Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. I am not your host, Spencer Newharth, but rather your guest host, Phil the Engineer, full legal name. Today we're joined by Spencer Brody, Cal Randall, Nate, Max Riva and Corey. Hey, if you've never heard of Phil's Trivia on Meat Eater Radio Live, you're in for a rude awakening, bucko. Because normally this is a 10 round quiz show with questions from meat eaters 4 verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking. Today, however, this is a ten round quiz show with questions from the world of cinema. That's right, when the mice are away, the cheese will play and there is a prize. Meat eater will donate $500 to the Conservation organization of the winner's choosing. Now you may be asking yourself, why is Phil hosting when Spencer Brody, Randall and Giannis are all here as well? Well, it's kind of a crazy story because last week I was having lunch with Spencer when the movie 127 Hours came up. Spencer, do you mind if I tell this story?
Cal Randall
Go for it.
Phil the Engineer
Okay, well, yeah. You guys know 27 hours?
Nate
Aaron Ralston starring James Franco.
Phil the Engineer
James Franco did Danny Boyle for Based on a True Story. Well, a big boulder fell, got his arm pinned under the boulder. I was Talking to Spencer, I was saying, hey, like, man, that'd be tough to do. I don't know. I think I might just die. I don't know if I could cut my own arm off. And Spencer piped in, and he said he wouldn't have to cut his arm off if he were in that situation. And I said, you know, okay, I'll take the bait. What do you mean? And he told me he would just simply ask the rock to move. And after four seconds of awkward laughter, I realized he wasn't joking. And I said, spencer, rocks are inanimate. They can't move of their own volition. They're lifeless. They don't have ears or a central nervous system required to respond to, you know, this sort of external stimuli. And Spencer just looked me in the eye and he said, don't act like you know them. He said, you fools will never understand them. I'll show you.
Cal Randall
I'll show all of you.
Phil the Engineer
And then he ran out of the office. It was nuts. I called Shelby, and she told me that he packed a bag and said he was taking the next flight to Salt Lake City. Well, anyway, we put out a message to people in Utah who might be able to head down to Canyonlands and look for our guy. Well, we told them just to follow the scent of a burning Casey Musgrave's branded candle. Oh, my God. Be sure to bring a bone saw. But lo and behold, they found Spencer both arms intact, which makes me believe. I think he made a new friend down there. Spencer, congratulations. We're all happy you made it back safe and sound. But amongst all that hubbub, we were scrambling to put a show together. You know, Brody and Randall were busy writing books. Giannis was zip tied to a treadmill, training for his next 500k or some shit. Spencer. So Norm. So, naturally, the responsibility fell to me. I'm sorry.
Cal Randall
Awesome. This week's IFAQ comes from time to happen. It's not that. It's the week before Christmas break, and we have to bank a bunch of podcasts, and I just got my wisdom teeth out, so I didn't have a lot of time to write scripts. Oh, yes.
Phil the Engineer
No, I asked. That's not fair.
Cal Randall
Yeah, that's not how it happened.
Nate
So is this after the wisdom teeth?
Cal Randall
When was it filled? Yeah, it must have been after the wisdom.
Nate
Yes, it was after the opioids. Then explain how was that for you?
Cal Randall
I was. It was pretty fine.
Max Riva
Yeah. Okay. How many did you get out?
Phil the Engineer
I.
Cal Randall
This is a weird story. Three. Three of them. They started digging for the 4th and realized I didn't have a 4th.
Phil the Engineer
Oh.
Cal Randall
And they were looking at a different patient's X ray. I'm done at that dentist.
Phil the Engineer
Drop the dentist.
Cal Randall
I was awake.
Phil the Engineer
Isn't that noise, when they think about awesome. Did you hear it?
Cal Randall
I. I said this to my wife. I was like, can I tell you about it? And she's like, no. But if she would have let me, I would have said it was really satisfying. Oh, God. The noise it makes is. You're like. Cause you can't.
Max Riva
You weren't knocked out.
Phil the Engineer
So it's like.
Cal Randall
I was not knocked out.
Max Riva
Did you keep the teeth?
Cal Randall
No. And I forgot to ask that. I went into it prepared to ask that question. I forgot to. So I don't have my wisdom teeth. I have mine in a bag with.
Phil the Engineer
All my elk ivories.
Nate
How'd you find out they were going.
Phil the Engineer
Off the other patient's?
Cal Randall
The doctor came in and admitted it later.
Max Riva
Hey, what a guy.
Cal Randall
We're done going to that dentist now. So I'm about to slack the Boseman channel and say, hey, does anyone have recommendations that aren't this place?
Max Riva
I have one for you.
Cal Randall
Okay.
Max Riva
Hopefully it's not the same one.
Nate
Yeah, I need a dentist, too.
Corey
I got about 10 years, but I have fantastic teeth jeans, so I don't need it.
Cal Randall
We also had a dentist win trivia one day, and I don't remember who that was, so maybe he's a dentist. Yeah, the guy who's killed like 10 mountain goats. Oh, I thought you were gonna say patience.
Phil the Engineer
No, no alliance.
Cal Randall
Phil, what else you got over there?
Phil the Engineer
Today's IFAQ comes from Tyler Rosser. Tyler writes, we demand Phil playing video games on the company dime. There are threes of us. Wow. Thanks, Tyler. Is this a question? No. Is it infrequent? Yeah. Here's a story. After I put out a tongue in cheek call to action on Meat eater radio to write in and demand a meat eater video game stream. Not one, not two, not three, Tyler. But, like, 10 of you wrote it.
Cal Randall
Wow.
Max Riva
10 times.
Phil the Engineer
I know. I just wanted to extend my thanks and tell you not to give up the fight. So I'm here today to make a second tongue in cheek call to action. You guys know that certain type of asshole on Twitter or wherever who will challenge someone to a bad faith debate by claiming that they'll donate money to some charity, you know, if. If they. If they accept the debate, well. Hey, meat eater C suite suits, listen up. I would love to do a 24 hour charity stream to raise money for the Meat Eater Land Access Initiative, I played the game Red dead redemption for 24 hours straight with fun benchmark goals and special guests. Oh, what's the matter? You scared? Do it. Hey, I thought you guys cared about public land around here.
