Welcome to the Growth Stacking podcast. This is Dan Martell. I'm gonna break down my exact 36 hour week as a multi millionaire in four steps. This is how just last week I was able to shoot 13 podcasts, go to an NBA game, run an Ironman, be present with my kids, and still grow my business. Back in the day, I used to just work, work, work. I'd stay up till two in the morning and I would eat crap food and then I would go to work the next morning and go from meeting to meeting and then in the afternoon, my brain and I'm trying to make these decisions around product and marketing and biz dev and nothing worked. And then eventually I gave myself permission to change my schedule to map to my energy and everything shifted. Here's the strategy. People are always talking about time management. You can't manage time. You can only manage the energy that you've got within that time. First off, you have to work out and eat clean. I can tell the difference when I have sugar or things are not good for me. Second thing is, is you need to decide what do you do in the morning versus what do you do in the afternoon? Because most people, they're incredibly creative and resourceful in the morning, whereas in the afternoon maybe that's better where you're going to collaborate and talk to other people. Now, the most important question to ask is what would make this easier? If you have to do work that feels like work, ask yourself what would be true if this thing was easier? Maybe it's scheduling a meeting with somebody else so that you're accountable to them or that you collaborate with them. Maybe it's deciding to get out of your office and get out somewhere else or where you feel more collaborative or more creative. That is the question that'll change everything for you. This is how I set up my life to continue growing my businesses, but without it being at the expense of everything else that's important to me. You see, a long time ago, I actually ended up in rehab. And even though it was a very dark moment in my life, the silver lining at the end of it was that I was taught this strategy called the Transition plan, where I sat down and I designed my whole life, everything to make my life be set up in a way that was gonna support my new sobriety. And I've taken that concept to my life today. I mean, just this week, I've done podcast interviews, hiked mountains with my kids, ran my event, and even ran an Ironman all in one week. And I know this sounds Crazy, but it's cause I don't have a separation between personal and work. To me, I love the people I work with. My friends are people I do Ironmans with. My wife is my partner in all ways that's just to me, the integrated life. So I wanna teach you my framework to think through this. Here's how it works. So to do it right, you need this framework called the 10x vision map. Essentially it's a four box quadrant that lays out the different areas of your life that matters the most so that you can have a vision for what you're trying to accomplish. The first box is your team. When I think about this, I'm thinking about the people in my life. My friends, my advisors, my co workers, my business partners. It's everybody on the team. Think about if you had to design the best of the best for 50 people that you knew that you would do life with, that you would build businesses with, that you enjoy vacations with. That is the core focus of your team. The second one is your one business. See, most people, they want to have multiple businesses, multiple streams of income. Here's the thing is any wealthy person made it because of one business that they focused on until they got it to scale 10 million plus in revenue. So design that one business, what does it look like, what does the culture look like, what does the brand look like, what are the awards look like? What are you going to do from that business? What are you going to create? So that's number two. The third quadrant is your empire. And this is my favorite part. Some people get scared of the word empire, but for me, an empire is a life you never have to retire from. So ask yourself, if you get successful or when you get successful on that core business, what does that unlock? What's the other things you can do now that you have the resources that were unlocked from that business? Now the fourth area is the lifestyle. What kind of conversations you want to have, what kind of vacations do you want to take? What kind of businesses do you want to co create with other people? What kind of vibe do you want to have when you go and do these things? To me, the lifestyle is the health, it's the fitness. So take the time to sit down and design that map, visualize it, talk about it, be specific and allow it to come to life. If you're listening to this and it feels like a lot, I'm going to share a secret with you next that's going to make this whole thing make sense and feel effortless. If you don't have a goal, you'll spend all of your life running up and down the field and never score. Before I started my company, Spheric, when I was 24, I tried in business, failed. So I started reading books and there's two books that absolutely changed my thinking. It was 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Good to Great by Jim Collins. Those laid the foundation for me of understanding how goals work. So to do this, I have this framework I teach called the Slingshot Planner. Working with you, I'm just going to draw these boxes and go three years from now, let's talk about the numbers, let's talk about the revenue, let's talk about the team size, three year target, a two year and a one year. Then I take out another piece of paper. From now to 12 months from now, we break it up into four quarters and we do the same thing. What are the numbers? The team size, the revenue, the other metrics for each quarter. We want to do one new thing in two upgrades. I'm actually going to four force you to only pick one new thing per quarter. So if that's Facebook ads, if that's strategic partnerships, if that's a new product suite, I want you to literally constrain yourself that you only have four shots on goal this year, this quarter to do new things. But then I'm going to invite you to look at what you're currently doing that's kind of working, but you haven't really put enough resources behind it and choose two projects that are upgrades. So now you have a clear understanding how to think strategically in your goals. The next process, if you don't understand