Meat Eater podcast.
Randall Williams
Welcome to Meat Eater radio live. It's 11:00am Mountain Time. That's 7:00am for our new friends in Tahiti on Thursday, October 30th. And we are live from Meat Eater HQ in Bozeman, Montana. I'm your host, Randall Williams, joined today by my very close friends and colleagues Seth Morris and Corey Calkins.
Seth Morris
Happy to be here.
Corey Calkins
Great to see you again, Randall.
Randall Williams
On today's show, we'll interview Jordan Sillers, host of the Blood Trails podcast, which officially drops today. That's correct.
Corey Calkins
Spooky.
Randall Williams
We'll play a little game called Fake News. We'll interview Lauren Dolcater, who submitted one of the most unusual customer service requests in the History of first light. And finally, we'll look back at the good old days in another installment of Throwback Thursday. Then here I write, did we have any plugs? And then below that, Corey has added season 13 of meat eater Keeps Rolling on with the second episode, which dropped a few days ago. Steve's Montana muzzleloader mule deer hunt. Next Monday is Steve and Evan Felker's Alaska black bear hunt. And we also just dropped a thrilling Ryan Callahan deer and elk combo hunt that is sure to please viewers.
Corey Calkins
Well said.
Randall Williams
That was a nice touch.
Seth Morris
Yeah. There you go, boys.
Randall Williams
How are we doing today?
Corey Calkins
Oh, we're good.
Randall Williams
It's a good, good week in Montana.
Seth Morris
It's hunting season. Oh, yeah.
Randall Williams
Oh, my goodness.
Corey Calkins
Fall is in the air. Deep falls in the air, but choking on it.
Randall Williams
Some of us have already closed the book.
Seth Morris
Some of us had a short elk.
Randall Williams
Season on the chapter of our hunting season. So, Corey, how was your weekend?
Corey Calkins
Oh, it was fantastic. Got into a bunch of elk quit more elk than people, which. Tell me more.
Randall Williams
Tell me more.
Seth Morris
That's good.
Corey Calkins
On opener like that he had.
Seth Morris
That's a win right there.
Corey Calkins
Yeah, Agreed.
Seth Morris
Good.
Corey Calkins
Cause, man, I've had some openers where I see a pile of people and zero elk or, you know, more people than elk.
Jordan Sillers
But.
Corey Calkins
So, yeah, had a good plan rolling into opening morning and didn't get it done. Watched a few elk fall from other groups of hunters. But Saturday was tough for us. The weather was just windy as get out. Geez, we joked multiple times we should have just brought a flag or, excuse me, a kite with us. A flag, too, to wave up on.
Jordan Sillers
The side of the mountain.
Randall Williams
You could have also stuffed your backpack full of elk meat so that it catches a lot of wind and spins you around as you walk down the mountain. I like. I could have used. That was my innovation.
Corey Calkins
A little added weight would have kept.
Randall Williams
Actually makes you very unstable.
Corey Calkins
But Sunday, I helped a buddy get a nice bowl, which was fantastic. Not too bad of a pack out. Beautiful day on Sunday and gorgeous. Yeah, I'm still hunting myself, though.
Jordan Sillers
I'm.
Corey Calkins
I'm a little picky still. We got a long season and something about having a tag, deer and elk tags in your pocket in late November.
Seth Morris
Oh, it's a beautiful thing.
Randall Williams
I'll trade you my deer tag for your elk tag.
Jordan Sillers
Not even.
Corey Calkins
Not a chance.
Seth Morris
I don't know if that's how it works.
Corey Calkins
No, sure. I don't even think about deer till my elk's down.
Randall Williams
Seth, I'd trade you my deer tag for your elk Tag. But that thing ain't good no more.
Seth Morris
That's right, brother. Yeah.
Phil (Engineer)
You guys are insufferable.
Randall Williams
We're getting so good at this.
Seth Morris
Yeah. Opener was a good one for me.
Randall Williams
And you tell me more, and then I'll tell you more.
Seth Morris
I saw more people than elk by far.
Jordan Sillers
Darn it.
Seth Morris
Which, you know, that's how it goes around here. But, you know, one thing I like about the opener is all the people just get the elk moving around.
Randall Williams
Stuff. Stuff's happening.
Seth Morris
Yeah.
Corey Calkins
Heavy butt.
Seth Morris
I just feel like I'm always in it.
Randall Williams
It's never a quiet day.
Seth Morris
Yeah. No matter how many people around. You just feel like anything could happen at any moment. And that's what I experienced. Saw a lot of dudes in openings. Open areas. Every open area that I glassed. Every ridge had orange on it. So I was like, you know what? I bet the boys aren't in the timber sneaking around, you know?
Randall Williams
You bet they. Oh, the boys being the people.
Seth Morris
The people. Yeah.
Randall Williams
Yeah. By the boys. You met the elk and.
Seth Morris
No.
Randall Williams
You were thinking the opposite. That the boys would be in the timber.
Giannis Patelis
Yes.
Randall Williams
Sneaking around. If they were the elk were the boys.
Giannis Patelis
Exactly.
Phil (Engineer)
Yeah.
Seth Morris
That's not confusing at all.
Randall Williams
Not at all.
Jordan Sillers
All.
Seth Morris
So, yeah, I. I started doing some timber sneaking and. And just bumped into some bulls and.
Randall Williams
And I'd, like, got one of them. I'd like to put it on the record that when Seth talks about elk hunting and he visualizes how he'd like his elk season to turn out, he often describes sneaking through the timber and shooting a bull at close range. So when you texted me that.
Seth Morris
I like that stuff.
Randall Williams
Oh, I was delighted for you.
Seth Morris
Yes, it was. It was exactly how I wanted it to go down.
Randall Williams
Really. So happy for you.
Seth Morris
And, you know, I lucked out and had a very short pack out.
Randall Williams
That's great.
Seth Morris
Which never happens.
Randall Williams
That's great. And now you have elk in the freezer for your growing family.
Seth Morris
That's right.
Randall Williams
Beautiful. What's your son's. Fuck. Did I blow it?
Seth Morris
No. It's announced. We got one on the way. Yeah.
Phil (Engineer)
Yeah. The blood rushes from Randall's face.
Seth Morris
This is live. Randall, you're here.
Randall Williams
He's gonna.
Seth Morris
Yeah, yeah.
Randall Williams
Let's go back and cut that. And if we could trim that for the YouTube audience, that would be fantastic.
Giannis Patelis
And done.
Randall Williams
Yeah. I mean, you're gonna feed that animal to that baby. To their own blood.
Seth Morris
Yeah. Which is cool to think about.
Corey Calkins
Beautiful. Yeah. Get ready to throw that meat in a blender.
Seth Morris
Yeah.
Randall Williams
Strong, handsome, young Morris.
Phil (Engineer)
That's Right.
Corey Calkins
Little meat smoothies for the youngins.
Seth Morris
That's right. Let's hear your story.
Randall Williams
What about you, Randall?
Phil (Engineer)
Well, actually, Spencer Newhart's in the chat, which we all love. He says, now Seth has to get back at Randall by telling a secret about him.
Corey Calkins
Ooh, secret. Secrets are no fun unless you tell secrets.
Randall Williams
Do I have.
Seth Morris
All the secrets I know about Randall would put him in jail.
Randall Williams
So, yeah, let's avoid those. Yeah. Thanks for asking about my elk hunt. Yeah, it's great. Opening morning, I was with a close buddy. We packed in day before opener, set up a nice little camp, spent a good long time. Actually, I haven't told you this part of my story. It's been a good long time pumping water and filling up our water bladders. And my buddy bent down to re rig the filter and his can of bear spray hooked on something.
Seth Morris
Oh, you did tell me about this. This is great.
Randall Williams
I'm standing like five feet away and he's bent over and I just hear this. Sorry to the listeners. And I thought it was a bear. I mean, they should really look into making bear spray deployments not sound like bears. Because at first I thought it was just a bear huffing. And then I realized he had just fired off, you know, a one second burst of bear spray. And I immediately thought we were gonna have to evac, as they say. Thankfully, it just went straight into his backpack. And once we realized we didn't have any on our hands or faces, we scrubbed his backpack with snow. And to be honest, a bear could probably smell it, but we couldn't.
Jordan Sillers
Interesting.