Cal Randall
Phil, Red Dead Redemption has some hunting in it. Yeah.
Corey
Can you kill animals? Digital animals.
Cal Randall
We had a trivia question about it before. There's even a cutaway scene where you catch some poachers and you get to decide what to do with them. One option.
Phil the Engineer
What'd you do with them, Spencer?
Nate
Let him.
Max Riva
Hang him.
Cal Randall
I killed him dead.
Phil the Engineer
Jesus. No.
Max Riva
Second chance?
Cal Randall
No. That's a good idea.
Phil the Engineer
Thank you. Thank you. Well, great. That was fantastic. Listen up. All you listeners have to do is write in to meat eatermeateer.com and ask for it. Then get three friends to ask for it. And then they each get three friends to ask for it. And then I would think in one or two years tops, the name of this company is now Game Beater and Steve's Worst Nightmares come to fruition. So I'm counting on you, the listeners. It'll be a blast. We'll hunt virtual mountain lions, catch virtual channel cats, and live out our cowboy fantasies as industrialization and the western expansion slowly eat away at the last vestiges of our withering way of life. All for a good cause.
Cal Randall
Wow, that's good. How do you raise money in a 24 hour stream?
Phil the Engineer
Well, you kind of create like benchmark goals. Like, so after a thousand bucks, we'll do something crazy, like on the stream, like, you know, I'll take a shot of snake tequila, or we'll make Steve play, or I'll put on. Or, you know, I'll put on a costume or some shit. You know, it's like.
Nate
Well, it's like when people raise money. I'm running a 5K.
Cal Randall
Yeah, I don't know how that works.
Phil the Engineer
It's like a fun run.
Nate
Well, it doesn't. I mean, there's no real logic behind it.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah.
Nate
Just an excuse.
Corey
That's great.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah. Anyway, that's a good idea. There's no housekeeping today.
Corey
I feel like you gave away way too much of our internal process on.
Phil the Engineer
How things get approved that you get.
Corey
Three friends send a lot of challenges to authority.
Phil the Engineer
Well, here's the thing. The Adrian index for this game is a nine.
Corey
Wow.
Phil the Engineer
So our winner should get nine correct answers.
Cal Randall
Four and a half. Are you sure it should be four and a half? Oh, yeah.
Phil the Engineer
Chick goes backwards. I don't think so. I've got faith in you. With that, we're on to our game of trivia. Play the drop me.
Cal Randall
Power resides where men believes it resides.
Corey
That's real good. You're doing great, Phil.
Cal Randall
A Shadow on the Wall. You're in the great game now, and the great game is terrifying. I think Randall and Nate are the two to beat today.
Max Riva
Yeah, I would agree, Nathaniel.
Phil the Engineer
According to his board. Yeah, I'm changing it up a little. New feng shui.
Cal Randall
Okay. Very pop culture of you.
Phil the Engineer
All right, our first three question round is called Common Denominator. I'm going to list three movies, and I need you to write down the actor or actress that appeared in all three. Whoa. Hopefully it'll make you go like that. The first films in this first batch are.
Corey
I love that movie. That was a good one.
Phil the Engineer
Angels in the Outfield, Tropic Thunder, and Dazed and Confused. Which actor appeared in all three of these films? And I'm not trying to fake you out with, like, oh, someone had a cameo, or, like, was on set that day. And it's also not necessarily the lead actor trying to, you know, somewhere in the middle.
Cal Randall
Randall, do you have this one?
Nate
I have an idea. Oh, good boy.
Cal Randall
Brody's got an answer.
Max Riva
No, I'm just like, Angels on the Outfield is stumping me.
Cal Randall
That's a good one.
Phil the Engineer
Again, the films are Angels in the Outfield, Tropic Thunder, and Dazed and Confused.
Max Riva
I thought it was going to be, like, the first cover photo, and I was like, oh, I know that guy.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah, same.
Max Riva
I was like, perfect.
Phil the Engineer
Does everyone have an answer?
Max Riva
No.
Phil the Engineer
No. Okay, okay. Let's talk it out. Let's talk it out.
Max Riva
Simmer down now.
Cal Randall
Oh, you got this, Cal.
Corey
I'm ready to go.
Phil the Engineer
What?
Cal Randall
You have this one, right?
Corey
I have no clue.
Phil the Engineer
He's ready to go.
Nate
Just.
Corey
But I could name an actor that was in two out of the three of these.
Phil the Engineer
Nate, do you have any. Have you seen these movies? Any of these movies? Do you have any favorites?
Corey
I'm ready to move on.
Phil the Engineer
Tropic Thunder is probably my favorite movie, but I haven't seen the other two.
Cal Randall
Easy now. I'm not going to change my answer.
Corey
You haven't seen Dazed and Confused?
Phil the Engineer
Nope.
Nate
Oh, they're.
Phil the Engineer
They're big gaps in mine.
Cal Randall
It probably came out, like, 25 years before you were born, though. Yeah.
Phil the Engineer
Which means one does not give that as an excuse.
Cal Randall
Yeah. So did Cool Hand Luke, like, came out how, 60 years ago?
Phil the Engineer
Have you ever seen it?
Cal Randall
No.
Phil the Engineer
Oh, my God.
Corey
Great one. Great one.
Cal Randall
If you. If. Have you seen Butch Cassidy in the Sundance Kid? No. If you keep asking these questions, you're gonna be real disappointed. It's gonna be. No, no, no. I'm gonna give you a movie list, Spencer.
Phil the Engineer
All right, how are we feeling now?
Corey
Real good, Real good.
