Foreign. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host Spencer Newharth and today we're joined by Randall Brody, Corinne, Nate, John and Roman. This is a 10 round quiz show with questions from meat eaters. Four verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking. There is a prize. MeatEater will donate $500 to the Conservation organization of the winner's choosing for the set of the week. This week we're looking at the Shelby Index. For today's episode she set a personal best for a new Shelby Index record. Here's what we're gonna do if she wins today's show, we're gonna make it a thousand dollar donation instead of $500.
Brody Henderson
Did you clear that with the power set B?
Spencer
No, no. I just assume one of you is going to beat her despite her high score. We'll get to her score in a minute. Now we have an IFAQ. If you have an IFAQ, send it to triviator.com with the subject line IFAQ. Sarah Cinco says my local tavern has recently decided to install a night of trivia and I volunteered to host. I'm wondering what tips or tricks you could suggest to help make this event fun and successful for all. Randall, you're a bar night tavern going trivia connoisseur.
Randall Brody
Yes.
Spencer
What advice could you give to Sarah? She wants to be a great host.
Randall Brody
I have three pieces of advice.
Spencer
Okay.
Randall Brody
Two of them I've thought of. The third one will come to me. Number one is if there's a limit on the number of people that can sit at a table, enforce it.
Spencer
Okay.
Randall Brody
When there's 10 people sitting at a table and then every other table has
Spencer
three or four people, you don't like that?
Randall Brody
Just be like, hey guys, you gotta break. If you're playing, you gotta break up the group.
Spencer
It's just.
Randall Brody
It just. It's a no brainer. What are they gonna say? Oh no, we want to have more people than is allowed. Number two is it's not all about you played some bar trivia games where the guys treating it like a. Like a one man show, an open mic, and it's like, did you practice all these one liners on your parents before you left home tonight? You know, and I like to just say keep it about the game. It's fun to have a couple cracks here and there, but otherwise, you know, just. Just play the game straight. Like people are there for the questions.
Brody Henderson
Randall, how important are drink specials?
Spencer
Very important. I doubt Sarah has that kind of power.
Brody Henderson
Oh, come on. She can. She can do it.
Randall Brody
There was a before. Before it was the Thomas Marbar in Missoula. They used to have trivia night there and it was like eight dollar pictures of flat tire to the point that I cannot.
Brody Henderson
Flat tire or fat Tire?
Nate Mason
Fat.
Randall Brody
Fat Tire. This bodes poorly for today's performance. That's like the swill version of Fat Tire. I can't smell the stuff anymore without getting sick. I mean, just like six years of every Tuesday night drinking Fat Tire until.
Spencer
What a funny promotion.
Randall Brody
Yeah, yeah, it was odd. It's not like a very. I just feel like that's A weird beer to drink in large volumes.
Spencer
Yeah.
Randall Brody
Uh, my third point about trivia is see if they can start it early. Don't start trivia at eight.
Phil
Yeah, that's the. That's a one ding against the Molly here in town.
Randall Brody
Yeah, I mean, it's great trivia. I like the questions, but it'd be great if you could get the thing going at. At 7, 6, 30 even. I feel like, is there's. I feel like most people are just going to go there from work.
Spencer
Oh, okay.
Randall Brody
Instead of going home. There's no reason to start trivia at 8:00 unless you're doing two games.
Spencer
Bill, any advice for Sarah? You love bar trivia.
Phil
Yeah, this is kind of a follow up to Randall's. Like, it's not about you comment. But at the same time, I do think you need to kind of present an air of confidence. Like you need to make the players believe that they're on a steady ship and that the captain is trustworthy, because once holes start being poked, the whole thing could fall apart.
Randall Brody
I also want to tip my hat to Sarah and to the bar that is initiating this. There's. There's not enough good trivia out there in the world. And kudos for stepping up.
Spencer
We don't know the name of the place. She says local tavern. Any other advice for Sarah?
Randall Brody
Yeah, I got one.
Spencer
Okay.
Nate Mason
I would say make the questions easier than you think you need to make them.
Spencer
That's exactly what I was going to say to Sarah. I think it's important, Sarah, that you have someone to test these on. Like I have the Shelby index. And that is effective to. To an extent. But yeah. Assume that your audience needs. They'll have more fun if the questions tend to be easier than harder.
Brody Henderson
She could send them to Nate to test them out.
Spencer
There you go.
Randall Brody
And if I may add one more point just on format, there's some bar trivia games where you write your 10 answers for the round on a single sheet of paper and take it up after. There's some bar trivia games where they have you write an answer on a single piece of paper and run it up after every question. Don't do that.
Spencer
Oh, you don't like that one?
Randall Brody
There's too much standing up and sitting down. That's not what we came for. And then it's like someone gets someone.
Spencer
Class somebody.
Randall Brody
Yeah, someone who. Who has the chair on that corner gets stuck just getting up and you're gonna miss all the funny banter.
Spencer
Yeah.
Randall Brody
So those are just my thoughts.
Spencer
Okay, Spencer, if I may. Good advice for Sarah. Oh, what else?
Randall Brody
I have a quick announcement.
Spencer
Yes, please.
Randall Brody
Hello, meat eater. Trivia, listeners. On Friday, March 13, an episode of Trivia was recorded in which I said several things I later regretted. They are as follows.
Spencer
Oh, this is from you.
