Seth Meyers
It's the Lonely island and Seth Meyers podcast.
Andy Samberg
I started recording, by the way, guys, just in case. Because I'm coming in hot. Yeah, because I'm coming in hot. I'm trying to think of a good anecdote. That Mother lover was a great short, and I'm panicking.
Seth Meyers
I'm coming in. Andy. Andy, you filled me in on a detail about your day that maybe the other gentleman would like to know.
Jorma Taccone
I think they could probably guess.
Andy Samberg
Oh, you beat. Beat on. On the birth of our nation.
Jorma Taccone
I got a Fourth of July be. And it was no slouch either, I'll tell you that.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, it was a long.
Andy Samberg
What does that mean?
Seth Meyers
There's a lot of words.
Andy Samberg
Oh, okay.
Jorma Taccone
61 words over 400 points. Y4 pangrams. It was an insane clean bee that I got today. It felt great. I also got letterboxden, too, so I'm feeling honestly like I'm walking on air, feeling really good.
Andy Samberg
That's the first time that I've heard that word said out loud. Pan. Did you say pan? Grams? Pan.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
Pangram. It's when you use all the letter.
Andy Samberg
No, I. I've played the game, Seth. I have played the game.
Seth Meyers
How did you think you would say it?
Andy Samberg
I never said it out loud, so in my mind it was panagram.
Seth Meyers
Or like you were just adding a word. You were adding a letter that wasn't in it. Yeah, because I would say pangram is a definition of pronounced like it's spelled.
Andy Samberg
No, yeah, I. I just never looked at the word really? But this is.
Jorma Taccone
Norm's just so, like, entrenched in the bananagram culture.
Seth Meyers
Right, right, right.
Andy Samberg
That's true. I'm more of a bananagram guy.
Jorma Taccone
I think that somewhere was creeping into his subconscious.
Seth Meyers
Hey, somebody wrote in Andy that would a good slang for if you queen bead, because, you know, you often obviously have to say I queen bead.
Jorma Taccone
Thanks for saying.
Seth Meyers
Would a slang be I quibbied.
Andy Samberg
At least something could come out of Quibi.
Jorma Taccone
Hell, yeah. I almost feel like it's blasphemous not to. From this point forward, at least something.
Andy Samberg
Eternal could come out of Quibi.
Seth Meyers
You know, it'd be nice if something good came out of Quibi.
Andy Samberg
Another word that we say.
Jorma Taccone
Well, guess what, guys? I quibbied today.
Seth Meyers
You quibbied today. On their nation's founding. Hey, I want to try something real quick. All right, so I'm going to say, hi, I'm Seth, and then I want Andy. I want you to say, hi, I'm Andy. Then we'll go, Yorm. Hi, I'm Yorm. And then Akiva. Hi, I'm Akiva. So we got it real quick. It'll go, Andy, say it really fast.
Andy Samberg
Because I'm coming in hot today.
Seth Meyers
No, to say. It's like. Just say it normal. Ready and we'll see if this works fine. Hi, I'm Seth.
Jorma Taccone
I'm Andy.
Andy Samberg
Hi, I'm Jorma.
Akiva Schaffer
Hi, I'm Akiva.
Seth Meyers
And hi.
Andy Samberg
That did not work. Whatever you did did not work at all.
Seth Meyers
We didn't hear it. Sam. How do we do it where we hear it?
Akiva Schaffer
I heard the echo of like a weird. I was like, wow, is there like a weird echo in the very deep background?
Andy Samberg
I like how much that sucked though.
Seth Meyers
By the way, the amount of work I put into this was one email dashed off 12 minutes ago. So.
Akiva Schaffer
Yeah, but there was supposed to be something at the end and Zoom had filtered it out.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, total bust.
Andy Samberg
Should we do it again, Zev?
Seth Meyers
Let's see if it works now. It has to be three times as good as I know it is.
Andy Samberg
Definitely do it again.
Jorma Taccone
Well, the best part about anything going subpar today is that especially you East Coasters are actively ignoring your family during the Fourth.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, it's Fourth of July again. 11:00am not ideal to leave your family on Fourth of July, but Yoram and I are just 2:00pm Absolute disaster.
Jorma Taccone
Like people are showing up at the queue.
Seth Meyers
People are starting to.
Andy Samberg
Yeah. And here's the thing. My dad said that no one could start barbecuing until 4. He made it a rule. So we're. I'm actually. Okay.
Jorma Taccone
I can go till the bare minimum. Yorm. You got people showing up being like, where should I put these buns? And your guys wives are like Seth.
Andy Samberg
And your usually answer that that did already happen. I will say that that had to happen twice.
Seth Meyers
I left a beach. I left a beach and had to tell multiple people I was going to do a podcast.
Akiva Schaffer
You could have lied.
Andy Samberg
It sounds like a lie. It sounds like there's no way you're doing that on the 4th.
Seth Meyers
What a bad. I mean if you were having like an affair and that was the best you'd come up with. Sorry, podcast beckons.
Akiva Schaffer
It's actually pretty good because no one will ask a follow up question.
Seth Meyers
Right? Nobody wants to hear about your fucking podcast.
Akiva Schaffer
No, they're not like, oh, which one?
Seth Meyers
What's what? Who's the guy?
Akiva Schaffer
So it's actually very clean.
Jorma Taccone
How was the banter?
Seth Meyers
And your. Your co hosts, were they over jobed under job who came in Hot.
Jorma Taccone
And did they quibby?
Seth Meyers
Did they quibby?
Akiva Schaffer
We skipped a week, so now this is a distant memory. But I remember feeling some vindication of people saying, Lincoln Square.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Akiva Schaffer
When I saw the comments.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. I wanted to own up to that. You were right on Lincoln Square. All right, should we try it?
Andy Samberg
Let's try it. Let's try it again.
Seth Meyers
All right. So, Andy, the one thing you did mess up, you're supposed to say, hi. Hi, I'm Andy.
Jorma Taccone
I realized that after Keev and Jorm both did it, I was like, oh, odd man out.
Seth Meyers
All right. Hi, I'm Seth.
Jorma Taccone
Hi, I'm Andy.
Andy Samberg
Hi, I'm Jorma.
Akiva Schaffer
Hi, I'm Akiva.
Seth Meyers
And hi, I am your mother.
Andy Samberg
That's nice. That's nice.
Seth Meyers
I am your mother. I went back and watched that and texted with Fred about it. I forgot. Sudeik is very funny because one of the things about that sketch is it's very obvious to Andy and Zack's characters that they should recast.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
And Jason really jumps to her defense mid sketch.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. Yeah. You need one of those.
Seth Meyers
And it's that thing of, like, look at her. Look how beautiful she is. And it just cuts to Fred just, like, really not. It's not that he's doing nothing. It's that it's the most subtle. He really is playing a woman who believes she's got it going on.
Jorma Taccone
Right. Yeah.
Seth Meyers
Really good.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, we like characters that like themselves.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, we do and often does. Hey, this was Yoram. Can I. Can I share what you offered or. I didn't offer. You asked me to do you a solid a couple Fridays back.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, I. I asked Seth to do a solid. He couldn't do it, which was a real fucking. I don't know. It was a real stab in the.
Seth Meyers
Gut, I guess it was a content killer because it would have been great content.
Andy Samberg
Yeah. Well, why don't you tell him, Seth?
Seth Meyers
Jorm asked if I would drive him home from his vasectomy.
Andy Samberg
I just thought it would be good content for the pod.
Seth Meyers
Oh, yeah.
Jorma Taccone
So you didn't actually need the ride. You were just like, how do I fold this into the cast? My main passion.
Akiva Schaffer
That's awesome, actually.
Andy Samberg
Yeah. It would have been a real talking point. I think you're trying to create things.
Akiva Schaffer
To talk about on. So you have, like, talk show stories.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, totally.
Andy Samberg
Here's the thing, Seth. Here's the thing, Seth. I'm rescheduling for October, so there's still time.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, you didn't do it.
Andy Samberg
I didn't do it, it was too big of a pain in the ass to get down there. So, you know, there's. There's more than enough time. And honestly, if any of you guys are out on the east coast, I would love if multiple guys could pick me up. It'd be really nice.
Akiva Schaffer
Oh, a whole party.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
Yorm did say, I. I wish Lauren had the kind of sense of humor where I could ask him.
Andy Samberg
I seriously thought of that, but I was like, he's not going to think this is funny. Oh my God.
Seth Meyers
It would be. I feel like you text him and then one of his assistants would email and be like, he can't that day.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, yeah. It would never be like a. Are you fucking kidding me? He doesn't pick people up.
Andy Samberg
At least send a voice note though, of encouragement.
Jorma Taccone
It would be like, oh, he actually can't that day. But he does wish you the best. Yeah.
Seth Meyers
A comment I enjoyed. Just watched Total Recall for the first time and can't believe there aren't 40 more Lonely island sketches about this movie.
Jorma Taccone
Thank you.
Akiva Schaffer
Every scene has possibilities.
Seth Meyers
I mean, I was thinking the scene where he like pulls the like tracker out of his nose.
Andy Samberg
I mean it feels so memorable. Oh God.
Jorma Taccone
Even just the like sort of like vaguely claymation shots when they are exposed to the Mars air.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, yeah. A bunch of large Mars shots.
Jorma Taccone
Exactly.
Andy Samberg
Yeah. Wait, is that body horror? Is that technically body, like when he takes it out of his nose? Would you put that in the body horror?
Seth Meyers
I would say that's maybe body horror. I think that's fair.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, that's like a new genre that I'm hearing about a lot.
Jorma Taccone
Sorry.
Seth Meyers
Needless to say, you're like a professional.
Jorma Taccone
Director that directs movies and has worked in the business for 20 plus years and you just casually move on to.
Andy Samberg
The next story part of the show.
Jorma Taccone
I'm actually just hearing about this phrase.
Andy Samberg
Because I heard about this body also.
Seth Meyers
Are you guys hip to film noir? Have you heard about this?
Jorma Taccone
Did you know that for a stretch of time there were many western films?
Andy Samberg
Have you heard about this film? Know we are. Hey, let's talk about Mother Lover though, because we don't have much time. Right? Guys, we should really get into this.
Seth Meyers
All right?
Jorma Taccone
I mean, we could.
Akiva Schaffer
You have till 4 o'.
Jorma Taccone
Clock.
Akiva Schaffer
There's a race.
Seth Meyers
I just blew it. You said 3:30 and then you told us about your dad's rule and now we know you lied to us.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Akiva Schaffer
Did you push back on that rule? Like, why is it 4pm?
Andy Samberg
He, he doesn't want people to get too Hot. It's his. It's his birthday. So I'm just listening to my dad's rules. It's.
Akiva Schaffer
He's waiting for the sun to get lower in the sky.
Andy Samberg
Yes, he is. He doesn't want anyone to overheat.
Akiva Schaffer
What happens before that, then? Are people not outside?
Andy Samberg
People fry, dude. They fry. Yeah. And also my family tends to, like, look straight up at the sun. So you know what? You really want to do it later in the day?
