Foreign. Feels like we're in that point of the spring where it's time to put a pin in the 2026 NFL Draft, but not quite yet. You've got questions, We've got answers. Today's the mailbag portion of the McShay show, and we're fired up for it. And guess what? Just 343 days until the NFL Draft. Good men.
Mensch
I'm great, man.
Todd McShay
Hold that beat, Tuck. I've gladly mentioned, been allowed myself to be stripped of some executive decisions on this show. I'm.
Dan
I'm.
Todd McShay
I'm divying out more responsibility to others as you're maturing. I'm maturing. And I think after, like, 18, 16, 18 months of just screaming from the mountaintops that we're here, it's time to. To advance our show, make it a better hang and. And, you know, and utilize the resources that we have at the Ringer and Spotify. I did make the executive decision to talk to executives about, let's get Dan on the show, send him a camera. And it may be the worst decision I've. I will ever make, or it may be something that. That. That expands our show and adds a little bit more character and fun to it.
Mensch
So really building up Cobra's confidence before you bring him on. I love it.
Todd McShay
We're like the military here. You gotta. You gotta beat down before you build up, you know? Yes. So. So welcome in, Dan. We're pumped to have you on the show.
Mensch
There he is. Yeah.
Todd McShay
And Dan was. If you follow the show at all, you know, Tucker is the man who, like, he's the wizard of Oz. He makes everything happen. Tucker's the favorite, then it's Mensch.
Mensch
Yeah.
Todd McShay
I think people are trying to figure out, do they love Dan yet or what's his role? Is it like Regis and Kathy with whatever his name is, the producer, or. Or is it like. Is he. Is he. Is he Mike Ruiz? Michael Ruiz from. From the Lebatard Show? You know, like, we're gonna find out now. It's up to him now. He gets to make his own. Create his own path, if you will. So, Dan, welcome on the show, brother. Thank you, Todd.
Dan
Thank you for that intro. I'm here to do some mailbag stuff, so we can. You want to jump into it? Are we ready for some mailbag stuff?
Mensch
Well, I have a quick question. You did have.
Todd McShay
That's the producer right there.
Mensch
Like, yeah, like, not. Not so fast, my friend. Did you. You had to get a camera for this, right? A special camera?
Dan
I did, yeah. 4K 4K.
Mensch
Cool. Do you think we can invest in, like, a light that maybe makes you look like you're not in, like a hostage situation?
Todd McShay
Yes. Yeah. Three times. Yeah.
Mensch
Maybe a lamp of some sort.
Dan
Well, so when Tucker and I did the lighting yesterday, we tested it like 5 o'. Clock. It was perfect. Perfectly bright. Golden hour.
Todd McShay
Yeah.
Mensch
Yeah. The magic hour.
Todd McShay
Yeah.
Dan
Not.
Todd McShay
Not as nice here. We thought, oh, it'll be good. We.
Dan
We rolled up and it's just a gray day in Los Angeles, so. Not too sunny in here. I apologize. But we'll, we'll adjust in post. We'll figure it out in post.
Mensch
There we go.
Todd McShay
That's what they always say.
Dan
All right, let's.
Todd McShay
Let's get to it. Mailbag. What do you got, Dan?
Dan
First one for you. What is the latest update? And this was from Dan in la. What is the latest update on Brennan Sorsby filed an injunction against the ncaa, wants to play. But then there's the supplemental draft looming. What's going on?
Todd McShay
Yeah, there's. There's going to be a lot of legal jargon. Okay. There's going to be, you know, the, the basically what Sorsby and his, and his, his lawyer, lawyers and support staff are coming to the table with is that it's. This is mental health and that he clinically, you know, checked himself into rehab and the gambling. We've now, you know, there's. There's been information coming out as these documents are turned into the court, they become, you know, public to a certain degree. And we're talking about like, not hundreds, but thousands of bets and like Turkish, I don't even. Turkish basketball and all, you know, so like. And what they're claiming is that it was, you know, a mental health issue and that so. And that will. It will irreparably harm Sorsby to not play this season. So this is going to go back and forth and then the NCAA comes back and issues a statement. The NCAA has not received a reinstatement request for this case. The ncaa, NCAA generally doesn't comment on pending reinstatement requests, but the association's sports betting rules are clear, as are the reinstatement conditions when it comes to betting on one's own. And it goes on and on. So.
Mensch
So that doesn't sound very encouraging, by the way.
Todd McShay
No, no. When it comes to betting on one's own team, these rules must be enforced in every case for the simple reason that the integrity of the. So that's. That's what was stated and that's going to be the back and forth, one side's argument versus the other side's argument. The interesting part from where we stand. Sorry. Mentioned. Go ahead. The interesting part from where we stand as a, you know, a college football, NFL and NFL draft show is how's this all going to play out? And so for, for Soresby, you've got NFL teams now, I don't want to say scrambling, but like investing resources and time into where. What's the timeline? When can we, if, if he is part of the supplemental draft, when can we meet with him as a, like a workout opportunity, interviews, all of that. Right. And then you've got Texas Tech who's fighting its own suit and has its own set of lawyers that trying to get Sourcebee back because they've invested 6 million in him. So with all those things said, the most recent update is as of Tuesday that Adam Schefter in an ex post supplemental draft paperwork is June, is due June 22 and the draft likely would be at the end of July. And we told you early on that it's kind of a, it's not set in stone. It's typically something will happen in June if, and sometimes at the end of June there would be a supplemental draft. It's been three years since we've had one. It's been a long time since anyone's been drafted. We went through all that with you on earlier shows. But that's, that's the timeline. So essentially this case is being heard. It's the wheels of justice are moving quickly. Everyone involved wants an answer so they can move on and figure out, okay, what are the next steps.
