So today, checking in behind the scenes of the grind, I am feeling a bit relieved. If you guys listened to our last episode where we checked in behind the scenes of the grind, you know that I've been just really trying to figure out a lot. I feel like I'm always trying to figure out a lot. Like, y' all probably like, girl, you always figuring it out. And that's why I'm always at happy hour, because, like, one thing that's gonna happen, life gonna be kicking our behinds. We gonna go have a cocktail. No, I'm joking. Yeah. I am always figuring things out. I am. And I'm not afraid to admit that I think a lot of people get caught up in, like, the things that you achieve to forget and forget about how it feels to be honest about the things that you haven't done well and the things that you have not achieved.

I'm just feeling relieved. I'm feeling relieved that I was able to, like, come here, talk to you guys about it, kind of make some sense about it. Still trying to figure out whether or not I want to do some content around it or not, or if I really just want to sit with this within myself for a bit. And once I do, then open it up to a broader conversation with everybody outside of the podcast. See, that's how much I love y'. All. Y' all get my news exclusively, and first, y' all get my takes on the news exclusively. And first, even if it's news that I don't break myself, but y' all also get my real life exclusively, and sometimes first, because, I don't know, I just feel like, you know, y' all, my little riders. Like, this is like, a real community. I feel like y' all got me. I got y'. All. But, yeah, I'm feeling relieved about just being honest about where I'm at, you know, where my headspace is at, what I need to do better. And I feel relieved that in the midst of me feeling like all of this, my mind didn't continue to stay in that, like, push through, push through, push through. You got to push through mindset. My mind actually said, you need to sit down. You need to shut down. You need to breathe, you need to go touch some grass. You need to like, woo, saw it out right now because that even that is like a very big mental shift for me. That's not normally how I operate in situations like that. And normally in situations like that, I don't take the time to like feel things and you know, all of that. I just, I just, I mean it is life. It is what it is life. Be life. And in the midst of that, like, things still need to get done. You got to push through regardless. The show always must go on. It's, it's how I've always lived my life. And the show still goes on. If you take a minute to be like, let me collect myself, my thoughts, my feelings, my breathing, the show still goes on. I'd say it's a family crime drama. Okay, Right. And it has an intensity and action that you would you would, you would feel you received in the action film. And it does things that the other series don't do because we kind of jump timelines throughout the episodes and stuff like that. This. So you'll see things and go, oh, like things flashing back and things going to different, you know, backwards and forwards.

And what I get a chance to do is communicate what they feel to the network before it gets like it didn't. They start developing reputations and being difficult or doing things, but they're comfortable expressing how they feel to me, you know, now I'm at a stage where I can, you know, finance and license the project instead of giving it to the networks for them to own.

So let's get on into the latest. You know, speaking about, you know, that moniker, the show must go on. I always think about what it's like for people who are in circumstances where the show must go on. But, like, you just don't have that fight within you, if even for a time period. And the reason why I say I always think about people in, in this situation is because, you know, and I talk a lot about this. I talked about in the last episode with my mom being a cancer survivor. I got a grandma that's 88 years old. We'd have been through some things together. Y' all. Okay. When it comes to us and just fighting for their lives, literally in this, in this medical, that isn't always the best of black women. And we've been at points where we just didn't have nothing else to give. We were just, you know, and we didn't know what was going to happen next. But we always got another day to figure it out. This next story that we have coming up is a bit different than that because Tanisha Warner, the widow of Malcolm Jamal Warner, sat down with Gayle King for CBS Mornings. And she's getting really, really personal about what it's like, you know, being here now on this earth without her husband, Malcolm Jamal Warner, who didn't get another day to figure it out. For those of you guys who do not remember our reporting around that Malcolm Jamal Warner, you know, icon, legend, actor, poet, humanitarian, father, son, husband passed away. He was in Costa Rica with his family and, and it was from an accidental drowning that took place his wife and his eight year old daughter. And they were out and they were swimming and he, his daughter, I believe is now nine, but I believe at the time she was eight. But he was, they were, him and his daughter were out and they were swimming. They did like a morning swim and they got taken over by like currents and there were people locally who saw what was happening. They jumped in to try and help them. They were able to put Malcolm Jamal Warner's daughter on like a board, like a, like one of those like surfboards and get her to the shore. They got him to the shore and tried to resuscitate him and like help him, but he did not survive. So there's been ongoing conversation around this because Tanisha Warner recently filed a lawsuit against Malcolm Jamal Warner's mother, Ms. Pamela Warner, who is the head of his estate. She alleges that the estate is almost 20 years old and that Malcolm Jamal Warner was in the process of updating the estate and, like, the wheels and all the things that he needed to best protect his daughter and his wife as well, because the estate that he was working with was one that had not been set in place, you know, for some time. I think he was, like, 20 years old at the time that that happened. The estate planning originally. So Tanisha is claiming, like, you know, he was in the process of changing around a few things, but they didn't get to it. So now she has gotten to the point where she's having issues financially, keeping up with things as a single mom and just, you know, making payments. And there were certain things that were promised to her within their prenup as far as, like, you know, certain insurances and just different things just in case of anything that hadn't happened. And she's asking for it to happen. Now, Tanisha says that she did try to settle this in private, but according to Tanisha's statement that she gave to People magazine, it got to a point where she was trying to settle it in private, and she couldn't. Now, Malcolm Jamal Warner's mother has not spoken on this lawsuit directly yet. There was something that she had posted around the time that we were learning around this, learning about this lawsuit where she had talked about, you know, finding out that people were evil, but nothing directly to this lawsuit. So I don't know if that was her response to the lawsuit. And I. And I, you know, reached out to just see, you know, if anything, was there anything. I tried to give it some time because, as you guys know, three days ago, four days ago now, four days ago, Malcolm Jamal Warner, his mom, you know, his family, separately, his wife, his daughter, were having to deal with the anniversary of his passing. So it's tough. This is a tough week for the family. But Tanisha Warner sat down and did an interview. Now, to preface the conversation, in the timeline of this interview, the interview actually took place prior to the lawsuit. Gayle King did not know anything about the lawsuit at the time of the interview. Let's take a listen to Gayle King talking about that, because when they put out the clip to tease the interview, she wanted to make that clear. Let's take a listen.