Akiva Schaffer
You got squinters?
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. A lot of sun. Sun squinters.
Jorma Taccone
We were trying to schedule this podcast on our text thread, and y said, I can't do that. My dad's play happening. And then what? And then what did I say?
Andy Samberg
Everybody said, yeah, my dad's play. I think you just said, same.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, same.
Andy Samberg
And then Seth followed suit, and I think Akiva did too.
Seth Meyers
All our dads, I said that if you. If you grew up in Berkeley, you never saw your dad because he always had a play. That was.
Andy Samberg
That's kind of true, guys. That's not like. Yeah, it's a lot of plays.
Seth Meyers
Hey, somebody said you guys talked a lot about the. Which Lonely island cast member is which chipmunk? Do you guys have a theory as to which one of you is which Beastie Boy?
Jorma Taccone
This one is difficult.
Akiva Schaffer
Hinges on which song that we're doing and what fake voices we're putting on.
Andy Samberg
It usually has to do with voice.
Seth Meyers
I will say somebody. Somebody offered their pick, and it got into my head what I would say.
Jorma Taccone
I mean, if you talk about, like, our baseline voice tones, it would be Akiva is Adrock, I'm Mike D. And Yorms mca because yorms basiest slowest, Keeves highest. And that leaves me in the middle.
Akiva Schaffer
It's when we're doing those voices, though. It's not all the time.
Jorma Taccone
On the other hand, when we did Bash Brothers songs, I was more mca.
Andy Samberg
Ish. Yeah. Just in terms of flow or.
Jorma Taccone
Well, because Jose Canseco, the way that we were writing him, was a little more that.
Akiva Schaffer
Like on Sushi Glory Hole. I'm not going high at all.
Jorma Taccone
No.
Seth Meyers
So.
Akiva Schaffer
But we're not doing Beastie Boys at all on that.
Seth Meyers
I think vibe wise, though.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. Okay.
Seth Meyers
Andy is Ad Rock, Yoram is Mike Dunn, and Keev is mca.
Andy Samberg
Oh, yeah. That's pretty. Right? Cool.
Jorma Taccone
I mean, if I could have chosen one, like, from the time I was a little kid that I would have most wanted to have been, it would have been Adrox. So thank you.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. This is heartbreaking. Remember, it Was two weeks ago, we were talking about Andy. You said in the stewed. And then the closed captioning said, in this dude, right? And so we had you do it a bunch of times fast.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, yeah.
Seth Meyers
And then YouTube said, in the stew, in the stew, in the stew.
Akiva Schaffer
It made a left turn there.
Andy Samberg
Smart.
Seth Meyers
S T E W Like the end of some fable where you went to a witch.
Jorma Taccone
So now if I say, in the stew, what is it gonna say? In the stew. In the stew. In the stew, in the stew.
Andy Samberg
I don't wanna get too tangential here, but do you guys have, like, a favorite soup? Because I was thinking about this recently.
Akiva Schaffer
I'm not too tangential at all.
Seth Meyers
A few moments ago, yhorm was like, we gotta get to mother lover. And now he's like, wait, wait, no, no.
Jorma Taccone
Sound off.
Seth Meyers
Favorite soup. Since we're talking. And let's hear from the koia.
Jorma Taccone
Hey, I just realized my dad doesn't have any plays opening today. We could talk forever.
Andy Samberg
I got the four guys. I got. I don't know what you heard, but I got some four.
Seth Meyers
They're doing. They're doing notes on opening nights at four.
Jorma Taccone
To answer the question in earnest. I have a lot of soups that I really like. Okay, well, like, I love a French onion. I fuck with a Beef Borley.
Seth Meyers
Borley.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, Beef Borley Borley.
Akiva Schaffer
What were some of the favorite Hale and Hardy soups down in 30?
Jorma Taccone
Oh, my God. Yeah, there was that, like, Moroccan peanut and something chicken one that was.
Seth Meyers
That was basically like peanut butter with a little bit chicken in it. Hale and Hardy was a soup place in the basement of 30 Rock, where there. Again, when you say in the basement, it seems like a shady place to get food, but there's like a concourse of restaurants. And Halen Hardy was a real go to for an SNL rewrite table.
Andy Samberg
It was a real go to. And there was a moment at a rewrite table. I think it was your rewrite table, Seth. Where me. I know. Me and Keith were in the room and Higgins walked in and started talking about Pale and Farty. Do you guys go to Palin Farty? And then within. In 20 minutes, me and Keev had made. Using his brother texting, his brother had made a website called paleandfarty.com.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
And then while Higgins was in the room, then we're like, hey, check it out. Like, look up the website.
Jorma Taccone
Holy shit.
Andy Samberg
This is pretty impressive.
Akiva Schaffer
Yeah, I don't remember that at all.
Andy Samberg
You don't? Oh, man.
Seth Meyers
I do remember that you owned the Domain it was super. It was like, very unsettling to look at as a website. It was like neon colors.
Andy Samberg
It's pretty horrendous colors, like hurt your eyes.
Jorma Taccone
Well, I would hope paleandparty.com.
Andy Samberg
I don't think exist anymore.
Akiva Schaffer
No, no, there's no way. My brother kept paying for the domain name.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, God. Can I say something embarrassing? Of course. It makes sense that it was Keev's brother. I thought you were talking about Higgins brother.
Andy Samberg
That would have been way funnier.
Jorma Taccone
I was like, what?
Akiva Schaffer
Al Higgins just did it up?
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. I was like, what the fuck does he know about.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, the guy's good at coding.
Seth Meyers
My memory of Halen Hardy soup is. You know, they'd come with those little oyster crackers, and I remember just stress eating oyster crackers where I'd bite them in half, you know, because you can kind of split them in half with your teeth. And thinking to myself that I'd never have a funny idea ever again in my life.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, they're like the pistachio of crackers.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. Oh, I was gonna say everybody sort of.
Andy Samberg
Mine's gazpacho. Mines gazpacho to end that.
Akiva Schaffer
Jesus Christ.
Andy Samberg
Okay, go ahead, keep going.
Seth Meyers
Just keep going, everybody. Our listeners thought balcony song got hosed and a bunch of people quoted Keef saying, what's the point of the show? Is applause and laughter the point of the show? And I didn't think I got that.
Akiva Schaffer
Angry, guys, you know, justified. It was just normal.
Seth Meyers
Hey, I have a question. Keev is. Oh. So I went, traveled. I went to Amsterdam, brought Ash with me.
Akiva Schaffer
I wasn't sweating.
Seth Meyers
You know what? If you love love, I think it was a pretty special time.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, interesting. I love love. That's so great.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. But I was at the airport. I had four or five different people say queen in the airport.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, man, that's cool.
Seth Meyers
And the best thing about it is different people think it is meant to be delivered in different ways. Some people say it like it's a secret. They get real almost like, this is how you know I'm a spy as well.
Andy Samberg
That's my favorite way. That's my favorite.
Seth Meyers
They'll be like, righteous kill. Other people will like screaming across the concourse like, I just gave the Mel Gibson Braveheart speech.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I just gave.
Seth Meyers
Oh, sorry. They yell quite army. And then I. I righteous kill it back. Yeah, Quaid army. But I did really fist up, yell righteous kill at somebody. And then my son asked about it and I'm like, this is going to take too long. I don't want to talk about it.
Jorma Taccone
Someone said it to me last week, Seth. But they said both of them and I had nothing to say back.
Seth Meyers
Oh, they said, quaid Army. Right.
Jorma Taccone
Just killing. Quade Army. Righteous kill. And I was like, where do I fit in?
Andy Samberg
You guys? You guys, if you guys see us, please don't take both things. If you see us.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, you can say it however you want. You can say, like, a secret. You can say it like it's a. You know, something to scream. But, like, please don't say both.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. Because then we can't say righteous kill back. We have nothing to do.
Seth Meyers
You fuck us up, you fuck us.
Jorma Taccone
Sitting on our hands.
Seth Meyers
We look idiotic. Don't do that. Last comment before we get to. Although, you know, I'm going to find some other note I took, but find.
Jorma Taccone
Some fucking dope dishes.
Seth Meyers
Oh, I was going to say Keev. Is there. In Naked Gun, is there a righteous kill?
Akiva Schaffer
No, I gotta. If I was writing it now, he'd say it five times.
Seth Meyers
No, but, like, is there, like a kill in the movie that is righteous?
Akiva Schaffer
I don't think so.
Seth Meyers
Okay, gotcha.
Andy Samberg
I think that there's an even more righteous thing that happens at the end, and you gotta go see the movie to. You know, sometimes killing isn't always righteous. Guys.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, Yeah. I was just hoping there might be a moment, like in Brick Breaker. What's that? Minecraft. Oh, yeah. Movie where, like, at some point, a zombie jumps on a chicken and everybody throws their popcorn in there.
Akiva Schaffer
Chicken jockey.
Jorma Taccone
Come on, come on. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Akiva Schaffer
You're like, what's our chicken jockey moment where we can destroy theaters?
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Akiva Schaffer
I need to figure out where to tell people to riot.
Jorma Taccone
I like thinking about the Snood movie coming out and Lauren in the theater going, yeah. Oh, my God, it's a purple ball. Oh, my God. Some purple.
Andy Samberg
Purple bubble.
Jorma Taccone
Tearing his shirt off. Ye.
Akiva Schaffer
Somebody's on his shoulders. And everything everyone reveals they're covered in purple face paint.
Andy Samberg
Everyone shows it.
Seth Meyers
Just got an email to my AOL Snood movie coming out.
Akiva Schaffer
We just secured Broadway video, just secured the Snood rights.
Seth Meyers
Will I attend the premiere?
Jorma Taccone
What do you fucking think?
Andy Samberg
Dressed as one of the major Snoods.
Seth Meyers
All right, so here we go, you guys. It's again. I'm going to gloss over because we've definitely talked about it. Mother Liver was voted on by your peers as the best digital short, and I loved watching it again. But my first question to you because it was only five months after Dick in a Box, oh, my God.
Jorma Taccone
Is that true?
Seth Meyers
How. Well, maybe it's not. I will say that it starts with a title card that says five months later. Oh.
Jorma Taccone
Oh. In terms of the story of these characters.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Akiva Schaffer
Dick in a Box was Christmas. But Was it Christmas 2007? This is May 9th.
Seth Meyers
I can't imagine he didn't host twice in the same year. So it was.
Jorma Taccone
No, it had been years.
Akiva Schaffer
This is May 9, 2009. So this is a year and a half later in the real world.
Jorma Taccone
15 years.
Seth Meyers
And my question is, did you know he was coming back? Did you know you were gonna do the Dick in the Box guys again? Like, you obviously knew you were gonna do a shirt with him. Did you know you'd do those two dudes? Yes, right away?
Jorma Taccone
I mean, we were terrified of it.
Andy Samberg
Totally terrified to do it again.
Jorma Taccone
Pressure was on, and we had even talked to him. I think he called us, like, ahead of his week to be like, how the fuck are we gonna top that? And we were like, I don't think we can.