Phil the Engineer
All right, let's go ahead and see those answers. If you just want to point your boards at your respective cameras, we have Spencer saying Matthew McConaughey, Riva with no answer. Cal saying Matthew McConaughey. Randall saying Matthew McConaughey. Corey saying Matthew McConaughey. Nate saying Jack Black. Jack Black. Max saying Will Ferrell and Brody saying Ben Stiller. The correct answer is Matthew McConaughey. Left side of the room did very well.
Nate
We didn't get a Robert.
Corey
I made the mistake reading that guy's book. God, it was bad reading it.
Cal Randall
I can imagine.
Corey
I read it. Green lights. Yeah, terrible.
Cal Randall
You read the whole thing?
Corey
I mean, it's like 250 pages.
Nate
I mean, and half of it just says green light.
Phil the Engineer
Texas's own son, Matthew McConaughey recently went viral after he shared his go to tuna salad recipe on the podcast Two Bears One Cave, where he dubbed himself the tuna fish salad master maker. Going beyond the usual suspects like mayo, pickle juice, vinegar. His recipe also includes wasabi paste, Italian dressing, red onion, little mini dill gerkins, crispy jalapeno chips, apples, corn. And the kicker for me is frozen peas, specifically frozen. How do you guys feel about that dip?
Corey
Oh, man, sounds fantastic.
Cal Randall
He also said it needs to sit for 24 hours and then it gets better that part. So there you go.
Phil the Engineer
So the peas would not stay.
Cal Randall
Don't eat that one fresh.
Nate
I would add the jalapeno chips at the end so they don't absorb.
Phil the Engineer
So these aren't. So these aren't like potato chips. They're sort of like crispy fried onions, but. But in jalapeno instead of onions.
Corey
Yep, I'm in.
Phil the Engineer
Anyway, the next batch of films, American Hustle, X Men, First Class and Silver Linings Playbook. Again, the films are American Hustle, X Men, First Class and Silver Linings Playbook, all fairly recent films.
Nate
We, we saw American Hustle in the theaters with my in laws and we walked out. My father in law said I hated that.
Phil the Engineer
I agree with your father in law.
Nate
Well, he said I hate mysteries. And we said there weren't any mysteries. Those were just plot twists. But he was just frustrated by the experience. I think it was over Christmas break a few years ago.
Phil the Engineer
As soon as there's something that he can't track or follow yeah, he. It frust. It makes him upset.
Nate
Yeah.
Phil the Engineer
Okay.
Corey
What the hell is this guy's name?
Max Riva
I'm thinking of the main guy.
Cal Randall
Yeah, I've got it. I've got it down to two people. Can you repeat the question? Phil?
Phil the Engineer
Yeah, yeah. So one actor appeared in all three of these movies. American Hustle, X Men First Class, and Silver Linings Playbook.
Corey
The hell's that guy's name?
Cal Randall
Now, maybe this is a hint, but if it was.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah, I think I know where you're going, Spencer. Maybe there was some purposeful kind of, you know, misdirection going on around here.
Max Riva
Take it easy.
Cal Randall
Okay.
Phil the Engineer
Rethinking.
Nate
No, just going with it.
Max Riva
Yeah.
Corey
X Men First Class.
Cal Randall
What do you got there? I've seen zero of these movies. Neither have I. None of them. They're too recent for Brody. Yeah, I know.
Corey
I've seen two out of the three.
Cal Randall
Okay.
Phil the Engineer
Oh, oh.
Cal Randall
And time's up.
Phil the Engineer
I'm excited.
Corey
I know. I think I know the person. Oh, I just can't. I don't know the name of the person.
Nate
Draw them. Oh, yeah, Spelling doesn't count. Just draw them.
Cal Randall
Randall and I were at the University of Michigan versus Texas Longhorns football game, and Matthew McConaughey was on the field as he normally was. And we were a stadium away, like a quarter mile away. And you could tell that's Matthew McConaughey right there. He. He carries himself and dresses like no one else.
Phil the Engineer
Sure.
Cal Randall
In that 100,000 person stadium.
Max Riva
Oh, I thought there was gonna be like a shining beam on him the whole time.
Corey
There.
Cal Randall
May as well. You seem like an X Man guy. Where does the X Men first class rank in the. The millions of different.
Phil the Engineer
You know what? I'm. I'm not an X Man guy at all, bro. No? No. I'm surprised.
Max Riva
Makane was there at. In Michigan.
Cal Randall
He was there.
Max Riva
Yeah.
Cal Randall
An enemy territory. What does the X stand for?
Phil the Engineer
Xavier. Xavier. Dr. Xavier School for Gift.
Corey
Any more brain busters?
Cal Randall
I'm ready. I'm ready.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah. Yeah. How we doing around here?
Nate
I think we're good.
Phil the Engineer
We're good. All right, go ahead and show me your answers. We have Spencer saying Jennifer Lawrence, crossed out Bradley Cooper. Riva wrote down Jennifer Lawrence. Cal says Jennifer Lawrence. Randall says Bradley Cooper. Corey says Jennifer Lawrence. Nate says Ryan Reynolds. Max says Daniel Spade, definitely an actor. And Brody says Jennifer Lawrence. The correct answer is indeed Jennifer Lawrence. Yes, the Bradley Cooper was in two of those movies with Jennifer Lawrence, but he was not an X Men first class.
Cal Randall
The question I was going to ask Is, if it was a woman, would you say actress, or would you just say actor? And I'm glad Reva talked me out of asking.
Nate
Yeah, she couldn't have won best actor for any of those performances by the standards of the Academy.
Phil the Engineer
Actor. Actor.
Corey
That. That.
Max Riva
Is that a football movie?
Corey
No.
Cal Randall
Silver linings. Playbooks.
Corey
Like, she's talking about getting rid of the microwave. That was fantastic. Thank God for me, I think, was.
Phil the Engineer
The line, everyone's got a great. A big accent.
Max Riva
Go home and watch all these.
