They'Re all big shows, but let's face it, some are bigger than others. Today's one of those bigger ones. New beginnings, Stevie boy. A day of first on tap Today, my first annual appropriately early mock draft. And. And the groundbreaking announcement of our first live roadshow. Just nine days until the first Saturday of college football and 252 days until the first round of the NFL Draft. Mensch. You good? I'm good. Let's rol. Excited, man.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Me too.
Todd McShay
All right, good. You look serious excitement. Like you have that, like, serious tone excited going on. I'm just like giddy. Just. It's gonna.
Mel Kiper Jr.
What about what, though? Were you excited? Are you excited about this. This appropriate early mock draft? Are you excited about the road trip?
Todd McShay
Road trip? You know me.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Road trip? Yeah.
Todd McShay
I mean, if you have. You're asking me what I'm more excited about, right? I'm excited about both. Let's just announce it, right? I'm not big on waiting, you know, I don't have a lot of patience.
Mel Kiper Jr.
You could even wait till today. You couldn't even wait till today.
Todd McShay
I kind of spoiled it, but that's fine. It's on brand. The support has been overwhelming. The growth of this show has been inspiring. It's time to get out in the road. We got to meet some of our friends of the show, right? Here's the announcement. We're going to have our first ever live McShay show on the road and we want you to join us. In fact, we need you to join us or else it'll be embarrassing. Here's the. Here's the details. You ready? I think it's what Steve's nervous about. Today we'll be at Lincoln hall in Chicago. I can't wait. Lincoln hall in Chicago on Wednesday, September 10th, first week of college football. After week one into week two. So much to talk about. Okay, tickets go on sale tomorrow, August 15, 10am Central Time. Get in there early, folks. I got a feeling about this. I'm fired up. More information is going to be available, so stick with us. Check in@theringer.com events. Okay, theringer.com events very soon, but that's the deal. All you need to know is live show mention. I still ironing out who the the guest is going to be. If we're going to have one, it's 90 minutes. We'll go. They say we do about 75 of show, 15 of question and answer. I get a feeling the 15 is going to turn into 50. Knowing us. Like I, I want to be there. I want to be present. I don't care how long we go, how many questions are asked, I want to answer them. We'll talk about Chicago sports. We'll talk about anything going on the Midwest. Anyone who's there, questions about us. Is it Ohio State? Is it Penn State? Is it Notre Dame? Is it the Chicago Bears? I'm fired up to talk about all of it, but Lincoln Hall, Wednesday, September 10th in Chicago. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, August 15th, 10:00am Central. And let's face it, men, remember, check the ringer.com events and you'll get more information as, as it comes. And we'll keep updating you here on the show. Right. What are your thoughts?
Mel Kiper Jr.
I'm excited, man. I mean, public speaking, it's going to be, it's going to be interesting for me. But I'm, I'm excited about getting out and seeing some of the faces, meeting the people and really getting, I think we've tried to do this from the beginning, but really getting a feel for what people are enjoying, maybe what they're not enjoying. Let us know. Man, I really want to, you know, really want to get to know our listeners a little bit more.
Todd McShay
Yeah, we're trying to grow this thing, and the only way to grow this thing is with you, our audience. And, and if you're committed enough and you like what we're doing enough to be there, then, then you're one of us and you're part of what we're growing here. So I think it's going to be a blast. And it couldn't come at a better time. Kind of kicking off the football season, NFL college football. Like, we're just getting into full swing that week, right? September 10th. Man, I love Chicago.
Mel Kiper Jr.
I love Chicago.
Todd McShay
Oh, I love Chicago.
Mel Kiper Jr.
I was in Chicago about a month ago. I love going to Chicago.
Todd McShay
Yeah.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Can't wait to go back.
Todd McShay
First of all, like, I'm there for the show, but I don't care if it's LA for the draft. I don't care if it's, if it's mobile. I'm, I'm a foodie. If it's Indianapolis. So, like, we need suggestions. Let's meet some people out there. Like, we're going to be there a couple nights. I haven't even told men. It might be three nights. I don't know. We'll get, get your babysitter.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Here we go.
Todd McShay
All right, so that's that. That's the, the first of the first today. The second of the first is. And I've been, I've been talking about this dating Back to like 2005. I've never had the opportunity to do this. Remember, our show started October 22 last year. We got right in the middle of the season. Wasn't an ideal start, but it's the soonest we could start. After we signed the contract, the ink wasn't even dry. We're like, we gotta go. But this is our first off season, and this is the first time that we've gone through our scouting process with our audience. And I've always said, like, contractually I was obligated at ESPN because I wouldn't do a great grades after the draft. Eight minutes after the draft, let's grade 32 NFL teams. I thought it was preposterous, so I agreed that I would do the way too early mock draft. And so because it's become a thing and because like the, the outpouring for it is, is there every year. And now I was the first to do it at espn and they had the Foresight. And then everybody else started to copy it. You know, now you see 100 way too early mock drafts. Even stole our name, right? Because when they came to me, I was like, well, it's way too early. It's just like, it's too early. And they're like, let's name it the Way Too Early Mock Draft. It's kind of fun. It was. It was kind of a joke internally between us, and we wound up using that for the name. But I always said, and no one was interested because, you know, college football, starting, NFL started. We want to talk about training camps and getting ready for the, you know, week zero and week one of college football. No one was like, no one wanted to take the time, programming wise, to do an appropriately early. How about you give me a couple months? How about you give mention? I time in the lab, study these players, right? And I'm listen, we got a whole nother season of tape. We got a whole bunch of guys that were. We Cam Ward, a year ago at this time was considered like a third, fourth, fifth round prospect, and he goes number one overall. And it happens every year. So the names will change. I'm not saying, like, I now know, but I'm saying it's a much more educated mock draft based off. Based off the time we've had to actually do the work, go to Manning Passing Academy, talk to people there, talking to GM scouts that are getting ready to go on the road, that have done a lot of tape, our tape, most importantly. Okay. And interestingly enough, mensch. And we're getting. We're going to get to the mock draft in just a second. Interestingly enough, there are 14 new names on this mock draft, the Appropriately Early Mock Draft. We're calling it the first annual appropriately early mock draft than there were on May 1st when we released the Way Too Early Mock Draft. So you're telling me that putting in the time with the tape doesn't make a difference? I'm telling, like I'm telling you, it's not the case. That's why we're doing this process. So I want everyone to know real quickly before we dive into this mock draft. While we're fired up about the live show, we're also fired up about the newsletter. Okay. And it's continuing to grow and we're kind of weaving and adapting as we go. I talked to you a lot about it in the last show. There's going to be a lot more. Like, if we're coming into your inbox, it's with big ticket items And. And it's with stuff that's important, that's pertinent. If I'm in your inbox, I've made a commitment to you. I'm not waste. I'm trying not to waste your time. It's there for a reason, and it's coming up like the man, the Manning. Archie talking about Arch and saying that he's going to be back in 2027. I have insight that I wanted to share to that story. So we. We posted that right away. It's going to be a lot of that, too. So it's gonna be like stick and move guerrilla warfare in the newsletter. Okay. Stuff that you like. If. If you love this stuff, and I know you do, if you're watching or listening to us right now on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, wherever you get your podcasts, you're gonna want to read this stuff because it's. It's. In addition to. It's more detailed. And you're gonna have all the mock drafts, all the rankings, all the things you've come to love. And by the way, we've got an ex, like an extravaganza coming up leading up to college football. We're gonna go through the top teams, we're gonna, like, we're gonna break it down from every different angle. And. And next week, it's going to be the. The quarterback tiers. Okay?
