It's a Meat Eater podcast. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Giannis Botelis. The says Spencer Newhart.
Spencer Newhart
I noticed that too.
Giannis Patelis
Sorry, we're not gonna start again. I'm still Giannis Patelis. And today we're joined by Spencer Randall Brody, Cal Roman Reeva, and Eric Hamburg. Eric, this is your first time on the show. Tell folks what you do here at Meat Eater.
Eric Hamburg
I work at the Meat Eater store in downtown and I go to college at Montana State.
Cal Roman
You grow a lot of hair, too.
Eric Hamburg
It looks like that's what I'm known for. Yep.
Brody
I was wondering if it was one of those hats that just has the hair. Wondering where you can find one?
Eric Hamburg
Yeah, the first time. The first time Steve met me, he referred to me as the kid that needed a haircut.
Reva
That's devastating.
Giannis Patelis
Are you old enough to be dating? Yeah.
Cal Roman
Yes, you are.
Giannis Patelis
Do you feel like the hair helps you in the in dating world or the other direction?
Eric Hamburg
I've had the same girlfriend for almost two years and she has curly hair, too, so I'd say it helped.
Spencer Newhart
Okay, nice.
Reva
What age do you think you need to be to start dating, Yanni?
Giannis Patelis
Oh, I don't know. Somewhere in early to mid high school, I guess.
Reva
Okay, so college.
Brody
So college.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah.
Cal Roman
He was already telling me the other day to keep my boy away from his daughter and they're like, super young.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah, my girls like to talk about boys. I don't know if your boys like to talk about girls. Oh, yeah. Yeah. All right.
Reva
Eric said they listened to. They put all the trivias on the TV at the store and he said it's usually a pretty poor performance. Though who's the best at the store?
Eric Hamburg
I'd say Cade. We had high hopes for Cade and he showed up.
Spencer Newhart
Yeah, he got four but strong start.
Eric Hamburg
See? We'll see.
Spencer Newhart
Made a strong start.
Giannis Patelis
How do you usually do. What are your. What's your gut say you're gonna do today?
Eric Hamburg
I get a lot of random questions right. Like the ones that people in the store don't get right. I usually get right. But we'll see. I'm known as the slow one in the store, but.
Reva
The hairy one and the slow one.
Spencer Newhart
A promising.
Giannis Patelis
I like a humble fella.
Spencer Newhart
A promising resume.
Giannis Patelis
This is a 10 round quiz show with questions from meat eaters. Four verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking. And there's a prize. Meat eater will donate $500 to the Conservation organization of the winner's choosing. Now on to stats for the stat of the week. We're looking at scores from previous times I hosted the first two times, the average player score was 3.3. Those hard questions, the average winning score was 6. But last time I hosted, the average player score was 4.4 and the winning score was 9.
Reva
What do you think the winning score will be today? You said there's no Jennifer index.
Giannis Patelis
No, but man, I really felt like I was. I was trying to. I almost went 100% multiple choice.
Reva
Oh, yeah.
Giannis Patelis
To really make it just nothing but softballs. You'd always have one out of four chance.
Spencer Newhart
You know, you wanted the smartest class in the school, man, the saw.
Cal Roman
I don't know if the multiple choice is like an automatic softball unless you wrote them that well.
Giannis Patelis
It makes you feel good though. I feel like playing. You're like, I got one out of four right. No one has to show a blank board.
Cal Roman
Like, I feel like Spencer used to write the multiple choice question as a softball. But I don't think that's the case anymore.
Reva
That's. It's usually the last question to come in a script. And so if I need a harder question in there, then there you go, then it's harder. And if it's an easy round or excuse me, if it's a hard round, then I'll make it easier. So.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, I wrote this whole thing between the hours of like midnight and nine today. So I don't have all that. I'm kidding. But I still didn't write it quite as detailed as Spencer would have. All right, on to ifaq, which stands for infrequently asked questions segment. Or as I refer to it, the Spencer wants to talk about a subject but is unsure if the crew will think it's cool segment. If you have a trivia related question for our crew, send it to trivia themeateer.com with the subject line if a Q in caps ifa Q. But don't get your hopes up because unless Spencer also is interested in your question, we're probably not going to air it.
Reva
Well, one a week. One a week.
Giannis Patelis
So this question comes from Bob Burns, probably a name Spencer made up on episode 653. You have a question about military land? I am active duty at Fort Stewart and was wondering if anyone at Meat Eater has ever hunted military land. I do often. But was wondering about your take on it.
Cal Roman
I have not.
Giannis Patelis
No.
Cal Roman
You have though, haven't you?
Giannis Patelis
No.
Reva
Oh, I never have.
Spencer Newhart
I never had.
Cal Roman
I shouldn't.
Giannis Patelis
Well, yeah, no, no one in here. I have a friend that does a bunch. He's actually, he's also stationed at a. At a. I don't know if it's called a base or a Ford or whatever but because he knows about the system he's always like oh yeah, I was in Texas hunting this military place installation and we went on a trip in California and hunted. This sounds like there's good opportunities, but no one. Randall, you've never done anything?
Spencer Newhart
No, never. I mean I'm familiar with some of the opportunities, but I've never done it myself.
Reva
One of the things I'd say as someone who's never hunted it is that there's like a few more hoops to jump through which eliminates some folks from like going through that process. Similar to in Montana you have private land that becomes public access through the BMA program. And there's two types and one type requires more legwork than the other one and that one tends to keep more people out and I'm sure military ground is the same way, just be my guess.
Giannis Patelis
Anybody else got anything to say about that?
Spencer Newhart
Cal, you're a well traveled fellow. I've well versed in all.
Brody
Probably a lot of people who have hunted Montana have hunted on military land. It just isn't a full functioning base anymore.
Giannis Patelis
I heard about one recently in Montana, but I'm not going to mention it for fear of blowing up a spot.
Brody
Yeah, I wouldn't do that either. Yeah, no, there, there's. We got quite a ways down the permissions rabbit hole to hunt on the military installation in Guam last year.
Giannis Patelis
Wow.
Brody
Yeah.
Giannis Patelis
What were you gonna hunt there?
Brody
So we were gonna hunt pigs. And what do they have there? A fallow deer? No. What's the yeah, maybe it is a fallow deer. Yeah. Yep, yep, yep. Real easy to do with archery equipment. You definitely gotta jump through some more hoops and. And then, you know. So like ibex did Steve do on base?
Giannis Patelis
He didn't.
Brody
He did off base. Or oryx.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah, he was off.
Brody
One thing that you have to do is you have to take an ordinance test so you can be like, oh, that's ordinance on the ground. I need to tell people where it is and avoid it. It's a little test.
Giannis Patelis
Ooh, that's spooky.
Spencer Newhart
Yeah, a little bit of a hoop.
Giannis Patelis
Don't walk around in the dark. Oh, look, another ifaq. This one sent in from Albert Gallatin.
Phil
Huh?
Spencer Newhart
Secretary of the Treasury.
Reva
Wow. I don't know.
Giannis Patelis
It's almost like someone just made this up. Al asks, are you guys going to have any new cooking content soon? I haven't seen a good cooking show since. Pardon my plate.
Phil
That one was okay.
Giannis Patelis
Thanks, Bill. Just so happens, Al, that. Yeah. We just released the first episode of a new show called Meat Eater Roast where we have a couple of our very own every day Wild Game culinary enthusiasts.
