Lauren LaRosa
Hey y', all, what's up? It's Lauren LaRosa and this is another episode of the Latest with Lauren LaRosa. This is your daily dig on all things pop culture, entertainment news and all of the conversations that shake the room, baby. So today we are back back fresh out of the Jay Z the weekend here in New York, y'. All. I Am so tired right now. Like I got home from the Jay z concert about 4, 4:30 in the morning. No, it was, it was 4. It was, it was a little, maybe like 405 because I was going to just get dressed and come right to the station because I was like, then I won't be late. Then I was like, you know what, you could lay down till 4:45. Honestly, like 5:00. I woke up, it was 5:20. I was like, dang.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
At least you got that. At least your alarm went off. My shade did not go off, I feel like. And I set my shit.
Lauren LaRosa
So I got. What, what was that? Like 30, 45 minutes. How long did you sleep?
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I went to sleep at 4ish. 4 in the morning. I'm like, I'm gonna get up at
Target Advertiser
five,
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
wake up to like 6:30. Six something.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah. Let me tell y', all, this weekend with Jay Z outside with the UNCS at the uncon, it was, it was a very festive weekend. I didn't go all days. I know it really, but you know, it's crazy. Taylor, by the way.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Hey y'.
Ryan Reynolds
All.
Lauren LaRosa
Oh yeah, y', all, Taylor is here. Taylor made it.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Is here.
Lauren LaRosa
She went to the Jay Z concert Sunday.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Yes.
Lauren LaRosa
So she went to the Extra innings day. So yeah, checking in behind the scenes of the grind. Because we got to do that first.
T-Mobile Advertiser
Back on the grind.
Lauren LaRosa
I am tired, but I appreciate the fact that I feel like I just witnessed history.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Right? Yeah, I feel like that too. I was. Well, I'll have you get into it. But when they, like when they shut down the stadium of the fans, I was like, there's two ways of looking at it. Like, wow, this is chaotic. But it's like, wow, look at Jay Z, like bringing the impact. You know what I mean?
Lauren LaRosa
So we'll get into the latest now because I mean it all intertwines. But so this weekend in New York, this past weekend, July 10th through the 12th, Jay Z did a three night celebration at Yankee Stadium. So night one, he celebrated 30 years of reasonable doubt. Night two, he did 25 years of the Blueprint. And then on the third night, it was called Extra Innings, it took place at Yankee Stadium. You see what he did there. And extra innings was just like him. It was like a mashup of things. A lot of special guests. I went Friday and Sunday night, Taylor went Sunday night. And Friday night was smooth. Like, I got there, I was trying to be early, I really was trying. But I got there, I got there on time though. Like I got There we walked in probably like five minutes later. Jay Z was like, can y' all hear me? And then, boom. It started. But Friday night was smooth. I got there, I went into the suite entrance. Charlamagne did a suite. So we were all there. We had a great time. I was drunk, living my best life. I didn't have to wake up early for work in the morning. It was the best feeling, the best night ever, singing the songs. I did think I was going to see Foxy Brown for Ain't no N Word, but she did not come out at all this weekend. But, yeah, we were having a good time. Friday night. Saturday seems smooth, too. I didn't go Saturday, but it seems to move because it seemed like it started. I feel like people were.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
That's. That's what I was gonna say. It seemed like a lot of people, from what I've seen on my timeline, they were a little disappointed. From Saturday night, though.
Lauren LaRosa
I saw a lot of people say they had a good.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
They had a good time, but I
Lauren LaRosa
feel like people were.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
At least in my timeline, people were disappointed. I think of it ending early or I don't feel like. They feel like they got a lot. I don't know.
Lauren LaRosa
But child, everybody I saw leaving Saturday was so drunk. They could. But they shouldn't have been. On Insta Story, shout out to Scotty Bean. I was watching my homegirl, Scott Body Beam, who she also was radio personality at one time and like correspondent, anchor, social media girly, she was just recapping her Saturday night at UNCON and had a ball. And I think she went there by herself or was by herself from majority to concert. So it started a conversation online about going to concerts by yourself, but I don't know if this is one of those ones that I could have went to by myself, to be honest. Yeah, because the only reason why I say that is because, for example, Sunday night happened and they had to shut down and lock down the doors on the outside. So Friday night, there were tons of tons and tons of thousands of people there that flew in from all over. Saturday night beat Friday night's record for the largest attendance number at Yankee Stadium. And Sunday, yo, I ain't even seen the numbers, but I already know it's no way that he didn't break that record all three nights long. Like I'm saying that as a fact, and I haven't even checked that yet. That's how early it is following the concert. I haven't even seen those reports yet, but it was so many people outside. So when I arrived Sunday night. I saw all the people. I was very confused about where you entered into the stadium at, because the line was all the way back to the entrance I used Friday. But they were all facing one way, which was going to a different door. And I'm like, it's no way. All these people are going in one side, one entrance. Like, it's no way. So then I walk up to the other side, trying to do the opposite of what the line was doing so I could get around the line. And I hear boom, boom, boom, boom. I'm like, what is that? I thought security was, like, beating somebody up. They were bum rushing the doors because they were so mad that they had shut that door that second. There was like, two sides that you can enter in stadium. On one side got so crazy with people just, like, at the front and trying to get in. They shut it down. So the people bum rushed the door. They bum rush the door. And I'm standing next to cops. Like, I'm literally at a police officer because I'm trying to find the best entrance for our seats. And I'm asking the cop, what is that noise? They're like, I don't know. I'm like, you the cop? How you don't know? You ain't gonna go find out. It was. It was so many people there, yo.