference if Biden were there or if Trump were there, but he came nonetheless. So he was allowed to come right over, waltz right into New York and give a speech. The Joy Reid show tonight is brought to you by the Tamsen Show. It's real talk. Smart, unfiltered, and deeply relatable. Whether you're facing brain fog, hot flashes, ooh, I can relate to that. Or a total life reset. The Tamsen show is your guide to clarity, strength, and connection as you move forward. New episodes drop every Wednesday, wherever you get your podcasts, because you shouldn't have to go through this in the dark. And you'll never again have to ask, why didn't anyone tell me? Listen to the Tamsen Show. Your strongest chapter starts here. But what happened when he took to the podium is actually kind of epic. Here is the video showing what happened when Benjamin Netanyahu took to the podium at the United Nations General Assembly. Look at that. Watch all the people walking out. They're like, nope, we ain't gonna sit there and listen to you, war criminal. You can talk to the chairs. And that's what he did. He literally spoke to a mostly empty chamber to essentially reiterate that they are gonna keep killing Palestinians as many and as much as and as long as they want, and that this war would never end, essentially, that they're gonna keep going and they're gonna keep this war going as long as they want, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. It is an incredibly sad state of affairs. And that brings me to what I want to show you guys now. Earlier this summer, way early in the early summer, in, like, late June, July, we spoke with the leader of Medicine Sans Frontiere Canada, Doctors Without Borders Canada. Her name is Sanaa Beg. And at that time, Doctors Without Borders was still able to operate inside of Gaza. It's been very difficult for aid organizations. You've seen the flotillas that couldn't get to Gaza, that have gotten detained and taken away. By the way, Spain is supporting a new flotilla that's on the way there. But Doctors Without Borders is a volunteer organization that has tried their best, along with other aid organizations, to try to help the starving and dying in Gaza to this point. As of Today, more than 60,000 people that we know of have died and been killed in that war as a result of what Israel is doing. And more than a million face mass starvation and famine. And so we spoke with Ms. Begg about what Doctors Without Borders was doing at that time. And so keep in mind as you watch this interview that everything that she talks about and that she spoke with us about earlier this summer is now 10 times worse. The starvation, 10 times worse, the, the number of deaths much higher than what you're going to hear her talk about. It is so tragic that we have this world body that's meeting right now in the city where I am in that is helpless to do anything but give in many cases, very moving speeches to try to stop what's going on. But they don't be able, they haven't been able to stop Bibi Netanyahu from turning up in person at that body when Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of the Palestinians cannot, and from ordering the mass death of the people whose land he would very much like to take for his country. So listen to this interview and I'll see you on the other side. And joining me now is Sanaa Beg, who is the executive director of Medicine Sans Frateur, AKA Doctors Without Borders Canada. Sana, thank you so much for being here.

Thank you for having me.
Joy Reid
So let's talk about what we know in terms of the updates on the death toll in Gaza.
Sponsor/Advertiser
55,000 people killed so far, about a 500 that we know of killed directly when they've been either en route to or attempting to get food from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. And we know this because we've also received mass casualties as a result of those incidents around those regions.
Joy Reid
We've seen videos that are horrific of, you know, children trying scurrying to get flour, of people being drones, you know, hit with drone strikes and killed while trying to, you know, carry flour back from aid sites. Is that something that we're seeing online that is in reality happening? Because there are questions about whether those incidents are real.