Reva
I heard you insult Brody with that term.
Giannis Patelis
Well, no, I changed it to he now is approving. If you.
Reva
What did you say before?
Giannis Patelis
Would you say I was calling them ordinary.
Spencer Newhart
Ordinary.
Giannis Patelis
Ordinary cooks in the kitchen. But they compete against each other. They have an unknown chunk of Wild Game to cook in a short amount of time. And then we have a couple judges who sort of roast them, help them along. The first episode just aired was Cal V. Brody and we had Jesse Griffiths and Rinella judging. And so far it's been. Feedback's been great on it.
Reva
So what day of the week these drop?
Giannis Patelis
No idea.
Brody
Thursday. You are the host of YouTube, Spencer. Just get on YouTube.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah, the first one dropped, but now I've heard that there aren't. Are the forthcoming ones are being pushed a little ways until we figure out some sponsorship maybe about who. Who wants to attach their name to this fine show.
Spencer Newhart
No one's going to want to sponsor my episode.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, no. It's going to be the hottest one. Are you kidding me?
Brody
I heard from several people in the room that having nothing, nobody mentioned the cooking at all, but they. They all mentioned the fun.
Reva
Oh, me and Randall's episode, we. We set a beer drinking record that episode for Meat Eater Roast.
Spencer Newhart
I don't think we should brag about that because it really wasn't that many beers.
Reva
We can break that record next time we're on there again.
Spencer Newhart
Yeah.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, goodness. So yeah. Go to our YouTube channel and check.
Reva
Out Meat Eater Roasts first episode at Cal V. Brody.
Giannis Patelis
That's right. We'll have more coming soon. All right, for today's housekeeping, I'm going to throw it to Spencer for the announcement he teased last week.
Reva
Spencer, we have a new game on our website. If you're familiar with our website, you might know that we have crossword puzzles that come out every Wednesday. And they are crossword puzzles from the meater universe that cover topics like hunting, fishing, the outdoors, national parks, conservation, wild game, things like that. And you compete against Randall in those crossword puzzles. We have a new game. It's going to come out every single Monday. It's called Meat Eater Turtle. It's a lot like Wordle, but it's better. Meat Eater Turtle has a five letter word that you get six tries to solve. It will give you help along the way. If your letter is yellow, that means you have the right letter in the wrong spot. If it's green, you have the right letter in the right spot. If it's gray, then that letter is not in the word at all. And this is a way to give another game to people who share our dictionary as outdoorsmen. So comes out every single Monday. Giannis is the person that you're going to be competing against in Meat Eater Turtle. But for the first one, which comes out April 7, the whole crew is going to play that one. We're going to reveal their scores on an upcoming episode of Media to Radio and you'll see if you can beat them. That first category is an animal. It's a five letter word word. That's an animal. Go play it the meater.com games.
Brody
Did you see the flaw I found?
Reva
Cal sent a screenshot that it didn't accept Oscar. It doesn't like proper nouns, but I would argue with the game on on your behalf, Cal, that Oscar is also a fish.
Spencer Newhart
Yeah.
Reva
So it should have taken that very.
Brody
Relevant fish because it's a invasive in a lot of areas. Great aquarium fish, spearfish. Oh, that's the problem.
Spencer Newhart
It's a great.
Brody
Used to be a great aquarium and people let it go.
Reva
So that's, that's one help. That'll be one hint for you playing Meat Eater Turtle.
Brody
Don't, don't.
Reva
Don't put in their Oscar.
Brody
Oscar.
Reva
And don't put in other proper nouns and don't.
Giannis Patelis
When you're done with your Oscars, don't just chuck them out into the wild where you've been testing the game on others. Besides Me. Where have I been stacking up?
Reva
We're going to reveal that on an upcoming episode of Meteor radio. The whole, the whole crew. We're going to have 10 scores revealed how everybody did See.
Giannis Patelis
Now the fact that it's within our universe hasn't really been helping me. I still play it like I would play wordle.
Reva
Okay, that could be one strategy for you.
Spencer Newhart
I, I, I, I beg to differ.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah, it might be different for you.
Spencer Newhart
When you have a category that's animals and you have five letters, you think of as many five letter animals.
Reva
That's right.
Giannis Patelis
Well, I guess it depends. Is it, is it rating you on speed or.
Reva
Tries spe and tries things.
Brody
Randall's trying. Do you think those markers are free, young man?
Spencer Newhart
This one's getting.
Brody
Why don't you, why don't you just use all of it right now? Messing with your name.
Giannis Patelis
He likes the smell of them.
Brody
Show everybody what you're doing.
Spencer Newhart
I paid the bills around this place.
Reva
So one more time go to theme eater.com games. You'll have turtle on Mondays, crosswords on Wednesdays.
Spencer Newhart
Thanks for all the fun you bring into our lives, Spencer.
Reva
Thank you.
Brody
Randall.
Giannis Patelis
We're on to question one.
Reva
Oh, you gotta tell. Tell him to play the drop.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, play the drop. He said he was ready.
Phil
Yeah, I lied to you. Hold on a second. Here we go.
Giannis Patelis
We can't have it without this.
Reva
Look, I need to know what I stand to win.
Giannis Patelis
Everything. How's that?
Eric Hamburg
You stand to win everything. Game on, suckers.
Giannis Patelis
Question 1. Blends hunting and conservation. According to the Boone and Crockett Club, what is the average inside spread of a typical Boone and Crockett mule deer buck? Is it 21, 22, 23 or 24 inches? Now, I rounded this up to the nearest whole number because the answer actually has a fraction next to it. I don't think that's going to help you guys, but I just wanted to be clear on that again. The question is, according to the Boone and Crockett Club, what is the average inside spread of a typical Boone and Crockett mule deer buck? Is it 21, 22, 23 or 24 inches?
Reva
Brody, have you ever killed a Boone or Muley one?
Giannis Patelis
No.
Reva
Do you know it spread?
Giannis Patelis
Which one?
Cal Roman
That one from a long time ago in Colorado. That real heavy one. It's a minimum, you know? Yeah, the minimum.
Reva
Do you know it's spread not.
Cal Roman
It didn't make. It's not very wide.
Reva
No. Okay.
Cal Roman
It's like massive long tines.
Giannis Patelis
Cal's got a record to show that.
Brody
When Brody did his hand mass measurement, it was like larger than a Stanley Thermos.
Cal Roman
I'll bring it in, show you. It's like baseball bats, man. That's what got it over the edge.
Brody
Louisville Slugger diameter.
Giannis Patelis
You killed one with your dad about that same time period.
Cal Roman
No, my dad killed one.
Giannis Patelis
No, that's what I mean. Sorry. Like you were with your dad when he killed one giant. That was about. That was probably a minimum too, right?
Cal Roman
No, that one, that one my dad killed was over 200.
Reva
Whoa.
Giannis Patelis
Did you.
Cal Roman
I was a. Yeah, I was mad.
Reva
That's good. I'd like to hear about that buck after this show.
Cal Roman
Oh, sure.
Giannis Patelis
Does everybody have an answer?
Brody
Yeah.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, go ahead and reveal your answers. Roman going 22 inches. Cal, 22. 2, 22. Eric. 23. Randall. 23. Spencer. 24. Reva, 22. Brody. 22. We do have one correct answer.
Brody
24.