Mel Kiper Jr.
Three shows a week in the next two weeks, right? We're going to three shows next week, right?
Todd McShay
Is it. I don't even know. I'm just gonna sit here and wait for you guys to jump on. I'm gonna be ready to go. We.
Mel Kiper Jr.
I mean, can you imagine if we try to squeeze all that into two shows? We'd be here for three hours. Dan would be pulling his hair out. So we're gonna go three. We're gonna go three next week.
Todd McShay
Okay? So I'm. I'm committed to all of this, and I'm committed to the newsletter, and I'm committed to keeping these shows at a reasonable pace for you. And that's why I'm not going to go on and on and on about everything else. Now for the mock draft, and please continue to support us. Mench does a better job than me, but I'm just going to say, like, subscrib, hit that five star. It's like, you know, Fletch, five star.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Yeah.
Todd McShay
Confess Fletch, the new.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Leave a comment. Thumbs up, thumbs down, all that. Oh, I want to see a new Fletch. I love the old Fletch.
Todd McShay
Confess Fletch Interesting tidbit. That's why I quoted it. I mean, he quoted. But every time he gets out of an Uber, he just jumps out. No matter what was going on sometimes. One time he jumped out in the, in the tunnel coming out of Boston and, and was like five star, you know. The reason I laugh about it is because actually a good portion of that was filmed before I moved here in Cohasset, Massachusetts, where I live. So full circle, I mentioned 14 new names on this mock draft appropriately early. Here we are on August 14th compared to what we had on May 1st. New quarterback at number one. Mendoza's in, Allers out.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Interesting.
Todd McShay
All new names, picks 25 through 32. So let's roll it. Here we go. Right. Cleveland Brown. Oh, and by the way, because this.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Is always the thing, you're gonna get killed.
Todd McShay
My good friends at FanDuel who keep the lights on here and have been unbelievable to us every turn, every time I ask a question, every odd I'm looking for. We worked in conjunction with the draft odds. Like they, they're an awesome partner and they came up with what their, their odds are to essentially win the super bowl, you know, and we just flip flopped that and created the draft order. So don't yell at me. Don't yell at FanDuel. They're not doing anything wrong.
Mel Kiper Jr.
They'll probably, they'll probably listen. They probably won't have any problems with it. You'll be fine.
Todd McShay
So Cleveland Browns have the number one overall, overall pick. And like, listen, here's the deal. Shador played great in week one of the preseason. There's a lot of hype and talk about all of that. You still got Flacco and Pickett and Dylan Gabriel, none of which played in that, in that in the first preseason game. But if they're picking at one overall, clearly none of it's working at quarterback. And probably there's a new head coach and probably a new general manager. We're not rooting for any of this. I'm. I just have to work off the information. And so if they're picking at number one, I'm going with quarterback here and I'm going instead of Garrett Nussmeier with Cade Clubnik Kubnick. I see some, I see upside in him with the mobility, having seen him in person at the Manning Passing Academy, the way he's built, seeing his, like his. Honestly, some little things like who's sitting there at the end of practice in the 50 yard line picking Peyton Manning's brain, watching him relay to the High school kids, the young kids in camp, there's just, there's something. Some guys have it and Nuss Meyer's got it. I'm not saying he doesn't. I'm saying, like, well, Nuss Meyer's more polished, take some risks, throw some interceptions, but more like refined and polished. Pro passing game. Grew up son of a. An NFL quarterback, NFL quarterback coach. Now the offensive coordinator of Tyler Shucks in the New Orleans Saints. So he's been around the game his whole life, and I love him. And we'll get to him in just a few picks. I, I absolutely love Garrett Nussmeier. I, I do start to wonder, like, there is that tendonitis in his knee, something I didn't know about, something I talked about when I watched the LSU tape. I, I said it's rare to see a quarterback kind of wear down as the season progresses, and you have to start to wonder was that, was that part of it? I thought it was. Well, their run game sucks and everything's on his shoulders, and I think that was part of it. But, so there's some more digging and like I said, another year of tape combine, all star games, medical, psychological, character, all those things will be just poured into in the next, I don't know, nine months or whatever it is. But as it stands right now, I think Kate Klubnick is my, is my leader in the clubhouse, and I'm fired up to see what he's going to do at Clemson this year.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Yeah, I've got no beef. I mean, I, I'm, I'm a Lenore Sellers from South Carolina guy, but that's, that's a big projection right now. Let's see how he does in the second year we'll get into. I'm sure he's going to pop up here soon, but I like Club Nick, and it feels like he's on a roll, right? It feels like there's some momentum there, that he's a guy that's, you know, started to play well as the season progressed. And I think he's a guy that's, that he can carry that over from one season to the next. You look at the supporting cast, I think he's primed for a great year. I don't, I don't hate it. And look at that, that touchdown, the interception ratio last year, 36 touchdowns, six interceptions. Look, every quarterback gets away with bad decisions. You know, I get all of that. That is a number that sticks out to me, a 6 to 1 touchdown to interception ratio. You'll look at all the starts he'll have at that time, at that point, how seasoned he'll be. I have Clubnick of the same grade of sellers. I have sellers just ahead of Clubnick, but the same grade. I like the pick. Browns fans are losing, are losing their minds. Losing their minds.