Mensch
Yeah, that June 22nd date is what jumps out to me. Like they've got to get some stuff figured out by then. So it looks like this will move, move quickly. And I wonder what the rules are like once you file a paperwork, are you in? Is there no backing out at that point? It's going to be interesting to see how quick this moves.
Todd McShay
Yeah. And we're sitting here on, on May 21st and we're talking one month away. And so there's, and we saw even with, and I know it's a different case, but some, there are some similarities in terms of like timelines and legal operations and procedures that with Trinidad Chambliss.
Mensch
Right, right.
Todd McShay
And how, and how that got to a point, as we warned, where there was no turning back. And Chambliss had, had he not been reinstated at that point, very likely would have had to file to be in a supplemental draft rather than the 2026 draft, which was held last month, just about a month ago today, so.
Mensch
Right.
Todd McShay
Hope that answers your quote. Your question, Dan from la.
Dan
I think it did. All right, let's move on to the actual questions. This one's from Kevin. I'm a huge Commanders fan who has been hurt too many times by first round disappointments on defense. Tell me why Sonny Styles is different.
Todd McShay
I mean there's a lot of reasons why Sonny Styles is different. Let's, let's talk traits for a second. You're talking 6 foot 4 or 6 foot 5. Sorry, 6 foot 5, 244 pounds. You're talking about a guy who ran a 4456 of the combine, had a 43 inch vertical jump, had an 112 broad jump. These are elite. Elite, elite record setting type numbers.
Mensch
Right.
Todd McShay
Safety, his first year at Ohio State, second year, got better and better as the season progressed. Third year, became one of the elite defensive players in all the country and was on a defense with Arvell Reese and Caleb Downs and was every bit the star and one of the three, three stars of that defense in their own right.
Mensch
Right.
Todd McShay
I had him as, I mean we had him, I don't want to say consensus mention, you can chime in on this, but had him as the number three player in the entire draft class behind just Jeremiah, Maya Love and Arvell Reese. I think that highly of him. He's an off the ball lineback. You're talking about elite range. Elite.
Mensch
Yeah.
Todd McShay
Top five player, right? The wingspan, hard to throw around, all the things you look for. And this underrated element of his ability to get turned loose as a blitzer. What does that all mean and why won't he be a bust? Dan Quinn's defense has always thrived when it has a like speed, athleticism at that Mike linebacker spot, right? That inside linebacker spot. You go back to Deon Jones in Atlanta. They had the undersized like 210, 215 pound guys in, in Dallas. Like this defense needs speed there. There's also this, this twist where, where the Commanders hired new defensive coordinator in Durante Jones, right. And he comes in to bring more flexibility. And how does he bring flexibility with multiplicity in terms of personnel. And this in Sonny Styles a lot. So he's accomplishing two goals. And while Bobby Wagner is one of the all time greats, Wagner wasn't for Washington last year. What he was even in Seattle before that. And so like time gets everybody, man.
Mensch
Like age catches up with everyone.
Todd McShay
Father time.
Mensch
There's a Hall of Famer probably But like, he's at the end of it,
Todd McShay
long, short on it. Not only is he a superstar athletically, he is a perfect fit for what, what Quinn has always done. And now to advance that defensive scheme and, and I think the thing too, to keep an eye on, like, he's a rookie, it won't be surprising at all knowing his intelligence, the iq I told you, the executive I talked to, he's like, this guy's going to run his own company. He's going to be a CEO. Like, he's that smart. He's got it, he's got his stuff together that much that he's like the green dot for this defense. Like, he's going to bring so many elements to that defense. I, I, like, find like Manuel Forbes was a reach. I'm, I mean, J. Davis was a reach. Chase Young was a disappointment. I just don't see that happening here with Styles.
Dan
All right, moving on to the next one. I'm going to go back to Todd on this one. By drafting Ty Simpson with a 13th overall pick, do you believe that McVeigh will prolong his coaching tenure with the Rams? This is from Thomas.
Todd McShay
He better. I, I, I think the old, the old adage of the chicken was the chicken before the egg. Like, I think it was the chicken, not the egg here. I think everyone was stating because there's been rumors and speculation and I think there's been like, honest, legitimate thought process going on from McVeigh that maybe he doesn't want to be a light. I, I know this. How about this? I know that McVeigh is looking at his career a little bit different than maybe a Belichick and, you know, someone who's just going to be a lifer.
Dan
Right.
Todd McShay
And almost maybe to the, I don't want to say the day they die, but like to the very, very end till they physically, mentally cannot coach any longer. Right. I don't think that's in McVeigh's future. I think that he's, he's always had an outlook of, I'm not going to be doing this when I'm 60 something years old. But that doesn't mean he's not going to, what is he, 40? I don't know, 45, 43. I don't even know what his age. But that doesn't mean he's not be doing it in his late 40s, early, early 50s. And so why I say this is the chicken, not the egg. I think this was a decision made in, we have an organization to run.
Mensch
He's only 40 years old, dude.
Todd McShay
40? Yeah. So, so crazy. So even if he's coaching at 46, he's a baby, right? Yeah, absolute baby. And six years from now, Matthew Stafford's not. So this was. Let's have a transition plan and we saw with Green Bay, with. With Aaron Rodgers to Favre and love to Rogers, like Philadelphia, you know, like, let's. Let's draft the next guy because the best time to draft a quarterback is when we have one. And that's exactly what they did. And I know that les Sneed and McVay were lockstep on this decision, despite the interview right after where McVeigh was very clearly trying to send a message to the locker room that this is not about us. You know, there's no question who the leader is. This is not about us for, like, even next year, like we are very much. This train is rolling fast and. And the rookie's gonna have to come on and play his role in. In the caboose, you know.
Dan
All right, this one's from Austin. Seahawks fan. Doesn't that. And I'm gonna go to Mitch with this one. Doesn't the Jadarian Price pick feel like some sort of mismatch between his individual talent compared to the rest of the market? I just can't over. I can't get over taking him at number 32 and guys like Emmett Johnson and Jonah Coleman went on day three. Is the gap really that large?