Randall Williams
So that's great. Yeah. Then spotted some elk. Then Saturday mornings, the opener, didn't see any folks. Saw a lot of elk, and they moved onto public land, which is where we had permission to hunt and got to a couple of bulls, a couple smaller bulls sneaked across the property line there, and I had an opportunity for a shot with my rifle, and I placed the bullet accurately and tremendous damage. The elk went down quickly. And then we packed it out and we were back sleeping in. Well, we were sleeping in separate beds, but we were sleeping in bed at my house that night.
Jordan Sillers
Lovely.
Randall Williams
Each each with. I had two dogs. He had one.
Seth Morris
What time of morning did you shoot that bull?
Randall Williams
Late morning. Like around 10:30.
Seth Morris
Mine was 9:30.
Randall Williams
And it's odd because we killed the exact same bull.
Seth Morris
Yes.
Randall Williams
So at some point we're gonna have to bring our bulls together and try to decide if a man could tell the difference between the two, because they're remarkably similar.
Seth Morris
They are remarkably Remarkably similar.
Jordan Sillers
Yeah.
Corey Calkins
The bull we killed was at high noon day after.
Randall Williams
Really?
Corey Calkins
Yeah. Never give up throughout the day.
Randall Williams
Yeah.
Corey Calkins
High noon.
Randall Williams
Yeah. I mean, wandering around, it is funny. I've killed some things by just thinking to myself, well, I'm not gonna kill anything if I go home now and then it happens.
Seth Morris
What was that bull? Was that a five by five?
Corey Calkins
It was, yep.
Seth Morris
Ten. Just, just a, just three. Ten pointers, you know.
Corey Calkins
Not sure what that means. Yeah, five by five.
Randall Williams
That's 30 points altogether.
Jordan Sillers
Yeah.
Phil (Engineer)
Great work.
Corey Calkins
Congrats, fellas.
Randall Williams
Joining us on the line first is friend of the program, meat eater managing editor Jordan Sillers. His new podcast, Blood Trails is officially out as of today, Thursday, October 30th. So go subscribe and check it out. Jordan, welcome to the show.
Jordan Sillers
Hey, good to be here.
Randall Williams
You just, you just had a successful hunt of your own, if I recall correctly from the gram.
Jordan Sillers
I did, yes. Yeah, I got to go out to Colorado and get mule deer.
Randall Williams
Very.
Jordan Sillers
That was nice. Tons of fun.
Randall Williams
Is that a first mule deer as a Texan?
Jordan Sillers
It is, yes. First mule deer as a Texan. So, you know, not nothing huge, but three by three I was very happy with. Very cool. And yeah, it's a good end to about five or six days of hunting.
Corey Calkins
Nice.
Randall Williams
Very cool.
Seth Morris
Cool.
Phil (Engineer)
Way to go.
Seth Morris
Congrats, Jordan.
Corey Calkins
Thank you.
Randall Williams
The first episode of Blood Trails comes out today and it involves the disappearance of a hunter named Bob Christian. Can you tell us a little bit about the facts of the case?
Jordan Sillers
Yes. So Bob Christian was an 18 year old kid. He's a college freshman, he lived in Madison, Wisconsin and he had a plan to go hunting on the opening day of archery season. And this was all the way back in 1977. So he was, you know, one of, one of the, the earlier people to, to really get into archery. Archery, hunting, whitetail. And so he, the, the plan was there. He was going to drive up to his buddy's house in Baraboo, which is about a 45 minute drive from where he lived. They were gonna, he was gonna spend the night at his friend's house on Friday. They were gonna get up early on Saturday and go hunting. But Bob was supposed to be at his friend's house around 6pm for dinner, but he never showed up. And this was obviously before cell phone, so they couldn't just call him. And so they waited and waited and waited. He didn't show up. All, you know, all that Friday night they went out looking for him and they found the car he was driving in a kind of A remote area that was actually an area that he had experience hunting in, but that's not the area that they had planned to hunt. And the weird thing about this is the car was found, but all of its wheels and tires had been removed. I think the battery had been removed, a few other things. And so they found the car, they looked inside. Bob wasn't in there. All of his archery stuff was gone. All of his hunting gear was gone. I think there was a letterman jacket that he owned, was, was still in there, but there was no sign of him. So they searched the area for several days, still couldn't find him. And to this day, no one knows what happened to him. And there were a few kind of weird things they found out throughout the investigation. A few people saw the car that Friday night driving around. It's unclear if Bob was the one driving it. And to this day, no one quite knows what happened. So that's, that's the first episode of Blood Trails. It's out now. It's on Spotify, you know, anywhere you get your podcasts. So you can go, go check that out.
Randall Williams
So how did you first learn about Bob's story? It's a, it's a 50 year old cold case, and I don't think anyone here who's on our radar. How did you find out about this?
Jordan Sillers
Yeah, so I found out about this because the detective who's currently in charge of the case for the Sauk County Sheriff's Office, he reached out to me. We put out that first kind of pilot episode of Blood Trails back in March, and he heard about it and he reached out and said, you know, I'm working on this cold case. It's about a hunter. I think it's something that you guys could cover on Blood Trails. And he's really been pushing to get, you know, more people to get the word out about the case because at this point, there isn't a whole lot of physical evidence that's available. And so it really will come down to someone coming forward who knows something. And so he's trying to, trying to get the word out.
Corey Calkins
Hmm.
Randall Williams
So I assume you, you have included that investigator in your, in your reporting. Who else did you speak to while researching this case?
Jordan Sillers
Yeah, so I talked to the detective, Tyler Pointon, and then he connected me with Bob's sister and then also with that friend that he was supposed to meet. And so for this episode, you know, I, I talked with really, the, the people who have the most knowledge about this case who are still alive. Bob's parents have passed away. But I was able to talk with his sister and then. And then his friend. So. And they were very kind. You know, it's one of those things that is difficult for them to talk about, but they want to know what happened to their brother and to their friend, and so they were willing to talk with me.
Randall Williams
What, what drew you to the story? I mean, obviously, there's a lot of cases like this. Is there, is there anything in particular that grabbed your attention when you heard it?
Jordan Sillers
I mean, there's. With this particular story, there are some very strange details that are really kind of inexplicable. One of the people who saw Bob's car saw was it. It had pulled up the driveway of a cabin where a nun lived, and she talked with the person driving the car, and he said, I'm looking for my friend Bob. But the description she gave of, of this person driving Bob's car looked a lot like Bob. And so that's difficult to explain. There's also a potential connection to the Chicago serial killer John Wayne Gacy. And so that's, you know, and, and that's currently being investigated. We're actually waiting right now for some DNA results to come back to see if there's a connection there. So there's lots of interesting details. I, I also, I think with this, this podcast, you know, a true crime podcast about hunters and anglers, I think our audience has a, a really unique opportunity to push some of these cases forward because there'll be people in our audience who are from that area who, who know the, the place that, that Bob's car was found, and so they might have some information. And I also think our audience is going to, is going to care about these stories more so than, you know, your kind of standard true crime general audience. I think, you know, we, we want to figure out what happened to these people who love to do this, the same things that we love to do.
Randall Williams
Now, you mentioned, you mentioned that there's these bizarre details. What's the most surprising thing you turned up in this, in this case, during your reporting?
Jordan Sillers
Yeah, I mean, I, I think it's that John Wayne Gacy connection, which Gacy was arrested, I believe, in 1978. So that was just one year after Bob disappeared. And the fact that, that we just now are kind of learning about this. The, the detective who's in charge got a tip from someone who said that Gacy did some work at their, at their. I believe it was an inn or a hotel. He. Gasey, did some work there, which is around the same area that Bob disappeared around the same time. And so they're, they're looking at some of the DNA from the, some Gacy victims that haven't been identified. And so just the fact that it's been almost 50 years and we're still learning more, there's still leads to follow. And some of those leads are very surprising and I mean, obviously very disturbing. I think that was definitely the most surprising thing from this episode. Hmm.
Randall Williams
This, this is obviously just the first of your series. Can you give listeners a sense of what else they can expect in the weeks ahead and how frequently these will be coming out?