Giannis Patelis
To be exact, it is 2378. Oh, so Spencer is the only correct answer. 24. I spoke with Jennifer Statin of Boone and Crockett and asked her what the average width was. She took data from 21 states to find this number. Interestingly, the average inside spread of a non typical from the out of the same Data set was 23, 4 8. That's 3, 8 shorter than the typical.
Reva
There are 21 states that have Boone and Crockett mule deer entries correct.
Giannis Patelis
Amando?
Brody
There are. Yeah. I find that still to this day people measure the outside spread of a mule deer.
Giannis Patelis
Listen. But when I first started scoring anything, I was measuring inside and outside and applying both those numbers.
Cal Roman
Like a buck has a six inch tangle.
Spencer Newhart
You probably had a line of people standing outside your house getting you to measure.
Reva
I. I went with 24 because we went with to the. The antler King collection in three fourths. What was his. Was it the antler king or was it something.
Giannis Patelis
Oh boy, I don't remember.
Reva
But he's got like one of the world's biggest collection of antlers in that whole dang shed. I think he said he had two muleys that went Boone and Crockett. And there were some giant muleys in there.
Phil
Jim. Jim's horn house.
Reva
There you go.
Phil
I think Jim has since passed a.
Brody
Mule deer buck alive rutting a dough this year that had split his skull plate. And so his.
Cal Roman
He has wide rag.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah.
Brody
Literally as one antler was hanging down Rumpalo buck. And I was like, I should shoot that thing because the inside spread on that thing's probably 30 inches.
Reva
That'd be good.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah, right. But when you score them, the inside spread can't exceed the length of the longest main beam.
Cal Roman
And I think it wouldn't count if his was broken. The skull plate.
Brody
I think it has to.
Reva
I think that'd be hard to argue. I don't know.
Giannis Patelis
It would depend on if it's still broken or if it's been fused.
Brody
I watched him. It wasn't flopping, so. Yep.
Giannis Patelis
Man, a lot to unpack with that story. All right, we're on to question two. This one also falls into hunting. Which camouflage first appeared on First Lights, hunting clothing.
Reva
Do you know this, Cal?
Brody
I damn sure better.
Giannis Patelis
Which camouflage first appeared on first lights clothing? So what I'm looking for is, like, what camouflage pattern was the first one that first slide ever used? I remember it. Reva, what's so funny about that question?
Brody
This is something that I should at least have some answer for.
Spencer Newhart
No, Right? You really shouldn't.
Giannis Patelis
I mean, no, you know, some, but.
Spencer Newhart
This is pattern for your time.
Brody
Are you saying you can't name a single camouflage pattern? Is that what you're saying?
Giannis Patelis
Well, I just thought of one.
Brody
Okay, great. So I wrote.
Reva
Oh, there you go.
Brody
Yeah, that was the hang up.
Reva
So do you have this one right? California.
Brody
I. I know exactly what's right.
Reva
Okay.
Spencer Newhart
Yeah, I was gonna say this is sort of a.
Reva
This is a bone for Cal.
Spencer Newhart
This is a bone for the.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, geez.
Spencer Newhart
The first employee of First Light.
Giannis Patelis
I didn't know that he was gonna. Well, and I guess it was in. In the script here that I did know that Cal was gonna be here.
Cal Roman
But old pair of bibs in this stuff, and I still can't remember what it's called.
Giannis Patelis
Like, this is interesting timing as camo's coming back in the fashion world. I'm seeing this pattern, the one I've written down. Hold on, it's just coming back now. Where have you been, Roman?
Cal Roman
This one's very fashionable too.
Giannis Patelis
Brody, do you have something written down?
Cal Roman
Yeah.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, okay. Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
Reva
Oh, I got it.
I
Right.
Giannis Patelis
Roman. Cal. Say asap. Eric. Mossy Oak. Randall. Asat. Spencer. Bottomlands, which is a Mossy Oak pattern. Riva Cash, which is the First Light pattern? Brody. Asat. The correct answer is asat. Asat, which stands for all season. All terrain was First Lights, first camel pattern. I texted with Kenton Carruth, one of First Light's founders, to make sure I had this right. I asked him, why asap? He replied, well, we liked ASAP and Predator the best. And ASAT called us back first. That's how it happens when you're a young company.
Reva
Is ASAT the one that just looks like branches? Kind of.
Giannis Patelis
It's just like, it's almost like a. Yeah, some people would say almost.
Spencer Newhart
It's like three colors.
Brody
A bad tribal tattoo was often described.
Reva
Sure.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah. You're just gonna go hide in a cattail marsh.
Spencer Newhart
In the summer of 2011, I placed an order for a bunch of first light product in Realtree, I believe. And I got a call saying, hey, all that stuff is out of stock, but what you're gonna want is this ace hat stuff.
Cal Roman
Was Cal on the other end of.
Spencer Newhart
The line and he said, he said, oh, I see her in Missoula. I used to live in Missoula. I said, oh, cool. And then years later I remembered that.
Reva
Was Cal at a hot dog stand.
Spencer Newhart
No, no, we met, we introduced ourselves the first time at a hot dog stand.
Reva
Okay.
Giannis Patelis
I'm personally a big fan of asat, and I think that the pattern suffered from simply not being hip enough to the human eye, where a lot of other patterns that do not break you up as well as ASAP does. Does don't work in the variety of terrains that ASAP does have sold way more items of clothing, whatever that's been put on, because we as humans just like it better.
Brody
You used to say fashion over function.
Giannis Patelis
I'm a function guy. I, I, I would use it if it was still available.
Reva
Yeah, it's like fishing lures that, that catch fishermen, not fish.
I
I'm telling you, man, there's nothing quite like. It gives me chubby just thinking about it. You hit the call, and way off in the distance, a tom fires back. You work him in, watching his body language shift from cautious to committed. Then that moment, the one every turkey hunter dreams about all winter. Zach Gobbler locks eyes on your decoy and comes running in. And if you're using the right decoy, you don't need to then settle for a 40 yard nervous shot. Because with the right decoy, you can get that bird in your lap, putting on a wild, aggressive turkey show. I mean, I'm talking where he's fighting the decoy. I've had him sitting there trying to mate with the decoy. It's the best thing in the world. But to pull it off, you need realism like you need decoys that don't just fool turkeys at a distance. You want a decoy that fools him when he's up there at point blank range beating the snot out of it. That is why Die Hard Turkey hunters insist on Dave Smith decoys. Their unmatched realism fools even the wariest of toms into thinking they're staring and fighting a real bird. And unlike inflatable decoys that crumble when shot, DSDs are built tough. They last season after season, even if you screw up and put a little TSS into one of them. To top it all off, every DSD turkey decoy is made right here in the good old US of A. Made in America. Check out the full lineup at Dave Smith decoys.com and take your turkey hunts to the next level.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, on to question number three. A brace of birds is how many. So I'm asking you to tell me how many birds would be in a brace of birds.
Reva
What's the category?
Giannis Patelis
Hunting. Interesting. I thought this would be a little bit.
Cal Roman
I thought so too.
Giannis Patelis
Brody never. Brody had it very quickly. You've never heard the term brace?
Reva
No.
Giannis Patelis
Oh.
Spencer Newhart
I've heard it.
Giannis Patelis
Riva.
Brody
Nope.
Giannis Patelis
Cal certainly has, the upland hunter that he is.