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Like, I was scared, man. I had. My anxiety was through the roof because
Lauren LaRosa
you could not freaking out. You inside, you sit down and relax and go get your drink.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Because I was like. And again, I was living on some drugs, y'.
Arm and Hammer Advertiser
All.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
But I'm looking around the stadium. I'm like, yo, if the show doesn't start. Because they were elevated music. They weren't even playing any songs.
Lauren LaRosa
Oh, so D. Nice wasn't even DJ no more.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
No, that's what I'm saying.
Lauren LaRosa
Like, no one.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Like, there was no music playing or nothing. So it just was like, people were getting antsy. There was two guys are about to fight in my section like that. It was just like. And I were in the Bronx at that. Like, I was just like, lord, please let me get out of stage maybe
Lauren LaRosa
because I had such a good time Friday. And I felt like, even though it was like, all right, we outside. We outside right now. Like, you know, I felt like that. But I. I felt like we had such a good time on Friday with no Inc. It. I wasn't really thinking about that. And then I sat outside. I sat outside of that Jay Z concert for about. That's how I was worried about YouTube
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
when you was like, you're still outside? I'm like, are you okay?
Lauren LaRosa
I sat outside for two hours, a little bit over two hours, just trying
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
to get in that weren't fighting or nothing.
Lauren LaRosa
They weren't fighting, yo. People was looking out, like, shout out. I wrote this lady's name down. I want to mention her. There was a woman, she was just like, a. Like, she didn't work there. She didn't anything. Her name was Nari. And I asked her. I'm like, what's your name? I'm gonna make sure I talk about you. Her name was Nairie. I was standing out there for, like, ever and, like, Charlamagne, because they had, like. Where I was sitting at was like, where the talent entrance was. Because I'm like, okay. On my way to the door, the original door I was trying to get into, away from the crowd, I saw Charles Oakley and Angela Oakley from Real Housewives of Atlanta and Charles Oakley, NBA legend, right? So when I see him outside, I'm like, oh, yeah. Like, if he's not getting in, in New York. So then I see Angela Oakley, and I've never met her before, but she watches the show. So she was like, hey, beautiful. I'm like, which way y' all going in? Cause we going with y'. All. So we walk all the way around to the back talent entrance with them. By the time we got there, they started rushing that back door. They were letting some talent through to a certain extent, but then still holding them. That's where Charlemagne was?
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
I didn't even see him. There was a girl who came over to me and was like, hey, Charlemagne wants to make sure that you cool. And I'm like, yeah, I'm fine.
Target Advertiser
Where?
Lauren LaRosa
I didn't know he was there. I'm like, where is he? So she was like, oh, he's up there. I'm like, oh, yeah, I'm fine. She was like, let me see your ticket. So then she was asking me, like, she was trying to figure out where my ticket was so that when she got me in, she could tell me where to go. She was going to, like, try to help me get in. I sat there for about an hour and a half, and then I went to another side, and it was a woman named Nari who had got real cool with the security guard. When they finally opened that door back up, they closed it down because they started getting crazy, started shoving. Then it opened it back up again, and she was like, he was about to grab her and let her go in. And she was like, no, you need to take Lauren in. Like, she shouldn't be sitting out here. And I was like, that was so freaking nice. Like, thank you. She was like, I'm on my way in too, girl. Like, it was just like, people were being so nice. Like, everybody was just so nice. And mind you, we in the Bronx, so you got people yelling, screaming f your mother, like, all that stuff. But everybody really just wanted to get in and have a good time. People were so excited for Jay Z and so excited for the concert. But I did start to think, like, yo, if one person even moves the wrong way and everybody starts running thinking something's going on, or we in the middle of the Bronx. Like, if I'm somebody that's like, really, really, like, you know what I mean? Like, it's like these people not from here. You had white people. I mean, like, corporate executive white people. Like, like, imagine when I. The first Friday when I came Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio was trying to get in, and I'm like, oh, they outside. Like, imagine that, y'. All. And it lasted for a good. Like, it lasted for what? How long were we. It didn't feel like three hours when I got in there, but they were saying, like, people when I got inside were telling me they were waiting for like three or four hours.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Yeah.

