Lauren LaRosa
I'm the homegirl that knows a little bit about everything and everybody. You know she don't lie about that, right? Lauren Came in hot. Hey, y'. All, what's up? It's Lauren LaRosa. And this is another episode of the Latest with Lauren Rosa. This is your daily dig on all things pop culture, entertainment news, and all of the conversations that shake the room, baby. Now, we are going to get right on into it because y' all know we always kick off our episodes checking in behind the scenes of the grind. So coming off of a long holiday weekend, I really got a sense of, like, anxiousness as I was preparing for the work week this week. And I don't know. I don't know if it's because, you know, with everything being. I was gonna say new, but we're still doing the same job. It's just airing a bit differently in certain ways. I mean, everything's still going to be on the YouTube and all the things, but now that Breakfast Club is heading on over to Netflix, and we will be live, I've been just talking myself a lot through. All right, Lauren, you're live. You know, there's certain things I want to tighten up and things of that nature, and I don't know if maybe I'm putting a lot more pressure on myself that I need to be doing, because I am essentially doing the job I've been doing every day for a little over a year now. But, man, preparing for work last night, I just. I was so anxious to the point where I didn't even have an appetite. It was Memorial Day, we grilled, and I literally just did not have an appetite. And I don't know what the workaround for that is, but I just want to be honest and letting people know that, like, no matter how much someone is doing something every single day, if you really care about what you're doing, if you really care about, you know, doing it right, being successful at it and not missing your mark, the anxiousness and the butterflies, you can't escape them. It's like first day jitters, and it's not first day. And I think for me, because there's a lot of, like, watching everything, understanding things. I'm always like, oh, my God, I hope nothing is missed. I hope, you know, information is correct. I hope and not even hope. A lot of times, I pray on it. I pray after I get the segments and, you know, the. The topics together and in the morning as well, that, like, I'm able to communicate best because I am still in real time learning in front of the world. And now we're doing it on live. Now we're doing it live daily on Netflix. Across the world, like globally. So, you know, it's. It's like with, with new levels, there comes new preparation that is necessary and new discipline. And I don't know, the, the anxiousness of it all just has me, like, that's literally how I feel. It's like I'm so excited, but at the same time, I am, like, making sure I've dotted all my eyes and crossed all my T's, and maybe I'm overthinking it. You know, like, when you step into something that you have been like, naturally just like, you know, being able to communicate things, further conversation, storytell, those are things that I've always naturally just, you know, been able to do and, and knew that I wanted to make a career out of in different facets. But when you see it beginning to elevate and, you know, you start to personally challenge yourself to be better, I think there's nothing wrong with that. But one of the things I'm learning throughout this is even though you do that and you should, you always should want to be better, you also just got to take a breather and be like, I got this, though. So this is me talking to me, girl. You got this. Breakfast Club live on Netflix June 1st. Stop playing. You got this. Let's get on into the latest. So first we're going to get to the American Music Awards, the AMAs that were hosted by Queen Latifah in Vegas. A lot of conversation coming out of those awards. But before we get to that big stage, I want to shout out my girls, Lex P. Andrea from the Poor Minds podcast. You talking about stages and people knowing you got this and knowing to work their stage. I was a guest at their live show. They kicked off here in New York City for their still sipping live podcast tour for their podcast Poor Minds. And oh my God, first of all, just congratulations to the ladies. Their podcast is available everywhere. You listen to podcasts. They are on Black Effect as well. So they my cousins in the Black Effect universe. But I, for me, you know, one of the, the goals this year is to grow in what I do and what I know that I can do. And I want to do that in, in the people. I want to do that live with this podcast, bringing the latest Lauren LaRosa Live to various cities and states. So being able to go and witness what they do live and seeing how their community reacts and how people showed up. Over 1400 people in the building. Okay, first floor and balcony, sold out. Okay. People mouthing their intro word for word of their podcast. Let's take a listen. What's up, y'?
Lex P and Drea Nicole
All? Y', all, it's your girl Lex P. And it's your girl Drea Nicole. And you are tuned in to another episode of
Lauren LaRosa
where I grunt my speech software 5. I was like, y' all better do that. I was just honored to be there and to be a part. It was also just a really, really good time. I. I've been to a few other live PO podcast, and I think sometimes, you know, they're a little long, a little drawn out, but this felt like a party from start to finish. It felt like a girl's night from start to finish. So we did play a little trivia. This is me playing a little trivia with Lex and Drea. Take a listen. Oh, okay. What is Dre's mom's name? Barbara.