Todd McShay
Yeah. And they're, I mean I think it's been. This would be the organization's 11th quarterback drafted and fifth in the first round in the last 20 years.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Not to mention the move they made for Watson. I mean you look at those, all.
Todd McShay
The assets and I think just one, one playoff appearance in that, in that span too, makes sense. All right, let's just rip through by fives. Okay. Because I, this is not. And I want people to understand like I'm not sitting here like training camps going on right now. People are watching Hard Knocks and watching games like this. This is much more tailored to. And I'm getting texts from all I told you Rosillo's texting me the other night. I'm getting texts from analysts who are getting ready to go out in college football season like who are the guys in round one, who are the quarterbacks, who are the top defensive players, who are the wide receiver? So like I think it's, to me this is more tailored, right, to who are the college stars. We all, we go into the season and everyone just ask their agents, everyone's got a first round grade, he's going to be a high draft pick. And I, you watch some of these broadcasts and you're like, well, like there's only 32 picks. And, and I'm telling you right now, some of these guys will are really great players and maybe their second third round picks when it's all said and done. But I think it's important right before we ramp up as we're ramping up to right before we start the season, like here are the guys that I truly believe have a chance to be first round picks. If they're not, then we're talking about day two, you know, like these are the dudes. Okay. So we talked about Kate Clubnik, number one to the Browns. New Orleans Saints according to FanDuel. And in the reverse order, New Orleans Saints would be picking it too. I don't think that they pull the, the trigger on Tyler Shuck after one year as a rookie. I think there's going to be some ups and downs. We'll see if he wins the starting job. I think Kellen Moore believes in him though. Okay. And I spent a lot of time with Tyler down in Thibodeau, Alabama for, for the Louisiana.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Right.
Todd McShay
Louisiana, sorry for the, yeah, you get me in a lot of, I would have got myself in for the Manning passing academy and like the relationship, you could tell it's growing and this is going to be a work in progress. It's not going to be a year one splash. I don't think think but I think there's going to be growth. I, I went with TJ Parker, the edge rusher from Clemson there and, and to me, like we talked a lot about Parker. You can go back and watch our show with Clemson, the defensive prospects we did. I, I think his like power translates to the NFL and this dude, whether it was Virginia, Pittsburgh, Florida State, like I said, like burned into my brain some of the individual pass rush moves where he's just plowing guys, standing him up, driving them back, knocking them on their ass and getting to the quarterback. And so I, I think you're going to see growth there. I've got TJ Parker at number two, Spencer Fanu from, from Utah, offensive tackle going number three to the New York Giants.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Hold on, let me just circle back really quickly because I want to give you an opportunity to answer what I think some people are going to ask. They're going to look at you and say, oh, the Browns are going to give up on Shador after one year, but not Tyler Schuck because Tyler Shuck's your guy. Can you explain why that was? Why you looking at that a little bit different of why the Browns might go quarterback and the Saints wouldn't?
Todd McShay
Shador. Shador was a 5th round pick.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Right? I agree.
Todd McShay
Didn't look in the draft room and listen like I, I, I hadn't a late first, early second round grade on Shador. So I think there's a misconception that like I didn't like Shador because I gave the honest answers to what was going on behind the scenes. Starting in January at the combine, I, I did an interview with a couple teams in the top 10 and turned them off by my attitude and not caring what they thought of me. Chador did that. I just reported what general managers and people in the league were talking about. I still, I could have then been like, you know what, I'm all set, I'll give him a third, I'll put a fifth on him. I didn't because I believe in the young man like I truly do. I'm watching the game the other day and I'm thrilled. I'm pulling for Shador. I also love when, when guys get kicked in the face and turn around and be like, all right, next round, let's go now. I think that's, that's what Shador is doing. He's not getting a lot of round one reps in practice and he rolled in there with the confidence that you need to have. I don't care if a fifth round pick. I don't care as a second quarterback drafted by this organization. I don't care how little everyone in the league believed in me. You think Tom Brady did? Tom Brady walked into Robert Kraft's office and said, I'm the, I'm going to be the best pick your organization has ever made in the sixth round. 199 overall. Shador was fifth round, 144 overall. Okay, so I'm pulling for Shador. I love, like this. I do. But I don't know that everyone in that building is pulling for Shador the way that you should be and the way that you would be had you spent a, or that, that 33rd pick or whatever it was in the second round on him. Okay, so that's that to me is the difference. Good question. Valid question. I'm glad I was able to answer it.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Quick, quick, follow up. If the Saints are picking first, would they take Klubnick? Do you think that highly of Clubnik? That if the, if the order was flip flopped, if Kubnick still on the board, would the, would the Browns take him?
Todd McShay
I mean, they absolutely could.
Mel Kiper Jr.
I mean, with the. I'm sorry, with the.
Todd McShay
Yeah, with the Saints. No, I, I hear you. And, and I thought about that. Yeah, but, but they drafted Shuck early in round two.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Right.