Randall Brody
I don't care. Terrible question. Hey, Maggie, look at the scoreboard. I don't care. Don't be a smart ass, Spencer. And I don't want to be here anymore. I'd just like to apologize for the listeners for all of that negativity and boorish behavior. There's too much of it in the world, and I regret my partner contributing to that. I do stand by my critique of the question about Revolvers and about the California gold Rush. And I wish I'd remembered to mention the film Norbit when we were discussing Eddie Murphy films. That's all.
Spencer
Okay, thank you. That will satisfy some folks.
Nate Mason
We need more of that in this world. Yeah, good.
Spencer
Good addition. We have a little bit of housekeeping. This is geography related housekeeping. On a previous episode of Trivia, I said in the flavor text that Harvard University's arboretum is located in Connecticut, but of course, that's wrong. It's located in Boston, Massachusetts, a full 50 miles from the Connecticut border. And in a different episode, Randall said he didn't think they had menards in Ohio, but that's wrong. There are 32 Menards in Ohio. Phil has a store map for Randall. It's as though they've built menards on top of menards.
Randall Brody
Yeah, I guess my question is, when did they move into Ohio, you think
Spencer
in the last month?
Randall Brody
No, but I haven't lived in Ohio for 20 years. More than 20 years. So I think that's fair.
Spencer
Okay. That's part of your culture. Menards.
Randall Brody
Yeah. Shout out to Loveland. Right. On the Little Miami River.
Spencer
Shout out to Loveland.
Brody Henderson
You need to go back there and do a little tree stand hunt with Kenyon or somewhere.
Randall Brody
Oh, I'd love to do that. I'd love to do that. I'd like to just make a whole series where I just live in Ohio and do all of my favorite things. All right, I'm gonna sell that to the suits.
Spencer
The Shelby index for today is a 6.67. So I'm putting us on. Perfect.
Brody Henderson
Wait a minute. Say that again.
Spencer
6.67. This is the first time we've added two thirds of a point.
Randall Brody
She got exciting.
Spencer
Two thirds of a question.
Randall Brody
So the winner should get.
Spencer
Well, 13.3. So I'm putting us on perfect score alert again. If nobody Beats Shelby today. If nobody gets a seven, it's going to be a thousand dollar donation.
Brody Henderson
Are we gonna get like scores in like thirds today? No, Randall had seven and a third
Spencer
exclusively for the Shelby index. That's. That's it.
Randall Brody
I like it.
Spencer
And with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop. Look, I need to know what I stand to win.
Randall Brody
Everything.
Spencer
How's that?
Randall Brody
You stand to win everything.
Spencer
Game on, suckers. Question one.
Brody Henderson
You gonna join us? Are you gonna keep typing on that phone?
Corinne
Yeah, I'm playing wordle.
Randall Brody
Wow.
Spencer
Turtle. She's playing turtle.
Corinne
Turtle. Turtle.
Spencer
Question one. The topic is fishing. This first great question is via Chris Porter. And as always, this will be multiple choice. Which of these rivers has the highest elevation? Is it Yellowstone River, Niobrara River, Tennessee river, or Columbia River?
Nate Mason
I hate you, Chris.
Spencer
Which of these rivers has the highest elevation?
Randall Brody
Chris Porter.
Spencer
This is Chris Porter. Yellowstone, Niobrara, Tennessee Columbia.
Randall Brody
If it's the Chris Porter I'm thinking of, that's a good guy.
Corinne
If we don't know what states a certain river runs through, are you able to.
Spencer
I'm not going to help you with that one. Which of these rivers has the highest elevation? Yellowstone, Niobrara, Tennessee, Columbia. No, no confidence.
Nate Mason
Zero room.
Spencer
Brody, do you have it nailed? Narrowed down to a few, yeah. Okay, I'm just gonna stick with it. Which I'm gonna stick with what it should be.
Randall Brody
Go with what you know.
Spencer
Highest elevation. The Yellowstone River, Niobrara River, Tennessee river, or Columbia River.
Brody Henderson
I'll be real mad when it's what it not should be.
Spencer
Everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Nate says Columbia, Roman, Columbia, Randall, Yellowstone. John, Columbia, Corinne, Columbia, Brody, Yellowstone. The correct answer is the Yellowstone River. Brody and Randall got that one right. The highest point of the Tennessee river is 800ft, of the Columbia is 2,700ft, of the Niobrara is 5,500ft and of the Yellowstone is 11,000ft. The Yellowstone is formed near you peak in northwest Wyoming, where small streams combine to make the longest undammed river in the lower 48.
Brody Henderson
If you want a like badass backcountry trip, like, go into the thoroughfare in the headwaters of the Yellowstone. Bring bear spray.
Spencer
It would look very unfamiliar.
Brody Henderson
It's super cool country in there.
Spencer
11,000ft. That's twice Steven High.
Randall Brody
He's just giving us two middle fingers.
Spencer
Twice as high as the next closest of the niobrara River. Question 2. The topic is wildlife. Stanley and Zero learned that eating onions will prevent the highly venomous yellow spotted lizard from biting them in this 2003 movie.
Nate Mason
We're back.
Spencer
Nate with a quick answer. Stanley and Zero learn that eating onions will prevent the highly venomous yellow spotted lizard from biting them in this 2003 movie.
Phil
This is big. Millennial core.
Nate Mason
I think this is. This is the first movie that's, like, squarely in my aperture.
Randall Brody
Is this an adult destroys for children or for people that are older?
Nate Mason
Wouldn't you like to know?
Spencer
It's got an X.
Nate Mason
No hints.
Roman
John, what's going on, man?
Brody Henderson
Struggling.
Phil
You got this.
Randall Brody
Yeah.
Spencer
You young. Rough start.
