Hey, American history buffs. Hunting history buffs, listen up. We're back at it with another volume of our Meat Eaters American History series. In this edition, titled the Mountain Men 1806-1840, we tackle the Rocky Mountain beaver trade and dive into the lives and legends of fellows like Jim Bridger, Jed Smith and John Colter. This small but legendary fraternity of backwoodsmen helped define an era when the west represented not just unmapped territory, but untapped opportunity for those willing to endure some heinous and at times violent conditions. We explain what started the Mountain man era and what ended it. We tell you everything you'd ever want to know about what the mountain men ate, how they hunted and trapped, what gear they carried, what clothes they wore, how they interacted with Native Americans, how 10% of them died violent deaths, and even detailed descriptions of of how they performed amputations on the fly. It's as dark and bloody and good as our previous volume about the white tailed deer skin trade, which is titled the Long Hunters 1761-1775. So again, you can buy this wherever audiobooks are sold. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer Newharth and today we're joined by Randall Brody, Corey Logan, Tressa and Max. This is a ten round quiz show with questions from meat eaters for verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking. And there is a prize mediator will donate 500 to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing for the stat of the week. This week we're looking at the overtime drought that we're currently in. We haven't had a game go to overtime since December 4th, meaning we're on an 11 week overtime drought. This breaks our previous record of 10 straight weeks without overtime.
Randall Brody
That's serious stuff.
Spencer Newharth
It is. It's been a while. The last time we actually went to overtime, the question was how many teaspoons are in 1.25 cups?
Corey Logan
Remember?
Spencer Newharth
What? What was the answer, Brody? Do you still know it?
Corey Logan
48.
Spencer Newharth
It was 60. But you got a dead nuts that day. We had an eleven hundred dollars donation because we went to overtime with Randall and Brody having perfect games. And then you got the overtime question. Exactly.
Tressa
Oh, how, how did you like calculate that?
Corey Logan
Mind like this, I think it comes out to. Is it three per.
Spencer Newharth
I don't remember.
Max
There's three teaspoons in a tablespoon and I don't remember how many.
Corey Logan
Yeah, I forget how I got there.
Spencer Newharth
But your kid sure likes measuring stuff at home in the kitchen. So you said that gave you a big advantage.
Corey Logan
Yep.
Spencer Newharth
And it did.
Corey Logan
Oh, yeah, he just made me a nice loaf of banana pecan bread last night.
Brody Henderson
Did you bring it in?
Corey Logan
That shit's great. Oh.
Spencer Newharth
So 11 straight weeks with no overtime. All right, here's our infrequently asked question segment. If you have a trivia related question for our crew, send it to trivia the meat eater.com with the subject line IFAQ. John Schlesinger says, what kind of PhD does Dr. Randall have? And more importantly, where can we read his dissertation?
Brody Henderson
He'll tell you.
Randall Brody
I find it hard to believe that that's an infrequently asked question.
Spencer Newharth
It is.
Corey Logan
Well, does PhD mean professional hunting degree?
Randall Brody
That would be nice. That would be nice. Steve has another acronym that he likes to do.
Spencer Newharth
What is it? Can't say it.
Randall Brody
Pretty huge.
Brody Henderson
Okay, fill in the blank.
Randall Brody
No, I have a PhD in history from the University of Montana. I earned that in 2015. And if you'd like to read the dissertation, you'll need to contact the University of Montana library because it's not publicly available. I have.
Spencer Newharth
We could publish it on our website. How about that, Rand?
Randall Brody
I have vague aspirations at some point of. Of reworking it into something that would be for popular consumption.
Spencer Newharth
What was it about?
Corey Logan
See, Randall. And right after Spy. Right after you got your PhD. Yeah, on stars in the Sky.
Randall Brody
Oh, no, that. Was that. Was that prior to your p. No, that was like a year or two afterwards. But I did do a meat eater podcast, like episode 12 or something right after. Probably a month after I finished.
Spencer Newharth
Okay, Fresh doctor.
Randall Brody
Yeah, One of the first, very first meteor episodes.
Spencer Newharth
But what was your dissertation about?
Randall Brody
Hunting in American politics and culture in the 20th century.
Tressa
Oh, yeah, he talked about it last night in the. The Live tour.
Corey Logan
You should do an addendum to that for the 21st century.
Spencer Newharth
There you go.
Corey Logan
Lots changed.
Randall Brody
Oh, a lot has changed.
Spencer Newharth
What's above a doctor? A double doctor? No, what can you do?
Brody Henderson
A good doctor.
Randall Brody
I mean, great doctor. I don't think there's anything better than a Ph.D. spencer. But yeah, I mean, advanced. Advanced degrees in the humanities. Just a ticket to a lucrative and fulfilling life.
Max
Brody, you're disrupting the camera shot right now. Do you want to move your hand?
Randall Brody
That's my camera too.
Max
Yes, you're covering Randall perfectly.
Spencer Newharth
That is an IFAQ from our trivia question. Go John Schlesinger. Him And Leland Hart send me more questions than probably every other listener combined.
Max
Leland Hart's. He tunes in every week for radio live as well.
Spencer Newharth
Thank you, John. Thank you, Leland.
Randall Brody
All right, love you guys.
Spencer Newharth
We have some housekeeping. The long awaited meat eater tournament is on the horizon. We expect to have the three episode tournament out between the end of February and the beginning of March where we'll crown a 2024 Meat Eater Trivia tournament champion. So coming soon.
Randall Brody
Oh, that's exciting.
Spencer Newharth
It's like, it's, it's weird that it's, you know, obviously happening in March. The year after it will act like it's like, you know, the NBA finals during COVID where they had to like push it back a few postpone it.
Randall Brody
It would be fun to go into.