Phil the Engineer
Yes. On top of her archery skills that she put on display in the Hunger Games franchise, Lawrence also skinned and gutted a real squirrel for her breakout performance in the 2010 film Winter's Bone. Quote. I should say it wasn't real for PETA, but screw PETA, she quipped in a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone. And surprise, surprise, PETA responded, quote, as Henry David Thoreau said, the squirrel you kill in jest dies in earnest. When people kill animals, it is the animals who are screwed, not PETA. And one day, I hope she will try to make up for any pain she might cause any animal who did nothing but try to eke out a humbling existence in nature.
Cal Randall
Wow. I don't think that would talk me out of gutting a squirrel.
Phil the Engineer
I don't think it would. Know. I don't. They didn't for her.
Cal Randall
You know, a lot of people lump like, Hunger Games in with, like, Twilight, but I don't think they're even close to the Hunger Games. Anyone in this room could enjoy Hunger Games. It's good. Franchise.
Phil the Engineer
All right.
Corey
Woody Harelson's in in. That guy's awesome.
Cal Randall
Yeah.
Phil the Engineer
Last group of films. Here we go.
Max Riva
Hopefully it's easy.
Phil the Engineer
First movie is Road to Perdition.
Cal Randall
Well, I've never heard of that one.
Phil the Engineer
The Color of Money and Pixar's Cars. Cars Threw me for a loop there, bud.
Cal Randall
Huh?
Phil the Engineer
Road to Perdition, The Color of Money and Cars.
Corey
I don't know, Phil.
Cal Randall
Was this fun for you to make?
Phil the Engineer
It was. It was a lot more work than I was expecting, so it just made me respect you and all the other guest hosts more.
Cal Randall
Oh, thank you.
Nate
I know I've talked about the Road to Perdition on Trivia before, and if I remember correctly, all of my references for the actors in that film were wrong. I believe you corrected all of my.
Corey
I think I do remember this. I think I know who you're talking about. There's just no way I'll remember his name.
Max Riva
I was with. I was with Giannis last weekend, and he's got an upcoming trivia. He's hosting a game or whatever. He was writing down trivia questions the whole weekend. Oh, that's a good trivia question. So hopefully I'm on that episode and I'll just.
Cal Randall
There you go. That's the way to do it.
Nate
Well, now that we know that you will be kicked out of your cheater after all.
Max Riva
Oh, I'm not. My name got cleared.
Cal Randall
My name got clear.
Phil the Engineer
Note to himself, Max is right.
Corey
Pre and cleared this guy's.
Cal Randall
That's the way to write an episode. A lot of people ask me how long it takes to write an episode, but I don't have a good answer because a lot of times I just think of something and I put it in my phone, write it down, and then it winds up in a script later on.
Phil the Engineer
All right, one more time. The movies are Road to perdition, the color of money, and Cars. One actor or actress was in all three of these movies.
Cal Randall
Have you seen all of these, Phil?
Phil the Engineer
I have, yeah.
Cal Randall
Rank them.
Phil the Engineer
I. I have not seen Road to predition in a long time, but at the time it that I did see it, I loved it. So I'd say that's one color money, two cars, Three. Probably the order I just put them in, Maybe that was subconscious.
Cal Randall
Star in a movie.
Corey
I like the other Hitman.
Phil the Engineer
The.
Corey
The villain Hitman and road to tradition.
Cal Randall
You gotta stop giving away details about the movie, like you might jar someone's memory.
Corey
Well, you want to know what I think? Color of money.
Phil the Engineer
I do. Yeah. Please.
Cal Randall
Yeah.
Phil the Engineer
There are people.
Cal Randall
Yeah. Like what? Yeah, just put mater.
Max Riva
Oh, I was gonna put Lightning McQueen.
Nate
Larry the Cable. Did you see my board? Sorry, Phil, I just messed with this wire.
Phil the Engineer
That's fine.
Corey
You ready?
Phil the Engineer
Just making sure we're good. Yeah. Oh, yeah. How we doing? We good? I think we're gonna call it. All right, go ahead and show me your answers. We have Spencer saying Owen Wilson, Reva saying mater. Cal saying Paul Newman.
Max Riva
Don't even know who that is.
Phil the Engineer
Randall saying Paul Newman.
Cal Randall
Who just said they don't know who Paul Newman is.
Max Riva
Not me.
Phil the Engineer
Corey saying Tom Hanks, Nate saying Owen Wilson. Max saying oh for three. Yep, he's right. And Brody saying Paul Newman. The correct answer is indeed Paul Newman.
Corey
You know, I wasn't gonna put any fantastic salad dressings.
Phil the Engineer
Yes.
Cal Randall
Go to the grocery store.
Max Riva
Oh, that Newman. Yeah, I don't like his ranch. So that explains it.
Cal Randall
Is that actually him?
Phil the Engineer
Yes, it is. Yeah.
Cal Randall
Oh, I did. I thought that was just a coincidence. He said that that was the round.
Phil the Engineer
When he was still alive.
Corey
Sorry, I'm ruining Phil's script here.
Max Riva
Phil.
Phil the Engineer
In contrast with Jennifer Lawrence, Paul Newman actually had an obituary published by PETA following his death in 2008 titled Paul Newman remembered as friend to animals. Due to his philanthropic Newman's own brand, which produced several vegan products and directed money towards animal protection organizations. All right. Eating that anymore. Our next three round three question round is called Smilu noge or Skirting the copyright. Hold on, let me explain. For this round, I'm going to play you the chorus of three iconic John Williams penned movie themes, and you need to tell me the movie or franchise that the theme is from. It sounds kind of too easy.
Nate
You're gonna play it backwards.
Cal Randall
Well, he sang it.
Phil the Engineer
Great question, Randall. I am going to be playing these theme songs backwards. The audio is going to be reversed. Let's see your algorithm. Find me now. G Men back masking. All right.
Nate
Oh, this is great.
Phil the Engineer
The first theme you need to tell me the movie or franchise. I will accept. Franchise that. This theme song is from. Ready? Here we go.