Todd McShay
No.
Mensch
I mean, Austin knows ball, man. And I struggle with this because of my respect for John Schneider, the GM for the Seahawks. But this is still. This is one that's sticking with me of. I just don't get it. And it feels like reaching to fill a need. You let Kenneth Walker go. Zach Charbonnet is coming off a knee injury and I know the Cam Acres never really lived up to his potential, but they cut him as well. I do like the Emmanuel Wilson signing. I think that's a sneaky signing. He's a bigger back that can eat up some carries. But I look at this and I think, I don't understand even the fit. Seattle ran the ball the third. They had the third most rushing attempts last year. Now you have a 205 pound back with not a ton of depth around him. Is this the guy that can carry that kind of a workload? He's never done it before. I don't think he's really built to do it. I think Jadarian Price has a chance to be an outstanding number two complimentary back. If there was someone That I think that the ceiling would be, the ceiling would be for him is it's like a Travion Henderson. And I like Travion Henderson better coming out of Ohio State, he went in the second round and he's a guy that is really a number two who complements Ramon Stevenson pretty well in New England. So to me, this is one that's going to stick with me. This is.
Todd McShay
I get you. I do, I get you. And I'm not saying you're alone, but I do think that the majority of people in the league viewed him at fugitarian prices. Like you'd like to get him early mid second, right? Okay. And Schneider has since come out and said we tried to move back and there was just, there wasn't a deal that was reasonable. And when we picked late in the second round, we ain't getting him, he's going to be gone. And so it's kind of, it's knowing them. I hear you, I hear you. But to Austin's point, is there a
Mensch
big difference between getting Jadarian, same price, or I like Mike Washington coming out Arkansas, who's built to, to carry the ball 20 times a game if you need him to do that. Like that's, that's the point I think that Austin's making. And the one that like really resonates with me is yeah, you, he might not be there, but you take the chance because he's just, it's just too much to give up for that kind of player at the end of the first round and, and you can start to look at him, be like, compare him to the other backs. I think he was the best, second best back in this class. I agree with that. And so you're looking at it maybe that way. But what other players, what other positions could they have addressed with a 32nd pick? And that's I think the better way of looking at it. Can you get better along your offensive line? I mean whatever you want to look at. That's what it comes into me in terms of managing the roster. Like if you miss out on Jadarian Price in this because you waited until the second round, I think that's more acceptable or better to me than reaching to get him in the first round because the, like Austin's saying the drop in talent isn't that substantial. There is a big gap between Jeremiah,
Todd McShay
in your opinion and I, I don't think. Correct. I, I think, I think Jonah Coleman is closer. But that's my opinion.
Mensch
Right. 100.
Todd McShay
But that doesn't mean that that's the Seahawks opinion. Or, or, or John Schneider's opinion. So, anyway, moving on. I, I hear you. Sorry. I hear you. And, and, and I love the fact that you're sticking to your guns. I just, I also want to represent the, the reasons why, like, Schneider, Schneider didn't wake up and, and, and take a sn. You know what I mean?
Mensch
Like, no, that's why I struggle with it. You're right. Listen, I said that out the jump. I've said it before. I'm going to continue to say it. Like, it makes me hesitate to say it, but this is what I see. I look at their roster, I look at the way they run their offense and I look at the player and it's not, it's not a great match, it's not a great value. And that's what's concerning to me.
Dan
All right, we're going back to Mitch on this one. Where would Carnell Tate rank among recent Ohio State first round wide out prospects? This one's.
Mensch
So I, I wanted to out of the gate, go back and kind of just rank him how I remember them and, and realize quickly that I was going to put JSN way higher than we had out, which isn't really accurate. So I just went back and looked at our grades. There's been six Ohio State wide receivers to go in the first round over the last five drafts. They're Marvin Harrison Jr. Who we gave in 95, the highest. Clearly. Garrett Wilson, we gave a 93. Carnell Tate, we gave a 93. I would have Garrett Wilson ahead of Carnell Tate, but right there, then Chris Alave, 91, Jackson Smith and Jigba, 90. And then this. I want. There's an asterisk on this one, obviously. Michelle Mecca, Igbuka. I gave an 87. Todd and I were, we had different boards at that point. So I went with my grade, which was an 87. I think Todd probably had a 98 for him. I don't know. Todd, you can speak to that.
Todd McShay
90. I think at 90, he's right.
Mensch
He's right in the middle. He's right in the middle. He's third out of six, which I think is pretty damn good. He's a good route runner. He obviously went a lot higher than some of these other guys, but that's just the way the draft was this year in terms of talent at different positions. You know, if he was in a different draft, he probably would have gone after Garrett Wilson, who went later. So there's all that, that comes into play. But when we're looking at their grades, how we felt about them as prospects coming out. Carnell Tate was third of the six to go in the last five years.
Dan
Okay. All right, we're moving on to Max. This one's going towards Todd. As a Cardinals fan, how come the national media was celebrating the possibility of the Titans selecting Jeremiah Love, but considered it too early when the Cardinals did it.
Todd McShay
Maybe I missed out on that. You know, we were busy, obviously, watching Tate and tape and working sources and setting boards and everything else. I. I don't know that that's exactly true, but if it. But if it is, I mean, and you certainly feel that way, Max. I think. I think it's because Tennessee has a young quarterback, right? And they have their guy. I think it's because Tennessee had. Has. Has an offensive line that is improved. I think it's. Tennessee has a. An offensive coordinator that. That is proven. Not saying that LaFleur isn't. He certainly is, but that they. It feels like Tennessee put a lot of pieces together. I think it's because Tennessee, quite frankly, like, they spent a lot of offseason resources on the defensive side. I think Tennessee did a better job in the off season and. And in the last year of getting this roster. I don't want to say in shape, like, they're not ready to make a playoff run in my estimation, but I think they can, like, be hanging around. I think in December, like, Tennessee can be like, wow, they're only two games. You know what I mean?