Brody
Oh, yeah, but I didn't know that. Yeah, I don't know what it is.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, gosh. This one has actually. I've kicked it down the. I have a little notes thing in my phone with all my trivia questions and when they come to me, I pop them in there. And I've kicked this one down before because I thought everybody's gonna know this one. So I'm glad I pulled it out.
Cal Roman
I like it.
Giannis Patelis
Again, question three, A brace of birds is how many less.
Cal Roman
I have it wrong.
Reva
Good on you, Yanni. Saying the question again. Oh, that's good hosting.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, thank you. I like feedback from hosting. So listeners out there, you know, in the comments, throw it down. No. Logan Williamson took the time to send me a quick text and say that he thought that last week's Media Radio Live was well hosted. I was very appreciative.
Reva
Oh, now I'm offended. But Logan's never texted me there.
Giannis Patelis
Well, yeah, but you set the bar, you know, and so it's hard to.
Reva
Be a. Yeah.
Giannis Patelis
I just had a. I just had a shining moment, you know.
Reva
Okay, good clapping.
Giannis Patelis
Roman going to say we get a decent amount of emails talking about hosts, but I don't know if I should share that feedback. Uhoh. All right, does everybody have an answer? Those of you that are going to have one, go ahead and reveal them, please. Roman, 18. Cal, three. Eric, four. Randall, three. Spencer, two. Reva, 20. Brody, two. We do have two correct answers. The answer is two.
Brody
That's why I had it written down first. But that doesn't make any sense.
Giannis Patelis
Now. I couldn't really find any interesting flavor text about a brace of birds, although the term is commonly used in conjunction with the process of hanging birds, specifically pheasants. And what I found too, that is that often a brace is not only a pair, but that it would be one female and one male, which really wouldn't happen in our country much with pheasants. I guess if you're maybe on a game farm, you can shoot them there. But Hank Shaw wrote a great article on hanging birds on his website, Hunt, Gather, cook. His takeaway hanging works. You're going to get awesome meats, awesome skin. You just got to do it right. Three to seven days at 50 to 55 degrees.
Cal Roman
Guts in or out?
Giannis Patelis
Guts in.
Reva
Is this exclusive to upland or would you be like a brace of mallards came into the decoys.
Giannis Patelis
You can use it for waterfowl.
Reva
Okay, how about turkeys? Like a brace of braceletons?
Giannis Patelis
I mean, I don't see what basically the definition was. Any, any bird that was shot for like sport or food where I've heard.
Cal Roman
It often is like, I brought home a brace of birds.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah.
Spencer Newhart
Brace of pheasants.
Giannis Patelis
There you go.
Brody
I don't like the guts in.
Cal Roman
Neither do I. Not with shotgun pellets. Busted up guts.
Brody
That's the problem is as. That as things start to break down, which the whole point of. Of hanging is, you know, like letting that carcass start to degrade. If you have a little pathway created by a pellet that goes from, you know, the good thigh meat or from the. The breast meat into the body cavity, the pressure of that bird breaking down even at 50 degrees is going to get that stomach juice up into that meat and render it inedible.
Giannis Patelis
I agree.
Brody
I pull the guts out.
Giannis Patelis
There you go. Appreciate the input, Cal. Pull. He's. Cal says pull the guts out. All right, on to question four. This one is also in the hunting category. What does the acronym DOPE stand for when used in shooting? Randall, as I thought would be quick to write an answer.
Reva
I think we've had this question before.
Phil
I. I really don't think we have, Spencer.
Giannis Patelis
Nah, we'll be fine.
Phil
Spreadsheet.
Reva
Yeah.
Giannis Patelis
We're still having fun, right?
Reva
That's right.
Giannis Patelis
Roman's thinking. Cal's thinking.
Spencer Newhart
What does the acronym dope when used in shooting stand for?
Giannis Patelis
Thanks, Randall.
Spencer Newhart
I got some real. The first time I hosted writing, I saw a lot of really nasty comments about how I didn't repeat the questions. Oh yeah, they said, how stupid do you have to be to not read them twice.
Phil
I just. I just command after the spreadsheet. Spencer and I did not find anything.
Cal Roman
Okay, I have no idea what this is.
Reva
Oh, maybe it's appeared in a crossword. Maybe that's could be why I know I've read it somewhere. Next week Randall is hosting. So if yes, give some feedback to him too.
Spencer Newhart
Prime your feedback.
Reva
That's right.
Giannis Patelis
And now Randall, my flavor text is basically throwing this to you. So you have now a few seconds to prepare as we wait for the rest of these folks to write their answers.
Cal Roman
So you wrote the question knowing he would get it right and have something to say about it?
Giannis Patelis
Heck yeah. Look how.
Cal Roman
Well I don't know about that. Spencer, what's.
Spencer Newhart
What's your surreal three dimensional chess he's playing here?
Reva
I mean it's better than asking about first lights versus camel pattern to the first lights first employee.
Cal Roman
Yeah, you got one in there. Like what is my second son's middle name?
Giannis Patelis
Not quite. I wouldn't know that one.
Cal Roman
I know, but you should ask it.
Reva
Yanni and Randall gracious enough to host for me because I have some deadlines coming up. One of them was meat eater Turtle. So please again go play that. We, we worked hard on this is it. You'll enjoy it.
Cal Roman
Is it turtle as in the animal or turdle?
Reva
Turtle is in the animal should be turd.
Spencer Newhart
So if you like turtle but you don't like me hosting, it's just called even.
Giannis Patelis
There you go. All right, does everybody have an answer? That is gonna have an answer. Roman shaking his head no. Go ahead and reveal your answers for the acronym dope. Roman says degrees of elevation. CAL says develop of projectile eject. Eric, data of precise question mark. Randall, data on previous engagements. Spencer, data on previous engagement. Riva dial optics. Peep. I like it. Brody, drop of projectile energy. We do have a couple correct answers in the room. It is data on previous engagements. Randall, what do you know about dope?
Spencer Newhart
Well, yeah.
Brody
Is it based off your previous engagement?
Spencer Newhart
Yeah, yeah. I mean traditionally. So now it's just like a shorthand for any sort of ballistic information. But you know, if you are a serious shooter, you write down what your bullet is doing at any. In any given conditions at any given distance and then you have a record of that. So kids out there don't just trust your phone. If you're going to shoot something at 350 yards, you should have shot a target at 350 yards already. And then you can rely on data from previous engagements rather than just some Number on your phone is being able.
Cal Roman
To hit a paper plate at 50 yards.
Giannis Patelis
Dope.
Spencer Newhart
Nope, nope. Going good enough is not dope.
Giannis Patelis
Well, I would say that it is.
Reva
Because you know data.
Spencer Newhart
You know that you can hit a paper plate of 50 yards.
Cal Roman
That was our dope back in the day. Day.
Reva
Yeah, I mean, I think the day before the season.
Spencer Newhart
I think dope is important because people say dope when they just pull numbers off their phone. But if you've never shot at that distance, you don't actually have real data. It's all hypothetical until lead is in the air.
Reva
So.
Giannis Patelis
And I think you make a really good point about verifying. Even in the apps you have to verify. You can't just go and trust the numbers off the box. Or even if you get the velocity. Like anytime we do that, we then take it out to 500 yards and shoot. And rarely is it spot on. You're still going to make a fine adjustment either to BC or to velocity or whatever it might be to really dial it in.
