She's a CEO, author, podcast host, and she really impacts and changes families and brings dreams to life. So we're going to dive into it today. Welcome to the show.
Stacy Swiderski
Thank you so much. Thanks for having me.
Podcast Host
Of course. So let's talk about a bit about you and what you do and how you change lives and families and go from there.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah. So I am the CEO and founder of Family Source Consultants. We have been building families through third party reproduction, surrogacy and egg donation. Now for. We just celebrated 18 years in January, and we've had over 1400 babies born through our agency. Yeah. We work with families domestic and international, so worldwide.
Podcast Host
Great. And let's start at the beginning. How did you get into this?
Stacy Swiderski
You know, I got into it more from. On a personal level. So my husband and I, we have a son who is 19. I'm really aging myself. 19 now. And so we. I went through it personally, so we had to utilize a gestational surrogate to help build our family. So meaning it was my eggs, my husband's sperm, so genetically our child. And we used a surrogate and was that.
Podcast Host
And at that point you went through it and then what was the decision to okay, I want to build a business around this.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah. So after going through it personally, you know, I had so many people approaching me, how did I do it? And asking me questions. And at the time I was in real estate, so I was always in sales. And so I enjoyed talking to people. But then I, you know, over time I thought, you know, this is something that's really passion driven. And I knew there was a need for more agencies, and especially I'm from Chicago, so Illinois, and it's the surrogacy laws passed there recently in 2005. And so it was just a great time, the timing and everything.
Podcast Host
It's more popular now too, right?
Stacy Swiderski
Oh, my gosh. Yeah. It's so streamlined. Eighteen years ago, I mean, yeah, it was. People were doing it and. But it just wasn't as well known. And now people are just so, you know, open about it. Yeah, yeah.
Podcast Host
And let's so fast forward, you know, how. How's it been on that journey switching from real estate? Right. You went through it, you saw the power of it, obviously, and. And now you've helped thousands of people.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah, well, it's really rewarding for sure. Starting out with just, you know, a couple of us, and then now I have a very large, you know, staff and. But it's, you know, being an entrepreneur is hard. It's different when you're on that side of it. Right. But I couldn't imagine doing anything else and helping build families. And, you know, when the babies are born, that's just the most exciting, rewarding piece of it. But definitely, you know, building a company that I'm so passionate about, you know, it takes a lot of work. But when you, you know, you have to have passion in what you're doing because.
Podcast Host
And what were some of the ups and downs, the highlights and the hard parts?
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah. So, you know, the ups and downs definitely are for the families when they didn't achieve success right away, you know, and that's totally out of our hands.
Podcast Host
Because average at two or three attempts sometimes.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah, sometimes it's two or three attempts or sometimes, you know, they have those failures with their own embryos and then maybe they have to move on to, say for a heterosexual couple, they may have to move on to an egg donor and that's something that they never thought of doing. But you Know, over the years, as the success rates have really, you know, greatly improved genetically testing their embryos, we see a lot of success on the first embryo transfer. So it's really exciting. But that's definitely the harder part is just watching the struggles that our clients have gone through.
Podcast Host
Yeah, yeah. And I guess many have come to a point where they've already been trying for years, right?
Stacy Swiderski
Yes. Many of them have experienced so much heartache before they even come to us. So they come to us kind of already upset and angry. So we're like, all right, we, we get it.
Podcast Host
You're on the back foot.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah, yeah. But, you know, once the baby's born, they, like, love us, so it's like. Yeah, it all ends up well.
Podcast Host
Yeah. And what about the, you know, obviously that's the day job. Right. But you've progressed now with your own books, podcasts, and your own brand. Almost. Right? Yeah. What. What does that do? What's the story there?
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah, you know, so over the years, I've just starting out, you know, being an entrepreneur, and, you know, a lot of business owners, they don't make it right.
Podcast Host
It takes a lot, especially for over a decade. You know, a lot of people come and go for a few years.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah. So I've, you know, I've really sustained that. And it'll be almost, you know, two decades now that I've, I've, you know, grown a very successful multimillion dollar company. And it just, it allowed me now, as I have more staff, to not so much work in the company, but more on the company and just realizing what, other than family building? Because that's been my life now for a long time. I'm really driven by women entrepreneurship. That motivated me to write a book which should be released hopefully in about eight to ten weeks or so. It's purpose driven business and I'm excited for that. I started a podcast just about six weeks ago and that's really fun. So, yeah, just really surrounded by motivating others.