Akiva Schaffer
Well, he also had been there, obviously, for the Kathy thing. That was a couple episodes back.
Jorma Taccone
That must have been it. Instead, instead of him calling, he probably talked to us about it then.
Akiva Schaffer
Yeah, I feel like he was like, what are we gonna do? Yeah, I think there was discussion, like, is it those guys again? Is it something new?
Andy Samberg
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know if it was, like, a given, but, like, obviously it seemed like the right thing to do if we could come up with an idea that was. It was so scary, though, just to.
Jorma Taccone
I think we all wanted it to be them again, and I think he wanted it to be them again. If it felt good. We knew it was the Mother's Day show for a while. And the premise that it ended up being loosely, we came up with immediately. And then. And we did this on the third one also. And then we're like, okay, now, is that really the best thing that we can come up with for this? And then eventually just decided, yes, fuck it.
Andy Samberg
And I feel like in both scenarios, Justin was like, yeah, it's good. It's good. Like. Like, we're good to go. Like, that's fucking. And then for three days, like, all of us were like, I don't know.
Jorma Taccone
I mean, he correctly was like, it's better to just get started on it.
Andy Samberg
Yes.
Seth Meyers
Right.
Andy Samberg
Yes.
Akiva Schaffer
And Andy, you. You correctly remembered the other day when we were prepping for this. Cause we do a lot of. Me and Andy do a lot of side prepping where we talk.
Seth Meyers
What are we Going.
Andy Samberg
No wonder it goes so well.
Akiva Schaffer
What are we going to wear? What are we going to wear for the pod?
Seth Meyers
And you try to do it with Jorn, but he's off with a gazpacho shot.
Akiva Schaffer
Oh, he's not reaching. But you were saying that, like, Timberlake was from the ground up part of this one.
Jorma Taccone
Yes.
Akiva Schaffer
Whereas the other one, you know, we didn't know what it was. We were off trying to figure it out and crack it. And then he came in pretty late into it and then added his spice over the whole thing and made it awesome. This one. Because we knew what we were in for. He was just in our office.
Jorma Taccone
Yes.
Akiva Schaffer
And we built it totally from scratch.
Andy Samberg
I do remember him feeling a little frustrated with how long we were sort of taking to, like, decide on whether we should do it or not. Though the next one, even more so.
Jorma Taccone
I feel like that was more on the third one.
Andy Samberg
The third one? Yeah. More so.
Jorma Taccone
For sure.
Andy Samberg
For sure.
Seth Meyers
Did. I just want to clarify. These gentlemen never had names, right?
Andy Samberg
Not at the time, no.
Seth Meyers
But it is fun to have recurring characters who are so iconic in their appearance that they do not need be named.
Jorma Taccone
The Dick in a Box guys.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, the Dick in a Box guys. So how do we want to do it? Because I have a lot to ask about. So you knew.
Jorma Taccone
I mean, we knew. We decided that was going to be the premise. We got a beat from Yoram's brother Asa again and Drew Campbell, his buddy. They made a beat together, and Drew.
Andy Samberg
Did a lot of beats on. On. On the Bash Brothers. Just to give some context, we worked with Drew a lot on different things as well.
Akiva Schaffer
Well, and what's cool about this beat I remember is that we had asked him months, if not even a year earlier. There was some beat we loved. I'm not going to remember the song that was very synth. He and 808 heavy. And we said, can you make things that sound like this that are just this vibe? And they made us a few. Drew Campbell did right away. I'm not sure how much ace it was in on that part of it. And one later became Throw it on the Ground. One became Mother Lover. And did a third get used? It's so crazy. Usually people give us 50 beats and maybe one becomes a song at best. This was us requesting something specific. They gave us three beats and minimum two became Throw it on the Ground in Mother Lover.
Andy Samberg
That's how good they are.
Jorma Taccone
Really. It was from that session was Throw it on the Ground.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
And what is the instruction you give him? Keev to get that Mother Lover beat.
Andy Samberg
We keep saying, hey, make it more dope like that, but this.
Akiva Schaffer
So this beat existed before we came up with the idea of Mother Lover. We then went and looked through beats that we liked in the past, dug it up, and went, ooh, it could be to that it was not bespoke made for Mother Lover. Like, Dick in a Box was bespoke made for the idea. But that's why this one doesn't actually. The beat itself is not 90s new.
Jorma Taccone
Jack r B at all, which I'm so glad of, because it. It makes it immediately feel a little more urgent and different.
Andy Samberg
It's also so much faster that you can cram way more jokes. Like this, like, has so many more jokes. Is this, like. I wouldn't say this is twice as fast as Dick in a Box, but it's very fast.
Seth Meyers
It's so fast. And there's incredible, like, verbal dexterity right out of the gates, which is a delight to listen to.
Jorma Taccone
Asa sent us a voice note about the beat. Do we want to just jump into that?
Seth Meyers
Let's hear it.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, let's hear it, please. You know, the only thing I will say about Mother Lover that I can recall that was a point of annoyance for me, was that right to the point when me and Drew Campbell made the beat, we were trying to make this mashup, like, trance pop album with, like, almost, like, big trap drums and trance. Andy was the only person that had faith in it. We would send him music, and he'd.
Seth Meyers
Be like, oh, I'm fucking with this.
Andy Samberg
Like. And so he was the one that chose Mother Lover, as he has many of our other beats. And I remember after that song kind of went off and went viral, everybody hit me up and was like, oh, why didn't you give me that beat? And da, da. And I was like, I tried. I tried for two years to shop that beat around, and nobody wanted it. And so shout out to Andy, love you, baby boy. Oh, bing bong. This guy has foresight, Dagwood.
Jorma Taccone
That's not what I was remembering either, but I'll take it. Yeah, but it did exist for two.
Akiva Schaffer
Years, and I guess they just sent it over when we asked for synthy beats.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, I'm so curious who asked, like, who said that to him after the fact that he was like, oh, why didn't you? Because I do occasionally feel like when we make a song that once the beat has come out, I'm like, wow, we ruined that beat. Nobody can be on that beat anymore.
Seth Meyers
I just like that it is a cliche of what I really wanted to believe. Happen happens in hip hop where people call around and are like, why are you holding out the big good beats on me? Like, there's like, the Glengarry beats.
Jorma Taccone
My son now says that, like, we'll be playing, like, an Octonaut song that I. Yeah, that, like, is like, tearing my soul out of my mouth. And he'll start dancing and be like, this is a good beat. I'll be like, all right, man. I mean, you got the right rhythm, but the song's bad.
Andy Samberg
Nodding his head like, yeah. Oh, that's great.
Jorma Taccone
Right? This goes.
Andy Samberg
This slaps.
Seth Meyers
That's who passed on Asus. The Octonauts passed on Mother Lover.
Andy Samberg
Wow, that's great.
Akiva Schaffer
Guys, I have to bail.
Andy Samberg
Okay, okay, okay.
Jorma Taccone
Later, buddy. Love you.
Seth Meyers
Love you.
Andy Samberg
Love you.
Akiva Schaffer

Seth Meyers
Hey, everybody. Keev had to bail 4th of July. And again, our families weren't that excited that we were doing it today.
Andy Samberg
Hate this.
Seth Meyers
In fact, I think they were real mad. So here's the thing, Andy. It starts with five months later.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
And you guys are walking out of prison.
Jorma Taccone
Getting out of jail.
Seth Meyers
You're getting out of jail. And when you're getting out of jail, did you get permission to shoot on the steps of this police station?
Jorma Taccone
Oh, man. Yoram, do you remember this is.
Andy Samberg
We did. Yes, we did. It's at Brooklyn Detention center, kind of near the Brooklyn Nine Nine Precinct. That is actually like based on that. Dan told me. Dan Gore told me that it was apparently based on. And we did get permission. It was just like you guys coming in. Here's the thing. When Justin Timberlake's with you, it's a little easier to get permission.
Seth Meyers
All right, so another thing I like. You guys come down the steps, you're carrying your boxes. And I think most people maybe forget that you got arrested at the end of dick in a box.
Andy Samberg
Oh, too many people.
Jorma Taccone
It's important that we do. But. Yeah, you do. Maybe push it from your mind.
Seth Meyers
I like that both of you, though, are pointing the holes out on the boxes.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, yeah. So you can see.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, it's a fun reminder that you guys put your dicks in them and.
Andy Samberg
They'Re average size holes, like, you know. Yeah, good size holes.
Jorma Taccone
In case anyone forgot, like that Was the premise.
Seth Meyers
Should we do a rewatch as we do this one?
Andy Samberg
I think we should.
Jorma Taccone
We can. I mean, I kind of want to talk about the writing part, because I just want to.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, let's do that first. Great. Yeah, keep going.
Jorma Taccone
I just remember it being one of the most creatively fulfilling experiences, personally, that I've ever had working on something.
Andy Samberg
Oh, do tell.
Jorma Taccone
Like, I feel like we were on fire during it.
Andy Samberg
It felt very flowy.
Jorma Taccone
Yes. It felt like it was coming really easily. The beat we really loved. Justin was in the room with us as we were writing, and he and I were doing a lot of, like, there's no other word for it.
Andy Samberg
Yorm.
Jorma Taccone
Riffing. Musical riffing.
Andy Samberg
Riffing. And, like, looking at each other and things that sort of became. Became moments in the video to me. Like, there's definitely, like, moments of you guys looking at each other. There's a lot of looking in each other's faces in these videos.
Jorma Taccone
Yes. Yes. I mean, these dudes are close.
Andy Samberg
They're close.
Jorma Taccone
Extremely close.
Andy Samberg
Well, they have very similar ideas.
Seth Meyers
That's so funny. Yeah. Like, I guess we kind of think they just want to bone each other's moms, But a lot of it comes from their own intense closeness.
Jorma Taccone
They're very. I mean, we learn more about that in.
Andy Samberg
You can just picture them at sleepovers.
Jorma Taccone
There's something also about them, and I think it's probably because the music was popular when we were in junior high, but, like, the, like, youngness of we're gonna wear matching outfits and have choreographed dances, and we're gonna know all the moves and do them at the same time and look into each other's eyes and then turn away at the same time, and da, da. You know, and, like, we were riding that kind of energy for it. And I remember being like, oh, this is just fun. Like, regardless of how it ends up, it's super fun to do. And I remember having a lot of ideas for it musically and lyrically. That happened very quickly, and it was just a good time.
Andy Samberg
And I remember being shocked at how much time we had with Justin. Like, you don't usually have that much time with the host. And any moment that he got to not be on set having to rehearse, he was, like, with us, which was really, really funny.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. I mean, he wrote a bunch of the lyrics in Mother lover.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, gang.
Jorma Taccone
Like, I want to say, I'm gonna make your mama do a million poses. Digital camera line was just 100% his pitch. I think I'm gonna be the syrup. She could Be my waffle was his line. Possibly.
Andy Samberg
Yeah. Hit a bunch.
Jorma Taccone
And then, you know, just all throughout it, the back and forthiness of it, we were just vibing. It was super fun.