Mensch
And.
Todd McShay
And. And have a trajectory of. We've got this thing rolling the right way. Whereas Arizona, like, Tennessee in 2025, like the run blocking with Kevin Zeitler coming in and some of those younger guys starting to improve. Like, this group, they ran, they. They had a pretty good. Not great. It was about middle of the package. Run blocking unit, right? Arizona now, again, go back to chicken and egg. Like, obviously the injury, James Conner and all that, but the. With the run blocking metrics, and if you watch them on, like, their run blocking took a massive hit a year ago. So now you look at this organization that doesn't have its quarterback, it feels like. It feels a lot like Vegas the year before. Now, Ashton Genti still had, what do we say, over 1300 yards from scrimmage, right?
Dan
And.
Todd McShay
And I think Jeremiah Love is actually more talented than Ashton Genti. And I would argue that Arizona is in better shape than. Than Vegas was going into last year. In fact, I think it's borderline fact. So I think those are some of the reasons why? You know, to just to answer your question, Max, but that doesn't mean and I don't think we're if you're Arizona, you're set up for great success this year, but I do think it could be a Genti like experience where year two is better than one and year three you start to see oh, that's why we took him in the top

kind of a combo question. How do you expect this is a long one. This is a long one. I'm just going to kind of.
Mensch
I'm trying to rip through it.
Dan
Yeah. How do you expect the jets to get their two new rookie weapons, Kenyan Sadiq and Omar Cooper Jr. Involved in the offense? And is there a realistic scenario where the jets may have stumbled into their franchise quarterback in bargain bin price for With Cade Clubnik.
Mensch
All right, let's start with the. The studs. I, you know, in digging into what Frank Reich, the new offense coordinator, might do traditionally, it's my understanding that he's run with a lot of. He's run a lot of 11 personnel, which means one back, one tight end, three wide receivers. I think with Sadiq in the fold, they're gonna. You're gonna see more 12 personnel. Although this is a little bit of semantics, I'll get into this in a second so they can get Mason Taylor and Sadiq on the field. The reason why I kind of say it, semantics is that I think that Sadiq's gonna line up in the slot a fair amount. So you really have 12 personnel, but looks like more of a traditional 11 alignment. I hope all of that makes sense. That being said, I think you're gonna see more two tight end sets for the jets than maybe you would have thought with Reich traditionally on top of that, they need more explosive plays. I think Reich's going to be really. They've just committed, you know, they just signed the contract with Breeze Hall. I think Reich's going to be really committed to the ground game. I think you're going to see them take some shots to Sadiq off play action. I think that makes just way too much sense. I expect him to get this ball to Sadiq on some tight end screens. I think he's really good at that. Oregon, I think he'd be really good at the pros. Getting into Omar Cooper Jr. What does he do best? I think he's outstanding after the catch. I'm expecting a lot of quick hitters. I mean, Reich runs a version of the west coast offense where you got a lot of horizontal routes. He will mix in RPOs. You're going to see some quick hitters to Cooper Jr. That allow him to do what he does best, which is create after the catch. If they can get those linebackers to jump up a little bit with the RPO in the play action and get him behind that second level, watch out, because you can get some explosive plays that way too. I also think they can use Sadiq to do some of the same things. Again, Sadiq and Cooper both gonna work out of the slot. So that's how I think. That's how I think they'll get them involved and how they'll use them. As far as Club Nick is concerned, realistic is an answer. Is is an interesting word. Here's what has to happen for all of that to go down and for Club Nick to be your bargain bin franchise quarterback, he has to win the backup rolling camp. I think then you need Geno to either get hurt, which would be unfortunate, or play at such a low level that they decide to go with Clubnik. You would need for that to happen early enough in the season that for Club Nick to come in and have an outstanding run and somehow make the jets competitive and maybe even a playoff team. And then you would have to feel so strongly about that performance that you were going to overlook the generational talent that's in the 2027 class. If it was a movie, McShay, you'd be like, really?
Todd McShay
I reckon I recognize what you're doing because you're asked the question, you have to answer it. But I think it also would require the league revoking the jets their three first round picks next year. And you know what I mean?
Mensch
I don't think it's realistic. Now. Kurt Warner was bagging groceries and playing the Arena League and. And all of a sudden he turns into to Kurt Warner. So, like, strange things happen in the league.
Todd McShay
They do.
Mensch
I doubt it. I doubt it.
Todd McShay
Yeah. Yeah. The percentages are very low. But. But I. I appreciate you. You providing a. A path.
Mensch
You know, I try to be honest about it.
Todd McShay
Yeah, he's got talent. That's the thing. Like. Like there was. There was so much to like about the way he was tracking and progressing going into last year to the point where. Put him in the first round of the way too early mock draft and saw a lot of positive things. The hard part to, to wrap my head around and, and quite frankly, this is why they took a shot in the fourth round. Everyone at Clemson, everyone. It's hard to have nine players drafted and have the season that Clemson had in the. Everyone from woods to Parker, except. Except the offensive tackle, Blake Miller. Br. Blake Miller. Thank you. Except Blake Miller. I think everyone except Blake Miller showed some element of regression. Antonio Williams is really good too, but like. But was limited in what he could do. So. So that's what you're kind of backing on. All right, go ahead, Dan. Sorry.
Dan
All right, this one's from Matt. We're going to Todd with this one. Which Colts draft pick are you most excited to see play develop and play and develop and which pick will have the biggest impact on this season? We've got a lot of people from the Colts fan base being like, y' all don't talk about the Colts. So this is a chance to. To talk about the Colts. Yeah.