I was. I was very moved by Tanisha, and we should say we did this interview before the lawsuit. I was just as surprised as everybody to hear that a lawsuit had been filed. I found her to be very sweet, very loving, very kind. And I reached out to her, and she said it was a formality. This is not a lawsuit that she wanted to file because it's based on what? Malcolm. They had a prenup. And apparently there's an issue. Not. Apparently there is an issue with Malcolm's mom and Tanisha, clearly. But this is something that she just. She did the interview because she wanted to thank people who have reached out to her.

She's not talked about any of this. Yes, yes. Not any of this. And also, she's getting a lot of support on social media. Says if we still miss him, imagine how she feels. Grief is love with no place to go. You know, I've always been told a daughter's a daughter for all of her life. A son is a son till he takes as a wife. I see that in my own house. Once you get married, it becomes a new responsibility. And I think most people are feeling Malcolm would have wanted his wife and his child to be provided for. I just hope they can work it out. Because for Pamela, she lost. It was her only child. It's her baby, so I understand her pain as well.

Yeah. You know, right now, everybody, like all of his family members and everyone who has lost him, they are grieving. You know, it's been the biggest loss for all of us. All of us right now. My daughter and I are just like,

Yeah, you know, it's the emotional capacity that I have can be very limited sometimes, you know, and so I have to, for myself decide what do I have to give right now in this moment. And whatever I have to give. The first person to get that is my daughter. And then the second is myself.

listening to it would have been a hindsight like knowing that she knew the lawsuit was, you know, being filed, knowing that the, you know, the lawsuit was most likely going to become public because of who Malcolm Jamal Warner is to us. I was gonna say was, but it's just crazy talking about him In a past 10 is to us, you know, as a community, as the world, it would become public. Listening to her answer, it sounds like she was trying her best to make it understood that right now I don't even know if she could have gave an answer about the relationship. And with her knowing that she did the best thing she could in the moment because it seems like there is a fracture of some sort within the relationship following the lawsuit right now moving away from the lawsuit, this interview again because it took place before the lawsuit was filed, really talked a lot about, you know, what Tanisha and her daughter's life have been like following Malcolm Jamal Warner's passing. And Tanisha put up this post on her Instagram and I really have not yet to see Tanisha's Instagram much at all ever. When they mentioned it in the interview, I was like, oh, I didn't even see that post when she posted it. But Tanisha put up a post just talking about their wedding anniversary in September, right? This was following the passing of Malcolm Jamal Warner and they talk about it in an interview. But I want to read you the caption for the post. It's a photo from their wedding and she says, thank you for holding us in so much love during this tender time tomorrow marks Our anniversary. My heart is wide open. For the first time, I'm sharing a glimpse of the love that begin it all. I can still hear my husband's laugh, still feel the way he made room for every part of me. Every tear, every dream. Today, in his honor, my daughter and I are launching river and Ember and officially opening the Warner Family Foundation. Today we carry the legacy my husband and I begin, one that nurtures children's inner light and gives young artists the freedom to create outside the lines. This is love. Still moving, still making, still carrying us forward. That was on September 12, 2025. She posted that. And then when you swipe over from that photo, there is, like, you know, some background information on the organization she was talking about. River and Ember. It says, river and Amber were not born. I'm sorry. Was born. Not only from the knowledge. As a doctor of psychology. Tanisha is referencing herself. She's a doctor of psychology, but from my own journey with grief and love. It's about creating rituals that outlast us, the kind our children will carry as legacy. River and Amber begin with two simple forces. The steady flow that carries us forward and the quiet warmth that keeps us alive inside. My husband embodied both. His presence was a river, steady, sure, and always moving forward. What matters. His spirit was an ember, glowing with encouragement, igniting possibility in those around him. His way of seeing the world, that children's inner light is worth tending with. Care and consistency is the heartbeat of everything we create here. This work is not just my offering from. This work is not just my offering to families. It is a continuation of the love and presence that shaped our own. My husband believed deeply, intending not only to the inner light in children, but in ourselves. This company carries forward that belief, offering stories and rituals that honor the quiet power of connection between parent and child. This work is a continuation of that presence he embodied through a story and ritual. I hope to offer families the same gifts he gave us. A sense of being held and a reminder that even in life's changing seasons, our inner light is worth tending to the river that carried us to the ember that never goes out. Your love was the first story I ever wanted to keep telling from a place of love and legacy. And then she signs it off. Tanisha Warner. So that was posted back in September of 2025, and now we're here with this interview. But the reason why I wanted to read you guys that, because she talks about it in this interview and talks a bit about, you know, just not coming into the spotlight, but like finally wanting to put their love in the spotlight because we knew that, you know, he had gotten married and, you know, had, you know, his daughter. He always talked about his baby girl, but she wasn't like a celebrity herself. So let's take a listen to that.