Podcast Host
Yeah.
Stacy Swiderski
And just businesses a lot. And using, you know, the seven days a week that we have to really put in as much work as I can.
Podcast Host
Give us a few takeaways from the book and podcast. Right. What are some of the key points you try and really hit home and teach.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah. Yeah. So, you know, with the book, it starts out with really my why? Yeah, why in business? Why Family building and then why, you know, really supporting women through business or just their life. It doesn't even have to be their, their business per se, for the reader or the Viewer to see that it's not all butterflies and rainbows. Right. But if you keep being persistent, your goals will, you know, will come true. But you really have to. It's really, I think, my bubble of 18 years of building and growing and scaling my company to be able to put out even my little secrets. And that can maybe help others that I wish I had, you know, when I was growing my company, because I always had the grit, I always had the work ethic. I had all that. But some things I learned along, you know, the way that if I can help somebody else, that's what I want to do. My podcast is really cool, though, because that is something that every week I have a new guest on y. And every new guest, every. And it's always a female, of course. It's called she Decides is the name of my podcast. And it's really, you know, you decide your. Your life, what you want to do, you know, whether you want to be a mom, whether you want to be a business owner, whatever it is. But it's really dedicated to especially the entrepreneur women and. Or maybe females who are in pretty high level, you know, executive roles. How do they do it? While they are, you know, whether they're raising a family or just living life. How. How do they do it? So it's pretty.
Podcast Host
What got you. I love the name, by the way.
Stacy Swiderski
She decides.
Podcast Host
Yeah, yeah.
Stacy Swiderski
But her life rules. Her story is like.
Podcast Host
Well, I like that. And I think gender, regardless. Most people don't follow that in life, sadly.
Stacy Swiderski
That's right. Yeah.
Podcast Host
So, yeah, so, yeah.
Stacy Swiderski
Regardless of gender.
Podcast Host
Yeah, yeah. So. But so what? Because I noticed this all the time, and I think, you know, so many people talk to me like, I moved from a small town in England, came to America by myself in my early 20s with one suitcase.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah.
Podcast Host
And I, you know, everyone's, especially in the uk, they're so jealous of me. And I'm always like, you do realize you can move, right?
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah. You're not a tree, you're not stuck.
Podcast Host
Yeah. Yeah. But most people think they are, you know, so, you know, so I share a lot of, like, that passion of like, because it is life changing when you decide to do something.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah.
Podcast Host
Out the norm. Right. For me, that was moving to Florida from a small town in England, becoming an entrepreneur, all those things. And for you, it was going from real estate to. You're probably doing pretty well on it. Good sales commission and start a business. Right. Big business at the time.
Stacy Swiderski
Right, right.
Podcast Host
What made what. What makes you passionate about teaching people this decision Making, you know, I think.
Stacy Swiderski
I'd have to go way back and coming from, you know, I never came from money, I never came from, you know, any anybody motivating me. I did really motivate myself and I just wanted more in life than what I had growing up. And I knew the only way to do that is you got to do it for yourself and you got to want it and you got to do it and you know, I, Money, right. I, I, you want money, right. So you got to work for it. And you know, I wanted to really hit that threshold of, you know, and into the making, you know, multimillion dollar company. And, and that's something like me even saying that it's almost like an uncomfortable comes from an uncomfortable place. But I know that I always wanted to do and be something bigger than what?
Podcast Host
Well, I'm often, obviously I don't know this about you, but when we dive into the money side with 99% of people in my industry and entrepreneurs, it's not like the physical, oh, I want to buy a Lamborghini. It's the freedom, the access, the opportunities, you know, it's the security and all those things that it's all of it.
Stacy Swiderski
It's not just saying I want to go buy a name brand purse. It's because I want that opportunity to also do for others and to advocate for things that I feel are really important and that obviously takes money to do that.
Podcast Host
And what are a few of the. So you're starting to interview all these different people with this theme of. She decides.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah, she decides.