Todd McShay
I mean, well, if you remember correctly, right after the draft. I think on Monday after the draft when we did our big recap show, I narrowed it down to three teams. I thought the jets and the Browns just absolutely killed the draft. Right. But then I went through a few teams, including the Colts, that if you just look at it from a value standpoint, what they started with, which was not a lot entering into the draft, seven draft picks, only two in the top 100, no first round pick to walk away with the value that they did through the seven rounds. I put them up there. You know, Washington was another team there. There were three teams, I think that I wound up saying, like, they got max value for what they came into the draft with. Okay. I, I am fired up. Like the first name that popped in my head and then as I went back and reviewed to make sure there was nobody else, it remained the same name. Third round pick AJ Hussey.
Mensch
Love him.
Todd McShay
I'm not, I'm not saying he's gonna be Bob Sanders, but my gosh, does this defense need a, like a face, a tone setter? Yeah, like a guy that. And listen, C.J. allen is probably going to develop into like the green dot and the stability and the leadership and his character and everything that you would kind of expect from a veteran coming from Georgia at linebacker would be, he's going to be all those things. And there was clearly for, for Chris Ballard, the general manager, there was a clear emphasis on we got to get tougher, more physical up the middle. Like, let's, let's, let's be. The defense just hasn't had that, like, I don't know, the, like the tenacity and that. Like a couple faces where you're like, I don't want to go play this team, you know, and now you bring in CJL. But Halsey's 5 11, 215, 89 tackles last year. Yeah, like, we're going to have to, we're going to have to protect him in some manto man stuff. And he may, he's not going to be your deep center fielder. But look at their depth chart, man. Look at their safety depth chart. It's frightening. And so he's, this is a third round pick's going to come in plug and play starter, impact guy. I think he quickly becomes a, like the, the communication leader of that secondary.
Mensch
Right.
Todd McShay
And, and I, I just, I, I love the impact. I'm excited to see how he develops, how he's utilized, but I'm also excited to watch on Sundays when he's just knocking dudes out and he's flying around the field and he's doing in the NFL what he was doing at lsu. And I think Colts fans are going to sit back and be like, that's my guy. Like buying jerseys.
Mensch
You know what I mean?
Todd McShay
Like, I'm a whole.
Mensch
He's got to clean up some of the angles. But yeah, I'm with you, man. And he'll play the ball a little bit. I think. I'm just going to say this. I think they might have got three starters on defense. I think C.J. allen and Halsey are going to be starters. And watch out for Bryce. Betcha fourth round pick, man, I wouldn't be surprised, maybe not this year. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being the starter for the Colts. And when you don't have. When you. Like when you're in the position that you just described and you might get three starters on defense. Pretty good. Pretty good weekend.
Todd McShay
And I would argue no team in the league had a better seventh round. While everyone, you know, here we go.
Mensch
For sure. That'd be the first guy.
Todd McShay
We're cutting Kuipers pumpkin. Pumpkin pie. And people are heading out to the beach if you're in, you know, or hanging around. I'm telling you, Seth McGowan is going to be a guy that really helps. With Jonathan Taylor taking some snaps and. Yes. Dion Burks. Yes.
Mensch
I was like, what do you mean?
Todd McShay
Seth McGowan is going to be. Think about it, though. They got two guys that are going to impact the offense.
Mensch
Yeah.
Todd McShay
And Dion Burks is an explosive vertical guy who, even if he's the number four receiver, will add an element of speed and explosiveness to that offense. So I love Roy Ballard and the Colts did.
Mensch
And Jalen Farmer. I'm not as high the guard. I'm not as high from Kentucky and Colts fans. Here you go. Here's your whole draft. Jalen Farmer. I'm not as high as you were, but he's. He has the talent to start in the league. Man, if he figures it out, he could be a starting guard and right
Todd McShay
up the middle of both sides of the ball, you know. Yeah.
Dan
All right, we're going back to Mitch on this one from Brian in Boston and Austin. How will drafting Caleb Lomo affect Will Campbell?
Mensch
Wait, is Brian from Boston in Austin? Is this like a road trip thing or is it. No, it's like Brian and Brian.
Dan
It's Austin and then it's Brian in Boston. But if I say Austin and Brian in Boston, it sounds like they're both from Boston.
Todd McShay
You know, our guy. Our guy Elio got you used to do this bit with. I'm trying to think. There are a couple other guys, and they would love to call places and be like, yeah, yeah, I'm coming from. I'm calling from Austin, and I want to, you know, I'm trying to figure out if we can get a delivery, you know, and they're like, austin, we're in. We're in. Weymouth. What do you like? No, no. Boston, you think? I said Austin. Boston. So I'm wondering if this is trickled down.
Mensch
Yeah, this could be a thing. All right. We're speculating about a guy's, like, mental, like, reaction or mental strength here and mental toughness. I'm kind of a little uncomfortable with it. I think that's what this question is, really. But I'm going to say this. I had concerns about Will Campbell's arm. Like, I have no concerns about the man's competitiveness, the man's intelligence, the man's overall mental toughness. And I really don't think Lomu is going to affect him other than another guy to compete with. And I think that it will bring out the best. I think he'll be fine. I think the Loma was drafted because Morgan Moses at right tackle is 35 years old, and they need depth along the offensive defensive line, and they need a plan for when Moses. Either the play drops off or he retires. So that's why I think Lomu was brought in. I really don't. Again, I think Campbell, from a mental standpoint, from a character standpoint, isn't is everything you're looking for in an offensive lineman. And don't give me this stuff about him like, you know, how pissed off he was after the Super Bowl. I think that's more of a reflection about the competitor than it was him not being mentally tough. So to me, there's no reason for me not to believe Elliott Wolf when he tells us that Will Campbell's their left tackle going forward. Now, if Will Campbell has a terrible year, maybe that changes. But right now, I think he had a pretty solid rookie season with some. Some notable hiccups when you're going against Miles Garrett. Good luck to anyone doing that, let alone a rookie. Obviously, he wasn't great during the playoff run, but he might have been banged up. I don't think them drafting Caleb Lomu was them, you know, panicking and saying, we need a replacement for Will Campbell.