Randall Brody
John was born in 2001.
Spencer
1998.
Randall Brody
That's close enough. That's pretty good.
Corinne
Gosh, I'm so much older.
Spencer
Roman, do you have this one right?
Roman
I do. I'm so excited.
Spencer
Okay.
Roman
I've never felt so good.
Spencer
Stanley and Zero learned that eating onions will prevent the highly venomous yellow spotted lizard from biting them in this 2003 movie. Phil, we're gonna get a movie review from you.
Brody Henderson
Is this movie live action or anime?
Nate Mason
No hints.
Spencer
Not giving you any hints.
Nate Mason
Close the gap, baby.
Spencer
We're back. Roman, Randall, and Brody, the only players to get question one right. They have blank whiteboards for question two. Stanley and Zero learn that eating onions will prevent the highly venomous yellow spotted lizard from biting them in this 2003 movie. Randall, do you like your answer?
Randall Brody
I've never seen my answer.
Spencer
Okay.
Randall Brody
It involves animals.
Spencer
And do you think that Nate and Roman would have seen this movie and like this movie?
Randall Brody
My guess.
Spencer
Yeah. Which is the energy they're giving off.
Randall Brody
Maybe.
Spencer
Okay.
Randall Brody
I don't know.
Spencer
John, do you have a guess?
John
No, I got nothing.
Spencer
All right. Brody, do you like your answer?
Brody Henderson
I don't have an answer, so, no. I. I detest my answer.
Spencer
Does everybody give up? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Nate and Roman say holes. Randall, Madagascar. John without an answer. Without an answer. Brody without an answer. The correct answer is holes. H O L E S. Is that like a cartoon?
Roman
What is it based on a book.
Spencer
A great book based on a book for. Don't know, like, teen.
John
Middle grade.
Spencer
Yeah. Middle schoolers.
Brody Henderson
I. I remember this movie now. I never saw it, but it. In that troublemaker actor who's a real shaker now.
Phil
That was pre Mental Break Shil.
Nate Mason
They survive off sploosh.
Phil
That's right.
Spencer
Exactly. Although the yellow spotted lizard is real, the movie uses bearded dragons to portray them. The real yellow spotted lizard is found. Is found from Texas to Panama and does have a venomous bite, but it's far Less toxic than the movie describes. According to hol's lore, the Lizard has exactly 11 spots, but by the time you get close enough to count them, you'll already be dead. And of course, they hate the taste of, quote, onion blood. Phil, did you love the movie Holes?
Phil
It's. I love the book and the movie, I think is a great adaptation. It's got an awesome cast too. It's Sigourney Weaver, Tim Blake Nelson, who kicks ass. John Voight, Henry Winkler. Yeah, it's Henry Winkler's in that. He plays the dad, Shias. What?
Randall Brody
What's the author?
Phil
Louis Sakar, who wrote a bunch of
Spencer
kid books, had an iconic cover as well. I think if you've seen it, you'd know Nate Roman. Did you guys love holes?
Nate Mason
Oh, yeah, dude, that's like right up there with the Hardy boys.
Spencer
That's in the same tier of. If you're a 12 year old boy, you read Hatchet and holes, those would be hatchet books.
Brody Henderson
That's back when Nate used to draw as he does right now. Like draw guns on pieces of paper.
Nate Mason
Yeah. Like guys fighting each other on mountains and stuff.
Brody Henderson
Yep.
Roman
Stanley's last name is Yelnance, which is what backwards? Randall.
Spencer
Stanley.
Brody Henderson
Oh, sorry.
Spencer
Wow.
Brody Henderson
Sorry. Sorry.
Spencer
So creative question 3.
Nate Mason
This feels good when you know a whole bunch of stuff that Randall and Brody don't know.
Spencer
The topic is ecology. Add that to your movie club.
Randall Brody
On holes.
Spencer
Add that to your movie club.
Corinne
I was going to ask what the theme is there.
Nate Mason
Digging holes.
Spencer
This next great question is the Adam license.
Phil
Sorry, I've got. I've got one more thing to add. The movie's great because it's like a last vestige of when they used to rap for through the plot of the movie during the credits, so.
Spencer
Oh, yeah. Doesn't Shia LaBeouf.
Phil
Shia raps. Dig it. Oh, oh, dig it. Yeah, they just. Yeah. If you want to hear a recap of what you just watched, question three,
Spencer
the topic is I call is ecology. In this next great question is via Adam Leister, also known as the bush. This region of Australia refers to the continent's interior that's famous for its deserts, savannas and shrublands, also known as the bush. This region of Australia refers to the continent's interior that's famous for its deserts, savannas and shrublands. Corinne, you have this one, right?
Corinne
Yes.
Spencer
Randall, you have this one, right?
Randall Brody
Boy, I hope so.
Spencer
Okay.
Brody Henderson
Why am I drawing a glance after
Randall Brody
not knowing about the movie Holes? I find myself.
Brody Henderson
Oh, yeah.
Randall Brody
In a bit of a hole.
Spencer
You must have Just been slightly too old in 2000 to.
Randall Brody
Yeah, 2003.
Brody Henderson
Yeah.
Spencer
Yeah.
Phil
Rick Fox plays a character named Clyde. Clyde sweet feet.
Spencer
That's right. In Randall's sweet spot.
Randall Brody
Yeah.
Spencer
Rick Fox film.
Randall Brody
That's a good guy.
Spencer
Also known as the bush, this region of Australia refers to the continent's interior that's famous for its deserts, savannahs, and shrublands. Brody, do you have this one right now?