this, you will take all this momentum, all this excitement and flush it down the drain. Because it requires a way to plan. And not having that means you're going to literally just run in circles. You know, the day before you go on vacation, you get three times as much done than any other normal day. Why is that? Well, here's what I've learned. I used to be that guy that would just work a little bit, feel really good about myself and then take a couple hours off. I didn't have a strategy. And then I read a book by David Allen and everything changed. It's called getting things done. The way I work is completely different. I have a place for all the crazy distractions that come into my world so I can be incredibly productive. Here's how it works. So I'm here in Scottsdale for a week and this is how I plan that week. First thing I do is I pull up my iPad and I have this template that I use. I take all the activities, commitments, things that I already had to do before I came, then I add to that list and I had everything that I would like to do. The people I'd love to meet, the different companies that I want to connect with, maybe the other podcasts I want to be on. So I have this complete list and I looked at the seven days and I design it by three parts. I have the morning, the afternoon, in the night, and I take all the ingredients of that perfect week and I move them over into the different time slots and I'm batching things together so the energies flow. Once I have all those parts in there and I see what fits, what doesn't, and I make some concessions, then I give that to my assistant to start executing the logistics, the timing, the travel time, all of it. It's on her to figure it out and then only bring back to me where there's conflicts. So that's my four step process for how to design the perfect week. Release Date: November 10, 2023
Host: Dan Martell
In this compelling episode, Dan Martell delves into his proven strategies for meticulously planning a week that balances business growth with personal well-being. Drawing from his journey from rehabilitation at 17 to building a $100M empire, Martell shares actionable insights and frameworks designed to help entrepreneurs and leaders optimize their time and energy effectively.
Dan begins by recounting his former workaholic lifestyle, characterized by sleepless nights and poor eating habits, which ultimately led to ineffective decision-making and stagnation in his business growth.
"Back in the day, I used to just work, work, work. I'd stay up till two in the morning and eat crap food, going from meeting to meeting"
— Dan Martell [00:01]
Recognizing the unsustainability of this approach, Martell emphasizes the shift from managing time to managing energy as the cornerstone of his transformation.
"People are always talking about time management. You can't manage time. You can only manage the energy that you've got within that time."
— Dan Martell [00:02]
Martell highlights the importance of aligning daily activities with natural energy peaks. He suggests dedicating mornings to creative and resourceful tasks and reserving afternoons for collaborative efforts.
"Decide what you do in the morning versus what you do in the afternoon. Most people are incredibly creative and resourceful in the morning, whereas in the afternoon, that's better for collaboration."
— Dan Martell [00:02]
A pivotal strategy discussed is reimagining tasks to reduce friction and enhance efficiency. Martell encourages asking, "What would make this easier?" to streamline workflows and foster accountability.
"If you have to do work that feels like work, ask yourself what would be true if this thing was easier."
— Dan Martell [00:03]
Examples include delegating meetings for accountability, collaborating with others, or changing environments to boost creativity.
Martell shares his personal philosophy of blending personal life with professional endeavors, leading to a more fulfilling and balanced existence.
"I don't have a separation between personal and work. To me, I love the people I work with. My friends are people I do Ironmans with. My wife is my partner in all ways."
— Dan Martell [00:07]
This integration allows him to achieve significant personal milestones alongside business growth without compromising either.
Introducing the 10x Vision Map, Martell presents a four-quadrant framework to visualize and strategize the most critical aspects of life:
Focuses on the people who support and collaborate with you, emphasizing the importance of surrounding yourself with the best.
"Think about the people in your life—friends, advisors, coworkers, business partners. Design the best team you can."
— Dan Martell [00:05]
Advocates for concentrating on a single business venture to scale effectively, rather than diversifying prematurely.
"Any wealthy person made it because of one business that they focused on until they got it to scale 10 million plus in revenue."
— Dan Martell [00:06]
Defines an empire as a sustainable life where success in business unlocks broader opportunities and resources.
"An empire is a life you never have to retire from. It unlocks other things you can do with the resources from your business."
— Dan Martell [00:06]
Encompasses health, fitness, personal relationships, and the overall quality of life you aim to maintain.
"The lifestyle is the health, it's the fitness. Design the conversations, vacations, and vibes you want in your life."
— Dan Martell [00:06]
Martell introduces the Slingshot Planner, a robust framework for setting and achieving long-term goals. The process involves:
"I want you to literally constrain yourself that you only have four shots on goal this year, this quarter to do new things."
— Dan Martell [00:08]
This approach ensures disciplined growth and strategic resource allocation.
Emphasizing the necessity of a structured planning system, Martell references David Allen's "Getting Things Done", which transformed his productivity by organizing distractions and tasks efficiently.
"Having a place for all the crazy distractions allows me to be incredibly productive."
— Dan Martell [00:09]
Martell shares a step-by-step method for planning a week, illustrated by his own example in Scottsdale:
"I take all the activities, commitments, things that I already had to do, add everything I'd like to do, and design it into different time slots."
— Dan Martell [00:10]
This method facilitates a balanced and productive week, aligning personal and professional goals seamlessly.
