Hey, American history buffs. Hunting history buffs, listen up. We're back at it with another volume of our Meat Eaters American History series. In this edition, titled the Mountain Men 1806-1840, we tackle the Rocky Mountain beaver trade and dive into the lives and legends of fellows like Jim Bridger, Jed Smith and John Colter. This small but legendary fraternity of backwoodsmen helped define an era when the west represented not just unmapped territory, but untapped opportunity for those willing to endure some heinous and at times, violent conditions. We explain what started the Mountain man era and what ended it. We tell you everything you'd ever want to know about what the mountain men ate, how they hunted and trapped, what gear they carried, what clothes they wore, how they interacted with Native Americans, how 10% of them died violent deaths, and even detailed descriptions of of how they performed amputations on the fly. It's as dark and bloody and good as our previous volume about the white tailed deer skin trade, which is titled the Long Hunters 1761-1775. So again, you can buy this wherever audiobooks are sold. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Randall Brody, Max, Alyssa, Riva, Nate and Corey. This is a ten round quiz show with questions from meteors for verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking. And there is a prize. Meer will donate $500 to the Conservation organization of the winner's choosing. And for the stat of the week. This week we're looking at the most common category for question 10. Randall wasn't satisfied that I only looked at our last 10 episodes to get that stat. So today I present. I present to him a version that looks at our last 30 episodes during that time. The categories of wildlife, natural history, cooking and woodsmanship combined to be the final question 27% of the time. Conservation was 13% of the time, fishing was 23% of the time, and hunting was 37% of the time. Hunting was the final question four more times than fishing in our last 30 episodes. Ending this conspiracy that fishing gets more representation as question 10. Randall.
Randall Brody
Well, you know what they say, perception is reality.
Spencer Newarth
You know what they say? Fake news.
Max
I think it just means we need to direct our hate or our frustration towards Brody for just being.
Spencer Newarth
That's right.
Alyssa
Oh, I've been saying this.
Spencer Newarth
It feels like sometimes here's our infrequently asked question segment. If you have a trivia related question for our crew, send it to trivia@the mediator.com with the subject line IFAQ. Matt Lapin says. What's the weirdest question someone has sent you, Matt? I would say it's less about, like, the specifics of what's in the question. It's usually more about how it's delivered or when it's sent. Last night, for example, I got five questions sent during the super bowl, which makes me wonder, like, what, what are you doing that you're not in on this, like, national event of watching the super bowl, that you're like, oh, I'm gonna write an email to you.
Randall Brody
Maybe they were inspired. Were they all questions about nachos?
Spencer Newarth
No, no, no. It was, it was totally unrelated. It was, yeah, just like not on that person's radar, which is cool. I'm glad that we have those listeners.
Riva
What did you respond with? Are you watching the super bowl right now?
Spencer Newarth
No, but I sure thought about it. I was like, oh, the first one came down, it was like, oh, another one, then another one. Five people during the Super Bowl. Another thing is I. I've probably gotten in the history of the Meater trivia inbox, 50 people who have sent me a fax to the inbox. So then what I get is like a piece of paper that someone wrote on that. Then they then walk to a fax machine and then sent the fax to the trivia.com. that's a really special way.
Randall Brody
That's amazing to.
Spencer Newarth
To send me a question. So that's probably the weirdest question. Were those 50 folks who have sent me faxes?
Nate
We should do a fax only episode one time.
Spencer Newarth
I bet we find some commonalities in those questions from the people. There you go. We've already got the branding. Say it again, Randy.
Randall Brody
Just the facts.
Spencer Newarth
Just the facts.
Randall Brody
If I knew how to do that, I'd do it all the time. That would be so funny, sending a fax.
Spencer Newarth
Yeah, yeah, let's get a fax machine for your office, Randy. We'll just fax each other all day. So that's. That's the weirdest question. People sending me faxed questions. All right, we have some housekeeping for today. I want to tell you about an upcoming event. This Friday, Valentine's Day, the meat eater crew is hosting the grand slam after party at the NWTF convention in Nashville. Me, Cal, Clay, and Giannis will be there to celebrate turkeys. And at the party, there will Be live music and live trivia. The show starts at 8:45 and tickets are on sale now for $40. Come hang with us on the most romantic day of the year. And you might just get lucky winning a raffle prize. Go to nwtf.org for more details.
Randall Brody
Masterfully done cliffhanger right there.