Jordan Sillers
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. So this first season is going to have eight episodes. The first one comes out today and then they'll come out every Thursday until those, those eight episodes are over. And so the next two episodes is going to be a two part series about a. There was in 1996, a 15 year old girl was murdered. They couldn't figure out who did it. Last year they found her killer. It turned out to be a BLM biologist who still lived in the area. He was also a big time hunter, very involved in the hunting community. And so those two episodes cover that investigation, how he was found out. And then we really dive into this question of how could someone do this? Right. And then go on to kind of live a normal life. So that's the next two episodes. The one after that is about a hunter who was murdered with his own rifle. They don't know who did it. The one after that is a similar kind of disappearance case, similar to, to the Bob Christian case, but there's a lot more information. Detectives think they know who did it, but they've, you know, been been unable to basically gather enough evidence. There's a story of a hunter who was stabbed 17 times. He was found out in the woods and they ruled it a suicide. So we get into that and some of the reasons, the evidence for that. So lots of interesting stuff. This, this is not a podcast where every story is a cold case and you don't have a resolution. Some of these stories have been solved but I would say there's still a lot of questions, a lot of unanswered questions with which, with each of these cases. So really excited to share these stories and like I said, hopefully we can move some of these cases forward. Hopefully some of our audience will, will know something and be able to, to help out.
Randall Williams
Yeah, Jordan, we do have one more question for you from the chat. Spencer wants to know the story behind the baseball on the shelf behind You.
Jordan Sillers
Oh, that's just Little league. I got the game ball. One game.
Seth Morris
That's awesome.
Phil (Engineer)
Congrats, man.
Seth Morris
That's wholesome.
Jordan Sillers
Yeah, thank you.
Randall Williams
Ditched that at some point.
Jordan Sillers
Yeah. No, man. No, it's. It was a shining moment of my baseball career. Honestly.
Seth Morris
Beautiful.
Jordan Sillers
Beautiful.
Randall Williams
Well, Jordan, good to see you. Congrats on this. I know it's been a tremendous amount of work and folks are excited. So again, to the audience, check out blood trails. Go find it. Subscribe and you can look forward to eight episodes in the coming weeks.

Seth Morris
Good work, Jordan.
Corey Calkins
Yeah. Got goosebumps. Watch your six while you're out in the woods.

Let's play Fake News a Pete taping Rush up.
Peter MD Advertiser
He's a balloon.
Phil (Engineer)
So is that. So this opportunity comes once every few weeks.
Jordan Sillers
You can do anything you set your minds to, guys.
Phil (Engineer)
Except like teleport or fly or some stuff like that.
Randall Williams
You know that's. Was that a new touch at the end?
Phil (Engineer)
No, it's just everyone always talks over it so it's been hidden. There's a few of those in some of my drops where there's like a little sneak peek. Sneak at the end. I've never mentioned it, but thanks for calling that out.
Jordan Sillers
Good work, Phil.
Corey Calkins
A little slim shady mix in there.
Randall Williams
Fake News is where I read a series of headlines in which a real one is hiding among three imposters your job is to figure out which one is true.
Seth Morris
Can't wait.
Corey Calkins
Bring it on.
Phil (Engineer)
Are you ready for this vent or Randall?
Randall Williams
Yes. And, Phil, would you keep score, please?
Phil (Engineer)
Probably not. It's a joke.
Randall Williams
I think it's so simple. I'll keep score.
Phil (Engineer)
Thanks.
Randall Williams
Our first headline comes from the venerable journalistic outlet people.com.
Phil (Engineer)
Sorry, Randall, hold on a sec here.
Randall Williams
No, it's fine.
Phil (Engineer)
You just think it's a small talk. No, it's not your fault at all.
Randall Williams
No, no, I didn't really think about how complicated it was on your end of things, and I should have just killed time for longer.
Phil (Engineer)
Randall. I forget.
Randall Williams
I see you have it up now.
Phil (Engineer)
It's up now.
Randall Williams
Maybe we're ready to go. I'll do that again.
Seth Morris
Great.
Randall Williams
Our first headline comes from the venerable journalistic outlet people.com. formerly people magazine. Oh, aggressive blank destroyed after escaping from overturned truck, but one is still on the loose.
Seth Morris
Oh, I just read this.
Phil (Engineer)
No.
Randall Williams
Oh, that kind of. Don't show him. Don't show them your answer. Hold on. I'll read that headline again. For those of you playing at home, aggressive blank destroyed after escaping from overturned truck, but one is still on the loose. Your options are A, lions, B, elephants, C, monkeys, or D, wild horses.
Corey Calkins
All could be aggressive.
Randall Williams
Mm. Yeah, that was a trick. That was tricky for me when I was coming up with the fake answers, as I had to choose aggressive animals that could be turned. It could be in an overturned truck.
Corey Calkins
You don't think the word destroyed harmed the animal, do you?
Randall Williams
I do, actually. I do.
Jordan Sillers
I did not hear about this.
Randall Williams
That's a clinical term. A, lions, B, elephants, C, monkeys, or D, wild horses.
Corey Calkins
Interesting.
Randall Williams
Yes. What could it be? Seth's got an answer. Because Seth keeps up with his social media headlines.
Corey Calkins
People magazine.
Randall Williams
I thought People. I thought this might be too obvious because it's been all over.
Corey Calkins
Has it?
Seth Morris
Yeah.
Phil (Engineer)
Interesting.
Corey Calkins
I must have.
Randall Williams
That shouldn't shape your thinking, Corey. You should just follow your gut. Is it A, lions, B, elephants, C, monkeys, or D, wild horses?
Corey Calkins
Well, golly, you can't hide an elephant.
Randall Williams
This.
Corey Calkins
Here we go.
Randall Williams
No, this is South Carolina. No.
Giannis Patelis
Okay.
Corey Calkins
Definitely haven't heard about it. Let's go.
Randall Williams
All right, flip over your boards, gentlemen. We both say see monkeys?
Corey Calkins
Darn it.
Randall Williams
You both got it correct.
Seth Morris
I saw a gripping grin.
Randall Williams
I'm gonna.
Seth Morris
Yeah. So, like, some hunters got after him, I guess. Or.
Jordan Sillers
Oh.
Seth Morris
Unless that was fake news. But I saw on. On the webs that, I don't know, some hunter was sitting in a deer stand and one came by I don't know.
Randall Williams
I don't know who got the monkeys, But I can tell you that a truck carrying 21 rhesus monkeys from Tulane University to a testing facility in Florida overturned just on Tuesday, setting the primates loose. The Jasper county sheriff's department posted on Facebook that, quote, the monkeys are approximately 40 pounds, aggressive to humans and carry hepatitis C, herpes, and Covid. Oh, we don't need more of that. However, in a separate statement, Tulane University said the monkeys had not been exposed to any of these.
Seth Morris
Sure.
Randall Williams
People contacted the Jasper county sheriff's Department, who had no additional comment about the discrepancy in information and referred to the to follow their social media pages for updates on the case. So if a deer hunter got one of those monkeys, I'm not sure. I assumed it was the sheriff's department, but boy.
Corey Calkins
Stay tuned for on the missing monkey.
Randall Williams
Real exciting start to our game. We're tied at one to one recess.
Phil (Engineer)
Monkey.
Randall Williams
Our second headline comes to us from the old gray lady. The New York Times. Beware of swiper. A blank at Grand Teton park with a penchant for footwear.
Jordan Sillers
Yep.
Randall Williams
Is it A, a black bear, B, a marmot, C, a fox, or D, a seasonal employee.
Corey Calkins
Ooh, God.
Seth Morris
Oh.
Randall Williams
Again, the headline reads, beware of swiper a blank at Grand Teton park with a penchant for footwear. And your options once again are a black bear, a marmot.
Seth Morris
Do you know this one?
Randall Williams
A fox. A pretty good guess. Or a seasonal employee.
Corey Calkins
All options would potentially snag a footwear piece and take it away back to their hole. Seasonal employee would be living in a hole somewhere for sure.
Randall Williams
It would be weird, though, if a seasonal employee employee got a nickname from a newspaper. Well, I don't know. I guess they could. You know, it's like the Boston Strangler. Seth's got an answer. Seth, are you confident? Corey's got an answer.
Corey Calkins
Feel pretty good.
Seth Morris
I narrowed it down to two, I think.
Randall Williams
All right. Based on just your gut?
Seth Morris
Yep.