Kal Penn
Hey, everyone, it's Cal Penn, host of Irsay, The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast, I'm sitting down with Divergent author Veronica Roth to talk about her sprawling new novel. See, it's a sci fi fantasy epic about two protagonists on opposite sides of a war and a prophecy neither of them wanted.
Veronica Roth
My first book was Divergent, and when that came out, like, because it was so popular, I think it attracted like, mostly positivity, but the negativity I sucked in like a sponge. And I think it was like, critiques of things I liked. When I was like, you know, I was 23 and I wrote this book and it had all my, like, dorky little cheesy or maybe unrealistic loves in it. And I started to feel a lot of shame about those things. And so for the rest of my career, I steered away from those little things that, like, make you feel pleasure when you read. But I also was, like, saying no to these parts of myself that I then was like, screw it.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, so that's this book.

Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
But I was able to get in easily. I found I saw someone that I knew that was like right at the security exit. And it must have. Right, right when I got in, I saw people like banging on the window. Like, I must have just made that mark.
Lauren LaRosa
No, because when you said that you were at. That you were at.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Yeah, at the security. Yeah, whatever door it was.
Lauren LaRosa
I. That's where we went toward. That's why I walked down that way with them, because I'm like, okay, well tell us down here. We can hop in line with her. I'm trying to come catch you.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I know, but I was like. I was already. I was literally like.
Lauren LaRosa
As soon as you got in, all chaos broke loose. Like, honestly. But I will say shout out to Roc Nation. Jay Z's team really like came out, there was amongst the people trying to make everything make sense because they didn't want nobody to get hurt.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
And people were. I saw people being upset at Jay Z for not starting the show. I think that that was the best thing he could have did. Yeah.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Because then it would have been bad. People been mad at him. It was like, damn, if he do dare, if he don't. Because if he did start the show, people and people have got hurt. It'll been on him.
Lauren LaRosa
I was praying he did not start that show. And people start bum rushing because the little gate I was standing at, they would have took that gate and on people down. And I had on like a girl. I had on a real heel. Okay. I'm like. Of all the nights to not wear flats. But Jay Z, when he actually came out on stage, he addressed all of this.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
I mean he had to. Let's take a listen.
Charlamagne Tha God
Explain the delay to you guys. It was like 10000 people outside and
Lauren LaRosa
they closed all the doors and somebody rushed the door and they closed the
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
door for you guys.
Lauren LaRosa
Safety and everybody's safety outside. There's 10,000 people outside. I don't want to start using people get trampled.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
So.
Lauren LaRosa
I know, really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everybody's okay. Now I also received a joint statement this morning from. It's a joint statement with the New York Yankees, ROC Nation and Live Nation. So the statement says, on Sunday evening at various fan entrances at Yankee Stadium, hundreds of individuals and large group who do not have tickets to tonight's performance stormed over peaceful ticket holders and in some cases breached security. As a result, gates at all entrances of the stadium were closed for an extended period of time. With the thoughtful guidance of nypd, gates were reopened cautiously and carefully to ensure the safety of those inside and outside the Yankees. ROC Nation and Live Nation express our deep gratitude to the NYPD and into Yankee Stadium security personnel for their leaders direction throughout the evening. Putting the welfare of all the attendees above everything. I thought that they handled it the best way they could. Now I will say I was looking at autumn interests because it's not a lot of them and the doors are skinny. I was like, what was the workaround? Like, what was the like, what's the solution to this?
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I don't know. They should have worked it, like, how TSA be working.
Lauren LaRosa
But I spoke to somebody here, one of our producers that edits and produces or one of our editors that edits for Netflix. He was saying that it's always like that at the really popular Yankee games, too, and at graduations, like, they always have door issues. And I'm like, I don't go to Yankee Stadium. For real. So I didn't know that.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Yeah, that's the second time I've been there.
Lauren LaRosa
This is my second time being there. But the first time I was there, it was. I was there for a soccer game, but there were not nearly as many people.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I was there for the 50th anniversary, and it was chilling, too.
Lauren LaRosa
Well, you know, once we got through all the things I told y', all, Friday night was a really good night. Once we got through all the things on Sunday, Beyonce hit the stage again. Beyonce was my favorite part of the weekend. I never got to see her on tour before. Really?
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
You never went to a Beyonce concert?
Lauren LaRosa
Everybody said that. Because when she was on majority of her tours, I was in LA and I was like. I was. I was working, like, three jobs at one point. I didn't have time to stop and go, what? Yes. And I remember when she came to la, I remember one of the shows. I think it was on the Run.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
On the Run is my top three favorite shows.
Lauren LaRosa
I think it was on the Run. And she came and did an LA show, and I was. I was literally supposed to go, and the person that was giving me their ticket had, like, double gave out the tickets or something like that and didn't have as many as they thought. So, I mean, like, I got dressed. I was at their house. We pregame in here. Like, I don't have to. Like, I forgot that this ticket belonged to this person. Now they want to go. One of their roommates wasn't gonna go at one point.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Oh, my God.
Lauren LaRosa
And the other person that paid for the ticket, I didn't pay for mine. They were just like. Like, yo, I want you to come. So I'm gonna, you know, look out. So I gave the ticket back, and I was sad. Yeah, I've never seen Beyonce on tour. So seeing. So seeing her, and that was honestly a little. I've never seen Beyonce in person. Like, like, like that. I mean, never on tour, never anywhere. Like, so I think I was just amazed because I'm like, this is Beyonce.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
But you know what's so funny? That performance she gave last night on Sunday that was so minimal of what she can do. And it was weird though seeing that personally for me because I she be
Lauren LaRosa
off, she be full out yo.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
But I know and you know it's her husband's, her husband's stage at that night, so I get that. But it was just so weird like for her to even have the dancers come out. That was. I was surprised by that too because
Lauren LaRosa
yeah, I thought, I'm like, okay, this is like a little mini what she be doing on tour.