Brody Henderson
I think I do now.
Spencer
Yeah.
Brody Henderson
Yeah.
Corinne
Brody, is that a new first light?
Brody Henderson
The wick.
Corinne
Oh, it's nice.
Brody Henderson
Lightweight. Love it.
John
It's a new heather gray color, I guess.
Spencer
Right.
Corinne
Okay.
Spencer
Is that ash gray?
Corinne
Have it in new.
John
It's also going to be available in black.
Randall Brody
Oh.
Spencer
What's been hot at the store lately, John? What are people buying up there?
Brody Henderson
Well, not bear rugs.
John
Not bear rugs. No. Still working on that.
Spencer
That Brody's bear rug.
John
But a lot of turkey stuff has been becoming popular. Turkey season's less than a month out, so first light turkey vests have been a very hot seller so far. The approach hoodie, which was a 2025 first light product. Think of it as like a wick hoodie, but with the integrated face mask. Yeah. All the turkey stuff. Phelps Easy. Clucker. Diaphragm. That one goes out the door pretty quickly. So if you're in Bozeman, feel free to stop by a store, get stocked up for turkey.
Randall Brody
This guy's good.
Spencer
You're in good hands.
Corinne
Store online.
Brody Henderson
As far as social media videos go. Like the crew at the Bozeman meat eater store, man, they, like, knock it out.
Randall Brody
How's the morale doing? As the morale doing at the store?
John
Morale?
Brody Henderson
Yeah.
Nate Mason
Couldn't be higher.
Randall Brody
That's why I go there.
Spencer
That's good. One more time. Also known as the bush, this region of Australia refers to the continent's interior that's famous for its deserts, south savannahs and shrubland. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Nate says the Outback. Roman, the Outback. Randall, the Outback. John, the Outback. Corin says Tasmania. Brody says the Outback. The correct answer is the Outback.
Corinne
I thought you were going for a knock.
Brody Henderson
Come on. There's a whole chain of restaurants named after it. Corinne.
Spencer
Although about 75% of Australia is considered the outback, only about 55% of the continent's population lives there. The area is known for its mar like appear, mars like appearance, unique wildlife, and aboriginal people. It's also home to the dingo fence, which is the world's longest fence at 3,500 miles long. It creates a dingo free zone for sheep herders.
Nate Mason
That looks like the dmz, dude.
Spencer
There is a map of that dingo fence.
Randall Brody
Why didn't they just do a straight line?
Brody Henderson
And it's seriously like there's not dingoes on the other side.
Spencer
They. They say there are some holes in it and there's certainly some ding made it through. But for the most part it does its job. Phil has a photo, an aerial photo of the dingo fence as well.
Nate Mason
How does that compare to the length of the Great Wall?
Spencer
I don't know. This is the longest fence though. 3,500 miles long. How long is the Great Wall?
Nate Mason
I have no idea.
Roman
I don't know.
Randall Brody
I just know I watched a video the other day of Anthony Edwards on the Great Wall of China and he said that shit steep.
Spencer
Okay.
Randall Brody
That's the only Great Wall fact I have.
Spencer
Reference question for the topic is hunting. This next great question is via Lauren Hope. Leon Leonwood created this type of boot in 1912 by combining a leather upper with a rubber lower shell. Not looking for the brand. We are looking for what that type of boot is called. Leon Leonwood, damn it. Created this type of boot in 1912 by combining a leather upper with a rubber lower shell.
Nate Mason
There's a name.
Corinne
Dude, I totally forget what this hole. I mean, half of you guys have that kind of boot.
Brody Henderson
Yeah, I don't. I don't think there should be any chit chat about this particular question.
Spencer
Corinne, do you have this kind of boot at home?
Corinne
I do not.
Spencer
Okay. Do you, Brody?
Brody Henderson
I do.
Spencer
John, do you have this type of boot?
John
I do not actually. I used to, but wore them out pretty good.
Spencer
Randall, you have this one, right?
Brody Henderson
I do.
Spencer
Do you own this boot?
Randall Brody
I own a pair of these boots that I won from Schnee.
Spencer
Okay.
Randall Brody
When Matt Miller.
Brody Henderson
That's a big.
Randall Brody
It's not.
Brody Henderson
It's not.
Randall Brody
I was going to say whatever.
Nate Mason
Sorry, I don't think I have this right now.
Spencer
I'm not sure.
Nate Mason
Do you have flip them over.
Roman
I'm feeling good about it, but your brand point kind of threw me off.
Spencer
Now looking for the brand.
Nate Mason
That's why I feel good about mine.
Spencer
Of boot?
Randall Brody
Yeah.
Spencer
Leon Leonwood created this type of Boot in 1912.
Nate Mason
Is that his real name?
Spencer
By combining a leather.
Randall Brody
You're gonna kick yourself for making a big deal out of his name with a rubber lower?
Spencer
Probably not, no.
Randall Brody
I mean you won't kick yourself.
Corinne
Totally forgot.
Randall Brody
Literally. But figure you're gonna go.
Spencer
Everybody ready? Dude, Go ahead and reveal your answers. Nate says the duck boots. Oh, Roman says pack boot. Randall says pack boot. John without an answer. K answer. Brody says duck boot. The correct answer is the duck boot, also known as the bean boot or the main hunting shoe. So we'd also accept those answers.
Corinne
O m a I n like the state.
Nate Mason
I would like to see you kick yourself.
Corinne
We won't forget this.
Randall Brody
Would you get on to his name, please? Spencer?