Randall Williams
Perfect. That's how we like to play around here. Flip those boards over, boys. Let me see them. Seth says c. Oh, a fox. Corey says be a marmot. We have a correct answer in the room. It's a fox.
Seth Morris
Whoa.
Corey Calkins
I've been gut shot.
Randall Williams
Oh, look at that. Look at that photo there.
Seth Morris
There he is.
Randall Williams
The national park service announced on a poster wanted for grand theft footwear with an illustration of a fox gripping a sneaker in its teeth. Crimes stealing left shoes. Parentheses they taste better Flip flops and campers pride this whimsical wanted poster, which branded the Fox, the Sneaker Snatcher, the Midnight Mismatcher, and Swiper. The Fox was part of the park's initial effort to warn campers that parkour shoes had been vanishing. But last week, unfortunately, the tally of purloined footwear rose to 32, because visitors were intentionally leaving out their footwear as offerings to the Fox, just in case he comes by.
Seth Morris
I wonder what he's doing with them.
Randall Williams
Yeah, I don't know. I don't know.
Corey Calkins
Got a den of shoes.
Randall Williams
Yeah, that'd be interesting to see. I hope we get some more information on Swiper and Fox for a future episode of Fake News. Cause I don't know anything. So now it seems we have a 1 to 2 deficit here. Seth is in the lead. Corey is losing by one point.
Corey Calkins
That is correct.
Randall Williams
And there is one headline left to go. Phil, let's give it to him. A fisherman went digging for worms. Instead, he found 13 pounds of blank. Is it Civil War cannonballs, marijuana, ancient treasure, or dinosaur teeth?
Corey Calkins
Interesting.
Randall Williams
Where was he? That's gonna give him away. Is it, though? A fisherman went digging for worms. He found 13 pounds of blank. Is it Civil War cannonballs, marijuana, ancient treasure, or dinosaur teeth?
Corey Calkins
I wasn't around back in the Civil War, but I feel like a cannonball would have weighed about 13 pounds.
Randall Williams
You know, I had. I had problems when I was coming up with my fake answers. I had problems thinking of things that would be in the ground that you'd measure in poundage.
Corey Calkins
Okay, so it's not a no.
Jordan Sillers
No.
Randall Williams
It could be.
Corey Calkins
Well, of course, of course.
Randall Williams
Because if they were different sized cannonballs, mini cannonballs, you wouldn't say a small one and a medium one.
Corey Calkins
Sure. Chunks of balls.
Seth Morris
£15.
Giannis Patelis
The.
Phil (Engineer)
The chat is reprimanding all of you for not having any reference to Dora the Explorer when it comes to Swiper the fox who steals things.
Corey Calkins
Oh, darn Swiper.
Phil (Engineer)
No swiping.
Seth Morris
Guilty. I've heard that before.
Randall Williams
Guilty is charged.
Phil (Engineer)
I think he wears a little Zorro mask.
Randall Williams
Not a. Not a. Not a Dora guy.
Phil (Engineer)
It's a little. Little past your time, but it.
Randall Williams
It helps.
Seth Morris
I didn't pick that one.
Corey Calkins
Okay, good.
Randall Williams
Seth's got an answer. Corey's got an answer. They've got.
Seth Morris
Do you have a tiebreaker?
Randall Williams
They've got different answers. No, I'm thinking of one as I do this. You ready, Corey? Yep. Ready. Show me what you got, big boys.
Seth Morris
Cannonball.
Randall Williams
Corey says B. Weed. Seth says A. Cannonballs. The correct answer Is c. Ancient treasure. A Swedish fisherman searching for gooey juicy worms to use as bait near his summer home near Stockholm instead struck something far more solid. A copper cauldron brimming with coins and jewelry. In total, the find comprised 13 pounds of early middle ages silver. Are we good, Phil?
Phil (Engineer)
Yeah, don't worry about the tv.
Randall Williams
This, this is. Quote, this is probably one of the largest silver treasures from the early Middle ages that has been found in Sweden, says Sophia Anderson, the antiquarian at the Stockholm County Administrative Board. She says this in a translated statement. So I don't know the original Swedish. I assume that they translated her accurately. Quote, we do not yet know how. Excuse me.
Corey Calkins
God.
Seth Morris
Just take a breath, Randall.
Randall Williams
We do not yet know exactly how many coins there are, but I believe it could be upward of 20.
Seth Morris
Wow.
Randall Williams
A veritable fortune in middle aged treasure.
Seth Morris
20,000 coins or $20,000 worth of coins?
Randall Williams
20,000 coins. I don't know if we have the exchange rate pinned down.
Seth Morris
That'd be interesting to know.
Randall Williams
But with that final question, Seth is the winner of Fake News by a score of 2 to 1. Thanks for playing. I enjoyed this.
Corey Calkins
Good game.
Seth Morris
That was great.
Randall Williams
Back to our regularly scheduled programming. And that brings us to listener feedback. What does the chat have to say? Sorry if I'm rushing you.
Phil (Engineer)
No, it's. No, it's fine. It's moving. It's very efficient and I appreciate that.
Randall Williams
Yeah, yeah, that's. I mean that's the vibe we're going for.
Phil (Engineer)
Just when this show is run professionally, it kind of catches me off guard.
Randall Williams
You know, that's the vibe I'm going for here.
Phil (Engineer)
Mogor asks, when will daylight saving time end in Montana this year? Ours just ended this past Sunday. I didn't know that. It's on different schedules around the world, but Mogor, I believe ours is next week. Next Tuesday.
Corey Calkins
Saturday night.
Randall Williams
I think it ends. Yeah. It usually is a weekend.
Phil (Engineer)
Oh yeah. It's like a Sunday. A Saturday night into Sunday.
Corey Calkins
Yeah.
Seth Morris
Okay.
Randall Williams
It's coming up soon. I think this shift, our shift, our hunting hours around a little bit here.
Corey Calkins
Sunset will be around 5:30.
Randall Williams
Now sunset a week from Thursday. Sunset is at 4:30.
Seth Morris
Really?
Randall Williams
A week from today. Yeah. This time next week, sunset will be at 4:30.
Jordan Sillers
Yep.
Seth Morris
And it's like barely light here.
Randall Williams
Yeah. Yeah. So we're gonna have some earlier mornings but also earlier evenings back at the tent.
Corey Calkins
True.
Randall Williams
Which I enjoy.
Corey Calkins
Long nights.
Randall Williams
Interesting question, Mogur. Thank you.
Phil (Engineer)
Yeah, we had a legitimate question about rifle calibers and the chap at Spencer Newharth has just been fielding those.
Seth Morris
Is that the bullet question?
Phil (Engineer)
Yeah.
Seth Morris
Yeah, I like that one.
Phil (Engineer)
Well, there. There is another bull asking if you guys are shooting copper.
Seth Morris
Oh, yeah, that's the one I saw.
Phil (Engineer)
Okay. No, yeah, there was one about whitetail calibers.
Seth Morris
Got you.
Randall Williams
Yeah, I believe old Sethi is.
Seth Morris
I'm shooting all copper Hornady CX bullet out of my 7 PRC. That's what I shot that bull with.
Randall Williams
Beautiful.
Corey Calkins
I am not same lead.
Phil (Engineer)
Seth is from Garrett. Why does Kelsey never paint a picture? Paint pictures of Wiley. I don't give an F about cowboys. Can I pet that dog?
Randall Williams
Can I pet that now?
Seth Morris
Well, if you are willing to spend some money, she will do that.
Phil (Engineer)
Yeah, I don't think that get that commission.
Randall Williams
I don't think that brush moves for free.
Seth Morris
The cowboys pay the bills.
Corey Calkins
Wiley is very photogenic.
Randall Williams
Yeah. Beautiful animal. What else we got here?
Phil (Engineer)
Well, here's another caliber question Justin is asking. Does one of you shoot a sig cross and 300 wind mag? And if so, do you like it? I have a Montana bear and Alaska. You know, it's a mushy sentence, but he's got some hunts and he wants to know if that's a good thing.
Seth Morris
To go with Corey.
Corey Calkins
Yeah, I sure do. It's the Sig cross. Sawtooth in a.300 win mag.
Seth Morris
Love it.
Corey Calkins
I. I will say I don't like carrying around the mountains, but when it's time to shoot something, it's a dream, so.
Randall Williams
Well, yeah, I mean, it's worth it. There's no free lunch.