Todd McShay
And it's a, it's a new regime. There's obviously a lot of personnel gaps. I think that's the difference.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Okay.
Todd McShay
I think. And, and, and here's the other. And I thought about this. I'm glad you brought this up. And it, it shouldn't have taken me two questions to actually get you this answer. I did think about this when I was writing this. Kellen Moore ain't going anywhere. Right.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Point Kellen.
Todd McShay
Like that's going to be year two. Expected to be some up ups and downs this year. Stefanski, if they lo. If they're picking number one overall like ownership. Ownership has owned rightfully. So the DeShawn Watson error. But that bottom another year. I don't know that it buys them picking one overall next year. So. So with a new regime, once they want, they want their new guy. So if it was club Nick at one or if they're sitting at two. It's Sellers or Nussmeier or Club Nick if he's there. I think this would signal a change. And, and the new regime typically wants to come in and draft their quarterback. So that, that hopefully explains the reasoning there.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Yeah. To be clear, I agree with you.
Todd McShay
I just felt that there might be.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Some pushback and I understand that. I understand why people might have questions about that. And I thought it was a good opportunity for you to explain yourself. That's all I'm doing.
Todd McShay
Oh, I appreciate it. Men. When you have my blind spots, you usually do. All right, so Giants at 3. Spencer Fanu from, from Utah. I, I can get into. You know, they've got a couple of offensive tackles off three offensive linemen set to be free agents next year. Okay. Include including Jermaine Illuminor, Evan Neal and Greg Van Ruten. Okay. Andrew Thomas is coming off the Liz Frank. Like, I think that offensive line's got a chance to be a lot better. What are you shaking your head at?
Mel Kiper Jr.
I just love the, I'm, I'm like, I'm, I'm in awe of the fact of all the work you're doing here and it's good, it's, it's great. This is very fun to me. This is ridiculously fun. But all the work you're doing on these team needs.
Todd McShay
I mean, you really went in and.
Mel Kiper Jr.
It'S, it's August 14th and you're looking at team needs, man.
Todd McShay
It's.
Mel Kiper Jr.
I'm in awe.
Todd McShay
I'm impressed. Look at this tan. I can only sit on the beach so long. Marcus Bile they drafted by the way. Marcus Bow is having a good camp. It's our guy from Purdue. If he gets a little stronger, I think there's something there. All right. Anyway, but, but Fan is your guy, so I'll give you a chance in a second. But he, my goodness, does he move jets at 4. I had with Garrett Nussmeier, okay. Like, he doesn't have the Drew Aller size and, and necessarily the army. He doesn't have the dizzying athleticism of, of, of Sellers. And obviously the medical now is going to be something that's brought up a lot, but hopefully it's, it's a non factor. Okay. But what I see out of him is accuracy, timing, a belief in what he's doing, knowing when to get the ball out, confidence, like beyond competitive, competitive level that is just like rare. I just, I, I, I believe in Garrett Nussmeier. And then number five, Caleb Downs, who I could argue is the best prospect in this class. He's a safety and he's probably not going to burn like a 4, 3, 2. So it's going to be tough for him to be in the top two or three picks with all these quarterbacks and with some edge rushers and with some. This is a good edge rushing class. I could tell you already right now in August. This is a damn good quarterback class and I'm not just talking first round, I'm talking deep. This is a damn good edge rushing class with a chance to rise. Like there's some guys like Patrick Payton at lsu. We'll get to Harold Perkins as an off the ball linebacker. They're going to rush the quarterbacks later. Later in this mock there. I think we've got some good names early on for the edge rushers but I think there's going to be some more guys ascending and. And there's some really good offensive tackles, man. And I know you've done the work on those guys. So a safety may fall a little bit even though if you wind up having the grade you have on them now, which to me is equivalent is as good or better than any other player in this class. So those are the picks. Downs would be going to Tennessee at pick number five. Any other thoughts from you?
Mel Kiper Jr.
I think it's gonna be tough for Downs to go in the top five and I, I don't think say that says anything about him. I think safety is going that early is just tough. I think TJ Parker is another guy that we're gonna look back and be like why did he fall? Because he's not. I don't know if he's gonna have that elite testing. We'll see. But again these are guys both him. They're gonna end up on teams and be damn good players. They're just too good. And I would put them where you're putting them based on what we've seen now. So yeah, just to get into Spencer Fano real quick.
Todd McShay
Can we do that? Yep.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Violent, athletic. It's not all clean. It's not all clean. But what that gives you the opportunity to see is when he gets caught in a bad spot, how does he recover? And I remember watching when the jets took Elijah Vera Tucker out of usc. The, the tackle guard. I remember Joe Douglas, our friend who was the GM at the time of the jets talking about what happens when Vera Tucker gets caught out of position. What. How does he recover? And they were so impressed with his ability to recover. Man. I see Fano. And when he, when he's clean with his technique. It is beautiful. But when he does things that he's not supposed to, he still wins. And when you're looking at that kind of a talent, I think I would have no problem taking him in the top five.
Todd McShay
Yeah. All right, so six through 10, let's go through it. Here's your boy. Lenora Sellers, Raiders if they're picking at number six, the Geno Smith thing didn't go that well. Right. And that was kind of my thinking behind this. You got Lenora Sellers there, the mobility. And you still have Geno Smith though. And we've talked about. Tom Brady is going to bring in a quarterback. Right. Perfect. And give him time. And I, I'm going to mention every time I mentioned Sellers name between now and next April or now and next January if he decides to go back to South Carolina, it's going to be with the caveat of I truly believe in this young man and I think he's got a chance to be special. But I also believe he'd be best served and we'll find out. Maybe that changes, but I don't think it will based on what we've seen with The Jaden Daniels 50 something starts in two different places. Bo Nicks FBS record, 61 or 62 starts at Auburn in Oregon and the success they've had early in their careers versus the guys who don't have as many starts. Even Caleb Williams was In the like third, like 34, 35 stars, whatever it was. There's a difference. There's no, there's nothing that like the game experience is critical. Right. And so I, I think that, yeah.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Sellers is 20 years old. Yes, 20 years old. I mean he was 19 last year.