Spencer Newhart
Yeah. And. And I like to shoot a group at 800 yards and see what it's actually like. Shooting once at 800 yards, you might be in your zone of comfort, but if you shoot three, and this one happens to be top left and the other two are down here, your actual point of impact for your group is off your target. So shoot a lot, shoot often, and pay attention to what you see on the target. Don't just wing it.
Giannis Patelis
I used to have that scribbled down on a piece of paper that was stuck on a bulletin board. It said, like, shoot more, shoot more often.
Spencer Newhart
Yeah, you learn a lot.
Giannis Patelis
It's good for you. All right, on to question 5. Still stuck in the hunting category. Rate these 4 states non resident whitetail deer buck tag prices from most expensive to cheapest. Oklahoma, Ohio, Iowa and Missouri. Again, it's not really a question. Rate these four states, non resident whitetail deer buck tax.
Cal Roman
Have you hunted all four of these?
Reva
I have hunted zero of those, but I'm familiar with all four.
Cal Roman
You haven't hunted Iowa?
Reva
No, I have points. It's on my 2027 docket.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, I have points too.
Reva
When are you going?
Giannis Patelis
Maybe we could go together.
Reva
Nah.
Giannis Patelis
Okay.
Brody
Where are we going?
Reva
How many points do you have and.
Spencer Newhart
Is it a pricing proposition?
Giannis Patelis
I'm at four.
Reva
Yeah, we're different categories. You have more than me. Plus, I imagine you're going to want to do an archery rod hunt, and I'm probably going to want to do like a December gun hunt.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, I Could be persuaded.
Reva
Okay, let's figure it out after this.
Giannis Patelis
Again, the question 5 is Rate these four states non resident whitetail deer buck tag prices from most expensive to cheapest. Oklahoma, Ohio, Iowa and Missouri. Does everybody have these four states listed in order from most expensive to cheapest whitetail deer buck tag, non resident prices.
Phil
I'm trying to use my data and.
Giannis Patelis
Experience from people that have written in from our meat eater community. What do they write in about complaining about how non resident prices are out of control?
Brody
Yeah, I mean, if Montana was on that list, wouldn't be your classic whitetail state, but it would be right. By far and away for a deer tag, right?
Giannis Patelis
Yeah. Yeah.
Cal Roman
Unless you count some of these. Wyoming's special tag.
Spencer Newhart
Yeah, let's not talk.
Reva
I. I wrote down my guess for the price of the tag.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, good. All right.
Reva
Some of these states have a reputation reveal.
Giannis Patelis
Your answer is upside down.
Brody
Because I wrote it down. Didn't want to rewrite.
Giannis Patelis
But it's backwards too. You expect me. Ohio, Iowa.
Brody
What was the other one? Oklahoma and Missouri. So Missouri is the cheapest.
Giannis Patelis
Missouri is the cheapest. Ohio is the most expensive. Roman much more legibly wrote out Iowa, Oklahoma, Ohio, Missouri. Randall. Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ohio. Spencer. Oklahoma, Iowa, Ohio, Missouri. Reva. Iowa, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma. Brody. Iowa, Oklahoma, Missouri, Ohio.
Spencer Newhart
What are you doing to my boy here?
Giannis Patelis
Oh, did I skip you?
Eric Hamburg
Eric might be too short.
Giannis Patelis
Okay. Maybe your board might have been behind your hair. Eric wrote down Iowa, Ohio, Missouri, Oklahoma. I believe, Phil, we have one correct answer.
Phil
We have one correct answer.
Giannis Patelis
It is Oklahoma, Iowa, Ohio, Missouri.
Phil
Spencer Newhart's got it correct.
Giannis Patelis
Oklahoma came in at $708, followed by Iowa at 644, Ohio 400 and Missouri at 288. I was surprised to read how many states have whitetail deer tags. Over 500. I'm used to paying 200 in Wisconsin, which is now I feel like a heck of a deal.
Reva
And is that. Is that like a benefit of being.
Giannis Patelis
No, no, that's just standard price. Montana, like cal was saying 759.
Brody
The other fun thing though is like in Oklahoma, that's three deer. I think you get one buck and two does with that purchase.
Giannis Patelis
So true that you. Yeah. Amongst all this stuff, there's a lot of different variances about how many deer you might.
Reva
Well, you're also required to like have a small game license and something.
Giannis Patelis
I tried to master that in price for the prices, like what it would minimum take to go hunting. And that's. This is what I came up with.
Brody
How many deer can you shoot in Missouri with a deer. It's just a deer license, right? Or do you have a tag?
Giannis Patelis
I. I'm not familiar enough, but they.
Reva
Have a reputation for some of the cheapest tags. I meant Ohio.
Giannis Patelis
The cheapest one I could find was Pennsylvania.
Cal Roman
That's right. 100 bucks.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah. Like a couple dollars over a hundred. Incredible.
Cal Roman
And that's too choos a bunch of.
Reva
Other stuff that's too cheap.
Giannis Patelis
I'd say, man, they're like, come on down.
Cal Roman
They have a million resident hunters. So I just don't. It's like, you know what I mean?
Giannis Patelis
Oh, they're not looking at it like as a real source of revenue because people are like, they're like, they're like, buyer beware. One last thing here. If you're looking to get the best bang for your buck when heading out of state to hunt whitetails, retolding Peterson's article how to find the best value in non resident whitetail tags atthe meat eater.com. all right, that was question five. So now we have a scoreboard update. Phil. Yeah. I'm excited to see this. Spencer seems to do pretty good when I host. He does.
Phil
I would call it suspicious, but I know he has not seen the question.
Giannis Patelis
All right, still without a correct answer, we have Reva and Eric.
Phil
Okay.
Giannis Patelis
Okay.
Phil
Go and take it away.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, sorry. That's fine.
Phil
I don't care.
Giannis Patelis
This is the opportunity for you to.
Reva
Sit back, Yanni, and let it grill.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah.
Cal Roman
Have a drink of water.
Phil
I mean, from what I heard that that sounded great. Better than what I do. Eric and Riva yet to make it on the board with zero points. Coming up next to Roman and Cal with one point a piece. Our usual champs, Randall and Brody are tied up in. Well, I remember. I remember the Spencer where there was an argument. I said I would say tied up in second place. They're actually tied up in third place. And then in first place when they have two points apiece. And in first place, two points ahead of them is Spencer Newharth of four points.
Cal Roman
That was with Randall having a question written specifically for him.
Spencer Newhart
I think we're tied.
Brody
That's a good point. For second.
Giannis Patelis
No.
Phil
I got yelled at by someone online and I looked it up. Like if you have someone in first place and then the next people that.
Spencer Newhart
Are down, see, I think we're tied for second, but Roman and Cal are tied for fourth.
Reva
I agree.
Cal Roman
What do they do in the Olympics when someone ties?
Brody
I don't want you to tie.
Phil
It's the way I just explained it.
Cal Roman
That's what I thought.
Phil
Hey, everyone. Phil the engineer here piping in before I get yelled at by strangers on the Internet to say that, yes, as per usual, Randall Williams is right, and I am, as they say, a big dumb idiot. Randall and Brody are tied up in second place. Then it skips a spot. Roman and Cal are tied up in fourth. Just to clarify these very important details. Now back to the show.
Giannis Patelis
I agree with Brody. Phil's right.