Sponsor/Advertiser
So, Joy, we're not I can tell you what happens when we receive patients and what our patient and staff testimonies tell us. So we're not in the direct sites of where the aid distribution is being carried out by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. But as I said, we do receive mass casualties as a result of those. And very much a lot of our work is anchored in being impartial, neutral, having the highest regard for medical ethics and really bearing witness to what we see firsthand, either through the testimonies of our patients and of our staff. So in regards to that, I can maybe, maybe let's zoom out a little bit beyond what's happening in that particular location and the buzz that we're seeing in the news about that particular aid distribution site and the fallout and otherwise from it. But what are we Talking about here, how long has it been now since this war started? October of 2023, I just shared with you 55,000 people killed, 1.9 million people on the verge of malnutrition. I can give you more and more statistics, but that's the, that's the psychic numbing of this, is that if we really only look at the numbers and we only get sort of overwhelmed by the gravity of the situation, we would essentially feel like there's nothing that we can do. And really, you know why I think it's important for us to have this conversation today? Because we are at a moment in contemporary times where we need to overcome passive acceptance and it's time for collective action. If you were to take a look at the, just the trajectory of what the humanitarian aid ecosystem looks like in Gaza today. I mean, tell me you're not as baffled as I am. You know, we, we talk about. First off, let's, let's start with the funding for what is supposed to reach the occupied Palestinian territories. According to UN OCHA, their financial tracking services, oh, only 14.5% of the 2025 funding requirement have been met in the occupied Palestinian territories. So now you take that sliver of money that is available to get funding and then you put that into humanitarian aid trucks and you bring them to the border near the Rafah crossing and they are waiting there, wanting to come in. It's been now a few months since the UN World Food Program announced that they have depleted all of its stock of food supplies in Gaza. The World Central Kitchen no longer has enough ingredients to make food to be able to serve in community kitchens. Our staff talk to us about, you know, my colleagues from, from Canada, some of our international mobile staff, and also our locally hired staff. You know, there was a time when there would be lines outside of bakeries. Bakeries don't exist anymore. We have long been hearing from our colleagues speaking about the lack of clean water, the lack of edible food. Disturbing stories, but they need to be told. Our staff spoke of eating, being having to resort to eating pet food, and this was months ago to having to find creative solutions to how to filter dirty water to make it usable and drinkable. We're seeing an increased number of not only children coming in showing severe signs of malnutrition, but lactating mothers who were malnourished when they were pregnant and now are unable to feed their babies. They come in for highly nutritious food. And the sad reality is as the burden that any woman bears as a mother in any Part of the world. They choose then to take that and give that to their children instead of having that nutrition for themselves. So a vicious endless cycle in many ways. And so back to the ape supply that that is. You know, the trucks are coming in. It's a trickle in an ocean of needs really. And what they come in with, you know, we need routine supplies of painkillers, of Tylenol, of sterile gloves, of masks. There's a, there's a chronic lack of fuel. And what that means is that we don't have our washing machines, our laundry machines are unable to run. So there's no clear clean sheets in the hospitals. I mean, just the domino effect of each of these things. There is an iceberg underneath what we're seeing as really just the tip of the, the issues that we hear the headlines about. A couple of handful of trucks come in. And so now you have those trucks that do come in. You have to remember almost 70 to 80% of this region is considered a no go zone. So when these supplies come in, they come in into those red zones. And so then you have to find, then there's a logistical nightmare of having to find staff and individuals who would get on those trucks and venture into the red zones to able to be able to get that supply and then bring it back to the very small fraction of area that is still habitable and considered safe. And then so, you know, drops, as I've said, trickles of aid that come in in an ocean of needs. And then those are in place. And our teams that are trying to work day in and day out to provide emergency medical care, we have no guarantees of safety ourselves. I mean, we have seen in front of our eyes clear violations of international humanitarian law. We have seen what was considered unacceptable today being completely normalized. And it is an unfortunate new normal that we're living in. I mean, this is just a, a microcosm, a snippet of what we're seeing in Gaza as being told by our staff.
Legal Expert/Commentator
Yeah.
Joy Reid
I mean, and are there even their hospitals left? How many hospitals, if you know, are even functioning at this point in Gaza? Because we know that the IDF has bombed hospitals.
Sponsor/Advertiser
Yeah. There is not a single hospital that is fully functional. There are hospitals that are standing, there are hospitals that are making do. Is any one of them untouched by attacks? Is any one of them full and flooded with the supplies they need? No. 0. We often talk about Al Nasser Hospital, which is in southern Gaza. It is absolutely a lifeline for the patients that need critical medical care. It's the Kind of setup that you need to be able to refer patients, to be able to give them blood transfusions to, to be able. Be able to provide them surgical care and trauma care and physiotherapy and such. Unfortunately, this Nasser Hospital is also located in a very precarious geographical space, often coming into the zones of evacuation orders. It is dangerously close to attacks that have taken place. I speak to our staff who work in Gaza and they talk about, you know, I ask them, what's your routine day looking like? They're like, well, we know that this part of the hospital was attacked, and so we're now having to go in and see how many staff can we bring in to reasonably be able to carry out the work that we do with the, of course, dwindling supplies that we have as well. Right. So think about, you know, life doesn't stop when there is a war in full force. People still have diabetes, people still need cancer treatment, people still need ivf. And so we're finding our doctors having to make impossible, painful decisions about rationing out medications, donating their own blood, amputating with no anesthesia. This has been happening for months now, for years now, and being absolutely helpless, seeing parents stand in front of their child being amputated, child screaming in pain, knowing they can't do anything, and neither can we. The moral injury that we've had to sustain, that my colleagues have had to sustain as MSF staff working there now, is unbearable.