Lex P and Drea Nicole
Capital B.
Lauren LaRosa
This the last one. Okay. Okay. Where did Lake Andrea meet and will come from? The strip club.
Lex P and Drea Nicole
I know that one.
Lauren LaRosa
And the rest of the night was just, again, it was. It was literally like being out with your homegirls. So I just wanted to take a second before we got into the American Music Awards because we talking about big stages here to commend them because they prior to us going on stage. Talk to me a bit about being nervous because this is their first time back on tour in a while. Let's take a listen to that. Okay. First of all, I just want to say thank y' all for all being here tonight. You know, Shout out to the forefront group. My bestie, Uncle Baddie Lauren, Weezy. Thank y' all so much for showing up for us tonight. Like, this means more than y' all know. I'm really nervous right now. Shout out to my bestie. We did it. We started this tour off in New York, so we're just thankful that all of you are here to share this moment with us. And again, thank y' all for sure. Of course we're here. We don't. We appreciate y' all because we are very nervous because we haven't went on tour in a few years. So to have all of y' all show up for us in this way just makes us feel so good. Baby, y' all have packed the block out. We can't even get down the street. So don't even be nervous about nothing. And if you guys are unfamiliar with their podcast again, their podcast is called Poor Minds. They are one of the podcasts right now, in my opinion, that is becoming one of the most culturally relevant podcasts with two black women podcasters. You know, I. I've seen them in the Summer Walker video, and they have a plethora of guests. Everybody from Two Chains to Charlotte to everybody has done their show. Savannah James, the wife of LeBron James, has done their show. But I think what I, what I found to be so dope was the fact that people are showing up. And I mean showing up like traffic down the street. Couldn't even get down the street to get to the podcast festival. I thought I was running the festival. It felt like a festival to the live podcast taping. I thought I was running late, hopped out the car to walk down the bl because it was so much traffic, because people were getting dropped off for their show. But people showed up just for them. It wasn't even about guests and being able to be a part of media. In the media landscape as it changes and we discover, you know, where the new mediums are, where the new personalities are, who are the people that are going to be leading conversation when it comes to media and divulging stories and storytelling and interviews. Like watching all of that take full shape and turn from what used to be such traditional media to now, you know, the IT girls taking center stage and having substance in real conversation and that dominating, so inspiring to see. So I wanted to start off this episode shouting my girls out and saying thank you for bringing me to be a part of your show. But honestly, like, I would have went and watched it even if I didn't have, you know, that small little participation role. They gave me a participation award basically, like, because I would have literally came regardless because of what I'm watching them build. I'm inspired. Congratulations, ladies.
Wheezy (WTF from Decisions, Decisions)
This is Weezy. WTF from Decisions, decisions. You know, a lot of us grew up not fully trusting the healthcare system. And honestly, the system has given us plenty of reasons to feel that way. But now it's time for us to take control of the conversation, to take control of our sexual health, Learn the facts, ask questions, and advocate for ourselves. That's how we start changing the story. So let's talk. We like to think HIV is something that affects other people, but it is hitting our own community hard. Black women make up about 13% of women in the US but account for nearly half of all new HIV diagnoses around women. And being proactive doesn't mean you just don't trust your partner. It just means you trust yourself enough to stay in control. So know your options, ask questions, and protect your peace and your body. That's real power. Because protecting yourself isn't embarrassing. It's responsible Sex is normal. Protecting yourself should be normal too. Actually, it's kind of badass. Taking control of your sexual health is grown woman energy. Sponsored by Care for the Culture from Gilead Sciences.

Lauren LaRosa
Now let's get on into the AMA. So the 52nd annual AMAs were hosted in Las Vegas. Queen Latifah was the host and she gave us another rare family date night on the carpet. She pulled up to the carpet with her partner Ebony Nichols and their 6 year old son Rebel, and with them was Gabrielle Union. Dwayne Wade's seven year old daughter Kavaya was with them as well too. Now, the last time that Queen Latifah hosted The Amaze was 1995 and there was a lot of like nostalgia throwback call out moments to that award year, literally including even video from Queen latifah herself from 1995. And you know, her talking about it, making reference to the fact that like, you know, all these years later, she's back. Let's take a listen to Queen Latifah opening the awards show and making reference to that.