Podcast Host
What are some of the similarities, the trends you see over and over again from these people that have created great life.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah. So a lot of those trends really are just the grit and it's really the why behind them being successful and knowing that at the end of the day, it's up to them. They have to be able to motivate themselves. But I also feel like the common denominator that we all have is really being around a supportive group, like positive people, no excuse people. So you have to. Because if you bring people into your life that are throwing excuses at you're a ton. You can't do something or that's silly or whatever, you're going to start believing it. Right. So you really have to surround yourself. Even if it's a small circle around people who are established and go getters.
Podcast Host
Love it. So that's the podcast side. What about the book side? Is it similar lessons in that. Tell us a bit about the book.
Stacy Swiderski
It is so I mean, it is, but it isn't. Right. So the book really is. Is really all about purpose driven, you know, success.
Podcast Host
Yeah.
Stacy Swiderski
And so it's, it's really kind of the behind the scenes of what.
Podcast Host
But that kind of links, right? Because it's like if you're passionate and purpose about that, I think you go. You go much more headstrong into it.
Stacy Swiderski
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Podcast Host
Half the battle is like, I find in people, like not living their dreams and doing what they want is they don't even know what that looks like. They don't thought about it.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah, right. That's right. They don't know. And. And sometimes I think if you. Each day, if you're doing better than you were the day, then that's okay. Right. So I think really, you know, the podcast is. Is more of a inspiring and all that, but the book is really going to be like, how it was my way, building my, my business.
Podcast Host
Well, they go so well because, I mean, some people joke, right, that like, most people in life are like sheep or zombies moving through life.
Stacy Swiderski
Not me, but.
Podcast Host
But I think once someone breaks out of that mold and then realizes, oh, I can move cities or get a new job or start a business, it becomes like a drug, it's addictive. Then you go, what else can I do, right? Can I now move a different country? Could I start a second business? Could I buy a bigger house and 100.
Stacy Swiderski
It becomes an addiction.
Podcast Host
Yeah.
Stacy Swiderski
And I'm a very driven individual. And I think once you see that you can achieve something, you start to really kind of depend on yourself a little more. Like, you know what? I did that. And that was tough then. And then it starts almost getting easier.
Podcast Host
It's like a snowball. It gets bigger, you think bigger too.
Stacy Swiderski
It gets bigger. And even though maybe your goals might be different or bigger or whatever it is, it's just, it's really. Is a stepping stone. And I'm. Change doesn't bother me. I actually thrive change. But I just, I knew growing up I always wanted to be something bigger than what I've ever seen.
Podcast Host
Surrounded around, I was the same. Yeah, much the same. And. And I knew, I think from podcasts and flying to America and stuff, like, for me it was like, that's the place to go do it. Because it's like, no one's doing it here, you know?
Stacy Swiderski
Exactly. Right. And you have to take advantage of those opportunities, especially now. I mean, look what we have with podcast and social media and all of that. And you just have to get yourself out there and you gotta like let go of the embarrassment of things because at the end of the day, who cares? Right? People are gonna judge no matter what. So you might as well just do your thing and really be your biggest cheerleader and find yourself maybe some good.
Podcast Host
Mentors and, and let's talk about it specifically for women.
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah.
Podcast Host
Because you know, obviously that's your passion and, and, and, and that area and educated and you know, I mean that's changed so much in the last hundred years too. I was listening to a social media clip, I think it was like 50, 60 years ago where they were asking a big event or something, you know what, how women should be successful and be seen. And it was like the opposite of what it is today. It was like they should support the man. That shouldn't do anything. A successful wife doesn't do anything but.
Stacy Swiderski
Right, right.
Podcast Host
Support the man. Right. And there's, there's been this amazing shift and it's still ongoing, but it is an amazing shift in the last 20, 30, 40 years. And I mean every 10 years it gets better and better. Yeah, right. So, so specifically for women now, what are some tips you'd give them?
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah, you know, I think speaking of supporting your man or whoever it is in your life, that you can still do that while supporting yourself and being independent and also expecting that support from say your spouse as well. It goes two ways now where it's not just one sided but definitely, you know, some of the takeaways for sure is again, find yourself somebody like a good mentor that's really gonna lift you up and support you, but be okay with it not being perfect all the time. Because I think when you have, when you achieve success, you know, it wasn't a straight line. You're going to make a lot of mistakes before you get to that, you know, that, that, that success and be okay with that. Be comfortable with imperfection. Yeah, I think is important. But most importantly, always remember your why just take advantage of, of all that we have that really, you know, like just social media and all that. And you know, also I, I, especially for the business side of me, sometimes you got to spend a little money to make money too. So you know, put it out there in the marketing, you know, put the dollar, you know.