Seth Meyers
I like that he appreciated how important it was to, if not outdo, at least be in the same zip code as the first one. That it would suck for everybody involved if it was bad.
Jorma Taccone
Yes. And I also will say, I believe this was one of many times that we asked Asa and Drew to add a breakdown after the fact, and they gave us that beautiful, like, synthy, like, Alphaville sounding breakdown that turns into. It would be my honor that sex.
Andy Samberg
It's kind of weird for how much I love this one and for how many jokes I feel like land and how many jokes I like. And both visual and, like, just written jokes for this that none of us voted for this one. When you did the 64, like, March Madness thing, like, none of you three did.
Jorma Taccone
I think I did.
Andy Samberg
All three of us voted for Iran so far over this one. But pound for pound, this was a pretty good.
Jorma Taccone
Did we. I thought maybe I voted for motherhood.
Andy Samberg
No, we all three.
Jorma Taccone
You remember that I didn't.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jorma Taccone
That's crazy that you remember what I voted for and I don't.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
It's just that I was happy that we were a team. You know what I mean?
Seth Meyers
Well, I've said that. I think one of the reasons it won over Iran so far is that every comedy writer in the room appreciates how hard it is to outdo a hit.
Jorma Taccone
Sure.
Seth Meyers
Like everybody at snl. Every writer at SNL who had a thing that they then wrote the second version of, they know that, like. Oh, yeah. Because I don't even think about Tick in a Box when I'm watching Mother Lover. Like, there's nothing established other than, like, the. The first shot of the boxes.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
Where a joke in the first one is repeated in the second one, which is.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. It was also just super exciting now, like, everyone's attention was on it production wise. Like, everyone did a great job on the first one, but all of a sudden we were like, hey, let's get outfits for the second one, you know? And like, you can see as soon as the video starts, we had so many fucking dope outfits. Yeah. And got like actual matching stuff. And there's just like more layers to every setup. I mean, we'll get to that.
Andy Samberg
I guess just when off the jump, your digital that you guys have are just so dope.
Jorma Taccone
I love those watches and the roast beef sandwiches.
Seth Meyers
I mean, again, the sandwiches. When a sandwich shows up in one of your pieces of work, Andy, for me, it's like when Stan Lee shows up in a Marvel movie. I'm like, there it is.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, he's the real Joey of the group.
Seth Meyers
You know, also, the sandwiches are so. It's like they literally look the way you would want them to look if you had comedy sandwiches. Because you guys are. They're just the floppy ham.
Andy Samberg
You guys are wagging around pretty hard.
Jorma Taccone
It's roast beef. I hate to correct a dear friend.
Seth Meyers
No. Yeah, but they're. You're floppy roast beef.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
And it. Like, you're gesturing with it, and just the right amount is coming off every time you gesture.
Jorma Taccone
Little stringy, little floppy. And we knew. I mean, I can't remember who pitched that. I don't know if it was you or kid.
Andy Samberg
I can't remember that.
Jorma Taccone
But that setup, we were like. That setup is going to be a lot of, like, shakiness motions. And it immediately was making us giggle before we even shot it.
Andy Samberg
I remember thinking that I was surprised this was working as well as it was.
Seth Meyers
It was good.
Jorma Taccone
Stringy roast beef.
Seth Meyers
Because sometimes, if you want. If you say, I want a sandwich that falls apart, they, like, make it like they make a bad sandwich. Like, this looked like a sandwich you could eat.
Andy Samberg
Oh, this is a real sandwich.
Seth Meyers
It just looked exactly the way a sandwich. If you just were waving a sandwich around too much, like, it would just very slowly fall apart.
Jorma Taccone
I think there's a decent. We took bites of those sandwiches at some point.
Andy Samberg
Also, fun fact, Andy is still young. Sandwich in my phone. When I call him, that's what pops up.
Jorma Taccone
So if you hack Yorm, that's how to get in touch with me.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, we'll just be that part.
Jorma Taccone
It's fine. If someone can figure out how to hack you to four knocks of people. Put that out there, Yorm. No one could. You think someone can. What, like, trick you into being confused about something enough to hack your phone? No, dude.
Seth Meyers
Once a week, someone in Brooklyn walks up to Yorm and says, hey, can I use your phone real quick to call my mom? And then he hands it to them and they just run away.
Jorma Taccone
It's not, hey, I work at Barclays Center. Can I hold your phone?
Andy Samberg
Should we. Should we watch this? Should we. Should we step through?
Seth Meyers
Yeah. Who wants to be in charge of this? Stopping and starting.
Jorma Taccone
It can't be me. And you guys know why.
Andy Samberg
Know how to do it.
Seth Meyers
All right, I can do it. All right. Ready, guys?
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
Well, let's Check it out.
Seth Meyers
Five months later. I want to note. You'll hear right away. Audience thrilled to see you guys.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, dudes that look like that in real life don't get that reaction coming out of jail.
Andy Samberg
Justin's. I love the old timey trash can. Oscar, the garage.
Jorma Taccone
All right, should we stop?
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
I mean, dude, that watch.
Jorma Taccone
That's the watch. Yeah.
Andy Samberg
It like, matches the color of your outfit.
Jorma Taccone
It matches the outfit. The watch matches the outfit.
Seth Meyers
It's a. It's a watch, you know, that has a full calculator keyboard on it. It looks like.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
Seth, do you want to go back and look at the size of the holes? That was something y was interested in.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. You guys definitely did yourselves a solid with the size of the holes.
Jorma Taccone
Hey, you don't know.
Andy Samberg
It's implying that you don't put the balls through.
Seth Meyers
I think those boxes were rattling around.
Jorma Taccone
Fair. If it was Yorm and I was guessing, I would be know if it was accurate as discussed. Yeah, but you, Seth. I know. Don't know.
Seth Meyers
I don't know. All right, so the watch is really beautiful. My God, it's so funny.
Andy Samberg
It's great.
Jorma Taccone
God damn it. That Casio. Casio, the illuminator.
Seth Meyers
Now, of course, I do have a question here. Your watch goes off. You set an alarm for 118 in the afternoon on Mother's Day.
Jorma Taccone
That's right.
Andy Samberg
That's when I get up, so.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, I'm pretty sure 118 is when that watch was broken and frozen, so.
Seth Meyers
So an alarm goes off that reminds you that it's Mother's Day, but also that it's too late to buy a present. So you set an alarm too late to be able to do anything about it.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, it might be 1:18am that makes complete sense.
Andy Samberg
Really soon it all tracks.
Seth Meyers
I also want to note that you. I'm going to play it from this moment of the watch going on, you realize it's Mother's Day and you haven't bought anything. And Justin is sort of has empathy for you. And then like about two thirds through it, he then realizes the same has happened for him. He doesn't right away.
Jorma Taccone
He also forgot. Yeah.
Andy Samberg
Flawless character, logic, all this.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, dang.
Seth Meyers
What is a dog?
Jorma Taccone
I forgot his Mother's Day didn't get.
Seth Meyers
A gift for her.
Jorma Taccone
Other plans got in the way. She'll be so disappointed.
Andy Samberg
Damn. I forgot it too.
Jorma Taccone
This could have been avoided. What the hell are we going to do?
Andy Samberg
The plans that got in the way were that they were in jail.
Seth Meyers
For they got arrested.
Jorma Taccone
Other plans got in the way. They were in jail.
Seth Meyers
They got arrested for putting their dicks in boxes.
Jorma Taccone
And so we have the first of many. Both looking at the camera lens at the exact same time on what the.
Seth Meyers
Hell are we going to do? So you're really aware that it cameras here.
Jorma Taccone
And then this is just beautiful. I'm going to say Keev editing here of just like hard cut to them working out in the gym in bright neon outfits as the drums drop in and that beat, obviously, and.
Seth Meyers
And he's holding your feet, you're doing sit ups and you're explaining the situation.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
And we hear really why both of your mothers are maybe in need of a lover. Well, we'll hear. We'll let you guys explain it.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. Also working out in full, like windbreaker.
Seth Meyers
And you're wearing like, what do you call those? Stonewash jeans.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But with the sleeveless hood, which I. I forgot was a part of this. But does track.
Andy Samberg
Is he wearing those, like, skateboard pants.
Seth Meyers
The Zumbas, or do you say cold Andy?
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Patty Clarkson, Susan Sarande in the bedroom ever since he passed away. Yeah. Okay, so Timberlake's daddy left his mom.
Andy Samberg
That's cold. Yeah, yeah.
Jorma Taccone
My mom can't be satisfied by my dad in the bedroom ever since he passed away.
Seth Meyers
When you say he passed away, you then make the international gesture for going to bed, right?
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, he's passed.
Seth Meyers
You definitely do.
Andy Samberg
Like, he went to sleep.
Jorma Taccone
He says, like, rock a bye, baby.
Seth Meyers
Cold. I really love cold.
Andy Samberg
Cold is good.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, yeah. He left her cold. Cold.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. And then we see this is the audience revealing who will be playing your mothers in this. And it is Patty Clarkson and Susan Sarandon. And how did that come to pass?
Jorma Taccone
I think it was like we asked talent who was around that would be super exciting. And they said both those names. We were also like, who should look like they could be Mai and Justin's mom.
Andy Samberg
Did Patty live in the. Was she just in the. Cause Susan obviously is the city.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. She strikes me as New York City. They both are.
Jorma Taccone
I think they're both New York. They were certainly at that time.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
And we were like, yeah. I mean, it's like how we always were with everything. We're like, sure. And then, you know, it's Justin. So everyone's just like, sure.
Seth Meyers
Right.
Andy Samberg
Oh, my God. They were both so great to work with too. They were just so awesome.
Jorma Taccone
They're both so great. And they were both so much fun and such great hangs. And they look Amazing. And they were hilarious in it.
Seth Meyers
Their outfits are great.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, they're pretty sexy ladies.
Seth Meyers
They're having a lot of fun.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
Also, Patty's really having fun being, like, sexy in some real, like, mom out there outfits.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. She's, like, pretending to be dowdy. She's in the park.
Seth Meyers
I'd like to know. We're 52 seconds in, and I'm pretty sure the reveal is just a minute. Like, it's crazy how fast you guys lay out the premise of this, and I do think it speaks to what Jorm was saying. Like, it moves so fast. You're getting a lot of details in, by the way.
Jorma Taccone
So 52 seconds in, but not of the song. There's a whole bunch of preamble. Yeah, preamble. Yeah. So that.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, that's a great point.
Jorma Taccone
Where. Where does the music even start there? I think that we maybe get to it in, like, 30 seconds.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. Your watch goes off at 21 seconds, so we're. We're one seconds in at this point.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. This is efficient.
Seth Meyers
And we have decided that you guys forgot Mother's Day. One of your dads left, and another dad is dead, and neither of your moms are satisfied sexually.
Jorma Taccone
Yes.
Seth Meyers
Yes. That's in 30 seconds.
Andy Samberg
It's a lot of backstory, and we're.
Jorma Taccone
Already into, like, our fourth or fifth location or setup.
Andy Samberg
And this. This next outfit is great.