Spencer Newarth
All right, the Shelby index for today is a five. So I'm putting us on perfect score alert. With that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil. Look, I need to know what I stand to win. Everything. How's that you stand to win everything. Game on, suckers. Question 1. The topic is conservation. And as always, this will be multiple choice. Which of these people does not have a national forest named after them? Is it Davy Crockett, Annie Oakley, Mark Twain, George Custer? Which of these people does not have a national forest named after them? Is it Davy Crockett? Annie Oakley? Mark Twain, George Custer? Confident. Randall and Brody, quick to answer. Oh wow. Danny Oakley. Who's calling you? Brody? Is it important?
Nate
Steve?
Spencer Newarth
Oh, no, not important.
Riva
Yeah, hang up.
Spencer Newarth
Which of these people does not have a national forest named after them? Davy Crockett, Annie Oakley, Mark Twain, George Custer. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Nate saying George Custer. Corey says Annie Oakley. Riva says Annie Oakley. Randall, Nate. Annie Oakley.
Alyssa
That was a trick question, dude.
Randall Brody
Nate's a recent transplant.
Spencer Newarth
Alyssa, Max and Brody all say Annie Oakley. They got it. The correct answer is Annie Oakley. Tell Nate why he should know that one.
Nate
Cuz it's like we're like, how many miles away?
Spencer Newarth
Yeah, Eastern Montana, probably what, 200 miles. The Davey Crockett National Forest is in Texas, Mark Twain National Forest is in Missouri, and Custer National Forest is in Montana. Although there's no Annie Oakley National Forest. She does have a museum, festival, TV show and Broadway musical named after her.
Alyssa
That's what I was thinking of.
Spencer Newarth
Phil, do you know what the Broadway musical is? Amy, get your gun. That's right. Are you familiar with it though?
Max
Not really, no.
Riva
What kind of gun is it, Phil?
Max
Winchester, model 30.
Spencer Newarth
Exactly.
Riva
I actually don't know what it is, so I was.
Max
I don't either.
Spencer Newarth
Question 2. The topic is hunting. And this next great question is via Nathan Noble. This Monopod company is named after North America's smallest falcon. This Monopod company is named after North America's smallest falcon. ROEM is not quite as confident on question two.
Riva
Are we talking about cameras or guns?
Spencer Newarth
Well, the category is hunting.
Riva
I know, but when you say monopod, I think cameras.
Nate
Some people Hunt with a camera. Spencer.
Spencer Newarth
This monopod company is named after North America's smallest falcon. I don't see any of our players with an answer quite yet. Randall, do you have an answer?
Randall Brody
I can think of a company, Brody, but I don't know I got an.
Spencer Newarth
Answer, but this monopod company is named.
Nate
After I got there.
Spencer Newarth
North America's smallest falcon.
Riva
Just trying to go through birds right.
Spencer Newarth
Now for North America's smallest falcon. We may have a zero percenter on question two.
Randall Brody
That's disappointing. After five index. Yeah. Geez.
Spencer Newarth
How do you feel about your answer, Randall?
Randall Brody
I don't like it.
Spencer Newarth
Okay.
Randall Brody
But I have two guesses, and one I know is a company.
Spencer Newarth
This monopod company is named after North America's smallest falcon.
Max
I'm looking up Annie Oakley's guns right now. She had so many guns from all kinds of brands. I'm sure Sig Sauer was also one of them.
Spencer Newarth
Is everybody ready?
Riva
Yeah. I'm not gonna get it.
Spencer Newarth
Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Nate saying maven. Corey says peregrine. Riva says man. Fioto.
Riva
Manfrotto.
Spencer Newarth
Manfrotto. Randall says kestrel. Alyssa says Red. Max. Without an answer, Brody says kestrel. The correct answer is kestrel. Brody and Randall got that one right.
Riva
On the tip of my tongue.
Spencer Newarth
The average kestrel is about the size of a mourning dove. Besides being the smallest falcon on the continent, they are also one of the most common and most colorful. The bird goes by many nicknames like the sparrow hawk, killy hawk, grasshopper hawk, and mouser.
Alyssa
I just think of the wind check thing.
Randall Brody
Yeah, that's what I was thinking of.
Spencer Newarth
Yeah, explain.
Alyssa
You know, the little ballistic wind calculator, A weather meter, like jump Masters will have them or whatever.