Todd McShay
But you look at last year with Vegas, right? Five of their first six picks were on offense and I think they'll be trying to reverse that because they do have to, they do have to be able to deal with guys like Mahomes and Herbert and Knicks in that division. Okay. But they've, there's only so much you can do defensively if you don't have a quarterback that can at least keep up with those guys. And so I, I think this, this would be their opportunity. And, and if they're picking at 6 overall, it wouldn't be necessarily that they're going to bridge that gap in one year, but they'd be on track to develop a guy like Sellers properly with Geno Smith with another year. Okay, excuse me, Carolina at 7. I went with the other Clemson defensive lineman who quite Frankly, I, I see a little bit more upside. They're different positions, but I could. If Peter woods, the defensive tackle, interior defensive lineman ascends the way I think he's going to this year, I think he's got a chance to be a top three pick. Okay. But, but I love both Parker and, and Woods. I love both of those guys. They drafted edges. Carolina did Scorton and Princely in in second and third round respectively last year. So now like an interior guy with. And like you add add they've added Brown III and Wharton alongside Derrick Brown. They were just kind of free agent patchwork guys to bring in another like Derrick Brown with Peter Woods. Like I just, I think that had a chance to be special, a special pairing in the interior. Miami at Nate. I went with Kaden Proctor. Okay. The offensive like that offensive line's still a mess. I, I'm worried about Miami this year, but this isn't the show to start doing that. But they've got Patrick, Paul and Austin. Austin Jackson penciled in his starters. Like I, I would be worried if I'm a Dolphins fan about that offensive line. Proctor had that shoulder injury last year. Some ups and downs, but my goodness, 6, 7, 3, 370. He's just a big dude who moves pretty well for that size. Then you got number nine Chicago Bears Keldrick Falk, edge rusher from. From Auburn. Again productive last year. I think he's another guy who's going to take that next step and I know this NFL teams love six six, two, eight, eight frame like and. And he's doing it with talent now if he gets another off season of refinement, agility work, upper body power. I'm excited to see what, what Falk does for Auburn this year. Auburn's got a chance to be kind of sneaky good this year. We'll get to that as we do our whole extravaganza Both on the McShay Report. Go Google it and subscribe please. And also on this show and and then finally, number 10 Seattle Seahawks. I'm with Caleb Banks. More I watch him, the more I like this dude, man. And I know that, you know Jaron Reed was resigned but he's not getting younger. They need a young difference maker. Put him, you know, you got like that immovable force with Byron Murphy who they drafted. Now get a guy who can, who can penetrate and disrupt. So that rounds out my top 10 here. So is that three.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Yeah or no? That's two defensive tackles in the top 10, by the way. I love that. I I think both those guys are worthy of that kind of, that kind of talk right now.
Todd McShay
And I feel like here's the graphic. You know what? I'm just going to rip through these. Right. Jordan Tyson, big wide receiver, kind of got that Debo stuff. Versatile, really good after the catch and strong. You got Mateo Oeongole from Oregon, who's Mention's guy, the edge rusher. I watched a little bit of tape to catch up on him because I hadn't when we did the top defensive players. And as always, Mench is right. Like this guy can flat out fricking play. Okay, then you got, you got Lomu, the. Caleb Lomu the, the other offensive tackle from Utah might be a little rich, but I think, I think, I think the Colts could be looking at along the offensive line and, and as you've talked about, I think, I think Fanu is, is probably while not fully polished and his upside's amazing. I think this guy's a damn good football player too. So the Cowboys at 11 with a wide receiver in Tyson from Arizona State. The Browns with that second pick take Uyangalay for the Oregon edge. The Colts taking an offensive tackle in Lomu, Antonio Williams, wide receiver who's not the biggest guy, but he's fast, he's explosive, he's a playmaker. I think he and Klubnick are in a monster year. Then Fernando Mendoza steps in.
Mel Kiper Jr.
How about that?
Todd McShay
And it's too rich. I get it. And I don't see him on tape right now. That Cal tape. I studied I as the 15th best player in the draft, but I see the potential to get there. And this is all about projection at this point. I'm fired up to see the mobility combined with his arm and what he can do in that offense. And, and I know right now Signetti's sitting there in Bloomington and I know people are close to the program and I'm going to get texts and phone calls and what are you doing? You're like, this is what not what we need right now. Inflated head and all that stuff. Mendoza is not that kind of guy. Like, he's grounded. He knows what he's got to do to get to this 15th spot. And then Francis Moago, who I think is, I mean, just a massive monster guy who I, I watched him and I, I see inconsistencies. Top heavy at times. But, but my goodness, they, you know, the good Lord only makes a handful of them every year and he's one of them. So that rounds out my top 16 Mensch. Take it Wherever you would like.
Mel Kiper Jr.
I like it, man. I mean, you're going with a lot of the guys that I like. It's interesting that you ended up going. I think they're very close. Jordan, Tyson, you took, you ranked ahead of Antonio Williams. I don't know if that's team fit or that's how your board actually lines up. It seems like it's probably how you're.
Todd McShay
They'Re very similar grades. I'm glad you mentioned that. Think about Dallas and how badly they wanted a big receiver, a physical receiver. Yeah. And how badly, you know, they, they were hoping to get Teto and McMillan. Right. And so I, I, it was, it was kind of that, that was the tiebreaker for me, if I'm being honest. Okay.
Mel Kiper Jr.