Spencer
L.L. bean designed the the duck boot to survive hunting season in Maine. His idea was to combine the comfort of a leather boot with the durability of a rubber boot. But the concept near make it off the ground. After 90 of the first 100 pairs were returned, customers found that the single stitch easily tore, which got Leon to instead go with a triple stitch that is still used today.
Nate Mason
Great flavor text. I I They're kind of dead to me now once they got rid of their lifetime warranty.
Randall Brody
That's because people are monsters.
Nate Mason
Yeah, it's true.
Roman
So bean boot would have been wrong.
Nate Mason
Spencer.
Spencer
I would take bean boot if you said bean boot, but if you just said L.L. bean did not want that as your answer. Question five. The topic is natural history. This is our listener question of the week, which was won by William Meyer for sending this great question. William is going to get a board game signed by the crew. If you want a chance to win the listener question of the week, then send your question to trivia atthe meat eater.com. some scholars believe this nursery rhyme was inspired by the Native American practice of suspending birch cribs in trees. We will get a scoreboard update from Phil the engineer after this. We'll find out if the Shelby Index is in danger of winning or losing today. Some scholars believe this nursery rhyme was inspired by the Native American practice of suspending birch cribs in trees.
Nate Mason
I think I have like the sounds right but not the words.
Spencer
See if you have the name.
Randall Brody
So is is a pack boot an insulated no pack boots?
Nate Mason
A modified version that he he used the the bean boot or the duck boot and inspired his pack boots.
Randall Brody
Gotcha.
Nate Mason
And it was like, hey, we need these to be better hikers.
Randall Brody
Gotcha.
Nate Mason
I don't know how I know that.
Roman
Yeah, well, you know so much about boots, Nate.
Nate Mason
I like boots.
Spencer
I feel like a pack boot doesn't exclusively have to have rubber on the bottom either, do they? I think they do. Yeah. I thought you'd see leather.
Randall Brody
It's a rubber. It's a rubber lower, a leather upper.
Spencer
Duck boots. Some scholars. This nursery rhyme is inspired by the Native American practice of suspending birch cribs. In trees. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Nate says, Rockabye Baby. Roman says Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Randall Rockabye baby. John without an answer. Corinne says lullaby baby. Brody says Rockabye baby. The correct answer is Rock a Bye baby. It's unclear what the inspiration was for Rockabye Baby. With theories ranging from Egyptian deities to English royalty. Some believe the song was written by Mayflower colonists who observed different tribes place birch cradles in trees. This practice was done to keep babies safe while adults hunted, gathered and worked fields. The baskets were suspended from branches, providing a swinging motion that soothed the infants. Phil, we're halfway through the game of Trivia. Give us a scoreboard update at halftime.
Phil
Corinne is on the board with zero points. John has one, Roman has two. Randall has three. And tied up in first place with four points are Nate Mason and Brody Henderson.
Spencer
Game going into the back.
Nate Mason
This is when I crash and burn.

Spencer
the topic is hunting. This three letter acronym which Remington says is quote one of today's most popular types of turkey hunting shells refers to ammo that uses tungsten pellets.
Nate Mason
Oh, I got so many questions about this.
Spencer
Okay, Brody will be able to help you answer them.
Nate Mason
Sweet.
Spencer
This three letter acronym which Remington says is one of today's most popular types.
Brody Henderson
What's this thing?
Spencer
Air Turkey hunting shell. Tomorrow refers to ammo.
Brody Henderson
No.
Spencer
Then I can Tungsten pellets.
Brody Henderson
I can't. I'll talk about this afterwards.
Spencer
It would be a hint if I said okay Again, this is question six. Topic is hunting. This three letter acronym which Remington says is one of today's most popular types of turkey hunting. Shel refers to ammo that uses tungsten pellets.
Brody Henderson
You got one right.
Spencer
Corinne likes Corinne's answer. Roman John, do you have your answers? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Nate says tss. Trs Randall tss. John and Corinne and Brody say tss. The correct answer is tss. TSS stands for Tungsten Super Shot. These shells Use a tungsten alloy that is 22% more dense than standard tungsten and 50, 56% more dense than lead. TSS shells have become more popular in the last decade with NWTF saying that they have, quote, pushed the boundaries for hunters on what used to be considered the max range for lethal turkey shots.
Brody Henderson
Tune in to Meat Eater News. Yeah, we got a segment coming up on tungsten ammo.
Spencer
Okay.
Nate Mason
Is it how expensive it is?
Brody Henderson
It has to do with that, dude. 500 tungsten, you gotta tune.
Nate Mason
Okay, I'll tune it. Well, I'm, like, buying shells this week,
Brody Henderson
but if you've noticed, if you're trying to buy this, like, if you waited to the last minute to buy this stuff, it's expensive.
Nate Mason
100.
Brody Henderson
You can find it.
Spencer
Is it. Is it tariff related?
Nate Mason
That's part of it.
Spencer
So I feel like this is from Geopolitics. Okay. And that news episode will be dropping the day after this episode, so you'll get all informed. What other TSS questions did you have, Nate?
Nate Mason
Well, is it worth it?
Spencer
Yes, worth it.
Nate Mason
It's worth.
Brody Henderson
If you like shooting turkeys at 60.
Nate Mason
I've never shot a turkey before.
Spencer
Best way to kill a gobbler.
Nate Mason
Yeah, I don't know.
Brody Henderson
Like, it's a game changer.
Spencer
20 bucks a shell, dude.
Ad Voice
Well, not.