Spencer Newharth
A bubble trivia bubble with the gang Disney. Yeah, yeah.
Randall Brody
Good bass fishing.
Spencer Newharth
Yeah. So that, that is coming soon. All right, the Shelby index for today is a four. So our winner should get eight correct answers. With that, we're on to the game. I can do eight trivia. Play the drop, Phil. I need to know what I stand to win.
Brody Henderson
Everything.
Spencer Newharth
How's that?
Brody Henderson
Just tend to win everything.
Spencer Newharth
Before we start.
Corey Logan
Spencer, I was thinking for that tournament, you know how for like football games they do like the little player profile.
Spencer Newharth
Sure.
Corey Logan
Dudes come out like do a little dance or like go like that. You and Phil should do some of those.
Spencer Newharth
Okay. Some B roll of you guys looking all smart. Yeah, we could pull that off. All right, question one. The topic is ecology and this will be multiple choice. Which state is not included in the corn belt according to the usda. Is it Nebraska, Ohio, Minnesota or South Dakota? Three of those states are part of the corn belt. One is not. Is it Nebraska, Ohio, Minnesota or South Dakota? Max wasn't supposed to play trivia today. And when he found out that he was, he says, well then you ought to throw me a bone. And I had this question written before Max was going to show up. But he's lived in Minnesota. He's lived in South Dakota. Question one is firmly a bone.
Brody Henderson
I haven't lived in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana.
Spencer Newharth
I assumed you spent some time in.
Randall Brody
Minnesota, but your grandma's place is in.
Brody Henderson
Right on the Red River.
Randall Brody
Yeah, I knew that. Could this be a bets from the game? You went trivia.
Spencer Newharth
There you go.
Logan
I wonder if this is a bone for anybody from Ohio.
Brody Henderson
Yeah. Is there anyone from Ohio here?
Spencer Newharth
I don't know, Logan.
Randall Brody
I guess we'll never know.
Max
No.
Spencer Newharth
Which state is.
Corey Logan
There's a lot of corn in Ohio.
Spencer Newharth
Included in the Corn Belt. Just so you know, according to the usda, Nebraska, Ohio, Minnesota, or South Dakota. Is everybody ready?
Corey Logan
No. Are we?
Spencer Newharth
Yeah. Max was quick to answer. You feel good about your answer, Max? Yeah. How about you let me see your answer?
Randall Brody
I actually don't feel great about my answer.
Logan
That's a good question.
Spencer Newharth
Again, three of these states are part of what the USDA defines as the Corn Belt. One of them is not Nebraska, Ohio, Minnesota, South Dakota. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Tressa saying Nebraska. Corey says Ohio. Randall says Ohio. Logan says Minnesota. Max says Ohio. Brody crossed out Minnesota and wrote down South Dakota. So we have every answer, I think, represented in here today.
Brody Henderson
We got one correct answer.
Spencer Newharth
The correct answer is South Dakota. Only Brody got that one.
Max
I don't know if you guys caught this, but. But Ma, Max made a funny little joke and asked to see Brody's answer, which is normally what Brody does to Max. And then after.
Brody Henderson
After Brody showed Max's answer.
Max
I don't know what face Max made, but Brody, you changed your answer.
Brody Henderson
But I didn't think he was gonna write down South Dakota.
Spencer Newharth
In 2006, the USDA declared the Corn Belt to be a six state region consisting of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and Ohio. Encyclopedia Britannica disagree slightly, saying Ohio isn't in the Corn Belt, but Kansas is. Neither place includes South Dakota in the Corn Belt, though.
Randall Brody
I was thinking of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
Spencer Newharth
You knew that? Definitely.
Brody Henderson
Well, isn't the states like South Dakota?
Spencer Newharth
What are we doing?
Logan
Yeah, it's not much of a.
Spencer Newharth
That's where South Dakota is. Yeah, South Dakota's right here. Ohio's way, way over there. It's like a contiguous region, the Corn Belt that they define. And then I was like. I was also surprised about their definition. So I looked at, like, what states produce the most corn. And Minnesota actually produces twice as much corn as South Dakota. So South Dakota not part of the Corn Belt. Wow.
Brody Henderson
If I was putting money on that, I would not put money on South Dakota.
Spencer Newharth
Question 2.
Corey Logan
That's why you got the question wrong.
Spencer Newharth
Yeah.
Logan
South Dakota has the Corn palace.
Brody Henderson
I know.
Randall Brody
That's what's so counterintuitive.
Spencer Newharth
That's like in the middle of the Corn Belt of South Dakota, though, you start getting west of there and you lose all that darn corn.
Brody Henderson
You do. It's east river and west river, but still.
Spencer Newharth
Question 2. The topic is fishing. And this next great question is via Jacob Arnold episode. Miriam Webster defines this seven letter word as, quote, a water passage where the tide meets a River current. Randall and Brody already have their answers. Miriam Webster defines this seven letter word as a water passage where the tide meets a river current. This is question two.
Corey Logan
If there's another seven letter word, I'm not going to think about it.
Spencer Newharth
Brody, how'd you end up choosing South Dakota for not being part of the corn?
Corey Logan
Honestly, man, it's all based on driving across the country.
Spencer Newharth
Okay, like, that's like.
Corey Logan
Yeah, I don't remember seeing a lot.
Spencer Newharth
Of corn in south corn. Miriam Webster defines this seven letter word as a water passage where the tide meets a river current.
Randall Brody
Yeah, I remember grow. I remember seeing a lot of corn growing up, you know, in Ohio, obviously. Like, I can visualize that, but I just never thought of being included in the corn belt. Perhaps I underappreciated our contribution to the. To the nation.
Spencer Newharth
I'd say Ohio has some of the best corn because they also have a lot of timber. And it's like, I think I've said this before about Ohio, but they've got this. The right amount of rolling hills.