I have Tyson ahead of Williams on my board. But again, we talked about this in our summer scouting series. Tyson has some ball skill issues. I want to see him catch the ball a little cleaner this year, but I think he's the better receiver for me because of the route running. I have, I love both the tackles you took, by the way. Kaden Proctor, who was the top 10 guy, I think he took him eighth. And then Lomu from Utah. Utah has the two best offensive tackles in the country. In my opinion, Lomu is the, is it. Lomu is a red shirt sophomore. He went over. The reason that Fano starts at right tackle is because Lomu came in and said, I'll take left tackle. You go over to right tackle, big guy. Because that's where Fano started and they moved him over to right tackle. To me, Lomu is, is. I started watching him early on in the season. I was like, he's got something to him. He's pretty good. Maybe in a couple years we'll see. And then by the end of watching his tape, I was like, this kid could play now. I mean, he could go now. And he is, for a taller guy, does a pretty good job with his pad level with his footwork. He is. I actually think he's more fundamentally sound than Fano is right now. Maybe not as athletically gifted, but he's right up there, man. He can move his feet. I think the two best offensive tackles are in Utah now. It'll be interesting to see if Lomu, he'll be a two year starter at that point. Maybe he goes back for another year. So it'll be interesting to see how that all unfolds.
Todd McShay
Yeah. And I, I think, I think looking at this class, right. I'm not as high on Drew Aller as some others.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Me, me neither.
Todd McShay
I think that wide receiver group for Penn State is going to be better. And by all accounts, like talking to people that are in the know, they've been really impressed. I don't think the wide receiver group for Penn State was as bad as the reputation was last year. And you get the young man who's transferring to Ole Miss, I bet you he's gonna have a better year. I can't come up with his name right now. I think it's an aller problem and I'm excited to see the growth in his game. Throwing to receivers on time, running away from him down the field. He's got a big ass arm, he's not very mobile, but somehow he competes and he picks up first downs and he moves around, does all that stuff. He's big, he's got all the, he just looks the part. And they won a lot of games, but can they win the big games and can he be more devastating in the passing game? Can he be more like on time, balls out, lead receivers? I told you, it's a visualization thing with him. I'm not saying he can't. I'm saying he needs to this year. So that like, if you said like one of the five things that you're, you're most interested or intrigued, excited to see, however you want to phrase it, one of them would be does Aller take that next step in his progression as a passer? Visualizing, anticipating, throwing the receivers, posts, post corners, right? Those types of throws down the field, leading them, dropping it in. He's phenomenal. Receiver, comeback routes out, kind of, you know, curls, stationary guys. It's when guys are running away from him, even like in breaking, he's okay. It's guys running away from him. Even in the flats, he struggled throwing the running backs. So that to me is going to be fascinating. But there's still four quarterbacks, right? Going in my top top 15.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Yeah, I don't hate the Mendoza thing either though. I think there's going to be some fans in Pittsburgh who think that Will Howard's the answer right now. And so they're kind of surprised that they're going to go out and get another, another Big Ten quarterback.
Todd McShay
He's been dinged up in the preseason, so we don't really.
Mel Kiper Jr.
I know, I know.
Todd McShay
We don't really know.
Mel Kiper Jr.
But yeah, listen, it's that time of the year. If a guy has a good preseason game or you see a couple clips on X or YouTube or whatever, you're starting to think that this guy's the next guy.

Todd McShay
All right, let's go through the next bunch, you guys. Okay. Arizona sitting at number 17. I gave him running back Jeremiah Love. Best back in the class coming out of Notre Dame. I would put him in the. I think when you're making your list of top five, top six guys in Heisman. By the way, there's a quarterback battle in Notre Dame. I talked to someone two days ago after our show. Hold the brakes, everyone. On the CJ car thing. This Menchie cat's playing well.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Yeah.
Todd McShay
It's good problem to have good problem. Yeah.
Mel Kiper Jr.
But.
Todd McShay
But regardless, Jeremiah Love, like that offense is going to run through him. Poetry in motion, man. Big back, light on his feet. I, I just, I, I love the way he plays. And you look like Arizona. Yeah, they could go wide receiver here. You know, Dorch and Zay Jones are set to be free agents. Offensive tackles another area they could look at with Jonah Williams being a free agent. But you look at the running back, James Conner. How. How long can he do this as a bruising back? He's. He's going to be 31 years old next year. Trey Benson and Michael Carter combined for fewer than 100 carries last year. So this, that could be a spot where the first back comes off the board wherever Arizona is picking. Then I went Jermaine McCoy, cornerback. Great news on McCoy. First practice was yesterday or two days ago. Men.
Mel Kiper Jr.
I can't believe that.
Todd McShay
For those of you who don't know, I, I know he had an ACL tear in January. Working out January. What the hell's going on with modern medicine?
Mel Kiper Jr.
But he's back in, let's, I guess eight months. Isn't that crazy? I guess I didn't think we'd see him till the middle of the year. And that was just. I'm not a doctor. I mean, obviously I'm not that smart, but doctor, not even close. But I was. I never thought that I would hear about him practicing at this point.
Todd McShay
But that's breaking news, man. That was this week. Okay. And so Vikings have a patchwork group cornerback Like I could see them going, McCoy if, if he reached. And I know we've talked about this tape, he had a couple games, it wasn't all that pretty, but like his, his tape shows the, the tools, the skills, the speed, the, the burst, the explosiveness, the fluidity that you look for. And I think he's the best cornerback coming into the year. Assuming he gets back to close to 100%. Then I get Denver at 19. Anthony Hill, versatile linebacker, really good pass rusher a year ago, flies around again. These off the ball linebackers, I'm not saying, you know, mark them down, etch him in stone, that they're going in round one. I don't know that there's any locks to go in round one, but I think Hill's gonna have a big year for that. Texas defense. Reuben Bain, betting on his potential, betting on the fact that that Florida game where he had that soft tissue injury in his leg, that, that slowed him down. And the tape wasn't the same last year. Still good, still flashes. But 20, 23 as a freshman, he was awesome. Okay, I think Baines, another, another pass rusher I talked about. There's some edge rushers that I think are going to ascend this year and Baines one of them. I had him going to Washington at 20. Okay. David Bailey, Texas Tech, another edge rusher I talked about the other day. Sixteen guys that the, the Matador club.