Phil
Thank you.
Giannis Patelis
All right, Phil helped me a little bit on this question.
Spencer Newhart
All good work, Phil.
Phil
Barely.
Giannis Patelis
Question number six could also kind of fall into conservation, but it's a hunting question. Qiviut is the soft underwool of what animal?
Reva
Randall, it's hunting or conservation.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah, Yeah. I don't know.
Spencer Newhart
It's the same category we've been in the whole time. Spencer, back off.
Giannis Patelis
It doesn't have to be a dead animal.
Cal Roman
It's actually textiles is the category.
Giannis Patelis
The question again, is qiviut spelled Q I, V, I, u, T. That's good. Hosting is the soft underwool of what animal? Spencer, do you have an answer?
Reva
I do.
Giannis Patelis
Great.
Spencer Newhart
Phil, how'd you help with this one? Is it. Was it a phrasing issue?
Phil
It was just like a way. A way. No. I would say. I was going to say.
Giannis Patelis
No.
Phil
It was a way to phrase the question, which would make it a phrasing issue.
Brody
Anybody else get that? The feeling that Spencer is a little overconfident in this game. Almost as if he, like, was like, hey, I need to proof your.
Giannis Patelis
That's what it feels like.
Reva
Phil funneled me the. The answers.
Eric Hamburg
Right.
Cal Roman
Although I think Spencer has a very high win ratio because of the very few times that he's played.
Giannis Patelis
Looking to add to that, does everybody have an answer? Roman.
Brody
He's fine.
Giannis Patelis
Go ahead and reveal your answers. Roman says bison. Cal. Muskox. Eric. Dalshi.
Cal Roman
Oh, Spencer slipped up.
Giannis Patelis
Randall. Muskox. Spencer. Bison. Reva. Sheep. Brody. Muskox. The correct answer is muskox sitting right next to it.
Cal Roman
Spencer.
Brody
Spencer, Brody's a little fired up.
Giannis Patelis
Spencer can actually smell the kid story here. I've been trying to get Steve to harvest the kvi from that muskox hide since the day he shot it. Because when we were on Nunavac to hunt that muskox, the guide had this, like, liner beanie made of kivat, and I've never put on anything softer. It's like cashmere on crack. I hope that's a good analogy. If you've ever touched or had a cashmere sweater, extremely soft and you're on crack?
Spencer Newhart
Steroids.
Giannis Patelis
Steroids. It's just extremely soft and literally made your head, like, radiate with warmth when you put it on. And I tried to buy it off the guide, and he. And he refused.
Reva
What was your offer?
Giannis Patelis
I think I offered him, like, 300 bucks. Yeah. Now, listen, if you guys want to hear a longer story about buying hats on Nunavac Island, I'm happy to tell it right now, or we can move on. I'm not watching the. The clock. We're.
Phil
We're already past the. The average trivia length.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, boy. Oh, boy.
Brody
On question six, Giannis was the great millinery trader of the north.
Phil
So apologies to the listeners for that extra ad break you heard earlier in the show.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, that was question six. On to question seven. Little pop culture for you suckers. What 2000 movie features Hubert the Bloodhound and his owner Harlan Pepper? What 2000 movie features Hubert the Bloodhound? Love this movie. Owner Harlan Pepper. I was hoping we'd have a fan in the room. You'll be able to help me with the flavor text. Is this a movie that would be reviewed in Meteor Radio Live?
Reva
Don't give a hint.
Phil
Yeah, let's not answer that.
Brody
Brody should know this.
Giannis Patelis
Randall's writing. Brody does not have an answer. Riva. No.
Brody
Nothing. No, this is a great show.
Giannis Patelis
It is a great, great movie. Yeah.
Brody
Show movie.
Giannis Patelis
We just watched great media. We just. We just watched it this weekend with our kids.
Brody
Oh, no way. What?
Giannis Patelis
The kids think they were into it. It. Well, it's now.
Reva
I don't think you'd watch this movie with your kids.
Brody
I'm gonna.
Giannis Patelis
I'm gonna talk to that point again. The question is, what 2000 movie features Hubert the Bloodhound and his owner, Harlan Pepper? Kids love dogs, especially bloodhounds, and they.
Brody
Have a hound in the house. So.
Giannis Patelis
Brody, do you need more time?
Cal Roman
I have no idea what it is.
Giannis Patelis
All right, folks, reveal your answers. Roman still writing. Roman not gonna give me an answer? Where the Red Fern Grows. Cal. Best in show. Eric Fox and the Hound. Randall. Oh, Where Art Thou, Spencer? Patriot Reva. Without an answer. Brody. Green Mile. We do have a correct answer. It is best in show.
Reva
Never heard of that. That is a good one.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, you've seen it. Oh, good. I've seen it.
Brody
I wasn't even thinking that genre.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, Yeah, I. We watched it with the kids. Everything is cool. Besides the sexual innuendos back in 2000, like, just wasn't a thing that you couldn't do. Those kind of jokes and so it's just constant. Like, you couldn't do comedy without just constant sexual innuendo. So that's a part of it. But the. All the dogs and the characters. Amazing flick. Oh, you want to add anything?
Brody
Well, the. The creator, his. His production company is called Pale Morning. Done. He's a big fly fisherman, comes, you know, spends a bunch of time in Montana. So that was kind of like a thing in the fly fishing guiding world is like, you just.
Phil
You're talking about Christopher Guest.
Brody
Christopher Guest?
Giannis Patelis
Really?
Phil
I had no idea.
Brody
Well, don't you remember the scene where they're talking about flies?
Giannis Patelis
He goes. Yeah.
Phil
He meets with his crew because he's like the one southern guy on the. Or like the outdoors.
Giannis Patelis
He plays Harlan. Yeah, he does.
Brody
Yes. He plays Harlan Pepper.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah, yeah.
Brody
He's.
Giannis Patelis
He's.
Phil
It's the same crew that did this is Spinal Tap and Waiting for Guffman.
Brody
And a Mighty Wind and Waiting for Guffman's. Absolutely fantastic, too. Yeah.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, I don't know. I've seen that one.
Brody
Oh, treat yourself.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, I will. That's great, kid. Appropriate. Probably.
Brody
You're gonna have the exact same experience.
Giannis Patelis
They're. They're all.
Phil
They're all like, writing the line between PG 13 and R. I don't think any of them are like that. That bad, though.
Brody
Yeah.
Giannis Patelis
All right, well, Hubert the Bloodhound, remember I sent you. All right, on to question eight.
Brody
I've never liked Weimer Reiners, and Best in show is like, just a good example.
Reva
Why don't you like them?
Brody
They're just not a good dog. Go ahead and write him.
Cal Roman
I had some good friends that had a couple of them, and they were just horrible dogs. Dumb, don't listen.
Brody
Aggressive in weird ways.
Giannis Patelis
Do you know the premise?
Reva
Besson show? I assume it's about a dog show.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah. Right. And. But they. They just do this amazing job of taking these dogs and then making these owners slash trainers be like, they are the dog kind of a thing. Like, whatever the dog is. So it's their owner. Handler.
Brody
Yeah.
Giannis Patelis
And it's. Yeah.
Cal Roman
The only reason people own those dogs because that dude who featured them in, like, photos, playing poker. Yeah. All kinds of stupid shit. It's like a thing for like a period of years. Like 20, 25 years.