Brody Henderson
I mean, like, you just need one this year. Like, in years previously.
Spencer
That's expensive.
Nate Mason
I'm operating on the market margin here.
Brody Henderson
Five, six bucks a shell. Like, sure, it's worth it.
Spencer
Put in the black channel, Nate. You could ask, see if anyone has some old tss.
Nate Mason
They would say, dude, I've asked for enough free crap. I've used up all mine. My chips.
Spencer
Speaking of turkeys, next week is turkey week here at meat eater. Starting March 30, you'll get our best turkey hunting content across our website, podcasts, and social media. We'll also have sales and turkey week sweepstakes that includes $13,000 in gear and a 2027 Rio Grande guided hunt. Head over to the media on March 30.
Brody Henderson
I want to win that.
Nate Mason
How many yards does it add to your effective range?
Brody Henderson
Like, I'm not going to answer that in the way you want me to.
Nate Mason
Okay.
Brody Henderson
I've killed multiple gobblers. 60 yards.
Spencer
Got it.
Nate Mason
So, like, what's typical?
Brody Henderson
40 if I was shooting lead number five. Yeah, 40.
Nate Mason
Dude, if a turkey walks by at 50 yards, I will buy you a something.
Brody Henderson
I'm not going.
Nate Mason
What you're saying I'm not gonna buy tss? I'm just not Going, you're just gonna
Spencer
get closer to them than that.
Nate Mason
That's what I'm saying.
Brody Henderson
If you're a really good turkey hunter and a really good caller, you don't need it.
Nate Mason
I'm zero things.
Spencer
Yeah, I like bush.
Brody Henderson
Like sneaking up now.
Nate Mason
That sounds good.
Spencer
Question 7. Topic is wildlife. This next great question is via Sammy Stone. Marmots were given the nickname Blank Pig because of their squeal. That's used to signal danger.
Nate Mason
I don't know.
Spencer
Okay, Nate, the guy that you're competing with, Brody, seems to not know this one. Marmots were given the nickname Blake.
Brody Henderson
You know what a marmot is?
Nate Mason
I can point one out because I think I saw a dead one in Korea once.
Spencer
It's used to signal.
Randall Brody
Are they in Korea?
Brody Henderson
You may have.
Randall Brody
They might be.
Spencer
They're pretty, like, cosmopolitan Animal Mongolia.
Nate Mason
Yeah. The tracks. Well, they didn't call them this. That here.
Randall Brody
Nate, what are you. Are you shooting a 20 gauge or 12 gauge?
Nate Mason
12.
Randall Brody
Okay.
Roman
Yeah.
Nate Mason
I mean, I guess I could shoot a 20.
Randall Brody
Yeah, I'll give you.
Brody Henderson
That's the other thing about that TSS stuff. You don't need a.
Randall Brody
Do you have a 20?
Brody Henderson
Don't need a 12.
John
But I don't have.
Nate Mason
I'd have to go buy chokes and crap. Like, I got all my setup for my 12. We'll talk about this offline. They don't want to hear about my shotgun setups.
Brody Henderson
Know what works real good? A slug.
Spencer
You're distracting. You're distracting Nate from coming up with an answer. Marmots were given the nickname Blake because of their squeal. That's used to signal danger. John, do you have this one right?
John
I think so. I've heard this before, more or less for groundhogs rather than marmots, but.
Spencer
Come on, man.
Phil
He's getting mad.
Spencer
Randall, do you like your answer?
Randall Brody
I do.
Spencer
Okay, Randall. Brody, very confident. John. A little confident. Roman. Corinne, do you have an answer? Marmots were given the nickname Blank Pig because of their squeal that's used to signal danger. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Nate says Thunder Pig. Roman says screaming Pig. Randall. Whistle John. Whistle Corinne. Screaming Pig.
Randall Brody
I did forget a letter.
Spencer
Brody. Whistle Pig. The correct answer is whistle Pig. Which is a restaurant.
Phil
Yeah.
Randall Brody
If you walk out of the adult store in downtown Bozeman, you take a left and a right, you get to the meat eater store. If you walk out of the adult store and you turn to the right, you'll go to Whistlepig.
Spencer
Yeah, yeah. You'll see they have a Marmot.
Randall Brody
I've always wanted to explain where the meat eater store is. Perfect opportunity.
Spencer
Groundhogs have different whistles for different predators. Biologists scientists say they've heard unique chirps to signal the presence of eagles, coyotes, bears, humans, and more. Here is what they sound like.
Corinne
That's very cute.
Spencer
They're good whistlers.
Corinne
Yeah.
Randall Brody
I think Brody's impatient. No,
Spencer
that is a whisper.
Brody Henderson
It's a little stressed. They also call them rock Chucks.
Spencer
Rock chucks? Woodchucks.
Nate Mason
That's what that is.
Spencer
It's the same thing.
Brody Henderson
There's a long range shooting contingent that likes to.
Randall Brody
Oh, yeah,
Brody Henderson
big rock chuck shooting.
Spencer
There's a spot in Utah that I've driven through multiple times on the interstate where there's a stretch of road where you see five or ten of these things every time. It's. It's crazy. I've never seen so many woodchucks or rock Chucks in one spot. Question 8. The topic is conservation. The source and blank dynamic describes how different habitats create population growth or decline for organisms. And the room is stopped. The source and blank dynamic describes how different habitats create population growth or decline for organisms. Do you have this one right, Randall?
Randall Brody
I have a guess.
Spencer
A guess.
Randall Brody
Okay, I have a guess that I like. Did Shelby get. Is this where Shelby got her 0.66 from?