Spencer Newarth
Now, Steve was in here recording VO before this show, and he must have said the word kestrel 50 times.
Riva
Really?
Spencer Newarth
So I'm glad nobody was listening too closely. Did you catch on to that philosopher?
Max
Yes. Spoilers for an upcoming episode of A Hunting history.
Spencer Newarth
What a coincidence. He said kestrel a whole bunch.
Max
Yep.
Spencer Newarth
Question three. The topping is. The topic is cooking. The Escoffier School of Culinary Arts says this type of knife is ideal for working with small vegetables and is, quote, basically a mini chef's knife. The Escoffier School of Culinary Arts says this type of knife is ideal for working with small vegetables and. And is basically a mini chef's knife. Our room is very confident on this one. Is everybody ready? Oh, we're waiting on Reva. We can give you some time, Reva.
Randall Brody
Give the audience some Time as well.
Spencer Newarth
Sure. Your other players are watching you now, though, Reva. I know I putting a lot of pressure.
Randall Brody
I'm staring at the board.
Nate
I would say that I find myself using this type of knife very often. Not one I reach for a lot.
Spencer Newarth
You know what? I don't either. But I like having it.
Randall Brody
Now I'm wondering if I have it correct or if I'm using the knife that I think I'm using.
Alyssa
We couldn't find our knives in the move, and I used this exclusively for, like, the last three months.
Spencer Newarth
Okay.
Riva
Wow.
Spencer Newarth
Very familiar. Yeah. I find this knife to be my sixth finger when I'm in the kitchen. Reva, do you give up? I put something down. Okay.
Riva
I use it a lot for peppers.
Spencer Newarth
Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Nate and Corey saying pairing. Reva says parody. Randall and Alyssa and Max and Brody saying pairing. They got it. The correct answer is pairing, and the spelling of that is P A R I, N, G. Just like Brody. Good thing. Good thing.
Riva
Speller doesn't count.
Spencer Newarth
That's right. They say a paring knife is great for peeling veggies, removing seeds, deveining shrimp, and trimming meat. Most paring knives have a blade that's less than three and a half inches long, making them ideal for precise cuts.
Randall Brody
So you guys aren't using paring knives?
Riva
No, man.
Nate
If I need something like that, I just grab the old pocket knife.
Spencer Newarth
True. I use it for everything because I cut myself on knives all the time.
Randall Brody
So that one less knife to cut yourself on. Yeah, I'm always cooking in my sweatpants, so I don't have a pocket knife.
Spencer Newarth
Question for the topic is wildlife, and this next great question is via Phil Philip Weiderhold. What animal was on american nickels between 1913 and 1938? What hoofed animal was on american nickels between 1913 & 1938? Brody and randall and Nate are all confident in their answer.
Riva
On a nickel.
Spencer Newarth
On a nickel. 1913.
Alyssa
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Spencer Newarth
19.
Randall Brody
I'm trying to remember what you call a coin collector. It's a fun word.
Spencer Newarth
Mm. I could Google that for you. You think there's a specific name like a rockhound?
Randall Brody
Yeah, but it's not a rock. It's like a. It's an ologist.
Spencer Newarth
A numis. A numismatist.
Randall Brody
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking of.
Spencer Newarth
Is it?
Randall Brody
Yeah.
Spencer Newarth
Yeah. A numismatist. Numismatist.
Randall Brody
Numismatist. Maybe.
Spencer Newarth
There you go. Maybe.
Randall Brody
It's a funny word, though. That's What I was thinking of. That's why I was making that face.
Spencer Newarth
What hoofed animal was on American nickels between 9, 1913, 1938? Is everybody ready?
Randall Brody
Guess we don't have any numismatists in the house.
Riva
No.
Spencer Newarth
Max, you like your answer?
Riva
Let's see.
Nate
Let me see if you should like your answer.
Spencer Newarth
Yeah, you should, like, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Nate and corey saying bison. Reva says donkey. Randall says buffalo. Alyssa says horse. Max and Brody say buffalo. The correct answer is bison or buffalo. Talk about african buffalo. Those coins are referred to as the buffalo nickel. Teddy roosevelt expressed dissatisfaction with the artistry of American coins in 1904, which launched a new era for the u. S. Mint. The buffalo nickel was considered one of the most beautiful coins, but also one of the most flawed. The nickels wore down three times faster than most coins with the words 5 cent regularly rubbing off. The buffalo nickel stopped production after 25 years for that reason.