Randall Brody
Oh, thank you.
Spencer Newharth
Nice topography for hunting whitetail deer.
Randall Brody
Yeah.
Spencer Newharth
Miriam Webster defines this seven letter word as a water passage where the tide meets a river current. Anyone besides Brody and Randall confident?
Randall Brody
No, I didn't say I was confident.
Spencer Newharth
Okay, but you have an answer that's seven letters.
Corey Logan
Got it. Come on. He's just playing coyote.
Randall Brody
You never know.
Spencer Newharth
Do our other players have a similar question to this? Well, I do a lot of things where I say, I know what you're talking about.
Tressa
It was where two rivers. It was where two rivers meet. And it was a Greek letter.
Spencer Newharth
Yeah. Oh, that was delta. Yeah.
Tressa
So it's not delta.
Spencer Newharth
Okay, that was from a Jabroni episode recently.
Logan
Yeah, sure.
Brody Henderson
No, that's salt water.
Spencer Newharth
Brody got a good chuckle from.
Brody Henderson
I wasn't even done with my word and you start chuckling.
Spencer Newharth
All right, does everyone else give up?
Corey Logan
There's different ways to go about this. There's like, thinking of the right word or starting with seven letters and being like, oh, yeah.
Spencer Newharth
Feeling like, okay, well, I'm just making.
Brody Henderson
Sure my answer has seven letters.
Spencer Newharth
Maxwell, do you give up?
Brody Henderson
Yeah.
Spencer Newharth
Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have tresses saying whirlpooled. Corey says estuary. Randall says estuary. Logan says causeway. Max, without an answer, Brody says estuary. The correct answer is estuary. Estuaries are some of the most productive environments on Earth based on how much organic matter they produce. They also are enormous economic drivers through recreation and. And shipping. Some notable estuaries are Chesapeake Bay, San Francisco Bay, and. And the Hudson Bay. Question 3. The topic is natural history. This dog breed, which is named after a monk, was bred to rescue avalanche victims in the Swiss Alps. This dog breed, which is named after a monk, was bred to rescue avalanche victims in the Swiss Alps. Brody and Randall already have their whiteboards down with an answer that they seem to like. Corey has now joined them. Corey, do you have this one right?
Logan
I believe so. Got to add to it.
Spencer Newharth
Cory came up with estuary on our last question. He didn't seem to like his answer very much.
Logan
That was the same answer I had in that Greek. Oh, where the delta was.
Spencer Newharth
Delta.
Logan
I said estuary.
Spencer Newharth
Oh.
Randall Brody
So we gave you a try. Try again.
Stephen Rinella
No.
Randall Brody
Okay.
Logan
I was very nervous, though. Like, shoot twice, aim once.
Corey Logan
Strong answer.
Brody Henderson
Max.
Corey Logan
Wrong answer. Strong.
Spencer Newharth
Strong answer. Brody likes Max's answer.
Brody Henderson
You know, Question three, wrote down.
Spencer Newharth
All right, again, the topic is natural history. This dog breed, which is named after a monk, was bred to rescue avalanche victims in the Swiss Alps. Logan, do you have an answer?
Brody Henderson
That's not the.
Corey Logan
I do, but I know it's wrong.
Tressa
So I'm trying to think of a better one.
Spencer Newharth
Tressa, do you have an answer?
Randall Brody
Same.
Spencer Newharth
Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Tressa saying Husky. Corey says Bernie's dog. Randall says Saint Bernard. Logan says Buddha. Hey. Max and Brody say Saint Bernard. They got it. The correct answer is the Saint Bernard. It's believed that Saint Bernards are the descendants of Roman war dogs. The breed was shaped by monks in the Swiss Alps to go on search and rescue missions and guard property. It was common for the dogs to work in teams of two. Once they found a victim, one dog would stay with the person to provide them with warmth, and. And the other dog would go get help. One Saint Bernard, Barry, saved 40 human lives between the years 1800 and 1812.
Corey Logan
You're not gonna get. I thought you'd have a little flavor text on the little.
Max
The barrel.
Corey Logan
Little jug of booze.
Spencer Newharth
That wasn't true. I saw something that said that. That wasn't the case. They weren't carrying around little barrels of whiskey.
Randall Brody
That's no fun.
Spencer Newharth
I'm sure some Saint Bernards have at some point, but that wasn't. That wasn't like, their thing.
Max
You guys remember the Big Dogs brand of shirts?
Randall Brody
Yeah. That's one of my favorite. It's a Big Dog's World Big Dog Fire Department.
Spencer Newharth
Did you own some of those, Randall?
Randall Brody
No. But there is a big dog outlet. Oh, yeah, there's a big dog outlet. There was one in Spokane.
Max
There was one in Gresham, Oregon. That I would.
Randall Brody
Yeah, I had a. I had a buddy who just had all these Big Dog shirts.
Spencer Newharth
Yeah, those were. Those were cool. And then incredibly uncool. And I bet, like, Gen Z and what's below it's a Gen Alpha. I bet they would love Big Dog.
Randall Brody
Oh, yeah.
Spencer Newharth
Stuff right now, that'd be kind of sweet.
Randall Brody
Didn't know I was gonna think about Big Dog.
Max
I didn't either.
Randall Brody
What a treat.
Spencer Newharth
Question 4. The topic is conservation. This next great question is via Kale Carlin. What lake is Isle Royale national park located in? What lake is Isle Royale national park located in? Randall very quick to answer.
Randall Brody
Been there. You have spent some time on this lake.
Spencer Newharth
Okay, there's a hint.
Randall Brody
Getting there.
Spencer Newharth
No. Randall's Travels. What lake is Isle Royale national park located in? We've got Corey searching the room, looking for a piece of art or map that might help him. Are you finding anything?