Spencer
No, that was on the TSS, which I think she said TPS or something like that. So I'm a good husband. So I gave her the 0.6.
Randall Brody
Did Roman get a point six?
Roman
Yeah, he's looking.
Brody Henderson
I know you've had a lot of time to really decorate your board n in this round of trivia.
Corinne
Yeah, I come here to learn, not to play.
Spencer
The Source and blank dynamic describes how different habitats create population growth or decline for organisms. Brody, do you have this one right?
Brody Henderson
I have what seems like could be a good answer, but I did not know this. The answer to this thing.
Spencer
This is one of those questions that I feel like a seventh grade science class kid.
Randall Brody
I'll be honest.
Spencer
A better chance than you guys.
Randall Brody
I don't think I've ever heard of this.
Brody Henderson
Yeah, I'm not like the seventh grade science thing. They weren't teaching this when I was in seventh.
Spencer
The source and blank dynamic describes how different habitats create population growth or decline for organisms.
Roman
This seems like a play on words. If I can help my fellow contestants.
Brody Henderson
Man, there's a lot of like. You have this one, right?
Roman
I don't think so.
Spencer
Okay, source. Source and blank. Is everybody ready?
Nate Mason
No, no, I'm changing it okay, see,
Spencer
Nate's on his third.
Nate Mason
Yep.
Brody Henderson
Nate just got a hint.
Nate Mason
Yeah.
Spencer
Wow. Change his answer. Roman doesn't know it, does he? No, he doesn't.
Nate Mason
Dude, if I get it, because that hint, I will be. I will kiss you.
Brody Henderson
Okay, I'm holding you to that.
Spencer
Yeah, that'll be one. Tss. Shell and Roman, a little smooch. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Nate says resource. Roman says supply. Randall, space. John, capacity. Corinne. Without an answer, Rhodey says resource. The correct answer, which Nate crossed out, is sink. The source and sink dynamic.
Nate Mason
I had size.
Spencer
Oh, size.
Nate Mason
I just have bad handwriting.
Spencer
The source and sink dynamic. The source and sink model shows how populations change across adjacent habitats. At the source habitat, you have growing populations. At the sink habitat, you have declining populations. Here's an example. On one side of a fence, you have a state park with a lush forest that doesn't allow any hunting. This is the source population for whitetails. And on the other side of the fence is a bean field with tree stands and tower blinds. This would be the sink population for deer. Source and sink dynamics like this factor into game management across state lines and unit boundaries.
Brody Henderson
I'm very disappointed. I've never heard of that.
Spencer
Source and sink. We have one neighbor in my little area who is the source population of voles because he has a very trashy yard. And then the rest of us are the sink.
Brody Henderson
Where the does he have a trash yard? Is it just natural? It doesn't meet the standards for your neighborhood?
Spencer
It's just a lack of grooming around some of his little buildings.
Brody Henderson
Homeowners association getting after him?
Spencer
No, no. It's all behind a fence. It's not that bad. I was the sour of the vol for a while.
Nate Mason
Ma', am, he does not.
Spencer
This is source and sync. All right, Phil, we have two questions left.
Phil
Give us a scoreboard update, two questions remaining. It's a fairly tight game for three players. John, Curran and Roman are no longer in the running, but Nate and Randall have five points and Brody is one point ahead with six in first place
Spencer
with two questions to go. Question nine. The topic is gear. This Seattle based outdoor store with the word co op in their logo is America's largest consumer co op.
Brody Henderson
Oh, I've been spending a lot of money there lately.
Roman
What have you been buying there, Brody?
Brody Henderson
No, I'll talk about it. I don't want to get sound like
Phil
kind of a hint.
Brody Henderson
Kind of a hint.
Spencer
Seattle based outdoor.
Brody Henderson
Stupid. That was a stupid thing to say.
Spencer
The word co op in their logo is America's largest Consumer co op.
Brody Henderson
But I feel like, like, how could you. You not know?
Spencer
This could have a 100 percenter in the room here. What are some other source and sinks? Like, like the bison dingo fence. The dingo fence.
Randall Brody
Well, that was the first one that came to mind.
Spencer
That'd be good to be a sink. They'd have to get to the other side and die. Though I figure there's a couple, you know, Bison. Bison. The source would be the park. The sink would be if they wander out of the park and get killed by a tribal member or a Montana tag holder. This Seattle based outdoor store with the word co op in their logo is America's largest consumer co op.
Nate Mason
I had a neighbor growing up who had like a vendetta out for moles in his process. He'd tamp down all the mole holes and then come back like 20 minutes later and see which ones had opened back up that they'd run through. And then he'd tamp them down again and he'd sit out there with a. With a spade and wait to see the little trail that's popping. And he. He had a great yard.
Brody Henderson
Oh my. I used to work on golf course many years ago and we used to get a bounty for.
Nate Mason
What was the bounty?
Brody Henderson
It was like five bucks.
Nate Mason
That's a good.
Phil
But if they're messing up a green
Brody Henderson
or a tee, they can really do a lot. So we used to stomp them when we saw them.
Spencer
Is everybody ready?
Corinne
Cats take care of.
Spencer
Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Nate and Roman and Randall and John and Corinne and Brody. The whole room says rei. The whole room got that correct. It's REI as a consumer co op. REI says their business is run by the customers who use it instead of external shareholders. This has been part of their identity since REI was founded in 1938. There are 25 million co op members, with one of the unique benefits being that you get to vote in their annual election for the board of directors.
Phil
Huh?