Giannis Patelis
Ad break question number. Question number eight. You guys can decide what category?
Reva
Conservation.
Giannis Patelis
What six letter term is aviation slang for the biological remains left behind after a bird strikes an aircraft, especially a turbine engine? The question is, what six letter term is aviation slang for the biological remains left behind after a bird strikes an aircraft, especially a turbine engine. Got this one, Randall.
Spencer Newhart
No, I. I know that I have it in there somewhere and I'm never going to access it, so I just wrote something down.
Brody
Reva, you know the lady I'm talking about, she's like super famous now, which is like the way over the top.
Phil
Jennifer Coolidge.
Brody
Jennifer Coolidge, yes.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah.
Brody
She's in the Christopher Guest movie.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah.
Phil
Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara, who are now super famous among young people because of Schitt's Creek. They're. They're in all those movies too.
Brody
Yeah. And they're great.
Eric Hamburg
Great show. Great show.
Brody
Yeah.
Spencer Newhart
One for the kids. That's right, the younger generation.
Reva
Cal, you were confident. You know this.
Brody
Yes.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, God.
Brody
Making a late, late game run on Randy.
Giannis Patelis
Right?
Phil
I know it's getting tense now and.
Brody
Typically kind of falls apart under pressure like this. So it's going to be really.
Giannis Patelis
This is question eight. How do you guys feel up to this point? Point? Pretty good. Good. The level of questions, the difficulty. Too hard, Too easy.
Brody
I just. The real relaxing flow in here right now.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, go ahead, reveal your answers. It's time to hurry up. Roman says snarge. Cal, snarge. Eric without an answer. Randall says slop. Spencer carrying reva sky kill 1L. And Brody says jet sk. The correct answer is snarge. Listen to the Meat eater podcast, episode 417, where we interview Megan Deneen, USDA airport wildlife biologist, about snarge and all the other crazy stuff she deals with in her job.
Brody
I thought that was gonna be a gimme. I think. Thought that word made it around the office many, many times.
Cal Roman
It's been a while.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah. We didn't keep it in our. Would lexicon be the term?
Brody
Good job.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, that was question eight. So now we need a scoreboard update. Phil.
Phil
Yeah. Cal is making a late game breakout here. We've still got Eric and Riva with zero points. Roman has two. Brody and Randall tied up still with three points now. But Ryan Callahan has pulled ahead and is now tied with Spencer, who has not gotten a point in the last few questions. He still has four. And now Cal also has four.
Brody
I kind of feel like it should be happy, but it's kind of sad watching these two crumble mentally. They just don't have it, you know.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, on to question nine. A crescent shaped lake in an abandoned, abandoned loop of river channel is called what, this one?
Reva
I think we have.
Spencer Newhart
We have had this one.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, well, you're going to get it again.
Phil
I missed that one.
Giannis Patelis
Getting it again. A crescent shaped lake in an abandoned loop of river channel is called what?
Cal Roman
Not a game changer. Giannis.
Giannis Patelis
One, two, three. I don't know. Cal's thing. Did you write an answer? Oh, he's got an answer. Roman not riding Riva. Also not writing. For those of you that are going to have an answer, go ahead and flip your boards around. Cal Oxbow. Randall Oxbow. Spencer Oxbow. Lake. Brody Oxbow. They are correct.
Phil
Abandoned by what?
Cal Roman
The water gets cut off by.
Giannis Patelis
By the rest of the river sediment. Brody, during our guiding days on the Eagle river, actually got to watch one be created. And I swear to you, I was on the. The day that it started, and I floated through a chunk of cottonwoods that the river had never gone through. And it was the wildest thing ever. The people are still like, where should we cast? I'm like, you don't understand. This isn't where we're supposed to be right now. We're floating through the forest as opposed to down the main river channel. Yeah, it was pretty cool.
Reva
You think you were the first one through that part of the river?
Giannis Patelis
I mean, first 10.
Cal Roman
Yeah.
Giannis Patelis
Boats that ever went through there, for sure. Yeah, it's pretty cool. And. Yeah, well, that oxbow for a while held fish. And then, as happens with oxbows, they're cut off and no water coming in, no water going out, and they slowly fill in and they get hot and no more fishies.
Reva
Some of them will keep. I mean, if, like, it's a big enough river, become their own little fishery.
Giannis Patelis
But what I was reading is that eventually all of them will silt in and vegetation will grow in, because if it does not have water, fresh water coming in.
Brody
Yeah, there can be, like, you know, water coming up from underneath, too, in some of these systems. You know, it's like a reflection or it's the uppermost layer of the aquifer type of deal.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, one more scoreboard update. Phil.
Phil
Oh, yeah, sorry. I'm getting your. I'm getting your tiebreaker question prepped because I'm.
Brody
You're really.
Reva
4 ad breaks.
Phil
Yeah, apologies. Yeah, I mean, like Brody said, not exactly a game changer for the competition here. We still got Randall and Brody tied up with four now, and Cal and Spencer have five.
Giannis Patelis
All right, and if you're playing at home, you need to know the correct answers for number one. It was 24 inches. Question two, ASAT question three. Two. Question four. Data on previous engagements. Question five. Oklahoma, Iowa, Ohio, Missouri. Question six. Muskox. Question seven. Best in show. Question eight. Snarge. Question nine. Oxbow lake. Now, question number 10, which, as we always do here, is fishing. I got a little laugh there. Bagnell Dam was built across the Osage river to make this famous body of water. Bagnell Dam was built across the Osage river to make this famous body of water. Randall writing. Brody thinking. Spencer looking at the question again. Cal writing down an answer. Phil, still trying to figure out where that noise is coming from.
Phil
Yes, we're still getting cell phone stuff from somewhere, but, you know, it's might.
Giannis Patelis
Be Roman's coffee cup.
Cal Roman
Probably famous. By what measure? Why is it famous?
Reva
Don't say that.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah, I think I can tell you later in my.
Spencer Newhart
Call it well known.
Giannis Patelis
Well known. There you go. To make this well known body of water.
Spencer Newhart
Don't say that.
Giannis Patelis
Okay.
Spencer Newhart
Good to know.
Eric Hamburg
Famous lakes in my head.
Spencer Newhart
Just trying to avoid. Avoid some embarrassment.
Eric Hamburg
It's too late for that one. I'm gonna get bullied at work tomorrow. It's okay.
Phil
Well, now I really want to see it. Do the Steve thing. Just put a line through it.
Spencer Newhart
No, don't do it.
Eric Hamburg
It's gone.
Giannis Patelis
It's gone.
Spencer Newhart
Sorry, I don't mean to.
Giannis Patelis
All right, one last time. Bagnell Dam was built across the Osage river to make this well known body of water.
Spencer Newhart
You can say something else, but I.
Giannis Patelis
Know I liked it. Oh, for.
Spencer Newhart
Yeah, yeah.
Brody
I don't know.
Spencer Newhart
Say four pack.