Logan
No, nothing. This Nebraska map always throws me off.
Spencer Newharth
Oh, you could have seen that they're part of the Corn Belt. If you looked at that closely, I imagine they got a big. There's a John Deere logo on there. You'd have to.
Logan
That's the big one.
Spencer Newharth
Then you'd know that, hey, that. That state's part of the Corn Belt. What lake is Isle Royale national park located in? Brody, how do you feel about your ancestry?
Corey Logan
Man, I. I think I'm in danger of a slip up here, but we'll see.
Spencer Newharth
Is everybody ready?
Brody Henderson
You know what I was thinking about? My family? No. My Family Feud episode. Does that count as a trivia win?
Spencer Newharth
Sure, Max.
Brody Henderson
Sweet. I got two then, actually.
Spencer Newharth
Yeah. Well, you each have to divide it by how many people are on your team.
Brody Henderson
Four.
Spencer Newharth
Four. So you got one. One and a quarter wins, then.
Brody Henderson
Better than most.
Spencer Newharth
Maybe someone from your team would donate their other, like, quarter to you, though.
Brody Henderson
Maybe Yanni will.
Spencer Newharth
Does everyone have an answer? Max, you were thinking about family. And reveal your answers. We have Corey saying Michigan. Randall says Superior. Logan says Michigan. Max says Eerie. Brody crossed out Huron and wrote down Superior. The correct answer is Lake Superior. Located about 20 miles off the shore of Minnesota, Isle Royale is one of the least visited national parks in America. The only way to get there is via plane, boat, or ferry. I already have a ferry reservation for this June when I'll plan to visit the park for the first time.
Randall Brody
Lovely.
Spencer Newharth
When did you go?
Brody Henderson
Should have got that one.
Randall Brody
When I was in high school.
Spencer Newharth
Did you take the ferry there?
Randall Brody
We came from the Minnesota side on a boat. It was a very rough. It was one of the roughest boat rides I've been on.
Spencer Newharth
Oh, just like a civilian boat or you guys took a ferry?
Randall Brody
No, it's. Well, I wouldn't call it a ferry.
Corey Logan
A tour boat.
Randall Brody
Yeah, it was kind of a tour boat. It was probably. It had like an interior cabin with seating for 40 people. Maybe.
Spencer Newharth
Yep.
Randall Brody
And then we backpacked from the east side of the island to the west side of the island.
Spencer Newharth
What. What's your review of it?
Randall Brody
Oh, super cool. Saw a lot of moose. I wish I'd fished. I didn't bring. I didn't bring fishing equipment. The. The problem with that trip was that I had a one man tent and my brother had a one man tent. My parents had a two man tent and my brother forgot his tent poles.
Spencer Newharth
So he's bunking with you.
Randall Brody
So we had three. Three men tent.
Spencer Newharth
Sure.
Randall Brody
Combined for four people. So, yeah, one of those. One of those fun trips.
Spencer Newharth
The bad reviews I've read about Isle Royale is just a hellacious amount of mosquitoes. Yes. So I'm preparing myself for that.
Brody Henderson
Do you go from Duluth or Grand Marais or. Neither.
Randall Brody
Well, I think we went from Grand Marais.
Brody Henderson
Okay.
Randall Brody
Yeah.
Spencer Newharth
Question five. The topic is cooking. This is our listener question of the week, which was won by Jennifer Silberberg for sending this great question. Jennifer is going to get a board game signed by the crew. If you want a chance to win our listener question of the week, then send your question to triviator.com. what state produces 99% of America's stone crab harvest? What state produces 99% of America'S stone crab harvest? Brody, very quick to answer. The rest of our players have not yet put marker to whiteboard. Brody, you know this with certainty.
Corey Logan
You know, I. I think it's. I'm 99.
Spencer Newharth
Okay, 99. Sure that he knows where 99 of America's stone crab harvest comes from.
Brody Henderson
I think there's two different names for this crab.
Logan
Okay, so something else.
Randall Brody
I think Brody's just staring lazy.
Corey Logan
I mean, maybe I'm learning something. I don't know yet.
Brody Henderson
Could be wrong.
Spencer Newharth
Question 5. It's cooking. After this, we'll get a scoreboard. Update from Phil. What state produces 99 of America's stone crab harvest? I don't know. We could call it fishing if you'd like, if that makes you feel better. Topic is crabbing.
Brody Henderson
I know that's a blue crab.
Logan
Yeah, I can answer that one.
Randall Brody
I just don't know my crabs.
Spencer Newharth
How do you feel about your answer, Randall?
Randall Brody
I don't feel great.
Spencer Newharth
If you got to name five states. Do you think you'd be guaranteed to get it then?
Randall Brody
Yeah.
Spencer Newharth
Okay.
Randall Brody
I mean, how many states touch the ocean?
Spencer Newharth
Is everybody ready?
Randall Brody
Truth.
Spencer Newharth
Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Tressa sang Washington. Corey says Alaska. He crossed out Maine. Randall says Alaska. Logan says New Jersey. Max says Alaska. Brody says Florida. The correct answer is Florida. Only Brody got that one right. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the stone crab market is one of the state's five biggest fisheries. Everglade City is the hub, claiming to be the stone crab capital of the world. Stone crab flavor has been described as being similar to lobster with a slightly sweeter taste.
Corey Logan
Those are the ones where they're only allowed to pop the claw.
Spencer Newharth
Yeah. And I think they like. It's like catch and release with those things. Have you caught stone crabs before?
Corey Logan
I've eaten them down there. I haven't caught them.
Spencer Newharth
What's your review of Stone?
Corey Logan
They're very good. It's real good. It's not as good. Like, I don't think it's as good as Dungeness, but it's good.