Seth Morris
True.
Randall Williams
I have a Sig Cross. The original Magnum. Not the Sawtooth. And.300 win Mag. And yeah, my. My wife killed a buffalo with it shooting a copper bullet. So just to tie those two questions together, how's that for some hosting?
Seth Morris
Good job, Randall.
Phil (Engineer)
But yeah.
Randall Williams
300 win Mag. Can't go wrong.
Corey Calkins
No.
Randall Williams
Unless you're recoil shy. Then you get a big break.
Phil (Engineer)
Yep.
Randall Williams
Or a can.
Corey Calkins
Or a meat eater suppressor.
Phil (Engineer)
Here's another plug for you. This question's from Dill Bean. Any thoughts on the 100 mile buffer zone bill for quote, border security and SNR? We just released a bonus flop this morning. Steve talks to one of his buddies about this whole topic. You can check that out. It's got Steve's thoughts in there. The thing Steve said that I think kind of sums the whole thing up is if you have a group of people that are trying to do something very unpopular, unsuccessfully, for decades, and then they try to frame. Actually it's about border security.
Seth Morris
Yeah.
Phil (Engineer)
And then they Introduce a bill. It smells fishy.
Randall Williams
So, you know, I don't know enough about it to speak to it knowledgeably.
Phil (Engineer)
Check out the podcast.
Randall Williams
Check out the podcast.
Corey Calkins
Yeah. Just stay out of the wilderness. That's all I have to say.
Phil (Engineer)
Ryan asks Randy, which I guess is something people call you, when. And what was your most recent cased meat meal?
Randall Williams
Great question. Great question.
Corey Calkins
Couldn't have been that long ago.
Randall Williams
No, no.
Corey Calkins
It wasn't Saturday, right? Didn't you say something about a corn dog?
Randall Williams
No, that was the bull that I'm going to talk about. Oh, I'm jumping ahead here. Gosh, that's a good question. I know. I've been eating bratwurst at home regularly. Sorry, Ryan, I don't have a good answer for you. It wasn't that long ago.
Seth Morris
Couple weeks. Gotta be. Yeah, within the last couple.
Randall Williams
Within two weeks. Within two weeks for sure.
Corey Calkins
Well, that could be multiple questions. Cased is in like a sausage or cased is in like the hot case from a. Oh, gas station.
Randall Williams
Oh, it hasn't been that long since I've tickled the hot case at Town Pump.
Corey Calkins
That's where my head was at.
Phil (Engineer)
Tickled the hot case at Town Pump.
Peter MD Advertiser
Yep.
Phil (Engineer)
I think I read some online erotica. Same title.
Randall Williams
Phil, please. You're live on air.
Phil (Engineer)
I know.
Corey Calkins
We got kids.
Randall Williams
What else we got?
Phil (Engineer)
Steve accuses me of having a nun fetish in next week's episode of the Meat Eater podcast. So I don't really. Everything's out the window now.
Seth Morris
Stay tuned, folks. Yeah.
Randall Williams
Should you do one more here?
Seth Morris
Yeah, I don't.
Phil (Engineer)
Let's see what's. Yeah, here's one for all of you. Phil, you're playing Destiny Rising. No, I, I, I, I.
Corey Calkins
This is.
Phil (Engineer)
I don't know if I've said this before. I have played thousands, literal thousands of hours of Destiny 2, and much like my game Fuel, I had to quit that cold turkey. I do not play Destiny anymore. Destiny Rising. You okay, Randall? Destiny Rising is the new mobile Destiny game. I will not touch it. I have never touched it. Take that to the bank. For all of you who care.
Seth Morris
Gosh.
Phil (Engineer)
Which is azorking?
Randall Williams
Well, that's a fantastic listener feedback section. Thanks for wrapping this up, Phil.
Seth Morris
Keep the questions coming, gang.
Randall Williams
Keep them coming. We'd love some more feedback. We're going to do an extended feedback at the end of this episode. My co host just learned. Up next, we're going to speak with Lauren Dolkater, who submitted one of the most hair raising customer service emails in First Light's history. After A tree limb impaled her leg. Lauren, welcome to the show.
Lauren Dolkater
Hello.
Randall Williams
Thank you for joining us. So, as I understand it, you needed a replacement set of kiln base layers after a recent hunt in Wyoming. What were you hunting and when was this?
Lauren Dolkater
It was about five weeks ago. We were hunting archery elk. It was middle of September. And yeah, we were there up near Dubois, Wyoming, hunting elk for about a week. And yeah, it was. The week was off to a great start. We got into some elk and had a lot of. We had a close encounter with a moose. It was just off to a great start. And then Friday on day five, we. Everything kind of changed.
Randall Williams
Yeah. Can you, can you describe the incident that led to your injury here? What happened?
Lauren Dolkater
Yeah, so we were driving a side by side early morning, so it was still dark and we were about 45 minutes to an hour that we needed to get up a pretty rough road to get where we had watched some elk go into some timber the night before. So we felt like we had a good chance, but we needed to get up there before first light. And we've driven up that road many times. But for some reason we were going up and my hunting partner was driving and I was in the passenger seat. And I don't remember if there was like something in the road or just like a really big pothole or something. And he kind of tried to miss it and we got too close to the edge and there was a. We were driving through a burn and there was an old lodge pole tree that was hanging over the edge of the road. And when we hit it, it came through the side by side door and went into my leg.
Peter MD Advertiser
Wow.
Phil (Engineer)
I will just say I have some pictures that Lauren shared with us. They are not gory, but I would say one of them is rather upsetting. At least when I saw it, I got full body chills. So I'm gonna pull that up in a little bit if you don't wanna see that. Look away.
Jordan Sillers
Yeah.
Randall Williams
Lauren, can you describe what was going through your head right as that happened? Did you know right away or did the. Did the side by side immediately come to a stop? Like what was. What was the first. So the first thing that happened there. The next thing that happened?
Lauren Dolkater
Yeah, the side by side came to a complete stop and me and my partner kind of just looked at each other and I felt a pressure against my leg. I didn't really feel any sharp pain or anything. So immediately I just thought that the side by side door kind of like pinned me and my leg was stuck. And then I reached down because he was starting to put it in reverse and I just kind of had a weird feeling and I reached down and I could feel something going into my leg. So I told him to stop and I was like, I think something's in my leg. And he's like, what do you mean? And so I turned on my headlamp and looked down and I could see that that tree was in my leg.
Randall Williams
Oh man.
Seth Morris
Brutal.
Randall Williams
How did, how did your partner respond? Was it just the two of you?
Lauren Dolkater
Yeah, it was just the two of us. He responded pretty well. Obviously we were both shocked he put it in the park and we both work in the medical field, so I feel like that kind of helped us a little bit.
Phil (Engineer)
Yeah, that's a plus.
Lauren Dolkater
Obviously, if you get impaled by something, the last thing you want to do is pull it out, right? So I told him to put it in park and told him to come around the side of the side by side so we could see if I was still attached to the tree or if the branch had broke, which luckily it had. That would have been a whole nother ordeal trying to get off of that. But yeah, just from the crash, the fender flare of the side by side had enough pressure that it broke the branch or end of the tree actually. But there was about three, probably about three feet of it hanging off from my leg. And we were able to get the side by side door open and kind of.
Phil (Engineer)
She'll be right back.
Lauren Dolkater
We were able to get the side by side open and situate the piece of wood into the side by side with me. And I kind of just had to almost stand up with my good leg and hold onto the ceiling of the side by side and keep my legs straight for a 20 minute ride back down the mountain.
Randall Williams
Oh my gosh. And then what?
Phil (Engineer)
What?
Randall Williams
It's obviously at some point you got medical attention from first responders. What was that like? Did you drive to the hospital or did they come out to pick you up or what did that look like?
Lauren Dolkater
So I keep a Garmin inreach for obviously things like this. But I knew, because we've hunted there for a few years, we knew that we were only about 20 minutes from cell service and we needed to get down the mountain anyways. And where we had cell service, we knew an ambulance could get there and there'd be enough room for a helicopter to land. So we got down there, called 911 and they sent a ambulance that was stationed down in Dubois, which was only about 15 minutes from where we were. So they sent an ambulance up and got an IV started and helped me out with meds and trying to figure out if we were able to drive to a hospital because we're about an hour and a half from the nearest hospital.