Lex P and Drea Nicole
The energy is crazy in here. Make some noise. Welcome to the 52nd annual American Music Award, ladies and gentlemen. We about to tear it up in here tonight. We're coming in hot right here in Las Vegas. How about that BTS performance? And they so pretty. Damn how they do that. And if you think it's loud now, just wait because BTS is on their way right here, right now. Ah, I gotta say, it feels so good to be back here hosting the AMAs after 31 years. Look at God. You believe that some of BTS wasn't even born. That's crazy. That Black don't crack, baby. And if you would have told me 31 years that I'll be back on this stage with a stack of awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a career that has taken me from music to film and everything in between. Hi, sun son. Hi. I see you, baby. I would have probably looked at you and said, who you calling a trailblazer?
Lauren LaRosa
Now, real quick, just some of the performances. Tiana Taylor. First of all, she wasn't the first performance, but Tiana Taylor had a hell of a performance on that stage which included a. A surprise guest, Missy Elliott. Let's take a listen. I repeat, restrict the area. Subject is awake movement. She is not from Earth. Tiana Teller has officially entered our atmosphere. I don't want to waste our time. Visions of you and. Tell me that you want it to be. Cat Dolls and Busta Rhymes at the stage. Let's take a listen.
Dr. Jay Barnett
Like she really want you want to play with the
Sarah Spain
watch.
Lauren LaRosa
And one of the fire things to see was, you know, just some of the artists that we've been following throughout the year who've been receiving awards and accolades as a like should all year long also receive awards amongst people who are not just their peers. Like, not that that matters. I feel like our awards are enough, but it is good to see people be honored across the board and. And. And to see certain genres be recognized. Leon Thomas won for breakthrough R B artist, and it was like, duh. And this is no shade to my girl Mariah Scientist, because I love her as well. But in that category of breakthrough R B artists was Leon Thomas, Mariah Scientist, Raven Linnae, and he took that home. He was also up for new artist, Best new artist of the year or new artist of the year against Olivia Dean, Somber, Cat's Eye, Ella Langley, and Alex Warren. And Cat's Eye took that home. But I feel like Olivia Dean and granted, a lot of these, like, K pop groups are huge, but. But yes, the K pop groups are. Are big right now. So in that category, I was like, okay, I can kind of see why that went the way it went. But shout out to Leon Thomas. And he gave a very, very heartfelt. Even though it was, you know, not as long a very heartfelt thank you when he won the award. Let's take a listen.
Leon Thomas
Oh, my God, This is such an honor. R and B is home for me. It's the music that my family raised me on. And shout out to all the other people who were nominated tonight. All of y' all really inspired me. I love Y' all so much.
Lauren LaRosa
For real.
Leon Thomas
I want to dedicate this first and foremost to the fans. Thank you so much for sticking by my side. A lot of y' all grew up with me on Nickelodeon and our piece. Appreciate y' all for rocking with me.
Lauren LaRosa
For real.
Leon Thomas
But I want to dedicate this award to a man who raised me through music. My stepfather, Jon Kev, who passed away this year. I love you, John. This is for you, man. I love y'.
Lex P and Drea Nicole
All.
Leon Thomas
Peace.
Lauren LaRosa
Also, Black Eyed Peas, they took home an ama for best throwback song for Rock that Body, Carol G took home best Latin album. This was presented by John Legend. She actually won two awards at one time, and she went up for one, and then they surprised her with another one. She was so excited. Let's take a listen to that.
Leon Thomas
Okay, Carol, before you go, we've got a little extra surprise for you. I'm happy to say in addition to this amazing award, you've also won the award for best Latin album.
Lauren LaRosa
So congratulations again.
Lex P and Drea Nicole
Thank you.
Lauren LaRosa
Our girl sza, Best female R B Artist, which was presented by bts. But y' all know what was one of the standout moments from. For me from the awards? Glorilla was. So I was watching the red carpet of the awards before it started, and you had Shelly from Love island and Tetris that were hosting the carpet for Billboard, and they were talking to Glorilla. They were asking Glo for a surprise for her upcoming album, like a sur. Like, you know, piece of info. She dropped a bomb on us. Somebody from Dusty sh gonna be on that album. Child, let's take a listen or something.
AT&T Narrator
You want a te?
Lauren LaRosa
You can tell me. I promise. I'm.