Podcast Host
Well, I think so many people are scared of that because like both of us, we, you know, if you grow up broke, some they want to hoard any money. But some people like me and you were able to shift our mindset and become more abundant. But I still see a lot of entrepreneurs that make way more than the average. You know, Joe blogs, right. They're making 100, 150, 200. But they still have this broke mindset because they like in scarcity. So what would you say to someone in that more scarcity mindset?
Stacy Swiderski
I think you got to just kind of get out of your comfort zone a little bit. For sure. Because, you know, if, let's say financially, again, like I said, sometimes you have to spend a little bit money to make money. You just, you have to obviously leverage it in the ways that you, you know, and watch it, like where you put your money. If it's working here, maybe feed it some more. If you're seeing a big roi, keep throwing at it because it's. Eventually it's, it's going to pay off.
Podcast Host
Yeah. And like you say, I mean, just like you're going to win, lose some and make good mistakes. Good, good decision, bad decision. It'll be the same with money. You'll do one bad investment, one good one. And Warren Buffett always says, you know, best investor technically in the world, probably, he says, you're going to win and lose some. Just make sure your wins are big and your losses are.
Stacy Swiderski
That's right. Try to keep your losses as small as possible. But they're going to happen. They're going to happen in business. Business.
Podcast Host
I lost half a million in an investment. One's the most I've ever lost in one investment. Half a million dollars. And my parents said to me, you know, because we grew up with no money, they're like, how.
Stacy Swiderski
They're like, oh, my gosh, it's crazy.
Podcast Host
How does it not bother you? And it, and, and I said, it's just you. Why? I know how, like, I can make half a million profit back in a month. Yeah. So it's just. Okay. I'm gonna have to, I lose a month in my life, I get, you know. Okay.
Stacy Swiderski
But you will make it up and then some.
Podcast Host
Yeah, yeah. Deals. I've made way more than half a mil. Right. So, yeah, but that's the mindset difference. Right. Because I, I, you know, I did pause for a minute. I mean, yeah. I guess half a million is quite a lot to lose in your 20s. I was in my 20s, too. Right. And most people would probably be crying in a corner for a long time. They would give up again. But it didn't really phase me too much.
Stacy Swiderski
And you have to get right back on and, and realize, like, okay, well, this maybe is an investment. You learn it also. You learn from those mistakes, and then you Just pivot.
Podcast Host
Yeah, exactly. So, last couple of questions around your, you know, your full episode and the legacy side. Number one, what does a legacy mean to you? And number two, what will they get from your episode of Legacy Makers?
Stacy Swiderski
Yeah, So a legacy, for me, it really means to leave behind everything that you've worked to do for others. Right. So. And for yourself. So, you know, it's definitely for me. I've built families for generations and generations and generations. I'm empowering women. You know, just people, too. Right.
Podcast Host
Changing lives is the theme.
Stacy Swiderski
Changing lives and family. And also. Yeah. And personally, for my legacy, say, for my family, is starting a legacy to where my family feels a sense of security and where I never had that growing up. So that was a legacy that I'm really proud to leave behind for my family and to really pave the way for especially my granddaughter, my, you know, my daughter and any females that come into my path.
Podcast Host
Love that. And what will they get from your episode? If they're watching this before that they haven't got, maybe from the podcast today?
Stacy Swiderski
I think they will definitely get that. It wasn't, you know, success. It may look easy to people who have never, like, they just think, oh, they're so lucky. Right. But it takes a lot of hard work. They don't see the, you know, the hard work that goes into it. So I think they're gonna see that. But they. Most importantly that is if they remember their why and something that they really want to achieve in life, big or small, to just go after your dreams because only you can do it. You can't depend on anybody else to make it happen. Only you can make it happen. And that's something that. Yeah, it's just at the end of the day, the next, you know, you have only so many hours in a day. The next day is gonna start again, so you better jump back on that wagon and, you know, if you have a dream, make. Keep pushing forward.
Podcast Host
Love that. Love that. So, guys, that's a wrap. Great ending message. A ton of nuggets within there, but a great ending message to finish on. Go after it. Go build an impact. Keep building a legacy, like we always say, and I'll see you very soon. Take care.