Cal Randall
A little trippy.
Nate
I want someone to play this at my funeral.
Max Riva
Doesn't sound too bad.
Cal Randall
Is the devil's music, Phil.
Phil the Engineer
All right, let's play that one more time, shall we?
Max Riva
It doesn't sound too bad.
Cal Randall
Phil, if you had to guess, is this gonna get copyright dinged?
Phil the Engineer
I don't think so.
Cal Randall
No chance.
Phil the Engineer
No. Yeah, well, yeah, they're. They're.
Nate
This is a brilliant segment.
Phil the Engineer
Caught on to a lot of those. Put those. Those uploads people do where they just like reverse the image and. And pitch down the audio a half step or whatever. But, yeah, I think we're fine.
Cal Randall
You kind of came up with this idea.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah.
Cal Randall
Yeah. Very good.
Phil the Engineer
How we feeling, Room? Good. Great. All right, go ahead.
Cal Randall
It's like 100ft.
Phil the Engineer
Feel your answers. We have Spencer saying Jurassic Park, Reva saying Jurassic Park, Cal saying Jurassic Park, Randall saying Jurassic Park, Corey saying Jurassic Park, Nate saying Jurassic Park, Max saying Star wars, and Brody saying Jurassic Park. The correct answer is Jurassic Park.
Cal Randall
Might as well leave that on the board though, for the next question.
Corey
Spencer jinxed. Yeah, you know, he said it was 100% er.
Nate
Now, Phil, is this actual. Is this the actual poster or did you take a photo of the VHS tape in my office?
Phil the Engineer
Oh, that's the actual poster. You guys want to keep talking about that for about five seconds while I get everyone's scores?
Corey
An adventure 65 million years.
Max Riva
Last time ever. Everyone in the room got a answer right, and I didn't. I was the Only person to get the next question right.
Cal Randall
Oh, wow. Maybe. Maybe again.
Corey
That was a big day.
Cal Randall
Also, I think the number is 66 million years. Jurassic Park. They just went for either the nice, wrong, nice round number or they're wrong.
Phil the Engineer
Former both of you know, Tanner resident and curator of paleontology at the Museum of the Rockies, Jack Horner served as a dinosaur consultant on all of the Jurassic park films and provided the inspiration for the Sam Neill character, Dr. Alan Grant. To hear more about how Horner is tired of talking about Jurassic park, check out episode 301 of the Meat Eater podcast titled It Ain't just Chickens that are Dinosaurs.
Cal Randall
And I put him on the spot on that episode and said, hey, what would it take for a guy to get to go digging with you? And then he didn't really answer. And so then I asked him again, and then he's like, well, I guess you could just email me. So I emailed him and he didn't answer. And then I emailed him again and he did answer. And he kind of gave me a haphazard invite to which I said, I'm coming. And then I went and I dug for dinosaurs with him.
Phil the Engineer
Awesome. Nice.
Cal Randall
Kind of against his will. He was great.
Nate
He gave you a pretty clear answer twice.
Max Riva
Maybe three times.
Nate
Yeah.
Phil the Engineer
All right, let's listen to the next theme played in reverse.
Corey
One of the greatest movies of all.
Cal Randall
Time.
Phil the Engineer
One more time because it sounds so lovely. What you got there, buddy?
Max Riva
Did I get it?
Phil the Engineer
Oh, wow.
Cal Randall
Phil, is. Is cinema specifically your strong suit in pop culture?
Phil the Engineer
I mean. No, actually, not. Not really. I, you know, I'm not. I, I went to film school, but I, I'm not like, deep in the lore and the history of the. The film historians. There's, There are a lot of real dorks out there that, Whom I, I respect a great deal.
Nate
But this is prob.
Phil the Engineer
Yes, yes. For the true. For those who haven't heard, what I've been doing on radio live is I've been doing like a third movies, a third music, and a third video games. I mixed it up today. It's all. All movies.
Cal Randall
Have you guys seen the new Jeopardy. The pop culture Jeopardy. Hosted by Colin Jost?
Max Riva
No.
Cal Randall
Shelby and I watched the first episode and I said it's three person teams. I said a good team would be her, Phil, and Randall. So Phil and Randall, you guys could go, I assume, to la.
Nate
Let's get on that.
Cal Randall
And you guys could. You could leave Shelby out of it too. You guys would be good at Jeopardy. Pop Culture. Now she. She covers Things I don't know.
Max Riva
Okay. Yeah, but you cover things she doesn't know.
Cal Randall
Yeah, but I think those things. Randall would. Yeah, so there'd be a lot of overlap with me and Randall.
Corey
It's like they're. We're looking at their wedding vows right now.
Cal Randall
That's right. Yeah.
Phil the Engineer
All right. How we feeling?
Cal Randall
There's. We were attracted to each other based on our lack of old pop culture.
Phil the Engineer
Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Spencer saying Indiana Jones, Reva saying Indiana Jones, Cal saying Indiana Jones, Randall saying Indiana Jones, Corey saying Indiana Jones, Nate saying Star Wars, Max saying Titanic. That is James Horner and Brody saying Star Wars. The correct answer is Phil. Slapped. I'm sorry, Matt. It's just so fun. It's okay.
Max Riva
I'm used to it.
Phil the Engineer
Raiders of the Lost Ark or Indiana Jones. Great job, team.
Nate
Boy, what a hunky drawing there.
Phil the Engineer
During the scene in the well of Souls, when Indiana and Marion are trapped in a room full of snakes, producers supplemented the genuinely dangerous cobras and pythons with glass snakes or ophosaurus legless lizards that can be indistinguishable from snakes at a distance. Quote. Those literally could. Those literally you could pick up and put on your lap. Actress Karen Allen told the Today show in 2023. I remember sticking my finger in their mouths just to prove to myself that they were as harmless as I was being told they were. And they were indeed fairly harmless.
Cal Randall
Really?
Phil the Engineer
You have any facts about that animal? Glass lizards, Anyone know?