Lauren LaRosa
You are famous.

No, not because of, like, size or anything. He just doesn't seem like a person. You just be like, yo, let me get some chicken for you.

He was around to everybody because people were hungry. We were standing up for like six, seven hours.

I was, he is. I've never met him, but he just, I don't know, you know how some people just don't seem approachable. Like, I wouldn't just go up to him and ask him, you know, even if I knew him, like, hey, can
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
I get a nice guy?
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, okay.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
He's a nice guy.
Lauren LaRosa
I was starving, so I wish I was over there with y', all, because I, I, I didn't have a chance. My tickets came in so last minute. I had to just get up and get ready, so I didn't really eat properly. And when I was like, I'll just get food when I get there.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Bad idea.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
When? Last night?
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah. At the concert? Yes. So, okay. What was your favorite night? I think the first night. Yes.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
I always think the first night for any concert is always the best because it's new for everybody, you know, so it's like we don't know what we're going to experience, so. But the energy was so high the first night.
Lauren LaRosa
And I remember when he was excited.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
When you don't.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
And he brought out, like, him bringing out Beyonce, like, first, like, I didn't expect that.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
At all. And then Blue Ivy.
Lauren LaRosa
We gotta take a listen. We have to listen. Blue Ivy definitely made me tear up. Let's Take a listen to Beyonce coming out to Can't Knock the Hustle. Now I'm going to play a bit of Blue Ivy. You won't hear her, but you hear Jay Z talk about her. And then she plays the piano. Let's take a listen. She plays into feeling it. Let's take a listen. Yeah, yeah, yeah, You. I teared up with Blue Ivy. My kids have to be great. I texted yo. You texted me was like, my kids need to be like, I am so serious. Like, I don't just kids that just be at home and be like, mommy, I love you. No, Are you Blue Ivy?
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
You look at your kid, then you look at Blue Ivy.
Lauren LaRosa
She naturally. I remember them talking about how, like, she just naturally does all that stuff. Like, she don't even take. Like, this is not something she's like she even thinks she wants to make a career out of yet. She just be doing this stuff.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
She's a Grammy award winner already.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Right, right.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
She's already accomplished. She's the big homie.
Lauren LaRosa
Who was your favorite performance of the first night?
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
I was really happy to see Slick Rick and Nas, of course.
Lauren LaRosa
Everybody was so excited for Nas and Jay Z be on stage together. We should listen to that. No one's seen that.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I feel like at least our generation, we never seen that before.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, but I knew when I saw that title curated playlist. By now I'm like, okay, he coming out this weekend.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
But you know what? I was really happy about Night two when Eminem came out and people tried to create this narrative online that Eminem is one of the best or biggest
Lauren LaRosa
rappers in the world because he white.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Yo, the roof came off when he came out.
Lauren LaRosa
But also Eminem is. Oh, by the way, y', all, BDOT has been on the podcast before. You gotta. Because we will just say it because we know you. But it may be a new listener listening to this episode right now. So you gotta let them know where to find you and all this stuff. Like how they know you all that stuff. Oh, introduce yourself.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Hi, my name is Brian B. Dodd Miller. I'm a graduate of Delaware State University State and I co host with Angela Yee from time to time on Way Up.
Lauren LaRosa
Yes, now. And you talk about Eminem. I think a part of it.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
I know, but we got it. Let's get the Cliff Notes, man.
Lauren LaRosa
No, my. They don't. First of all, don't short my people. They be into hip hop and stuff.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Journalists.
Lauren LaRosa
Just because I don't be doing all the top 10. He makes these lists that be pissing artists. It'd be like, top 10 rappers from, like, Saturn. And they'd be like, I've been on Saturn. What you mean you don't be.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
No, no, no. Absolutely not. But, yeah, I'm a music journalist. I was also mtv vj, saw the Rap Radar podcast, interview Drake, Jay Z, and a couple other people.