Mel Kiper Jr.
The.
Todd McShay
I think it was the Matador Club, El Metador Club. Bailey was dipping.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Rip, Mr. Dip and Rip. He's going to beat you around the corner, man. And the other thing I like about him, I think he's 11 career force fumbles. When he gets to the quarterback, he's hunting the ball, he's looking to knock it loose. He's a violent hitter. I mean I like guys to turn the ball over, even at defensive end. Guys that have a knack for separating the ball from the quarterback. He's one of those dudes.
Todd McShay
Then I had a pair of cornerbacks going, okay, so that was the. Bailey was to the Chargers at 21. So Washington had an edge rusher in Bane from Miami, Chargers had an edge rusher and David Bailey from Texas Tech fired up to see what he does in those 16 portal transfers for Texas Tech this year. Then I had a pair of cornerbacks going. Green Bay at 22 with A.J. harris from Penn State. The Rams at 23 with Damani Jackson from Alabama. Okay, then we, we flip over to Isaiah World, the offensive tackle coming in from, coming in from Nevada, 4 year player, 6 8, 316 pounds. Oregon just Oregon, LSU and Texas Tech by all accounts murdered the transfer portal and and world was the was like the premier guy and they obviously needed that with two offensive tackles drafted from last year. So I had Houston taking him at 24 with their offensive line problems. Cam Robinson, Lake and Tomlinson UFAS next year, then Tampa Bay at 25 with your boy Sonny Styles. I'll let you talk about him in a minute. The off the ball linebacker from Ohio State who got better and better each week last year the Bengals at 26 and and the Detroit Lions at 27, both taking Alabama defensive linemen 26 to the Bengals. Interior defensive lineman Tim Keenan the third. And then at 27, the Lions an edge rusher which they did not, they did not attack. This year, hopefully Hutchinson is going to be a full go for the entire season and everything's back to normal. But they got the A&M transfer 65283. Overton had a good year last year. I, I think he's going to ascend as well. That kind of rounds out the into the top 27. Any thoughts on those players and we'll come back for 8, 28 through 32.
Mel Kiper Jr.
You know, I love Sunny Styles. You know the other thing I love, I think we both love this is the when the Athletics Bruce Felman comes out with the Freaks list.
Todd McShay
Yes.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Which he has recently. I got to say, man, that is fun as that list is. And it's. Honestly, it's so much fun to read it about these kids and then what they can do. It's amazing. It's also insightful. It's also helpful.
Todd McShay
Highly.
Mel Kiper Jr.
And when you look at like just to give you something, I'm just gonna read directly from his thing here about Sunny Styles.
Todd McShay
Let me say, as you, as you get ready to read it, it does one of two things for me and I know it does the same for a lot of evaluators. It either puts a stamp on what you're seeing on tape or it makes you say, oh, I gotta go watch this guy or I gotta go watch more of this guy. I didn't realize, I didn't realize he was blessed with these tools.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Or maybe there's a later round guy where you're wondering why he's on everyone's radar because the production's not there, the starts aren't there. And then you go back and you look at Bruce Feldman's list and you're like, oh, that's, that's why he's there, Sonny.
Todd McShay
Bruce is like the he's like the rainmaker of college football prospects, but go ahead.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Yeah, so he just a little phenomenal.
Todd McShay
Guy by the way, but go ahead.
Mel Kiper Jr.
The son of former Ohio State star Lorenzo Styles Senior, who won a Super bowl with the St. Louis Rams, is a remarkable athlete. Six, four and a half, 243 pounds. Todd, I didn't know he's that big. He's a former safety. I didn't, I didn't know he'd gotten up to 243. I thought like 225, 230, 240. Broad jumped 11, vertical jump 40, squatted 675 pounds. His body fat is 10%. He's, he's a little faster. Sile said of Jeremiah smith who hit 23.5 miles per this 0.5 miles per hours this year. My, my fastest one was only 23.2, 23.2 miles per hour on the football field at 243 pounds. A former safety who you know could cover a little bit. And that's what it is. That's we got to do in this league. I think he is since the middle of last year and you started to watch him kind of get it. He's starting to get it. He's starting to figure out how we playing close to the line of scrimmage, starting to get it. This player has been on a, been ascending ever since and I can't wait to see how, how high he can get. I love that you have him in the first round. I, I'm, I think he's got first round talent all day. He's obviously one of the players I'm most excited about in this class.
Todd McShay
Awesome. All right, so that brings us down to 28 by the way. And I mentioned and Dan, Dan picked this up for us. Dan Comer, our main man, right? All new names from picks 25 through 32. You talk about the difference in watching tape, right? So all of these guys from Styles to Keen in the third to Overton to the the remainder. The remaining picks on this list were not in the first one. It was all from watching tape where I'm like gotta Adam or in the case of one of these guys, I'll tell you in a second. Talking to people and, and reaffirming what I had hoped was going on. So 28 Kansas City. I've got Denzel Boston from Washington, big physical wide receiver. To me like that just makes sense, right? They've got speedsters, Xavier Worthy, Rasheed Rice. They need a big reliable dude. I could see them Pulling the trigger on Boston. Drew Shelton offensive tackle. Let's make it clear, not there yet. Share struggles last year. But I just, I think he's going to make a leap like that. Combination of length, agility, flexibility are hard to find. C.J. allen we talk about the, the offensive tackle and edge and quarterback class being strong. There's a lot and I'm not saying any or all of these guys are going in round one, but it's a damn good group of off the ball linebacker. C.J. allen. I don't know if he's on the freak list but. But apparently like he's going to be the next alpha dog. The next great Georgia linebacker is what everyone's saying. You saw some of it on tape. 76 tackles, four pass breakups last year. I, I just look at the Ravens. Trenton Simpson didn't play to the level. Roquan Smith 29 next year. So I plugged in Allen there. I just wanted to get him somewhere late in the first round. Max Claire, this is my you got it Mensch pick.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Love them.