Riva
What's on it now?
Spencer Newarth
You know, Thomas jefferson and monticello or.
Randall Brody
No, the. Is it the jefferson memorial?
Max
Yeah, I'm not sure.
Spencer Newarth
When. When they do a coin, they're obligated to make it for 25 years. And they knew pretty quickly the buffalo nickel was not the forever coin. So as soon as that 25 years was up, they were done with the buffalo nickel.
Alyssa
Sounds like pennies are done for too, now.
Spencer Newarth
Yeah, it was a great super bowl.
Randall Brody
Someone el dissatisfied with the artistry of american coinage.
Spencer Newarth
That was. That was a moment where it's like someone writing to the meat eater inbox when donald trump is tweeting about getting rid of the penny. Yeah, like, I know you're at the game, dude. Question five. The topic is fishing. The national weather service defines this as, quote, sustained surface winds of 34 to 47 knots. The national weather service defines this as sustained surface winds of 34 to 47 knots. Brody and Randall and Nate all quick to answer again. Question 5. The topic is fishing.
Nate
What you got there, max? Keep me entertained here.
Spencer Newarth
Yeah, that's entertaining. Come on. Of 34 to 47, I thought that.
Riva
Was a great answer.
Nate
You got time to change it if you.
Spencer Newarth
Brody.
Alyssa
Stick with your guns, dude.
Randall Brody
Yeah, the seat next to Brody is kind of a risky choice.
Riva
I'll sit next to brody.
Randall Brody
I know.
Nate
I like it.
Riva
Clearly, he doesn't show me his answers, though.
Nate
You want to see my answer?
Spencer Newarth
Yeah. Did you consider that?
Riva
No.
Spencer Newarth
Oh, okay.
Riva
Oh, but I still like my answer.
Spencer Newarth
Max and brody.
Nate
I'm even gonna do a little thing here.
Spencer Newarth
Oh, wow. Brody is going back to his whiteboard. The National Weather Service defines this as sustained surface winds of 34 to 47 knots. Randall, do you have this one right?
Randall Brody
I think so. I think so.
Spencer Newarth
As the captain in the room. Well, there's a lot of pressure to get this one right.
Randall Brody
An ex captain. I have an expired license. Let it be known.
Spencer Newarth
We'll call you the expired captain.
Randall Brody
Yeah, that's fair. That's fair.
Spencer Newarth
Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Nate saying gale force. Cory says hurricane. Riva says headwind. Randall says gale. Alyssa says high tide. Max says straight line winds. Brody says gale force. The correct answer is Gail. About half of the room got that.
Riva
At least I put down something that was like, there you go. Somewhat close. I'm really glad.
Randall Brody
Wind related? Yeah.
Spencer Newarth
Gale winds are between 39 and 46 mph. Winds that are 47 to 54 mph are severe gales, 55 to 63 mph are storm winds. 64 to 72 mph are violent storm winds, and above 72 are hurricane winds. Phil, we're halfway through the game of trivia. Give us a scoreboard update.
Max
What do you know? I'll just say a. Brody and Randall, I mean, they've got a perfect game. They're tied up in first place. Nobody behind them has four points, but Nate, Corey and Max have three points, Alyssa has two and Reva has one.
Nate
How many's Max got?
Riva
Three. Hey, fine. Better than the last time, Phil.
Spencer Newarth
Doing great.
Randall Brody
Checking on your pro direct.
Max
Me, Max? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Spencer Newarth
Question six.
Nate
Look, I would love. I do cheer. I just love it if you.
Spencer Newarth
You won't be really warm. It's hard.
Riva
Hey, we're halfway there. Who knows?
Randall Brody
You were sitting in this seat when you won last time.
Nate
Tears of joy.
Randall Brody
So I haven't let you have it back.
Riva
It's fine.

Question 6. The topic is natural history. The Oregon Trail video game made this nine letter disease famous, which has symptoms like diarrhea, fever, vomiting, weight loss and stomach cramps. The Oregon Trail video game made this nine letter disease famous, which has symptoms like diarrhea, fever, vomiting, weight loss and stomach cramps. Phil, would you get this one right?
Max
Yes, Spencer, are you surprised?
Spencer Newarth
How much Oregon Trail did you play in your day?
Max
You know what, here's the thing. So our computers and in my elementary school when we had like library computer time or whatever, When I was 7 or 8, we had two games we could play. One was the Oregon Trail.