Lauren LaRosa
And he is freaking. He was there with no tickets and ended up at the after party. But listen, yeah, Eminem don't go nowhere.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
He doesn't.
Lauren LaRosa
He don't be nowhere. So I think. I mean, that's kind of what you get with Jay Z and Beyonce, too, but we at least get to see them sometimes on Instagram and, like, living their life. And I feel like they've been active these last, like, six months, seven months. Eminem never, like, the last we heard from him was when he became a grandfather. Remember, he was all sad that he was happy, but he was crying that Haley had. Was having a baby or getting married or something.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Yeah, I think both.
Lauren LaRosa
Oh, yeah, I remember. That's the last time I remember hearing from Eminem.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Last time I was gonna say when he did that diss to Trump.
Lauren LaRosa
Okay. Oh, he also. When he did the lawsuit with Reasonably Shady, the podcast, the Black Effect podcast.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I ain't know he did that. Okay.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah. Cause he's mad about the shady thing. But anyway, Eminem be nowhere. And what I realized that night, too, when Eminem came out, that was night two.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Yes.
Lauren LaRosa
I realized how committed to, like, the look rappers of a certain era are, because, like, you can see his silhouette. And I was like, oh, that's Eminem.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
Jay Z's the same way.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
You know what's so ill about Jay Z?
Lauren LaRosa
Worked out good for him.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
You know what's so great about Jay Z and Eminem and, like, Nas, These guys are in their mid-50s, right? Like, people don't realize that, but Jay Z is the same age as Rakim and Big Daddy Kane.
Trail Map User 1
That's crazy.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Oh, my God.
Arm and Hammer Advertiser
For real?
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Only by like, a year and like, a couple months.
Lauren LaRosa
No. I would have never got that. He seems so much younger.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Yeah. The perception.
Lauren LaRosa
But Big Daddy King was like, his inspo coming in, right?
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
He was like his pro. He was the mentor and protege, that kind of thing. But they're literally the same. They would have been in high school at the same time.
Lauren LaRosa
I always thought that Big Daddy Kane was a lot older than Jay Z. Not even just because of looks or anything like that. But music time, music timing and how. How time. How Jay Z's music is more relevant Than, you know, I mean, Big Daddy Kane. There's a lot of people who don't know who Big Daddy Kane is that are younger than us. But also because how. Of how he talks about Big Daddy Kane. I thought Big Daddy Kane preference for him.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Yeah.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
You know, so it's just ill to see Jay at this stage in his career, you know, still in demand across all demographics.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
You think this is the last time we're going to see Jay Z on stage?
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Yes. Outside of these.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Everybody too, I think so.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Think about it. How many more anniversary shows you think
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
we're going to see exactly, though? And I also think about just the momentum of this, though, like.
Lauren LaRosa
And he was.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
My man was forgetting some lines there.
Lauren LaRosa
What was that song he was doing the last night, Sunday night? He was doing a song and he was. Kanye was on it, cuz. I don't even know the name, cuz he was. He was doing one song and came out. We gota. Yes. When Swiss Beats was out. We got to find that audio and put it in here, cuz I noticed. I'm like, okay. He don't really know the Kanye ad lit part. I'm like, but, but. And whatever. He gonna get his own part. He got his own part. He was doing a little bit. He was like.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
He forgot.
Trail Map User 2
Yeah.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
It looked like he was giving up.
Lauren LaRosa
Something. We gotta put that in here. Y' all gotta hear that. Y' all gotta hear that.
Target Advertiser
That's what I was saying.
Lauren LaRosa
No, but he was flowing throughout everything else a little bit. People also don't understand how. Because they make it look so easy to good rappers who do it like Jada K, Jay Z. It is hard to get up there and go for that long. Your birth control is like.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
He is 56 years old and just
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
remembering the line, like, he ain't never