Cal Randall
No, they just look like snakes.
Phil the Engineer
No, they just look like snakes. Yeah. All right, last question in this round. Listen up. Come on.
Max Riva
Have I wrote this answer down yet, Phil?
Phil the Engineer
No. No hands, Max. One more.
Corey
I don't know.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah, you do.
Nate
This is. I took a music class in college, and we listened to a lot of stuff that sounded like this played forward.
Phil the Engineer
It sounds like a college music class.
Nate
Yeah.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah. This one seems to be a stumper a little bit. So you want to feel confident. No, no.
Cal Randall
Yeah, I feel kind of confident.
Nate
I'm confident.
Cal Randall
I'm surprised at how similar these sound. But when you hear backmasking of, like, AC dc. Oh, you have no idea what you're hearing. Apparently, the words are the big hang.
Phil the Engineer
A lot of his scores, especially the ones that were written around the same time, sound very similar. He definitely worked in modes throughout his career, and also a lot of his stuff kind of uses similar themes.
Nate
I thought the timpani in the Jurassic park theme song was just a dead giveaway. Right at the end of that clip, you play that timpani comes in and.
Cal Randall
Oh, God, the instrumentation sounds like. Sounds like you took class in college, Randall.
Nate
Oh, yeah.
Phil the Engineer
All right. Wow. I feel. I feel good about this one.
Nate
Oh, it just got marker.
Cal Randall
Are there 10 questions, Phil?
Phil the Engineer
There are 10. We have four more after this. I'm going to do a scoreboard update after this question.
Nate
Cory, in the future, when you. When you leave your uncapped marker in my presence, please don't put it point up like this. Now I have to wash my hands, God forbid, for the first time today.
Phil the Engineer
All right, I'm going to wrap it up here. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Spencer saying Harry Potter, Reva saying Harry Potter, Cal saying E.T. randall saying Star Wars, Corey saying Star Wars, Nate saying Harry Potter, Max saying Tommy Boy, your closest one yet. Brody saying Harry Potter. The correct answer is Harry Potter.
Max Riva
How is that close?
Phil the Engineer
I was being facetious. The actual title of this song is Hedwig's Theme, named for Harry. Snowy owl that appears in the first book and movie.
Corey
Sure.
Phil the Engineer
After some inaccuracies were pointed out in her descriptions of the owl's behavior, Potter author J.K. rowling responded, quote, I made a few elementary mistakes when it came to my depiction of Hedwig. Hedwig. Firstly, snowy owls are diurnal. They fly by day. Secondly, they are virtually mute. So Hedwig's frequent, frequent hoots and chirrups of approval and comfort should be taken as signs of her magically enhanced abilities. Thirdly, as countless well meaning owl lovers and experts keep writing into me, in the early days, owls do not eat bacon because Harry would feed her bacon all the time.
Corey
I better not want to eat.
Phil the Engineer
Sure.
Max Riva
Yeah.
Cal Randall
Phil, are you a fantastic beast fan?
Phil the Engineer
I like the first movies. The other ones are not good.
Cal Randall
Couldn't that owl just have been a fantastic beast? Wouldn't that have been clean?
Phil the Engineer
Yeah, probably.
Cal Randall
Yeah. Then she wouldn't had complaints.
Corey
God, there's so many ways for me to weigh in on this conversation. I'll just.
Spencer Newharth
Next question.
Phil the Engineer
Please keep the timeline short.
Corey
I'll just not.
Phil the Engineer
Well, that's about halfway through the game. Maybe a little over. Don't worry, I'm not going to keep you here for too long. Let's look at the scoreboard really quick. Maximilian, you have zero points.
Max Riva
Yeah. Thank you.
Phil the Engineer
I'm glad you're here though. I always love seeing you.
Max Riva
Oh, I love providing comedic relief.
Phil the Engineer
Nate has two points. Riva, Corey and Brody all have four points apiece. And tied up in first place are Spencer and Randall.
Nate
Phil, are you sure that five points.
Phil the Engineer
I'm pretty.
Cal Randall
Oh, yeah, six questions.
Phil the Engineer
And. And Cal, there. Yeah, There have been six questions.
Nate
Oh, I've gotten more than one wrong.
Phil the Engineer
Have you? Yeah. I don't think you have the Harry.
Nate
Potter and the Jennifer Lawrence.
Phil the Engineer
Now there's an honest man for you. Okay, thank you so much. See, this is four points. The one man show is falling apart on the show. There you are. I appreciate that.
Nate
I might have even gotten another one wrong, but let's just stick with that.
Cal Randall
Did you get Indiana Jones?
Nate
Yes. In Jurassic Park.
Cal Randall
Okay, cool.
Phil the Engineer
Appreciate it. Well, our final round will consist of four questions and is titled Posting on Maine.
Corey
I feel like Harry Potter after you have Indiana Jones under your belt is just like I'm cloning it in.
Phil the Engineer
I'm spanning generations here, Cal.
Cal Randall
That's right.
Corey
It's like down Market Williams.
Max Riva
You look a little sunburned there, Randall.
Nate
Yeah. And I actually photoshopped a bunch of milt out of this photo.
Cal Randall
Oh, you did?
Nate
Yeah, there's a stream of milt all down my belly and leg from this fish.
Phil the Engineer
It looks seamless. Don't double tap that screen. I'm not talking about that kind of post. I am going to show you a cropped and zoomed in portion of an iconic movie poster and I need you to tell me what movie you believe the poster is advertising. I did not write any follow up factoids to half assedly tie these moves into our four verticals this time. But the theme of my images is eyes. And animals have eyes, right?
Cal Randall
Yeah, some of them do.
Phil the Engineer
There you go. So it's good. The first photo. What movie is this image from? What movie poster? The movie poster for the movie. We will not be accepting the actor and can. Does anyone. What's the point of this?
Corey
I think I wasn't paying attention.
Phil the Engineer
It's cinema.
Cal Randall
Cal, you have to guess what poster is. What poster is that from?