Joy Reid
And we know now that, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, that Gaza is now home to the largest number of child amputees in the world. What kinds of injuries, and correct me if I'm wrong on that, and what kinds of injuries are your staff seeing in these hospitals? What types of injuries?
Sponsor/Advertiser
We're seeing gunshot wounds, we're seeing trauma injuries, we're seeing people with their legs blown off, we're seeing arms blown off, we're seeing deep fractures cutting through the flesh. You know, you need those, the surgical equipment. So, you know, once, once somebody has a fracture, you need. This piece of. The word escapes me. Piece of equipment with, like needles in place to keep your, to keep your arm intact. Those are stuck in, in supplies. And so the chances of recovery for someone, even after an unending ordeal of surgeries and such, to be able to rehabilitate themselves is nearly impossible. And speaking of the injuries we see, let's also talk about, you know, the recovery process that's required. So as I said, for those that have been amputated or have had Life changing fractures and injuries of that nature, not only do they require rehabilitation, they also require almost double the amount of caloric intake for their body to be capable of curing itself. So our patients are trying to heal in an almost impossible environment. And then again on the injuries, those are the injuries that we see. There's of course, injuries that you can't see. The mental trauma that children, the elderly, women, men, all have, you know, across the gender spectrum have had to deal with in Gaza are things that we cannot imagine. Many of our staff speak of having no hope left. They, they leave their children behind in camps while they come to, to work and they hope that their children are still there when they return from work. And often when we ask them to take a break, you know, go home, like, what is there to do? What is there to look forward to? Very early on in this, in this crisis that we're seeing in Gaza, we, our mental health experts would speak about defying all definitions, the term ptsd, post Traumatic Stress Disorder. There is no post. There is no opportunity for a post. It is an unending ongoing trauma and books have not been written yet. Our teams don't know how to handle this situation which has defied expectations and definitions all across the board and I.
Joy Reid
Guess to sort of, sorry to bring this to a close, it is so tragic and so horrifying and I'm assuming your doctors don't feel safe either from sniper attacks or from attacks. There's no protection for them.
Sponsor/Advertiser
There's no protection where we are one amongst many in a larger ecosystem of providing humanitarian aid who are feeling failed, failed by, by Israel in safeguarding our rights to be able to carry out humanitarian aid in an unimpeded way. Failed by international humanitarian laws and countries that should be setting an example and standing up and demanding that there is unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to come through to Gaza, that medical personnel, medical institutions should not be a target. I mean, that is enshrined in international humanitarian law. It is a deeply distressing situation. But I must say before we close, this is not a moment for despair. In our view, we have no choice but to be hopeful. And we have no choice, at least for the sake of our patience patients and our staff who wake up every day knowing that they have no choice but to get through the day and to hope that the next day is a better day ahead. It is our responsibility to still speak out, to still bear witness to what we see and to continue holding our leaders across the world, including in the United States, in Canada, and elsewhere to demonstrate moral courage and political will and stand up for humanity. It is about time.
Joy Reid
Sanaa Beg, thank you so much. MSF is such a brave organization and doing God's work. And it is so tragic what is going on in Gaza and unnecessary because, you know, the government in Israel could stop at any time, but apparently they are not going to anytime soon. Thank you so much. We appreciate your time and all the work that your organization and your and you are doing for the children's women and men in Gaza. Thank you.

Thank you, Joy. Pleasure talking to you.