Lex P and Drea Nicole
I'm on the.
Lauren LaRosa
I got one of the DC members.
Lex P and Drea Nicole
Oh, hey, did you hear that right now? DC members on my album. Oh, my goodness.
Dr. Jay Barnett
That's exciting.
Lauren LaRosa
That's exciting. Put your predictions up. I think it's Kelly. First of all, I feel like if it was Beyonce, she wouldn't have said it, because everything with Beyonce is like, mum, like, you don't say nothing. But I don't know. I mean, everybody loves Glorilla, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was Beyonce, like, clearing some vocals or something for her. Even if it's not nothing new and original from Beyonce. But to me, I don't know. Kelly Rowland has. She's outside and glow reminds me of, like, she's the girl for the girls that are outside that love to have a good time. Not that Beyonce and Michelle don't, but Kelly Rowland just. I Don't know, it just feels like it would be Kelly Rowland. I don't know if y' all are following me on this feeling, but who do you guys think it would be? I said Kelly and I posted this to the Brown girl grinding Instagram. Make sure you're following us there just to see people like, you know, where their bets would be. And I've seen a lot of people saying Kelly Rowling. A lot of people because she said D.C. members, people were like D.C. so they were thinking like the comic books or Dream Chasers talking about Meek Mills. But if you're a Destiny Child's fan, Destiny's Child fan, you know, you've heard them say DC before. Like I don't know how people love to play. But yeah, that was one of the moments that like really set out from the amas for me as well too. But honestly, I think just all the nostalgia itself just really felt good to see. Like when I saw Hillary Duff on the carpet and I've been seeing her a lot over this last like year doing interviews and kind of popping back out and get back in the mix mix. It just reminded me of such a good time, an anxiety, stress free time in life to see Hillary Duff. And Glorilla actually had the same reaction on the carpet. She, she was all of us in seeing Hillary Duff or if you got to meet her for the first time growing up watching her on TV and like you know, listening to her. Glorilla went crazy when she, she didn't even get when she got to see Hillary Duff on.
Lex P and Drea Nicole
Oh my God.
Lauren LaRosa
Now some of the categories that weren't aired, Album of the year, Cardi B was in the category. Olivia Dean was in the category. Playboi Cardi, Taylor Swift. Also there's, there's a few categories that weren't aired. Favorite hip hop album was not presented during the live broadcast. Um, they consider these like secondary categories and genre specific awards and normally those are handed off camera and during the pre show which is different than the main television broadcast which is focused on like the bigger, more mainstream pop awards and performances. Now the show was long as hell so I'm assuming they do that for, for time purposes. But it's not just like rap and R B before y' all get going. It's not just rapid R B categories that that happens. And you also have some country album categories that were not announced as well too. And favorite, the favorite rock.
Wheezy (WTF from Decisions, Decisions)

Watching Queen Latifah just effortlessly float through the American Music Awards as a host, number one, watching her do anything is just always so effortless. She just always seems like she's floating. But watching her do this, after watching her sit down with Angie Martinez, it, I, I'm just, I don't know, I just always, I, I hope that people that are in it can feel the love that us, people who are watching them be in it have for them. And I hope because Queen Latifah, I'm talking about, you know, me being nervous. At the top of this episode, Queen Latifah told People magazine as she was like promoting the fact that she would be hosting the AMAs, that she was a bit nervous. You know, it's a big night. I'm like, Queen Latifah nervous. She, and then she comes up here and she does it so effortlessly. But another thing I thought about is the fact that, like, you know, she has had such a, a monumentous career, but it's always just been or seemingly so things that she's actually loved and wanted to be a part of. You could tell she actually loved a lot of this music that she was bringing up on the stage. And a lot of these people, I ain't never heard of a day in my life. But Queen Latifah knew the song. She was singing them. But she talked to Angie Martinez about how she says no to certain things. It like she doesn't just chase money, she will literally say no. She doesn't care how big the stage is because she understands that the crown that she wears is heavy and. Yeah. And she's not afraid. She don't. She don't run from that. Let's take a listen to her speaking with Angie Martinez on. In real life, prior to the amaz, through the years.