Nate
It's a crop.
Cal Randall
It's a zoomed in.
Corey
And are the words accurate on it?
Phil the Engineer
Yeah. What's the words?
Nate
No, he added those.
Phil the Engineer
The words are a part of the poster. The words are a part of the poster. They have eyes and animals have eyes.
Max Riva
I think I got a good answer.
Phil the Engineer
Does someone want to describe what we're looking at for the audio listeners?
Max Riva
So it says looks like 5 million friends.
Corey
500.
Phil the Engineer
Wrong again.
Cal Randall
Looks like a Caucasian male about 24 years old.
Max Riva
Are those brown or hazel eyes?
Phil the Engineer
I think they're blue.
Cal Randall
I, I think he's kind of got a Mona Lisa thing going on.
Nate
Piercing eyes.
Cal Randall
We don't know if he's smiling and.
Nate
We can only see him from the mid of his forehead to just below the tip of his nose, maybe even just intersecting with the tip of his nose.
Phil the Engineer
The.
Nate
The bottom border of our photo here.
Cal Randall
And if you want to play along, you should go check out the Me Deater Podcast Network YouTube channel.
Phil the Engineer
Thank you, Spencer.
Cal Randall
Phil's beautifully cropped work.
Corey
Boy, I feel like there's a lot of resemblance between this dude and.
Phil the Engineer
My answer's already down.
Cal Randall
Like you're the last person I'm gonna.
Phil the Engineer
Steal an answer from.
Max Riva
When you're in need, you're gonna look at.
Corey
Over at.
Max Riva
My answer's gonna be right.
Phil the Engineer
All right, let's see those answers. We have Spencer saying the Social Network.
Max Riva
Ah, yeah, that's it.
Phil the Engineer
Riva without an answer. Cow without an answer. Randall saying the Social Network. Corey saying Star Wars. Nate saying the Social Network. Max saying Inception, and Brody saying the Social Network. The correct answer is the Social Network. I thought it was Anakin Skywalker. Close. I thought that was Adam first.
Corey
Zombieland would have.
Nate
Not the face I was expecting. The mouth expression.
Phil the Engineer
Jesse Eisenberg. It's a great, great poster. Great trailer.
Cal Randall
You don't get to 500 million Jesse.
Phil the Engineer
Eisenberg or more Mark Zuckerberg without making a few enemies. All right, the next photo. Oh, we are looking at a half of a pair of aviator style glasses. Very reflective. Some sort of lit skyline moving in the reflection of the glasses and the image is distorted. It's a little distorted. It's a little warped. Kind of twisted, I would say.
Corey
Randall, did you.
Max Riva
Is that a Christmas?
Cal Randall
Did you distort it?
Phil the Engineer
I did not distort it. No, no. This is from. This is pulled from the movie poster.
Corey
Why was everybody so into the Social Network? I mean, that doesn't.
Cal Randall
The 500 million friends gave it away. I didn't know.
Phil the Engineer
I figured it was the star.
Corey
I was thinking maybe like, remember Arachnophobia? That was a good movie. A lot of bugs. A lot of bugs out there.
Phil the Engineer
That dude from Friends who just died was in that movie, wasn't he?
Nate
Perry.
Phil the Engineer
Matthew Perry.
Corey
Was he an arachnophobia?
Phil the Engineer
Never saw it.
Corey
But John Goodman's in there crushing it as usual. Great movie.
Nate
God, I loved him. The Flintstones.
Phil the Engineer
Oh, I think they're making a second Flintstones. Do you hear that? No, I just made it up. All right, how we doing?
Max Riva
Great.
Phil the Engineer
You guys ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Spencer, who crossed out many sort of car, fast moving, cross out.
Cal Randall
Gone in 60 seconds and rush Hour.
Phil the Engineer
And wrote down Fast and Furious. Reva wrote down Fear and Loathing. In Las Vegas. Cal wrote down Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Randall. Fear and Loathing. Not enough. Corey, Fear and Loathing. Nate, Fight Club. Max, Top Gun. And Brody. Bright lights, big city. Correct answer is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Corey
Damn aviators. Top Gun. I get it.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah.
Corey
Yeah.
Max Riva
I was so calm.
Corey
Trail of breadcrumbs.
Phil the Engineer
Next image.
Corey
A little freaky.
Phil the Engineer
A little freaky.
Cal Randall
You know this, Max.
Max Riva
Maybe.
Phil the Engineer
So this is sort of like a. Like, it's kind of like a dot matrix. Sort of like just a bunch of dots that look like a creepy pair of eyes on a yellow background.
Corey
Maybe a title.
Max Riva
First thing that came to my mind, I wrote it down. Brody might cheat here. What movie's that?
Nate
I don't.
Max Riva
Oh, you guys.
Nate
I don't think you're right, Max.
Phil the Engineer
I'm either one of you.
Nate
I don't think I'm right.
Max Riva
Well, thanks. Say that, Randall. Just my record?
Nate
No, just the. Your answer.
Max Riva
Did you look at it?
Nate
Yeah. It was plainly visible.
Cal Randall
Looks like the COVID of a Radiohead album.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah, I can see that.
Cal Randall
Mm.
Phil the Engineer
The bends.
Nate
Yes.
Corey
I don't know.
Cal Randall
Yellow.
Phil the Engineer
Stumped room. I know. I. When I first made this round, I thought it was too easy, so I replaced some of them. And now, I don't know. Maybe I should have gone back to the other one.
Corey
That's just right. Yeah, you're separate.
Phil the Engineer
You guys are doing pretty well.
Corey
You're moving the spread.
Nate
Mm.
Cal Randall
Were you impressed with Adrian, or did you think that nine was what she would get?
Phil the Engineer
I. You know, I was thinking eight or nine. Honestly, I thought. I thought nine was. I thought she would get eight is.
Nate
This one she missed.
Phil the Engineer
Nine was solid. She got this one correct and about it. This is one of her fastest ones.