Randall Williams
And at this point I'm sure the pain had set in.
Lauren Dolkater
Yeah, definitely. It was more so like cramping pain. Like my muscles were obviously trying to reject whatever was in my leg.
Randall Williams
Yeah.
Lauren Dolkater
And I think with enough adrenaline, nothing was sharp pain, but definitely was scared of what kind of outcomes might be ahead. But yeah, so we were on the scene for probably about an hour and then they decided they wanted to fly me to a trauma center because we were over four hour drive from the nearest trauma center. And so yeah, they landed a helicopter and flew me to Idaho Falls.
Randall Williams
Wow. What, after you got to the hospital, what, what were the extent of your injuries and, and how are you doing today?
Lauren Dolkater
I got extremely lucky with the path that the tree went in. It missed bone and arteries and everything. That's super important. It did get my glute muscle a little bit because it went about six inches into my leg. But yeah, I got there. They did some CTs really quick, make sure that I didn't hit any arteries that would cause me to bleed out or anything like that. And I was in surgery within a half hour and they just went in and took it out and cleaned everything. The biggest worry was infection. So the surgeon did really good and got it all cleaned out and yeah, I'm really lucky. I, I was walking within two hours of surgery.
Randall Williams
That's unbelievable.
Lauren Dolkater
Yeah. And yeah, I was actually able to go on a hunt last week.
Randall Williams
That's awesome.
Seth Morris
Nice. That's great.
Corey Calkins
Amazing.
Lauren Dolkater
Yeah.
Randall Williams
Did you get, did you get your replacement base layers yet from first light? I hope the answer is yes, otherwise this can be tremendously embarrassing.
Lauren Dolkater
They, they have sent them, they're on their way. It's more on my end. I'm having a little issues with a change of address situation.
Randall Williams
Oh sure.
Lauren Dolkater
Customer service was great and they sent them out right away and um, yeah, it's turned into quite the story.
Randall Williams
Yeah, that's going to be a story. That's going to be a hunting camp story for the ages.
Lauren Dolkater
Yeah. Yeah. Luckily everything turned out good.
Randall Williams
Yeah, I'm glad, I'm glad to hear that you got back out there. That was my next question is what the rest of your season looks like. So I'm glad to hear that you got back out there and that you weren't more seriously injured by this. It's very lucky that you guys have the medical training that you do. Because I think had some other folks been in that same situation, cooler's heads would not have prevailed.
Lauren Dolkater
Yeah, I'm very thankful for that background.
Randall Williams
Lauren, thanks for, thanks for sharing your story with us. Good luck out there this fall and yeah, incredible story and glad you're okay. And please reach out should anything like this happen again. Fingers crossed it doesn't, but please, please reach out and. And yeah, it's great to chat with you.
Lauren Dolkater
Sounds great. Thank you guys for having me on.
Randall Williams
Thanks, Lauren.
Seth Morris
Thanks, Lauren.
Jordan Sillers
Good luck.
Lauren Dolkater
All right, bye.
Seth Morris
Oh, brutal.
Randall Williams
Yeah, I'm still tense. Yeah, my body's tense.
Corey Calkins
Yeah.
Randall Williams
I knew a friend of my. Sorry. A mom, a mother of one of my friends growing up had a similar deal riding a quad through the woods and had a stick.
Peter MD Advertiser
Right.
Randall Williams
Basically ride up her. The side of her knee and enter.
Corey Calkins
Her leg after getting flipped up from a tire.
Randall Williams
Yeah. Yeah, that's gnarly. That's super gnarly.
Corey Calkins
I think we meant to do this, but it's kind of an ironic show with Halloween tomorrow. We got a lot of gore and murder and you know.
Phil (Engineer)
Yeah.
Corey Calkins
Halloween esque.
Randall Williams
That we did not think about that. But man, those pictures are.
Corey Calkins
Happy Halloween.
Randall Williams
Make me shaky.
Seth Morris
Do you need a sip of water? You good? You need a second?
Randall Williams
No. Okay. No, I'm good. I'm good. It's the responsibility of the host to keep this thing moving. But I am affected by that story and I'm really glad that they sent out those replacement base layers. I figured I could be setting us up for tremendous embarrassment as a company and I was going to offer to send them myself. Go down to the store and use the employee discount and all that, but good on first light.
Corey Calkins
Hey, great customer service.

Jordan Sillers
Love them.
Peter MD Advertiser
Like going on a 10 day moose hunt. I just bring a pack along. Not only that, so they're extra large. Okay, if you're a little baby, you get little baby wipes. If you're a man, you get extra large dude wipes. And when you're out in nature, it's going to inevitably call. So make sure you bring along wet dude wipes and three adventure sizes like day hike single wipes, 18 pack weekend wipers or you know for long trips you got a 48 count pack. And it's not just that. Like when you're out camping just sleeping in a sleeping bag. Let's say you're gone for 10 days, whatever. I use them just to clean up at night. Like, you know, scrub the old pit, scrub your arms if it's all dusty. Just kind of get your neck and everything cleaned up. I love having them with me. Dude wipes. It is the best clean pants down. They're available at Amazon. That's where I usually order mine from. It's on Amazon, but you get them at Walmart nationwide. Fantastic product. Proud to be doing ads for these boys at Dude Wipes.

Randall Williams
Hard pivot Gonna try to regain my composure as we get into another Throwback Thursday and there's no musical.
Phil (Engineer)
No, there is. Streamyard's having some issues today.
Randall Williams
Throwback.
Phil (Engineer)
I can't believe it. Did I mention Steven Brody, our old ass.
Giannis Patelis
Shit.
Randall Williams
For today's Throwback Thursday, we got a real treat for you folks. We each brought in our first bull elk and we're gonna share those stories. Maybe we should go in order of trophy size.
Seth Morris
Oh.
Randall Williams
Because I didn't realize we were bringing in our first six points.
Phil (Engineer)
But, Seth, for those of you who weren't in this room before the show started, this is all Randall has been able to talk about for the last hour.
Randall Williams
Yeah, I thought we were bringing in raghorns. I can't help things. Leaning up against the wall to my.
Phil (Engineer)
Armpit, Seth's like, I can't help it.
Seth Morris
I mean, my first bowl was a six point.
Randall Williams
It's not a great bowl. I mean, it's a good bowl. It's a great first bowl, but I didn't realize that we were going to do this thing. So, Seth, why don't you tell us story of your first bowling? It's.
Seth Morris
It's not a huge six point.
Randall Williams
No, it's not.
Corey Calkins
It's just the biggest bowl in the world.
Randall Williams
Barely. It's barely a six point. Just so everybody knows.
Seth Morris
Is the camera wide enough to get this?
Giannis Patelis
Just.
Phil (Engineer)
Just barely. Seth, this is.
Seth Morris
This is my first. Yeah, let me get to the mic so Phil doesn't yell at me.
Phil (Engineer)
Thank you.
Seth Morris
This is my first bull that I ever killed. And it just so happened that this was back in 2016, my first hunting season in Montana.
Randall Williams
How old were you?
Seth Morris
I don't know. 25? 6.
Jordan Sillers
25.
Seth Morris
26.
Randall Williams
To be 25 again.
Corey Calkins
Young buck.
Seth Morris
But yeah, so I. I just recently become a resident in 2016. I went to FWP headquarters in Helen and picked up my tags. And then the next day, I went up to a hunting spot that I had been scouting.
Randall Williams
Wait, this was literally the day after you bought your tag?
Seth Morris
Yeah.
Randall Williams
Amazing. Yeah.
Seth Morris
And was deer hunting. I was deer hunting this spot that I had been. Been looking at some. Some big deer at. And, you know, I just happened to come across this guy that was bedded in some willows way, way back in there. I was with good buddy Rick Hutton.
Randall Williams
Shout out, Rick. What's up, Rick?
Seth Morris
So, yeah, I ended up shooting this bull at last light. And I, you know, very new to elk hunting at this point in my life and very new to western hunting in general and didn't really totally know what I was doing. So we we gutted this thing and we were six miles from the truck. So instead of cutting it up that night in the dark, we just gutted it and got the guts away from it because we were in some grizz country. Thick, thick grizz country. In fact, every time we pretty much scouted that area, we ran into grizzlies. But yeah, we, we, I gutted this thing, rolled the guts down the hill quite a ways away from it, and we left to come back in the morning to cut it up. Which, you know, in hindsight, I probably would just stayed there and cut the thing up.