Spencer Newharth
Phil, we're halfway through the game of trivia.
Brody Henderson
Brody, give us a scoreboard.
Max
It's looking rough out there, guys. What just happened? I'm sorry.
Randall Brody
Sorry. I just knocked a whiteboard off the thing here.
Max
Oh, that's fine.
Randall Brody
Lost all control.
Max
Tressa and Logan are not on the board yet with zero points. Corey and Max have one point a piece.
Spencer Newharth
We're not scum.
Max
Randall has three, and Brody is up by two at halftime with a perfect game. It's hard. It's hard to see a reality where anyone catches up with straight major things that happen.
Corey Logan
Randall came back and beat me last week or a few days ago.
Brody Henderson
One of us.
Spencer Newharth
Yeah.
Logan
He's not.
Tressa
I don't know.
Randall Brody
I think Phil was insinuating that I can't catch up.
Max
That's what I. I definitely was.
Randall Brody
I was gonna. I had a feeling on that last one that it was coming from the Atlantic, and I was thinking Florida, but I just didn't have enough courage of conviction to go to Florida.
Spencer Newharth
Looking unlikely that we'll have overtime again this week. If he.
Randall Brody
If he put two points on me in the first five, why can't I put two on him in the second?
Brody Henderson
True.
Spencer Newharth
Well, yeah, you're going to go to fishing.
Max
Questions?
Spencer Newharth
Question 6. The topic is mountain men.
Stephen Rinella
Hey, American history buffs. Hunting history buffs. Listen up. We're back at it with another volume of our Meat Eaters American History series. In this edition titled the Mountain Men, 1806-1840. We tackle the Rocky Mountain beaver trade and dive into the lives and legends of fellows like Jim Bridger, Jed Smith, and John Colter. This small but legendary fraternity of backwoodsmen helped define an era when the west represented not just unmapped territory, but untapped opportunity for those willing to endure some heinous and at times, violent conditions. We explain what started the mountain man era and what ended it. We tell you everything you'd ever want to know about what the mountain men ate, how they hunted and trapped, what gear they carried, what clothes they wore, how they interacted with Native Americans, how 10% of them died violent deaths, and even detailed descriptions of how they performed amputations on the fly. It's as dark and bloody and good as our previous volume about the white tailed deer skin trade, which is titled the Long Hunters 1761-1775. So again, you can buy this wherever audiobooks are sold. Meat Eaters American History the Mountain Men, 1806-1840 by Stephen Rinella.
Spencer Newharth
This.
Randall Brody
Feed me, baby.
Spencer Newharth
This state's capital is named after mountain man Kit Carson.
Logan
Good God.
Spencer Newharth
So you tell me the state, not the capital. This state's capital is named after mountain man Kit Carson. Corey, you have this one, right?
Logan
Yeah.
Spencer Newharth
Randall also looks confident. Brody had a quick answer, but now I do. I'm just like, he's doing whiteboard osmosis where he's got it pressed against his temple. This state's capital is named after mountain man Kit Carson.
Corey Logan
I'll make it interesting. Okay, I'll get it wrong.
Spencer Newharth
All right. Did you talk about Kit Carson in the recent audiobook?
Randall Brody
A little bit.
Spencer Newharth
What do we have to say about Kit Carson? Without giving it away, he ran away.
Randall Brody
From an apprenticeship as a saddle maker.
Spencer Newharth
Oh. Did that get him in trouble?
Randall Brody
I don't know that anything came of it, but it's a no, no. It's a no, no.
Spencer Newharth
This state's capital is named after mountain man Kit Carson.
Randall Brody
We also have an anecdote of a field amputation conducted in a little party that Kit Carson was traveling with.
Spencer Newharth
Oh.
Randall Brody
Yep.
Spencer Newharth
Is everybody ready?
Randall Brody
It's one of multiple field amputations covered in media American is either the state.
Brody Henderson
He'S from or the state he spent.
Spencer Newharth
Most of the time. I don't remember if it was Kit Carson, but I previously had a TR about a mountain man's last quote, and it may have been Kit Carson. On his deathbed, he said something like, I wish I just had time for one last bowl of chili That's.
Corey Logan
I think that's supposed to be Kit Carson. I don't know if it's true. I remember Steve talking about that.
Spencer Newharth
Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Tressa and Corey and Randall saying Nevada. Logan says Nebraska. Max says Idaho. Brody says Nevada. The correct answer is Nevada.
Brody Henderson
Reno, Nevada.
Corey Logan
Nebraska. Same thing.
Spencer Newharth
Carson City.
Brody Henderson
Oh, there it is.
Spencer Newharth
Yeah.
Brody Henderson
See, that's why I wouldn't have got it.
Tressa
I was gonna write down Idaho. I was like, Boise. There's no. There's no way Reno.
Spencer Newharth
John Fremont named the Carson river after Kit Carson, who was a scout for Fremont's expedition through the area. The city's population boomed when gold was discovered nearby in the 1850s, but slowed down after the mines dried up. Carson City has 50,000 people, making it the third smallest state capital, after Pierce, S.D. in Juneau, Alaska.
Tressa
How much time does Shelby have to answer these questions?
Spencer Newharth
If she doesn't know it, she moves on pretty quickly. So we wrap up a trivia test run in probably five minutes. It goes quick. Question seven. The topic is conservation. North America's most common rat is named after what? Nordic country? What?
Corey Logan
Max, you should know this.
Spencer Newharth
Why? Why should Max know this?
Corey Logan
I'll tell you later.
Spencer Newharth
Okay?
Max
I'm on the edge of my seat.
Spencer Newharth
North America's most common rat is named after what? Nordic country? Is Maxwell. Nordic. Is that.
Randall Brody
Does he have pet rats?