smoked a hookah in his life.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Jump shot. Still money, yo. I got a blast, guys.
Lauren LaRosa
You made it to the after party real quick.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Yes.
Lauren LaRosa
Who was in the after party? You went the first night, Friday night.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
Private after party. DJ Khaled, Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, Jay Z, Martinez.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
I don't know how I made it, but I did without a ticket.
Arm and Hammer Advertiser
Right.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
It's crazy.
Lauren LaRosa
Are they in there really celebrating to have a good time in those things? Like when we see those pictures.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
Yeah. When Jay. Everyone clapped and he made his rounds and said hi to everybody and it was cool, man. Dave Chappelle was crazy.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
He did it all three nights. I don't know what he did last night.
Lauren LaRosa
No. He probably was pissed at I know he was pissed off.
Brian B. Dodd Miller (B Dot)
I was there for the first and then I didn't go back. But it was cool man. And it was a great celebratory moment so I was happy to be a part of it.
Lauren LaRosa
Well, thank you for tapping in.

Hey everyone, it's Cal Penn, host of Irsay, The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast I'm sitting down with Lily Chu, the author of the Audible original romantic comedy Just Kiss Already. It's a story about a forensic anthropologist who secretly writes mystery novels, an actress who adapts his book into a film, and what happens when a meme and a media tour collide with a slow burn romance. It's performed by Simu Liu and Philippa Hsu, and it is an absolute blast
Lily Chu
when you actually hear the performance, you realize that other people are taking your words and what you thought was kind of a straightforward sentence. Like the cat in the corner is black. In my head it's the cat in the corner corner is black. Not the dog, not the gerbil. But someone else might say it, the cat in the corner is black. That's always fascinating to me how they just bring in all these different nuances and really make it fun and interesting and distinctive.

mobile.com but yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed my weekend though. I did last night though I really do wish last night everything's better when you don't have to wake up for work the next morning. Yeah, but I really say Rihanna. You know what I was thinking about with Rihanna? And I know like the first night there were so many like knots. I know last the last night I missed Ja Rule and Fat Joe. But I saw Fat Joe didn't come out.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
It was you talking about Jadakiss.
Lauren LaRosa
Oh so Jada okay, because I didn't
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
know Ja Rule was gonna come out.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, I thought that. I thought that because I heard I was. I was outside of the stadium at that point I just heard it. So when I heard all the noise, I thought Ja Rule was on stage.
Lily Chu
Okay.
Lauren LaRosa
Well, anyway, when I was walking to my seat, I saw Angie Martinez and Fat Joe, but I didn't get to see Fat Joe perform. But seeing Rihanna on that stage was great. It was amazing. But you know what? It made me think about Rihanna. Roc Nation has done a really good job with the artists that come from their tree of, like, helping them build out real business to sustain in a way that we've never seen. There were three billionaires that hit that stage last year.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I know.
Lauren LaRosa
Brianna, Beyonce, Jay Z, minimum. Like, Nas is up there. I don't know where he be sometimes. Because he invests in. I don't know. I don't think so. No, I don't think so. But I was just thinking about that, like, yo, Rihanna is a billionaire. I literally have on her makeup products right now and swear by them, and she's just casually living her life.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Yo, and that. But that's why everyone loves Rihanna, because she could be that and still walk the streets in New York like, hey, girl, hey. Like, just. Just like us regular people.
Lauren LaRosa