Todd McShay
Just ask Elliot Wolf, you know who.
Mensch
Yeah, I mean, why wouldn't I believe him?
Todd McShay
Right down the gun barrel of Steve mentioned when he asked him an absurdly timed question of is he your left tackle? And he said, will Campbell is our left tackle.
Mensch
Dude, back me up, man. That wasn't that bad.
Dan
I am ready. I. Yeah, I have to come in on this. That was some capital J journalism by Mitch, I gotta say.
Todd McShay
There you go.
Dan
We didn't come on there saying, hey, you know, we'll ask you whatever questions you want. Like, I'm gonna ask you the hard hitting ones. That came out, by the way, like,
Todd McShay
yeah, I take my advice from. From journalism school, you know.
Dan
Yeah.
Todd McShay
When we're trying to create. Maybe in journalism school, they didn't talk to you about, like, fireside chats and like, let's. Let's warm up the guests and make them comfortable so we can have a conversation where we get a lot of. A lot of information and just, you know, share who they are, assume, and then we can get to some of the tougher stuff as we go on. But, yeah, I'm glad that Northwestern taught you to just come in and be a prick right away.
Mensch
Yeah. Best part is we walked out of that room and I looked at Todd and I was like, that's pretty good, right? Like, you like. And he was like, do you know how bad that could have gone? Like, I totally misread McShay's response. I thought McShay was like, nice walking out of there. He was like, dude, thank God that wasn't, like, didn't ruin the whole interview.
Dan
Oh, man, we could get into it.
Todd McShay
Love the question. It was the timing. Everyone in my house, it's not. It's not about what's happening. It's about the timing of it, you know?
Dan
Yeah, we could get into a whole capital Capital J Journalism Patriots conversation, but we can. We can move to the next one.
Mensch
Oh, okay, here we go.
Dan
Will the Panthers be one of the teams looking to draft One of the first round QBs in the 2027 draft? This one's from Preston. And if so, how does the rest of 2027 and beyond look in terms of the rest of the roster for the Panthers this season? This one's from Preston. This one will go to Todd.
Todd McShay
I think Dan Morgan, the general manager, is handling this situation brilliantly. Let's. Let's hand Bryce Young the. The fifth year option right now. We got him locked in through 2027, and then as we do that, let's publicly go out and stay. And I truly believe that they believe this, but they haven't seen enough over a Long enough period of time to go reward him with some, some, one of these contracts that were, you know, that's gonna, it's gonna impede our ability to continue to build around Bryce Young with the amount of money and the salary cap hits that are required for a Josh Allen deal, a Mahomes deal, you know, so, so brilliantly handled by Dan Morgan. And listen, nobody wants Bryce Young to succeed more than, than Morgan and the executives in that organization. That's the best path for all of this. Rather than bringing in a rookie in 2027 and kind of feeling like you're starting over again. Right. So that's what everyone wants. But let's not give away the bag and affect our ability to go and sign other guys in the off season. Let's, let's have a two year run now or at least one more year and we can come back to the negotiating table next summer, which is what they've essentially said and see where we are. Because you got to remember Bryce Young got benched in the middle of 2024 before he got benched, guys, he threw 11 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions. And you could just see if you watched a half of football, the struggles that he was having. Then he comes back from being benched in the season and a half since then. He is, what is it, 38 touchdowns and 17 interceptions last year in 2025, career highs in passing yards, QBR touchdowns. Like the trajectory is headed there, but we haven't seen it long enough. So this is, this is the play. So could they be in the market? Yeah, this is absolutely a one year contract type deal. It's like a, no different than like a Joe Flacco type situation when he bet on himself for a year. Now granted you still have 2027 with him, but they're going to know at the end of next season what they have in Bryce Young. And I applaud them too to their three first two of their top three picks in this draft or Monroe Freeling to help protect the quarterback. And Chris Brazil, a 6 foot 4, 200 pound, 200 pounder who had over a thousand receiving yards last year in the SEC and runs a 43 7. So they're. And after getting Tearoa McMillan last year, so they're doing all the right things. But at the end of the day Bryce Young's going to go prove is he worth one of those deals or are we going to be in the quarterback market in 2027?
Dan
All right, let's move on to this Madden. Kevin, what do you expect from tj Parker over his first two seasons in Buffalo, did the Bills do enough on the defensive line with the addition of him and Zane Durant? We're going to mention with this one,
Mensch
Parker is going to be interesting. I love that they signed Bradley Chubb, but he's a guy who's had a hard time staying healthy. I think opposite of Greg Rousseau, that that's going to be, you know, I think it's going to be Chubb, Parker. I think Chubb's the starter now. The contract they signed, the talent that he has, if he can stay healthy. But Parker's going to rotate in. He's going to play a lot of meaningful snaps right away. I like his ability to stop the run. I think he's going to be a powerful edge rusher, obviously. Obviously high on him. Whether or not he's a starter or a top two guy will be interesting to see. I don't think it will start off like that, but by year two, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the starter opposite Russo and Chubb moves into the number three role. It depends on again, how healthy Chubb stays and how that all works out. I love the addition of the player in terms of did they do enough? This one's tough for me because I think you have to look at it. Bigger picture of Zane Durant's not the answer here, man. Like, I like Zane Durant, Day three defensive tackle. He can be disruptive. That's not the guy that I really am looking at to see if a Bill's defense that gave up over 5, gave up 5 yards per carry last year, 5.1 yards per carry last year is going to be better. The guy I'm looking at is TJ Sanders, who they took in the second round last year and whether or not he can progress and turn into a dude who I thought he was excellent coming out of college, but did not play well last year. They need some of their younger guys to develop, not just the addition of Durant. And honestly, I don't know, man. I love the names up front at Oliver and Dan Walker and TJ Sanders and. And now you like. There's. I like the names up front and I think TJ Parker is a guy who can set the edge for you too. I think he's going to be tough against the run there, but I don't know. They got to play better than they did last year. The names aren't enough. Like there's talent there, but they've got to play at a better level.