Spencer Newarth
Oh, and is the other one Finding Carmen Sandiego?
Max
No, I did speak and teach that. I did play that at home. But there was another game called the Incredible Machine. I don't know if anyone played this, but it was basically you. You could design your own Rube Goldberg machines on like a 2D plane and with all kinds of like little interactive parts and stuff.
Spencer Newarth
Okay.
Max
And that was always more fun to me than the Oregon Trails. I. I didn't play a lot of Oregon Trails.
Spencer Newarth
Okay. Our. Our singular game I think was Finding Carmen Sandiego. And I would credit that with what I feel like is an above average geography knowledge. The Oregon Trail video game, which has this. Which. Excuse me. The Oregon Trail video game made this nine letter disease famous, which has symptoms like diarrhea, fever, vomiting, weight loss and stomach cramps.
Randall Brody
Oh, I can't wait to see what this is.
Max
It's. It's an incredible answer on multiple levels.
Spencer Newarth
Okay, I know it's not. Oh, and he's erasing it.
Riva
I'll keep it. His not a big deal.
Randall Brody
Providing be a big deal.
Spencer Newarth
High entertainment to Phil and Brody watching his whiteboard. Is everybody ready?
Riva
Yeah, that's.
Spencer Newarth
Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Nate saying dysentery. Corey says listeria. Reva says dysentery. Randall dysentery. Alyssa dysentery. Maxwell says measles. Measles with a Creative sp. Spelling. Brody says dysentery. The correct answer is dysentery. About 10% of those who traveled the real organ trail died. With disease being the biggest killer. Virtual pioneers were all too familiar with other causes of video game death being exhaustion, snake bites, broken bones, drowning, blizzards and starvation. Randall, did you ever play the organ?
Randall Brody
Oh, I loved it.
Riva
It was a lot of fun.
Randall Brody
You got 20 shots when you going hunting. Remember that the little bullet things in the.
Spencer Newarth
Well, they always. They've like changed the game throughout the areas. And so I don't know how long like 20 shells has been.
Randall Brody
And then you could. And then it would. It would just say you killed 1100 pounds of meat. You can only bring 200 with you.
Spencer Newarth
So that's a good wrinkle in the games. Good on them.
Randall Brody
Yeah.
Spencer Newarth
Question seven. The topic is conservation. This canal, which was famously blocked by a container ship in 2021, has given passage to over 100 non native fish to the Mediterranean Sea. This canal, which was famously blocked by a container ship in 2021, has given passage to over 100 non native fish to the Mediterranean Sea. What do you got, Randall?
Randall Brody
Nothing. I mean, I got something, but it's just too far afield to really merit.
Alyssa
Dude, never mind.
Spencer Newarth
What's wrong, Nate?
Alyssa
Nothing.
Spencer Newarth
Do you have this one right?
Alyssa
Yeah.
Spencer Newarth
Okay.
Stephen Rinella
Yeah.
Randall Brody
World traveler.
Alyssa
Well, that's what I'm saying. Dude. I feel like there's so many bones given to Montana residents in this game.
Spencer Newarth
Because we live there.
Randall Brody
Not enough.
Nate
I also feel like you could word this question differently for like every major canal in the world.
Randall Brody
It's great.
Spencer Newarth
Sure. Yeah, that's, that's. That's part of Me Eater trivia.
Riva
I have one to over 100 non.
Spencer Newarth
Native fish to the Mediterranean Sea. Do you have this one right, Brody?
Nate
I think so.
Spencer Newarth
Okay.
Nate
I mean, I remember the whole thing. I could. I can like see picture.
Alyssa
I'm trying to remember the ship's name.
Randall Brody
Oh, that'd be cool.
Alyssa
I do know it.
Spencer Newarth
Was it the Evergreen Given?
Alyssa
Ever Given? That's it.
Spencer Newarth
Yeah. Oh, you could be right to it.
Alyssa
I think it had two names. That was confusing.
Nate
Let's go flip them over before someone gives this away.
Spencer Newarth
Well, I gotta Google what it was called first. It was the Ever Given. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Nate saying Suez. Corey without an answer, Riva says Suez. Randall and Alyssa and Brody say the Suez Canal.
Riva
You skipped me.
Spencer Newarth
Max says Red Sea canal. The correct answer is the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal was completed in 1869, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. Since then, over 400 non native marine species have migrated into the Mediterranean via the waterway. Most notable of them is the lionfish, which now has established colonies off the coast of Israel.