Seth Meyers
Like, it's just.
Andy Samberg
There's metallic. It looks like it's made of rayon, which, by the way, was a big thing for us growing up junior high. You guys bought. Both have tiny, thin, little chains as well, which was also what we were in junior high.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
Which I think Justin related to as well.
Seth Meyers
How would you describe this kind of shirt? Like, what is this?
Jorma Taccone
It's like a rayon button up.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
It's like acetate or rayon.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
But what is the pattern? Like, what do you even call that? Just of the era.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, it's like Paisley Adjacent or something. Yeah.
Andy Samberg
Like, color me Bad would wear it.
Jorma Taccone
It's just early 90s. Yeah.
Seth Meyers
I want to say both of you guys. Both of the dick in the box guys are idiots.
Jorma Taccone
Right?
Seth Meyers
With that said, you're very clearly the dumb one, Andy.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, for sure.
Seth Meyers
Like, you guys are. You guys are both so dumb, and you are clearly the dumb one.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, yeah. They're like, brainy. Go bye bye on my guy.
Seth Meyers
The freeze frame we have right now, Kev, if you could just pop on your phone just a photo so we can put in the show notes of the moment. Like, this is A dumb guy having it. This is a dumb guy thinking he has a good idea.
Jorma Taccone
Exactly.
Andy Samberg
This is totally Blizzard man. Like, just jaw on the floor or.
Jorma Taccone
We love that. We love that move. Like Dodo. So confident.
Andy Samberg
Just mouth breather.
Jorma Taccone
Like I'm about to blow your mind.
Seth Meyers
All right, so now this is. You guys have your sandwiches, and you're basically coming to the conclusion about how you're going to fix Mother's Day.
Jorma Taccone
Yes.
Seth Meyers
And the fact that you don't have gifts. Here we go.
Jorma Taccone
Roast beef flopping. When the times are done, it's time for us to. Justin swirls his roast beef on the top of the sandwich. All right, so we're formulating the plan there. And I. I mean, this is not important to anyone but me, but I don't remember if we were like, pull the roast beef out so it flails around a lot or if it just started happening.
Andy Samberg
I think we did a little. A tiny bit, but it was also.
Jorma Taccone
I think it was a little column A, column B on that.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
But certainly nobody was allowed to tuck the beef boat back in.
Jorma Taccone
No, for sure. I mean, yeah. Once you get that beef swirl.
Andy Samberg
But I will say. I will say for a shot.
Seth Meyers
Reverse shot.
Andy Samberg
Two guys sitting by a little fountain. That is way more entertaining than it should be. Like. Like, there's nothing happening, really, with the shots. And you're like, this is great. I really like these guys.
Seth Meyers
And again, like, he's such a good dancer that it does look like long practice choreography, what he's doing with the sandwich and the roast beef.
Jorma Taccone
Yes.
Andy Samberg
Little twirl.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. It's like watching like a. A whatever. Like a baton major or whatever you call those people.
Andy Samberg
Well, it's time for a switcheroo. You know, he's got.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, so now we know switcheroo. But I still don't think the audience knows what this means, this switcheroo. Except you did. So what do you say? Break it off. What do you say?
Jorma Taccone
I say we break them off. Show them how much they really mean.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, yeah. But I don't know if a lot of the audience knew what break them off meant.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, certainly. I think. Again.
Andy Samberg
You think. So you think a lot of SNL audience was like, ah, yeah, I. I.
Seth Meyers
Think that they're ready to go this next point. So again, you know, the music's triumphant. You guys are out by the bridge and just. Here we go.
Jorma Taccone
Okay.
Seth Meyers
All right.
Jorma Taccone
So Cleen could have easily just gotten out there. But then we reveal. It's a double chorus.
Seth Meyers
It is a double check. I actually Forgot I stopped thinking. The chorus is over. But it is a double chorus.
Jorma Taccone
You can easily go fuck each other's moms and then go right into the next verse. But no.
Seth Meyers
So should we hear the rest of the chorus?
Andy Samberg
Well, I think. I think this is a. I think this is a good moment to just mention that, like, I'll push in that lady where you came out as a baby, I think was the moment that my mom was like, I really dislike this song. This is one of the ones that she hated the most, which I was a little surprised by.
Jorma Taccone
Mother Lover is one of our songs that has. Has a lot of stuff that I would normally say is just inexcusable.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
And is so gross in a way that I don't even really enjoy personally. And yet, for some reason, in this context, musically the way it is, and because it's these guys, I do like it.
Seth Meyers
It's that.
Andy Samberg
It's that they're so dumb. It's that they're so beyond dumb that you're like, it's fine, it's fine.
Seth Meyers
I think it really helps that it's also like, Patty and Susan.
Jorma Taccone
Right.
Seth Meyers
I like that it's them and not, like, cast members of our age.
Jorma Taccone
Right. You know, like Fred and you.
Seth Meyers
Right? Yeah. I don't think anybody likes that. I also want to. I think for everybody listening who might worry that slang has changed. I don't think anybody. Forget the baby half of that couplet ever said, like, I'm gonna push in that lady.
Andy Samberg
Right.
Jorma Taccone
I don't know about that. I don't know about that.
Andy Samberg
Push in la. No, that's like, push my seed in her bush, like, level graphic.
Jorma Taccone
That's right. Yeah.
Andy Samberg
Cody Chestnut style.
Jorma Taccone
Cody Chestnut. And then obviously did it again with the Roots, you know, and that one actually, I think had more commercial success. What's up, Amir?
Seth Meyers
Oh, while we're talking about Amir, because we know he's a listener, you want to ask Quaid what he's cooking?
Jorma Taccone
Oh, Quaid, what do you got on that stove top right now?
Andy Samberg
Let's see what the Quaid is cooking.
Jorma Taccone
Quaid O. You making Alphabets, dude?
Seth Meyers
Hey, in the, like, I can't believe what a article decided to pull out of the last episode. Somebody wrote a headline of. Of, like, Great Balls of Fire was Jack Quaid's, like, the soundtrack of his growing up.
Jorma Taccone
You know, any promo for the pod is just a blessing.
Seth Meyers
It's just a blessing. But somebody. Somebody sent me a screen on, like, social media. They sent me a screenshot, and they said I was so excited to share this with the pod, not realizing that it came from the pod. Like, they saw a headline and they were like, oh, my God, Lonely island guys are going to love to hear this.
Andy Samberg
That's really funny.
Seth Meyers
All right, so second half of the first chorus.
Jorma Taccone
Yes. Okay.
Seth Meyers
Another edit I love is when you put your fingers up and it cuts to you on the roast beef spot and your fingers are up as well.
Andy Samberg
That is good.
Seth Meyers
I love that it matches the choreography in a different shot.
Jorma Taccone
I was going to say, I think every Mother's Day needs a Mother's night is one of the first things I wrote down for this premise.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
Beautiful.
Seth Meyers
It's very good. It's very, very good.
Andy Samberg
Thanks, Seth. The. The cutaways in the chorus of the Moms, I remember feeling were always a little subpar because we kind of rush through them. So just the fact that Patty's, like, leaning against a trash can looking sexy, it's like a. It's a bit. Bit rushed.
Jorma Taccone
Funny, though I would argue everyone would have guessed we did that on purpose.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
Well, now we know, because it is funny, don't you?
Andy Samberg
I mean, we did. We did do it on purpose. It was just like, sit over here. Smell this flower.
Seth Meyers
I do. And again, that moment where Susan Sarandon walks by and you guys are standing in sort of a alcove.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
Because you're showing her off to Justin.
Jorma Taccone
Yes. Yes. And it's. It's very. I mean, I wouldn't dare to. To actually really say this, but it's, you know, New York 90s, like, do the right thing vibes almost.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
Like, yo, check her.
Andy Samberg
Yes, please.
Jorma Taccone
I mean, let's be more fair. It's probably more like house party.
Seth Meyers
Ye.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
It's also definitely weird that she doesn't see the two of you in the alcove.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, well, it's magical realism.
Seth Meyers
Oh, that's it. Good. Good to know. Yeah, that's like the size of those holes in the box.
Jorma Taccone
That's magical realism.
Andy Samberg
Per.
Jorma Taccone
What. What are you even basing that on?
Seth Meyers
All right, now we see Patty. Patty in bed looking forlorn, as we've established.
Andy Samberg
Beautiful silk, negligible.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, forlorn. The AI might transcribe that as the. She's looking for Lorne Michael.
Seth Meyers
She's looking for Lorne Michael. Well, I ass. Assumed in this Lauren was your dad who left her.
Jorma Taccone
Well, you added like, a hiccup in the word. I'm just saying.
Seth Meyers
I did. I did.
Jorma Taccone
People are groaning before the punchline even comes.
Seth Meyers
Well, you do hold up, Lube.
Jorma Taccone
And roses, But I haven't said it yet. They start going, ah, I know, but.
Seth Meyers
They start going, yeah.
Andy Samberg
There's so much looking into the camera, impressing the audience with, like, look at this lube. Look at these roses.
Jorma Taccone
We're bringing back Kevin Yoram's fake magazine that they would try to get.
Andy Samberg
Oh, in the cut.
Jorma Taccone
Records were up in the cut. I believe in the cut.
Seth Meyers
And then it is funny, just a digital camera as good as the watch. I would say that digital camera people are really into it right now. And it keeps getting better.
Jorma Taccone
Y we are so cool and thoughtful is 100%.
Seth Meyers
Wait, what is we are so cool?
Jorma Taccone
There's two lines that I know for 100% in the song are y one is we are so cool and thoughtful. The other one is give it to my mom style.
Seth Meyers
Well, I'm really excited to get to that line because there's a weird shift when that line happens because you guys first start singing what you're going to do to the other one's mom. Then you, all of a sudden you're telling him what to do with your mom.
Jorma Taccone
What to do.
Seth Meyers
Which is so much worse.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, it's much worse.
Seth Meyers
Like, the first one is terrible.
Jorma Taccone
Yes.
Seth Meyers
But it's like 10x worse that now you're given him knows.
Jorma Taccone
Yes. Y loves like a Anya Harry butt.
Andy Samberg
I like it right to the point. Right to the right to the point.
Jorma Taccone
What if it was, like, really pristine all the way through and then you just off this end part. That's a good y move and it truly does work.
Andy Samberg
Here's the thing. It's also similar to our don't give a honk slash punch you in the jeans guys in that it's dumb guys agreeing with each other, which I always like as a move of being like, that's a great idea.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, they're not. Nobody has any. It's like you're testing each other's limits.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, exactly.
Jorma Taccone
Misguided camaraderie.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. I don't know if it's misguided. I think these guys. I think they need each other, and I'm really happy they're friends.
Jorma Taccone
Well, the outsider might find it misguided was what I meant.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, right, right.
Jorma Taccone
They think they're steering each other.
Seth Meyers
Right. All right, here we. I forgot the other thing is that the setup to doggy style is chamomile.
Jorma Taccone
Chamomile. Yeah.
Seth Meyers
So basically, like, Justin's saying, here's what my mom's into. Bubble baths. Chamomile.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
And then you're just like my, my mom's filthy.