Todd McShay
This is a defense that they want power on the power, size, length on the edge, and they want dudes that are going to disrupt and make your life a nightmare between the tackles. Yeah, that's what Sanders was. That's what Oliver is. That's what Durant can be at his best.
Mensch
But he fits their mold, no question.
Todd McShay
Oh, he fits the mold or else they wouldn't have drafted him. Right. But. But it's got to be so disruptive, like a beehive coming at you, that it. It gets. It gets a lion to retreat. I mean, that's essentially what the. The mindset is. We got. We got the, like, lions sitting there and £320 offensive lineman teams trying to run up the gut against you. And we're trying to do it by just in a different way. Instead of gap holding gap like we wanted, we want to unleash a beehive so that it just creates confusion. You're getting stung all over the place, and you just want to retreat. And so they now, you know, they bring in a third, a third guy, you know, that we're talking about right now, and they're just. They're going to want to rotate, keep fresh, and just keep stinging you, you know?
Mensch
Yeah, we'll see this one. I don't know, man.
Dan
Do we have more? Okay, we. All right. This one's from Douglas, and this is an interesting one in terms of 2026. How soon will Todd Monken know whether or not Chador Sanders can develop into a credible starter? And are there certain milestones throughout the season or in season where that evaluation takes place?
Todd McShay
Yeah, I mean, every Sunday, right? I mean, your performance review, if we're going to go corporate on your performance review, is your, is your tape on on Sundays or Thursday night or, you know, Monday night? But I also, like, here's what I know. Here's what I know. Every coach, when you. You get to know a person by tape, when you don't know the person. And so what Monkin has seen from Sanders is based, let's say, 70% off of what he's seen in tape Colorado last year with the Browns. Then there's this element of, I promise you the due diligence and calling everyone and trying to, like, get to really know, you know, but then at the end of the day when you sit down in those meetings and you start to develop a relationship, how is that relationship go? And it's not about, hey, we're buds. Let's, let's go, you know, grab some coffee together or let's, let's Go play around in golf. It's. Is he picking up what I'm saying? Do I trust him? Do I trust him off the field? Do I trust him driving behind the wheel? Do I trust him? The maturity? Do I trust him in interviews? Most importantly, do I trust that if I put an install in, is he going to pick it up and we can just keep this thing rolling?
Mensch
Right?
Todd McShay
Then there's this weird element, man, this Deshaun Watson thing ain't going away for some reason. And in the back of everyone's mind is, remember what he was in Houston. And then I keep going back to was part of what ownership in the hire of Monkin was part of it. Can you get a return on this investment? Because it's right now viewed, and rightfully so, as the worst investment in sports history.
Mensch
Right?
Todd McShay
The money they gave to Deshaun Watson and then subsequently, what happened off the field and on the field in 2024, the product on the field was. Was bad. The off the field stuff is horrific. Worse. Like not worst case, but pretty damn close. And then, and then last year, the injury. So, like, I don't know, I just, I don't want. I'm going in with an open mind that anything could happen. This could be Deshaun Watson's team for a year or for a good portion of it, it could be Shadors. Desean could never get back to anywhere close to what he was. Or maybe this is. Maybe Monken is the right guy too, you know, so I'm fascinated. It's weird because you think of the Cleveland Browns with Shador Sanders, a fifth round pick, and DeSean Watson, like, we're moving on. Everyone is kind of like, like, he's done right. But for some reason, I'm probably more fascinated with what goes on in the Browns training camp than about 28 other teams in because of that.
Mensch
And they've also built their roster around it. Like they've actually got some players now. So now it's like, it's the best shape.
Todd McShay
I can't remember how long it's.
Mensch
It is. It's interesting, man.
Todd McShay
Maybe since we started, quite honestly, like, honest to God, this might be the best roster the Browns have had since we started working in this business in 1999, you know? Yeah, I don't know. We'll see.
Dan
It does still kind of feel like that quarterback's coming in 2027. I don't know.
Todd McShay
But it's still going to be fascinating to watch what happens between now and. And a year from now, right?
Dan
Oh, yeah. It's, it's going to be popcorn. Get your popcorn ready. Let's go to Steve on this one. This one is from SM or. No, this one's from Steve. This one's for Steve. So this is Steve and Steve. Thank you. It seems like the entirety of draft centric media was very critical of the Jaguars selection of Nate berkature at number 56. For Jaguars fans, what would constitute a successful rookie campaign to justify that draft pick?
Todd McShay
No, no. Notice mentioned that he, he, he did a really efficient job with his pronunciation, guy.
Mensch
Yeah. Is that right?
Todd McShay
Yeah, absolutely right. Yeah. But what's the pronunciation? He's efforting. I'll get it to you. Yeah, go on.
Mensch
So a lot of a heavy vibe of. It's not that hard, boys.
Dan
Yeah.
Todd McShay
And the ease in which he just. In Berker, you know. Yeah, I literally looked it up during the other question.
Dan
I was looking it up during the other question. I was like, what is this?
Todd McShay
That. That actually tracks. I believe that also this tracks for
Mensch
you because you, you get. You're like my son Tyler. You get a compliment and instead of just taking the compliment, you turn around and like, so somehow make it less. You know what I mean? Like, you've kind of ruined it by saying, like, you just did it. You could have just told I.
Todd McShay
Because I had a vision that he was like, in the mirror, had, like practice, was getting ready for his. His debut with a new camera.
Mensch
There was a real care factor in this.
Dan
Just, just a natural, I think, by the way, we were trying to figure out where I'm going to land. The fans are going to hate me. The audience is going to just hate my energy. That's all right.