Giannis Patelis
Don't say that one. But you can. All right, flip your boards. Roman. No answer. Cal, Lake of the Ozarks. Eric. Canyon. Ferry. Randall. Lake of the Ozarks. Spencer. Lake of the Ozarks. Reva. Lake of the Ozarks. Yeah, on the board. Wow. Sam Rayburn. Sam Rayburn. The correct answer is Lake of the Ozarks. Bagnell Dam was completed in 1931 and is 2500ft long. Lake of the Ozarks is known for its great fishing. March is the beginning of spoonbill season. These. These prehistoric filter feeders gather in deep holes, making them much easier to target. Since they don't eat traditional lures, you gotta snag them. The largest spoonbill to come out of the Lake of Ozarks was snagged by Chad Williams of Olathe, Kansas. It weighed 164 pounds, 13 ounces and is the current world record. That's a big old fish.
Brody
You know, spoonbill is a geographical.
Giannis Patelis
That's right.
Brody
Differentiator. It's like we have Spoon bill in Montana that are native to Montana. But if you said, yeah, I caught a spoonbill, people would Be like, I don't know what you're talking about. Paddlefish country up here.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah. Interestingly, on all the websites I was looking at around Lake of the Ozarks, they're. They make a point to call out both terms.
Brody
Oh, they do?
Giannis Patelis
Yep. So they. So that, you know, sometimes you'll hear.
Reva
It comboed with spoonbill catfish. Only folks say that. Oh, I used to do creel surveys that would come up like the great eating.
Brody
Spoonbill is a.
Reva
No, it's not a catfish, but they would, they would say it as though you were talking about like a smallmouth bass. Right.
Brody
Interesting.
Reva
Spoon bill catfish.
Cal Roman
It's like regional vernacular.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah.
Brody
I was also reading like the. The fancy sonar has assisted the spoonbill guiding industry tremendously.
Cal Roman
Oh, dude, that in Montana. Oh, they did for paddlefish.
Brody
Yeah.
Cal Roman
Yep.
Giannis Patelis
Phil, where are we sitting at after that final question that some of us got right and some didn't?
Phil
Well, Giannis, that's going to bring us to a tie breaking round because we got Ryan Callahan and Spencer Newharth tied up with six points a piece.
Cal Roman
I'm just gonna sit back.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, well, I'm glad I could pitch a game where neither Randall nor Brody won. Okay, onto the tiebreakers. Tiebreaker.
Brody
You ain't first, you're last.
I
I think just cut it at. If you ain't first, you're last and then like go into other stuff.
Reva
That's funny.
I
I never liked it. Hey, Phil off, man.
Giannis Patelis
Thanks for playing the drop, Phil.
Phil
My pleasure.
Giannis Patelis
Tiebreaker. How big in inches is the current archery whitetail buck record in Wisconsin? Well, and I don't know Wisconsin. And I would like you to answer within. Within fraction 2 and 8th. How big in inches is the current archery whitetail buck record in Wisconsin?
Reva
And this is answer to grocer net.
Cal Roman
This typical or non typical?
Giannis Patelis
Oh, it was supposed to say typical. Oh, sorry. Okay, sorry. But did you want any visual.
Phil
The visual accompaniment? Yeah.
Reva
Oh, you get to see this. Wow. All right. You know that guy, God, he would.
Brody
Have been a hell of a buck next year.
Cal Roman
He's only four and a half.
Spencer Newhart
Mismatched camo. I like to see it.
Brody
Oh, let's see.
Cal Roman
I like it when they got that blonde forehead, though. Cool looking when they look like that.
Spencer Newhart
Now the question is that guy have small hands or big hands?
Giannis Patelis
Yeah.
Brody
Well, there's a couple of deductions in there too.
Cal Roman
What's the. What do it. What do we got to go to?
Giannis Patelis
To the end to an eighth.
Brody
Got the main beams on that sucker.
Spencer Newhart
Crazy.
Giannis Patelis
Sometimes I start to think these giants I'm like, yeah, it doesn't look that big. But then when I compare it all to the buck's ear, then all of a sudden I go, oh yeah, that's right. That ear is probably. And some hints, 6 inches long. And now all of a sudden everything. You start to gain some context.
Reva
You can see this buck on the YouTube channel that Yanni is having a score.
Giannis Patelis
Mm.
Reva
What year was this killed?
Giannis Patelis
It was killed.
Reva
That looks like. That looks like a 2001 picture. 14, 2014. Whoa. Like this guy vintage.
Giannis Patelis
He was doing vintage before. Vintage was cool. All right, so the two that are actually playing here are Cal and Spencer. Correct. So hold on. I for always.
Cal Roman
But everyone's got a right.
Reva
Everyone should play along. Someone gets it right of their nose, we'll add an extra hundred dollars to the donation.
Giannis Patelis
Okay, so everybody reveal. Besides Cal and Spencer, Roman going 208 and 08. Eric going 2333 8. Randall 228 48. Reva 210 08. Brody. 207 and 3 8. Now between Cal and Spencer. Cal says 219 and an eighth. Spencer 193 and an eighth. We have a winner. Of course we would. But the winner is within 2 inches.
Spencer Newhart
Oh my goodness.
Giannis Patelis
And the number is 1916 8. Making.
Spencer Newhart
Wow.
Giannis Patelis
Spencer Newhart, today's winner.
Spencer Newhart
Oh. Who else was sub 200?
Giannis Patelis
He took this buck. His name is Adam Huff. H u p F. The other half is H u h u F F. Yeah. I don't know how to pronounce this guy's last name exactly. Do it again. Hopf H u p F. So I.
Brody
Just assumed like everything had to be over 200 inches. It doesn't look like a 200 plus inch buck, but I'm like, it just has to be.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah, well, typical.
Brody
Yeah, but what like Doug's big giant bucket at his place in Wisconsin is.
Cal Roman
We just call that a 14 pointer.
Giannis Patelis
And be good with it. I think I want to say it's over 200 inches. Isn't it the standard? That's what I thought, but I don't know. It's like not. It's. For some reason it's not typical, probably. Well, Spencer, as today's winner, you get to choose where the $500 donation will go.
Reva
I'm going to donate to the North American Sturgeon and Paddlefish Society. I donated them the last few times. Really like that organization. They deserve more attention. Most people listening to this will probably never catch a sturgeon or a paddlefish. And that's okay. They're just an amazing fish. Hopefully, like you, it just makes you happy knowing that they exist out there. And then we have some dinosaurs swimming around our rivers. And this is the one conservation organization dedicated to them. My favorite animals in the world, 500 going their way and they're right here in Bozeman.
Spencer Newhart
Spoon Bills.
Reva
That's right.
Brody
I'm really glad you could get this win, Spencer.
Reva
Thank you.
Giannis Patelis
Thank you, Spencer. Well, thank you all for playing. Good job, Spencer, for winning. Phil, thanks again for your great work as always. Thanks for everybody listening at home and watching at home also. And join us next week for more meat eater trivia, the only game show where constant conservation always wins.
Reva
And Randall's hosting.
Spencer Newhart
Thanks, Giannis.
Reva
Thank you, Yanni.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah, Spencer from South Dakota, he's the host. Using those smooth mellow tones, he lays them questions down. And he likes taking those two and three year old bucks. And he's an avid amateur rock hound.
I
I'm telling you, man, there's nothing quite like it gives me chubby just thinking about it. You hit the call and way off in the distance, a tom fires back. You work him in, watching his body language shift from cautious to committed. Then that moment, the one every turkey hunter dreams about all winter. That gobbler locks eyes in your decoy and comes running in. It that is why die hard turkey hunters insist on Dave Smith decoys. Check out the full lineup@davesmithdecoys.com and take your turkey hunts to the next level.