Nate
Go ahead and give yourself half a point then.
Riva
Thanks, Brody.
Spencer Newarth
Question 8. The topic is wildlife, and this is our listener question of the week, which was won by Maggie Green for sending this great question. Maggie is going to get a board game signed by the crew. If you want a chance to win our listener question of the week, then send your question to trivia@themeater.com. this musician used to host short nature documentaries called Plezanet Earth. This is question eight. Topic is wildlife. This musician used to host short nature documentaries called Plezanet Earth. Brody, you have this one, right?
Nate
I should hope so.
Spencer Newarth
Okay, Nate and Randall both have answers as well. Max, do you have this one right?
Riva
I don't know, Brody. Do I?
Nate
Hey, count yourself a winner this time.
Spencer Newarth
There you go. Max was giving us a review of the halftime show before we turned on the mics. One to ten, Max, how good was the Kendrick Lamar halftime show?
Riva
I didn't like it, but I like the beef that was going on.
Randall Brody
But do you like Kendrick? Do you listen to a lot of Kendrick?
Riva
I don't even know if I can tell you one song.
Randall Brody
It probably wasn't.
Max
Probably why you didn't like it.
Spencer Newarth
So one to 10, max. That's a good guess.
Randall Brody
I don't know.
Riva
Gave it a three. I like.
Spencer Newarth
I liked it. How?
Riva
Like, it was like a real life music video happening the whole entire time. Yeah, I thought the videography was cool.
Spencer Newarth
That.
Corey
That.
Spencer Newarth
That is fun. That's an experience made for us at home, not the people in the stadium. That's got to be a real bore to watch that happen in front of you. Again, this musician used to host short nature documentaries called Plazanit Earth.
Riva
But speaking of the Super Bowl, I saw this guy in a commercial a couple times.
Spencer Newarth
Okay, is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Nate saying Snoop Dogg. Corey says Kendrick Lamar, Riva and Randall and Alyssa and Max and Brody say Snoop Dogg. They got it. The correct answer is Snoop Dogg or what's his full name? Randall Calvin Brodus. I actually said Snoop. I think I was thinking Clarence was in there somewhere. But I think. I think you're right. I think you're right.
Nate
Oh, he's right.
Spencer Newarth
Snoop would make these unscripted videos for the Jimmy Kimmel show. Here he is narrating a fight between an otter and crocodile.
Riva
This is the best.
Spencer Newarth
While Struggling to identify the otter. Take it away. What it do?
Corey
Is your boy big Snoop Dogg? Hey, let's look at another animal. These are beavers. Look like. Oh my God. That's a crocodile. That's Wally gator. Look how they standing up on they toes like, hey, cuz, we gotta get up outta here, cuz.
Riva
Come on.
Corey
He got em cornered right now. Oh, whoa. They going head up with him. They ain't scared of him. What is these animals? Them the ones that eat snakes. Huh? Is them mongooses? Oh, wow. It's about 12 of them. Cause they didn't back the gator up. I ain't never seen the gator get punked by no mongooses.
Spencer Newarth
Retreat.
Corey
Yeah. Retreat. Yeah. Back up. Yeah. We them boys. Hey, hold up, hold up, hold up.
Spencer Newarth
We them boys. I love that. You can hear the wheel spinning if he says these things are beavers.
Riva
Mongooses.
Spencer Newarth
Phil, we have two questions left. Give us a scoreboard update.
Alyssa
So good.
Max
Yeah, sure thing. In last place, you've got Corey with three points. Coming up next is Riva. And then Max has 4.5 points. Got a half point. Good job, Max.
Spencer Newarth
I don't know how that happens.
Randall Brody
It looks bigger than the rest of ours.
Riva
I got 45 points, actually.
Max
Alyssa has five, Nate has six, and Brody and Randall still have their perfect game with eight points.
Riva
Good job, guys.
Max
Nate is the only one who can catch up. But let's, you know, let's be serious.
Alyssa
Let's be real about serious.
Max
Serious room.
Spencer Newarth
Freaking question nine. The topic is cooking. Encyclopedia Britannica defines this nine letter Italian word as, quote, a first course or appetizer in Italian cuisine. We've stumped the room with this one. Encyclopedia Britannica defines this nine letter Italian word as a first course or appetizer in Italian cuisine.