Jorma Taccone
Well, no, I just. What I want him to do for her.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, it's a gift. It's a Mother's Day gift.
Jorma Taccone
That's what she needs.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, but it. Chamomile really, like almost. It's a. It's a wonderful sleight of hand that you don't think something that graphic is coming.
Jorma Taccone
It sounds like we're setting up a very specific triple syllable rhyme.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. And it's just that you're going to. You're going to make. You're going to make doggy. 11 syllable.
Jorma Taccone
Also the shock that was chosen for me doing that line. I'm like way too close to the camera, kind of falling out of focus. It's got. It's very frenetic.
Seth Meyers
I'm going to watch again. You're right.
Jorma Taccone
Give it to my mom. Justin. Not moving at all. Like just a fucking statue locked in. That's another good shot.
Seth Meyers
Well, now we're sort of seeing you each in the world where the other one is about to have sex with your mom. So presumably Susan's got. Right. Susan's got her arms wrapped around Justin in the kitchen. She's wearing some oven mitts. You come up, take stock of this moment and then just give a real, like, nod. Like, this could not be going better. Yeah, I just like that.
Andy Samberg
It looks like Andy's just going to get a snack in his own.
Jorma Taccone
That's what I was going to say. I think I'm coming in for a cup or something.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
Can we run that back, Seth?
Seth Meyers
Yeah, let's run it back.
Andy Samberg
And he's going in for like a Sunny D or something.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
He'S going to grab a frog or something. Sunny D. It does seem like definitely.
Jorma Taccone
Going in to get Sunny D out of a drawer fridge.
Seth Meyers
And you way, way too late in the process realize that your best friend and your mom are sitting on the counter right in front of you like.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, I like this.
Seth Meyers

Andy Samberg
Uh oh. Love this one. Support comes from. How did this get made? One of my favorite other pods. Do you love movies that are so bad they're good? We're not talking about the room here, guys. That's just good. Good. I'm talking about movies where Jason Statham saves the day or a lifetime thriller about a killer fight Instructor. Or basically any 80s movie set in the near future. Please don't say that they covered rad on this podcast because it's one of the best movies ever made. So if then you answered yes to the above, you'll love. How did this get made? Comedians. Paul Scheer. Love him. June Diane Raphael. Killer. This is Killer Squad so far and Jason Mantzoukas unpacked the very best of the worst films ever made. Did they do Deathbed Yet? The Patton Oswald joke? I don't know. I haven't listened that episode. They recently covered big budget superhero flops, Craven and Hunter and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I also hope that they didn't cover Land of the Lost, which I'm in and received a Razzie nomination for. Sometimes the podcast even has hilarious guests like Bobby Moynihan, Casey Wilson, who also has another podcast you should check out Seth Rogen and Adam Scott. So what are you waiting for? Tune in to how did this get made?

Andy Samberg
Makes sense out of movies that don't.
Seth Meyers
We're coming up on what I like to call I can't decide if it's Is it Laser Cats? Is it Andy's Corona ad? But it is definitely two people in chairs at the beach.
Andy Samberg
Oh God. This might be the. Is it the same painted backdrop that we use for Laser Cats?
Jorma Taccone
No, this was new for this.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
Or was this green screen? Was this full green screen?
Jorma Taccone
No, this was a backdrop.
Andy Samberg
It was a backdrop, right?
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
This is a backdrop. Yeah. It seems pretty and painted.
Jorma Taccone
Yep. And we shot it on the. What is now your stage, Seth. It was the Fallon stage.
Seth Meyers
Oh, really? Shot it over he.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. And also the doggy style shot was there. If you look at the background, I think it's kind of like smoked out on that stage.
Seth Meyers
I love it. Look at that. Another piece of history in old studio. He yes, bruv.
Andy Samberg
You guys look great.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, man. The choreography now is.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, you guys are miming pregnant, making.
Jorma Taccone
The shape of a pregnant belly.
Andy Samberg
If you were confused at all.
Jorma Taccone
So vile.
Seth Meyers
Only one shot. I can tell. There's two shots I love in this Andy. Because we only see him once. You with Patty on a tandem bike.
Jorma Taccone
We go back to it maybe in the breakdown. Twice. I think we hit it twice. But yes, we shot the whole song on that tandem bike and then only used it. And I remember laughing in edit about how little we had used it.
Seth Meyers
But it's really. I mean, it's fun to know that that meant that you put Patty in the back of a tandem bicycle and you were physically biking her around. Were you on a. You must have been on a flatbed.
Jorma Taccone
I want to say process trailer.
Andy Samberg
Okay, can we see it? I thought we actually did it, but.
Jorma Taccone
Maybe we did it.
Seth Meyers
You think you actually bites with her?
Jorma Taccone
I don't think we did.
Andy Samberg
Well, can we. Can we see?
Jorma Taccone
I think it was a process trailer.
Seth Meyers
All right, hold on. I'm going to play it again.
Andy Samberg
I feel like you and I did that while Q was editing.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, Break it down.
Andy Samberg
Definitely process.
Jorma Taccone
Is that the only time we use it is break it down?
Seth Meyers
Oh, my God. I think maybe.
Jorma Taccone
Maybe that's the guy.
Seth Meyers
Also, look at how good an actor Patty Clarkson is.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, she's just loving it.
Andy Samberg
Just enjoying the day.
Seth Meyers
You're talking to the camera, and she is just wearing a bike helmet, looking up at the trees. I also like to think that part of you seducing her is you. You know, I've showed up in a tandem bike, but she's still putting safety first.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, you gotta wear the helmet.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, because you're not wearing a helmet. But she's like, I'm gonna wear a helmet.
Jorma Taccone
She decided that her character was, like, on the straight and narrow. She was like a. How do you. I mean, like a suburban.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, she was a good mom.
Seth Meyers
She's just like, a regular, but totally into it. Like, there's no doubt on her.
Jorma Taccone
Like, a little country club. I think she even said she's, like, a little cool country club.
Andy Samberg
I also like that you are not dressed for biking on this one. Like, for the gym, you dress up. But for this one, you're wearing, like, a full suit.
Jorma Taccone
This dude does not sacrifice style for comfort, ever.
Seth Meyers
Although there's one coming up that's my second, I think, only one shot where it's maybe my favorite outfit you wear in the whole thing.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, okay.
Seth Meyers
Which is on the tennis courts.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, well, yes.
Seth Meyers
All right, so here we go. Now we're going to break it down. So this is the. Break it down.
Jorma Taccone
Break it down. It would be my honor to be your. Your new stepfather.
Seth Meyers
It would be my honor to be your new stepfather.
Jorma Taccone
Patty's skipping.
Andy Samberg
Yeah. This is another great cutaway.
Seth Meyers
I'm just going to take a second here. Halfway through that. That's Pinnacle Timberlake, his delivery of that line.
Andy Samberg
It would be my father.
Seth Meyers
It's just. It never. It is joyful noise to me every time I hear it.
Andy Samberg
Yeah, yeah.
Jorma Taccone
It's also. He's so good at singing. We just said the same line twice.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, right.
Jorma Taccone
You know what I mean? You're like, oh, now I like is.
Andy Samberg
Very much him, though. Like, right. Like, I feel like when I hear that, I'm like, only Justin.
Seth Meyers
That's what I mean. Like, there's no right. No imitators. It is just the most Justin line. And it's so funny and yet at the same time, deeply beautiful. And then these next two lines. This might be my favorite couplet of the entire Mother lover.
Jorma Taccone
It's so dark. I'll never use a rubber.
Andy Samberg
Like, those are filthy lines.
Jorma Taccone
Filthy. But also, we got jam in there, which is, like, from the jump with Justin. We were like, teddy's jam. That whole thing. Jam.
Andy Samberg
Oh, jam. Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
He's like, I'm getting the word jam into this song, and we found the right spot for it.
Seth Meyers
When did he. Did he say it at the end of it? Is that when he says it?
Jorma Taccone
It's in the middle. Oh, it's right in the middle of the run that I'm doing.
Andy Samberg
Right in the middle. Yeah.
Seth Meyers
All right. Hold on me.
Jorma Taccone
He goes, jam.
Andy Samberg
Jam.
Jorma Taccone
Just a lot happening.
Seth Meyers
Explain Jam.
Jorma Taccone
I mean, it was a moment. It's like New Jack swing moment. There were multiple songs where jam was said a lot, is my recollection.
Andy Samberg
I feel like it was only, like, about a year or two, you know, so it was a little bit of a blip. But it was a great blip.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. I mean, the band guy had a song called Teddy's Jam.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
Which is the main reference. And then I think probably there's a bunch more New Jack swing songs with jam in it.
Seth Meyers
So again, I would have said, I've watched this a hundred times, and only today did I realize that Justin's on a picnic with Susan Sarandon. You've got, like, the nicest picnic basket behind you.
Andy Samberg
What are they reading, too?
Seth Meyers
What is that they're reading? Go Looking Deep, Terry Bradshaw's autobiography.
Jorma Taccone
I've never noticed that.
Seth Meyers
Literally, I've never noticed it for our listeners.
Jorma Taccone
I've never known at all that they were reading Terry Bradshaw's book.
Seth Meyers
Looking Deep. By Terry Brown. Again, if listeners don't know, nobody loves the Steelers more than me. It's like you did it as a gift to me that I only realized, fucking hell.
Andy Samberg
Well, you know what's nice about this is that there's a lot of foreplay. These guys aren't just, like, hopping in the sheets. They're fucking going on Picnics, reading books out loud to each other.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. It's Mother's Day. It's gotta be, like, meaningful and appreciative, you know? Yeah.
Andy Samberg
Getting it wall warmed up.
Jorma Taccone
Okay. I don't know if you need to say it that way.
Seth Meyers
I also want to say I think Looking Deep is Terry Bradshaw's second book, right after man of Steel.
Jorma Taccone
After man of Steel, Yeah. That's what I was going to guess. That was man of Steel.
Seth Meyers
Terry Bradshaw has written a lot of books, guys.
Jorma Taccone
What's your favorite one? Would you say it's the Bradshaw Family Cookbook?
Seth Meyers
Probably. Keep it simple.
Jorma Taccone
Okay.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
You kept it simple by choosing that.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
Way in. In the comments.
Seth Meyers
I do think the Terry Bradshaw Family Cookbook should. Don't just overlook that.
Jorma Taccone
Do you want to know my favorite?
Seth Meyers
It's only a game.
Jorma Taccone
Wait, no, don't. You got to move that back up.
Andy Samberg
Wait, don't get off the page. So he needs to read the title.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. My favorite. No, Seth, you're covering it now. Obviously. My favorite is New England Tree Fruit Management.
Seth Meyers
I think that's. I think that's a different Terry Bradshaw.
Andy Samberg
Nope, that's him. That's Em.
Seth Meyers
By the way, I forgot I was sharing the screen and I'm like, how's Andy getting all this?
Jorma Taccone
You're telling me that your favorite Terry Bradshaw, the ex quarterback for the Steelers. Is it New England Tree Fruit Management?