I did not. You know, I remember even going to an event with him, and we walked the wet carpet, and I was like, get me out of here. You know, it was too many lights, and I was like, can I just meet you at the end? You know, I often share with people that, yes, he was famous, but from my experience, when people met him, they were not wowed by his fame. They were wowed by him. You know, people would come up, and it wasn't like, oh, my goodness, you're Malcolm. They'd be like, you have touched my life in such a big way. You have no idea.

And y' all know what's crazy? I think one of the best things that can be said about a person when they're no longer here or when they leave a room, it's not about what you've done for people, but it's really, like, how you make people feel. And hearing her talk about that to me was like, I know Malcolm Jamal Warner was, like, so intentional about his life and his legacy and his, you know, even before legacy was a conversation about his, like, day to day of, like, how he lived his life and what he chose to be a part of, how he had conversations, what he supported, what he didn't. And it just goes to show how, like, intention carries on long before or long after you do, like, even when you're not here. Because to hear her say that, it's like, if you've ever listened to an interview of his or, like, anything, you know, that's what he wanted, and that's what he was able to accomplish, you know? So, yeah, I'm just sending her, like, some love, Sending their family, their whole family, some love. His mother, everybody else affected. It's just a. It's a sad situation all the way around. And I also always wonder too. When things like this that are so sudden happen, how people, like, like, what is it like? I think everybody has their like, own thing that they do to cope. Like, I've heard people say they hold on to like, clothing because they want to be able to smell the person. I've heard people say, you know, they put up pictures or there are certain songs that they play at certain times or they visit certain places still living in the home. I think I've heard a lot of people also talk about as well. And Tanisha talks about feeling Malcolm, Jamal Warner's spirit. Let's take a listen.

Yeah, it's exciting. This one is a UK based show. I got Ottawa Bathurst to direct it. So the first two episodes he did really dope. And then I got like the other guys that I got to do throughout the season. It's like, top notch, bro. So you're gonna see this one is gonna feel like it's a grade better than what I did in Power.

It's a collective, you know, I mean, and what I get a chance to do is communicate what they feel to the network before it gets like it didn't. They start developing reputations and being difficult or doing things, but they're comfortable expressing how they feel to me, you know, now I'm at a stage where I can, you know, finance and license the project instead of giving it to the networks for them to own.

As you know, all of the roles that he played and how impactful he was on our lives, and he literally changed people's lives and how they viewed young black men and people, you know, trying to create these healthy bonds between father and son like we saw on the Cosby show, or just family in general and going to college and understanding that, like, wealth and great jobs and, you know, kids that were doing well in school that didn't just mean white family like, it meant us, too. And it was monumental. And I think a lot of times when we talk about celebrities, we talk about them in that way. And I get it. Don't get me wrong. The Cosby Show, Theo Huxtable, it, like, inspired all of us, but this interview made me really sit and think about, you know, as a human being, how his intention, his character, and everything he set out to do, not only did it come across on screen, and we know that because anybody listening to this will understand the impact of the Cosby show and Theo Huxtable, but it came across in real life, too, because those who got to know and love and be with in any capacity, Malcolm Jamal Warner, the man outside of the character, say the same.