Max
Easy.
Spencer Newarth
Nate could possibly catch.
Nate
No, it's on the tip of my.
Spencer Newarth
Tongue because Nate, it's optimistic about his answer.
Alyssa
Oh, dude, freaking Annie Oakley's gonna haunt my dreams.
Randall Brody
But you missed two.
Alyssa
But you guys are all gonna miss this. And then I'm gonna get the next one. And we would have tied and then I would have won overtime.
Spencer Newarth
There we go. There's still a path, huh?
Nate
It's just not gonna come to me.
Spencer Newarth
Encyclopedia Britannica defines this nine letter Italian word as a first course or appetizer in Italian cuisine.
Alyssa
You are a cooking question monster.
Spencer Newarth
I guess. Corey, do you have this one right? Yeah. Okay. Corey and Nate, not that it matters.
Alyssa
Or we're going down together.
Riva
Just, I'm trying to make up some Word right now.
Spencer Newarth
Make it Italian.
Nate
Give us a hint.
Spencer Newarth
Spencer, your hint is that it's a nine letter Italian word.
Riva
Don't look at mine.
Spencer Newarth
It's not pizza. It's not designed as a first course or appetizer in Italian cuisine.
Alyssa
I could sing you guys Happy Birthday in Italian if you wanted.
Riva
Wow.
Spencer Newarth
Wow. You know what? I would like that today.
Riva
Let's do it.
Alyssa
Well, hold on now after the question.
Spencer Newarth
Steve's birthday is on Thursday and he's Italian. He's got a vowel at the end of his last name. You could come in and sing him Happy birthday.
Alyssa
I will be in Salt Lake.
Spencer Newarth
Damn.
Riva
Show season.
Nate
Just thought of it. Spencer.
Spencer Newarth
Dang it. Good job, Nate.
Alyssa
I know. I should just shut my mouth.
Spencer Newarth
Randall is squirming.
Randall Brody
Yes, he is.
Spencer Newarth
Randall and I had reservations at an Italian restaurant on Friday night, but because of the snowstorm, I couldn't make it through the pass. But had we gone there, maybe Randall would have gotten this one right.
Randall Brody
Yeah.
Spencer Newarth
Mother nature, though.
Alyssa
All right, TikTok's Tick Tock.
Spencer Newarth
Yep. A first course or appetizer? Italian cuisine.
Max
Oh, nice.
Riva
Did he look at my answer?
Spencer Newarth
What's your answer, Max?
Riva
I had. I had this down.
Spencer Newarth
Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Nate and Cordy saying antipasta. Riva says hors d'oeuvre. Randall says antipasta. Alyssa without an answer. Max without an answer. Brody says antipasta. The correct answer is antipasto or antipasti. If you put antipasta, we'll give it to you because it often gets corrupted to that version.
Randall Brody
I just kept thinking of, like, when you go. Some Italian restaurants have, like, primo Secundi, and they. They just enumerate them, and I was just stuck in that headspace.
Riva
That's where I was.
Randall Brody
I needed to get on a different menu, so I appreciate that.
Spencer Newarth
Oh, no, no. Antipasto is the singular version of that word. And antipasti is the plural antipasto. Antipasto can come in the form of cured meats, sausages, olives, anchovies, sardines, fresh fruit, pickled veggies, mushrooms, shellfish, and cheeses. Some examples of antipasto from Themeater.com include venison, tartar, walleye wings, and pickled gizzards.
Riva
I made tartar yesterday.
Spencer Newarth
Antipasto, Max.
Riva
Yeah, it was very good.
Spencer Newarth
All right, here's a correct answer review so far. One was Aniokley. 2. Kestrel. 3. Paring Knife. 4. Bison. 5. Gale. 6. Dysentery. 7. Suez Canal. 8. 8. Snoop Dogg. 9. Antipasto. Going into question 10, we have Randall and Brody tied up with nine correct answers. The topic is hunting. And this question is via Adam Brennan. Give the first name of either man that Pope and Young is named after. Randall, quick to answer. Brody is now backed into a corner. Give the first name of either man that Pope and Young is named after. Randall, do you have this right? With certainty, yes. Could you name both man?
Randall Brody
I will just.
Spencer Newarth
Okay, maybe cross one out though, and that. That can be some flavor text for when I read your answer. But then we know which one you want to make it. Give the first name of either man that Pope and Young is named after. Brody. Doing a lot of writing, Brody. How's that process going? It's going okay. Randall is very optimistic. Brody. He could name both of them if he had to. We're just looking for one, though.