Seth Meyers
It'd be so funny.
Jorma Taccone
There's a reason it's out of stock. Seth.
Seth Meyers
It'd be so funny if I then opened New England Tree Fruit Management Guide, which was listed and it was just like, this book's terr. I don't think Tara Bradshaw knows anything.
Jorma Taccone
Zero stars.
Andy Samberg
I'm in New England right now, guys. And I. I perked up the minute and he said it. I was like, yeah, I gotta get that.
Jorma Taccone
Like, I want to manage fruit in New England.
Seth Meyers
All right, here we go.
Andy Samberg
All right. Yeah, keep going.
Jorma Taccone
So, like, while I'm in. Your mother is so disgusting. Like, the phrasing is so vile, and yet everyone. Well, not everyone. Yorm's mom certainly didn't.
Andy Samberg
No, she was.
Jorma Taccone
But, like, we got. We got away with it. I think.
Seth Meyers
I think you did.
Jorma Taccone
Do we still. I don't know.
Seth Meyers
I also think the. I. I think that the end of the song has a lot of mom positivity activity.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
In a way that makes it clear that this is a. I mean, this sounds crazy to say, but I was like, oh, these guys love their moms.
Jorma Taccone
They really do. They truly do.
Andy Samberg
Oh, yeah, I know. We recorded some with you riding the bike.
Seth Meyers
All right, maybe best. I mean, 100 best physical gag.
Jorma Taccone
The picture on the. On the bed stand.
Seth Meyers
The picture.
Jorma Taccone
I agree. It's my favorite thing in the video.
Seth Meyers
So Andy is about to get with Patty. Patty reaches over.
Jorma Taccone
There's a picture of the characters.
Seth Meyers
Yes. There's a picture of her son on the bed stand. She flips it over.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. Like, we don't want this looking tasteful.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, yeah.
Jorma Taccone
Her face. She thinks that's bad.
Andy Samberg
Ooh, you bad.
Seth Meyers
So Andy shakes a little finger at. After she flips over Justin and then he puts it back up. Andy wants Justin to watch. And then Patty does give him a look like, ooh, you bad.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Seth Meyers
But like, but you bad. But you good. And now we're just enjoying. But wait, wait.
Jorma Taccone
I mean, this is why it's. I do wish we had Keev. I feel like maybe the idea for this shot originally was just the first half of it.
Andy Samberg
Yes. I'm pretty sure that that is.
Jorma Taccone
And then on set, it somehow was suggested that I flip it back up and know.
Andy Samberg
I don't.
Jorma Taccone
I don't remember by whom, but I do remember being like, ooh, that's significantly funnier.
Seth Meyers
It's killer.
Andy Samberg
I think that is right. Yeah.
Seth Meyers
Also, it is a real reminder that she is aware he is your friend and also aware that you are eerily close with him to the point that you want to see a picture of him while you're having sex with his mother.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. In many ways, like, we're doing it for each other's moms, but we're also doing it for each other, as stated.
Seth Meyers
Another great outfits here.
Jorma Taccone
This is good stuff.
Andy Samberg
Yeah. This is. You guys are just dressed up. You look great.
Seth Meyers
You guys are wearing like white suits with. You're wearing a black shirt with white polka dots.
Andy Samberg
We're also in a hazed out mist. A lot of atmosphere in this one. Drinking out of a fountain.
Jorma Taccone
Okay. So musically, maybe my favorite moment is when it doubles down and hits. They blessed us both with the gift of life.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
She brought you in this world. So I'm a sex it. Right.
Seth Meyers
I love. This is the second best idea we've ever had.
Jorma Taccone
Well, yeah, that was.
Andy Samberg
I remember us being very happy to put that in of just like we're never going to live up to the first.
Seth Meyers
But even they who have been nothing but white hot enthusiastic this whole song. Even they know it was a better idea to put their dicks in boxes. I think they got arrested stood for. Yeah, they're. They're riding and dying on that being their best idea. So hardcore.
Jorma Taccone
Okay. Right at the end, that is my.
Andy Samberg
This is my favorite dance of all the dick in a box dances.
Jorma Taccone
It's Justin again, dude. Justin was like, there's got to be a new signature dance for this, Mom.
Andy Samberg
It's. It's like a frozen leg up in the air, and then you guys move back and forth.
Jorma Taccone
He's like, it has to be so bad.
Andy Samberg
It's like sort of a robot thing or. I don't even know what to compare it to. It's fucking great.
Seth Meyers
It's really terrible.
Jorma Taccone
He's a funny, funny man. It was just a great idea. So fucking whack.
Andy Samberg
I love that. It's Justin, the man who spent, like, so many, like, thousands of tens of thousands of hours choreographing and fucking doing crazy.
Jorma Taccone
10 of thousands.
Andy Samberg
Well, you know, 10,000 hours. At least. 10,000 hours, guys. Professional master. Master size. But. But to come up with that dance, too, just to have it in his lexicon is very impressive.
Jorma Taccone
What a treat.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
I mean, forgive us. We just basically jocked ourselves for the entirety of that. But I do feel proud of it. And it was so much fun to make and. And, like, cannot tell you the relief we felt when it was.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. And you knew right away, like, to.
Jorma Taccone
Take that big of a swing. We were scared shitless. And it's still one of the moments I felt the happiest at SNL was when this aired and worked.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
You know, more or less.
Seth Meyers
It was immediately iconic. And I remember Patty and Susan, I believe, were both there in the studio to watch it.
Jorma Taccone
Yes.
Seth Meyers
And that was just so cool because I think we all would have been just happy to see him if they hadn't been in this.
Jorma Taccone
That's right.
Seth Meyers
You know, so to have two superstars hanging around and then also having them be a part of this massive win for you guys was really something.
Jorma Taccone
It was super fun.
Andy Samberg
And when they saw it, that was when they learned the premise of what the.
Seth Meyers
Oh, so you hadn't told them you. No, no, no, no, no.
Andy Samberg
Are you kidding?
Seth Meyers
There?
Andy Samberg
No way they would have said yes.
Jorma Taccone
I remember Patty came to the afterparty and was, like, partying, like, smashing martinis. Just a treat.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
I don't remember if Susan did or didn't, but it was very, very fun. Bless their hearts. Thank you again, to them out there in the universe, it was so, so wonderful of them to do that with us.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. I mean, I really. And I'm not just saying it because I saw that Terry Bradshaw's second book was in it. I loved watching it today as much as I loved watching it every time.
Andy Samberg
Major Kim's video.
Seth Meyers
Right, guys? Oh, and we didn't say that. Tennis. There's a shot of you playing tennis. One shot on a tennis court, right? You're in a fantastic tennis outfit of the era and Patty's behind you sort of teaching you to do a forehand.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, defo. We knew where our bread was getting buttered. And that outfit stinks like shit. It's so good.
Andy Samberg
Really, it makes me want to see those guys skiing. Like, I'm sure they have pretty dope skiing outfits.
Jorma Taccone
So obviously I'm hoping there will be some follow ups on this and then Keith can also chime in a little bit.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, we'll let Keev listen to the time we spent without him and then maybe the next time we. We pick it up, he can, you know, because again, I think if this spreads over an episode, I don't think anybody's going to care.
Andy Samberg
He's going to be furious. He's going to be like, no, no. That is inaccurate.
Seth Meyers
Inaccurate.
Jorma Taccone
So, Seth, you like to ask if this is criterion.
Seth Meyers
I do, yeah. I feel like I maybe dropped the ball on that a little bit, but come on, right now. Is this criterion?
Andy Samberg
I mean, this is. This is the one that won.
Jorma Taccone
If this isn't, I don't know what is. I'll say that.
Andy Samberg
Definitely one of our best shorts.
Jorma Taccone
God, we fucking love ourselves. This is so embarrassing.
Seth Meyers
I know.
Jorma Taccone
Like thinking about everything I've said now about positive things about myself and our work, now I feel like I hate myself.
Seth Meyers
Well, hopefully the next one stinks. Hopefully in the next short, you guys did stinks hard. I'm sure it will.
Jorma Taccone
It's a real roller coaster working there.
Seth Meyers
Wait. Oh. Next up is Will Ferrell season finale and my secret cut on air.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, the one that didn't air. That we do kind of like, though.
Seth Meyers
Oh, that's fun.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
And mugless. We're definitely gonna talk about mugless.
Andy Samberg
We get to talk about my deep seated issues.
Jorma Taccone
Do we have time to talk about the episode in general and maybe get into some Seth's Corner?
Seth Meyers
There was only one Seth's Corner. Do you want to sing real quick? Because I went back and watched it and it wasn't my favorite, but it's interesting.
Jorma Taccone
We gotta talk about it.
Andy Samberg
Seth's Corner. He kind of just poo pooed it, but he's gonna talk about what he did that week. Take it away.
Seth Meyers
It was like the Pirates of the Caribbean street performers at Disney World got a new shot, shipment of props, but it was machine guns. And then you cut to, like, sort of a Captain Phillips Sea pirates opening up a box of plastic swords and stuff.
Jorma Taccone
Okay.
Seth Meyers
Yeah. And then there was a lot of talking. There was the. It was the, like, I'm the captain now guy on the phone with FedEx trying to talk about mix up.
Jorma Taccone
Gotcha.
Seth Meyers
And then.
Jorma Taccone
And how did it play, though?
Andy Samberg
Though?
Seth Meyers
Fine. Last sketch of the night. It was not a bad last sketch of the night.
Andy Samberg
Was it. Was it too dark or, like, what did people.
Seth Meyers
It kind of. It was like a lot of premise, and maybe the air came out of it a little bit faster than you wanted.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, Justin wasn't musical guest.
Seth Meyers
He wasn't?
Jorma Taccone
No. Sierra?
Andy Samberg
No.
Seth Meyers
But was he in one of her songs?
Jorma Taccone
Yes. He was on a song with her.
Seth Meyers
Right.
Andy Samberg
Which one?
Jorma Taccone
Love Sex Magic.
Andy Samberg
All right. That was a good one.
Jorma Taccone
Introduced by Jessica Biel.
Seth Meyers
There you go.
Jorma Taccone
So is there anything else that we want to talk about from the episode? Seth? Yeah.
Seth Meyers
What do you got?
Jorma Taccone
There's a Target lady.
Seth Meyers
Yep.
Jorma Taccone
Which is just a treat.
Seth Meyers
And I. I will say that Timberlake was very good at doing the Target lady vibe.
Jorma Taccone
Hi, girlfriend.
Andy Samberg
Hey.
Seth Meyers
So I strained my neck. How'd you do that, girlfriend? I was pushing a washing machine up a hill when my fashion sandal got caught on a decorative yard brick. Is that not just clothes?
Jorma Taccone
Plastic.
Seth Meyers
There was a Barry Gibb. There was a Barry Gibb talk show.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, yeah. I have an opinion.
Seth Meyers
It's important.
Jorma Taccone
I don't know how passes for manners. I'm let faculty come with your frame degrees in your leather elbow patch ass. No, I didn't mean to say. I got a degree from the streets of Melbourne, Australia. So help me God, I have a.