Todd McShay
I think you're going to be an acquired taste.
Dan
That's not a. I mostly am.
Todd McShay
Yeah.
Dan
Usually.
Mensch
Yeah.
Todd McShay
No, I, I honestly do. I think at first, I think it's like anything, like, who's the. Who's the new guy?
Mensch
I don't know.
Todd McShay
I don't like it. And I think over time people will start to understand the dynamic here, and that's fine, too. I'm here for it. Go ahead.
Mensch
Acquire taste. This is great. This first thing I'm gonna say is we'll get into it a minute. I'm not going to run away from how I feel about it, but I would urge Jaguar fans to be patient. Trey McBride from Arizona was a second round pick. He was a 55th overall pick in 2022. In his first season, he caught 29 passes. And I remember thinking, I love this kid. Coming out is he maybe not as good as I thought he was. And then you've seen what he's done since then. He's really taken off and developed in one of the best in league. And I think other tight ends like Elijah Arroyo didn't have the year I thought he was going to have for Seattle last year.
Todd McShay
Watch out this year.
Mensch
I think tight ends need a year, maybe two sometimes, before they really start developing and really start, like, paying off for, you know, where you take them in the draft. So I would. I would beg Jaguar fans to be patient with this pick. That being said, this is a tough one because when you. When the media attention is what it is and I'm in it and you're right, Steve, like it is, the immediate tension here is that this was a massive reach. He is now going to be compared to every tight end that was taken after him on the first, we'll say, two days of the draft. And these are. These are the names. Marlon Klein from Michigan went to Houston. Max Claire from Ohio State went to the Rams. Sam Rausch from Stanford, Chicago, Oscar Delp, Georgia to the Saints, Will Kazmark. There's a lot of names here. Will Kazmark from Ohio State to the Dolphins and Eli Raridan from Notre Dame to the Patriots. If any of those guys, you know, have a great rookie season or blow up or outplay, it's always going to be, we could have had that guy. We could have had Eli Raritan in the third round. But we reach for Bow, Kurt, or my God, I couldn't even say it. We reached for Bo Kutcher at 50, 56. So what are we doing? Like what he's going to be compared to those other tight ends no matter what, going forward now because of how much of a reach it was viewed. If we're looking at this outside of that bubble, what we're really looking for is a guy who can develop into a number two tight end, could be an excellent blocker, a reliable receiver, and it'd be one of the better number two tight ends in the league when you draft him that early. So that's what I would say outside the bubble. But the reality is he's going to be compared to all those other players. And that just comes with going that early when people see you as a reach.
Dan
All right, last question here. This one's from Cameron. Hey, fellas. Hope you're enjoying a little post draft respite. I'm intrigued by the bar and pick for Dallas. Is he a day one starter for the Cowboys? What kind of role do you imagine for him we'll go to Todd with this one?
Todd McShay
Well let's start with this. He's a six, three and a half 240 pounder who ran in the low four sixes who's got long ass arms like 34 plus plus inch arms. Why is that important? Because he is a violent and versatile off ball linebacker who can rush the quarterback and you need that length honestly both positions in coverage the length is an advantage and and even more importantly as a pass rusher, an undersized pass rusher who can help get into guys pads and keep guys, you know this 34 inch left tackle, right tackle guys you know arm length off of him and have like a fair going to Frank D. Feliz. Boys need a hatchet and a hatchet fight. So he's got a hatchet. Okay, that's new.
Mensch
I haven't heard that one.
Todd McShay
I mean he. I could literally do a 40 minute show on Frank D. Felice would have to do it. Quotes Played at Maryland and Michigan, 193 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and 82 pressures. Tells you a little bit about him. He can do it a little bit of everything. His tape was a blast man. He plays the game exactly the way you want him to play. Now what I love about this pick is the Cowboys brought in Dee winters, they've got DeMarvi and Hare overshawn.
Mensch
Overshone. Yeah.
Todd McShay
Yep. And so, so he doesn't have to start. And so if you're asking me is he going to be a day one starter, like I don't know, probably not. But he's going to be a year two starter and he's going to have a role in this defense. And what I also like about what Christian Parker, the new defensive coordinator has done is and he from from what I hear like not weirdly like very, very hands on with Barham and during the, the rookie minicamp and the the limited time they've had so far and OTAs are starting now so because he has a clear vision and his vision is what exactly what it should be in my estimation and that is listen, we know he can do a lot of things. Let's get him right. The thing that he is most natural, has the most experience at and the place that we envision him having the bigger role, the biggest role and that's an off ball linebacker. So right now going into camp, when he goes into camp, he's going to be the third inside linebacker. And so does he work his way to that point? Well Parker, I think, is hoping so and that's why he's working with, I mean, he's working with all these guys. But I think there's a vested interest in whether it's this year or 2027, him being the off ball linebacker, starter and another versatile piece because of that edge rushing ability that the teams are just coveting more so now than they ever have before.
Dan
All right, that's a wrap. Tucker says we got a wrap. So we got a wrap. We'll have overflow.
Todd McShay
I like this. Yep, yep. See how it goes.
Dan
You just point the fingers at the people behind the scenes and then it's,
Todd McShay
you know, you learn for you learn from the golf.
Dan
Yeah, yeah, yeah. For sure. Hands off. We'll put some extra ones in a newsletter next week.
Todd McShay
All right. I, I like the way this thing rolled. Yeah, we've got, we got a couple more shows coming up this or next week as we transition to 2027. Fired up about it. We got a newsletter coming up. If you don't subscribe already, you can go to theringer.com mcshay get all of our scouting reports from this past year's draft. And we're now turning the page towards 2027. And, and on that, on that page, theringer.com McShay scroll down a little bit and you'll see the McShay report. That's where you can click on it. Subscribe. So appreciate everyone's time.
Mensch