Nate
Are you trying to, like, get in my head or something? Come on.
Spencer Newarth
Trying to I just create some drama for our listeners to enjoy while the rest of you sit here in silence. If the first name of either man that Pope and Young is named after. Do you have this one right, Brody?
Nate
We'll find out.
Randall Brody
I was gonna be shocked if he didn't know this.
Spencer Newarth
Wow.
Randall Brody
I thought this was gonna be just a wash. Like a good old fishing question, as they say. You know the old saying, just another fishing question.
Max
I've also noticed that Spencer has not chosen a fishing question. For the last question. For the last question.
Spencer Newarth
You're right. You made me very self conscious about it.
Max
I don't think. Yeah, it's like son of a coincidence.
Randall Brody
I think that's good for the health of the game.
Spencer Newarth
That's a flaw, so I better fix that. And now I've overcorrected it.
Randall Brody
It's like the NFL and quarterback rules, you know?
Spencer Newarth
Is everybody ready?
Alyssa
No. Give me one sec. Not that it matters.
Spencer Newarth
Nate, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Nate saying John. Corey saying Brian Reeva says bring them young. Randall says Saxton. He crossed out Arthur. Alyssa says Adam. Max says Bishop. Brody says George. The correct answer is Saxton and Arthur or Art Randall. Got that one right, Randall.
Nate
Way to go, Randall.
Spencer Newarth
Dr. Saxton Pope and Art Young have been called the fathers of bow hunting. They learned archery from a man named Ishii. The last known survivor of the Yana tribe in California. Ishi taught them how to stock and kill game using obsidian arrow points. Pope and Young was created in 1961, which is a few decades after Saxton and Art died.
Riva
It's a great factoid.
Spencer Newarth
Which one?
Riva
The Ishi Yeah, the issue.
Spencer Newarth
Did you know about Ishi? I did, Randall.
Randall Brody
I actually spent. When we were down in Mexico, we spent like a good 20 minutes trying to remember the name issue.
Spencer Newarth
Okay.
Randall Brody
But I did come up with it then too. Just like Annie Pasta.
Spencer Newarth
And here you are now with a perfect game. I think our first perfect might want to pay attention to bear grease over the next few months. Oh, why is that? Riva can't say anything.
Randall Brody
It's a really fascinating story.
Spencer Newarth
Okay. Randall has the perfect game. I think the first perfect game of 2025. That means meat Eater is going to double its donation from $500 to 1000 today. Where is that money going?
Randall Brody
Let's send that money to the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership.
Spencer Newarth
TRCP getting $1,000 from Meteor. And Randall, we've been on an overtime drought again this year. I think we've had zero of them in 2025.
Randall Brody
Well, not complaining. We didn't go to overtime this this round.
Spencer Newarth
So Brandon was like, yeah, let's keep it that way. Wins with 10. Brody right behind him with nine. That's it for this week's game of Meat Eater Trivia. Join us next week for more Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins.
Randall Brody
Thank you, Spencer.
Alyssa
Spencer?
Spencer Newarth
Yeah, Spencer from South Dakota. He's the host. Using those smooth, mellow tones, he lays them questions down. And he likes taking those two and three year old bucks.
Nate
And he's an avid amateur rock hound.
Stephen Rinella
Hey, American history buffs. Hunting history buffs, listen up. We're back at it with another volume of our Meat Eaters American History series. In this edition, titled the Mountain Men 1806-1840, we tackle the Rocky Mountain beaver trade and dive into the lives and legends of fellas like Jim Bridger, Jed Smith and John Colter. This small but legendary fraternity of backwoodsmen helped define an era when the west represented not just unmapped territory, but untapped opportunity for those willing to endure some heinous and at times, violent conditions. We explain what started the mountain man era and what ended it. We tell you everything you'd ever want to know about what the mountain men ate, how they hunted and trapped, what gear they carried, what clothes they wore, how they interacted with Native Americans, how 10% of them died violent deaths, and even detailed descriptions of how they performed amputations on the fly. It's as dark and bloody and good as our previous volume about the white tailed deer skin trade, which is titled the Long Hunters 1761-1775. So again, you can buy this wherever audiobooks are sold. Meat Eaters American History The Mountain Men, 1806-1840, by Stephen Richard.