Joy Reid
Sanaa Beg of Doctors Without Borders Canada, thank you so much for speaking with us. We're going to bring her back. We want to definitely speak with her about and get an update on what is happening to the extent they can even access Gaza. Note that journalists cannot verify any of the things that you just heard because, number one, Israel does not allow journalists to operate freely in Gaza. There's no Reuters and Associated Press journalists that are able to access that war zone, even though they've been able to access every previous war zone in the history of modern warfare. And also they're killing the journalists who have been able to operate, who by and large have been Palestinians themselves, who are taking up their cameras and their cell phones and trying every with everything that they've got to try to report what's happening. So we have not very many eyes on what's happening in Gaza. It's incredibly dangerous for anyone to try to report from there. So we're just thankful for anyone who could give us the news and information about what we're seeing in that poor beleaguered country. But at least that now has the recognition of most of the world, more than there are 193 recognized countries on in the world now. About 150,000 of them recognize Gaza as a legitimate state. Sadly, not our country, not the United States. Hopefully that will change. All right, guys, I want to thank you all for tuning in to the Joy Reid show. It's been a hoot. We're gonna go off and get our taping done. So make sure that you tune in to have I GOT News for you. It airs every Saturday at 9:00pm Eastern on CNN. So guys, tune in, please. Definitely want y' all to check me out when I'm on that show and also to come back next week because we've got a lot more coming for you. Live show Monday night will be live. We'll be in the chat chatting with y' all and we'll be here with a lot of great guests, lots of new news. Probably. Probably lots of new tea because all sorts of terrible things, you know, are gonna happen over the weekend because, you know, this is the way it is. So thank you very much and we'll see you guys. Thank you for tuning in on YouTube, Spotify, Substack. Be sure to like and subscribe and share. Make sure that we grow this independent media because this is the only way we're gonna get through this mess if we have independent voices who can say the things and say them without fear and without favor. Thank you all so much. Have a great weekend and we'll see you on the next the Joy Reach show. Getting back to the basics, grassroots level.

Episode: Power V. Humanity Ft. Sana Bég | September 26, 2025
Host: Joy-Ann Reid
Guest: Sanaa Beg (Doctors Without Borders Canada)
In this special edition, Joy-Ann Reid broadcasts from Harlem during UN General Assembly week, diving deep into the latest political upheavals in the U.S. and the global humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The episode examines the rising authoritarian practices in U.S. governance, major shifts in international recognition of Palestine, and the dire state of Gaza through a poignant interview with Sanaa Beg of Doctors Without Borders Canada. Reid’s signature blunt, insightful style shapes the discussion around themes of power, humanity, and global accountability.
Joy Reid covers the unprecedented indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, engineered by a Trump-nominated DOJ (now led by Pamela Joe), which she laments as a shift from justice toward political vendetta.
Broader Context: Trump “wants every comedian that makes fun of him fired,” with media companies capitulating to stay in favor (e.g., The Late Show's cancellation, Jimmy Kimmel restrictions).
Legal expert commentary:
"We have a president, for the first time in history, ordering his Attorney General to indict his enemies. And the Attorney General, instead of being the independent force that she's supposed to be, [is] saying, yes, sir, how fast can I get that done for you?"
— [06:50]
Tipping Point Warning:
"This is either the end of the rule of law in America or it's a tipping point against the authoritarian activity that we've seen from this president and his Attorney General."
— [08:06]
UNGA Week Atmosphere (08:13–17:45)
"If we, the leaders of this planet, can offer nothing but terror, conflict, pollution, fear, inequalities and war to 8 billion people, then we must confront the truth. We are complicit in crimes against our civilization and our planet."
— [09:40]
"We must stop the genocide in Gaza. There are no excuses anymore. None."
— [11:13]
Western Nations Shift on Palestine (11:21–15:58)
"Palestine is ours. Jerusalem is the jewel of our heart and our eternal capital. We will not leave our homeland... We will rise from under the rubble to rebuild and…build the bridges of just peace."
— Mahmoud Abbas, [14:40]
Netanyahu’s UN Speech Boycotted (15:58–17:45)

Realities on the Ground
“Aid that comes in…is a trickle in an ocean of needs, really.”

Joy Reid’s language is candid, urgent, and sharply critical—especially regarding the abuse of power and the international community’s inaction. The episode’s mood alternates between outrage, sorrow, and a determined plea for awareness and action, echoed by Sanaa Beg’s mixture of despair and hope in the face of devastating humanitarian conditions.
This episode delivers a sobering analysis of both the crisis of American democracy and the deepening tragedy in Gaza. While the UN offers stirring words, and the world shifts towards acknowledging Palestinian statehood, workers on the ground like Doctors Without Borders face almost insurmountable barriers—yet continue to bear witness and demand global moral courage. Listeners are left informed, moved, and challenged to consider not just the politics of the moment, but their own role in upholding humanity.