Corey Logan
I'll tell you later.
Spencer Newharth
Okay?
Brody Henderson
I think he's just calling me a rat.
Spencer Newharth
Randall, you know this one?
Randall Brody
I do.
Spencer Newharth
Brody, you know this one.
Corey Logan
Yes.
Spencer Newharth
North America's most common rat is named after what? Nordic country. We've got Max writing down as many Nordic countries as he can come up with. Not a bad strategy. Now, our other players are doing the same.
Corey Logan
And, Max, cover your board up.
Brody Henderson
Jeez.
Spencer Newharth
Hey, don't you want to beat Logan?
Tressa
It should be pretty easy at this point.
Spencer Newharth
North America's most common rat is named after what? Nordic country? This is question seven, and the topic is conservation. Max declared he has three Nordic countries written down.
Brody Henderson
I'm trying to think why I should know this.
Spencer Newharth
I think. I think Brody's just trying to mess with you. Is he gonna say that every time?
Randall Brody
Where are your ancestors from?
Brody Henderson
Nowhere near there.
Randall Brody
Yeah.
Spencer Newharth
This is nowhere that has rats. Corey, are you writing down Nordic countries?
Logan
Yeah, I got four.
Spencer Newharth
Okay. Tressa, is that your strategy as well? I don't even know if this is a Nordic country. Okay, okay, we've got. Corey is outright. Just shown his whiteboard to Max.
Randall Brody
Does anybody have a globe?
Logan
That's.
Spencer Newharth
We'd need a globe. We should have a globe now.
Corey Logan
What are you doing?
Brody Henderson
Writing down an answer.
Spencer Newharth
Max has erased all three Nordic countries he can think of.
Logan
It ain't that one. It's not that one.
Spencer Newharth
Logan, are you ready?
Tressa
I mean, I've got a Nordic country.
Spencer Newharth
Cory, are you ready?
Logan
What do you need to know?
Spencer Newharth
Were you writing down which country? One country. North America's most common rat is named after. What Nordic country? Tressa. Are you ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Tressa saying Poland. Corey, he wrote down Finland, Ireland, Sweden. And then he picked Norway.
Randall Brody
Iceland. I think I wanted him to get credit.
Spencer Newharth
Yeah, yeah. The listeners says Norway. Logan says Norway. Max says Norway. Brody says Norway. They got it. The correct answer is Norway. Now why should Max know that?
Corey Logan
Because he's from a part of the country where there's a lot of Norwegian immigrants.
Spencer Newharth
That's true.
Randall Brody
That's what? That's where I thought you were going with it.
Spencer Newharth
Max is basically made of lutefisk, right? Yeah. Norway rats are also known as brown rats, sewer rats and street rats. They arrived to North America via ships in 1775 and are now found in all 50 states. A two year study of New York City's rats determined that the uptown population is genetically different than the downtown population, with midtown acting as a barrier that largely keeps them from mixing. Wow.
Corey Logan
How did they not get here until 7, 1775?
Spencer Newharth
I don't know. They just kept clean ships before that, I suppose.
Corey Logan
Come on. No way.
Spencer Newharth
Question 8. The topic is fishing. Oh, speaking of the devil. This next great question is via Leland Heart. Hey, what was the name of the Wheeler Playmate 38 boat from Gilligan's Island?
Logan
Wow, really taking us back here.
Spencer Newharth
What was the name of the Wheeler Playmate 38 boat from Gilligan's Island?
Max
That was Brody's proudest whiteboard slam so far.
Spencer Newharth
Randall also seems to know it though. How confident are you, Randall?
Corey Logan
Phil, can you play the song after we're done?
Max
For copyright reasons?
Brody Henderson
No.
Max
But I did. I did pull a clip from this theme song for last week's episode of Cal's Week in Review.
Tressa
Check it out right up.
Corey Logan
And you hear a tale.
Spencer Newharth
Keep going.
Corey Logan
I don't know if I had any copyright laws.
Spencer Newharth
How much of Gilligan's island have you seen, Brody?
Corey Logan
I mean, when I was a little kid, it was like, you know. You don't remember back when there was only three channels?
Spencer Newharth
You're right. I do not remember.
Corey Logan
That was the show that was on after school.
Spencer Newharth
But I remember Nick. At night I watched A lot of Dick Van Dyke.
Corey Logan
Yeah, this was pre Nick at night.
Spencer Newharth
I also love pretty monkeys.
Corey Logan
Pre Nick at night.
Max
Oh, the monkeys. Yeah.
Spencer Newharth
I've recently gotten served some content on Instagram showing just how stoned the monkeys were when they were filming that. It's like so obvious now when you watch a clip and you see one of the monkeys is clearly very high while they were filming that show. You know what surprises me about Gilligan's Island? When I was researching this question only had three seasons. That seems like a show to me that had 20 seasons.
Randall Brody
When you asked Brody, how much of Gilligan's island have you seen? I thought even if I could name every episode I've watched, I'd have no idea how much of Gilligan's Island I've seen because it just exists.
Max
Just washed over you.
Spencer Newharth
Yeah, yeah. What did you watch a lot of Gilligan's Island, Randall?
Randall Brody
Yeah, I used to watch a lot of Nick at night.
Spencer Newharth
Huh. What did you like from Nick at Night?
Randall Brody
I'm not even going to remember what was on.
Spencer Newharth
I like Mary Tyler more because it was Minneapolis. She was there.
Randall Brody
Sure.
Max
I watched a lot of I Dream of Genie Brady, Lucy.
Logan
We talk more about this boat. Did the island. What boat fail them and that. Is that why they're stuck on the island?
Spencer Newharth
What?
Corey Logan
Well, if you knew the song, you'd know what happened. Well, it's.
Randall Brody
The skipper had a boat and they.