Seth Meyers
Buck knife in my shoe.
Jorma Taccone
I will split you open like a.
Seth Meyers
Soft shell crab and wear your carcass like a raincoat. Wear your carcass like a raincoat. People are very excited, I think, for the entirety of this show.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, it was a hot one. Oh. So a fun little note is Chris Pine, Leonard Nimoy, and Zach Quinto were on Update.
Seth Meyers
Another fun note. I wrote it and have no memory.
Andy Samberg
Gentlemen, I've spent many years of my life among Trekkies. Trekkers.
Seth Meyers
And they have been some of the greatest years of my life. And while it may take some time.
Andy Samberg
I believe that soon they will find you, Chris, to be equal to the.
Seth Meyers
Original Captain Kirk and you, Zach, to be slightly less than equal to the original spot. Oh, what? One of the great, great cuts of all time.
Jorma Taccone
We're talking McDonald's.
Seth Meyers
Michael McDonald's. McDonald's.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, it happened. It got cut. Did it happen twice or. This is the time that we've always been building up to.
Seth Meyers
I think this is. Kev, can you tell us.
Jorma Taccone
I know we've talked about. We've talked about Michael McDonald's and McDonald's on this podcast.
Seth Meyers
I don't know, but I think this might be the first time. Oh, no, this is the second. Second time. But you know that certainly they tried.
Jorma Taccone
It again and it got cut again.
Seth Meyers
It got cut again.
Jorma Taccone
Which is maybe why I have such a thorn in my foot about it.
Andy Samberg
You guys. I have it cuz I asked yon for it so I could play it for you guys if you want to see it.
Seth Meyers
Do you have it right now?
Andy Samberg
I do have it right now.
Seth Meyers
Okay. Share screen and let's just watch it.
Jorma Taccone
Hi, I'm singer songwriter Michael McDonald's. That's right, it's me. You know, what a fool believes is.
Seth Meyers
That you can't find delicious hamburgers for a reasonable price.
Jorma Taccone
But I'm no fool.
Seth Meyers
That's why I opened my own fast food restaurant. Guess what it's called? McDonald's.
Jorma Taccone
The food is fast. The price is so fantastic. But recently it was brought to my.
Seth Meyers
Attention that there's already a fast food restaurant called McDonald's.
Jorma Taccone
In fact, my friends were pretty shocked that I'd never heard of it.
Seth Meyers
But hey, my Last name is McDonald.
Jorma Taccone
So legally I'm in the clear. Or so I thought.
Seth Meyers
The never ending lawsuits.
Jorma Taccone
Please stop pressing charges. I'm currently in the middle of a.
Seth Meyers
Costly court case with the other McDonald's. They're a pretty large corporation and these legal fees are really doing a number on my bank account. On my bank account. That's right. My life is a nightmare.
Jorma Taccone
We also have chicken and gullies. Okay.
Andy Samberg
Oh, man.
Jorma Taccone
Okay, so it has some. Some gullies.
Seth Meyers
It has some gull. It has gullies.
Andy Samberg
It has some gullies. But I remember it so well for.
Seth Meyers
How much I love it. You watch it and you kind of say, yeah, yeah, I get why we didn't do it.
Andy Samberg
I get why we did it.
Jorma Taccone
That being said, watching it again also made me happy all over again. Because I love it so much.
Seth Meyers
I love it so much.
Jorma Taccone
But on a really hot show where everything' no downbeats. You can see how it needed a little bit more work.
Seth Meyers
Well, the problem. And again, you said it needed more work. And it should be noted, it's been like 18 months since they Tried it once, and they definitely didn't write a single new line.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah, yeah, that's fair. That's very fair. Now, who's that? Colin Jost.
Seth Meyers
That's Colin Jost, but Colin Jost, I do remember we've talked about this. Like, we pitch lines about what Michael McDonald could sing about the legal trouble he was in due to the fact that he opened a hamburger restaurant called Michael McDonald's. And it's the hardest Emily Spivey ever, like, laughter in life. And we printed them all out. We printed them all out and framed it for her on her last show. Oh, that's literally every joke we pitched. But, yeah, like, it's such a dense premise that Michael McDonald's opened his own McDonald's. And then most of the lines are about how he's in just deep legal trouble.
Jorma Taccone
But, like, it's very funny. But the actual leading, like, detail of the piece is that Justin sounds fucking exactly like him and incredible. So it's also that SNL thing, when someone can sing so well and the impression is so on point, it takes it to another dimension.
Seth Meyers
Yes. But I also feel like it's almost so good that people are like, wait, what? Like, they just want to enjoy it and, like, the premise is, like, too much for them.
Jorma Taccone
Right, Fair enough.
Seth Meyers
Yeah.
Jorma Taccone
Also, maybe just that audience doesn't know Michael McDonald the same way a lot of other people. You know what I mean? Like, when Ariana Grande is doing Celine Dion or Bruno Mars is doing that sketch where he's, like, playing all the different pop songs and stuff and sounds exactly like them, I think everyone knows every reference because it's, like, right down the middle of this moment stuff. I mean, I guess Celine Dion, I don't know. I can't speak to that. But.
Seth Meyers
But Celine Dion had just been in a. At an NFL ad.
Jorma Taccone
Right.
Seth Meyers
When she did that, so it made.
Jorma Taccone
Super bowl, no less.
Seth Meyers
Yeah, right.
Jorma Taccone
Which actually says, I don't know if, you know, this is quite high viewership.
Seth Meyers
The Super Bowl.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah.
Andy Samberg
Oh, yeah.
Seth Meyers
Oh, that's good. Good for them.
Jorma Taccone
Yep.
Seth Meyers
That's all right.
Jorma Taccone
That's me making that noise.
Seth Meyers
They put the time in, though, you know, for the Super Bowl.
Andy Samberg
Some of the ads. Some of the ads can cost tens of thousands of dollars on those.
Jorma Taccone
Seth Lee, I like your readers.
Seth Meyers
Thank you, bud. I'm feeling pretty good about my readers.
Jorma Taccone
Yeah. What else?
Seth Meyers
All right, you guys. Well, congratulations anew on the work you did on Mother Lover. It really is a triumph all these years later.
Jorma Taccone
Thank you, Seth.
Andy Samberg
Yes.
Seth Meyers
And I love you.
Jorma Taccone
All right. I love you. And a happy 4th to you.
Seth Meyers
Yep.
Andy Samberg
Yeah.
Seth Meyers
I love Kee.
Jorma Taccone
Yep.
Seth Meyers
I hope when Keev listens to this, he knows how much we love him.
Jorma Taccone
Keev, we love you.
Andy Samberg
Kev, we're talking to you.
Seth Meyers
You know, this was. This was about one that everybody remembers, but I think the next episode's going to be really special because it's about one that nobody knows anything about.
Jorma Taccone
Oh, I love that tease.
Andy Samberg
Oh, yeah, that will be fun.
Seth Meyers
I love that, too. All right, bye, guys.
Jorma Taccone
Bye.
Andy Samberg
Have fun with your families.
Seth Meyers
Love.
Andy Samberg
Love to everybody.
Jorma Taccone
Later, Quaid.
Podcast Summary: The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast – Episode "Motherlover"
Introduction In the July 8, 2025 release of "The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast," host Seth Meyers sits down with The Lonely Island trio—Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone—to delve into their acclaimed SNL Digital Short, "Motherlover." This episode offers an in-depth exploration of the short's creation, reception, and enduring legacy within the landscape of digital comedy and musical satire.
Creation of "Motherlover"
The Musical Beat and Production Process The conversation begins with Akiva Schaffer recounting the origin of the beat used in "Motherlover." He explains, "[21:13]... we would send him music, and he'd be like, 'Oh, I'm fucking with this,'" highlighting Andy Samberg's pivotal role in selecting the perfect beat for the short. Akiva further elaborates on the collaborative process with beatmakers Asa and Drew Campbell, noting the unexpected success of multiple beats they provided: "[21:14]... one later became 'Throw it on the Ground,' one became 'Motherlover.'"
Writing the Lyrics Jorma Taccone shares insights into the songwriting phase, emphasizing the seamless chemistry within the group: "[28:36]... it was super fun to make." He credits Justin Timberlake's contributions, mentioning that Timberlake wrote several key lines, including the iconic "I'm gonna make your mama do a million poses." Samberg adds, "[30:16]... it's 100% his pitch," underscoring Timberlake's significant creative input.
The Music Video and Choreography
Visual Elements and Humor The trio discusses the meticulous planning behind the "Motherlover" music video. Jorma Taccone praises the visual gags, such as the "stringy roast beef sandwiches," stating, "[33:05]... they're floppy roast beef." Seth Meyers highlights the synchronized choreography and humorous costumes: "[32:34]... there's a lot more layers to every setup." The deliberate use of props like sandwiches serves as recurring visual humor that complements the song's risqué lyrics.
Iconic Dance Moves Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone reflect on the creation of the signature dance moves featured in the video. They describe the choreography as a blend of robotic movements and exaggerated gestures, contributing to the short's comedic effect. Taccone remarks, "[41:31]... it was a frozen leg up in the air," illustrating the absurdity and intentional silliness of the dance sequences.
Reception and Impact
Peer Recognition and Popularity "Motherlover" is celebrated by the trio as a peer-voted favorite among their digital shorts. Seth Meyers notes, "[17:02]... 'Motherlover' was voted by your peers as the best digital short," emphasizing its critical acclaim within the SNL community. The short's ability to top the success of previous hits like "Dick in a Box" is attributed to its innovative blend of humor and musicality.
Cultural Influence The hosts discuss the short's lasting impact on digital comedy and its role in pioneering internet-based sketches. Jorma Taccone reminisces, "[28:25]... it's super exciting now, like, everyone's attention was on it production wise," highlighting how "Motherlover" contributed to The Lonely Island's reputation for creating viral, internet-friendly content.
Personal Anecdotes and Behind-the-Scenes Stories
Challenges and Creative Decisions The conversation delves into the initial apprehensions the group had about following up a successful short. Jorma Taccone shares, "[17:28]... we were terrified of it," reflecting the pressure to outdo their previous work. Despite fears, the collaboration with Justin Timberlake and the confidence in their creative direction led to the successful execution of "Motherlover."
Collaborations and Guest Appearances The podcast highlights the involvement of guest stars Patty Clarkson and Susan Sarandon in the music video. They discuss how these high-profile collaborations added depth and humor to the short: "[39:00]... Patty Clarkson and Susan Sarandon were both there," with Samberg praising their performances as "so awesome" and "hilarious."

Seth Meyers [32:51]: "When a sandwich shows up in one of your pieces of work, Andy, for me, it's like when Stan Lee shows up in a Marvel movie."
Andy Samberg [44:38]: "It's that they're so dumb. It's that they're so beyond dumb that you're like, it's fine, it's fine."
Jorma Taccone [68:03]: "I do wish we had Keev. I feel like maybe the idea for this shot originally was just the first half of it."