Randall Williams
Yeah, but just not shot at.6 miles deep.
Seth Morris
Yeah, that too. But that night. So we, we started hiking back to the, the truck and it was well after dark and the wind picked up and there was like a cold front coming in that night. And so, you know, Rick and I, we were hustling to get out of there. We kind of stripped down to our base layers, you know, so we weren't getting all sweaty and got back to the truck. And Rick was acting real weird and I couldn't figure out what was going on with him. He could like barely talk. He was kind of drooling a little bit, saying he was real hot. Well, you know, later we figured out that Rick had gotten hypothermia walking out of there.
Corey Calkins
Dangerous.
Seth Morris
So, yeah, that was, that was my first experience. Quite an adventure with hypothermia, like seeing that for the first time and, you know, also my first experience killing a six point elk.
Randall Williams
Beautiful.
Seth Morris
So, yeah, that's the story of this guy.
Randall Williams
Thank you, Seth.
Jordan Sillers
Yeah.
Phil (Engineer)
Randall, don't you think we should have started from the smallest to the largest? I think that would have been like a more kind of satisfying progression.
Randall Williams
Yeah, I didn't think about that.
Phil (Engineer)
That's fine.
Corey Calkins
First bulls, they're all the same size in memory.
Randall Williams
This time next year, when we do this again, we'll do it that way.
Corey Calkins
So let's see if we're going in order here.
Randall Williams
I think yours bigger than mine.
Corey Calkins
Is it?
Randall Williams
No. Oh, you want me to go? I'll go.
Seth Morris
No, I'll go.
Randall Williams
Okay.
Corey Calkins
Smallest.
Randall Williams
Please let me go, Let me go.
Corey Calkins
Randall, why don't you go?
Randall Williams
All right.
Seth Morris
Might be close.
Phil (Engineer)
It's gonna be.
Randall Williams
They're really similar.
Seth Morris
Your points are longer.
Jordan Sillers
Hey.
Randall Williams
Yeah, thanks. What, my headset back on? This is a weird way to hold a bowl.
Corey Calkins
Very well done. European mounts, I will say.
Randall Williams
Yeah, this is my first bolt. It's not going for the listening audience. I'm having trouble fitting it in the frame with me not because it's large, but because I don't have good sense of my spatial awareness. So this, this bull I killed in the fall of 2018. 2018, I believe. 2018, 2017, it was the day after Thanksgiving and my, my brother in law was in town from Seattle and he's very interested in hunting and has watched watches Meat eater and never been out hunting. And I had a whitetail bee tag for a unit west of Missoula. And we thought, well, why don't we take Jason out in the morning and shoot a whitetail doe and show him what hunting's all about, you know. And so we drive in there and it's basically like a forest service road. And we'd hike down to the river and there's just some openings and see a lot of deer in there. And we pass a truck on the way in. Because it's the day after Thanksgiving. We pass a truck that's got like eight dudes in it, you know, from 10 years old to 80 years old. And they're like 300 yards from where we're parking. We're like, all right, I guess, you know, we'll get this side. We start walking from the truck. I see a white tailed doe. Phil, cue the picture.
Phil (Engineer)
Oh, absolutely.
Randall Williams
Sorry. Sorry. God, I did this again to you.
Phil (Engineer)
Oh, no, you're fine. This is on me. Randall. I'm the engineer back here. I should be prepared for everything.
Randall Williams
So Sydney, Sydney started to take a picture. I'm setting up to shoot this whitetail doe. And next photo op.
Phil (Engineer)
I believe that was the next photo.
Randall Williams
Yeah. No, you did it right. I just. It's my mistake again.
Corey Calkins
A big doe down in that.
Randall Williams
Yeah, so. So I'm setting up to shoot this doe and it, it wanders behind a little like finger ridge that's, you know, like 30ft tall. Just like a little finger going down to the, to the river bottom. And so I said, oh, perfect, let's drop down there. We'll walk up that finger, and she'll walk up the other side because she was kind of feeding up. And so we start walking up this finger and another doe squirts past. And I think to myself, oh, I should every now and then check over my right shoulder. Instead of just locking in on the left side, we're expecting this doe. I'm like, I should check over my right shoulder just to make sure nothing's over there. And we get a little ways up and I look over my right shoulder and I see this big tan body. And I think, oh, that looks like the color of an elk's body. And then I look again and I'm like, oh, that looks like the color of an elk's neck. And then I realize there's antlers and this thing is bedded broadside to me with just its face behind a tree. Like, the tree was literally only covering its eye so it didn't see us. It's probably at like 50 yards.
Seth Morris
Wow.
Corey Calkins
That's the little luck that it takes to.
Randall Williams
Oh, man.
Corey Calkins
That you stopped, you know, and couldn't see you.
Randall Williams
And so Sydney. Sydney and Jason are standing next to me and they're looking to the left and. And I hear one of them go, oh, there's the doe. And I just go shut the. You know, and. And they have no idea what's happening. And then I start shooting and I shoot this thing. It stands up, two other bulls run off. I shoot it again and it flips over.
Seth Morris
Look at that shot.
Randall Williams
Well, well. So, Phil, go back, go back, go back, go back, go back, go back. Okay, next slide. So Sydney's like. Sydney's like, oh, my God, Randall just shot his first bull. And like, I'm standing here, I just watched the whole thing. And so she started taking photos of me, like walking down to it. And you'll see in this photo that it's lying. It's on a steep slope, its head is kind of tucked under it, and it's lying there. And we walk down to it. And then you'll see in the next photo, all of a sudden it's getting up. And so this thing, as I approached it, it started like donkey kicking. And like I said, its head was wrapped under it. So all of a sudden it flips itself up and over like rodeo clown. I am 10ft away from it and it starts running away. And I'm thinking it's going to run to this truck with these other dudes. And I'm just thinking my first bull is going to be shot by an entire extended clan. And they're going to have a great Thanksgiving Day. And I'm going to have the bitterest Thanksgiving weekend of all time. So then I start shooting it again. So, Phil, if you'll proceed. So we have this whole sequence of photos of it standing up again. Again, you're shoulder and your rifle, you see the. See, rifle shouldered. And I'm like 20 yards away from it. Next one, you look closer than that. Next one. Oh, I mean, I was. I was afraid it was gonna kick me when it initially started freaking out. Next one, he's Off. Next one. Finally.
Seth Morris
There we go.
Randall Williams
After, like, on my last. The last round in the magazine. I mean, he ran to the bottom of the hill and just stood there and I shot him again. And finally he tipped over and walked down there and pretty shocked by the whole thing. This is like, at 9 o'.
Corey Calkins
Clock.
Randall Williams
You can see my face here wearing a lot of Sitka in that photo. But you will see an FHF Bino harness and a first light blaze orange.
Phil (Engineer)
Yeah, the suits aren't watching this. It's fine.
Randall Williams
No, it's fine. It shouldn't be a big deal.
Phil (Engineer)
No.
Randall Williams
And then the next photo, that's me and Sydney. It was a very cool, cool thing to have her there for it. And then next photo, we had a little family. Little family pack out.
Corey Calkins
Nice. Packing out the hooves.
Randall Williams
And then we went to the old Thomas Mar bar in Missoula, watched some football.
Seth Morris
That's great.
Randall Williams
Had a few cold ones. Lovely.
Corey Calkins
You making glue with those hooves or what?
Randall Williams
Yeah, you know, that's. That was a mistake. Like I said, ladies and gentlemen, we're talking bulls. Giannis Patelis just walked into the studio. Giannis Patelis, tell the folks how you're doing.
Giannis Patelis
Well, I'm pretty hungry, Randall. We have a lunch date right now.
Randall Williams
Oh, my God. We're running over on time.
Corey Calkins
It is.
Randall Williams
So you've literally interrupted the live show to tell us that you want to go eat lunch now.
Phil (Engineer)
Yeah.
Randall Williams
Well, we've got one story left here, and it's Corey Calkins. We're telling the story of our first bull elk.