Spencer Newharth
Were supposed to be on what, a three hour tour? Three tour. And then what happens? There's a storm, right?
Randall Brody
Yeah.
Spencer Newharth
Okay. And for some reason this tropical island they wash up on, it has a lot of monkeys, Right? Or am I thinking of a different show?
Corey Logan
I don't remember getting harassed by monkeys.
Randall Brody
Lord, how. Right. Who's the aristocratic character?
Corey Logan
Ginger and Mary Ann. Or was it the Professor?
Randall Brody
The Professor.
Corey Logan
Professor and Marianne.
Randall Brody
Yeah. There's. If you on Love on the Spectrum, I think one of the seasons of Love on the Spectrum, one of the guys loves Gilligan's island and he goes to a Comic Con convention to meet the actress who played Marianne from. And it's. I mean, I'm surprised she's alive, but it looks great.
Max
We need to bring back TV theme songs where they just explain the entire process.
Spencer Newharth
It's pretty convenient.
Max
It's very convenient.
Spencer Newharth
You can tune in at any time. Then I know what's going on. I'm almost certain that like gorillas were weirdly on that island.
Corey Logan
You probably right. I mean, I.
Spencer Newharth
Again, the question is question eight. The topic is fishing. What was the name of the Wheeler Playmate 38 boat from Gilligan's Island. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Tressa saying Aloha. Corey says SS Susie. Randall says SS Minnow. Logan says Little Skipper.
Corey Logan
It was little buddy Logan.
Spencer Newharth
Oh. Max says little g. Brody says SS Minnow. The correct answer is the SS Minnow. The original owner of the 38 foot boat called it the Blue Jacket. But the show renamed it after TV producer New Newton Minnow. The Wheeler Playmate is the same model that Ernest Hemingway owned which he equipped without rigors for fishing. On that very boat, he caught one of his biggest tuna and wrote the Old man in the sea.
Brody Henderson
What does SS mean in like.
Spencer Newharth
Is it like service ship or ship Captain Randall? And it technically wasn't an ss. It should have been like an MT Motor. Motor. I don't remember.
Max
This is Google AI, so take it with a grain of salt. But it says it's an acronym for screw steamer.
Spencer Newharth
Maybe it technically it was not an ss. Like that's, that's designated.
Corey Logan
It would have been an B, maybe fishing vessel. Yeah, it was something like that.
Max
Yeah, it's just a single screw steamship.
Spencer Newharth
Okay, Phil, we have two questions left. Give us a scoreboard update.
Logan
Let's take a look.
Corey Logan
Oh, I thought that was the end.
Max
Everyone's on the board now. Tressa and Logan have one point, Max has two, Corey has three, Randall has six. And still two points ahead is Brody Henderson with eight points and a perfect game.
Brody Henderson
Wow.
Logan
Hot dog.
Spencer Newharth
Question nine. The topic is cooking. McCormick describes this six letter spice as quote, sweet, peppery and a bit floral with a hint of citrus. McCormick describes this six letter spice as sweet, peppery and a bit floral with a hint of citrus. Phil, I like the Brady Bunch movie a lot more than I like the Brady Bunch.
Max
Oh, yeah, Well, I mean, that was. That was a great idea because the Brady Bunch movie was just like a. Pretty much a spoof of the Brady Bunch because it was the Brady Bunch living in modern times, if I'm correct. So it was like all of their TV sitcom mannerisms in the real world.
Spencer Newharth
And I think they went to Hawaii and there was like a cursed.
Max
That was a real episode of the Brady Bunch. Oh, the Hawaii episode with the cursed. Cursed, like tiki statue or whatever the hell it was.
Spencer Newharth
Got all my Nick at night mixed up. Again, we're on question nine. Brody, who has the perfect game going, does not yet have it.
Corey Logan
I'm struggling on this one.
Spencer Newharth
McCormick describes this six letter spice as sweet, peppery and a bit floral with a hint of citrus.
Corey Logan
Is this one that everyone has in their cupboard? Spencer?
Spencer Newharth
I don't know. I do not know. Does anybody feel good about their answer? Corey?
Logan
No. No, not yet.
Spencer Newharth
McCormick describes this six letter spice as sweet, peppery and a bit floral with a hint of citrus.
Logan
Citrus.
Spencer Newharth
This may be a zero percenter and Rune Brody's perfect game.
Brody Henderson
I already tried that. More than six letters.
Logan
Oh, is it?
Spencer Newharth
This is question nine.
Randall Brody
Real stumper here. Jeez.
Spencer Newharth
But if Randall could get this right and Brody get it wrong, we'd have a game. Going into the final question, Brody now has an answer. Brody, do you like your answer?
Corey Logan
It's got six letters.
Spencer Newharth
Okay. McCormick describes this six letter spice as sweet, peppery and a bit floral with a hint of citrus. Randall, do you have an answer?
Randall Brody
Yeah, I do. I don't really know. You can get it in a spice. Yeah. I'm not sure if I believe this.
Logan
Keep going.
Randall Brody
Long story short, I'm not sure if this is a spice.
Spencer Newharth
Okay. Do our other players give up category?
Brody Henderson
No.
Randall Brody
But.
Logan
Yeah.
Spencer Newharth
Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Tressa saying Mesquite. Cordy. Without an answer, Randall says ginger. Logan says Cayenne. Max. Without an answer, Brody says garlic. The correct answer is Ginger. Got that one right. Ginger.
Randall Brody
Deliberately Gilligan's Island.
Spencer Newharth
But it was very ironic that that somebody said Ginger was one of the characters.
Max
Also, Randall's the only one who got it right.
Randall Brody
Yes.
Max
Anyway, sorry.
Spencer Newharth
Ginger. Ginger.