Yes, Yes. I had a really, really great time, though. Such a great time.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Little mama should have came out.
Lauren LaRosa
No, she stands. Yeah, I said that jokingly. Like, I literally said.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I would have thought it would have
Lauren LaRosa
been like, AZ and Alicia Keys are too. They serious. Like, this is like real hip hop. This is like, when. When did you fall. That's like brown sugar. When did you fall in love with hip hop? And not to say lil Mama, not mama, know I love her. That's my girl. Mama, if you listen, you know I love you, but I think putting her in New York, I think putting her in that moment, it would have made it a joking thing. And none of them would have wanted that Mama, to be honest with you, she don't even like that moment no more like she hates it.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I know, but I'm just saying it will have been to me, I guess how I'm thinking, like, it will make. We're in New York makes sense. And I get people are making fun
Lauren LaRosa
of the situation and tell us that we don't need to be outside with the UN because why Little mama would
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
have wanted to be on that stage.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah. If who wouldn't have wanted to be on that stage? I would have got on that stage. And I don't do nothing.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I'm just saying.
Lauren LaRosa
I bet Gayle King, though, right now. Okay, well, that was our Jay Z weekend recap.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I didn't finish.
Lauren LaRosa
Oh, Go ahead.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
When I. Because BDC came in with Tiana Taylor, I don't even.
Lauren LaRosa
Oh, go ahead.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Just to say too, though, love, love Tian Taylor down. But what has happened was. What had happened. What Yancey came out Hard Not Life. And Friday night, and then, I mean, I said, hard not Life. Don't knock the Hustle. And then he played that song again Sunday night. So, you know, people are going to think that Beyonce was going to come out, but instead brought Teyana. And I think that also brought down the momentum because people were also. Were waiting and she was the first act to come out.
Lauren LaRosa
So I think people were waiting too, all night long, because everybody that I was seated with. And that's why I do like being on the floor versus a suite, because you can like, like, feel the energy of other people. Everybody kept standing up when they thought it was a song that she would be coming out on, and then it. It wasn't her. And I think because she came out so early the first night for Can't Knock the Hustle, people expected her earlier in the show or I think they didn't get.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Because of the song too, though. They like, oh, Beyonce's about to come back out.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, I think that they. That wasn't a good. They didn't. They didn't put Tiana in the best position. Where I talked about that also to her audio was so not like.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
But I wonder if it brought out her. Brought her out on the first night, if she would receive better. Because people love Tiana. You know what I mean?
Lauren LaRosa
Like, I love Tiana. I loved her, but I was. I was surprised. She looked good as hell. She always looked good, though. I was surprised to see her only because, if I'm being honest, I was surprised too. When I'm like, it's Sunday night. It should be Mary J. Like, Beyonce ain't popped up yet. And when she. When I was here Friday, she popped up real early in the game. I'm like, it's a grand reveal. It gotta be Mary J. And I think that was another thing too, is for the people who weren't expecting Beyonce, they were expecting Mary J. Blige.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
Yeah. But I think maybe he wanted to bring her out. But, you know, she's on tour of the girls.
Lauren LaRosa
You know, I think Teyana's the new generation of the girls. And I think that that's what he was. And it's New York, It's Teyana. She's had an amazing year. I think that that's what he was
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
trying to do, but not for Sunday night. No offense, Jay Z. I'm just saying