Todd McShay
You, you love them. You love him. So I went with max claire there. 31 going to the Philadelphia Eagles. We talked about the Goddard, right. God, I, I thought they drafted tight end this year early. They didn't go that route. Dallas Goddard, there's been some contract issues with him. Howie Roseman will be interesting to see how that all plays out. But I could see them going with Max Clear 64250 who comes in. He had a team high 51 for 684 and four touchdowns last year Purdue. Now he comes into Ohio State. I think he's going to be the security blanket for first year starting quarterback. Julian saying if saying keeps, keeps, wins, whatever you, however you want to phrase it, that job. Finally the Buffalo Bills there was a last minute change. That's how serious I'm taking this Mensch. I wanted to get Nicholas Singleton the running back in from Penn State. It was an ode to you Mensch. The final two picks, Claire and Singleton, your two guys. But then all of a sudden they, they signed a four year extension with, with Cook and I had to make a change. Right, right.
Mel Kiper Jr.
It makes sense.
Todd McShay
So yeah, so, so Singleton, while I think he's gonna have a huge year, 6 foot 226 caught. He had over almost 1100 rushing yards. 1099. Also 41 cat catches in the passing game last year. I think he's going to be in that, we'll call it 25 to 45 range right in the draft. I think he's got a chance to get there even in. He should run well even even in the. Yes. And should run well even in that rotating role. But they signed Cook four year extension, $48 million. And I was like, just like, I'm not going to put out a mock draft that has, that has a running back round one after that. So I went with Harold Perkins. And this was also late information to me.
Mel Kiper Jr.
I can't wait to hear what you have to say.
Todd McShay
Do you remember Harold Perkins as a freshman in 2023 at LSU?
Mel Kiper Jr.
Yes.
Todd McShay
I legitimately tweeted. It was Twitter at the time. I tweeted out. I think I was that like, I've seen this. This is a top 10 player. He continues to develop like this is like top 10 stuff. Remember that Arkansas game, four sacks, like seven or eight tackles for loss. Like blew up the unblockable. Unblockable. It's rare for a defensive player, a freshman defensive player to like clearly be the best player on the field. So then he comes back to last year in the SEC last year, new coordinator, off the ball, linebacker. More. Asked to do more. Was swimming in it early in the season. Then he suffers the injury against ucl ucla, I want to say late in that game and was out the rest of the season. ACL tear, I believe it was ucla like last week in September or something. I remember it being kind of early and being like. But I also remember watching him being like, oh, he's not the same guy. Like, like misdirection play action. Like he's not sifting through traffic. He, he, like he's. The nuances, the little things he's not doing. He's over his head right now. Right over his skis, I should say. Well, apparently he's been a monster in.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Fall camp and apparently the same things.
Todd McShay
Okay, all right. Second year in the system, gets his responsibilities, still can provide that edge rushing stuff. So like I'm, I'm fired up. He's coming off the ACL and has had a lot of time, just about a full year. And if he plays this year the way I. He could be one of those guys, you know?
Mel Kiper Jr.
Yeah. So this is something that I read that is really interesting. I think that when you talk about Perkins Jr. You have to talk about his frame. First of all, I believe he's listed at 6122 pounds. If he was 6'3 and 255 pounds, we'd be talking about him as a top 10 pick, as an edge rusher. He's that explosive. I really believe that. But at that frame, he's going to have to play off the ball. We also talk about sometimes how injuries actually help players in their development long term. And one of the things that I've read that was really interesting was the defense quarter. Blake Baker, after Perkins got hurt last year, sat down and said, hey, Harold, where do you think you fit best in my scheme? Where do you think you should play? Wherever you want me to play, Coach.
Todd McShay
Okay?
Mel Kiper Jr.
That's what every guy. That's what every coordinator wants to hear. Every coach wants to hear. This guy wants to do whatever's best for the team. And credit to Blake Baker, he said, no, no. Where do you want to play? And he said, I want to play. Star. Star is a hybrid safety position and he has moved a star and apparently fits like a glove. That's.
Todd McShay
That's the reporting because he's in space. He doesn't have. He's not behind all the traffic.
Mel Kiper Jr.
He comes streaming off the edge.
Todd McShay
I'm screaming off the edge.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Matches up with linebackers. It's, it's. It's one of those things you're like.
Todd McShay
Of course, of course.
Mel Kiper Jr.
That would be the. The whatever. And now that's. That's where they're going to play him. We'll see what happens. You are talking about a kind of a tweener player who's coming off an injury, but you're also talking about a dude who's got a lot of good tape, he's got a lot of explosiveness, and now might be where he was always destined to be. I love getting him in the mix. I love that you got him in the mix.
Todd McShay
Nice. Nice. And I love the fact that we're going to Chicago. Yeah, I love the fact we're going to Chicago and we're doing it on September 10th. Okay. And tickets are on sale tomorrow. Mensch, August 15th. Get there at 10am Central. All right, that's 11am Eastern. That's 8am Pacific. I need you there. Mention you. Don't you embarrass me all you want. Don't you dare embarrass Steve and not show up. We're gonna have fun. I can't wait for everyone to be there. The newsletter's out, by the way. It's. It's free. What are we doing? It's free. Go get the mock draft. We get quarterback tiers coming up. We're gonna have breaking news. We're gonna have, like, all sorts of information. And I keep calling it extravaganza, but that's just what it's going to be leading up to college football, NFL and everything else we're doing. But right now if you just go sign up, throw your like email address in there, get on, get part of this, you get a free mock draft you can look at, read everything I wrote in all these 32 players. I'll tell you what man, it's a fun show.
Mel Kiper Jr.
Yeah, these, the mocks are always great. I don't care what mocks are always great. Do them in July, June, August, whatever. They're great.