Giannis Patelis
Oh, I'm here to listen.
Randall Williams
Yeah, here's.
Corey Calkins
Here's my first bull.
Randall Williams
I was dandy, 14 or 15. Dandy.
Corey Calkins
I can't quite remember exactly what year this was, but I think it was a sophomore in high school, potentially. Anyway, Southern Montana, opening day. I do remember we glassed up elk the night before, which back then, opener was on a Sunday, if anybody remember, miss those days. And so Saturday, I remember glassing up a herd of elk. My dad and I walked up in the dark, like, trying to get, you know, ahead of everybody else that we could see rolling in with their campers. And we get up on this saddle and then looking down below us, just see headlamps galore coming up towards us, you know, so we're like, okay, well, we should be in the right spot. This is, you know, a few hundred.
Randall Williams
Yards away from where everybody else is coming to us.
Corey Calkins
Yeah, of course, sun comes up, elk are gone, so we're kind of bumming. We hike up above the Saddle to the top of the hill, and lo and behold, here comes this lone bull, tongue just dragging nice, as if he got bumped by somebody else. I want to say it's first 45 minutes of light and he was like.
Randall Williams
I'm there with you.
Corey Calkins
He walked right up to me. 300. Excuse me, this is a 30 out. Six, I want to say, like 60 yards away.
Jordan Sillers
Dumped him.
Seth Morris
That's great.
Jordan Sillers
One shot.
Randall Williams
Fantastic.
Corey Calkins
And yeah, I was pretty tickled, pretty blown away. And as we were packing him out, took multiple trips to get him out, just my dad and I, and we passed this young gal who had harvested a giant six point right by the trailhead.
Seth Morris
Oh, nice.
Corey Calkins
They admitted they got a late start, you know, and came up after first light. And everybody had walked right by this stud six point bowl in the dark.
Randall Williams
You've always got it. You've always got a chance.
Corey Calkins
Yeah. And so we got to see that on the way out. But, yeah, if I remember, my dad shot a spike later that day back when you could shoot spikes around here.
Randall Williams
Very cool. So, yeah, thanks for sharing.
Seth Morris
That's a great, great day of elk hunting. Yeah.
Phil (Engineer)
And Seth, really quick since you went through the trouble of sending it to me.
Seth Morris
Oh, there's your photo.
Randall Williams
Oh, there it is. Look at that handsome young buck at 25 years old. He's got a full mustache still. That's really nice.
Corey Calkins
Way to go.
Phil (Engineer)
He has an Asia BHA sticker on his.
Randall Williams
Yeah, you're walking the walk and talking the talk.
Corey Calkins
And Rick knows how.
Seth Morris
I was wearing First Light back then, too, and wearing fh.
Phil (Engineer)
Fhf.
Randall Williams
Not all of us were doing side work for first. Lighting FHF and getting free stuff all the time.
Seth Morris
No, I bought that stuff.
Randall Williams
Okay.
Corey Calkins
I would have been wearing some Walmart special.
Randall Williams
That brings us to the end of today's program. We've got a little bit of time for listener feedback.
Phil (Engineer)
I know Giannis is hungry. I will. The 1. The first question I will bring up is her next gun. It says, why is Giannis not in Wisconsin?
Corey Calkins
Oh, capital question.
Seth Morris
Oh, good question.
Giannis Patelis
That is a great question. My cameras are blowing up. Everybody's killing deer in Wisconsin. And I'm not going for until a week from Friday. I'm going on the 7th because I'm going to be at the Milwaukee meat eater store on the 7th for a meet and greet. So if you're anywhere near Milwaukee, you've already killed a buck. And you don't need to be in the woods on the 7th in the evening. Come and see me at the meat eater. Store in Milwaukee. Yeah, I'll be hunting on the eighth Saturday morning.
Seth Morris
In my opinion, Johnny, the eighth is the best day out of the year to be in the woods. So you'll be there? I'll be there. That's great, Phil.
Randall Williams
What else we got here?
Phil (Engineer)
Spencer asks what's for lunch.
Randall Williams
What is for lunch?
Giannis Patelis
Bozeman Market in Delhi.
Phil (Engineer)
Oh, great.
Giannis Patelis
Your choice.
Randall Williams
You mean the same place we ate yesterday?
Phil (Engineer)
Giannis's favorite place?
Corey Calkins
Yum.
Phil (Engineer)
Crank says that they shot a buck while listening to the podcast.
Randall Williams
That's awesome. That's awesome.
Phil (Engineer)
Way to go.
Randall Williams
Send that in. We'll air it the next time I host.
Corey Calkins
How did you manage to do that?
Randall Williams
Actually, maybe we'll even have Crank as a guest. Crank Email radio@theme eater.com.
Seth Morris
Is that right?
Randall Williams
Is that right, Phil?
Phil (Engineer)
Yeah, that sounds right.
Randall Williams
Yeah. Let's, let's, let's. Let's hear the story of shooting a buck while listening to Meat Eater radio live.
Corey Calkins
My guess is from the truck, maybe.
Seth Morris
A big old deer blind.
Randall Williams
Let's let him tell his story. Him or her?
Corey Calkins
Oh, it's just.
Jordan Sillers
Yeah.
Phil (Engineer)
Mystery Canadian hunter. 21 question for Randall. You just said. Oh, to be 25 again. I'm turning 25 in a few months. What should I be planning for to make the most out of being 25?
Randall Williams
I like the look of that bridge. And your profile picture.
Seth Morris
I bet a catfish lives under.
Randall Williams
That's what I was thinking. That's the first thing I thought.
Phil (Engineer)
One or two.
Randall Williams
If I was 25 again. That's a great question.
Corey Calkins
Go for a big hike. Your 40 year old self would be like, holy cow.
Randall Williams
Think about. Think about a place where you'd be like, there's nobody 40 years old that can be in here. Elk hunting. And then I'd go there.
Corey Calkins
Yeah, there you go. Go do something stupid.
Randall Williams
And I'd just eat everything.
Phil (Engineer)
Nate says. How early do I start monitoring questions for chat? Can I dump them before the waiting music even starts? Yes, you can get them in early. I can see them. It makes my job easier.
Corey Calkins
Actually, Phil doesn't lose anything.
Phil (Engineer)
Mogor, our guy. Yesterday I watched the Meat Eater Muzzleloader episode. Steve mentioned that Seth is really skilled with it, but my question is, have Randall or Corey ever had the chance to harvest game with a muzzle?
Randall Williams
Nope.
Phil (Engineer)
A loader?
Corey Calkins
No, I'm usually tagged out by then.
Phil (Engineer)
Let's see. Laurie, I don't think there's any bird people in this room, but Lori's asking what your go to grouse slayer is.
Seth Morris
Ooh, shotgun.
Phil (Engineer)
She might be asking for more specifics.
Corey Calkins
But, you know, mine's an arrow with a judo point. Typically in archery season while I'm chasing elk.
Seth Morris
12 gauge.
Corey Calkins
22S are great too, though.
Randall Williams
22S are great. The only grass I've killed have been with. 22 caliber pistols.
Phil (Engineer)
Great. Well, Giannis is looking at his phone. He looks starved.
Randall Williams
Yannis, how many more listener questions?
Seth Morris
Are you bored?
Randall Williams
One more. Let's do one more.
Giannis Patelis
One more.
Phil (Engineer)
Aaron says, I recently brined a turkey breast for 24 hours, but it came out too salty. How long do y' all brine for?
Seth Morris
Yanni, this is a good question for you.
Giannis Patelis
Yeah, it sounds like that was too long. I believe that in the Meat Eater Cookbook, it's like six to eight. If that happens, you can desalt a brine turkey breast by just putting it into just plain cold water. And it'll actually suck through osmosis. The salt will come back out into the water. But yeah, I guess you could. You could check it by just cutting a little sliver off the turkey breast next time and frying it real quick and eating it and seeing how salty it is.
Randall Williams
Well, that was the most substantive thing that's been said in the past 66 minutes, so I think that's a good place to wrap up. Corey, Seth, as always, a true pleasure. Phil the engineer. Wonderful job. We'll streamline our process next week, so fewer hiccups, folks out there. We thank you for listening and we will see you next week. Happy hunting.
Seth Morris
Thanks, guys.
Phil (Engineer)
Happy Halloween.