Who didn't have like actual seat. It was like standing room that they were in. They were swapping off, like people around me. Like when they would get up to go get food or drinks or use the bathroom, they would let people sit down just to take A break. That's how much people love Jay Z.

And then I was like, but it's JayZ. He probably paid. Of course. It's worth it. Yeah, it's worth it.

I.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
That was my. Well, that wasn't my first Jay Z show because I. The first time I seen him live was on the Run, Okay. Him and Beyonce, and that was top three, one of my favorite shows. But seeing him and I really seen the. His story in a sense of, like, his first album. And just the impact. The impact to me was just nuts to me seeing that.
Lauren LaRosa
I don't. I don't think people understand, and I don't think people understand that, like, Jay Z, like, he owns rock. Like, he's, like, he's. He's an independent artist.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I know.
Lauren LaRosa
Because he's a billionaire and he's so big of us. Like, we think of independent artists of, like, as, like, indie and trying to figure it out. And he was that at one point. But, like. Like, he owns that. Like,
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
what does he think of seeing all, like, is this. That's. That's amazing to feel.
Lauren LaRosa
I know. Like. Like, what is this? Because he.
Arm and Hammer Advertiser
You.

I. I wonder, like, you get to a point where you used to it or no, right? Because, like, you. He's been Jay Z for a while. Beyonce has been Beyonce for a while.
Jay Z Concert Attendee 1
I think they still. I would. I would think that they still be like, wow.
Lauren LaRosa
People were running, especially Jay Z at the age, to the stage. Like. Like, somebody tried to climb on my boyfriend's back. He was like, yo, relax. Cause we were like. We were standing up. So the girl tried to climb in the chair. So she used, like, grabbed him. He was like, yo, what the hell? Like, relax. And I turned around, like, what is going on? He was like, yo, you gotta relax. Like, back up. It's not that you're not. And she was drunk. Like, it was somebody.
Charlamagne Tha God

You know, I learned about Jazz O and the origin story of Jay Z. I had always thought Daddy Big Daddy Kane played a lot. A big role in that and like so many other people, I'd never heard about jazz O. I learned a lot of hip hop culture in real time. And it's just to see where hip hop can take you. Like, where our things can take you to.

No, absolutely. And I was telling our Uncle Sharla because he was hating on us young folks about the whole thing. Trying gay kids keep Jay Z.

because it's like, I wasn't a huge Jay Z fan, but, you know, I respected the man, understood, like, his. His process. Not even say process, but, you know, his history, but seeing it and really understand the impact, like, oh, wow. And like, here, like. Like, it's different. I'm glad to be like, okay, I'm a fan for sure now.

Yeah, I agree. Well, that was another episode of the latest with Lauren, the rose of the podcast. I don't know if you guys have ever known this, but when I say this final line, I'll tell you what song it's from. My boyfriend realized it this weekend. We were at the concert. I tell you guys every single episode. Y' all could be anywhere in the world, but y' all choose to be right here with me. My low riders. That sound familiar? You could be anywhere in the world, but you choose to be right here with me. Jay Z says that I. I kind of flipped it, but that's where I got it from. That is where you got from. No, that part where he like. I mean, the. I like that song in general, but that part where he's talking, like, it's like, very, like.