Spencer
Question 10. Before we do question 10, we will get another scoreboard update before Phil.
Phil
The song remains the same since I was 100. Or Brody has seven. Randall and Nate have six.
Spencer
Question 10, the topic.
Brody Henderson
Wait, aren't you doing a roundup of correct answers?
Spencer
Oh, you're good. Thank you. I wasn't going to.
Phil
I think I should count again.
Spencer
Just saved me from a conservation donation. Number one was Yellowstone River. Number two is the movie Holes. Three, the Outback. Four, that is the duck boot, the bean boot, or the main hunting shoe. Five was rockabye baby. Six was TSS, seven is whistle pig. Eight was the sink, and nine was REI. Here's question 10. The topic is cooking.
Nate Mason
Nice.
Spencer
PEI mussels are named after this island that's found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Brody gets this one right, he is writing his ants round.
Brody Henderson
I really like muscles.
Nate Mason
Spencer, this is just a fishing question.
Corinne
If I've gotten it right, P.E.I.
Spencer
mussels are named after this island that's found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Nate Mason
Did you do this on purpose?
Brody Henderson
Does Campioni have muscles, Randall?
Randall Brody
Yes.
Brody Henderson
God, I love those things.
Spencer
What do you got, Randall?
Randall Brody
I'm just looking at pack boots.
Brody Henderson
Yeah.
Randall Brody
Pack boots versus what are you learning? I mean, it does say Leon. Leon Wood Bean invented the precursor to modern pack boots known as the main hunting shoe in 1911. They're. The difference is that a pack boot is lined with felt, which is definitely something that L.L. bean did.
Nate Mason
A lot of P.E.I.
Spencer
muscles are named after this island that's found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Brody Henderson
Spencer ain't budging on that one, apparently.
Spencer
I don't think we're gonna give you the pack boot. Sounds like that came later. The duck boot was the OG do you have this one right, Nate?
Nate Mason
Nope.
Spencer
Roman, do you have this one right?
Roman
I'm feeling suspiciously decent about it.
Spencer
Oh, okay, good. Brody, I didn't know that about you. I didn't know you're a big muscle guy.
Brody Henderson
Oh, God, Man, I love that. Broth and bre.
Phil
Mussels and fries is probably in my top three meals.
Spencer
Yeah, I love that.
Brody Henderson
It's the worst thing is that, like, we go to Steve's shack, and it's just, like, miles of muscle encrusted shoreline, but we're, like, never there at a time of year when it's like, yeah, you could. You can go get them, like, because
Spencer
the season's closed because of that.
Brody Henderson
What are they at? What. What is it called? Paralytics. Yeah.
Randall Brody
Yeah. Second Street Bistro in Livingston is probably where we do most of our mussels and fries.
Spencer
P.E.I. mussels named after this island that's found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Nate is going to make one last change, then we're going to flip them over. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Nate says Prince Edward Island. Roman Prince Edward Island. Randall, Same answer. John, without an answer. Corinne and Brody say Prince Edward Island.
Randall Brody
That's not what Brody.
Spencer
No, Says Prince Edward.
Phil
Muscles, that's not the name of the island.
Brody Henderson
Come on.
Spencer
I think we're gonna give it to you. Go ahead.
Brody Henderson
Don't give it to me. I don't care.
Corinne
Dude, you know that his belly was, like, grumbling.
Spencer
The answer is Prince Edward. That's fine.
Brody Henderson
Don't give it to me. I really don't care.
Spencer
Edward muscle.
Nate Mason
That's not.
Phil
I. I would give it to him, but if he wants to go to
Randall Brody
a tie, I'd give it to him.
Spencer
No, I don't want to.
Brody Henderson
We can do a tiebreaker.
Spencer
We're gonna give him the point. PEI muscles are a type of blue muscle that comes from the coastline of Canada's smallest province, Prince Edward Island.
Brody Henderson
Now a bunch of people are going
Spencer
to be like, brody didn't get it, bro. They are considered. They are considered a superior muscle thanks to the cold, nutrient rich waters where they're raised. P.E.I. mussels are known for their jet black shells, sweet flavor, and tender meat.
Randall Brody
Another way of looking at it is if you count pack boot and you don't count Prince Edward mussels, I would have just won outright. So we don't even need to go
Spencer
to a time if you want a
Randall Brody
clean ending to the show.
Spencer
Yeah, yeah. Randall won it. We'll give it to Brody for Prince Edward muscles. Brody's the winner today with eight correct answers.
Randall Brody
I feel like this fell flat.
Spencer
Beats the shelby index by one point.
Randall Brody
Do another episode three.
Spencer
Three. Brody, where's the $500?
Brody Henderson
Man?
Spencer
I don't know.
Brody Henderson
That, like, whole thing just threw me off. Should we do a tiebreaker, Spencer?
Spencer
No, let's.
Brody Henderson
Since we have a new conservation director in Mark Kenyon and we're going to do like a new version of the lai, let's throw some money in the meat eater land access initiative.
Spencer
Okay. Mark thinks that's coming this summer. We haven't done an auction house of oddities in a while. That we have. All kinds of good stuff. All right, join us next week for more meat eater trivia. The only game show conservation always wins.
Randall Brody
Thanks, Spencer.
Phil
Thank you, spouse.
Randall Brody
Right, Spencer.
Phil
Yeah.
Spencer
Spencer from South Dakota. He's the host.
Brody Henderson
Using those smooth, mellow tones, he lays them questions down. And he likes taking those two and three year old bucks. And he's an avid amateur rock hound.