Corey
So girls know this?
Phil the Engineer
Yes. That is what we can draw from this information. Or as Yanni would say, the female mind.
Corey
What do girls do with their spare time?
Phil the Engineer
All right, I'm gonna wrap it up here in a couple seconds. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Spencer saying the Shining, Riva saying the Shining. Cal's saying where the Wild Things Are. Randall saying the.
Nate
Yeah, I was gonna write the Shining.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah, probably Corey without an answer. Nathan saying Chucky, Max saying Kill Bill, and Brody saying Silence of the Lambs. Correct answer is the shiny.
Cal Randall
Hell yeah. Reva.
Phil the Engineer
Nice.
Max Riva
Nice job, guys.
Nate
Nicely done.
Corey
I haven't seen that poster.
Phil the Engineer
No, same.
Cal Randall
Yeah, that. That looks fake to me.
Phil the Engineer
That was the very real poster. All right.
Nate
That was just a wild guess for you.
Cal Randall
It was like the. Like the face. Yeah, exactly.
Nate
Sure.
Corey
That's Cool.
Cal Randall
Like what. What he does when he breaks through the. Or when he's trying to come through the door. That was the only thing I could think of.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah. I don't know what this is supposed to be recalling. It looks like a kind of a creepy baby when there. There are no creepy babies in the Shining.
Cal Randall
It also looked like 70s or whenever that came out.
Phil the Engineer
Sure.
Corey
Book is. Is super creepy. The movie's fantastic. Love it. Creepy too.
Phil the Engineer
But last scoreboard update here. Max has zero points, Nate's got three. I think this is correct. But if you guys have been keeping your own score there very possible probable chance that I screwed up. But we got Brody and Corey with five points a piece. Riva and Cal with six, as well as Randall. And in first place, our illustrious host, Spencer Newharth. He has seven points.
Nate
And no one can catch Adrian.
Phil the Engineer
No one can catch Adrian. Congratulations. Proud of you. All right, final question, final image. I should say I made this one very difficult on purpose, hoping that maybe there'd be one or two of you that might pull it out of our arse.
Nate
Little.
Phil the Engineer
I could pull an audible and show the. The original one I was going to do.
Corey
I would like.
Phil the Engineer
Change it up.
Max Riva
Do it for me, Phil.
Cal Randall
Phil declared before the episode that he didn't have a tiebreaker and then he came up with one.
Nate
Phil, Have I seen this movie?
Cal Randall
Don't tell him.
Nate
Has anyone in this room seen this movie?
Phil the Engineer
Yeah, I would say that probably at least three of you have seen this movie. Oh, wow. I didn't go. I didn't reach into the annals of some weird 1950s B movie. This was a critically acclaimed thought to be a modern masterpiece.
Cal Randall
That's enough, Phil.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah. Did it win any awards?
Cal Randall
That's enough. Hold on.
Phil the Engineer
Give us a heads up too when you're about to do. We're looking at a sort of. I don't even know how to describe this. It's kind of like there's a pair of female eyes. Some. Some eyeshadow. She's. She's looking at.
Cal Randall
No idea.
Max Riva
Very thin eyebrows.
Phil the Engineer
Thin eyebrows. Some sort of. I don't know what's around her head. Is it hair? Is it something else? There's no way to tell.
Nate
Interesting.
Corey
Oh, Phil.
Cal Randall
Giving out.
Max Riva
I might change my answer now.
Nate
I don't know.
Cal Randall
H. Brody's the only one old enough to have seen this movie, so that's not really fair.
Phil the Engineer
Come on.
Nate
A Modern Masterpiece, Spencer, do you know it?
Cal Randall
No, I have no idea.
Max Riva
I don't even know what that movie is.
Phil the Engineer
Good. You never see this. Man.
Max Riva
No.
Phil the Engineer
Oh, that's one you should go watch about. My guess.
Max Riva
Okay, save it.
Phil the Engineer
I saw it. All right. How we doing? We're going to wrap it up here. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Spencer says Gong with the Wind. Reva says the Great Gatsby. Cal says Chicago. Randall without an answer. Corey says Night at the Roxbury. Nate says Monty Python on the Holy Grail. Max says the Sound of Music. And Brody does not have an answer. The correct answer is Chinatown, starring Jack Nicholson. How many of you have seen Chinatown?
Cal Randall
I've seen.
Corey
Nope.
Cal Randall
You had two Jack Nicholson movies in there. Back to back. Oh, wow.
Phil the Engineer
I did well with that last question. That makes Spencer our winner.
Cal Randall
Hell yeah.
Corey
Wow.
Max Riva
Nice job, Spence.
Phil the Engineer
And now. Thank you. All that's left to do is to choose an organization you'd like to donate these. This 500 to.
Cal Randall
That was fun, Philosopher.
Phil the Engineer
Thank you so much. I feel like it ended on kind of a down note.
Cal Randall
That was a hard one. Never.
Phil the Engineer
That was a hard one.
Cal Randall
I'm going to donate my $500 to the North American Sturgeon Paddlefish Society. They're right here in Bozeman. They specifically study and fund studies and do public outreach about two of my favorite fish in the world. Sturgeon, specifically pallet sturgeon and the American paddlefish. A lot of listeners will never catch one of them or see one of them, but if like me, it just makes you happy knowing that they exist out there in American waterways. That's a group that you should consider supporting, the North American Surgeon and Paddlefish Society. We're going to send $500 their way. And that's a new organization that we've donated to.
Phil the Engineer
Awesome. Beautiful.
Corey
I bet they have some thoughts on irrigation and the Yellowstone and none of.
Nate
Them have seen Chinatown.
Phil the Engineer
That'll do it for this week's episode of Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins.
Cal Randall
What a pro.
Phil the Engineer
Yeah. Spencer from South Dakota, he's the host. Using those smooth, mellow tones, he lays them questions down. And he likes taking those two and three year old bucks. And he's an avid amateur rock hound.