Queen Latifah
In the beginning, I would literally just disappear and everybody be looking for me. I have things to do. I would just blow off everything and just, just bounce. And I would call my mother and I'm like, mom, I'm up here. I'll go to my brother's grave half the time, get two coronas, you know, one for him, one for me. I'm like, ma, I'm fine. I'm not speaking to anybody. I need a minute. And she would talk to whoever she needed to talk to to let them know, back up, give us some space. And it really would generally just take that day for me to, to re. Center, you know, and then I'll be ready for the world again. I'm ready for the fight all over again.
Lauren LaRosa
But what was it? What are you battling? Like, what were you.
Queen Latifah
Because I appear that I can handle a lot. People throw a lot at me to handle. And I'm like, I can't handle all that. There's a limit to how much I can handle. I may appear to be able to carry that load, but that load is heavy. And so when do I get to take a break? And if I say, hey, I need a minute, I need a break, but you want to. And then like, million dollar production. Yeah, yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
Which.
Queen Latifah
Which means nothing to me because I'm not materialistic. You. It could be a hundred million dollar production. It could be a billion dollar production. Guess what? I will bounce. You know what I mean?
Lauren LaRosa
Really?
Queen Latifah
Absolutely. I cannot be moved by money. It's too dangerous. You know what I mean? Like, that's not enough of a motivation for me. What I noticed is when I did things for a check, I hated it half the time. You know, the check cleared, the money was good, but I really did not enjoy it. It wasn't memorable. My heart wasn't in it. So I felt like I needed to do things that really meant something to me. And I mean, that was literally from my first couple of jobs.
Lauren LaRosa
Wow.

and in Busta Rhymes during the ama, there's this moment where he's called up to present another award. But first, he takes a minute to thank Queen Latifah. And it kind of all came full circle. Me, I'm like, okay, this is. This is that, you know, heavy feeling that she may get sometimes, even though it looks so effortless to us, because a lot of people, you know, she. She's carrying a lot of us literally on her shoulders. Let's take a listen to Busta Rhymes. Give Queen Latifah her flowers during the AMAs.
Dr. Jay Barnett
First and foremost, I just want to thank Queen Latif. Not just for tonight, but for being a nurturer and a mother to a lot of us artists that came after her.
Lauren LaRosa
To be honest, y', all, there was a lot of us there. And when I say a lot of us, I mean, of course, the hip hop girlies, the rap kids, R and B singers, the black folk, we were there. But I think even in the acts that you didn't know for sure or like, and. And because a lot of these people, you'll hear their names like bts, Doug, anything, you know, K pop. I'm always hearing the names of these acts, but I'm not listening to. These are not people I just put on my playlist and listen to all the time, right? But even in watching some of those acts come up and be presented with awards, honestly, Queen Latifah carried the show so well, I didn't even care that a lot of these people I don't actually listen to on my day to day. Like, I did not care. I was so tuned in to see what she would do next, like, even. And I know that this was on script because, you know, it's a big award show, but there was a moment where, like, she literally took a minute just to give Ludicrous some love. And I'm like, but that's because she be out here really, for us.
Lex P and Drea Nicole
This is why I love the Amas, because look who. I just spot it in the room. Luda. That's my brother right there. You see how I just start yelling whenever he's around? I can't even help it. I just have to stand up. When I move, you move just like that.
Lauren LaRosa
When I move, you move just like that.
Dr. Jay Barnett
When I move, you move just like that.
Lauren LaRosa
Latifah, bring that back.
Lex P and Drea Nicole
Hey, Luda. Got anthems. All right, I gotta roll out. We gotta give out some more. Roll some more awards. Roll out, roll out, roll out, roll out.
Lauren LaRosa
So shout out to her. Queen Latifah did an amazing job hosting the AMAs. And yeah, man, I'm I'm always in awe of the greats and preparing myself to be able to grow into these bigger spaces and bigger stages. So if you have not learned anything at all this episode, it's that, you know, as things expand and they grow, I don't think the nerves ever go away, not even for the greats. Like Queen Latifah was nervous tonight during the AMAs. But I think that the nerve just means that you really care and that you want to be prepared. And sometimes it's hard to lean into that and just take a moment and feel it. Let me know if you guys tuned into the amas, who were some of your favorite performers and who the heck do y' all think Global is about to have on that album? Let me know. I'm Lauren the Rosa everywhere L O R E N L O R O S A not almost forgotten spelled of my own name Lauren LaRosa Everywhere I tell you guys every single episode. My low riders, y' all could be anywhere with any old body, but you choose to be right here with me. I appreciate you guys and I'll catch you in my next episode.