Max
Got it. Yeah.
Spencer Newharth
Ginger is a common ingredient in Indian and Caribbean cuisine. The ground product comes from the underground stem of a plant that grows 2 to 4ft tall. Wild ginger is found in 34 states. According to the USDA. It can be identified by its heart shaped leaves and brown flowers that grow at ground level. All right, here's a correct answer review so far. 1. With South Dakota. 2. Estuary. 3. St. Bernard. 4. Lake Superior. 5. Florida. 6. Nevada. 7. Norway. 8. SS Minnow. 9. Ginger. Phil, let's get one final scoreboard update before we do question 10.
Max
Yeah. Like you already said, it's still a game. Now Brody has eight points, Randall has seven.
Spencer Newharth
Question 10.
Randall Brody
Apologize.
Spencer Newharth
Apologize for your earlier skin is hunting. This Brand debuted their seven foot Sasquatch archery target at the 2017 ATA Show.
Corey Logan
This question is dumb.
Spencer Newharth
Spencer, this brand debuted.
Max
I'm excited.
Spencer Newharth
Seven foot Sasquatch archery target at the 2017 ATA Show. Brody, our leader, does not yet have an answer. But neither does Randall, who is one point behind. Corey, do you think you have this one right?
Randall Brody
50.
Logan
50.
Spencer Newharth
Okay.
Logan
Just throwing it out there.
Spencer Newharth
This Brand debuted their seven foot Sasquatch archery target at the 2017 ATA Show. If Randle could get this right and Brody get this wrong, we would snap our overtime drought. But it looks like right now that Randle is not going to get it right and neither will Brody. Max, you like your answer?
Brody Henderson
It's the only one I could think of.
Spencer Newharth
Okay. Did you put down Dave Smith decoys?
Brody Henderson
No.
Tressa
10.
Brody Henderson
I did not.
Spencer Newharth
This brand debuted their seven foot Sasquatch archery target at the 2017 ATA show.
Randall Brody
Corey, let me see what you have.
Brody Henderson
Well, no, I don't know.
Logan
I want to go there.
Spencer Newharth
Randall, do you have an answer down? Randall? No, I know.
Brody Henderson
Brody out.
Randall Brody
Just. It's just not my. My forte here.
Spencer Newharth
Okay. Brody now. Now has an answer. Brody, do you like yours? No. Max, do you like.
Corey Logan
It's an answer.
Brody Henderson
Same one as mine.
Spencer Newharth
Oh, wow. All right.
Logan
Oh, man. I kind of want to show you what I got.
Randall Brody
Now I'm real close.
Max
I want to see.
Logan
Well, there's maybe one letter.
Brody Henderson
You can't show it.
Spencer Newharth
Yeah, yeah.
Tressa
No. Let's see if this overtime happens naturally.
Spencer Newharth
How many points do we get if.
Logan
We get it right and they get it wrong?
Spencer Newharth
Still one five points. This brand debuted their seven foot Sasquatch archery target at the 2017 ATA Show. Is everybody ready?
Brody Henderson
Brody gave me a half a point last game I played.
Spencer Newharth
Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Tressa saying Caldwell. Corey says Delta. Randall says Jack Links. Logan says Reinhardt. Max says Block. Brody says Block. We have a correct answer. It's Reinhardt. And that makes Brody our winner.
Corey Logan
Never got married.
Brody Henderson
Yeah, I've never even heard that before.
Spencer Newharth
The Sasquatch stands 7ft tall, weighs 250 pounds, and costs $4,300. It's by far the biggest and most expensive 3D target that Reinhardt sells. Other unique offerings from them include a mosquito target, Velociraptor target, African lion target, black Cobra target, and alligator target. That makes Brody our winner with eight correct answers. He got the Shelby index right on the nose. Brody, where is the $500 from Meat Eater going to go?
Corey Logan
Well, you boys are headed to the National Wild Turkey Federation shindig, so let's. Let's donate it to those guys.
Spencer Newharth
Okay, 500 going to NWTF via Brody and meat Eater. You got some turkey hunts planned this year, Brody?
Corey Logan
Well, I mean, I'm definitely gonna go. I haven't ironed out any details. I got two kids with that can hunt now. Man, it's like.
Brody Henderson
It's fun watching them go.
Spencer Newharth
They both got dibs on pulling the trigger. Over you.
Corey Logan
Yeah, yeah. First, you know, I'm so excited about it.
Spencer Newharth
That's why me and Randall are dads. We're too selfish.
Corey Logan
It's like a lot, man. You're like, like everybody in Montana. Everyone's like, I'm gonna fill all five of my tags this year or whatever. It's like, good luck, man.
Spencer Newharth
I got.
Corey Logan
I don't even know if I'm going to get to hunt.
Brody Henderson
Do they shoot 20s or 12 20s?
Corey Logan
I don't even shoot at 12 at turkeys anymore. There's no need, man.
Brody Henderson
No, there's no need.
Spencer Newharth
But Brody sending $500 to NWTF so his boys can kill all them turkeys.
Corey Logan
That's right.
Spencer Newharth
Join us next week for more Meat eater trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins.
Randall Brody
Thanks, Spencer.
Spencer Newharth
Good one. Yeah, Spencer from South Dakota, he's the host.
Corey Logan
Using those smooth, mellow tones, he lays them questions down.
Spencer Newharth
And he likes taking those two and three year old bucks.
Corey Logan
And he's an avid amateur rock hound.
Stephen Rinella
Hey, American history buffs. Hunting history buffs, listen up. We're back at it with another volume of our Meat Eaters American History series. In this edition, titled the Mountain Men 1806-1840, we tackle the Rocky Mountain beaver trade and dive into the lives and legends of fellows like Jim Bridger, Jed Smith and John Coulter.
